This is a transitional phase before full adult form takes place. As the Boxer matures, his chest fills out, widening and really becoming a focal point. Flanks are lean and legs are relatively long, which gives him a great profile. Due to the short, packed coat, muscles are often quite visible, which lends to a sleek, strong appearance. Boxers were used extensively in WWII but both American forces and the British army; not only can they look intimidating, they do very well in regard to training for guard, security, surveillance and as messengers. Today's Boxer is a family dog, yet good breeding gives us super confident looking dogs that are great watchdogs, not only just by their appearance, but also loyalty to protect their family. Though white is not accepted in the show right, white Boxers can, of course, be registered. Of these, the majority are unilaterally deaf one ear , as opposed to bilaterally both ears. In regard to fawn and brindle, this does not mean that all Boxers look alike; far from it! Color is, perhaps, the one feature that causes Boxers to have such varied appearances. Fawn can range from a very light tan to a reddish fawn. And brindle which is a pattern of striping can range from light to super dark. In fact, some very heavy brindled Boxer dogs may appear to be a solid dark color. A few even may appear to be black, though this is genetically impossible. This often appears on the chest. It may also be on the legs anywhere from just the paws - referred to as mittens - to almost the entire leg. And if he is almost all white with just a bit of fawn or brindle, he is 'extra flashy'.

Commit to the fact that very regular vacuuming is now part of your regime, and get a specialist pet vacuum cleaner that has the power and the attachments needed to pick up all that hair. This means they do not need to be bathed too often. When you do bathe them, be sure to wash out all the shampoo and conditioner. This can easily be held onto by their hair, and if left behind can irritate their skin. But brushing is only the beginning of the grooming regime these pups need, not all of which will be such a pleasant bonding experience. They need their teeth brushed at least three times a week. Thankfully, this can be partially achieved with dental chew toys. They should also have their ears cleaned regularly, especially if they have the floppy ears of a retriever. Bacteria, yeast, and parasites live in the ear canal. Finally, make sure to trim their nails on a regular basis, at least monthly. This is often a job best left to the experts, as it is easy to cut too deep and hurt your pooch, which will only make them less cooperative next time as they will develop a fear of the clippers pretty quickly. However, the Dremmel is something you should slowly introduce to your dog so he is not fearful of the sound and vibration. Diet Huskadors need a diet that is high in healthy proteins. Since the breed was developed to work as a pack, these dogs need regular exercise, and do best when part of an active and present family, or with at least one other dog that is similar in size. Their owners need to be strong leaders. They generally do not display signs of separation anxiety, but may be mischievous when left alone. Labrador Husky dogs are not always excellent watchdogs, as they rarely bark. Their vocabulary typically consists of a variety of howls. They are not generally protective, so are not likely to be bothered when strangers are present. Their gentle nature makes them great companions for well-behaved young children, but should be introduced early in life to small dogs and cats, as prey drive may cause them to give chase. Hip Dysplasia This condition has been noted in Labrador Huskies. It is characterised by a series of bony malformations in the hips that can be recognised radiographically. Affected individuals are predisposed to developing arthritis later in life, which can be crippling. The breeding of affected dogs and bitches is strongly discouraged, and recommended screening by an expert can help predict this. This is a potentially fatal condition that is usually associated with rapid ingestion of a large meal, although can occur spontaneously. The stomach expands with food and gas dilatation , pinching off the esophagus, which prevents gas from being released orally. The stomach continues to expand, putting pressure on abdominal organs, the diaphragm and lungs, and slowing blood return to the heart, leading to shock. In some cases, the stomach can rotate into an abnormal position volvulus , requiring immediate surgery. This can be fatal if early intervention is not pursued. Prevention is the best approach, including feeding multiple small meals and using special food bowls that slow eating. Alternately, a gastropexy can be performed, which is a surgical procedure where the wall of the stomach is attached to the body wall, preventing rotation. This is usually performed when the individual is young, often at the time of spay or neuter, and can prevent volvulus. However, this does not prevent dilatation and the other preventive measures listed should still be considered. Degenerative Myelopathy This neurologic disease has been noted in Labrador Huskies, and affected individuals are considered to be genetically predisposed. It is characterised by a progressive degeneration of spinal cord tissue in the thoracic spinal region, leading to loss of hind limb function. The degeneration of tissue interrupts message transmission from the brain to the hind limbs, and over a course of years, the lack of neural input to the hind limbs leads to muscle atrophy and inability to walk. There is no effective treatment. In addition, there is no way to diagnose this condition — other than by excluding other potential causes of symptoms. Since it is progressive and generally appears later in life, affected individuals may have already been bred. Until there is a reliable and accessible genetic screening test for the disease, we will continue to see it in affected breeds. Exercise and Activity Levels Labrador Huskies need a lot of exercise and mental stimulation. If bored or neglected, these dogs will find some way to entertain themselves which is often harmful to the household or yard. Daily, vigorous walks are considered minimum, and should be supplemented with opportunities to run and play off the leash. These dogs can excel in agility, which provides excellent mental and physical stimulation. In addition, search and rescue training can be considered for dogs with the appropriate temperament. Grooming Due to their double coat, Labrador Huskies shed continuously, and particularly heavily twice a year. As such, they require brushing at least once a week. Additionally, the household should be vacuumed often, including air intake filters for appliances and HVAC systems. Bathing is not commonly needed, unless the pet is allowed to swim. Regular brushing, if introduced early in life, can be a great opportunity for bonding. It should not be viewed as optional, though. Famous Labrador Huskies There are no famous examples of Labrador Huskies, although there may be celebrated individuals that have saved lives as search-and-rescue dogs. Cross-Breeds During breed development, these dogs were commonly cross-bred with wolves and other Canadian dog breeds. However, there are no currently recognised cross-breeds of the Labrador Husky. Take your Huskador to a number of different locations to familiarize him with other environments. Try to get your pup to meet as many different people, vehicles and animals as possible. Socialization is important to the well-being and good behavior of every breed, even ultra-friendly Labs. Huskies, as mentioned, tend to be a bit more reserved, so socialization is vital for this mix. Training and Behavioral Traits For decades, dog training was all about establishing the pack leader. Leading trainers taught that there were only two choices: either your dog was the alpha, or you were the alpha. However, we know differently now. For a dog, there is no such thing as alpha, or dominance, or pack leader, or even anything similar to any of these concepts. As long as you provide your dog with his daily required resources, your interspecies family life is likely to go quite smoothly overall. In fact, the purebred Siberian Husky breed is known to exhibit some of these traits far more frequently than purebred Labrador Retrievers. This can make training more challenging and time-consuming if your Labsky puppy tends more towards the Husky side of his parentage. But whether such behavioral traits show up in your puppy or not, these behaviors are never about winning dominance over you or becoming the pack leader. These traits are either inbuilt breed-specific characteristics, or fear-based responses to perceived scarcity of needed resources. Ultimately, your puppy is dependent on you for every need that he has. Understanding this can eliminate your concern over alpha-type struggles. Huskador Exercise The Husky Lab mix comes from two active, energetic, working dog breed parents. Boredom can be a real problem for these dogs, as they are literally bred to stay active all day, every day. Often, they perform very physically demanding jobs! So you can pretty much count on the need to keep your Siberian Husky Lab mix dog active and busy. Otherwise, she may develop her own itinerary of fun activities to pursue. Lab Husky mix dogs also have webbed paws and a natural love of water. Swimming is a great activity for them. So is any game of fetch that involves retrieving a bobbing toy from the water. You have a window of about two seconds to correct or reward a dog and whatever happened right before you give them attention or pet them is what the dog thinks the petting is for. This is one of the most common mistakes I see people make with thier dogs. I pointed this out as well as sharing a number of other dog behavior tips throughout this session. Dogs need physical or mental stimulation every couple of hours, otherwise they get bored which usually leads them towards unwanted behaviors like chewing, barking or jumping up. If you want a dog to stop jumping up on people, you have to keep them mentally and physically stimulated, usually doing somehting for them every hours. Ope gets to sleep with his guardians in their bed, but recently has started to try to take positions in the bed that make sleeping a challenge for the humans. I showed the humans a simple way to condition Ope to want to sit and lay down in the portion of the bed that they want him to sleep in. This involves calling him up onto the bed, using a marker word to communicate when he got to the desired position and then giving him a treat. Because the bed is on a frame and Ope has shorter legs, this exercise of calling him up and down off of the bed quickly wiped him out. I recommended that the guardians practice this bed exercise a few times a day, especially anytime that he starts to indicate that he has too much energy like jumping up on guests, zooming around the room, etc. The guardians can also practice this exercise in advance of zoom calls or anything else that they need to do an undisturbed. Proactively getting your puppy or adult dog exercise or mental stimulation is a very simple and effective dog behavior trick many dog behaviorists use. I also showed the guardians how they could use delayed gratification to help the dog practice a little self-restraint and self-control. Anytime you have a dog that likes to jump up on people or engage in unwanted behaviors, finding ways for them to practice restraining themselves is a great way to help a dog develop self-control.
