We will contact you to let you know who will be working with you to find a mutually-convenient time for conducting the home visit. Home visits are not scary!! This is often the most nerve-wracking part of our application approval process -- but it needn't be. The home visit is designed to accomplish three main goals: 1. To verify that the information provided on the application is true and accurate; 2. To determine whether the home has the ability to provide a safe, loving environment for a dog through Echo Dogs; and 3. To help determine the personality of the dog that would best suit the home and family. However, not every dog is appropriate for every home. We will work with you to find the dog that is best suited for your home, family and lifestyle. We want you to get a dog that will enrich your life and delight you and we want each one of our dogs to have a home and family that thinks he or she is the absolute best dog on the planet. Our Adoption Coordinator takes over at this point in the process. She will look at your application and home visit report and will send your application to the foster home that has a dog she thinks you might be interested in. The foster home will either call or e-mail you with some information about the dog. You should ask as many questions as you feel necessary to understand whether this dog is the "one" for you. If you don't think one sounds just right, just let the foster home or the Adoption Coordinator know and we will look for a different dog. If you can tell us why a particular dog didn't appeal to you, it will help us look at other dogs in our program that might be more suitable. Please do not feel pressured to adopt any dog that you aren't absolutely comfortable about adopting! Each of us loves our foster dogs, but we realize that he or she might not be the right dog for every family or home. We do not feel offended or hurt if you decide you would rather adopt a dog other than our personal foster dog. After all, our goal is to get our foster dog into a home where she or he will be truly treasured. Depending on the distances involved, we have various options available, which we can discuss prior to finalize the adoption. Bear in mind, that the transportation, depending on the distances involved, the speed with which you want to receive the dog and sometimes just plain luck, may involve some additional expense and almost always require you to drive some distance to pick up the dog. We keep each of our dogs on Heartgard or Interceptor and Frontline Plus while in foster care. Many of our dogs have received considerably more medical treatment than the above, depending on what they need when they arrive into foster care. If a dog has a chronic condition that is diagnosed while in our care, we will inform you of the diagnosis and the course of treatment that the dog has been receiving while in our care. Just ask!

How do you treat German Shepherd skin allergies? Treating German Shepherd skin allergies involves a blend of dietary adjustments, supplements, allergy-specific medications, and topical treatments like shampoos or creams to soothe irritation. When treating skin allergies in German Shepherds, the first line of action often involves identifying and eliminating the source of the allergy. This could be certain foods, environmental factors, or specific materials like certain fabric types. A vet may conduct allergy tests to pinpoint the exact allergen. Once the allergen has been identified, it is crucial to remove it from the dog's environment or diet. If the allergen can't be completely avoided, several medical treatments are available, including antihistamines, corticosteroids, and immunosuppressants. Some German Shepherds might require a combination of these treatments to effectively manage their allergies. Along with medical treatments, dietary changes can make a significant difference. Foods rich in Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, such as fish oil, can help reduce inflammation and improve skin health. Similarly, certain supplements can enhance the immune system, helping the dog's body better deal with allergens. Topical treatments, such as medicated shampoos or creams, can relieve itchy and inflamed skin. Regular bathing can remove allergens from the coat and skin, reducing irritation. Are skin allergies common in German Shepherds? Yes, skin allergies are quite common in German Shepherds due to their dense coat and susceptibility to immune system disorders, which can lead to allergies. Skin allergies in German Shepherds are a common health issue due to several factors. First, German Shepherds have a double coat that can trap allergens such as pollen, dust, and mold, leading to allergic reactions. Second, the breed has a genetic predisposition to autoimmune disorders, which can make them more susceptible to allergies compared to other breeds. There are several types of skin allergies German Shepherds can develop. These include food allergies, atopic dermatitis caused by environmental allergens like pollen or dust mites , and contact dermatitis caused by a reaction to certain substances like specific fabrics or types of grass. Symptoms typically include itching, redness, and inflammation; in severe cases, hair loss and skin infections may occur. If you notice your German Shepherd constantly scratching, biting, or licking their skin, or if they develop skin rashes, hives, or other skin abnormalities, it's important to seek veterinary attention to determine if allergies are the cause and to initiate appropriate treatment. By managing allergen exposure and using appropriate treatments, the allergic reactions can be controlled, contributing to a better quality of life for your German Shepherd. Do grains cause skin allergies in German Shepherds? Grains can potentially cause skin allergies in German Shepherds, but it's not always the case. Some dogs may be sensitive or allergic to specific grains leading to skin issues. Whole grains such as wheat, corn, and soy are common allergens for many dogs, including German Shepherds. It is important to understand that not all dogs will react adversely to these foods. Sensitivity to grains often manifests as a food allergy, which can cause various symptoms, including skin problems. However, a true grain allergy is less common than sensitivity or intolerance. If your German Shepherd has a grain allergy, you might notice signs such as chronic ear infections, excessive scratching, skin rashes, and gastrointestinal problems like vomiting and diarrhea. Determining a grain allergy typically involves an elimination diet, where suspected allergens are removed from the diet, and then gradually reintroduced to see if symptoms recur. However, it's important to remember that grains are not the only potential cause of skin allergies. Protein sources such as beef, dairy, chicken, and eggs are common dog allergens. Thus, if your German Shepherd is experiencing skin allergies, it's crucial to work with your vet to identify the root cause, which could be grains or other food components. Always consult a veterinarian for accurate diagnosis and treatment. Final words Dealing with skin allergies in German Shepherds can be a challenging task. Still, it becomes a manageable concern with proper diet management, high-quality foods, raw diet options, and allergy supplements. We have explored the top brands providing dry and raw food choices for German Shepherds with skin allergies, underlining their unique benefits. Also, we have shed light on the best skin allergy supplements for these dogs, focusing on their specific benefits. It's crucial to remember that each dog's response to diet and supplements can vary; hence, monitoring your pet's reactions and progress is vital. Whole grains can potentially cause allergies, but they aren't the sole culprits, and other factors, such as chicken or beef, can also lead to allergic reactions. In all instances, a hypoallergenic diet tailored to your German Shepherd's needs can provide substantial relief and a better quality of life. Frequently asked questions Do you still have questions? Check our FAQ section, and you can find your answer here! Dog food with high-quality proteins, omega-3 fatty acids, and hypoallergenic ingredients can alleviate itchy skin. Choosing the right food for a dog with itchy skin depends on the underlying cause. It could be a food allergy, environmental factors, or a skin condition. A diet high in essential fatty acids, particularly omega-3s, can help nourish and protect the skin. Hypoallergenic diets or limited ingredient diets can also be beneficial, particularly if the itching is due to a food allergy. Always consult a vet for individual dietary advice. Brands with negative reviews or recall history should also be avoided. German Shepherds thrive on high-quality, balanced diets. Also, some brands have been subject to recalls due to contamination issues. Always check the ingredients and company reputation before choosing a food for your German Shepherd. Flea allergies are highly common in German Shepherds. They are allergic to the flea's saliva, leading to severe itching, redness, and discomfort after a flea bite. Flea allergy dermatitis is a prevalent issue among German Shepherds. The allergic reaction occurs when a flea bites a dog, leaving behind its saliva. The proteins in the flea's saliva can trigger an intense allergic response, causing symptoms like severe itching, inflammation, and skin lesions. Regular flea control measures can help manage this common allergy. German Shepherds' most common skin allergies are flea allergy dermatitis, food allergies, and environmental allergies, such as dust mites or pollen. In German Shepherds, flea allergy dermatitis, food allergies, and environmental allergies are the most prevalent skin conditions. These allergies can cause itching, redness, and discomfort. Identifying the specific allergen can help manage these issues effectively, reducing the severity of symptoms. The best approach to a German Shepherd's itchy skin is identifying the cause, and if it's an allergy, a hypoallergenic diet, vet-approved skin supplements, and regular grooming can greatly help. Identifying and eliminating the cause of itchy skin is essential for German Shepherds. If allergies are the root cause, a hypoallergenic diet can significantly reduce symptoms. Regular grooming helps to keep the skin clean and healthy, while vet-approved supplements can support skin health and boost the immune response. Your German Shepherd might be allergic to chicken if they show signs like itching, skin rashes, or digestive issues after consumption. Try switching to a different protein source and consult a vet. Food allergies, including chicken, can be common in German Shepherds. If your dog shows signs such as persistent itching, skin rashes, or digestive problems after eating chicken, it might indicate a food allergy. Switching to a different protein source and monitoring your dog's reaction can help identify if chicken is the problem. However, any suspected allergies should be discussed with a veterinarian for accurate diagnosis and treatment. Always consult with your vet. Hypoallergenic diets for German Shepherds typically involve food that has novel proteins, such as venison, rabbit, or duck, to which your dog has yet to be exposed. Hydrolyzed proteins are also used because they're broken down to a size less likely to trigger an immune response. Grain-free or limited-ingredient diets can also help identify and control allergens. Why do German Shepherd puppies need the best dog food? German Shepherd puppies need dog food designed for large breed puppies to ensure controlled joint and bone growth. This is because large-breed puppies are prone to certain health risks like hip dysplasia and other Orthopedic conditions. The best dog food for German Shepherds will ensure your puppy grows healthy, strong, energetic, and with lovely skin and coats. Nutritional requirements for German Shepherds puppies German Shepherd puppies require a balanced diet that contains four types of nutrients below. These ingredients will ensure that your pup grows and develops optimally for a longer quality of life. Proteins Proteins help the puppies in building up their body tissues. Proteins can be found in chicken, salmon, beef, lamb, eggs, and dairy. Fats Fats are important for healthy skin, fur, brain, and vision. The recommended fat level per dry matter basis is 8. Fats can be found in fish oil, chicken fat, and beef fat. Digestible carbohydrates Because puppies are incredibly energetic, they need digestible carbs to provide them with energy. Digestible carbohydrates can be found in rice, sweet potatoes, potatoes, and whole oats. Micronutrients In addition to these key nutrients, German Shepherd puppies also need micronutrients like calcium, phosphorus, DHA, and omega-3, and vitamin A. They also need fiber to promote digestion and bowel movement and clean water to help with bodily functions. For large dog breed only: Foods specially formulated for German Shepherd puppies: Veterinarian and pet advisor Dr. Choose a dog food that is specially formulated for German Shepherds puppies or large breed puppies can ensure your pups are getting the nutritional requirements at every stage of their growth. The opposite side is giving your pup the wrong food that may lead to serious growth and digestive problems. Things to consider before choosing dog food for German Shepherds puppies 1. Their growth Puppies may need different nutrients at different stages depending on their growth rate. For instance, a puppy in the weaning stage between three to four weeks will need more antioxidants which are found in foods containing Vitamin C and E. In contrast, a teething puppy will need wet dog food which is easily digestible food on its tummy to minimize intestinal upset. For instance, a younger puppy may have difficulty eating larger food pieces than an older puppy. Teething If your dog is teething, which starts at around three weeks, you may want to consider food that contains calcium like dairy and bone broth for strong and healthy teeth. On the other hand, if the dog has teething problems, wet food may be a better option than dry food until they recover. Alternatively, you add wet canned food to their kibble to make it soft and palatable. The body weight An underweight puppy has different dietary requirements from an overweight puppy. You do not want to underfeed or overfeed your puppy. Activity Level Puppies that are extremely active require foods high in carbohydrates to keep up their energy levels. If your dog is not as active, you want to keep the carbs down to avoid obesity. With all the many dry foods out on the market, it can be hard to choose the healthiest for your pups. Step 1. The Association of American Feed Control Officials developed nutrient profiles to establish minimum and some maximum nutrient concentrations for dogs and cats. These profiles are updated when new findings from research in pet nutrition become available. They provide practical guidance for pet food manufacturers. Adult Maintenance: Dog foods formulated for adult maintenance have the nutrients adult dogs need. As previously mentioned, wet foods have a certain aroma and scent that attracts your puppy and makes them want to eat it. However, dry foods have no special scent or mouthwatering aroma. So if you, later on, realize that the optimum type of food for your puppy is dry food, rather than wet, your puppy will have a hard time with the diet change. Since the puppy is used to the appetizing aroma of wet foods, it will most like refuse to eat dry foods. This sudden need to chewing properly may once again demotivate your puppy to eat completely. On top of that, dry food is cheaper than wet foods comparatively. But one thing to keep in mind is that you need to feed your puppy according to the nutritions and calories the dog food contains. Avoid feeding your puppy too much at a time. Rather feed them small portions of food from time to time. This will protect your puppy from an upset stomach and will also help in proper digestion. Remember to follow the guidelines on the food package properly. Eukanuba provides full guidelines on how much to feed your puppy.

There are other reasons that German Shepherd puppies may be incapable of mating in the United States. These dogs are great for all children, but they require a lot of attention and exercise from their owners. Because they love to please their owners, they get bored if the owners are not around a lot. So, if you live in Lubbock, Texas, and want to have a puppy, here is how you can find the best German Shepherd puppies available in that area. Being a breeder means you breed dogs for profit and that means you have to be very careful about the dogs you buy. It is important to pick a good breeder who is knowledgeable and who has good references. You should also be able to visit the kennels where the dogs are being bred and see the dogs in their own conditions. One of the main things to look for when searching for German Shepherd puppies is a healthy, happy dog. Some of the most common issues with German Shepherds include hip dysplasia, congenital eye defects, congenitalpaleness, heart disease, heartworm disease, and thyroid disease. A puppy should be free of any of these problems before you bring him or her into your home. The reality is that there are some health problems you should watch out for before purchasing a German Shepherd pup. Hypoglycemia is one of them, and Rottweiler breeding problems are another. Rottweilers can have a serious problem with hypoglycemia if not treated in time. Remember that every dog makes a small mistake now and then. Some German Rottweiler puppies will get along with everyone, but then others will not. You want to carefully select the type of dog that will fit in with your family and lifestyle. The American Kennel Club keeps records of the purebreds registered through its kennel clubs. For example, a dog from Germany could be born in the United States but have a very difficult temperament to handle in a home in the United States. Their rating system is based on AKC standards, which are based on breeding animals for over 50 years to see what their temperament might be like. Share this:. Maybe that's why he's named "Sug," short for Sugar, because he's so sweet. As much as the staff at the Lubbock Animal Shelter and Adoption Center love him, it's past time he went to a forever home of his own. From the shelter: Sug is a 6-year-old male Pit Bull who has been with us for 39 days. He is very sweet and gentle, playful, protective, hyper, and active. He is up to date on all his shots, fixed, and microchipped. I absolutely adore Sug's little speckle spots and his one-up, one-down ears. At 6 years old, he's had all the time he needs to work out all the puppy wiggles and become a chill, fun adult dog. Remember, when you adopt from the Lubbock Animal Shelter and Adoption Center, your new family member comes up to date on shots, spayed or neutered or with a certificate to get it done if they are a baby and a microchip. So why the long stay for Sug? It's not his fault. It's just harder to place pit bull type dogs, even though "pit bull" is just a general term for broad-shouldered, short-faced dogs. It's not a breed, and that's one of the reasons I find breed restrictions in rentals so offensive. The only dog that ever attacked me was a chow, and I don't see them banned from apartments. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. So, what do you get when you mix them together? An intelligent, social, and playful pooch that can accompany you on all of your adventures. If you are thinking of adopting a Husky Lab Mix into your family, here is everything you need to know. Husky Lab Mix Overview Size — 22 to 25 inches tall and 40 to 60 pounds Coat — Medium length, double coat, straight, color varies Shedding — yes Temperament — Intelligent, sociable, loyal, playful, and eager to please Trainable — Very trainable but can act up when bored Activity — Highly active needs at least one hour of exercise and intermittent daily activity Best For — Families and people with lots of time to spend with them and active lifestyles What is a Husky Lab Mix? They are different from a purebred Labrador Husky, which is a purebred dog native to coastal Labrador. It has the same wolf look as a Husky and, just like a wolf, howls rather than barks. Huskador Appearance Mixed-breed dogs are an unpredictable combination of the two parent breeds, so it is impossible to know exactly what they will look like before they are born. However, one Husky trait that is commonly inherited by Huskadors is heterochromia, which is two different-colored eyes. This is one of the traits that gives both Huskies and Huskadors their unique look. Although their final look is always a lottery, we can make a few generalizations about the appearance of Husky Lab Mixes. Size As both Huskies and Labradors are medium-sized dogs, their joint offspring will be about the same size. Huskies are the smaller of the two breeds, and the females are much smaller than the males. Male Huskies are between 21 and .Labradors are larger at 50 to 80 pounds and 22 to 25 inches tall. This means for safe breeding, the Labrador will pretty much always be the mother of the Siberian Retriever, as the mother needs to be the larger of the two dogs in order to avoid problems birthing the pups. So expect you Husky Lab Mix to stand between 22 and 25 inches tall and weigh 40 to 60 pounds. You can get a better idea of just how big the dog will be by looking at the size of the parents. Color Labskies come in a wide range of different colors including black, brown, yellow, white, grey, and copper. They can be one solid color, like Labradors, or they can be an unexpected mix, taking after their Husky parent. It is not uncommon to see white Huskadors with the golden ears of a Labrador, or white pups with the coloring over the ears and nose in black or brown. But any pattern or mix is possible. Coat Siberian Retrievers will usually have the short coat of a Labrador, as this seems to be a dominant gene that shows up in their mixed children. But they are also likely to have the straight hair that we are accustomed to seeing on Huskies. The dog will certainly have a double coat, as this is a feature of both breeds. Huskies have a particularly thick undercoat that helps keep them warm in icy temperatures, so a Huskador might also find themselves with one. But whether they inherit this winter warmer or not, Siberian Retrievers shed—a lot—especially in fall and spring when they change their coats. Regular brushing is essential for maintenance, as is a vacuum cleaner that is up to the task! Husky Labrador Mix Character The personality you get when you mix a Husky and a Labrador is unpredictable, but both are friendly dogs that love people, so you can be sure you will have a sociable, human-loving pup. Labrador Retrievers were initially hunting dogs bred to retrieve wild game. This means they have been bred to enjoy being around humans and to be pleasers, completing tasks in return for rewards. They are friendly, good with strangers, and easy to train, which means their behavior is controllable. Huskies are working dogs bred to pull sleds and hunt in cold climates. They can also be very vocal and bark a lot. These dogs are escape artists, which means you need to take extra care when building their homes and enclosures. A Husky Lab Mix can inherit any and all of these traits in different measures, but you can be sure the dog will be intelligent and trainable. Both breeds are also playful, friendly, and love people. They make great pets for family homes. Activity Levels Both Labradors and Huskies have a lot of energy, so you can be sure their offspring are also going to be high energy pups. They will need a minimum of one hour of exercise every day. These dogs will love and benefit from a quick game of fetch every few hours, which appeals to their retriever instinct. This regular distraction will also help keep them occupied enough that they are less likely to indulge in unwanted behavior such as chewing your shoes, digging holes, and finding their way under the fence. Yes, sometimes these dogs are just too intelligent for their own good! These dogs are ideal for active owners who want a companion on their adventures. And Husky Labs Mixes can go just about anywhere with you. They are personable enough to get on well in a crowd, they will have no problems with those long jokes, and they even love the water! These dogs tend to be great swimmers. Exercise As we have already said, Siberian Retrievers are very high energy dogs, so they need a lot of exercise. This means a minimum of one hour per day. They need exercise in regular bursts. As we have already suggested, take them out in the yard for a quick game of fetch a couple of times a day and you will have a much happier pooch. It will also help maintain their weight, which is important because carrying extra pounds can exacerbate many of the health problems common in these dogs. Intellectual Stimulation The pups of Huskies and Labradors are highly intelligent, which means they need a lot of intellectual stimulation. If not, they will get into trouble. Labradors tend to be chewers and will make short work of a lot of things in your home. Huskies are diggers and also seem to manage to get in or out of anything. So you may come home to find they are not where you left them. Puzzle toys can help keep your dog stimulated, but be aware that Huskadors will make short work of them. They are heavy chewers with powerful jaws, so you will be replacing that toy regularly. Another option is to look for more durable indestructible dog toys. The KONG Extreme is one of our favorite toys and can be mentally stimulating as well as highly durable. Companionship Huskadors need a lot of love and attention. They are not the type of dog you can leave alone at home for the whole day while you are at work. They will not only get into trouble, but they can develop separation anxiety and depression. This is not the type of dog for people whose houses are empty for most of the day. Grooming Both parent dogs of Siberian Retrievers shed a lot, so you can expect their kids to do the same. For this reason, they need to be brushed at least twice a week, and during their shedding seasons in fall and spring they will need brushing every day. This should not be seen as a chore, but rather as some nice bonding time for the two of you. What may seem like more of a chore is cleaning up all the hair they shed around your home. Commit to the fact that very regular vacuuming is now part of your regime, and get a specialist pet vacuum cleaner that has the power and the attachments needed to pick up all that hair. This means they do not need to be bathed too often. When you do bathe them, be sure to wash out all the shampoo and conditioner. This can easily be held onto by their hair, and if left behind can irritate their skin. But brushing is only the beginning of the grooming regime these pups need, not all of which will be such a pleasant bonding experience. They need their teeth brushed at least three times a week. Thankfully, this can be partially achieved with dental chew toys. They should also have their ears cleaned regularly, especially if they have the floppy ears of a retriever. Bacteria, yeast, and parasites live in the ear canal. Finally, make sure to trim their nails on a regular basis, at least monthly. This is often a job best left to the experts, as it is easy to cut too deep and hurt your pooch, which will only make them less cooperative next time as they will develop a fear of the clippers pretty quickly. If you are confident enough to do it at home, check out our list of the best nail clippers. We prefer to use a nail grinder called a Dremmel to trim our dogs nails. However, the Dremmel is something you should slowly introduce to your dog so he is not fearful of the sound and vibration. Diet Huskadors need a diet that is high in healthy proteins. Both Labradors and Huskies are natural carnivores, so they feel better when they have a diet high in meat and without excessive amounts of carbohydrates. Processed carbohydrates should be avoided for all dogs, but especially these. Husky Lab Mixes have a lot of energy, and that protein will help them get through their day. They should also have quite a bit of fat in their diet but not too much. You need to be careful about maintaining the weight of these dogs, as they can have heart and joint issues, and excess weight will just exacerbate these health problems. Husky Lab Mixes can have sensitive stomachs, which means that artificial coloring, rendered fats, and processed grains should all be avoided. Look to vary their diet by introducing novel proteins such as rabbit and venison. Puppies should eat special puppy food until about the age of one. Until they are six months old, feed them four times a day, and after that drop to twice a day. They will probably need to move onto special foods for senior dogs at about the age of 7, which is when they enter the second half of their lives. As a rule, dogs need 25 to 30 calories per pound of their weight per day. But while this is a good guide, listen to your vet and watch their weight to find their unique dietary balance. Check out our list of best dog foods for Huskies and best dog foods for Labs for some of our recommendations. Known Health Problems Dogs are just as unique as humans when it comes to the health problems they can develop, but some breeds are more prone to certain conditions than others. Husky Lab Mixes are susceptible to the conditions that are common among both Huskies and Labradors: Hip and Elbow Dysplasia — A condition that arises when the hip and elbow joints do not develop normally, which can cause extreme pain and arthritis later in life Eye Conditions — Various eye conditions including cataracts, corneal dystrophy, and progressive retinal atrophy, all of which can all result in blindness Heart Conditions — Usually a decrease in the effectiveness of the heart pumping blood throughout the body, which can lead to complications such as a build-up of fluid in the chest and abdomen Life Expectancy Husky Labrador Mix dogs have a life expectancy of 10 to 15 years. At this time, their energy levels will drop and they will need some changes in their diet and exercise. Check out our list of best dog foods for your senior dog for our recommendation of dog foods for older dogs. How To Train Your Husky Lab Mix Huskadors inherit a lot of intelligence on both sides, so they are smart dogs that are highly trainable, but they can be stubborn. For this reason, domination and punishment should never be used. It can cause these stubborn pups to dig in their heels and refuse to cooperate. The best way to train Husky Labrador Mixes is through positive reinforcement and reward. They are people-pleasers so they find this highly motivational. While these pooches are naturally sociable, it is a good idea to socialize them from a young age, especially with children. This helps them learn the care they need to exercise when dealing with smaller humans. They will also probably need to be trained to control their likely Husky-inherited tendency to bark. They will meet you halfway, but you need to fulfill your side of the bargain. Husky and Labrador mixes make great pets for families, as they will quickly become members of the family and get on well with kids. A family also often means lots of people in and out of the home to spend time with them. But they are perfect for anyone with a highly active lifestyle looking for a dog that can accompany them on all of their adventures. They will have no problems taking on challenging trails, being out and about all day, and even going in the water. So this is the ideal dog for someone who has the time and energy to give them a lot of love and attention. They will thank you with the same in return. This means you can meet the parents, which can help give you an idea of what kind of character the puppy will have. The breeder will also be able to share medical records with you, which can give you advance warning about the types of medical conditions your new pooch is prone to developing. If you are adopting a more mature Huskador, spend some time with them to see what they are like. As Husky Lab Mixes are still a relatively new breed, they are also relatively expensive. History of the Breeds Siberian Husky More closely related to wolves than many modern dog breeds, Huskies have long been sled dogs used in colder regions. They are bred for strength, swiftness, and to withstand cold temperatures. Their unique wolf-like look and friendly nature mean they are also extremely popular as pets. Labrador Retriever Labrador Retrievers were brought from Newfoundland to England in the 19th century and then trained and bred as hunting dogs. They are highly intelligent and love being around people, working, and pleasing their humans. This is why they are often used as assistance dogs, as they are both hard workers and incredibly loving and loyal. Yes, Husky Lab Mixes are excellent dogs, as they are intelligent, highly trainable, friendly, and loyal, plus they are great with children and strangers. If they are under-stimulated, they can have a tendency to act out, chewing and digging. Huskadors generally grow to between 20 and 25 inches tall and weigh between 40 and 60 pounds. If you would like a dog on the smaller side, choose a female, as they tend to be smaller than their male counterparts. If your Husky Lab Mix is playful and energetic, this is a sign that they are happy. When they start to become lethargic, this is often a sign that there is something wrong. The Verdict When you mix a Siberian Husky and a Labrador Retriever you get a very attractive dog that is also loveable, loyal, and a joy to have around. They are the ideal pet for families and anyone looking for a companion for their active lifestyle. These dogs do need a lot of love and attention and can suffer from separation anxiety. But if you invest in your Huskador, it is impossible to put a price on the unconditional love and companionship they will give you in return. Helps ease anxiety in their new home. We love using Bully Sticks to help divert these unwanted behaviors. For a list of all the supplies we get for our new service dog puppies check out our New Puppy Checklist on the PuppyInTraining. A Husky Lab Mix has high energy levels, and she needs to be exercised properly to stay fit. She also enjoys swimming, running in the park, and playing Frisbee, or any other interactive game. These dogs are suitable for active families, where running, jogging, camping trips, or hiking are common activities. I think having a yard where your dog can run freely is essential when dealing with this breed. Make sure you have a strong fence before bringing your future dog home, to prevent her from escaping. A Lab Husky Mix also loves to dig holes, so take all precautions if you have plants. It can be white, black, brown, golden, or any combination of these colors. Some have blue eyes, while others have eyes of different colors. The most common are eye and skin diseases, degenerative myelopathy , arthritis, hip dysplasia, and cancer. Besides potty training , obedience lessons can also help you bond easier with your dog while giving you the chance to remain in charge. This dog is very intelligent and in most cases you can train her yourself, especially if you start at an early age. Always use positive reinforcement and never punish your dog for not following your commands. Outside the shedding season, your dog needs to be brushed twice a week, to keep her coat beautiful and to reduce the amount of lost hair. Keeping your dog alone for too long can cause separation anxiety, sometimes also found in Huskies, but more common when it comes to Labradors. Get her some resistant dog toys to chew, and free access to the yard where she can play, run, and move freely. Make sure she always has a place to go in case of bad weather. If you work all day, ask a friend or a pet walker to take her to the park and make sure you also spend enough time with her when you get home. Conclusion As you can see, a Labrador Husky Mix is a great dog. Do you think you can handle such a dog? Or do you already have one? Let us know what you think about the Husky Lab Mix in a comment below. About Alexandra Animalso I was raised to be a dog person. My first Shepherd grew up as I did and wanted to be where I was at all times. I got my second dog as a 16th birthday present, and her loyalty for me was just as strong as my first. I hope that my contribution to Animalso will help others find dogs who give them that same unconditional love. Very easy to train. I disagree with many of the characteristics listed. Ours is lazy and does not like a lot of activity. The only issue we have is his obsession with children. He loves kids so much that if he can see them but cannot get to them he becomes so laserly focused and cry a very high pitch until they are out of sight. He wants to smell them and lick them on the face and generally hang out with them. Another dog approached and he chased him or her off in an aggressive manner. I had never seen him aggressive like that before. However, husky lab mixes likely existed naturally before this time. The Chukchi people bred this breed to serve as sled dogs and companions. This dog breed is best known for its wolf-like appearance, distinctive markings, and thick, double coat. Huskies are outgoing and energetic. These dogs like to interact and spend time with their owners. Although intelligent, this breed has an independent streak and tends to be stubborn. This personality makes training the dogs challenging for novice owners. Parent Breed: Labrador Retriever The Labrador retriever is a medium-sized retriever gun dog and a member of the sporting group. The breed is originally from Newfoundland, where the dog helped fishermen haul nets and catch fish. Labradors were developed and perfected as a breed in the United Kingdom. Labs have double water-resistant coats and come in three colors — yellow, chocolate, or black. Eager to please, friendly, and affectionate, they make excellent family pets and service dogs. The breed typically serves as search and rescue dogs and bomb detection dogs, among other working roles. Lifespan The husky lab is a generally healthy mixed breed dog with an average lifespan of 11 to 13 years. Although this crossbreed may inherit health issues from either parent breed, many husky lab mixes reach old age without any health problems. Husky Lab Mix Appearance A husky lab mix can take on the appearance of a Labrador retriever, a Siberian husky, or inherit traits from both parent breeds. The dog has an athletic build. Depending on which parent breed it takes after, the dog may have erect or floppy ears, and brown, blue, or different-colored eyes. Height and Weight Husky lab mixes are considered medium-sized dogs with a height of 20 to 25 inches at the withers and a weight of 40 to 60 pounds. Some Labrador huskies weigh more, depending on the size and weight of the Labrador retriever parent. Colors Husky lab mixes are typically white, grey, black, yellow, brown, red, or a mix of colors. Coat Husky lab mixes have a thick double coat. Regardless of the length, the coat is soft and silky. Like its husky parent, this mix prefers cooler temperatures over hot and humid conditions. These dogs are heavy shedders. The soft double coat sheds moderately throughout the year and sheds heavily during the spring and fall. Personality and Temperament The husky lab is loyal, affectionate, craves human companionship, and enjoys being around its family. This intelligent, playful, and energetic dog is always in the mood to play and enjoys being physically and mentally challenged. Barking Husky labs are typically vocal dogs that take after their husky parents by howling to communicate. Use positive reinforcement training to teach a husky lab not to bark or howl as much. Husky Lab Mix Care Husky labs are high-maintenance, requiring a lot of exercise, mental stimulation, and grooming. Food Needs The ideal diet for the husky lab includes kibble formulated for a medium-sized breed with high energy. Choose dog foods that contain high protein levels, moderate fat, easily digestible carbs, and essential vitamins and minerals. Feed the adult husky lab two to three small meals per day, and offer three to four daily meals to puppies. Grooming Needs Brush the husky lab mix three to five times per week during the spring and fall shedding seasons, and twice per week during the off-season. Brushing will remove loose hair, prevent mats from forming, and keep the coat clean. Bathe this breed once every two or three months, or more often if the dog gets dirty or develops a strong smell. Clean the ears as necessary using an ear cleaning solution for dogs. Exercise Needs The highly energetic husky lab needs at least 60 minutes of intense activity every day to stay happy and in good shape. Any type of cardiovascular activity, such as running, swimming, or hiking, will physically challenge this mix and help it release pent-up energy. Besides regular exercise, aim for two to three long walks per day with your dog, plus two minute play sessions to prevent the dog from getting bored. An excited dog can accidentally knock over a small child. Mental Needs Husky lab mixes should be given a lot of mental stimulation, or they quickly become bored and destructive. Owners can also provide stimulation by teaching the dog new commands and tricks. Spend at least 30 minutes per day playing fetch, hide and seek, or tug-of-war with this breed. Common Health Concerns Husky lab mixes are generally healthy dogs, but they are predisposed to the same health issues that affect Labrador retrievers and Siberian huskies. The husky lab can inherit eye conditions that lead to blindness, including cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy, and corneal dystrophy. Husky labs are also prone to hip dysplasia, arthritis, allergies, bloat, and cancer. Take the lab husky mix to the vet for a complete check-up as soon as you bring it home from the breeder or shelter. Training Husky lab mixes are highly trainable dogs, but they can be stubborn. Use reward-based training instead of using punishment and domination to teach the dog commands. This breed loves to please its owners and finds positive reinforcement training motivating. Although friendly by nature, these dogs benefit from early socialization, especially with children. Expose the dog to different smells, sounds, situations, places, and people, including kids, from puppyhood to help the dog grow into an amicable pet. Husky Lab Mix Price Husky lab mixes are affordable, given that most designer dog breeds are more expensive than their purebred parents. The Labrador Retriever has a history as a gun dog and was first developed in Newfoundland in the 19th century. These days, the Labrador Retriever has become recognized as one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States and frequently ranks as the most popular dog breed of all, according to the American Kennel Club. A husky lab mix is a designer dog produced by its two parent dog breeds, a Labrador Retriever and Siberian Husky. Designer dog means that the dog is a crossbreed between two purebreds. In this case, the crossbreed will not only inherit the looks from its parents but the characteristics and temperament as well. Labradors play particular roles that can be helpful for the community. About Labrador They are trained to aid people with disability. They have a charming personality that allows them to serve as a therapy dog. Labs are widely used in law enforcement agencies and other organizations in different parts of the world, mainly in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. These groups use Labs as retriever-gun dogs. Their particular capability makes them suitable for hunting and sporting activities. Take note that Labradors vary in appearance and behavior, which is categorized into two types: English Labs are breeds that are more trainable, making them suitable for people who want a dog to accompany them during hunting. American Labs are more energetic, allowing them to be chosen to participate in field trials. They have a leaner body and longer legs compared to their counterparts. Labradors either have a chocolate, black, or yellow coat. These breeds are sometimes mistakenly called Golden Retriever, but take note that the latter has longer hair compared to Labs. Furthermore, the Labrador Retrievers weigh between 65 to 80 pounds for a male, and 55 to 70 pounds for a female. These breeds also require less maintenance because they only shed hair twice every year and may sometimes exceed during temperate climates. They can even get along with kids and families easily. This breed originated in Siberia in Russia. Most people use the Siberian Huskies in hunting and even in transportation by training them to pull sleds. Their loyalty enables them to feel closer to families and kids quickly. Unlike the Labradors, the Siberian Huskies have medium body size. Male huskies weigh 45 to 60 pounds while females are between 35 to 50 pounds. They also have a thicker double coat than the other parent breed of Husky Labs. Erect ears characterize them with markings. These breeds are also known for being energetic. Their thick coat allows them to withstand harsh weather conditions and frigid temperature, but it is also the reason why they need weekly grooming. Commonly, they have patterned colors on their body. Their paws, legs, tail, and face may be covered with white markings, and the rest of their body is black. Their coat could also be a combination of copper-red and white or white and gray, and in some cases, just pure white. You can rarely find a Miniature Siberian Husky with an agouti coat, which means that the body has other band colors. Their nose could be pointed or square, and their tails have very thick fur. Unlike other dog breeds that bark, this one usually howls. Considering the temperament of both parent breeds, husky lab Mixes are known to be energetic, which requires them to get plenty of exercises and an active lifestyle. They also need mental stimulation to make them entertained. They are people-oriented, which is beneficial for family members most especially if you have kids at home. It is recommended to expose them to socialization to reduce their anxiety and make them calm whenever they saw people or other animals. Bringing them for a long walk every morning is an excellent exercise for them. Other activities that will help them stay active are hiking, romping, and running. You can teach them these things most especially if you are training them to compete in sports. It reduces your stress in cleaning your home, and you can also save money from bringing it at the dog parlor. Brushing their coat about two or three times a week is enough to keep their skin beautiful. The average life span is 11 to 13 years, and between these stages, you will discover the milestones that your pet can experience. Take note that being a dog owner is also the same as parenting a child. It requires focus, determination, patience, and effort if you want to establish the dog with the character that you want it to possess. Although these breeds have natural traits and personality, it is still helpful to help them develop them. Before you decide to adopt a husky lab, make sure that you are entirely equipped with the life stages of this breed. It is the period that you need to take extra care of your puppy. Some of the body organs of the husky lab are not yet fully developed, so you need to be gentle when you want to hold them. It is also the time that these breeds are blind and deaf yet. The husky lab Mix have a delicate body during the neonatal stage. That means that they need to be kept beside their mother to obtain body heat. Most of the time, you can see them sleeping or being fed by their dog mom. You will also notice that their parent frequently licks them. It is a way for the dog to help their puppies eliminate. Their ears will open, allowing them to respond to sounds around them. They can also see a bit of light as they open their eyes. This time, they can already eliminate on without seeking help from their mother. Also, their mobility starts to be developed. You can see them striving to crawl since their strength is not yet enough for them to walk. They may sometimes try to stand up, but their force is not yet intact to carry their body, leading them to stumble. The husky lab will also start to recognize their parent and siblings. Small teeth will also grow, but it is not yet advisable to give them food to chew. However, you still need to be mindful when sudden loud noises occur because it can scare the pets or worse, it can even affect their development. You should continue to help them in the socialization process. As soon as they recognize people and other pets around them, they slowly show interaction. Their senses will help them see things clearly and respond to them. It is also a crucial stage for them because their razor-sharp teeth are beginning to lose. This development may happen between three to six weeks. The puppy will experience teething before he gets permanent teeth. READ - Five Amazing Things About the Teacup Pomsky 4 to 7 weeks — Socialization stage Since they can already recognize people and other species around them at the earlier stage, now is the time for them to socialize. Their siblings can contribute to their development during these weeks. It is also essential for them to interact with people for them to understand and follow the discipline being taught. This stage is also essential for both the Husky Lab and its mother. It is the perfect time for the mother dog to wean her puppies. Weaning is crucial because her milk supply is starting to dry up. You should also take note that you play an essential role during this process. You must hold the puppies from their mother dog for a few minutes a day as one way of training them to socialize. Let them mingle with their siblings so they will get used to it. It is also the perfect time to start feeding them. Let them eat in a clean pan. In this way, you are training them to eat independently. Since it is the first time that you are going to let the puppies eat food while it is also a growth period for them, it is essential to choose high-quality food specially formulated for them. Their teeth are not yet stronger enough to bite hard foods, so make sure to moisten it with warm water before giving. Take note that the process is new to them, so it takes patience to feed them with different food. If you think that your effort is not working, you might want to try other food flavors that are appealing to them. Some puppies may be picky eaters, while some dislike the taste of the food. Also, only give them a small amount at the start to avoid wastage. It is also crucial to keep in mind that this stage is not the best time to separate the puppies from their mother. Separating them at an early age will make them bark or bite because they will feel threatened and nervous. However, they are still sensitive to loud noises, making them feel threatened or terrified. That means that their socialization training should continue until this period. Worst is, they will have a traumatic experience when they are not taught properly, or specific scenarios are not controlled. One of the best ways is to avoid creating loud noises or threatening them. Also, prevent harsh discipline or rough play because it will let them learn to bite. Do you know that you can also train them through simple commands or words that they can easily recognize? Teach them actions like stay, sit, come, and down. In this way, you are also training them to follow instructions. The development of your husky lab puppy continues on this stage. You can notice that the pet will start to have better control of its bowel. His sleeping pattern is also changing, wherein he will have a better sleep at night. Keep in mind that husky lab puppies are prone to diseases during this stage. Therefore, you should make sure that their cage or sleeping area is always clean. Make sure that you have completed their entire vaccination to keep them safe from any illness. Despite this fact, you still need to impose the commands that you used to teach them. You might also feel stressed during this stage because it is also the time when your pet is starting to bite things like rugs, couch, or grasses. Instead, say no gently and buy them toys that they can play with. It is the time when they show their eagerness yet they could sometimes be bratty. It is normal for them to show confidence when you teach them anything most especially that they feel independent. They may bite, or you might get hurt if they are forced to counteract with you. Teething may also be stressful for them because they would find ways to relieve the pain they feel. To help them cope up in this stage of their life, give them soft toys so that they play with it and they have something to use to relieve the pressure. Keep them away from the things that they might chew. It is their way of finding relief, but you need to make sure that they will not go to places where they might swallow even a tiny object. It is dangerous for their digestive system and health. Since one of the parents of the husky labs is husky, you should expect that this type is difficult to housebreak. It is not surprising when the puppy adapts this trait as well. However, you should continue to make an effort to house train the pet. Reward him or give him praises when he learns to defecate or urinate outside the home. Although the personality and character of the husky lab mixes are slightly developed in this stage, you must still teach him the right attitude like being obedient and calm when strangers or other animals passed by. This breed is known to be energetic; therefore, you must allow him to do plenty of exercises and activities that will help develop his body tone. It is the period in which they have learned a lot of things. They are energetic and love to spend time playing with their siblings. However, you still need to take care of them to prevent them from getting injured. Now that you have established their mental and emotional maturity, you can now increase the training period and other activities that you want them to learn. It could include herding or agility. Although both parent dogs of the husky labs have hunting and sporting skills, it is still essential to train them consistently. In that way, they will learn how to use their natural skills correctly, and you can also enhance their performance at the same time. Commonly, the husky lab Mix stop their development stage before they reach their first birthday. As they become nine months old, you can also notice that their height increases while their body is leaner. Paying attention to their growth will guide you on how to train and teach them basic and advanced skills that they can use when they reach their full adulthood, which is between two to 2. Generally, male husky labs reach their full size when they are 36 months. They also mature emotionally until they are about two years old. It is why it is always recommended to teach your dogs the socialization and emotional aspects so that you can establish it before they get mature. Also essential to supply your Dog with supplements and nutritious foods during its development years. It is an excellent way for you to prevent diseases from attacking your pet. Remember that sickness can reduce the life span of this dog breed, so it is excellent when you boost his health. Make sure that you only choose high-quality foods that contain vitamins and minerals he needs to strive. They may inherit the diseases from their parent dogs, but you can still do something to prevent the occurrence of such illnesses. Husky Lab Mix Training Obedience training is a must with a Husky Lab mix, and it should start as soon as you bring your dog home. This training will help you develop a positive relationship with your pet while also enabling you to remain in control. A Husky Lab is a very intelligent canine, and a responsible and patient owner can train their Huskadors themselves. This will go easier if the lessons are done at an early age. Fortunately, this stubborn streak can be tempered with heaps of positive reinforcement and repetition. Socialization training is also crucial for this dog. Make sure you start socializing your puppy as soon as you bring it home. Invite your friends over or take your pet to different places. The idea is to let it interact with various people and animals. To make training easier, consider the following tips: Positive reinforcement is best. This is a better strategy with this breed. But you have to make sure you have the time and energy for this dog. You should ask yourself if you have the patience and dedication needed to provide it with the best possible life before getting one. This magnificent dog is not the pet for busy employees or those who are away from home for long hours. The Husky Lab mix is a unique dog and a fantastic companion. It needs someone who will love it back; someone who will dedicate the time and effort to ensure its physical and mental requirements are met. Finding a healthy Husky Lab mix puppy. Labs are working dogs , born with a job to do. As you might guess, that job typically involves the second word in their breed name — retrieving! These dogs were bred to work closely with hunters to flush out and collect downed prey. Labs are loyal human-focussed dogs. They make for fun-loving, affectionate, and playful pets. Huskies are working dogs too. Historically, they helped out with hunting and gathering food, firewood, supplies, and other necessities. These dogs were bred specifically to cohabitate and collaborate with people. Overall, they make for wonderful, loyal pets and guard dogs. But as he grows up, each day will bring new surprises. Only time will tell which breed-specific traits he has inherited from his Labrador Retriever and Siberian Husky parents, respectively. Your Husky Lab mix full grown may weigh anywhere from 40 to 60 pounds. He is likely to be athletic and powerful. Both parents grow up to about 24 inches in height, so you can expect a medium to large dog. He may have facial and body features that lean more towards the Lab or the Husky. He could have brown eyes, blue eyes, or even one of each! Coats and Colors Labs are well known for their different coats, and mixing a Lab of a certain color with a Husky could lead to a Huskador that has a dark coat. Shedding and Grooming The Labsky dog tends to shed. A lot. The reason for this is simple: the Siberian Husky grows a double-thick coat as protection against the freezing Siberian climate. This means that even a Lab Husky mix who inherits more Lab traits will still shed more than your average Labrador, although likely less than your average Husky. Now, if your dog inherits more Husky traits, you can look forward to a jaw-dropping level of shedding at least twice a year as your pup sheds his thick undercoat and prepares to regrow it. But regardless of which end of the shedding spectrum your pooch tends towards, the best way to control Lab Husky mix shedding is to brush your dog regularly. You can use a tool called an undercoat rake to make the shedding process much more comfortable for your dog and more manageable for you. Take time once or twice per week to groom your dog. This will give you some control over when and where the hairs fall out. Also, it gives you some regular enjoyable bonding time with your pup. Husky Lab Mix Temperament Lab Husky mix temperament is where you will find the most uncertainty, since any puppy can tend more towards the temperament of one parent breed or the other. Your puppy may exhibit a calmer Labrador temperament or a more high-strung Husky temperament. While they are likely to be smart, Husky Lab mix puppies could take after the Lab parent and be a quick, eager learner during training. Or they could be more stubborn and even inconsistent, like the Husky parent. A Huskador puppy could also have a more reserved personality, like a Husky. Alternatively, you could end up with a naturally exuberant Lab-leaning pup that reminds you of the canine star of Marley and Me. Labs tend to bark only as needed. Huskies, on the other hand, tend to bark at anything and everything. Your pup could fall anywhere in between the two. Digging is another issue , as Huskies are big on digging. Labs are known for chewing on anything they can find, which could also be an issue for your Siberian Retriever. He will likely be very loyal and somewhat protective, however. Socialization is an important part of raising a well-behaved member of any breed or mix. From the day you bring him or her home, have plenty of visitors to the home. Take your Huskador to a number of different locations to familiarize him with other environments. Try to get your pup to meet as many different people, vehicles and animals as possible. Socialization is important to the well-being and good behavior of every breed, even ultra-friendly Labs. Huskies, as mentioned, tend to be a bit more reserved, so socialization is vital for this mix. Training and Behavioral Traits For decades, dog training was all about establishing the pack leader. Leading trainers taught that there were only two choices: either your dog was the alpha, or you were the alpha. However, we know differently now. For a dog, there is no such thing as alpha, or dominance, or pack leader, or even anything similar to any of these concepts. As long as you provide your dog with his daily required resources, your interspecies family life is likely to go quite smoothly overall. In fact, the purebred Siberian Husky breed is known to exhibit some of these traits far more frequently than purebred Labrador Retrievers. This can make training more challenging and time-consuming if your Labsky puppy tends more towards the Husky side of his parentage. But whether such behavioral traits show up in your puppy or not, these behaviors are never about winning dominance over you or becoming the pack leader. These traits are either inbuilt breed-specific characteristics, or fear-based responses to perceived scarcity of needed resources. Ultimately, your puppy is dependent on you for every need that he has. Understanding this can eliminate your concern over alpha-type struggles. Huskador Exercise The Husky Lab mix comes from two active, energetic, working dog breed parents. Boredom can be a real problem for these dogs, as they are literally bred to stay active all day, every day. Often, they perform very physically demanding jobs! So you can pretty much count on the need to keep your Siberian Husky Lab mix dog active and busy. Otherwise, she may develop her own itinerary of fun activities to pursue. Lab Husky mix dogs also have webbed paws and a natural love of water. Swimming is a great activity for them. So is any game of fetch that involves retrieving a bobbing toy from the water. They also love to run and will eagerly enjoy long runs off-leash if your situation permits. Lab mixes are at risk of hip dysplasia, so be careful with younger dogs and keep their exercise at appropriate levels. Health and Care A Lab and Husky mix puppy may inherit known health issues from either the Labrador or the Husky gene pool. Therefore, it is critical to conduct health testing when selecting a designer dog puppy. This is the only way to know if breed-specific congenital health issues may be present. Each breed may have health issues that are inherited or acquired along the way. Labrador Retrievers are prone to a few health issues that can be protected against in future generations through health testing. The most prevalent are hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as progressive retinal atrophy. Siberian Husky dogs are known to be prone to a few health problems including cataracts, glaucoma, arthritis and heart problems. Predicting Life Expectancy Generally speaking, the Labrador Retriever has a life expectancy of 10 to 12 years. The Siberian Husky, in turn, has an average lifespan of 11 to 13 years. These statistics would indicate a Lab and Husky mix might live anywhere from 10 to 13 years, which is generally considered an accurate lifespan range for these designer dogs. We recommend reaching out to these rescue societies to ask about any Huskador dogs in need of adopting. Here are a few to get you started.

Although he's known as the "French" poodle, the breed actually originated in Germany and was used as a water retriever. This smart, fancy canine is actually an athletic dog. Don't be fooled by the frilly exterior. This is one tough puppy. Poodle History In Germany, the poodle was known as the "pudel," from which comes the English breed name. The original poodle was a relatively large dog, with the smaller varieties we know today bred down from it. The fancy coat clips aren't arbitrary or simply fashionable, but reflect the breed's use as a water dog. Parts of the coat were clipped to enhance the dog's ability to swim and retrieve game. The miniature poodle was developed to hunt truffles, those underground fungi so adored by gourmands. Don't be surprised if your miniature or toy poodle -- a pet you acquired as a lap companion -- turns out to have a strong prey drive. Standard, Miniature and Toy The American Kennel Club breed standards for the three sizes of poodle -- standard, miniature and toy -- are the same, with the exception of height. A standard poodle's height is above 15 inches tall at the shoulder. The miniature poodle stands between 10 inches and 15 inches, while the toy poodle matures at less than 10 inches tall. The standard and miniature fall into the AKC nonsporting group, while the toy poodle is, obviously, in the toy category. All poodles should appear intelligent and elegant, with an "air of distinction and dignity," according to the breed standard. Poodle Coat and Colors All poodles appear in solid colors. These include white, black, cream, silver, gray and blue -- with accompanying black noses, lips and eye rims. Brown poodles and those of the faded brown shade known as cafe au lait sport liver-colored noses, lips and eye rims. Apricot poodles can have noses, lips and eye rims of either black or brown. While the poodle doesn't shed, his curly coat requires considerable grooming and upkeep. Expect to visit the groomer at least every couple of months unless you want your dog to look like a walking mop. Poodle Temperament Among the most intelligent of canines, poodles soak up training. All sizes need a fair amount of exercise, although the standard requires much more than his smaller cousins. Poodles love their people. While the standard makes the best choice for an active family with kids, the miniature and toy varieties are fine with older children. Poodles usually get along with other dogs and cats. They do well in obedience, agility and other canine competitions -- standards can star in hunt testing alongside more conventional sporting breeds -- and excel as therapy dogs. Poodle Health Issues Progressive retinal atrophy, an eye disease that eventually causes blindness, is found in toy and miniature poodles. Standard poodles are prone to sebaceous adenitis, resulting in hair loss, skin thickening, sores and foul odor. Certain bone and joint diseases affect the breed, including hip dysplasia, luxating patellas -- colloquially known as slipped kneecaps -- and Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, which results in bone cell death in the femoral head. Height: over 15 inches Weight: 45 to 80 pounds Height: 19 to 24 inches Weight: 45 to 80 pounds Medium Size not recognized by the AKC Height: 14 to 18 inches Weight: 40 to 50 pounds Miniature Height: 11 to 15 inches Weight: 14 to 18 pounds Height: 12 to 13 inches Weight: 14 to 18 pounds Toy Height: 10 inches or under Weight: 6 to 9 pounds Height: 10 to 11 inches Weight: 6 to 9 pounds Apart from these four recognized sizes, there is also what breeders call the teacup French Poodle. They are essentially smaller than the toy and should not be mistaken as one. So far, no breed standard covers the size of teacups, but according to the breeders I know, they are usually 5 to 7 pounds in weight and 9 inches in size. The temperament of French Poodles slightly differs according to their size. But generally, they are smart, active, trainable, and loyal dogs. Standard French Poodles are quite energetic. However, when you compare them to the other sizes, they are still more reserved. The smaller ones are often seen following their owners and entertaining themselves with various activities, unlike the standard-sized pups who love to just chill around with their favorite person. When it comes to children, the medium and miniature are more recommended because they are slightly larger compared to the toy and the teacup. If you are worried about their behavior towards visitors, stop your anxious thoughts. French Poodles, no matter what size, are friendly to strangers and other pets in the household. If you consider taking care of them as a priority, they could even exceed this life expectancy. Puppies afflicted with this do not produce sufficient adrenal hormones, leading to gastrointestinal disturbances, lethargy, and canine stress. Chronic Active Hepatitis: This occurs when the liver is inflamed which leads to liver failure. This is a result of an autosomal recessive gene that is present in Poodles. This is a progressive disease and is seen mostly in adult French Poodles. Atrial Septal Defects: This is a rare heart problem that is present among the Poodle population. The heart is observed to have a hole in the upper chambers which can lead to breathing difficulties, coughing, exercise intolerance, and heart failure. Patellar Luxation: This is a common problem of small French Poodles which concerns their kneecap. Sebaceous Adenitis: This is a hereditary problem that is common among standard Poodles. The sebaceous glands which are responsible for lubricating the skin and coat are inflamed, so your pup might experience hair loss, flaking, scaling, skin thickening, and sores. Optic Nerve Hypoplasia: This is a congenital problem that prevents the optic nerve to fully develop, leading to blindness. Dogs with this condition do not produce enough platelet so their bleeding time is longer than usual. How Much Is a French Poodle? This price can still change if you plan to buy one who came from a champion bloodline or those with a rare or unique coloration. Apart from the initial cost of purchasing a puppy, you also have to buy some essential items so your pet will thrive inside your home. This includes dog food, crate, bed, food and water bowl, leash and collar, brush, chew toys, training treats, shampoo, urine cleaner, and poop scooper. Also, Poodles need professional grooming due to their coat. Here is a list of breeders you should get in touch with: AKC Marketplace — This is the widest breeder directory that features a lot of Poodle varieties. All the breeders listed in this marketplace are a member of the organization. You can view their website if you need breeder information like phone number and email address. Sturt Your Stuff — This breeding facility is located in an acre ranch outside Wellington, Colorado. All their pups come with pedigree papers and OFA certifications. Find adopting as the better option for you? Carolina Poodle Rescue — You can check out the French Poodles that are ready for adoption in this rescue by simply visiting their website. French Poodles do not smell. In fact, aside from being less shedding, they are also one of the cleanest breeds there is. French Poodles tend to be attached to one person, especially if that individual has been very nice and affectionate to them. The rarest French Poodle color is the apricot. This is a dilute of red which is also the last color to be recognized for the breed. Some apricot French Poodles are so light that they look almost cream. Final Thoughts Although the name French Poodle is already widely used to address the breed that originated in Germany, I would still recommend that you drop the geographical indicator and call the Poodles as they should be called. If you come across a breeder who markets his puppies using the name French Poodle, immediately cancel your transaction. These types of breeders who do not find time to research the origin and proper name usage of the dogs they are selling are obviously just in it for money. My passion for animals started at a very young age as I grow up on a farm with several horses, cows, cats, chickens, and dogs on our property. Leave a Comment.

People love the hypoallergenic coats of Saint Berdoodles, which are usually low-shedding or non-shedding. Saint Berdoodles have wonderful temperaments and are usually great with kids. Saint Berdoodles have hybrid vigor, which results from crossing two purebred dogs. Hybrid vigor typically results in a healthier offspring, and Saint Berdoodles have a much longer life expectancy than a purebred Saint Bernard. Purebred St Bernards usually live years; whereas Saint Berdoodles are usually expected to live years. Anyone who has owned and loved a Saint Bernard might wonder why anyone would get a Saint Berdoodle instead. There's a seven-fold answer for why Saint Berdoodles win the battle for many families. St Bernard vs St Berdoodle Hypoallergenic: St Berdoodles usually have low-to-non shedding coats like poodles and are typically far better for people with allergies than a purebred Saint Bernard, which sheds its coat. Health: Hybrid vigor typically improves a dog's health. There's a reason that humans don't marry our relatives. Saint Berdoodles tend to have fewer health issues than a pure Saint Bernard. Intelligence: Poodles consistently rank as one of the top if not THE top breeds for intelligence. Saint Berdoodles are very quick learners. Trainability: Usually the St Berdoodle's increased intelligence makes them an easy dog to train. Saint Berdoodles love pleasing their owner. Walking Partner: Although Saint Berdoodles are one of the lowest energy doodles, they tend to be more active than a somewhat lethargic purebred Saint Bernard who usually prefers to lounge all day. Although a Saint Berdoodle will not be an active runner like a Goldendoodle, Labradoodle, Aussiedoodle, or Springerdoodle, you can usually take a Saint Berdoodle for a long walk--more so than a purebred Saint Bernard. Nathan Crockett was one of the first breeders to raise top quality Saint Berdoodles. We have people from all over the U. Saint Berdoodle Pricing. Saint Berdoodle Highlights Saint Berdoodles are mixed breed dogs. They are not purebreds like their Saint Bernard or Poodle parents. Two common color combinations of Saint Berdoodles are white-and-brown and white-and-black. They can also be red with white accents or white with red accents. The coats of Saint Berdoodles can take after either parent—wiry and curly for the Poodle, or longer and smooth or rough for the Saint Bernard. Saint Berdoodles are generally pretty well-equipped for cold weather, especially if their coats are similar to Saint Bernards. Saint Berdoodles are great with people of all ages, including kids. The only concern with these dogs is their size with very young children. Be sure to supervise interactions with very young children in case of accidental stepping or sitting. These dogs do not enjoy being alone, so they would love the company of other pets and family members. Saint Berdoodle History Historical records show Poodles being bred in the s and Saint Bernards being bred in the s, both in Europe. Saint Berdoodle breeding is a little more vague, but it looks like they were bred intentionally in the US beginning in the s. The rationale to combine the protectiveness and rescue nature of the Saint Bernard with the intelligence and trainability of the Poodle for a family dog was strong. Between and alone, Saint Bernards rescued over 2, people. Consider adoption if you decide this is the breed for you. Check your local shelters, look up Saint Berdoodle rescues, or check with breed-specific Saint Bernard or Poodle rescues, as they sometimes take in mixed breed dogs and find homes for them. Saint Berdoodle Size Though there is quite a range of sizes for Saint Berdoodles, you can expect a larger dog, in general. Saint Bernards are always large, and Standard Poodles are medium-to-large. In terms of height, the range is typically between 15 and 30 inches. There have been attempts at creating a Miniature Saint Berdoodle, with a weight between 20 and 50 pounds, and a height between 14 and 18 inches, but miniaturizing a Saint Bernard usually involves breeding with a smaller dog, too—most commonly the Cocker Spaniel. You can expect your Saint Berdoodle to be friendly and affectionate, always wanting to be part of family activities. The only reason you may need to supervise interactions with Saint Berdoodles and very small children is just that these dogs are often quite large, so accidents may happen with sitting or stepping. Saint Berdoodle Health Saint Berdoodles are fairly healthy dogs. While mixing breeds can be a way to minimize genetic disorders, the resulting crossbreed can still inherit health problems from the parent breeds. Regular care and annual veterinary check-ups are a good way to keep your dog in prime health. Some of the more common health problems for Saint Berdoodles include: hip dysplasia. Life Span Did You Know? Although a mixed-breed dog can take on any combination of traits from one or both of their parent breeds, well-socialized Saint Berdoodles tend to be affectionate and loving dogs with sweet natures and social personalities. This designer dog breed may not be recognized by the American Kennel Club, but they are still recognized by other notable dog organizations. The Saint Berdoodle is a gentle giant that makes a great addition to any family. Well-socialized, they tend to be social and friendly with charming, cheerful personalities. They also tend to be affectionate, loving, and highly intelligent dogs. These dogs can be good watchdogs as they are initially wary of strangers and will alert you when someone is on the property. Although Saint Berdoodles do tend to have a protective instinct over their family and territory, they tend to be quite social and friendly and do not tend to be aggressive provided they have been properly socialized and trained. Saint Berdoodles are moderately adaptable dogs. Due to their sheer size, they are better suited to larger homes with yards where they can run and roam freely. They could potentially adapt to apartment living if they are given enough exercise, attention, and mental stimulation, but their size will definitely be a challenge in smaller spaces. This dog adapts well to most moderate climates. As a large, fluffy dog, they are also sensitive to heat and can easily overheat. Because a Saint Berdoodle craves attention, bonds closely with their family, and loves being with them, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. A crossbred dog can inherit the potential health concerns common to one, both, or neither of the parent breeds. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of Saint Berdoodle puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to ensure that they are not passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask the breeder about the genetic history of both of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a large dog, the Saint Berdoodle is also at a higher risk of bloat just like both parent breeds. Bloat in dogs can become dangerous quickly and is fatal if the stomach flips. Although the Saint Berdoodle will grow to be a giant dog, they tend to be gentle and highly trainable. Their high intelligence and eagerness to please means they pick up on things quickly and are relatively easy to train. This makes them a good fit for owners of all experience levels. They respond best to positive training methods that are calm and consistent and focused on reward and praise. Puppy training classes are always an option and can be a good opportunity to socialize a puppy, which is even more important in a dog this size. The maintenance your Saint Berdoodle requires will depend completely on the coat they inherit. But, they will require daily brushing and professional grooming every weeks. Once or twice monthly nail trimming is usually enough to keep them from growing too long and causing issues. You can also support your efforts to prevent dental diseases later in life with dental hygiene chews and treats approved by your vet. Saint Berdoodles tend to have a moderate energy level. They will be energetic while playing and require some exercise, but they will be happy to be a couch potato every now and then. Daily walks plus some time to play are usually enough for this big dog. They may not be a good fit for a running partner, but your Saint Berdoodle may enjoy going on hikes with you, taking trips to the dog park, or even going swimming. Just make sure you keep activities low impact until their bones and joints finish growing and developing. A fully-grown Saint Berdoodle usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs pounds. They are one of the largest dog breeds. Saint Berdoodles generally live for years on average. This designer dog breed is most commonly known as a Saint Berdoodle, but they are also sometimes called a Saint Berpoo. Featured Saint Berdoodle Article. At 8, feet above sea level, crossing this part of Europe was extremely dangerous, with drifts of snow as high as 40 feet. During the late s, the monks bred powerful working dogs that were able to locate and rescue those trapped underneath the snow. Supposedly, these dogs never received formal training from the monks, with the younger dogs naturally learning how to perform these heroic rescues from the older dogs instead. The breed has adapted over the years, with other dogs like the Newfoundland being mixed into it. It has become larger than before with looks and personality being emphasized over its rescuing ability. However the St Bernard is still used for this purpose today, alongside being a popular family pet. Poodle Breed History: While commonly associated with the French, the Poodle actually originated as a duck hunter in Germany over years ago. Eventually, Poodles made their way from the lake to the life of luxury as they were the breed of choice by French nobles, and eventually royalty across all of Europe. To this day, the Poodle is still the national dog of France. The Toy Poodle started in the United States in the early 20th century to be a city-dwelling companion dog. On top of that, the gender of the puppy and the genetics of the parents play important factors as well. Saint Berdoodles are rarely, if ever, bred from Toy Poodles. A Miniature Saint Berdoodle will weigh in at around pounds and stand roughly inches tall. The Standard Saint Berdoodle, will weigh approximately pounds and stand about inches tall. Their fur can range anywhere from wavy, like the Saint Bernard to curly like the Poodle and usually is of medium length. A minimum of brushing once per week is required for Saint Berdoodles, with the ideal frequency being every other day if not every day for more curly-haired dogs. Are Saint Berdoodles Hypoallergenic? Do Saint Berdoodles Shed? While this can be true, due to the unpredictability of genetics, there is no guarantee that any particular dog, or litter of dogs will be hypoallergenic. For more details, check out our article on doodle generations as the examples apply directly to Saint Berdoodle dogs. However, due to the genetic diversity from crossing these two breeds, the result may be a lower chance of developing these inherited health concerns. Due to the cost of treating these common health concerns, we highly encourage all dog owners invest in pet insurance. We recommend getting a free online quote from Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. This is adorable but can go overboard if they become too clingy or develop separation anxiety. They are excellent with all kinds of pets as well as children as they are quite calm and gentle. Due to their large size, however, do make sure you keep an eye on them to prevent accidents with small children or elderly family members. While not typically aggressive, a Saint Berdoodle dog takes protecting their family seriously and make good guard dogs. Saint Berdoodles are fairly easy to train as they strive to please and catch on quickly. They are quite sensitive though, so make sure to use positive reinforcement and not an overly harsh or loud tone of voice. Depending how much they take after their Saint Bernard heritage, they can be content with just a short brisk walk each day. In fact, they actually can make good apartment dogs believe it or not!

Many things may trigger an allergic reaction in German Shepherds, including food products like animal proteins, wheat, eggs, soy or milk and environmental pathogens that are present in their everyday environments such as pollen, dust, perfumes or moulds. Some German Shepherds can also be allergic to flea saliva, leading to a condition known as flea-allergic dermatitis. When this condition occurs the dog will develop irritated skin after just one flea bite, leading to incessant itching, red spots on the skin and inflammation. German Shepherds are known for having thick fur, so brushing and checking their skin daily or weekly is vital to keep on top of any changes. They can thrive well indoors or even in apartments if they have sufficient space to run around freely. Care Exercise These active, playful dogs require a lot of physical activities to be healthy and happy. Taking them out for a walk daily under moderate temperature is a good option. In fact when outdoors if the temperature falls below 50 degrees, it is safe to take a coat or sweater for them. They get bored and destructive when left alone for too long. Therefore, give them adequate mental exercise by introducing a lot of interesting toys to them. Grooming Though they shed less, their coats should be groomed at frequent intervals in a week on the basis of the length by using a brush with soft bristles. Bathe them once or twice when needed. It is best to brush your dog before bathing it as this will help in removing loose hairs, also preventing it from getting matted after being wet. In fact, if your pet Chi-Poo has a coat similar to Poodle then brushing at regular intervals as well as clipping is essential. The techniques of rewarding and praising will encourage them to respond in a positive way. Moreover, they should be trained to get over their habit of being attached to a particular individual of the family as his absence may trigger intense separation anxiety in them. They are to be leash trained for their safety. Feeding They should be given the diet of small or toy dogs probably wet food as most of them may face difficulties in digesting the contents of the commonly used dog foods. The resulting dog is smart and confident and is gaining popularity thanks to its high trainability and low-shedding coat. In this guide, we will study everything you need to know about this gorgeous designer dog breed. What is a Chi-Poo? As the name indicates, these cute small dogs with soft wavy hair are obtained by mixing a Miniature or Toy Poodle with a Chihuahua. A Chipoo or Chidoodle may be a small dog but it is cute, smart, loyal, and highly protective of the people it loves. Origins Every breed of dog, even the ChiPoo, has wolves as its ancestors. Humans started domesticating and training wolves nearly 14, years ago. Mostly, people wanted animals to do various jobs and, over the years, they bred different species of wolves which created different dog breeds. The Chihuahua breed originated in Mexico and is one of the ancient dog breeds known to exist since the time of the Toltec tribes. Aztec paintings depict the Chihuahuas as much larger and heavier. Soon the Aztecs started breeding smaller and smaller Chihuahuas and even considered them as their treasure. Today, the smart Poodle is ranked second in the list of most intelligent dog breeds and is also extremely popular due to its hypoallergenic, low-shedding coat. In the s, the demand for cross-breed or designer dogs increased when the first hybrid dog- a Labradoodle — was created by crossing a Poodle with a Labrador Retriever. People loved the Labradoodle for its high intelligence and low-shedding coat. Soon dog lovers were demanding smaller cross-breed dogs. The exact origin of the Chi-Poo is unclear but it might have been existing for nearly 3 decades. Chi-Poo Physical Attributes Chipoo owners are curious to find out how big a Chipoo will get when they first bring home this sweet pup. Chidoodles are not purebred dogs so there are no standards as far as their physical attributes are concerned. Most ChiPoos weigh between 5 and 20 lb. They measure between 5 and 15 inches .Chidoodles have medium coats which can be straight, soft, long, short, or curly. The coat colours seen in the designer breed are cream, white, brown, black, brindle, silver, grey, blue, merle and fawn. Chi-Poos will need different frequencies of grooming based on the kind of coat they inherit. In general, you might want to brush your dog every days and wash or bathe it once a month. Is the Chipoo hypoallergenic? Like most Poodle mixes, the Chipoo sheds a lot less than the average dog breed. Therefore, if an individual is highly allergic to pets, then even the supposedly hypoallergenic Chi-Poo or any Poodle mix for that matter could still trigger an allergic reaction in them. Chi-Poo Temperament and Personality Chidoodles are known to be very smart like their Poodle parent although the Chihuahua is also quite bright. They are confident, highly trainable, and assertive dogs; sometimes overly so. This can hinder training so they need a consistent and experienced dog owner who will show them how to behave appropriately by rewarding their good behaviour. ChiPoos are sure to make excellent pets for families with slightly older children. It is important to understand that these small dogs are quite fragile so it is best not to have very boisterous kids playing roughly around them. Chidoodles make excellent lapdogs. This makes them ideal pets for elderly people but they still need a walk or two every day. This is important to prevent obesity in these small dogs. Are Chipoos yappy? Since Poodles and Chihuahuas are both very reactive and tend to bark at everything in their surroundings, the Chidoodles are also quite the barkers. You might find your little dog barking at every sight or sound. To curb this barking habit, you must train your dog to only bark on cue. You also need to desensitize and socialize your little pet to various experiences from an early age. This is very important to prevent separation anxiety , fear, and other behavioural issues in your Chipoo. Are Chi-Poos aggressive? Like their Chihuahua parent, Chi-Poos can have a wide range of personalities. Like terrier breeds, some Chipoos are in-your-face aggressive but others could be shy or timid. In general, aggression is not an inherent trait in the Chidoodle breed and, as such, must be nipped in the bud. No dog owner must tolerate aggression and must use training, socializing, and desensitization to ensure that their ChiPoo puppy turns out to be a friendly, loving adult dog with a sound temperament. The rates are not standardized or regulated so you will find a lot of variation. In addition to considering your Chi-Poo puppy price, you must also consider the lifetime costs that come with dog ownership. What is the Best Food for a Chipoo? Like all dogs, your Chipoo needs a balanced diet consisting of proteins, healthy fats, and vitamins and minerals. You can choose between high-quality kibble or go in for canned or wet food. In general, kibble may be a better choice since, like all small dogs, the Chi-Poo is prone to dental issues. Kibble with the proper texture can help eliminate plaque and tartar to some extent although your pet will also need daily oral care. You can divide this into 2 or 3 smaller meals although puppies will need at least 4 meals. This is important to prevent digestive issues in your young pet while it is still adjusting to the new surroundings. As your dog passes through different life stages, discuss with your vet the right diet to feed it. Some Chi-Poos are known to have food sensitivities so you may have to choose hypoallergenic dog food or special prescription diets to prevent symptoms. How Long Does a Chipoo Live? What are the Common Health Issues in the Breed? ChiPoos are known to have a lifespan of nearly years. The breed is quite healthy but, like all designer dogs, there is a chance that it inherits afflictions commonly seen in the parent breeds. From time to time, the following health issues are seen in Chidoodles: Idiopathic epilepsy — Since Poodles are known to suffer from idiopathic epilepsy, your Chipoo could inherit this disease. It is characterized by seizures, often without a cause. Luxating patella — Both Chihuahuas and Poodles are known to have this issue. It causes the knee cap to pop out of its normal position causing lameness. Legg-Calve Perthes disease — This results in the degeneration of the femoral head. Hypoglycemia — this condition is seen in Chihuahuas. It causes low blood sugar which can lead to lethargy or dizziness in the affected dogs. Tracheal collapse — this condition is also seen in Chihuahuas and it causes shortness of breath and a permanent honking cough. To minimize the chances of your having to deal with these health issues, only buy your ChiPoo from a reputable breeder. Good breeders conduct appropriate health checks on their parent dogs and only breed ones that have received the appropriate health clearances.
