They are very painful and should be avoided. However, there are many good alternatives to shocking collars including ones that vibrate. Bark Collar Quick Tips Never leave a bark collar on your dog unsupervised Most dogs will know when a collar runs out of batteries. So they are only effective when charged and used properly.
