None the less the gene responsible for blue in the GSD is the D gene. Again, blue is a dilution of black. Therefore blue GSD are unable to produce any black on the dog. Every where traditionally seen black is, is blue with the dog has the D gene. Including the nose leather, eye rims, lips, and paw pads will all be a dark shade of blue and not black. When puppies are young their eyes appear to be very brilliant blue as all puppies are born with blue eyes but they do change over to a light yellow wolf eye or even to an amber orange eye as they mature. In my German Shepherds, I've had blue "black and tans", blue sables, and blue blacks. Blue puppies are very attractive. .However, when adult, it can be very hard to tell the difference between a blue and another colored dog in the German Shepherd and Belgian Malinois breed. The blue Dutch Shepherd is much more noticable. These dogs are as healthy and long lived as any of my dogs. The two photos immediately below show two German Shepherd littermates. Both are female. The blue puppy is a blue sable, while the other pup is a traditional black and tan. The Dutch Shepherd blue brindle coat coloring can be just as striking as the gold brindle. The UKC breed standard the Dutch Shepherd is not an AKC breed calls for coat colorings of "Brindle, on either brown or gray ground", so the blue which is really gray is acceptable in conformation showing. We all agreed that it was time for him to see a specialist. We took him to Metropolitan as an emergency patient. It turns out we were all in for a shock at what this poor dog was enduring. Dash had probably been living with bladder stones for so long that they had completely scarred his urethra. It was at the point where a catheter could not pass through from all the scar tissue. His bladder had swelled to the size of a grapefruit due to his inability to relieve himself. There was only one choice — a very drastic surgery to bypass the scar tissue. They made a completely new urine passage for him so he could finally use the bathroom like a normal dog. It is truly incredible! Dash was now able to go to the bathroom on his own! He seemed like a whole new dog that was comfortable for the first time in years. A flip had switched and he was happy, playful and running around! After months of recovering from both surgeries, his foster family could not let him go. His new name is Fred, he has another English Bulldog sibling, and he could not be living a more happy and fulfilling life. The shade of the coat doesn't have anything to do with which of the base colours will come out. You could end up with a litter that are all black, a litter that are all chocolate or some other combination that can include all three colours. It depends on the two dogs' genetics. When you're mixing two breeds together, it's a whole lot less predictable. In goldens, I assume you normally only have yellow genes, although the odd black allele will pop up from time to time, throwing a black GR. But how that would demonstrate when combined with the Labrador genes is beyond my knowledge. I would guess that, since the Lab bitch is chocolate and therefore not carrying any black genes, the pups would likely be a mix of yellow and chocolate, but that's only a hunch.
