So, when do puppy Labs stop growing? Generally, your puppy Lab will stop growing by the time they reach their second birthday. By this time, they would have reached their adult height, but your puppy could still continue gaining weight and filling up. Knowing the key milestones your puppy Lab will go through is key to gauging the health of the pup until they get to adulthood. Labrador puppies go through several growth stages between the moment they are born and when they fully transition into adults. They cannot see, hear, or regulate their body temperature, and their teeth have not grown yet. At this point, they depend on their mother for almost everything. The Transitional Stage 2 to 4 Weeks Two weeks after birth, your pup will start seeing and hearing sounds, and their teeth will start growing. The Awakening Period For The Senses 3 to 4 Weeks At this stage, your Lab puppy will start becoming more sensitive to what is happening in their environment. The Socialization Period 4 to 12 Weeks This is the period where the puppy Lab starts learning how to interact with humans, other dogs, and other things in their environment. How to avoid nutritional deficiencies in puppies If we want to offer our puppy homemade recipes, we will need to take them to the veterinarian for information on their specific dietary needs. In general, we would advise against preparing homemade meals for dogs until they are fully matured, at least. Genetic problems often cannot be determined with newborn puppies. It is only when they start to develop we see issues arise, especially if they are not growing as fast as their littermates. Congenital hypothyroidism is one such genetic issue which can result in the following: Stunted growth. There are several things that can cause stunted growth in puppies, ranging from intestinal worm infections to genetics. In this article, we will address the most common concerns associated with stunting, and whether or not these concerns actually cause stunted growth in dogs. Does Worm Infection Cause Stunting? Intestinal worms are extremely common in puppies in the United States — they either contract worms from their mother or from the environment around them. If a puppy has an extremely heavy worm infestation, the worms can steal enough calories from the puppy to slow down her growth. Puppies that have a heavy worm burden typically look unthrifty: they have a poor haircoat, diarrhea, a big pot belly, and are small and thin despite a voracious appetite. The good news is that once the puppy is free of worms, the body can heal itself and regain normal growth and development.
