Articles Labrador Retrievers are among my favorite dog breeds. There is very little not to love about these dogs, from their looks to their amazing personalities. It is no wonder that they are considered the most popular dog in America and most other parts of the world. I am particularly fond of the rarer aesthetic variations of the Lab breed. The Dudley Labrador is one of these, and in the sections below, you will see why it is such an awesome dog to have. Dudley Labradors are Labrador Retrievers best known for their pink noses. In addition to this distinguishing feature, the dog may have other sections of hypopigmentation, including in the eyes and paw pads. They are usually Yellow Labradors with a specific gene variation that causes reduced pigmentation in these sections. Despite their unique and beautiful looks, Dudley Labradors do not always figuratively fly off the shelves. Here is more on why this is the case and everything else you need to know if you are considering one. What Causes A Dudley Lab? This variation of the Labrador breed is relatively rare and, unfortunately, plagued by controversy despite its beautiful and mystical aesthetic. They are also thought of as less healthy than other Lab variations. While the pink nose does pose health challenges, Dudley Labs are pretty much like any other Labrador Retriever in every way. Its physical features, in particular, are relatively similar to the standard breed. Here are the most important of these for some perspective. The specific shade of yellow varies based on genetics from pale, cream shades to darker, red varieties. The fur is short, straight, and densely packed for a beautiful coat. Size And Build Dudley Labradors are medium to large dogs weighing between 55 and 80 lbs and measuring 21 to 24 inches in height. They are proportionally built with very muscular limbs and wide chests. Eyes The eyes of a Dudley Labrador are oval and wide set on the face. The eye color varies depending on genetics. In most cases, the hypopigmentation responsible for the pink nose also affects the eyes resulting in light colors like blue. The Dudley Lab may also have yellow, hazel, or brown eyes. The ears are also the same distinctly large and floppy type seen with all other Labradors. Image from Instagram: shelby. Some can live for up to 14 years or even more if they are healthy and well taken care of. The Dudley Labrador Retriever variation suffers from more or less the same conditions that other Labradors do. Furthermore, their hypopigmented parts are exposed to additional and unique health issues. For some perspective of what you can expect with your dog, here are some of the most common health issues that face the Dudley Lab. Sunburn This may come as a surprise to many but dogs actually suffer from skin issues like sunburn. This is more common with hypopigmented variations like the Dudley Labrador. The noses of these Lab variations may be seriously sunburnt, especially with prolonged exposure to the sun. Sunburns and continued sun exposure put the Dudley Labrador at a higher risk of developing skin cancer lesions later on in life. Dog Nose Hyperkeratosis Dudley Labradors are also at risk of developing dog nose hyperkeratosis. Progressive Retinal Atrophy Progressive Retinal Atrophy is characterized by slow and irreversible loss of vision on both eyes. Unfortunately, this condition has no cure. However, early discovery allows you to best prepare your Dudley Labrador for their new life through special training. If management through medication, exercise, and diet modification, is not started promptly, hip dysplasia can easily progress to arthritis. This applies both to Dudley Labradors and regular Labs as well as other dog breeds. For some perspective on what a pink nose could indicate, here are some of the problems associated with the trait in dogs. Bacterial Infections Some infections on the nose and in the blood could cause a lightening on the color from black or brown to shades like pink or even white in serious infections. More often than not, these are associated with hyperkeratinization, which results in the formation of crusts. Contact Dermatitis These are allergic reactions triggered by contact with materials that the dog may be allergic to. One of the most commonly implicated triggers when it comes to turning the nose pink is plastic. This can be found everywhere, from food bowls to toys. It may also happen with rubber. With conditions like Albinism, the pink nose will be present from birth onwards. With vitiligo, a Dudley lab may have a dark nose that slowly turns pink. Autoimmune Disorders Some of the most commonly implicated autoimmune conditions when it comes to pink noses in dogs include lupus and pemphigus. These are usually associated with other skin issues, including alopecia as well as general, systemic symptoms. Skin Cancer Another insidious cause of pink nose in dogs is skin cancer. More often than not, the pink nose spots progress to growths or ulcer lesions. It is therefore best to get any new pink spots checked out by a vet just to be safe. This makes them awesome for use as companions, service dogs, and even hunting dogs. Here are some of these awesome personality traits that you have to look forward to. Smart And Eager To Learn One of the best things about having and living with a Dudley Labrador is the fact that they are very easy to train. They are intelligent, obedient, and very eager to learn. All you have to do is be consistent with your training and figure out a reward system that works for your pooch and you should be good to go. Lively Dudley Labradors are very lively dogs. They are vocal and love to stay active and are therefore ideal if you have young children in the home as they match that same energy. If you want your Dudley Lab just a little more calm, start discipline and obedience training from an early age and invest in playtime to work out all that extra energy. Friendly Dudley Labradors are great if you want a social dog. Like most other dog breeds, they may require some early socialization in order to get comfortable, especially with small pets that they may instinctively want to hunt. With this early exposure, your Dudley Lab will very easily get along with other pets, including small ones like cats. Gentle And Even-Tempered Another reason you may want to consider a Dudley Labrador for a family setting is due to their gentle nature. They can be very protective, especially over young children, and make for the perfect furry siblings. Do Dudley Labs Shed? In the sections below, we shall take a closer look at all the important care tips you need to know, from how to deal with shedding to how to take care of their special needs. Removes loose hair: reaches through the topcoat to remove loose undercoat hair without cutting skin or damaging the.FURejector button: just push the button to release hair with ease. Its automated systems and special pet dander vacuuming feature definitely make it stand out among all the other options. A regular shower with high-quality shampoo does a lot to help deal with this. Naturally Medicated Formula - Made with all natural ingredients plus pH balanced, alcohol free, paraben free Best for.Investing in a good nose balm for your dog helps you to keep their noses smooth and protected. Paw balms also go a long way towards preventing issues like cracks and infections. Most puppies are born with pink noses, which turn black or dark brown as they grow older. However, this is not always the case, especially with dogs like Dudley Labradors and other breeds and variations with hypopigmentation genes. In these cases, the noses only turn to a slightly darker shade of pink and never black. Metal bowls do not turn dog noses pink. To avoid this and other reactions associated with the materials, stick to stainless steel or ceramic food and water dog bowls. These, more often than not, form crusts or flakes that may be black, brown, or white. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. If you are a Labrador owner or thinking of introducing a Labrador into your family, you may have heard of a Dudley Labrador. There is quite a lot of mystique around these special pups, which means they can sometimes struggle to find a home or your breeder might ask for a premium for the pup. Read on to discover everything you need to know about these handsome dogs. They are just as good a choice for a family dog as any other type of Labrador. What Is A Dudley Labrador? A Dudley Labrador is a Yellow Labrador that is born without any pigment in their nose, eye rims, and feet, so they appear pink. They will have pale-colored eyes as well, usually blue or teal. There are three recognized colors of Labradors, black, chocolate, and yellow. Each of these dogs has two genetic loci that affect their pigmentation. The first of these loci is called the B loci, and can be BB, Bb, or bb. Any Labrador that inherits a BB or Bb will be black. Dogs that inherit a bb can be chocolate or yellow. Whether they are chocolate or yellow depends on the Ee loci, which can be EE, Ee, or ee. Of these dogs with the bb loci, those that inherit EE or Ee will be chocolate, and those that inherit ee will be yellow. But, those few pups that inherit both bb and ee loci will not only be yellow, but they will also be a Dudley Labrador. So, Dudley Labradors are a natural genetic occurrence, but they are relatively rare. There are also other Labradors that have reduced pigmentation, such as Black Labradors with a chocolate nose. This type of reduced pigmentation is just natural variation within the normal color range of Labradors. Pink Nose Lab All Labradors are born with pink noses. For the majority of Labs, their noses will turn black or brown during the first few weeks of their lives. However, because Dudley Labradors have less melanin, their noses, the rims around their eyes, and their feet stay pink for their entire lives. Dudley Labradors are not albinos, because this lack of pigmentation does not affect every part of their bodies. But Dudley Labradors are not the only pink nose Labs. As Labradors age, the pigmentation in their nose reduces. This pigmentation is produced by an enzyme called tyrosinase, which makes melanin. As this enzyme becomes less effective, their nose can turn pink as they enter their advanced years. This is completely normal and is not anything to be concerned about. This is more likely to happen in colder temperatures, as the enzyme works better in hotter climates. But if a younger Lab, which is not a Dudley, develops a pink nose when they are younger, this can be a sign of a medical problem such as a bacterial infection, allergy, or skin condition. In this case, it is an indication that you should talk to your Vet. Beyond their distinctive nose, Dudley Labradors are no different from any other Labradors. They have the same temperament and intelligence. They also have the same life expectancy and are predisposed to the same medical conditions as other Labradors, but they are not prone to any additional medical issues as a result of their distinctive noses. There has been some recent research into whether the color of Labradors influences their trainability or other behavior; responding to the anecdotal evidence, Chocolate Labradors tend to be more hyperactive, aggressive, and difficult to train. The study found there was no difference in the trainability or intelligence of Labradors based on their color. There is some evidence to suggest that Yellow Labradors, like Dudleys, might be slightly more aggressive towards other dogs than Black and Chocolate Labradors, but the difference seems to be negligible. There have been no specific studies carried out to see if Dudleys are different from other Yellow Labradors in terms of their intelligence and behavior. The one area where Dudley Labradors are different from other Labradors is they are not eligible to be show dogs or breeding dogs. Their pink noses are marked as a fault in the ring, which excludes them from competition. They are also not recognized within the Breed Standard by the Kennel Club. This means that the dog can also not be registered for breeding. From the AKC website: The nose should be black on black or yellow dogs, and brown on chocolates. Nose color fading to a lighter shade is not a fault. A thoroughly pink nose or one lacking in any pigment is a disqualification. So, while Dudley Labradors make an excellent pet for the home, they are excluded from competition and breeding. Dudley Labradors can be bought from all the same places as other types of Labradors, but they are pretty difficult to get hold of. Secondly, knowing the restrictions on Dudley Labradors when it comes to competition and breeding, many breeders will specifically control to exclude Dudley Labradors. If you are desperate to have a Dudley Labrador, you could ask a breeder to attempt to breed one for you. But you should expect to pay a significant premium for this service. You are more likely to find a Dudley Labrador among the litter of a non-professional breeder whose Labrador has become pregnant. If they are selling the pups, they might also want to charge a bit extra for the Dudley, as it is likely to be unique among the litter. So, long story short, actively hunting down a Dudley Labrador can be a challenging process. If your Labrador happens to produce a Dudley in their litter, or you come across a Dudley that needs adopting, they make excellent household pets. Yes, Dudley Labradors are relatively rare as you need a very specific genetic combination to produce a Dudley. Also, many breeders control for this gene and exclude it when creating new pups, as Dudley Labradors are excluded from showing and are also excluded from the breed registry. Dudley Labradors have the same life expectancy as all purebred Labradors , so around twelve years. The genetic quirk that gives Dudley Labradors their pink nose does not have a detrimental impact on their health. Are Dudley Labradors Albino? Like albinos, the pink nose in Dudley Labradors is caused by a lack of melanin, but they are not albino, as this does not affect the other parts of their body, and their skin and hair still contain pigment. Dudley Labradors suffer from all the same health issues as all purebred Labradors, but they are not susceptible to additional health issues as a result of their pink nose. Their nose may be more prone to sunburn than those of other Labradors. For this reason, extra precautions should be taken to avoid developing skin cancer in that area. Dudley Labradors will have light-colored eyes to match their noses, usually blue or teal. Their eyes will never be described as green, as this is not a color recognized for Labradors by the Kennel Club. The only purebred dog recognized as having green eyes is the American Pit Bull Terrier. As Dudley Labradors are considered among Yellow Labradors, Chocolate Labradors are actually the rarest color Labradors, though they do occur almost as frequently as Yellow Labradors. Black Labradors are roughly twice as common as the other two colored Labradors. Anecdotal evidence suggests that Chocolate Labradors are more hyperactive, aggressive, and harder to train than other types of Labradors. But recent research suggests this is not the case and that it is not possible to determine the trainability or character of a Labrador based on color. There is some evidence to suggest that Yellow Labradors might be more aggressive towards other dogs than Brown or Black Labradors, but the variation is too low to be considered highly significant. In fact, one of our puppies that we trained for nearly 2 years was a Dudley. After 2 years of training Dublin became a service dog and worked for another 6 years. In my experience there has not been any noticeable difference in the behavior of a Dudley Labrador vs other Lab colors. Final Thoughts Dudley Labradors are gorgeous Labs that lack pigmentation in their nose, the rims around the eyes, and paws. As a result, they have a pink nose, rather than the black or brown nose that characterizes most Labradors. This is an entirely natural, though slightly more rare genetic occurrence among Labradors. But, for some reason, these special Labradors have been excluded from the competition circuit, and they are also not recognized by the Kennel Club for breeding. But, despite this, these pups, if you come across one, make an excellent family dog. They are just as loving, intelligent, and playful as other Labradors. If you have any experience with Dudley Labradors, please share it with the community using our comments section. Helps ease anxiety in their new home. We love using Bully Sticks to help divert these unwanted behaviors. For a list of all the supplies we get for our new service dog puppies check out our New Puppy Checklist on the PuppyInTraining. This trait is recessive, meaning that both parents must carry the gene for it to be expressed in their offspring. While some people may mistake a Dudley Labrador for an albino dog, this is not the case. Albino dogs have a complete lack of pigment throughout their entire body, including their eyes. Dudley Labradors, on the other hand, have normal pigmentation in the rest of their body, but lack it in specific areas. Another way of explaining this is that their natural pigmentation is diluted, but still present. They are just as healthy and friendly as any other Labrador Retriever. However, some breeders may charge more for Dudley Labradors due to their unique appearance. But remember that by rights, breeders should not ask more Dudleys. This is because the color is a fault and even they are disqualified from showing. If breeders ask more for a Dudley, it is part of the trend to ask higher prices for dogs with rare colors, like lemon Beagles , or Lilac French Bulldogs. In conclusion, Dudley Labradors are a fascinating variation of the beloved Labrador Retriever breed. While their pink noses and lighter coat color may set them apart from other Labradors, they are just as lovable and loyal as any other dog. They are known for their pinkish nose and light-colored eyes, which set them apart from other Labradors. The Dudley variation is caused by a recessive gene that affects the production of pigment in the nose and eyes. This gene is present in Labradors, but it is usually masked by other dominant genes that produce a black or brown nose and dark eyes. Dudley Labradors are therefore relatively rare, and their distinctive appearance has made them popular among dog enthusiasts. The history of Dudley Labradors is not well-documented, but it is believed that the first Dudley Labrador was born in the early 20th century. The breed gained popularity in the United States in the s and s, and since then, breeders have worked to preserve and promote the breed. Today, Dudley Labradors are recognized by some kennel clubs, but they are not officially recognized as a separate breed, but it is not a color most Kennel clubs allow for showing. They are still considered to be Labrador Retrievers, but with a unique variation in appearance. Breeders continue to work to produce healthy and well-tempered Dudley Labradors, and the breed remains a popular choice for dog lovers who appreciate their distinctive look. This is due to the lack of melanin, a pigment that gives color to the skin and hair, in the nose and eye areas. While the Dudley gene is rare, the term only applies to yellow Labradors. Some chocolate or black labs may also have a brown or pinkish nose and some people also call these dogs Dudleys, but they are not really. In the picture below you can see a chocolate lab that may be mistaken for a Dudley because of its lighter nose. Remember, breeding two Dudley Labradors together can result in health issues, such as skin cancer, due to the lack of protection from melanin or color dilution alopecia. When it comes to the genetics of Labrador retrievers , the color of their coat is determined by two specific locations on their genes, called loci. There are two important ones to know about: the B loci and the Ee loci. BB or Bb: If the Labrador inherits these combinations, it will be black. EE or Ee: If the Labrador inherits these combinations, and it has bb from the B loci, it will be chocolate. Now, the Dudley Labrador is a special case where the Labrador inherits both bb from the B loci and ee from the Ee loci. This unique combination not only makes the Labrador yellow but also gives it specific characteristics that make it a Dudley Labrador such as a flesh-colored nose instead of a black one. Are all Labradors with Pink Noses Dudleys? The pink nose in a Labrador is often confused with the flesh-colored nose of a Dudley, but they are actually different. Dudley Labrador: As explained earlier, a Dudley Labrador has a flesh-colored nose, lips, eye rims, and feet. This is a genetic trait that comes from inheriting both the bb combination from the B loci and the ee combination from the Ee loci. These specific genetic factors result in a lack of pigmentation in these areas. Age: As some Labradors get older, their noses might lose pigmentation, leading to a lighter or pinkish color. Injury or Illness: An injury to the nose or certain health conditions can also lead to a loss of pigmentation, resulting in a pink appearance. Dudley Labradors are medium to large-sized dogs with a muscular build. They typically weigh between pounds and stand inches tall at the shoulder. Male Dudley Labradors are usually larger than females. Dudley Labradors have a distinct appearance that sets them apart from other Labradors. They have a pink or flesh-colored nose, lips, and eye rims, which are caused by a lack of pigmentation. Their eyes are usually hazel or green, and their coat color can vary from yellow to chocolate. The lack of pigmentation in their nose and lips can cause them to be more prone to sunburn and skin cancer. Coat Type Dudley Labradors have a short, dense, and water-resistant double coat that is easy to maintain. They shed moderately throughout the year but may have heavy seasonal shedding. They require regular brushing to keep their coat healthy and shiny. Bathing should only be done when necessary to avoid drying out their skin. They are eager to please their owners and are very loyal. These dogs are also very intelligent, ranking as the seventh most intelligent dog breed in the world, according to Dr. Studies show that many labs have a variation on the POMC gene which is linked to weight gain and hunger, leading to obesity in some cases. However, this also makes them highly trainable as they have a strong food drive. Studies have shown that Labrador Retrievers have a special affinity for water. In fact, they are often more attracted to water than to social stimuli. A pilot study published in ScienceDirect found that these dogs are more attracted to water than to social stimuli. Chocolate labs were more agitated when ignored and showed more excitability than black labs, and lower trainability and noise fear than both yellow and black labs. Dogs exercised for longer periods showed less aggression, less fear of humans and objects, and lower separation anxiety than dogs that were not as active. In other words, as dilute yellow labs, Dudleys can be some of the most trainable and easy companion dogs, but they may still need a lot of exercise if they come from working dog or gun dog bloodlines. Health and Lifespan Dudley Labradors are generally healthy dogs with an average lifespan of 10 to 12 years. However, like all breeds, they are prone to certain health issues that potential owners should be aware of. One of the most common health concerns in Dudley Labradors is hip and elbow dysplasia, which can cause pain and mobility issues. Obesity is also a concern, as excess weight can exacerbate joint problems and increase the risk of other health issues such as heart problems. Atopic dermatitis, a skin condition that causes itching and inflammation, is another common issue in Dudley Labradors. This can be managed through proper grooming and diet, as well as medication if necessary. Other health issues that can affect Dudley Labradors include various types of cancers, limber tail, myopathy, and CCL Disease. Liver issues like shunts and nasal parakeratosis are also possible. To ensure the best possible health for a Dudley Labrador, it is important to provide them with regular exercise, a healthy diet, and routine veterinary care. Regular check-ups with a veterinarian can help catch and manage any potential health issues early on. Caring for a Dudley Labrador When caring for a Dudley Labrador, it is important to remember that they require the same level of care as any other Labrador Retriever. However, there are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to their unique physical characteristics. One thing to note is that Dudley Labradors have a pink nose and light-colored eyes, which makes them more susceptible to sunburn. It is important to apply sunscreen to their nose and provide them with plenty of shade on hot, sunny days. Another thing to keep in mind is their coat. Dudley Labradors have a yellow or cream-colored coat, which can be prone to matting and tangling. Regular grooming, including brushing and bathing, is necessary to keep their coat healthy and shiny. When it comes to exercise, Dudley Labradors are active dogs and require daily exercise to stay healthy and happy. This can include walks, runs, or playing fetch. However, it is important to avoid overexertion, especially in hot weather. In terms of diet, Dudley Labradors require a balanced diet that is appropriate for their age and activity level. It is important to provide them with high-quality dog food and avoid overfeeding, as they can be prone to obesity. Yes, they are considered rare dogs because they require a specific type of genetic combination to be created. Breeders often prevent this type of Labrador from being created because Dudley Labs are not recognized by most kennel clubs, like the United Kennel Club or the American Kennel Club. They are also excluded from being registered as part of the breed because they are rarely produced. Yes, Dudley Labs make fantastic family dogs, just like any Labrador Retriever. Even though they can be highly active, Labs are a favorite among those looking for all-round dogs. A Dudley Lab is a friendly, outgoing, and active dog. Once properly trained, they would fit inside any home, even one with other pets and young children. They are more than happy to greet new people but will also be protective of their families when the need calls for it. One thing to keep in mind though is that these dogs are active and energetic. They require daily exercise or some form of physical activity to keep them busy; otherwise, they will turn destructive. They have been known to chew on furniture, carpets, and other things in the home when they have a lot of pent-up energy. You can stop them from doing this by giving them a toy they can carry around or chew on their mouth to keep them busy. This lifespan is about the same as any regular Labrador Retriever. As for health issues, a Dudley will suffer the same health problems common among chocolate, black, or yellow Labrador varieties. These include: Hip Dysplasia This is a heritable condition. For the latter, an X-ray will be required for the animal to be diagnosed. This results in a lot of pain for the animal and could lead to stiffening of the joints. The dog will be unable to move or bend the affected joint. This condition usually shows up on dogs as young as four months old. Epilepsy The Dudley Labrador can suffer from epilepsy, causing a mild seizure in the animal. Although it can be horrifying to watch a dog suffer seizures, the prognosis is usually very good. Acute Moist Dermatitis This causes the skin of the animal to become red and inflamed due to a bacterial infection. This skin problem is easy to treat with antibiotics, medicated baths as well as clipping and clearing out the hair in the affected area. Sunburn The only special thing owners need to keep in mind with a Dudley Lab is that they can be prone to sunburn because of the lack of pigmentation on their noses. Never use human sunscreen as it may be toxic to dogs. You can find specialty sunscreen for animals at your vet or pet shops. They are similar to any regular Labrador. Give them enough attention, healthy food, plenty of exercise as well as tons of love, and they will offer you the same devotion and affection in return. Prices for a Dudley Labrador can vary depending on the breeder. When it comes to money spent on a new Dudley Labrador puppy, expect to spend a lot more during the first year than in succeeding years. New dogs will require a lot. This includes new items, vaccinations and more. Again, this amount will vary because the prices and circumstances will be different. Sometimes you could be getting your Dudley for a specific purpose instead of as a regular family pet, and this will mean specialized training or other necessities you would need to spend on. However, you can occasionally find them among Labrador breeders or even in the rescue or adoption system. Here are several breeders you can check out: The Labrador Club — The Labrador Retriever Club is an organization and community dedicated to the Labrador breed. They have a breeder directory sorted by state to make it easier for you to get in touch with possible breeders when looking for a Dudley Lab. Ashland Labradors — A breeder based in Nashville, Tennessee that specializes in breeding Labradors of correct and low-key temperaments and ones that would make fantastic family companions. They are based in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Led by founder Donna Stanley, they specialize in the Labrador Retriever and ensure they are house-trained and with low-key temperaments. Marble Mount Kennels — Based in Greenview, California, this breeder has been in operation for 25 years. They focus on six traits when breeding their Lab puppies: great personality, beautiful looks, high hunting desire, proven pedigree, highly intelligent, and natural pointing instinct. If you prefer to rescue or adopt a Dudley, they do show up in the system. Lab Rescue — A non-profit organization that helps rescue, foster, and find forever homes for abandoned, abused, neglected, or surrendered Labs, particularly in the areas of Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, and North Carolina. American Lab Rescue — An all-volunteer non-profit, they not only focus on purebred Labrador Retrievers but also Labrador mixes. They focus on helping homeless dogs, whether puppies or adult dogs. Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida — Started in , this non-profit rescue focuses on rescuing Labradors and placing them in the right homes. Southern Skies Rescue — Not only does this rescue center focus on Labradors but also on other working dog breeds. They rescue these animals from high kill shelters and also taken in owner surrenders and strays. They are based primarily in Huntsville, Alabama. Based in Southern California, they can accommodate adoptions in this area only. The rescue focuses on abandoned or unwanted dogs and features an all-volunteer staff. Finally, always check with quality local breeders or animal shelters in your area to see if they have any Dudley Labradors available. Should You Get a Dudley Lab? A Dudley Labrador is a loving and gentle dog. They have an amazing temperament and will make fantastic pets. Not really. The only similarity the Dudley Labrador has with an albino is the lack of pigmentation around the nose, paws and eye rim areas. This lack of melanin does not affect the skin, fur, or other parts of the body. These areas will still contain pigmentation, so they cannot be classified as albinos. Can a Dudley Lab Compete in Shows? What Is the Rarest Labrador Color? Even if you see them fairly often, the chocolate Labrador is actually the rarest color type among Labradors. Their pink noses make them stand out at first glance, but they carry the same friendly, outgoing, and energetic personality as any other Labrador Retriever. Finally, a Dudley Lab serves as a fantastic family pet thanks to their intelligent and playful personality. These dogs care for their humans and will be a loyal companion to you and your family if you welcome them into your home. My passion for animals started at a very young age as I grow up on a farm with several horses, cows, cats, chickens, and dogs on our property. Glad I did. But we will discuss some health concerns and breeding differences worth mentioning below. In general, owners can expect similar behavior and growth from a Dudley lab. There are no major health issues or concerns because of this pigmentation difference. But this unique lab certainly causes many questions, so learning more about the breed can be helpful. Below we list 10 key facts to know about the Dudley. They were bred to have a pink nose, which is known to happen because of a lack of melanin. All Labradors are born with a lack of melanin, but within a few weeks, they reach the proper levels for the nose to darken. Labradors are born with a pigment known as Tyrosinase. This enzyme produces melanin, but Dudley labs lack enough Tyrosinase for their noses ever to change colors. One way is to breed two chocolate labs with a yellow lab gene pool combination. The other is by cross-breeding a yellow Labrador Retriever and a chocolate Labrador Retriever. This method is less common and is often considered irresponsible by professional Labrador breeders. The genes required to breed this type of lab are extremely specific, and DNA tests are required before any actual breeding is done. There Is Only One Dudley Labrador Gene Combination Labrador breeding uses genes from both parents, which will determine the litter's coat color and genotype. This is because many people also refer to the Dudley as a yellow lab with a brown nose. But this is incorrect, and the true Dudley lab has a pink nose. Both of these results are uncommon, and beyond just the gene combination is the pigmentation presence. They also always have a lighter eye color with pink around them. The most common eye color to see in a Dudley lab is light blue or teal. This pale eye color is a notable trait to expect from nearly all yellow labs with pink noses. The lack of melanin and pigmentation directly causes this light eye color. And because of this, the non-profit determines the fate of many dog breeds. For example, Dudley Labradors with a yellow coat and pink nose cannot be included in any competitions. This has been included in the revised standard since .It upsets many lab owners because this is a purebred dog, but the rarity of the look has caused an exclusion from the AKC. They have a pink nose, light-colored eyes, light-colored fur, and the pink area around their eyes and paws. Compared to any other Labrador with dark features, the Dudley gets sunburned more often, requiring more care in hotter conditions. The lack of pigmentation creates a more sensitive area for these dogs. Because of this reason, there are products like FDA-approved dog sunscreen. This is something worth considering for any Dudley lab owners. It causes harm and pain to the dog by creating an uncomfortable layer on its paws, nose, and ears. Dudley Labradors have an increased risk of developing this skin issue because of the lack of melanin in their bodies. If a dog develops this condition, immediate treatment is necessary. The skin is more prone to cracking and peeling, which is why hyperkeratosis occurs. A Dudley's pink nose and paws can be protected to avoid these skin conditions. This lab type does not fit the breed standard. We mentioned earlier that Dudley labs are not allowed to enter AKC competitions either. This is why they cannot be registered as official breeders. This scares away dog breeders from ever considering breeding a litter of Dudley lab puppies. This is the rule, even though not all Dudleys would produce more pink nose yellow labs. It depends on the genotype combination too. This means they have pink noses, paws, and light pink areas around their eyes. Within a few weeks, labs will outgrow this, and their eyes, paws, and noses will get darker depending on the genotype. But with a Dudley, nothing changes as they grow. Typically, labs are not adopted until weeks, but the pink nose would get darker within the first four weeks. It was thought that yellow labs with pink noses were actually albinos, but this is not the case. For example, there is a black pigment, liver pigment, and NBP no black pigment -lacking pigment. Because of the lack of pigment, the pink nose exists. But they should not be considered albinos; even labs with dark noses will see them fade in cold weather. How Are Dudley Labradors Bred? Every Labrador Retriever is born with a pink nose, but the nose gets darker as they age. For yellow labs, this color typically changes to black. But with a Dudley Labrador, the nose stays pink because of the pigmentation and lack of melanin. However, this is an uncommon breed and genetic combination. Labrador lovers say that happiness starts with a wet nose, and a wet nose comes in various colors. Then what about a pink nose? Where did the pink nose Labrador come from? Is a Labrador with pink nose called a Dudley Lab? This article explains everything about the special Dudley Labrador retriever. Have a look. Dudley Lab- What is a Dudley Lab actually? Usually, yellow Labs, black Labs have black noses and chocolate Labradors have brown noses. This is pretty common. But some yellow Labradors have noses without any pigmentation. Not only noses you can find other areas such as eye rims without pigmentation. Have you seen them? So Dudley Labrador is a normal Labrador which does not have any pigmentation on the nose, eyes, eye rims and even feet. They look pink since the day of birth throughout the entire life. This is a unique genetic trait and this cannot be considered as an abnormality. Labrador Pigmentation genetics Why do Dudley Labrador puppies have pink noses? It is all connected to its genetics. When you look at a newborn Labrador puppy, you can see its pink bright nose. Usually, this colour becomes darker within one or two weeks. Some noses start turning black, some into brown and some remain pink in colour. This melanin density in the nose is dependent upon the genes the puppy has inherited from its parents. A Dudley Labrador is a result of genes that the puppy has acquired from its parents. This Dudley Lab retains its pink color nose even though it grows older and older. This is purely related to genetics. Are Dudley Labs rare? Yes, Dudley Labs are a rare genetic variation and only a few percentages of yellow Labradors tend to carry this genetic trait. Even though Dudley Labradors are rare, they cannot be treated as genetically defective. They are just another version of colour variation. But some people argue that Dudley Labs are very common. This is because they confuse their Lab for a Dudley Labrador because of the colour depigmentation that occurs generally with age and seasons. Many Labradors lose their pigmentation on the nose usually as the dog grows by age. This is very common. The depigmentation increases during the winter as this tyrosine is more effective in warmer weather. Hence this condition is known as Winter Nose or Snow Nose. Do not confuse the Labrador with a pink nose with a Dudley Labrador. Not every pink nose Labrador is a Dudley dog. As normal Labradors with snow nose retain their black colour around eye rims even though they lose their nose colour. But this is not the case with Dudley Labs as they do not have pigmentation on the eye rims too. Dudley Lab characteristics A Dudley Lab has the same characteristics as that of a normal dark nose Labrador. Either black nose or brown nose or a Dudley nose, every Labrador can be a loving and wonderful family pet. The only difference is the physical characteristics related to the colour of its nose, eye rims and feet. Dudley Labs have no pigmentation in some areas where yellow Labs have black colour. Dudley Labrador health issues A Dudley Labrador will have the same health issues as a normal Labrador, such as hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, bloat, cancer etc. This would not be a problem if you live in areas where the climate is mild and pleasant. It could be a problem if you live in areas of hotter climates. In such cases, you should be careful in keeping your Dudley Labrador out of the sun. If your dog prefers to enjoy the long sunny days, remember to apply sunscreen to its nose to avoid severe sunburns. Remember that you should not use a sunscreen intended for human use as it may contain ingredients toxic for your dog. There are many safe non-toxic sunscreens available in the market for your dog. After my research, i found out some best ones. You can either use this or this. Or else you can also consult your Vet to choose the sunscreen protection to protect its nose. Or if your dog does not like the sunscreens, you should at least buy a doggy sun hat like this to protect him Are Dudley Labs bad? A dark nosed puppy or a pink-nosed one. Both are no different. A Dudley Lab puppy is as friendly and as active as a dark nosed puppy. Some people think twice before buying a Dudley Labrador puppy due to certain factors which are untrue regarding Dudley Labrador temperament and its behaviour. As i told you a Dudley is the same as a dark nosed one. Dudley Lab price- Are Dudley Labs more expensive? Many dog breeders try to gain an advantage by quoting higher prices for the puppies which are different from the litter. Actually, a genuine breeder will not quote higher prices for a different coloration. Many breeders try to sell Dudley Lab puppies for a higher price claiming the pigmentation difference as a unique and different quality. I have seen people who bought Dudley puppies for inflated prices who believed that lack of pigmentation as different quality. But some breeders sell Dudley Lab puppies at lower prices as they consider it as an unwanted genetical trait. It all depends upon the nature of the breeder. Before bringing home a Dudley Lab it is better to know two facts regarding Dudley Labs. Their noses are at higher risk of sunburn in hotter climates. You should take essential care to prevent such sunburns. This is important to remember. If you want your Labrador to be a champ in shows, it is better to avoid Dudley Labs. The Show ring penalizes Labradors with pale noses, pale eye rims and feet. So, unless you want your Labrador to participate in shows there is no reason for rejecting a Dudley Labrador. If you are looking for a beloved family pet, a Dudley Labrador can be a wonderful pet and a lovable family member like any other Labrador retriever. Attention: Take the utmost care of your Dudley Lab by training him well. Breeding Labrador puppies with reduced pigment. Labrador Pigmentation Genetics All puppies are born with bright pink noses, which usually become darker in color over the first few weeks of their lives. A few yellow Labradors noses will remain the same pink color, some other noses will darken but only to a light brown shade, others will become completely black. The melanin in the nose cells will depend upon the genes that your puppy has inherited from his parents. Yellow Labrador noses come in a variety of shades, from pink, to brown, to black. Yellow Labradors will have one of three possible gene combinations in order to be yellow. Resulting in a darker color being shown on the skin. A Labrador with eebb will have a brown or paler nose. The tone of this nose will depend upon the shading of colors in their parents genetic backgrounds. It is possible to have adult dogs DNA tested, to find out whether they carry the right genes to produce Dudley puppies. Some show Labrador breeders will have this test carried out as a lack of pigmentation in yellow Labs is marked as a fault in the show ring. Beautiful Jack, the pale nosed Dudley Lab. Photo kindly provided by his loving owner, Rachel York. But many Labrador noses turn pink when they advance in years. This process is known as depigmentation and is quite common and not usually a cause for concern. When the yellow Lab is younger he will have a black nose and dark rims around his eyes. But as he ages and his coat begins to turn a little white in places, he may also lose pigment in his nose. Tyrosinase becomes less effective as your dog grows old. However, you may find that the fading of his nose is less noticeable in the warmer weather as the pigment producing enzyme works better in the heat. If your Lab cuts her nose, the resulting scar might be pink and not black or brown. Dudley Labradors are no different to their dark nosed Labrador friends. However, if you are going to buy a Dudley Lab puppy then you will need to be aware of a couple of things. Low pigmentation is linked to sunburn due to increased UV sensitivity. This is not a big deal if you live in a mild climate, and you can discuss with your veterinarian how to help your dog to reduce the chances of burning on those occasionally hot summer days. The show ring also penalises yellow Labradors for their pale noses, eye rims and feet. However, if you are looking for a loving family pet or working dog then a Dudley Labrador can make just as much of a wonderful companion and hard working friend as any other Labrador Retriever. Whether Labs are black, chocolate, or yellow, they are easy to identify with their happy, smiling faces, thick otter tails, and cheerful, friendly personalities. One feature that is often overlooked though is the color of their noses. While some yellow Labs, known as Dudleys, have a pink nose due to a lack of pigmentation, others may experience their once dark noses becoming pink due to several factors including weather, age, injury, allergies, or certain health conditions. Anytime we notice something abnormal in our dogs, we worry. Most people understand that a black Lab will have a black nose, a chocolate Lab will have a brown nose, and yellow Labs will have a black or brown nose, well, most of the time. Sometimes yellow Labs are Dudleys. Simply explained, a Dudley Lab is born lacking pigment in their nose, eye rims, lips, and feet, and these areas will remain pink throughout their lives. Some breeders refer to them as Yellow NBP no black pigment. Although black and chocolate Labs can have lighter than normal pigmentation or have expressed dilute genes, as is the case with the silver Labs, only yellow Labs can be true Dudleys. Although a Dudley would be disqualified in the show ring, Dudley Labs are not inferior in any way; it is just another genetic possibility in yellow Labs. Fun Fact: Dudley noses are not unique to Labs and were first discovered in Bulldogs from the English town of Dudley, hence the name. Depigmentation The loss or lightening of nose pigmentation color can be caused by a number of reasons, many of which are merely cosmetic and cause your dog no discomfort whatsoever. A few causes though may be of a more serious nature and require veterinary treatment. Weather A phenomenon called snow nose or winter nose is often noted as the days become shorter and temperatures start to drop in the early winter months. What Is Snow Nose? It all has to do with a temperature-dependent enzyme called tyrosinase. Tyrosinase helps to regulate the production of melanin, the substance responsible for pigmentation in the skin, hair, and eyes. As cold weather and shorter daylight hours settle in, some dogs will produce less tyrosinase which in turn causes lower levels of melanin to be produced, often resulting in the nose leather fading to a light brown or pink color. As spring draws near once again, more tyrosinase is produced to boost the melanin levels and protect the skin from sunburn and the damaging effects of ultraviolet rays. For many Labs experiencing snow nose, the nose will gradually return to its normal color as spring progresses. However, for some dogs, the lighter colored nose will remain permanently. In some affected dogs, the entire nose will become pink with just the outer edges remaining dark, and in other dogs, only the middle portion of the nose will lose pigment. The good news is that the color change is only a cosmetic issue, and the texture and moisture of the nose remains unchanged. The affected dog feels no discomfort whatsoever, and there is no cause for concern. Do All Labs Experience It? Some Labs will experience snow nose every winter. However, snow nose is much more commonly seen in yellow Labs, and is indeed more noticeable, though black and chocolate Labs may experience a slight loss of pigmentation in the colder months as well. Aging Normal aging is another cause of nose depigmentation that is related to tyrosinase. As dogs age, production of tyrosinase slows, resulting in lower melanin levels and thus, lighter-colored noses and an increased number of gray hairs. Injury Damage to the sensitive nose leather may result in a temporary change in color. Cuts or scrapes on the nose may cause the nose to appear pink in color as the damaged area heals and new skin grows in. This color change is usually only temporary, and upon complete healing, the nose should soon return to its normal color. Infection Bacterial and fungal infections, like ringworm, on the nose can cause inflammation, crusty or oozing scabs, itchiness, pain, and, occasionally, discoloration of the skin. Veterinary intervention is typically needed, but treatment is usually straightforward and nose color returns to normal when the infection has been resolved. Labrador Retrievers have an excellent sense of smell and use their nose to investigate everything they come in contact with. Even seemingly harmless objects such as plastic food and water bowls can cause a negative reaction in some dogs. Although many allergic responses involving the nose cause the area to become inflamed and darker in appearance, the irritation may cause some dogs to rub the area until it becomes raw and pink. This often leads to secondary infections, so be sure to have your veterinarian look at the nose before more serious issues develop. Autoimmune Disorders Labradors are not commonly affected by autoimmune disorders, but they can occur. Skin conditions such as mite infestation, allergic dermatitis, and seborrhea arise more frequently but are not likely to affect the coloration of the nose. Vitiligo A rather rare autoimmune skin disorder known as vitiligo involves the destruction of melanocytes which results in the loss of pigment on patches of the body, sometimes including the nose, causing it to become pink in appearance. While vitiligo is seen more often in Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, Belgian Tervurens, and Collies, it has appeared in Labradors on occasion. It can appear in humans, cats, and horses as well. This condition, however, nearly always involves more than just the nose. Other Conditions Nasal solar dermatitis, systemic or discoid lupus erythematosus, uveodermatological syndrome, and pemphigus foliaceus or erythematosus are other autoimmune disorders affecting the skin that may cause pigment loss of the nose. These conditions are, however, not very common in Labrador Retrievers. Yes, because of the lower amounts of protective melanin present, lighter-colored noses have a greater risk of sunburn. Using an all-natural sunscreen and moisturizing balm is highly recommended every time your Lab will be outdoors for an extended period. Before applying, check to be sure that the product contains no zinc, as zinc, when ingested in even small amounts, can be toxic to dogs. Related Posts:.

Pro Tip: Check out this ultimate pet parent guide with 39 dog care tips on pet first aid kits, puppy-proofing practices, training, veterinary appointments, and more! How much bigger will my Poodle get? There are a few ways to assess how much bigger your Poodle will get. The first is age. If your Poodle is less than a year old, they still have significant growth left! If your Poodle is between one and two years old, they are likely still filling out a bit, but are probably at their adult height. Do they still look oversized next to their legs and body? If this is the case, they are probably still filling out as this is a classic puppy feature! A Poodle puppy will rarely grow larger than their bigger parent, so this will also give you an idea of their maximum size. What is the size of a full-grown Poodle? According to the American Kennel Club Official Poodle Standards , an adult male Poodle is 60 to 70 pounds while an adult female Poodle weighs between 40 and 50 pounds. By these standards, full-grown Poodles will be over 15 inches tall when measuring from the ground to the highest point of their shoulders while standing. Most Standard Poodles will stand between 18 and 24 inches tall. Smart lifestyle choices are essential in keeping your Poodle happy and healthy. The Veterinary Centers of America recommend a long walk, jog, or intense play to fulfill their daily exercise needs. Poodles were bred as retrievers and, as such, are keen on games involving retrieving like fetch. Many Poodles also enjoy swimming. Due to their full coats, Poodles can put on excess weight without their pet parents realizing it. Poodles are not overly prone to weight issues with a balanced diet, but their coat can disguise weight changes. Their full coats also require regular upkeep like brushing and combing every other day, professional grooming every six weeks or so, and watching for potential eye problems. Poodles are prone to weeping eyes and eye irritation from lashes or hair, so keeping their eye area free of long hair is ideal. As a purebred dog breed, Poodles are more susceptible to genetic health problems. Many of these genetic health problems can be screened for early on using DNA technology. These early screenings can help you and your veterinarian prevent and minimize health complications from these genetic diseases. A bove all else, regular veterinary care is the best way to make sure your Poodle stays healthy. Between health screenings, regular veterinary care, bloodwork, x-rays , dental cleanings , and more, your veterinarian is your best resource in caring for your precious Poodle puppy. Be aware, vet visits can quickly become expensive - especially when immediate treatment or surgery is needed for an emergency or illness. With many treatments and surgeries costing thousands of dollars, this can quickly put pet parents in a pinch should the worst happen to their pet. Poodles are larger dogs, which can also increase the price of treatment. This is where pet insurance comes in. Pet insurance reimburses you for out-of-pocket veterinary costs and provides a safety net should the worst happen to your Poodle. Supplements can provide essential vitamins and minerals that are not found in traditional dog foods. Additionally, they can provide essential fatty acids that are needed for growth and development. Additionally, some supplements can assist in the digestion process and help reduce the risk of certain diseases. When choosing what type of supplement to feed a poodle puppy, research the product carefully and make sure it meets the nutritional needs of your particular breed of dog. When it comes to feeding a toy poodle puppy, it is important to recognize that they have different needs than an adult poodle. Toy poodles are small dogs and require smaller portions of food compared to larger breed dogs. The amount of food you should feed a toy poodle puppy depends on several factors, such as its age and activity level. Generally, puppies need to be fed three times daily with the appropriate amount of dry dog food that is formulated for their specific age group. It is also important to make sure your toy poodle puppy has access to fresh water at all times. As your puppy grows older, you may need to adjust the amount of food you feed them accordingly. Additionally, if your puppy becomes overweight or underweight, consult with your veterinarian for advice on how much and what type of food would be best for them. This puppy formula will provide not only the necessary vitamins and minerals needed for healthy growth and development, but also beneficial omega-3 fatty acids that can help keep their coat and skin in good condition. Toy poodles may also benefit from an age-appropriate diet or food designed specifically for their breed that accounts for their smaller size and higher metabolism. Their bones and joints will grow and strengthen, so proper nutrition is vital for their development. By the time your puppy is three months old, it will be around 13 to 19 inches 33 to .They will be learning to explore and become active. Your Standard Poodle will weigh about 30 pounds .They will start becoming far more active and should be between 19 and 23 inches .This period is all about exploring and mischief. Both male and female puppies will stand around 18 to 22 inches .This is the full adult height for some standard-sized Poodles, and you should not expect any more significant height growth. This will range from 23 and 37 inches .Their weight will be between 45 and 70 pounds .Genetics and Common Health Problems When trying to work out how big your puppy will be as an adult dog, one of the best ways of determining this would be to look at the parent dogs. When you purchase a Poodle puppy from a breeder, you will have a chance to meet the mom and the dad. If they are on the large or small side for the breed, likely, your dog will also follow in their footsteps. If your dog contracts any common health problems that haunt this breed, his growth could also be affected. Hip dysplasia is also a common ailment in large breeds and causes significant amounts of pain and can affect growth. Bloat is another terrifying ailment for this breed that is potentially life-threatening if not caught early. It occurs in big-chested breeds where gas gets trapped in the stomach, requiring surgical intervention. Epilepsy is a hereditary ailment in Poodles and is known as Idiopathic epilepsy. Many of the above diseases can be avoided through proper nutrition and regular vet checkups. Neutering or spaying dogs too early could cause them to grow unevenly. This is because bone and joint development are affected by reproductive hormones. While Miniature and Toy dogs can be neutered at around six months, you should wait until your Standard Poodle is around one year old before the procedure is performed. At the right age, neutering or spaying your dog can have many health benefits, including reducing cancer risks, preventing aggression, and preventing unwanted puppies. Feeding Habits A balanced nutritional meal plan will ensure that your pet grows at the optimal rate, developing strong bones and joints to carry their weight. To prevent your dog from growing too quickly and to provide him with all the supplements and nutrients he needs for healthy growth, it is recommended to feed your Standard Poodle, a large-breed puppy food for at least the first year of his life. Physical Activities While Standard Poodles need plenty of exercise, be careful not to over-train your growing puppy, as their joints and limbs have not fully developed, and irreparable damage can be caused. Dogs need to be brushed and groomed regularly. Included in this regime should be teeth brushing. We know Standard Poodle dogs develop problems with their teeth. You will also need to maintain a healthy diet with plenty of exercise. Healthy Diet Large breed dogs like Standard Poodles should eat high-quality dog food crafted explicitly for them. Foods for large dogs differ from other dog foods in that they generally have higher levels of protein, fat, calcium, Vitamin D, and Phosphorus. Also read: Best Dog Food for Poodles 2. Their joints and limbs are not fully developed, and any strain could lead to a lifetime of complications for your Poodle. Standard Poodles love water, so swimming is always an excellent way to exercise. A full coat can weigh your dog down, so if your Poodle loves to swim, you might consider giving him a shorter haircut like a kennel cut or summer clip. Manage Stress To keep your puppy stress-free, expose him to as many new situations, people, and dogs as possible during his early years to become well-socialized. It can take these dogs a whole year to reach their full height and even longer to reach their fully grown weight. Trying to get your dog to grow more quickly by feeding him more or exercising him intensely to build body mass is a dangerous process that could lead to the opposite effect. Even once your dog has reached his full height at a year, it will still take him another year to fill out to his final adult size. When do Standard Poodles stop growing? At a year old, your Poodle should have reached its total height, or at the very least be very close to it. There will not be much height growth after this milestone. Your dog will start adding body mass and strengthening the joints to handle the weight. A Standard Poodle should have matured and calmed down by the month milestone; however, this depends on the owner and how they have interacted and trained him in his foundation months. An untrained Standard Poodle can keep their momentum going until the age of 4 or 5 years. Do Poodle types have different growth rates? Yes, Standard Poodles are much slower to grow than other Poodles. These dogs are not small, and their bones and joints have much more growing to do. Miniature or toy breeds will reach their adult size quicker than bigger dogs. Miniature and Toy Poodles will already look the size of an adult dog by around six months old. What if my dog is overweight or underweight? Standard Poodles are full of high energy and fast metabolism. It can be challenging to tell if your dog is overweight, mainly if he is very fluffy. You should use your hands to check your dog to see if he is overweight regularly. You should easily be able to feel his ribs under his skin. You can also cut out all treats and increase his daily exercise. Making these small lifestyle changes can quickly help your dog lose that extra weight. For Poodle breeds, underweight dogs are very common, though. You could also increase portion size or opt for high-quality food with higher fat content, although this should be done under the professional guidance of a trained veterinarian. You can feed all the commercial foods, including kibble, wet food, and raw food, to your 6-month-old poodle. They will love these foods since they are tasty and are specially made for puppies. If you have a miniature or toy poodle, you must consider feeding these foods. You can also prepare the food at home. In that case, you need to use raw or natural food and some portion of the commercial foods. The combination would be an excellent food containing all the protein and nutrients for your 6-month-old poodle. Whatever you purchase or feed, you cannot just feed one food over the week. You should change and make a diet plan to include all the nutrients through different food sources. How much should a 6 month old poodle eat? The 6-month-old poodle should eat two cups of food daily. You can consider buying different food and mixing them to get the ideal food for your poodle. It can eat two times a day, and each time one cup of food is enough. Apart from the main meal, you may also offer some snacks to your 6-month poodle. It will enjoy having different flavors and a different taste from the snacks. Barking: There might be two reasons why your 6-month-old poodle is barking. It might be hungry, or it might be scared. Sometimes, we leave the poodle or pet alone in a cage or living place. Since they are tiny puppies, they might be scared of something unpleasant or unfavorable. Another reason could be that your poodle is hungry. They cannot bear the hunger and will bark until you give them food. So, you need to sort out the problems and stop the barking. Biting: Biting is a regular practice of your 6-month-old poodle. It might have all the new teeth growing, and it will try to bite everything. It will stop biting once all the teeth are grown up. So, nothing to worry about the biting. Aggressiveness: If you find your 6-month-old poodle is aggressive, there might be some reasons behind it. Maybe you did something wrong if you ignored the appeal of your pet. Therefore, it will show you anger and a threat of aggressiveness. How much sleep does a 6 month old poodle need? A 6-month-old poodle should sleep for 15 hours a day. If it is a miniature or toy poodle, the time will be around 18 hours a day. On the other hand, if you have the standard poodle, it will sleep for hours. Nothing is constant here; the sleeping time will depend on several factors. Whether the sleeping environment is suitable for the pet and what exercises your pet does every day will directly affect the sleeping time. How much exercise does a 6 month old poodle need? A 6-month-old poodle will need minutes of exercise daily. You can add walking, running, playing, and other activities to the exercise session. Whatever activities you plan, you must do it cordially. Among all the activities, walking might be an excellent exercise. You may go for a minutes walk every morning or afternoon. It will help your pet on both ends. Your pet will get to know about the other worlds and be familiar with the outside world. It will help the breed become a social being and better understand the perspective. You can show your affection and care through exercise, and your pet can build their muscle and become healthy through it. It will also help you make a good friendship with your 6-month-old poodle. How to train a 6 month old poodle? Training your 6-month-old poodle would be a significant challenge. You may attend some programmes where the professionals teach the pets. We will talk about three different training methods that you can follow for your poodle. Potty training: One of the best training methods is potty training. You must make your pet understand the bathroom. It should know where to go once it needs to release. At first, it might not seem very easy, but you can make it easier for your pet. You should take it to the bathroom once after two hours. And visually try to make him understand that other pets come here to release themselves. It will be a great way to give your pet potty training. Manner Training: The word might surprise you, and you may hear it for the very first time. But the truth is, you can teach some manners to your poodle. People worldwide try to teach some good lessons to their pets to help them become obedient pets. You should choose a name for your pet and call it by that name. If you continue for weeks, your pet will know its name by heart. Another manner could be eating. Since your pet is an animal, you should never expect to teach him human lessons. But you can change the way you eat. Show your poodle how other good pets eat slowly and not mess up the food. It would be an excellent lesson for the poodle. Sleeping Training: Your pet must sleep for a long time and should make a routine life to become healthy. Therefore, teach him the right time for sleep. Your pet will go through several weeks and will understand the training purpose. Final thoughts The size and weight of the 6-month-old poodle will vary due to their types. You will mostly find three different poodles. They are toy, miniature, and standard size poodles. An average poodle of a 6-month age will weigh 40lbs, whereas the miniature and the toy poodle will only be lbs. Just like people, Poodles can feel sad, depressed, excited, happy, bored, overwhelmed. The Poodle is known for being one of the most intelligent dog breeds in the world within the top 5 with a unique temperament. Being so elegant, particularly the show dog, many people do not realize just how friendly and "people orientated" a pet Poodle is. Senior Poodles - Senior dogs will sleep more often and naps will increase as the dog grows older. A Toy Poodle is considered to be a senior at the age of 10, a Miniature Poodle at the age of years and a Standard Poodle at 7 years old. Proper care for the Poodle will involve many aspects that will all work in combination to maintain excellent health and promote learning and good behavioral habits. It is important to establish a foundation of proper care during the puppy stage that will carry over throughout the Poodle's life. We will discuss: The items that you should have to care for a Poodle puppy Details on the 5 most important tips for proper care - Feeding, house training, offering the right amount of exercise, grooming and how to offer a healthy environment. Toy Poodles and Mini's will be puppies for the 1st year; standards mature at a somewhat slower rate and are considered to be puppies until the age of 2 years old. During this time, much care is needed for both physical growth and mental development. Bringing your new Poodle home is not as simple as just picking up your new family member from the breeder. Good care involves planning ahead. It helps to have all needed items well in advance so that you can focus on the puppy without having to rush out for a needed supply items. One of the most important elements to be aware of is that no matter what the puppy has been fed since he or she began eating solid food, you should have the exact same brand on hand. Quickly switching foods can cause upset stomach and other issues…and in the case of a puppy it can be the cause of hypoglycemia. A slow change must be made. If you opt to go with a different brand or to home cook, have enough of the 'old' food on hand for several weeks, as well as the 'new' so that that you can make gradual changeover. A quality dog bed — A new puppy will feel stress going to even the best of new homes. This is why making sure that you have a nice, soft, comfortable dog bed is important. You should show your Poodle that this is the area in which he can rest, sleep or just get away from noise when things seem to overwhelming. If you will be leaving your puppy home alone during the day, it is best to have the bed placed in the area where he will be staying. A gated off section of a room or inside a canine playpen works well. The entrance to this can be left open when you are home with your puppy can of course, closed off when you are away. In this way, the puppy will become accustomed to the area. If you will be home with your puppy, place this in the corner of room that is frequently used but not chaotic. Dogs like to have their own quiet spot, but not feel isolated. Walking and ID accessories — Along with a retractable leash and a collar for ID purposes, it is highly recommended to have a harness for your puppy. Toy Poodles no matter what the age and all Mini and Standard puppies should have on a harness and not a collar when they are on a leash. When a leash is connected to a dog collar, this can create too much tension on the neck, which can cause collapsed trachea. The trachea windpipe is protected by rings of cartilage…when this happens, those rings collapse in, causing pain and breathing problems. These can be purchased at a pet supply store and come in many unique and interesting designs so that your Poodle always looks stylish. If you are not sure which harness would be best for your Poodle puppy, you may wish to look to both 'Accessories' and 'Clothing- Harness' in the Poodle Specialty Shoppe. A Car Safety Seat - Long ago cars did not even have seat belts for humans. But now, of course, we all know how many lives they save. The very same is true for dogs. Even if you are a conscientious driver, you cannot be in control of those who are driving near you. Be sure to secure your Poodle into a canine car safety seat. All it takes is 1 second of you having to quickly brake for your Poodle to go sliding off of the seat, completely unprotected. These are also great for dogs that are prone to car sickness. A raised booster seat will assist a puppy in being able to look out of the window which reduces motion sickness. However, choosing high quality toys that can stand up to continual chewing and hold a puppy's interest is better. Puppies are full of energy and filled with curiosity; having a good supply of toys at all times will be very helpful. Puppies that are in the teething phase will be experiencing discomfort and teething toys will help to sooth sore gums and offer a chewing outlet See also: Poodle teething Grooming Supplies - Poodle care certainly involves proper grooming. This includes nails, dewclaws, bathes, drying, wrapping, trimming, clipping and topknots. See also: Bathing a Poodle Clothes - Particularly for tiny toy Poodles, protection against the elements should be implemented as needed. During cold, icy winters the use of canine shoes or paw wax helps protect paw pads from ice melt chemicals and aids with traction. A sweater or cute vest can keep a small Poodle puppy from becoming chilled. During hot months, shoes help protect sensitive paws from hot surfaces. Bowls - Plastic bowls often contain heavy dyes that can cause staining on a Poodle's coat. In addition, tiny scratches that easily develop in plastic bowls can also harbor dangerous bacteria. It is best to use stainless steel or ceramic bowls for both food and water. Dishes should shallow so that a puppy can easily reach both food and water without bumping their heads or straining to reach. Toys and Mini's may like raised bowls. However, Standards - who are prone to bloat- should only eat and drink from bowls that are at floor level. Free feed until 3 months old leaving food out at all times and then give your puppy 3 meals per day plus healthy snacks. Please choose your food wisely; cheaper foods with fillers will not offer the proper nutrition needed to aid with the rapid growth that is associated with the puppy phase. You will find that if you reserve snacks and treats as rewards for training, housebreaking and command training will go smoother. Read more: Feeding a Poodle 2- Start house training right away, keeping in mind that it is your commitment to the process that will bring about success. Generally, housebreaking takes 2 to 3 months. If your Poodle puppy will be expected to use an outdoor area, do not focus too much on indoor training when the pup is home along, since it is difficult for puppies to learn 2 different methods. Do keep in mind that young puppies should not be over-exercised since it can interfere with growth plate development; however a daily 20 to 30 minute per walk is perfect. Walks allow a puppy to release pent up energy, it expands their view of the world and is a good staring point for socialization techniques and learning proper heeling. Poodles are generally very active dogs. Aside from a walk each day, this breed loves to run , jump and show off their agility capabilities. Playing catch, Frisbee or training your Poodle to jump through hoops will keep them in good health, both physically and mentally. See also: Poodle Exercise Requirements 4- Begin a routine of grooming and care. While many puppies will balk at the idea of being brushed or having teeth cleaned, doing these tasks on a regular basis allows a puppy to become accustomed to being touched and taken care of. Taking care of the teeth during the puppy stage is important since dental hygiene will affect the adult teeth that have not yet erupted. Read more: Poodle dental care 5- Limit stress, focus on fun. One of the most important elements of Poodle care is to offer a loving, safe environment. Puppies and dogs are sensitive to their owner's moods and the atmosphere of the house in general. Puppies can become easily stressed in noisy, chaotic homes. Puppies should be given a designated area to retreat and rest if feeling overwhelmed. Often, a gated off area that is secured when a pup is home alone, but the entrance is open when owners are home works best. Speak to your pup in a pleasant voice and remember that positive reinforcement for good behavior works much better than scolding for bad behavior. Take time to puppy proof the home, clearing the floors of any small items and stowing away shoes and other objects to higher ground. This should be done before bringing a puppy home but also on a regular basis. Their body temperature at birth is around 94 — 97 degrees. They are not able to regulate their own body temperature so they depend on their mother for warmth. They also cannot see or hear or eliminate on their own. They cannot walk. About all they can do is smell, suckle and crawl. They are totally dependent on their mother and the environment the first 2 to 3 weeks. They are mostly influenced by their mother and litter-mates during this period. We weigh the puppies everyday the first 2 to 3 weeks. Week Two: Poodle Puppies usually open their eyes around 8 to 10 days and their ears around 13 to 17 days. While sleeping all healthy and contented puppies will twitch. This is an activated sleep, characterized by muscle twitches. This is normal and healthy. Week Three: During the third week we will often see teeth start to erupt and the puppies will start to stand and walk around. Everyday is amazing to see these helpless puppies start to become independent. At this age their nervous system is more developed so that they can urinate and defecate by themselves. This is when the puppies will also start to play a little bit more with their litter-mates. This week is very important in the puppies emotional development. They will start not only the interaction with their litter-mates but also with their mother. We never start the weaning process during this week. While mother may come out of the whelping box during this week she will never be far. Week Four: At this age the puppies will be introduced to our own homemade puppy mush and their supplement which will help grow their immune systems. Puppies are born without an immune system and depends on their mother to supply this protection through her milk. Their body temperature will usually be around degree and they will be able to begin regulating their own body temperature. Every day they will eat more and more. The puppies will start to eat more food and move around more easily. They may even start to chase each other, bark, and bite. We still weigh them at least every other day if not every day. This is the time that the mother starts leaving the puppies at longer intervals of time and start to regulate their nursing. So this is a good time for us to introduce the puppies to the weaning box and start the weaning and potty box training. Week Five: Puppies start to establish some sort of dominance in the pack. Growth and development is rapid in this week. They become very aware of their surroundings and respond quickly to training. They begin to growl, play, challenge, and learn disciple from their mother. They also develop a bit of a competitive spirit. Training ability is developed and puppies are ready to begin learning. They also start to discover their toys and play with them more. Keeping them stimulated is important. Puppies can start to control their need to potty and now know they need to move away from the sleeping area. Good experience with people from week 5 — 7 will play a large roll in how they will continue to interact. Week Six: By this time it is amazing to see that little puppy wake up and walk over to the potty box to eliminate. Puppies enter their socialization period by the end of the third week. However, the most critical period — age six to eight weeks — is when puppies most easily learn to accept others as part of their family pack. The integrating of the human family is so important and will effect them for the rest of their life. The puppy brain waves look of an adult dog by about the 50th day, but he is not yet programmed — that is the job of the human trainer, and the job of his mom, siblings and other canine family members. This is when the fun begins for all humans and puppies. We know how important this time is for puppy to adjust to humans and how playtime stimulates their little brains to grow smart and wise. We introduce them to the outside. We bring in more interactive toys. We introduce them to the pool, weather permitting. If outside pool is out we use the grooming bath for water play. They also learn not to bite the human hand ever! It is at the 7th week, day 49, that we conduct the Volhard Test. This is actual one of several that will occur through its life. Instead of meeting new or familiar people and objects with curiosity puppies start to react with fearfulness. Anything that frightens them at this age may have a lasting impact. So take care that the baby is not overstimulated with to many changes or challenges at one time. This does not mean that your puppy will grow up to be a scared-y-cat; it is simply a normal part of development where puppies learn to be more cautious. Careful socialization during this period helps counter fear reactions. Because your puppy is actively working on social skills and is paying attention to both litter-mates and humans. Your puppy is learning at an extremely fast rate. This is why we will NOT hold any puppy beyond the 9th weeks. All puppies that cannot be picked up during puppy pickup week must enter their puppy into a training program. Weeks Thirteen — Sixteen: During this phase a puppy will attempt to challenge you for dominance. Here is where they test to see just how much they can get away with and test your level of tolerance. The more a puppy is allowed to get way with during this phase, may cause the dog to lose more and more respect for his owner. This may result in behavioral issues that can snowball if not corrected through training and obedience. Formal obedience should begin here. This will assist the dog in becoming the best he can be. This is the time your puppy will begin to understand and use ranking in terms of submission and dominance. Are you the owner going to be a good pack leader? Puppies will need to be taught what they can and cannot chew. Puppies need to be taught that it is never acceptable behavior to jump on a human, small or big. This is the time that the pack leader, the human in charge, especially needs to be confident, but firm with positive reinforcement. An obedient dog, a good canine citizen, is a pleasure to be with. A disobedient dog causes stress for all and can cause damage to things and other humans. What do I mean by that? The canine depends on a human, however, he is and his thinking is canine. He needs the human to communicate and set the standards for him. If the human does not then the dog will have no choice but set his own standards, doggy style. Be prepared to be a Good, very good, pack leader! Your puppy now understands that he has a pack which may consist of both humans and canine and his behavior will be most influenced by this group. You can expect your dog to challenge you more as he explores dominance and his role in the pack. Rather they are just working out what their rank is in the pack and what is expected of them in their position. Again: be a Good, very good, pack leader! Canines that are not spayed or neutered will also start exhibiting sexual behavior during this period. Be responsible and spay or neuter you canine. Some puppy owners hire a canine trainer to come to their home to teach them how to train. Some owners learn ahead of time what they need to do and immediately begin their puppy on this program. Still others have their puppy enter into our training program. We have much information on the website about training. And for our puppy buyer we are here whenever they need any coaching along the way. Be Consistent, Persistent and always have a Routine!

Exercises Grooming From ancient Germany precisely around the 19th century had the now extinct mastiff breed Bullenbeisser and bulldogs brought in from England. At the time of their arrival, they served as hunting dogs for bears, deer, and other ferocious beasts, it would capture the prey with the help of its awesome teeth and detain it until the hunter arrives. And in the first boxer standard club was launched with a comprehensive document that is still in use today. Shortly after, the breed made its way into other European countries and got into the U. S in the late 19th century with the American Kennel Club taking registration of its first boxer around .During the first world war, boxers played the role of a military dog as a pack-carrier, a guard dog, and an attack dog, later they were taken home by the soldiers and got introduced into the domestic world as a show dog, best companion, and a reliable guard. One with so much life, energetic, curious, attentive, active, smart, sociable and incredible fun with children is the boxer, they are also known to be very patient and highly protective of their family members making them the love and desire of many homes. As active dogs, they need a lot of exercise to keep them mentally fit, apparently having a mind of its own, you will find your boxer entertain itself by digging the ground often, chewing, and licking the mouth to beat boredom. They are also very stubborn in character which makes them a terrible choice for first-timers with dogs, they are generally a bit difficult with adult dogs including dogs of a similar breed but friendly with puppies. They usually do not bark unless there is a genuine reason behind it but they love to growl. If you have occupied home with people around all the time or you want a canine buddy the whole time, then a boxer is just the perfect breed to get. Being a highly active dog, they dread loneliness and they can cope finely in both a house and an apartment as long as you provide it with enough room and spaces for exercises and activities. What you must have is a large yard if you are living in a house for it to dig the ground and run around as it likes. And more so, if you are given to being away from home most of the time, getting a boxer may not be the best for you and the dog, because they usually get aggressive when left alone. Boxers are known as loud snorers and they drool greatly too. Boxers are playful and very energetic dogs as such regular exercises are part of a good canine relationship, especially a breed of this sort. Your boxer should be allowed to play in a fenced area and on-leashed since it is likely to jump and leap around in excitement. This puts a boxer as a bad choice for a frail owner as they may find it a tad impossible and daunting keeping up with its excessive activity demands. Being a breed with a short and thin coat its grooming demands are quite easy and little, all it needs is a light brushing of the hair twice every week to maintain its good and gleeful looks. Bathing should be a once in a while since boxers are generally clean dogs and its nails, be trimmed once every month or as often as they grow worn on surfaces, its teeth should also be brushed daily to avoid tartar formation and other dental crises. Our Boxer puppies for sale come from either USDA licensed commercial breeders or hobby breeders with no more than 5 breeding mothers. Our kennel is located in New Braunfels, Texas. It is about 45 minutes from Austin and 30 minutes from San Antonio. New Braunfels, Texas is best known for river tubing and for its awesome water park, Schlitterbahn. Our family consists of our sons Andrew and Alex, my wife Dalia and myself. Both my son and I are really into boxers. I got my first pair of boxers about ten years ago. It was a boy named Scooby and a girl named Chata. They both had awesome personalities and were really fun to be around. Unfortunely I had to let them go in when my son was born. Our first boxer was a boy named Max. We got him when he was about 7 weeks old. He and my son were inseparable. They would chase each other around the house, take each others toys and even took naps together. In , we got our girl named Sugar Diva. She is more laid back, but is always on alert. She sometimes thinks she is one of the big dogs. She likes to run along side our boxers and even out running them at times. She acts like my sons little sister chasing him around the house, pulling on his pants and sleeping next to him at night. Max and Sugar Diva had their first litter in December .From there we kept our second girl named Memee. My son got her name from watching Clifford the Big Red Dog. In the show Clifford has a friend named Memee. In , we got our third girl named Xena. She is very calm, but very smart. She knows how to sit, beg and speak. A couple months later we got our stallion named T-Bone. My son is also responsible for his name. He is everything we wanted in a male boxer. He is tall, obedient, lovable and playful. In , our little boston terrier Princess had her first and only litter. She had 5 puppies that all went to family members well except for one. We kept the biggest boy named Rusty. He is my wife's bubblegum following her everywhere she goes. In fall , we had our last 2 litters of American boxers. While our love for the American boxer is very deep, we are now focused on raising European boxers. European boxers are a little shorter but they have bigger chest, bigger heads and more muscle definition. They have the same great personalities as American boxers do: playful, lovable and intelligent. They are breed to be both show and working dogs. Sandman Boxers have been a big help to us because he has shown us what to look for in a European boxer. He has been been raising both American and European boxers for some time now and has a great deal of experience with breeders from overseas. In we got our newest import, Talia. She is high energy and very playful. We are looking forward to raising not only great family companions but also healthy, intelligent and show potential boxers. We hope that you find our website both entertaining and informative. Once again thank you for visiting our website and hopefully choosing one of our boxers to be your next family companion. In conclusion, there are plenty of things you can do with your English bulldog in Arizona to keep them happy and healthy. How do you breed for a healthier English Bulldog? Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other breeders from improving the health of the English Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes the unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities. What are the steps of your adoption process if I am located in Arizona? Check out our available English Bulldog Puppies page. At times, we have available puppies but almost always have a waiting list as well. A quick look at our available puppies is the starting point to begin the process. Send us an email or give us call .If approved to adopt one of our puppies you are welcome to place a deposit to hold until your puppy is ready to go home. Greetings from the Wysongs! I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. This breed snores very loudly so buyer beware. This is a trait that these dogs are famous for and it is just a fact of life for them. Most English Bulldog puppies also drool and slobber so they are messy eaters, but most owners find these qualities endearing in their bulldogs. They are also prone to flatulence, especially when fed food other than their regular dog food diet. A once ferocious and tough dog — through select and skilled breeding — the bulldog has become a docile and loving pet and cherished member of countless families. The bulldog is beloved for its patience and affection for children making it an excellent family pet known for being jovial, charming and at times comical though messy. The breed is devoted, obedient and always willing to please, yet preserves its own independent brand of stubbornness present in the bulldog breed. Most of them are pleasant or even aloof towards strangers; however, some can be hostile to unfamiliar dogs, though the breed is compatible with most household pets. The fact is dogs are much happier when they know they follow their human. English Bulldogs can be a bit dominating so their owners are best to show strong leadership and understand alpha canine behavior. This is not a dog to drive around within your car, especially in the Arizona summer months. The breed is prone to mast cell tumors , skin infections, and hip and knee problems. Now that you know some of the best German Shepherd breeders in New Jersey, you must be wondering how much you will need to pay for a good puppy from a reputable breeder. The price of the German Shepherd Puppy can vary depending on several factors, including the breeder, the location, lineage, and their purpose in life. If you are getting a dog from a high-end breeder with a prestigious line of German Shepherds, you will of course need to pay a much higher price. As this dog breed is extremely intelligent and useful in many disciplines of working life, they are not usually purchased as pets, so you will have to expect to pay a little bit more, as their price increases because of this. Also, the price of a puppy will significantly rise if the breeder has done all the health tests and has each certificate to prove this. These dogs are less likely to suffer from any health conditions later in life, and are therefore, much more expensive. On the other hand, if you are looking to buy a service or police dog, then you can expect to pay a lot. Even though they can be really pricey, these dogs are worth it, believe me — their intelligence, capabilities, great temperament, and companionship make up for the money invested. We have done this research and compiled all this important information in order to help you choose a perfect breeder that will provide you with the best possible puppy. We hate to see our readers regret their decision of getting a puppy, just because they ran into a breeder that does not care about his dogs and clients. A true lover of dogs will never let their pups end up with just anyone, but will make sure that the potential buyer actually loves owning dogs and has the appropriate conditions for raising such a dog. On the other hand, a reputable breeder will also make sure that all his puppy parents are in perfect health, so the future puppies will also be healthy and happy. These are just some of the things you need to be careful of when looking for a German Shepherd breeder. Once you have that little fur pup with you at home, I am sure that you will forget all the stress and time spent in the process of searching for the right one, and he or she will bring light and happiness into your life. When looking for a German Shepherd pup, there are a few things you should take into account before making your purchase. When purchasing a German Shepherd puppy, be prepared to make a long-term commitment to taking care of your new family member. They will require regular exercise, plenty of socialization, and training. With proper care, your GSD will be by your side for many years to come. Reputable breeders are more than happy to show you where the dog was born, raised, and even introduce you to its parents. As part of your purchase agreement with a breeder, make sure there is some sort of guarantees included on the health of the pup for up to 1 year after making your purchase. This warranty will ensure you can take your pup to the vet if any health problems do arise in the future. Visit Your New Jersey German Shepherd Breeder in Person Before handing over your money, you should be allowed to visit with the puppies and their parents. If everything looks good and the breeder is reputable, take the time to ask them as many questions as you can about the pup, its parents, and how it has been raised. This will help you get a sense of what to expect in the years ahead. A responsible German Shepherd breeder will be more than happy to answer any and all of your questions and provide additional information beyond what is covered in this article. They should make you feel confident that you are making the right decision in purchasing one of their puppies. Reputable breeders typically want to ensure their pups go home and stay home with the right family so may be hesitant about giving out too much information over the phone or the internet. References will also give you an idea of what you should expect if you decide to purchase a dog from your new breeder. By talking to them and seeing how they interact with their dog, it will give you an idea of what life is really like living with one of these loyal companions. Meeting with past customers will also help you get a sense of whether the breeder is reputable or not. If everything looks good, take the time to ask your breeder for specific contact information from these families so you can reach out to them on your own. This will give you an idea of what questions to ask and what to look for when meeting with potential dog owners. This means they should be taking them for yearly check-ups and vaccines, grooming them regularly, and feeding them high-quality dog food that meets all their nutritional needs. The best place to get your dog is from a breeder who has an established relationship with a veterinarian they use on a regular basis. A good professional will be able to answer any questions you have about taking care of your dog and what it takes to keep them healthy throughout its life. Look Out for The Signs of An Unethical German Shepherd Dog Breeder in New Jersey Unfortunately, not all breeders are ethical and some may try to take advantage of your lack of knowledge or willingness to ask the right questions. There are plenty of them out there, you just need to be patient and do your research. This can include anything from congenital defects to health issues that may arise as the dog gets older. This will prevent them from getting out and exploring on their own. A Word on Crate Training You may want to consider crate training as your German Shepherd pup gets older as it can be a very effective tool for potty training and teaching them their boundaries. However, if not used properly, this method could actually cause more harm than good. I love animals and love helping people adopt a pet. I love the breed. I am wanting to purchase another GSD female. I live in New castle Pa. Please call me if you have puppy available. They are by far the best dogs we have ever had. We have had other breeds, however, and they didn't train as easy and they weren't as well behaved as our German Shepherds. And the fact that they are great guard dogs is a plus. Very loyal, protective, and loving. They are sweet but protective even at 4 months. That are our breed of choice. By far they are the best and only dog breed I would own. They stick to you like glue and love to play. .They are extremely energetic and require a lot of time for exercise and training. Socialize early! Like it says on here, it makes a HUGE difference in how they perceive the world. They are such amazing dogs and will always protect your family. When I was a little girl my German shepherd always was there at the bs stop when I got off. He was SO protective. I recommend this breed but they shed A LOT so please do your research. You can't ask for a better combination of intelligence, beauty, loyalty, companionship and protector of home and family. They have a fantastic disposition! They are very gentle, loving, and are great with children. What more could you ask for? They are alert loving loyal companions. The only reason I can't have one at this time is I travel to rv parks and most of them won't take them, so I get Jack Russells. Probably the polar opposite personality, but they are pretty cool. His hips are very bad, he has arthritis and ihave a very hard tome walking. Both extremely different personalities. Females are great watch dogs, while males are more of a personal guard dog. They both were so loyal, loving, smart, obedient, easy to train, beautiful and the best friend you could ever ask for. Be careful with table foods and novelty treats, their stomachs can be sensitive which can cause diarrhea and vomiting. I always fed my two German shepherds top of the line dog food. It is much more expensive, but will keep your dog healthier and help to live longer I had my shepherds groomed every other month. My male had long hair, my female had short hair. She shed so much twice a year I could have made pillows out of her hair. That's why grooming was so important for her. They are amazing dogs, they had a large vocabulary and could tell me when they needed something or something was wrong. They will be forever in my heart. I honestly can't say a bad word about the breed, except mine is an escape artist. He opens doors, locked gates and I still haven't figured out how he does it, although I have secured the gates. I've had other breeds, but German Shepherd are in a class of their own, Truly majestic! We had him shipped from Ohio to Phoenix Arizona. The shipping company was easy to work with. We have had the dog now for a year and he has a great temperament. Everyone who sees him says he is really a beautiful animal. This web site made it very easy to pay and have the dog shipped within 3 days. I am an owner of my forth shepherd. Excellent as a watchdog, too. Surprisingly playful. We need 2 German Sheperd puppies that are going to grow up to be strong potecters that can handle kids and cats. I have had a few and am looking for another. To me they are just so smart and loyal and the best. And they learn fast. They are the most intelligent, loving and best breed I have ever known. My daughter Nicole, loves puppies and her friend, has a German Shepherd named Lewis , and she loves playing with him. I hope you love these pooches as much as I do. We didn't order one from here, and my wife is alergic to dogs fur, but that doesn't stop my daughter! The puppy was in excellent health and he is so intelligent, not to mention beautiful. He was completely house broken within two weeks and was responding to commands immediately. I highly recommend purchasing from this site and especially this farm. They are very obident and they stick with you through everything. She was very intelligent and had pups 2X if I am correct. I am now a proud Pit owner, I love him - he is also obedient very playful and great with my Grandkids and family. I may be interested in another GSD in the near future are there any locations near Indianapolis, Indiana? We met with a breeder John and saw how wonderful his children were with the puppies. We met the mother and father along with her siblings. When little Fiona at the time we re-named her Raven came running out we both fell in love. The puppies had freedom on the farm and when we transitioned her from farm life to city life it was easy. She is beautiful, smart, and so well behaved with us and our puppy. A big thank you to John in New Providence for our little girl. We love her and are just beyond happy with her! Mine even lets them lay on him! They are so smart and extremely easy to train. Very good family dog and excellent guard dog. Love them. Rating: German Shepherd Breed Review by Elwood Clingan Great all around dog they have a high drive and must be tought to know there place in the family or you may have problems never let them think they are in charge an lead the way great protector and very kid friendly but plan on keeping them active as much as you can and training from a pup is a must Rating: German Shepherd Breed Review by Ruth Pluck Westwoods None German Shepherd Breed Review by Michael hartentstine Beautiful puppy. To bad it grows into a disgusting, slobbering, farting, over grown horse. Gentle giants, but they Thot they were little dogs! Especially when they try to sit on ur lap. .She died a few mos. They're not gonna protect unless ya love them as a true family member. Rating: German Shepherd Breed Review by reagan yes. Strong in character and their ability to and willingness to please. A forever companion with a loving and forgiving nature to the handler. It takes more than just mating a male with a female to produce quality. Having said that. The breed is protective, noble, honest and loving to the handler and family, and especially loyal. I would give him high star rating. He passed away at 13 and half years old. I only had to show him 1 time how to do sometime and he never forgot. Great family dog especially great and protective over baby's. I got Layla from a private breeder, and that is what I would more so recommend. Dogs from sites like this one are likely from puppy mills. Beautiful pup and not beautiful dog. We were able to meet the mother and father and we had no issues. In august of we got our second german shepherd pup Juno. She Is a beautiful bicolor female. Also the experience was good. No issues. Were able to meet mother and puppies. I recommend this site to anyone. We had no bad experiences and both our dogs are healthy , beautiful and wonderful with our children. Our German shepherd makes us laugh, angry, and totally in love with him. Anderson is an amazing dog and German Shepherds are an amazing breed. I will never go with another breed. Rating: German Shepherd Breed Review by Stephanie German shepherds are great dogs and with little training they catch on to many tricks and learn how to walk on a leash properly they are very protective of the family and angels to their family they are loyal, incredible, and smart dogs I highly recommend them they also are vary active and needs lots of exercise Rating: German Shepherd Breed Review by Sam Grewal i had a German Shepard for 13 years, he just passed away last week, German Shepard is a awesome dog, very handsome, strong, loyal, fearless, protective and above all very very intelligent dog, during the age between four months to a year they learn almost everything you teach, just have to be a patient while teaching but they learn faster than most other breeds. They shed lot of hairs but if you brush them twice a week then you wont see much shedding. I suggest German Shepard strongly because they make better family pet than any other breed. Needs groomed weekly. On the road to pick up ourGreat companion dogs, very protective of the family, great with little kids ,very intelligent, almost like they are trying to figure out what you are thinking. Rating: German Shepherd Breed Review by Brian Anderson Have 2 white ones I can't imagine life without them they are so in tune with people and understand a lot more than most dogs their loving nature matches their smarts and will always be up for an adventure my one tries to talk back when you speak to her it's hilarious to see she looks u in the eyes when u speak like she's really paying attention to every word haha no breed is better Rating: German Shepherd Breed Review by Tracy We used this site to find our Jake. He's a true blessing to our family. The dog I got is beautiful and healthy. Being from NJ I was a little hesitant on searching for a breeder. But I am so happy I took the risk and found a new best friend. She was the best dog I ever had. I am currently looking to adopt one to keep! After weeks of research my boyfriend and I decided on a German Shepherd. We are surprised everyday that he does not chew and has never one gone to the bathroom in he house. He is extremely well tempered with our patients I am a paramedic and he is a fireman , with hopes of turning him into a service dog on our local ambulance. WE could not have chosen a better dog or a better breeder, we recommend this site to all of our friends that are looking for puppy. If you can hang in there and put in the time and the training, you will have a loyal, loving, and intelligent lifetime companion. You will get back so much more than you can possibly imagine! Hes great smart amd loyal. But if i could rate breeder it wasnt 1 star. He had no knowledge of health issues and said the puppy had no worms but when i got him checked he had round worm. German Shepherd Breed Review by sophia German shepherds are very loyal. They are caring and aggressive in a good way Rating: German Shepherd Breed Review by sophia German shepherds are very loyal. Can't beat the loyalty and intelligence these dogs offer. German Shepherd learn's and understand fast. He is a wunderful Familydog. But you must train all the time and be a true companion! I cannot stress enough how thankful I am to have found the love of my life, thanks Donna! She is truly a blessing. Her temperament is so submissive it's unbelievable. My family owns two miniature poodles as well, and those two little poodles eat and drink out of her bowls and even boss my loveable 80 pound German Shepherd around and all she does is lower her ears and allow those little ones to do it. If you're looking for a loveable active dog to add to your family I recommend a German Shepherd from greenfield puppies percent. My puppy loves to play fetch and play ball all day everyday so be prepared to give your dog the attention it needs , these dogs are trained to be k9 dogs after all so keep that in mind. Words cannot possibly begin to express how thankful I am to donna and greenfield puppies for connecting me with my life long friend, I am forever grateful. Thank you so, so, much. I definitely recommend getting one that is young as they will bond with you quickly and I find its the easiest to train from a very young age, reinforcing all training as they grow. I socialized Augustus from the start at 8 weeks, taking him to festivals, socials, and family and family get togethers. I encouraged my friends, family, and strangers to pet him all over, pick his paws up, and just be personal. This is the best way to make your shepherd comfortable with others and makes for a better friendly face in public and your home. I live in a townhouse, with not much of a back yard, so we visit a bunch of parks a few times through the week to keep him active. Bottom-line, GSDs are great friends and an excellent choice. I find that Augustus mirrors my own personality and is very comfortable and relaxed in an array or circumstances and companies. The German Shepherd is one of the most versatile, well-recognized, and popular dog breeds in the world. The modern German Shepherd is descended from a family of various German herding dogs. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. Training assistance will help you grow in experience and build a strong bond between you and your German Shepherd puppy, which is essential. Also, the GSD has a thirst for training and fulfillment. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. With their versatility and athleticism, you can try a lot of different activities when puppies finish growing and they are cleared for higher-impact things. A fully-grown German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. German Shepherds generally live for years on average. Corporal Duncan brought him back to the United States and Rin-Tin-Tin became one of the most famous dog actors in history. Featured German Shepherd Article.

Also, never agree to take home a Frenchie younger than 8 weeks. These dogs are rather delicate, and they require specific care and to be close to their parents for as long as possible. This is not only good for their health, but also for proper socialization. They do great in apartments, but also in houses with back yards as long as they are properly fenced. However, while Frenchies do require some exercise to deplete their energy levels, they are prone to overheating, so you should also provide them with plenty of rest. However, the prices can be even higher if a dog has a rare color, such as brindle or merle, or if the bloodline is exceptional. This high price is one of the reasons why many people will try to find more affordable dogs, and will even agree to go to an untrusted French Bulldog breeder in Ohio just to save some money. However, this could easily be the worst thing you could possibly do not just for you, but for your dog as well. This is hardly what anyone wants or considers to be a good deal. You might also be tempted to buy from a puppy mill or a puppy store. This might seem like a good idea at first as they tend to sell cheap dogs. They are puppy factories in a way, and their only concern is to produce as many dogs as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, this can result in many health and behavioral problems that your dog might end up having. Puppy mills continue to sell their dogs to pet shops. The same bad-quality dogs will end up in stores. This is why many dog lovers are opposed to the idea of buying dogs at pet stores. This is a humane idea, and certainly the most ethical way in which you can get your dog. However, while we are not opposed to this — quite the contrary — there are a few things worth noting. You might be getting a seemingly healthy dog that will end up with lots of health problems in just a few months! Not just that, but many abandoned dogs have been abused or not trained properly at an early age. This can lead to severe behavioral problems. Sure, Frenchies are small dogs that are easy to handle. However, you might have to work much harder to get an adopted French Bulldog to be well-behaved and to stop expressing aggression. If you are ready for these things, then we would encourage you to help an abandoned dog find a new home. However, if this sounds like too much work for you, then it might be better to simply buy from a reputable French Bulldog breeder in Ohio. Why French Bulldogs? I was very lucky in that my breeder had a litter of puppies available at the time I was looking for one. In fact, I spotted an advert for puppies on Facebook, and I was able to go and view them right away. At the time, the pups were only four weeks old, so I did have to wait for four weeks until they were old enough to leave their mother and had received their first vaccinations. That time gave me a chance to buy everything I needed for the new arrival and to puppy-proof as best I could my home and garden. What is the breeding process at Snowy River Doodles? Our breeding program focuses on producing puppies with excellent temperaments, sound health, and beautiful coats. We carefully select our breeding dogs from top-quality lines, ensuring the highest standards in health and temperament. Our puppy has begun potty training and crate training. What does that mean? We use a litter box placed in their pen starting at three weeks of age and gradually make the pen larger as they begin to recognize the potty area. This trains the puppies to potty in one area. When you go home, that area will be outside. At six weeks, they begin spending time outside. At this time, they also start eating at least one meal a day in a crate by themselves and they spend some time in a crate for a few hours during the day. We put an old towel and chew toy in the crate with them. Do you ship? No, we no longer ship puppies. We feel that there are enough labradoodle breeders across the country to find one locally and there is no need to put a puppy through this stressful process. Tina was very responsive throughout the adoption process and you can tell she really cares about her dogs and where the puppies go. Eli has a huge personality and is such a sweetheart. Training was pretty easy as he is super smart. He adapted well when we added our daughter in and is very patient with her. We love our Eli so much and he has added so much to our little family. Thank you Tina for the best companion and snuggle buddy. He is smart, funny and still, at 6 years old, very mischievous! He is the second doodle I got from Snowy River Labradoodles. Sadly his brother, Baxter has crossed the rainbow bridge. They have the most wonderful temperament and are just so much fun. Tina does a wonderful job working with the puppies and is such a pleasure to deal with. There has never been and never will be another dog like her! She smiles at us, she stands up and hugs us when we get home, she brings pure happiness to everyone she meets! She is a little more timid when going out in public so pet therapy is not in her future career. She is still the sweetest! She comes around and gives everyone in our family love, not missing anyone. When you arrive home, she always goes and grabs her babies to show you. She knows so many tricks and was so easy to teach! Our year-old daughter taught her sit, roll over, shake, jump through a hula hoop, tell a secret, weave between your legs, high five and even how to push a button to ask for a treat. She likes to put on dog shows for our company! We really did our research before purchasing our first doodle and man did we choose right when we came to you! Provides DHA from fish oil for healthy brain and eye development Promotes regular and healthy stools with the special blend of prebiotics Gentle of small stomachs Not suitable for pups with a maize or gluten allergy or intolerance FAQs How much food does a French Bulldog puppy need? The amount of food your Frenchie puppy needs depends on how much your pup weighs, and whether you're opting to give them a wet puppy food or dry food diet. Every type of food will have its own feeding guidelines so you can use these to figure out how much food they should have compared to how much they weigh. When they get to six months, increase their food intake to up to two and a half cups daily, but only feed them two times a day. Frenchies are prone to obesity, so it's important to keep an eye on their weight. If you start to notice your pup is piling on the pounds more than they should for their age, you should reduce their portion size by half a cup. If you have any concerns about your pup's weight, speak to your vet. Can French Bulldog puppies have allergies? Allergies are a common problem with French Bulldogs. These can be genetic, but they can also be food-based. They can usually get acne that causes sores or dry, flaky patches on their body. If you spot your Frenchie pup excessively and constantly scratching, chewing or biting at their legs, paws, face, sides or their behind, it could be a sign they have an allergy. We suggest eliminating or isolating certain ingredients in their diet to find out the trigger, which can be a little trial and error. You can then opt to feed them puppy foods for sensitive stomachs as these are typically made without ingredients that dogs are commonly allergic or intolerant to. We would also recommend collaborating with your vet to find the best food for your French Bulldog puppy. She grew up always having at least one dog as part of the family and has experience in owning a variety of breeds, including Labradors, Cockapoos and Yorkshire Terriers. They are moderately active, but highly social which makes them well suited to life as a family pet or companion. This is a guide to taking care of them through their early months, from birth to puppyhood. Neonatal During the first 4 weeks of your French Bulldog's life, they should spend most of their time with their mother and litter-mates. It is highly unusual for the puppy's owner to care for them during this time and is best left to a responsible, reputable breeder. Your puppy's body will double in weight as their muscles, organs and bones develop. Nutrition During the neonatal stage, your French Bulldog puppy will get most of their nutrition from their mother's milk. At around 4 weeks introduce a few dry kibbles soaked in warm water. Health During this time it is important to monitor your French Bulldog for any infections, diseases or birth defects. Puppies are unable to urinate or defecate by themselves initially, so their mother helps them but may additionally require your assistance. Keep your vet's contact details close by and educate yourself thoroughly on this stage of puppy development. By the end of this period, your puppy will be mobile and will explore the world mouth first — be sure to keep choking hazards and toxic foods out of their reach Behaviour During most of this time your French Bulldog will be asleep or inactive, but they will soon be playing with their brothers and sisters. After weeks they will go through as much sensory development as a human baby does in a few months. It is important to avoid disturbing the puppies' mother as she will be likely be protective, but some interaction with the young pups is normal so they become used to human touch. Weaning When you take your French Bulldog home usually at around 8 weeks you should shower them with love and attention. This is a formative time for your puppy and will be when they learn to walk, play, bite, hold their bladder, and interact with others. Make the most of this time and treat every interaction with your Frenchie as a learning opportunity to develop their fun, playful personality. Nutrition During the weaning stage, you should slowly introduce into their diet a nutritionally complete dog food which is appropriate to your Frenchie's small size and young age. French Bulldogs are notoriously food-driven, but if they develop a taste for human food, they will likely become fussy eaters and cause headaches later in life by refusing dog food. Be sure to familiarise yourself with lists of toxic foods and plants to avoid. Colostrum, rich in natural antibodies, proven to enhance immune response 2. DHA from omega-rich fish oil helps nourish brain and vision development 3. Colostrum proven to balance intestinal micro flora, helps protect your puppy from common intestinal upsets 4. Highly digestible quality ingredients for superior nutrient absorption 5. Easy rehydration of kibble for weaning 6. Scientifically proven antioxidants to boost immune defence 7. No added artificial colours, flavours and preservatives Know more Health During this time you should provide your puppy with a small, shallow bowl of clean water and refresh the contents frequently. Your puppy will also need to be toilet trained during this time so that they don't make a mess of your home. Your Frenchie will soon be a fun and loyal friend, but for now you will have to clean up if they have particularly unpleasant bowel movements. You can combat this by not changing their diet suddenly as this will stress their digestive system. Behaviour Due to changes in diet and environment, your Frenchie will likely be under a significant amount of stress. As a social breed, it is important that you are affectionate and supportive during this time so they feel at home in their new surroundings. Yelling at your puppy during this will only alienate your Frenchie as they are particularly sensitive to human voice — being too aggressive with them may cause fear and distrust. Puppy By the time your French Bulldog reaches puppyhood their personality will be well developed. Show them love by appealing to their intelligent and often funny personality by playing with them regularly, exercising daily and introducing them to new friends from an early age. Nutrition Your French Bulldog puppy's diet should be based around a high quality, nutritionally complete puppy food. You may also wish to introduce them to fresh, lean raw meat — however, don't feed your puppy any meat you would not feed to a fellow human being. Keep snacks such as dog treats and table scraps to a minimum during puppyhood and familiarise yourself with lists of toxic foods and plants to avoid. No added artificial colours, flavours and preservatives Know more Health French Bulldogs have a fair amount of energy and should be walked regularly to avoid excessive weight gain. Be aware that later in life, many French Bulldogs develop breathing difficulties due to their unusually flat face. While mostly up to genetics, you can reduce the symptoms of problems by keeping your puppy fit and not allowing them to exert themselves on hot or humid days. After around 8 weeks your puppy will be due for some vaccinations, so they will need a checkup at the vet and to arrange for boosters. Behaviour French Bulldog puppies are generally very friendly and well-suited to spending time around other animals and children. However, it's very important to proactively introduce them to the outside world including other people, dogs, places and children to avoid development of aggressive behaviours based on fear later in life. It is highly recommended that you take your French Bulldog to puppy training classes. Recommended Articles. Puppy weight How can weigh your puppy at the vets or, and this is can be a more interesting and fun way if your puppy already knows how to sit, have them sit on a scale at home. It will not be as accurate as a scale at the vet, but it could be a cheap and fun experience for you and your pet. Because of this, your puppy may be a little stubborn about eating dry and wet food if they were only just recently weaned. Here is where the math gets a little more detailed, but not too complicated. When they are between 8 to 12 weeks old, the puppy should be fed about 1. This food should be high in calories since they need extra nutrients that they are no longer getting from their mother. This kind of follows the main rule when it comes to spreading out the meals to 3 times a day. But for younger pups, many owners will split the 1. Because feeding them 0. Once they are between 6 and 9 months old, they should be used to their eating routine. That is when the main rule is applied because by then, the pup will be maturing into its adult size and should weigh between 20 and 25 pounds. What about older dogs? Also, if you are wondering how much they should be fed once they start hitting their senior years, they should be fed a little less as long only if they are not as active. Make sure you still stretch out the meals to 3 to 4 times like when they were puppies because it is not uncommon for their stomachs to weaken with old age. Overweight or underweight? French bulldog puppies usually weight between 8. Once they reach 6 to 9 months, they are just at or are closer to reaching their adult weight, .If the puppy is underweight, then add very small increments to each meal every day until they are no longer underweight. It is important to not add too much food because of the possibility of them getting a twisted stomach. If the puppy is overweight, you can either slightly reduce the size of their meal until they lose weight, or you can give them more exercise. Many people prefer the later since it helps the pup to get stronger and adds more bonding time. The same methods apply to grown French bulldogs as well. Health factors like diabetes yes, dogs can have diabetes , can make your pup need a more strict diet or feeding routine. Here are some different diets and feeding routines. Raw food vs. Many dog lovers say that there are too many preservatives, fillers, wheat, corn, and protein in dry and wet food. While the raw food diet can be more natural, especially if it is organic, you also have to make sure your pup would be getting more foods with vitamins and minerals mixed in with the raw food that your pup would need. Raw food diets can be more expensive, require more storage room for the meats and veggies, and take longer to prepare. However, you would be personally ensuring that your little French bulldog pup is getting their full daily nutrition without harmful by-products and additives. Is there a good dry food diet? Possibly the biggest questions out of all of them: is there any good dry dog food out there and how do I find them? The answer is yes, there can be some healthy dry dog food products, but it takes some time to look for. The key is to look for dog food that does not contain any preservatives, fillers, wheat, corn, and too much protein. Fillers basically do not provide any nutritional value and can even harm your dog since most of the ingredients they use as fillers are common allergies for dogs that can cause skin conditions, bowel issues, and more. Wheat and corn are included since they are also a popular allergen for dogs. Too much protein is even more dangerous for them since it can put more pressure on the organs, throw off nutritional balance, increase the likelihood of diabetes, and can harm dogs that already have diabetes. After a few days, you can give your puppy only the new food. The most common is diarrhea. It might be worth a trip to the vet if your pup starts throwing up their meals, refuses to eat, or has allergic reactions to the new food. French Bulldog Puppy Diets French Bulldog puppy diets may consist of kibble, wet food, raw food , or homemade food. Each of these has pros and cons. Some pet owners go all in and make their own dog foods. This can get complex, as, with raw or homemade food, you have to be sure to give your dog all the nutrients they need to stay healthy. It is also typically more expensive than prepared meals kibble or wet food. However, the benefits might be important if done correctly. You know exactly what your dog is eating, no questions asked. Frenchies often have allergies and sensitive tummies. So you should avoid foods with too much protein but make sure meat is still the first ingredient! Also avoid or limit grains, soy, and wheat, as these are common allergens. The number of calories your puppy needs will depend on their age, weight, and exercise levels. Different types of food will also have different calorie levels. For example, they will generally need to eat more wet food than kibble for a balanced meal, because canned food has fewer calories. At the start of the day, weigh out the right amount on some scales and divide it between five bowls. Four of these will make up regular meals spread throughout the day, the final bowl is for you to put aside to use as training treats or to reward good behavior. This will help you to resist the temptation to use higher carb training treats. Feeding a French Bulldog Puppy Kibble The most affordable option, when considering both your time and money, is kibble. The most time-consuming and expensive are raw and homemade diets. You can find it easily at the store, and your only prep time will be to open it and pour it into a bowl. The biggest con is that there are some low-quality brands of kibble out there. As in any business, some are just in it for the money. However, these disadvantages can be overcome by choosing a high-quality brand. Look out for formulas specifically tailored for French Bulldogs. Specialized recipes are carefully shaped to help them out. Another good thing about wet food is that it keeps your dog hydrated. However, due to the water in wet food, it has fewer calories. Your pup will need to eat more wet food than dry food, making it the more expensive of the two. Wet food is also messier than dry, especially if your pup is a messy eater. It also takes time to prepare as you will need to buy the ingredients individually, and prepare the meals. Raw food also requires more clean-up time than any other food. Feeding a French Bulldog Puppy a Homemade Diet Feeding a puppy a homemade diet has many of the same pros and cons of feeding raw. Best Food for your French Bulldog puppy According to vets and French Bulldog experts in the US, the best bulldog diet should contain proteins, carbohydrates as well as an equal amount of healthy fats for brain power and energy. Just like humans, your dog could be allergic to some kind of food, such as corn or soy, but in most cases, they are actually allergic to fillers found in processed food. These fillers are used to add mass to the product, but have no nutritional value and are difficult to digest. The best way to save your dog from this kind of suffering is avoiding fillers and giving him whole food ingredients. These budget-friendly choices mostly trigger allergies and contribute to various health problems. Having earned the highest of all ratings, NutriSource is a great choice for puppies! golden retriever puppies for sale oahu hawaii - Please learn a bit more about our Boxers on our "Meet Our Boxers" page where you can see pictures, video, and information about them. We are a homeschooling family; therefore we are home everyday and able to provide our puppies with lots of attention and family interaction. Our emphasis here at Box Elder Creek is on doing our very best to provide families and individuals with a quality puppy; one that is healthy, well socialized, has an outstanding well-rounded disposition and has the look of a true quality Boxer. We do not have puppies all the time, as we chose to only have a few litters per year; in doing so we are able to dedicate a lot of time, care, love, and attention to each and every one of our puppies. We know that we have a very limited amount of time before our puppies will be leaving us and joining their new families; we feel it is our responsibility to get our puppies off on a great start in life while they are here with us, this helps ensure they will be ready and able to become a valued and much loved member of their new family. Boxers make wonderful family pets, they are great with kids and have excellent temperaments, but they are not for everyone. They love to be a part of the family and enjoy any activity that involves interaction with people, be that hiking, jogging, agility, games that make them think, lounging, babysitting, learning try clicker training , patrol duty, stealing children's toys to get everyone to chase after them, they are prone to collect shoes into piles they seem to think this is an important job , re-arranging the laundry is a favorite past time Boxers are always very helpful!! Life with a Boxer is never dull!!! They are silly and very much a jokester. Please make sure a Boxer is for you before purchasing one as they will test your patience at times. If you are looking for a dog that is independent, a Boxer is not for you as their family is very important to them and they tend to want to follow you around all day long. Boxers adore their family and it is very important that they be apart of it. I also highly recommend before purchasing a Boxer that you make sure you will have the time for proper training, as lack of training is the 1 reason Boxers end up in Boxer Rescue. We are delighted to welcome you to our website and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you into our Boxer family! All Rights Reserved. Life Span Did You Know? The Boxer is one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States. It has been recognized by the AKC since .Although the Boxer dog breed originated in Germany, their ancient ancestry can be traced back to the Assyrian empire war dogs of BC. The modern Boxer breed we know and love today was originally developed in Germany in the late s. English-bred Bulldogs and the Bullenbesiier were crossed to create an energetic and agile hunting dog to chase wild game. The Boxer is a popular family companion and a versatile working dog. As a member of the Working Group, Boxers can be found competing in dog sports like agility, obedience, and herding. They also make great service and assistance dogs, as well as therapy dogs, and can be found working as search and rescue dogs, drug detection dogs, police dogs, and military dogs. The Boxer is a muscular and energetic dog that tends to have a happy, friendly disposition. They bond closely with their families and tend to get along well with children and other dogs. They can even do well with other pets despite their high prey drive if they are socialized and trained with them. As long as they are well-socialized, Boxers are generally upbeat, playful, and friendly. Although they have a natural instinct to protect their family from unwanted visitors, they do tend to warm up once introduced and are happy to make a new friend. They can be prone to barking a lot if you do not work on socialization and training your dog to stop barking early on. Boxers can be highly adaptable dogs. Although they have a lot of energy and are better suited to homes with yards where they can run, they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get the daily exercise, attention, and mental stimulation they need. As with any non-arctic dog breed, they are sensitive to very cold temperatures. Boxers are also a brachycephalic breed, which means they are even more sensitive to heat than other dogs. A Boxer is also one of the most affectionate dog breeds. Because they bond so closely with their families and get bored easily, they should not be left alone for long periods of time. Potential health conditions to be aware of in a Boxer include hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, thyroid issues , and heart conditions like aortic stenosis and cardiomyopathy. Good breeding practices make a big difference and reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking the breeder about the health and genetic history of the parents and about any health tests that have been done. Boxers are intelligent dogs that are eager to please their owners. Despite their energetic personality, they are one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners and are highly trainable dogs. They tend to excel at almost any task put before them! Because of their open, friendly nature and high energy, they have a tendency to jump up at people in excitement and playfulness. Since they grow into powerful dogs, you will want to make sure you train your dog not to jump up. Boxers have smooth and short coats that will shed a little year-round and require minimal grooming. A brush-down once or twice a week and the occasional bath as needed will keep their short coat healthy and looking great. Nail trims once or twice a month are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long. Checking ears weekly and carefully cleaning as needed can help prevent ear infections. Checking and wiping their facial wrinkles weekly or a few times a week if your dog is prone to getting into things can help keep their wrinkles clean and free of irritation. Dental diseases, like gum disease, are the most common health issues in older dogs because dental care is often overlooked; and, it can lead to other serious health issues. Brushing daily, plus cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. The Boxer is a high-energy dog breed that needs plenty of daily exercise to stay happy and healthy. Due to their high prey drive and urge to chase, they should only be let off-leash in secure areas. Boxers tend to get bored with repetition, are excellent problem solvers, and are naturally exuberant. A fully-grown Boxer usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs pounds. Boxers generally live years on average. In Germany, the Boxer was one of the first dog breeds chosen for police training. Featured Boxer Article.
