Part of that responsibility includes doing everything possible to assure their well being after they go to a new home. While all quality dog foods will provide everything needed to sustain life, virtually all of them are cooked during the manufacturing process. The heat from cooking causes much of the nutrients to be lost during the process. NuVet Plus is cold processed allowing all of the benefits of its rich nutrients to be retained, giving your new puppy an extra layer of protection, especially during the most critical first year of life. When a puppy is moved away from its mother and siblings to live with its new family, the immune system is weakened by the stress of adoption and exposure to bacteria and viruses in its new home. So starting NuVet Plus now is important to helping your puppy grow into a healthy adult. The vaccine series is also started during this time period. Vaccines are only effective if the immune system can respond properly. If the immune system is distracted by combating an actual disease processor and it does not receive the nutrients required to keep it strong during times of stress, the health of the puppy is at risk. The best way to prevent illness during this critical time is to provide the nutritional support required for proper immune system function. About NuVet Plus - NuVet Plus is a synergistic combination of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals known to boost immune system function. FDA registered pharmaceutical laboratory, and cold processed to maximize the potency of the nutrients. NuVet Labs has been in business since and has never had a product recall. Additional information may be found on the NuVet Labs website www. NuVet Plus for Canines and NuVet Plus for Felines provide the very best human-grade, natural ingredients available, and utilize the latest advances in medical, veterinary, and nutritional science. NuVet Plus is not available in stores or directly to the general public. You can only purchase NuVet Plus when you get a recommendation only from a pet professional. Made with Real Chicken Liver. This is a family of Pug lovers who are about the advancement of the Pug breed as well as the health and wellbeing of each and every one of their pups. The family lives and raises their Pugs on a one-acre plot with plenty of room for running and playing. They even teach their Pugs to swim! All of their Pugs are fed a healthy diet of quality food and vitamins and have the freedom to play with lots of toys. When you purchase a pup from pug-puppy. They love their dogs and show commitment to the betterment of the breed in everything they do. But how can you spot reputable breeders when you start searching for a Pug puppy? Here are some tips to help you out. A good breeder will… 1. Issue a health guarantee Make sure that your breeder of choice offers a health guarantee. A reputable Pug breeder will write up a binding health guarantee for all of their puppies. The guarantee protects you against any genetic defects or diseases. It shows that the breeder is confident that their puppies are bred according to best practices. This means if you can no longer look after your pup for some reason, you will be expected to return the puppy to the breeder rather than taking them to a shelter. Provide standard health clearances Your breeder should have full health clearances for both parent Pugs. Good breeders often provide some early health-check clearances for their pups too, although some health clearances simply cannot be carried on such young pups. Issue a written bill of sale Reputable breeders offer written bills of sale to all of their new Pug parents. This bill of sale should be signed and will outline all the roles and responsibilities to be taken on by the buyer and seller as part of the transaction. Vaccinate their puppies All puppies should be up to date on their vaccinations before being homed with new families. Your breeder of choice should be able to provide evidence of these vaccinations. Reputable breeders welcome prospective parents into their homes to see the puppies. Follow age guidelines Puppies should never leave the litter before 8 weeks of age. Any breeder offering pups for adoption before this time is not following best practices. In fact, this could be quite damaging for the puppy developmentally. A reputable breeder will keep their pups at home until eight to twelve weeks so that they can be properly socialized and spend that crucial time with their mother and litter-mates. Answer your questions Last, but not least, a reputable breeder will be knowledgeable. In most cases, they will also want to ask you plenty of questions to ensure that their precious pups are going to good homes. We have a strict selection process that takes a variety of factors into account. That way we can ensure that only the best breeders end up on our lists. This way we know that our chosen breeders offer genetically sound and healthy puppies. Health testing shows a commitment to the health and wellbeing of each Pug. Contact information Any breeder that does not offer up their contact information is a big red flag. A reputable breeder will make it easy for you to get in contact with them by providing telephone numbers, email addresses, and they will usually have a well-established website as well. It shows a commitment to breeding best practices. Event participation Breeders who also compete in doggie events are often some of the best. Because these people tend to be dog lovers par excellence. They live and breathe for their Pugs and are proud to show them off in public. They are also more likely to have a high level of breed knowledge — an excellent sign for a breeder. Breed club membership There are lots of breed clubs out there that breeders can register with. These clubs have rules, regulations, and membership fees. If your breeder is registered with the Pug Dog Club of America, this is a great sign showing commitment to the Pug breed. Recognition awards Lastly, we look out for awards! Institutions like the AKC recognize the efforts and achievements of top breeders. The very best will be awarded the AKC recognition of merit award. During this time we recommend getting everything ready before your new arrival rattles through the front door. Your puppy will need: a crate for sleeping and training during the early days quality puppy-grade food a leash and harness plenty of toys You may also wish to purchase a puppy gate if there are areas of your home that you want to keep your Pug away from. This is all about making your home as safe as possible for your new arrival. Make sure anything that could potentially cause harm to your pup is removed. Clear your schedule Having a Pug puppy is a bit like having a human baby. So make sure to clear your schedule and get all of those errands done ahead of time! Once they arrive… 4. Avoid crowds Hold your excitement. That means no crowds. Try to keep the home environment as stress-free as possible so that your puppy can settle in and start to feel part of the family. Crate training is the first step. Lay down a regular routine from the get to and your Pug will be good as gold in no time.

Northern Indiana based, Bruiser Bulldogs offers purebred English Bulldog Puppies for sale to loving adopters seeking to find a higher quality English Bulldog. As English Bulldog breeders , Mitch and Erica Wysong have dedicated themselves to a lifelong journey of changing the culture and societal pressures of poor breeding practices within the English Bulldog Community. Mitch and Erica believe in producing a healthy English Bulldog puppy first and foremost. Through years of research and development, Bruiser Bulldogs is leading a new movement away from the overdone, wrinkled bulldog that has been long plagued by health problems. By embracing a healthier, more athletic look they are able to ensure that each and every English Bulldog Puppy for sale by Bruiser Bulldogs is supported by a platform of health tested, clean genetics. Upon adoption, each family that takes on the responsibility of a Bruiser Bulldog enters into an active and vibrant communal family of bulldog owners. Mitch and Erica believe it is their responsibility to provide emotional and mental support for the lifetime of each and every English Bulldog puppy they produce. To ensure the success of every adoption, Bruiser Bulldogs will always be committed to helping Bruiser Bulldog adopters care for their English Bulldogs to the best of their ability. I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. As English Bulldog Breeders, how do you breed for a healthier Bulldog? Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other bulldog breeders from improving the health of their Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes them unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities and produce high quality English Bulldogs for sale. I have been looking for English Bulldog Puppies for sale near me. Where are you located? We are located in the Northeast corner of Indiana. We just happen to be about 2. Caring Grooming: their shorthaired coat needs regular brushing: every day in the shedding season spring and autumn and three-to-five times a week in the rest of the year. Activity level With two highly energetic parent breeds, these dogs need an active life, so be ready to spend several hours a day keeping your pet busy. A Labrador Shepherd is generally 20 to 26 inches tall cm. Besides being active, you should have a large house, with a yard to provide her with enough space to move around. The Labrador Shepherd likes cold climates rather than hot weather, so be sure to have the ability to keep her comfortable all year. Further Reading Top 10 Dog Sports 2. They have it in their blood, and can successfully do police work, including searching, tracking, rescue, or guard work. If you care about your flowers and plants, you should also consider building an enclosure to keep your dog away from them. When you bring her inside, provide her with toys and games to keep her busy. She will enjoy any activity that stimulates her mind, such as dog puzzles or training sessions. The vacuum cleaner will be your new best friend German Shepherd Lab Mix is a double-coated breed, which means they have an undercoat next to the skin with longer hair over the top. Dogs from this crossbreed shed a lot, especially when the seasons change. If you want to keep her hair shiny and healthy, you should take time to brush her for at least minutes, three-to-five times a week. A consistent brushing schedule will help you reduce the amount of hair around the house. Besides brushing, you should include in your schedule: cleaning her ears once a week , brushing her teeth at least three times a week , and cleaning her eyes when needed. While this sounds like a lot, on the other hand, she only needs to take a bath about once a month. Always buy non-toxic toys, and substitute them with new ones as soon as they start deteriorating to avoid accidents. Your dog will need some strong toys, adapted to her age. Most hybrids tend to have a balanced personality, but as your puppy could be the result of more crosses , she may not inherit the exact characteristics you want in a dog; your future dog is prone to a series of health issues, caused by her bloodline. Obesity, hip and elbow dysplasia, eye diseases and diabetes are a lot more common with these dogs, but she could also develop epilepsy, skin allergies, bloat or cardiovascular diseases, these being common among Labradors and German Shepherds. From my point of view, most estimations work well for average dogs. You should buy your dog from a responsible breeder In most cases, a Labrador Shepherd has high potential and is a great candidate for the title of the perfect family dog. However, as mentioned before, hybrid dogs could have unpredictable coat colors, personalities, and health issues, so buying your puppy from a reliable source is as close as you can get to a clear image about your future dog. Generally, this hybrid can be 26 inches 66 cm tall and can weigh up to 88 pounds 40 kg. Taking into account the height and weight of its German Shepherd and Labrador mix parents, this crossbreed is a medium to a large-sized dog. So measurements can still vary more or less from that range. Good news for you! It will shower you with love and loyalty, and make you proud with its intelligence and playfulness. Do you think you can deal with this? Shepradors has a life expectancy of 10 to 12 years, but some of them can reach this age. We all want our pets to live longer and spend more years with us, so read this section to avoid and better prepare against genetic illnesses. Conclusion As you could see above, when buying a Sheprador you get the best of two great breeds. I think that this mix of German Shepherd and Labrador Retriever makes for the perfect family dog — kind, loyal, patient with children, and protective. However, they have endless energy and require a lot of time and attention, which makes them suitable for active families only. So are you ready to handle such a dog? Leave us a comment below and tell us about your personal experience with this unique crossbreed. My first Shepherd grew up as I did and wanted to be where I was at all times. I got my second dog as a 16th birthday present, and her loyalty for me was just as strong as my first. I hope that my contribution to Animalso will help others find dogs who give them that same unconditional love. But I adopted my little Hank recently and he seems both very playful and very cuddly. Lab German Shepherd Mix Training The Lab crossed with a German Shepherd is a brilliant dog, but it may need more than simple traditional training techniques to train this dog. The following tricks will help you make your dog obey you in no time. The Clicker Technique Learn how to train your dog using a clicker. Press this, and you will hear an audible click, a sound that dog loves very much. The clicker may be used in all kinds of tricks, but the most common is for positive reinforcement. Just click the clicker when your dog can follow the trick and then click again if you want to repeat the behavior. Invest in a good clicker which is available in most pet stores online. This can contribute to obesity and other health problems related to being overweight. Reward good behavior by patting your dog, playing with him or giving him a good scratch. Tell your dog what a good dog he is and combines this with a lot of pats as reinforcement. Every dog takes his time so you must be patient. His bed should at the same place where he found it the first time while his food bowls should also be in the same area. Consistency is the key to training dogs important stuff. Also, consider talking to everyone at home regarding your rules and commands to reinforce consistency in training your dog. Train Your Dog In A Familiar Environment Dogs like the Lab are easily distracted; therefore you must train your pup in a quiet and familiar environment first before you take him out for further training. Start inside a quiet room with only you and him. You can train him outdoors once he is less distracted to noise and the presence of other pets and people. You may also opt for professional training for your Lab German Shepherd mix dog if you want your pup to grow up and become a service dog or police dog. German Shepherd Lab Mix and Families Lab German Shepherds can be great family dogs because these dogs love to be with their masters and to please them every way they can. These are patient with children and will never roughhouse or bite. They can even tolerate toddlers and very intense games like dress up and role play games. Lab German Shepherd mix dogs will love to be with other pets and even other dogs. They are not domineering and will never cause a fight. The Lab German Shepherd mix may become anti-social and may become aggressive with people or other dogs when they are not introduced to people and other pets early on. Your dog should be trained first and exposed to other dogs and people to prevent this untoward behavior.
The German Shepherd? Photo by Karen Sanders Studio on Shutterstock German Shepherd Rottweiler mixes can be very intelligent dogs and even though they might be easy to train for experienced dog owners, beginners might find themselves struggling. These dogs are not as sensitive to the handler and have a high drive while being an all-rounder. Of course, all of the above depend on your exact breeding line. As many of you probably know, the Rottweiler and German Shepherd are both prone to diseases like hip dysplasia. You can control this by choosing the right breeder. A reputable breeder that tests all dogs for health will make sure that everything checks out, from the hips to the heart and eyes. Do not fall into the trap of mixing the biggest Rottie with the German Shepherd that wins the prize in every sloped back competition. Sloping backs are a real issue with the German Shepherd while the Rottie mainly has to fight with too much weight gain, especially during puppyhood. While many sources only mention up to 8 years of age for the Rottie, I actually believe that due to proper breeding, a healthy diet and environment as well as exercise, your Rottie can live well beyond that age. The exact lifespan depends heavily on various factors, of course. What most people are asking with this question is how even-tempered the Rottweiler German Shepherd mix can be. That may look surprising but the Rottweiler is actually very good with kids. Countless hours of research, watching videos, interacting with them live — all these things will help with determining if the German Shepherd Rottweiler mixed breed dog is the right choice for you. Be prepared to take on the leadership and treat your furry buddy with respect and sensitivity and they can be the most loving companion. The Rottweiler is known for not being one that forgives any serious mistakes, so make sure you have the experience and knowledge that is required. No matter what the exact fur will look like, get ready for serious shedding twice a year. Apart from shedding season, regular brushing should suffice. Both dog breeds have an undercoat which makes them suitable pets for colder climates. How big do Shepweilers actually get? Male German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix Height: 24 — 27 inches 60—69 cm Male German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix Weight: 85 — lbs kg As you probably suspected, females are smaller and lighter, even very tall females are roughly the same height as a small male Rottweiler , for example. Weight and height prognosis are hard enough as is, giving these numbers for mixed breeds is a lot more unpredictable. How Much Are Shepweilers? Papers may not be your focus, but the fact that purebred dogs can be health tested a lot easier since the pool of genetic diseases is smaller, makes searching a proper breeder easier. Check our lifetime cost article for more hint: the cost of my Rottie runs in the tens of thousands of dollars. Both breeds can have great obedience skills and excellent drive, just make sure you get a healthy dog that fits to your lifestyle. Do you have a GSD Rottweiler mix? Share with us your experiences in the comments down below! The resulting dog is a genetic gamble in terms of health and temperament and offers no advantage to a health-tested, properly selected purebred puppy. These are misnomers describing how affectionate and amusing this mixed breed can be. The German Shepherd Dog was developed in the late s in Germany to herd sheep and keep predators away from flocks. During World War I, their fame quickly spread to other parts of the world, and they were then considered one of the toughest and most hardworking dogs out there. Meanwhile, the purebred Rottweiler is believed to be a descendant of drover or cattle-driving dogs left by the Roman empire in Rottweiler, Germany. From the Middle Ages up until the s, the Rottweiler accompanied local butchers to the market while carrying money around their necks. Over the years, Rottweilers also served as guard dogs, draft dogs, rescue dogs, and police dogs. As evident, the parents of the Shepweiler are prime working dogs. If you are looking for a pup with similarly outstanding characteristics, look no further than the German Shepherd Rottweiler hybrid. German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix Appearance Like its parent breeds, the Shepweiler is an athletic dog with a muscular body, impressive muzzle, strong jaw, and long legs. They often exhibit a black nose and blue or brown eyes, which can manifest heterochromia. Moreover, their ears stand erect when they listen but hang down when at rest. As a result of having mixed blood, expect your Shepweiler to have either a short coat like a short-haired GSD or a long coat like a long-haired Rottweiler. Their coats are also often straight. In terms of coat colors, they usually come in black, brown, white, fawn, and tan. But since they are a mixed breed, this is quite unpredictable, so they may exhibit any of the colors of their parents. Rare colors like blue and deep brown can also be inherited if they have a blue German Shepherd or a liver GSD parent. To better appreciate their physical attributes, watch this four-month-old Rottweiler German Shepherd mix: German Shepard Rottweiler Mix puppy week 12 German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix Size and Weight Rotten Shepherds are massive dogs that weigh around 70 to pounds and stand between 22 and 27 inches tall. They reach maturity at about 18 months old, and by this time, the males are expected to be bigger than the females. To illustrate, males usually grow between 24 and 27 inches in height and weigh 75 to pounds. Meanwhile, female Rottweiler German Shepherd hybrids only reach 22 to 25 inches and weigh 70 to pounds. German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix Temperament and Personality Both German Shepherds and Rottweilers have a reputation for being aggressive, and it is said that this undesirable trait is passed down to their offspring. The GSD Rottweiler mix can be an intimidating guard dog once trained to follow commands. But they will never become vicious attack dogs unless they are conditioned or provoked to be that way. Shepweilers can be fun playmates for kids of all ages. But it is still crucial to teach your children how to interact with this mixed-breed dog since they are relatively large canines. As a playful dog, your Shepweiler can make sudden movements without meaning to, and this can hurt small kids. Moreover, Shepweilers can be pretty amicable with other dogs as long as they are introduced slowly and properly. However, when it comes to cats, this dog may have the instinct to chase. It is vital to introduce your Shepweiler to your cat slowly and consistently under your supervision so they can coexist peacefully. Shepweilers also tend to be wary of strangers regardless of whether they are kids or adults because of their herding nature. But this can still be worked on if they are given proper socialization. Overall, how your German Shepherd Rottweiler dog will behave depends on their training and the environment where you raised them. If you are unsure how to deal with this cross, you can always hire professional trainers to do the job for you. While most of this crossbreed is generally healthy, some may develop a few health issues as they reach old age. The list below discusses some of the health problems common to both the German Shepherd and Rottweiler breed that may be passed on to a Shepweiler: Eyelid Issues Entropion and Ectropion : Entropion is an eye condition that occurs when the eyelids roll inward. This causes the hair on the surface of the lid to rub against the cornea resulting in pain, corneal ulcers, perforations, and pigment forming on the cornea. Ectropion , on the other hand, causes the lower eyelids to appear droopy since they are rolled outward. Hip and Elbow Dysplasia: This is a joint-related disease that typically affects large-breed dogs. Severe pain accompanies the deterioration of the joints in the hips and elbows, which could debilitate a dog. A German Shepherd hybrid suffering from hip or elbow dysplasia will exhibit signs of lameness and decreased mobility. Osteochondritis Dissecans: This is a developmental disease that occurs in large breed dogs that grow too fast. The onset of osteochondritis dissecans is typically between six and nine months and tends to occur more often in male dogs. Aortic Stenosis: This is a heart condition that is more common in certain dog breeds, such as this German Shepherd crossbred. Aortic stenosis is characterized by a narrowing of the aortic valve of the heart. It is crucial to mitigate the risk of your Shepweiler developing the diseases mentioned above. That said, this section explores how to take care of your Shepweiler to ensure it gets to live the best life possible. Food and Diet The recommended diet for a German Shepherd Rottweiler must be formulated for a large breed with medium to high energy levels. Do not give in to the temptation of overfeeding them since they tend to gain weight easily. You can give them high-quality treats , but they should be limited since it causes weight gain and bloat. However, a number of pet owners suggest that they should be brushed lightly every day. It is recommended to bathe your Shepweiler as needed but not too often to avoid skin dryness, irritation, or rashes. During bath time, you should clean their ears and check for any signs of redness and abnormalities. It would also be best to trim their nails regularly to prevent cracking and splitting. Consult with your vet about properly brushing their teeth and what products are recommended for their age. As for exercise, Shepweilers need plenty of mental and physical stimulation. You would need to spend no less than 90 minutes a day engaging them in activities. They can also become overly anxious or bored. Since Shepweilers are massive dogs, they are best suited to properties with a fenced yard where they can run and play. This breed also enjoys going for walks, visiting the dog park, playing fetch, and other agility sports. However, reputable breeders are known to charge more since their dogs are screened thoroughly for health problems. Mixed breeds like the Rottweiler German Shepherd mix are even pricier than a purebred German Shepherd dog or Rottweiler. Moreover, aside from the initial cost of the Shepweiler pup, expect to shell out more money on essential puppy items. These initial purchases ensure that your Shepweiler is comfortable as it transitions into your home. Below is a breakdown of the initial expenses of owning a German Shepherd Rottweiler: Type of Expense. These two breeds are in fact very similar, both with German heritage, and therefore the German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix is a fantastic crossbreed. These dogs are intelligent, friendly and good natured, making them excellent family members. You may need some experience with large breeds before you think about purchasing a German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix, but read on below to see whether this pup is the right addition for your home. They are very strong and intelligent and the purpose of breeding them was to eliminate health issues and negative traits that their parent breeds held. The German Shepherd had a controversial past. These dogs were used in World War One and were seen as German dogs which is why they were shunned. However, these dogs regained popularity with the public in the s and have been a favorite with the police and military for decades, due to their hardworking and loyal nature. The Rottweiler also originated from Germany and were strong drover dogs. As technology advanced they were not need to herd cattle anymore, but they were known for their great work ethic. These working dogs continued to be useful members of society and, since the s, have been guide dogs, guard dogs, therapy dogs and search and rescue dogs. Your dog may look more like their German Shepherd parent or their Rottweiler parent. However, we can make assumptions based on past litters. These puppies are normally born in litter sizes of around eight. It does not matter which parent breed is the sire or the dam because they are both similar sizes. Always make sure that you buy from a reputable breeder. Appearance This mix dog is a medium to large breed and is normally fully matured between 18 months and 2 years of age. Normally, these designer dogs stand between 22 to 27 inches in height and weigh between 75 to lbs in weight. These dogs normally have floppy ears, but if they take after their German Shepherd GSD parent more, they may become pointy as they mature. Coat This mix breed normally has a medium, dense coat, although they can have longer coats. Unfortunately, these dogs shed a lot! They are not hypoallergenic and are not the pet for those with allergies. The amount they shed can be helped with regular grooming, but we will go into more detail about that later on. Color The German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix almost always has a black and tan coloring, just like both their parent breeds. Temperament The German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix has a strong personality and is certainly suited to those who have experience with large dog breeds. That being said, these pups are loyal and loving, bonding to their owners and making an excellent family dog. With the right upbringing, these dogs are extremely tolerable of everyone — adults, children and other dogs and animals. They can sometimes be aloof with strangers and other pets when they are younger, but with the right socialization this can be fixed. With both parent breeds historic working breeds, it is no surprise that the German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix is an active and energetic dog. This is one of the reasons they are not recommended for first time dog owners. These pups love to be outside and love to play games. The perfect companion, they love to be near you and like to please. Known Health Issues One of the main reasons for breeding the German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix was to eliminate health problems that their parent breeds face. While this certainly happened, these dogs are still prone to some health concerns. Some dogs show pain and lameness on one or both rear legs, but you may not notice any signs of discomfort in a dog with hip dysplasia. Elbow Dysplasia — this is a common condition in large breed dogs. It can be caused by different growth rates and can cause lameness. It can be fixed with surgery. Bloat — this affects both parent breeds and is potentially fatal. You need to know the symptoms of it. Feeding your dog smaller more frequent meals instead of one big meal can help to reduce the risk. Degenerative Myelopathy — this is a progressive disease of the spinal cord that can result in hind leg paralysis. There is no cure but there is treatment. It can be helped with intensive physical rehabilitation. Regular vet checkups and keeping an eye on your dog will ensure you can catch any of these issues before they become untreatable. Remember — buy from a reputable breeder and the chances your dog will suffer any health conditions will be greatly reduced. Trusted breeders will do health checks on both parent breeds and will not crossbreed if there is a chance of passing on any severe issues to offspring. Daily Life Now we know all about the traits and characteristics of the German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix, it is time to take a look at what life with one of these pups is really like. We will cover their food and diet, their exercise requirements and their grooming needs. Food And Diet It is no surprise that this large breed of dog needs a lot of food. You should be feeding the German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix roughly calories a day, which equates to around 5 cups of kibble. Of course, you should always double check the back of the food packet to see the exact amount of a certain food you should be feeding your dog based on their weight. Always check that the food you feed your German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix meets their nutritional requirements. Due to their high energy levels, they need high-quality protein in their diet. This can be reduced to two meals a day once they are fully grown. One thing to remember with the Shepweiler, as with other large breeds such as the Bernedoodle, is that because they are a large breed, they are more prone to bloat which can be dangerous. Smaller, more frequent meals will reduce the risk of bloat. This comprehensive guide will introduce you to everything you need to know about the strong and impressive, yet so cuddly teddy bear, that is the mix of a German Shepherd and a Rottweiler. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. The price will largely depend on the pedigree of the parents and the type of breeder. However, you may have a hard time finding a specialist breeder for this hybrid. These dogs are energetic so if your family is on the active side, this may be the pup for you. And as a bonus, they get on really well with kids and other animals. He also likes to be congratulated on each of his achievements. He has all the qualities of a sporty, enduring, strong, and flexible dog; it will therefore be the ideal companion if you are looking for a dog who can follow you in all your physical activities. However, being very close and dependent on his owners, he can show signs of jealousy if you pay more attention to someone other than him. This is why it will be essential to work on his sociability and get to know your dog well to recognize when he is uncomfortable in certain situations. This hybrid will also make a fantastic guardian, thanks to its fearful and robust parents. Are These Dogs Good for Families? However, be aware that this large dog could accidentally injure smaller children by playing too rough. Firmly train your dog not to jump on toddlers and educate your children on how to behave with the dog to avoid any potential problems. German Shepherd Rottweiler mixes are quite friendly with other dogs, provided they are introduced slowly and correctly. However, when it comes to cats or other small animals, your Shepweiler may have an instinct to hunt, especially if he has not been used to being around them from a young age. In the end, it really depends on how much training and socialization you give your dog. Prone to certain genetic conditions Family Compatibility Can be good with proper socialization and training Other Names Rottie, Rott German Shepherd: The German Shepherd is a popular and versatile breed recognised for its intelligence, loyalty, and agility. These canines are frequently utilised as police and military dogs due to their sharp senses and remarkable trainability. German Shepherds have a powerful, muscular frame and a unique black and tan or sable coat. They require frequent exercise and mental stimulation to flourish and may make good family pets if properly taught and socialised. Rottweiler: The Rottweiler is a muscular and powerful breed with a self-assured and loyal personality. These canines were traditionally developed as labour dogs to move livestock and defend land. Rottweilers are recognised for their strength and protective tendencies, which make them great guard dogs. Their coat is black with rust-coloured patterns on the chest, legs, and face. While they are inherently protective, early socialisation and training are essential for ensuring that their behaviour remains balanced. Rottweilers may be a wonderful addition to any household, bringing loyalty and companionship for many years. Both breeds have historic pasts and were first developed for specific purposes. While the Rottweiler has its origins in ancient Rome, when it was used as a herding and guard dog, the German Shepherd was bred in Germany in the late 19th century as a multipurpose herding dog. The consequence of crossing these two breeds is a hybrid that combines their greatest qualities. Due to their adaptability, these dogs have grown in favour as working dogs, service dogs, and devoted companions. Appearance of German Shepherd Rottweiler The German Shepherd Rottweiler mix is a visually striking breed with a strong and muscular build. They typically have a well-proportioned body, deep chest, and a broad head. The coat of a German Shepherd Rottweiler mix can vary, but it usually features a short and dense fur that requires regular grooming. The colouration of the coat is often influenced by both parent breeds, resulting in a mix of black, tan, and sometimes mahogany. These dogs have an imposing presence and exude strength and confidence through their appearance. Temperament of German Shepherd Rottweiler The temperamental characteristics of the parent breeds are carried on to the developing German Shepherd Rottweiler hybrid. They are known for their wit, devotion, and guardian spirit. These dogs are very trainable and are excellent in a variety of professions and activities, including beneficial work, search and rescue, and obedience training. The German Shepherd Rottweiler mix is loyal and friendly with their family members, although they can be nervous of outsiders and have strong guarding instincts. To make sure kids have a well-balanced temperament and stay amiable and approachable in all circumstances, early socialisation and training are important. Behaviour of German Shepherd Rottweiler The behavior of a German Shepherd Rottweiler mix is influenced by its genetic heritage and upbringing. These dogs are energetic and require regular exercise to channel their energy in a positive way. Engaging them in physical activities, such as walks, playtime, and mental stimulation, helps prevent behavioral issues stemming from boredom or pent-up energy. Basically, there is zero authenticity with pet stores. When it comes to adopting any animal from a pet store, there is an increased risk of unforeseen health or genetic problems. You also cultivate a life-long relationship with the breeder, meaning support is available to you anytime you may need it. With My Golden Retriever Puppies , you have the option to come and visit both the puppy and the breeder in person! Golden Retrievers are an adaptable breed, meaning they are better at adapting to seasonal changes and various types of climate than certain other breeds. Goldens sport a double-coat, which ensures that these sweet pups are able to tolerate slightly colder temperatures than their friends from other breeds. Your pup deserves better than that, which is why here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we ensure high-quality care is taken of your pet at all times. For more about the true price of a golden retriever puppy, you can read our full price breakdown here. Location Information for Florida Customers Our home office is located in Ohio, but we understand that long-distance travel can be inconvenient. If you prefer to meet a breeder in person, they may be able to offer private visits at their home. Of course! Here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we value family and authenticity, which is why we always guarantee our pups through our 2-year genetic health guarantee. Like adopting a Golden Retriever from a pet store, there is an increased risk when adopting a pup from a rescue center or shelter as well. For example, pups purchased through a shelter or rescue center are far less likely to come with the kinds of health guarantees and reassurances that a breeder can provide. The lifespan of a black Labrador is 12 years, and some purebred black lab puppies can live even longer given the right diet, exercise and a healthy dose of luck. He was my constant companion almost into adulthood. He came on countless runs through the woods, spent hours playing ball in the backyard, but also sat with his head gently rested in my lap whenever I was sad. It has always amazed me that despite the black Labrador being the most common color, it is in some ways the least appreciated. With an amazing history of working alongside human companions, and a fabulous temperament, this pup really is one to watch. This black retriever has been favored by the hunting community for generations. But they were bred from a fishing companion that has been extinct now for nearly fifty years. This breed was also most likely the route of the rather different, and bigger, Newfoundland. Albeit often with white markings. Do you ever feel like you see more black Labs around than any other color? The first chocolate Labradors that we know of were born in the s, but colors other than black were not at all popular until the mid 90s. Horribly, for many generations most puppies born with chocolate or yellow coats were routinely euthanized at birth! If a puppy has inherited the gene for black coat color from either of her parents, this is the color that her coat will be. These both come from a pigment called eumelanin. More eumelanin leads to a black Lab, less leads to a chocolate. Genes come in pairs. Here we are dealing with B genes at the B locus. B is dominant over b. So a pairing of BB or Bb will give a black coat. Only bb will give a brown coat. A puppy gets one gene from each parent. With me so far? This is because these genes are also effected by another set of genes, at the E locus. E is dominant, and does not get in the way of the B genes. But e is recessive, and this does. It has the potential to stop the B genes giving a black or brown dog, and gives us yellow Labrador pups. And these all interact with each other differently to give different coat colors. This diagram explains them nicely: You can see from these combinations alone that the most common result is a black Lab puppy. But also how chocolate and yellow Labs were hidden for a time through careful matings and selective culling. But there is another twist to the black coat color tale. Occasionally a Lab is born with the dilute gene. This genetic twist essentially tones down the shade of the dark coat color. In the same way that the chocolate Lab looks silver when this gene is activated, the black Lab looks charcoal. In genetic terms, this dilute gene lives at the D locus. Popularity of Black Labs Black Labs have always been the most prevalent color, but their popularity has changed over the years. In the sporting dog community owners of hunting dogs still often prefer the black coat, but pet and show owners often show a preference these days for the paler colors. Chocolate and yellow Labs can even fetch higher prices from some breeders, not to mention the less common fox red and silver tones. Black Dogs Are Harder To Rehome There is a sad phenomenon in pet shelters, which impacts the rehoming rate of black dogs. Prospective owners often pass them by, regardless of temperament, in favor of the brighter colored pups on offer. But these adopters are missing a trick, because black dogs have so much to offer beyond their coat. And what they do offer differs slightly between the Labrador types. English Black Labs — bred for show There are two strains of Labrador. One was bred for the show ring, and the other was bred for the field. Although they are both Labs in the true sense, these separate strains can be quite different and are easy to pick apart if you know what you are looking for. English black Labradors are often preferred by pet homes as well as owners interested in the ring. The English black Lab has a reputation for being a little slower to mature, and a lot more playful. American Black Labs — bred to work American black Labs are slimmer, less excitable but more driven. They stand around the same height, but their heads are less broad and their tails often have less of the otter quality that their show companions sport. Although still friendly, they are perhaps less inclined to play than their show bred cousins. And in contrast to this have a stronger drive to retrieve and hunt. The English black Lab was bred for looks over purpose. Their broad head and barrel chest is matched with a straight, thick furred tail and a heavier weight on the scales. Black Labradors bred for show or as pets tend to be slower to mature, with a more playful personality, and are arguably less likely to run off after wildlife! Which Type Suits You? American black Labs may need more exercise and mental stimulation than English black Labs. They will benefit from gun dog style training involving retrieving exercises. Black Lab Characteristics Although there is no denying that the different Labrador strains have separated to a fair dramatic degree, these are still all fundamentally black Labs. And they do have some features in common that makes them who they are. The Lab has a double coat, excellent for keeping them warm in and out of the water. Their thick straight tail is described as having an otter-like appearance. And they are almost all one single color with no other markings. Mismarked Labs rear their heads from time to time, but this is generally just a case of white toes or a splash of white on their chests. Grooming and Coat Care Your black Lab needs no special grooming due to his coat color. In fact, the grooming requirements of your Labrador Retriever are some of the simplest among dog breeds. Their coats are designed to take care of themselves. Though your furniture and floors may benefit if your dog has a twice daily brush when shedding heavily. Other than that Labs have a wonderful coat that requires only occasional washing. The eventual size of your black Lab puppy will depend a little upon their upbringing, and a lot upon whether they are from American or English lines. An adult black Lab will weigh anywhere from 55 to 80 lbs, and be from 21 to .The English black Lab will tend to be closer to the heavier end of the spectrum, and the American nearer to the lower. Black Lab Temperament Labradors are well known for being friendly. Perhaps sometimes a little too friendly! This bouncy breed is more likely to leap up and lick a burglar than to stop him in the act. The downside of this is that they can be easily distracted at the dog park by wanting to greet everyone they come across. Their jolly, lively nature can also lead them into trouble with people who are unsteady on their feet. Although lovably clumsy, this dog also has a brilliant brain. Intelligence Black Labradors have been bred for generations as hunting companions. Deliberately bred from dogs that were attentive to their handlers and relatively easy to teach commands to, they are absolutely an intelligent breed. Because to get that black coat expressed is just a matter of mating two dogs, whereas to get the recessive genes you need to at least partially make your breeding choices based upon the colors of the parents as well as factors to do with temperament and trainability. But the most important factor when bringing together two Lab lines should always be one of health. Training and Exercising Your Black Lab Black Labs are intelligent dogs and training is an absolute essential for them and their owners. RUnning, swimming, cycling, hiking and even dock diving are popular pass times. Although American Labs tend to be more driven to fetch, English Labradors are often still keen too. Both types need a good workout every day to keep them fit and healthy. And to help them relax at home. You can exercise your dog with a traditional walk, by going for a run together or through play. Retrieving games are a great way to give your Lab a lot of exercise without you having to travel quite such a long distance yourself. You can find some great ideas for games you and your Labrador can play together in this article. Black Lab Health The best way to avoid health problems is by purchasing a puppy from health tested parents. The main areas to be aware of are joint problems and eye problems. Hip and elbow dysplasia are common Lab complaints. This condition ranges in severity and an adult dog can have x rays to assess their joint health, and be given a score to let you know how well their joints have developed. To avoid your puppy suffering from this either both parents need to be Clear or one Clear one Carrier. If one is a carrier, your puppy might carry the gene too. A general eye exam once a year will make sure that there are no other vision problems manifesting over time. Most breeders advertise online now, so you will need to be careful to have a good chat with them before committing to buying a puppy. Do not put down a deposit before meeting the mother and the litter at their home. The mum should be relaxed and happy to meet you, and for you to handle her pups. If you are looking for a pet you will need to decide whether you think a show or working temperament is better suited to your lifestyle and family needs. Make sure the breeder willingly shows you copies of health certificates from both parents. As a minimum they should be PRA clear, have a recent clear eye check from a vet, have good hip scores and an elbow score of 0. If one parent has been shown as a carrier for dwarfism or PRA, be sure to check that the other has been tested clear. Good breeders ask lots of questions because they care about what happens to their pups, and will be open and willing to answer all of your questions too. Rescuing a Black Lab Rescuing a dog is a great thing to do if your circumstances are right. And rescuing a black Lab is even better, as this color can be hard to home. Reputable rescues will work hard to match you to the right dog, and help you to make a choice that fits in well with your family. Rescuing such a dog can be very rewarding. We hope you will find our article Should you adopt a Labrador helpful. You can view a list of rehoming societies on our rescue page. They will also offer plenty of support and help once you bring your dog home. Especially when it comes to behavioral and training problems. White or grey hairs may start forming around their muzzle, giving them a bearded or grizzled look. This pale hair is nothing to worry about and happens to most black Labs sooner or later. As your black Lab reaches old age, you might find that he slows down a bit. His typical energetic black Lab personality may mellow. He will be less boisterous, and more inclined to spend the day in bed than bouncing up and down by your side. The average lifespan of a black Lab is around 12, but if you are lucky your pup might be with you for 14 or more years. A more comfortable bed, ideally with memory foam, can help support those ageing joints. Ramps for accessing the car can really help them out too. Depending upon advice from your vet you might also want to switch them to a senior dog food , which is easier to digest and has additives that some believe can help slow the pace of arthritis. Life Span Did You Know? Black Labrador Retrievers, or just Black Labs, are a common coat color variation of one of the most popular dog breeds. The Black Labrador Retriever is not necessarily a separate dog breed. Black Labs are still Labrador Retrievers; they just have a distinct coat color that is a specifically-bred characteristic. Like other Labrador Retrievers, Black Labs are energetic, playful, and affectionate dogs that make great family companions. Although they are active and energetic dogs, Labs are also known for their gentleness and patience with other family members. Well-socialized Black Labs tend to get along well with just about everyone including children, other dogs, pets, and even strangers. They are considered one of the kid-friendly dog breeds. As one of the most affectionate dog breeds , Black Labs thrive on attention, especially from their favorite humans. They are happiest when they are spending time with their families and receiving affection and attention from them. Despite their high energy, Labs are highly adaptable dogs. They do tend to be better suited to homes with fenced yards where they can run, but they also adapt well to apartments provided they get enough daily exercise, attention, and mental stimulation. They do well in just about any climate, but are sensitive to heat and extreme cold like many dog breeds. As such, they do not like to spend long periods of time alone. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a Black Labrador Retriever can include elbow dysplasia , hip dysplasia, heart disease, hereditary myopathy, cataracts, and progressive retinal atrophy. Another potential health concern is EIC exercise-induced collapse , which can occur in young adult Labs and has a genetic link. Because carriers can be identified by DNA tests, it is recommended that breeders test for them. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies and reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you talk to the breeder about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a large, deep-chested dog breed, Labrador Retrievers are at a higher risk for bloat. Labrador Retrievers are one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners. Although their high energy and puppylike exuberance can sometimes be a challenge, they are intelligent dogs that are eager to please. As long as training is kept consistent and focused on positive rewards and praise, novice owners still tend to do well with Black Labs. Puppy training classes are always an option and offer plenty of benefits aside from training too. Black Labs have a short, water-resistant double coat that sheds year-round and sheds heavier as seasons change. Depending on how active your Black Lab is and what they get into, they may need a bath more often, especially if they are swimming a lot. Weekly ear checks and careful cleanings when needed help prevent ear infections. Good dental care for dogs , like daily brushing and cleanings at the vet when needed, can help prevent painful dental diseases later in life. As one of the most active dog breeds , a Black Labrador Retriever will need a lot of daily activity to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus some playtime and time to run are a minimum. Your Black Lab will likely be up for more activity if you are. One of the facts about Labrador Retrievers is that they have an extended puppyhood. They tend to maintain a puppylike exuberance until they are years old. Although they do tend to mellow out as they get older, they are still active, energetic, and playful dogs. Once they are fully grown, you can try other things like hiking, running, dock diving, and more to find other activities you and your Black Lab can enjoy together. Fully-grown Black Labrador Retrievers usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Black Labs generally live for years on average. Black Labrador Retrievers came before the also-popular Chocolate Lab. All modern Chocolate Labs can be traced back to three Black Labs in the s. It was the December issue of .Featured Black Labrador Retriever Article.

The link has been copied! The Retro Pug breed is a delightful mix of charm and personality. As dog lovers, we find this modern twist on the classic Pug breed irresistibly endearing. Let's dive deeper into understanding this breed, its unique characteristics, potential health issues, and proper care techniques. Characteristics of Retro Pugs Retro Pugs are known for their distinct characteristics. Unlike their traditional Pug counterparts, these canines have longer legs, a leaner body, and a muzzle that's more prominent. As for their temperament, they inherit the charismatic and loving nature of regular Pugs. These dogs are excellent companions, brimming with affection for their human family. They also have an adventurous streak and enjoy playful interactions. One distinctive trait of the Retro Pug is their keenness for scent work. Their enhanced muzzle length gives them a superior sense of smell compared to regular Pugs, making them natural explorers. They love sniffing around the house, the yard, and while out on walks. One of the most prevalent issues is Hip Dysplasia , a condition that affects many breeds but can be particularly challenging for a heavy dog like the Retro Pug. Another concern is their susceptibility to separation anxiety. This emotional distress can occur when the dog is left alone for extended periods. It's not uncommon for Retro Pugs to develop destructive behaviors or excessive barking when feeling anxious. Despite these concerns, the Retro Pug's health issues are less severe compared to their Pug relatives. Their elongated muzzle makes them less prone to breathing issues, a common problem in brachycephalic breeds. Exercise Needs Retro Pugs are energetic dogs that require regular exercise. Short walks, games of fetch, and even agility training are great ways to keep them active. Remember, an older dog may need less strenuous exercise. Diet Their diet should be high in protein and low in fats and sugars. Be cautious about overfeeding as these dogs can quickly gain weight, contributing to Hip Dysplasia. Grooming Retro Pugs have a short, dense coat that requires minimal grooming. Regular brushing can help keep their coat clean and reduce shedding. Socialization Socializing your Retro Pug is vital. This breed is naturally sociable, so meeting other dogs, people, and experiencing different environments will enhance their confidence. Training Training a Retro Pug can be a delightful experience. With their intelligent and eager-to-please demeanor, they respond well to positive reinforcement techniques. These tiny balls of fur, with their round, curious eyes and boundless energy, will undoubtedly bring an infectious joy into your home. These intelligent dogs respond well to early training and socialization. Remember, their sharp sense of smell can be directed towards sniffing games, turning a typical training session into an exciting game of scent work. Puppies need more frequent meals, but portion control is essential to avoid overfeeding. A diet rich in high-quality protein is vital for their growth and development. Introduce them to different sounds, sights, and experiences. This helps in building their confidence, and it ensures they grow into a well-rounded and well-behaved dog. Gentle walks and light play sessions can keep them physically active without straining them. Diet Changes Older Retro Pugs may have different dietary needs. Depending on their health status, they might require a diet low in calories but high in fiber and quality protein. Always consult with your vet to determine the best diet for your aging Retro Pug. Health Checks Regular vet visits become even more important as your Retro Pug ages. Frequent health check-ups can help detect any potential health issues early, ensuring your furry friend can enjoy their golden years in comfort. These charming dogs are often full of life, bringing positivity and warmth to their families. Let's delve into understanding the temperament of Retro Pugs. Affectionate Companions Retro Pugs are known for their loving nature. They form strong bonds with their families, often following their favorite human from room to room. Their friendly disposition makes them the life of the party, often basking in the attention they receive from others. Playful Pooches Retro Pugs love to play. Whether it's a game of fetch in the backyard or an interactive toy, these dogs love to engage in fun activities. And despite being an older dog, many retain their playful nature well into their golden years. Adaptable Pets Living in both apartments and larger homes are possible due to their adaptable nature. As long as they receive adequate exercise and mental stimulation, these dogs are happy. Brave and Alert Despite their friendly nature, Retro Pugs can be quite alert and will notify their owners of anything unusual. They are brave little dogs, often forgetting their small size when standing up for their family. It involves understanding their needs and ensuring they're met. Emotional Needs Retro Pugs, like many breeds, are prone to separation anxiety. They crave companionship and do not do well when left alone for extended periods. Ensuring they have company most of the time is key to their emotional wellbeing. Mental Stimulation Retro Pugs are intelligent dogs and require mental stimulation. This can be achieved through training, games, and even interactive toys. Engaging their mind not only keeps them entertained but also strengthens your bond with them. Journal of comparative pathology, , .BioMed Central. New RVC research helps owners better understand the remaining life expectancy of dogs. She is a proud stay-at-home mom to her 2-year-old French Bulldog puppy, Stella! When she is not looking for adventure travel destinations, she loves to write! She writes for a wide variety of topics — with animals being one of her favorites. The resulting dog strongly resembles a Pug in many ways including its wrinkly skin and muscular build. However, they have longer snouts which reduce the risk of respiratory-related health issues. As mixed breeds, their parents can pass on traits specific to each dog breed. In the case of retro Pugs, their short-muzzled face is replaced with a longer snout that is more ideal for their health. The only downside of owning them is that they easily develop separation anxiety once left for a long time. Aside from retro Pug, you can also call them retro Mop or Jug dog which is adapted from crossing the breed names Pug and Jack Russell Terrier. Other amusing names include Mopshond and Moppie! Retro Pug vs. Retro Pugs are considered enhanced versions of the standard purebred Pug but how exactly do they differ? Dogs affected with this condition can have a combination of the elongated soft palate , stenotic nares , and everted laryngeal saccules. Some common symptoms include noisy breathing, excessive snoring, fatigue, and retching while swallowing. Aside from breathing problems, they are also less likely to have eye prolapse or cherry eye disease caused by having a small, squished face. Retro Pugs have been around for 10 to 15 years. Crossbreeding Pugs and Jack Russell Terriers have been practiced by many breeders for quite some time. It was only recently that the term retro Pug was used as the official name for this mixed breed. Traditional Pugs date back thousands of years ago in ancient China. Instead of a flattened face and bulging eyes, they had long muzzles and floppy ears. It was only within the last years when the trend for having flat faces started. Breeders forced these traits on their Pugs, not knowing the impact these could have on their health. They became popular in the European monarchy and were a personal favorite of Queen Victoria. Later in the 19th or early 20th century, long-faced Pugs made a comeback in the form of retro Pugs. Due to public awareness about the health problems or complications associated with short-muzzled breeds like Pugs, many groups began advocating to fix and provide alternatives to this problem. They aim to educate dog lovers and breeders to prefer retro Pugs over standard pure breeds. Thus, retro Pugs gained more popularity in recent years. The most notable difference can be seen in their snout. As a result of being mixed with Jack Terriers, retro Pugs have longer faces and less bulgy eyes. However, genetics is still a game of chances. In some cases, the gene of the Pug might still be stronger, resulting in a flat face and consequently suffering from the same health issues. They also have long ears that flop to the side instead of small, button ears. Another noticeable difference between these breeds is their coat color. While regular Pugs are often fawn or black in color, retro Pugs can be a bit darker and usually have more black markings on their face and along their backs. Instead of a short, glossy coat, they can also have a denser and rougher coat texture. In terms of build, purebred Pugs are short with barrel-like body structures. Retro Pugs, on the other hand, are generally thinner and have longer legs which are also ideal for holding up their body weight. Like their parents, the retro Pug is expected to be a small mixed breed. A retro Pug will fall somewhere between 9 and 15 inches in height and 13 and 18 pounds in weight once they reach maturity. Because of their small size, they are ideal pets for apartments and small houses. However, you need to be extra careful to avoid accidentally stepping on them, especially when they are still puppies. Standard Pugs stand between 9 and 12 inches in height and weigh anywhere from 14 to 18 pounds when they mature. On the other hand, Jack Russell Terriers grow between 10 and 15 inches tall and weigh around 13 to 17 pounds during adulthood. If you are considering a dog for the family, a retro Pug is just the perfect fit. They are intelligent, loyal, and loving dogs so they can easily adapt to a home setting. Once they get comfortable with each member of the family, they will start to become more protective of them. Although they are not aggressive dogs, they can show violent behavior when they feel that you are in a threatening situation. They need to be properly trained and socialized to know how to react to strangers and act in case of perceived danger. They may not be the most athletic dogs, but they are sure to be one of the most playful. They can suffer from separation anxiety if you leave them alone for some time. Having another dog or pet around can relieve this anxiousness. Depending on how you train them, they can grow up to be quiet and laid back or quite yappy dogs so you need to be assertive and prepared. As mixed breeds, retro Pugs are actually considered healthy dogs with a long life ahead of them. Their average lifespan falls between 13 and 16 years. However, even though they are less prone to have eye problems and breathing difficulties, retro Pugs suffer from health issues common to their parents. Here is a list of health conditions to look out for when owning a retro Pug: Allergies: When you notice that your retro Pug is frequently itching and suffering from skin lesions, then it might be because of skin allergies. While fleas are often the main culprit, they are also quite sensitive to pollen and dust mites. Intense itchiness can also be triggered by gluten and dairy products. Hip Dysplasia: This health problem refers to abnormal development of the joints that typically affects the hip and shoulder. If neglected, hip dysplasia can lead to arthritis which causes localized pain and decreased mobility. Skin Cancer: Skin lesions caused by allergies can also be a sign of skin cancer. Epilepsy: Jack Russell Terriers are known to experience seizure attacks when they are young so your retro Pug might inherit this brain disorder. Treatment for epilepsy involves a lifetime medication of anticonvulsants. This makes them more susceptible to tartar buildup, cavities, and gum disease. Regular visits to the veterinarian should also be done to detect any abnormalities or underlying health problems. There are many contradicting opinions about whether or not this should be performed. They have longer legs, floppy ears, and longer faces. Lowered risk of congenital diseases: While there is no concrete basis for this claim, many owners and breeders suggest that mixed breeds are less inclined to inherit congenital diseases associated with their purebred parents. Because of the ongoing advocacies for improving Pugs and other flat-faced breeds, retro Pugs have the possibility to be standard purebred dogs. Meanwhile, here are some noted disadvantages of producing this designer breed: Unpredictable size: While retro Pugs are assumed to be small dogs, there is no established breed standard for their height and weight. You might be shocked to have a larger dog than expected. Difficult to predict their temperament: While both Jack Russells and Pugs are smart and sociable dogs, it can be hard to tell if they will be energetic, loud barkers, or quiet observers which is the contradicting personality of both breeds. Higher price: As the interest in designer dogs increases, the price is only expected to go higher. Only a few breeders would be able to sell retro Pugs, which translates to a more premium price. Knowing the advantages and disadvantages of breeding a retro Pug can help you assess if this is the dog for you. You can better weigh the pros and cons before deciding to buy one. Owning a pup is a huge responsibility. Your actions will dictate if they will grow healthy and happy as they deserve. To give them an active life full of love and nourishment, you can follow some of the recommendations discussed in this section. Feeding and Diet Due to their size, retro Pugs are prone to being obese. To avoid gaining too much weight, replace fatty treats with vegetables and fruits. They may also be intolerant to certain foods. While kibble and other commercial dog food are good options, you can also try creating a meal plan that includes protein-rich meat like beef, chicken, turkey, and lamb. Cleaning and Grooming Retro Pugs are low maintenance dogs considering they have short, low-shedding coats. Brushing their fur once or twice a week is ideal for getting rid of loose and already fallen hair. Because of their sensitive skin, owners should limit their baths to once or twice a month. Look for any sign of skin allergies such as extreme itching and small wounds. Regular cleaning of the skin folds, eyes, ears, nostrils, and paws is also necessary to avoid any skin infections. To keep their nails short and manageable, clip them every six weeks. Dental hygiene is also a priority for retro Pugs. Brush their teeth once a week or provide them with dental chews so they flash their pearly whites and keep a fresh breath. While Pugs will gladly engage in physical activities, too much exercise can be damaging to their health. Your vet can give you a more specialized training plan to follow in keeping your retro Pug in shape. As intelligent dogs, you can easily begin socialization and housebreaking at a young age. However, they can get a little stubborn so you better carry an extra bag of patience. Retro Pugs with longer muzzles are usually priced a lot higher. Aside from buying from a breeder, you can also try your luck and adopt from a rescue or shelter. For an idea about the initial cost of owning a retro Pug, you can refer to the table below: Type of Expense. Their stocky build, smushed faces, huge eyes and curly tails are truly heart-warming to behold, but there are a few things you should know before you make your decision. Firstly, pugs and retro pugs are two different dog breeds. The origin of the retro pug breed As I mentioned in the introduction, retro pugs and traditional pugs are two different types. I will start with the origins of the older breed, i. The origins of the traditional pug go back hundreds, if not thousands of years to ancient China, where they were the beloved pets of the nobility and royalty. The long breeding resulted in the now familiar smushed face, which the ancient Chinese believed was very fashionable at the time. In the s, the breed was introduced to Europe and from there spread to the rest of the world. A classic pug The name retro pug, on the other hand, is very misleading, as this breed was first bred in the s by German dog breeders. To this day, the retro pug is not an official dog breed, only a designer breed, as the breed is an experiment. The original aim of the German breeders was to breed a more hardy, healthier breed than the traditional pug. For this reason, they experimented with several crosses until they finally arrived at the Jack Russell Terrier. Jack Russel Terrier Since retro pug is a designer breed, you never really know how exactly the puppies of crossing the pug and Jack Russell parents will look like. When breeding, the aim is to select individuals that inherit the longer nose of the Jack Russell Terrier, as this will prevent the respiratory diseases that are so common in pugs. Retro pug vs. Thanks to crossbreeding, the retro pug inherits several characteristics from the Jack Russell Terrier breed. The most striking difference is the size of the nose: while the traditional pug has a flat nose, the retro pug inherits the longer nose of the terrier. Some breeds, ones that never want to go for a run or fetch a ball, have this trait because they are physically unable to keep up with their canine cousins. One of the traits that sedentary pups have in common is often a flat face. History and Original Purpose The original Pug was a small dog with a substantial muzzle. But they have been selectively bred over the last century to achieve the flat-faced look they have now. Show guidelines for the breed suggest a flatter face being desirable, and this has really got out of control. The Jack Russell was designed for fitness and exercise, as expert ratters. They became family pets in more recent years due to their loving and loyal personalities, but have always been first and foremost a working farm dog. Retro Pug Appearance As a mixed breed, the appearance of the retro Pug can be quite unpredictable. Hybrid dogs can inherit any mixture of qualities from their parent breeds, which is part of the huge debate over mixed breeds vs pure breeds. You can read more about that debate here. Size The retro Pug will be a small mixed breed, as both of its parent breeds are similar sizes. Jack Russell Terriers will grow to between 10 and 15 inches tall. They will weigh between 13 and 17 pounds as a healthy adult. Pugs, on the other hand, are slightly smaller. They will grow between 9 and 12 inches tall, weighing 14 to 18 pounds as an adult. A mix of these two breeds will fall somewhere in the middle of these statistics. But, it is going to be a small breed. Face Shape Some retro Pugs will have flatter faces than others. This means, they can still suffer from the same health problems that brachycephaly causes. Not only does the mixed breed try to combat the short snout, it also tries to tackle the shallow eye sockets of brachycephalic dogs. Coat and Colors The best way to predict the color of your mixed breed is to take a look at its parents. Black and fawn are the main colors of the Pug breed. Whereas, the Jack Russell Terrier is mostly white, with black, brown, or tan markings. The amount of markings will vary from one Jack Russell to another. Pugs have a short, glossy coat. But Jack Russells have dense, double coats that are either smooth, broken, or rough. Take a look at the parents to predict what type of coat your Jack Russell Pug mix will inherit. Retro Pug Temperament This breed has a loving temperament. They are friendly with both children and adults, and generally fit in well in most homes. Their small size certainly helps! If your Boxer keeps jumping up to greet you, or your guests, you may be wondering if this is an inbred trait that's hard to train for, or if it is straight-forward to teach a Boxer to keep his paws on the floor. You'll be happy to know that you can indeed train your Boxer to stop jumping, all the while still allowing your dog to express himself. This section will cover puppies, adults, jumping on owners, and jumping up on visitors; all of which needs to be dealt with in slightly different ways. Why Boxer Dogs Jump Boxer dogs jump on people for one reason: to greet them. While some may just thump their tails on the ground, circle around a visitor, or give a quick lick, many Boxers are not naturally that reserved. This is a very outgoing, expressive breed. So, with many Boxers, a 'hello' is done in a huge way. In other words, your Boxer won't be like a neighbor with a lazy wave as you pass paths in the morning, but rather will be like your best friend who's thrown back a few brewskis and has no qualms to express how psyched they are to see you. The happier a Boxer is to see the target, the more enthusiastic the jump. So, it's common for a Boxer to jump up after being left home alone for a while, or when greeting someone whose company they really enjoy. Though those who are not ready for it or are not a physical match for a Boxer may stumble back, this is not the Boxer's intention. The goal is to be on a more equal physical level with a person, and bring their face up to theirs. After all, hellos are not done to someone's arm or leg. Some Boxer will lick, some will not. The main objective is to gain attention, receive attention back, and feel satisfied that it's abundantly clear that the Boxer is happy to see someone. If not, you will hold no perceived authority to give commands or be listened to. You may assume that your Boxer naturally knows that you are the leader. However, canines see the world differently than we do. Your Boxer has no idea what you went through to get him, doesn't understand that you own the house, and has no concept of money including how much of it you spend to take great care of him. So, before you try to teach your Boxer to stop jumping up, you'll need to make it exceedingly clear that you are the leader Alpha and deserve a level of respect that includes being listened to. How is this accomplished? By doing a few things that make sense in the canine world. Food speaks to dogs as no other element can; they instinctively know that it equals survival. So, whomever supplies the food is highly regarded and just this alone can put that person clearly into the leader role. You'll want your Boxer to obey a 'Sit' every single time before a meal is placed down or a snack is given. Once the sit is obeyed, wait for a count of .Entering and exiting. The leader has the privilege of entering and exiting the den house first. When you're heading out or in with your Boxer, command a 'Sit', cross the doorway, and then allow your Boxer to follow you. If you allow your Boxer to lead the way on walks, he may interpret this to mean that he can lead the way in other aspects. Maintain your authority by having your Boxer on leash and harness, and keep him to your immediate left. Training Treats Once your Boxer sees you as leader, he'll be much more prone to take your commands seriously; in fact, those with stubborn Boxers often see great improvement once this is established. However, in addition to that, any sort of training, including that for jumping up, will work faster if the Boxer has motivation. The bigger the benefits to listening, the faster a dog learns to choose the right course of action. So, training treats play a big role. The treats should not be something that is given out at any rate; they should be a special snack that is only handed out for good behavior. For training, moist usually works better than dry. And in addition, the treats should be relatively small; rewards need to offer immediate satisfaction and should not be something that a dog needs to sit down to chew on. A good choice for Boxer puppies is Wellness Puppy Bites Grain-Free Training Treats ; these are perfectly sized, high-quality, soft training treats that come in either lamb and salmon or chicken and carrots. Note: Rewards must be given within 1 or 2 seconds of a desired behavior, so you can't go searching for them. Have several of them in a plastic sandwich bag and in your pocket for quick, easy access. O, photo courtesy of Danielle The Goal for All Scenarios We'll cover several different types of situations in which a Boxer puppy or dog is jumping up, both in regard to age, and who the target is you or guests. For all of these, however, the goal will be the same. Boxers that do this are seeking attention. So, you'll be teaching your Boxer that jumping up does not bring about desired results, but that keeping all 4 paws on the ground does. How Long Training Takes If your Boxer only has an issue of jumping up on you, training can work as fast as a week. If your Boxer keeps jumping up on other people, such as visitors to your home, training takes a bit longer. Part of the reason for this is because you'll need to recruit a helper that is someone outside of the household. Since training may not be able to take place every day, it can take several weeks. How to Train a Boxer to Stop Jumping Up Scenario 1: Training a Boxer Puppy to Stop Jumping on You If your Boxer puppy has a habit of jumping up on you, consider yourself lucky; it's much easier to train a Boxer for jumping when the dog is small, and these lessons will be learned before your pup grows into a much larger adult. Be sure that everyone in the household is on the same page and reacting in the same way so that the lesson is quickly learned. When your Boxer pup first leaps up toward you, gently yet firmly hold his front paws, preventing him from touching your body. Do not release the paws until your Boxer shows signs that he wishes to be released. When the pup starts to withdraw, let the paws go, and allow him to place them on the ground. As soon as the paws hit the floor, offer enthusiastic praise, rub his head, and give lots of attention. But, do not offer a treat yet. If he tries to jump up on you again, repeat the steps of holding his paws, and only releasing once he wants to drop down. It can also technically work on regular visitors to the house who are willing to do this; though, we do suggest looking to scenario 3 ahead for that, since you'll want to instill certain aspects that include having your Boxer on leash and listening to your commands, and treats are given in a different way. The reason that the following training works, is because your Boxer is jumping up to greet you and wants his face to be close to yours. He also wants your attention. With this, he will get neither until his paws are down. As soon as you see your Boxer making a move to jump up on you, draw your arms up, crossing them over your chest, and turn your body so that at the most, your Boxer jumps to the back of your shoulder, and ideally your back. Do not speak at all, since your dog's attempt to gain your attention includes hearing your voice. Briskly, take few steps away, with your body still turned away from your Boxer. Your move may have caused your Boxer to drop down. If he shuffled along with you, he will soon tire and drop. When the paws touch the ground, turn and offer a super-happy greeting, along with pats. If your Boxer jumps up again, immediately react in the same way, of crossing your arms, turning, taking a few steps, and not speaking. As soon as he drops again, repeat the act of lavishing attention on him. When your Boxer has soaked in the attention, and you feel that he will not attempt another jump, immediately offer praise and a chosen training treat. Scenario 3: Training a Boxer Dog to Stop Jumping on Guests Of all the types of jumping behavior, this one is the most involved since training requires that you locate at least one willing helper, and it's common to not have an opportunity to train each day. The more often you train your Boxer, the faster he'll catch on. So, now's the time to call in a few favors, and see if you can get assistance from friends at least 3 to 4 times a week. Note that you can have just one certain person help you, but ideally you will want several different people to take turns doing this, so that your Boxer learns to greet without jumping with a variety of people. Ideally, these will be people that your Boxer has a history of jumping up on. If you really can't find anyone where do they all go when you need them? Together, you and your helper will teach your Boxer that the attention he craves will only be given when his paws stay on the ground. Treats will be used as a distraction to keep your Boxer down, and to reward good behavior. Have your Boxer on leash and harness. A harness allows you much better control, and is the safest way to restrain a dog from leaping. Hopefully, you already have a great harness for your Boxer, for his daily walks and other types of training. Standing inside the house approximately 10 feet from the entryway, and while firmly holding the leash, command a 'Sit'. Once your Boxer is sitting, give praise Good, sit, good dog , but do not give a treat. Have the leash on the floor, and use your foot to hold it in place. Be sure it has some slack, so that your Boxer can attempt to jump. After all, if he's not allowed to try, he can't learn to control it. If you find that you cannot keep the leash in place with your foot due to your Boxer's strength, you may switch to holding it in your hand, but do give it a bit of slack. Your guest will now enter. As your Boxer comes out of his 'sit' and moves forward, have your guest turn his back, and retreat several steps. Note that crossing the arms is not needed for this training, since your Boxer will not be close enough to touch your helper. Your helper must remain with his back turned to your Boxer and should not be speaking at all talking to you can be misinterpreted as speaking to your dog. Repeat the 'Sit' command. Once your Boxer sits this time, sprinkle 2 to 3 treats on the floor. This will help to keep him in place as he's tempted by your helper. Have your helper once again approach. Every time that your Boxer obeys the sit, your guest will continue his approach. And that sitting equals a hello. Any time that your Boxer stays still long enough that your visitor can walk all the way forward to physically touch your Boxer, have him say hello in a super-friendly manner and give lots of enthusiastic pats. After the controlled greeting has taken place, give praise and another reward treat. As we stated, the move you can practice this, the faster your Boxer will learn that sitting politely means that they get what they want.Tip: Don't let your Boxer be set up for failure. If he's not fully trained, don't allow a bunch of visitors to enter the house at once. Also, Boxers that are feeling antsy are much more likely to jump and otherwise physically express themselves. So, make sure that you're keeping your Boxer well-exercised via 2 strong walks per day to help your dog release any pent-up energy. Every single time that your Boxer moves forward, have your guest repeat the motion of turning and retreating. Did you find this article to be helpful? Baby steps 5 Important concepts to stopping any unwanted behavior The video that I have put together here of Aston includes some of the key concepts to stopping many unwanted behaviors. How to stop a boxer dog jumping up is the example here. The steps that I take could be applied to a whole range of issues. If you have a dog that is not behaving as you want then consider the following areas to get things turned around. Sounds obvious and yet this is one of the most common and most serious errors to make. Once a person lets their dog off the leash who does not listen then we may as well sit down and wait for them to come back. They are now out of your control and any shouting will simply stress everyone out. In this case the long line allows me to keep control of Aston whilst he is going through the training phase. Know your goal With Aston I had a very clear picture in my mind as to how I wanted him to behave. It was simple and clear and I kept my mind on it. Very often we enter a situation not knowing what we are really trying to achieve. Knowing what you are aiming for is a simple but crucial concept. Work with Nature, not against it A dog like Aston is always going to want to run and play ball so use that to your advantage. If you get him to understand that all he has to do is sit when you tell him, and then the ball is his, he will most likely accept this as a good agreement and do as you ask. If on the other hand you try to simply not ever let him have the ball you will be setting him up to fail, and he will no doubt try even harder to get it back off you. Calming your dog down In many situations dogs are simply too excited and in a state and need to calm down. When you do this in a calm manner you are taking control of your dog and projecting calm energy. Once they calm down you can carry on the training. It is simple but effective. Baby steps Often when I am working with owners they keep pushing their dogs more and more until the dog fails. Then they turn to me and ask what to do! This is where it is so important to understand the concept of baby steps. With Aston I only asked him to sit for a second before I threw the ball. I was setting him up to win. Had I waited for 10 seconds he would have no doubt jumped in my face and we would have gone backwards and missed a great opportunity. Get a few runs under your belt and set your dog up to win. By approaching training this way you make much quicker progress as you continually build on the previous learning rather than having to go back to basics because you have rushed it. I hope this brings you one step closer to the dog of your dreams. Looking for additional dog training resources? Have a puppy? Check out my Puppy Coach training program! Let me know how you get on!

Labradors Are a High Energy Breed The Labrador Retriever is a high energy working breed, initially bred for very physically demanding work retrieving game for hunters. This would involve all day hiking, running and swimming in sometimes difficult conditions. So Labrador Retrievers were bred to have lots of energy and be very active. And though their main role in life today is as a family pet, they still have those same genetics that made them suited to their original role. Dog Ball Thrower. Yes, you can throw a tennis ball extra far with the Chuckit, but two reasons why I love it: 1. In this state they will often resort to destructive behaviors such as digging and chewing…and will often be very restless, may bark excessively and try to escape your home and garden at every opportunity. Insufficient exercise can also lead to weight problems with Labradors. Excess weight is a problem because it can lead to all sorts of problems such as damage to their joints hips and elbows , heart disease, increased blood pressure and increases the risk of diabetes. So a lack of exercise leads to behavioral problems, hyperactivity and possibly an assortment of health problems. However, as a general rule of thumb, a normally healthy adult Labrador Retriever will need 1 hour of exercise every day. The more relaxed Labs just 45 minutes per day, the more energetic 1. This can be made up of running, swimming, playing fetch , jogging alongside you…anything that goes beyond a gentle walk. But if the first consideration is your Labradors age, how much do puppies and the elderly need? Nice for long runs with your Lab. If you have older dogs or children, the puppy may well try to keep up with them and over-exert themselves, playing to exhaustion and damage their developing joints. So keep an eye on them and interrupt play if need be, to give them plenty of rest. Once they are fully grown, they can go out for much longer. The 5 minute rule should be sufficient to keep your lab puppy fit, burn off excess energy yet not over-exert them and cause possible developmental issues. Continue the 5 minute rule until your puppy is at least one year of age where you can then begin to exercise them more vigorously. This is highly dependent on your labs overall health and can vary wildly from one Labrador to another. Some labs may need to slow down from the 7th year onwards, while others remain extremely active beyond their 10th year. As Labradors get older, many develop arthritis, dysplasia and other health issues that can prevent a Labrador from enjoying or needing exercise as much as they used to when young and healthy. They will likely still try to chase a tennis ball all day and hike mountains just to please you, even if it may be doing them more harm than good. Try not to put them in this position. As your Labrador ages, you need to be more observant , looking for changes in their movement, excessive panting, slowing down, feeling tired. And during grooming sessions and massage, check for any painful spots indicative of sore joints or other problems. We noticed Linus was stiff getting up in the morning and decided to try adding glucosamine to his diet. We saw a noticeable difference a few days later and an added spring in his step. If your Labrador tears around your home like a tornado. If your Lab displays any of the restless and destructive symptoms described above, try increasing their levels of exercise for a few days and see if their behavior problems improve. However, if you have money burning a hole in your pocket you might want to check out PetSafe Automatic Ball Launcher. Over-exercising very young and elderly Labradors can do more harm than good. For your adolescent and adult Labrador, exercise them well. As a general rule of thumb, aim for 1hr per day and scale this up or down depending on your Labradors individual needs. This could mean 45 mins for the more sedate and elderly, or 1. And at the end of the day, think of it like this: You have the best exercise machine to rival that of any gym to keep you fit and healthy yourself. And hey, what fun!!! What better motivation and need is there to keep yourself in shape? Do you mostly agree with the above? Please let us know in the comments section below. Helps ease anxiety in their new home. These tips will also help you to advance your dog so that, eventually, you can trust them to be off the leash in a safe area. Don't release your dog until they can demonstrate knowledge and obedience on the long leash and in many different settings. To begin with, walk them in the house and in the yard. Dogs learn 'contextually and by repetition'. These hints will help you to become the pack leader. Be certain that this is only reason that your dog will follow you. Make time to walk your dog Whether you walk your dog in the morning or evening will be influenced by your program. Whenever you exercise your dog, the walk should allow for 'focused time' and 'free time'. Two leashes will facilitate this. If they are under 12 months old, take some water with you. Also take a back-pack and a treat belt available on Ebay. I recommend no more than thirty minutes of walking in total for a dog under 14 months old as their growth plates are not set until this time. Be careful of overly vigorous activity, particularly if you have an older but playful dog. I don't recommend running for more than very short bursts for the same reason. Healthy hips and elbows are critical for a healthy, active and long life. Use two leashes - a long leash approx 7m and a short leash approx 1m Start your walk with the labrador pup on a short leash. The short leash will help you to direct and guide the dog. This allows you to maintain full control over your dog. Set up your walk for success. Start by getting the dog to sit or at the least be stationary and under your control. As you begin, keep your dog behind your body alignment. Be patient and encourage your dog. Do not show aggressive frustration. This will only cause confusion and fear or aggression. If your dog is not complying, stop and reset. You are the master Walking in front of your dog demonstrates that you are the master or the pack leader. You should be first out the door. The dogs should exit the compound only at your command. This is essential whether you are walking 1, 2 or more dogs. If your dog controls the pace and direction of the walk, they are the pack leader. Your dog should be beside or behind you during the walk. Dogs learn contextually The next two hints are important training essentials. Firstly, labradors learn contextually and their training in not immediately transferable to a new environment. Using the same disciplines and routines, train your dog the same way in different settings. This will entrench your expectations. Correct immediately Secondly, a labrador has about a five second retention of information. After five seconds the dog has lost any association between your assertiveness and their behaviour. If they disobey you, you must correct them within five seconds or not at all. If the dog is disobedient or simply does not understand, reset and start again. The long leash I'm a big fan of the long leash. A long leash will help you to correct bad behaviour at a distance. After a period of training with the short leash, remove it and connect the longer lead. Keep the leash in your hand, releasing it slowly and progressively. As they master this, you can back away while the dog is 'sitting and staying'. Reward your labrador pup with vigorous affection and a treat. After this, you should allow them to wander and sniff around. All this time you will keep your dog on the long leash and under your control. Be sure that the free time is less than their focus time. During the socialisation phase, 8 - 16 weeks, you will need both leashes as you expose your labrador pup to other dogs. As you walk your dog, you will come across small and large dogs that are aggressive. Walking on either leash will give your complete control. And it will ensure safety at all time. You new labrador pup has no innate road sense. Walk them, getting close to roads. Expose them to vehicles so that they do not panic. Reward your dog for good behaviour. Remember that dogs register tones and frequencies, not words. Use higher tones to affirm, reward and encourage. You approval is the greatest reward for a Labrador. Direct eye contact without high vocal affirmation will be interpreted as aggression. Use lower growling tones to reinforce disapproval. Try to avoid 'No' as a command. It is too general and therefore confusing to the dog. Always reward and reinforce obedience to specific commands. Use food treats to begin with, however you must gradually phase them out. Your vocal affirmation and affection should be your longer term goal. As your dog maintains the proper behaviour, reward them with treats. Reward your dog after the walk I recommend that you reward your labrador pup after the walk. Let them have a drink firstly then give them a portion of food that is less than a meal but more than a treat. It will not take long for your dog to anticipate the whole experience. When you appear with the leashes, they will become very enthusiastic. If you adhere to these eight hints and maintain the discipline of your training, you and your dog will value and enjoy the experience. Finally, remember to pick up after your dog. Don't go on a walk without your poop bags on hand! Find a vet you can have confidence in. Pawling Chocolate and Black Labradors. Just like us, Labradors need plenty of exercise on a daily basis. Whether you have a young or old dog, they all need to get the blood flowing to stay healthy and live long happy doggie lives. Regular exercise with your Labrador is very beneficial for you both. Exercise stimulates neuron growth in the brain, encourages the production of endorphins with a known mood-boosting effect , helps strengthen your bones and muscles, improves blood pressure, and can significantly help with depression. Are you having a hard time figuring out how much exercise your lab needs? Answers vary drastically from one dog to another. The amount of exercise to give your Labrador depends mostly on the age of the dog. The key to taking your Labrador puppy out for exercise is to be patient. Some labs are athletic, and thus need more exercise than others. Also, certain Labradors are genetically programmed to be energetic and have high metabolism rates, whereas others are more laid-back. Here are some exercise guidelines a new lab owner can follow to make sure their dog gets the right workout. With older dogs or children, a lab puppy may well try to keep up with them and exhaust themselves before they reach their adult size and stamina. Hold off on structured games and other forms of heavy physical activity for the first three months. This will set the stage for long-term, healthy exercise habits. This rule states that you should take your Labrador puppy out for at least five minutes of exercise per month of age up to twice a day until he or she is fully grown. This can be anything from a walk around the block to a run in the dog park. How old your dog is will make a difference in their stamina. To determine how much exercise your dog needs, first take their age into consideration. Labs that are four years old and above need between one and two hours of exercise per day. The truth is Labradors can lead a perfectly healthy life with just an hour of daily active playtime. The Labrador Retriever was bred to retrieve game for hunters. That means they naturally love to play fetch. All you need is a toy for playtime and room for running around. Tug-of-War is less cardio-oriented but helps with muscle mass and body structure in growing dogs. Plus, they love it! It requires that you prepare your puppy with a proper agility training course. Agility training is great for completing a total-body, structured workout, while also providing mental stimulation for your labrador. This involves activities such as going through walkways, tunnels, and hurdles to reach the other end. You will need to train your lab to engage in the activity and this involves proper instruction. Find one that fits his size and abilities, as well as your own personal comfort level. Either due to space or having a small yard, it may be difficult to get their puppies out every day. The good news is that, with a little creativity, indoor exercise can be just as viable and fun! Here are a few ideas you can try at home. Try Treadmill Training Sessions With Dogs A dog can be trained to use a treadmill and enjoy it, but the experience will take time. Build an Obstacle Course for Your Labrador Use everyday things found around the home or office to create an obstacle course. It also boosts their energy levels and problem-solving skills. For example, you might use old boxes and trash bags to make a tunnel, chairs or stools to jump across, and other furniture for your puppy to climb. At first your puppy may not catch on, but with effective use of the treat and lots of encouragement, you can help it learn as it goes. Hide-and-Seek With a Treat! Hide a treat around the house, and let your puppy work to find it. As you hide treats around the room, remember to make sure they are not hiding somewhere that is unreachable. Tip 2. Make sure that all the activities are not just what you enjoy but what is enjoyable for the puppy. Otherwise, they may get frustrated and stop cooperating with you. Include treats and praise whenever they accomplish something. All dog breeds respond positively to lots of physical affection and verbal affirmation. This will make the activity more enjoyable for the puppy. Keep fun as the central theme and good health will flow. Tip 3. Make an Exercise Routine and Schedule for Your Dog Lab owners, take note: maintaining the health of an adult Lab is all about consistency. And this starts with walks at a young age. Take regular walks with your dog, no matter the weather conditions. Walk at the same time each day in order to create an exercise pattern that both you and your dog can stick to. Maybe you can get the puppy used to a leash and casually walk through your neighborhood with it. That way, you can vary the activity occasionally. In six months, increase the amount of time your dogs are running to 15 minutes. This keeps their energy high and stops weight gain as they mature. Conclusion As a dog owner, your foremost responsibility is protecting the health and safety of your pet. Insufficient exercise causes health problems in dogs , like hip dysplasia especially those already prone to hip or joint problems. Share on. Tweet on Twitter Puppy exercise requirements vary between different types of dog, and as a puppy grows the exercise they need will increase. It is possible to give a puppy too much exercise so I will give you a puppy exercise chart, as a guide to how far a puppy can walk at different ages. Taking your new puppy for a walk We all look forward to the day we can take our new puppy for a walk. For many people, daily dog walks is a huge part of why they bought a Labrador in the first place. Others already take quite small puppies for quite long walks and are surprised to discover that many experts believe this to be a bad thing. So just how much exercise does a puppy really need? How much exercise does a puppy need? This rule of thumb says that a puppy should have no more than five minutes of walking for every month of his age. So that would be fifteen minutes a day maximum for a three month old puppy, twenty minutes for a four month old and so on. This concern about excessive exercise has arisen because it is widely believed that exercise is a factor in the development of serious joint disorders. Especially in larger breed puppies such as Labradors Breeders are particularly concerned about hip dysplasia, a serious and complex disorder of the hip joints, that is believed to be influenced both by inherited factors passed from dogs to their puppies and by environmental factors In addition to factors influencing growth rates, the stresses and strains placed on the vulnerable growing joint by excessive exercise are believed to be a contributory environmental factor in the development of inadequate hip joints. It seems likely, that a puppy that had inherited a tendency for poor hips, could have its soft and still forming hip joints made a good deal worse through prolonged or hard exercise. It is also possible that a puppy that has inherited excellent hips, will come to no harm whatsoever through hard exercise. On the contrary, a certain amount of free running exercise is a good thing Running off-leash A Norwegian study published and which included labradors, showed that puppies given the opportunity to exercise off leash in a park before the age of three months were less likely to develop hip dysplasia HD , not more. Stair climbing The same study showed that puppies that had to climb stairs on a regular basis during the same period were at increased risk of HD You can read about this study in Science Daily. So what does this study tell us? Well, it is only one study, but it suggests that playing in a natural way, with other pups or simply running about at their own speed is probably going to benefit a small puppy Strenuous exercise Whereas more strenuous activity such as climbing hills and stairs, may not be such a good thing at a very young age. Another study has suggested that running hard for a retrieve, may not be great for joint health either. And some breeders also prevent dogs from jumping for the first twelve months to reduce impact on the shoulder and elbow joints. This may be especially important for some of the heavier breeds of dog, and those that are slow to mature. How far should my puppy walk? But how does that translate to distances walked? If you like to think in distances rather than time, a mile is around steps for an adult human and takes about twenty minutes at a moderate walking speed. So a maximum walk for a four month old Labrador might be about a mile. And of course if you are walking out and back again, that means not taking the dog more than half a mile from your home or car, whichever is your starting point. With young puppies, you need to keep a balance. Think about the overall energy your puppy is expending rather than focusing on walking alone. Walking is only one form of exercise and is no more valuable or important than games or training exercises. If you have been to visit a friend with your five month old pup and their dog has played for half an hour in the garden with yours, your dog does not need a walk as well. It is the total exercise that counts. How much exercise is too much? And you are bound to know of someone whose puppy had far more exercise than this and came to no harm. However taking a puppy for long walks or asking him to negotiate very steep or uneven surfaces when he is little, is probably a bad idea. Beware of letting a puppy play for too long with an older dog that does not want to stop. And keep an eye on children who may inadvertently exhaust a puppy by encouraging him to play when he needs to sleep. Crating your puppy when he is tired or overexcited, will enable you to make sure that your puppy gets some well deserved down time. Summary Young puppies need the time and space to run about freely, and free running exercise is beneficial. You do not need to attempt to prevent puppies playing in the garden, trotting about the house or playing with another young puppy for a while. Provided that the puppy is free to stop and rest whenever he wants. As far as we know at the moment, formal exercise — walking on a lead — for example, is probably best restricted using the five minute rule as an approximate guide. And strenuous exercise such as stair climbing, and chasing balls should be limited or avoided altogether in puppies under three months of age. Remember, an adult dog can become an amazing athlete, but like all athletes, fitness and stamina are best built up in gentle stages if injury is to be avoided.
