First Trip to the Groomer! Once your pup has been fully vaccinated around weeks it is time for their first trip to the groomer! Even if you do not want your pup to receive a full groom at this time, we think it is very important to take your pup to the groomer anyway. Even if it is just for a quick bath and blow-dry, the earlier you can expose them to this practice, the more likely they are to acclimate to it without fear. We suggest taking your pup to the groomer every weeks for a professional bath and blow-dry. It is important to go with photos in mind of what you would like your pooch to look like. If you prefer a longer coat, remember that your upkeep is going to be much greater! Your groomer will be able to suggest to you different clipping options best suited for you and your Bernedoodle. Professional grooming should be done every weeks, with regular at-home maintenance in between. They are a mixed breed, so their coat is not as standardized as other breeds. They may inherit genes from either of their parents, which will affect their coat. In general, Bernedoodle will need to be brushed two to three times a week. These sessions will help keep their fur sleek and free from tangles. With the right brush, you can often remove much of the dirt and debris during these brushing sessions, which will elongate the time they need between baths. You can start these at-home sessions as soon as you bring your puppy home. They may not need them quite as much as this young age. But starting new will make them more accepting of the brush later. Puppies are very adaptable and will become used to whatever they are around, including grooming. You should also get your puppy used to having their feet handled, as this is important for nail clipping. Do the same with their ears, as they will likely need to be cleaned every few months or so. Most Bernedoodles will need professional grooming and a haircut every two to three months. Many of them do not shed, so this haircut is essential to their overall wellbeing. Waiting to get their rabies vaccination at this time often makes the most sense. We recommend getting your puppy to a groomer as soon as their vaccinations are complete. The earlier they start going to a groomer, the more comfortable they will be. Should you use grooming clippers to shave your dog down when it gets hot? It depends on their coat type. If your dog has a double coat, it is not recommended to shave them during the summer. A double-coat works by having a soft, insulating layer underneath a waterproof layer. If you shave them, these two layers will be at the same level. The insulating layer will not be protected from the elements, and neither will your dog. While a double-coat may seem thick, it is designed to keep the dog cool during the summer and warm during the winter. A Poodle does not have a double-coat, so they are less able to regulate their body temperature. We recommend trimming Poodle-like coats down in the summer months and then keeping them longer in the winter. For dogs with a Poodle-like coat, you can technically cut it down as much as you want. You could completely shave the dog, and the fur would still grow back fine. However, dogs with double coats should not be shaved down to their undercoat. However, they cannot be shaved down any considerable amount. Be sure to speak to a professional that has experience with these canines. Puppies usually cost less because they are smaller. It takes the groomer less time to groom them, and they can be handled more efficiently. However, you can expect your costs to increase as they age. Either way, it is vital that you examine your own lifestyle, needs and wants to see if a golden is right for you. And, conversely, you need to evaluate if you can meet the needs of a golden retriever. If you can, we can attest to the fact that owning a golden is one of the most rewarding experiences you will ever have! They are addicting and people seldom have just one in their lifetimes. Here are a few things to consider: Size Goldens are medium to large sized animals. The standard size for males range from 23 — 24 inches at the shoulder and weigh proportionally from pounds. Females stand around .They normally possess extremely active tails making clean sweeps of coffee and end tables. Quite simply they need room. Uncluttered houses are a must! A fenced in yard is especially important in providing the dog enough exercise. Another option is a fenced dog park or walking trail. You must have a plan to give your golden enough exercise on a daily basis or both of you will be miserable. The younger the golden, the more exercise they generally need. Velcro Dog Goldens are faithful companions. They are usually always by your side, many will follow you from room to room. They will lie in the kitchen while you cook and at your feet while you watch TV. They must be near their humans to be happy. Health Goldens are prone to allergies, skin problems, cancer and hypothyroidism and you may have to spend a fair amount on vet care over the life of a golden. Common inherited health issues are hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, various eye problems and heart disease. That is relatively cheap compared to if your dog has a health issue and requires veterinary care which today runs as much as human health care. Setting aside a monthly amount for a future emergency is a must. There are also quality pet insurance programs available. Goldens must be fed a high quality premium food to prevent costly skin problems — which means you will not be able to buy your food at the grocery or discount store — and will have to make a special trip to the pet supply store. There are other expenses such as toys, collars and leashes, brushes, shampoos and soft cozy beds. A well cared for dog, like its human counterpart, is happier with regular checkups and daily care. Grooming Goldens can be adequately groomed at home without expensive equipment. They Are High Energy A Golden needs a daily amount of exercise in order to burn off all that high energy. Once you introduce a Golden to water you will never get them out. They are always up for a game of fetch and love to chase anything, including squirrels. A Golden Retriever will not exercise without you, even if you have a big yard and let them out by themselves they will stand by the door waiting for you to go with them. If you are considering a Golden Retriever puppy, expect them to be high energy, and not to calm down until the age of two or three. Remember that male dogs mature slower than females, and a Golden Retriever, in general, remains more puppy-like and matures slower than other dog breeds. You will find them doing laps inside your house, and outside as well. People refer to this as the puppy zoomies. A sudden burst of energy! Believe me, once you witness it you will know what I mean. They romp and jump with full energy and can easily knock a person over. If you have small children, supervision is a must. I have been on the receiving end of a Golden Retriever knock down a few times. If you are considering a Golden Retriever, then you need to set aside hours a day of exercise for them, so they do not get bored and become destructive. Along with exercise, they need mental stimulation. They are easily trained and love to please their owners. If you enjoy your alone time, this is not the breed for you, but if you love to have a furry best friend always by your side then you should consider a Golden. Goldens love to spend time with their humans and are always eager to do anything with you. Wherever you go, they will follow, even to the bathroom. They are very intuitive to your feelings and can sense when you are sick, or unhappy, and will do everything they can to comfort you. If you own a Golden you know that even after you vacuum you will find hair everywhere. Golden Retrievers shed heavily twice a year Spring and Fall , and moderately throughout the rest of the year. As a Golden owner, you will own quite a few lint brushes and a really good vacuum. You might even find yourself wearing the same colour clothes as your dog to disguise the dog hair. If you are a neat freak, this may not be the dog for you. They even do it with a smile on their face. When I walk my dog Ellie in the rain, she always comes inside and jumps on the couch and slides back and forth on it to dry off. This is after I have towelled dried her off outside. Did you just do the laundry? Well then expect them to grab those nice clean socks of yours and run around the house with them. You may have guests in the house and your dog will come running down the stairs with your underwear in their mouth, always good for an embarrassing laugh. Your Yard Will Have A Collection Of Sticks Goldens love to carry things in their mouth, and soon your front and backyard will have a collection of sticks and whatever else your dog decides to bring back from their daily walk. My Ellie has brought back so many sticks, and big rocks as well that I have had to get rid of quite a few of them. Now we just have 3 or 4 sticks in the backyard and front yard for her to chew on. Watch out when you walk a Golden in your neighbourhood because they will pick up anything they can find such as socks, gloves, tennis balls, and toys. We have a collection of tennis balls in the backyard that Ellie has found throughout our neighbourhood and on our walking trail. Goldens are extroverts and very social. They enjoy meeting new people and making friends with everyone they meet. They need and crave human companionship, this is not the type of dog that you can leave home alone for long periods of time. If left alone too long, they will get bored and destructive, and become depressed. A Golden Retriever will have no problem with walking up to a stranger to say hi and get petted. They will make it seem like they never get any attention at home. They are definitely not shy. Personally, I have met and gotten to know so many people because of my dog Ellie. Never being bored may sound like a good thing, but at times you will pray for boring. Goldens have a way of easily getting themselves into trouble and keeping you on your toes. You may find yourself chasing them around the house for those clean socks they stole out of the laundry, or stopping them from eating food off of your plate, or trying to stop them from digging in the backyard. No matter what, they will always find a way to make you laugh. My Ellie tries to outsmart us, and oftentimes she does. For instance when we go walking she knows that she gets a treat every time she pees, something that we did since she was a puppy and she has tried to do a fake pee in order to get a treat. My dog will eat anything and everything. As a dog owner, this is very frustrating. When you are out walking your dog, and your dog will eat anything off the ground and it is almost always bad for them. So many times my dog has eaten something questionable, and no matter what you do it happens so fast. Goldens love food, and you really have to watch what they eat, as they can easily become overweight. They will sit and stare at you while you are eating, hoping that you will give them something, or that something will fall on the floor for them. It is hard not to give in to their sad puppy dog eyes, but keeping them at an ideal weight will keep them healthier and they will live longer. They Need Regular Grooming In order to keep a Golden looking their best, they need to be groomed regularly. Brushing should be done on a daily basis to prevent any mats and tangles, and to keep the coat looking clean and healthy. Brushing regularly will also help to reduce some of the shedding. Bathing should be done regularly as well to keep a Golden clean and smelling good. Goldens have floppy ears which can be prone to ear infections, so ears should be cleaned regularly, and nails trimmed as well. It is never recommended to shave a Golden , but their coat can be trimmed to keep them looking neat. The grooming requirements of a Golden Retriever may be more demanding than that of other dogs, but it is not difficult and can easily be done by the owner at home. Most owners love this breed so much that they own more than one. They are loving and loyal to their family, and everyone they meet. You will find that your phone will have more pictures of your dog than anything else, and you will constantly be telling stories of your dog to other people. You will be a very proud owner. Colors and Fur Our Premier Bernedoodles will be traditional tri-color much like a Bernese Mountain Dog , abstract tricolor similar to a traditional tricolor with less white in the face , sable similar to a traditional tri-color but has more reddish-browns due to the poodle genetics we use , phantom, merle, merle tricolor, or bi-colored brown and white, black and white, or shades thereof. Our F1b's will consist of black and whites, traditional tricolors, abstract tricolors, and lots of variable brown and reddish brown and whites. Color never reflects temperament and personality so usually most people don't really care too much what color they are. They are all really beautiful. Although there's variation due to the hybrid vigor present as a result of the recombination of genes in many arrays, there is definitely a bernedoodle appearance that is fairly consistent. If you let the hair grow, they will look like big shaggy dogs that you can't help but to give a big hug to. And they enjoy every minute of it! Our Premier Bernedoodles will tend to have wavy curly coats due to the coat types we require in our bernese mountain dogs which helps to minimize or eliminate shedding.We do make sure that our standard poodles do not carry the genetic marker known as the "Improper Coat" allele or IC for short. Wavy curly coats do require a little more grooming as compared to straight, but many, straight coats shed more.Although they are considered to be large, they don't act like a large dog in the house. They are generally very careful and calm natured as adults however they do have some puppy-fun energy thru the puppyhood stages and thru 3 years of age. They love people and other pets! We do thorough genetic testing of our adults that we use in our breeding program to assure that you are purchasing the healthiest of bernedoodle puppies. Our Bernese mountain dogs come from very long-lived blood lines in Western Europe and these longer lifespans is one of the many reasons we obtain our Berners from several specific populations known for their longevity. Obviously we can't guarantee lifespan as there are many variables outside of our control not to mention, environment, stress, climate, food, etc. But track record seems to show a longer lifespan. What's the Difference? An F1b is an F1 standard Bernedoodle backcrossed to a standard poodle or could be a backcross to a Bernese mountain dog but we generally use the poodle as the backcross. An F1bb is an F1b standard Bernedoodle backcrossed to a standard poodle. Behaviorally they are all very similar with the F1b and F1bb's being slightly smaller than our F1 standards and tend to have slightly curlier coats to a tight wave. They have been communicating with their siblings for the past 8 weeks using their mouth. During their normal daily interactions, you will occasionally hear a loud "yelp" in response to one biting another too hard. This yelp usually ends the mouthing behavior. Now puppies have fur and people generally do not. When you bring your bernedoodle home, they will likely display some degree of mouthing behavior toward their human family. This will usually stop this behavior. We then redirect their desire to mouth to something more appropriate like a chew toy and after a few seconds of cooperating we praise them. Bailey usually sleeps on the floor near the sliding porch doors in our bedroom because it is cooler. We have a wetland which abuts our property so the yard is pretty big by Seattle standards. He has lots of energy, goofy and totally a pleasure to have around and part of our family. He carries himself in such a way that you are certain he is royalty, yet he is very silly behind closed doors. He is very athletic; he loves to swim, hike, chase squirrels and birds. Puk can run on his hind legs while chasing a squirrel that is running along the fence. My favorite thing about Puk is his ability to adjust his energy levels with ours. If we are out hiking or swimming he is giving it his all, but if we are having a lazy day he is perfectly content to lay and cuddle with you. He is very sweet natured and loves his family fiercely. His hair is a mix of curly to wavy and is the softest, silkiest fur to touch. He does not shed at all. When he is not on an adventure or taking a nap with me, he is out in the backyard playing with his brothers. He weighs 95 lbs. He meets other dogs on a regular basis and promptly plays with them all. His groomer has a 10 lb. Yorkie and a friend of mine has a lb. Irish wolfhound. There are various dogs we know that fall within that range, and Magic playfully engages with them all with no reservation. He is just as happy meeting new people. I have lost count of the number of people who have told me they are afraid of big dogs, but somehow Magic is different. I find it heartwarming that my big, goofy, often clumsy clown is remarkably gentle with children. I call him my Velcro pup, since he tends to be by my side as much as he can. In him I have a constant companion. He accompanies me from room to room as I finish housework — it does make changing the bed linens challenging! He sits by my side leaning on me while I work and sticks close to me outdoors. And he always loves to cuddle. When I return from work, I invariably find Magic has placed some article of my clothing along with a shoe or boot of mine on the windowsill where he rests his chin, as he waits for me. He is a big boy and weighs 95 lbs. His coat is wavy with very little shedding, does not mat and is easy to comb. When comparing the two coats the curly coat will almost certainly shed less than the wavy coat and may be more suitable for allergy sufferers. Standard Bernedoodle Temperament With the bernedoodle being a combination of two different breeds, it is common to see traits from both sides of the breeds. You will certainly see the intelligence and ease of training from the poodle side and the affectionate, loving Bernese Mountain Dog trait.
