This mix results in an intelligent, loving, and outgoing dog who enjoys being around people. They enjoy the company of both humans and other animals. They are generally good with children, although they may become overly excited if not properly socialized from an early age. Overall, Bichpoos make wonderful pets for families and individuals alike. The Bichpoo breed tends to have the best traits of both parent breeds. This makes them easy to train for tricks and obedience. They are also low-shedding, making them a good choice for people with allergies. These pups enjoy spending time with their owner and do not like being left alone for long periods of time. They make great companions for family life or individuals who are looking for an affectionate furry friend. Bichpoo Puppies Health Considerations Though generally very healthy and long-lived — with an average lifespan of around 12 to 14 years — our Bichpoos for sale are not without their unique health concerns. Like every breed of dog, there are a few conditions you should be aware of before you consider purchasing one of our Bichpoo puppies for sale. Understanding the risks allows you to know the signs and prevent small health concerns from turning into big ones. While these conditions can be costly to treat, the good news is that they can often be effectively managed with proper care. Finding a Bichpoo puppy for sale from a reputable breeder can dramatically — although, not eliminate — the risk of your dog developing some of these conditions. The coat is hypoallergenic and does not shed, making the Bichpoo an ideal choice for people with allergies. Although the coat does not require much maintenance, it is important to brush it regularly to prevent mats and tangles from forming. In addition, the coat should be trimmed every few months to keep it looking its best. Meet Bichpoo Puppies for Sale. It is considered a designer dog breed. The mix originated in Australia and started appearing in the late s. The goal was to breed a low or non-shedding dog that was sturdy and active with a temperament for families with children. The Bich-Poo is charming, affectionate, highly intelligent, and eager to please. They tend to get along well with other pets and with children, which makes them a great fit for families. Bich-Poos are also alert watchdogs. They can be prone to excessive barking, but training and socialization as a puppy can curb this tendency. Although they will alert you as a watchdog, they are more interested in making friends, so will not make a good guard dog. Bich-Poos are highly adaptable. They do well in apartments or larger homes as long as they get enough exercise and fit right in with families with children, other pets, or both. They do well in most climates and, as with most dog breeds, caution should be taken with extreme heat or cold. With this first generation cross, many of the health issues associated with the parent breeds are often not a concern. However, there is always the potential for inherited issues. Some of the potential breed-related health concerns are allergies, patella luxation, and progressive retinal atrophy. Because they are a small dog breed, they are also prone to breaks and fractures if dropped. This designer dog breed tends to be highly intelligent. That, paired with their eagerness to please their owner, makes them quick learners and fairly easy to train. They tend to be a good fit for owners of any experience level. Novice owners may want to enroll in obedience and training classes to ensure training and socialization is going as it should. A professional trainer can also help you put a plan in place to eliminate any potential issues with separation anxiety or the nipping that can become a common fear or anxiety response in small dogs. A Bich-Poo will often have a soft and curly coat. If their coat takes on Poodle properties, then it will be low-shedding and hypoallergenic. Common coat colors are typically light, like white or apricot, but can appear in other colors like tan, brown, black, or gray. Professional grooming every six to eight weeks is also a good idea for a healthy coat. You will also want to trim their nails monthly and clean their eyes and ears regularly. Although small, these dogs are robust and energetic. They tend to have bouts of high energy and require regular exercise throughout the day. Although they are active dogs, moderate levels of exercise will be enough to tire them out. Regular exercise, like daily walks and active playtime, will help immensely when your pup gets a sudden spike of energy and starts racing. Some of their energy bursts can seem endless, but, due to their smaller size, they do tend to tire quickly, so these bouts of energy will likely be on the shorter side. After that, your Bich-Poo will likely be ready for a nap and some cuddles. Keeping your dog well-exercised and engaged is key. A bored dog is one that can become restless and start to whine, chew, or bark. This designer dog breed usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and can weigh between pounds. A Bichpoo will generally live between years. Featured Bich-poo Article. The Bichon Poodle is a designer mix which has a Bichon Frise mother, and a purebred miniature poodle father. I prefer to break my treats into halves or fourths before a training session; I suggest finding the smallest size treat that will keep your Frenchie motivated! Though, you get what you paid for. Best Features What makes the Haige heavy duty crate so much better than any other dog crate is the frame. Young Golden Retriever puppies, in the midst of teething, will certainly try to chew up the crate. So, this feature provides a great dog-safe enclosure for your pup. However, the only negative for some people is the one-door option. It makes it slightly more difficult to access whatever you put into the crate bowls, pads, etc. Because the second door is on top, it provides a clever way of getting things in dog crate without the chance of your dog escaping. The degree rotated locking caster are 4 wheels that can lock in place for better mobility. All quality dog crate should have removable plastic trays, including the Haige heavy duty. Unlike other dog crates, this brand comes with a 3-year warranty. Check out the current price and more reviews on the Haige Heavy Duty here. I must have forgot that this crate included a bowl, water, and mat for the cage. I was so happy and for the price. Such a deal! My dog has separation anxiety and destroyed a standard wire crate and a plastic crate, injuring himself while doing so. But so far no damage or injuries. Plenty of room, our dog is 65 lbs and he can turn and move easily. It provides freedom for him with an added security to me that I still have control. He is a larger dog pounds but this is strong and durable. The sling pack makes it an easy addition to our walks. I highly recommend this product! This also does not come with a divider sold separately , which I think is such an awesome feature for dog crates. Security is always important with crates, which is why the New World crate comes with slide-bolt latches to ensure your dog is safe in the cage. In fact, Golden Retrievers much prefer to chew on socks! Like the first two options, this dog crate is foldable and can collapse in a few seconds. Easily slide out the tray and hose it down or wipe it clean with ease. As mentioned, there is no divider. So, I would only recommend this for adult-sized Golden Retrievers. If you were to purchase a divider separately, it would probably cost you more. To check out the current price of the New World dog crate, click here. Extremely secure, plenty of room for our golden retriever pup plus plenty of room for her to grow into , and the thick plastic floor is very easy to clean. This crate, however, is great value. I had one downstairs but it was too troublesome to move every time I went upstairs. Now, Max can sleep upstairs too. This is super awesome, and super neat! These dogs are very intelligent with a cheerful demeanor, maintaining their puppy-like personality well into adulthood. Often sought after for being loyal, social, and easy to train, Golden Retrievers are sure to become lifelong best friends to their owners. Golden Retrievers are very active dogs that require daily exercise. They enjoy physical activity, such as running and playing, but due to them being high-energy dogs, Golden Retrievers can easily over-exert themselves. This is one of the many reasons why dog crates are recommended for Golden Retrievers. Since they are naturally curious dogs, and with their playful nature, even the most unsuspecting of household items can be potentially harmful. A quality dog crate is a fundamental part of caring for your Golden Retriever. When your dog has a comfortable and safe crate to retreat to, this creates a peaceful, stress-free environment for your pup to rest. This is especially important for ensuring your dog can have some relaxation or nap time and not just remain in an adrenalized state throughout the day. When you are unable to watch or play with your Golden Retriever, it is important to keep them in a crate, to both protect them and your home. When they have a lot of pent-up energy and are left outside of a crate, that is when accidents are most likely to happen. A durable, heavy-duty dog crate brings dog owners peace of mind knowing that their furniture is safe from chewing, and, more importantly, their pup is safeguarded against injuries. Energetic dogs are significantly more likely to try to escape from crates, which can result in very serious accidents. If your dog is being housed in a flimsy wire crate, that can create a very dangerous environment for your pup, causing broken nails and resulting in teeth being snagged in holes. Additionally, wire crates are not designed for transport, providing little to no protection for your dog during car and plane travel. For at-home and on-the-road use, a weak crate lacks the proper safety features, leaving your pup vulnerable to potential injuries. Our three models; the Collapsible, Stationary, and High Anxiety crates, are constructed from durable, lightweight aluminum, allowing Golden Retriever owners to securely house and transport their pups with ease. Occasionally, Golden Retriever owners will choose the size 40 inch Impact dog crate. If you're picking out an Impact dog crate for your golden retriever puppy, our reps can help you choose the appropriate crate size based on their estimated adult size and how the crate will be used. Using the wrong crate size can lead to discomfort, restricted movement, and anxiety. Make sure you understand the role of a crate, not just for training but also transportation. Crate training for Golden Retrievers requires proper timing and practice. Where to place the crate and what to put in it will help make the most of your crate. Golden Retrievers will typically grow to by 20 to 24 inches tall and up to 75 lbs, so you need to make sure to get them the right size crate. Follow these steps to determine the size of your dog: Measure the height of your Golden Retriever: Have your dog stand up straight, Measure from the floor to the top of their shoulder blades. Add around inches to this measurement to determine the minimum height for the crate. Measure the length of your dog from the tip of their nose to the base of their tail. Remember to add 2 to 4 inches to the measurement. Measure their width by having your Golden Retriever standing with their legs slightly apart. Focus your attention on the widest part of their body, which tends to be the chest area. Once again, always add up to 4 inches to the figure. Finally, you want to consider the age of your Golden Retriever. For example, if you have a puppy, keep in mind that they will grow rapidly. You may want to choose a crate that will work for their adult size or opt for an adjustable crate with dividers, so you can gradually increase the space as they grow. Your Golden Retriever puppy will rapidly outgrow a nice crate that is not suited for an adult size. Types of Crates For Golden Retrievers Crates come not only in different sizes, but also with different structural elements. Below, we explain the pros and cons of each type of crate. Wire Crates Wire crates are popular due to their durability and visibility, They provide excellent ventilation and are easy to clean. However, bear in mind that some Golden Retrievers tend to find them less cozy than other options. Plastic Crates Plastic crates are a popular choice for travel. They offer more privacy and create a den-like environment for your Golden Retriever. Being lightweight, they are easy to transport and provide a sense of security. However, they may not offer as much airflow as wire crates. They are perfectly suitable for strong and aggressive chewers , which is a frequent issue among puppies! Bear in mind that steel crates can be heavy and less budget-friendly than other crate types. Soft Crates Lightweight and collapsible, soft crates are convenient for temporary use, such as short transportation needs. They are not suitable for dogs that like to chew or scratch as they are easily damaged. These crates come in various materials, including wood or wicker, and provide a stylish alternative to traditional crates. Yet, they may be less durable, and some favor design over ventilation. It has a removable plastic tray for easy cleaning and folds down for storage. Having double doors on the crate is a practical feature as it offers convenient access and flexibility in terms of crate placement. The secure locking mechanism adds an extra layer of safety. If you have a strong and powerful Golden Retriever, this steel crate is an excellent choice. It has reinforced steel tubing and multiple locks for maximum security. I used to worry while I was out, and would come home to a 45 min cleanup, not anymore! Thanks for the great product that is, as advertised. It effectively prevents the dog from escaping and causing damage to the surroundings, giving peace of mind when leaving my dog alone. Durability and strength: The crate is built to be indestructible, and it lives up to its claim. The sturdy construction and quality materials used make it resistant to escape attempts and capable of withstanding the efforts of even the most determined dogs. Cons: Inconvenient assembly and weight: The crate can be challenging to assemble due to the use of hex screws, which may not be the most user-friendly option. Additionally, it is quite heavy, making it less portable and difficult to move around. Grated bottom design: The grated floor of the crate, although intended for easy cleaning in case of accidents, may not be comfortable for dogs to lie on or move around. Some dogs may find it less appealing, and additional padding or a flat surface may be necessary to ensure their comfort. This soft crate is lightweight and portable, making it ideal for temporary use. It features three mesh doors for easy access and ventilation. I used it for a weekend dog show and plan on using it often. I may need to purchase another for my other pup! It provides ample room for your golden retriever puppy to stand up and stretch out, allowing for comfort and mobility. Lots of ventilation: The 4-door model offers excellent cross-ventilation options, making it suitable for hot weather conditions. Sturdiness and portability: The crate feels sturdy and durable, giving you confidence in its ability to contain my dog. Lightweight: Despite its strength, it is relatively lightweight, making it easy to transport and handle. The included storage bag with various handle options adds to its portability. Cons: Limited instructions and assembly complexity: The provided instructions were not comprehensive, and there was a lack of guidance on disassembling the crate. Assembly can be straightforward, but taking it down and folding it back may require some trial and error. It may not be suitable for dogs with such behaviors, and additional caution is necessary. Additionally, the larger windows and netting material can pose risks for puppies, as they may get caught or try to escape through them. This aesthetic crate combines the functionality of a wire crate with a stylish cover. It blends well with home decor and provides a cozy den-like environment for your Golden Retriever. No more stuck paws. After my puppy got her paw stuck twice in the kennel bars and woke me up screaming, I knew I needed to find a way to make her kennel safer. This is a great solution. Not only does it keep her from accidently getting caught in the bars, it looks great and is high quality and well made. My huge kennel looks so much nicer in my room now and the crate pad is pretty nice. I love the option for side or front entry too as my kennel has both. The fabric is described as plush and the bumper and pad offer protection from the wires of the crate, making it more den-like and cozy. The set created a more appealing and inviting space for the dog. Cons: Inadequate size and ties: There were issues with the sizing and ties of the bumper set. The side panels were reported to be slightly short for the cage, which could affect the overall fit and coverage. Additionally, the ties on the bumper set were not sturdy enough and ripped easily, particularly during playful interactions inside the crate. Misleading washing instructions: While the packaging stated that the set was completely machine washable, the bumper was later found to be spot clean only, resulting in twisting and seams starting to rip after washing. One user felt that the packaging and description were misleading, and that clearer instructions should have been provided. Advantages of Choosing the Right Crate Size Comfort A properly sized crate ensures your Golden Retriever has enough space to lie down, stand, turn around, and stretch comfortably. Safety The right crate size prevents your Golden Retriever from getting stuck or injured while inside. It reduces the risk of accidents or escape attempts. Effective House Training A correctly sized crate aids in house training by discouraging your Golden Retriever from soiling their sleeping area. It helps establish a routine and promotes bladder control. If the crate you choose is too small, your dog will be uncomfortable. And if the crate you choose is too big, they may feel comfortable pottying inside of it. Downsides of Choosing the Wrong Crate Size Beware of some of the most common issues when picking the wrong crate size. A crate that is too small can cause discomfort, stiffness, and limited mobility for your dog. Insufficient space in the crate may prevent your dog from stretching, changing positions, or engaging in natural behaviors. Finally, a cramped or confining crate can lead to anxiety and stress for your Golden Retriever , resulting in behavioral issues or reluctance to enter the crate. A crate offers several benefits for both you and your Golden Retriever. Crates provide a secure and private space where your Golden Retriever can retreat when they need rest or alone time. The crate helps build a routine and provides a designated area for your dog. Crating your Golden Retriever when unsupervised can prevent them from engaging in destructive behaviors, such as chewing furniture or household items. Finally, a crate will give your dog safety and prevent distractions while traveling in a car or an airplane. Benefits Of Crate Training Crate training can present many benefits, such as accelerating house training. The crate helps establish a routine and teach your Golden Retriever to hold their bladder and bowels until they are outside. For anxious dogs, crate training can provide the safety and secure space they need to rest and feel protected. Finally, crate training also reduces separation anxiety through a cozy environment. Of course, it is important to ensure the crate is well-ventilated and meets the necessary travel requirements and airline approvals. Ideally, you want to start crate training when your Golden Retriever is still a puppy. Puppies are more adaptable and open to learning. However, that being said, crate training can be successful at any age. Make it more comfortable by providing toys, blankets, and treats. Step 2: Once your pup is at ease, close the door and bring toys and treats inside. Keep an eye on them and let them out if they become distressed. Step 3: Increase the time your puppy spends in the crate with the door closed gradually, and step away from the crate while they are distracted. Step 4: Extend the time you are away from the crate. Remember, crate training requires patience , consistency, and positive reinforcement. Make it comfortable! Add a soft and washable bedding for your Golden Retriever to rest on inside the crate. Never rush the introduction phase. Always introduce the crate slowly, allowing your dog to explore and associate it with positive experience. They should always see the crate as a positive place to be. Clean the crate regularly. Opting for washable beddings makes it easy to maintain the crate. You should also wipe down any surface after use, especially for temporary or transportation crates. Remember to use safe and gentle cleaning products. Provide toys and chewable treats for your dog when they get in the crate. This will engage their mind and keep them entertained. Make sure you put the crate in a quiet, sheltered and well-ventilated spot inside your home. Poor placement of your crate may cause stress for your dog. Conclusion Choosing the right crate size for your Golden Retriever is crucial for their comfort, safety, and effective training. Measure your dog accurately and consider their age when selecting a crate. Bear in mind that crates can come in a variety of materials, so it is important to familiarize yourself with the pros and cons of each crate type. It may be worth having more than one crate if you suspect they will need to cover different purposes. Finally, crate training your Golden Retriever provides numerous benefits, both for your dog and for you. Generally, it is recommended not to exceed hours for adult dogs. Should I crate my Golden Retriever at night? Crate training your Golden Retriever at night can help with house training and provide a safe space for them. However, ensure the crate is appropriately sized, comfortable, and placed in a quiet area. Is it better for dogs to sleep in crate or bed? Some dogs feel more secure and comfortable in a crate, while others may prefer sleeping in a bed. What age can dogs stop sleeping in crate? The age at which dogs can stop sleeping in a crate varies. Some dogs may be ready to sleep outside the crate as early as months as they are fully house trained too. Others may benefit from longer crate usage as their house training progresses. Most pet carriers are designed with safety features that protect your dog from injury during travel, such as secure latches and ventilation. Additionally, many airlines require pets to be transported in an approved carrier that meets certain size and weight restrictions. It is always best to consult with a veterinarian or animal transportation specialist for advice on safe and comfortable ways to transport your dog. Galen has been connecting quality Golden Retriever breeders with loving families since and is the founder of My Golden Retriever Puppies. He and his wife have four children and love spending time together, traveling lived oversees for 4 years , enjoying the outdoors and connecting Golden families. Be the first to know when we have new puppies! All Rights Reserved. Too large or too small and it will not be fit for purpose. You have to get this just right. This article will discuss all these factors so that by the end you will be highly informed and confident in making the correct buying decision. A crate should be just big enough for your dog to stand up without hitting their head, to turn around comfortably, and provide room to lay on their side with their paws stretched out before them. This is an unnecessary waste of money. Many brands of dog crates have dividers available that can be used to reduce the available space of a larger crate to suit a puppy. The divider is a removable panel you can place inside the crate to reduce the space to suit the size of your dog. So my advice is to buy a crate large enough to suit an adult Golden retriever, then use a divider to scale it down to a size that suits a puppy. This will save you money in the long run. However, the best way to know what size crate your Golden Retriever needs is to measure their size and buy the crate that best fits. Add 4 inches and this is the height of the crate you want to purchase so your Golden can comfortably sit or stand inside without hitting their head on the ceiling. Secondly, have your dog stand on all fours and referring to the picture, take measurement B, from the base of their tail to the tip of their nose. Again, add 4 inches and this is the perfect length of the crate for your Golden to be able to lay down comfortably without being cramped. So to summarise, your Golden needs a crate of height A plus 4 inches, and of length B plus 4 inches. So now you will be able to get exactly the right size crate for your adult Golden Retriever. But how about buying a crate for a puppy? As previously discussed, I recommend you purchase a crate for an adult Golden and use a divider to make it suit your puppy, thereby doing away with the need to upgrade to increasingly bigger crates 3 or 4 times during their first 18 months. But if you do wish to have crates just right for your puppy without the use of a divider, please take measurements as detailed in the previous section to guide you in your buying decision. And be prepared to upgrade and replace every 4 or so months as they grow. The sheer number of different styles of dog crates on the market is quite startling. There are crates made of wire, plastic, wood, cloth, and many more besides. As explained on www. There is still some variety of styles available within this one type: Some have a single door, some have two or three. Most have a removable plastic tray at the base…but not all. But with these choices aside, what are the pros and cons of a wire crate: The Advantages Of A Wire Dog Crate Very strong, durable and long-lasting Very easy to keep clean Most have a slide out tray as a base that makes cleaning after accidents very easy make sure to look for this feature when buying! Folding ones are available for easy storage or moving the crate They allow the maximum flow of air compared to other styles, making them most suitable to hotter climates. They allow maximum visibility of the surroundings to the dog inside. This can be important for some dogs. Dividers are readily available for most models so you can buy a large one and re-size it for a puppy instead of replacing it as they grow. Though you can of course cover them if necessary. They are one of the easiest types to escape from if your dog is a budding Houdini! They are noisy if placed on solid surfaces and you have a fidgety dog.

Our FURbabies are raised around children so they are ready to be perfect family pets. French Bulldogs are your typical lazy but fun type of dog. They need very minimal exercise so they are perfect for a laid-back family. The average life span of Frenchies is years old They have a wonderful sense of humor and will make you laugh every day. They are perfect for even a small apartment. French bulldogs cannot live outside, for they have brachycephalic, also known as being "flat-faced" which makes it difficult to regulate their body temperature so they will need to live in a climate-controlled environment. Frenchtons on the other hand are more active and can withstand the climate a little more, which makes them perfect for an active family that wants a frenchie look but not the laziness. Frenchtons average life span is years. They are a mix between a French bulldog and a Boston Terrier and sometimes other breeds to get a certain color. Having the right tools makes all the difference. You also need some tasty treats. Use pea-sized pieces of cheese, small bits of cooked chicken, or one of these yummy German Shepherd healthy treats of your choosing. Follow this German Shepherd training guide to teach your dog the basics of obedience at home. How to Train a German Shepherd to Sit Teaching your dog sit is one of the easiest German Shepherd training commands for your puppy or dog. Your pup sits hundreds of times in a day. Now all you need to do is connect the motion to the command. Teach Sit Step-by-Step Start with your dog in a standing position. Have your reward treat in your hand. Show your pup the treat is in your hand. Move your hand over their head as you keep the treat near their nose. As their head raises to look at the treat, their bottom begins lowering to the ground. We want your dog to associate the correct motion with the reward first. After a few sessions, say sit when their entire bottom is on the floor. Remember to reward them only when their bottom is on the floor. Once you are sure they know the command, increase your distance from them when you give the sit command. Your goal is to say sit from a long distance and your puppy performs. Practice in different rooms inside your home and use a variety of distances while training indoors. Move to the outdoors with a secure long leash when your pup is ready for more distractions and distance. Start with the last success. Stay keeps your dog in one spot until you release them and is essential training. For advanced training, use stay to transition from one command to the next. Begin indoors in a quiet area free from distractions. Hold the leash in your left hand. Use the right hand to signal to stay while standing directly in front of your dog. Raise your hand and turn your palm toward your dog. When he stays with success, walk toward him and give him the treat. Now add in the word stay when your dog performs the stay behavior correctly. Increase the stay time your dog is in the stay position beginning with 5 seconds and working up to one minute or more. Next, work on extending the distance between you and your dog while in the stay. Take a few steps back each time you train. Your goal is to reach the end of your leash while your pup stays in place. This could take many sessions over weeks or months. Guide to Advanced Stay Techniques Once you are at the full distance of your leash, drop the leash and work on having your dog stay while you move into different rooms. Add in distractions, such as friends walking around while you train your GSD. For the final steps, have your dog on the long leash and train in your backyard. Extend the leash as far as it will reach and have your dog stay in place for 30 seconds or longer. Move to outdoor training at a quiet park and repeat the steps for increasing distractions. You can use this time to plan for the next command or simply to have them wait on you. Teach Down Step-by-Step Start with your dog or puppy in a sitting position. Have a tasty treat in your closed hand. Let them see you put that treat in your hand. Move your hand toward the floor in front of them. Your pup will follow the treat into a down position. Offer them the tasty treat and praise them immediately when they are in the down position. You want to make sure they know the motions first. Continue practicing this technique throughout the day. After a few sessions with your pup performing the correct motion, add in the word down. Give him his tasty reward when he is in the down position. Practice in different rooms to ensure your dog knows the command. Move to areas where there are distractions, such as a busy room in your house, and even outside while on a leash. Use the long leash for outdoor sessions and safety. Increase the time your dog is in the down position by taking a long time to offer the treat. A reliable recall come is part of your basic obedience training. When they come to you, reward them with a happy voice and a good boy. You may want to step a few feet backward while calling him. This lures him to follow you. Once your dog reliably moves toward you when you call them, add in the word come. Reward them and repeat the exercise using different distances and the word come now. Increase the distance you are away when you call him inside the house. If your German Shepherd performs the command reliably, add in farther distances. Reward them when they respond correctly. Practice many times with the word come while you are in the same room. Now, call him from farther and farther away in different rooms. Use distractions in the home while practicing. Call him while other people are in the room. Next, use both different rooms and a variety of distractions together. But only if he ignores multiple distractions. If he responds correctly during multiple training sessions, leash him with the long leash mentioned earlier as an essential tool and train him outside to work on concentrating with outdoor distractions. Repeat the process you used indoors practicing with varying distances and distractions outside. Use this guide for a fast recall and to save yourself some stress on this command. They familiarize your dog with the many ways in which they might get asked to perform their commands. These extra steps are invaluable to the quality of your German Shepherd obedience home training program. See how long you can have your dog stay while you move into different practice areas and work on increasing the time. Try to keep his attention on you during his training despite other distractions in your room, inside your house, or outdoors. If your GSD seems to have forgotten their command, take them back to the last place they were successful and begin training from there. Not all of your days are perfect, right? German Shepherds have been giving their talents for many years to support people with medical issues by alerting them to possible seizures or calming someone with anxiety or PTSD during an episode. According to the German Shepherd Dog Club of America , training your dog at home is essential to a life of success and happiness with a German Shepherd. Professional experts recommend slowly introducing puppies to other dogs that are well-mannered and different people at that age, too. Your dog needs to have its first dose of vaccinations before attending socialization classes, and of course, a deworming treatment to avoid infecting other dogs. Have their 6-, , and week vaccinations against distemper, measles, parainfluenza, parvovirus, adenovirus, and rabies before beginning obedience training. Consider the following optional vaccines: kennel cough, coronavirus, Lyme disease, and leptospirosis. Most trainers work with aggressive behavior in dogs at a higher price. Punishment-Based Dog Training? Be careful where you choose to train your German Shepherd since not all training schools use modern dog training practices, and some even use force to train your intelligent breed. Make sure you are comfortable with the handling of your dog and stay away from punishment-based dog training. Punishment based — Choke, shock, or otherwise cause pain to the dog when bad behavior is chosen. Rewards-based — Reward with food, praise, or sounds. The program I use and support is the Brain Training for Dogs Academy, which is entirely positive and rewards-based training. You can also use games to help train your German Shepherd and keep costs lower. Group classes and obedience courses generally are taught at a facility that will give everyone and their dogs enough room to maneuver and have space. But a private session may take place at your home if requested and the dog trainer will charge travel fees. So, train your puppy or adult dog right from the start. German Shepherds are highly intelligent and loyal. With proper training and socialization, they are also obedient and great with other dogs and children. Dog Training Elite has years of experience with German Shepherd training and has developed obedience and personal protection training programs suitable for this breed. Because of their intelligence and natural herding instincts, German Shepherds can also be trained as service dogs. Like any intelligent dog, however, a German Shepherd without proper training can become a handful. Their intelligence can lead to stubbornness. Extensive training and socialization are key to harnessing the unique abilities of this breed and diminishing any potential destructive behaviors. Thankfully, the high intelligence of German Shepherds enables them to learn commands quickly. The professional training of Dog Training Elite will help any German Shepherd become an incredible companion to individuals and families. Adults Dog Training Elite recommends starting dog training as early as possible, soon after a puppy is ready to leave its mother. Puppies are capable of learning basic commands, and smart German Shepherd puppies do great with early training. Dog Training Elite has adult dog training programs as well. A complete puppy training typically takes a few months. Adult dog training can take longer or shorter, depending on whether a dog needs to unlearn bad habits in addition to being trained. Working with a German Shepherd and the owner directly in the home allows dog trainers to create personalized training plans for individual dogs, as well as address any unique needs or issues. Once a dog has completed in-home training, they can take group classes for more in-depth training - Dog Training Elite offers both puppy and adult dog group classes. Beginning training in the home also helps owners bond with their dogs so when the dog trainer leaves, no progress is lost. This includes developing conditioned or automatic reflexes to commands. In its simplest form after proper conditioning , when the owner says "sit," the dog automatically sits without thinking about it. Our unique techniques ensure our program is a success no matter what behavior we encounter. Empowering Owners We empower owners to train so their dog knows who to obey at all times. Personalized We deal with problem behaviors on a personal basis. Environment Specific We train wherever issues tend to arise i. Supportive We support owners in the off-hours when training is "not in session". Involved We work with all members of the household. Satisfaction Ratings Our high client satisfaction rating sets us apart from competitors. Also, be consistent about rules - establish at the beginning, for example, whether or not your dog is allowed on the couch. An energetic dog with little to no exercise can become a destructive, disobedient dog. Training is a great way to give German Shepherds the mental and physical stimulation they need. Dog Training Elite has developed training programs for puppies and adult dogs alike based on positive reinforcement. German Shepherd training with our in-home option is entirely possible. Read on to learn more about the Dog Training Elite training method. The Dog Training Elite Difference Dog Training Elite uses modern training methods focused on positive reinforcement and bonding between dog and dog owner. Dog Training Elite never resorts to the use of punishment to help dogs unlearn bad behavior. The difference becomes clear when comparing a dog that is trained out of anxiety and intimidation vs a dog who truly desires to please from the inside out. The Dog Training Elite training theory is mostly based around classical conditioning, also known as the Pavlovian method or respondent conditioning. In its simplest form after proper conditioning , when an owner says "sit," their dog automatically sits without thinking about it. Through a combination of commands and an electronic collar, dogs learn to follow commands at once. Other dog trainers use harsh static collars or spray collars which have been shown to be less effective. Ready to turn your dog into a loyal and loving companion? Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack. Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services? You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment. How old should a puppy be for training? If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills. In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings. What is a dog boot camp? A dog boot camp is basically a board and train program that focuses on training your dog or puppy. The trainers will work with your dog to curb unwanted behavior, teach them basic skills and show them how to walk on a leash. How long does it take to train a puppy? Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges. Which dog training method is best? The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do or not do a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behave as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs or people that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods: What type of training methods do you use? What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer? We specialize in breeding Mini Goldendoodles as well as a few other breeds. We also have partnered up with several other high quality breeders that raise mini goldendoodle pups that meet our strict genetic criteria and testing. So we usually have a good selection of very high quality puppies. View Our Available Puppies! Not all mini Goldendoodles are equal, there are a few different versions to choose from each having a little different genetic background based on the pups parents. We will explain all the differences in Mini Goldendoodle puppies and how they are bred below. We raise all versions of the mini goldendoodle breed. F1 Mini Goldendoodle Pups. A F1 puppy is also known as a First Generation puppy. The puppies mother is a Golden Retriever and the pups dad is a Mini Poodle. This version of mini goldendoodle usually has soft wavy or curly puppy fur. They will shed until they lose their puppy fur, after shedding they will shed a lot less, but will shed. This version is partially hypoallergenic and usually requires low maintenance. F1 mini goldendoodles usually need to be groomed every 6 months along with daily brushing to keep their curly hair from matting and getting tangled. The dogs usually grow up having great temperaments similar to golden retrievers. They usually get about inches high at the shoulder and range in weight from pounds. F1b Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1b is known as a second-generation mini goldendoodle with the pups mother being already an F1 Goldendoodle and the pups dad being a mini poodle also. So the difference between F1 and F1b is that the mom is not a golden retriever but an actual F1 Goldendoodle. They also have very soft curly hair but with almost no shedding. This F1b version is semi-hypoallergenic and a better choice for anyone who has pet allergies. The F1b also should be brushed on a daily basis but will need to be groomed more frequently then a F1. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is recommended to keep their coat in perfect condition. F1b Mini goldendoodles get around 18 to 20 inches tall at the shoulders and range between pounds in weight. F1bb Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1bb goldendoodle is also known as a third-generation mini goldendoodle. This mini goldendoodle version has a coat more similar to a poodle than of a golden retriever. This is because the pup is more of a poodle than a retriever. Making it the very best version for anyone with pet allergies. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is required to help prevent knots or matting. This version is super intelligent and loving, and usually seems to have more energy than the other versions of Mini goldendoodles. This version is usually smaller in size, weighing around pounds and only getting inches tall at the shoulders. The smaller size makes them a great size for smaller homes and apartments. About Us Health Guarantee Modern breeding practices, such as DNA panels, allow us to guarantee that no puppy will be born with hereditary disorders or hereditary illnesses. All puppies come with a 2 year health guarantee against these illnesses. All our dogs are thoroughly health tested by the age of one for at least hereditary defects and diseases, as well as congenital defects such as hip dysplasia, and cardiac health. We are located in Pine Bush, NY. We are a family run operation. My husband Michael, my mother Julie, and myself give all we can give to our dogs and the raising of these puppies. Julie is an especially huge part of my life, and my dogs lives today. She started breeding Dobermans in .In the late 90's when I was a child we were gifted two Silky Terriers by my father, after the loss of my first dog, Shadow - a field spaniel. Like we are today, we have always been at-home breeders. It was a wonderful experience. With the guidance of our vet, we helped whelp birth , and socialize all of their puppies, and placed them into happy homes - many of whom were our neighbors, family and friends. Sparky, the last of our silky's from our first litter, passed away in at the ripe old age of 19!! We are so thankful for their long lives and good health, which we credit to their diet of mostly steamed or roasted chicken, good breeding practices, and happy home life. We researched many breeds, but kept coming back to the Mini Goldendoodle. That's when we found our Lola, and fell in love with Goldendoodles. They are smart, loving, low to non-shedding, playful and very good with children. Today, my mother and I combine our years of experience of raising and training dogs in our Goldendoodle program. We have a unique understanding of developing healthy packs thanks to our years of breeding the Silkys. If you are considering getting a second dog, we can help you select the right fit for not only you, but for your current pooch. Pack dymanics should always be taken into consideration. Lola is an F1B petite Goldendoodle - to be technical. You can read about our mom's and dad's under the "Parents" tab at the top of this page. Use the link below to view our upcoming litters page. As I type this she just climbed up to sit in my lap and fell immediately to sleep. We only wish she came into our lives sooner! Every day we marvel at how quickly she learns and matures. She is totally my shadow — following me around the apartment from morning to night and jumping with absolute joy when my husband gets home from work at the end of the day. It's hard to have a bad day when Rooster is around. Thanks for everything! She is happy all the time. We love and have raised Golden Retrievers for the past 27 years but wanted a smaller, golden-type dog with less shedding. Winnie is everything we were looking for in a dog - smart, adorable personality, 30 lbs, loving, easily trained and so friendly to people. She gets compliments wherever we go. It was a pleasure working with you Janelle. Thank you for Winnie - she is a wonderful addition to our family. We highly recommend Bella Mini Doodles and already have several times. Justin Chapman Feb From day 1 Penny has been an absolute joy! It ended up being quite the opposite! Kara Gauvin Jan We decided to get 2 mini golden doodles, a brother and sister - Cab and Margaux! Janelle was so helpful in the process, answering our numerous questions right up until pick up day : These 2 puppies have essentially been our "therapy dogs" and have brought so much fun and enjoyment into our lives! Thank you so much! So if you live near Corbettsville New York and are looking for a healthy and beautiful Mini Goldendoodle puppy then checkout our available pups now by Clicking Here. Below are some Mini Goldendoodle Pups that have been adopted!
Standard Poodles! Poodles are goofy, social, fun-loving, intelligent, highly-trainable, and desire human companionship. It is thought that the Poodle originated in Germany as far back as the Middle ages. Taking its name from the German word pudeln, which means "to splash in water". The Poodle was once exceptional at retrieving ducks from the marshes. The versatile Poodle is among the most intelligent and capable of breeds. It is easily trained and remains a popular family pet to this day. Our Poodles are all from Standard lines and are regal and calm, though they love to play. They bark to alert when someone arrives at the house, but are not barkers without purpose. Standard Poodles love to be near their family and are wonderful with other dogs and children. We produce solids, parti-factor or abstract, as well as Parti Standard Poodle Puppies! Our Parti Standard Poodle Puppies range from red and white, apricot and white, brown and white, black and white, and sable parti puppies. Our Poodle Dams and Sires are AKC Registered from excellent bloodlines and have obtained extensive health clearances prior to being bred. All three varieties have the same build and proportions. We do not currently offer miniature or toy puppies. Poodles can be black, red, white, apricot, brown, cream, Cafe Au Lait, silver beige, silver or blue, and may be a combination of these colors. Poodles carry the color patterns brindle, sable, ticking, abstract, tuxedo, parti, and phantom. They require brushing a few times a week, plus clipping and shaping every months. This longer clip though does require more frequent brushing at home to prevent matting of the Poodles curly coat. According to Slate Magazine, Poodles were originally used as foul hunting dogs. An unshorn Poodle's thick coat could weigh it down in the water. With the bottom half of its body shaved, the animal was more buoyant and could swim more freely. The long mane and hair around the chest were left intact to keep the poodle's vital organs warm in the cold water, and owners also kept the hair around the joints to protect them from cold and injury and to help prevent rheumatism. Shaving the hair around the face left the poodle's mouth and eyes free so it could fulfill its retrieving responsibilities, and tying the hair on a poodle's head into a "top knot" also kept hair out of its eyes. Owners eventually tied these knots with brightly colored ribbons to help them identify their dogs from afar. Daily walks are a must if you don't have a safely enclosed area for them to run freely. They love games and many are attracted to water and love to swim. As with any dog, socialization and training should start while the dog is still a puppy and continue throughout its life. Look for a puppy kindergarten class locally or join the AKC S. Puppy Program , training based on positive techniques. Find a class here. This is a great place to start socializing and training. A well-socialized, well-trained Poodle makes a wonderful family companion. Early socialization and training establishes those lifetime bonds between the family and puppy as these programs teach you how to communicate with your new puppy and get started on the right foot. Breeder Sharee Avila offers lively and healthy Moyen, or medium-sized, Poodle puppies as family companions. Each puppy is microchipped and placed on a spay or neuter contract and has a one-year health guarantee. Toy Poodle and Maltese Perfection is an innovative breeder that offers hearty, colorful litters for anyone who prefers smaller breeds. McKenzie socializes her Toy Poodle puppies with children, adults, and other dogs to help them become accustomed to their potential new homes. The puppies also receive up-to-date veterinary evaluations to keep them in top condition. When her puppies are eight weeks old, they are placed on a spay or neuter contract; they have a one-year health guarantee. Asking questions about their experience is a great way to get insight on how to keep your dog happy and healthy. This screening helps them evaluate whether buyers are responsible enough to care for their puppies. Many of them raise their puppies inside of their homes; they feed them nutritious puppy food to help them grow and do not confine them in cramped kennels. Responsible breeders give new Poodle owners up-to-date medical records, including a vaccination and deworming history. They also provide health guarantees for genetic health issues, like vision loss and epilepsy , to ensure that the pup is healthy before going to its new home. Those prices are red flags for unethical commercial breeders or puppy mills. Poodle Puppies in North Carolina Poodles are one of the most popular and versatile dog breeds for families across North Carolina and the rest of the United States. Their playful and friendly nature makes them perfect for homes with kids, while their low-shedding coat makes them ideal for people with allergies. Poodle puppies come in several coat colors. Some breeders offer black Poodles, while others sell apricot and white Parti Poodles, for a unique pattern consisting of white and another color. Poodles require extensive grooming to prevent matting, so you can expect to get them groomed every six weeks. I also recommend brushing them every day to remove any traces of dander in their coat. Many breeders specialize in one or more Poodle sizes: Toy, Miniature, and Standard. The smaller sizes are ideal for apartment life. Regardless of the size you prefer, this high-maintenance breed needs plenty of exercise. Therefore, you should take them on an hour-long walk every day. Conclusion Although searching for trustworthy Poodle breeders in North Carolina can feel intimidating for first-time dog owners, you can find several of them across the state who love caring for their dogs as much as you do. If you are interested in owning a healthy, energetic Poodle, feel free to ask these breeders any questions about their pups and practices to see if they are the right pick for you. Similar Posts. Amazon, amazon. Promising review: "I've used these poop bags for years. We have a pug and have fostered pugs. It's the only brand we use. Pet odor and stain remover for pets to clean up after your pug. This cleaner helps get rid of stains, odors and residue left behind accidents your pet may have around the house. It's safe to use around pets and children. She hasn't 'sneaky tinkled' anywhere since using this product. Pleasant scent as well. Will re-order. A Barkbox two-in-one toy that'll stand up to even the most destructive doggos. After your pup is tired of playing with the outer pineapple, they'll find a smaller one inside of it for even more play time. Amazon Promising review: "This immediately became one of my pug's favorites. He can be a destructive little beast and loves to eviscerate his toys but has hardly made a dent in this one despite his best efforts. Wrinkle paste to keep your pug's wrinkles feeling itch-free and cute as can be. Use this paste for tear stains and tail pockets, too. We have bathed, used medicated wipes and honestly, nothing lasted for more than 12 hours and then the stink was back. I work at a veterinary office so I tried pretty much every appropriate option. I saw this product while browsing and thought the name was cute and then I saw the great reviews and thought maybe we should try it out. This stuff is a miracle! I have applied a small amount daily to her face folds and the stank is gone. She also appreciates that the product is not scented. I am so happy! Glad for Pets carbon training pads that'll absorb moisture from accidents and eliminate odor while you work on house training your smush-faced cutie. Use these in your pug's crate or around the house. Promising review: Great absorption, easy cleanup. For some reason, the dogs tend to use this brand much more reliably than any other puppy pads. I have two pugs and these pads can hold a lot of liquid before leaking. Milk-Bone beef-flavored dog treats made with real bone marrow so good, even the pickiest pugs will enjoy them. Promising review: "Perfect size for my pug, and he loves these little treats! A medicated shampoo to help sooth your pug's itchy skin and get them squeaky clean. This shampoo will help get rid of rashes, greasy skin, or bacterial infections on your dog's skin. His diet had not changed and he had not gotten into anything that would have caused a skin irritation. After our older dog passed away, he started having these itchy spots a few weeks later so it may be stressed related, if that's even possible! He seemed to be miserable so I found this and decided to try it instead of spending a bunch of money at the vet's office. After two washes, his itchy spots were gone. It's now four months later and the itchy spots have not returned. I'm so glad I tried this product before going to the vet. It's great and it really works. Greenies treats for when your pug's breath needs to be freshened up. Just give them a Greenie to chew on and they'll have fresh breath and clean teeth by the time they finish it. My new puppy did not care for them at first, but has since come around and followed in her sister's footsteps and runs into her crate to get one. A super quiet professional nail grinder to use when it starts sounding like your pug is tap dancing on the floor with their long nails. This one has two speeds and three ports so it'll work on any size dog. The stay at home order had me faced with trimming nails by myself. I decided to try a grinder. The research led me to this one. Not too loud. Easy to handle and clean. Strong enough motor. I started out slow and would just do no longer than five seconds of pressure on the grinder at a time. The grinding also leaves the nail smoother than a clip. Saving money and now that the nail is the correct length I just need to maintain the nail. A really great purchase. A life jacket for when your pug decides to go for a dip. It's waterproof and has a neck float to make sure your furry friend keeps their head above water when swimming. The chin rest is the best part- neither of them had been swimming before and neither of them had too much trouble. The handles on the back make it very easy to put them into and out of the water as well as guide them as they swim. An adjustable gate to keep your pug from going where they shouldn't. Just use this gate to block off the areas of your home where you don't them to venture! Promising review: "I bought three of these gates and they are perfect for keeping my pug on the balcony, out of the kitchen, and out of my mom's room. It is very sturdy, easy to install, and easy to open. I wish the door went both ways and had a larger opening but the low price makes up for the small inconvenience. I definitely recommend for pets. A maximum strength joint supplement in chewable tablet form, because it'll help your pug get their groove back. Promising review: "I've had my 8-year-old pug on this brand for about five months now, what with her beginning to show a few warning signs for arthritis setting in, and I can absolutely say she's done terrific with them. She's nimble, capable of leaping up and down places I'd prefer she NOT sometimes she gets so excited, she forgets to use her stairs , and has always loved the flavor. And to date, she's certainly suffered no ill side effects. Blue Buffalo dog food that'll give your dog all the proteins and carbs it's a chicken and brown rice recipe! Promising review: "I decided to do a taste test with my dog. I put a little bit of her Iams dog food on one plate and then on another plate I put Blue Buffalo food, which she had never tried before She sat about 3 feet away waiting for my signal. She proceeded to eat the Blue Buffalo dog food first. This indicates a clear preference for Blue Buffalo. So we are now switching to a better quality premium dog food. It costs more, but our dog is family. Greenies Pill Pockets for when you need to trick your pug into taking their medication. Simply pop a pill into the pocket, squeeze it to seal, and that's it! My pug has figured out how to remove pills from peanut butter, bacon, yogurt, wet dog food, and other treats. Bathrooms - can be a very dangerous place for a Pug puppy. In order to avoid your puppy from going into the bathroom unsupervised you would have to make sure to close your bathroom door every single time. A trick that would be helpful is hanging a sign on your door, wall or above the sink reminding you to close the door when you leave the bathroom. Fireplaces - does your home have a fireplace? Make sure you block it off from your Pug pup. Grooming supplies - dog shampoo should be carefully picked for a Pug pup as they often have sensitive skin. Nail clipper and facial anti bacterial wipes for your Pugs' folds and tear stains. Puppy pee pads - if you are planning on house training with dog wee pads you should consider having them ahead of time prior to the puppy coming home. You should find a vet - preferably one that is knowledgeable in the Pug breed and you are comfortable with that lives close by. Pug puppies are known for chewing everything around the house, whatever they find they will chew or try to eat it. If puppy proofing your entire house seems like an insurmountable task, create a dog space. You dedicate an area of your house solely for your Pug, preferably one that you and or your family frequent. You can secure this area by using the puppy fence. This not only keeps your puppy in a safe and protected area, it also helps to not overwhelm them. You should go through your home and look for anything that could be hazardous to your new Pug puppy. Electrical cords, choking risks, shoes or anything of the sort should be cleared out. You also have to be conscious of any dangling cords that your Pug could chew, trip over or worse. As soon as you put all of these in place, you are all set and ready to bring the newest family member home. Bringing home your Pug puppy The most efficient way to raise a well-adjusted, well-mannered Pug is to expose them to everyday scenarios and experiences as soon as possible. The first experience your puppy will have is the car ride home. You should make sure the breeder will not feed your puppy right before the car ride home to avoid stomach upset or vomiting. As mentioned above having your Pug puppy secured in a car seat will be the safest option. This is because consistency goes a long way in training a well-behaved all rounded Pug dog. Now that you have gotten home, resist the urge to spoil and over indulge your Pug. You should start training your puppy early and refrain from excessive scolding, use positive reinforcements, and lots of praises. Potty training your Pug puppy takes patience the easiest way is to take your puppy outside every half hour or so and encourage them to go. Bringing them to the same area will help them quickly understand that this is their pee area. Always give them a treat as soon as they pee outside. Continue to do this, and then gradually drop the treats and use only praise. If you are training your Pug to go indoors on pee pads, just do the same as mentioned above. How long do Pug puppies sleep at night? Pug puppies can sleep anywhere from 12 to 18 hours per day, only waking up occasionally for an hour or so every few hours of rest. It is best to develop a nighttime routine. If you wake up your puppy to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, you will develop this habit with your puppy. In adulthood your Pug might wake you up in the middle of the night and you want to avoid developing this habit if possible. It is best to establish a night time house training routine. Take your Pug puppy to the bathroom right before bedtime and immediately upon waking up. Puppy proof the outside of your home and garage Antifreeze taste sweet to your dog however can be lethal. Remove any rat poison or traps around your home. Fence off areas where there could be toxic plants such as wild mushrooms or any water sources like pools. Pugs are not good swimmers and most will sink. Make sure your backyard is safe and secure without any way for your Pug to get out of the fenced area. If needed fix loose fencing or holes prior to your Pug's arrival. Always watch your Pug puppy when going outside since puppies get bored easily. Once they are bored they will get destructive and exhibit bad behaviors such as digging holes throughout your backyard or chew patio furniture etc. Always keep your trash secure, and away from your Pug. Pugs are prone to obesity, watch their weight, give them lots of exercise. Regular check ups with the vet will help them stay healthy. Keep them under supervision at all times, and spend time with them especially in those first few weeks. Leashes There are two types of leashes to have: 1 - Short, soft-handled leash. This is perfect for when you are housebreaking your Pug, as a method to tether your pup to you. The short 4 or 6 foot length keeps your Pug very close, and the soft handle allows you to slip this over your wrist or slip in through your belt loop. For every day use. With this, you are able to adjust the length depending on what the situation. For walks, keep it short. When taking your Pug out to the bathroom, allow more length. Recommended leashes are below. Please note that if you are using a blocker, images may not show. And if you are on a mobile phone, you may need to turn your screen horizontal to see all 4 items in the grouping. A collar puts pressure on the neck; a harness displaces pressure across the stronger chest, shoulders, and back. You may wish to have a collar for ID purposes; if so, be sure it is a break-away collar. Read more about why a harness is best for a Pug or look below for recommended harnesses and a break-away collar. Beds One of the biggest reasons to get your Pug his own bed is to help create the right set up for when your puppy or dog is home alone. Separation anxiety is a very common issue with this breed since there is such a tight bond between Pug and human. A big part of helping a Pug deal with isolation is to offer what will be perceived as a safe den. Dogs that are left to roam full rooms or the entire house often struggle more with loneliness. When a Pug is in a canine playpen see also: Playpens and within that has his own bed, this offers a secure feeling of having a den, which is an innate, basic canine instinct that automatically makes a dog feel safer. In addition, there are other important benefits including proper support ;this is vital for this breed since the Pug is prone to hip and back issues. You'll want beds to be made with quality memory foam. The right bed can also help with breathing problems, as it allows a Pug to position his body and head to keep breathing passages open. Body Care Items General Upkeep There are certain grooming tasks that need to be done regularly on your Pug; if not, all sorts of issues can occur: Wipe the wrinkles - Pugs easily develop yeast infections in their wrinkles if they are not cleaned on a regular basis. We recommend wiping the wrinkles every day with a hypo-allergenic grooming wipe. Paw wax - Apply a paw wax once a week. This will help protect against hot walking surfaces in the summer, slippery frozen surfaces in the winter as well as prevent 'snowballing' which is when snow freezes between a dog's toes, and to keep the paws in good shape. Nose balm - A Pug's nose can get chapped in the winter, or suffer from sun exposure in the summer. A nose balm or butter can protect the nose, and also heal drying, peeling, chapping, or cracking. Body wipes - Grooming wipes for the body allows you a quick way to keep your Pug clean in between baths. If your Pug has allergies to pollen or airborne allergens, wipe your Pug each time he comes back inside. If your Pug tends to have urine splatter up, or tiny bits of feces that stick to the rear end, a canine tushie wipe can help quickly clean that area. Below are our recommended body care items. Medicated Body Care Products There may be times when your Pug has an issue that an over-the-counter medicated product can help with. It is always a good idea to check with the veterinarian if you are not sure of the diagnosis. Wrinkle infections - A wipe with chlorhexidine and ketoconazole can help cure both bacterial and yeast infections. Added aloe helps soothe sensitive skin. Ear infections - For Pugs that are prone to ear infections, the ears should be cleaned monthly, though a vet may recommend weekly. And to help cure ear infections, a liquid or powder ear cleanser can often remedy the issue. If the ears are super-itchy, a solution with hydrocortisone can bring relief. Below are our recommended wrinkle infection wipes, and ear cleansing solutions. Bowls Out of all of the supplies that you obtain for your Pug puppy or dog, you might think that choosing the bowl is one of the easiest tasks. However, not putting thought into this can bring about a host of issues. The wrong bowl can cause a Pug to have trouble eating, show the effects of contact reaction most often manifesting as discoloration to the nose , and even lead to dangerous bloat caused by eating or drinking too fast. The best bowls for a Pug are floor level, stainless steel, slow-feeder dishes, or alternatively, a floor level, stainless steel bowl with an added portion pacer ball. Read more about bowls for Pugs or look below for our top recommendations. Brushes Because Pugs have such thick coats, it's very important to use the right brushes that will reach down through all that fur. There are 3 times you'll be using a different sort of brush: 1 - For baths. The goal during baths is to remove debris, but also to remove accumulated body oils from the skin. Often, a bath brush is needed to reach through the fur to do this. If not, you'll just be skimming the surface of your puppy or dog. The goal with this high-shedding breed is to brush often, reach down to the skin to pull up dead hairs from way down deep, and with a brush hairs will cling to to pull them out of the coat. A grooming mitt is a great choice, since its super easy to use and most Pugs like how it feels. When your Pug is shedding like mad, it'll be time to get serious. For this, a de-shedding tool that is gentle yet completely wipes the coat of loose and dead hairs can save you and your home from becoming a shedding mess. Recommended bathing brushes, mitt, and de-shedding tools are below. Car Seat There are 2 extremely good reasons to have your Pug ride in a car seat, or use a canine safety belt: 1- To save your dog's life. And this is no exaggeration. There are over 16, car accidents every single day in the U. Most regular drivers will be involved in 3 accidents in their lifetime. If an accident occurs and a dog is not restrained, he will be thrown, it's just a matter of with how much force. In an accident at 35 MPH, a Pug that weighs 10 lbs. If the car is going 55 MPH, and a Pug weighs 20 lbs. Most likely. But, when a dog can see out of the windows and his body is secure and not swaying with every turn, acceleration, or deceleration, motion sickness is often prevented. The 1 recommended type of seat is a raised booster seat. A canine safety belt is another option, and while this will help keep a Pug in place to stop swaying, he won't be raised any higher. Note: For either type, the inner harness of the seat or the connector of the safety belt must be connected to a dog's harness , not a collar. This is vital to prevent serious neck injury. Read more about the importance of a car seat for a Pug or see below for recommendations. Cleaning Supplies There are a few things that fall under the category of cleaning supplies that you'll want to consider having: 1. Enzyme cleanser for pee or poo. Urine contains enzymes that will not be removed with regular soap and water. Though humans cannot pick up on these enzyme odors, dogs can. So, if a Pug pees in the house, and it is not cleaned in the right way, enzymes will be sending out a very strong signal that essentially says 'This is the bathroom area! And, not suprisingly, a dog will pee there again. So, an important step in cleaning any accidents, and to help stop territorial marking, is to use the right cleaner. In addition, this sort of product is fantastic with swiping away lingering odors of both urine and bowel movements. Even if you regularly brush your Pug, some hairs are bound to end up on your flooring, your furniture, and especially on your Pug's bed. Hairs get trapped in the weaves of fabric and can be hard to pull up. Poo bags. Most likely, you walk your Pug in an area that expects owners to clean up after their dogs. And if not, doing so is just plain good manners. One method of keeping poo bags with you is to use a nifty holder that clips to the leash. This way, there's nothing extra to carry. Our recommended enzyme cleaners, fur remover tools, and poo bag clip are below. Of course, a dog's fur helps keep him warm, but canines are not invincible; they get chilled just like we do. In fact, intolerance to the cold is one of the top reasons dogs are not exercised enough in the winter. Super-cold days can also interfere with a Pug being cooperative in going outside for bathroom needs. When a dog's core body back, flanks, belly is warm, this can help regulate all-over body temperature. For this reason, a vest or coat during harsh weather conditions can really help. For times that your Pug just needs a little something, a shirt or hoodie is the way to go. Read more about how clothing can help a Pug stay comfortable, or look below for recommendations for clothing that fits Pug puppies and dogs. Dental Care Items Why dental supplies? Far too many dogs suffer the terrible consequences of what happens if oral hygiene is ignored by owners. Yet, when you have just a few of the right items, it takes very little time to take care of this. What can happen: All around the clock, plaque is being produced. It is a very sticky substance that clings to teeth. Within just 3 days it starts to harden into tartar. At that point, it is much more difficult to remove. The plaque and tartar eats away at the enamel of the teeth, clawing its way below the gum line, and causing teeth to rot. This can lead to quite painful dental infections and will eventually cause a dog's teeth to loosen and then fall out. What to do: Chewing on toys helps to some degree; however, this by no means removes all of the plaque. You will want your Pug's vet to perform a yearly dental exam to check for any issues and to do a professional cleaning, if needed. At home, you can do your part by: Brushing your Pug's teeth once per day with a quality toothbrush and an effective paste. Since dogs swallow the paste, be sure to never use human products, and instead opt for a canine brand that has a flavor dogs love like chicken or vanilla. Please note that these do not have a foaming agent since it can cause dogs to choke. Use a spray. For dogs that strongly resist having their teeth brushed, another alternative is to use an effective dental spray. Use a water additive. This does NOT take the place of brushing or using a spray, but is a complementary method to help prevent issues. This is a flavorless supplement that is added to a dog's water and helps kill bacteria both in the bowl and in the mouth. Offer a daily dental treat. These are really fantastic tools to help your Pug's teeth stay clean and strong. Be sure to choose the variety that is right for your particular Pug. The 'Teenies' are for dogs 5 to 15 pounds. The 'Petites' are for dogs 15 to 25 pounds. Below are our recommended dental care items. Flea, Tick, and Mosquito Repellent It is very common for owners to be unsure of what is needed in this regard, or to be unaware of the consequences of not offering protection. These vary quite a bit. For example, Heartguard Plus does not do either of these. However, Revolution works to repel both fleas and American Dog Ticks. So, you will want to check the packaging on the heartworm meds that you are using on your Pug to see what it works for. Fleas are a top concern and even dogs living in very clean homes can easily catch these. Fleas can jump several feet from one dog to another, and also can be found living outside in various places that a dog may be walking through. Just one bite can cause a severe reaction with intense itching. And a full-out flea infestation can really take a toll on a dog. Also, if a dog has fleas, they are in the house as well; they like to burrow deep into carpeting, beds, and furniture. Ticks are a concern in just about every state in the U. While many go dormant in the winter, all it takes is a day or so without any snow, and they can wake up. Mosquitoes are another often overlooked concern. In the summer, dogs can get quite swarmed, and a few bites can cause irritating itching. It's best to steer clear of chemicals when you can. Many dogs have adverse reactions to pesticides and some even have fatal reactions. If your area does not have a severe tick threat, you may find that an all-natural product works very well. Food and Snacks The food that you choose to give to your Pug for both meals and snacks will have a huge effect on your dog; both short term and long term. You'll want to choose all natural, wholesome foods that do NOT contain artificial flavoring, coloring dyes, or synthetic preservatives. While these sorts of things are bad for all dogs, the Pug breed in particular is sensitive to these chemicals. You'll also want to avoid high grain content, corn, and soy, since dogs can be allergic to these. Wheat - but very rarely rice, also is a top concern. Steer clear of by-products and generic meats or oils. When you feed your Pug the right food, he'll look healthy and feel healthy; this has a major effect on how he'll feel each day and his health well into the future. Read more about Pug feeding guidelines that includes timing, common issues, and more, or check out the details regarding which snacks are best for a Pug , or look below for our top 2 recommended kibbles and top 2 treats. Note that the Wellness has two recipes, for puppies and for adults. Once your Pug reaches 1 year old, make the switch to adult food. For treats, choose dry treats for snacks given in between meals, and moist treats for giving rewards. Also please note that if you are using a blocker, images may not show. Fur Loss Help When there is a thinning coat or bald patches, it is vital to have this diagnosed by the veterinarian. Causes can range from severe allergies to mites to hormonal imbalance. Only once the underlying cause has been determined and treated, it may be time to move forward in helping a Pug's coat to grow back in. So, again, these remedies should not be used on a Pug that has not yet been diagnosed. Some of the reasons for hair loss with dogs are quite serious and must be addressed. This all said, there are a few things that can help a Pug grow his coat, if the dog is in good health. For best results, we recommend using all 4 remedies. Lotions - Certain lotions work on two fronts at the same time. The act of massaging lotion into balding areas stimulates blood flow and hair follicles; this alone can prompt some growth. Concurrently, the ingredients in the lotion can work to improve both skin and coat health. We recommend DerMagic rescue lotion see below ; this should be massaged onto the areas 2 times per day for 1 week, then 1 time per day for all following weeks. When used in conjunction with other products such as specialty shampoos see next , fur may fully grow back within 2 to 3 months. Specialty shampoo - A shampoo rich with emollients such as tea tree oil can help boost the benefits of the lotion. DerMagic offers such a shampoo. This can be used every 2 weeks or so; once your Pug is lathered up, leave this on for 10 minutes. Be sure to pat, not rub, when you dry your dog. Melatonin - You will want to consult with the veterinarian before giving this to your Pug, since it can cause some drowsiness, can interfere with some other medications, and should not be given to dogs with certain health conditions including canine diabetes. This OTC medication that is actually a naturally occurring hormone in both people and canines has shown some promising results in treating alopecia in dogs. It can take 2 to 3 months to see results, which is the same time frame as the lotion. Dosing is typically 1 mg per day for dogs under 10 lbs. Omega 3 fatty acid - This essential oil cannot be produced by the body, so dogs must recieve it via their diet. While high-quality dog food will contain omega 3, extra supplementation can help improve skin health and boost fur growth. We recommend a liquid omega 3 fish oil that is derived from wild fish, not farmed fish. Our recommended products to help a Pug's fur grow back in are below. Playpens If there was just one supply item that drastically changed pet ownership, it would be a playpen. It's amazing just how beneficial these are. A majority of problems that owners face can be solved with the right enclosure. And do keep in mind that we are talking about a larger large area in which a Pug has plenty of room to play, sleep, eat, and feel comfortable as opposed to a crate which can be terribly confining. An indoor portable dog pen can help with: Destructive chewing. Toothbrush and dental chews 1. Pug Eggs Although other dog owners may never have heard of this term, but most pug owners are familiar with pug eggs. A pug egg is a plush squeaky egg toy that pugs love to play with. For some reason, pugs love them! Get your pug some pug eggs here. The Fluff Trough The Fluff Trough is a an elevated dog feeder that was especially designed for flat faced breeds. This helps promote better digestion, as well as a more comfortable eating experience. Get your Fluff Trough here. A dog bed — with chin rest! Pugs are experts when it comes to relaxation and sleeping. For some reason, chin rests are very important to pugs. Your hand, an arm rest, a pillow, a coffee table, pretty much any elevated surface will do. Nose Butter Flat faced dogs, like pugs, have sensitive noses. They are far more susceptible to dry noses than dogs with longer snouts. Their coat is very tightly-packed — it holds roughly hairs per square inch! Compare that to a Yorkshire Terrier, who has only to hairs per square inch. Some pugs even have double coats, both an undercoat and topcoat of fur, meaning they shed even more. They make removing fur from clothing, couches and cars a breeze. Get yours here. Pulling a dog on a collar can cause neck injuries, or worse; it can raise the amount of pressure in the eyes, or damage the thyroid gland. Since pugs have sensitive eyes and breathing issues to begin with, this is especially important to avoid. Harnesses provide more control over your pug, discourage pulling and jumping, and are especially great for dogs with respiratory issues and neck injuries, like pugs. Get your pug a great harness that is comfortable, durable and safe. We made a list of the best harnesses for pugs here. Cooling Mat Never had I ever heard of a cooling mat before I got a pug. A cooling mat is a mat with a cool gel interior that is activated when touched. It gets — you guessed it — cool when you apply pressure, and relaxes and soothes your pet. My pug uses his cooling mat in the summer months, and I put it in his travel carrier when we fly or go on a road trip. Get your own cooling mat here. Cooling Vest A cooling vest, like a cooling mat, is great way to keep your pug comfortable during the summer months, and is especially great for a pug on the go. My pug wears his cooling vest on walks, hikes and especially hot days. Cooling vests use shading and evaporative cooling technology to keep your pug from overheating. All you have to do is soak the vest in water, wring it out, and zip it on to your pug. We recommend this Ruffwear Jet Stream Vest. That way you can scrub them clean, and not have to worry about rashes, itching or bumps later. A pet ramp Older pugs can develop issues with mobility or weakened back legs. This ramp is adjustable to many different heights, making it compatible with most of the furniture in your house. The material is thin, so Boogie can feel the ground and feels secure. Boogie is a size small the red ones. Salmon Oil Your pug should have a healthy diet that includes important nutrients like omega fatty acids. Zesty Paws and Grizzly both sell wild caught salmon oil that come in easy to use bottles with hand pumps. No hide rawhide Rawhides give your dog hours of chewing pleasure and entertainment, but they also pose a huge risk. This can cause your dog to choke, or create a blockage. Earth Animal no-hide rawhides are a healthy alternative. Plus, they help maintain healthy teeth and gums, while being nutritious. Your dog will stay busy for hours, but with no added risks. ID Tag While a naked pug is cute, a safe pug is even cuter. Better safe than sorry! We like these simple tags that look good and last forever. Wrinkle paste If you own a pug, then you know that all of those wrinkles and folds can get pretty funky. Boogie used to get frequent yeast infections in his folds before we changed his diet and started using wrinkle paste. The wrinkle paste cleans and protects wrinkles by forming a water repellent barrier that helps keep moisture, fungus and bacteria at bay. We like the Squishface brand , which also sells wrinkle wipes and tear stain paste. Ear cleaning solution Besides wrinkle and fold maintenance, pugs need their ears cleaned regularly too. Have I mentioned that pugs are sensitive? Boogie was plagued with frequent ear infections when we adopted him, and this solution seemed to do the trick. Regular cleanings when we noticed him itching or rubbing his ear helped stop the awful cycle, and saved him a trip to the vet. Avoid this stuffed animal massacre scene and get your pug no-stuffing dog toys. We buy these. Kong Enrichment toys are a great way to keep your pug busy, their mind sharp and their life enjoyable. Our favorites are Kong toys. You can fill them with tasty treats, use them to mentally and physically stimulate your pup, and even bust one out during a training session. Learn about how to stuff your Kong and get over Kong filler ideas. You can get your very own Kong here. The good news is, weekly brushings will help remove loose hair and keep the indoor shedding to a minimum. You can read more about how to deal with a shedding pug here. If you live in colder climates, or are traveling to one, make sure your pug stays snug with a sweater or jacket. I especially like to use them on winter walks. These sweaters are stylish and warm, and they fit round pugs! Check the sizing before ordering. Toothbrush and dental chews Ooph. The dreaded dental. Pugs, like other brachycephalic breeds, have breathing issues. Their flat faces make things like going under anesthesia risky, especially if your pug is overweight or older. Prevent the need for dentals with good oral care. What items are a must for the pug in your household? Share with us in the comments! Pin for later! The last thing you want is for it to malfunction near a busy street. And to do that, a lot of trainers recommend a shorter leash to keep your pug behind you. But good ones are pretty pricey, there are two other options: Pug Harness — We know that pugs are one of few brachycephalic breeds ie. There are many advocates of harnesses within the pug community. However, one drawback is that it can teach your pug to pull on the leash, and for that reason many trainers recommend using a standard collar… Collar — Just because I want Benji to look like a little badass, he has this spiky collar. Young pugs should be outfitted with small-size collars, although they will quickly grow out of it over time. Crate Most pug owners opt to purchase a dog crate with a divider. As your pup grows, then you can remove the divider. For more details, checkout our guide on How to Fly with a Pug. So my advice? Start with a small bed with a removable cover. A dog waterproof seat cover will also save you in repair or cleaning costs. I have an SUV, and when it comes to long road trips, I have Benji in the cargo area, where I have a weather resistant and washable removable mat. With that being said, for your pug puppy, I recommend a low calorie snack, with supplements to support your puppies development. Benji would actually vomit every now and then when he was younger — and I just chalked it up as normal. If you feel like you want to make some changes, just make sure to choose a food meant for small breed puppies. A lot of this is attributed to nutrition. But truth be told, I messed up with Benji as a pup, now he hates getting his nails cut. Dogs have blood vessels called a kwik that grow within the nail and if you cut to short, your dogs gonna hate ya. Just be consistent with nail trimmings, this prevents the kwik from growing too much. Just make sure to get a nail cutter that has a stopper that can help stop you but not completely prevent you from hitting the kwik. I like this one on Amazon. But some pug owners swear by it. Puppy shampoo Since Benji has allergies , I use a few speciality formulations for him. I like this one with the scrubber built-in. I would highly advise in getting a carpet cleaning washing machine. I had to clean the carpet multiple times to get the water even looking remotely translucent.
golden retriever puppies for sale in san diego - Puppy pads Create a Schedule German Shepherd pups would do well with a schedule. Dogs live with a routine, and they are easy to train by having one. For this reason, make a schedule of the things you need to do regularly. Eventually, your pup will learn the routine events and will make itself adept at them. It will help you prepare for your pet, especially in the first few days of living together. As you allow your pet to adjust, do your best to create a stress-free environment for it. Always supervise it as it familiarizes itself with its new home. Still, it would be best to prepare yourself for loud noises when your pet is asleep. Moderate Training German Shepherds are highly trainable. It simply means they respond well, especially to positive reinforcement. Squeaky Toys Out of all toys, your pet will love the squeaky ones. For this reason, prepare for a lot of loud squeaks every time your pet is active. Thus, in picking your pet, you may want to consider getting it from the best. Tells you any health problems A good breeder will tell you any significant health problems in any of the dogs he or she bred. Asks more questions than you A good breeder would ask for more items from you than you would for him or her. Not in a hurry to send off A good breeder is not in a hurry to send the puppies off and get your money. He or she will even show you other breeders and veterinarians caring for their dogs. Requires expectations on both sides A good breeder will create a contract that offers not only what he or she expects from you. More than that, he or she will also show what you can expect from him or her. Sends puppies properly A good breeder will never send a puppy in a compartment and without any responsible person to go with it. Works only with one or two breeds A good breeder works only with a single or a couple of species. Shows breeding experience A good breeder shows her dogs in recognized confirmation shows. He or she will also join his or her breed in other breed-related performance events. Other states. There is so much more to raising puppies than people realize. And so much scientific research has been done on this subject that can really give a pup a good head start in life if a breeder has a desire to learn it and then apply it. Jane Killion said, "Much of what people consider problematic in their adult dogs, from aggression right down to lack of focus in a working dog, often comes down to a failure or omission in the first 12 weeks of a dog's life. And the breeder is responsible for over half of that 12 weeks. During the fourth week of life, we introduce a new toy or visual object to the pups each day. Scientific studies have shown that animals raised in a stimulus rich environment, with lots of toys, exercise and challenges have larger brains, with more neural connections than animals raised in a stimulus poor environment. Their health is paramount to us. The whelping box we use is made by Dura-Whelp, it's made of non-porous material making it easy to sanitize, and we purchase non-slip whelping pads to keep the pups from slipping and sliding around. Make sure you're ready for the task. And it is wise to ask to visit the breeder prior to making a deposit if possible. Zena pup's mother is the most intelligent dog I've ever owned. And Zena is more intelligent, easier to train, had much more drive, did much better in her protection work, and figure out the barrier test much, much, faster than Xandor. Can you describe a puppy mill? Despite all of the applications to join our network that are denied, we have compiled an expansive network of experienced, ethical breeders who are sure to have your ideal puppy. How does the Uptown Puppies process go? Check our listings of available litters for sale from reputable breeders to find the perfect puppy of your dreams. Why should I trust Uptown Puppies? golden retriever puppies for sale in san diego - Life Span Did You Know? Black Labrador Retrievers, or just Black Labs, are a common coat color variation of one of the most popular dog breeds. The Black Labrador Retriever is not necessarily a separate dog breed. Black Labs are still Labrador Retrievers; they just have a distinct coat color that is a specifically-bred characteristic. Like other Labrador Retrievers, Black Labs are energetic, playful, and affectionate dogs that make great family companions. Although they are active and energetic dogs, Labs are also known for their gentleness and patience with other family members. Well-socialized Black Labs tend to get along well with just about everyone including children, other dogs, pets, and even strangers. They are considered one of the kid-friendly dog breeds. As one of the most affectionate dog breeds , Black Labs thrive on attention, especially from their favorite humans. They are happiest when they are spending time with their families and receiving affection and attention from them. Despite their high energy, Labs are highly adaptable dogs. They do tend to be better suited to homes with fenced yards where they can run, but they also adapt well to apartments provided they get enough daily exercise, attention, and mental stimulation. They do well in just about any climate, but are sensitive to heat and extreme cold like many dog breeds. As such, they do not like to spend long periods of time alone. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a Black Labrador Retriever can include elbow dysplasia , hip dysplasia, heart disease, hereditary myopathy, cataracts, and progressive retinal atrophy. Another potential health concern is EIC exercise-induced collapse , which can occur in young adult Labs and has a genetic link. Because carriers can be identified by DNA tests, it is recommended that breeders test for them. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies and reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you talk to the breeder about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a large, deep-chested dog breed, Labrador Retrievers are at a higher risk for bloat. Labrador Retrievers are one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners. Although their high energy and puppylike exuberance can sometimes be a challenge, they are intelligent dogs that are eager to please. As long as training is kept consistent and focused on positive rewards and praise, novice owners still tend to do well with Black Labs. Puppy training classes are always an option and offer plenty of benefits aside from training too. Black Labs have a short, water-resistant double coat that sheds year-round and sheds heavier as seasons change. Depending on how active your Black Lab is and what they get into, they may need a bath more often, especially if they are swimming a lot. Weekly ear checks and careful cleanings when needed help prevent ear infections. Good dental care for dogs , like daily brushing and cleanings at the vet when needed, can help prevent painful dental diseases later in life. As one of the most active dog breeds , a Black Labrador Retriever will need a lot of daily activity to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus some playtime and time to run are a minimum. Your Black Lab will likely be up for more activity if you are. One of the facts about Labrador Retrievers is that they have an extended puppyhood. They tend to maintain a puppylike exuberance until they are years old. Although they do tend to mellow out as they get older, they are still active, energetic, and playful dogs. Once they are fully grown, you can try other things like hiking, running, dock diving, and more to find other activities you and your Black Lab can enjoy together. Fully-grown Black Labrador Retrievers usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Black Labs generally live for years on average. Black Labrador Retrievers came before the also-popular Chocolate Lab.
