Fido products are expensive, but I find them very good and this is what I use on the puppies, and my own dogs. Some vets will advocate regular plucking, others may suggest trimming the hair, but regardless, keeping the hair minimal, and the ears clean, with the use of an ear cleanser or a drying agent will reduce the risk of problems. You pop the solution into each ear and massage it for seconds and then wipe it out with a tissue — never use ear buds! Check with your vet for tips on hair removal and which solution to use. Your dogs nails should be done each time they get their coat trimmed and this is a service most dog groomers usually do as part of their clip. If you choose to do this, be sure to get your groomer, or your vet to show you how to trim the nails correctly. Grooming How frequently you choose to get your dog clipped will depend on lifestyle, how long you want their coat to be and, your regular maintenance regimes. Body the body can be trimmed to whatever length suits the lifestyle. Tail should be evened up. If the body is left long, the tummy can be trimmed shorter, or even shaved in summer to keep the dog cool. Trim the hair between the pads, so the pads touch the ground. Trim the nails. Taper the hind quarters to the tail gradually. Brush and trim the tail to a natural length, and trim underneath. Private Parts Shave or trim close the dogs private area to keep clean and free from matting and any dags. While the adult coat is establishing, you will need to brush multiple times a week, and I find this the best time to give your pet his first trim. It will be difficult to keep up with the matting in the longer coat, but with a trim, it is very manageable, and the beauty of the adult coat is better realized. Once your dog gets to 12 to 14 months, the adult coat will be fully established, and this is the coat you can expect to work with for your dog's adult life. I find that the picture to the right will help to clarify the instructions you will need to convey for your dog's face. It is best to print this picture and take it with you to the groomer. A three-fourths inch blade don't go shorter than one-half inch will keep your dog's coat nice and full but give a smooth consistent length all over. If you like your dogs coat longer, your groomer should have a guard they can use to achieve this. The legs are typically just a little longer than the rest of the coat if you trim the coat to three-fourths inch. FEET: The feet will need a "slipper" cut to achieve the floppy, full leg look. The leg will look like a column. TAIL: The tail needs to be de-matted and trimmed. It is also important to have the hair removed, either trimmed or pulled, inside the dog's ears. Labradoodle haircuts Although Labradoodle grooming is no small task, with our help it can be an easier one! The Labradoodle is one of the most beloved and recognizable pet pups in the world today. These happy-go-lucky and loving pups have endeared themselves to star-studded celebrities and ordinary families from all walks of life all around the globe. But their hair is something that every owner has to get to grips with. Do Labradoodles Need Grooming? Despite what many people believe and expect, not all Labradoodle dogs are non-shedding. Some Labradoodles can shed quite a lot. And all Labradoodles, whether they shed or not, need weekly or twice-weekly brushing and more detailed grooming every few months. In fact, the less your Labradoodle sheds, the more brushing and grooming your dog is likely to need as we will explain in later sections here. Labradoodles tend to be high-energy, athletic dogs who love to run and play and swim and sometimes roll in very stinky things. For these reasons, you may find yourself needing to bathe, brush and groom your dog with greater frequency after play sessions or outings. Labradoodles are a hybrid dog with one Labrador Retriever parent and one Poodle parent. These two dogs have very different coat types. Poodle Coat The Poodle coat is very dense and curly, but it is single layer i. For some people who are very sensitive to pet dander, Poodles can be a potentially good pet dog choice. The coast is also water repellent on the top layer, and soft and insulating on the under layer. Labs shed year-round. Labradoodle Coats If your Labradoodle inherits more genetic influence from the Poodle parent, the coat is likely to be closer to single layer, dense, thick, curly and mostly non-shedding. This is when you will find out for sure what type of coat your Labradoodle has inherited and how much grooming you will need to do. For high-shedding Labradoodles, you may want to increase this frequency during seasonal sheds. Labradoodles with fleece or wool coats more of the Poodle influence may not require any grooming adjustments at all. How to Groom a Labradoodle These are the recommended steps to do a basic at-home Labradoodle grooming session. It can take a few tries to get the hang of using the undercoat rake, especially because this grooming tool can look kind of scary at first glance. Spritz your dog with detangling spray. If you find tangles as you brush, you can stop and spritz on a bit more detangler to help work them out easily. Brush your dog with the slicker brush. Different groomers have different approaches for grooming dogs with thick coats like the Labradoodle. Continue brushing section by section in this way, stopping to work out tangles as you find them and then continuing on. The comb is the tool that will help you detect smaller tangles that you may have missed with the slicker brush. If you find additional tangles, stop and spritz a bit more detangler and work them out with the slicker brush. Then run the comb over the area one final time to be sure the tangle is gone. This is definitely a personal choice. Most groomers are happy to help in this area. Do any additional maintenance tasks as needed. Labradoodle Grooming Tools When you are just starting out and building your Labradoodle grooming toolkit, you will want to be sure you have these basics—recommended by Labradoodle breeders and professional groomers. This highly rated and popular undercoat rake represents an investment, but it is durable and solid and really gets the job done. Slicker Brushes for Labradoodles A good slicker brush will help you locate tangles and mats, and work them out without causing any discomfort to your pup. For Labradoodles, finding a long-pin brush with angled pins like one of these is key to grooming success. This popular long-pin, angled-pin, large slicker brush is great for grooming all the way down to the undercoat. Once your dog grows up, you may want to use the large brush on the main body coat and a medium brush on the legs and facial areas. This popular slicker brush has a feature many grooming-intensive dog owners just love: a self-cleaning button. One push of the button ejects all the hair trapped in the tines. Labradoodle Comb Labradoodles tend to have such thick coats that it can be easy to miss smaller tangles and mats. All pins have rounded tips for skin safety. This lovely, soft, human-grade detangling spray is made from all natural ingredients and is specifically pH balanced for canine skin. Both for its conditioning effect and its ability to repel debris. You can also use them to trim ear hair, paw hair and hair around the hind quarters. This scissor set has rounded ends for safety and surgical-quality stainless steel construction. Establish a routine that you will follow through with or you will end up with a puppy with nails that may rip or cause problems walking properly, ears that have infections, and coats that are severely matted to the skin and cause severe discomfort for your dog. These are the areas that are most prone to matting. Part the hair and brush from the base of the coat in small sections. Many people only brush the surface of the coat and do not realize the dog is matting very badly next to the skin. Remember, if you cannot maintain basic brushing and grooming on your own, then you will need to budget for using a professional groomer. You should still try to clip nails and clean ears weekly at home, and give your dog a brushing at least once a week. BATHING When you groom your puppy or dog, you will want them to have a clean coat so your scissors and clipper blades work efficiently and do not wear down more quickly. Here are some general, simple tips for basic labradoodle grooming when doing your doodle at home. Eyes: Your Labradoodle should always be able to see well and not have hair hanging and restricting vision or growing up and into the eyes from the bridge of the nose! Using blunt tipped scissors, trim the hair over the bridge of nose and in between eyes so vision is not obstructed. Hair that hangs over the eyes should be trimmed neatly across the brow blending down into the sides of the face. If your dog gets eye gunk, use eye wipes every few days to keep them clean. A Labradoodle with long ear hair does NOT look like the standard for the Labradoodle, it looks more like a Cocker spaniel. Shape the ears and blend hair neatly into the top of the head. This will help prevent infections. You can use a clipper with 10 blade for a good length in this area. If the canal has a lot of hair inside, you will need to pluck it out in very small amounts to prevent irritation. Clean ear canal with solution and then use ear powder to eliminate moisture. Paws: Trim paws in a nicely rounded shape so that hair does not hang over the paw and cannot be walked on. Completely clip hair from in between pads on bottom of feet. This is most easily done with an electric clipper and a 30 blade. Keeping the paws shaped nicely will aid in less debris attaching to feet when outside and being drug into your home. Long muzzle hair results in beards that drip with water every time your dog gets a drink. The hair on the sides of the muzzle should be even with the bottom of the lower jaw. This is an area of the body we frequently see with matting. Hair is left to grow and grow and GROW and you not realize it is severely matting close to the tail. This helps prevent matting and urine or feces from building up on the coat when your dog uses the bathroom. Body: If you like a longer coat, more brushing and maintenance will be required. It was the crossbreed hybrid combination of the Labrador Retriever and the Standard Poodle. It was spurred on by the fact that even though the Labrador was an immensely popular breed, it had one negative traitintense shedding. It was also prone to several inherent problems in the breed, the most prevalent being hip dysplasia. From the beginning the world was in love. Not only did the crossbreed hybrid not shed, those with allergies did not react, and with the now in place crossbreed hybrid vigor, the dog was far healthier and robust. This crossbreed hybrid had a mercurial rise to the top spanning the world over. Somewhere around the crossbreed hybrid of the Goldendoodle came to be. In a celebrities Goldendoodle made the cover of Life Magazine, making it the new poster child of the doodles. The ensuing article espoused the virtues of the Goldendoodle and even went so far as to suggest it as perhaps the ultimate breed ever! Goldendoodles have now eclipsed the original Labradoodle in popularity. Many customers ask why, and what the differences are. To this, my answer is, not much. There is a prevailing assumption that the Labradoodle will have a "longer" muzzle then the Goldendoodle. This, I believe , is because many people think of the narrow face of the American Field Lab and associate that with the offspring. This is a common misconception and the reason is easy to explain. But in order to do so, we have to take a closer look at the Standard Poodle. The Standard Poodle doesn't get a very fair shake for the most part. Perhaps this is due to many people automatically associating the poodle with the mini version or the toy. Though many poodles in these sizes are wonderful dogs, everyone knows someone who had a bad experience with these versions or had a direct relationship with one that didn't go well. That said, the Standard Poodle is a fantastic dog thru and thru. But unless you've experienced one firsthand you may not realize that these dogs are unbelievably affectionate, loyal and loving. My next sentence I will say with a bit of trepidation for fear of offending some, but it is necessary to illustrate a point. Those that do not have firsthand experience with these dogs will be very unaware of what I am to speak of next. The haircut that most associate poodles within my opinion--makes them look horrible. But that doesn't have to be the case! In fact, with the proper haircut, to the casual observer they are easily mistaken for doodles. What most are use to seeing is the "show cut" for poodles which necessitates the shaving of the muzzle, around the eyes and brow and a bit of a pompadour on the head. I believe this makes them look quite terrible! The difference between a poodle with a full face and a shaved face is monumental. We've gone into this long winded explanation because I often get the statement "we want a doodle that looks more like the retriever then the poodle", or, "we like Goldendoodles over Labradoodles because they look more like the retriever side rather then the poodle". This is all hogwash. Either type of doodle can look "off" and not anything like "itself" when it doesn't have its proper "teddy-bear cut". Both versions will look like they have a much longer, skinnier snout if its shaved. Conversely, when grown in they both look full, round, and thicker--an actual illusion that is quite effective in both doodles and poodle. About Bliss Kennels Every farm must have a dog and we have never been an exception. From onwards we have always had at least one if not two or three. Since our family has such a love for dogs, we collectively decided to start breeding them. Also, family of ours in Southern Illinois have been successfully breeding crossbreeds hybrids for the last ten years and this provided further motivation and impetus. With the popularity of the Labrador retriever and the overwhelming rise in the demand for the crossbreed hybrid mix of the Lab and the Standard Poodle we decided to start there with the "Labradoodle". Taking it a step further is the "Goldendoodle", which is a crossbreed hybrid between a Standard Poodle and a Golden Retriever. Since the family already had a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel as a house dog and thought so highly of it, coupled with the rapid increase in this dogs popularity over the last 8 years we elected to breed them as well. The farm has been active in our family for 40 years and over that time we have birthed literally thousands of animals ranging from cows to cats and everything in between. Though our days of 30 heads of cattle, families of pigs, and horses and goats roaming the fields is gone, we still have a nice menagerie of animals.

Practice extinction conditioning: if your dog begs, ignore it completely. Consider giving your dog a toy or treat to keep it busy just before you sit down for dinner. If you get through dinner without your dog begging or trying to steal food, reward him afterwards with a treat and positive reinforcement. If the problem persists, avoid having any food out in front of it, and consider restricting its access to the kitchen using baby gates. If your Boxer barks excessively at the doorbell or phone, try training it to go to a designated area whenever it hears that particular sound. Repeat this process to teach it what the word means. Gradually set the mat farther away from the dog before giving the command as it begins to understand what the word means. Eventually, substitute the command word for the sound entirely, and be sure to offer plenty of positive reinforcement when your dog goes to its mat at the sound of the doorbell or knock. Increasing and varying its exercise if your Boxer is acting up in a non-aggressive way. Just letting a Boxer outside to use the bathroom is not sufficient exercise. It needs one to two hours a day of brisk exercise that involves both physical and mental exertion. If your Boxer starts to act up or act aggressively, such as when passing another dog on a walk, redirect its attention. Give the leash a tug to let your dog know it's time to move on, especially if it didn't respond to your verbal command and pointing. Boxers are energetic dogs and love to jump, but you should never let your dog jump on you or other people. When your dog jumps, do you best to completely ignore its behavior. Not giving your Boxer any attention at all is more of a punishment than yelling or hitting it, and will teach it that jumping is unacceptable behavior. Consider the amount of exercise it gets and increase or vary if necessary. Talk to your vet or local humane society about finding a reputable trainer. Contact your local pet store and ask if they have dog training classes. Ask if they have classes for dogs and their owners so you can learn more about how to curb aggressive behavior. When a Boxer Dog Won't Listen Stubborn and Strong Willed Boxers Overview It can be very frustrating and distracting to the entire household if a Boxer puppy or older adult dog is not listening to his owner. Many owners assume that their dog will naturally and instinctively listen to them; however, this is not always so. And when a Boxer dog stubbornly disregards you, this can affect everything from being able to properly walk your dog, having him eat where you wish, being able to groom him, knowing he will come when you call and even such things as him moving out of the way when you want to sit on the sofa. With the Boxer being a good sized dog typically 55 to 70 lbs. In many cases, a Boxer that does not listen believes that he is in charge and it is an issue that will not fix itself. Every pack has a leader. This is the Alpha. It can be no other way. In households with more than 1 adult human, there can be shared leaders. Those that fall under the Alpha are the Betas. When a Boxer dog understands proper hierarchy, he is a Beta. And as such, due to strong canine instinct, that Boxer will always listen to his human. However, there are many things that can go wrong. Proper hierarchy, with the dog listening to his human is not a given. In either of these 2 cases, the Boxer will not listen to his owners. Notes Regarding Age Before you take on the training needed so that your stubborn Boxer will start listening to you, it is important to take note of some age related scenarios. Puppies — Teaching hierarchy takes time and you cannot expect a new puppy to understand his place during his first couple of months in the house. Most puppies have limited focus, bouncing from one thing to another. Curiosity and exploration is high. Memory is limited. Many Boxer puppies will appear to listen from Day 1, however in most cases this is a matter of the pup responding to your vocalizations in a search for comfort. It will be important to follow hierarchy guidelines so that they are understood during the puppy stage, leading to having an adult Boxer that listens well. Any bad habits established at a young age can become very ingrained. It is much easier to teach correct behavior and action to begin with, as opposed to correcting it later. Seniors — As a Boxer dog ages, it is common for him to experience decreased vision and hearing. Particularly with decreased hearing, this can be misinterpreted as the dog developing behavior of not listening any longer. Some signs of hearing loss include not responding to sudden noises door slamming, hand clapping, etc. Boxers, starting at the age of 8 or 9 years old, should be receiving twice-per-year geriatric veterinarian health checks and part of this will be both vision and hearing tests. Do be sure to have such things ruled out before taking any steps to train your Boxer to listen to you. Signs that a Boxer is Dominant Vs Lack of Command Comprehension When a dog does not listen to his owners, it comes down to 1 of 2 elements: 1. Lack of Command Comprehension. A Boxer may very well see you as his leader, however may not listen because he does not understand what is requested of him. This would then be a matter of using a more effective training technique for teaching commands and heeling. It will be important to obtain a solid, reputable training guide in order to prep yourself as a trainer and create a conducive learning environment. If proper hierarchy is there, you only need to follow effective training techniques to have success. A Boxer is Dominant. As we touched on, if a Boxer does not see his human as his leader, he has no reason to listen. He will do as he pleases and while he appreciates his connection to his humans, he sees them as equals and not as leaders. He may appear to listen, however he is essentially listening only when he wishes, and particularly only when he perceives that doing so is in his best interest. Signs of a dominant dog include: When you open the door, he rushes past you to run outside before you exit Running away and not stopping when you call out his name Jumping up on you even if you order him to get down Taking over furniture and not moving out of the way when you want to sit down When being let off leash outside, running away quickly without listening to a verbal cue from you that he is allowed to explore When on leash for his daily walk, the Boxer walks ahead of you, pulling on the leash and essentially leading the way Jumping on or pestering guests, not listening to you to leave them alone Insistence on sleeping in your bed Only listening to command some of the time or not at all 4 Steps to Take for Your Boxer Dog to Listen to You This all boils down to needing to teach a Boxer why he should listen to you. He has no concept that you pay the rent, buy him his food and that you spend time reading articles here in an effort to take better care of him. He is not purposefully being defiant; he simply does not know why such a thing is even expected of him. So, what will automatically make a Boxer dog listen? As touched on above, canine instinct dictates that obedience is given to whomever he sees as his leader. Strong leaders are simply not ignored. Such a thing cannot happen in the canine world. Listening to a leader is an automatic response. And doing so actually creates a more content dog. When a dog takes on the Alpha role or if he sees his human as a weak leader, this puts a lot of stress and responsibility on that dog. He takes his place as Beta, listens well and all is right with the world. It is important to note that ensuring your proper place as leader can and should be done in a loving way. You will be a caring, kind and fair leader. Nothing about this is harsh and expecting your Boxer to listen to you is not only appropriate, it is the path to a balanced, happy household. The rules of getting a Boxer puppy or dog to listen are not that difficult; the element that many owners do have is consistency. Appearing to be wavering will be taken as a sign of weakness and self-doubt. This only works if everyone in the household is on board and if these rules are followed all of the time. Canines know that food equals survival. When humans talk about basic survival being food, clothing, shelter and fire, with dogs it is just food. If your Boxer is not listening to you, chances are that he has zero idea that it is you who provides his food. While other guidelines are helpful in getting a dog to listen and show obedience, without this one, it will be a failure. Food, beyond doubt, is the 1 element. It is recommended that all humans in the household take turns in feeding the Boxer his meals and snacks. If only one person takes charge of this, the Boxer may see just that person as his leader and will listen to him, but be disobedient to others. Follow the rules for any food that is given; both meals and snacks. Vary the time that you have him hold. For at least 1 meal of the day, make sure that your Boxer sees that you eat first. A dog only needs to see his human begin eating do not make him watch you eat the entire meal. You will want to prepare both your meal and his. You then place his bowl where he cannot reach it. Sit at the table. When your Boxer is looking at you, take several bites. Ignore any barking , jumping, begging or whining. The correlation we touched on earlier in regard to a Boxer rushing out of the house first and also being a dog that does not listen is crucial in understanding how to fix the obedience issue. Through the eyes of a canine, the house is his den. It is his safe place, one to relax with his pack and defend from outsiders. And there is one major rule in regard to the den: The leader of it has the privilege to enter it and exit it first. His Betas then follow him. How to fix this: Take charge of this by being the one to enter and exit first. It is recommended to: 1. Within a few feet of the door, command your Boxer to 'Sit'. If your boxer misbehaves by being overactive, refusing to obey a known command, etc, it is important that they not be allowed to get away with the undesirable behavior. As always, removing your attention is a great way to give your boxer an opportunity to calm down and stop the undesirable behavior and discipline your boxer. Socialize With People The average boxer is extremely good with their family. Boxers are especially known for being wonderful with children. They tend to be patient, tolerant, and protective of their family. On the other hand, when it comes to strangers, boxers are not necessarily as likely to get along well unless they are well-socialized from an early age. Boxers are naturally protective, and they often excel in attack work and as home and personal protection dogs. Introduce your boxer to new people frequently throughout their life. If your boxer shows aggression inappropriately, take your boxer out of the situation and calm them down by crating or tethering them. Boxers that show extreme aggression towards new people despite socialization will benefit from a certified trainer or animal behaviorist. Never punish a boxer for showing aggression by yelling at them, striking them, or handling them roughly. This kind of behavior is most likely to result in an escalation of the negative behavior since your boxer will learn that there really is something to be feared from the new person. Generally, the best way to get a boxer to accept new people is to give them lots of positive reinforcement like affection and plenty of treats when there are new people nearby. Historically, boxers were bred to hunt big game like bear, wild boar, and bison. Boxers also were used for dog fighting until this activity was made illegal. They have also served as cattle dogs. This means that boxers may sometimes show prey drive towards large animals like livestock and aggression towards other dogs. Boxers are less likely to behave inappropriately with livestock or other dogs when they are socialized with them from a young age. However, aggression can come out even in well-socialized dogs. It is always best to socialize boxers with other animals to set them up for success in preventing prey drive from coming out and causing aggressive behavior. For boxers that do develop aggression towards other dogs or animals despite socialization, self-control training is extremely important. Your boxer needs to learn to be in the same area as other animals without showing aggression. Never punish your boxer for showing aggression towards other animals. Punishment may cause your boxer to repress their aggressive behavior, only to have it come out unexpectedly when you may not be able to control your dog. Punishment can also increase frustration, making animal aggression worse instead of better. Instead of punishing your boxer for aggression, take them out of the situation and slowly reintroduce them to it when they have calmed down. Reward your dog for calm behavior at a distance from the trigger and gradually move closer and closer to other dogs or animals, rewarding along and along, until your boxer can be calm in proximity to other dogs or animals. Not every boxer will be able to be trusted loose with other dogs or animals. This is a breed that may not end up doing well at dog parks or loose with livestock.
