Those of us who have had English Bulldogs for several years still remember our first English Bulldog and how much we didn't know about English Bulldogs. All of the information below is from years of researching the English Bulldog on the internet, reading books and journals, and over 15 years of breeding and raising English Bulldogs. This information can be helpful in solving minor problems, but always consult your veterinarian before treating even the simplest problem with your English Bulldog. Like all babies, the English Bulldog puppy needs lots of love and cuddling, lots of rest and sleep, lots of good, nourishing food and more love and cuddling. Moving to a new home, leaving his dam and litter mates and the only humans your English Bulldog puppy has ever really known is a very traumatic experience for English Bulldog puppies, so try to make the move as easy as possible for your English Bulldog puppy. For the first couple of weeks, try not to change your English Bulldog puppy's life style if at all possible. Follow the English Bulldog breeders feeding routine. Most English Bulldogs do well on one meal a day. Some do better on two meals a day. You may prefer to feed in the morning or the evening. This is up to you. If you like it and your English Bulldog likes it, it's the right way. An English Bulldog usually eats puppy food until it is at least one year old. If your English Bulldog is thriving on puppy food and not getting to overweight, leave him on it until he is at least two years old. All vegetable or canola oil is best - do not give your English Bulldog any oil which contains soybean oil. You may also give your English Bulldog a vitamin supplement. DO NOT over dose. If the directions say "one a day", two is not better. You may also give your English Bulldog a vitamin C tablet - units per day. Supplements to be very careful with are Vitamins E, D and A. Overdoses of these can cause trouble for your English Bulldog. If you plan to breed a female English Bulldog, vitamin B complex, including folic acid, is recommended, but again be careful not to overdose your English Bulldog. Treats for your English Bulldog should usually be dog treats without any soy. English Bulldog Equipment There are several things which will make life easier and more enjoyable for you and your English Bulldog. First in importance is a wire crate. This comes very close to being a necessity for English Bulldogs. It is much easier to house train an English Bulldog puppy if he sleeps in a crate. If you travel at all with your English Bulldog, he is more safe and happier riding in a crate. If you are staying overnight your English Bulldog has a place of his own to sleep in. It is just as important for your English Bulldog to be in a crate in the car as it is for you to wear your seat belt. If you do not have a crate, or one won't fit into your car, get your English Bulldog a dog safety car harness. English Bulldogs like to have a special "my place" so if you don't have a crate, try one, you and your English Bulldog will like it. If you travel with your English Bulldog you'll need a large insulated water jug so that you'll have "home" water available for him. A small water pan that hooks to the side of his crate is ideal for traveling. A rocking chair or a really comfortable big chair you can sit in and cuddle your new English Bulldog puppy, this makes for great bonding time with your new English Bulldog puppy. A food dish with straight sides and flat bottom. The best material is stainless steel - avoid plastic with English Bulldogs whenever possible. A water dish, stainless steel is best again for English Bulldogs. A collar and a lead. A light weight, small link "choke" collar is best for an English Bulldog puppy. It should be long enough to slip over the English Bulldog puppy's head with room to spare but should not have more than a six inch "tail" when around his neck. The English Bulldog puppy's first lead should be a light weight one, you'll need a strong leather lead as he grows into an adult English Bulldog. A grooming table makes brushing, nail trimming, whisker clipping, medication, etc. Start your English Bulldog puppy out young and he'll soon learn to stand still with his neck in the noose and your life will be much easier. A puppy pen. Even though you have a fenced yard, you may want to confine your English Bulldog puppy to or out of a particular area. Puppy pens are easily portable and very handy for keeping an English Bulldog puppy confined to a small area. They are especially useful for a winter English Bulldog puppy. You can put his bed in his crate, put the crate in a puppy pen and put his pee-pee pads in a corner of the pen. If you plan to exhibit your English Bulldog you will need a pair of whisker scissors. These are small, sharp, blunt end scissors which you can purchase from a pet store, a dog show vendor or a dog supply catalog. A good brush. You can use almost any brush on an English Bulldog but the best ones have flexible rubber bristles. You want one small enough to fit your hand comfortably. Lemon Juice- If your English Bulldog gets phlegm in his throat and chokes on it, a couple squirts of juice from the plastic lemon will help clear it out. Clear Eyes, Visine, etc. Aspirin- For minor aches and pains. Most English Bulldogs can tolerate aspirin but do not give any other human pain reliever such as Tylenol or Advil. Remember that the dosage for aspirin, like most pain relief medication, is based primarily on body weight. An English Bulldog should never be given more than one tablet at a time or more frequently than every twelve hours. Some English Bulldogs are allergic to aspirin, so only use aspirin under the advise and care of a veterinarian. Benadryl- Either capsule or liquid. Use this if the English bulldog is stung by a bee or other insect, and for minor English Bulldog allergies as recommended by your veterinarian. Panalog Ointment- A good all purpose ointment for minor English Bulldog skin afflictions. Also good for cleaning English Bulldog wrinkles, tail pockets and ears. Bag Balm- Also useful for minor English Bulldog skin afflictions. Pepto Bismol- For minor stomach upset of your English Bulldog. Q-tips- Use for applying medication and cleaning your English Bulldogs ears. Cotton balls- Use for applying medication, for cleaning and to keep the ears of your English Bulldog dry while bathing. Even English Bulldog puppies can tear a piece off the rawhide and choke on it. English Bulldog Puppies like knotted socks to shake and play tug of war with. They also like Nylabone and rubber toys. Many English Bulldog puppies like to play with balls, but be sure the ball is too big to lodge in the throat or be swallowed. Most English Bulldogs love the Kong toys, and you can fill them with treats and watch your English Bulldog play for hours. English Bulldog puppies like cotton tug toys but be careful not to let the stuffing of any toy be swallowed by your English Bulldog puppy. Some people give their English Bulldog puppies and adult English Bulldogs Choo-Hooves and English Bulldogs really like them, but be cautious with these. They are an "only when I can watch you" English Bulldog toy. The only real difference between the toys for an English Bulldog puppy and the toys for an adult English Bulldog is size. Always discard any toy that you think your English Bulldog might swallow! Your English Bulldog should be thoroughly brushed at least three times a week. Most English Bulldogs love to be brushed. Use a soft bristle or rubber brush. Start at the rear and brush against the hair. After you've brushed the entire English Bulldog against the grain, brush it with the grain. Follow this with a good rub down. During shedding time, spring and fall, you may need to brush your English Bulldog more often, give more frequent rubdowns. The idea is to remove the dead hair and distribute the natural oils produced by your English Bulldog. Bathing Your English Bulldog An English Bulldog that receives frequent brushings and rubdowns does not need frequent bathing. Most English Bulldog owners bathe their English Bulldogs when the dog is dirty - when it obviously needs a bath. Of course, if you are exhibiting your English Bulldog he needs a bath before he goes to the show. An English Bulldog in the show ring should be clean and well groomed. Where do you bathe an English Bulldog? Any place you want to and can! Some people have a big deep sink, some use the bath tub, some use the kitchen sink, in the summer some wash their English Bulldog on the lawn. I prefer the Booster Bath, your English Bulldog can walk right up the ramp which also doubles as a booster for puppies and saves your back from stooping down to bathe your English Bulldog. You need a place where you can control your English Bulldog, where you can easily control the water supply and where you can rinse your English Bulldog thoroughly and the Booster Bath provides all of this for you. It's a good idea, especially with a puppy, to take the dog outside to "potty" just before you bathe him. Gather up all the things you will need to bathe your English Bulldog before you start. You will need: a mild tear-free shampoo, any rinses you plan to use, cotton balls, Q-tips, eye ointment or mineral oil, Vaseline, wash cloth, and towels. Most use a special whitening shampoo for white English Bulldogs. You may on occasion need to use a flea shampoo but since these are quite harsh, don't use one on your English Bulldog unless you really need to. Put a couple of drops of mineral oil or a bit of eye ointment in the eyes of your English Bulldog and place a cotton ball securely in each ear before you wet your English Bulldog. Wet your English Bulldog thoroughly from just behind the ears to the tips of the toes on his hind legs. Be sure his underside of your English Bulldog is wet, too, not just the top and sides. Apply the shampoo starting at the neck of your English Bulldog and working back. Work the shampoo in to be sure you get all the way through the hair to the skin of your English Bulldog. Pay special attention to the paws of your English Bulldog wash between the toes , his tail clean all around the base , and the genital area. On a female, be especially careful to clean the vulva. Put some shampoo on the washcloth and wash your English Bulldog's face. Wash the wrinkles over the nose, on the forehead, around the nose and under the eyes. Wash his nose. Wash his ears, inside and out. Now rinse. Rinse until you are sure every bit of your English Bulldog, especially in the wrinkles and tight places, is thoroughly rinsed and there is no shampoo left any place. If you are applying a rinse to your English Bulldog, do it now, following the manufactures instructions. For a white English Bulldog, you can use a rinse of 4 Tbsp. Mix enough bluing into the water to get a darkish blue not black. Pour the bluing mixture over your white English Bulldog and work in with your fingertips. Do not rinse off the solution. Do not towel dry, let your white English bulldog drip dry. For red dogs, try VO5 Henna Conditioner. Dry your English Bulldog with towels. Take the cotton balls out of your English Bulldog's ears and clean any wax carefully using a dry Q-Tip or one with a dab of Panalog. Rub a dab of Vaseline onto his nose to help keep it soft. You can then let your English Bulldog air dry or use a hair dryer to finish the drying. It's best to keep the English Bulldog inside until it is completely dry - about two hours. English Bulldog Nails Most English Bulldogs need their nails cut on a regular basis - about every two weeks. The nails should be kept as short as possible on your English Bulldog. You may use dog nail clippers or an electric grinder. Most English Bulldog owners use the clippers, either guillotine or scissors type. Which type you use on your English Bulldog is up to you, but they should be sharp. When the blade begins to dull, replace it or buy new clippers - dull blades can be painful to your English Bulldog. Each English Bulldog owner seems to have a different way to clip nails. Find the way that works best for you. The important thing is to be able to control your English Bulldog so that you do not hurt it. A grooming table is probably the best way to control your English Bulldog. On white nails you can see where the quick begins. On black nails cut just to the curve of the nail. Clippers usually leave a rough edge, so a good dog nail file to smooth them off will work fine. If you use en electric grinder, be very, very careful not to grind into the quick. The main thing is to make the experience as pleasant as possible for your English bulldog so be really careful when cutting nails and don't cut into the quick. If your English Bulldog takes frequent walks on pavement or concrete sidewalks, it will usually wear the nails down, so again, be careful, there may not be very much nail to cut. Especially the black nails which seem to wear more than the white ones. English Bulldog Wrinkles English Bulldogs tend to have messy face wrinkles. The older your English Bulldog gets, the messier the wrinkles. How often you clean these wrinkles depends on your English Bulldog itself. Some English Bulldogs do very well if you clean the wrinkles a couple of times a week. Some English Bulldogs need it on a daily basis. When you clean the wrinkles, wash his nose and apply a good rub of Vaseline to keep it soft. It's better to clean your English Bulldog more often than you think you need to than not to clean your English Bulldog often enough. You can clean the wrinkles of your English Bulldog with a soft, damp cloth and then dry. Or you can wash them using the shampoo you use to bathe your English Bulldog. Be sure to rinse thoroughly and dry thoroughly. One of the best ways is to wipe the wrinkles of your English Bulldog clean is with Baby Wipes with lanolin and aloe. Whatever method you use to clean the wrinkles of your English Bulldog, be sure to get the deep nose wrinkle clean. You may need to put a soothing ointment in the deep nose wrinkle of some English Bulldogs. If it is irritated, Panalog will help to heal. By practicing the recall inside and calling him over then letting him go back to playing outside, his owners will quickly eliminate his resistance to the recall. Next I went to go meet Kodi. He reacted as soon as he saw me. His energy spiked and he started barking while lowering his head, baring his teeth and making some intense eye contact. I went over to his kennel and sat down with my back to it. As soon as I did this, he calmed down and stopped most of the barking, but only for as long as I remained sitting with my back to him. Each time I got up, his energy and intensity rose as well. While she is very sweet and loving, she is also very high energy and used to be excitable. His owner had adopted a harness to better control him after a failed attempt at a gentle leader. This leash collar use stops most dogs from pulling immediately. Because the leash position provides a different sensation, it pulls the dog a little off center. This usually settles a dog down and makes it more susceptible to following your lead. So you have an owner who now feels more confident as they have the dog doing what they want; walking beside them and not pulling. She starts out a bit whiny, then will progresses to bounding off the crate sides and howling like the hound of the baskervilles. She does the same thing in the crate in the car. Will she just get over this or is this building a fear of her crate? After his arrival and our integration period, it was time for him to go to the crate. Day 11 — gave the command and he went to the crate like a rockstar. Then day 12 arrived, gave the command for the crate and nothing. I knew I was not supposed to make it a negative experience and what was I to do? I was told that this was an easy fix and would be resolved as soon as we got off the phone. Long story short, it was an easy fix. By the time they got done telling me that going to his crate was not an option and that no matter what, when I gave the crate command — he was going in and that was that. Emboldened by this new found confidence after I got off the phone with them, I gave the command with the full knowledge that he was going in the crate…. The difference for me was, I knew it was a safe place, I knew he was going in, and therefore the confidence with which I directed him to the crate communicated to him this was not a negotiable — he went in like a rockstar, no problem. As to the whining and desire to be out with the rest of the pack, it is critical that whining does not precede getting out of the crate. The dog must be calm and quiet before exiting the crate and opening the door does not mean, run free. Opening the door means, the dog waits for the release command and then the dog exits. Getting there may be a challenge. You may have to work in short periods of time being consistent in not letting the dog out when it is whining. You have to wait for a quiet period and then praise and release the dog so there is no connection between whining and getting out of the crate. As you know the crate is a safe place, and assuming the dog is not sick or needing to relieve itself, there is no need for whining. For me, this was a mindset change. While in the crate I knew he was not sick or injured, should not need to relive himself, therefore I can ignore the whining. I did, it worked. Follow up when the dog calms — mark the desired behavior and you should see more of it and for longer periods of time until one day you forget it was ever an issue. Sounds from surrounding areas such as construction activities and other traffic sounds might also cause anxiety in your Lab. All these new things can make your Lab a bit scary. Hence it is important to habituate your Lab to all these new things in and around the apartment. When you have a house with a backyard, your Lab has a chance to get rid of its boredom by playing in nature and enjoying itself. When left in a garden, my Lab plays by running through the garden and tries to sniff every plant and flower present over there. It is his way of playing and enjoying. However, the big takeaways are that Labs will likely reach upwards of 70 pounds and they grow very quickly. Much of their growth occurs in their first year. A dog of this size can make smaller spaces a challenge! You have to consider that it's not just the size of your Lab himself, but additionally the size of his toys, food containers, crate, bed and so on. If you will be living in a larger apartment, then this may not be as big of an issue. Size of your household Another big factor, no pun intended, is the size of your family. Your human family, that is! When we first got Molly, we were in a smaller sized home and it was a real challenge. We were also a family of 5, so even though our home was bigger than most 3 bedroom apartments, it was still a problem. I wouldn't have thought that space would have been such a big deal, but given that we aren't all stationary it becomes more important than one would think. When we think about having an apartment dog, we picture hanging out on the couch with our buddy by our side. What we don't think about is moving around from room to room. Or, our kids playing and running across the house. Or even that our Lab will start out as a highly energetic puppy that also wants to run! So indoor space, or lack thereof, is huge. If you live alone and your space will be under 1, square feet I would strongly consider a smaller breed. If your family consists of more than just you in that same space, I would wait. Lack of private outdoor space Apartment living almost always means that you will not have any private outdoor space. It certainly won't be something that is closed off, so even if you land a unit that has a back porch with some open field - it's not YOUR field! This is a problem for a breed such as a Lab. Labs need open space to run Labradors are working dogs and really need the room to run. Especially during their younger puppy years. Labs will have high, puppy-level energy for generally the first years of their lives. Not having an ability to just let them run out back for awhile creates tremendous challenges. This problem is compounded once you realize that it doesn't stop there. Not only can you not simply open up the back door to let your Lab run free, but most apartment complexes won't have any area on the property that will allow you to do this. The end result is a sporting dog breed that is unable to behave in a way that is natural to them for most of their waking hours. Don't forget the leash laws I also found that most apartment complexes will have very strict leash rules. Even if you're comfortable with your Lab taking a quick potty break leashless, they may not be! Plus, with the close proximity of your neighbors, and potentially other dogs, this could lead to even bigger trouble! For me, this one is a deal breaker. Even if you're fortunate to have a dog park nearby, it most likely wouldn't be reasonable to make that trip daily. It just isn't as convenient as having a yard of our own. This likely results in your Lab suffering, and in some cases can lead to destructive behavior as a result of reduced activity. Labradors are loud apartment dogs One of the greatest benefits of having a large dog is the security benefits. The loud bark will serve as a deterrent for any unwanted "visitors", but of course can be a nuisance for owners on a daily basis. Herein lies the problem when it comes to considering Labs as apartment dogs. I have lived in several apartments throughout my younger years. Apartment living teaches you a lot about common courtesy. You are literally surrounded by others, on all sides, at all times. At some point, you will likely be on the delivering end as well as the receiving end of excessive noise. Having Labradors as apartment dogs would probably skew this, and there's a good chance you'll wind up being "that" neighbor. It doesn't take much I found through my experience with Molly that it really doesn't take much to get her going. Whether it is a simple doorbell on a commercial, to an unexpected knock, and even the sound of dogs nearby - she goes absolutely bananas. Oh, and heaven forbid we struggle in the slightest to get the key in the door after a grocery run! Sound all the alarms! Having this occur multiple times per day will create havoc with your neighbors. Bear in mind, these are all natural reactions from a fully grown adult Lab. Consider the possibility that whining and crying might occur overnight or while you may be away during the puppy phase. This is asking for trouble. Additionally, with their large size simply running and playing across the room can be disturbing as well. Remember, your Lab will have that built up energy as a result of having no outdoor space. It is not reasonable to expect them to not try and exert anything, so playtime will likely occur indoors quite often. Don't be that neighbor. Labradors in apartments can be costly Depending on your town, apartment hunting in and of itself can be challenging. Trying to find one in the right location and at the right price for your budget can at times be a daunting task. Once you throw in additional complexities, like trying to accommodate pets, it can be an even bigger headache. Lease restrictions I have found that many apartment complexes choose to place restrictions on the type of dogs that they will allow their tenants to have. Many times the restrictions they place are on specific breeds, but I have also seen size be one of the factors that they use to exclude within their lease agreements. You will need to be aware of this and clarify with your leasing office ahead of time. It would be an awful scenario to find yourself in if you were forced to choose between finding a new home in 30 days or giving up your Lab - all because you failed to abide by the lease agreement. Security deposits Assuming that you find an apartment that will allow Labs, you will likely be faced with a sizeable security deposit. In many cases, these deposits are the equivalent of one months rent! This is common practice, and is not unique to Labs. However, you have to consider the likeliness of losing your deposit. While the temperament of Labs is generally very good, you may be at a greater risk of losing your deposit depending on how long you stay in the apartment. The lack of room to run often leads to dogs finding alternative ways to exert energy. Sometimes, this comes in the form of destruction. In my experience it has started with the ripping apart of toys. Then, it proceeded into destroying a doggy bed. What finally drew the line was when our furniture became the next target! Also, we have to address the concerns around pet stains. Pets have accidents. No matter how careful you are, you will likely have pee, poop, and vomit to clean up at some point during your stay. Things happen. A couple of episodes of this can be the end of a security deposit. Remember, it's management's discretion as to whether "additional care" needed to go into cleaning your carpets. Health Concerns Last, but certainly not least is the negative effects on health. While some things aren't specific to apartment living, others are. Being locked up all day Often, apartment living is attributed to specific lifestyle situations. Many of these are situations where owners live alone and are gone all day. The result in these scenarios is a Labrador who more often than not feels neglected. This can lead to lethargy and loss of appetite with simultaneous weight gain due to no activity. None of these are good for your dog's physical and mental well-being. Labradors can feel separation anxiety, as I wrote about in this article: Ease Your Dog's Separation Anxiety, and as you can imagine this can take a toll on their mental health. This is a problem regardless of whether or not you crate train your dog. I recall being forced into this situation with another dog that I had in the early years of college. After a couple of months of a hectic school schedule, I was forced to make a choice that I didn't want to. Ultimately, it was in my dog's best interest to no longer live with me. The schedule I had to maintain just didn't make sense, and I recognized that I was not able to be there for him. I had to give him up for his own good. Trust me when I tell you that this is not a situation you want to find yourself in. Eating something dangerous In situations where your dog is left alone all day and they are not crate trained, this is a big concern. Couple the potential feelings of anxiety with the lack of proper exercise and energy exertion and things can go very badly. I had a friend who had this very situation. When his wife returned home from work one evening, she found her kitchen floor covered in trash. The dog had gotten into the trashcan, and had consumed chicken bones. I'm happy to report that the dog ended up being okay. This could happen from destroying toys, clothes, furniture - you name it. Again, if your living situation will be different and someone will be home quite often, then this shouldn't be a factor for you in determining if Labradors will be good apartment dogs. Stair climbing I think it is important to consider that if you won't be living on the bottom floor of an apartment, stairs could be a real challenge for your Lab. As we know, hip dysplasia is a common problem among Labradors as they age. Having to repeatedly climb stairs throughout the day can exacerbate any problems your Lab is already having. I also would think this added stress to an otherwise healthy Labrador could take it's toll over time. What you can do to overcome the challenges As I explained above, I recognize the fact that while I do not think Labradors make good apartment dogs, there may be times where a situation is unavoidable. In those cases, I wanted to share some ideas that I think could make the best of an unfavorable situation. Size limitations tip I thought for quite some time about how you reduce the size of your Lab. Unfortunately, I was unable to come up with any workable solutions! However, I spent some time thinking about some of the other things that I mentioned above with size, and it reminded me of something I saw on Pinterest. One of the biggest items you'll have to carry with a Lab is the Extra Large dog crate. I saw some pretty neat ideas on how some people created a DIY crate enclosure. Essentially, this allowed them to use the top of the crate for another purpose. This could come in handy with limited space! There are also crates that you can buy that come as dual-purposed. See my Recommended Products for an example. Lack of outdoor space ideas Overcoming the fact that you don't have a private back yard is a challenging feat. Simply put, nothing will replace the benefit of having that space. However, for the purposes of simply making sure your Lab is able to get the needed exercise I have a few key recommendations: Find a local dog park - Membership dog parks are a great option, especially if you can find one nearby. While I recognize that the additional cost might hurt the wallet, it is my experience that in the long run these are better. Too many problems occur at parks where anyone can just show up. Often times owners will allow their dogs to run rampant while they browse social media. This can be extremely frustrating. Additionally, you don't have any sense of security that all dogs in attendance are healthy with up to date shot records. Paid parks typically collect your information and provide you with an access key. The one I use will shut down my access if you don't provide updated health records. Run with your Lab - Labs can be great running partners. If you're into running at all then this is a no brainer. If you're not, but could stand to get a little more exercise than you do, then you've got a live-in workout buddy! Choose the right toys - Make sure the toys that you keep in the apartment are stimulating for your dog. I have found that toys that make a dog think can help in these environments. The best example is utilizing a Kong with a treat inside. If the right size combination is used, this can serve as a strategy game that lasts for hours on end. While I am no expert, I've seen Molly completely exhaust herself trying to solve the problem! Loudness This is the one area that I think would cause the most trouble, even with mitigation tips. A Labrador's bark is loud. I would never want to see anyone even attempt to condition a dog to never bark under any circumstance, nor do I think it's a reasonable strategy. So in my estimation, the best thing we could do is train our Labs to halt their barking with a specific sound or signal. This will work wonders when you are home. However, the biggest challenge we face in the apartment living scenario is how often we won't be home. No amount of training will stop a barking fit if nobody is there to give the command! Nonetheless, I would recommend establishing that command for when you are home. There is nothing more frustrating than constantly shushing your Lab, only for her to give another single bark or growl in defiance! Ask me how I know! You must be completely transparent about your household when looking into apartment living. It should be crystal clear to the property management that you have a large dog before you ever sign a lease. In fact, given that most complexes charge application fees you should ensure this is understood and discussed before wasting money on an application. After having checked the box to ensure having your Lab there is within the rules this includes actually reading the Pet Policy in the lease agreement , it will simply become mitigation tactics. Cartilage damage or loss can lead to the development of arthritis in these joints and can be very painful. Hip and elbow dysplasia can be inherited genetically, so responsible breeders should screen parents for this condition. Hip and elbow dysplasia can also be caused by excess weight, which Labrador Retrievers are unfortunately also prone to as well. If your apartment is on a higher floor and your only access to it is stairs, definitely reconsider choosing a Labrador as your companion. Do Labradors Need a Back Yard? Technically speaking, a Labrador Retriever does not require a backyard in your home if and only if you have a dog park or something similar nearby. The Labrador breed is very energetic and needs a ton of exercise. Multiple walks a day are ideal, and space to run and play will expend all of that pent-up Labrador energy. At the minimum, a Labrador should get at least two minute walks each day. If your Labrador does not have space to expend energy, it can get bored. And boredom with a Labrador can lead to destructive behavior, such as chewing your household items. Be sure to locate the closest dog park or other area near your apartment where your Labrador can have some off-leash play time! Are Labradors Apartment Friendly? In addition, some apartments might have size limits on the type of dog allowed to live in your apartment. Do your neighbors have dogs? Is there a grassy area for quick bathroom breaks? Are you close to a busy street? Noise and Apartment Living Many apartments share one or more walls with neighbors. While generally not considered a barking breed, a Labrador may bark a lot when bored. If you are gone for long stretches of time, a Labrador may experience separation anxiety.
