We highly suggest you research the differences between low, mid, and high content wolf dogs to see if this breed is truly for you. We love seeing you post or update us on your pup! Photo from: sagethebluebay Blue Bay shepherd dogs deserve a special profile card simply because of their extraordinary physical features and temperament. Thanks to Vicki Spencer, I can now finally write about science fiction without it being fiction. I feel like I am writing a Star Trek log entry right now. Her breeding program accomplished what many before her have failed to do — creating a new purebred dog breed of GSD. The Long Awaited German Shepherd Upgrade So we know all about the appearance and temper of the German shepherd from years and years of the breed being the most known dog in the world. Its features differed slightly from the standard GSD and were a perfect match to mix with her wolfdogs. The dilute gene gives it the blue coat color but the body proportions, coat length and overall physical appearance are identical to the standard GSD. What is a Blue Bay shepherd then? What is the temperament of a Blue Bay shepherd? Here come the answers! Blue Bay shepherds have a medium length coat, more similar to the wolf ancestors than the blue German shepherd. A double coat makes sure that the cold weather is handled with ease while still having insulation from the summer heats. The tail is fluffy and long, ending in a point. The ears are more proportional to the rest of the body I am sure Vicki is as delighted by this as I am and the eyes have a distinctive green tint. The contrasting eye color on a dark blue coat looks mesmerizing. Keep in mind that a Blue Bay shepherd puppy will have light blue eyes that over several weeks of growth turn into green. In terms of height, male Blue Bays can grow upwards of thirty inches at the shoulder while females usually do not go past that mark. They are substantial in terms of weight too. Males can be as heavy as one hundred thirty pounds some weigh more with females reaching an even one hundred pounds. Bigger paws mean bigger hugs and bigger holes in your yard. Thank god Vicki has the acreage to avoid the whole digging stress pun intended. Satisfaction For Wolfdog Lovers Dog breeders that mixed breeds of wolfdogs with other wolf-like dog breeds were never able to preserve the dog parent breed temperament. Wolves are wild animals and, in wolfdogs especially, the aggressive and possessive traits are deeply embedded into the genetic code. Spencer says that her Southern Breeze Ranch wolfdogs are very calm and showcase none of the aggression or possessive behavior associated with wolves. That is, indeed, excellent news for people who always wished they could legally acquire a wolfdog or wolf-like dog. These large dogs have very moderate temperaments. They do not display aggressive behavior like many GSD bloodlines do. Some of the Blue Bay shepherds have been mixed with Alaskan Malamute or Siberian Husky dogs to give them the calm and stoic demeanor. The blue color is not the only example of excellence. They retain their protective instincts and extraordinary ability to assess danger. The Blue Bay is very trainable thanks to its astuteness. They are also a bit more stubborn than dogs further from their wolfish heritage. Exercise needs are an endeavor with Blue Bays. Being a large breed, they require meaningful activity, and a lot of it. Taking it on a walk is certainly a nice way to relax and impress others with its magnificence, but the Blue Bays require intense work to expend their energy. They will be very mindful of children and will be moderately playful. However, a Blue Bay will obey only the most authoritative person in the family. Health And Life Expectancy Photo from: wolfpackblue The health bill is still unknown for this dog breed and a list of conditions that affect it still does not exist. Searching Google for Blue Bay shepherd health problems resulted in no authoritative web pages confirming any. There are mentions of hip dysplasia and bloat but without verification it is impossible to speculate. According to the International Wolf Center , the myth that wolfdogs live longer than domesticated dogs creates unrealistic expectations in people who want to get a wolfdog. So, I did some first grade math and found the average of a Blue Bay shepherd should be between nine and a half and twelve years. Keep in mind that wolves in the wild have an average lifespan of six to eight years but, theoretically, in captivity they can reach twenty years of age. Since Spencer breeds wolfdogs that have been five or more generations away from their pure wolf heritage with strong lineages of Blue German shepherd, I cannot claim that my calculations are close to correct. The most precise answer can be given only by Vicki herself. A million dollar question with a simple answer: yes they are good pets. That means that leaving it alone in a house for prolonged periods of time will result in uttar ruin by the time you are back. In addition, they require assertive authority to be housebroken. If you are not a person who often goes on field trips, hikes, or practices any intense activity that the dog can participate in, you will feel stressed with a Blue Bay always having extra energy to spend on your furniture. The double coat will need regular brushing. I hope you have some good brushes for that amount of hair. In case you or anyone from your family has allergies, this will definitely be a poor choice of pet as they shed quite a lot. Jokes aside, they can eat a lot, and I can only presume that you should not just use your garden variety commercial dog food as a quality diet. If you are planning to get such a rare dog breed, you probably intend to care for it to the best of your abilities. Contacting Vicki by email or phone or someone who bought a Blue Bay from her would be the best course of action in this case. This Blue My Mind It really did. When I found out about the Blue Bay shepherd breeder in Florida, I simply had to check what it was all about. For potential dog owners, this means that a new category of dog breeding has been created — wolf-like dogs that retain only the best traits from both GSD and wolfdog heritage. Considering getting yourself a Blue Bay? I say go and do it. Not without a plan though. Post navigation. Your only option is to buy them from the founder through a reservation application on the Southern Breeze Ranch website. You can also view the announcement of upcoming litters and learn about the breeding pairs they are using if you decide to visit their page. For you to be sure that you will get a healthy pup from Spencer, you may ask to visit the ranch and check the litter personally. The coat is shiny and clean without any signs of allergies or irritations. The eyes, nose, and ears are clean. The pups are lively and active. You should also take note of the following reminders from Southern Breeze Ranch to avoid fraud breeders: Vicki Spencer is located in Palm Bay, Florida. If the breeder you are transacting with claims that the pup will come from a different location, he is a fraud. Look for a Blue Bay Shepherd certificate bearing a registration number because every single pup Spencer breeds come with one. If they say they are lost, you may contact Spencer at and report it. Therefore, if someone claims to be her partner, that person is lying. Aside from being expensive, they are also very high maintenance. Here are some other breeds and mixes that are great alternatives if you think Blue Bays are not for you. It is very agile and muscular which makes it look courageous and confident. As of its AKC breed popularity, it ranked number two out of .The male pups are usually 24 to 26 inches in height, while the female pups are 22 to 24 inches. When it comes to weight, the male ones are also relatively heavier, with 65 to 90 pounds. The female, on the other hand, has a weight range of 50 to 70 pounds. This is a quick clip of a month-old Blue Bay Shepherd and a 2-year-old German Shepherd playing in the snow. The male pups stand at 25 inches while the female ones stand at 23 inches. In terms of weight, the male Alaskan Malamute is 10 pounds heavier than the female pups with an pound body mass. Siberian Husky The Siberian Husky is a compact medium-sized dog that works better in packs or groups. They are often used to pull light loads in snow frozen areas and they are also good watchdogs. As compared to other dogs, they are not as heavy with only 35 to 60 pounds mature weight. However, their usefulness is on par with other working breeds. Irish Wolfhound The Irish Wolfhound is known for its courageous but calm appearance. They are strong game hunters who can dispatch a wolf in just one act of combat. The AKC recognized them as among the tallest breeds with a height range of 30 to 32 inches. In terms of weight, they are to pounds when fully matured. Spencer did not mention in her writings whether Blue Bay Shepherds shed. However, if we look into their parent breeds, we can conclude that they are light to moderate shedders. Because wolfdogs tend to shed slightly throughout the year, and blue German Shepherds shed continuously and even lose their undercoat. Are Blue Bay Shepherds Hypoallergenic? There are no written pieces of evidence that state whether Blue Bay Shepherds are hypoallergenic. Its German Shepherd origin is among some of the most allergy-causing breeds out there so you better be cautious. Are Blue Bay Shepherds Aggressive? They may look aggressive, but Blue Bay Shepherds are a total sweetheart. They are very trainable, too, so all it will take is enough socialization while they are still young and you would be rewarded with a loyal and affectionate companion. Blue Bay Shepherds are not barkers, but they love to vocalize. In fact, an owner shared that you can get them howling by copying the noise they make. They are not as well known as other dog breeds, but they make a remarkable companion pet. They are gentle, affectionate, and trainable which are some of the qualities most pet owners are looking for. Thus, she embarked on the development of this dog on her own for several years. My passion for animals started at a very young age as I grow up on a farm with several horses, cows, cats, chickens, and dogs on our property. Leave a Comment. The Blue Bay Shepherd was carefully produced by crossing fifth-generation wolf dogs with blue European German Shepherds. After the addition of several other breeds including Alaskan Malamutes, the newly emerging breed sports a rich, thick blue coat and a definite lupine appearance. How much do Blue Bay Shepherds cost? The price is mainly based on the decades of work that have gone into creating this new breed and the costs associated with the care and housing of the foundation stock, which included wolf dogs. Southern Breeze Kennels is the birthplace of the breed and home of the continuing development of Blue Bays. All legitimate Blue Bay Shepherds are registered with a number and a certificate hand signed by the founder. Why Are They So Expensive? Creating a new breed incurs a lot of expenses. Multiple breeds must be properly cared for and expenses like vet and feed bills quickly add up. Additionally, building and maintaining expansive outdoor enclosures for the wolf dogs used initially is not an inexpensive endeavor. Will the Price Decrease Soon? Once a true standard has been established, a breed club has been formed, other dedicated breeders are involved in furthering the breed, and the Blue Bay is well on the way to full AKC recognition, prices may start to decrease. The kennel through which all Blue Bay Shepherds are sold purposely does not list prices online. While this may be a little frustrating, the reasons for this are valid. Just keep in mind that the following prices are approximations and only apply to a pet-quality dog. Crossbreeding canines to create new sub-breeds and variants is not a new idea. It should never be done willy-nilly, however, and is best done very carefully and selectively over the years by dedicated breeders with the knowledge and ethics to create a healthy, happy dog. Vicki Spencer is still actively trying to breed them towards an even more wolf-like appearance. Luckily, you have us to help you decide if this brand-new hybrid breed is a good match for your home. It will be many years, if not decades,- before it gets an official breed status. Remember, you should never choose a companion animal for looks alone. You must educate yourself on the breed and its quirks and ensure that you have the right family dynamic, lifestyle, and home for the dog. Only a few people currently own blue Bays, and their owners do love them. Most of these dogs average around 30 inches tall at the shoulder, with females leaning smaller and some males taller. The temperament of a dog is just as important as its looks. The Blue Bay is bred to be an excellent family dog with a stable temperament. Here are its key characteristics: Couch potatoes, but with a lot of energy to burn. They may get destructive if under-exercised Sweet and affectionate Non-aggressive to livestock and small animals Not timid around people As trainable as a standard German Shepherd Clever Powerful chewers Remember that every dog has a unique personality. To be happy, healthy, and stable in temperament, dogs need to be well raised, socialized and trained. Just like any other dog, Blue Bays need intensive care and love from their humans. Any dog can be aggressive if raised that way or if its natural need for mental stimulation is ignored, and the smarter the breed, the more stimulation they need. This is a very high-energy breed, despite the sweet temperament, so plan to spend a good few hours a day exercising the dog. Remember that these costs cover the care, attention, and careful breeding dedicated to the new line by the current breeder. Also, remember that there is only one Blue Bay breeder. If you see any listed somewhere else, or people claim to have Blue Bays that are not from Vicki Spencer, it will be a scam, so proceed accordingly. The Spencer-bred Blue Bays all have a registration certificate and a unique number. This is, quite literally, a rare breed. So rare that you can only get it from one breeder, Vicki Spencer. The breeding stock for this dog is incredibly rare, too. Blue German Shepherds are not unknown but are definitely not common or easy to find. The same goes for blue wolfdog hybrids. Surprisingly, Vicki struggled to find the right Shepherd more than the right wolfdog, which she had previous experience with breeding and handling. When she encountered a beautiful and intact blue wolf-dog hybrid, she set out to find the perfect partner for them. The original Blue Bay stock was bred from a litter she was offered, but the need to bring in new genes and keep the temperament balance she wants makes this a very long-term and careful project. The first Blue Bay Shepherd litter was born in .The parents were a French-bred Blue German Shepherd and her existing blue wolf-dog stock. Again, you can look at the older Labradoodle hybrid breed for more about this phenomenon. However, the very first official Blue Bays were 5 generations away from the pure wolf line. Once Blue Bays can be bred exclusively to other Blue Bays, this will reduce with time. You also see it on the Russian Blue cat. All large-breed dogs with deep chests are also at risk of bloating. Avoiding strenuous activity for 2 hours after eating will prevent bloat issues. It is important to stress that this is a very new breed. This lack of fixed literature on the topic must always be kept in mind when discussing the Blue Bay. Remember that you need to budget for regular vet checks at important milestones, their annual shots, and have good pet insurance or personal funds to provide veterinary care as needed. You should never buy a dog of any breed on a whim, but instead, make sure you have the money and time to devote to making a happy, healthy hound. Diet and Food Costs A great diet is critical for the health and well-being of this unusual breed. They typically need at least 5 cups of food daily, and it should be a well-balanced, high-quality brand with premium ingredients. Keep in mind that some Blue Bays are prone to sensitive stomachs. Some owners prefer other feeding regimes, such as raw feeding. Grooming Costs While the Blue Bay Shepherd coat is designed to look a little wild and rugged, it will still need careful care to keep it clean and mat-free, and to remove loose hairs. They may also need their ears and eyes cleaned on a regular basis. Still, the years of loyalty and love will be worth it for the right dog.

Email: sheila kensheipugs. Kenshei Pugs mainly breed for the purposes of producing show dogs, but they do on occasion have puppies available to go to new loving homes. They love their dogs and show commitment to the betterment of the breed in everything they do. But how can you spot reputable breeders when you start searching for a Pug puppy? Here are some tips to help you out. A good breeder will… 1. Issue a health guarantee Make sure that your breeder of choice offers a health guarantee. A reputable Pug breeder will write up a binding health guarantee for all of their puppies. The guarantee protects you against any genetic defects or diseases. It shows that the breeder is confident that their puppies are bred according to best practices. This means if you can no longer look after your pup for some reason, you will be expected to return the puppy to the breeder rather than taking them to a shelter. Provide standard health clearances Your breeder should have full health clearances for both parent Pugs. Good breeders often provide some early health-check clearances for their pups too, although some health clearances simply cannot be carried on such young pups. Issue a written bill of sale Reputable breeders offer written bills of sale to all of their new Pug parents. This bill of sale should be signed and will outline all the roles and responsibilities to be taken on by the buyer and seller as part of the transaction. Vaccinate their puppies All puppies should be up to date on their vaccinations before being homed with new families. Your breeder of choice should be able to provide evidence of these vaccinations. Reputable breeders welcome prospective parents into their homes to see the puppies. Follow age guidelines Puppies should never leave the litter before 8 weeks of age. Any breeder offering pups for adoption before this time is not following best practices. In fact, this could be quite damaging for the puppy developmentally. A reputable breeder will keep their pups at home until eight to twelve weeks so that they can be properly socialized and spend that crucial time with their mother and litter-mates. Answer your questions Last, but not least, a reputable breeder will be knowledgeable. In most cases, they will also want to ask you plenty of questions to ensure that their precious pups are going to good homes. We have a strict selection process that takes a variety of factors into account. That way we can ensure that only the best breeders end up on our lists. This way we know that our chosen breeders offer genetically sound and healthy puppies. Health testing shows a commitment to the health and wellbeing of each Pug. Contact information Any breeder that does not offer up their contact information is a big red flag. A reputable breeder will make it easy for you to get in contact with them by providing telephone numbers, email addresses, and they will usually have a well-established website as well. It shows a commitment to breeding best practices. Event participation Breeders who also compete in doggie events are often some of the best. Because these people tend to be dog lovers par excellence. They live and breathe for their Pugs and are proud to show them off in public. They are also more likely to have a high level of breed knowledge — an excellent sign for a breeder. Breed club membership There are lots of breed clubs out there that breeders can register with. These clubs have rules, regulations, and membership fees. If your breeder is registered with the Pug Dog Club of America, this is a great sign showing commitment to the Pug breed. Recognition awards Lastly, we look out for awards! Institutions like the AKC recognize the efforts and achievements of top breeders. The very best will be awarded the AKC recognition of merit award. During this time we recommend getting everything ready before your new arrival rattles through the front door. Your puppy will need: a crate for sleeping and training during the early days quality puppy-grade food a leash and harness plenty of toys You may also wish to purchase a puppy gate if there are areas of your home that you want to keep your Pug away from. This is all about making your home as safe as possible for your new arrival. Make sure anything that could potentially cause harm to your pup is removed. Clear your schedule Having a Pug puppy is a bit like having a human baby. So make sure to clear your schedule and get all of those errands done ahead of time! Once they arrive… 4. Avoid crowds Hold your excitement. That means no crowds. Try to keep the home environment as stress-free as possible so that your puppy can settle in and start to feel part of the family. Crate training is the first step. Lay down a regular routine from the get to and your Pug will be good as gold in no time.

The remaining steps of the adoption process will follow once your application has the go-ahead. If you need specific info about the Rescue or the adoption process, you attend the adoption clinics. Find details about the visits on their website or follow them on Facebook. The founding volunteers were people knowledgeable about the GSD breed, including long-term GSD owners, trainers, handlers, and other breed enthusiasts. They all had the goal of rescuing and rehoming German Shepherd Dogs. Once at the Rescue, the dogs receive nutrition and medical care, socialization, and basic training. This way, the pets are ready to be part of a temporary foster family and a forever home later. To achieve this mission, BrightStar pulls together the efforts of many collaborators, and you can also be one of them. How you can Collaborate with BrightStar Rescue Becoming a volunteer or a foster are the main ways you can be a part of the rescuing and rehoming mission at BrightStar. Alternatively, you can make monetary or equipment donations towards the care of the GSDs or commit long-term by adopting a dog. You can also donate supplies through their chewy wish list. Most significantly, you can open the doors of your home and adopt a needy GSD. The Finger Lakes Rescue is still in the process of building information on its website. Alternatively, complete the Adoption Form on their website and wait for volunteers at the Rescue to communicate and guide you through the rest of the process. However, members of the group also work with other dog rescues to save and rehome GSDs from shelters. They also educate others about dogs in need of rehoming. Although still on the journey of becoming an established rescue, we find the group a reliable source of information because it has an up-to-date Facebook presence. This means anyone looking for a German Shepherd rescue in New York could find an adoptive dog on or through this platform. Rescue City Rescue City is an all-breed charitable organization in Brooklyn, New York, that saves dogs from kill shelters. The rescue does not discriminate against any dog on breed, health, age, size, or personality grounds. Such inclusiveness demands commitment and a unique way of carrying out the dog rescue and rehoming mission. Unique About the Rescue As a foster-based organization, Rescue City places rescued dogs in foster homes while they wait to find their forever homes. As part of the rehoming process, the Rescue provides support and education to prospective owners so that both owner and dog have the best experience that leads to a lasting relationship. Every rescued dog undergoes medical and temperamental assessment, and if needed, it is altered, vaccinated, and microchipped. All this is possible thanks to the donations received by the Rescue from well-wishers. All donated funds go to rescue transportation costs, food, and vet expenses for dogs in foster homes. Want to Help? You can also apply to be a volunteer or foster parent. Adopting a dog from a rescue will give a needy dog a forever home. If you are looking for a German Shepherd, Rescue City could have the dog you are looking for. You may also send an email to [email protected] or become part of their Facebook following and learn about new GSD arrivals as soon as they are available for adoption. Final Thoughts If you are reading this article, chances are that you are interested in owning a German Shepherd dog, and adopting one from a rescue organization is your chosen option. The decision to adopt a German Shepherd from a rescue rather than purchase from a breeder does have its benefits. Pugs will eat as much as you give them. Measure your pug's food and feed him small meals at scheduled times. As he ages, decrease how often he eats. He should eat four times a day. High-quality dry foods and wet foods are nutrient-dense, so your little guy will not need as much of it as he would lower-quality foods. You can find high-quality puppy foods in pet stores and at your veterinary clinic. Avoid semi-moist puppy foods because they contain high amounts of sugar. Adjust the amount so he is still getting his daily requirement. He may want more; but as long as he is at a healthy weight, don't start giving him extra food. Pugs gain weight easily. Obesity in pugs can lead to muscle and joint problems, diabetes and heart disease. It is doubtful that you will need to increase the amount of food per day even though your pug is growing. Your vet may suggest that you decrease the amount of food if your pug is starting to gain weight. Some owners prefer to continue the twice-a-day feedings because pugs have a smaller stomach than larger dogs. It's hard for them to digest a large amount in one feeding. It is now time to consider adult food. Introduce the new food slowly so he doesn't have difficulty digesting it. If you are concerned that your pug is not getting enough to eat, look at his shape. He should be broad at the shoulders and narrower beyond the shoulders, with a slight widening in the rump area. If his shape is square, he is getting too much food. More Articles. You may find yourself on the dog food isle trying to make sense of all the ingredients, types of foods and categories. And all you want to know is… How often and what should I feed my Pug? Every dog is different, every type of food has its specific quantities and it even varies between brands. Start simple and figure out all the details and methods. I have collected information about the different types, brands pros and cons of dog feeding to try and give an unbiased as much as I can look, so you can make a better-informed choice which will be right for you and your Pug. Remember, people care deeply about their dogs and will often get very emotional about the health and feeding they chose. Having been the owner of a pet store, I have learned that although I have my personal preferences and very good reasons for them, others may have different choices and they believe they are the right ones for them. There are a lot of issues to consider. How Many times a day should I feed My Pug? A mature Pug can easily live a healthy life with one meal which provides all his nutritional needs. In most cases, it is more convenient for both us and the pug to split this to two meals. If your Pug had a full meal in the morning, be sure he will nag you like crazy in the afternoon. Puppies have smaller stomachs and need, relative to their size, a larger quantity of food so it is better to break it up to three or even four meals a day. If you are around your Pug all day and prefer to give 4 meals a day to a mature dog, there is no harm in it, as long as the overall daily quantity stays the same. Free Buffet or Set meals? Pugs are notorious for becoming overweight and need to be limited to a set amount. If your Pug is not typical in that sense, you are welcome to put the full daily portion in the bowl and see how long it lasts. One more reason for set meals is monitoring. You want to know how much you Pug eats. If you want your Pug to lose weight, you need to know how much he is eating in order to cut down. On the flip side, if your Pug is not eating the usual amounts it may be an indication of a medical condition. What food do Pugs Eat? Pugs love food. They love treats, dry food, wet food, table scraps, raw meat, cooked meat, spicy meat and meat gone bad. In rural areas and farms, they may have also got more meaty scraps. Our Pugs who grew up with Emperors and Royalty were probably treated to high quality scraps. Today, dry bagged kibble or canned wet food are the standard for most homes, although there is a growing number of people and companies promoting more natural diets of either raw or cooked food for dogs. Every type of food claims to be the healthiest, more appropriate, tailored and nutritional. Kibble Kibble is the most common dog food available and has become the staple for the average dog. Pros of Kibble The makers of dry food claim it has the most balanced and scientifically based formulas to provide the best nutrition for a dog. They also tailor these formulas to dogs of different size, breed, age or other needs. Even the most discerning dog owners should be able a composition to satisfy them. The ingredient list is unclear and misleading. There are numerous food recalls yearly. There are websites dedicated just to keep up with the recalls. Teeth are going to need cleaning. Wet canned food Aside from the meatier texture and the higher water content, there is little difference between kibble and the canned, wet counterpart. The ingredients can be similar and so are the health benefits. Some dog owners report that wet food makes for softer stools when fed exclusively. Many dog owners will give a combination of wet and dry food. Home cooked As with human food there is a growing number of people fed up Pun intended with commercial and over engineered food. Raw food Also called the BARF Biologically Appropriate Raw Foods , the idea behind it is that the dogs digestive system has not evolved as their behavior, and much like wild dogs or wolves, they should eat the equivalent to small animals they would pray on in nature. Since dogs are also scavengers this diet will include some vegetables, berries etc. The pros As with the home-cooked diet, you have total control of ingredients and quality No preservatives, additives, fillers etc. You need to learn how to make, takes time Ingredients like bones and internal organs may not be available in your area. Can be pricy. Even More expensive if buying ready and frozen. Takes freezer space Raw Disclaimer I am a little bias towards raw food. I used to own a pet food store specializing in raw food for cats and dogs and I have been feeding my own Pugs raw food for over twelve years. Obviously, I am very happy with the raw diet and its outcomes as switching to dry food would have been easy and cheap. I believe it is the better choice for myself and my dogs. I believe I have presented the facts fairly objectively as far as the other feeding options go. There is no standard or way to measure what natural is and what the added value of it is other then the origin of it. Natural color could come from some secretion of an insect. Special Needs Puppies These little ones need the most nutritious and high-quality food you can find. If you want to find an economic way to feed your dog, please do it later in his life. Allergies Pugs are relatively sensitive to allergies. In some cases, this is due to an external source such as home detergents, but more often than not it has to do with their diet. There are a few brands that you can try with low, or no grain. If you are feeding your pug home cooked food or a raw diet, taking the carbs and grain out would be easy. Our Pugs were and are on a raw diet from day one and we never had any issues with allergies, except for one time. We started noticing that Preston had pinkish skin around his paws and around the nose fold. Since we owned a pet food store specializing in raw food, at the time convenient, I know we tried different types of meats, but nothing helped. It took us some time to realize the cause. We had our baby daughter at the time, and since she was very close and intimate with Preston, and he was eating raw, we made sure to wipe his mouth and feet with baby wipes after every meal. The baby wipes were the culprits. We switched them both to hypo-allergenic wipes and the skin went back to normal… Hip Dysplasia Pugs are ranked as one of the breeds with the highest chances of suffering from Hip Dysplasia. This can lead to trouble in walking and running and arthritis may follow as well. If your Pug is suffering from Hip Dysplasia to any extent you may want to either supplement their diet with Chondroitin and Glucosamine or to choose a brand that is made for joint support. Vets and nutrition. Having said that, if I needed nutritional advice, I would go to a nutritionist and not to my Doctor. The nutrition training vets get in many schools is provided by agents of the commercial food companies who are bias at best. Skipping meals Dogs will sometimes skip a meal. It is natural for them as food is not something that was always available on daily base. It is not typical for Pugs but it may happen. If it happens it will probably be a one meal deal. If your Pug misses a few meals in a row you may want to consult a vet. Treats and snacks I try and think of treats and snacks the same way I think of candy for my daughters. If the amount of treats your Pug is rivals the actual food, in quantity, you should reconsider or at least re calculate it. If you are using kibble both at meals and as treats for training, and your stubborn Pug ends up consuming a lot of treats, just take it off the next meal. The same goes for snacks. They should be a part of the total daily feeding and not extra. How long can a pug go without eating? An adult Pug can probably survive many days without food, but no Pug would stand for it. Unless your Pug has a medical condition, he will surely let you know he is hungry. Do make sure that your Pug is not deprived of fresh drinking water at all times. More so if the weather is hot and if he is on a dry food diet and has no other source of hydration. What if my Pug is overweight? Pugs love to eat and have a tendency to eat too much. A chubby Pug is very cute, but at some point, it becomes a health issue. Overweight Pugs may suffer from a wide range of conditions and or aggravate others. Conclusion Food is an important part of your Pugs life and will directly affect his health and well-being. Do make sure you know what your Pug is eating, the quality as well as the quantities. Actually, yes. This is an actual condition called Eye Displacement or Proptosis. It is not a common occurrence but with extreme trauma or circumstances it may happen. In most cases the condition is treatable. More on the condition here… Are Pugs Loving? Pugs have been bred as companion dogs for over two thousand years. Being with people is almost in their DNA. So yes, Pugs love to cuddle, snuggle and just be in contact or as close as they can to their human friends. More on Pug Love here. Aug 25, Share An important part of taking good care of your Pug puppy is making sure that they are properly fed and that they get all the nutrients that they need to grow strong and healthy. Puppies have different nutritional needs than adult dogs, and if your Pug is like most, they seem to like anything that they are fed. Luckily, there are many commercial foods available on the market. There is also the raw doggy food diet that seems to keep getting more popular as time goes on. But what kind of dog food is right for your Pug? How much should you be feeding them? What will the dog not eat? Are there special considerations for a senior Pug? The answers to these questions and more can be found in our Pug feeding guide below. What you do decide to feed your pooch should be based on the quality of the food, no matter the type, and your personal feeding preferences. Here is what can be on the table for your Pug. Image credit: PxHere Commercial Dry Food Kibble Commonly referred to as kibble, commercial dry dog food is the most common and widely available option on the market. Manufacturers of this type of food work hard to balance the ingredients and create a completely balanced nutritional profile for dogs like your Pug. In fact, some brands, like Royal Canin, offer puppy and adult foods made just for Pugs. Whether you choose a dry dog food made just for Pugs or one made for dogs in general, it should include real meat or animal meal as one of the first ingredients on the list. The upside to commercial dry dog food is that it is affordable and easy to administer. It is also typically easy to store for the long term without worrying about it spoiling. The downside is that it tends to be dehydrating, so water should be available to your Pug throughout the day. Commercial Wet Food Commercially made wet dog food tends to be more nutrient-dense than dry food because it contains fresher ingredients and usually has fewer grains, if any at all. Most wet foods have real whole meat or seafood and broth as the first ingredients. Sometimes, veggies are thrown in for good measure, but many are meat-centric to meet the high protein needs of your growing Pug. Wet food is not as easy to store as dry food is, because it must be refrigerated after being opened. However, Pugs tend to enjoy the flavor and texture of wet food more than dry. Wet food is also a little more expensive than dry food, especially when trying to feed Pugs that are full-grown and in their prime. Raw Food A raw food diet is said to result in better digestion, a healthier coat and immune system , optimal dental health, and less susceptibility to allergies among other things. A raw food diet typically consists of quality meat, a source of calcium such as bones , animal organs, and a lower fat count than most commercial foods offer. Feeding your Pug a raw food diet will take commitment and a strong understanding of the nutrition that they need. This type of diet can be expensive and can require storage space in the fridge and freezer. It is recommended that you consult with a veterinarian to put together a complete meal plan to follow if you choose to go this route. It is a freeze-dried raw food supplement that is delicious and nutritious. The process requires about a day of cooking in the kitchen, but the time that you spend in your kitchen should yield enough food for your pooch to eat all week long. You will just have to store the leftovers in the fridge each day until the entire batch has been offered and consumed. Homemade dog food usually consists of whole meat like chicken, eggs, fish oil or flaxseed, brown or white rice, possibly vegetables like carrots and peas , and maybe even supplements of some kind. It depends on what kind of recipe you decide to follow. Any recipe that you consider feeding your dog should be approved by your veterinarian first. But you can quickly tell whether your pooch is being underfed or overfed by checking out their physique every day. If your dog is underfed for too long, you could notice signs like lethargy and an unwillingness to interact with family members. If your dog is overfed, they may succumb to problems like diabetes. If you find that your dog is getting underweight, start feeding them up to an extra cup of food each day. Reduce the amount by up to a cup if your dog is getting pudgy and out of shape. To help avoid under and overfeeding your dog, follow the feeding directions on the packaging of any commercial food you buy for them. If you decide to go the raw or homemade food route, your veterinarian can provide you with a feeding guide. You are free to use this image, but please give credit back to Hepper. Extra immune support is also typically present in puppy food. Once Pugs become adults, they are not as active as when they were pups, and they are not growing at exponential rates, if at all. Therefore, they need food with less protein than what puppies get. Pugs can typically switch to adult dog food between the ages of 9 and 12 months because much of their growth will be complete at this time. The tricky part is the actual process of switching your pooch from puppy to adult dog food. If not done slowly and intentionally, switching to a new food can cause digestion issues for your dog that could create messes around the house. Lethargy and nausea may follow. Finally, offer only adult food. There are many reasons why your Pug might seem like they do not have an appetite. The first thing to consider is whether you are overfeeding them. If your pooch does not want to eat their last meal of the day, they could simply be full and satisfied. However, other issues could lead to a pup not eating such as: Dental Problems. If your Pug has a toothache or some other kind of dental problem, they may not be comfortable eating. Check for red gums, bleeding, and tenderness throughout the mouth. If something unusual is detected, consult your veterinarian immediately for guidance. Recent Vaccinations. Vaccines can cause side effects, including a lack of appetite. So, if your Pug does not seem to want to eat for a day or two after getting vaccinated, this is normal. Uncomfortable Surroundings. If your pooch goes on an adventure with you and is expected to eat their meal in a situation that is not familiar to them, they may pass on the meal altogether in favor of waiting until they get to what they feel is a safe space to eat. Even if your dog seems fine in every other way, a lack of wanting to eat could mean an illness of some kind is brewing. If you cannot find any other reason for a lack of appetite, you should see your vet as soon as possible. Adult Pugs will generally eat about a cup of dry commercial dog food each day or the equivalent, although certain differences might scale this amount up or down as time goes on. Here are the most important factors to consider. Active vs. Sedentary More active dogs will require more food than those that tend to be sedentary. If your pooch takes multiple walks every day, spends a great deal of time playing with kids throughout the day, or enjoys outdoor time with family members each afternoon, chances are that your dog will need a little more food than the average pooch. If your pooch takes only one short walk each day and spends most of their time lounging around the house, chances are that they should be fed as sedentary dogs. Spayed vs. Neutered Sometimes, dogs that are not spayed or neutered eat more than the average pooch. This is because they tend to be more active and excitable, which results in the need for more calories to support their energy needs. Pregnancy Pregnant Pugs need up to twice the amount of food that an adult dog would need. Instead of feeding your pregnant dog puppy or adult food, consider a food designed for all life stages that indicates its suitability for pregnancy. This type of food offers more protein and fat than adult food to support the extra growth they go through, but not as much as puppy food, which could make them overweight after the birth. What Foods Are Bad for Pugs? Image By: Momentmal, Pixabay There are a few foods that you should never feed your Pug to ensure their good health and to avoid serious problems like poisoning and even death. Here are a few food items that should be avoided at all costs: Alcohol. Final Thoughts Due to their love of food, pugs would do anything for you as long as you will feed them in return. But the tragic aspect of the tale is that pugs gain weight fast, just like any other dog. You have to pay special attention to the way you feed your dog. The pug is a little dog, so even one more pound would change how it looks. I will go into detail on every feeding question you may have based on my personal experience working for a veterinarian. Pug Nutritional Requirements Pugs are small sized dogs that require the proper nutrients in their specific amount to grow healthy. Like other dog breeds, if some of these nutrients are present in excess amounts or less, it would end up endangering the overall health of your dog. The small size of a Pug will require adequate and quality nutrients to maintain its body weight and strong bones to support its massive frame. Anything short of this, can result in many health problems and prevent your dog from reaching its peak size. Their fat source can be from fish oil or vegetables. Their source of fiber can come from wholesome healthy vegetables like cabbages, carrots, sprouts, and broccoli. Pug puppies are incredibly energetic and have a high metabolism. They grow very fast and will require quality nutrients to keep up. They require protein for building healthy muscles and minerals for strong bones; carbohydrates for energy; and fats for maintaining a healthy fur. At this stage, Pug are most active and will need protein and carbohydrates to keep their weight and energy level optimal. However, you should avoid overfeeding your pet at this stage as Pugs are prone to obesity and will develop health complications. Senior Pugs will need more minerals and vitamins in their food to keep their immune system and bones healthy. Factors Affecting The Feeding of A Pug Some factors will affect the diet of your Pug, such as the size of the breed, its age, its activity level, and its underlying health conditions. Size consideration The average length of a Pug for males is 30—36 cm, and for females, it is 25—30 cm from the soles of its feet to its shoulder. The weight of a male Pug is kg and that of a female is kg. Male Pugs are generally bigger than female Pugs, which means that the male will require a larger intake of calories than the female to stay healthy and strong. Age consideration Pug puppies will require more calories during their growing stage due to their high metabolic rate. They need to be fed a lot if you want them to grow into strong, healthy dogs. Adult Pugs should not be fed more often than puppy Pug. Your senior Pug will be less active and require fewer calories than when they were younger. Doing otherwise might lead to obesity and other serious health problems. Activity Level Athletes are required to maintain a strict diet compared to non-athletes, so you should also keep your Pug away from certain foods if you want to maintain its athletic abilities. Health Consideration Pugs are prone to certain health conditions , which should be taken into consideration in their diets if you wish to manage or prevent those issues. These health problems could be avoided or mitigated by eating or avoiding certain foods from the start, rather than treating them as they arise. It might be tempting to cut corners and go for the cheapest food. But engaging in such an act in the long run could lead to pain, seeing your Pug sick, frequent visits to the vet, and thousands of dollars in expenses. Pug Feeding Quantity Your Pug, just like any other dog breed, will require different amounts of food according to their stage of development. The amount of food a puppy will need will be different than the amount of food an adult will need to meet their nutritional requirements. On average, feed your Pug puppy 0. However, this meal plan is not one-size-fits-all. How Much To Feed a Pug Puppy For your puppy and adolescent Pug to grow into healthy adults, the meal should be high in protein and low in fat, which can be obtained from animal meat. A Pug puppy should be given 0. The feeding requirement of your Pug puppy is given in detail in the charts below: Age. And the total number of dogs all breeds in the reports are .So while this is something that should be monitored and many more studies need to be done, it's important to keep in mind that this is a very small number compared to the estimated 77 million dogs in the U. The latest update is that there are no recalls at this moment that are linked to this issue. The Best Food for Pug Puppies and Adults What to Avoid: Quite a few ingredients that are found in a lot of dog food brands can be severely detrimental to a Pug and cause everything from allergic reactions itching, rashes, wheezing, running eyes, etc. Corn which includes as corn germ meal, corn gluten meal, and corn bran High grain counts which includes high levels of wheat, oats, barley, and other cereal grains which may be listed as hominy feed. And moist treats, meant to reward training and reinforce good behavior, should be given as needed. Now, the question remains on what to offer. All snacks and treats should be held to the same high standards that you have in place for your Pug's meals, meaning no synthetic preservatives, artificial coloring, artificial flavoring, soy, corn, by-products, high wheat levels, or generic meats. If your Pug's calorie intake needs to be carefully watched due to issues with weight gain, there will also be a need to opt for some low-calorie treats. Kibble, cans and specialty foods Proper Nutrition Since puppies need energy to grow big and strong, their food is higher in calories and packed with more nutrients. This includes more fat, protein, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids. So always choose a food that is labelled for puppies. Since a Pug is a small toy breed , they will grow very quickly and reach adulthood much faster than larger breeds. Toy dog breeds actually need more calories per pound than larger breeds due to their higher metabolic rates. The structure of their flat muzzle and facial folds , while appealing to look at, unfortunately causes a number of serious health problems. This causes soft tissue to block the airways, making breathing very difficult. Their jaws and teeth can also cause them problems. Remember, slimmer is better. How Often To Feed Your Pug Puppy I always recommend feeding puppies small meals at scheduled times several hours apart, and then decreasing the frequency as they get older. For puppies under six months go with something like 7am, 12noon, 3pm then 6pm. As they grow you can reduce this routine to three or even two times a day, but there is no harm continuing with multiple feedings as long as you dividing their daily rations evenly. Kibble vs Canned Food Dried puppy kibble is affordable, easy to store and transport, and readily available. Serving is as simple as opening the package and pouring it into the bowl. Canned or wet food will sometimes offer more meat protein and fewer carbohydrates than kibble does, but you will usually pay more as well. Wet food is also associated with an increase in periodontal diseases , which is not ideal for a dog already prone to these issues. Specialty Pug Puppy Foods The introduction of breed-specific formulas to the market has made it even more confusing. However, there are some Pug puppy formulations that address some of their health issues that might be worth considering. Some kibble is designed in a shape and texture that makes it easier for short-nosed puppies to pick up and chew easily. But the sad part of the story is that just like any other dog, pugs get obese very quickly. As they say, you become what you eat. Since the pug is a tiny dog, even one extra pound will affect its appearance. For this reason, it becomes important to keep a check on what your pug is eating. The present article talks about the feeding guidelines of this adorable dog: How much is too much? It is very important to feed your dog the correct amount of food to ensure that the pug is getting enough calories for proper growth. Any deviation from the right amount will led to health problems in a pug. Age, activity, metabolism and build of a dog are the major factors on which the amount of food which should be given to a dog depends. Also, the type of food you are giving to a dog is another important factor. If you are feeding home cooked food to one pug and commercial dog food to another dog with same age, build and activity level, it is not necessary that both of them will consume the same amount. As a general rule of thumb, a puppy pug should be given 1 ounce of food per one pound of body weight. For adult pugs, the amount is halved. What about calories? A pug puppy which is in his growth phase requires more calories than adult and senior pugs. On an average, a puppy requires 50 calories per pound of their body weight while an adult pug requires 40 calories per pound of their body weight. Senior pugs need fewer calories because of slow metabolism and less activity level. Free feeding is not recommended to the pug. The following table illustrates the right feeding regime and meal frequency for pugs: Age Amount of food given at one time No.

A mixed-breed can inherit any combination of traits from their parents. Should a Pug Mix take after their Pug parent, they will be an affectionate, social dog that loves their families. A Pug tends to be playful, social, friendly, and gentle. They thrive on attention and affection and tend to get along well with children, other pets, and other dogs. As long as they are well-socialized, they also tend to be open and friendly with strangers. They can be prone to barking and it can become a nuisance behavior if you do not train your dog to stop barking early on. If the other parent breed has a similar temperament, then you can expect the same from a Pug Mix. You still want to ask the breeder about the other parent breed as they will likely introduce their own potential quirks. You can also meet the mother in person to get a sense of her temperament and see the behavior she is modeling for her puppies. Although the breeder should have started socialization and training, it is up to you to continue to train and socialize a puppy once you get them home. Pugs are moderately adaptable dogs. Although they do well in apartments as well as larger homes, they are particularly sensitive to heat and cold as a snub-nosed dog breed. They also do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. If the other parent breed is similar, then you should be able to expect the same from a Pug Mix. The other parent breed could still introduce some traits that affect adaptability, so you do want to ask the breeder about them. Mixed-breed dogs can sometimes be healthier than purebred dogs, but it is not a guarantee. They can inherit none, some, or all of the conditions common to their parent breeds. From the Pug side, potential health conditions to be aware of include eye problems, luxating patella , encephalitis, and hip dysplasia. As a brachycephalic, or snub-nosed, dog, they are prone to allergies and respiratory issues. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues on to puppies. So, make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. A Pug is eager to please and tends to pick up on things quickly. They tend to be a good fit for owners of all experience levels. The other parent breed could make a Pug Mix easy to train or more difficult, so you want to make sure you ask the breeder about them. A Pug Mix can inherit a coat similar to one of their parents or a coat that is truly a mix of both. Should they inherit the Pug coat, it will shed a bit year-round, require weekly brushing, and the occasional bath. Cutting nails once or twice monthly keeps them from growing too long. Ear checks on a weekly basis with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. Brushing teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day in addition to cleanings at the vet as needed are ideal dental care for dogs. Pugs tend to sit in a low to moderate energy range. Usually, daily walks and some playtime are enough to keep them happy and healthy. They may be up for more activity, but can also get easily overheated. There are safe ways to exercise flat-faced dogs to help make sure they get enough activity. If the other parent breed also has a low to moderate activity level, then you can expect something similar from a Pug Mix. However, if the other parent breed is a higher energy dog, then you will want to make sure you are prepared for the potential of a high-energy dog. Fully-grown Pugs are usually inches tall and weigh pounds. The other parent breed can have a big effect on this, especially if they are the mother. Although it is not a guarantee, you can meet the mother in person to get an idea of what to expect in a fully-grown Pug Mix. A Pug generally lives for years. Daisy and Brock are a beautiful mother and son pair who love to snuggle together and cuddle. They are both sweet, happy, and friendly. They adore getting attention from anyone they meet during their walks and easily draw people in with their sunny personalities and soft silky coats. They have settled into an easy routine in their foster home and relish their walks every day and visits to the dog park. During their walks Brock clocks roughly twice the mileage of foster mom and Daisy with his side-to-side walking style. Neither is true! These pups love to live it up at the dog park where they show off their speed as Brock sprints and dives after his Kong frisbee, often grabbing it taco style, while Daisy relishes fetching an orange Chuck-It ball before eventually resting to chew on it. Brock is also a master at tug-of-war who has learned to drop it sometimes after repeated requests so it can be thrown again. Brock is extra special because he was born without a tail, which causes him to be incontinent. Inside the house he wears diapers and a belly band, and his incontinence is easily managed. When coming inside from a walk, Brock waits patiently for his diaper to be put on. Daisy and Brock took time to smell the roses and ponder life. While happy to be in a foster home, they would love to find their forever home. Please open your mind and your heart to considering adopting these two gorgeous pups. The goal of this cross-breed is to get a dog with the laid-back, comedic personality of the Pug and the Beagle, but with the longer Beagle snout to reduce respiratory problems. A cross-breed can take on any combination of traits from one or both of the parents. But, overall, a Puggle tends to be a loving, friendly dog with a playful personality. Although the Puggle is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, they are recognized by other notable dog organizations like the American Canine Hybrid Club. The Puggle tends to be a cuddler that loves their family. They tend to get along with just about everyone including children, other dogs, and strangers. In this case, extra training, socialization, and introduction may be necessary for your Puggle to recognize smaller other pets as family and not something to chase. They can be prone to howling if they take after their Beagle parent. They can also be prone to barking, which makes them good watchdogs. But, they are social and more interested in making friends, so they do not make good guard dogs. Training early on can help curb incessant barking and howling to keep it as an alert instead of a nuisance. The Puggle is a highly adaptable dog breed. They do well in both apartments and larger homes as long as they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and affection. If they inherit the urge to wander common to the Beagle, they should only be let off-leash in securely fenced areas. Puggles do well in moderate climates. As with any dog breed, they are sensitive to heat. They also do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. With a cross-breed, they can inherit the potential health concerns from one, both, or neither of the parent breeds. For the Puggle, these potential health concerns include stenotic nares, which are also called pinched nostrils, hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, epilepsy, hypothyroidism , and cherry eye. If your Puggle has the shorter snout of the Pug, they may also have the same respiratory issues that affect all brachycephalic dogs. You can also ask to see any relevant health clearances or test results. Although the Puggle tends to be eager to please and easy to train, they can sometimes be stubborn. These intelligent dogs pick up on things quickly and respond well to training, which makes them a good fit for owners of all experience levels. However, if they inherit a stubborn streak, it can be an obstacle during training. Plus, these classes offer some great opportunities to socialize a puppy. The Puggle has a double coat that is short and smooth. They will shed moderately year-round with heavier shedding sessions twice a year. Bathing is occasional and on an as-needed basis. They should not be showing redness or have any discharge. Check their face wrinkles regularly to make sure they are clean, dry, and free of debris. Also, make sure to dry between them thoroughly after a bath to help prevent skin irritation. The Puggle has a moderate activity level. Daily walks plus some playtime or extra activity is usually enough to keep this dog happy and healthy. They enjoy spending time with you, so they may be up for more activity if you are. Your Puggle may enjoy trips to the dog park, playing frisbee, or even training for dogs sports like agility. A fully-grown Puggle usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs pounds. A Puggle generally lives years. The first registered Puggle harkens back to a Wisconsin breeder in the s. Puggle Puppies for Sale Thanks for visiting our Puggle page! Sadly, Pitbull Pug puppies are likely to inherit these concerning problems. Their Pit parents hate to be left alone for long periods, so their mixed offspring might feel the same. Once they get bored, you might be shocked to find out that your favorite shoes, furniture, or other valuable things could get chewed up. Ultimately, your decision will also vary depending on your lifestyle. It can become a heavy responsibility, so be sure to weigh the pros and cons before bringing a Pug-a-Pit mix into your life. Lifespan Sociability If you are interested in one of these adorable pups, you will find an active, snarling, rambunctious puppy much like any other young dog. Bred from two purebred canines, the hybrid Pug Pit is best described by looking at their parents. For example, the American Pitbull Terrier is an active, intelligent, and loyal breed that has had a bad rep for being aggressive. Once used as a fighting dog, this breed is not likely to attack or bite a human. Instead, they love to cuddle, be part of the group, and play. On the Pug side, you will find another intelligent and loyal dog that is playful, friendly, and sweet. When you combine these two breeds, you end up with a puppy that is eager to play, cuddle on your lap, and go for rides. They also need to be trained as early as possible. As both of their parents can have a stubborn streak, you will need to have a lot of patience and kindness. If you are a new pet parent, this pooch might not be the best candidate for you. Usually, they are smaller in the body than a Pit but larger than a Pug making them an average or medium size dog. Accommodations When you think of a Pitbull, you typically think of needing a lot of space for them to stretch their legs. The Pug Pit has an average energy level, and they will be comfortable in a house, condo, or apartment as long as they get proper exercise. This leads to a dog that is intelligent, quick to learn, and very comfortable sitting on your regardless of their size! First, they are very loyal and protective. Any strangers that come unannounced will not be met with a wagging tail. That being said, they are not known to be aggressive. Instead, you will get a bark and perhaps a growl. Although they are not aggressive and unlikely to bite, their Pitbull nature gives them a bit of a prey drive. In that sense, they will chase smaller animals. That being said, they will also protect you from other animals including strange dogs. Of course, they react the same way to a balloon, paper towel, or anything else they feel is suspicious. Outside of that, these pups are sweet, gentle, and loving. Their fearless nature also helps in their protective instincts. Something else you should note about this pooch is their stubbornness. Both of their parents have this trait. They will need to be treated with firm kindness with a strong alpha leader; hence they are not recommended for the novice. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They enjoy the general chaos of a large family with kids. They are also good with kids of all ages. They will become very protective of children, as well. However, socializing your dog in their puppy years is important for a well-rounded pet. This is a medium-sized dog that can knock a kid over by accident, too. Single Families On the other hand, this pooch will do well with a single-person household. They will become very attached to their owner and be more protective than ever. If you are single, it is even more important that you properly socialize your Pug Pit. This is one instance where they can have some social and separation anxiety. Getting them used to other people and pets will help them feel more confident on their own and in mixed company. That being said, the Pug Pit is usually better off as the only dog. They can have some territorial and jealous quirks that make it more difficult to rub along well with a canine roommate. They get along with other pets such as cats, however. Again, socialization is key. You may also see them bossing your feline around and being greedy with their toys, food, and your time. Interestingly, the Pug Pit does well with other dogs outside of the home. They can be quite friendly and enjoy a good romp in the park with another furry friend. As a medium-sized dog with an average to high energy level, their meals should reflect their lifestyle. Luckily, this pup does not have a lot of food allergies or restrictions you need to be careful of, but they are prone to weight gain. With that in mind, you want to go for foods that are high in lean protein and healthy fats. Stay away from meals with a lot of sugar and carbs. You also want to look for foods with fiber , antioxidants, omega fatty acids, and glucosamine. Additional vitamins and minerals are also necessary. On average, this pup will eat about a cup and a half of food twice a day. They also need treats and other healthy snacks throughout the day. It is important to consult your vet about their diet, though. As your pet moves from their puppy years into adulthood, their nutritional needs will change. Talk to your vet about the best meals to promote their overall health. We reviewed the best multivitamins for dogs — check out our top picks here! For the most part, two outings per day will keep them content. A minute walk in the morning and a minute romp in the park in the afternoon is typically sufficient. Beyond that, they will also need some indoor or backyard playtime. Spending some time throwing a ball to your pet will do wonders. As we talked about before, this pooch is okay to spend some time alone, as well. It is important, though, that you provide them with toys. Bones or other toys they can chew on are essential. They can bark, chew, dig, and show other behaviors you will not be happy about. They can also become more stubborn, aggressive, and depressed. Being bored is not a good state for them to be in as they will find ways to entertain themselves. As you probably guessed, this breed is not a good candidate to be a backyard dog. Spending time outside alone is not off-limits, though. You need to be careful of overheating with this breed. This is especially true if they have the upturned snout of the Pug. Shade and plenty of water are important along with rest when the weather is hot and humid. Additionally, the Pug Pit has a short fur coat that is not equipped for freezing temperatures. In fact, they are not a fan of the cold, whatsoever. They will need a coat or sweater if they will be outside for extended periods. You can also think about socks or snowshoes when there is ice or snow on the ground. Again, make sure not to overdo it in extreme climates. That is something you should know right away. Although they are very intelligent, they will want to do things their way. It is more about being consistent and rewarding positive behaviors. On the other hand, positive reinforcement does wonders with this breed. Tossing them a treat when they do well will help them pick up the rules quickly. You can use this method for behavioral, obedience, and social training. Just keep in mind, you will not be able to train your pup in a day or even a week. Consistency and repetition are key. Spend a few minutes a few times a day on these activities, and they will pick it up. If you feel more frustrated on a particular day, let it go and start fresh tomorrow. Remember, they take their cues from you! With their short, straight fur, they do not produce a lot of shed. You should give them a good brush with a slicker bristle brush a few times a week. You may need to do it more often during the change of seasons, however. You can also restrict baths to an as-needed basis. You do not want to throw them in the tub too often as it can strip their fur of its natural oils that are used to keep their fur shiny and soft. You also want to make sure they are dried completely when the weather is cold to keep them from catching a chill. Ears, Teeth, and Paws You will also want to check their ears a few times a week for signs of infection, mites, and other debris. You can wipe their ears clean with a cotton ball or other soft cloth, and a dog ear cleaning solution. Additionally, you must check their teeth. Brushing as often as possible is recommended. This pup can have some gnarly puppy breath, so dental treats are also advised. Finally, you will need to trim their nails. A guillotine trimmer usually works best. How often this is done can vary. If you take your pooch out often, their nails will take longer to grow as they are being naturally filed down. This is especially true if you live in a rural area where they are walking on a lot of pavement. Keep in mind, if you start a grooming routine when your dog is a puppy, they will get used to it quickly, and most even come to enjoy it. On the other hand, if you adopt an older dog who is not used to grooming, there is nothing wrong with seeking help. Trimming their nails can be especially tough. Unfortunately, if a parent is predisposed to illness, their offspring is likely to be, as well. Below, we have outlined the more serious and minor health conditions you could run into with your pet. If you find it hard to train your pup, hire a professional trainer as training these pups is essential if you want a family-friendly dog. During the shedding season, this could be 2 to 3 times a week. Use slicker brushes for this process. Take care of their paws regularly. Trim their nails every 3 to 4 weeks or whenever you hear them clicking across surfaces. Clean their ears and the ear canal thoroughly every 1 to 2 weeks.
