Think again. Under all those folds and wrinkles are all kinds of bacteria and dirt. Left too dirty, your pup can develop a condition called skin-fold dermatitis. You know that can't be good. Step 1 If your bulldog is especially dirty, which is often the case, you might want to wash him in the garden or elsewhere outdoors. In the cold or rain, however, always wash him indoors, either in a bathtub or a sink. If you wash your bulldog in a bath, help him out by putting down a non-slip mat. Step 2 Prepare the water. The temperature should be degrees -- the same as your bulldog's normal body temperature. In a bathtub, the water should be level with his knees. Step 3 Prepare your pup. First give his coat a good brush to get rid of any loose hairs. The last thing you want are bits of doggy hair all over your clothes and furniture or going down your drain. Second, gently slide a cotton ball into the opening of each ear. This stops any water entering the ear canals. Finally, apply eye ointment to each eye your dog's, not yours. This coating helps protect his eyes from the sting or irritation of shampoo. Check with your vet about what to use -- in fact, always check with a qualified vet about the care and health of your pet. Step 4 Wet your dog's coat with a shower attachment or a hose. Remember to rinse under his skin-folds and wrinkles. Don't rinse your bulldog's head and face just yet. It is always best to leave this part to the end to minimize the risk of any water or shampoo entering sensitive parts such as the ear canal and the eyes. Step 5 Apply and rub the shampoo into your dog's body. Use a wet cloth to get between his toes and underneath his skin-folds. A bulldog is unable to clean his own tail, so you should wash this thoroughly as well. Step 6 Wet your dog's head and face with a wet cloth, including around and underneath his nose wrinkle. Step 7 Shield your dog's eyes with your hand and apply shampoo to his head and face. Again make sure you clean under his nose wrinkle. Step 8 Shield your dog's eyes and rinse off the shampoo from his face and from under his nose wrinkle. Step 9 Rinse off the shampoo from the rest of his body. Step 10 Dry your bulldog with a towel, again making sure you get under the wrinkles and skin-folds. It will be impossible to dry him thoroughly like this, so finish him with a hairdryer. Step 11 Take the cotton-balls out of his ears and clean the flap of the ear and the visible part of the ear canal with a cotton swab. Step 12 Add a little vaseline to your dog's nose to keep it soft. Here are some things to consider when picking a shampoo for your bulldog. Their skin is far too sensitive to tolerate it. Always use a shampoo that has been designed for animals. Germicidal properties. Bulldogs carry a lot of germs in those folds that we want to minimize as much as possible. Germicidal shampoo will help with that. Fragrance free. I know we want our bulldogs to smell fresh and clean, especially since bulldogs tend to be on the smelly side, but fragrances should be avoided. Find a shampoo that is pH neutral. If you are looking for a good bulldog shampoo, we recommend this medicated shampoo from PetMD. It kills bacteria and yeast, plus helps heal any skin conditions your pooch my have. Follow with aloe or coconut oil in any dry spots after the bath. First, brush your dog to loosen up any dirt and dry skin. This is also a great time to check your dog for any infections or developing skin problems or fleas and ticks. Tip: Lay down a towel or a non slip mat on the bottom of the bath tub to keep your bulldog from slipping in the bathtub. Use a large bowl or plastic water picture. Fill it up with luke-warm water and pour the water over your dog. Begin by rinsing your bulldog from the front legs and work your way back to get the bulldog wet. The face will take some extra attention to wash, and dogs will start to shake the water off once their head gets wet. Add the shampoo to your hands and lather it up. After you reach the back, work your way forward again. But this time rub the shampoo all around their neck and around the back of their head, right up to the back of their ears. Let the shampoo sit for a few minutes, if your bulldog is patient enough. Rinse the bulldog off again, and be sure all the soap is rinsed off. And your done washing your bulldog! At least your done with the body. Dry off your bulldog with a towel, again being sure to dry all the skin folds they many have in their legs, and dry the tail fold as well. You can also use a blow dryer set on a cool setting to dry their skin as well. Give your dog one last brush to make their coat extra shiny. Plus 9 Tips on What to Look For! After you dry and brush your bulldog, you will want to clean their face. You should clean their face more often than you you bathe a bulldog. The face folds are especially important to clean often. Dirt, food, and grime get in these folds really easily since they have to push the whole face into their food bowl, water, and pretty much anything they want to smell. Baby wipes are great for this task. Just remember to be gentle. Start by wiping down their forehead and fur around the sides of their face. Gently clean around the eyes, and follow the tear fold down their cheeks. Gently lift the fold over their nose. Again this part gets particularly dirty. Pay special attention to the corners of the nose fold. Keep cleaning until the baby wipe comes out clean. Clean in the wrinkles under the chin as well. When everything is cleaned, come back with a soft cloth and dry out all the folds. Tip: A cotton ball is a great tool to dry the nose fold. Simply 1 or 2 cotton balls out and place them in the nose fold. Leave them for about a minute and most of the moisture should be sucked up. Watch for any raw skin and treat it with Vaseline or a mild ointment. Coconut oil is also great for this. Its edible and safe if your dog happens to lick it. Just far enough that they stay in place, but not too far so that you can easily take them back out. This will prevent water from getting in their ears and clogging them up. Using the same wipes, gently clean the inside of their ears. Wipe all around the tail, especially the underside of the tail. Then wipe the skin and fur underneath the tail. It is especially important to clean a bulldogs tail and behind area thoroughly. The skin in the tail pocket rubs a lot when the bulldog is excited and can easily become irritated. Keep in mind that this is not their actual anus, its just a pocket underneath their short pudgy tails. Its really not as gross as it sounds. After you have wiped all around and underneath the tail, follow with a dry cloth and dry the tail pocket thoroughly. Just remember to be gentle, but confident. You are helping them. Thorough washing and cleaning is essential to keep your bulldog healthy. Bulldogs are susceptible to skin issues, more than most breeds because of that squishy face and allergy problems. If you are committed to washing and cleaning your bulldog, you will save yourself from a lot of work and heartache for you and your bulldog later on. This will depend on your bulldog. Every bulldog has different quirks. Maybe your bulldog is especially stinky, or enjoys getting in the dirt. Or perhaps your bulldog has a skin issue and needs special shampoo to help them heal. This is all subjective. Use your best judgement. Their folds however, should be cleaned at least twice a week. Can Bulldogs Clean Themselves? Bulldogs can only clean parts of their body on their own. As both parent breeds have a straight, dense and short coat, your Miniature will have this coat type. English Bulldog Temperament English Bulldogs are kind and loving dogs, they are renowned for their patience with children and their funny personalities. Although they are very energetic as puppies, when they grow up, they are very relaxed and calm dogs, content to potter about the house, eat food and sleep out their evenings on your couch. They are an intelligent dog, who love to cause mischief! What Does This Mean Then? Happy like the Pug and relaxed like the English Bulldog, this dog fits in perfectly with people from all walks of life. Miniature Bulldogs are known for their peaceful nature. While they are known to be clownlike as a puppy, they are very mellow as adults, and like nothing more than to kip on the couch. Neither Bulldogs, nor Pugs, like to bark and so it is unlikely that your dog will be a big barker. However: Pugs are known to bark when bored and so your pup may inherit this from their parents. Bulldogs have a protective nature and bark when they feel that they or their pack are threatened. If socialised properly, this dog will get on well with all members of the family, including other pets. Due to the protectiveness of the Bulldog they may react negatively to the presents of unknown of unfamiliar animals or people. With correct, frequent and early socialisation as a puppy this should not be an issue. They make wonderful family pets as they have a sweet and gentle disposition of the Bulldog and actively try and gain human attention. As a result, they are brilliant with children and make brilliant family pets. Both the Pug and the English Bulldog love to please their owners so this will help with training this eager little dog. Consistency is key with this dog as they are not the smartest. You should start training as early as possible to help train and build a strong bond with your puppy. Pick a training technique, method and schedule and try to stick to it, we would advise: Use only positive reinforcement dog training techniques, all forms of dominance based training have been de-bunked and will create health issues in your pooch. Adopt a consistent schedule of short daily training sessions lasting for a maximum of 10 minutes. Bulldogs respond very negatively to harsh tones and are very sensitive to your voice and so you should never shout at your dog. When training your dog, always focus on encouraging the correct behaviours, using dominance or force will dampen the trust created between you and your dog as they have an incredibly loyal nature, and any harshness will lead to strong feelings of betrayal. Caring for a Miniature Bulldogs These are fun and loving dogs and get on well with all people. Caring for one is easy, as they are rather low maintenance, except for their constant demand for cuddles and belly rubs. Due to their exercise needs, they get on very well in apartments and do not need access to large amounts of outdoor space to run wild in! Exercise Requirements Exercising a Mini Bulldog is uncomplicated and easy. They do not need to run for miles every day like other dogs, they are more than content for a short walk to the park and back. These dogs are not particularly energetic, so you may spend more time convincing them to go walkies than actually walking. This being said, it is important to make sure they go for a daily walk, as this will benefit both their physical and mental health. Try to get your Miniature Bulldog up and moving for about 30 minutes every day — this can be through going for walks or through play. It is important to note that both Bulldogs and Pugs are brachycephalic dogs i. This makes it harder for them to breathe when panting and they struggle to tolerate heat, so when playing is important to be careful as they may overheat. Yards can also be a place to play fun games with your dog, this dog loves a game of tug-of-war or hide and seek. These games will provide physical and psychological stimulation for your dog. Grooming and Shedding As their coat is very easily managed, Miniature Bulldogs do not need regular grooming. They may need bathing when they get into something particularly messy, but, beyond that they have a very low maintenance coat. There is a possibility they may develop a skin condition e. Both English Bulldogs and Pugs are low shedders, but, do shed seasonally, so this may be something to watch out for.
