how to get a golden retriever puppy to stop biting
Share via Email Poodles are widely recognized for their iconic curly coats, which contribute to their unique and elegant appearance. However, not all poodles possess these distinct curls. In this article, we delve into the intriguing world of poodle fur and explore the reasons behind why certain poodles have straight hair instead of the expected curls. The Diversity of Poodle Coats When we think of poodles, we often envision those adorable, curly-haired canines strutting their stuff in the show ring. But did you know that poodle coats can vary significantly? The breed standard classifies poodle coats into three distinct types: curly, corded, and wavy. These straight-haired poodles, though less common, still possess the same lovable traits and intelligence that poodles are known for. Genetic Factors at Play To understand why some poodles have straight hair, we must consider genetics. However, not all poodles inherit two copies of this gene. Puppies that inherit only one copy or lack the curl gene altogether may develop straight hair instead of curls. The inheritance pattern is complex, and various factors can influence the expression of the curl gene, leading to a diverse range of coat textures within the poodle breed. Curly hair is not present in newborn poodle puppies. During this time, the coat transitions from the soft, fluffy puppy fur to the more mature adult coat. The curls gradually form as the new hair grows in, and it may take several months for the curls to fully develop. While straight hair may not be the norm for poodles, it is a natural and valid variation within the breed. Genetic factors, as well as external influences, contribute to the presence of straight hair in certain poodles. So, whether your poodle has straight hair, long straight hair, or the expected curly coat, embrace their unique beauty. FAQ Can poodles have long straight hair? Yes, poodles can have long straight hair. While the breed is commonly known for its curly coats, some poodles exhibit straight hair as a natural variation. These straight-haired poodles may have long flowing locks that differ from the typical curly appearance. Poodles typically start developing their curls when their adult coat grows in, which usually happens around six to eight months of age. As the soft puppy fur is replaced by the mature adult coat, the curls gradually form. Some may have more defined curls earlier, while others may take longer for their curls to fully develop. When does poodle hair transition from straight to curly? The presence of straight or curly hair in poodles is primarily determined by their genetics. What is the best food for my poodle? What is the best food for your dog? The three foods that are super healthy and that almost every dog loves, even the pickiest dogs, are: 1. There are a number of fresh frozen dog foods available on the market and I tested them all. You can see the fresh frozen food test here. Why does my poodle have straight hair? The poodle is a popular breed of dog that is known for its curly coat. However, not all poodles have curly hair. Some poodles have straight hair, and this can be due to a number of factors. One reason why some poodles have straight hair is because they are mixed with another breed of dog that has straight hair. For example, the labradoodle is a popular mix between a poodle and a Labrador retriever. This mix often results in a dog with straighter hair, as the Labrador retriever has a straight or wavy coat. Another reason why some poodles have straight hair is because they have a straighter coat. This is often seen in Standard Poodles, as their coat is not as curly as the coats of other poodle varieties. Standard Poodles can also have a wavy coat, but this is not as common. Some poodles may also have straight hair due to genetics. If both parents have straighter coats, then their puppies are more likely to inherit this trait. Additionally, adults with straighter coats are more likely to produce offspring with straighter coats. Are poodles born with straight hair? Poodle coats can be either straight or curly, but most poodles are born with straight hair. The coat of a poodle pup will usually start to shed and curl as they reach adulthood. Poodles are born with a soft puppy coat that will eventually turn into their adult coat. The type of coat a poodle has is determined by their dog breed. Poodles can be either Standard, Miniature, or Toy. Standard poodles have the heaviest coat, while Toy poodles have the lightest coat. Poodles are born with a straight or wavy coat, but as they mature, their coat will gradually become more curly. Toy and miniature poodles will usually have a wavy coat, while standard poodles will have a curly coat. Puppies typically shed their baby coats around six to eight months of age. This is when their adult coats start to come in. The new coat may be wavy or curly, depending on the type of poodle. Toy and miniature poodles usually have a wavy coat, while standard poodles have a curly coat. Some poodles have fluffy coats while others have very tight curls. The type of coat your poodle has is determined by genetics and cannot be changed. Can toy poodles have straight hair? Toy poodles can have straight hair, but it is not common. Most toy and miniature poodles have curly or wavy hair. Standard poodles can have either straight or curly hair. The adult coat of a toy poodle may be either straight or curly, but the coat of a miniature poodle is usually wavy. Toy and miniature poodles may have their coats trimmed to look like they have straight hair, but the hair will usually return to its natural state within a few months of age. Poodles have a very thick coat that does not tangle easily. If you use hair straighteners on them, you may cause their coat to become frizzy and dry. Can Poodles have Naturally Straight Hair? Poodles are known for their curly hair, but did you know that some poodles can have naturally straight hair? While most poodles have curly hair, there is a small percentage of poodles that are born with straight hair. Doodle puppies are often mistaken for golden retriever or labrador puppies at first glance because of their straighter coat. However, as the pup grows older, their coat will begin to form tight curls around the head and body, giving them that signature poodle look. Some doodles may have more of a curl than others, while some may have fluffy, straighter hair. No matter what type of coat your doodle has, they will always need to be groomed to keep their hair looking its best. The coat may become more curly or even kinky in texture. Some poodles will have very curly hair, while others will have only a slight curl. Puppies usually have a softer, fluffier coat that may change in texture and appearance as they mature. Poodles with their curly hair are the cutest. However, owners do sometimes wish they were easier to brush. So can Poodles have straight hair? Poodles love to be groomed, and when you are running a brush through their hair, it can be very rewarding to see a toothy smile on their face. However, because of their curly hair, Poodles can be a chore to brush. Can Poodles Have Straight Hair? All Poodles have naturally curly hair. A Poodle puppy has straight hair up till it achieves full maturity. However, pureblood Poodles will all attain curly locks in a few years. Some mixed breeds may have straight hair, known as an improper coat. If you are a dog lover and are looking for a Poodle with straight hair, I can tell you that there is no such pure breed. I can help you understand the type of coats a Poodle has and when Poodle puppies start to get curly hair. I can help you understand how to appreciate the curly hair of your Poodle more. Do you know that a Poodle is a water dog breed? This is the reason why they have bouncy curls, unlike the vast majority of dogs that have straight coats. Poodles were bred specifically to have tight curls because they would help protect them from the cold temperature of the water. Originally, Poodles were used as hunting dogs. Over time, people realized these water dogs were highly intelligent and hence Poodles started working in a variety of fields, including sailing, seafaring, and military. Hence, they were used for a variety of purposes like retrieving goose, fowls, and other game birds shot by hunters, retrieving objects that have fallen overboard, and passing messages between ships. Since they are so smart and have curly hair, they are at the top of the list of working dogs. Poodles only have a single layer of coat that keeps them warm, unlike most dogs that have a top coat and an undercoat of fur. The coat of an adult Poodle is thick, curly, and dense and has a cotton candy or fluffy cloud-like appearance. However, it is quite wiry to the touch. This is because this coat was designed to help the pooch repel water and help in its role as a water retriever. The dense, curly hair prevents the water from reaching their skin and keeps them warm in cold waters. The fancy haircut that Poodles are famous for was not originally just for show. Although some of us think that these cuts make the pooch look silly, they actually have a practical application. Since Poodles have thick and curly hair, it can get quite heavy when wet, which can slow down the dog in the water. Today, the Poodle is still used as a working dog by people in many fields so that haircut has stayed on. However, it is more popularly known as the look for a show dog. Types of Poodle Hair Although adult Poodles are supposed to have curly and wiry hair, you will find that many Poodles have different hair. Puppy Coat After Poodles are born, they will have a straight puppy coat. This hair will be thin, wispy, and very soft but will grow thicker and curlier as the puppy ages. Typically, your Poodle will have a puppy coat till it is around 12 months old and sometimes even longer than that. Curly Coat As the Poodle transitions to adulthood, its coat will become dense, wiry, and curly that covers it from top to bottom. This coat is non-shedding and hence considered hypoallergenic. However, a Poodle will shed a few hairs once in a while, so it is important to keep its coat brushed and groomed so that it does not become matted. Improper Coat An improper coat is a Poodle coat that has a straight or somewhat wavy texture. Every Poodle should have two variations of the chromosome that results in a thick and curly coat. However, improper breeding when breeders fail to test their canines that carry only one of these chromosomes can lead to a somewhat straight coat or a patchy coat with wavy patches. This process is genetic and can be passed down to the puppies as well. In this case, the Poodle will have a coat that resembles the coat of a Poodle puppy. Although there could be waves and curls on their coat, the Poodles will lack the denseness and the tightness of the curls that people appreciate in pure Poodles. Good breeders eliminate the non-curling chromosome from the breeding process and ensure that every Poodle inherits and exhibits the perfect characteristics of evenly curled hair as well as check the Poodle for coat patterns or hereditary illnesses. If you have a Poodle, you may be wondering when its hair would grow curly. Typically, Toy and Mini Poodles will start their transition from their smooth coat to a curly coat from the age of 9 months and will achieve a perfectly curly coat by the time they are 18 to 24 months old. Standard Poodles will also start getting curly hair at the age of 9 months but they will get a full coat of curls by the time they are 1 year old. They will also need daily brushing if you want to keep their coat long since the soft puppy coat will tangle with dense and wiry curls if not groomed properly. Once the adult coat has fully developed, your puppy will no longer shed its hair as much as other straight-coat breeds. Not all Poodles you see have curly hair. Since the Poodle is a popular breed, there are several unscrupulous breeders who are reproducing Poodles without checking or understanding the breed standard or performing health tests on the Poodle. I understand that you will love your Poodle, no matter the type of coat it has, but it is just as important to consider that they are healthy and have the right temperament so that they can become a part of your family for a long time. English Saddle clip Continental clip A poodle can have any of the above hair types or some combination of them. Read on to find out more about the different types of poodle hair. Types of Poodle Hair Explained There are many types of poodle hair that you can find on poodles, and these different hairstyles are dependent on the grooming practices used as well as the age and breeding stock that the dog comes from. This hair type starts out as super soft, thin, wispy, and straight, but begins to grow curly and denser around the base as the pup grows older. Curly Coat Once a poodle transitions out of its puppy coat, it develops a thick curly hair type that covers the entire dog from head to toe. This coat is non-shedding and hypoallergenic; while poodles are well-known for their lack of shedding, this also means that their curly coat needs constant maintenance to avoid matting. Corded Coat Another hair type seen less commonly in poodles but commonly seen in other water dogs, such as the Portuguese water dog , is the corded coat. Improper Coat Unfortunately, due to a lack of careful selection during breeding, many poodles that are kept as companion animals rather than show dogs exhibit an improper coat, at least with regard to the breed standard. Improper coats are not curly throughout and will often exhibit soft waves in patches or across the entire dog. Improper coats are easier to brush, but a fault in the show. This kind of hairstyle is practical for pet poodles but is also the only cut permissible in a competitive show for any poodle under twelve months of age. English Saddle Clip An English saddle clip on a poodle is what most people think of when they imagine a fancy cartoon poodle—legs, tail, and chest cut into elaborate pom-poms, with shaved sections in between each ball of hair. This hairstyle was much more popular in the mid-twentieth century than it is today when puppy clips are more popular outside of dog shows. The clip has also lost popularity in dog shows, as it is not flattering to many dogs and is said to disguise the lines of the dog, making it a less attractive choice during judging. The English saddle clip is generally considered to be a poor choice for soft-coated dogs. Continental Clip A Continental clip is a similar hairstyle on a poodle to an English saddle clip, with the major difference being how the rear legs and back are cut. In an English saddle clip, the rear legs are cut into a series of pom-poms, whereas in the Continental clip, these sections are shaved. A Continental clip, like an English saddle clip, can be very difficult to maintain. Check out this article I recently wrote on 25 haircuts for poodles. Poodles and Hypoallergenic Hair One of the major advantages of poodles is that their hair is hypoallergenic, which means that it does not tend to cause problems for most people who have dog allergies. This makes poodles a good pet choice for anyone who wants a dog but is susceptible to the sniffles and leaky eyes around them. If you are on a budget, it may be more economical to purchase an allergy kit from Amazon. My favorite is the 5Strands deluxe tester. With this test kit, you can easily test for any pet-related allergies you may have. Check it out here on Amazon for more information and current pricing. While many dogs such as golden retrievers have a double coat, which is comprised of a soft undercoat that is protected by an outer layer of guard hairs, poodles only have a single coat. The biggest difference between the two coat types is that single-coated dogs do not shed and are considered hypoallergenic. Double-coated dogs tend to shed throughout the season and are a bane for those with allergies since their shedding also results in a lot of lost dander that tends to cause allergies to act up. Does Poodle Hair Stop Growing? In most cases, this is a very undesirable outcome. This coat type can be seen in other water dogs, too, such as the Portuguese water dog. But to make sure that the cords are presentable for exhibition, groomers will train them for a uniform appearance. Problems with Poodle Hair Despite the fact that it is hypoallergenic and lovely to look at, poodle hair comes with its own particular set of grooming and health problems. The hair of poodles has a tendency to thin and fall out, especially in female dogs that are going through heat or other hormonal surges. Here are some other common issues with poodle hair: Alopecia X: This is a balding condition caused by growth hormone deficiencies during the transition to adulthood in poodles and can cause loss of hair along both sides of the body. Luckily this is strictly a cosmetic issue for poodles generally caused by poor breeding practices and does not cause any other health problems. Allergies: Like many purebred dogs that have enjoyed an immense amount of popularity, some poodle breeding lines have developed a series of allergies to things like food and shampoos that affect the skin, eyes, and hair. Excessive itchiness can cause a poodle to scratch its own hair out eventually, and even form sores and hot spots. Sebaceous Adenitis: Like alopecia X, this is a hereditary disease of poodles and other breeds that are caused by poor breeding practices. Neutering is the recommended treatment or spaying, as the condition can show up in females too. The main cause of matting on a poodle is not brushing a poodle correctly or often enough. The cure for matting is to work the mat out with a proper grooming tool and brush the dog properly or more often going forward to avoid the formation of new mats. Matting can become severe if not addressed early on, and if matting becomes too serious, the only option is to cut the mass of hair off the poodle entirely or shave it down to the skin in the area where the mat is located. Obviously, for show coats, this can be extremely detrimental. The best preventative to avoid mats is to set up a strict and regular grooming schedule for your poodle. As long as a poodle is brushed regularly, their coats are not that much more difficult to manage than many other breeds of dog. Once a puppy is used to the process of being brushed, it will be much easier to train the poodle to stand still, and the process of brushing becomes a much quicker and more enjoyable process. The easiest way to regularly brush a poodle is to train it to stand and stay on a table. Training dogs to give a paw readily can be helpful for simplifying this process, as many dogs are naturally reluctant to let anyone handle their feet. Teaching the poodle to respond to simple positioning commands can be very useful in accomplishing this. The more careful you are in grooming the dog, the more trust you will build up and the less reluctant the dog will be to get brushed. As you work, spray each section with a conditioning spray to reduce potential tangles. Note: This is especially important on darker-colored poodles, such as black or chocolate poodles, since fleas and ticks will not show up as readily against their hair as in lighter-colored dogs. Be sure to talk calmly to the poodle throughout this process and offer treats when they are behaving correctly, as this will encourage good behavior in the future. Once the coat is brushed out, the poodle can then be bathed. If you own a poodle pup, you may encounter some special challenges when it comes to grooming. I wrote a comprehensive guide all about how to groom your Poodle puppy. Check it out here. Home Grooming vs. Professional Grooming Many people are intimidated by the grooming of poodles and assume that to keep a poodle looking good, they have to be professionally groomed much more often than the average dog. The downside is that it takes a bit of practice grooming a poodle in order to do it well. Since a poodle is years of commitment and professional grooming can cost thousands of dollars over the course of its life, it can be a financial good investment to learn how to groom your poodle early on. Plus, it also acts as a good bonding activity. Bathing Poodle Hair In order to maintain a good coat condition, poodles should ideally be bathed approximately once every three weeks. Too much bathing can also irritate the skin or make existing skin irritations worse. I recently wrote this article on how to properly give your poodle a bath. Poodle Hair: Fussy but Not Complicated While poodle hair can be somewhat fussy to deal with compared to a smooth-haired breed of dog like a hound, these majestic dogs can be easily maintained with just a few tools and some regular brushing. Consistent brushing is the key, not fancy tools or professional grooming. I hope you found it helpful. Is it Dangerous to Straighten a Poodles Hair? Can Poodles have Naturally Straight Hair? Yes, he can actually but only while he is a puppy. As your pup gets older his coat will start to change and develop tight curls around the base. The coat becomes a little difficult to manage at this stage and this is the ideal time for him to have his first full groom rather than just a puppy trim. Why does my Poodle have Straight Hair? These genes prevent the keratin in the hair from binding in the normal way and results in curly hair. This gene is dominant and as such a dog only needs one copy of the curl gene to exhibit curly or wavy hair think Doodle, a retriever does not carry the curl gene, but a Poodle does so F1 Doodles have one copy of the curl gene and all Poodles SHOULD carry two copies of this gene. I say SHOULD because unfortunately, due to lack of genetic testing when selecting dogs to be bred from, some Poodles around only carry one copy of the curl gene. The coat is in this situation stays similar to the Poodle puppy coat and although there may still be waves or curls the coat will lack the density and tight curls that we desire in our Poodles. There are many beautiful breeds of dogs around with coat types to suit everyone. However, I have heard people say they have seen a beautiful Poodle with straight hair on a few occasions. Usually, this is a case of mistaken identity and they have actually seen an Afghan Hound who with his long, pointed nose, long legs, and graceful movement could perhaps be seen as similar looking. There is a downside to curly coats though and that is the fact that they take a lot of hard work to keep tangle-free. As anyone who has curly hair themselves will tell you, curly hair tangles and can be difficult to brush and if you choose to own a Poodle you will need to spend time every day combing his coat right through to the skin. He will also require clipping, either at home or the salon at least every eight weeks. When a groomer clips a Poodle, he needs the hair to be straight to achieve a neat finish and when you collect your Poodle after his appointment you will see his coat is less curly and looks fluffier than usual. Read on to find out why this is! Fluff drying is used by groomers to achieve an even cut and give the beautiful velvety finish the coat needs to be blown straight. It is also a very useful technique to learn yourself at home as a fluff-dried coat is much easier to comb and get tangle-free. I fluff dry my Poodle and Doodles every day after their walk before I groom them even if they not wet. The most important tool you need is a force dryer, also known as a blaster. This takes a little practice but is not difficult once you get the hang of it. Work on a section of coat at a time and aiming the nozzle towards the root of the hair blow the coat in the direction it grows. You will need a pin brush or slicker to help you here and brush in the same direction that you are blowing the hair whilst keeping the air stream steady. Remember to keep the power on low for delicate areas. Continue all over until the hair is dry and straight. As a finishing touch, you need to comb your pet all over using a metal comb. If your Poodle is still not straight enough you can spritz the coat lightly using water in a spray bottle and repeat. Fluff drying your Poodles coat is not dangerous if done carefully but you must take care to keep the power and heat low on sensitive areas such as the face and ears. You should also be careful and always blast with the hair to avoid knots. Get yourself a blaster dryer and enjoy safely grooming your Poodle. We recommend this blaster from Amazon.

Tips for Choosing Reputable Breeders Breeding dogs , as well as other animals commonly kept as pets, can be profitable, leading to a rise in inhumane puppy mills. These high-volume dog breeding facilities churn out litters for profit, often ignoring the needs of the parents and puppies. In many cases, the puppies that come from puppy mills are unsocialized and suffer behavioral and emotional problems and health conditions. The facilities are poor, leaving puppies in extreme conditions in wire cages. The mother dogs are often found covered in filth with sagging nipples, crusted eyes, and parasites. When you research breeders, look for small operations with limited litters. Puppies should come with genetic health clearances, veterinary records, and vaccinations. Most puppies from breeders will be registered with limited breeding rights, meaning that your puppy will not be registered as a suitable breeding dog with the governing organization. All of us have different characteristics which we find more important than others. Every reason I list, however, is important to the childhood of your son or daughter. Furthermore, telling a dog to sit, and then watching the dog do what he was told, provides children with tons of confidence. The mother was imported from Finland and the father was imported from Poland, both from top show kennels within their respective countries. Both parents are stunning examples of the breed and can be seen. They conform with the breed standard, and both come from a long line of standard champions and health tested dogs. A lot of research and effort went into importing the parents of these exceptional puppies and we are so lucky to now have them as part of our family. They have the best temperaments one could wish for, very friendly with that breed typical clownesque nature. Puppies have been cherished since birth, so much care and attention has gone into their upbringing, by way of nutrition, handling and socialisation, no expense was spared to ensure the best start for them. Currently there is one male and one female available and are already displaying excellent character with big ambitions to lead a mischievous life. They are IKC registered with pedigree, vet checked, wormed, microchipped and have received their first vaccinations. If you are looking for a new addition to your family, I would be happy to have a chat with you about the possibility of reserving a pup. No private numbers will be answered and please no time wasters. Thanks for looking. Life Span Did You Know? While the name of this breed is the French Bulldog, their origins cannot be credited to only France. One of the facts about French Bulldogs is that the idea and reason for the creation of the breed originated in England. This adorable dog breed, which has always been meant to be a companion, started as a miniature version of the English Bulldog. This mini-version accompanied lace workers across the English Channel and into France during the Industrial Revolution. Once the dog breed became prominent in France, the subsequent successful crossbreeding of the English Bulldog, Pug, and Terrier led to the creation of the modern-day Frenchie. The French Bulldog we know today originally came to the United States with groups of wealthy Americans who came across them and fell in love while touring Europe in the late s. The French Bulldog was recognized by the American Kennel Club in and is a member of the non-sporting group. The French Bulldog is an easygoing, affectionate, and playful dog that loves their family and gets along well with children. They also love to make new friends, which means they get along well with other dogs, animals, and people. Intelligent and affectionate, this small dog breed certainly wins over hearts and earns its status as a popular companion dog. Frenchies are not known to bark much, unless you train them into it, but they are naturally alert and make excellent watchdogs. As long as they are well-socialized and trained, they tend to have an open and friendly nature. The Frenchie is a highly adaptable dog that pretty much adapts to any living situation that includes plenty of love and attention. Being a short-snouted, snub-nosed dog breed, they do not tolerate heat very well and are also sensitive to cold. This tends to make them one of the dog breeds that hate winter and you will want to make sure to bundle them up to stay warm while out on cold winter walks. Because Frenchies bond closely with their families and thrive on attention from them, they do not tolerate long periods of time alone. They can also be prone to developing separation anxiety if they are poorly socialized or you do not work with them on this when they are young. Potential health concerns to be aware of in French Bulldogs can include cataracts, cherry eye, and entropion. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances. Heart and joint certifications are recommended for this breed. Playful and happy, the French Bulldog is a great fit for a novice dog owner. They are sweet-tempered, eager to please, and eager to train. Occasionally, Frenchies can be stubborn and they do tend to have big personalities. Although this can sometimes be a challenge for first-time dog owners, it can usually be overcome with consistent and patient training. Puppy training classes are always an option and offer plenty of benefits aside from training. Standard coat colors for Frenchies are Brindle, Cream, Fawn, and combinations of these. They have a short coat that will shed a little year-round. Nail trims once or twice a month keep nails from growing too long and causing issues. Weekly ear checks, along with careful cleanings as needed, can help prevent ear infections. As a small dog breed, the Frenchie is more prone to developing gum disease. Daily dental care plus cleanings at the vet as needed can help prevent this and other painful dental diseases later in life. You will also need to take care of the wrinkles. Frenchies have hereditary face wrinkles and it is important to keep them clean and dry to prevent skin irritation or possible infection. The French Bulldog is an easygoing companion breed. They can be one of the laziest dog breeds that are couch potatoes. Frenchies will often be energetic when they play and will try to match their activity to yours. So, if you live a more active lifestyle, you need to be careful that your French Bulldog is not overexerting themselves trying to keep up with you. As a Brachycephalic or snub-nosed dog, they cannot cool themselves as easily and are extra sensitive to heat. They can also get winded easily, so be aware of this when playing with your dog or puppy and watch for signs of overexertion. There are safe ways to exercise flat-faced dogs and you can work with your vet on specifics for your Frenchie if needed. French Bulldogs usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Frenchies generally live for years on average. With this dog breed being so popular, there are plenty of celebrities who have chosen the French Bulldog as their companion, which also means there are plenty of famous Frenchies out there. Also, French Bulldogs cannot swim, at least without a life vest. They can be taught to swim while wearing one, but they should never be left unattended around bodies of water or swimming pools and require constant supervision while in the water. Breeders VS. The sad truth is that many pet store purchased pups actually come from puppy mills. Basically, there is zero authenticity with pet stores. When it comes to adopting any animal from a pet store, there is an increased risk of unforeseen health or genetic problems. You also cultivate a life-long relationship with the breeder, meaning support is available to you anytime you may need it. With My Golden Retriever Puppies , you have the option to come and visit both the puppy and the breeder in person! Golden Retrievers are an adaptable breed, meaning they are better at adapting to seasonal changes and various types of climate than certain other breeds. Goldens sport a double-coat, which ensures that these sweet pups are able to tolerate slightly colder temperatures than their friends from other breeds. Your pup deserves better than that, which is why here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we ensure high-quality care is taken of your pet at all times. For more about the true price of a golden retriever puppy, you can read our full price breakdown here. Location Information for Florida Customers Our home office is located in Ohio, but we understand that long-distance travel can be inconvenient. If you prefer to meet a breeder in person, they may be able to offer private visits at their home. Of course! Here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we value family and authenticity, which is why we always guarantee our pups through our 2-year genetic health guarantee. Like adopting a Golden Retriever from a pet store, there is an increased risk when adopting a pup from a rescue center or shelter as well. For example, pups purchased through a shelter or rescue center are far less likely to come with the kinds of health guarantees and reassurances that a breeder can provide. Australian Labradoodles are dogs that have a very interesting history. They were first bred in the s by a member of the Australian Guide Dog Association who set out to produce a hypo-allergenic guide dog, for a blind woman who was allergic to dogs. They can be considered to be six in one, as six different breeds were used to create what I believe is the ultimate dog. They are gentle, smart, loving, playful and obedient. An extra bonus is that they have an allergy friendly coat and do not shed! Tootsie is a cuddly and very loving dog who adores children. She is very intelligent and has proved easy to train. Her gentle temperament means her puppies will be perfect for first time dog owners! She is an exceptionally pretty dog with a gorgeous thick and curly coat. The rescue was conducted by the Utah Animal Advocacy Foundation. Between July and September, Korb and other volunteers with the rescue organization made five separate round trips to eastern Nevada to transport the pugs to Utah. Many of the puppies were infected with parvovirus and required immediate treatment leading to expensive emergency veterinary bills. Her foster situation turned into a forever home. The other foster dog in her care has been adopted and will soon be united with its new family. Thanks to the rescue and the volunteers, these pugs have a new outlook. UAAF finds homes for roughly animals every year. She hopes situations like this will inspire more people to use the rescue and adoption route when searching for a family pet. She was one of 26 Pugs rescued on Independence Day in .Toy lived in a wire cage and was bred time and time again, and she did not receive any veterinary care. Toy has skin issues and calloused, webbed feet from standing on wire flooring her entire life, and she has permanent back and hip arthritis. She is now receiving cold laser therapy to help with the pain. She also has a collapsed trachea which was not addressed at the time, and she has severe glaucoma. Even in puppy mills licensed by the U. Department of Agriculture, standards of care are notoriously low. Current federal regulations are so weak, and enforcement is so poor that breeders can keep dogs constantly caged and deny access to regular exercise, socialization and even adequate vet care. The truth is most breeding females do not end up in a loving home once their bodies give out. Their puppies are also prone to a host of lifelong, expensive medical and behavioral problems. Puppy mill operators care more about profits than dogs. All dogs deserve the good life—but as long as the secretive puppy-breeding industry continues to hide the truth, too many dogs will remain victims of its cruelty. Other Ways to Help:. Videos and Cams Pug rescued from puppy mill had the best life Pug rescued from puppy mill shows signs of serious neglect, but she is adopted and her life changes dramatically for the better. By Christelle L. Del Prete December 4, Piper the pug had been through a lot by the time she was rescued from a puppy mill in .But the best chapter of her life started when she came to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. Brandy and Piper were together nearly 10 years. When Piper passed away in mid-November, she was believed to be 19 years old. Although she lived a charmed life as a pampered pet after her rescue, she also became an ambassador for pet rescue, adoption, senior pets and rescuing puppy mill dogs. What is a puppy mill? A puppy mill is a dog breeding facility where dogs live in small cages and female dogs are bred as frequently as possible. Dog mills in the U. Puppy mill puppies are also sold on websites and through classified ads. Many people unknowingly buy puppies who have genetic disorders or who may be sick because of poor conditions in puppy mills. Meanwhile, millions of healthy, loving dogs of all ages are available for adoption at shelters and rescue organizations around the country. She was extremely underweight and missing most of her fur. Her skin was irritated and in rough shape. Since she was not well-socialized, she was also quite unsure about people. But all that was about to change. Brandy, a southern Utah resident, was volunteering at Dogtown when Piper along with other rescued puppy mill dogs were brought in. Piper ran up to me and asked me to pick her up. But Piper was so sweet and calm they took right to her. She instantly became part of the family. In the beginning, Brandy carried her around in a baby pouch and let her down when she felt safe. Together, they walked all over town and met as many people and friendly dogs as possible. As Piper gained healthy weight and confidence, she began riding in a stroller and then she began walking on her own, with Brandy picking her up only when she seemed overwhelmed. Brandy and Piper logged countless miles on their daily walks and took some epic road trips. Piper moved from Utah to California to St. Louis with Brandy, and everywhere they went they helped to spread awareness about animal welfare. Piper could change minds and hearts. Because of their special bond, the cat began cuddling on the couch with her and Brandy. She survived cancer and came through major dental surgery with flying colors. Besides some age-related arthritis and eyesight issues, Piper had slowed down but was going strong until recently, when she began having lung and breathing issues. As hard as it was to let her go, their life together was more than Brandy had ever hoped for. Both of our lives have forever been changed through this journey. Save Them All Stay in touch with the animals via email updates, as they get second chances at happy homes. Email Address. Many times these animals are in deplorable physical condition: parasite-ridden, underweight, bred nearly to death. Most have rarely been out of their small, cramped cages. They may have eye infections, missing orbs or vision impairment caused by ammonia from urine-soaked quarters. Some have torn, deformed ears and missing limbs from cage aggression. Females may have hernias from painful, extended labor. Their toes may be splayed from walking on wire floors. Many have tattooed ears. Some have numbers hung around their necks on chains that have grown into their flesh. Their dental state is invariably horrible; most will have painful, infected teeth and gums, some resulting in systemic infections. These are animals who've endured years of torture to make money for uncaring humans. When a reputable rescuer gets her hands on a puppymill survivor, providing medical attention is just the beginning. The physical damage can be staggering. The psychological damage is much worse. It takes a very special adopter to accept and love a puppymill survivor. Rehabilitation of the puppymill survivor begins with rescue, but can only be completed by a committed, loving family. The purpose of this article is to help demystify some of the acquired behaviors of the puppymill dog, and to let the adopter know what to expect. Common Puppymill Survivor Behaviors Terror of humans hands: The only time most mill dogs are removed from their cages, it's a painful experience. The dog may be grabbed by the first reachable part of it's body: tail, leg, scruff, ears. This takes lots of patience and non-threatening touches to overcome. You may have to lie on the floor face down with your eyes averted to get the dog to approach you at all. Let him come near you and sniff. It may take an hour, or days for this to happen. You can sometimes begin by holding the dog, petting him gently for a few seconds, speaking softly, then place him carefully down. Let him know you do not wish to restrain him. Lengthen the time for this ritual each day. Never raise your voice, clap your hands, or allow loud noises in the home during this adjustment period. You must strive to create a totally non-threatening environment. Behave as submissively as possible. Build trust slowly. Aversion To Eye Contact: Many puppymill survivors refuse to make eye contact with humans. This indicates fearful submission which decreases as the dog comes to realize he will not be harmed by you and begins to trust. Talking to your dog in a soft, calm voice helps speed the process. A dog may not speak English, but the gentle tone of your voice and the fact that he is the focus of your concern will be understood. The "I'm Afraid Of My Food" Routine: Anytime the cage door is opened on a mill dog, fear is the response, because an evil human is behind it. Of course, the cage door must be opened to insert a bowl of food, which may also be used to entice the dog within reach. It's not unusual to see your puppymill survivor run in the opposite direction when you sit dinner on the floor. Turn your back and walk away until the dog feels "safe" enough to eat. Let him eat undisturbed. Some never grasp the finer points. Most males will mark, and many females, too. Crates are useful in housetraining. Belly bands a cloth band which wraps around male dogs covering the ureter will help prevent marking. Nicely fitted doggie diapers are available from Foster and Smith. Human diapers can also be used - just cut a hole for the tail. Put your dog on a schedule. Take him outside first thing in the morning, at lunchtime whenever possible, after dinner, before bedtime. If you see him lift his leg in the house, a shaker can jar filled with small pebbles or clicker can distract him long enough for you to get him outside. Never raise your voice. Never hit a dog. Take him outside and reinforce by saying, "Potty outside", or something similar. Use positive reinforcement when the dog does his business outside.Potty outside! Good, good boy! Never take your dog outside a securely fenced yard until you are thoroughly bonded. Then if you take your dog outside the fence, double-check to be sure harness is secure enough. I sometimes use a collar and harness, then run the lead from the collar through the harness for extra safety. If a mill dog gets loose outside a secured area, he will likely run until he drops; catching him will be quite a feat. Prevention is by far the best policy. Coprophagy: Stool-eating is common in puppymill survivors. There is much contention as to the cause. However, most rescuers feel it is a learned behavior. Again, prevention is the best policy. Pick up the yard frequently. Some mill dogs stop this behavior over time. Fear of Water: Many puppymill survivors are frightened of water hoses. Puppymillers generally don't bother removing the dogs before hosing down their cages. I have known adopters whose puppymill survivors have become well-acclimated to homes, families and leashed walks only to have the dog bolt when they chanced by a neighbor watering his lawn. Fear Biting: Fear biting is more common in abuse cases than in puppymill survivors, but we do see it occasionally. Puppymill survivors, like feral dogs, usually cower in the presence of humans. Fear biting can frequently be overcome with proper training and commitment, but it generally requires a professional animal behaviorist, not to mention a strong commitment from the adoptive family. Sadly, because of both the enormity of the canine overpopulation problem and the abundance of more easily salvageable dogs, most fear biters are euthanized. These are a few of the most common puppymill survivor behaviors and suggestions for working with them. Working with a puppymill survivor is not an easy undertaking. But for those of us who have witnessed the miracle of these frightened beings growing to love and trust, to play with toys for the first time, to learn to take soft beds and good food for granted, it is one of the most joyful and rewarding experiences of our lives. The puppymill survivor who ventures to trust a human being despite a history of cruelty and neglect is a triumph of the spirit from which we can all learn. WhatsApp Three of the pug puppies rescued from the puppy mill. Photo courtesy of UAAF via Facebook A Utah animal rescue organization is flooded with adoption applications after a rescuing 40 pugs from a puppy mill in Nevada. After a volunteer for The Utah Animal Advocacy Foundation expressed concern about an unethical breeding situation in Nevada, the UAAF coordinated with volunteers as well as the breeders to find a resolution that could bring the pugs to safety. The pugs were brought to Utah, where they were placed in foster homes to await adoption. Maryjo Korb from UAAF said the dogs were kept in a dirt enclosure with chain link fences, and several had lice. After the rescue, a few puppies were born but died shortly after from genetic problems caused by inbreeding. Of the six puppies with parvovirus, only one survived. Additionally, prospective dog buyers can look for puppies registered through the American Kennel Club, ask for medical backgrounds and visit the breeders to make sure the dogs are being treated well, Hamilton said. Humane Education Adopting a Puppy Mill Rescue Dog Puppy mills are essentially large-scale dog breeding factories, where the dogs are typically housed under deplorable conditions, living in overcrowded, soiled cages with wire floors. Inadequate veterinary care, food, water, physical and psychological stimulation e. Females are bred continuously until they no longer can reproduce, at which point they are often killed. The puppies are taken from the mother between 6 and 8 weeks of age, and are sold to pet shops or sold over the Internet. To the puppy mill owner, profit, not the welfare of the dog, is of utmost importance. Due to the living conditions of these dogs, physical, as well as psychological problems are common. Physical conditions may include heart and kidney disease, visual and hearing impairments, epilepsy, musculoskeletal problems, and respiratory and intestinal disorders just to name a few. Anxiety and fear of humans, and fear of novel situations and objects, due to inadequate exposure during critical periods of development are the most common emotional problems. Puppies removed too young from their mother and littermates, at 6 weeks of age, may also develop behavior problems including aggression. Housetraining the adult dog can be a challenge given their lack of housetraining experience. Leash walking will be a nonexistent skill, and adults in particular will have to learn how to play. Lastly, these dogs tend to be overly sensitive and fearful of handling, including hands reaching toward them to pet them. Some puppy mill rescue dogs will make fantastic strides in their recovery, yet some may never fully overcome the effects of the puppy mill. The recovery process could take months to years because all dogs have different personalities. The recovery of some puppy mill dogs goes faster if there is a resident and confident dog friendly dog in the household. With a lot of patience, persistence, compassion and love, having adopted a puppy mill rescue dog will be an enriching and rewarding experience for the adopter. Preparing for your Newly Adopted Puppy Mill Rescue Dog Purchase the following items: a dog crate that is the appropriate size tall enough for the dog to stand in, long enough for the dog to lie down in. Try a wire and plastic airline crate to determine which one is preferred by the dog. The crate can also protect them, and household items, from destructive chewing and ingestion of potentially dangerous objects. Some dogs may be petrified of any crate, in which case they could be enclosed in a small area blocked off with baby gates. Place the crate, food, water, bedding, and wee wee pads or newspaper on the floor. Be sure to dog-proof the room if your dog is not going to be crated while unsupervised. For the very shy dog, allocate a couple of hours of alone time, peeking in occasionally to make sure your dog is okay. Traveling or having loud parties at this point is not recommended. Hand your dog treats while attaching the leash to the collar to help establish a positive association with the leash, and give some more treats while your dog is walking around wearing the leash. Next, walk around the house holding the leash loosely at first, and then increase the resistance slightly so that your dog feels a bit of tension against the collar or harness. Lastly, walk your dog outside. Always remove the leash if the dog is not supervised. Collars should also be taken off of young puppies when not supervised to avoid accidental choking. Over the course of the next several weeks allow your dog to explore more areas of the house if your dog is interested. Do not push your dog to do anything that will make the dog uncomfortable. Spend quiet time with your dog, perhaps just sitting and reading a book while in the same room. To gain trust, sit and pet your dog while giving the dog some treats. If your dog is uncomfortable being pet, then just try to offer some treats. Introduce new people slowly and individually. Always have special treats for your visitor to offer your dog. Finally, many dogs gain confidence by engaging in basic obedience training.
Because a mix can take on any combination of traits from their parent breeds, you want to make sure you ask about the other parent breed in the mix. Should a Standard Poodle Mix take after their Poodle parent, they will be a loving, loyal, energetic, and playful dog that makes a great addition to a household. Poodles are known for being fantastic family companions. They are upbeat, cheerful, sensitive to their owners, intelligent, and playful. They get along well with children and other dogs. They can have a high prey drive. So, they may need some extra socialization and training with smaller pets in the household. They also have a protective instinct, which makes them initially wary of strangers. But, as long as they have been properly socialized, they will warm up quickly. If the other parent breed has a similar temperament, then you can expect the same in a Standard Poodle Mix. You can also meet the mother in-person to see what behavior she is modeling for her puppies and the manners she is teaching them. The breeder should have started socializing and training puppies. But, once you get them home, it is up to you to continue to train and socialize a puppy so they grow into a well-rounded dog. A Standard Poodle is a highly adaptable dog breed. Although they tend to be better suited to homes with yards where they can run, they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get enough exercise, attention, and mental stimulation. As with any dog breed, a Poodle is sensitive to heat. When temperatures drop, they may need some winter dog products to stay warm. They also do not like to be left alone for long periods of time because they bond so closely with their owners. If the other parent breed is similar, then you should be able to expect a similar adaptability level from a Standard Poodle Mix. But, they may still have some quirks they could introduce, so you want to ask the breeder about them. Just as they could inherit none of the conditions common to their parent breeds, they could also inherit all of them or a combination of them. The other parent will introduce their own potential health concerns, so you want to ask the breeder about them. Reputable breeders will be screening their dogs to make sure they are not passing issues to puppies. So, you should plan to ask about the health history of both of the parents anyway. You can also ask to see test results or clearances from any health evaluations that have been done. Standard Poodles are also one of the dog breeds at a higher risk for bloat. Poodles are intelligent, in-tune with their owners, and eager to please. This makes them a great fit for owners of all experience levels. The other parent breed could make them more difficult to train so you want to ask the breeder about them. If the other parent breed is just as highly trainable, then you can expect a Standard Poodle Mix to be highly trainable as well. They often offer socialization opportunities while also strengthening your bond with your puppy. One of the reasons there are so many Poodle mixes is because of their low-shedding coat. Although a Standard Poodle Mix could inherit the low-shedding Poodle coat, they could also inherit a coat similar to the other parent breed or a coat that is a combination of both. Also, a low-shedding coat does not always mean a low-maintenance coat. Should your Standard Poodle Mix inherit a full Poodle coat, you will need to brush them every day, bathe them occasionally, and get them professionally groomed every weeks. Good dental care for dogs , like brushing teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste daily, helps prevent painful dental diseases later in life. Poodles may have a fashionable reputation, but they are also sturdy and athletic working dogs. They are also high-energy dogs that require a lot of daily exercise and mental stimulation to be happy and healthy. If the other parent breed is also a high-energy dog, then you can expect your Standard Poodle Mix to have high exercise requirements as well. Even if the other parent breed has a lower activity level, you will still need to be prepared for the possibility of a high-energy dog. A fully-grown Standard Poodle usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. The other parent breed can affect this, especially if they are the mother, so make sure you ask the breeder about them. Standard Poodles generally live for years. Although the other parent breed may affect this slightly, you should be able to expect a similar life span in a Standard Poodle Mix. In , the first German Boxer dog named Flocki joined a dog show in Munich. After winning the dog show, he was the first-ever Boxer dog to be listed down in the German Studbook. Miniature boxers are either a product of mating purebred runts or cross-breeding small dogs that have similar characteristics to boxers, such as Boston terriers, pugs, rat terriers, and fox terriers. While some of these minis may closely resemble their larger counterparts, they may not act similarly. Are boxers hypoallergenic? Unfortunately, boxers are not hypoallergenic. What problems do Boxers have? Boxer dogs are brachycephalic, which means they have flat faces. This trait narrows their airway and causes breathing problems. As a result, Boxers should not be out in the sun for a long time as it can lead to heatstroke. Overexercising them must be avoided too to avoid triggering breathing difficulties. How long do Boxer dogs live? The Boxer dog breed has a short lifespan compared to other dogs. He can only live up to 9—10 years, and this is due to the prevalence of health issues in the breed. When buying a Boxer puppy, look for a reputable breeder whose breeding stock and litters are health-screened. This will help you determine how likely is your chosen Boxer puppy going to develop certain health conditions. Albany NY Albany is the capital of the U.
