The very much loved Jack on his way from Tel Aviv to New York with his owner Terry Not too sure what he thinks of his mode of transport!! INessie also travelling By a slightly more traditional means! We have a passion for Labradoodles, Labradors and Standard Poodles and the more we do with them the more hooked we become! We have a small number of very special breeding dogs - our ultimate aim is to enhance the quality and standard of the British Labradoodle. Our bitches are never bred from more than once a year and depending on how they take to motherhood they have a maximum of up to four litters. Once finished being Mums they are spayed and sometimes although this is terribly difficult and if the perfect home comes along they are re-homed - usually to family or friends. Sadly we can only keep a limited number of dogs if we are to continue our breeding program. If you are interested in adopting one of our ex-breeding bitches in the future and can offer the perfect home, please contact us. Our aim is to breed healthy, happy and beautiful family pets, bred from health tested parents, with good conformation and above all excellent temperaments. About sixteen years ago I saw my first 'Doodle' and was overwhelmed by him - I had never heard of Labradoodles before, and like everyone else, wasn't entirely sure whether I was having my leg pulled or not!! However, I was assured that Labradoodles were for real and I was also told a little about their history and why they were originally bred. I was fascinated and then spent many hours, days, months and yes years, researching into this wonderful, and relatively new breed. I had grown up with labradors and poodles and felt sure that a mating between the two to produce a labradoodle would be an excellent cross. Both dogs carry wonderful traits, and are such perfect family pets - put the two together and I felt certain you would end up with something very special indeed. Of course I wanted one! My hopes right from the start, if all went well, were to ultimately aim to breed a small number of top quality labradoodles, with particular care taken on their type, conformation, health testing and particularly their temperaments. Our first Labradoodle and the start of Didlington Doodles! When we went to see the pups at 6 weeks, out of all the pups it was Stroodle who came bounding up to us on arrival - she had already been picked out for us by Fiona as one of the best bitches, so it was extraordinary how she knew we were to be her 'people'! At the same time I also set out to find a very special labrador bitch puppy with the view, again if all went well, for her to start our own line of Didlington Doodles when the time was right. I found Pindy, a beautiful black puppy from a top class field trials strain, and again there was no question which pup from the litter was coming to us! The other extraordinary thing is that both pups were born on the same day - so there was a link between them right form the start. Both pups arrived shortly after the New Year in and our house has never been quite the same since!! Now a number of years later I can honestly say that my initial instincts about labradoodles were absolutely right. They are the most fabulous, fun, bouncy, crazy, loving and loyal dogs I have ever come across. They also have a highly developed sense of humour and are very intelligent. They are always up to some wicked trick - you can almost see their thought patterns as they try to think of something to make you laugh! A labradoodle is not for the faint hearted, they love lots of attention, walks and fun. They also love everybody and every thing - even our cats nearly get flattened with licks and kisses when they come home - although of course the cats do have the upper hand in the animal hierarchy! I don't think there is an ounce of malice in Stroodle, as I said she loves everybody and all other dogs too - but they can be over exuberant so do need to be properly trained. Being such sociable dogs they would not be happy left for hours on their own. I would therefore not advise anyone who was out at work all day to have a labradoodle and indeed we would not let one of our pups got an 'out at work all-day family'! We aim to breed about four litters a year, and are receiving emails and phone calls daily, either through word of mouth or via internet search engines. Initially we started in Dorset and in in we moved to our new home in Shropshire We have more space for our Doodles and we all live in the most idyllic and beautiful setting. In we became fully Council Licensed. After thorough checks to ensure the pups are going to the right homes, we are happy to export our puppies abroad, both internationally and to Europe. We work closely with Petair UK www. We now have Didlington Doodles in wonderful new homes in Jersey, Holland, Switzerland, Malta, Hong Kong, The USA and The Cayman Islands We are also now offering a delivery service within the UK for our pups, but do insist that new owners come to visit us initially in order to meet Mums, Dads and the pups and to see where they are born and brought up. As far as is possible we do like to meet all our prospective new owners. Most of our pups leave us at 8 weeks, but it is possible for us to keep them for a little longer if required to help with holiday dates etc. We obviously make a small charge for this and also for delivery. Pindy who started our own line of Labradoodles - our original F1's. She had the most beautiful pups and was a fantastic family member always up for a good walk and even a bit of skateboarding - but only as long as Phezzie could come too! She is a small working Labrador and just the sweetest, most gentle dog. Mum to Binka and many other very special pups! I've liked the page. I remember Chewy from the website. He's gorgeous. Hopefully there will be something around next July but to be honest if it was earlier I certainly wouldn't complain. Do you take your dogs to a groomer or do you do it yourself? I was hoping to learn how to do it myself if possible. It might prove less hassle though getting someone else to do it. Also do you do the ear plucking or do you trim the ears? I'll stop asking questions after this ha ha. Although I live in Scotland both my dogs came from a breeder in South Wales Courtlands We got the first one there because both Tora and Lomond Hills in Scotland couldn't supply a puppy in the time scale we were hoping for. Went back to Wales for the second because we were so pleased with the looks and temperament of our first. I have since spoken to other owners who have purchased from both Tora and Lomond Hills and all spoke positively about their dogs and experience of both breeders. Regards grooming your dog yourself that is exactly how I felt and went to a local groomer who does training courses for people wanting to be full time groomers. I explained I only wanted to do my own dog and not start up a business and they took me on for a one day course, taught me the basics and I've done both of my ever since. I'm not as quick as a professional groomer but I can groom the dogs at a time that suits me, no leaving the dogs at a groomers. Can do it as often or as little as I want , cut as short or leave as long as suits. Would recommend it for anyone who is interested. The groomer I went to is in Lanarkshire, don't know if that is anywhere near you but you could always ask someone more local to you if they would do something similar. BRUCE, Deciding to get a labradoodle… We knew for about two years that we wanted to get another puppy to be friends with our older dog a lovely blue merle collie called Gizzi. We put a lot of time and research into exactly what would be the best match for us and for Gizzi, and we have a long list of potential breeds we were working our way through. We knew that we needed a really happy, almost bomb proof dog because our collie is a little highly strung. But we also wanted a clever dog who we could train, and one who enjoyed a lot of exercise so the pup could keep up with our existing routine. Too much to ask? One day my husband came home and said he had met a lady whilst walking Gizzi who had the most beautiful dogs, and they were Labradoodles. And had I considered a labradoodle? Immediately the research began. All my research online suggested that this was the perfect breed for us — clever, energetic but a bit ditzy. We knew we wanted a boy, and ideally a chocolatey one I had intentions of naming him Cadbury. When the litter arrived I was so excited! They looked like tiny little guinea pigs. Johanne kept us up to date daily on their progress, with loads of pictures, and every day a different pooch was my favourite. Immediately I fell in love with a little black girl, the absolute opposite of what I thought I wanted. There were two brown boys to choose from if we still wanted that, but by now we had no intention of picking a pooch based purely on physical characteristics. We wanted a naughty little rascal! So, we based it on who seemed to want us. As it turned out, this was to be one of the chunky brown boys. He was a tiny little man, and he was lovely. So we picked our boy. By this time, my husband had decided he would be called Bruce, after Bruce Springsteen. And he did look like a Bruce. The first few nights and settling in We had a puppy book from Johanne which we studied in advance of picking Bruce up, which gave us lots of tips for bringing your puppy home. However, on night one, the book came out. Bruce was upset, you see. And the book said on the first few nights he would be ok in a tall-sided box in our bedroom, so we snuck him up in the middle of the night in a box filled with towels, and he finally settled as I lay halfway down the bed, with both arms in the box. Nothing else would settle him! Crate all the way, little man! I gave up, sort of, and slept alongside the crate on the floor of our dining room that night as he still seemed unsettled. So on day three, we spent the day crate training. We essentially put him into the crate over and over again, with toys and treats, over and over again, for hours. I timed his squeaking, and we got him down from 27 minutes to about 15 seconds. That night he went to bed downstairs and settled right down. Since then, he has been a star — so long as he still gets his bedtime treats! How could you not be? This tiny bundle of fluff, she warmed to him straight away. Immediately and I am not exaggerating he had a huge beneficial influence over her temperament. Having him around, being daft and happy, has really calmed her down and she seems much more settled now. A big, flumpy, happy teddy bear. I adore Bruce. From his first little walk outside to his full off-lead walks today and his dog training, Bruce has been a star. Until he steals your shoes. Yes, Bruce really loves shoes. Your most expensive, preferably. We took Bruce to training as soon as he could after his vaccinations. He is a perfect little gentleman and was moved up to the Bronze level Kennel Club Good Citizen training after just 4 weeks of puppy school. He has also learned to high-five, which is my favourite thing. He has made friends with lots of other dogs, big and small, and has wonderful confidence. I think this is why he has had such a calming influence on our older dog. He makes friends with everyone he meets, which seems to make her worry less about meeting new people. He is a great little ambassador. From when he was still with Johanne to now, he loves his food. Johanne said he liked to shove his littermates out of the way to get extras. And at just under 6 months, he is already the same size as our collie. He needs regular brushing, and we tend to blow dry him a couple of times a week on account of him getting soaking wet every morning on our 6am walks. It was evident when the pups were still living with Johanne that Johanne was incredibly attentive to their needs, and this has really paid off in well-adjusted and incredibly happy little pooches. I brought my parents to meet Bruce when he was with Johanne, and they still claim that all his wonderful nature and ability to pick up training is a direct result of his excellent early start in life. I like to think I have also had a hand in it! Now I just need to figure out what further training we are going to do. Or as a huge floofy hot water bottle to sit on my knee each evening — he has already been practicing for that. His amazing big soft paws His really happy, bouncy, happy nature did I mention happy? His big wiggly butt That he already appears to know all the training how? Your advice and guidance throughout the whole process of choosing our four legged companion has been fantastic, we bombarded you with questions and queries as we searched out our ideal breeder and puppy, and you have always been quick and comprehensive with your replies and guidance, as a result of this we feel that we were as well prepared as we could be for when Jasper came home with us. What has also been so reassuring for us is that this help has not stopped once we picked Jasper up; it has made the whole experience of owning a new puppy a lot easier than it could otherwise have been. When we picked Jasper up at just over 8 weeks old, he was already used to sleeping in a crate, and we never had a single accident over night with him, yes we had the whimpers at bed time, but having gone cold turkey on him, by the second night he settled quickly and soon was challenging who could snore loudest in the house! Toilet training was a breeze, as Jasper had already been used to going outside, and the only accidents we had was when we took our eye of the ball! Jasper has been quick to learn, and again on your advice we had him off lead as soon as he was allowed out, and this has paid off massively, with us being able to recall him up to now really well — we will see how this continues as he goes through his teenage phase! Once again on your advice we have had Jasper enrolled in a local puppy training class, which he continues to excel at, and he is now working towards his bronze award, and in doing so is often showing up the older dogs. Not to sound too much like a school report, but Jasper is showing great potential to become exactly what we were looking for from our dog, what with his laid back attitude, his quirky loveable ways, as well as his ability to learn new things. For any other potential puppy families that are considering you, we can only say, if you want a breeder who obviously genuinely loves her dogs, and wants the best for her pups, be this by giving the new families comprehensive guidance on the likes of feeding, training, veterinary care, grooming, exercise, puppy socialisation — the list goes on; then look no further — Johanne is the breeder whom we would most certainly recommend. One very happy puppy family.

While slightly high energy, this Goldendoodle might not need as much exercise as other breeds in this family. The Poodle side of the family can lead to a slightly more mellow dog, which can be great for some families. If you live in an apartment, this is also a really ideal dog breed for your needs. These dogs do very well in small living spaces and never knock things over or run around and damage things. Poodles are well-known for being ideal for living situations where there is no backyard or area for daily exercise that is convenient to access. This breed will also be happy to live in a small home with a daily walk or a trip to the dog park. The different coat patterns can impact the appearance of the coat as well. If you have a dog with the straight version of the coat, it might look more like a Golden Retriever than a Goldendoodle. Black Goldendoodles with a curly coat might appear slightly more like regular Poodles. Overall, this is a very beautiful dog and one that you will get lots of compliments on when you are out and about. The medium-sized dog is often the most popular dog size because this kind of pet can fit into almost any size home and can be easier to care for with regard to feeding and things like walking and exercising. This coloration often requires that the dog that you are getting is a second or third-generation dog as well. This means that your pet might look like one or the other of its parents much more strongly than a Goldendoodle that is many generations farther away from the original two dog breeds. You might want to look for this dog breed for your family if you value getting a dog that looks like a Golden Retriever or a Poodle and less like a crossbred dog. F1b black Goldendoodle 6-month-old 34lbs There are actually three sizes of Black Goldendoodle. There are miniatures that will only weigh in at about 15 to 30 pounds, and large standard dogs that can weigh as much as pounds. These are not as commonly bred, however, and the medium-sized dog is the most common one that breeders will try to aim for when creating litters. The medium Black Goldendoodle will be about 45 to 60 pounds and stand about 20 to 24 inches tall. This is a nicely sized dog for families and this size dog will not be so big that your kids will be scared to play with it, but not so little that you will need to carry your pet with you everywhere that you go. The Black Goldendoodle is often built much like regular Goldendoodles as well, so you can expect a nice blend of the body type of the Golden Retriever and the Black Poodle. Black Goldendoodle Lifespan This breed lives for about ten to fifteen years. This is much longer than the average Golden Retriever and is more in keeping with the Poodle side of the pedigree. This is one of the benefits of getting a dog that is not purebred and you can avoid the heartbreak of a dog that does not live to be very old when you choose a mixed breed. There are some common health concerns that can impact the lifespan of your Black Goldendoodle, however, which will be discussed in another section. Hybrid dogs can be healthier overall, but there are always outliers in any dog breed. You will need to be aware that many animals that are young will not suffer from any health issues at all. There are always unfortunate situations that could arise with any breed that you select, so you need to be aware that the lifespan of any breed is only an estimate. Your dog could live longer than the normal lifespan or for fewer years. These dogs love to learn tricks and are always happy to play fetch or play with the other pets in their homes. They are also very good at working on hard tasks without getting frustrated. Both Poodles and Golden Retrievers are very intelligent , which means that your Black Goldendoodle will be very good at learning new skills and tricks with ease. Many people love that the Black Goldendoodle is so trainable, even if they are not planning to compete or to show their dog. You can teach your Black Goldendoodle all the rules of your home very easily because they are so biddable and they will be happy and eager to make the most of each training session. Training a Black Goldendoodle is really easy and very enjoyable. You will be able to teach them to do all kinds of fun things and they will love working with their family and owners every day. Training any dog needs to be done with patience and positive reinforcement. You will need to use the same techniques when training your Black Goldendoodle as you would with any other breed. Your Black Goldendoodle will thrive under this kind of training method and you will have a great time working with them on any skill that you want them to learn. These are common issues that can come from both sides of the pedigree and both the parent breeds. Hybrid dogs are often less prone to health problems, but you do need to be aware of the common health risks that come from two-parent pedigrees. Hip and Elbow Dysplasia This is the most common health problem that a Black Goldendoodle might suffer from and it can lead to lifelong struggles for some animals with joint stability and pain. Being aware of the commonality of this health problem is important when you are shopping for a Black Goldendoodle. You can prevent some of the more difficult problems that plague pets with hip dysplasia by keeping your dog from jumping up and down onto furniture and into and out of the car. Patellar Luxation This condition happens when the kneecap moves out of the right place. This issue requires surgery to correct, and it can be found in all Goldendoodle dogs. This can be treated with diet management and grooming routines. These eye conditions might be present in your Black Goldendoodle as well. You can treat many of these conditions, but some of them are progressive and will worsen over time. Grooming Needs of the Black Goldendoodle The grooming needs of your Black Goldendoodle will depend entirely upon the coat pattern that you select. Even if you have a dog with a straight coat pattern, you will still want to be sure that your dog gets groomed by a professional groomer at least twice a year. For dogs with curly coats, grooming might be needed quarterly or even more often. Make sure that you invest in the right grooming supplies and bath products as well for any homecare that you provide for your pet. When you allow mats to form, your dog might end up with hotspots and other painful skin conditions. Grooming a Goldendoodle requires that you commit to a schedule of care and that you stick to this plan. Deviating from the regular grooming plans that you have in place for your dog can lead to health issues and painful skin problems that you will want to avoid. The coat care portion of the commitment to a Goldendoodle cannot be avoided and you will need to plan to offer your dog this attention if you get a Black Goldendoodle. Black Goldendoodles will often shed twice a year as the seasons change. There will not be as much shedding during the other times of the year and you might not see much in the way of pet hair in your home when you are caring for this dog breed. This is one of the key benefits of this breed for you and your family. Being able to trust that your dog will not shed all year around can be really nice and you will probably really appreciate being able to pet your dog without fear of having to remove handfuls of hair each time you pet them. There are some breeds that seem to be shedding non-stop all year round, but the Black Goldendoodle is not one of these breeds. This can make it much easier to keep up on grooming and much more straightforward for those who want to have a professional do all the grooming for their dog. No Goldendoodle dog is AKC-recognized. The AKC might eventually recognize this breed, but at this time it is not one that you can register with this organization. There are other organizations and breed organizations that you can join to show or compete with your Black Goldendoodle, however. You do not need an AKC registration for your dog to be able to have a great pet that you love and that brings joy to your life. You might need an AKC registration for a variety of different dog showing or competition-based experiences, but most people are not looking for a Black Goldendoodle to take to dog shows. How Much Are Black Goldendoodles? The Black Goldendoodle is very popular and there are fewer dogs with this coat pattern than the more common Goldendoodle colors. You might also need to figure out the cost to have your dog delivered to you as there are not many breeders across the country who create a litter of this kind. You might have to plan to drive to go pick up your dog as well. While less common than other coat colors in the Goldendoodle breed, this is still a part-bred dog and one that cannot be AKC registered. This is often a sales tactic and can be a sign that the breeder that you are working with is not scrupulous. Feeding the Black Goldendoodle The Black Goldendoodle will need to be fed in much the same way as any Goldendoodle dog. You should always feed top-quality dog kibble and make sure that your pet is not being exposed to large quantities of grain in their food source. Feeding raw can be an option as well, but you will need to source this kind of dog food just as carefully as you would source the kibble that you feed to your pet. Poodles can have sensitive stomachs, so you will want to avoid lots of treats or wet dog food from a can as well. Most dogs do best when fed a quality kibble and no more than the occasional treat here and there. If you are not sure what to feed your Black Goldendoodle, you can talk to your vet about the various food options that are ideal for this breed. The Black Goldendoodle Can be a Great Companion Animal This is one of the best breeds to select if you have a family and need a dog that will get along with everyone in your family. You will love their sweet and kind personality as well as the unusual color of their coat and their middling size. The Black Goldendoodle offers you all the same breed benefits that you can enjoy with the other coat colors within the Goldendoodle breed. If you love the color of the coat of the Black Poodle, this is probably the right Goldendoodle coat pattern for you! This is a kind and loveable dog breed that will fit right into any home with ease. If both parents carry a gene that creates a black coat color however, black Goldendoodle puppies can be born. These are very rare and if you have your heart set on a black Goldendoodle, you will need to do some research to find the right puppy. Black Goldendoodles are usually all-black with little or no white markings. They do not occur in spotted black-and-white patterns such as in the Parti Poodle. When looking for your puppy, see if the parents have produced black Goldendoodles before. If so, they will carry the genes necessary for having such pups and your chances of getting a black puppy are higher. Note that there is never a guarantee — genetics can be surprising and two parents could even have a first litter consisting only of black Goldendoodles, and another with only brown puppies! Are black Goldendoodles rare? As mentioned above — yes, they are very rare! There is an increase chance to get a black Goldendoodle if they are bred in the second or third generation. If a black Goldendoodle parent is crossed with a black Poodle, the offspring will nearly always be all black. This type of breeding will increase certain desired traits. A popular cross like this are also f1b Mini Goldendoodles. Below you can see a diagram of how color prevalence chan change in the generations: Are black Goldendoodles popular? Black Goldendoodles are very popular and sought-after — in fact, the demand for them is much higher than the amount of puppies that are born. Of course, the wait will be worth it: These dogs are incredibly smart, loyal and good-looking. However, they are not all goofy and cute: Goldendoodles are the offspring of working dogs and as such will require daily exercise, training and enrichment. It is crucial that you have plenty of puzzle toys for your Goldendoodle , take him on walks daily and provide adequate training for him. Do black Goldendoodles shed? Most Doodle mixes shed either not at all or considerably less than a double-coated dog. However, especially with a mixed breed it is impossible to guarantee a certain coat type. If you are looking for a dog that sheds very little because you do not like to have dog hair on your clothes, furniture and around your house — a black Goldendoodle fits the bill. If however you need a truly hypoallergenic dog that will not shed at all or set off allergies, a these dogs may or may not work. If there is any health concern it is always advisable to spend some time around other Doodles at first and see if they cause any allergic response. Any Poodle mix coat will grow very long and has the tendency to form mats and dreadlocks quickly. You can either buy some clippers and groom your dog at home or take him to a local groomer. It goes without saying that this will be tied to daily brushing and monthly baths. Do not let it mat or your dog will suffer from painful skin sores! How big will my dog get? In general, you can expect an adult size of 20 to 24 inches and a weight of 50 to 90 pounds. This is a big range and where exactly your dog falls into it will depend on — again! If the parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles have been on the small side, expect a smaller adult dog. If the family of your black Goldendoodle has been large, yours is likely to be tall as well. You can find out how large exactly your dog will become with our Goldendoodle growth chart calculator : How much is a black Goldendoodle? Because the color genetics can be difficult to reproduce and breeders cannot guarantee that a certain number of black pups will be born, the ones that are might be especially expensive. Especially if you are additionally looking for a small dog, such as a black Mini Goldendoodle , prepare to pay a high price for your pup. Unleash the real potential of your companion! We will email you daily with training tips, ideas and videos. This is an introductory course into our training philosophy. You will get customized video lessons based on your training goals — and you can implement them in just 5 minutes a day.

Before you start training your Boxer puppy—or, even better, before you get the puppy—read up on what kind of training is ideal for your breed. Check online, local libraries and local organizations. You can also ask your vet for advice. Remember, the more knowledgeable you are, the better you know how to react under different circumstances. Make sure as well that you have what you need to effectively train your dog. If you're planning to clicker train, get a clicker. If you're planning to crate train, get the right-sized crate. Also be sure to pick up an appropriate collar and leash for general training. A leash should be no more than five to six feet in length. The best leashes for training are leather. Always check your equipment to make sure it is in good order and not liable to snap or break. Training works best when you dedicate a couple of short sessions 10 to 15 minutes twice a day to it. Try to train at times when the dog is not tired, but also not bursting with pent-up energy. Karen Pryor. Publisher: Ringpress Books Consider expending your Boxer's energy before training sessions by allowing him 20 to 30 minutes of high-intensity physical activity. This will enable him to better focus on training. Try to train the dog in a place where there are few distractions, so that your Boxer puppy can focus his attention on you. This means avoiding places with other animals or people. Always begin training in your home or yard and build up to environments with more distractions e. Your commands need to be simple, short, clear and consistent. Don't lecture your dog; they're not human so they don't process language in the same way. Phrases like "I've told you not to do that" or "Please stop chewing on the table" will not work as they are too complicated. John Bradshaw. Publisher: Penguin Experts believe that a given dog registers the first part of the word as the most important, so longer commands such as "Sit Fido if you want a treat" are liable to confuse him. Just say the word "Sit" instead. In general, shouting at any dog is ineffective. This is especially true for Boxers who are hyper breed by nature. Use a firm but pleasant and upbeat voice when instructing your dog; don't yell or lose control. Dogs are very intuitive and will be able to sense your frustration and may react in kind. The tone of voice matters, especially since, again, dogs don't process language in the same way that humans do. So how you say something may mean as much if not more than what you say. Publisher: Penguin Boxers are playful by nature, and a light, breezy tone will not suffice; he will think you are just playing with him if you are not firm enough. Try using hand gestures at the same time as you issue verbal commands. For example, raise your hand at the same time as saying "Sit". Dog behaviorists believe that dogs look for multiple clues as to what we want them to do, which includes the command word, tone of voice, and body language. Admonishing a Boxer puppy too long after the incident is ineffective. If you need to admonish or correct your dog, it needs to be done during or within a few seconds of the act. Dogs will have forgotten the event within seconds of its occurrence, so it's key to address the behavior immediately in order to facilitate the retraining process. Boxers are notoriously stubborn and steadfast, so you may have to correct your puppy numerous times. Always be consistent in your commands and desires of the dog. This helps your dog to understand what is expected. Don't forget to enforce training when you are out and about, so that your dog doesn't just thinking that "Sit" and "Stay" are things he has to do in the yard or house. By enforcing commands in public places it helps your Boxers to understand he must obey under all circumstances. Leave no room for doubt about what is acceptable behavior for your Boxer puppy. If he is not allowed on the furniture, be consistent. Boxers won't understand the concept of "sometimes"; they are either permitted to lie on the couch or they are not. If you live with other people, make sure that everyone in the house is on board with the training program. Using different words for the same action will confuse the dog, disrupt the training already done, and ultimately delay progress. But at the moment, they need your guidance. For now, this includes sleeping next to you for the first few weeks, maybe even longer. Just have their crate or bed close to wherever you sleep. Our articles on sleeping through the night and establishing a nighttime routine will give you extra tips on getting through this phase. A puzzle toy or Kong will work great at making them feel like you leaving them is actually something quite fun. Potty training All new puppy parents expect potty training to be on the cards. It will help to remember your Boxer pup is a bit of a goofball. For now, we definitely want to let your pup get used to you and settle into their new home. Teach your puppy about surfaces — Different surfaces can feel strange to pups. Use surfaces like grass, moss, paving and sand. Basically, make their tail wag and we bet yours will too. Teach your Boxer their name. Teach your Boxer puppy to sit. Remember what we said about Boxers and their jumping? Recall — Trust us. Preventing resource guarding Resource guarding is where your dog fiercely protects something they have and will do everything they can to keep hold of it. Dogs can resource guard food, a toy, even a person. You can do this by teaching them that hands and touch can be a good thing. As always, back up your soft touches with some treats. Remember that consent is also a thing with dogs! Never force your Boxer to be handled or pick them up against their wishes. Socialization exercises to do this week Training to do this week Husbandry Tasks to do this week — Fireworks — Watch the world go by outside your house — Play dress up. This will affect everything from how comfortable he is eating, to bacteria in the bowl and also has a direct impact on the risk of developing bloat an issue with this breed. Size, height, material and overall design all matter. Read more about the best food and water bowls for Boxers Bed or Mat Boxers love to take over the sofa, make claim to their human's favorite chair or stretch out on the floor. We recommend a 6 food leash or retractable for house training Boxer puppies. You'll want to keep him close to lead him to and keep him in the exact designated area and to have him close to give immediate praise and reward. A short leash is also best when training your Boxer to heel, since his proper positioning is to your left and right by your side. A longer leash, or one that can extend out, is great for allowing your Boxer to run and have some freedom, when deemed safe. In regard to a collar or harness, this breed typically has strong enough neck and shoulder muscles to do okay with a collar. However, if your Boxer tends to launch himself forward or off to the side quite often when on leash, play it safe and get him a harness. This will remove the issue of pressure being applied straight to the neck and instead it will be displaced on a Boxer's stronger shoulders, chest and back. An ID tag is a must. Though your Boxer can tend to stay close and you're on-point in regard to not letting him off leash, it's just not worth the risk. Choose a stainless steel tag that is weather resistant and will be durable enough that the engraving does not wear down. It's suggested to put more than one type of contact info for someone to return your Boxer cell, address, email. The Right Toys It's best to think of toys as tool. Which ones are going to perform to meet the needs of your Boxer puppy or dog? All toys should serve a specific function. If not, you mind as well toss them or your Boxer may already have figuratively done that by ignoring them. And most toys cannot meet all of a dog's needs at one time though some can have a duel purpose. The main reasons for certain toys include: Teething, chewing urges, entertainment to stay busy especially when home alone , and owner interaction. Read more about choosing the best toys for a Boxer Brushes Boxers have short, dense coats that will shed mostly into themselves, rather than leave a mess on the floor. This is great for your house, but not so much in terms of health for the coat itself. Though Boxers can enter shedding seasons depending on where you live , most still or entirely shed minor to moderate amounts throughout the year. You will want to routinely brush the coat from head to tail at least once per week. During times of heavier shed, use a tool specifically to pull out dead hairs. Brushing has several benefits: It pulls out hairs that have shed but fallen back. If these are left, they can block natural air flow. It distributes natural body oils It removes fine dirt and debris Is healthy for the hair follicles, leading to better re-growth fur is in a constant renewal cycle The best brushes for Boxer dogs: For the type of coat that a Boxer has, the best brush will be a quality bristle brush. Be sure that it has a sturdy handle, is sized well for your hand, and has proper tension it won't do much good if it simply glides over the surface. For times of shedding, when you need to pull out any dead hairs, use a grooming tool that reaches deep down, latches onto hairs and brings them up and out. Dental Care Items Of all the supplies you might possibly get for your Boxer puppy or dog, do not overlook dental care items. What can happen: Plaque builds up on a dog's teeth every second of the day and chewing on treats and toys even great dental treats just doesn't get it all off. Within 3 days, plaque starts to harden into tartar. It encases the teeth and travels under the gum line. It eats away at the enamel of the teeth, causing decay and rot. Infection can travel up into the sinuses or even throughout the body, causing sepsis. Decay causes teeth to loosen and eventually fall out. And of course, this all happens comes at the cost of quite a bit of pain for a dog. The American Veterinary Dental College reports that periodontal disease is the most common preventable clinical condition in both cats and dogs. Without proper care, most dogs have some level of periodontal disease by the age of 3 years old; at this stage, there are not enough signs of unknowing owners to take steps other than bad breath yet can lead to damage to internal organs. What to do: Take measure to ensure excellent oral hygiene with your Boxer dog. Brush your Boxer's teeth with a quality toothbrush. Use an appropriately sized, 3 sided brush. Use an effective toothpaste human paste is toxic, look for a canine product that tastes good and works well to remove plaque. Don't be surprised when a good paste does not foam; they are not meant to since dogs are supposed to swallow the product. Offer one effective dental treat each day. We highly recommend Greenies; these are simply the best and are an accepted product of the Veterinary Oral Health Council. Think about using a water supplement that works to kill bacteria and help prevent plaque. Be sure that it does not contain a drying agent and tasteless ones work best. Bathing, Coat Supplies Everything that you use on the coat shampoo, conditioner, spray will either be beneficial to a Boxer or detrimental. You will want to have a really good shampoo that not only cleans great, but does so with the right pH balance to avoid over-drying and without harsh chemicals. The conditioner that you use needs to coat hairs without being so oily that residue remains which can clog skin pores. The coat should be protected with a spritz. A leave-in spray offers some great benefits: It smells great, protects the coat from static, contact friction and outdoor elements particularly the sun. Though, even with dogs that are outside much of the day and are super active, you can't depend on this to keep the nails short enough. If you want to do this at home, we recommend an electronic filer. It's much easier than clipping. Nose - A dog's nose is naturally pretty vulnerable to all of the elements it encounters. From arid air to cold winds to sun exposure. A big mistake is to only put something on the nose once it starts to look really dry or start peeling, because while a good product can indeed heal a chapped or cracked nose, it's better to be ahead of the game and prevent it in the first place. Every month or so, apply a quality nose butter and then keep it on hand for when you need to apply it more often, which is typically in the dead of winter and in during long, hot summers. Paws - You don't want to baby the paws, because they toughen up as a puppy and then dog walks on a variety of surfaces. However, if they become damaged this puts you back several steps and can even morph into serious issues. This is why a quality paw wax should be part of the supplies you have for your Boxer, it's a vital part of year-round paw care. Look for a good wax that allows the paws to breath and is absorbed quickly in just a couple of minutes. Car Restraint or Seat If you'd buckle up your child, there should be no hesitation to buckle up your Boxer. To not do this is to risk his safety. There are over 16, car accidents per day in the U. No matter how good of a driver you are, you just can't guarantee that someone won't crash into you or that road or weather conditions won't cause something to happen. So, of all the possible supplies that you might get for your Boxer, this one can literally save lives. There are some great options that are easy to use, can actually help with motion sickness and are comfortable for a Boxer puppy or larger, older adult dog. Read more about finding the best car seat or belt for a Boxer dog. Basic First Aid Supplies There are a few basic essentials that every owner should have on hand in the case of injury or emergency. If you've ever looked into this, you may have found some pretty extensive lists; and that's a shame because you don't need half of those things. Chances are, you'll never find yourself searching through your supplies as you try to set broken bones; things like this should be saved for the animal hospital. However, dogs do commonly swallow things that they should not according to the Pet Poison Hotline of the ten top breeds that they received calls about, the Boxer places at 8. You should always be prepared for this. Also, there can be insect bites, something in the eye and small scraps and cuts. Read more about which first aid items you should have for a Boxer dog Outer Gear - Optional, Based on Needs Many Boxers do just fine without any sort of additional layers via jackets or coats. However, some don't. Puppies, senior dogs, or those that are ill or recovering may have an intolerance to the cold. Additionally, just about any otherwise healthy dog can need some help during super harsh weather. If your Boxer is having a hard time in the winter and this is interfering with meeting exercise requirements or is getting in the way of house training, you may want to check into this. If so, read more about clothing for Boxer dogs. Supplements - Optional, Based on Needs If you are feeding your Boxer a high quality food, vitamins and minerals are already added to the mix. However, if you are offering a mainly home cooked diet which is great , you have to be the one to add in a complete vitamin and mineral supplement. So You Want A Boxer? I personally have a soft spot for Boxers thanks to fond childhood memories. Both were fawn colored and great with kids. One of my pet sitting clients was also a black brindle colored Boxer who loved to play catch me if you can in his yard. His name was Bogart and he was the most beautiful Boxer I have ever seen, and I swear he was aware of his good looks! Known as brachycephalic dogs, their nasal passages are much shorter than those of dogs with long snouts. That makes them more prone to overheating on hot summer days than dogs with regularly sized nasal passages. The same applies to tail docking. Besides a more natural look, undocked Boxers with a full tail are also better swimmers and can communicate more effectively with other dogs and humans too. It simply means teaching your Boxer to follow rules that are important to you. For example, no pulling on walks , not being allowed on furniture, no jumping on guests, waiting for your OK to eat, not racing through an open door, etc. They enjoy being close to their humans, including adults and children. Should I opt for dry kibble or canned wet food? Wet foods are of course more appealing to dogs, which means they get used to them easily and will not want to eat dry food again. If your Frenchie is a picky eater you can mix the dry and wet food but never give them the latter only. We recommend wet food for dogs who are ill and have no appetite. How much time does my puppy need to adjust to a new food? At what age should I switch to adult food for my French Bulldog? We usually recommend switching to adult food at the age of months old. If you notice that your puppy looks a bit chubbier or bigger compared to other Frenchies you can make this change even sooner. What is the best food for a Frenchie puppy? The best choice for your Frenchie puppy is to continue providing the same brand the breeder used to provide. This should be a high-quality brand that uses real meat and avoids fillers, artificial preservatives, and additives. What is the best food for an adult French Bulldog? You have several options. You can buy high-quality wet and dry god food at your local pet store or if you want more control over what goes into the bowl, you can feed your adult Frenchie with home-cooked food. Just like humans, your dog could be allergic to some kind of food, such as corn or soy, but in most cases, they are actually allergic to fillers found in processed food. These fillers are used to add mass to the product, but have no nutritional value and are difficult to digest. The best way to save your dog from this kind of suffering is avoiding fillers and giving him whole food ingredients. They do due diligence on you as a prospective adopter by asking you questions. Good breeders are transparent about their breeding practices and can provide a full medical history. They have approaches that encourage puppy socialization before adoption. They will provide you with a contract to sign. They will follow up with you during the adoption to ensure all is well. It is useful to consider these traits in mind when undergoing research on breeders. You can easily call, email or visit breeders to get a sense of their setup and breeding approaches. Explore the breeders below. They have well-bred, nicely built, and healthy German Shepherds. These dogs also have wonderful personalities and excellent temperaments. The Homestead German Shepherds are not show-line dogs. The breeding priority of these animals is the exterior. Most of the show-line dogs in North America have been bred because of a fad of over-angulation. This is desirable in the show ring, but poor working confirmation can lead to many health concerns. Therefore, the look of these German shepherds is not true to the standards of the original breed. The Homestead German shepherds are working line dogs and as well come from proven lines. They do not have extreme working dogs but instead have amazing dogs with the highest respect for the time they invest in growing such dogs. The German shepherds are bred selectively to have intense prey drives, great energy, and fearlessness. They are great for police, military, and detection roles, and the ones that lifestyle complement their lifestyle such as German Shepherds. They will not work well for the average family or person. The goal of the Homestead German Shepherd is to breed a dog that has the positive attributes of a well-bred dog. Courageous spirits, solid temperaments, intelligence, minds, good health, and beautiful bodies. They bred dogs from East Germany, European and Czech. These countries have dogs with excellent health. At one year of age, she is distinctly a German Shepherd Dog and a very beautiful one at that. Most of us buy German Shepherds when they are puppies and many of us have no idea what the puppy will look like as a grown dog, except that it will definitely be a German Shepherd. Some people don't care what the dog looks like so long as it will bark and protect their property. Others want a show dog. Still others are buying a member of the family. What are you looking for when buying a German Shepherd? Don't buy the first puppy you see All puppies are appealing. If you are buying a puppy because of its pretty face, it will not look like that grown up. If you are buying it because it seems gentle and quiet, it simply may be well fed and sleepy. If you are buying the one that comes to you and bites your hand, it may do that the rest of its life. Be a discriminating buyer. You will be living with this dog for as long as 12 years. Still others have unregistered dogs and are unable to provide you with papers. Ask to see the health certificates on the parents Some breeders will tell you that they have never had a problem with "hips" in their line but will not give you any x-ray information to support their statement. There is only one way to verify whether or not a dog has hip or elbow dysplasia and that is through x-ray screening. There is only one data base available to find out if your breeder has x-rayed their breeding stock and that is through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals or OFA. The OFA lists only dogs that have been cleared for hip and elbow dysplasia. This information is available for search on their web site. More information is given on the page called Titles. These certify that the dog has been x-rayed and has been found to be free of hip and elbow problems. If the dog is over two years of age, ask to see the "final" certificate. Do not accept the "prelims" or underage certificates. If the breeder does not have the certificates, ask for the OFA numbers and the registered names of the parents so that you can check to see if they have been x-rayed. Ask about litter evaluations for structure and temperament One of the reasons for seeing the parents, if possible, is to get an idea of what the puppy will look like when it is an adult dog. Another is to evaluate the parent's temperament as suitable for your home environment. Ask to see siblings or other relatives, if possible. These will give you a general idea about the temperament and structure of your puppy but are not guarantees. There are methods of testing litters and ranking them on an objective form. Two are most commonly used: Puppy Puzzle and the litter evaluation as described by the Monks of New Skete. The temperament of the puppy you choose may not be suitable for your home environment. When people are looking for a puppy as a show prospect, they look for things such as structure, "attitude" and movement. People who wish to use their puppy in Schutzhund, look for a strong play drive. Still others look for a temperament suitable for a home with children in a neighborhood of small children. There are tests for each of these traits. Ask the breeder if the tests were performed on all members of the litter and what the test scores were. If you don't know what the test scores mean, ask for a print-out of the test. Some breeders are trying to breed puppies that conform to the standards set by the Canadian Kennel Club or the American Kennel Club as to what a German Shepherd Dog is supposed to look like. To do that, they try to breed away from serious faults in structure, movement and temperament in order to maximize what is good in their dogs. The German Shepherd Club of America has an Illustrated Standard posted on its web site available to all serious breeders and buyers. The following are the faults listed in the CKC Book of Dogs for the GSD that must be considered in any breeding program as they are all inherited: Disqualifications Faults that should not be present in any GSD or any of their relatives. Should not be used for breeding. My name is Missy, and I'm a 7-year-old shepherd with a heart full of love to give. I promise to be the most loyal and caring companion you've ever had. I'm a perfect gal for a family with kids! I even attend Edmonton Humane Society summer camp with the kids. I get excited to greet all the kids and have them throw the ball for me! Now, let's talk about my preferences and needs. I've had some experiences with other dogs that left me feeling a bit fearful and unsure. That's why I'm looking for a single dog home where I can be your one and only furry friend. I know that might sound like a lot to ask, but I promise to fill your life with so much joy and affection that you won't need anyone else! Because of my past experiences, it's important for me to find an adopter who understands my limitations and is patient enough to help me overcome them. I'm working on my reactivity, and I believe that with the right guidance, I can learn to feel more comfortable around other dogs. An experienced adopter who is willing to work on this with me would be a dream come true. If you're the kind and patient person I'm looking for, willing to help me grow and overcome my fears, I promise to be by your side through thick and thin. Let's embark on this journey of love, trust, and companionship together. Are you ready to be my hero? I was recently spayed and had a dental with a tooth extraction prior to going up for adoption.
