It was my understanding that when the cord was chewed down to the base of the belly it was sometimes difficult to get it to stop bleeding. I took the hemostat and pinched the umbilical cord about 2 inches from the base of the pups belly then cut the cord rather than let Raven chew it off. I kept the hemostat on the cord for about 2 minutes to let it clout. The umbilical cord dries up quickly and then within a day or 2 it falls off. Raven was a good mama and took care of her poops. Puppy eyes and ears are closed at this stage and puppies army crawl around the whelping box looking for a teat to suckle. We did everything we could to make sure our pups stayed warm by adding a watt heat lamp to the whelping box and portable heating unit in the puppy room. As I mentioned Raven stayed in the whelping box most of week 1 and of course… the puppy piles! One thing I learned is if I had a puppy on my lap then do not let Raven lick those areas or be prepared for a little accident on your lap. While caring for Raven and her litter Raven was really blowing out her coat that first week, but as time went on it slowed down. I heard from other friends this is common and that Raven blew out her coat much less than other mama dogs. We got Probiotics for Raven before her first litter, but forgot to order them for her second litter. Open 7 Days Choosing a Healthier Puppy The reality is that veterinarians generally have vastly different criteria than breeders for choosing a healthy puppy. Breeders adhere to standards that are for the show ring, not health, whereas veterinarians are more interested in health. So with this in mind, What do you need to know to choose the healthiest pup you can? We suggest you follow these guidelines: 1. Look at the parents as well as the pup, but you gain more from the parents. Choose as wide nostrils as possible. Choose the longest noses you can find yes we agree shorter noses are cuter, but that comes with a price. That price is a sadder pup through life and far higher veterinary costs. So please be acutely aware of this when choosing your pup. Choose longer necks and narrower chests. Cambridge studies are showing that this is a better predictor of less breathing concerns than even long noses. In our opinion the classic stocky dog that many breeders prefer are the worst for health concerns including back problems. See a more detailed explanation below. If possible, watch and play with the parents for 15 minutes. How noisy are they? How much do they need to stop and rest? Behaviour: Ensure parents and pup are friendly and happy, and that you can open their mouths and play with them. It is irrelevant what your breeder tells you about breathing concerns as they pretty much all say their dogs have never had any breathing concerns! There is no testing, standard or certificates for breathing concerns so you need to follow the above guidelines. Shorter, wider necks, narrow nostrils and shorter noses all mean a much higher chance of breathing concerns. Longer noses, longer necks, wider nostrils and narrower chests are less chance of more severe concerns. There are some back scoring systems in place that your breeder may or may not have engaged in. Our concern is the current systems which are employed are grossly inadequate, passing healthy backs that potentially still have severe and significant problems. A grade 3 is a severe deformed vertebrae that has a high chance of causing pain or a prolapsed disc. A grade 2 is a moderately deformed one and a grade 1 a mildly deformed one. An overall score of 15 has been considered a pass, and reasonable to breed from. Potentially, such a score may entail 5 shocking grade 3 vertebrae if no other deformed ones exist , or 10 moderately deformed ones. Ask for the x-rays for both parents and pup if they have been done, and get your own brachycephalic vet to look at them and interpret any score that it comes with. At the very least, ask the exact score, how many of each type of vertebrae and where in the spine they are. There are different areas that carry different risks. In our opinion the standard is severely inadequate for breeding which is allowing this problem to continue. DNA Testing This one worries us the most. DNA testing is done for a number of extremely rare conditions that are almost nonexistent anyway, and none of them test for hemivertebrae or breathing concerns , allergies, hip dysplasia , cherry eyes , or any of the encephalitis seizure problems these breeds can suffer. Entropion and Cherry Eye What feature on a bulldog gets us very excited? Healthy eyes! The bulldog breed struggles with two primary eye issues that we focus on eliminating: entropion and cherry eye. Cherry eye is best identified as a protruding gland mass extended from the eye. The pink, circular mass looks somewhat like a small cherry, hence the name. Cherry eye is thought to be caused by both environmental and hereditary factors. Hereditary factors are not the only cause of cherry eye however. Cherry eye can be caused by eye irritation and the constant rubbing of the eye. Allergy season always causes a spike in cherry eye issues in vet offices across the nation. Entropion is another common eye issue that effects the bulldog breed. The overdone, heavy wrinkled bulldog is most prone to entropion issues. Causing this condition is the heavy wrinkle set of the bulldog itself. The heavy wrinkles of the bulldog will push up the face and actually cause the eyelid to curl inward. The pressure of the heavy wrinkles not only causes breathing problems, it creates eye issues as well. This is just another reason the ultra-wrinkly bulldog breeder is irresponsible and is creating long term damage to the breed. Great eyes are another important factor that we look at in our adults. We want all of our adult bulldogs and puppies to have healthy eyes that do not suffer from entropion or cherry eye. Heart Disease Heart murmurs and enlarged hearts are two issues the we test for and focus on eliminating from our bloodlines. A heart murmur is extra vibration in the heart that indicates a disturbance in the blood flow. Heart murmurs are graded on a scale and often grow worse as the bulldog ages. Enlarged hearts show up in bulldogs occasionally as well. While not as common, the enlarged heart often affects older bulldogs when they do occur. There is good reason to believe this is a heart condition that is affecting the line. We will provide the account information for the deposit. Cleared deposits are the only way to reserve a puppy; no cleared deposit means no puppy reservation. Deposits are nonrefundable. By instituting any step in the process, the customer acknowledges and agrees to these terms. Deposits are considered a commitment, and we understand that the puppy will have a home with your family. Final payment for the balance owed must be cleared before pickup. Unfortunately, we do not accept checks at the time of pick up for the final payment on a puppy because all payments must be cleared. Any daily boarding charges must also be settled prior to pick up. The only time a refund will be given is if KC Bernedoodles cancels the purchase due to unforeseen circumstances, otherwise deposits are always non-refundable. Puppy Selection Anyone can be added to the Waiting List with a completed deposit, but KC Bernedoodles reserves the right to the first pick of all litters. When the puppies are born, they are given a color-coded collar. Puppies are discussed by their collar color, though our kids have a tendency to name them as well. Exact puppy choice happens by video interactions, exchanging photos, or through phone conversations at week six so their personality has time to develop. We will make every effort to help you make the best decision for your individual needs. For the health of the puppies, we do not allow visitors. Exact puppy choice begins on week six. Waiting this long allows us to get to know their personalities and help guide you to make the best choice. Choosing a puppy occurs in waiting list order. To facilitate all families making timely decisions, each customer has 2 hours from when we contact you beginning on week six to choose your puppy. We make every effort to lead you through the process of choosing the best companion for your individual needs and lifestyle, so please let us know your situation and preferences. Failure to choose within that 2 hours forfeits your turn, and you will move to the end of the line. The key is to let the puppy have the time it needs with its mother and siblings, and transition the puppy to its new family as soon as it is properly able, in order to bond with them early and well. This usually happens at around 8 weeks. By pick up time your puppy will not be dependent upon its mother since it will have been weaned starting around week 4. For the health of our family and animals, we cannot take back a puppy once it has left our home, but we can help you find a new home for them. The father is a Mini Poodle and the mother is an F1 Labradoodle. The F1B Minature Labradoodles usually have soft hair that is usually wavy or curly. On the other hand, Staffordshire Bull Terriers have only one available size; however, they can vary a little. Typically a Staffy would weigh between twenty-four to twenty-eight pounds and reach sixteen to eighteen inches. There are various colours, including black, white, red , blue, fawn, and each of those colours can have white markings. Poodles have a single dense coat that grows similarly to human hair. It continually grows and will need regular maintenance and cutting. Poodles also have coats that can be a solid colour or multi-coloured; there is a massive variety. In each litter of Staffypoos, you will see the many different coat lengths, types, and colours. Poodles tend to live between 12 to 15 years and Staffies between 12 to 14 years. If your Staffypoo is healthy, you could expect them to live between 12 and 15 years. After all, these dogs were trained as circus performers in the past. Poodles and Staffies are family-oriented dogs ; they enjoy spending time with family and are fun-loving and lively dogs that love to please their people. Neither dog does well when left alone for long periods and can develop some behavioural issues if left to themselves for too long. Therefore, you can expect a mix of these two to produce puppies of a similar temperament. However, if the Staffypoo mix has a Toy Poodle parent, there might be some issues with dog aggression, so something to watch out for if you prefer the smaller sized Staffypoo. Their coat can be one single color or a mix of colors. Coat Type The Poodle has a curly, long coat [9] www. It can get out of hand quickly if not properly taken care of. The Staffy has a pretty low-maintenance short coat that only sheds minimally. However, their mostly self-cleaning hair coat does leave them more prone to ticks and fleas. The combination of the two should give a medium-length coat that will require some attention. Temperament Staffypoos love people above all else. They tend to be stubborn and impulsive, but they want nothing more than to spend time with their people. If you are upset, Staffypoos will stop at nothing to make you feel better in any way that they can. They are a bright and exuberant breed who will make funny noises to get your attention or throw tantrums if they do not get their way. Oh, the joys of a stubborn and intelligent dog. Training Though stubborn, Staffypoos do very well with training and prove to be good students for a good trainer. To properly train, you must be the one to set the rules and boundaries for them to follow while still being flexible. As athletic dogs, they need a considerable amount of exercise and love to go on walks, runs, swims, and hikes. Are Staffypoos aggressive? The history of the Staffy has ensured that they are not the types of dogs to choose passiveness over action. If provoked, they will likely not back down unless taught otherwise [10] sbtca. However, the mix with the Poodle should lessen this aggression. This does not mean, though, that the majority of all Staffordshire Bull Terriers are aggressive. If properly bred, trained, and socialized, any dog can overcome streaks of aggression. It is just worth noting that half of their genes stem from a tenacious and impulsive breed that needs to be taught how to react to the unexpected [11] sbtca. Are Staffypoos good with young children? Staffypoos love people in general, but they have a soft spot in their hearts for children. Of course, correct training, supervision, and socialization are a must for those expected to spend time around children [12] sbtca. However, you would be hard-pressed to find a dog or any living thing that loves children more than a well-trained and well-bred Staffypoo. Health The Staffypoo is prone to the diseases that are found in their parents. Luckily, their risk is decreased since they are a mixed breed. Standard Poodles are at risk for gastric dilatation, epilepsy, eye disorders, and a few other issues [14] www. The most common issues found amongst Staffies are with their eyes and their joints [15] sbtca. It is also encouraged that you get your dog evaluated by an ophthalmologist, tested for hereditary cataracts, and tested for L2HGA [16] www. Cataracts and dysplasia of the hip or elbow seem to be the biggest health threats to Staffypoos [17] www. As with all dogs, they should be regularly taken to the vet for routine check-ups and vaccines. Be sure to keep an eye out! Life Expectancy The average healthy Staffordshire Bull Terrier-Poodle mix will live anywhere from 12 to 18 years of age. I reckon along with working dogs they must be among the healthiest and least prone to the common illnesses of purebred dogs. Most of them just seem to visit me once a year for their annual checkup. Of course these are terrible generalisations, and you can be unlucky. Some dogs get atopic dermatitis, and others have behaviour problems like any breed. Inter-dog aggression is probably higher than average for example. There are two problems with this: Breed of origin is a very poor predictor of aggression. The breeds we think they are probably wrong anyway. Just like life! Are They Pitbulls? Have a look at these dogs commonly confused with crossbreeds. Bull Terrier These are fine dogs, but nothing like Staffie crosses. Whenever they want to talk about Pit Bulls they seem to use a photo of a Staffordshire Bull Terrier or a Staffie cross. Which only adds to the prejudice. The photo shows what Pit Bulls generally look like, though you will see another picture of an American Pit Bull Terrier here. They resemble taller, long-legged and skinny Staffordshire Bull Terriers with a remarkably smooth coat. Of course this one has had something unspeakable done to the ears. The thick-headed dogs, mainly. Are we just giving in to a very human tendency to have to put a label on everything? The breed that exists under the radar, taken for granted, but always there being awesome. Just like moggies are in the cat world. Maybe trying to fit them to any breed is the problem. Since the only thing they all have in common is a boofhead, perhaps we should call them the Australian Boofhead. Why These Dogs Need Homes I think that a lot of the behavioural issues can be blamed on the terrible raw deal they often get. These are the dogs most likely to be surrendered to a shelter, the most likely to get parvovirus in our clinic, and generally the ones less likely to get what they need in terms of care and socialisation. Aggie And the ones most likely to be on the other side of the wire in dog rescues and shelters. This means many come away disappointed. But I suspect more people would take them if they knew what they were really like. Check with the shelter about the history and known problems with that dog. If you take that dog, a good dog training class is essential. These dogs are hard to walk if untrained, but then all dogs and owners benefit from training.
