If they take after the Poogle side of the family their coat will be their most distinguishing characteristic. Coat colors found in this breed range from black to apricot, cafe-au-lait to white. Bathing and clipping of the coat need to be done about every four to six weeks. Grooming Your Poogle Grooming requirements for Beagle Poodle mix puppies depend on the coat they inherit. Dogs with longer coats will need daily brushing, while dogs with a medium coat may only need a touch-up every couple of weeks. Close clipping long-coated dogs will minimize grooming time. One appealing quality Poogles get from their Poodle parent is their low-shedding coat. Are Poogles Hypoallergenic? Poodles have long been hailed as hypoallergenic dogs, since their hair grows for a longer time and is shed less frequently. People with dog allergies may be able to tolerate a Poogle in the home better than some other breeds. However, this will depend on which parent the Poogle takes after. All Poogles need daily toothbrushing and monthly nail trimming to maintain long-term good health. Poogle Temperament Poogle dogs are intelligent and friendly, making them perfect for families. They have a moderate to high energy level. Plan on providing some form of exercise for your Poogle on a daily basis for at least 30 minutes. The hunting instincts of the Beagle may be expressed by chasing smaller household pets, but they seem to get along well with everyone when properly socialized. Although not known for excessive barking, this breed can make a fine watchdog. As with physical characteristics, a Poogle can be a mix of the two parents or take after one more than the other. Poodle Personality When it comes to personality, Poodles are famous for their keen intelligence and capacity for learning. These traits along with good looks make it a favorite circus and show dog. Miniature Poodles have a moderate energy level and many love swimming and retrieving. Beagle Personality The personality of Beagles is one of merriment and curiosity. Bred for hunting, they thrive on exercise but are still easy-going enough to make a perfect family dog. They are intelligent animals with an excellent sense of smell. They may become distracted by their single-minded focus on scent tracking. Exercising your Poogle Poogles are active dogs who need regular exercise. With his intelligent and curious nature, your Poogle will appreciate mental as well as physical exercise. This breed may not be ideal for folks who need to be away from home for 8—10 hours a day. If you can make time for a daily walk and some puzzle games, your Poogle will thrive. Poogle Health Concerns Poogles may be affected by diseases common to its parent breeds. Diseases affecting Poodles include hyperadrenocorticism, eye diseases, epilepsy, hypothyroidism, and patellar luxation. The National Beagle Club of America reports Beagles to have a predilection for eye disorders, hypothyroidism, epilepsy, and luxating patellas. Combining the lists from each breed, Poogles might be prone to having eye disorders, luxating patellas, epilepsy, hyperadrenocorticism, and hypothyroidism. Be sure to ask about testing history before you decide on buying a pup from any breeder. Are Designer Dogs Healthy? The term mixed-breed or mutt implies a combination of many different breeds and crossbreeds, making the results very unpredictable. Designer dogs are created from a mating of two purebreds. Their offspring have predictable traits that are some combination of those seen in the parents. A favorable aspect of so-called designer dogs is that the weaker traits of each breed involved are less likely to occur in the offspring. The mixing of two gene pools allows for more hybrid vigor. The bottom line is that whether you call them designer dogs or hybrids, the Poogle dog combines the genetics of two breeds. You may be able to find Poogle puppies in a web search, but be careful buying from breeders who are far away from where you live. Shipping young puppies can be very stressful for them. You may be able to find local Poogle breeders online. Many breeders vaccinate puppies themselves. If they give an improperly stored vaccine or if the timing is off, these shots might not be effective at preventing deadly diseases like parvo and distemper. This will help screen out pups who have a major congenital problem or those who are not adequately protected from common infectious diseases. The breeder should be able to show you records from the vet visit. Do you have your eye on a Poogle? Tell us what you like about the designer dog in the comments below! Greco, D. Barnett, KC. Poogles are small to medium-sized dogs with the combined smarts and high trainability of the Beagle and the hypoallergenic Poodle. There is no doubt that the Poogle is going to be a very popular designer breed in the years to come. If you decide that a Poogle is a right choice for your home, then read on, we have all the information you need about this adorable breed! What is a Poogle? Also known as Beaglepoos, Beagledoodles, or Beapoos, Poogles are loving and loyal designer dogs that have a ton of confidence. To understand more about Poogles, let us take a brief look at their parent dog breeds. Beagles The Beagle dog breed needs no introduction. It is easily one of the most popular dog breeds in the world today. As hunting companions, their skills are par excellence. They are scent hounds gifted with an incredible sense of smell which helps them in tracking. As family dogs, Beagles are loyal, affectionate, and just the right size. Poodles The Poodle dog breed has consistently ranked No. Exceptionally smart and active, these dogs were bred to retrieve things from the water. The small-sized Poodles were used for truffle hunting. Origin of the Poogle Poodle mix breeds like Poogles are nothing new. From the dawn of canine history, intact males and females have met and created a new breed in the process. In the late s, a few dog breeders acted according to the needs of future dog owners. People wanted dogs but some had limitations due to pet allergies. The Poogle was one such creation. We cannot say for sure exactly when the first Poogle was created but assume it must have been around the s. Like all other designer dogs hybrid dogs , the Australian National Kennel Council does not recognize the Poogle breed. Exactly how big a Beagle-Doodle puppy will get depends on the size of the Poodle parent. Most dog breeders use standard or miniature-sized Poodles for mating with a Beagle. This is due to the comparable sizes of the two breeds. Most Beagle Doodles grow to a height of inches 28 to 38 cm and weigh between lb. Your Poogle puppy can be considered a fully-grown adult at 18 months. Since there is no standardisation for mixed breed dogs, you could have many variations in the appearance of the Poogle breed. For example, some Poogles inherit the curly low-shedding coat of the Poodle parent while others may have the short and thick coat of the Beagle parent. Are Poogles Hypoallergenic? This is one of the most frequently asked questions people have about Poogles. Unfortunately, there is no definite answer for it since it all depends on complex canine genetics. Therefore, your F1- Poogle could or could not be hypoallergenic. Most first-generation poodle mix breeds that have a short coated breed as one of their parents such as a Beagle, Dachshund, Labrador etc will inherit a wire texture coat, that is low shedding. In case you or a family member is allergic to dogs, you might want to ensure that your breeder gives you an F1-B Poogle puppy. Do Poogle Dogs Shed? All dogs shed — some more than others. However, Beagles shed a lot all year round and a Poogle that inherits the Beagle-like thick and short coat might shed as well. In any case, you can expect your Beagle-Poodle mix to be extremely smart and highly trainable. Before bringing home your Poogle, you need to be aware that these dogs tend to be highly excitable. You will need to train your puppy to enjoy spending periods of time in calmness by teaching it some obedience commands and providing passive calming activities like stuffed Kongs. While this nature may be great to have around children, it is very important to teach both — the kids and your Poogle — about the proper way to behave around each other. As such, very young babies or toddlers should not be allowed to interact with a fully-grown Poogle without supervision. In general, though, the Poogle makes an excellent family companion pet. With proper training, your Poogle will bring a lot of fun, laughter, and love into your household. Poogles are also ideal companions for active individuals, couples, and even elderly people. However, they do need plenty of daily activity and mental stimulation to prevent them from getting bored and destructive. Stuffed Kongs, licky mats, snuffle mats, food puzzles, long-lasting chews and raw meaty bones should all be on your puppy shopping list. Are Poogles Smart? Poogles are incredibly smart like their parent dog breeds. This makes them easy to train and also a good choice for first-time dog owners. These highly intelligent designer dogs use their sense of scent and can be great as hunting companions. They are also known for superior adaptive intelligence like both the parent dog breeds. How Do You Train a Poogle? The best way to train a Poogle is with consistency, patience, and love. Set aside minutes daily for the training. Begin and end every session with some playtime, praise, and cuddles. Keep the sessions short 5 minutes per session and use high-value treats to get your Poogle to do what you want it to do. Crate training is recommended for Poogle puppies and adults to prevent them from developing separation anxiety. Separation anxiety is a common behaviour problem among poodle mix designer dog breeds. Crate training is not cruel, in fact, getting your poodle mix breed comfortable with spending time alone in a crate is vital for their wellbeing. There will be times when your dog might need to be caged for brief periods of time such as for vet visits, interstate or overseas flights, boarding, to prevent jumping on guests etc. Furthermore, growing your beagle mixes skills of independence, confidence and optimism are important and necessary life skills. If needed, enrol your dog in puppy preschool, hire a private dog trainer, or send your puppy to a board-and-train facility. Do Beagle-Poodles Bark a Lot? Like their Beagle parent, Poogles do tend to bark. Not all kinds of barking are bad your Poogle might bark to warn you about danger! This is important if you live in an apartment or have neighbours close by. Poogles are relatively rare in the United States and Australia. Therefore, you might not find too many breeders having Poodle Beagle mix puppies on sale. Breeders will charge according to the effort they have put into their breeding program. For example, the best breeders conduct health checks and genetic tests on their breeding dogs. This costs money but ensures healthier puppies. What to Feed a Poogle? Later, your vet nutritionist can recommend the best food for your dog. Make any dietary changes very slowly to prevent gastric issues in your young dog. A diet that includes raw meaty bones is generally better for Poogles as it could help prevent tooth decay to some extent. As dogs grow older, they might prefer soft or wet food over kibble. Wet food is easier on their teeth and also can be more satisfying due to its higher moisture content. Always look for food having the first ingredient as meat. Some dog foods are packed with cereals or grains and vegetables instead of meat. It is best to avoid such foods since dogs, although omnivores, still need meat for protein. Poogles are usually healthy eaters. Sometimes, they might act as if every food is their favourite. Also, Poogles are prone to obesity, so you might want to avoid free-feeding. What are the Common Health Issues in Them? Some Poogles are known to inherit the health issues seen in the parent dog breeds: hip and elbow dysplasia, PRA or progressive retinal atrophy and other eye problems, epilepsy, dental disease, obesity, and back problems. Beagle-Poodle mixes purchased from reputable breeders are generally hardy dogs and, with proper care, could live for nearly years. View fullsize Both our chocolate Labradoodle and our Poodle are beautiful dogs with excellent temperaments. They are our family pets. Because we begin with a Labradoodle and a Poodle, rather than a Lab and a Poodle, our puppies are much more likely to have the non-shedding Poodle coat. A F1b Labradoodle has been back-crossed to a poodle in an effort to insure a non-shedding coat. Even though most f1b Labradoodles shed very little or not all, it is impossible to guarantee that any dog even doodles or purebred poodles will not shed at all. Hypo- means less hypothermia is having a lower than normal body temperature. No dog can be said to be completely non-allergenic. Studies have shown that doodles are less likely to cause allergies, particularly f1b doodles. The ideal is to keep as much of the Lab head shape and super-friendly personality as possible while getting the non-shedding Poodle coat as well as the dignified, less vocal characteristics of the Poodle. Our Labradoodle methodology is quite simple. First, we get quality dogs. This is why we wanted to have pick of the litter for our Labradoodle and our Poodle and why we only obtained puppies from reputable breeders that we knew we could trust. Second, we try to treat our dogs Labradoodle and Poodle well. We feed our Labradoodle and Poodle high quality food with plenty of protein, and give them wonderful socialization and opportunities for exercise. We have 12 acres along the Enoree River with trails, additional property next to a Greenville state park, and property on Lake Hartwell giving us the opportunity to take the dogs kayaking. We recognize the importance of socializing young Labradoodle puppies so they will not be fearful as they mature. Our Labradoodle puppies have lots of opportunities to play with our children, and water games are definitely on top of the list. Labradoodles love the water and so do my kids, as you can see below. Third, we try to find appropriate families for our Chocolate Labradoodle puppies. To learn more about our process, check out this resource that gives a step-by-step guide between the application to receiving your puppy! A Chocolate Labradoodle or mini Labradoodle is not for everyone, and a puppy is not for everyone. If your family is not prepared for a Labradoodle puppy financially, time investment, etc. When can you get your puppy? Because we have only one Labradoodle mother and a couple guardian homes , puppies are available only occasionally. Contact us nathan crockettdoodles. We have a flexible waiting list and offer your deposit back if we do not have the ideal Labradoodle puppy for you within a certain window of time. Sometimes with mini Labradoodles we prefer to wait until they are a little older than 8 weeks because accidents tend to happen more easily with really small puppies. We will take several pictures of you with your Labradoodle puppy. We will send you the pictures for free place them on a USB thumb drive for you , and you will have full copyright privileges to all of the pictures to use at your discretion. You have the option of whether or not the photos appear here on the ChocolateLabradoodlePuppies. Although we never ship puppies, we will sometimes personally deliver puppies for a reasonable fee. Why should you consider getting a Chocolate Labradoodle from us? If a Labradoodle or mini Labradoodle puppy is right for your family, and if you are within driving distance of Greenville, SC, you may want to consider getting a chocolate Labradoodle or mini Labradoodle from us. If you read our Labradoodle puppy methodology and like what you read, you should consider adopting one of our puppies. We have a three-year health guarantee on each of our puppies if the forever home continues to feed TLC one year health guarantee on all others. How can you get a Chocolate Labradoodle or Labradoodle mini from us? If you think your family would be a good match for one of our Labradoodle or mini Labradoodle puppies, then start the conversation by emailing us at nathan crockettdoodles. You will have full access to all pictures and hold the copyright to make as many pictures as you desire. You keep all the pictures. We give your Labradoodle or mini Labradoodle puppy a quality collar. We give your Labradoodle or mini Labradoodle puppy a quality leash. We give you a bag of high quality dog food. We believe that you should give your new Labradoodle puppy or mini Labradoodle puppy the best food. Instructional materials about crate training and house training. Our goal is to do everything we can to assist in the house training and crate training process. A Labradoodle or mini Labradoodle puppy or any puppy cannot be completely reliable in the house until the puppy is about 6 months old. The simple point is that no matter what some breeders tell you you will be partially involved in the house training process unless you buy an older Labradoodle or mini Labradoodle , but we want to help you with that process. A one-year health guarantee; extended to three years for all who continue to feed TLC. We are concerned with finding really good homes for our Labradoodle and mini Labradoodle puppies. Labradoodle Color To see a list of available colors, check out this page. At ChocolateLabradoodlePuppies. Ultimately we cannot completely control the color of puppies. Even though chocolate is the most desirable color, we sometimes have puppies of other colors even occasional merles. These puppies, will of course, also make excellent pets. These non-chocolate Labradoodle puppies are also available to great families, but we know that Chocolate Labradoodles are the most desirable. The Labrador Retriever has a short coat that sheds. By breeding the F1 Labradoodle back to an unrelated Poodle, the chances of getting the highly desirable non-shedding Poodle coat increase exponentially. Some F1B Labradoodles are bred back another time to a Poodle in an effort to guarantee a Poodle coat. If high quality dogs are chosen to breed that have the head shape of a Labrador Retriever it is possible to get a puppy that is very similar in many ways to a Labrador, but has the beautiful non-shedding Poodle coat. Both Labrador Retrievers and Poodles are highly intelligent dogs, helping Labradoodles excel in smarts, train-ability, and a general desire to always please their owner. If you desire a family-friendly, kid loving, medium energy dog that is comfortable inside or outside, that loves the water and the land, you should definitely consider a Labradoodle or mini Labradoodle. For more info about Labradoodle puppies or mini Labradoodle puppies, please email nathan crockettdoodles. Check out our sister site miniLabradoodlePuppies. We specialize in Chocolate Labradoodles and mini Labradoodles, but often we have other colors as well. Occasionally someone travels from Atlanta, Columbia, Raleigh-Durham or Knoxville, but our proximity to North Carolina and the popularity of Labradoodles in North Carolina make Charlotte and Asheville our most serviced locations. We also have some who are interested from distant states, but we primarily serve the Southeast U. Apply for your labradoodle puppy today! I want to see the puppies available! Having a French Bulldog will bring infinite joy and laughter to your life almost everyday. Frenchie owners will agree there are countless ways their little faces and attitudes brighten up your life, sometimes in unexpected ways. All French Bulldogs are loving companions that require significant human interaction to thrive, so be prepared, this is not a set and forget dog. They NEED to be one of the family and should not regularly be left alone for long periods. Frenchies are perfect for small living spaces but they need to be temperature controlled i. In the winter months they should not be left out in the cold for long so …. French Bulldogs are great security guards and will alert you to strangers. The incessant non-stop barking for zero reason you see in some small breeds is rare for a Frenchie, this makes for a lot less complaints from any nosey neighbours especially in condos or apartments. For example, a well exercised pup tends to be a non shoe chewing pup which can be quite a valuable trait according to where you shop lol. From the moment they open their eyes Frenchies have very identifiable personalities, each with their own quirks and expressions that develop well into their adult lives. This can be said of most dogs, but the French Bulldog is a unique experience and once you share your life with one you will know this to be true. They love to play and roughhouse when they are feeling frisky, but are also more than willing companions to cuddle under a blanket on the sofa and binge watch your favorite Netflix series. Frenchies are freethinking, and intelligent but can be little rebels. Which one would think could be frustrating but it actually adds to their lovable personalities. Once these pint sized pups dig their heels in… a mountain is easier to move, so always keep training sessions on the short and fun side. Be firm, consistent and generous in your rewards and both of you will find the experience more than worthwhile. Male French Bulldogs average between lbs and inches tall. When it comes to adopting any animal from a pet store, there is an increased risk of unforeseen health or genetic problems. You also cultivate a life-long relationship with the breeder, meaning support is available to you anytime you may need it. With My Golden Retriever Puppies , you have the option to come and visit both the puppy and the breeder in person! Golden Retrievers are an adaptable breed, meaning they are better at adapting to seasonal changes and various types of climate than certain other breeds. Goldens sport a double-coat, which ensures that these sweet pups are able to tolerate slightly colder temperatures than their friends from other breeds. Your pup deserves better than that, which is why here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we ensure high-quality care is taken of your pet at all times. For more about the true price of a golden retriever puppy, you can read our full price breakdown here. If you prefer to meet a breeder in person, they may be able to offer private visits at their home. Of course! Here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we value family and authenticity, which is why we always guarantee our pups through our 2-year genetic health guarantee. Like adopting a Golden Retriever from a pet store, there is an increased risk when adopting a pup from a rescue center or shelter as well. For example, pups purchased through a shelter or rescue center are far less likely to come with the kinds of health guarantees and reassurances that a breeder can provide. I fell in love with this boy and his faithful dog from a advertising trade card and wanted a unique way to display this beautiful illustration. I decided to wrap antique tinsel over an old cardboard wreath shape, and added antique metallic lace to provide more depth and richness. I then added old mid-century composition leaves, berries holly and tiny pearl beads mistletoe , to frame the boy in his dog. Lovingly handcrafted and signed by Gail Giaimo. Since many of our creations contain glass ornaments that are as much as years old, the condition and patina will vary, which this is part of their vintage one-of-a-kind charm and character. We also use newer Dresden trims on occasion and crinkle wire to wire-wrap ornaments for durability made more recently in Germany using techniques and equipment that have not changed over the past years. You will receive your ornament gently packed between layers of tissue paper in a beautiful embossed gold box with care and handling instructions. With over 15 years of experience, we are expert at wire-wrapping each ornament to help protect it against accidental breakage just like those smart Victorians. We take extra time and pains to meticulously back every scrap to cardstock and old-stock papers to protect these beautiful and fragile illustrations so they will last for generations to come. Product Reviews. This adorable boxer babe is two years old and weighs in around 42 pounds. Harley's journey began as a street dog in Arkansas, before moving into a foster home and now arriving at GLDR. She's currently in foster with our founder and we have lots of info to share with you about this beautiful girl! When it comes time to play, Harley is ready and willing to have some fun! She likes her stuffed toys and enjoys chasing a ball. A yard for her to romp in is a must for this fun-loving pup! Harley does like to play with other dogs, and would do best with dogs her size that have an energetic play style. When it comes time to eat, Harley is very food-motivated and will need to be fed separate from your other dog as she likes to steal meals if given a chance. Harley is both crate-trained and house-trained. She loves going for walks and does best with a harness lead to help keep her focused. As she's still a young pup, she will benefit from continued training and work on the leash. She's a very social and would love to go on lots of adventures with you. At the end of the day, Harley is content to sleep quietly through the night in her crate. Based on our evaluation, Harley would do best in an active home with adults or families with kids ages eight and up. She may also have the potential to live in a home with other dogs of a similar size and energy level. We are happy to do a meet and greet with your family fur baby. Harley will need to go to a cat-free home. Please fill out an application at greatlakesdogrescue.

Breeding Labradoodles takes more than just mating two dogs and hoping for the best. It requires lots of research, time, and money to raise the healthiest litters possible. Unfortunately, the soaring demand for Doodles has also attracted Doodle scammers and puppy mills. The Humane Society conducts an extensive review of problematic breeders and puppy mills each year. Likewise, look for breeders who offer at least a two-year health guarantee for all their puppies. Typically, health warranties cover most or all genetic diseases that the parents have been tested for. For more on issues that can plague Labradoodles take a look at our article Doodle Health Issues and Diseases. Additionally, many reputable breeders are also recommended by Gooddog. To become a certified breeder by any of these organizations, the breeder must follow strict health and genetic testing standards, and follow ethical breeding protocols. All puppies are handled from the day they are born. The pups are exposed to children, everyday sounds, sights, and household experiences. What Makes This Breeder Unique? What is an "original" Australian Labradoodle? The Australian Labradoodle is different from all other labradoodles. Dogs from this cross typically were bred to each other over future generations, whereby the Australian dogs are also know as "Multi-generational" Labradoodles. The resulting labradoodles subsequently have been bred to each other, continuing the multi-generational tradition. Even when the other types of Labradoodles are bred on for generations, the result is not an Australian Labradoodle, as the attributes of the infused breeds were not included in their ancestry. The Australian Labradoodle Club of America was founded exclusively to foster and protect the original Australian Labradoodles that have come directly from Tegan Park and Rutland Manor breeding stock, or their offspring. Our mission is to maintain and improve the quality and soundness of the Australian Labradoodles, and to carefully monitor the further development of the breed. All member breeders are carefully screened to help ensure the future of the Australian Labradoodle. Our member breeders must breed to the highest standards. We have Breeder Mentors to assist member breeders and to help new breeders get off to a good start. If someone in your family has allergies, a multi-generation Australian Labradoodle from Red Desert Doodles should be your first choice. Each of our breeding dogs is fully health tested before they are eligible for breeding. Our puppies all come with a two year health guarantee. Where in the world are our Red Desert Doodles Families? Follow Us On Instagram. With 17 years of experience in breeding Australian Labradoodles, we pride ourselves on selecting only the best dogs for our breeding program, which in turn ensures that we are producing the best puppies imaginable. We work closely with our licensed vet to perform health testing, including hip and elbow testing; eyes, heart, skin, and patella testing; and a series of genetic tests, on all of our breeding dogs. We provide a temperature controlled, in home my master bedroom environment, with sound therapy to expose your puppy to lifes sounds from an early age. This helps desensitize your puppy to the sounds of life traffic, fireworks, outdoor machinery, crying baby, misc appliances, automobiles, etc. We start crate training at 5 weeks with a soothing heartbeat snuggle puppy to comfort them as they transition to sleeping alone and all the puppies love it and sleep better with minimal crying. We add nutrients and special additives for puppies to their drinking water. We add probiotics to their food for a healthy GI tract and immune system. We make special liver water, gruel, with puppy supplements, dog milk formula to their nutritionally dense food to support eyes, ear, bone, joint, coat and heart health. mini labradoodle puppies available now - Between 8 weeks and 10 months, your puppy has a ton of growing to do, and they change drastically from month to month. Each stage of growth requires specific attention, exercise, and diet, so there is much to learn and pay attention to these different growth stages. There may be behavioral challenges while your pup adjusts to their new life without their mother and siblings. This period of adjustment can sometimes lead to fearful and timid behavior, and your puppy will need as much attention and affection as possible. They should be eating 3—4 small meals a day at this stage. You can begin basic command, leash, and potty training at this point too. Although the schedule is not complete this is a critical period to begin socialization and making sure they are calm and friendly with other dogs, just make sure they are also vaccinated. We highly recommend making training a part of their daily activities at this age. Biting can be an issue at this stage too, as they will begin teething, and they will start exploring and chewing whatever they can find. Chew toys and consistent command reinforcement are both vital for avoiding this behavior. The good news is that your puppy will grow out of this habit at around 6 months old. Your lab should also be house-trained by this point, but there may still be the occasional accident. Remember to be gentle but firm when this happens, and your pooch will likely move through it swiftly. They will begin losing their baby teeth at this point, and biting and chewing may reach its peak. Firm but gentle commands, chew toys, and loads of patience are essential at this stage. Your puppy will be testing the limits and may start showing dominance, ignoring known commands, and asserting more independence. You can now drop their meals down to two meals per day, but be sure that they are not eating too quickly. Your puppy will start to closely resemble an adult at 6 months, but remember that mentally, they are still puppies and will need loads of direction and training. Females may enter their first heat at 6—7 months, so keep a careful watch for stray males. They will still display puppy tendencies and traits and have a ton of excitable energy, but they should be fairly obedient and well-trained by this stage. Be sure to give your Labrador plenty of exercise at this stage to help keep them from misbehavior. They will have reached their full height by now but may still gain weight and muscle mass in the coming months. Unless you intend on breeding, you should consider neutering and spaying your puppy to avoid wandering and unwanted pregnancies. While some breeders recommend that you wait until a year old, this is a perfectly suitable time to perform the procedure. They may still gain weight and muscle mass but much slower than during the past few months. They will still display puppy characteristics and even test boundaries, but all in all, they should be obedient and well-trained by now. They will have a ton of energy and still enjoy playtimes and loads of exercise. While they are at their full height at this age, some Labs may appear lanky and still have weight to fill out in the coming months. When Do Labradors Stop Growing? All dogs are unique, and the question of when they stop growing is largely dependent on the individual. Anecdotally, your Lab should have reached their full weight by 18 months and full height by 9—12 months. Most breeders agree that your Lab will stop growing at some point during their second year. Even so, any weight gain during their second year will be minimal, and they will have done the majority of their growth by their first birthday. Mentally, they are out of the puppyhood phase of testing boundaries and disobedience by their first year— if correctly trained. If you have been consistent in training thus far, your Lab should be friendly, obedient, and well-behaved from their first birthday and into adulthood. In males, neutering can sometimes result in a calmer, more relaxed dog, and this, in turn, will slow down his need for exercise and may result in weight gain. A study in showed that dogs neutered before 37 weeks may gain more weight, while dogs that had the procedure after 37 weeks had a slower growth trajectory. The difference was minimal, though, and there is no reason to assume that these procedures have much of an effect on growth rates in dogs. Dangers of Growing Too Quickly or Stunted Growth While some puppies may grow quicker or slower than the agreed-upon average, this is usually nothing to be concerned about due to the individual and unique nature of dogs. However, if your pooch is gaining weight rapidly or not gaining enough, there may be deeper issues to look into. If your dog is from working or hunting stock, they may be smaller than average Labs and are usually lighter for work in the field. Size may also be genetic, and if your Lab comes from small parents, they will be smaller than average. The same may be true of heavier-than-average Labs—if their parents are large, they will likely be similar in size. However, larger-than-average weights may also be due to overfeeding or a lack of exercise , or a combination of both, so be sure to keep their exercise and feeding habits consistent. Image Credit: rebeccaashworth, Shutterstock Growth Distinctions of Different Labradors Although they are designated under the same breed, there are two different types of common Labradors: English and American. English Labradors tend to be stockier and more muscular than their American counterparts and have a thick, waterproof coat , while American Labs have a slender build with a slightly finer coat. English Labs are slightly shorter, topping out at around 22 inches, but their stocky and muscular build often makes them heavier than American Labs. In fact, English Labs have been known to weigh up to 20 pounds more than American Labs without being considered overweight. American Labs are known to be slightly more active and energetic than English Labs, while English Labs tend to be less excitable and more laid back. English Labs are by no means lazy, though, and they still have plenty of energy and stamina to go around. Conclusion: Monthly Labrador Growth Pictures Hopefully, this guide has helped you understand the growth rate of your Labrador puppy and given you a better idea of what to expect during the different stages. Newborn Puppies Newborn puppies are born at the end of nine weeks of pregnancy, with their eyes and ears tightly closed. They already have a fur coat but they cannot yet control their own body temperature. They are dependent on their mother or another heat source to keep them warm. Newborn puppies may cry if cold. But they do not have the strength to cry for long. Newborn Labrador puppies snuggle together to keep warm when their mother is away How Helpless are Newborn Pups? Although they rely on mom for a lot at this stage, newborn puppies are not completely helpless. They can use their front feet to drag themselves towards a heat source or their milk supply. This means their mom, not milk alternatives like cow or goat milk. Newborn pups have no teeth yet. But they can move their heads about to search for a nipple, and they can latch on and suck strongly. Their mother leaves them only to eat, drink and for bathroom purposes. While she is away, the puppies will crawl together to preserve their body heat, as you can see in the photo above. They may also crawl under a heat lamp source to keep warm. In every other respect newborn puppies are completely dependent on the care of their mother. Newborn pups have little control over the rear end of their bodies. The mother dog washes them and licks their bottoms to encourage elimination, licking up and swallowing anything they produce to keep her babies and their nest scrupulously clean. In fact, he may even double his birth weight! One week later and the puppies have doubled their birth weight. Changes are taking place under his eyelids to prepare them for opening. And usually begins during the second week of life. Ears open at this point too, so your puppy will begin to hear. The Labrador puppies in this picture are two weeks olds. Two weeks old and the puppies eyes are now open! You can see that their eyes are now open and the puppies are beginning to look a little more dog-like. The breeder will be handling the puppies more now. And most puppies are wormed for the first time at two weeks old. Most 3 week old puppies can stand and sit, and are beginning to totter about. They are also starting to develop their individuality. No longer are they just a row of identical little fat furry sausages! This little three week old puppy :- Can easily be distinguished from his brother: Teething and Further Development At 3 weeks old, this is also the point at which puppies start teething — cutting their first deciduous baby teeth. Obviously the teeth are appearing for a reason! Some breeders will start to offer the first tastes of solid food at this point. Especially if the litter is a large one and putting a strain on the mother dog. It is lovely to watch a litter of 3 week old puppies beginning to interact with their brothers and sisters. They are running, playing enthusiastically, and have started to wag their little tails. The puppies will start to show bowel control as they move away from the other puppies to defecate. And solid food is becoming a major part of their diet. These little pups are tucking into some puppy food. Four week old puppies having their dinner in the fresh air If the weather is warm enough, puppies will be spending some time outdoors now. Mealtimes are a messy process, so feeding puppies out in the yard can be a good idea. Breeder Involvement Some mother dogs will lose interest in cleaning up after their pups at this point or soon afterwards. And many puppies will be wormed again this week. Vocalizations are becoming stronger at this puppy development stage. The litter will greet their mother noisily when she returns to them, and try hard to follow her out of the whelping box whenever she leaves. The puppies themselves are now eating solid food several times a day and gradually being weaned of their dependency on her milk. Puppies will still suckle ravenously when their mother returns and she will now often feed them standing up and only for a short time. She will also be teaching the puppies not to bite too hard. So, they should be increasingly spending time with humans and learning to be familiar with the sounds and sights of a human family environment. Puppies being raised in kennels must be brought into a home environment regularly from now on to ensure they develop into confident, friendly dogs. Six weeks old and full of mischief Puppies Still Have a Lot to Learn at 6 Weeks In some countries, puppies are taken to their new homes at this age. But this is not a good idea, and can result in a puppy that has poor bite inhibition and is challenging to manage. The puppies are learning not to bite too hard from the reactions of their mother and siblings. Growth is not quite so fast now. But the puppies will still grow strongly for the next few months. Many puppies will be wormed again this week. All that remains is for plenty of great socialization experiences to be packed into this week, with final checks on health. Many breeders will arrange for each seven week old puppy to have a vet check this week. And though some vets advise against it, some puppies are also given their first vaccinations before they leave for their new homes. Some breeders will now have the puppies trained to pee and poop on puppy pads or newspaper. And some will have been whistling to the puppies at meal times to get them used to coming to a human signal. Potty training is now underway and puppy socialization plans are being made. At this point, many of you will be thinking about training your puppy too. The next four weeks are vital in puppy development stages. Your main job is socializing your puppy. This means taking him to lots of new places and exposing him to lots of new experiences. So, life will be starting to get back to normal. Most puppies in the U. In the U. So, not all puppies will get their vaccinations at the exact same age. Socializing your puppy is still the most important job for you at this age. But, you cannot put your puppy on the ground outside until they have received their final vaccination. So, make sure you know exactly when their final jab is. And carry on introducing them to as many new people, things, and experiences as possible throughout this puppy development stage. Some people can suffer from the puppy blues at this stage too, as your life has completely changed! But, that does not mean socialization can stop. Puppies who are isolated at this point will soon lose that friendly fearlessness. You have an important job now, building on what has been achieved so far, and introducing your puppy to the world at ground level. This part of his education can begin once his vaccination cover is complete. He should be fully immunised at around this point. But check with your vet for confirmation of the actual date. Three months also marks the point at which many puppies will drop down from four daily meals, to three. This can cause problems for some puppies because the portions are larger If your puppy gets an upset tummy when you make this change, just go back up to four meals again for a few days, and give smaller portions for a few days when you try again. But, many will need another month before they can cope without frequent bathroom breaks and the occasional accident. Your puppy will begin to lose his baby teeth. This can also be a time at which biting can be most challenging. And try not to worry, this stage will soon be over! A few will need another month or two to complete the process. Remember, no two puppies are the same. That puppy fluffiness will have gone. For many puppies, five months is an awkward, gangly time. A five month old puppy may have shed the last of his soft puppy lines and be looking quite skinny. By the end of this month most puppies will have finished teething but an urge to chew may continue for another few months in some breeds, Labradors included. Some female dogs will have their first season during this month. But, for many, it will be another three or four months before this happens. This is a major milestone for your puppy. He is now looking very much like an adult Labrador. Still a Puppy Because he looks quite grown up, people expect a lot of their 6 month old puppy. But inside, he is still very much a puppy. The beginnings of adolescence and with it an increasing independence of spirit can bring its challenges, but also a whole lot of fun. Image from Pixabay Labrador Puppy Behavior and Growth Stages Labrador retriever puppies do plenty of growing, learning, and maturing in a short amount of time, especially when compared to humans. Labs also change quite a bit, both mentally and physically from even birth to 8 weeks, which would be around the time you would bring your new puppy home. They are dependent on their mother for most things and although they have fur at birth, their mother keeps them warm because their internal thermostats have not begun to work yet. Their mother only lets them alone for bathroom trips and to eat and drink while the puppies huddle together for warmth. Two Weeks Newborn puppies cannot see or hear but by 2 weeks their ears and eyes should begin to open, allowing for hearing and sight. Handling should begin with the breeder for their first introduction to socialization. Puppies will receive their first worming. Three Weeks Puppies will begin teething as teeth come in and some solid food will be introduced gradually. Puppies can sit, stand, and trot about, a little unsteadily, at this time and even play with littermates, each developing their own personalities. Four Weeks Labrador puppies are becoming a lot more vocal and they are looking and acting more like dogs, wagging tails and playing with enthusiasm. Their mother who has kept everything clean until now is beginning to grow weary, so clean-up will now fall to the breeder. Puppies will receive their second worming. Mothers also teach pups not to bite so hard when feeding and playing. Six Weeks Worming will take place for the third time. Puppies are eating all solid food about six times a day and are totally weaned. Their mother still works with them in regards to biting and gives them a sharp bark, or reprimand, when they play too roughly with littermates. Seven Weeks Puppies will be socialized more, often with breeders beginning initial housebreaking. Usually, puppies will be checked out by a veterinarian before leaving their mother, brothers, and sisters for their new home at 8 weeks. Potty training and socialization should continue. Even though your pup was checked out by a veterinarian, you will need to make an appointment to begin the necessary vaccinations. Before bringing your new puppy home, make sure you have all of the necessary supplies for the pup such as bed, blanket, crate, toys, dishes, food, treats, collar, and leash. Keep in mind that this is the first time puppy has been away from their mother, littermates, and their familiar home. Have patience and give them reassurance and love. They may cry or be shy or fearful until they feel comfortable in their new home. Nine Weeks Your Labrador puppy should feel more familiar with its surroundings. Keep on top of housebreaking, taking them out every 20 to 30 minutes, especially after meals. Work on some basic training but keep sessions short. Socialization will be your biggest task now. Take them to as many places as you can so they can see situations as an adventure, not something to be feared. Ten Weeks Your puppy will need more vaccinations and their veterinarian will check them out and their weight to ensure that they are growing properly. Keep working on socialization. By this time your pup should be properly socialized, but continue to take them to as many places as you can. They may act independently and test you by ignoring certain commands that they are very familiar with. Be firm. Five Months Your puppy may be totally housebroken by this time and able to be left alone a little longer without accidents. Some pups take a little longer just as children may for potty training. They are beginning to be stronger and when they become too weighty, pulling on the leash will be a chore if not properly trained. Six Months Between 4 and 6 months your pup may try to challenge you or other family members. You and others must be the dominant forces in the family. Your pup is also looking more like a dog, but keep in mind, they are still a puppy at heart. Meals can now be reduced to two times a day. You will need to continue with training and obedience classes can be a huge benefit. Your pup will be quite a lot of fun at this time with lots of energy, stamina, and exuberance but will also show some characteristics of a rebellious teenager which may be frustrating. Be patient, yet firm. They may have the appearance of an adult Labrador but are without the maturity of one. When is Do Labs Stop Growing? Keep in mind that just as humans are individuals, so too are dogs and some may be full-grown at a certain age, while others may add a few more pounds after this time. Their full height, however, will be reached by nine months of age. A full-grown Lab will range in weight from 55lbs — 75lbs for females and 64lbs — 85lbs for males. Your Labrador retriever may grow to be large or be a smaller version. This helps to ease your mind. Enjoy every moment with your Labrador puppy as they grow through the stages. Recent Posts. Save to Pinterest The Stages of Puppy Growth and Development Month by Month The following are the stages of puppy growth and development, starting at birth and ending when your dog reaches adulthood. The Neonatal Stage 0 to 2 weeks This is the newborn puppy growth stage that lasts until two weeks of age. At this developmental stage, puppies are blind and deaf. Expect puppies at this point to sleep almost constantly and their mother will take care of everything, keeping them warm, feeding them, and keeping them clean. The Transitional Stage 2 to 4 weeks At this puppy growth stage , they will start to open up their eyes and respond to sounds, light, and movement around them. You will also notice a puppy at this point starting to get more mobile, although they will still tend to crawl instead of walking. They do, however, have enough strength to stand up, but will stumble a lot. A puppy in this developmental stage will just be starting to recognize their siblings and mother. Lab puppies open their eyes at about two weeks old. By this time, Labrador puppies will have their eyes fully open and most will be at least partly open. Ears open at this point too and your puppy will begin to hear. Period of Awakening of Senses 3 to 4 weeks At this period , a puppy develops various senses rapidly. They start to get fully alert and aware of their environment and may recognize you and other humans that are frequently around. The Socialization Period 4 to 7 Weeks Once a puppy is around four weeks old, they start to learn the most important things in life-related to social development. They will learn to not bite all the time and how to interact with their siblings. Interactions with humans are especially important between five and seven weeks. This is also the time they will start to understand discipline thanks to their mother. She will start weaning her puppies and teaching them manners, like acknowledging she is in charge. As the owner, you can start introducing food to your puppy when they are around four weeks old. Start small and begin to give them more food as the mother continues to wean them. You should also continue handling the puppy every day. However, be sure not to separate them from their siblings or mother for over ten minutes each day, since this can lead to issues with training and socialization. Dogs who are separated too soon may also be nervous and more likely to bark and bite. During this period, let the mother dog take care of discipline; you should not correct the dog for mouthing or housebreaking mistakes until later in life. To help ease them through this process, avoid traumatic events, loud voices, or harsh discipline. You should also make sure your pooch has plenty of human contact during this stage. If you want, you can start leash training and even teach simple commands such as sit, down, stay and come. In terms of development, you will notice that your puppy can sleep through the whole night and starts to develop better control of its bowels and bladder. Most vets suggest that new outings should wait until they are fully vaccinated. We rub the Calmeroos Puppy Toy on littermates and mom to get their scent. When we get home the Calmeroos Puppy Toy helps our puppy feel comfortable and adjust more quickly to his new environment. Many puppies will go to their new homes at around 8 weeks old. We recently put together a blog post on our sister site detailing what you can expect from an 8-week-old puppy. The Juvenile Stage 3 to 4 Months At this point in development, a puppy can be compared to a juvenile. They will be more independent and may ignore the basic commands that they know very well. If this happens, firmly and gently reinforce the commands and other training. You may also notice your pup starting to test your authority by play biting or similar actions. You can also redirect your dog to a toy that they can bite. Either can end up teaching your pooch that it is okay to fight with you and challenge your authority. The Ranking Period 3 to 6 Months When your puppy is between four and six months old, you should expect them to be somewhat bratty, showing more willfulness and independence. They are more likely to test your limits and may try to show dominance over children or other family members. If they fail to listen to you or come when called, it can be dangerous as it puts them at risk of injury when in public. It can also hurt future responses to you, making them less likely to listen. This is also when your dog will be teething, so give them toys like frozen dog Kong toys to relieve pressure and pain. Chewing behaviors will also start growing at this point so look for some safe chew toys to keep your dog entertained. This is when hormonal changes start to occur and is the ideal time to spay or neuter your pup. UC Davis published a study comparing the long-term health effects of neutering in Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers. Adolescence 6 to 18 Months After six months, your pup is already in the final stage of puppy development but is still young. This is a fun and exciting time for your pooch since they will be learning, full of energy, and exuberant. During this time, it is important to remember that even if your puppy now looks like a grown-up dog, they are still a puppy, at least in its mental capacity and emotional maturity. Work to slowly increase training and other activities. You can even work on advanced training such as agility or herding. Another option is to simply keep training them to ensure they interact in a non-aggressive and non-threatening way with other animals. It is also possible that your dog will go through another fearful period of time at some point after they reach six months. You can speed up the process with counter-conditioning and desensitization. It fits very well and is quite apt! Final Thoughts With the knowledge of how and when your new puppy will develop, you are better able to meet their needs. Provide socialization at the appropriate times and be sure to give your puppy plenty of social interactions with their siblings as well as humans and any other pets in your home. Your dog should reach maturity at some point between one and two years old with plenty of variation based on breed, Labradors are considered mature at between 2 and 2. Helps ease anxiety in their new home. We love using Bully Sticks to help divert these unwanted behaviors. Check out more of our favorites on our New Puppy Checklist.
