The Breeding Season is Underway! Click Here For Litter Listings. Wickersham Farm has Guardian Home opportunities available for some of our up and coming breeding potentials! If you have someone that is home a good part of the day, a fenced yard and are looking for a top-of-the-line companion, contact us for more details. Gideon Wickersham built himself a home that would amaze and intrigue people hundreds of years after he added the finishing touches. In this home, hidden in the little township of East Marlborough, the unique woodwork and craftsmanship is just a facade for the history that lay inside its walls. Gideon Wickersham, the great-grandson of Thomas Wickersham built the Gideon Wickersham farmstead in .Gideon utilized locally available schist and serpentine to create an exceptionally beautiful visual effect on the outside. It is obvious by the fine woodwork on the interior and the exterior that Gideon was a fine craftsman. In , Thomas Wickersham settled in what is now East Marlborough. In , he came to Southern Chester County from Sussex, England, with his second wife and four children from his first marriage. He claimed acres that he had purchased from Humphrey Killingbeck, a relative from his first marriage. William Penn had granted 1, acres to Killingbeck in .The Wickerskams were Quakers. They brought with them certificates of membership from Horsham, England, and were probably the founders of Old Kennett Meeting. Gideon had begun to purchase land for himself in the area of his ancestor in .Written in that deed, Gideon was referred to as a "turner. It is assumed that Gideon learned his woodworking skills from his uncle. Living until the age of 97, Enoch boarded his later years at Gideon's house. Gideon Jr. The house, with double doors, was a popular style exclusively in southeastern Pennsylvania. This double door idea maximized every inch of living space. One door typically led to a formal parlor, while the other led to a functional work area or kitchen. The double door plan worked well both in urban and rural settings. The original house is measured 30' by 30' and faces south. It is built of rough cut local stone, serpentine and schist. These stones, used in equal proportion produce a very dramatic visual effect. The house went through many changes and many owners before it reached its final restoration. As the couple stripped away wallpaper and paint and pulled off a dilapidated Victorian wraparound porch, they uncovered the house, an architectural jewel. The house was soon added to the National Register of Historic Places. It was the nd property in Chester County to be included on the register since it was began in .The style of the house, as previously mentioned, was exclusive to Southern Chester County. It lasted, however, for only first 25 years in the 19th century. There was an addition built on the house. It involved a bathroom, a kitchen, and a greenhouse, and a bedroom upstairs. The present dining room is the original kitchen. As one can see, something as simple as a house can hold rich history, whether it be about the people living in it or its architecture. The Gideon Wickersham Farmstead is the beautiful place that we call "home". Wickersham Farm, Inc. We raise high-quality Mini Labradoodles as well as a few other breeds. BioSensor puppy stimulation The goal is for you to have as much from us with Mommy, Daddy, and siblings scent on their toys and blanket as possible. We want to take the worry out of running around and for you and your family to be able to enjoy the first months bonding with your new baby accident free. During the weeks your furry baby is with us, they are pampered weekly with a full oatmeal baths and blowouts. Along side of nails being clipped, the eyes and ears are cleaned. We like to start them on basic commands. And have them familiar with the term "lets go potty". We start crate training and use pee pee pads by placing them near the back door where they familiarize themselves and associate that area "to go potty". All the "furry babies" that leave us here are considered pre-spoiled and are able to walk on a leash and harness with no problems. One of the biggest assets that we offer is the socialization that your puppy will receive. Not only do they have weekly car rides but exposure to farm animals and the constant interaction with our family cats, dogs, and most importantly lots of children. It will also take time for your baby to get used to your layout of your home, which will be much different than mine. And to be fair to your baby, we ask you NOT allow free feeding all water set out all the time. Otherwise your baby will have accidents since their bladder is very small and still growing. The recommend time for food and water cut off is pm. And be prepared to take them outside to a special designated area for potty at least two more time before they go to sleep for the night. Always make sure a baby will need around 15 minutes after food or water to go potty again. It is common for them to go potty multiple times in one session, especially since they can be easily distracted. You've come to the right place. Welcome to the home of my precious Keweras Golden Retrievers. I hope you will enjoy your visit, and come back regularly to see updates on how all the dogs are doing, and check on the availability of puppies etc. I value your comments and will reply to each and every one I receive. Golden Retrievers are the most wonderful of all creatures, offering kindness, love, loyalty and companionship unconditionally, as only they can. I have many chronic health conditions, and my beloved dogs get me through each and every day with understanding and compassion. Without being able to speak a single word they know when I am suffering badly, and how to comfort me. Because of their wonderful dispositions, Golden Retrievers are ideally suited to families with children, and the disabled, and make wonderful therapy dogs in Nursing and Residential Homes. Many of my dogs are registered P. Pets as Therapy dogs, which also pleases me greatly, and several have gone to homes with autistic children where they are turning the lives of these children around. I am very excited about having this opportunity to show off my most wonderful of friends to the world via my website! I also have a darling girl who has given me two wonderful litters but has now been spayed due to complications with starting her contractions Tehya. To date I have delivered close to Golden Retriever puppies — mostly my own, but several for Goldie owners who have been rather nervous of the impending event, and have asked me to step into the role of midwife for them! These days, however this is no longer possible as getting onto the floor is a major event and requires assistance from my husband, so I only deliver our own puppies, but I am always happy to offer support and advice to anyone, including talking you through a whelping over the phone if necessary — this I have done successfully many times before. I hope always to do whatever is necessary to help the breed in any way I am physically and cognitively able to within my illnesses. I have delivered many other breeds for people in the past in order to ensure, as far as possible, that the pups are delivered safely, and that mum is also safe and well throughout. Syla loves her toys, fetching a ball, having her treats and going for family walks Unfortunately, Syla was not socialized with many other dogs through the pandemic. She is familiar with a small, older, family dog. Due to this, Syla is not great at sharing her toys and food with other dogs. Syla shows territorial behaviour by growling and nipping if a dog comes near her toys and food. Most recently she has shown anxieties towards our youngest daughter who is 7 months. Syla bit our baby who crawled towards her when she was playing with her toy. Besides the above behaviours, Syla has been an amazing family dog. She is so happy, loving and just wants attention all day and night. If you need a hug, she will be the first person to give it to you. She loves her walks so much that she does get excited and pull at the beginning but does eventually calm down. She also loves to swim and catching bubbles with her family. Syla needs an owner who has time to take her for walks, plays with her and loves her unconditionally. She would thrive at a forever home with some land. Her new owner must have patience with her and work with her through her territorial behaviours with her food and toys. Syla would probably do best in a home with no kids or atleast older children. Syla deserves the best family who will treat her like their own child. This is a courtesy listing. This will keep the dog looking good and will ensure that it is a clean and healthy member of your family. All rights reserved. This image may not be used by other entities without the express written consent of wikiHow, Inc. To begin cleaning your goldendoodle you should give its coat a good brushing. This will untangle its fur and remove any debris that may be embedded in its coat. Goldendoodles should be brushed on a regular basis. Try to brush it every day to keep its coat mat free. Use a slicker brush to brush your goldendoodle. These brushes work well with a goldendoodle's coat and are available at most pet supply stores. Start clipping the goldendoodle's coat by moving the clipper out to areas that could not be combed through. In addition to eliminating unsightly areas on the coat, removing mats and tangles will allow you to comb through the coat as you clip it. Get a pair of clippers that are designed for grooming dogs as well as a grooming comb that clips onto the end of the clippers. They will cut through the dog's fur quickly and effectively. Grooming clippers are generally sold at large pet stores and from online retailers. Scissors can accidentally cut and injure the dog. Only professionals should use scissors on dogs. Prepare a warm bath and put your dog in it. Scrub its coat clean with dog shampoo and then rinse it out thoroughly. This will allow you to really determine the state of the dog's coat and to handle a clean dog while you are cutting its fur. Dog shampoo is available at pet stores and from online retailers. Don't use shampoo that is made for humans. Dog shampoo is formulated specifically for dogs and will not strip the natural oils from their fur and skin. Once the dog is clean you should dry its coat before trimming it. Having a dry coat while trimming the coat is important so that you can assess the length of fur you want while you are doing the trimming. A wet coat tends to shrink and will not allow you to judge what the final product will look like while you are trimming. Rub the dog with a towel to get most of the moisture out of its coat. Then allow the dog to shake itself off and let the coat air dry. When drying your dog you should also be sure to dry the dog's ears. Goldendoodles tend to get ear infections easily, so drying their ears is important. In order to be precise with your cuts and to deal with the flexibility of the ear, you should find some grooming clippers to use on your dog's ears. The fur on the outside of the ear should be trimmed to a uniform length. Typically this is around 1 inch 2. Trim the fur around the entrance to the ears to a short length. It should be short enough so that the dog's fur doesn't cover the entrance to its ears. Trimming this fur short can help your dog's hearing and will increase air circulation in the ear, which can cut down on the chance of ear infections. In order for your goldendoodle to see, you should keep the fur in front of its eyes trimmed. Use clippers to trim around the eyes. You may also want to thin the fur between the eyes with thinning shears so that the fur in this area does not get very thick. Make sure your dog is calm and not moving before attempting to use clippers around that area of fur so that you don't accidentally injure its eyes. The top of a goldendoodle's muzzle can get thick and puffy, so it should be trimmed down. However, keep the sides of the muzzle longer than the top and bottom. The length of the top and sides of the muzzle are up to you but make sure that the fur on the side of the muzzle is short enough so that it doesn't get in the dog's mouth. Begin trimming the fur on the back of the dog's head with dog grooming clippers. As you move the clippers down the dog's neck, transition the length to the length you want on the rest of the dog's body. The length of fur on the dog's head and body may be the same length or the fur on the head might be slightly longer. This is purely based on personal preference. Using dog clippers with a 1 inch 2. Be sure to thoroughly clip the large areas, such as the back, by going over them several times. With the clipper guard on you should be able to keep the length of the coat uniform as long as the dog stays still. The fur on a goldendoodle's feet is typically cut shorter than the rest of the dog's body. This will allow you to keep its paws cleaner and will give them a tidy look. It's important not to forget to trim the fur between your goldendoodle's toes. This area can be easily overlooked but it is important for your dog's comfort that this fur be removed. If your dog is anxious, you may need to restrain it a bit to successfully trim this fur without hurting the dog. After you have cleaned up the fur on your goldendoodle's feet, you should take the time to trim its nails as well. A dog's nails need to be trimmed regularly, especially if it mostly walks around on a soft surface that doesn't wear its nails down. They are available at all pet supply stores. You will want to hold the dog still while you are trimming its nails. When trimming the nail, don't cut off very much. You want to avoid cutting into the quick, which is the blood vessel inside the nail. When grooming your dog you should also clean the inside of its mouth. Purchase dog toothpaste and a dog toothbrush and use them to brush the dog's teeth. Dog toothpaste is typically available at every pet store and from online retailers. It can take some time to get a dog used to tooth brushing, so don't expect your dog to love this process right away. Be sure to use toothpaste that is made specifically for dogs. Toothpaste for humans can be toxic to dogs, so don't use it on their teeth. Part of grooming your dog is making sure that its ears are clean and healthy. Look in the dog's ears and use a veterinary ear cleaner to remove any dirt and debris. Be careful when you are cleaning your dog's ears. It's important not to press any debris down into the animal's ear canal while you are trying to clean it. If you think there is some debris in the animal's ear canal, you should have it removed by a veterinarian. Ear cleaner made for dogs is typically available at pet stores or through your veterinarian. Once your grooming routine is totally done you should give your dog one more brush. This will remove any remaining fur and will allow you to make sure that your have trimmed its coat evenly. If you find any uneven areas give them a quick trim to even out the coat. Nail clippers Dog hair dryer If you intend to groom your doodle at home regularly, a dog grooming table is a handy piece of equipment to add to your kit. This is done by brushing one line of hair away at a time. Using a metal or stainless steel comb with wide gaps is best for getting rid of mats, tangles, and loose hair in doodles with thick and curly fur. A dematting rake is better for removing mats in wavier coats. Removing tangles and knots is vital before bathing your dog. Brushing and combing your doodle should take place once to twice a week for a healthy, shiny coat. Bathing your dog before clipping their hair gives a better finish to the haircut. Some owners choose to shower with their doodles, while others use a bathtub. Work with the grain of the coat to prevent tangles or knots. Avoid using harsh ruffling movements, as this will encourage matting. Depending on how skilled you are, you can choose to use grooming scissors or dog clippers. Thoroughly clip the entire body, including the back, sides, and hind legs, including the base. The clipper guard ensures you get a uniform cut over the whole body. Trim the hair around the ear canal entrance to a slightly shorter length. Using round-tipped thinning shears , trim the fur around the eyes so your dog can see properly. Make sure your dog is calm and still when trimming around the eyes to prevent a nasty accident from happening! Using professional dog nail trimmers with a safety stop feature helps get the job done neatly, quickly, and free of injuries! Dog dental care is vital to prevent tooth decay, periodontal disease, and other oral health conditions. Using a finger brush dog toothbrush can also make it easier to get to the hard-to-reach parts of the mouth while making the experience less intimidating for your doodle. A quick tip! Feed your doodle the best dog food for dental health for proper oral care. How often you groom your doodle depends on how long or short you want their coat to be. For shorter coats, grooming should take place every six to eight weeks. Goldendoodles are a combination of poodle and golden retriever breeds. This means they have thick, curly, or wavy coats. Occasionally, you may come across a doodle with straight fur similar to that of the golden retriever. What is a teddy bear cut on a goldendoodle? Towels A Leash or other means for keeping your dog still If you plan to groom your doodle regularly, consider purchasing a grooming table with an arm. What looks good on one goldendoodle won't necessarily look good on the next. For instance, Maple looks good with long ears but Abria can't pull off long ears. She looks much better with short ears. Also keep in mind that coat type impacts appearance. It will likely take a few trips to the groomer to figure out exactly what you like for your special pup. Here are a few examples of clips we like. Again, keep in mind that every doodle is different. How To Brush A Goldenoodle Brushing is the key to having a cute doodle haircut, especially if you like the look of a longer coat and especially if your doodle has a curly coat. There are two main tools for brushing a doodle: the slicker brush and the steel comb. A metal comb works best for curly coated doodles while a grooming rake may work well for wavier coated doodles. If you encounter a mat, use a pair of thinning shears or blunt tipped scissors to help remove it. You may also want to try a detangler. It's easiest to untangle mats when they're small. A doodle covered in mats means a shaved down puppy, regardless of whether you prefer the shorn look or not. Sometimes people wonder whether a groomer actually could get all of the mats out of their doodle and is simply taking the lazy route by shaving her. Truly, the groomer may be looking out for your doodle's best interest. If your child's hair was laden with tangles, would you really want a stranger pulling and tugging at them for hours? You likely wouldn't put your child through such a hair-pulling experience, and you honestly don't want your dog to go through that either. Remember, you want your doodle to like going to the groomer. Rather than blaming the groomer if you doodle requires a shave down, resolve to brush your dog regularly so your doodle can have a cuter clip for her next haircut. Trimming A Goldendoodle Face Who doesn't love that quintessential hair in the eyes? It's almost a trademark characteristic of goldendoodles. But it doesn't take long that one cute curl to become an entire tuft of hair, hiding her eyes and blocking her vision! My favorite tool for trimming the hair around doodle's eyes is a pair of thinning shears because they help cut away unwanted hairs without leaving a distinct line. You'll also want a pair of small blunt tipped scissors. The Sanitary Clip You've likely noticed that your doodle gets a little unkempt in certain areas faster than other areas. Hair starts blocking her vision. She's begins getting little cling-ons on her rear end. But you love her shaggier look, and she doesn't seem quite ready for a full haircut. There are a few extra grooming steps you can take at home to help keep her clean and tidy in between grooming appointments. Expect to perform this maintenance every weeks. A pair of sturdy dog clippers with a detachable blade is a worthwhile investment. Use you dog clippers and a 10 blade to trim your dog's belly, behind, and under the ears. Doing a maintenance trim will help decrease the frequency of your doodle's grooming appointments, so the dog clippers will quickly pay for themselves. Your doodle has a thick coat and will benefit from clippers designed specifically for grooming dogs. The clippers you use on your own head will overheat and wear out quickly trimming your doodle's coat. You might also enjoy:. Goldendoodle Puppies at weeks old. Their coats are fluffy and getting thicker. The pup in the middle will be the first to need the hair around his eyes trimmed. We are not being paid or compensated to advertise these. These are just items we have research and added to our grooming set up. Here at Rainfield, we have puppies whose coats range from quite curly our F1bb or some F1b puppies to shaggy wavy coats our F1s and some F1bs. Goldendoodles take a couple years to get their full and final coats, so their coats will change and transition during those first two years. They usually start off pretty fluffy with baby fuzz underneath. Gradually the curlier doodles get more of a curly, poodle-like coat, although usually with looser curls that a poodle. The shaggy wavy coated doodles, get a longer, fuller, straighter coat, often with a little curl in it. In our experience, curlier goldendoodles need their first actual grooming experience a little earlier monhs old than the shaggy wavy doodles months. Two different coat types. Marcus the Great is an F1 doodle and has a shaggy, wavy coat. Princess Neely is an F1b Mini Goldendoodle puppy. She has a beautiful curly coat. Get Your Puppy Started with Weekly Grooming Maintenance Regardless of the coat type, before you start full-on grooming a goldendoodle puppy, they need to get used to regular brushings and the sounds of the grooming table blowers, clippers, etc. Go ahead and blow dry them a little bit after each bath. If you have clippers or beard trimmers, turn on the clippers and let your goldendoodle get used to the sound. Bring the clippers close to their fur in different places, their head, legs, feet. Give your doodles dog treats while the blower or clippers are going so your doodle develops a positive association with those sounds. Brushing your goldendoodle puppy at least once a week is very important. The earliest grooming a goldendoodle puppy needs is often an eye, ear and sanitary trim. When their hair starts getting in their eyes, or fuzzing out their ears, and when poop residue starts clinging to their fur near their butt, your doodle is ready for their first light grooming. Amber is a 5 month old F1 Goldendoodle Puppy. With our puppies that often happens at about weeks of age. You can either take them to the groomer to get this done, or, if you are more of a DIYer like we are, you can do this at home. A little trim around the eyes, a light buzz on the inside of the ears with a small trimmer like this one and some scissor clipping around their potty areas might be enough to tide you over until their coat is thick enough for their first official grooming. Just be careful because doodles can be bouncy. We use safety tip grooming scissors that have rounded ends for the areas around their face. A scissor clip will even her coat out a bit. With that nice coat, we want her to be used to regular grooming and the grooming table as well. Our doodles seem to need their first grooming at about 5 months old, but puppies with an especially thick, full coat, may need it sooner. Puppies with thinner coats, may be able to go longer than that. We do most of our own grooming, when possible. We prefer the longer, shaggier look on our goldendoodles, so we prefer to start with scissor clipping when grooming a goldendoodle puppy. Scissor clipping is all Amber needs for now. A grooming table makes all the difference. We use the large Flying Pig Brand. Grooming a goldendoodle puppy takes skill, but Violet 16 has learned her grooming techniques by watching Youtube videos. Amber feels good and looks so much cleaner and neater after getting all that puppy fuzz off. Dogs with long ears can have more ear trouble as the hair grows and gets trapped in their ears. Once this happens, moisture is retained and yeast and other bacteria can become a problem. Part of your weekly grooming maintenance should be checking their ears and using an ear wash. We use Zymox Otic and use that for 3 or 4 days. Brownie has those long, floppy doodle ears that need regular cleanings to keep yeast growth at bay. Conclusion Basic Things to Know about Raising a Pug It is important for you to understand the basic things about pugs to raise them well. Take a quick look at the things mentioned below and judge if a pug is a good fit for you. Temperament Pugs have one of the best temperaments among dog breeds. They are peace-loving and neutral. They can blend well with other pets and kids. Pugs are people-pleasers and attention-seekers, even as adult dogs. They are loyal to a fault but would never resort to aggressiveness. It recommended that a pug puppy be well-socialized to humans and other dogs or pets for them to be well adjusted to different situations. Environment Pugs do well indoors. They love companionship and would stay as close to their families as they can. They are easily stressed when left alone for long periods of time, especially in a new home. They can sit beside you as you spend the day reading on your patio and they can walk with you if you want a breath of fresh air. However, make sure that when you do take them outside, you do it in the cooler part of the day. Pugs are genetically predisposed to respiratory problems. They will have trouble cooling down after strenuous activity or during a very hot day. Grooming If there is one thing you need to pay attention to most about your pugs, it is their grooming. Pugs are big shedders. While the amount is average compared to other adult dogs, they will shed all year long! This is the reason why pug owners need to brush their coats at least once a week. If the shedding is more average than normal, go for two brushes a week. You also need to pay close attention to the folds on their faces. If left uncleaned, they become a good breeding spot for bacteria to flourish. Make sure the folds are cleaned at least once a week. Places You Can Ask for Pugs for Sale San Antonio One of the easiest ways you start looking for adorable pug puppies for sale in San Antonio is to ask places and establishments that regularly connect with pug puppy breeders. You can begin reaching out to the places in San Antonio Texas listed below and inquire if there are pug puppies that are for sale. If you are in search of pug puppies for sale San Antonio Texas, you need to know how to spot a legit breeder. Make a List of Prospect Breeders Begin with a list of breeders who have pug puppies for sale. Write down their addresses and contact information. This is a good test to see if you are dealing with an honest breeder and not a puppy mill. Breeders who do not follow ethical practices in raising pugs will hesitate to show you the puppy, much more, the parents. You can try by searching online for pugs for sale San Antonio TX, and writing down the top results. Signs of a Good Pug Puppy Breeder There are a couple of things you need to check before finalizing a transaction with a breeder regarding pug puppies. Look out for these signs to check if the breeder you are talking to is legit. A legitimate breeder will actually volunteer any information that would help the buyer become more confident about taking home the pug puppies. Pug breeders actually love answering questions about the dogs as it is a good sign that the prospective owner is doing his due diligence before committing to taking home a pug puppy. Ask the breeders for health clearances, confirm if the puppies are vet-checked and if the animal shelter can be visited. These are tough questions for someone running a puppy mill. Provides Proof Look for proof that the puppies have received their first shots, have been dewormed, and have been raised in a good environment. It has been proven that family-raised puppies are the healthiest and the most sociable with other pets and people. Provides Guarantees Legitimate breeders with pug puppies understand the complexity of making a decision to take home a pet. To make it easier for pet parents-to-be, breeders provide a health guarantee for any puppy that will be released from their homes. This is to free the buyer from any responsibility if the puppy would suffer from health issues that may be genetic in nature or that may have developed in the litter. Some breeders make it a point to require the buyers to agree to send back the puppies to them in case their situations change and raising a pug becomes too much of a burden. Doing this prevents the puppies and the adult dogs from ending up in a rescue shelter. Conclusion Bringing home a pug is an adventure you will take with you for the rest of your life! Pugs are the happiest creatures you will ever take home. They are energetic and loves attention, especially pug puppies. They will adore you and will go out of their way just to please you. The pugs were tended by the ruling families in China. The imperial court kept pugs because they were treasured by the Emperors who assigned guards to protect them while they the pugs lived in extravagance. Keeping pugs in Europe started at the House of Orange in the Netherlands. The pug became the official pug of the house after it saved the Prince of Orange from Assassins. Although these pugs were said to have been brought from China, the pugs from Europe at that time, as seen in pictures depict longer legs and nose. The pugs became prominent in the United States in the nineteenth century. They easily became family companions and show dogs. They became recognized by the American Kennel Club in .This occurred in , it was the first time a pug would be winning the show since it began. The pug would do anything to please its owners this is what makes them suitable to keep in many homes. Their Alertness makes them good security dogs but they are not predominantly used for security purposes. Pugs are stubborn, but this does not transform into aggressive manners. The pug thrives indoors. It is usually kept close to families that own it. It is classified by most Kennel Clubs as a toy dog. Despite their adaptation to heat, pugs cannot thrive well outdoors in hot and humid regions Pugs do not require high-intensity exercises; however moderate exercising will be sufficient. When the puppy is born, the umbilical cord breaks usually because the mom chews it off , leaving behind an umbilical stump. Over a few days, the structures within the stump break down, and the stump withers and falls off, leaving behind a flat belly button. A puppy has an umbilical hernia when they still have a hole in their abdominal wall after the umbilical stump has fallen off and all the surrounding tissues have healed. If the hole is large enough, abdominal contents usually just a little fat can push through, creating a lump. What Causes an Umbilical Hernia? Umbilical hernias in dogs are relatively common and tend to occur in certain family lines. Reputable breeders will not breed a dog who has a very large umbilical hernia and will avoid breeding two dogs with umbilical hernias together, even if the hernias are small. Umbilical hernias are usually harmless, but prospective pet parents who are concerned about the condition should only purchase puppies from breeders who perform all the breed-specific health screenings recommended by the Canine Health Information Center and ask about the incidence of umbilical hernias in their dogs. Find out more questions to ask your dog's breeder. Be wary if a breeder claims that the reason behind most of the puppies in a litter having umbilical hernias is their mother chewing off their umbilical cords too aggressively. A lump: With a small umbilical hernia, a little soft fat is all that normally moves through the hole in the body wall. When a dog has a large umbilical hernia, abdominal organs like loops of intestines may be able to pass through. With other hernias, fat or abdominal organs will get stuck in the opening of the body wall. Scar material may also form, which will make it impossible to push everything back into the abdominal cavity. This is a non-reducible hernia. Are Umbilical Hernias Dangerous? Umbilical hernias in dogs are mostly a cosmetic issue. But there are two possible risks: Strangulation: When a dog has a large abdominal hernia, it is possible for the abdominal contents that have passed through to twist or become pinched, which can block off their blood supply. This is a medical emergency called strangulation, and it is very painful. Thankfully, strangulations are extremely rare—most veterinarians never see a case over their entire careers. Trauma to the Skin: Because hernias form a protrusion away from the body wall, it is also possible for the skin over them to become damaged after dragging against rough or irritating surfaces. Make an appointment with your veterinarian if you have any questions about umbilical hernias and your dog. They can usually tell you if your dog has a hernia after performing a physical examination and then can discuss treatment options with you. This is especially true if your dog is very young. Small umbilical hernias may close on their own until a puppy is 3 to 4 months of age. On the other hand, large hernias should be repaired because they are unsightly, probably at least a little annoying to the dog, and because, even though the risk is small, strangulation of abdominal contents is potentially life-threatening. Oftentimes, veterinarians will recommend surgery to repair an umbilical hernia when a dog is going to be anesthetized for other reasons, such as spaying or neutering. For large hernias, mesh may be placed over the hole instead of drawing the umbilical ring together. If they do, they may remove their sutures and need another hernia surgery to repair the damage. E-collars , bandages, surgery recovery suits, or onesies can all be used to keep dogs from damaging their incisions. Make sure you give your dog any post-op medications that your veterinarian has prescribed, follow their directions regarding activity restriction and other lifestyle modifications, and return for any follow-up appointments they recommend. What does this all mean for you? If you already have a dog with a small umbilical hernia, the choice to have it repaired is all yours. Large umbilical hernias do need treatment, but even these surgeries can usually wait until a puppy is a little older and is scheduled to be spayed or neutered. Considering umbilical hernia repair for your pup? Find out how to calm a dog after surgery. I run my fingers down the center near their belly button feeling for the telltale blob of an umbilical hernia and near the groin checking for inguinal lumps and we find them quite a bit. Hernias are not uncommon in puppies, and occur in a variety of ways. The good news is most are easily treatable and often caught early. A hernia occurs when abdominal organs or fatty tissue protrude through a weak spot in the muscle or connective tissue. The severity of the hernia depends on the size of the defect in the abdominal wall. In its most benign form, a small amount of abdominal fat may intermittently protrude from the hole and be easily placed back through with a little pressure. In its most severe form, intestines or other abdominal organs may pass through the the hole, compressing blood supply and essentially strangling the organ. In these worst-case scenarios hernias can become life threatening in a short period of time. Amazingly, even large hernias can often be successfully treated if the diagnosis is made before the herniated organ is compromised. In some cases the closure is incomplete, leaving a hole in the abdomen through which contents can herniate. Inguinal : the inguinal canal is an opening in the area of the groin through which the testicles descend. Both males and females have an inguinal canal and can suffer from inguinal hernias. Diaphragmatic : the diaphragm is the large sheet of muscle that separates the chest cavity from the abdomen. While trauma and congenital defects can cause defects at any point along the diaphragm, there are two specific subtypes of diaphragmatic hernia which are known to occur as congenital defects in puppies: Hiatal : the hiatus is an opening in the diaphragm where the esophagus, which carries food from the mouth to the stomach, passes from the chest to the abdomen. If the opening is larger than it should be, the stomach can start to bulge through into the chest cavity. Peritoneopericardial : this mouthful of a word refers to an opening between the peritoneum a membrane lining the abdominal cavity and the pericardium the sac that surrounds the heart. This results from an embryologic problem during development, and is the most common form of congenital pericardial defect in the dog. What Causes Hernias in Dogs? Hernias can be congenital meaning the puppy was born with the condition or acquired through trauma, disease or aging. Congenital hernias are the most common cause noted in young dogs. They may be the result of a spontaneous problem during development, or a genetic defect passed on from one of the parents. Trauma is the other common cause of hernias in puppies. Blunt force trauma such as being hit by a car or any sort of blow to the body wall can cause a tear in either the abdominal wall or the diaphragm, allowing abdominal organs to herniate. What are the Signs of a Hernia in Puppies? Signs of a hernia vary depending on the location and severity of the hernia. In many cases, with a small uncomplicated hernia consisting only of a small amount of abdominal fat, the owner may not even notice anything or just feel a small squishy blob in the region of the belly button or groin. As the hernia becomes larger and more vital organs are compromised, signs may be as follows: Pain. If your dog has an outie, read this. By Deb M. Eldredge, DVM, is an award-winning veterinarian and writer who graduated from Cornell University, where she was the first recipient of the school's Gentle Doctor Award. Most of them are basically "outie" belly buttons. If small, they may seal up on their own and generally don't cause any problems. Larger ones may require surgery to close up the abdominal wall and prevent intestines from slipping out or getting twisted. Some dog breeds such as Weimaraners are predisposed to these hernias. Ideally dogs with anything other than very small umbilical hernias should not be bred. This is especially true if most of the puppies in the litter have one, suggesting genetic predisposition. What Exactly Is an Umbilical Hernia? In an unborn puppy, the umbilicus slips out through an opening in the puppy's stomach wall to connect to the placenta. When a puppy is born, his dam chews or breaks this umbilical cord or the breeder cuts it and ties it off. It dries and shrivels up, leaving behind the "belly button. Sometimes a small bit of fat may get stuck in the opening, which leaves an "outie" belly button. Occasionally the wall of the abdomen simply does not close all the way. That is when we say a puppy or dog has an umbilical hernia. Signs Your Dog Has an Umbilical Hernia If your dog has an umbilical hernia, when your dog lies on his back, you can feel a small opening at the umbilicus site. If it is the size of the end of your pinkie finger at 8 weeks of age, it is usually not a problem. Many of these small hernias will close up on their own by 6 months of age. If the hernia bubbles out or is bigger than a pinkie finger, there is a chance that intestines may be slipping in and out of the opening. At some point, a section of intestines could slide out through the hernia opening and get trapped or twisted. At that point, your dog needs emergency surgery. Signs you see with trapped intestines can include pain, your dog standing stiffly with his back arched, and possibly not eating or vomiting. If you see these symptoms, you need to call your veterinarian right away. Larger hernias will require surgery to close up the opening, leaving the intestines safely inside. If your puppy is not having any problems, your vet may recommend keeping an eye on it and doing the surgery at the same time as spaying or neutering. That means one bout of anesthesia and recovery for your pet and less cost for you. If intestines become trapped at any point, immediate emergency surgery is necessary. Some people have tried to encourage closure of hernias by using a belly wrap on their puppies with hernias. The goal is to keep all tissues fat, intestines, etc. This is generally not successful but does help in some cases. It is best to consult your pet's veterinarian for advice on the best way to handle your individual dog's treatment. Luckily most umbilical hernias are small and don't present a health concern for your dog! Was this page helpful? Conclusion Does your English Bulldog have a protrusion from their abdomen? If they do, you may have an English Bulldog with an umbilical hernia. The good news is that an umbilical hernia is most likely not to be a threat to your dogs health, and only in very rare cases can an umbilical hernia affect your dogs health. What is an umbilical hernia in dogs? An umbilical hernia occurs when there is a protrusion of the abdominal lining, abdominal fat, or a portion of abdominal organ s through the area around the umbilicus also called the navel or belly button. This area in dogs is located on their underside just below the ribcage. Can an English Bulldog live with a umbilical hernia? An English Bulldog can live with an umbilical hernia. Umbilical hernias can heal themselves whilst your dog is still a puppy, and will typically heal themselves before your bulldog puppy turns 6 months old. If your English Bulldog is older than 6-months, then it may require surgery. Is a umbilical hernia dangerous for dogs? Most umbilical hernias are not dangerous for dogs, however in some rare cases the protruding intestines may become trapped and strangulated. If this does happen, then your dog will need emergency surgery. What are the side effects of umbilical hernias in dogs? There are two different types of umbilical hernias in dogs, and depending on which type of umbilical hernia your English Bulldog has, will depend on the type of side effects that your dog will be suffer from. A complicated hernia is where the protrusion may have become trapped or strangulated, the side effects for this are: Pain and warmth, especially at the site of the umbilical swelling Vomiting Lack of appetite Depression An uncomplicated hernia is where there is a soft swelling in the umbilical area. Other than the swelling, your dog will likely not suffer from any other side effects. What are the common causes of umbilical hernias in English Bulldogs? The most common cause of an umbilical hernia in English Bulldogs is it being inherited. A umbilical hernia can also be caused by trauma. How do you treat an umbilical hernia in dogs? Some umbilical hernias will heal themselves, however if not, they will need surgery to correct them. If an umbilical hernia is going to close up and health itself, this will usually happen before your puppy reaches the age of 6 months old. If your puppy is older than 6-months, its unlikely that it will treat itself. Small umbilical hernias may not need surgical correction but larger hernias should be repaired to remove the risk of complications. Give your pet time and space to rest, and closely monitor him for adverse reactions. Check the incision site daily for drainage and redness, as they are signs of infection and you will need to see the veterinarian as soon as possible. During the first few days after surgery, feed carefully. Withhold food for a day if your dog vomits. Take your dog outside on a leash to relieve itself, and do not let her run, jump or play. Conclusion If you have an English Bulldog with an umbilical hernia, then you don't need to stress. The majority of umbilical hernias that English Bulldogs suffer from are completely harmless and won't pose a threat to your bulldogs health. For your English Bulldog with an umbilical hernia, we always recommend seeking professional advice from your vet. Many of those puppies will suffer from an umbilical hernia in their first few weeks of life. What is an umbilical hernia? An umbilical hernia in dogs is a protrusion of fat or tissue under the skin in the area where the umbilical cord linked the puppy to the mother. After birth, this umbilical cord dries up and falls away, leaving just a healed area in the abdominal wall surrounded by a little ring of tissue. In normal healing, this area should heal completely, leaving a tiny belly button. In some puppies, the ring of tissue in the abdominal wall fails to completely close, even though the skin heals just fine. This leaves an opening in the abdomen that can allow fat, bits of extra tissue, and sections of internal organs to escape. As this happens, these things bulge under the healed skin. This leads to a lump or mass where the belly button should be and is called an umbilical hernia. Recognizing an umbilical hernia When you take your puppy in for his or her first exam, the veterinarian will gently press on the area around the belly button. This palpation is meant to check the internal organs, but will also identify any lumps or bumps under the skin. A soft mass at the location of the belly button indicates an umbilical hernia. In some cases, the herniated area will be large enough to be visible without a physical exam. The size of the lump determines which treatment options the veterinarian might recommend. Dangers of umbilical hernias In most cases, the puppy will be just fine with a small umbilical hernia. Think of it as a protruding belly button on a human, an outie instead of an innie. This happens when the skin heals, but a tiny sliver of the umbilical opening remains unclosed inside the body. Over time this opening may heal on its own. In some instances, the vet may choose to treat the hernia. The risks multiply when the opening or ring of tissue under the skin is larger than a fraction of an inch. In larger openings, a portion of the intestines can drop through the opening and not re enter the body through the same opening, on its own. This can lead to a pinched intestine- a condition that cuts off the blood supply to the intestine, causes the inability to feed and pass waste, and causes a build up of toxins in the body. Treating the umbilical hernia If the hernia is very small, the veterinarian will likely recommend waiting a few months to see if it heals on its own. This is the optimal solution to the problem. If the hernia is larger than a few centimeters, the vet may instruct you to keep a close eye on your pet for any signs of intestinal distress. So, What happens next? What is a hernia and what causes them? Hernias are a common congenital condition meaning that puppies are born with them , affecting around 1 in puppies. A hernia is a hole in the muscle wall of the tummy abdomen which allows the abdominal contents fat, intestines and other organs to squeeze through into a space under the skin or, less commonly, through the diaphragm into the chest. This usually causes a soft, squishy swelling under the skin, which often fluctuates in size. It may occasionally pop in and out of the tummy, disappearing for short periods of time. While some hernias result from trauma causing a tear in the muscle, most puppy hernias are congenital problems. This is where the muscle fails to develop properly. There may be a genetic element to this condition, as some breeds appear more susceptible. So it is advisable not to breed from a dog with a hernia. Hernias typically arise in specific locations. These result from the muscle failing to close over the area where the umbilical cord entered the body. Less frequently, hernias are found in the groin inguinal or next to the bottom perineal. The rarest kind of hernias involve the diaphragm and can be more difficult to diagnose as they are less obvious from outside. How are hernias diagnosed in puppies? Most external hernias are fairly easy to diagnose just by their location and feel. A soft swelling under the skin in one of the characteristic hernia locations is a strong indicator but your vet will check for an underlying hole in the muscle wall to be sure. These checks are quick, pain-free and harmless. In a small number of cases, or when an internal hernia is suspected, additional tests such as an ultrasound or X-ray may be necessary to diagnose the problem and assess its severity. These are straightforward, non-invasive procedures but may require your puppy to be sedated; your vet will be happy to discuss any questions you may have about this. Are there any problems hernias cause? How serious a hernia is depends on its location, its size and its contents. While many hernias cause few problems, some can make a pup very unwell. Most hernias, especially small ones, contain just fat which usually causes little problem apart from, possibly, some mild discomfort. The main concern with small hernias is that they get larger over time. Bigger hernias may allow a loop of the intestines or other organs such as the liver or bladder to pop out of the tummy. But having intestines or organs in this location exposes them to injury. In a small number of cases, it can make a pup seriously unwell. It can cause them to go off their food, be lethargic, vomit repeatedly or suffer breathing problems. These are potentially life-threatening complications. What treatment do hernias require? Some very small hernias may require no treatment at all because the muscle does eventually close as the puppy grows. These hernias leave a small blob of fat under the skin which can look a bit funny but is not usually of concern. Most hernias, however, will need surgery to close the hole in the muscle. The contents of the hernia to their normal location. Surgery is advisable even if your puppy is currently unaffected by their hernia, to prevent more serious problems later in life. If the hernia is small and stable, this may be done once your puppy is big and old enough, or at the same time as neutering. This is usually from six months of age. So your vet may advise regular checks of the hernia to make sure it is not causing problems in the meantime. For large hernias, or those which involve the intestines or other internal organs, surgery may be carried out at an earlier age, or as an emergency, to prevent some of the more serious complications. What happens during hernia surgery? Surgery to repair a hernia requires a general anaesthetic. The area around the hernia will be shaved and scrubbed with an antiseptic to reduce infections. An incision is made through the skin. The contents of the hernia are checked to make sure they are healthy. They are then gently returned to the abdomen and the hernia is closed, usually with stitches that dissolve in a few weeks. The incision is usually slightly longer than the original hernia and there may be slight redness or swelling around the area for a few days. Umbilical hernia surgery is usually quick, straightforward and low risk. In cases where the hernia is very large, contains more than just fat, or involves the diaphragm, surgery may be more complicated. It may also carry additional risks, which your vet will discuss with you. Thankfully, these cases are much rarer. There will usually be very little trace of surgery after a few weeks. Most puppies make an excellent recovery. Hernias are relatively common in puppies. While some do cause problems, most dogs will have normal, healthy lives following treatment. Corrective surgery is usually routine and recommended in most cases to prevent future problems. They will be happy to check your pup is healthy and advise on the best way to deal with this condition. The recommendations in this review are not intended to replace the doctor-patient relationship. But pugs have some unique challenges because of their flat faces and compact bodies. They love to eat and can quicklybecome obese. Like many breeds today, Pugs can suffer from bone and joint disorders. Their skin folds also set them up for infections and other issues. And some pugs struggle with stomach issues and allergies. Avoid processed by-products and meat derivatives. Look for complex carbohydrates, including whole grains, sweet potatoes, and other vegetables, to provide fiber and energy. Puppies need more calories to fuel both activity and growth. As adults, the calorie requirements level out. The energy demand often decreases in the senior years when dogs become less active. Puppies: In general, a pug puppy needs about 50 calories per pound of body weight. Adults: Full-grown pugs require about 40 calories per pound of body weight. Seniors: Around years, pugs enter their senior years. Their activity and metabolism levels slow down. Puppies burn energy much more quickly and will need to refuel more often than adults and seniors. Weaned puppies under 3 months should have at least 4 meals a day From months, feed your pooch 3 meals a day From months, and above can have 2 meals a day The Appropriate Nutrition For Common Pug Health Issues Some health conditions are more popular among Pugs than other dog breeds. Each breed inherits some genes that can be associated with certain health issues. Here we list the most common Pugs health issues and how certain nutrients can reduce risk. A quick reminder: if you think your special pal suffers from any of these conditions, schedule an exam with your veterinarian to confirm your suspicions. Even with healthy dogs, these dietary recommendations may help prevent future problems. Portosystemic Shunts The Pug has a high risk for portosystemic shunts. Normally, blood with toxins and waste materials from the body organs travels to the liver for filtering. When animals are born with a shunt, the blood bypasses the liver and heads back to the rest of the body. If your pup has a portosystemic shunt, it may have stunted growth, be lethargic, have a wobbly gait, experience seizures, become aggressive, or demonstrate other symptoms. While surgical correction can help in some cases, medication and special diets can also help stabilize affected dogs. The key is to feed a low-protein diet with quality, digestible ingredients. Eye Problems Those adorable bug eyes can predispose pugs to eye conditions including: Corneal ulcers Cherry eye, usually due to an irritated tear duct Eye injuries Entropion or an eyelid that rolls inwards and irritates the cornea If your pooch has red or watery eyes or seems to be rubbing his face, talk to your veterinarian. But regardless of the underlying condition, you can provide nutritional support for good eye health. Offer fresh, high-quality ingredients from various sources including: Orange vegetables that are rich in beta-carotene, such as pumpkin and carrots Blueberries and other antioxidant-rich fruits Dark green vegetables like broccoli and kale for phytonutrients Oily fish such as salmon and sardines to provide omega fatty acids Avoid foods that have fillers, simple carbohydrates, cereals, and highly processed ingredients. These materials can trigger food sensitivities and allergic reactions that cause dull, runny, crusty eyes. Bone and Joint Problems Due to their specialized breeding over the years, pugs are genetically prone to developing joint disorders including: Hip dysplasia — the hip socket is malformed causing excessive movement in the joint. Over time, the friction damages the cartilage and causes degenerative arthritis. Luxating Patellas — the knee joint is too shallow, and the kneecap pops out of place, usually during exercise. The result is intermittent lameness or hobbling. Over time, there can be damage to the joint cartilage. Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease — inadequate blood flow to the femur causes the femoral head to die and become necrotic. Lameness usually shows up in puppies. The best solution for this condition is the surgical removal of the ball of the femur. Provide high-protein diets using quality, lean muscle ingredients for essential amino acids. The formula should have a proper balance of calcium and phosphorus to support the bones. Products that supply glucosamine and chondroitin promote healthy joint function. Look for healthy fat sources that provide omega fatty acids to help manage any inflammation. Skin Disorders Pugs have a characteristic, wrinkly skin that makes them susceptible to bacterial or fungal infections. Additionally, this breed can suffer from hair loss or alopecia. Look for formulas that are rich in antioxidants, vitamin E, and omega fatty acids. Seizures and Epilepsy Pugs can suffer from epilepsy and seizures, which are sudden surges of brain activity. If your furbaby has signs like muscle tremors, twitching, or loss of bladder or bowel control contact your veterinarian for a work-up. Proper nutrition that can help support your furbaby includes: Healthy, quality fats including sources of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. These ingredients help to manage inflammation and may help to decrease the severity and frequency of seizures. Because allergies can trigger seizures, avoid common allergens such as soy, dairy products, and gluten-containing materials. Provide protein-rich products with quality ingredients and digestible complex carbohydrates to provide adequate energy. This condition involves inflammation and death of brain tissue. Symptoms include: Circling. And the total number of dogs all breeds in the reports are .So while this is something that should be monitored and many more studies need to be done, it's important to keep in mind that this is a very small number compared to the estimated 77 million dogs in the U. The latest update is that there are no recalls at this moment that are linked to this issue. The Pug is one of the most easily identified dog breeds, known for its wrinkled light-colored coat, dark face, and curled tail. These little dogs are ranked as the 32nd most popular breed according to AKC registration statistics and there are many reasons to love them. Pugs also do not tend to be overly active, so they only need a moderate amount of daily exercise. The Pug was developed as a companion breed and it continues to be popular in this vein today. Pugs may be small, but they have big personalities and they form very strong bonds with their human companions. Although these dogs may not be very large in terms of their size, they do have big personalities and they love everyone they meet. The Pug is a very friendly and loyal breed that forms strong bonds with its human companions — they also love to meet new people. Pugs were originally developed as a companion pet and they continue to serve that purpose today. These little dogs have wrinkled skin and short faces which sometimes leads to breathing problems, but a healthy diet will help to keep your Pug in good shape. Like all dogs, the Pug requires a balance of nutrients in his diet — the most important nutrients are protein, fat, and carbohydrates. Protein is the most important consideration and it should come from high-quality animal-based sources like fresh meats and meat meals. Just be sure that the meat meal comes from a named source like chicken meal or salmon meal rather than a generic source like poultry meal or a byproduct meal. In addition to protein, your Pug also requires healthy fats in his diet. Fats are particularly important for small-breed dogs because they provide concentrated energy as well as omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids to support skin and coat health. The third most important nutrient for dogs is carbohydrates which provide your dog with vitamins and minerals as well as dietary fiber to promote healthy digestion. Dogs do not have specific requirements for carbohydrates but this nutrient should come highly digestible sources like whole oats and brown rice. If you are worried about food allergies, look for a product that uses gluten-free and grain-free carbohydrates like sweet potato and tapioca starch. These formulas are typically more energy-dense and nutrient-dense than large-breed formulas because they need to provide your small-breed dog with the calories and nutrients he needs in a smaller portion size. Small dogs like the Pug should be fed more frequently during the day than large-breed dogs to make sure their metabolisms stay at the right level. You can feed your Pug puppy freely but when he gets older you should ration his daily portion into three or four small meals. This will ensure that his metabolism gets the fuel it needs without putting him at risk for obesity. In addition to being mindful of how much food your Pug eats, you also need to be sure he gets enough calories. Small-breed dogs like Pugs have much higher energy needs than large-breed dogs. Consider this — a pound Akita might need a total daily ration of 2, calories while an pound Pug might only need .If you divide it out, however, the Akita needs about 23 calories per pound of bodyweight while the Pug needs closer to 41 calories per pound of body weight.
