After the creation of the People's Republic of China, the dog population in the country was nearly eradicated and brought to zero. They are believed to be related to the Tibetan Mastiff. They were prized by the Emperors of China and lived in luxurious accommodations, sometimes even being guarded by soldiers. In the latter s and early s, China began trading with European countries. It is thought that they first came to Europe with the Dutch traders, who named the breed Mopshond. The name Mopshond is a name still used today. Pugs quickly became favorites of royal households throughout Europe, and even played a role in the history of many of these families. In Holland, the Pug became the official dog of the House of Orange after a Pug reportedly saved the life of William, Prince of Orange, by giving him a warning that the Spaniards were approaching in .In the early s, Pugs were standardized as a breed with two lines becoming dominant in England. The other line was developed by Lord and Lady Willoughby d'Eresby, and was founded on dogs imported from Russia or Hungary. She is 23 pounds of muscle and personality, always running and trying to play with other dogs. She much prefers canine attention to human attention, when given the choice. In the absence of other dogs, she can't stay away from her humans for more than 3 minutes. She is not fond of going into her case, but she always loves being with us at the final destination and the attention she gets en route. She has become quite the well-traveled dog. He's quite the little nibbler! He is registered. His father was a champion Shar-Pei and his mother a champion Pug. His registered name is Wendell E. He is an absolute blessing. He is an extremely goofy dog—he always seems to know when we need cheering up! We have both cats and dogs in our home and he gets along with everyone. He never meets a stranger and gets rather offended if a passerby doesn't stop to tell him hello! He can be a little hard headed at times. He is a good sport, though—letting his mommies dress him up and not putting up a fight. Rudy is a very rambunctious puppy and loves to terrorize our two 5-year-old Pugs. Rudy is very headstrong but is a quick learner.
