Indoor allergens, outdoors allergens, or a combination of them may cause dog allergy symptoms. A shepherd dog with any lifestyle can be affected by environmental allergies. Interestingly, it can be quite difficult to find fleas and their evidence on flea allergic patients, due to their intense itchiness on the back end, where fleas can generally be found. While food allergy is less common compared to flea allergy as well as environmental allergy due to pollen, grass and dust mites, it is important to consider any pet with skin problems and signs of intestinal upset, to be a possible for allergic dog. Food allergy may also be seen in combination with other allergies, making identification of the problem more challenging. Ideally, most or all of the offending allergens need to be identified to help ensure good patient comfort. First-time German Shepherd owners are often very surprised to learn that a large breed dog like the German Shepherd can continue growing for 24 to 36 months. An adult German Shepherd dog may weigh anywhere from 50 to 90 pounds and stand anywhere from 22 to 26 inches tall paw pad to shoulder. That is a lot of growth that needs to get done. Isabella This unusual coat color variation is another washout as far the AKC is concerned, which is a shame given how striking it is. It originates from genetically combining liver and blue dilution genes. Like the liver and blue German Shepherd dogs, Isabella GSDs often have unusual eye coloring and different colored noses. Liver German Shepherds will usually have a brown nose. Blue German Shepherds have a blue nose. There is no evidence that the Isabella coloration makes the dog more susceptible to health issues. However, Isabella is a recessive trait. Selecting for recessive traits always limits the gene pool and makes dogs more susceptible to genetic conditions. Grey Not to be confused with the silver, black, or blue German Shepherds, the gray variety look more wolf-like with their dark coats. Some breeders specialize in producing dogs of this unusual color. Silver Similar to the gray German Shepherd, silver is nevertheless recognized as a distinct color. Often grouped together, however, the gray and silver colors are produced by the same genes. Finding a breeder that specializes in silver German Shepherds is a lot easier than finding one that focuses on the grey, so this might be your best bet if you want a more exotic-looking companion. Silver is an uncommon color for GSDs, possibly because it is a recessive gene. Similar to the dilution gene, this gene influences black pigment. While you also get silver sable German Shepherds, the patterned coats mean they are categorized as sable rather than silver. However, silver German Shepherds are often seen in military work or the police force. The red color is the result of the color gene pheomelanin. It can have any shade of red, ranging from strawberry blonde to a deep mahogany red. Alongside black and tan, the black and red combination is preferred over others by German Shepherd breeders. As black and red are both produced by dominant genes, this color combination is easier to breed for, and many breeders focus on producing purebred dogs with deep red coloring. Sable A classic color for the German Shepherd, a sable comes in a variety of colors but each hair sports a black tip. Sable GSDs can be black, gray, red, silver, or tan and are also known as agouti. Agouti is a type of coloring also present in other dogs, like the Agouti Husky. In this coloring each hair has several bands of brown and black, leading to a typical wolf-like coloration. Some founding members of the German Shepherd breed believed this should be the only color present in German Shepherds. Black sables are born as all-black pups and tri-colored sables are born as black and tan puppies. As the puppy ages, their coloring changes. Some GSDs may take as long as three years to develop their final sable coloration. As every sable GSD is different, with the color and pattern both varying, it makes for an eye-catching and unique dog. Sable is a dominant color that is easy to breed for. If you breed a Sable German Shepherd to any other color, you will likely get sable puppies. Black and Silver Much like the black and tan GSD, a black and silver German Shepherd usually has a silver saddle across its back, although the pattern and hue both vary from dog to dog. Like the silver GSD, the black and silver coloration occurs only when the recessive intensity suppression gene is present. This color is not common in the AKC show ring and can mostly be found in working dog lines. Because these dogs are not visible in the dark, it is highly advisable to only walk them on a light-up dog collar in the evenings and at night. Bicolor Bicolor German Shepherds appear almost completely black and, to fit the breed standard, must have black heads, back, legs and tail. Even if their paws are brown, the heels need to be black by the color standard definition. However, the AKC accepts bicolor as a recessive color in the breed. Though technically allowed in the show ring, these dogs are mostly found in working lines. Black and Cream The last official color on our list, the black and cream GSD remains true to its origins as a lighter version of the common red and tan coloring. There is some controversy surrounding the black and cream variation. Most AKC breeders do not want them to participate in the show ring. They strive to breed darker dogs that do not show the light cream coloring. The color does little to change their character, however, and black and cream GSDs excel obedience, nosework, rally and agility and are as loyal and brave as their black and tan cousins. Her DNA proved them wrong, although the Panda coloration remains unrecognized by some kennel clubs and breeders. The Panda GDS is created by a rare genetic mutation. The genes responsible for an all-white body and the patchy white are two different ones. This does not stop them from being popular however! There is a large demand for Panda-colored German Shepherds. Unfortunately, this inflates the price and leads breeders to focus on the color mutation rather than genetic health, so be sure to only source a puppy from a reputable breeder. Albino An albino German Shepherd is incredibly rare. An albino of any species or breed lacks any pigmentation, including of the skin, hair, and eyes as well as the blood vessels, resulting in a pinkish tinge. You can distinguish an albino German Shepherd from a white one by checking his eyes and nose. A White GDS will have some pigmentation resulting in brown eyes, whereas albinos always have red or pink eyes. An Albino GSD, should one exist, may experience other health problems associated with the condition. They may, for example, be photosensitive, requiring protection from direct sunlight. This was the first time we had a chance to chart puppies from birth until 8 weeks old. We tried to take as many pictures as possible so we could have a journal of our Golden Retriever puppy growth week by week. When raising guide and service dog puppies we usually bring home our puppies at around weeks old. On occasion we are allowed to see puppies before 8 weeks of age, but they need to stay with their mother and siblings during those important early weeks to get milk and antibodies from mama and learn how to interact properly with siblings, learning important behaviors like bite inhibition. During our days as a foster we raised two litters of puppies , but both were already weeks old by the time we got them home. We actually own the Puppy Culture DVD and Workbook which includes charts, lists, worksheets and other great information for raising your litter. Keep your eyes and ears open and absorb it all like a sponge! Birth To 1 Week Old Guess what? This was the first litter we ever whelped!? We got a lot of advise, but we were largely on our own. Large Puppy Dish — great for feeding the puppies when they moved to solid food. Whelping Mats — we ordered 2 of these mats and washed them several times a day. Whelping Box — We have a homemade whelping box built by my father-in-law, but if we continue raising litters I plan on purchasing an EZWhelp Whelping Box. Our homemade box lasted three litters. We ended up purchasing the Magnabox which was hellu expensive but if you plan on raising multiple litters we highly recommend it. We recently put together a whelping checklist with all the supplies we gathered together to help out with our second litter of Golden Retriever puppies. Check out our whelping supplies checklist here. However, none were overly huge and none were extra small. No runts and no beasts. It was my understanding that when the cord was chewed down to the base of the belly it was sometimes difficult to get it to stop bleeding. I took the hemostat and pinched the umbilical cord about 2 inches from the base of the pups belly then cut the cord rather than let Raven chew it off. I kept the hemostat on the cord for about 2 minutes to let it clout. The umbilical cord dries up quickly and then within a day or 2 it falls off. Raven was a good mama and took care of her poops. Puppy eyes and ears are closed at this stage and puppies army crawl around the whelping box looking for a teat to suckle. We did everything we could to make sure our pups stayed warm by adding a watt heat lamp to the whelping box and portable heating unit in the puppy room. As I mentioned Raven stayed in the whelping box most of week 1 and of course… the puppy piles! One thing I learned is if I had a puppy on my lap then do not let Raven lick those areas or be prepared for a little accident on your lap. While caring for Raven and her litter Raven was really blowing out her coat that first week, but as time went on it slowed down. I heard from other friends this is common and that Raven blew out her coat much less than other mama dogs. We got Probiotics for Raven before her first litter, but forgot to order them for her second litter. After an upset stomach for the first week or so we realized our mistake, got Probiotics, and no more upset tummy. Week 2 — Pups eyes are opening starting to waddle. Week 3 — First bark! Having More than One Boxer Overview There are a lot of misconceptions and straight-out myths about having two Boxer dogs, or even more. If you are thinking of adding a new Boxer puppy to your home in which you already have an established Boxer or if you are thinking of adopting two at the same time, this article should be provide you with some solid facts to help you make your decision. Reasons to delay adding another Boxer Preparations to make when adding a second dog How to keep both Boxers happy The Pros and Cons of having two Boxers Myths When we were doing some research for this article, we were quite shocked at the myths and misconceptions that are floating around. Some of the most surprising falsehoods that we read were that two Boxers in the same home would be sure to physically fight each other. There is also - apparently - tales that two females cannot live together due to both wanting to exert dominance and some go so far as to advise that two female Boxers may fight to the death. Some say that there may be problems from the beginning and other sources say that this very violent situation will occur when the younger of the two dogs reaches the 2 year mark. Perhaps these sources were thinking of the Akita? The Akita is a breed well known for having very low tolerance for other dogs and particularly of the same gender. Two females or two males will generally not be able to live under the same roof. And while we do not know of any specific instances of the dogs battling to the death, we are fairly certain that any Akita enthusiast already knows to not have more than one dog in the house unless it is a male and female of appropriate ages. Once you have a Boxer, that's it. You're in love and he's won your heart over. He makes life so fun, he's so darn amusing and you can't imagine life without him. It makes perfect sense to add another to your family… You are familiar with the breed and you know what to expect. While two may mean a bit more work, it certainly means twice the love. Sure, the Boxer looks all tough and strong, but inside he's a big child. And that child does not want to be home all alone in your home while you're at work. One of the most common reasons for having more than one Boxer dog is to offer a close companion to the established one. This is not uncommon if a Boxer has Separation Anxiety problems. In some cases, a Boxer may have depression after losing a canine companion or if a human family member has left the house, etc. As long as steps are taken to ensure that they get along well more ahead this usually works out quite well. Homes with two Boxers are often happy homes and the dogs are truly best friends. While this page mainly focuses on the fun and hiccups of having two Boxers, a Boxer can get along well other breeds, including those outside of his size classification. There are some that can do great just about any other breed at all. If there will be big difference is size let's say a toy sized breed , the Boxer should be tested to see how he does with little puppies and dogs. Reasons to Delay Adding another Boxer There are a few things to keep in mind before adding another dog to the home and some steps to take to help make the transition a smooth one. Extreme age gaps makes it harder for the dogs to see each other as 'friends' and the older dog may not want to put up with all the extra noise, activity and chaos for lack of a better word when a new pup is suddenly running all over what used to be a quiet home. In a case like this, we would recommend spending some time working with him on socialization skills either in class or simply by introducing him to other dogs in the park. This way, an otherwise isolated dog can have the chance to prove that he does well with other dogs. It is the canine way more ahead on how to help them with this. But in order for this to happen, both dogs and certainly the one that is already established in the house needs to know that the human s are the true leaders. If your Boxer does not seem to grasp the idea that you are in charge, you'll want to work on that first before bringing another dog into the mix. Never push for playful interaction. That can come later. You will only want to look for tolerance. Once they fall in love and are best friends, two Boxers will often sleep right on top of each other. They will rest together as if they are glued and you'll wonder if they became conjoined twins. Until that time, each dog should have his own sleeping area. In addition, even Boxers that are shadows of each other will most often want their own dining space. If your current Boxer already eats in the available corner of the kitchen, you should move things around so that the 2nd puppy or dog will have his own spot too. How to Keep Both Boxers Happy There is typically a transition time in which the dogs will have to get used to having the other permanently there. While they may have gotten along nicely when meeting, now that they are in the same house, they will be feeling each other out and needing to get a few things straight. Who's the Leader - The most important element touched on above is that while the human must be seen as the one true leader, among the two Boxer dogs, there will also be a leader. One Boxer will be more dominate than the other. It may make sense at first to assume that the established one will be in charge. However this is not always the case. Also, some assume that the male - no matter his age - will take dominance over the female; this is also not always true. In most cases, the Boxer that was there first - and especially if he is older - will be the one. Most dogs will figure this out on their own. There may be a transitional time when one tries to take a toy and the Boxer that really wants to be in charge will put the other in his place with nudging or a snap in the air. Only intervene if it appears it will endanger one of them. With most, there will be a bruised ego and nothing more. For example, if you have a 4 year old male Boxer and are bringing in a one year old female or male ,the 4 year old will take leadership. With two dogs of the same age , it can get a bit tricky. You may or may not notice either stepping forward as they may work it out among themselves. Once you know which dog is the leader, make him be first in regard to any food given, treats handed out, greetings when you enter the house, putting on leashes, and all other elements. Separate Spaces for Twins - Once the issue of hierarchy is complete this usually happens within just a week or two , you will now have two dogs that are inseparable. Despite this, there may be times when they do want their own space. It could be when a female is in heat and is feeling a bit moody… or an older dog may do well with a younger Boxer until he reaches a point of just needing a break. For this reason, have two separate dog beds or other comfortable area for either puppy or dog to retreat to if they wish. Elements to Consider - Possible Cons There are just a few things to keep in mind before you head out to bring another Boxer into your home: 1 Two dogs mean twice the food and twice the care costs. This includes grooming supplies, medications, toys, leashes, vet visits and more. Hopefully owners plan this well in advance and only obtain a second Boxer if there is plenty of room in the budget. Most owners find that once they fall into a good routine, there is plenty of time; but time-stressed individuals may struggle with this.
