Why do you think the police force and military are using the German Shepherd so much? Sure, a Doberman can do the job just fine and there are definitely dog breeds that have stronger olfactory senses or stronger bites but they may not be willing to obey every command in every situation. They are too intelligent to outright obey everything which can sometimes be perceived as stubborn. Does that mean the German Shepherd is not smart? Absolutely not. In fact, the German Shepherd is often cited as one of the smartest dog breeds, right after their cousin the Belgian Shepherd, also known as Malinois. Their will to please outranks. How trainable is the German Shepherd Husky mix? Well, the Husky is known to be quite independent by design. So even though pairing these two very smart dog breeds makes sense at first glance, a Shepherd Husky mix might not be as easy to train as imagined. That being said, pairing a German Shepherd with a more agreeable Husky can certainly help. Genetics and temperament of the parents always play a pretty big role. This is not always the case and even a purebred may struggle with protection without proper direction and training. Always consult a professional to avoid teaching your dog negative behavior patterns barking at strangers on walks, lunging at dogs, and so on. Huskies are incredibly enduring. How could they not, they were bred to run hundreds of miles in very cold climates. But their original working purpose was quite specific and they may need to have an outlet for this desire to run. Training your dog early on will prevent behavioral issues in the future and gets your dog used to brain training. Since both breeds are relatively high energy, you need to walk your Shepsky at least twice a day for a minimum of minutes each. The German Shepherd is known to be a formidable family dog while the Husky can be quite reserved. Huskies are used to living and working in a pack and can be very sociable animals while Shepherds develop a deep bond with their owners. Although pairing these two breeds can produce great family dogs, there are other large dog breeds that are even suitable for apartment living out there that are very patient with children and also perfect for guarding property. Expect to have a very smart dog that will challenge you throughout the day. He will probably grow into a medium to large-sized dog with a weight of about 40 to 80 pounds. Both dogs are working breeds so you can expect a Shepsky to have high exercise needs. A task or daily job would keep them the happiest. Grooming Both dog breeds can have relatively similar coat types. Huskies have a thick double coat, meaning an undercoat plus guard hair. While the undercoat is soft and dense, the guard hairs are straight and somewhat smooth. Depending on the specific pairing, the coat can be a toin coss. Be ready for shedding seasons with both of these dogs. You can expect your male German Shepherd Husky mix to be in cm with a weight of lbs kg. Female German Shepherd Husky mixes range from in cm , weighing in at lbs kg. Apartment Living Can you live in an apartment with a high-energy dog like the German Shepherd Husky mix? It depends. If you provide your dog with an outlet for his exercise needs which means lots of walks, play, and training then there should be absolutely no problem. However, their tendency for high-pitched barks or howling may cause problems with your neighbors. Proper training will help and entails teaching your dog the quiet command. Would I advise you to buy a mixed breed from a breeder? Definitely not. There are far too many mixed breeds sitting in shelters and waiting to be chosen. What factors determine the price of a German Shepherd Husky mix? To determine the cost of buying a German Shepherd Husky mix, you should consider age, breeder reputation, documentation, health record, litter size, and location. Although a cheaper dog may be tempting, you may pay more in the end if the breeder has not taken good care of the dog. Age Shepskies are ready to leave their mother and littermates at about 8 weeks old. The youngest ones will be the most expensive because this is the most desirable age. As the puppy gets older, the price may become a bit cheaper. Breeders tend to have several litters of puppies staggered over time. If they have a puppy who is a few months old from a previous litter they often lower the cost of that puppy when a new litter is born. You can also rescue older Shepskies. Adult Shepskies are usually vaccinated and cost less than a puppy. They may or may not be well-trained, depending on the previous owner. Breeder reputation You will pay more for a well-known breeder. The better the breeder, the more demand there is for their dogs. So, this will cost more. Also, if the parent dogs are well-known, their puppies will also cost more. You should always check to see what kind of reputation a breeder has. Some breeders keep their puppies in poor living conditions. Look at reviews online or ask others who have completed business with them. Documentations German Shepherd Husky mixes are a fairly new designer-breed that were first bred in the s. However, it is important to get offspring from pedigreed parents. Ideally, you want a first-generation dog with one full-blood German Shepherd parent and one Siberian Husky parent. When purchasing a Shepky, ask to see the parents and their documented pedigree to assure you are getting a first-generation German Shepherd Husky mix. Second and third generations may lose much of their designer look. They can also be less healthy because of selective breeding. Health record A dewormed and vaccinated puppy will cost more than one that is not, but this cost is worth it in the end. If you get your puppy without these medical checks, you will have to get them on your own. The vet bills will end up costing you about as much, if not more than the additional adoption cost. If you adopt Shepsky puppies from a shelter, they often go ahead and neuter them, which will be factored into the cost. Also, reputable breeders screen their parent dogs and their puppies for health defects, which ensures you have a healthier dog. These costs get transferred to the buyer, but they are worth every cent. Location Some places have a higher cost of living, and as such, the cost of a Shepsky will be higher in those places. Also, if you travel a long distance to get your dog, you may have to factor in those costs. In general, both the German Shepherd and the Husky are pretty popular breeds, so their offspring are usually readily available in most locations. You can check local breeders and online pet-finding sites to find Shepskies near you. Litter size Larger litter sizes are usually more difficult for the breeder to sell. So, if you can find a breeder who has a large litter size, they may give you a deal. You can also sometimes negotiate with a breeder to adopt two puppies for a slightly cheaper price than getting each one individually. This can help you save on the overall cost of the adoption, and it will give your puppy a companion. Coat color Shepsky puppies come in a variety of color patterns, but generally, they have a combination of two colors. These can be black, white, cream, brown, red, or blue. Most people prefer German Shepherd Huskies which have a combination of white and another color, which may drive up the cost of that particular coat color. Gender Female dogs usually cost more than males, whether you are getting a puppy or an adult. Females cost more because they are able to provide many litters of puppies throughout their lifetime. Since they can get pregnant, they will have more medical costs throughout their lives. Even the process of spaying a female is more costly and invasive, adding to the cost of the female. Males will be slightly cheaper. How much should you expect to pay for a German Shepherd Husky mix? However, prices will vary according to how popular Shepskies are in your area. Papers refer to the proof that the parents were registered as purebred dogs. This ensures you are getting what you are paying for. However, this is not an ideal place to adopt from. You would risk getting an unhealthy dog. Price of Shepsky adults Instead of buying a puppy, you can opt for adopting an adult Shepksy. Adult dogs will already be trained, easy to fit into a busy lifestyle, and cost less both initially and in the long run. You can find these at local shelters. There may be listings for them on pet rehoming sites, as well. These dogs will already be neutered and have had vaccinations. The only downside is you may not be able to verify whether they are first-generation Shepskies. The start-up costs will be the most expensive, afterwards, the ongoing costs will be more affordable. Or it could be a mixture of two or more colors. German Shepherd Husky Mix: Temperament A dog can express much more with his tail in minutes than his owner can express with his tongue in hours! Be sure to take them for a walk first so that you can see how they react to their new surroundings. Many German shepherd puppies will have special needs in regards to exercise and you need to determine this before purchasing your new canine companion. German Shepherd puppies will grow to be very sturdy dogs. They are known for their strong temperament and ability to protect the family. The white German mix puppy is known to be a very affectionate dog that is loyal to its family and will do whatever they are told to do. This is a very handsome dog and has a beautiful white coat with black markings that look like lightning bolts. They are extremely intelligent and respond very well to training. These dogs are great companions for the elderly and children as their gentle and loving disposition means they are great for this environment. German shepherd mixes are beautiful dogs. However, when you purchase a puppy, make sure that you research the type of German shepherd you want. German shepherds come in many colors, but the most popular is the chocolate brown German shepherd mixes. The best German shepherd mix for you will depend on the personality traits and abilities of both your dog and your home. If you are looking for a family companion with a friendly disposition and a protective and energetic demeanor, then you may want to consider purchasing a German shepherd-husky mix. They weigh from 35 to 90lbs and standing at just twenty 26 inches tall, this is an average-sized dog that needs lots of exercises and regular grooming. This is highly intelligent, loyal, and extremely energetic. However, the high activity level may overwhelm some people who are new to these dogs. So before buying a German Shepherd Husky mix puppy you must know the best information and tips for proper nutrition and socialization. These dogs were originally developed to be companion dogs in the herding business. But they have now grown in popularity as a popular sports dog and as a show dog. Because of the personality-oriented training of German Shepherd Huskies, you must prepare for their training and socialization. The training will begin when they are still puppies and should last until they are fully mature. It is also important to make sure your puppy has plenty of socialization and interaction with other dogs and people. German Shepherd Huskies are great dogs and make great family pets. But as with any family pet, you need to train them and socialize with them from puppyhood. You can search online for reputable training programs and classes that will help to get your puppy socializing. The German shepherd-husky mix puppies that you buy from a reputable breeder or shelter will go through a temperament evaluation. During this test, the prospective owner is asked questions about the characteristics of this particular breed. The answers were analyzed to make a list of required characteristics that would be desirable in a dog breed. These tests will be used to help classify the dogs into four groups, the sporting, sensitive, energetic, and independent category, which will then be divided further into three types. The sporting group consists of the most outgoing and adventurous dogs. These dogs have a lot of energy and are eager to play. They have great intelligence and a very warm and friendly personality. They should be socialized very early in their training to prevent aggressive behavior in their later life. The sensitive sub-breed of this breed needs to be trained very gently as they have very sensitive dispositions. This requires more specialized training. The next sub-breed on the list is the energetic German shepherd-husky mix puppies. This breed requires more exercise and vigorous training as compared to the other sub-breeds. This breed will do best in an apartment environment because of its active nature. The last sub-breed on the list is the independent type, which is ideal for those who do not want any of the dog breeds mentioned above. However, it is very rare to find any temperaments other than the mentioned four in the purebred German shepherds. A lot of people prefer the Siberian huskies over the German shepherd dogs simply because they are lighter in weight, which makes them easier to maintain. However, Siberian huskies make very good family pets. It is important to note that any time you purchase German shepherd mixes from a breeder or a pet store, never mix them with any other breeds. It could be disastrous as the new personality of one breed can be overwhelmed by the other. It is also better to consult with an expert before you start training your new dogs. Always remember that a good breeder will always be able to teach you how to properly train your dog. Share this:.

Joyce offers excellent companion dogs, top conformation dogs, world class working dogs, personal or home protection dogs, and professional law enforcement dogs. The Golden Shepherd tends to be a friendly, energetic, and affectionate dog that is loyal to their family and tends to be protective of them. Although they are not recognized by the American Kennel Club, they are recognized by other notable organizations like the American Canine Hybrid Club, Designer Breed Registry, and more. A Golden Shepherd tends to bring the all-around friendly personality of the Golden Retriever and the intelligence and devotion of the German Shepherd into one dog. They love their families and tend to get along with everyone including children. These dogs are not necessarily suspicious of strangers, but they are alert and will tend to bark if they see something they feel you need to know about. Golden Shepherds are moderately adaptable dogs. Because they are high-energy, they tend to do better in homes with yards where they can run. They can adapt to apartment living as long as plenty of time is dedicated to giving them the daily exercise they need. They tend to do well in most climates. But, as with any dog breed, they are sensitive to heat. Because Golden Shepherds are devoted to their families and thrive on spending time with them, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. A mixed-breed dog can inherit the potential health issues common to one, both, or neither of their parent breeds. As a larger, barrel-chested dog breed, the Golden Shepherd, like their parent breeds, is also at a higher risk for bloat. The Golden Shepherd is a highly trainable dog breed. They are intelligent, eager to please, and pick up on things quickly. This makes them a good fit for owners of all experience levels. Puppy training classes can still be a great idea because they offer opportunities to socialize a puppy while also strengthening your bond with them. The Golden Shepherd will have a thick double-coat that sheds moderately year-round and more heavily twice a year as seasons change. A quick daily brushing, especially during seasonal shedding sessions, will help remove loose fur to make your dog more comfortable and also help keep more fur contained to a brush instead of everywhere else. Bathing is on an occasional, as-needed basis. Monthly nail trims are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long or causing issues. Plus, if anything is starting to happen, you can get the vet before it gets more serious. Because many dog owners overlook this, gum disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs. Brushing teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day is ideal. The Golden Shepherd comes from two high-energy dogs, so they require a lot of daily exercise to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime and time to run are the minimum. But, a Golden Shepherd will likely be up for more activity if you are. A trip to the dog park for some off-leash time, playing frisbee or chasing a ball, hiking, swimming, running, and more can all help this dog expend some extra energy. You want to keep their activity low-impact as they are still growing, but once they finish growing, try different activities to see what you both love doing together. You could even try training them for dog sports! A fully-grown Golden Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. A Golden Shepherd generally lives for years. The sad truth is that many pet store purchased pups actually come from puppy mills. Basically, there is zero authenticity with pet stores. You also cultivate a life-long relationship with the breeder, meaning support is available to you anytime you may need it. With My Golden Retriever Puppies , you have the option to come and visit both the puppy and the breeder in person! Golden Retrievers are an adaptable breed, meaning they are better at adapting to seasonal changes and various types of climate than certain other breeds. Your pup deserves better than that, which is why here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we ensure high-quality care is taken of your pet at all times. Breeding Frenchies is a lot of work! It requires a lot of time, effort, and money to breed happy and healthy Frenchies. These breeders are what give French Bulldogs a bad rep. That certainly holds true when looking for a French Bulldog puppy. A high-quality, reputable breeder will conduct many tests to ensure your puppy is free of any preventable genetic health problems. A good breeder can minimize the risk of health issues Getting your French Bulldog from a reputable breeder can minimize the risk of your Frenchie having health issues such as deafness, hip dysplasia , respiratory problems, and more. Not to mention the heartache involved with dealing with a sick pup. Be wary of shady breeders All I know is that my worst nightmare is falling in love with my new Frenchie puppy only to come to find out he has a serious illness that the breeder failed to disclose to me. Consider Investing in Pet Insurance to save money If you are worried about the possibility of serious health issues , pet insurance is a great investment! French Bulldogs have been quickly rising in popularity — in fact, they just ranked 1 on the American Kennel Club rankings in .Why does everybody want a Frenchie?! I could go on all day. The French Bulldog can do it all Frenchies can lay on the couch all day with you or go out to explore the great outdoors! Frenchies are huge couch potatoes! Your Frenchie will be more than happy to travel where ever with you! And does the breeding of the dog drive up the price? When we were originally considering getting a Frenchie, we quickly discovered that blue French Bulldogs were far more expensive than any other color. We ended up opting for a standard colored Frenchie instead and we love him, of course. However, this process did give us a very good insight into how much Blue French Bulldog costs, so I wanted to share that with you today. How much are Blue French Bulldogs? Part of the reason that blue Frenchies are one of the most expensive dog breeds is because of the medical costs involved in the breeding process. Like all dog breeds, if you are looking for a pure-bred Frenchie then adopting a puppy from a professional breeder is recommended. Because of this, professional breeders often forgo natural birth altogether and instead choose to have C-sections performed see how much this costs to remove the puppies safely with minimal risk to their breeding dog. Breeders also often use artificial insemination to impregnate their dogs. This does tend to result in large vet bills which only help in driving up the price of blue French Bulldogs, although you should get the peace of mind the puppy you are buying is safe and healthy, with no repercussions of a difficult natural birth. Another factor when it comes to price is actually dependant on the color of the dog. Because of the high demand for these colors, it does mean that dogs and puppies with blue, tan and black fur are more expensive. Are blue French Bulldogs healthy? Many associations, however, do not recognize the blue Frenchie as an official member of the breed when it comes to competitions. This is because they believe that it suffers from too many different health issues ; but the fact of the matter is that while some Blue Frenchies do develop alopecia hair loss , many other variations of Frenchie are also affected. In reality, most blue French Bulldogs do not suffer from health issues any more than any other kind of Frenchie. I base this opinion on having spoken to owners of blue Frenchies as part of this research, rather than any scientific study. Do blue French Bulldogs shed more hair? French Bulldogs tend to shed their undercoat about twice a year. These guys are not hypoallergenic despite what you might have been told. How long do blue French Bulldogs live for? A healthy, well-bred dog is going to have a longer lifespan than one that had less than stellar origins, which is yet another reason why you should only consider buying puppies from reputable breeders rather than illegal puppy farms or unqualified breeders. Related questions If you are thinking about buying a blue French Bulldogs and are comfortable which how much they might cost, you should consider the following aspects too. What health issues do blue French Bulldogs have? As mentioned above, Blue Frenchies are not really any different to other types of French Bulldog, but that does mean that they may be susceptible to similar health conditions. Because of their breeding history and small, compact anatomy, French Bulldogs do unfortunately have a disposition towards physical and genetic health issues. Should I get a rescue blue French Bulldog? Getting a rescue dog is always a fantastic option and is always recommended especially if you are not looking for a pure-bred. As they are in high demand, blue Frenchie puppies are snapped up very quickly than more common pi-bald or brindle colors, but why not consider getting a slightly older pooch? Adult blue French Bulldogs are far calmer than hyperactive teenage dogs and are an excellent alternative if you are looking for a steady but loyal companion. In fact, if you do buy an adult from rescue, chances are how much you pay for a blue French Bulldog could be considerably less than the average. They are also quiet and often polite, although they can get a little territorial. Dogs are not born fully trained, so getting your puppy trained quickly can go a long way to unlearn their more negative traits. Conclusion Buying any dog is a huge commitment. Our experiences of Frenchies has given us a great insight into how well suited they can be to an owner, and vice versa. The following guides will offer some essential insight:. However, that price can increase significantly, even into five figures, depending on the location and reputation of the breeder. Reproducing requires artificial insemination. These factors increase the investment for French bulldog breeders. The more investment a breeder makes into producing healthy high-quality dogs in good environments, the higher the price will be. The rarer the color is, such as blue, lilac or chocolate, the more you can expect to pay. Certain coat patterns, such as pied, merle or brindle, will also be more expensive. Female French bulldogs and those with blue eyes are pricier as well. Adopting through the French Bulldog Rescue Network is a more affordable way to acquire a new puppy or adult Frenchie. The French bulldog breed is exceptional with many rare characteristics that make them popular among dog owners. But there are also some challenges and things to watch out for. French Bulldog Size Fully grown French bulldogs average 12 inches tall. Adult females often weigh between 16 and 24 pounds, and males reach 20 to 24 pounds. Most French bulldogs will continue to gain weight until about 14 months old but stop gaining height between nine and 12 months. There are also mini Frenchies, also known as teacup French bulldogs. These are bred to be miniature versions of standard French bulldogs, weighing between five and 14 pounds. They typically shed in spring and fall, so you should increase coat brushing during that time to help reduce hair in your home. This can help you save on grooming costs. French Bulldog Appearance Along with breeds like English Bulldogs and pugs, French bulldogs are a brachycephalic breed, which means they have a shortened snout. Their faces are wrinkly and scrunched, giving them a distinct look, even as puppies. French Bulldog Colors French bulldogs come in many different coat colors. These include neutral colors — such as cream, gray, tan and black — as well as more rare colors like lilac, blue and chocolate. The rarer the color, the more expensive the price of a French bulldog will be. French Bulldog Temperament These pups are affectionate and playful, making them great companions. Training is recommended for French bulldogs since they can march to the beat of their own drum without guidance. Most Frenchies respond well to training, especially when treats are involved. Trainers believe French bulldogs understand commands but are moody and will respond as they feel like it. Frenchies are great family dogs, do well around other pets and prefer companionship. A companion will also allow you to leave them alone for longer periods of time without them getting frustrated. But, of course, another pet will come with its own costs. French Bulldog Activity Level Frenchies are not the best dog if you want a jogging companion. French Bulldog Life Expectancy French bulldogs have an average lifespan of 12 years if well taken care of. If they remain in great health, they can live as long as 15 years. Your veterinarian will periodically examine your Frenchie to ensure he or she is growing properly. Due to their flat faces and short necks, it can be difficult for French bulldogs to use standard feeding bowls. You can instead provide elevated dog food and water bowls to help your pet eat and drink more comfortably. Buying treats, toys or a comfortable dog bed can also help your Frenchie feel welcome in its new home. You can recognise these dogs with their distinct appearance such as the bat ears, short coat, a smushed face and a great expression on their faces. The only thing different about a Blue French bulldog is their rare bluish grey color and their price. These dogs are flat faced dogs and are known for their looks and their great personality. The French Bulldog has become one of the most popular dogs in the United States and has become the 4th most popular dog in the United States. How were Blue French Bulldogs Bred Blue French Bulldogs are widely popular for their fur and are also associated with lots of health issues in their lineage. There are some common misconceptions about Blue French bulldogs not being healthy. Blue French bulldogs are healthy if they are bred properly and carefully by an experienced breeder. Their genes are responsible for this change in their beautiful coat color. People often believe that Blue French bulldogs are not healthy and get sick more often than the standard colors of the breed. It is important to choose the best dogs for breeding for a really good litter. A majority of Blue French bulldog puppies come out very healthy and have a really beautiful coat color. If both the dam and the sire carry this dilute gene then it is very likely that the litter will have a bluish grey coat. The dilute gene will also turn their nose and their eyes blue. Breeders have to look out for these dams every step of the way. The litter is unexpected like any other breed. Frenchies tend to have puppies in a litter. Blue French bulldog puppies are difficult to breed because the breeders have to find suitable dogs that carry the dilute gene. These are some of the variations of the Blue French bulldog. Blue Fawn French bulldog This type of blue French bulldog can look a little dusky in color. They not only carry double recessive genes as the pied and blue ones but also the genes for the fawn color. Blue fawn French bulldog for sale can be hard to find as they are pretty rare. There is a very high chance that the French Bulldog litter will turn out to be a Blue Merle French Bulldog litter as it is a dominant gene. The gene dilutes the colors of the coat to a color which is lighter than the original. These genes give the puppy a very different color with patches of different shapes and sizes. The cost is very high for this pup if you want to buy a Merle french bulldog for sale. These can be visible when the puppy is around 4 weeks old. This is a very adaptable dog who can also be comfortable with small apartments. You need to be able to dish out some money to take care of Blue French bulldogs as they can be high maintenance. They require regular health checkups and a great diet to keep their coat healthy and beautiful. This could indicate the dog is coming from a puppy mill. You can read why you should avoid buying dogs from puppy mills here. But the popularity of the dog means there can be a lot of competition for the Frenchies that do need a home. There are a lot of factors that can influence price, and if you are looking for a show dog or a dog for breeding, you should expect to pay a lot more. Certain colors, which are desirable but genetically quite rare, can also push up the price. A brindle or black puppy will usually be at the lower end of the scale, but a breeder might ask a lot more for a platinum or blue fawn puppy. This is Micro, a perfect body specimen for a Frenchie. He also has a blue coat and orange eyes, which are quite rare in dogs. What About Mini Frenchies? Mini Frenchies, also known as Teacup Frenchies, are the same fantastic dog, but they are quite a bit smaller than usual. You can expect them to weigh just 5 to 14 pounds on average. Due to their smaller size, though, their bodies can be fragile, so it is important not to engage in rough play with them. These dogs are even harder to breed see below than standard French bulldogs, so they are also quite a bit more expensive. Why are they so expensive, then? One factor is high demand since they are a very desirable dog breed. But that is not the whole story, since Labs are also one of the most popular dog breeds. Health Problems One of the biggest factors is these dogs have a lot of health problems. Most of their health issues are related to their flat, brachycephalic faces similar to Pugs and American bulldogs , which makes them particularly prone to breathing issues and allergies. This unique facial structure can also affect the formation of their jaw, and the health of their eyes, and can even affect their healing from certain illnesses and injuries. On top of this, they can also be prone to hip dysplasia, kneecap shifts, and heat stress. Fortunately, breeders try to control these breed-specific issues. It is essential that responsible breeders do their best to control these conditions, which means DNA scanning, genetic testing, multiple trips to the vet, and paying extra close attention to the developing puppies. Of course, all of this comes with a cost. Breeding Problems The other big problem is that Frenchies are extremely hard to breed. As well as the operation itself is expensive, the mother and pups need extra care afterward. Plus, breeders need to give their mother dogs significantly longer to recuperate before they can think about breeding them again. On top of that, French bulldogs have small litters—usually just three puppies. It is very unusual for a Frenchie to have five or more puppies in a single litter. So, if you are looking for a French bulldog puppy, you can expect to be on a waiting list for several months before a puppy is available. As well as being expensive to buy, French bulldogs can be pretty costly to care for, again mostly because of their health problems. They will probably need regular trips to the vet, and insuring them can be expensive because they are known to have health issues. But what are some of the main costs that you can expect to incur when bringing home a new puppy? Supplies It can surprise pet parents just how many things you need to care for a new dog. For starters, your new pup will need a bed, toys, bowls, a collar, and a leash. A crate can also be a big expense if you choose to crate train. However, because crate training is not so common among French bulldogs, first-time owners might also want to consider some professional training classes. Food Food is one of the biggest neverending expenses for any dog. Puppy food is also a bit more expensive than adult food because of its high protein content. Ideally, your dog should be eating puppy food until they are about 9 months old. French bulldogs should be eating around 25 to 30 calories per pound of their body weight each day. You can read more about pet insurance for puppies here. They will usually only bark when there is something wrong, so it is worth paying attention when they do vocalize. This is one of the reasons why they make excellent apartment dogs. While French bulldogs are adorable, they are specifically bred for their appearance, and this has led to a lot of genetic issues that affect their health and can leave them in a lot of pain in their later years. Many people object to putting the health of an animal second to appearance and therefore object to buying French bulldogs and supporting the purebred breeding industry. In theory, if there was no demand for these dogs, this kind of exploitative breeding would stop. In practice, this is difficult to imagine, considering how popular the breed is. Can French bulldogs stay home alone? French bulldogs actually tolerate being left alone relatively well. However, all dogs need a lot of love and companionship, and no dog responds well to being left on their own for 10 hours a day five days a week. Dogs become members of the family, and if they are going to thrive, they need to be treated with that kind of attention. Are Frenchies hard to potty train? However, they are little dogs with small bladders. They also tend to gobble down their food, which means they can be prone to smelly gas expulsions. How much exercise does my Frenchie need? French bulldogs do well on just a 15 to minute vigorous walk each day. They are also quite playful, so they burn off energy just playing around as well. Are French bulldogs aggressive? Despite the reputation of bulldogs, Frenchies are not aggressive. They are friendly and get on well with people and other animals. However, all animals are a combination of nature and nurture, so they can learn aggressive habits if they are not properly cared for. Are Frenchies high maintenance? They can also be left alone without expecting too much trouble. On the other hand, their tendency towards breed-specific health issues does mean they need regular visits to the vet. They may need special medications for things like breathing issues, and in later life, they may need things like a special bed. The Verdict French bulldogs are excellent dogs. They are great little companions who will find it easy to live in your apartment with you, but they are also fun-loving and curious. While they are great dogs, they are also quite expensive. This is due to high demand and some pretty serious difficulties when it comes to breeding them. They have small litters, almost always delivered by c-section, and health screenings and vet visits are a big burden for breeders. If you want something special, such as a rare color, you should expect to pay a lot more. You can also expect them to be relatively expensive dogs to own because they do need regular and close contact with a good vet to maintain their health. At a glance, the French bulldog is: Highly intelligent and trainable Small, meaning it does well in fairly small apartments Expensive due to demand and how difficult they are to breed Prone to breed-specific health issues So, are they worth all this expense and trouble? We think they are. French bulldogs can be the ideal pet for first-time owners with limited space and time but a lot of love to give. Helps ease anxiety in their new home. We love using Bully Sticks to help divert these unwanted behaviors. Check out more of our favorites on our New Puppy Checklist. They have a double coat, which is dense, short and water repellant. The Labrador is also used as a hunting or field dog. Labs shed moderately, about two times a year and they need to be brushed on regular basis. Overall, their coat needs minimal attention. Brushing should be done about once a week. They are loving, people-oriented, and because they are patient with kids, they make wonderful family dogs. This breed is excellent with children and elderly alike. The Labrador Retriever is a stable companion, not easily upset by strange occurrences or things. These fine qualities make them ideally suited for the job of service dog. They are used as guide dogs for the blind and as search-and-rescue dogs. They generally will not act aggressively, so they are not good guard dogs. Excessive barking is not generally typical of the breed. They bark only to sound an alarm, or warning, as a stranger approaches. Labs are intelligent and easy to train. If the dog is acquired from a reputable breeder, the dog will not be hyper, but Labs are active dogs. Labs do not fully mature until they reach three years of age and are mentally a puppy until this time. Your Labrador will require attention and plenty of daily exercise. Training required: socialization and obedience. Labrador Retrievers love to swim. They like to chew, are good climbers and are prone to dig if not given proper positive attention. They do best if given mental stimulation, such as proper obedience training, daily exercise. Both sexes make good pets. Males are more dependent, females somewhat independent. The Labrador is susceptible to hip dysplasia and other joint problems, such as OCD and arthritis. Obesity can be a problem, especially in their senior years. So, finding high-quality dog food containing only necessary and healthy fats is best. Likewise, treats should be given not in excess but only when deserved. Pugs are more than happy to spend most of the day on the couch, and while Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are similarly relaxed, they are a bit more energetic and willing to participate in activities. Regardless, your dog will need moderate daily exercise. Early socialization and obedience training will be essential to train your Pugalier properly. Pugs are sensitive creatures and do not respond well to harsh training methods. Without positive reinforcement and rewards, your dog can get hurt feelings and lose the desire to train. When training your Pugalier, you should never use punishments or other negative reinforcement. Instead, focus on the positives by providing rewards, praise, and treats for desired behavior. If the coat is more like the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, they will require multiple brushings per week as well as a bath every month or so. However, you can minimize the chances of your pet suffering a chronic disease by maintaining regular veterinary appointments. Minor Conditions Pugs and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are susceptible to eye conditions such as corneal ulcers and cataracts, so watch out for any signs of eye discomfort, irritation, or pain. Your Pugalier will also be prone to patellar luxation , which is essentially a displaced kneecap. The severity of this condition varies, and it can predispose your pet to other conditions later in life. Hip dysplasia is another condition to be aware of, which often appears as weakness or pain in the hind limbs. You may notice your dog limping, struggling to stand, or having difficulty climbing furniture or stairs. Serious Conditions A serious condition that your Pugalier is at high risk for is obesity. Mitral valve disease is another concerning condition that your dog may be prone to. The mitral valve is a structure that prevents blood from flowing backward through the heart. When Pugaliers develop mitral valve disease, the valve degenerates and becomes less effective. The cause of this condition is unknown, but genetics is suspected to play a significant role. However, spaying can be more expensive than neutering due to the invasive nature of the surgery, and a female Pugalier may cost a bit extra upfront. It is said that Charles II was so enamored by his dogs that he brought them everywhere he went. An assassination attempt on Prince William was thwarted due to his Pug barking at the sight of the intruders. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, on the other hand, were bred to aid in hunting efforts and still retain these keen instincts. However, they are also more than happy to snuggle up on the couch. They can thrive in nearly any family situation or housing and only require moderate exercise. They get along with other pets, making them an ideal companion for a multi-pet household. Bringing a Pugalier home will require a lot of work, especially if you acquire one from a breeder. You must dedicate a significant amount of time to researching any breeders you approach, as the Pugalier is considered a designer breed and may be irresponsibly bred as a result. If you think the Pugalier is the right fit for you, we recommend beginning your search at your local animal shelter. Wherever you find your Pugalier, they will undoubtedly become a cherished friend for life. See also:. What is a Pugalier? This cross can also be referred to as a Cavalier Pug mix. This hybrid dog is a relatively new designer breed combining to types of canines that have been around for many centuries. The average Pugalier can weigh between 6. Penny weighs 7. Pugalier appearance 2Pug West the Pugalier Photo: 2pug. They can have the eyes of the Pug, which are slightly protruding. Their coat can be soft to touch with wavy hair. Pugaliers can be black, brown, grey, white and fawn with medium-length hair and a dense coat. Ruth shed some insight on the appearance of her Pugalier, 2Pug West. Depending on how much Cavalier is mixed with Pug can really changed the appearance of a Pugalier. He does appear to have longer and floppy ears and his nose is not as flat as a purebred. Cavaliers make affectionate, loving, loyal and playful companion dogs. Pugs tend to have sweet personalities but they can have a stubborn streak. Pugaliers will usually be bright, funny and sociable pets, so they can make an excellent choice for families with children. Penny described the personality of her dog to give our readers an insight into Pugalier temperament. They have such a sweet nature! She loves cuddles but also loves her alone time. She loves to greet you when you get home by jumping and silently howling but after a few minutes, she will snooze on the couch. They are very gentle but when excited can be a little rough in a play type of way. She is also very inquisitive and will sniff everything and everyone! I also find with mine, he is extremely playful and enjoys exercise. Finally, Jack finished off our round up of Pugalier personalities. Do Pugaliers suffer from separation anxiety? Separation anxiety can occur when pet parents leave their canine companion at home alone. It usually manifests itself as incessant barking, howling or whining, destructive chewing or digging and even defecating or urinating inside the home. Jack the Pugalier does suffer from separation anxiety. I did find our Pugalier was showing signs of separation anxiety before. But we got a second puppy in the house and it absolutely helps with this. Do Pugaliers like to cuddle? While they like to dish out affection to their owners, Pugaliers are likely to enjoy some attention for themselves. Ruth explains that her Pugalier, 2Pug West, demands a lot of attention. He requires lots of attention and prefers to nap and lay down with us rather then being on his own. Do Pugaliers make great family pets? Channelle believes Pugaliers are a great option for family pets based upon her experience with Penny. They are friendly, loving, loyal and gentle for the most part unless they are super excited and want to play but they never hurt you! Pugaliers would be an ideal pooch for first time dog owners, the elderly or a family with children. I can guarantee, anyone who brings a Pugalier into their life , would have a gorgeous friend for life! Are Pugaliers easy to train? Channelle provided our readers with some insight into how she trained Penny. They can be with persistence and positive reinforcements. We had adopted Penny when she was 6 from a shelter so she was a little harder to train but now she is great! Pugaliers love to dig and a prone to separation anxiety but if you train them at a very young age, they will be the perfect pooch! How much exercise do Pugaliers need? Wag Walking recommend 30 minutes of exercise a day. Penny, for instance, relishes the chance to explore despite having low to moderate exercise needs. A small backyard is perfect for them, even a decent sized apartment. If you have a few toys for them and a decent sized area for zoomies, they will be happy! Are Pugaliers hypoallergenic? Do Pugaliers shed? Dog Time give the Pugalier four out of five stars with regards to shedding. It really depends how frequently you groom them I guess. We brush Penny a few times a week and she is professionally groomed once every weeks and now she hardly sheds at all. Penny also has more of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel coat which is much longer than the more common Pugalier you see which has more of a pug coat. I guess you just have to keep on top of it. Do Pugaliers need regular grooming? Pugaliers will benefit from regular grooming to remove dead hair and debris from their coat. Like we said above, Pugaliers can differ from dog to dog depending on which traits they inherit from each parent. Not necessarily. The only thing that should be done regularly is cleaning between their wrinkles. I also find depending on the bloodline of your pug, they do shed a lot of fur so look into getting some special shampoo and brush them regularly to get rid of excess fur. Do Pugaliers have any health problems? The research I did prior to getting Jack told me that cavaliers and pugs are prone to hip dysplasia. Are Pugaliers fussy eaters? Compared to a lot of the common dog treats, he actually prefers fresh fruit and veggies like avocado, bok choy, sweet corn and tomatoes. Do Pugaliers get along with other dogs? Having said that, we recommend pet parents to socialize their puppies from a young age and expose them to lots of people and vaccinated dogs to help their social skills develop. Pugalier price Pugaliers can range in price if you buy them from a breeder. But this was 6 years ago and I also drove very far to the countryside. In more metro areas, pugs and pug mixes are generally a lot more expensive. Are Pugaliers expensive? Is this a cross breed that is suited to first-time dog owners? Ruth says yes based upon her experience with Penny. Our Pugalier is extremely smart and picked up tricks very easily, so for that it made it super easy as new dog owners. If you have another dog already, Pugaliers would make a great addition to your family. Otherwise if you are home frequently, they would be amazing as a first pet! Pugaliers to follow on Instagram If you want to learn more about Pugaliers, we recommend following some members of the breed on social media to learn more. Here are some Pugalier accounts to check out on Instagram. Your vet can help you develop a care routine that will keep your dog healthy. Pugaliers are prone to weight gain, and they have moderate energy levels. Make sure your pup gets several potty breaks through the day with active play sessions and short walks mixed in. Check their ears for debris and pests daily and clean them as recommended by your vet. They should not be clicking against the floor. Your groomer can help with this. If your pup inherits the folds in their skin from the pug parents, make sure to keep the skin clean and dry, as they are prone to developing skin infections. You should brush their teeth daily, as small breeds are prone to dental issues. Pugalier Feeding An ideal Pugalier diet should be formulated for a small breed with a moderate energy level. They have a tendency to gain weight if they are overfed, so you should stick to a regular feeding schedule and not leave food out during the day. A good brushing per week will probably do, though if their coats are more like their Cavalier parent, they may need two to three brushes per week. Baths should be sparse as they need their natural oils for optimum radiance. Pugalier Children And Other Pets Because the Pugalier is on the small side, they can be easily injured by overly excited children. Pugaliers are great for families of all ages of kids, just supervise and make sure everyone knows how to play gently. When it comes to other pets, Pugaliers get along well with most animals if they are introduced slowly and calmly, and early socialization will help this go smoothly. Always be cautious introducing new dogs to each other. While Pugaliers are very friendly, some dogs are not. Dogs should always be separated during meal times. Pugalier Rescue Groups It may be hard to find a breed-specific rescue for Pugaliers because they are a mixed breed. However, you may want to try Pug or Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breed specific rescues, as they often care for mixes, as well. Here are some rescues you can try:.
It has however not been recognized by the American or Canadian Kennel Clubs. Different kennel clubs recognize it by a variety of names. Their desire for staying in the company of human beings makes them upset or stressed when left alone for extended durations. They are beaming with energy, loving to play around the house. Though they enjoy the company of children, these dogs do not like to be teased, reacting violently by barking or snapping when disturbed. Therefore, adult supervision is essential when your little ones are interacting with them. They are not too indifferent to strangers. On being acquainted with another dog, they begin barking initially, which subsides gradually making them interact well with the other canine breeds. Care Exercise As this Scottish Terrier-Poodle mix has high energy levels, they need to be exercised on a regular basis. Arranging for interesting indoor games as well as taking them on brisk walks or playing outdoors with them will suffice their needs. Grooming The coat of the Scoodle is mostly of medium length requiring gentle brushing few times in a week to prevent it from getting tangled or matted also helping to retain its shine. The long-haired Scoodle even requires its coat to be clipped by a professional groomer after every six weeks. They should be bathed when required as frequent bathing will take away the essential oils. Cleaning of their ears will help preventing infection, whereas brushing their teeth daily will eliminate chances of gingivitis that might occur due to tartar build-up. The eyes of the Scoodle are also to be wiped clean so that there may be no tear straining or accumulation of discharge. Health Problems Though this breed has no known genetic disorders or severe ailments, they might be prone to certain common canine diseases like hypoglycemia, pancreatitis, patellar luxation, lymphangiectasia and liver shunts. Training They have sharp brains but may be too vocal, assertive and stubborn at times. These designer dogs are also prone to suffering from separation anxiety. Therefore obedience and behavioral training is to be imparted to the Scoodle puppies. They must be given socialization training as well to reduce their aggressiveness towards other dogs. A firm and patient trainer is needed to guide them in a tactful way with a lot of positive reinforcements and treats. Feeding The Scoodle should be given dry dog food as it has risks of tartar build-up that may, in turn, result in tooth decay. A highly nutritious diet with sufficient amount of vitamins and minerals will help them maintain a good health. Leave a Reply Your email address will not be published. Lifespan Sociability Some Scoodles look precisely like a poodle. Others look like Scottish Terriers. Most, though, look like something in the middle. Their fur may be straight and silky or curly and wiry or anything in between for that matter. These dogs often have quite a bit of energy. Poodles were built for all-day swimming and are very energetic. Their puppies often inherit these same traits — at least to some extent. While these dogs are very smart, they can also be somewhat stubborn. Many owners describe them as being too smart for their own good. Because of this, they need a strong, affectionate leader. They are not good choices for first-time owners simply because of their intelligence level. As they are a mixed breed, they tend to be healthier than their purebred counterparts. While they are prone to some health problems, they usually do not experience as many health problems as their parents. These dogs can be a bit protective. They are very fond of their people, but may be aloof with strangers. However, this is not necessarily the case. Firstly, there is no truly hypoallergenic dog. Therefore, someone with dog allergies will be allergic to every dog, not just those that shed. Many will shed quite a bit, though some may shed very little. You have no idea until they mature and actually start shedding. Because of their smaller size, many people assume that these dogs like to cuddle. While some do like to cuddle, of course, others prefer to be left alone. Poodles are extremely smart, so there is a chance their offspring will inherit their genius. Many owners think having an intelligent dog will be great. However, they are often more work than potential owners realize. These dogs need mental stimulation, which will require more work on your part. They require quite a bit of extra time. It depends on what traits they inherit from their parents, as well as their upbringing. Dogs that were socialized intensely as puppies are almost always going to be gentler and friendlier than dogs who were not. Still, this breed is likely to have some common traits. They will likely be quite affectionate and bond closely with members of their family. These dogs can suffer from separation anxiety, which can cause destructive behavior. Training can help alleviate the symptoms of separation anxiety, but it can be quite a lot of work. Early crate training can be helpful to prevent separation anxiety from forming as the dog ages. Many of these dogs are loyal and may be a bit protective. Socialization is necessary to prevent aggression. Luckily, these dogs are also quite intelligent. They quickly take to training, though they can be a bit stubborn. Having a healthy relationship is your best bet for guaranteeing that a Scoodle will listen to your commands. Most of the time, the Scoodle is not the friendliest dog in the world. They tend to be a bit untrusting with strangers. Over time, though, they will warm up. Are These Dogs Good for Families? Sometimes, Scoodles can be one-person dogs. Simply put, this means that they tend to bond very strongly with one person. In some families, this can be a problem. If you want a dog that is going to bond heavily with your children, this is probably not the right dog for you. They take a bit to warm up and will not tolerate other dogs getting in their face. You may need to keep them separate from your other animals for a bit until they have adjusted. They do not have particularly high prey-instincts, so they are usually fine with cats and smaller animals. Of course, socialization is important. They can be a bit protective and take a bit of time to warm up to other dogs. However, they are not as territorial as some other dogs. They can get along with some other canines, but it may require a bit of time. However, they are quite a bit active. Because of this, they may require quite a bit more food than you might imagine. Of course, it is also essential that they get all the nutrients they need. They do not have any particular nutritional needs, though. They need about the same vitamins and minerals as other breeds. These dogs are not particularly prone to being overweight. Being overweight is associated with a large variety of health consequences, so it is important to keep your pooch at a healthy weight. They are somewhat prone to Bloat, so you should feed them at least twice a day. We will discuss this condition more in the health section below. A proper macronutrient content of the food is essential. It is very difficult to find a food that fits this nutritional ratio. However, choosing a food that is high in protein and fat, while low in carbohydrates, should be suitable. The Poodle was bred to work all day in an intense setting, and this mixed breed often inherits this. They are often active and quite energetic. Daily exercise is necessary to keep these dogs healthy and behaved. A long daily walk is your best bet, though your pooch may also need extra playtime in the backyard as well. Plan to walk a dozen miles a week and exercise your dog for about an hour each day. Because these dogs are intelligent, they also need some degree of mental stimulation each day. This stimulation can be achieved through training, puzzle toys, or games like hide-and-seek. These dogs do best in active families. If you get them outside enough, they will do fine in an apartment. Because of this, they can learn basically any command you can think of. However, their intelligence means that they can also be extremely stubborn. They are smart enough to get out of punishments and figure out how to get what they want without necessarily listening to you. They also require quite a bit of mental stimulation. Training can fulfill this niche. However, you can also use puzzle toys and games like hide-in-seek. It depends on which parent they inherit their coat from. The grooming routine the Scoodle needs depends on their coat type. In almost every case, weekly brushing will be needed at the very least. Dogs with particularly long coats may need to be brushed even more to prevent tangles. They may also need regular trimming, like their Poodle parent. Like all dogs, you will need to take proper care of their nails and teeth. Your groomer can clip their nails for you, or you can do it yourself. You should brush their teeth daily. Baths are not necessary unless your pooch gets dirty. If you visit the groomers regularly, your dog will get plenty of baths there. In general, mixed breeds are much healthier than their purebred counterparts. This is simply because they inherit a wider variety of genes, which prevents them from sharing many of the common genetic disorders their parents may have. In other words, mixed breeds come from a larger gene pool, making them healthier. They can inherit health difficulties from either of their parents. Being aware of these problems is essential since early diagnoses are often the key to treatment. Minor Conditions. They are likely to be a small to medium dog, bred from either the Toy or Miniature variety of Poodle. Meet the Scoodle! By all accounts, this crossbreed is equipped with good looks, lots of smarts, and tons of personality! However, the Scoodle is a first-generation crossbreed, meaning there are likely to be many unknowns about him. But what exactly is a crossbreed and why is there controversy surrounding the topic? As previously stated, the Scottish Terrier Poodle mix is a crossbreed, meaning he is the offspring of the purebred Poodle and the purebred Scottish Terrier. You may also have heard the term designer dog or hybrid dog. These are all terms used to refer to a crossbreed, such as the Scoodle. Not necessarily. While this question is part of the debate when it comes to crossbreeds, supporters of the practice insist there is a big difference between mutts and crossbreeds. By definition, a crossbreed is a dog who is the offspring of two specific breeds. A mutt has a lineage of several different breeds in his bloodline. To learn more about this subject, visit us here. The rest of the controversy regarding crossbreeding is a bit more complex. Supporters of crossbreeding claim that crossbreeding could be a solution to these genetic health defects. Others shake their heads at the notion, however. They state that crossbreed dogs can be just as susceptible to certain health defects as purebred dogs, if not more so. If you are interested in learning more about other common objections of crossbreeding, click here. The studies are still ongoing regarding the controversy. For that reason, his exact origin is vague, but we can still get an idea of his lineage and what makes him so unique by looking into the histories of his purebred parents, the Poodle and the Scottish Terrier. Origin of the Poodle The Poodle is a famous dog, known for his fanciful haircut and prim-and-proper reputation. Commonly believed to have hailed from France, the Poodle is now thought to have come from Germany over years ago. Originally duck hunting dogs, Poodles were renowned for their swimming abilities. In fact, this is where their flamboyant haircuts come from. Later, the Poodle became a sort of fashion statement amongst nobles in France, and his ability to delight the masses made him an excellent entertainer as well. Ranking in at number seven out of on the American Kennel Club AKC list of most popular dog breeds, the Poodle comes in three size varieties, including standard, miniature, and toy. Now onto the Scottie! Origin of the Scottish Terrier True to his name, the Scottish Terrier, or Scottie as he is sometimes called, hails from the Scottish Highlands where he earned his keep by hunting rats, foxes, and badgers. The Scottie is an ancient breed, with some experts surmising he is the oldest of the Highland Terriers! Despite his origins as a farming dog, the Scottish Terrier became popular with royalty, particularly in the17th century when Scottish born King James l began giving the Scottish Terrier to his friends and acquaintances as presents. Scottish Terriers made their way to America in and were officially registered by the American Kennel Club just two years later. Now, what can we expect the Scoodle to look like? Since the Scoodle is a crossbreed, pinpointing his looks as specifically as we can with purebreds is nearly impossible. The Poodle and the Scottie vary greatly in appearance and their offspring, the Scottie Poodle mix, could inherit a variety of characteristics from either purebred parent. Parent Breed Characteristics While they do come in three size varieties, the miniature Poodle is most likely going to be selected to breed with the Scottish Terrier to create the Scoodle. The Miniature Poodle weighs 10 to 15 pounds and stands at about 10 to 15 inches. The Scottish Terrier, on the other hand, weighs an average of 18 to 22 pounds and stands about 10 inches tall. The size of your Scoodle will depend on the size of its Poodle parent. Since odds are that the Poodle parent of your Scoodle will be a miniature Poodle, you can most likely expect your Scoodle to be a small to medium-sized dog. Defining Characteristics of the Scoodle Both the Scottish Terrier and the Poodle are hypoallergenic, meaning they do not shed. The Poodle has a lean, muscular body and a thick, curly coat that comes in three colors: Apricot. A Scoodle who is left bored or anxious can become destructive. So, making sure they have plenty of stimulation is going to be necessary. They can learn to tolerate children if socialized early but may be nippy if handled roughly or disrespected. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. Generally, Scoodles are healthy dogs that love to play with their owners. Make sure to welcome your Scoodle puppy with a comfy bed, treats, and toys when you bring them home so they can adapt easily. Owners of Scoodles will need a firm hand when it comes to training their Scoodle. Are Scoodles Good Family Dogs? Families with young children will want to watch their children when interacting with their Scoodle. Scoodles are not as tolerant of being manhandled as some other dog breeds and may snap at a child who is unaware of how to interact with them respectfully. While young socialization can help, Scoodles may never accept being mistreated. Scoodles can be good with dogs, but in a similar vein to young children, Scoodles will not tolerate a dog who is too uncivilized with them. Socialization is essential when introducing your Scoodle to another dog, as is training the other dog to respect your Scoodle. Scoodles may chase and harass cats as they are energetic and have strong prey drives. They were bred to hunt rodents. So, never leave a Scoodle alone with a small animal for the safety of both animals. As with dogs, socialization is critical. Scoodles are highly intelligent and respond well to training. So, training your Scoodle to treat other animals appropriately is essential to their wellbeing. If you want to feed your dog wet food, adjust the dry food amounts to avoid gaining too much weight. Scoodles require someone who will be firm and respect their space and understand when the training has to be over. A Scoodle who takes more strongly after their Poodle parent will have less intense grooming needs since their shedding will be minimized. When dogs are purebred, their genetics are usually more carefully considered when breeding a sire and dam. Minor Conditions. Then you might want to consider getting a Scoodle. A cross between Scottish Terriers and Mini or Toy Poodles, the Scoodle is a compact, hardy dog that will keep the vermin and intruders out of your yard. Let us study the characteristics that make this designer dog so popular. What is a Scoodle? Poodles — History Poodle is a German dog breed thought to have been created as a duck-hunting dog. Today, Poodles are considered one of the top 10 smartest dog breeds in the world and have consistently ranked in the No. Origin of Scoodle Crossbred dogs like Scoodles have always existed since the dawn of time. Two purebred dogs of different breeds come together to create a third breed. However, breeders started taking a special interest in the crossbreeding process when they saw its benefits. They started studying complex canine genetics to create dogs that retained the best characteristics of the parent dog breeds. The Poodle was considered one of the best dog breeds to cross with other dogs on account of two factors: its superior intelligence and hypoallergenic coat that made it suitable for people with pet allergies. This gave rise to the popularity of Doodle breeds — hybrid dogs having one Poodle parent. The Scoodle was one such creation. Scoodles are small dainty dogs but their height and weight are not standard. How big a Scoodle puppy will grow up depends on the Poodle parent used in the breeding program. Most breeders use Toy or Miniature Poodles to cross with Scottish terriers. Scottie Poo puppies usually grow between inches 20 to 36 cm at the shoulders and weigh around lb. Scottie-Poos can have so many different appearances that they are often mistaken for other dog breeds. If you check online, you will find that Scoodles tend to have diverse appearances. Even two puppies from the same litter might look completely different from each other. Some Scoodles are born with a double coat like their Scottie parent. Their coat may be wiry and dense with a soft undercoat. This type of coat needs plenty of grooming. Scoodles often have short legs like the Scottish Terrier. Despite their short stature, they have powerful hind legs that can dig. This makes Scoodles quite the escape artists — so you might want to secure your yard to ensure that does not happen. Are Scoodles Hypoallergenic? Scottish Doodles are hypoallergenic since both parent dog breeds have hypoallergenic, low-shedding coats. A Scottie has a water-resistant coat that sheds minimally and the Poodle is also known for its water-resistant and low-shedding coat. Resultantly, the Scoodle also sheds less and has a water-resistant coat. Do Scoodles Need Grooming? All dogs need grooming-it is essential to keep them healthy. Similarly, the Scoodles with a Poodle-like coat will need special cuts and regular brushing to prevent mats and tangles. Scoodles Personality and Temperament The Scottie Poodle Mix are independent dogs and this independent streak sometimes makes them seem stubborn. They also are highly intelligent and while that may aid training, their independent nature could be a hindrance. Many a Scoodle owner is known to get frustrated during the training process. But, with patience, persistence, and consistency, combined with the use of diverse positive training methods, one can see favourable results. Being eager to please, they thrive on praise and will do anything to see a smile on your face. These smart dogs understand everything you say. Despite their small size, they have quite the bark. Their loud barking can keep vermin and intruders from getting in your yard. You will have to train your puppy to only bark on cue. Remember: Scoodles are highly territorial dogs that love to patrol the house both inside and out. Since Scoodles are independent, they will gladly spend time alone. It is a good idea to get your Scoodle puppy used to crate training from an early age. Sometimes, Scoodles tend to get attached to one person in the house. For your ScottiePoo that chosen individual is everything and they will shower all their affection on that person. A properly socialised Scottish Doodle can get along well with children and other dogs. However, without socialisation, they can be quite grumpy toward other house pets. Therefore you must socialise early and often. Is a Scoodle Right For You? Scoodles need to be a part of a family but also need plenty of socialisation with kids and pets. Adults are the best companions for Scoodles. Some Scottiepoos also need regular grooming including hand-stripping and visits to a professional groomer. Therefore, before you buy or adopt a Scoodle, ask yourself if you would be able to do all this and more. Think about whether you are prepared to keep this small dog with a huge personality. If you already have a large and aggressive dog, then a Scoodle may not be right for you. Scoodles follow their instincts and will hunt, dig, chase, and even kill small pets. To keep this little warrior healthy, you will also need to participate in daily brisk walks. If you are too busy for that, then you might want to consider getting a lapdog breed. How Much is a Scoodle? You can also consider Scottie Poo adoption by contacting rescue shelters near you. In addition to the price of your Scoodle puppy, you might want to consider other costs that come with dog ownership. What to Feed a Scoodle? In the first few days when your pet comes home, the best food for your Scoodle puppy is the one the breeder was feeding it. You can later switch to dog food as recommended by your vet nutritionist. Always make dietary changes gradually to prevent digestive upsets. Health Issues in Scoodles Like all designer dogs, Scoodles are quite healthy and hardy. The best poodle mix breeders DNA test their breeding dogs for coat traits and genetic screening of diseases. Similarly, ethical breeders also hip-score their dogs before breeding to minimise the risk of their ScottiePoos developing hip dysplasia. Most Scoodles have a lifespan of years. Nigel adopted Cooper with hopes that he would make a good companion for his other dog, Molly. It turns out Cooper had travelled from the town centre of Dungannon, through Cookstown and Magherafelt and all the way to Tobermore, where his old family live. The charity calculated that Cooper must have walked a total of 40 miles, with sighting reports suggesting he travelled across main A roads, forests, fields and country roads over 27 days. Cooper the Golden Retriever has lived a film-plot life that not many would believe. After being handed to the dog pound by his old family, his days in kennels came to an end when he was re-homed. But the devoted new owner couldn't stop him thinking of his old home - so he bolted from the car and spent the next 27 days on the run! The dog walked more than 40 miles alone, through back woods and along main roads, moving mostly at night and surviving without humans to feed him. He eventually found his way back after walking for 40 miles Cooper's missing poster put up by his worried new family BelfastLive report he travelled from the town centre of Dungannon via Cookstown to Magherafelt and finally to the place he had lived as a puppy, Tobermore, in Northern Ireland. Cooper evaded organised searches day and night, he avoided traffic and human contact, darting into secret safety holes to bed down. He even avoided the sheep farmers watchful over new born lambs at the height of their busiest season as he flanked Co Tyrone farmlands. No one is sure how he managed it, perhaps the big dog was looking for his old family after being handed to the pound, maybe he missed the dog brother he had been separated from. He could have had no idea where he was setting off from, he had no map and no logical understanding of the route to take - just a cold, wet nose nose that guided him all the way back to a place he once thought of as home. All the while he had an army of dog lovers trying to find him and reunite him with his new owner who was desperate to bring him home. But they couldn't find him after his mega journey Charity Lost Paws claimed the dog's 'instinct' guided him home New owner Nigel, a photographer from Dungannon, Co Tyrone, explained: "I'm sitting here looking at him and I cannot believe he's home. We had literally driven from the dog pound to my home when he bolted. I'd met Cooper a few days before in the hope he'd be good company for my Golden Retriever Molly. I felt she'd love a dog companion and found Cooper and his brother George in a dog pound. I paid his rehoming fee and we went home for a new start. He literally jumped over Holly, prized the car door open enough to get past me and ran for it. The poor boy had no idea where he was and he was in the wind. I tried to chase after him but he was gone in an instant - so then the search was on. I was determined not to give up on him and with the help of Lost Paws NI, co-ordinated searches, sightings, social media and sheer determination got us there in the end. A frantic search started, but the pup knew where he was heading "Just as I was about to do a big story with DogsLive asking more people to look out for Cooper, I got a call from Lost Paws NI to say a member of the public had reported seeing him in the Tobermore area, back to where he had started all those weeks ago. In the end all we had to do was follow a dog's nose home to familiar surroundings. If only we'd known, we could have saved big Cooper all that anxiety. Hopefully now he is home for good but I've some added precautions in place if he ever feels the need to bolt again. He has been through a lot. Instinct took him back to a place he was familiar with. How he did it, I'll never know but he managed it. No food, no shelter, no help, just dogged determination and that incredible nose. It seems incredible that he was able to do this - but dogs are incredible and that's what we work to hard to help them every day. We are absolutely delighted to have been part of his rescue and a story that will live on in his family for generations to come. You are the reason why we exist and why we keep going. After being surrendered to the dog pound by his family, his days in kennels came to an end when he was rehomed to live with a new doggie sister and a devoted new owner. But moments after meeting his new roomie, Molly, Cooper bolted from the car and spent the next 27 days on the run, heading more than 40 miles right back to his old stomping ground.
