Dogs come with all sorts of quirks, but have you ever seen a green puppy? And don't worry, this pup's not green because her humans went overboard for St. Patrick's Day. Her work focuses on all things science, but her passion projects are usually environmentally related. Jennifer holds bachelor's degrees in biology and English, and a master's degree in journalism. Patrick's Day: a green puppy! Audra Rhys and Trevor Mosher of Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia, say they feared for the worst when their female valley bulldog—a boxer and bulldog hybrid—Freya gave birth to a black amniotic sac on Jan. They assumed the puppy inside this oddly colored sac was stillborn because she arrived apart from the other seven healthy pups Freya delivered in clear sacs. But then something amazing happened: the puppy started to move. Luckily, it turns out green puppies are very rare but otherwise normally healthy. While we're not entirely sure why it happens, some light-colored pups may gain a green tint when they come into contact with a green pigment called biliverdin during development. Biliverdin, the same pigment that gives bruises their greenish hue, may on occasion contaminate the placenta and amniotic fluid and effectively dye a puppy's fur. Just so everyone's clear: It's not artificial green dye applied after birth. Little Fiona, who Rhys and Mosher named after the lovable character in Shrek, is surely a miracle. But she isn't the first shamrock-colored pup to make the headlines. Back in a golden-green Labrador puppy named Hulk was born in Lancashire, England. A pair of "Hulk pups" were also born in Spain in .More recently, Forest, a green golden retriever pup, was born in the Scottish Highlands in , followed by baby Pistachio born on the Italian island of Sardinia in .At the time, Pistachio's human told the BBC he hoped his green puppy, clad in the color of luck and hope, would bring us all a little boost of positivity in the coming year of trying times. Unfortunately, green puppies lose their unique coloring rather quickly as they grow. Rhys says Fiona was initially a light lime green, but they've noticed the color fading. According to Rhys, the couple plans on keeping Fiona or finding a forever home with a close family member if they cannot keep her. She adds it has been amazing to see the amount of people interested in Fiona's story and the joy she's brought to so many. Was this page helpful? Share this article Share 'But when Milly started to lick the placenta off she actually had a green tinge. We were laughing and saying no, this can't be green. It's to do with the placenta, so it's a phenomenon, it's just very rare in dogs. She added: 'The colour's faded now and she's doing well even though she was the smallest of the litter, she's so sweet. While it stains, Fifi's green tinge is only temporary and she will soon resemble her boisterous brothers. Puppies can turn green because of a green bile pigment called Biliverdin that is found in the placenta of dogs. On very rare occasions, the substance can stain the puppy's coat when it mixes with the mother's amniotic fluid - the liquid that protects and nourishes the pup. It is most visible on light-coloured breeds such as Labradors, is harmless and wears off after a few weeks. In humans, Biliverdin is responsible for the greenish colour seen in bruises and also causes jaundice in babies. It is also found in the blue-green blood of many fish, the wings of moth and butterflies and the eggs of frogs. Other unusual Labrador puppy colors Have you heard the rumors about dams giving birth to green Labrador puppies? In this article we take a look at whether there really is such a thing as a green Lab dog, or a naturally green dog from any breed. This video documents the surprise arrival of a green Golden Retriever puppy. But is a real green dog as rare as the narrator makes out, and has this phenomenon ever been documented in Labradors? Is there such a thing as a green Labrador? Green Labrador refers to the unusual occurrence of Labrador puppies with green fur. Green puppies are a rare occurrence, but any breed of puppy can be affected, including Labradors. The events which cause a puppy to be born green can also happen to any color of puppy, but the results are only visible on puppies with pale colored fur. So only yellow Labs sometimes start out green. There are two ways a Labrador puppy can be born looking green. What turns a Labrador puppy green — lochia Firstly, some puppies are born covered in a green goo. Lochia is a mix of blood, mucus, and tissue fragments from where the placenta has separated from the wall of the womb. It is usually green at first due to the presence of biliverdin in the placenta. A mom dog who has a large litter of puppies produces more lochia than a mom who has a small litter. Sometimes a puppy from a large litter will come out coated in green lochia. This could be more likely for the last puppy of a large litter, and if the mom had a rest before they were born, because they are more likely to get coated in lochia in the birth canal. When this happens, the color will disappear as soon as the mom finishes licking them clean. By 24 hours after the birth, the color of the lochia should change to dark reddish brown, and the quantity will gradually diminish over several weeks. Green discharge lasting more than 24 hours, or any color of discharge with a foul smell, requires immediate veterinary attention. What turns a Labrador puppy green — biliverdin in the amniotic fluid An even more impressive way that Labrador puppies can be born green is if biliverdin escapes the placenta and makes its way into the amniotic fluid surrounding a puppy. If the puppy is exposed to the biliverdin for a while, it stains their fur green, so that even once mom has licked them clean they still appear green for a week or two after birth. What happens when a dog gives birth to a green puppy? Depending on how exposed to biliverdin their fur was, a green puppy might stay green for a day or two all the way up to a week or two. Examples of real green dogs Here are some examples of real naturally green puppies, including a green Labrador or two, whose color lasted after they had been cleaned off and dried up: In a brown Labrador dog named Milly in Lancashire England gave birth to a green girl puppy that her owners nicknamed Fifi, after Princess Fiona in the Shrek franchise. Also in , Rio the Golden Retriever video at the top of this page gave birth to a litter of 9 puppies, including a green boy puppy nicknamed Forrest. His breeder reported that in the end it took just over a week for him to fully de-green. In Sardinia on October 9th , a mixed breed sheepdog called Spelacchia gave birth to a litter of five puppies including a green boy puppy her owner named Pistachio. His owner Cristian chose Pistachio as the puppy to keep from the litter, because green is one of the colors of the tricolore national flag and represents hope and good luck to Italians! Two weeks later and nearly 6, miles away, a white German Shepherd Dog in North Carolina named Gypsy also gave birth to a green puppy. His breeder nicknamed him Hulk at first, and later Pikachu as their color started to fade. And earlier this year, a Bulldog called Freya living in Nova Scotia gave birth to a green puppy with brown spots. But back to puppies for now… How often are green puppies born? This is partly because there is no rule about or system for documenting cases. In the past, green puppies would have been little more than a fluke occurrence and an anecdote for the breeder to tell in years to come. We hear about instances of green dogs more often now thanks to social media and online news reporting. Other unusual Labrador puppy colors Green Labrador puppies are a fascinating and short lived occurrence. Susanna Reid brands Piers Morgan 'a mongrel' as they fawn over puppy who was smuggled in to UK Elaine, 56, said: "She came out in the sack so we thought that it was the placenta that made her look very dark. We thought she was a black Labrador. We were laughing and saying no, this can't be green. It's to do with the placenta, so it's a phenomenon, it's just very rare in dogs. Fifi was born green because of a pigment called Biliverdin that is found in the placenta of dogs. On very rare occasions, the substance can stain the puppy's coat when it mixes with the mother's amniotic fluid - the liquid that protects and nourishes the pup. It is mostly visible on light-coloured breeds such as Labradors but wears off after a few weeks. In humans, Biliverdin is responsible for the greenish colour seen in bruises and also causes jaundice in babies. The couple believe Fifi might be one of only three Labrador puppies born in the world with the condition. Elaine, who owns a motorhome business, researched the condition online and found just two other cases - one in Spain and the other Clayton-le-Moors, Lancs. She said: "The colour's faded now and she's doing well even though she was the smallest of the litter, she's so sweet. We pay for your stories! Do you have a story for The Sun Online news team? Some hair loss cases can be severe and will require both medical diagnosis and treatment. While a French Bulldog losing hair rapidly can be alarming, the best thing that a dog owner can do is be prepared to know what they are looking for to best treat their pet. So Why is my French Bulldog losing so much hair? The most common reason for hair loss in dogs is parasites and allergies. While stress and some other health issues may cause hair loss in dogs, these are typically issues that occur in older, larger breeds. Hair loss due to Allergies Your French Bulldog losing fur could be caused by an allergic reaction, the most common trigger for hair loss in dogs. Like humans, dogs can be susceptible to several allergens, each producing its effect. Most dogs are allergic to flea bites, with the severity varying in each dog. Hair loss from allergies can also be caused by shampoo or other topical solutions; rashes and hair loss that occur from such a reaction usually show up within hours of exposure. Food allergies or environmental allergies may also cause your French Bulldog to develop unhealthy, itchy, or irritated skin, resulting in a shorter or thinner coat. Your Frenchie can develop an allergy to a food or environmental condition over time, so such an allergy may be difficult to discern as it occurs. Beyond fleas, lice, ticks, and mites are other external parasites that can cause hair loss as they irritate your Frenchie and cause biting, itching, or scratching. Ringworm is a particularly contagious external parasite that causes hair loss in your dog and can spread to humans. The infection presents itself in a ring or circle patch of hair loss. A French Bulldog losing fur can also be attributed to internal parasites, as an infection of this manner often causes malnutrition in dogs. The primary internal parasites dog owners should be aware of are roundworms, hookworms, tapeworms, and giardia. Dogs that experience hypothyroidism may also be prone to losing fur and having bald spots. These are more serious conditions that require medical attention and diagnosis. Stress is another possible contributing factor to your French Bulldog losing hair. Travel, environmental changes, or any other significant life change or alteration may cause such stress in your French Bulldog that it begins to shed or lose fur at a concerning pace. What are symptoms of hair loss in my French Bulldog? A dog presenting serious hair loss may also have itchy skin that appears scaly or even discolored. You may notice that your French Bulldog losing fur is shedding more than usual, and the fur may even appear dry or brittle. Dry or brittle fur is especially common in a dog suffering from ringworm which causes the fur to fall out as the fungus spreads. If your French Bulldog is experiencing a more severe case of hair loss, the texture and volume of its coat will most likely see these changes. If your French Bulldog is losing hair or fur, behaviors to watch out for may be increased itching or biting of the skin. A dog going through the discomfort of a condition that is causing hair loss may also begin to groom more frequently, to the point of causing damage to the coat and skin in some cases. For a French Bulldog experiencing hair loss due to increased dryness and itchiness, several topical solutions are available to dog owners that are easy and cheap to perform. Suppose you believe your French Bulldog losing hair results from an external parasite. Fleas and other external parasites such as lice, ticks, and mites may find this mixture to be toxic or unpleasant; however, dog owners must be careful not to use this mixture on any open cuts, wounds, or sores that may be present on irritated skin as this will hurt your dog. This remedy aims to make your dog skinless appetizing parasites such as fleas, ticks, mites, or lice. What can my vet do? A veterinarian will need to evaluate your Frenchie to determine its symptoms and proceed with treatment. Suppose your French Bulldog losing hair is being caused by an allergen or external parasite. In that case, a veterinarian can provide medicine or topical solutions to treat the allergy reaction or rid your dog of the allergenic parasite. The resolution to assisting your Frenchie in dealing with an internal parasite causing hair loss will be similar. After examining your Frenchie and determining that your dog has an internal parasite, an experienced veterinarian can offer medicinal treatment with clear follow-up instruction and direction to get rid of these parasites. Surgery is also another option to resolve health issues related to these conditions. If you notice that your French Bulldog is experiencing abnormal hair loss, the best course of action is to be aware of the many potential causes. Whether your Frenchie is losing hair due to parasites, both external or internal, or is suffering from some other condition, you have the power to help them. However, you choose to help your Frenchie with unusual shedding or hair loss, which will vary depending on several factors. The most important factor will be that your Frenchie is in the care of an invested and loving dog owner. Flea 2. Physiologically, a major contributor is excessive licking. Frenchie tends to resort to this when they are bored, stressed or anxious. When you allow your Frenchie to engage in this, the enzymes from the saliva they release can cause an irritation, which gives rise to a localized dermatitis and may become generalized over time. While a human being who is allergic may exhibit such symptoms as watering of the eyes, a runny nose or even itchy skin, Frenchies that are allergic show signs on their skin and ears. Basically, by excessive scratching due to the itchy skin or chewing of the hair in an effort to relieve themselves. Watch out for the following things that your Frenchie can be allergic to: i. Foods ii. Inhaled Allergens iii. Other materials One of the most common allergies in dogs, not particular to Frenchies is Flea allergy. So, check to see that your French bulldog is free of this. There are different species of mites what cause mange to Frenchie; it is the Demodex species which cause the Demodectic mange, or the Sarcoptes species which cause the Sarcoptic mange. Demodectic mange is usually localized on one spot of an infected Frenchie while the Sarcoptic mange is much more general on the body of the infected dog, it is also contagious to humans, unlike the demodectic mange. If these hormones get to a certain level, high or low, either by over-production or by under-production, it is considered to be abnormal and therefore can cause hair loss in French Bulldogs. One of the most common hormonal problems that can cause hair loss in French Bulldogs is called Hypothyroidism, which occurs when the canine thyroid gland is not functioning properly and thus produces hormones below the normal level. This hormonal problem can rapidly increase the rate of hair loss and cause the hair to become brittle and dry. For example, dogs with inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, or who are undergoing regular chemotherapy, often have dull and thinning hair. Frenchie that have kidney failure can be observed to have unkempt, dull coats and may have a musty smell coming from their skin. For dogs with liver failure, they may have orange-yellow skin and nails that grow but are flaky and brittle. These are some common causes of Hair Loss for French Bulldog. Do you know more and you'll like to add to advance this knowledge? Please, leave us a comment below. Thanks for reading. This is a pretty scary situation to be in. Try not to get too afraid, though. Here is some information about the hair loss that you should take note of. Some breeds will naturally shed more than others. Some kids are going to shed very little. French bulldogs don't shed very much, but they do shed their undercoat twice a year. Since french bulldogs don't shed that often, you know that seeing patches of hair falling out is very abnormal. Here are a few things that may have caused this hair loss: 1- The Hair Is Falling out Because of a Lack of Nutrition According to Royal Canin , most dogs will begin to lose their hair if they are not eating a well-balanced diet. It is very similar to what would happen to humans if they weren't eating the right foods. Most dog owners care about the health of their pets, so they try to cook the dog's meals and make foods as natural as possible. Going the homecooked route is an excellent alternative to generic kibble. However, it is a method that should be used with caution. You must make sure that the diet is equal, consistent, and well-balanced. Generic kibble is quite dull, but it does the trick as far as making sure there is a balance in the ingredients. If you are making it yourself, you should try to include the same components if not better. Most dog owners trip up on this and cause more harm than healing. Your veterinarian might try to see if anything else contributed to the hair loss first. If you find that the hair loss is due to the diet, work with your vet to come up with a proper one. The most common problems stem from Hypothyroidism and having a low thyroid problem. Most people mistake the two and cause a misdiagnosis. However, it is true that those problems cause significant hair loss. Diseases can cause hair loss, as well. Cushing's disease would be another one. Cushing's disease happens when the dog is producing too many hormones. The overproduction of hormones suppresses the body's ability to grow hair properly. According to The Honest Kitchen , Cushing's disease can also cause skin thinning and hyperpigmentation. Your veterinarian will most likely prescribe the dog a thyroid medication to control the overproduction. Your dog may also have to undergo some testing to ensure that nothing is leading to a bigger problem. Environmental means that the dog is allergic to something in the environment. It might be a fragrance or a certain spray that you use or a certain plant that is in the room. Any of these allergic reactions can cause major hair loss. The dog might also be very itchy and scratchy. Hair loss won't be the only symptom of an allergic reaction. In some cases, you can probably get an over-the-counter drug to treat some reactions that your dog has. Wag Walking recommends that you keep track of all events of hair loss so you can make a detailed report to the vet. Sometimes there can be more than one reason why the hair is falling out. Bacterial infections and yeast infections are sometimes a side effect of another infection or disease. In that case, avoid self-diagnosing at all costs. Contact a professional for a proper evaluation of the problem. Your vet will probably give you some antibiotics to treat the illnesses. If your dog has ringworm, you will most likely get some type of cream or ointment. There are two versions of the mange disease. Demodectic mange cannot be transmitted to any humans. Sarcoptic mange can be transmitted to other people. This parasitic mites that come from this disease will thrive in the hair follicles. Since they are biting at the roots of the hair, it will begin to fall out. Sarcoptic mange is very itchy as well. After a while, you may notice that there are scabs and sores on the skin from the bites. It is best to avoid freaking out if this situation ever occurs. Just talk to your vet and be patient. This type of disease can be taken care of with the same products used to eliminate fleas and ticks. Metastatic cancer is paraneoplastic that is common as well. Paraneoplastic means that it is an internal disease that manifests itself onto the skin of the dog. In order to find out if your dog has this type of cancer, your dog will have to get diagnosed through a biopsy at the veterinarian's location. Your dog will most likely be treated through medication and some form of chemotherapy. This type of alopecia is most common in English bulldogs. It can happen to french bulldogs , but it is pretty rare. When it happens, the hair will be dark, and it won't cause any itching. Most dog owners don't have to medicate this problem because the hair will grow back on its own. If you do go to the vet for this, you might just get a melatonin medication. Hills Pet suggests that if you live in a moderate climate, seasonal shedding will be minimal. Remember to consult a professional before you get any medication or try to diagnose the problem on your own. One symptom could be the result of multiple problems and vice versa. With some simple knowledge and proactive care, you can help your Frenchie stay healthy and happy. What Is a French Bulldog? A French Bulldog, commonly referred to as a Frenchie, is a small breed of Bulldog that originated in France. This breed is typically stocky and muscular, with a distinctive bat-like look. They have a short coat that can come in a variety of colors, usually tan, cream, gray, or brindle. French Bulldogs have a friendly and personable disposition, making them an ideal companion for families. Frenchie owners should be aware of the potential for hair loss due to allergies, parasites, and endocrine diseases. Regular visits to the veterinarian for check-ups and vaccinations are essential for ensuring that your Frenchie stays healthy and free of any issues. Parasites, and endocrine diseases are some of the most common culprits. Allergies can be caused by environmental irritants, like pollen or household cleaners, or by certain foods. Like mites or fleas, can cause irritation leading to hair loss. Endocrine diseases are caused by a disruption of hormones in the body, leading to hair loss. There are steps you can take to prevent hair loss in your Frenchie. Make sure to keep them away from allergens, keep them up-to-date on flea and tick treatments, and have your veterinarian regularly check for any signs of endocrine disease. You should also keep an eye out for any signs of irritation or itchiness, as these can be telltale signs of a potential problem. Catching hair loss early can help prevent it from becoming a bigger issue. Allergies Allergies are a common cause of hair loss in French Bulldogs. Dogs can be allergic to food ingredients, inhaled allergens, and even contact allergens. If your Frenchie has an allergic reaction, they can experience skin irritation, hair loss, and excessive scratching. To tell if they have an allergy, look out for symptoms such as red and inflamed skin, excessive scratching and biting, and bald patches in the fur. If your Frenchie has any of these symptoms, it would be a good idea to take them to the vet to find out the cause and get the right treatment. Try to keep your pup away from any potential allergens such as dust, pollen, and smoke. You should also make sure that your Frenchie is on a healthy diet as this can help prevent allergies. This can involve changing their diet, using topical treatments, or taking medication. French Bulldogs can suffer from a wide range of allergies that can cause hair loss. Common environmental allergies that can cause hair loss in French Bulldogs include dust mites, mold, and pollen. Food allergies, such as wheat and corn, can also cause hair loss in French Bulldogs. You can tell if your Frenchie has an allergy if you notice that he or she scratches excessively or is losing patches or clumps of hair. A vet can test your Frenchie for specific allergies. Parasites can also cause hair loss in French Bulldogs. Common parasites include fleas and ticks, which feed off of the blood of your Frenchie. An infestation of fleas and ticks can cause your Frenchie to lose patches of hair. If you find any, take your Frenchie to the vet to be checked. Endocrine diseases such as hypothyroidism can also cause hair loss in French Bulldogs. If your Frenchie has an endocrine disease, they may lose patches of hair, have dry and flaky skin, or have an abnormally slow heartbeat. A blood test can determine if your Frenchie has an endocrine disease. If your Frenchie is diagnosed with one, they may need to take medication or supplements to control the symptoms. Look out for common signs of allergies in your Frenchie, such as persistent scratching, redness, dry and itchy skin, hair loss, and hives. Pay attention to any changes in their behavior, attitude, and appetite. If your Frenchie seems uncomfortable, off its food, or is avoiding certain places or objects, they may have an allergy. Keep an eye out for changes in their environment or diet, as these could be causing an allergic reaction. If you see any of these signs, you should visit your vet to get your pooch checked out as soon as possible. Parasites Parasites are one of the most common causes of hair loss in French Bulldogs. Ticks, and mites are the most common parasites that can cause hair loss in your Frenchie. The best way to tell if your dog has parasites is to inspect their coat for any signs of flea dirt or bites, as well as to check for any unusual skin irritation or scratching. You should also keep your Frenchie up to date on their flea and tick preventative treatments, as well as perform regular checkups with a veterinarian. If you think that your Frenchie might have parasites, the best thing to do is to take them to the veterinarian for a diagnosis. Your vet will be able to determine if your dog has any parasites, as well as what type of parasite they might have. They may also recommend certain treatments, such as flea and tick preventatives or other medications, to help get rid of the parasites. Regularly inspect their coat, keep them up to date on parasite preventatives, and take them to the vet if you suspect they have parasites. These steps can help ensure that your Frenchie stays healthy and happy, and that their hair loss is kept to a minimum. Parasites such as fleas, ticks, and mites can cause your French Bulldog to experience hair loss. While fleas are the most common, ticks and mites can also be a culprit. When fleas bite your Frenchie, it can cause them to scratch and pull out their hair. If you notice your Frenchie scratching more than normal and see bumps or red patches on their skins, they may have a parasite. To check for parasites, you should inspect your dog, paying close attention to the skin around their neck, head, ears, and back. You should also feel for any bumps or irregular patches of fur. If you find any signs of parasites, you should take your Frenchie to the vet as soon as possible. See also Can Bulldogs Climb Stairs? And How to Train to Climb! The vet may recommend a medication or shampoo to help get rid of the parasites and prevent further hair loss. Taking preventive measures can also help to keep your French Bulldog healthy and free of parasites. Ensuring your dog gets adequate exercise and a balanced diet can go a long way in keeping them healthy and free of parasites. The most common way to determine if your French Bulldog has parasites is to take it to the vet for a physical examination. During the examination, the vet will look for signs of parasites, such as fleas, ticks, and mites. They may also draw blood to test for worms or other parasites. If your Frenchie has parasites, the vet will usually prescribe medication to treat them. If you notice bald spots, scabs or dry patches, or if your Frenchie has excessive scratching or licking of their skin, these can all be signs of parasites. If you think your Frenchie has parasites, you should take them to the vet right away. If any parasites are found, the vet will be able to recommend the appropriate treatment for your Frenchie. Endocrine Diseases Endocrine diseases can cause hair loss in French Bulldogs, just like allergies and parasites can. Look out for excessive drinking, frequent urination, weight loss, poor coat condition, and thinning hair. Any of these signs should be reported to your vet immediately. Both of these diseases can cause hair loss in French Bulldogs, though there are other issues that could also be at play. Keeping your pup groomed regularly and bathed frequently with a hypoallergenic shampoo can help keep allergies and parasites at bay. If you suspect your Frenchie might have an allergy or parasite, take them to the vet right away to get the right treatment and help prevent further hair loss. Endocrine diseases can cause significant hair loss in French Bulldogs. To tell if your Frenchie has an endocrine disease, look for physical symptoms such as dry and flaky skin, thinning fur, and excessive shedding. Other common symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, and heat intolerance. Take your pup to the vet for regular checkups and blood tests. Blood tests can tell you if your Frenchie has an endocrine disorder. This is enough to prevent endocrine diseases and hair loss. Avoid exposing your Frenchie to environmental factors or toxins that can trigger allergies or skin problems. You should look out for symptoms such as weight loss, excessive urination and thirst, skin changes, and changes in behavior. With proper care and attention, you can help ensure your Frenchie stays healthy and happy. Prevention Prevention is key when it comes to keeping your French Bulldog healthy and happy. One way you can reduce the risk of hair loss in your Frenchie is to stay on top of flea and tick prevention. Regularly check your pup for any signs of parasites and, if necessary, consult your vet for the best treatment option. Keep an eye out for any allergies your French Bulldog may develop. If you notice any signs of hair loss, it could be due to an allergic reaction. In this case, your vet may recommend an antihistamine to help alleviate the symptoms. With regular vet visits and a careful eye, you can help prevent hair loss in your French Bulldog! Preventing hair loss in your French Bulldog is an important part of responsible pet ownership. You can take steps to reduce the risk of your Frenchie developing this issue. Regularly check your pet for any signs of parasites or other conditions that could cause hair loss. If you find any, take your pet to the vet right away so they can be treated. Be sure to feed your Frenchie a healthy diet that includes essential vitamins and nutrients. This will help keep their coat and skin in optimal condition. Keep your Frenchie away from any substances that may cause allergies. Taking these preventative measures can go a long way in helping to prevent hair loss in your French Bulldog. Conclusion Preventing hair loss in your French Bulldog is fairly simple if you stay on top of it. Parasites, and endocrine diseases are all possible culprits. If you suspect your Frenchie has an allergy, talk to your vet to get an allergy test or skin patch test. To tackle parasites, work with your vet to determine the best medication. Your Frenchie will receive oral antibiotics, a topical cream, and a special shampoo — and get better real soon. This area is easily irritated and prone to bleeding. However, you must address the behavioral and psychological causes of this condition, too. It can be over-production or under-production of a particular hormone, such as estrogen, testosterone, or thyroxin. In such cases, a dog can have dull, thinning hair or an unusual smell or color of the skin. These infections can be: Parasitic Fungal These infections are often caused by an immune system disorder. The most common infection in dogs is called folliculitis. The treatment should address the underlying causes as well as relieve the symptoms. The latter is generally achieved through the application of topical creams and antimicrobial shampoos. Being highly contagious, ringworm is a common occurrence, as well. Dogs commonly pick the ringworm up while digging in the dirt — especially if they already have a minor injury on their paws or head. The condition is treated with an anti-fungal shampoo and topical medications. It usually takes a couple of weeks. Important Note About Hair Loss Treatment If you think your French Bulldog might have any of the listed conditions, visit a vet for a proper diagnosis and timely treatment. Do not try to treat any medical conditions on your own! Once you get the correct treatment course from a licensed vet, be sure to follow through with it. If left untreated, some of these conditions could even be fatal. Final words Frenchies have a short, fine coat that they shed a couple of times a year. Regular grooming and brushing can help, though. Luckily, this is regular seasonal hair loss — and thus, no cause for concern. As for problematic, out-of-the-ordinary hair loss, you must address it as soon as possible. If you notice any patches and bald spots in isolated areas, take your dog to the vet immediately. The sooner you start treatment, the less room there is for complications. When not writing, he enjoys hiking and time in nature with his pets. But just like any other furry friend, they also shed. Dogs normally shed hair to get rid of extra or damaged hair and to cool down during the summer months. However, if you notice that your Frenchie is shedding more hair than usual, they might be suffering from a skin condition. Is it normal for a French Bulldog to lose hair? As I mentioned in the intro, hair loss is a common process for all dog breeds as they shed. Why is my French Bulldog losing hair? There are several different reasons as to why a French Bulldog loses hair. Here are the primary ones: Food irritants — know what you are feeding your dog all the time and avoid foods that may cause allergies. Environmental irritants — pollens and other airborne irritants can cause skin conditions for Frenchies. Hot spot or acute moist dermatitis — a condition that is common to all canines but especially Frenchies who develop moisture in their skin folds. Chronic dry skin — caused by too much bathing. Dandruff — hair dandruff caused by allergens inside your house. Skin allergies due to food and environmental irritants are the most common reasons why French Bulldogs lose hair. You will know if your Frenchie is having an allergy issue if they start licking or chewing their paws constantly, rubbing their face for no reason on the ground, or scratching non-stop at their ears Because of the folds in their skin especially on the lower jaw, French Bulldogs also develop lip-fold pyoderma, a bacteria, and yeast infection due to the constant moistness in the folded area. A severe lip-fold pyoderma can cause their skin to redden and it can spread and lead to hair loss. To reduce the chance of hair loss on your French Bulldog, give your furry friend these three things — routine care , good diet , and enough exercise. Routine care — Treat your Frenchie like your own child. Be sure to brush their hair regularly, check their wrinkles for moisture or yeast infections, and keep them away from typical food or environmental irritants as much as possible. Good diet — Feed your French Bulldog a lean diet which is free from typical food irritants that cause allergies. If they are acting strange and scratching their skin constantly, check with your veterinarian. Wrapping up There is no need to wait for your dog to start having hot spots and dry patches before visiting a veterinarian. If you think your French Bulldog is shedding more hair than usual and has been vigorously scratching, start checking for possible causes. If you are not feeding it anything out of the ordinary, check the environment your pup is playing in. Pin 0 Shares All breeds of dog shed their hair, and even short-haired breeds like Frenchies can shed a lot, more so depending on the time of year. I put these notes together for you to act as a primer before you talk to the vet — which of course, you should do any time you notice hair loss patches and unusual bald spots on your Frenchie. I will explain in as a helpful a way as possible all I know about French Bulldog hair loss and what I have learned about Frenchie alopecia. Why is my French Bulldog losing so much hair? Once you rule that out, you can then explore the possibility of bald spots and alopecia due to entirely different reasons. You can see what it looks like in a video on our French Bulldog YouTube channel. Why Frenchies lose their hair by shedding Frenchies will lose their undercoat hair about twice a year; replacing their thinner or thicker coats for summer or wintertime. However, if your Frenchie is losing more hair than is normal, then it could be a sign of a skin condition , allergies or another medical condition. The bottom line is, you should always talk to your vet for a professional opinion, but there are some tell-tale signs that your Frenchie is losing hair for a different reason. It could be that you see bald patches and bald spots that were not there before? But why is your French Bulldog losing so much hair? Is there anything wrong? And is there anything you can do about it? There are many reasons your French Bulldog could be suffering from hair loss, all of which a vet would check for during an appointment. These include: 1. Allergies Like humans, Frenchies can also suffer from a range of allergies to different materials, environmental factors, or food. This can lead to skin irritations, causing them to scratch , bite and chewing on their fur, leading to hair loss. Common allergies include plastic and latex materials, dyeing agents, cleaning products, plants, antibiotics or certain ingredients in types of dog food. Acute moist dermatitis is often caused by moisture and dampness in folds of skin, especially around the neck area. You might see your French Bulldog losing hair on sides of the mouth and neck area bald spots. Mange Mange can be a scary word for many Frenchie owners, conjuring images or scabbed and furless dogs, but it is actually quite a common condition, being highly contagious between dogs. Sarcoptic mange or canine scabies is the most common of the two and is highly contagious. It causes intense itching and, as a result of scratching, dogs suffer open sores, scabs and hair loss. The good news is, that mange is easily treated using oral antibiotics and topical creams and shampoos. Your vet will be able to diagnose mange within seconds of seeing your Frenchie, hair loss being one of the obvious signs. Stress related hair loss When a dog is anxious, restless or just bored, they can find a release of some of that excess energy through licking themselves and things around them. Handy Hint: Often Frenchies will create bald patches due to licking when stressed with separation anxiety. Often found on the lower parts of their legs, it results in a red patch of furless skin, which can often become irritated or even begin to bleed. If you see French Bulldog alopecia on their flanks, this is what the hair loss could be. The dermatitis and infection can be treated with antibiotics, anti-lick strips and topical medicines, whilst the behavioral and psychological cause can be helped through training, more interaction with the animal and longer walks to relieve their excess energy. Hormones Just like humans, Frenchies can suffer from hormonal imbalances, such as the over-production or under-production of oestrogen, testosterone, thyroxin or other hormones, which can cause hair loss among other symptoms. One of the most common causes, however, is hypothyroidism, caused through a malfunction in the canine thyroid gland; this can be treated with an oral hormone replacement medication, such as thyroxine. Hormonal imbalances can result in hair loss patches and bald spots on areas such as the back, tail, around the mouth, sides of the body, and around the eyes. Abnormal organ functions While it is rarer, other things that causes hair loss in French Bulldogs can be problems with their internal organs, such as kidneys, liver, and intestines. Health issues like bowel disease, kidney failure, and liver failure can cause dull, thinning hair liver failure also causing orange-yellow skin, and kidney failure is accompanied by a musty smell to their coats. Bacterial infection French Bulldogs can also lose their hair due to parasitic infections like as ringworm, or bacterial and fungal infections like folliculitis. Sometimes caused by previously mentioned forms of dermatitis and immune system disorders, folliculitis shows itself through a collection of red swellings around the hair follicles but can be treated with topical creams and antimicrobial shampoos as well as treatment to any underlying cause. Ringworm appears in lesions on the head, ears, and paws of a dog, and if often picked up when your dog is digging around in the dirt where the fungus resides. Ringworm is easily tested for and can be treated with an anti-fungal shampoo and topical medication over the course of a couple of weeks. If you are concerned that your dog may have any of the above conditions or are just worried about possible causes of French Bulldog hair loss, always visit your vet for a proper, medical opinion and diagnosis before taking any steps to treating your pet yourself. How to treat hair loss in a French Bulldog Some of these conditions, when left untreated, can cause harm to your Frenchie. In more serious cases, hair loss can often be the sign of a fatal disease so needs to be checked out by a professional. Once you have a diagnosis from a licensed vet, they will often prescribe a medical hair loss treatment for your Frenchie, ranging from topical creams and hydrocortisone shampoos to hormone treatment and antibiotics. Change their diet If your Frenchie has an allergy to a particular ingredient in dog food, then the obvious remedy is to change what you are feeding them. Natural topical remedies There are some common kitchen ingredients that you might already have that can help relieve the itching from dry skin conditions. By relieving the itching, you can reduce the hair loss and bald patches from scratching and licking. Some dog owners say lemon juice helps. It contains anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties, as does apple cider vinegar, which can also help to boost the immune system. To use it, simply dilute the lemon juice or vinegar in warm water, before dipping a cotton ball into the mixture and applying it to the affected bald patch. Regular brushing will help to keep the hair healthy and could lead to a reduction in how much hair your French Bulldog loses each day. Use a humidifier Room humidifiers can really help a dog with dry and itchy skin, meaning less scratching, thus reduced hair loss. More about French Bulldog bald spots French bulldogs with hair loss behind ears Mites are a common cause of hair loss in Frenchies, even those with shorter fur, and one of the common symptoms of a mite or tick infestation in your dog is fur loss behind their ears. Ear mites are an extremely common and highly contagious species of mite in cats and dogs, causing scabbed skin around the back of their ears, as well as lesions from your pet constantly scratching to relieve the itching sensation. These open wounds can also lead to bacterial infections, resulting in crusting and discharge of pus, which may have to be treated separately. It is important that the mite infestation is treated, as it is the root cause. Once the mites have been got rid of, the scratching and skin lesions will often resolve themselves with a little topical treatment. After a few weeks you might then see the hair loss behind the ears grow back to what it used to be before the mites took hold. However, it can also be a sign of allergies. Often, allergies or skin issues can begin around the eyes and ears of your dog, before spreading outwards around the body. Common signs of discomfort around their eyes include rubbing their faces against things, excessive scratching of a particular area, eye-watering, sneezing and a runny nose. If your Frenchie is losing patches of hair around their eyes, be sure to check for any open sores and raw skin which can be a sign of dermatitis , as well as lesions and scaly skin in localized areas a symptom of ringworm. The definition of French Bulldog alopecia While it may sound like a terrible skin condition, alopecia is actually just the name for seasonal baldness. Often found in breeds of French, American and British Bulldogs, this type of hair loss is completely natural and is caused by changes in the seasons. Shorter periods of sunlight during the day triggers their hormones to regrow their fur into a thicker coat, ready for the approach of winter, and then back again for a thinner summer coat. Because of this, French Bulldog baldness and hair loss does not result in any skin conditions, dryness or itching, and is purely just a change in outward appearance and over time the hair will grow back. When seasonal baldness comes into effect, you may notice these bald patches are far darker than the rest of their skin, resulting from hyperpigmentation. This is usually seen around their flanks and hind legs, but after a while, the hair will regrow and cover the area. Conclusion Despite Frenchies only having a very short, fine coat and only losing their undercoat a couple of times a year, they do produce a lot of hair. This will often be mistaken for problematic hair loss — which instead is typically when you see patches and bald spots in isolated areas rather than uniform hair loss with natural shedding.

The range of amounts is based on the activity of your Golden for the day, either low, moderate, or high level of activity. Golden Retrievers should have scheduled times to eat daily. The scheduled times will help them with their energy levels and keep them healthy. You can schedule their eating times as to what works best for your schedule. For example, feeding them before you leave for work and then when you get home. As a puppy, they will eat three times a day, so you will need to find times in those first few months to feed them more often. When they are an adult or senior, the scheduling of feeding times will be easier because they will only eat twice daily. For a Golden Retriever puppy, the best feeding schedule is once in the morning, noontime, and in the evening. For example, you could feed their first meal at am, lunch at noon, then dinner at pm. Planning their mealtimes around your mealtimes will often make it easier for you and the puppy. Make sure to give them plenty of time after eating to got to the bathroom a couple of times before heading to bed. Hopefully, this will help them sleep for a longer period. After about six months, your Golden Retriever can go down to two daily feedings. This usually occurs once in the morning and once in the evening. They can usually last about 12 hours between meals. If it goes past 12 hours, they could become nauseated. Golden Retrievers can experience food allergies often caused from proteins in dairy or meat products. If your dog experiences symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, or itching they may have a food allergy. They warn that feeding dogs any raw animal-source protein could cause illness because it has not gone through a process to remove harmful pathogens. However, a raw diet can be healthy if you are willing to go through the extra cleaning processes of the meat. This is a lot of work and difficult to do correctly and safely. We do not recommend it without expert veterinary help. Before starting a raw diet with your Golden, be sure to consult a veterinarian. Find one that is familiar with raw foods and can help with the proper handling of the foods. If you work hard to make sure your homemade foods are rich in the vitamins and minerals that a dog needs, then it might work for your Golden Retriever. It takes a lot more time to find recipes and make sure it has all the nutritional value of a store-bought dog food. If you are willing to research expertly formulated recipes internet is making it easier to do this , and take the time to cook for your golden then go for it! Consulting your veterinarian is a must before starting any homemade diet. A veterinary nutritionist should also review your plan before starting. Feeding your Golden Retriever table food is not the best practice but a small amount of dog healthy table food is fine. Some example table foods that are healthy for them are carrots, blueberries and plain yogurt. Just be aware that feeding them too much table food can throw their entire diet out of whack. They may not be getting enough vitamins and minerals like they do from their dog food. Conclusion Making sure your Golden Retriever is getting the right foods at the right amounts will help them live their best life. There are many choices of foods with all the right ingredients. Be sure to choose one that works best for you and your Golden. Consult with your veterinarian on which food will bring the most nutritional value to the health of your Golden Retriever. If your Golden is experiencing any health issues related to changing foods, visit your veterinarian. If this article was helpful, please consider sharing this post on Facebook with the button below! You now have a beautiful, smart, and loyal dog who will love you for life. To make sure they grow into a healthy and happy companion, you need to feed them the right amount of food. At months old, which is usually when they are ready to leave their mother, a golden retriever puppy should be eating 3 cups of dog food divided into three meals per day. This is based on a typical large-breed puppy food. Different brands will give a feeding guide on their packaging. However, how much and how often to feed your golden retriever will keep changing during this time of rapid growth. Golden Retriever Puppy Feeding Timeline Image Credit: PxHere All puppies are different as are the foods, but some general guidelines for feeding your golden retriever during their first year are: 0—6 weeks: A golden retriever puppy can start eating solid food when they are 3—4 weeks old. Give them a total of 3 cups of dog food per day by their third month, 3 to 4 cups by the time they are 6 months old. The AKC recommends waiting until large breed puppies are at least 12 months old before switching them over to adult dog food and more likely 18 months. The amount will depend on their weight and activity level, but a rough guide is 1—2 cups per meal. Image Credit: Kinek00, Shutterstock Large breed puppies like golden retrievers should eat three to four small meals a day for the first 3—6 months of their lives. Smaller portions spread throughout the day are easier on their tummies and help prevent bloat, a serious condition that can be deadly for dogs. It also helps them maintain their energy level throughout the day. Puppy food has more calories and fat to support their growth, as well as extra vitamins and minerals for their developing immune and nervous systems and bones. The protein source matters, too. Puppies need animal-based proteins like chicken, beef, or lamb for their growing muscles. Choose a Large Breed Formula: Large breed puppies grow quickly, which means they need extra support for their bones and joints. Formulations for large breeds contain the correct calcium and phosphorus ratio for strong bones and glucosamine and chondroitin for healthy joints. They can help you choose the right food for your puppy based on their age, weight, and activity level. But puppies need to be fed on a schedule to prevent them from overeating and becoming overweight. How do you know if your puppy is getting enough to eat? After that, their growth will start to slow down. He Has a Healthy Appetite: A healthy puppy is interested in food and eager to eat. He Has Plenty of Energy: A well-fed puppy is full of energy and ready to play. Make the most of mealtime with these tips: 1. It also helps other aspects of puppy training, such as potty training and crate training. Image Credit: Alena Marchuk, Shutterstock This means leaving food out all day for them to graze on whenever they want. Leave food down for 10 minutes and then pick up what is not eaten. If they have not eaten anything, offer it again in an hour. Slow them down by scattering their kibble around the bowl, using a puzzle feeder or snuffle mat. This will help them learn to eat slowly and enjoy their food more. If your puppy is not drinking enough water for your liking, try adding a bit of broth to their bowl to make it more appealing and help them stay hydrated. Resist the Urge to Sneak Them Table Scraps Puppies are experts at giving those big, soulful eyes that make it hard to say no. But resist the temptation to give them table scraps or human food. Aside from teaching them bad manners, it can also lead to health problems, like obesity. A lot of human foods are not safe or healthy for dogs. For instance, garlic and onions are toxic to dogs. Oily food can upset their stomach, and carbs add a lot of calories. This helps them learn that mealtime is a specific time and place and not something that happens all over the house. Let Your Puppy Eat in Peace. This includes other pets in the house and small children who might want to bother them or try to steal their food. Otherwise, meals can become a stressful experience for your puppy instead of a happy one. Conclusion Feeding your golden retriever puppy the right amount of quality dog food will establish a strong foundation for their health and happiness. In addition, make mealtimes more meaningful by turning them into lessons and bonding moments between you and your dog. The puppy phase is over before you know it, so enjoy it while it lasts! Most first-time owners think their puppies should be chubby. In truth, golden retriever puppies are supposed to look lanky and act like they are always hungry when fed the correct amount of food. To encourage proper growth and development without making your pup obese, you will have to know how much to feed a golden retriever puppy. For example, cheaper foods use fillers and have a smaller amount of calories, thus you will have to feed more than you would when using premium large breed puppy foods. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. We all want our golden retriever puppies to be healthy and happy. We envision them running through a verdant field chasing a ball. Full of energy with the beautiful, lustrous golden coat. But, just like us, eating the proper food in the proper amounts will help your golden properly grow and thrive. After all, what we eat impacts how healthy we are. How much you should feed your golden retriever puppy will vary depending on the quality of food you feed, his age, his weight, his general health, and his activity level. Your golden will be growing for up to two years. And the amount of food during that time will have to be adjusted depending on his needs. Because most people feed kibble to their pup, this article will focus on that. Kibble is convenient and cost effective. Instead, they should be lanky and full of energy. They should love to eat their food with gusto. Instead, you should be able to feel his ribs when you pet him there. There should just be a thin coating of fat under his skin. And he should have a defined waistline. Of course you should check with your veterinarian to make such adjustments. And remember a young puppy should get only so much exercise a day. Their joints and bones are developing and can be damaged if the exercise is too extreme. Assuming you have an eight-week-old puppy, he should receive three to four meals a day. From eight weeks old until about five or six months old, three meals per day are advisable. Of course, feed at the same intervals every day and split the total amount per day in half to be given at each feeding. After about six months of age through adulthood, two feedings per day are the norm. Always check with your vet regarding how much and how often to feed. These are just guidelines. Feed him at the same distraction-free location so that he focuses on eating. As much as goldens love to eat, a young golden puppy is also very easily distracted. This can lead to possible health problems, including joint and bone problems. Goldens can easily become overweight. Free feeding can also lead to a picky eater. Some puppies figure out that if their buffets are always there, and they can just go graze at will. Most foods you purchase will have guidelines on their bag or box. When you first get your puppy, feed him the same food that the breeder or rescue fed him for a few weeks. Then, if you want to change his food, do so over at least 10 days. Add more of the new food and subtract more of the old food each day. After about five days, you should be giving him approximately 50 percent of the new food and 50 percent of the old food. Switching food over such a period of time will help prevent stomach upsets and diarrhea. Overfeeding will result not only in him becoming overweight but it will also make him grow too fast. Periodically—even weekly— test whether you can still feel his ribs without them protruding. You can then increase the amount he eats. You should also feed his last meal of the day at least 90 minutes before his bed time so that he can digest his food and potty before bed. A well-balanced, high-quality food should provide all the nutrients he requires. Golden puppies require a formula made for large-breed dogs. Puppy formulas for large-breed dogs regulate their growth. Eating too quickly can lead to digestive upsets and even bloat, which can be deadly. I rescued my golden retriever Riley when he was about six months old. To say that he ate as if it were his last meal would be an understatement. He had a voracious appetite. I bought one of the maze bowls to slow him down. The kibble is placed between each section of the bowl, and he had to forage for his food. It worked! He ate at a more normal pace. Of course, dogs should be given free access to fresh water. Other Feeding Options Although I concentrated in this article on feeding kibble to your new puppy, there are other options. There are some drawbacks to them because they may not be nutritionally complete, may be cost prohibitive, or may be too time-consuming to make. Wet Food Canned food alone or mixed with kibble is an option. But wet food alone is very expensive. He may become a picky eater. Feeding raw is controversial. Dehydrated raw foods reduce some of the risks. The ratio of calcium to phosphorous is crucial to puppy development. Homemade Diet Cooking for your best friend can be very appealing. And many people do. You know what ingredients and their quality are. But it has its drawbacks. Of course, the amount you feed is important for his growth rate and general health and well-being. But there is no one-size-fits-all in determining how much to feed a golden retriever puppy. Any amounts you see are just guidelines. Adjust them as necessary regarding your own special puppy. Do you have a golden retriever puppy? How did you determine what and how much to feed him? Please leave your comments in the section below. Helps ease anxiety in their new home. They are famously loving and playful family pets, always eager to jump in the pool or snuggle up with you on the lounge. They are patient and energetic dogs who are easy to train, making them excellent service animals as well as loyal companions. If you are bringing a Goldie into your family, you might also be aware of their reputation as food lovers. Your Goldie might want to eat anything and everything you put in their bowl — and maybe even anything left on an unattended plate. In this Golden Retriever feeding guide, Hypro Premium will take you through everything you need to know when it comes to food options for your pup. The best food for most young puppies is milk. If you are weaning a puppy, you can start to mix in a little dry kibble with their puppy milk to create a paste. You can feed this mix to your puppy up to four times a day, slowly reducing the amount of milk you mix in. Over time, your Goldie puppy will get more comfortable with solid foods, until you no longer need to include any milk in their diet. While chubby little puppies are cute, your Goldie should not build up too much excess fat once you start feeding them solids. Goldies go from a small 4kg puppy at 7 weeks old to an almost 30 kg adult dog in the space of only 10 months. At six months old your puppy will still be growing, but more slowly as they reach most of their body development milestones. This is why appropriate feeding in the first year of their life is vital to the overall health of your Goldie for years to come. Over time this can increase to up to 4 cups a day at 10 months old, though females should usually only need 3 cups a day. The amount you feed your puppy is often dependent on their size and sex. While they may have some growing left to do, it depends on your dog. Some Goldies will continue to experience growth spurts before their second birthday, while others will stay the same size. Large breeds can be at risk of growing too fast, which can make them more vulnerable to skeletal and weight problems when they get older. Golden retrievers are especially prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, which can be avoided through diet control. You should feed your Goldie between 3 — 4 cups of food per day over two meals. Adult dogs and puppies have different nutritional needs. This is important to take into consideration as you are establishing a feeding schedule for a Golden Retriever puppy. Puppies require more calories to support their rapid growth than adult dogs, but they also have much smaller stomachs, which means they get fuller faster. Because of this, puppies can easily overeat, especially Golden Retrievers. You can help your puppy avoid overeating by allowing them a short amount of time to eat, and then removing their bowl. All puppies grow a lot during their first year, but large breed puppies are more likely to suffer from negative health consequences as a result. In order to provide your Golden Retriever puppy with the most appropriate food to support their rapid growth, consider choosing a large breed puppy food. Goldie puppies need lots of protein, fibre, and fatty acids to support the development of their bodies and provide them with energy. These foods also take into account the difference in nutrient digestion between small and large breeds. Too much of these nutrients can cause your large breed puppy to develop skeletal abnormalities. So how much do you feed a Golden Retriever? Your adult Goldie could need anywhere between and 1, calories per day. The amount of food you feed your dog will be determined by a few important factors. The first thing to consider is the sex of your dog. On average, your male Golden Retriever will need slightly more food than a female dog. Senior dogs will usually be less active and so will need less food. Goldies in particular can have a lot of variation in the amount of food they need on a daily basis. No matter how much you feed your dog, it is ideal that you feed your adult Golden Retriever two meals a day at evenly spaced time intervals. Feeding your dog twice, once in the morning and again in the evening, can be useful for establishing a routine and avoiding overfeeding. This routine can also include exercise, and is useful for encouraging healthy behaviour around food and toilet training. Special Considerations Your Golden Retriever could be predisposed to several health conditions that are important to consider when you make decisions about their diet. Firstly, Golden Retrievers are known for their beautiful coats, but their skin can often become infected. Goldies love swimming, but this can cause problems if water irritates their skin. They can also be susceptible to atopic dermatitis, which causes extreme itchiness, resulting in licking and biting behaviours in dogs that can cause even more damage. For dogs prone to skin and coat issues, a fish-based diet can help alleviate symptoms. Fish contains plenty of fatty acids, which support coat and skin health, and rarely triggers any allergic reaction in dogs. Goldies often benefit from healthy grains in their diet, especially as avoiding them can actually leave your dog more vulnerable to nutritional dilated cardiomyopathy, or nutritional DCM. This heart disease is common in Golden Retrievers, and can be triggered by consuming too much grain-free pet food that contains legumes like lentils and peas. You should consider feeding your Golden Retriever foods that are full of grains and proteins like chicken or fish. These are the benefits and drawbacks of the three most popular options — wet food, a raw food diet, and dry food. Wet food can be a great option for dogs that need plenty of protein and fat, like working dogs or dogs with certain health conditions. It also hydrates your dog while they eat, which can be useful for dogs suffering from any illness. For dogs with highly restrictive diets, raw food prepared by you can be a great way to avoid allergens. You can have complete control over a raw diet, which does require a lot more work on your part, but can have great results. For instance, a Golden Retriever with heart issues should eat a low salt diet, which can be easier to achieve if you are preparing their meals from scratch. However, low quality kibbles tend to be made up of a lot of low quality fillers, which can be hard for your pup to digest. Whatever option you choose for your Goldie, make sure it is suitable for large breeds and contains high quality ingredients. This will help prevent degenerative health disorders in the long run. Your Golden Retriever will probably love food, and will probably try to eat anything you put in front of them, which means you need to help them avoid the negative consequences of overeating. Golden retrievers, like other large and active breeds, need plenty of exercise. Not only is this vital to their physical health, but it also ensures they grow up well socialised and mentally stimulated. As your Goldie grows from a puppy to an adult dog, the amount of meals they need a day will reduce as their digestive systems become more developed. Your dog will need two meals a day, once in the evening and once in the morning, from the age of 6 months. There is also info on how to keep your puppy and your adult at his or her optimum weight. Scroll down to find growth charts to make sure your puppy is growing at the proper rate and is within the right weight range for his age. If you are looking for information on what to feed, go to How to Choose a Dog Food. Unlike with human children, a puppy that is overfed will grow too fast before they grow too fat. A good example is where a smaller puppy at 10 weeks was overfed and his growth was compared to a puppy that was correctly fed. The growth of your puppy needs to be controlled. General Guidelines for Puppies Below are some general guidelines on how much to feed puppies. Most dog food bags suggest feeding too much. Increase to about 3 cups a day by 5 months for boys and by 6 months for girls. Golden Retrievers at this age are supposed to look lanky and all Golden Retrievers act like they are starving when fed the correct amount. If left to eat as much as they want, they will all grow too fast. In the wild, dogs do not have unlimited access to eat as much as they want. They work for their food. Caloric Needs Greatly Decrease at About a Year When puppies reach about months, their caloric needs begin to decrease. Some males might need 4 cups if active and are fed a less expensive food. Make sure you take into consideration the number of extra calories being fed as treats. You should be able to feel their ribs, but not see them even when the dog is wet. If you can see the ribs, increase their food. Decrease the food if you cannot feel them. I always tell people that it is better to underfeed than to overfeed, especially when feeding puppies. Weight Range Charts Following are charts of how puppies should generally grow in weight. Keep in mind that very few puppies need to be at the top of these ranges and if you cannot feel ribs, your dog is overweight even if she is in this weight range. If your dog is still a puppy and she is over these weight ranges, you are feeding her too much. Female Golden Retriever Weight Chart Here is a chart of how girls should generally grow in weight: 2 Months — pounds.

View fullsize Both our chocolate Labradoodle and our Poodle are beautiful dogs with excellent temperaments. They are our family pets. Because we begin with a Labradoodle and a Poodle, rather than a Lab and a Poodle, our puppies are much more likely to have the non-shedding Poodle coat. A F1b Labradoodle has been back-crossed to a poodle in an effort to insure a non-shedding coat. Even though most f1b Labradoodles shed very little or not all, it is impossible to guarantee that any dog even doodles or purebred poodles will not shed at all. Hypo- means less hypothermia is having a lower than normal body temperature. No dog can be said to be completely non-allergenic. Studies have shown that doodles are less likely to cause allergies, particularly f1b doodles. The ideal is to keep as much of the Lab head shape and super-friendly personality as possible while getting the non-shedding Poodle coat as well as the dignified, less vocal characteristics of the Poodle. Our Labradoodle methodology is quite simple. First, we get quality dogs. This is why we wanted to have pick of the litter for our Labradoodle and our Poodle and why we only obtained puppies from reputable breeders that we knew we could trust. The Australian Labradoodle is different from all other labradoodles In the mids, The Australian Guide Dog Association received an inquiry from a blind lady requesting a guide dog that would not cause her allergies to flare. To achieve a hypoallergenic dog they needed to breed their proven Labradors to a dog that was already non-shedding, hence the Standard Poodle. The resulting Labradoodles subsequently have been bred to each other, continuing the multi-generational tradition without ever having to go back to the parent breed of the Labrador or Poodle. Life Span Did You Know? The Boxer is one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States. It has been recognized by the AKC since .Although the Boxer dog breed originated in Germany, their ancient ancestry can be traced back to the Assyrian empire war dogs of BC. The modern Boxer breed we know and love today was originally developed in Germany in the late s. English-bred Bulldogs and the Bullenbesiier were crossed to create an energetic and agile hunting dog to chase wild game. The Boxer is a popular family companion and a versatile working dog. As a member of the Working Group, Boxers can be found competing in dog sports like agility, obedience, and herding. They also make great service and assistance dogs, as well as therapy dogs, and can be found working as search and rescue dogs, drug detection dogs, police dogs, and military dogs. The Boxer is a muscular and energetic dog that tends to have a happy, friendly disposition. They bond closely with their families and tend to get along well with children and other dogs. They can even do well with other pets despite their high prey drive if they are socialized and trained with them. As long as they are well-socialized, Boxers are generally upbeat, playful, and friendly. Although they have a natural instinct to protect their family from unwanted visitors, they do tend to warm up once introduced and are happy to make a new friend. They can be prone to barking a lot if you do not work on socialization and training your dog to stop barking early on. Boxers can be highly adaptable dogs. Although they have a lot of energy and are better suited to homes with yards where they can run, they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get the daily exercise, attention, and mental stimulation they need. As with any non-arctic dog breed, they are sensitive to very cold temperatures. Boxers are also a brachycephalic breed, which means they are even more sensitive to heat than other dogs. A Boxer is also one of the most affectionate dog breeds. Because they bond so closely with their families and get bored easily, they should not be left alone for long periods of time. Potential health conditions to be aware of in a Boxer include hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, thyroid issues , and heart conditions like aortic stenosis and cardiomyopathy. Good breeding practices make a big difference and reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking the breeder about the health and genetic history of the parents and about any health tests that have been done. Boxers are intelligent dogs that are eager to please their owners. Despite their energetic personality, they are one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners and are highly trainable dogs. In fact, they are known to get along well with children. A properly socialized Boxer will get along with dogs and other household pets, such as cats, but small animals such as rodents or birds may be too tempting. Being energetic and playful, the Boxer can become boisterous and jump on people without proper training and leadership. Boxers need to go on a daily walk and get daily mental and physical exercise. Without it, they can become stressed out. You should start training your Boxer while it is a puppy: Boxers do best with dominant owners who can be firm, consistent and committed. You need to establish yourself as the leader of the pack with this dog breed. Owners who do not establish dominance often find their dogs to be stubborn or demanding which can hamper the owner-pet relationship. Living Conditions As for living arrangements, they can be fine in an apartment if sufficiently exercised even though they are active indoors, but Boxers really do best with an average-sized yard. They are also temperature sensitive, overheating easily and chilling quickly. Boxers have a natural tendency to protect their owners and home, and although visitors who the dog recognizes are not seen as a threat, will protect their owners if they sense danger. Boxers are courageous which makes them great watchdogs and will even restrain intruders. It is important to know Boxer puppies require human leadership and need to be taught not to be boisterous or jump up on people. It requires very little grooming. Brush it with a rubber curry brush once or twice a week to keep it looking good. The Boxer tends to be a clean breed only occasionally needing a bath. Origin The name Boxer is thought to come from the way they use their front paws for just about everything; pawing at its food bowls, toys, and even its owner in a playful way. The Boxer was developed in Germany in the 19th century and its ancestors were two German mastiff-type breeds. They were later bred with the ancestors of the Mastiff and Bulldog. Boxers were first used for dog-fighting, bull-baiting, cart pulling, cattle dogs, rounding up livestock, and to catch and pin wild boar and bison until hunters could arrive. Later they became popular theater and circus dogs. There are two types of Boxers: the German and the American Boxer. German Boxers have bigger heads and are generally more muscular than American Boxers. See store for details on a puppy. The American Canine Association, Inc. The American Canine Registry.

If the dog is a puppy, then it is better to get smaller treats, which are great for training, but if the dog is a full-grown adult, it is better to have something sized larger to prevent choking hazards. Reason For Treats When buying a treat for a dog, it is advised to keep in mind how they treat will be used. Grain-free treats are an excellent option for Goldendoodles as they provide a source of healthy fats, proteins, and other essential nutrients without any grains. They are also often easier to digest than regular treats with grains, which can be beneficial for Goldendoodles who have sensitive stomachs or food allergies. Training rewards: The best treats to use for training rewards are high-value treats. After all, who wants to be stuck eating the same things day in and day out? Even the tastiest of foods lose their appeal if you have too much. Your pup will likely appreciate a little variety in their treats as much as you do, so try to mix things up a bit. Many brands stock multiple flavors, so when you find one you and your dog are happy with, get it in every kind. Switching out textures as well as flavors is also a good idea for keeping things fresh. mini boxer puppies - Bernedoodles are a carefully-bred combination of Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles. Bernese Mountain Dogs, originating from Switzerland, were first used for driving cattle and to protect farmyards. They are robust and powerful, renowned for their ability to pull many times their own weight. This history creates the image of a hardy, strong worker, yet their owners know them best for their placid, sweet nature. They are also large dogs known for shedding lots of hair. The Poodle is a small dog that is non-shedding, but is known for being more high-strung. They are known and loved for their intelligence and prancing nature. When we cross-breed, the result is generally an intelligent puppy who is a gentle, sociable, enthusiastic companion. They are gentle with babies and toddlers, yet energetic enough to play in the yard with teenagers. They are also sensitive to the elderly, which makes this dog perfect for any family! The Mini Bernedoodle is a very dedicated dog, and does not like being left alone for long periods of time. This makes this dog well-suited for homes with plenty of activity, or for those who have someone in the house most of the day. They are generally very tolerant of other pets. With the energy they have, this dog will be perfect for your hiking or jogging companion. A good rule is to exercise them 5 minutes for every month of their age. For example, a 4 month old puppy will be able to take a 20 minute walk without tiring him out. We work hard to socialize and train our puppies to be well-mannered and obedient. In spite of this, they may still have some behaviour issues if you do not continue training. They will do best with continued guidance and direction.
