EngAms often are larger, more athletic looking and with a more proportionate body than the English but usually retain the broad wrinkled head and strong chest. The short, low maintenance coat is usually multicolored including white. This breed is not one of the easiest to train. That being said, if from the beginning you can consistently instruct them with patience and offer them plenty of treats and praise , results will gradually come; often they are said to be stubborn. Note the EngAm should have early socialization to not be overly assertive with other pets if they inherit more American Bulldog characteristics. While many tend to be skeptical of bulldog breeds, if raised with love and patience, they are good family companions. They enjoy playing, attention, and affection which children provide so well, however, their large size may pose an accidental hazard to very small children. Most will do fine with other pets if socialized from a young age. Although watchful and protective, they are not outright aggressive and make good watch dogs. In fact, they will often be friendly and outgoing-- although sometimes remaining reserved until familiar with the person. Although more athletic than the purebred English, they on average need only a medium amount of activity. At least 30 minutes per day of walks and outdoor playtime is recommended. A fenced yard is also highly desirable for this hybrid. EngAms also enjoy trips to the dog park and plenty of toys! It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. His mother was a white English Bulldog, and his father was a fawn American Bulldog. He is 1 year and 6 months old in this picture, weighing 60 lbs. Stitch, as most Bulldogs are, is very stubborn and headstrong. If you give him an inch, expect to be taken a mile. I got Stitch when he was about 12 weeks old and he was the most terrible dog I'd ever encountered, but with a lot of time and intensive training he is the best dog I've ever owned and I will never own any other type of dog. He loves pineapple and oranges, he hates cigarette smoke and cheap beer—yeah, he only drinks Warsteiner and Red Stripe. He is mostly white, with brindle patches on his head, arm, back and legs. He has tons of black spots under his belly. His mother is a lbs English purebred, while his father, an American, weighs just under 80 lbs. We were told by the breeder, who owned both dogs, that his grandfather weighed 90 lbs.!! At 5 months, Rocko already weighs 50 lbs. He is very playful and extremely affectionate. He loves to cuddle and be held like a baby. He loves to take baths , and if I don't close the door, he might just surprise me by jumping in! He is intelligent, loyal and VERY stubborn. He only does what he wants and nothing more. He wants everyone's attention and plays well with kids and other animals. His "brother" is a Chow mix and they play morning, noon, and night though Rocko needs to take naps in between! He eats too much, tears up my house, chews on my shoes, and occasionally plays too rough, but at the end of the day, when I am lying in bed with him snoring at my side, it's all worth it! Sitting in the chair and at 10 months old he weighed 90 pounds. He got up to , but broke his hip when he bit a moving truck. He is fully recovered now and weighs in at 90 pounds. He still wants to bite the tires of anything that moves! We got Amos from a family in Corning, NY, who had a four-puppy litter. We brought him home when he was 7 weeks old and he just turned 9 months and weighs in at 85 lbs I walk him miles a day , weather permitting, and he never wants to stop. When we get inside he promptly drinks a lot of water. He goes through almost 2 gallons of water a day. He is a gentle giant and afraid of his own shadow. He would never hurt a human being since it is not in his nature. That being said, he is an excellent guard dog and very frightful to look at. His bark sounds like a Mastiff's and is deafening. He was extremely easy to train and has never had an accident indoors. He loves to play with the laser light to exhaustion and loves to rip and shred stuffed animals. Squeaker toys end up destroyed in minutes, sometimes seconds, and he proudly displays the internal squeaker to you in his dripping mouth. He will eat almost anything and is simply a joy to behold. Everyone who sees him falls in love and wants to adopt him. We love Amos dearly and he is a welcome addition to our family. However, breeders have transitioned the two breeds into working dogs. These dogs combine the French Bulldog and Chow Chow breeds and are relatively new. Both separately have quite different qualities, but they result in a particular dog when put together. His stature is small, with a short nose, a totally friendly personality, and puffy hair. The French Bulldog is super recognizable worldwide as its popularity is increasing. Although the Chow Chow is no longer recognized, it is known that the combination of both breeds would be interesting. Individual appearance General French Bulldog standards dictate that they are small, muscular, and even stable pets. Their weight ranges between 16 and 28 pounds, so some sites rate them as Toys. Chow Chows are not sports pets, and they have a broadhead that could be considered quite large. Its snout is short, and the eyes are a little hollow. The ears are small. They are compact dogs that are inches tall and weigh 45 to 85 pounds. One of the most outstanding characteristics of the Chow Chow is the color of their tongue that can be black-blue. The appearance of the mixture A French Chow has a high chance of coming out small and with a short tail. In some cases, it can be slightly curly. Typically the dog is 14 inches tall and weighs 30 to 50 pounds. Their head will be large and square along with a short muzzle, but it will not be as wide as a French Bulldog. The ears will also likely be bat-like and with fairly straight hocks in comparison. It is also possible that the ears do not stand up until a certain age, apart from the fact that the tongues may appear blue or black. It is rare to see white hybrids. Fortunately, many of these difficulties have a solution; you should only consult a specialist as soon as possible. Brachiocephalic syndrome This anomaly is characterized by causing breathing difficulties in animals with brachycephalics. Chow Chows and French Bulldogs have shortened snouts, which is the main reason for this syndrome. The chances of the hybrid inheriting the short muzzle are very great and related. You have to help the dog avoid making excessive efforts and completely avoiding the heat. Urinary stones are very serious, especially for pets, as they cause severe pain and other difficulties. They may also require surgical intervention, which is quite important. Not to mention the strict diet that the dog must follow afterward. This means that the chances of the hybrid contracting this disease are too great. Statistically mixed breeds such as the French Chow can have luxating patella by inheritance. In short, the kneecap would have trouble sliding properly while the dog is in motion. Eye problems Chow Chows may pass some eye difficulties to their hybrid offspring, some more important than others. Inward rolling eyelid problems, premature cataracts, and even glaucoma. Tail Problems The tails are more important than it seems since, in French Bulldogs, these are directly related to rectal problems. Fecal incontinence or hernia are pretty common things. French Bulldogs used to have longer tails, but that changed with selective shortening. The previous size is preferred since these were not related to difficulties, especially those with a log shape. The hybrid will most likely come out with a short but thick coat, which has many benefits. Something highly recommended is to constantly brush the canine so that the entire interior layer is manageable. Also, maintaining constant care in this area will prevent loose hairs, so there will be much less mess at home. Some dogs are not made for training, and therefore caution and moderation must be exercised. General characteristics Small breeds are not as easy to train as would be expected. Chow Chows are super independent and require respect if you want to be heard by them or receive any cooperation. You have to be very patient because the repetitions will surely be constant, even with skillful owners. The French Bulldog has the quality that they are very stubborn at times, apart from stubborn. This should be short in time, and the hours saved can be used for socialization and the development of obedience. How to care for your French bulldog food mix? There are many attitudes that dogs can acquire as time goes by, with care being a fundamental part of development. Regardless of the circumstances, several things should be considered for a French Chow, respectively. Maintain a balanced diet. Adequate and constant personal hygiene. Regular visits to the vet. Moderate but daily exercise, ideal are short walks. They are house dogs; you have to consider that. Avoiding heat is ideal. Many other things can be done to keep your French Chow pet in perfect condition. Care is a very important factor that cannot go unnoticed during canine rearing. Their well-being is a responsibility that the owners take conscientiously; taking charge is essential. You may also like:. Should a French Bulldog Mix take after their Frenchie parent, they will be a small companion breed that bonds closely with their families. They tend to have an energetic, playful personality and love nothing more than being with their favorite humans. French Bulldogs tend to be friendly, playful, and affectionate dogs that get along with just about everyone. They tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets. They will even warm up quickly to strangers as long as they have been properly socialized. If the other parent breed has a similar temperament, then you should be able to expect the same from a French Bulldog Mix. You can also meet the mother in person to see what her temperament is like and the behavior she is modeling for the puppies. The breeder should have started some training and socialization, but it is up to you to continue to train and socialize a puppy once you get them home. Frenchies are highly adaptable dogs. They do well in apartments as well as larger homes. However, as a brachycephalic breed, they are extra sensitive to heat and also sensitive to the cold. They also do not like being left alone for long periods of time. If the other parent breed is similar, then you can expect a Frenchie Mix to also be a highly adaptable dog. The other parent will introduce their own traits and some potential quirks, so you do want to ask the breeder about them. They could inherit none of the conditions common to their parent breeds, or they could inherit some or all of them. They can also be prone to allergies, have sensitive skin, and also a sensitive stomach. Good breeding practices will make a huge difference. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing issues to puppies. So, make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. Although French Bulldogs can sometimes be stubborn, they are eager to please and tend to be easy to train. As long as training is consistent and focused on positive praise and reward, they can be a good fit for owners of all experience levels. If the other parent breed is also easy to train, then you can expect a French Bulldog Mix to be highly trainable as well. Regardless of owner experience, there are many benefits of puppy training classes. A mixed-breed dog can inherit a coat similar to one of their parents or a coat that is a mix of both. You will also need to clean their facial wrinkles. Weekly ear checks with cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. As a small dog breed, a Frenchie Mix is more prone to developing dental diseases later in life. This makes good, consistent dental care for dogs even more important for them. Daily brushing with a dog-friendly toothpaste or using an enzyme toothpaste paired with cleanings at the vet when needed is ideal. Frenchies are known couch potato dogs that are happy to lay back, relax, and cuddle with you. Daily walks plus some playtime are usually enough for this affectionate little dog. Even though they like to relax, they also like to play and will be energetic when they do. They can also be athletic and compete in dog sports. As a brachycephalic breed, you do need to be careful of overexertion and overheating. But, there are plenty of ways to safely exercise flat-faced dogs to make sure your French Bulldog Mix gets enough exercise. If the other parent breed is also a low-energy breed, then you can expect something similar from a Frenchie Mix. If the other parent breed requires more activity, then you will need to be prepared for the potential of a higher energy dog. Fully-grown Frenchies usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. The other parent breed can have a big effect on this, especially if they are the mother, so make sure you ask the breeder about them. This can give you some idea of what size to expect in a fully-grown French Bulldog Mix. French Bulldogs generally live for years. Although the other parent breed may affect this slightly, you should be able to expect a similar average life span in a French Bulldog Mix. Featured French Bulldog Mix Article. October 20, My Chow Chows and French Bulldogs I am always so happy to share updates on my pets - my dogs, cats, canaries, horses, donkeys, pony, chickens, geese, pigeons, and the peafowl. They bring such joy to me and everyone here at my Bedford, New York farm. I currently have four dogs. My dogs love all the extra time I spend at home. They love being in the kitchen with me, especially when I'm cooking and baking - they're always ready for whatever "falls their way. And they love to stop and play in the soft grass of the enclosed pool area. Here are some of the latest photos, enjoy. Here they are in the courtyard behind my kitchen. This breed is known for its wrinkly, smushed face and bat-like ears. They are half siblings and both grand-dogs of my late Champion G. The Chow Chow is an ancient breed of northern Chinese origin. As an all-purpose dog of China, it was used for hunting, herding, pulling, and protection. Because this area is completely fenced, I often take them here to run and play… And roll… And roll… Creme Brulee loves to roll. One reason dogs roll may be to rub their scent off on an area, marking it as theirs. Dogs may also be trying to scratch an itch when they roll in grass. And others just like how it feels. Here is Bete Noire walking over to check out the action. Bete Noire is called a brindle French Bulldog. Brindling mixes black hairs with brown or fawn. Brindle-colored dogs look a bit like canine tigers. It is so important to provide dogs with ample exercise to keep them physically and mentally fit. I make sure my dogs get good long walks, and lots of time to play with each other outdoors. He and Qin pronounced chin also enjoy wrestling with each other. This is all safe dog play behavior. Chows should be sturdy and squarely built. Its body should be compact, and heavy boned. Empress Qin is already a Champion show dog — she is a beautiful Chow. I know Han will also do very well in the show ring. The French Bulldog is a small, active, and muscular dog with heavy bone and smooth coat. These two will try to catch anything in the air. Have you seen the videos of them on my Instagram page MarthaStewart48? And she is always ready for a belly rub after she is done jumping. Here she is taking a little rest before running around again. Frenchies, as they are affectionately called, are very playful. They also have calm, gentle natures. My dogs are all accustomed to the the many sounds on a working farm, but like all dogs, have a very sharp sense of hearing — I wonder what caught their attention. Han loves to rest on the stone pavers. Chows have dense coats, so the stone feels cool. Chows can weigh anywhere from 45 to 60 pounds. Their coats can be rough or smooth and come in red, black, blue, cinnamon, or cream. Both Qin and Han are red rough-coated Chow Chows. What is most unique and distinctive of a true Chow Chow is its blue-black tongue. The Chow should have a large head with a broad, flat skull, a short, deep muzzle, and very expressive eyes. Qin chose the grass for a rest — also soft and cool. The Chow has a lovely thick mane, with small rounded ears, giving it the appearance of a lion. Are you getting tired, Bete Noire and Creme Brulee? The bright, affectionate Frenchie is a very charming breed. Once inside, all the dogs are brushed, their paws are washed, and their coats are inspected for ticks.

That said, while it can be done, I strongly urge anyone who lives in an apartment to think carefully about how much time and work it can be to keep a large, working dog in an apartment. I will not sell a puppy to anyone who lives in an apartment and leaves the dog home alone all day. At least one person needs to be home during the day. The dog needs to be taken outside to play at least once a day and taken for potty breaks many times EVERY day. Also, please check with your apartments rules on German Shepherds; some complexes do not allow them. New strains of the Parvo Virus are abundant and it is my job to keep puppies safe. Read More About Our Australian Labradoodles and their origin This classic example of logical and planned crossbreeding was created in the country of Australia in the s. The goal of the Australian clubs is to create a new "breed" with the best attributes of the original breeds. The original objective was to produce assistance dogs that do not shed hair for people with allergies. Australians, on the other hand, have taken the Labradoodle a few steps further. In mid it was announced that the Australian Labradoodle was not just a Labrador x Poodle cross , but was a breed in its own right developed over many years with particular goals in mind. To accomplish these goals, further development was done with parent breed infusions added to the already blooming Labrador x Poodle cross lines. The developers of the breed sought out the best way in which to compliment the Australian Labradoodle breed, and to develop the authentic qualities that they find and love in these dogs. In the very first Australian Labradoodle Breed Standard was written which reflected these goals. The Australian Labradoodle currently consists of 6 different breeds in its origin. We truly believe our Australian Labradoodles are the best dog available and will make a great addition to your family. Conveniently located between Milwaukee, Madison and Chicago , we are here to help puppies find their forever home with your family. View All Articles in Labradoodle Breeders Location Depending on your geographical location, you can expect to pay more money in certain areas. Naturally, the Labradoodle price is usually tied to the overall cost of living in that area. Of course, you might be tempted to adopt a puppy from a different state. Any of those can add a few hundred dollars to your total Labradoodle price. Breeder Stock Another factor that influences the Labradoodle cost is breeding stock. Breeding different generations of Labradoodles requires a certain set of parent dogs. For example, F1 or first-generation Labradoodles are often less expensive than F1b or F1bb Labradoodles. See Also: Click the image Demand Needless to say, the high demand can also hike up the price of Labradoodles, especially in more populated areas like major cities. The best reputable breeders have waiting lists that filled 6 months in advance, sometimes even up to a year or two. This in turn means that breeders will charge higher rates to keep up with the demand while not overbreeding the mama dogs. Size, Color, and Coat Type Another thing you should keep in mind is that certain sizes, colors, and coat types can cost you some extra money. For instance, some breeders charge more for Mini Labradoodles compared to Standard Labradoodles. Usually, the most hypoallergenic Labradoodles are found in F1b, F1bb, F2b, and F2bb generations, which also require more genetic testing to achieve. See Also: Click the image Breeder Reputation Lastly, reputable breeders also charge premium rates for their Labradoodle puppies. Ethical, reputable breeders put a lot of time, money, and effort into breeding and raising healthy and well-rounded pups. All of this reflects in the Labradoodle price. Professional breeders have learned all about health and genetic testing. See Also: Click the image In addition to that, reputable breeders know the importance of early socialization , training, and other enrichment methods. Ethical breeders also follow breeding guidelines set by established organizations we mentioned above. Many of them are also affiliated with the organizations and continuously keep educating themselves on the best breeding practices. How much does a Labradoodle cost when adopting a puppy from a professional, ethical breeder? Of course, there are many backyard breeders who have the best intentions in mind and only want to share the joy of this adorable crossbreed. However, oftentimes, these breeders might not conduct all the necessary health and genetic testing on their breeding dogs. Nor can they provide proper health guarantees for their puppies. Additionally, many backyard breeders do not choose new homes for the puppies as carefully as professional breeders. When a litter is born, they just sell all the puppies on a first come first serve basis. How much are Labradoodles when adopting from a backyard breeder? Puppy Mills Finally, we have the worst of the bunch — puppy mills. Unfortunately, these breeders only work for their own financial gain. More often than not, they neglect the wellbeing of their breeding dogs and puppies. Beware of pet stores, as well, as they often source their puppies from puppy mills. Puppy mills usually overbreed their mama dogs and keep them on tight schedules to produce more and more puppies. Meanwhile, the dogs and puppies are kept in unsafe and unclean environments, often in small cages and kennels. Moreover, these pups often come with serious health conditions. How much does a Labradoodle cost when adopting from a puppy mill? Above all, we urge you to avoid these breeders at all costs. As a general rule of thumb, larger, Standard Labradoodles require more calories per day compared to smaller, Mini and Medium Labradoodles. All of them are tried, tested, and recommended by Doodle owners. Training Training and early socialization both play a key role in raising well-rounded Labradoodles. Vet Visits One of the most expensive parts of owning a dog is taking your pup to regular vet visits and wellness checks. And to be prepared for those unexpected vet visits, we recommend you choose a trustworthy pet insurance company. During the first year, you should make sure that your puppy is up to date with all of its vaccinations and preventative care for worms, fleas, ticks , and heartworm. Grooming You might already know that Labradoodles are high-maintenance when it comes to grooming and coat care. Time Investment Like any other pet, Labradoodles require a lot of time and effort from your part. Other Costs In addition to all the Labradoodle costs we mentioned above, there are other everyday items that your dog will need. These include food and water bowls, dog beds, dog crate, a collar and a leash, toys and chew toys, and poop bags. So, you know with absolute certainty that the Labradoodle is the right pup for you. But how can you find quality Labradoodle breeders? As fellow Doodle owners, we know how difficult it can be to find ethical, reputable breeders in your area. Why Are Labradoodles Expensive? Ethical Labradoodle breeders charge higher prices for their pups, as they carefully screen the breeding dogs through extensive health and genetic testing. In addition to that, they provide their clients with genetic health guarantees and implement various forms of enrichment methods when rearing the puppies. How Much Does A Labradoodle Cost: Final Thoughts Adopting a dog is not just a huge emotional commitment, but also requires you to think whether or not your finances allow you to take care of another living being. Hopefully, this article has managed to answer all of your questions about the Labradoodle cost of adoption and the ongoing costs throughout their lifetime. Avoid making the mistake of choosing the wrong Doodle temperament for your family, lifestyle, or current living situation. A close up face image of Labradoodle puppy Max The price depends on many factors and can vary from breeder to breeder. While this might seem like a hefty price to pay for a puppy, the low prices that you find on social media or other ads are usually from puppy mills that try to over-breed these beloved animals in inappropriate and unethical ways. Low-quality living conditions notwithstanding, puppies from such places have a high probability of suffering from ailments and issues caused by genetic mutations occurring from rapid breeding. Labradoodle costs around the world In Australia the average prices for non-shedding Labradoodles ranged from AUD. There were some niche breeders that charged much more. Depending on how unique the coat color is, the price will vary. Parti-colored Labradoodles like Tuxedo Labradoodle or Phantom Labradoodle cost significantly more than a solid-colored cream, black, or gold Labradoodle. Sometimes, depending on your location, you may have to shell out extra dollars if you specifically want a multi-colored Labradoodle. Coat texture is another influencing factor. Shiny, sleek coats are more attractive and an indication of a superior bloodline. Hence, they are going to cost more. Curly and wavy-haired Labradoodles will be more expensive than straight-haired ones as they are almost non-shedding and hypoallergenic. Blue-eyed Labradoodles can be even more expensive, owing to their rarity and beauty. Labradoodle Size As they are crossbred, there are no specific breeding standards for Labradoodles. Most breeders classify Labradoodle puppy sizes as standard, medium, and miniature. Toy, teacup, miniature, and maxi are some other terms used to describe the size of Labradoodle dogs. The smaller the puppy size, the higher its price. This is because of the increased demand for smaller-sized dogs. Some breeders have their own standards and classifications when it comes to dog size and weight. While some breeders consider pound dogs as petite, others see them as miniature. Micro and petit are other terms that are used, both interchangeably and independently by different breeders. Usually, petit dogs fall in the pounds range, and micro dogs under 10 pounds. Age Typically, most people prefer buying a young puppy rather than a full-grown dog. Hence, prices are higher for puppies than dogs. For instance, a 6-month-old puppy is going to cost less than a 6-week-old one. A rich Apricot coat Labradoodle at the groomer. Generation Type Another determining factor is the percentage of each parent breed in the Labradoodle puppy. F1B generations have a purebred Poodle and an F1 generation Labradoodle as their parents. While this is a rarer generation, they are cheaper as their chances of being hypoallergenic is lesser than that of others. Generally, F1B Labradoodles are the most expensive generation as they have the highest chance of being hypoallergenic. Location and Demand The Labradoodle breed is one of the most popular crossbreed dogs, a close second to the Goldendoodles. This has significantly increased their value and demand. Dog breeders of bigger cities will have a large client pool and higher earnings. They usually have a hard time keeping up with the demands and hence have to increase their price. Breeders from rural areas have comparatively lower demand and charge less for their puppies. Nevertheless, the demand for low-shedding, hypoallergenic dogs is high everywhere, regardless of the size and popularity of a place. While it might be cheaper to buy your Labradoodle puppy from a rural breeder, you might still have to beat your budget to travel the extra distance or to have the puppy transferred to you. Although the low prices advertised at puppy mills might be tempting, getting a Labradoodle puppy from a reputed breeder is always a better option. Besides being spayed, neutered, and vaccinated, puppies from reputed breeders will also be appropriately socialized. This will make it easier for them to adapt to their new home. Most reputable breeders establish their prices based on their experience, investment, knowledge, credentials, and reputation with previous customers. Some breeders even incorporate training from a young age, and some puppies are potty trained at just eight weeks old. Reputed breeders also have health certificates and genetic records of both parent dogs in place. These certificates are proof that your Labradoodle is in the best of health and hygiene. Other Costs Associated With Labradoodles The preliminary cost of a Labradoodle will be substantially less than the total expenses involved throughout its life. Additionally, you might have to spend more on training foods and treats. Grooming The grooming needs of Labradoodles may vary depending on the type and length of their coat. Although Labradoodles are almost hypoallergenic, they need regular brushing and bathing. Medical Costs Most crossbreed dogs are usually less prone to ailments and diseases. Their larger gene pool also reduces their risk of inheriting diseases. One of the most common health issues with Labradoodle is hip dysplasia. And the surgical procedure to fix this is expensive, which is especially necessary for older Labradoodles. Besides this, there are other health care costs like vaccinations and regular veterinarian check-ups Ohio State Veterinary School source. It safeguards you against any unforeseen situations that may arise in the future with regard to its health. Training and Boarding Costs Although Labradoodles are very intelligent and highly trainable, it is advisable to enroll them in a professional training program to ensure their all-round development. It also helps address their excessive barking and jumping, which is common in Labradoodles. Labradoodles are high-energy dogs that can turn destructive when left alone for a long time. So whenever you go on trips, you will have to leave them at a doggie care center. Can Labradoodles smile? Ideally, you should purchase an adjustable crate whose length you can adjust as and when your puppy grows. Labradoodles are highly energetic dogs who need toys to maintain their mental stimulation and to keep them from getting destructive due to boredom. You might also have to make a one-time investment on a good quality bed as they often tend to chew and scratch at it. Labradoodle Adoption Price While you may want to get your Labradoodle puppy from a shelter, the chances are slim as Labradoodles are highly sought-after breeds that are usually kept in tight breeding groups. This is usually done to cover the cost of medical and maintenance care. Adopting a puppy from a rescue shelter is a noble idea, but you must also prepare to deal with any possible future problems with their health and temperament, as rescue dogs usually have health and behavior problems. My Miniature Labradoodle Max wearing a stylish rain coat Avoiding Disreputable Breeders The pet business has now emerged as one of the biggest industries worldwide. Unfortunately, this has also birthed unethical puppy mills, backyard breeders, and online pet stores, who have little to no knowledge about raising and nurturing puppies. Often, unsuspecting pet lovers trying to save some money fall prey to these tricks and end up with an unhealthy puppy with health and temperamental issues. This leads to them spending a lot of money on the treatment and maintenance of these puppies down the road. So, is there a way to distinguish between good and bad breeders and avoid paying exorbitant prices by accidentally supporting these puppy mills? Start by doing plenty of research on the breeder and consciously avoid backyard breeders, pet stores, and online stores. Additionally, look out for these red flags: Unusually low-priced puppies. The breeder refuses to show the living conditions of their dogs and puppies. Adult dogs are kept in harsh conditions and small cages. Puppies seem reserved, edgy, and nervous around people. The breeder has no health certificates of puppies and its parent dogs. Breeder refuses to provide any paperwork. Here are some standards and conventions practiced by trustworthy breeders: They breed puppies indoors and will take equal care of the parent dogs. They offer ample space and freedom to their puppies and dogs to run, play, sleep, and do everything they desire. They periodically clean and groom the dogs. They promote a healthy bonding of puppies with their mother and littermates. They try to gauge if you are capable of raising a particular dog breed. They offer tips and tricks on puppy care and maintenance. They have health and vaccination certificates from a licensed veterinarian. They offer proper legal protection like providing a guarantee for puppy replacement after around 1. Going through previous testimonials and customer reviews is another way of determining the credibility of a breeder. Find out how long the breeder has been in the business. Have a proper conversation with them and get all your puppy-related questions answered before you decide to get your puppy from them. With their love and affection, these bundles of joy can not only turn your bad days into wonderful ones, their high intelligence and alert minds also make them great guard dogs. Before purchasing a Labradoodle puppy, make sure to research the breeder and never get puppies from breeders who cannot provide health certificates for the puppies and their parents. Other costs include healthcare, toys, insurance, and the cost of any training, socialization, and canine sports classes you join. You can get wellness or preventive care plans to help spread the cost of some of these monthly fees. You can feed commercial or opt for homemade food, but if you do make the meals yourself, you will have to calculate protein, carbs, and vitamins and minerals to make sure your dog is getting everything it needs. If your dog has allergies, sensitivities, or general health problems, you may need special food that caters to these requirements. Labradoodles can have similarly high requirements. Some owners choose to undertake grooming and maintenance themselves while others book and attend regular grooming sessions with a professional. Which route you choose will ultimately determine the cost of grooming. A good compromise is to pay for professional grooming every 6 months and to brush, trim, and clip between professional sessions. If treatment and medication are not covered by pet insurance, you will have to meet these costs yourself. While this is true, insurance does offer peace of mind , as well as financial protection. If your dog is involved in an accident or does come down with an expensive illness, you may be hit with a vet bill of thousands of dollars. With pet insurance, the majority of this should be paid by your insurer, which means that you can decide on the best course of treatment according to how beneficial it is and not how expensive it is. If you have the kind of dog that gets through toys in no time, consider subscribing to a dog toy box. If yours gets bored of their toys, rotate new toys in and out of circulation, keeping old toys in a cupboard before giving them back after a few months. Your dog will treat it like a new toy. Image Credit: Mariusz S. It can be trained, enjoys working or taking part in canine sports, and does benefit from regular walks. Otherwise, the primary costs for owning one of these dogs will be food, insurance, and the cost of any professional grooming. The Labradoodle also benefits from being given plenty of exercise, but also mental stimulation. Canine sports, including agility, are a good way to provide the stimulation your Doodle needs, and these do cost money. If your dog develops behavioral issues that you are unable to fix yourself, there is a cost associated with training or canine behavioral work. First, consider adopting rather than buying, and if you do buy, do you really need a dog with an exceptional pedigree? You can save money on food by buying in bulk when the food is on offer, and ensure that you are getting the best value for money from the food you do buy. Insurance is another area where you can reduce regular costs. It is a good idea to have insurance but look at the level of coverage you get, as well as the excess and the copayment levels. For a slightly higher excess, you may be able to save some money on your monthly bills. Preventive care, or wellness, plans can also save you some money in the long run, but you do need to do the math and ensure that they really do represent good value for money or whether it would be cheaper to pay for each treatment individually. Grooming costs can add up , especially if you visit the groomer every month. Conclusion The Australian Labradoodle is considered a Breed in Development by the American Kennel Club and one should be fifth generation from the parent breeds, at least, to be considered a true Aussie Labradoodle. The breed is smart and intelligent, level-headed, and it gets along with family and friends while also tending to be friendly with strangers. The costs of breeding a healthy litter include: Health screening for the parents. Travel and accommodation to meet a suitable stud dog. Veterinary costs for mom and her litter. Extra food. Whelping supplies, such as a whelping box, heat mats, and bedding. Time off work to look after mom, and start socializing her puppies. Backyard breeders, puppy mills, and online sellers may offer puppies at bargain prices, but only by cutting their own costs first. So their puppies are more likely to leave home with inherited health problems that require expensive treatment later. Or with behavioral problems like separation anxiety or stranger-directed aggression, which are difficult or impossible to overcome. Lots of people are overwhelmed by the upfront cost of a well bred puppy. Adopting a dog from a shelter is one way to find a dog for less, but without supporting unethical breeding practices. And some regions even have dedicated rescue organizations which specialize in rehoming Labradoodles and other Poodle crosses. This is a much less expensive route and adoption fees often cover things like initial vaccinations and microchipping. Such as whether they carry any late-onset inherited diseases, or are reactive to certain triggers. What Factors Determine Labradoodle Cost? There are a number of factors which may make people willing to pay more for a Labradoodle. Breeder Good breeders are rarely in it for the money. Even if they sell their puppies for a more money than they spent on them, the profit divided by the number of hours they spent caring the dam and her litter works out in cents! All breeders have their own personal philosophy on pricing pups. They might have a reputation and a waiting list which means they can charge more than the competition. They might also charge highly to deter people from buying their puppies on impulse. Provided you ask politely, a reputable breeder will be happy to explain how they arrived at the cost of their puppies. But a breeder who refuses to discuss how they set their price at all may be attempting to cover up the fact that their puppies have been very poorly raised and are not worth the asking price. Breeding Stock Breeders who invest in meticulous health screening of their sire and dam may pass the cost of that onto their buyers, and they have every right to do so. Puppies from thoroughly health tested parents cost more upfront, but they are likely to cost less in lifetime veterinary fees. Labradoodle puppies from parents with show or field titles may also be advertised at higher prices. The puppies of Labradoodles that have been backcrossed with a purebred Poodle will have a greater chance of inheriting the Poodle coat. Other factors There are other things which might affect Labradoodle costs too. For example, in cities and urban areas, miniature Labradoodles might command higher prices than standard Labradoodles. Some factors have nothing to do with the dog at all. For example, many reputable breeders avoid producing litters around Christmas time to avoid buyers passing them on as gifts to other people, or buying them on impulse without really thinking it through. Low quality breeders on the other hand, tend to push their prices up at this time of year. The Cost of Owning a Labradoodle in the First Year Whether you go a shelter or a breeder, adoption fees and purchase price are only the beginning of what it costs to own a Labradoodle. The first year will typically be the most expensive because this is when most major expenses occur. Such as Having the dog spay or neutered. Training classes. Accessories like a crate, bedding, toys, collar and leash. You should always speak to your diet before making any changes to your diet, however. Norwegian Elkhounds have a higher propensity than German Shepherds to gain weight. Due to this, it is best to limit treats and snacks and stick to a set number of meals per day. Make sure the snacks and treats are of the same high quality as their dog food. This mixed breed is usually high-energy and does need quite a bit of exercise. Depending on what parent your pup takes after, your dog may need between an hour to two hours of exercise a day. Remember to never let your dog off its leash, however, especially around wide-open spaces or wooded areas. Elkhounds tend to roam and this instinct may be strong in your pup as well. If your dog appears to have lots of energy after your daily walks, it may be time to increase how much exercise they get. Do this in minute increments and monitor your dog closely afterward. At this point, the shedding will increase for a short time. Then, your dog will grow a new coat for the new season. Despite all this, the grooming techniques for a German Shepherd Elkhound are rather simple. Regular brushing is key here. Normally, brushing your dog three times a week or so should help to keep the shedding under control. When your German Shepherd Elkhound blows their coat, try to brush them every day. There will be less of a mess around their house. For the best results, use three different types of brushes. A slicker brush helps to get rid of matting and most of the loose fur. This can be used for each brushing session. An undercoat rake works to get rid of loose hair in the coat closet to the skin — this can be used more occasionally. A de-shedding brush is a great tool to have during the shedding season. It makes it easier to get rid of large amounts of loose hair in a shorter time. If your pup takes after their Elkhound parent, you will find that their fur is highly resistant to dirt and grit. As a result, you will only have to bathe a German Shepherd Elkhound every few months or when they have become very dirty. Use a gentle dog shampoo to keep them clean. Norwegian Elkhound German Shepherd Mix As with all hybrid dog breeding projects, it can be challenging to predict in advance what types of traits a puppy might inherit. However, what we can say for sure is that the Norwegian Elkhound GSD hybrid dog will grow up to have a working dog temperament, a thick double-layer working dog coat, and a very bright, brave, loyal personality. This is a good example of how unpredictable hybrid dog breeding can be. Some puppies may look much more like one parent dog than another, especially in the earliest F1, F1b litters of puppies. So that is what we will do in this section — learn a bit more about the Norwegian Elkhound dog and the German Shepherd dog parents. In terms of their lineage, the Norwegian Elkhound is descended from the truly ancient line of Arctic spitz-type dogs — herding, sledding, hunting, and hauling dogs that often appear fox-like in their facial features and sport a thick working-dog coat. The breed history states that these dogs are perhaps one of the oldest breeds on the planet with more than six millennia under their belts. German Shepherd history The German Shepherd dog actually does hail from Germany, where the breed was originally developed to herd livestock and was later conscripted for military K-9 and police dog work. Captain Von Stephanitz expertly repurposed the breed to keep it from becoming irrelevant when the rise of technology meant livestock herding dogs were no longer in high demand. Norwegian Elkhound German Shepherd mix history From this overview, you can discern that your Norwegian Elkhound German Shepherd dog is going to inherit a strong dose of the energetic, active working dog temperament from both parent dogs as well as the thick, double-layer coat. In fact, the concept of a companion canine is actually a relatively new idea! In this section, we take a look at how the temperament and personality traits of each parent dog might combine in a hybrid puppy. Norwegian Elkhound personality and temperament The purebred Norwegian Elkhound dog is incredibly smart. But when it comes to choosing a pet dog, this is not always a good thing. These dogs are quick learners and get bored very easily. They can do it all — run, swim, jump, herd, hunt — and are well known for standing their ground against predators three or four times their size. German Shepherd personality and temperament The famous GSD personality and temperament have been immortalized time and again in famous films like Rin Tin Tin and Strongheart. German Shepherds are actually extremely people-centric and tend to want to be with their people all day, every day. A lonely or bored German Shepherd is going to be a destructive German Shepherd, unfortunately. These dogs are known to be vocal and talkative, something first-time GSD owners often have to get used to. They are also incredibly brave and loyal and have a decorated history serving in the military, police force, search and rescue, and many K-9 roles. This hybrid dog breed will not fare well if expected to be self-entertaining for hours most days. Norwegian Elkhound size, height, and weight The Norwegian Elkhound typically weighs just 48 to 55 pounds and stands .There typically is not much difference in size, height, and weight between females and males. German Shepherd size, height, and weight The German Shepherd typically weighs between 50 and 90 pounds and stands 22 to 26 inches tall paw pads to shoulder girdles. With the GSD, there can be up to a pound weight difference and a two-inch height difference between adult males and females. Norwegian Elkhound German Shepherd size, height, and weight Where you will see the greatest height and weight variance in Norwegian Elkhound German Shepherd puppies is in early F1, F1b litters, since the German Shepherd dog can be quite a bit taller and bigger than the Norwegian Elkhound. If you really need a smaller adult dog, the best way to reduce the risk of having your little puppy grow up to be 90 pounds is to work with a hybrid breeder that specializes in later-generation hybrid breeding F2, F2b, or later generations. With later hybrid generation breeding, you will see a lot more consistency in every trait between puppies within a single litter. Norwegian Elkhound training and exercise needs The Norwegian Elkhound is a Spitz-type dog breed that is classified as a hound. Hounds are known for their strong ability to follow a trail and to track and hold prey for their human hunting partners. These dogs have such an irresistible desire to explore and run and track that they can very easily become lost or come to harm. The independent spirit of the Norwegian Elkhound can also make training and socialization challenges. Yet these dogs need it to learn how to tell the difference between friends, neutral situations, and genuine threats. German Shepherd training and exercise needs The German Shepherd dog is also high energy, a high activity dog breed that has an incredible athletic ability. These dogs love to run and jump and play and typically excel at the entire spectrum of canine athletics. German Shepherds, like Norwegian Elkhounds, need early and ongoing socialization and training and should not be let off-leash in an open area. They need help learning when to welcome a new friend and when to guard or protect against a threat. Norwegian Elkhound German Shepherd training and exercise needs Training and exercising a Norwegian Elkhound German Shepherd dog mix will mean devoting at least one hour per day to your dog. This can be a significant time commitment and it is worth considering in advance whether your schedule can accommodate this commitment. But what you will have is a lot of shedding — a LOT. Norwegian Elkhound longevity and health issues According to the Canine Health Information Center CHIC database, the Norwegian Elkhound breed has the following known possible genetic health issues you need to be aware of: Hip dysplasia. Norwegian Elkhound German Shepherd Puppies for Sale The decision to rescue a dog or to go through a breeder requires a lot of research. Fortunately, there are numerous resources available to help you find a good rescue or a reputable breeder who provides healthy Norwegian Elkhound German Shepherd Mix puppies for sale or adoption. Most animal shelters and rescue centers report that most rescue dogs in their premises are a result of a lifestyle change or an unexpected incompatibility with the breed. This means that there may be good Norwegian Elkhound German Shepherd Mix puppies or adult dogs who are in need of a new forever home. Finding a reliable Elkhound German Shepherd rescue or shelter may be as easy as browsing the internet. Check out local Elkhound and German Shepherd rescues to see if there are any of these dogs available for adoption. Unfortunately, there are numerous pet stores and puppy mills masquerading as reputable breeders. Take caution, and check out different online forums for discussions about where to find your future puppy. Make sure to ask a few questions, and visit the parent dogs or at least the mother. At the end of the day, use your due diligence. Whether you intend to adopt or to work with an ethical breeder, be ready for a brave and friendly companion. The Furhaven Orthopedic dog bed is an excellent choice since it has medical-grade memory foam along with soothing gel foam. This dog bed actually looks and feels like a therapeutic mattress. It also features an elevated headrest that your Norwegian Elkhound German Shepherd Mix will enjoy using. They praise its lightweight and durable construction, size and affordable price tag. We recommend this crate as it has a divider feature so it can suit your Elkhound German Shepherd as he grows. This implies that this crate will be the only one that your dog will ever need. Barking could be a major issue with these dogs. For individuals looking for a watchdog or guard dog to protect their property, this might be a good trait. Fortunately, you can train your dog out of it. German Shepherds are known to be quite aggressive, but this reputation is actually not deserved. They are watchdogs in nature and reserved towards strangers. However, they are not naturally aggressive dogs that will always attack. They are also highly intelligent and very easy to train. This makes them very easy to control. This makes the mix very unlikely to be an aggressive dog. Due to their high intelligence, Norwegian Elkhound German Shepherds are moderately easy to train. They will master instructions and commands quickly, but they might not always obey them. Conclusion Norwegian Elkhound German Shepherds are adorable dogs that make excellent companions, but they require a lot of exercise, care and attention. They are best suited to active families or individuals who can offer them the love and attention they need. This includes training them properly, and exercising them both physically and mentally. However, these loyal, brave and protective pups will repay you with love and affection for a long time to come. Checkout Our Favorite Dog Products 1.
