I was particularly concerned with breathing issues that these dogs so often has, and Deb was able to answer all of these questions with with ease and details since she has a deep experience in breeding Frenchies, and loves to do it. She has a fantastic working knowledge of genetics, and tracks her dogs health so well that she can use this data to produce great litters. Her process is impressive. I fully expected to have to wait up at least 6 months for a puppy, but we were able to get a puppy sooner than that. We got Millie, a beautiful Fawn with tons of red accents. She is smaller in size, just as we like, and Deb told us that with her intensity gene, that her coloring was going to be stunning. She was absolutely right. I had such an experience and within these pages of this portion of my website I will present to you those dogs and bitches, those kennels, who set the stage for what I wanted for my breeding program as well as where I wanted to take Quapaw. When I do not have a picture to share I will tell the short story of the dog that is ever present in my mind. The most difficult part of this journey is where to begin. This want eventually led to RoseAnn Parke of Parkewood Kennels near Indianapolis, IN through a youngster she bred who came to my college psyche class one day with her owner. This meeting brought into my life my first and third Goldens: Copper Shane of Parkewood and my foundation dam, Ch. Their males who influenced my thinking and breeding were: Eng. CH Camrose Cabus Christopher. The bitch that has had the most direct influence has been Eng. CH Westley Victoria. I have always loved the bitches produced by Susan Brown-Leger and Synergold. Some people like to try to categorize my breeding program but if they took the time to look deep enough they would see what I see, all of the above named breeders and dogs have one very important thing in common: the Standard for the breed. These dogs and bitches, in my honest opinion, are some of the best representatives of the Golden Retriever standard no matter which side of the Pond they resided. So many people today seem to be blinded by color in this breed as well as which side of the Pond, when in fact they should be open minded and see the standard that is represented and be breeding to it and not worry about where the dog comes from, but what the dogs have to offer them and most importantly, the breed. On the following pages of this section you will find photos of these dogs and either their pedigrees or links to their pedigrees, as well as some others that are related and I would hope that once you start looking at them closely you will see what I have witnessed all these many years and that is the similarity of type and structure. Right: Reserve BIS Blackpool Ch Show Toffer was a born showman, and just loved being in the ring, but he had one habit, which I found most embarrassing, in that he would insist in either carrying his leash or the sleeve of my anorak! A natural worker, he was a joy to have on a shoot, as he would never tire, face any cover, and had a wonderful nose. However things changed after she had her first litter, when she really began to look like a Golden, for suddenly she developed a beautiful wavy coat with masses of feathering! Looking at photos of her when she was quite old one can see her very intense waves. However she soon recovered and was able to win the C. That taught me a lesson, never to wear a hat with a brim when judging — at that time we all wore hats for those occasions! He was a very mature youngster, as his puppy photo at10 months shows. He had aprofuse coat, very good construction both ends, and was a super mover, so took the All Rounders eye. After his Junior days, he went through a very teenage stage and was very immature for quite a long time, and took quite a long time to come to his prime. I loved his head which had a super eye and expression — which was much better than that of his sire Christopher. In Best of Show rings she could not stand next to a Bobtail or one similarly coated or she would not show. Memories of some of the early post-war dogs One of the first famous dogs I remember seeing in the ring was Ch. Torrdale Happy Lad — a very glamorous, heavily built extrovert cream dog — beautifully handled by Mr Fred Parsons. One of the first famous dogs I remember seeing in the ring was Ch. The next which impressed me for his type was Ch Dorcas Glorious of Slat his closeness in relationship to my own Tess, was that her dam was his litter sister. He was a compact, wavy coated dog with a lovely head. I must have watched the bitches too, but do not remember them, I suppose because by that time, I had decided I wanted a litter from Tess, so was more interested in selecting a mate for her. Weyland Varley was a really beautiful, masculine dog, with a lovely head and super construction both ends. I awarded him Best of Breed at the first Championship show I judged. He had a lovely temperament and I remember happy days out with his owner, Mrs Morgan, when she was helping me to train my dogs for their Qualifying Certificates Ch. Alresford Advertiser always looked immaculate and was a great showman. A beautifully pale coated dog, of good size, well-made, and an impressive mover. Needless to say Advertiser usually won over my dogs!! However I still awarded him a CC at one of the Birmingham shows. He had super happy temperament and was a dog one liked to stand next to in the ring, as so many at that time were not too pleasant and would growl at other dogs. He had a strong skull, but was rather short in foreface for true balance of head. He was not a big dog, but was very compact and had super hindquarters, a lovely pale coat and was very glamorous. He was a good sized dog — very pale coloured — and with lots of substance and bone. I was the first person from the south of England to use this dog — to improve my hindquarters — and he produced a litter for me with 3 Champions in it, which had his rear end but retained my very good fronts! Camrose Nicholas of Westley was a cream dog of lovely type and character. I remember taking his sire Ch. William of Westley to a show in Blackpool for Joan who was in hospital at the time , and having a nightmare journey with him. He was a very energetic dog and would not keep still in the train overnight, and when walking to the show drove me mad, as he insisted on lifting his leg at every corner, tree or lamppost we came to! Later Miss Gill returned the compliment for me by taking Ch. As a couple, Trish's love for these breeds rubbed off on Dale, and after struggling with infertility, they decided to take a break and welcome their first boy, Lucky, into their lives. They cherish the company of children and are quite comfortable with other animals and pets, especially if you have trained them to grow up together. These dogs are fond of people and love to be around them, and hence, it is tough for them to cope with solitude. They need the company of the owners, and in return, expect their care and attention. With all these graces and goodness, they are perfect for first-time dog owners. This large breed is comfortable living in apartments, provided you help them meet their regular exercise needs. Care Exercise These active dogs have a high level of energy, which they can burn down by sufficient amount of exercise. They also love swimming. But be present with them when they do. Take your GL out for a long brisk walk or a jog at least once a day, for a minimum of 30 min. This should not merely keep it mentally sound and physically fit, but would also strengthen the bond between you and your companion dog. Your dog would also appreciate if you indulge it in some everyday games. If you have an open yard, it can simply roam around freely, which should also add to its fitness activities. If your dog has already started losing hair, we recommend that, you brush it daily. Otherwise, only a weekly session sounds good. This should remove all its dead and loose hairs. To avoid ear infections, do not forget to rinse the inside of their ears when they come out of the water. Also, take care of their teeth by brushing them every week to keep away possible plaque buildups. Because of their hefty built and other associated genetic factors, they are prone to a few issues like elbow and hip dysplasias, PRA Progressive Retinal Atrophy , diabetes, cataracts, and certain skin conditions that are especially prevalent amongst yellow labs including allergies, hotspots, dry skin, sun burns etc. Train it to socialize from a very young age, right after adoption. Let them know people and mingle with your children and other pets at home, and practice obedience. This should work. They would grow up to a happy dog without much anxiety and concern of its surroundings. Teach them tricks like retrieving, and enthuse them in agility games like flyball, Frisbee, etc. Do take the lead and let your dog follow you. But insist on sober and gentle training methods. Praise them as they succeed, give them treats, toys and gifts. However, if you choose dry dog foods, do stick to high-quality foods only, and those that are meant for the dogs of its size and energy. I have taught him how to sit, lie down, play dead, shake hands, jump, come here and stay. Right now I am teaching him to play piano. He is very pure. I bought him from an Army dog breeder. She has a UKC limited privilege number, and competes in obedience. She has many admirable qualities—anywhere from her intent focus or her incredible working attitude. She does agility as well, though in actual competition she is only allowed to do tunnelers with NADAC, because of her missing leg. It is a real shame that she is considered "lame," and is not allowed to do hunting retriever trials, because she would excel in them for sure. She is an excellent retriever, is very soft mouthed and marks very well. She can do what any other dog can do, with only her three legs. She's got true heart and soul, and is extremely intelligent. He can catch a football, crunch up a soup bone or swallow a sock or a toy, so be sure to pick up the laundry and toys! Poorly socialized, carelessly trained dogs are a high risk liability LIKELY to bite strangers in an effort to control them by forced herding and attack.
