The German Shepherd is one of the most versatile, well-recognized, and popular dog breeds in the world. The modern German Shepherd is descended from a family of various German herding dogs. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. Training assistance will help you grow in experience and build a strong bond between you and your German Shepherd puppy, which is essential. Also, the GSD has a thirst for training and fulfillment. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. With their versatility and athleticism, you can try a lot of different activities when puppies finish growing and they are cleared for higher-impact things. A fully-grown German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. German Shepherds generally live for years on average. Corporal Duncan brought him back to the United States and Rin-Tin-Tin became one of the most famous dog actors in history. Featured German Shepherd Article. The 6-year-old pooch is the star of a Fall Out Boy music video and is a New York Times best-selling author — along with his owner, Leslie Mosier, that is — and that only scratches the surface of his impressive resume. However, Mosier is quick to point out that Doug is also just a happy little pug. And, for her, that fact alone is a dream come true. Mosier, who lives in Tennessee, brought Doug home as a puppy in the summer of .In her job at a record label and artist management company, she was already in charge of managing the social media pages of several clients. While this taught her skills that would eventually help make Doug a star, it also left her with little interest in spending her free time on social media — at first, anyway. By July , though, she gave in to the lure of Instagram and created a personal account. Two things were abundantly clear: Doug was a natural in front of the camera, and his pictures were the most popular ones on her account. On my account at the time, it might get to 1, likes. In the fall of , one of her emails found its way into the inbox of Brian Koerber, a reporter for the digital content outlet Mashable. One look at her inbox makes it clear that their mission is being accomplished. Susan Segrest of New York City has one such story. They shot a short video of Doug with the balloon, and, to their surprise, that simple footage took the internet by storm — it now has 21 million views on Facebook. When pressed to name a career highlight, Mosier and Chianelli agree: Shakira. But his team always places his well-being first. Hitting creative roadblocks is her biggest challenge. And that means acting quickly, like in January, when a photo of an egg broke the world record for the most Instagram likes, previously held by Kylie Jenner. Mosier and Chianelli set up every shot using a plush pug toy in his place for lighting when needed before bringing in Doug, which keeps his part quick and fun. This year will also see the launch of The Doug the Pug Foundation, benefiting children with cancer. So, we just let her live her best cat life. And, yes — much of it was captured and shared on Instagram. Well, that is, if every Pug has 12 million social media followers, poses with celebrities on the reg and makes special appearances on TV shows and music videos. How did Doug go from housepet to social media sensation? I always wanted a Pug and, funny enough, I always wanted a pug named Doug. So, when I was in college in Nashville, it finally felt like the right time for me to get my first dog. I got Doug from a reputable breeder when he was 8 weeks old. I had always wanted a pug named Doug! I would come home after work and take photos of Doug. So, it was just a really fun hobby, and it turned into something really awesome. What was the video that originally went viral? It was a video of Doug running around a park with a pug balloon attached to his waist. After that video went viral, we started posting more videos of him doing spoofs of popular TV shows and movies. How did you get Doug so used to the camera? He took to the camera, literally, the second I brought him home for the first time. Whenever I took my phone or the camera out, he would look directly into the lens. And when I would bring out a shirt or an outfit for him to put on, he would be excited to put it on. So, he was definitely a natural. He turns on right when the camera is on, and he just knows what to do and what not to do. First and foremost, capturing their personality is really key. Just figure out what makes them unique and special, and work around that and what they like to do. Doug clearly enjoys an amazing life. Doug went to her house, and she was just really sweet. That was a really cool [experience]. Doug and his sister, Fiona, living their best lives. So, Doug spends his days napping and playing with his kitten sister, Fiona, hanging out in our backyard, just going to the park and doing things like a normal dog. Did Doug take to Fiona right away? Or was there a little bit of jealousy with him being the only child initially? His absolute favorite toy is his hedgehog toy. We have to travel with it [and] bring it everywhere. For treats, he eats grilled beef liver dehydrated dog treats. What would people be most surprised to know about Doug? When he poses next to it, he never tries to go in and take a bite? There are times when he definitely begs, but he knows to just sit and look at the camera. How has it been for Doug to be a part of the Facebook Watch show? Doug posing with his keychains. Dogs can finally join in on the Doug the Pug fun. Definitely just seeing how happy he makes people. The lavender shampoo is very soothing, and the lemongrass is incredible for protection against outdoor pests. We have used them on him for years, and we have never found anything that works the way that they do. The Calm Balm is an incredible salve that I even honestly use on myself! These salves work together in tandem, with one treating dry conditions and one treating wet. A post shared by Doug The Pug itsdougthepug What made you decide to launch a product line? Why was now the right time to do so? We had a big health scare with Doug the Pug a few years back. He developed something called immune-mediated thrombocytopenia. His immune system almost killed him because of the allergy medication he was on. Luckily, after stopping the medication and a lengthy stay in the ER, he was able to bounce back and no longer has the condition. This experience opened our eyes to the importance of giving him all-natural, non-toxic products for his day-to-day needs. It also led to us finding a health team for Doug: an herbalist, acupuncturist, chiropractor, you name it. We completely revamped his food, grooming, and supplement protocol to reflect a more fresh lifestyle. His coat became softer and shinier, he does not have much graying for his age, and best of all, he is happy and running around like a puppy. I also personally have a disease called endometriosis, which has forced me to re-examine the quality of products in our home. It turns out ingredients, like synthetic fragrances, are detrimental to not only my personal hormone health, but to our dogs, too. Doug has taught me a beautiful gift of going for our dreams, and this was a dream we had talked about for a while. Courtesy of nonipup Why did you want to get into grooming products specifically? Once we saw how well these formulas worked on our Dougie, we knew we had to share them with the world and give people a clean and trustworthy option. The exciting thing about Nonipup is that we have big plans to expand beyond grooming and develop Doug-approved and tested supplements. So, stay tuned! What is special about Nonipup as a Doug the Pug brand? Doug recently shared that he lost over five pounds, and the response from the dog community has been amazing. We all want the best for our dogs, but sometimes it can be hard to sift through all that is out there. We know that Doug The Pug is a trusted voice with a large platform, and we take immense pride in having Nonipup be a trustworthy brand that we can recommend. A post shared by Leslie Mosier lesliemosier Has Doug been part of the development process? All of these products have been tested on Doug for years and once we saw the magic of them, it gave us the confidence to start an entire new brand around it. What are you most excited about with this launch? I am truly excited about the salves getting into the hands of dog owners and seeing the before and after photos. I know others will feel the same when they get their hands on them! Plus, they smell so good.
Their ears will curl, at the time they are teething, and there will be a slight change in the appearance of their ears. You should set your expectation about this phase in their development. What to do instead? When your pup is teething, they will feel discomfort and will be in a bit of pain, so you should expect them to bite on things around the house. For you to stop this from happening, provide your pup with teething rings and gels to ease their discomfort and their urge to nip things, such as your shoes, the remote control, even the furniture. A Frenchie will have 28 baby teeth at the start, and then this will be replaced starting when they are around three months old. Expect them to be fussy and restless until they have all their 42 adult teeth out. When will a French Bulldogs ears straighten out? The big, bat-ear shape you are expecting will appear. This should not be something that you should worry about and let it develop naturally. There is nothing better but to let it run its course and wait for the bat-like ears to appear. It will not help at all if you worry about the way your dog looks instead of worrying about his teething progression. Their ears are exposed to environmental allergens, dust, dirt, among others. Since they have erect ears that are all standing up , so it is all open and vulnerable. It will not take too much of your time and may last for a minute or two. You only need to relax and calm your pooch, and you can do so by giving treats and being gentle while you are doing the task. You can soak it in a solution of sodium chloride, or if you are not keen on using this solution, you can also use wet wipes. Be careful not to scrub the layer of their ears as it can also get irritated with too much scrubbing or rubbing. Before finishing the task, let your puppy have his treat and pat him on the head while praising him. This will remind him that ear-cleaning is a pleasant activity, and he will look forward to it next time and will not get wary of it. Anything that smells off should be something that you should investigate. When you notice them frequently shaking their head and if there is any redness in their ears , it is something that you should get a vet to check. You can clean their ears once a month, or if they frequently run outside and rub their head and body in the grass, you can check for small pieces of material left in their ears. An ear infection is not uncommon with this breed, and you will notice a strong smell emitting from their ears and this is to be treated with antifungal medicine plus an ear cleaning solution that the vet may advise. This is not to be taken lightly cause ear yeast infection in Frenchie can make them uncomfortable. It is not uncommon for a Frenchie to still have curled ears after 6 months. However, if it is past a year of their ears still curling backward, this may mean poor development, or your pooch may lack calcium. What can you do? Talk to the Breeder By doing so, you will know whether there is a hereditary issue with your dog. If your vet found out the issue or for any calcium deficiency, he may advise a calcium injection or food rich in calcium. Cottage cheese is low in salt but high in calcium, it can be given as a treat to your pup in small portions. Yogurt, milk, and fish are also some of the selections that may be advised, provided your dog is not allergic to any foods mentioned. Some dog owners research online, and they follow what they read on social media instead of going to the vet for a proper diagnosis. Yes, you only want your dog to look like a French Bulldog and not a dog with droopy ears on one side and one ear standing straight on the other. There is a danger of giving them too much calcium, which can lead to further problems such as arthritis, joint problems, and bone spurts in your pup. All you can do is wait until your pup is over with the teething process and for their ears to erect by themselves in due time. Most recent. Experienced owners will be aware that this is a completely natural occurrence and nothing to worry about. So, if this is your first pup, start by understanding that you are not alone and every Frenchie parent will deal with this to some degree. What is important is how you deal with the underlying causes of ear curling and that you are patient in waiting for them to correct themselves. What causes French Bulldog ear tips to curl like this? There is nothing wrong with the ears. Instead, the ears will curl and droop around the time that Frenchies start teething. Focus on the teething rather than the shape of the ears. Your dog could go through some pain and discomfort during this period as their teeth come in. They start with 28 baby teeth and will have these teeth if you buy them from a breeder at around 2 months old. At around 3 months old, their adult teeth will start to develop and push out the baby teeth. Furthermore, there are 42 of these adult teeth to come through. So, it is no surprise if your pup starts fussing. Focus on providing care and relief for your pup to ease the pain of teething and help them through this period. It should only take a couple of months for the teeth to all come through, but that is still a long time dealing with discomfort. Teething rings and gels can help a lot. Frozen carrots can be a lifesaver for instant healthy teething option. Also, remember that ear infections are a much bigger problem for Frenchies. Make sure to check them regularly for signs of blockages, discharges, or any other changes. Wipe them regularly but get professional help if you think that there is an infection. A dark discharge and bad smell are common signs. Will their ears straighten out again? Yes, the ears will eventually develop into the big bat-ear shape we expect from this breed. Once the teething process is over, and your pet is over that stage of their development, you should start to notice a change. On average, this will occur around the 4-month mark. What can I do to help their ears straighten out? The best thing that you can do is to let things develop naturally. Sooner or later, the ears will become those erect bat-ears that you expect from a Frenchie. Unfortunately, you will find other guides out there with conflicting advice on the matter. We urge you not to follow any guidance that involves taping or any other unnatural manipulation of the ears. It will happen when it is meant to. So, this could mean that your dog ends up with floppy ears for longer than the average of 4 months. If it is more than a year, or there are other signs of poor development, there could be an issue with calcium deficiency. This is why the ears get so floppy around the time of teething. Once teething is over, levels should even out again as long as there is enough calcium in their diet. If the ears stay floppy and you have other concerns about their growth and development, you can talk to your vet about calcium supplementation. They can also help you with tips and products for teething. This is completely normal and they will eventually become erect again after the teething process is over. Instead, focus on how you can make the teething process better for your pet. Your Frenchie is still just as healthy and just as awesome. To understand more, keep reading. The only way to know for sure why their ears are curling back is to do some investigation yourself. If they do, then it could be a genetic thing. Check with your vet Check if your dog has any developmental issues that may be causing their ears to curl back or go down. If they do, your vet may recommend some medications or injections. Check them yourself Can you see any signs of trauma to the ears? Have they fallen down the stairs lately, for example? What can you do to help your French Bulldog Ears to stand up again? Give Them Foods rich in calcium This can help their ears stand up during the teething period by giving them more calcium to help the teething process and help their ear cartilage get stronger which helps it stand up. Your dog can get more calcium in their diet from foods like cottage cheese, yogurt, and goat cheese. Some dog owners claim that goat cheese is the best source of calcium for dogs, but there is no scientific proof of that. Start small, give them just one spoon of yogurt with their dinner to check if they are okay with it, and keep an eye on them for the following 24 hours. Some dogs can have a degree of lactose intolerant and the symptoms can vary from small things like being slightly lazier than normal to rashes to vomiting and diarrhea, and if you notice any of these signs, you should take them to the vet. Consider Giving them Joint Supplements So, while I would recommend against using calcium supplements, I can actually suggest you try out joint supplements since they are helpful to things other than teething and they are completely safe to use. He recommended these two for my Frenchies:. Should you take him to a vet then? They could be floppy and curled. One ear may also be standing up while the other is loosely hanging. They could be really strange! The bottom line is, this should not cause you to panic. They have something to do with the teething process. In general, French Bulldogs go through this particular process from the time they are around 2-weeks old up to 8 months. But then again, there is nothing that you need to worry about. Teething and Ear Curling Try this: While you are chewing, watch and feel what happens to the temple regions. They are also moving, right? The same pulsating movements occur when your French Bulldog bites down. The muscles in the area are working, and may cause strain to the muscles of the ears. This is why they tend to lose their shape as well as their strength to erect. But they will definitely come back up once your Frenchie is done teething. How Smart Are French Bulldogs? Furthermore, when a puppy is teething, his calcium requirements increase too as this is needed by the different parts of his body to develop. Sometimes, this essential mineral is not evenly distributed. This is another reason why his ears may droop or fold back. Aside from floppy or droopy ears, other signs that your pet is going through the process of teething include excessive chewing he will try to chew on just about anything around him , loose milk teeth, blood spots, drooling, inflamed gums, and mild fever. You just have to give it some time. Why is my Frenchie losing hair? One of the most popular methods used by breeders is taping. This time, make it firmer. Otherwise, you can repeat the same process for another 5 days. Do you own a French Bulldog with long legs? Take note that the results of taping may differ from one dog to another. For some, this technique only needs to be done once to take effect while others require repeating the process. There are also some Frenchies that may not respond to this strategy. Will yogurt help ears to stand up? So you might be wondering at this point if there are certain food items that can help the ears to erect by themselves. Some forums may suggest that giving your Frenchie things, like yogurt and cheese, which are rich in calcium, can help with this matter. But the truth is, this is not backed by science. It may or may not assist. What human food can French bulldogs eat? Check these 32 foods out! The coldness will also provide some kind of relief to his sore gums. Work Him Out Exercising is also an excellent way to entertain your puppy. If you notice an odd odor, then it is most likely that an infection is starting. With this, you have to seek the assistance of a vet, particularly if there is a dark-colored discharge. Look for Other Signs Aside from a stinky smell, ear problems may also show other signs, such as frequent scratching, redness or swelling, hard skin inside or around the ears, and hair loss in that particular region. If you see any of these signs, then be sure to make a trip to the vet. When do French Bulldogs go into heat? When doing so, though, do not be too harsh. You can make use of a gentle solution that can help make this task easier. If you are unsure of what kind of cleaning solution and tools to use, it would be best to ask your vet. Closing Thoughts Curled ears in French Bulldogs, and any other breed of canine, is something that is natural as they go through the teething process. This should not alarm you. You can try taping them, but usually, they will rise on their own once your pet has gone through the teething stage. As you wait for your Frenchie to achieve those bat ears, focus on helping him instead to relieve the discomfort due to teething. You also have to make sure that his ears are healthy. French Bulldog ears whilst teething are rolled back. They reduce the risk of ear infection. What are the health concerns? When a French Bulldog has floppy ears, this dog is likely to develop ear infections. When their ears are folded, not much air can flow. As a result, moisture becomes trapped in the ear canal. This becomes a breeding ground for yeast and bacteria, which can lead to infection. Not every Frenchie will have completely straight ears. Some may turn down at the very tip, and some may flop over at the breaking point midway up the ear. The pinna is a part of the outer ear that you can see. By doing so, they will stand up on their own eventually. If you start early, it may only take weeks for the ears to stand on their own. But if you start late when your pooch is at 4 months old , it will take longer or it may not happen. Sports tape: Zonas Tape 1-inch wide. In both cases, I would recommend applying two or three layers for proper support. Also, you are less likely to pull out hair with vertical taping. The Horizontal Ear Taping Method: You place the tape horizontally around the ear at the natural breaking point. It can be a little more irritating and might not offer enough support for larger ears. Wipe it with alcohol to remove the dirt and natural oils. Let the ears dry completely. Apply the tape splints. Vertical Method: from the base of the ear up to the tip of the pinna. Horizontal Method: alongside the natural breaking point of the ear. Trim the tape following the shape of the ear to prevent your dog or any other dog chewing on it. Apply another layer and trim it. In total, apply two or three layers of tape to provide the necessary support. You will have to replace the tape as needed. Usually, every couple of days you will have to reapply the tape. Also, beware that the tape can cause irritation on the back of the ears and your pup will definitely want to scratch it off. French Bulldog dog ears are more sensitive than average dog ears and are prone to ear infections due to the following reasons: Brachycephalic breed traits: Their flat compressed head has a direct impact on their ear canals. Their narrower ear canals provide for a wet, warm, moist, environment ideal for bacteria and yeast to flourish and grow. Food allergies: Processed foods can cause allergies on dogs and French Bulldogs are no exception. Skin allergies: This is also known as atopic allergic dermatitis, which can be caused by environmental allergens. Wax build-up: Some dogs produce more wax and on a more regular basis. Failing to remove the natural wax that the ears generate results in an excess of wax that will cause discomfort to your dog, even pain. Ear Infection Signs The most common signs of ear infection are: Redness. Itchy ears your dog shakes his head and scratches his ears. Off-colour discharge, black or yellowish not brown wax. Swelling or inflammation ears are hot to the touch. Odour bad smell. Pain when the ears are touched. If your French Bulldog has any of these signs, you should take him to the vet for a check-up so he receives the appropriate treatment. Ear Infection Treatment The treatment will depend on the type of infection and if your dog has any damage in the ear canal. Your vet might give you an ointment or drops to treat the infection. In some cases, oral medications are necessary such as antibiotics, anti-yeast, or anti-inflammatory pills. However, before giving your dog any prescribed medication, you should clean his ears first. The severity. How your dog responds to the treatment. Your vet should schedule a follow-up appointment to make sure that the medication is working and the infection is cleared. Ear Infection Prevention How do you go about preventing your French Bulldog from contracting an ear infection? By doing so, you also prevent ear mites, bad ear smell and itchy or red ears. Do you use a Bat Hat? You can either go for a homemade solution like water and vinegar mix very diluted solution to reduce the sting or get an alcohol free ear cleaner. Plus, the sting will likely discourage your pup from sitting down quietly during the next ear cleaning session. Also, look for an ear cleaning product that has ingredients that will clean off dead cells and will help break up the earwax. They should be mildly acidic to help kill bacteria and be able to evaporate quickly. Insider Tip: Water-based solutions or homemade ones have a disadvantage too. Some dog parents prefer grooming wipes , which can be also free of alcohol, parabens and harsh chemicals. Note: If your French Bulldog has already been diagnosed with an ear infection, your vet may prescribe a specific ear cleaner with antibacterial properties. Also, they will soak up any excess cleaner or moisture after you apply an ear cleaner solution. This can be the case if your Frenchie happens to shake or move unexpectedly. The powder helps absorb excess moisture and also soothe itchy or irritated ears. Coconut oil, on the other hand, has antiseptic properties that reduce itchiness and also has hydrating properties to combat dryness. I wrote it having Bostons in mind, but it works for Frenchies too. Plus, French Bulldogs and Boston Terriers have the same food allergies, so the tips are highly applicable for both breeds. To avoid making a mess i. During warmer months, I prefer to do most of the grooming outdoors, in the garden. I found myself following my Foster Westie around the garden whilst trying to clean his ears, for instance. You want to make sure that the ears are only dirty, not red or with discharge. Infections cannot be treated with ear cleaning alone, you will need a prescription from the vet. However, if both ears look normal and healthy, you can proceed with the cleaning. Insider Tip: Heads up! Some dogs shake their heads a lot during grooming, especially when ear cleaning is involved! However, try to hold him still until you have finished cleaning one ear. Once the ear is full of cleaning solution, gently massage the base of the ear for 30 seconds. Insider Tip: You can either do both ears at the same time or fully finish cleaning one before you start on the other one. Keeping the ears free of moisture is critical in preventing infection. If the ear still looks dirty after this step step 4 , you may want to repeat the process until you have removed all of the wax. If your dog has an ear infection, now is the time to apply any prescribed cleaning solution or medication by your vet. You can take a break between ears and reward him then, or reward your pup after every step. This depends on how comfortable and how much encouragement your pooch needs. By doing so, you are encouraging his good behaviour and setting a good tone for future ear cleaning sessions. The goal is for your dog to have a positive association with the ear cleaning routine. Insider Tip: If your Frenchie swims or likes playing with water, you should clean and dry his ears afterwards to prevent any ear problems. Pin 0 Shares When we welcomed Claude the Frenchie into our family a few years ago, we had never owned a dog before. It was a huge learning curve, and one particular memory still stands out today… what was the meaning of our French Bulldogs ears, what is the meaning when they go back, would they always stand up straight? First things first; French Bulldogs have very static ears. But they will go back when they are scared, nervous, or being submissive of their master which is not the same as being scared. Did You Know: Some young puppies will have floppy ears, and it can take some time for them to go back and stand up. You can read more about how and why this happens in this guide to Frenchie ears standing up and what to expect. If we use our own Frenchie Claude as an example, he cannot position his ears fully back against his head like other dog breeds can do. But he can still position his ears back enough for you to notice. So, what is the meaning when a dog positions its ears back, and how does this relate to French Bulldogs? For example, you can see a photo of Claude with his ears back after he had a bath. He was quite scared, as this was one of the first times we had ever used a shower to get rid of excessive mud. If your dog has ears that are ever so slightly back, it could indicate they are in a playful mood. French Bulldog ears can also position their ears back when they are scared and frightened. If your Frenchie is fearful, take a look at the base of the ear to look for any backwards shifts. This could be a sign that they are scared and unhappy. For example, I recently read a post on Facebook from a lady who owns a Frenchie. Give him a few days to start feeling safe and more like himself again. Speak to him in a soft calm voice and get down to his level when approaching him. Give lots of love and vet approved treats. You will both get through and heal from this. So, give him lots of gentle love and reassurance that he is safe. It will take time for you both to get through such a terrible trauma. His not blaming you. Just being on his guard. He will come good. Lots of love and affection to make him feel at ease. So, how can you tell how your Frenchie is feeling, and are there any signs to look out for to make sure they are happy and healthy? Give them lots of reassurance, keep them calm, and offer lots of love. Within a short period of time their ears should stop going back… I promise you. Handy Hint: You might also be interested in my new guide to French Bulldog deafness. A high proportion of Frenchies can suffer with hearing loss from birth, and it will often depend on the color of their hair. They will be soft and floppy when born. In fact, many breeders will say you should even be worried about floppy ear development until the 8-month mark 32 weeks , as puppies all develop at different rates. But what is the reason for all of this, and what can you do about a Frenchie with floppy ears? Frenchies have very big ears when they are puppies. They look completely out of proportion as you can see in this photo of our dog Claude when he was younger compared to being an adult — he was 7 months old in this shot on the left, and 3 years on the right, and had no issue with his ear development. Our Frenchie never had floppy ears. As you can imagine, with ears this big and heavy, it takes a lot of strong ear cartilage to make them stand up and not flop down. So why do some French Bulldogs have floppy ears, and other not? This is the barometer that Frenchie experts use with regards to floppy ears. As the puppy progresses through the teething stage, the cartilage grows strong enough to keep the ears standing up versus their current floppy appearance. Handy Hint: To find out more about teething and how long it takes, read the guide to Frenchie teething that I previously published. They can even go up and down The floppy ears can go up and come back down again during the teething period. Just wait until your Frenchie has stopped teething — and this can be as old as 7 to 8 months — before you make any judgements. Their ears could be floppy, erect, and floppy again at during this time. The first thing I would do is ask the breeder if floppy ears is a hereditary thing. When should you be worried? If you fall into that category, when it the time to panic and take action? Not necessarily, but it might be wise to start the fix before this date… and here are some ways you can do so — most people will start the fixes at around 5 to 6 months. The ideas below are all ones that I have been found via social media and blog posts. All of the methods below should be used before you consider taping. You can start doing this from the age your puppy comes home to live with you from 8 weeks and on: 1. Consult with you vet first Assuming you have spoken to the breeder and ruled out any hereditary ear floppiness, you should talk with your vet first… before you even taking the online advice from a blog, even like mine! Get the vet to do a health check-up to see if there are any development issues. These can include bone spurts, arthritis and joint problems in a growing Frenchie puppy. Instead, give your puppy small amounts of foods such as cottage cheese or yogurt. These are said to encourage calcium growth in their ears. I have heard that this could be a myth though, so ask your vet. Add a cartilage encouraging supplement to their diet Some owners swear by a supplement called glucosamine. You can buy these tablets on Amazon , which are the number 1 supplement according to vets. Give them chew toys Chewing not only helps your Frenchie with teething but the physical act can also strengthen muscle essential for ear development. Dogs have a temporalis muscle at the top of their jaw and under their ear. Strong temporalis muscle helps ear to stand up… therefore, lots of chewing means a reduction in floppy ears. Handy Hint: Find out what chew toys I recommend for Frenchies with this selection of the best chewing toys on the market. I personally think Frenchies with floppy ears look cute, but, each to their own… people who have done this successfully have done so around the 5 to 6-month age. Other reasons for floppy ears Whilst most French Bulldog ears will become erect after the teething phases, there will be some cases where floppy ears, either as a pair or just one, will remain floppy after this point and will never fix. Your vet will be able to diagnose and explain more, but here are the reasons other than teething I found for floppy Frenchie ears: Genetics and breeding: There is a small market for Frenchies with floppy ears. Also known as French Bulldogs with rose ears, breeders will try to engineer puppies with ears that never stand up. This is what it means if you see Frenchies with rose ears for sale. Injury: Frenchie puppies are extremely energetic and can get themselves into various scrapes, some of which could be traumatic to the ears. An ear could get cut, squeezed, or suffer some form of trauma — this can often result in a French Bulldog with one floppy ear only. Frenchie puppies are born deaf with sealed shut ears. After 3 weeks, their ears will start to open. Frenchie ears will stand up between the ages of 5 to 15 weeks. Frenchies will stop teething at around 7 to 8 months. During this period ears can be floppy, up, down, and in varying orders! Frenchie ears should, in most cases, all stand up after 8 months at the latest. After a couple of weeks went back up and never done again. They are a living creature, not a show piece. Leave their ears alone and if one is a bit floppy, just embrace the difference as it will be part of their character! They were up and down as a puppy but eventually never went up again. We think he looks amazing though and love him to bits. She had her dog DNA tested and he had a slight bit of pug in him! They go back up with time. Like ourselves, dogs are not designed to be perfect, how saddening this topic is.

The reason eyelids are sealed shut is to form a protective barrier for the fragile developing eye. This helps to protect them from any foreign object, bright lights, bacteria or any other microorganism that can cause disease or damage. In the same way puppies ear canals are closed at birth to make them effectively deaf. This is a protective barrier to protect the fragile underdeveloped machinery needed to hear. In a mature ear the pressure caused by sound will mechanically move structures in the ear. German Shepherd puppies are highly dependent upon their noses. Puppies navigate by smell from the moment they are born. This helps them to identify their mom, the very important milk supply, siblings and surroundings. Newborn puppies are born with a fur coat however they cannot control their own body temperature yet. To keep them warm they are dependant on their mothers or another heat source. If you live in a cooler climate installing a heat lamp would be ideal to help keep the puppies nice and warm. Germans Shepherds make amazing mothers and will be relied on a lot at this stage. Mother dogs will only leave their newborn puppies to go to the toilet, eat and drink. However, when mom has gone the newborn puppies are not completely useless. They are able to use their front paws to drag themselves towards a heat source. When mom is away the puppies will crawl together to preserve their body heat. Along with being able to drag themselves to a heat source newborn puppies are also able to drag themselves to their mothers to locate the milk supply. They will move their heads around to search for a nipple, latch on and suck strongly. Newborn puppies are not born with teeth these will also develop in the next several weeks. Other than the above puppies are completely dependent upon the care of their dedicated mom. Newborn puppies have little control over the rear end of their bodies. To encourage their pups to pass urine and bowel movements the mom will lick their bottoms. Anything produced mom will then lick up and swallow to keep her puppies and nest clean. Some pups will even double their birth weight! Your German Shepherd puppy will still be highly dependent upon their mom at this stage. Beneath all their fur the vital organs will be working hard to mature. This includes the eyes. Your puppy will not be ready to open their eyes yet but lots of changes are taking place to prepare them for grand opening. The ear canals will begin to open around the same time as the eyes. When the ear canals do open, the ears are much more formed than the eyes are at this point in time. Their eyesight usually takes around 8 weeks to reach its full potential. When their eyes become wider, they will reveal blueish-gray eyes which are hazy in appearance. Their eyesight will continue to develop until around 8 weeks old. The ear canals will also open around 2 weeks. The puppies hearing has been developing much quicker than their eyesight and they will be able to hear most things by the time their ear canals fully open. However, their amazing hearing ability will continue to enhance over the next several weeks. At the moment your German Shepherd puppy will have cute floppy ears. Their adorable tall ears can come up anywhere between 8 weeks and 6 months of age. Floppy ears are common until your German Shepherd finishes teething. By then the ear cartilage will become strong and hard enough for the ears to stand up permanently. Now is a good time to start handling the puppies and get them used to your voice. Most puppies are wormed for the first time when they are 2 weeks old. All this development has happened so quickly, but things are about to get even more exciting. Between 2 and 4 weeks your German Shepherd puppy will begin to stand up this is when the real fun begins. Puppies milky teeth will also start to develop between 2 to 4 weeks. These sharp little teeth will remain until about weeks of age. These little daggers play an important role during the weaning process. Even the most patient moms will struggle to nurse with these sharp painful teeth. This reluctance to nurse will prompt the German Shepherds to seek alternative food sources. These sharp teeth will then help to make up for the lack of jaw strength when eating solid foods. Finally, these sharp puppy teeth play an important role in teaching the pups to gauge their bite pressure when playing with their mom and siblings. This is an essential life lesson that enables our powerful German Shepherds to become safer companions as they mature into strong adult dogs. During the last few weeks mom has done an amazing job of getting her babies strong and their mobility will have come on leaps and bounds well not quite yet but by 3 weeks of age your German Shepherd puppy will begin to trotter around. Most 3 week old German Shepherd puppies can stand and sit. With their baby teeth starting to cut through a lot of breeders. Especially those with large litters will start introducing some solid foods. This helps relieve some of the pressure for the devoted German Shepherd mom. When weaning puppies, you need to start off by soaking their food in either water or puppy milk replacement formula to make it mushy and more comfortable for them to eat. As they start to interact and play with their siblings their personalities will really start to show. You may also notice them starting to playfully growl at each other. At 3 weeks old it will become easier to start identifying different members of the pack. Breeders and moms will be kept on their toes and paws over the next few weeks. As the pups start getting more confident on their feet they will be running around and playing enthusiastically. At 4 weeks old they will begin to wag their adorable little tails. With solid food becoming a major part of their diet the pups will be passing bigger bowel movements. They will be able to show more control of their bowel movements as they take themselves away from their brothers and sisters to perform their business. At this stage mom will be taking a much more relaxed approach to parenting and there will be a lot more for the breeder to clear up. By this point mealtimes are a messy process. If it is warm and safe enough to do so we would recommend taking the pups out in the yard for feeding. German Shepherd puppies are becoming a lot stronger at vocalisations by 4 weeks old. When mom returns to her babies the litter will noisily greet her. Around 4 weeks of age your puppies will need to be wormed again. From this week onwards human interaction is very important in order to form relationships with people. Including different noises and smells. This exposure will ensure your German Shepherd puppy turns into a confident, friendly individual. Mom will also be doing an important job of teaching her puppies to not bite too hard. Even an 8 week old German Shepherd puppy would have the power in their jaws to break the smaller bones in humans fingers. This is why mom teaching her puppies bite inhibition is so important. For more information on bite inhibition please see our guide on German Shepherd bite inhibition. By 5 weeks old German Shepherd puppies will be eating a lot of solid foods, several times throughout the day. Those sharp little teeth would have done their job and mom will be gradually weaning her pups of the dependency on her milk. When mom does feed her puppies, she will only do so for a short period whilst standing up. They will be eating between five and six small meals a day. Although the pups no longer rely on mom for milk, they still need her help and guidance for the next few weeks. Mom will be teaching her babies important life skills to live alongside humans. In some countries 6 week old puppies are taken away from their mothers and moved into their new home. We would not recommend this as the puppies will miss out on continued bite inhibition training from their siblings and mother. This can result in a puppy who bites too hard which can be challenging to manage as they get older. In the USA your puppy will be due their first combined 5-in-1 vaccine at 6 weeks old. This vaccine helps to immunizes your puppy against hepatitis, parvo, distemper, parainfluenza and coronavirus. Most puppies will also need to be wormed again at 6 weeks old. Their last week together will consist of plenty of socialization and playing. Most breeders will arrange a 7 week health check up with the vet to make sure your bundle of fluff is fit and healthy to go to their new home. In the UK some breeders will arrange for the pups first 8 week vaccination to take place during this check. Although some vets advise against it. By the end of this week German Shepherd puppies are ready to leave their mothers and move into their new homes for good. The week you get to take your new puppy home. This will be a very exciting time, but you may also be feeling a bit nervous. There will be some challenged along the way for new puppy owners and your puppy will take some time to adjust to life without its mother and siblings. In the UK the first combined vaccination will help to immunizes your puppy against distemper, parvovirus, leptospirosis and hepatitis. The first puppy injection in the UK typically will happen between 8 and 10 weeks. Some breeders would have trained the puppies to poop and pee on newspapers or puppy pads. From the moment you get them home it is important to show your German Shepherd puppy where to pee and poop. Puppies naturally like to pee where they have done so before so to avoid building history of peeing in your home is best if you can to avoid it. The more you can avoid accidents from happening as much as possible from the start the faster the puppy training process should be. All puppies are different, and some will get this quicker than others. The main thing to remember is not to discipline your puppy for accidents. The most successful way to potty train is to reward success and ignore accidents. Just clean them up quickly and thoroughly. Your puppy will love nothing more than being praised. For more information please see our guide on How to potty train your German Shepherd puppy. Already your German Shepherd puppy will feel like part of the family. Your German Shepherds unique personality will make you feel very proud. Your puppy will develop new sleeping patterns and feeding routines which you will need to adapt to. Most puppies will sleep between eighteen and twenty hours a day at 9 weeks old. During the day when you are with your puppy generally you will not need to shut them away in a crate to nap. German Shepherd puppies are often more than happy to sleep whilst family life goes on around them. However, there will be times when sleeping in a crate is better and safer for your puppy. You must not leave a 9 week old puppy to sleep outside the crate if you are not home to watch them if they wake. Puppies are into everything and many innocent items found in the house could be a potential hazard to your inquisitive pup. For more information please see our guide on how to puppy proof your home. Even if your puppy can barely keep their eyes open other pups and children will still want to play and your German Shepherd puppy may find it hard to refuse. After a hard day of play the peace and quiet of a crate will enable your pup to have a well-deserved nap. If your German Shepherd puppy does need to go to the toilet in the night make sure you keep it short and to a minimum. Establishing a daily routine is the best way to get your German Shepherd puppy to sleep through the night. Part of this schedule will involve mealtimes. Your 9 week old puppy will need four meals a day. Split these up throughout the day and try to stick to similar times. This is to stop encouraging your puppy to wake up earlier and earlier because they associate waking with food. You should always reward your puppy either vocally, with a favourite toy or treats for good behaviour and ignore bad behaviour. Puppies and dogs want to be praised so they respond very well to positive encouragement. Punishing puppies and dogs may have a short term positive effect on their behaviour but long term you could be setting them up to fail. It is very important to socialise and expose your puppy to other humans, dogs and different scenarios whilst they are young. This maybe hard before your puppy has had all its vaccines however getting many different people to come and visit you at your home will enable them to get used to visitors. Before their full vaccinations you can also, you can take you German Shepherd puppy out and about with you to expose them to the outside world as long as you can carry them. If you live in the USA, your puppy will be due their second combined 5-in-1 vaccine at 9 weeks old. In the USA a minimum of three sets of the combined vaccine are required for your puppy. Although you cannot put your puppy down outside until after their final vaccination. Puppies 10 week injection In the UK is a booster vaccination to help immunizes your puppy against distemper, parvovirus, leptospirosis and hepatitis. Check with your vet what date after their jabs your German Shepherd puppy will be able to go down outside. Your puppy will then need a booster between 6 and 12 months old. If you live in the USA at 12 weeks old your German Shepherd puppy will be due their booster for the combined 5in1 vaccine against hepatitis, distemper, parainfluenza, parvo and coronavirus and a vaccine against rabies and leptospirosis. If you live in a high risk area, they may also need to be given the vaccination to help immunize them against Lyme. If applicable at 16 weeks your German Shepherd puppy may need to have a fourth combined 5in1 vaccine. A minimum of three combined injections are required in the USA. Check with your vet what date they will be able to be out down outside. By 10 weeks old your German Shepherd puppy will be able to control their bladder a lot more. Potentially up to several hours. When taking your German Shepherd puppy out try to introduce them to as many other friendly dogs, humans and noises you can. This will help your German Shepherd puppy to grown into a confident well-rounded dog. At 3 months old your German Shepherd will go down from four daily meals to three. These three portions will be larger than what they are used to which may cause stomach upset. If your German Shepherd puppy does get an upset stomach, try going back to four smaller meals for a couple of days and they try the three larger portions again. This can be a challenging time as your adorable German Shepherd puppy turns into a furry crocodile. Luckily the teething stage is only a phase as with human babies and short lived. In most cases your puppy biting should stop around when they are around 7 months old and have their adult teeth. You maybe noticing your German Shepherds gorgeous ears fluctuating between floppy and pointy. By the time your puppy has finished teething their ears should tick up all the way. This usually happens around months. As they grow their cartilage becomes stronger. Some puppies need another month or so to help them cope without going out for frequent toilet breaks. Even when your German Shepherd puppy is toilet trained occasional accidents are normal. German Shepherds do have large ears but they tend to grow into them as they get older. Although your German Shepherd may look older on the inside, they are still very much a puppy. If you are looking to get your puppy neutered or spayed the recommended age is 6 to 9 months. However, it is common for some female puppies to get spayed at 4 months old. Summary: Your German Shepherd is bound to give you so much joy and happiness throughout its life. You can get either a heavy or obese dog, and it can be a result of overfeeding or certain health issues. How to Check the Weight of Your German Shepherd The simplest method to see whether your dog is underweight is to check whether the ribs are visible on the sides. If you can see that the shape of your dog reminds you of a barrel on the ribs, it means that it is overweight. If you cannot feel the ribs, but there is too much skin on the sides, your dog is overweight. However, if you feel the ribs and only a thin layer of skin, it is underweight. It does not matter whether your dog is underweight or overweight. In any case, it can cause health problems if you do not repair the situation. The best way to succeed is to make changes to the diet. If your German Shepherd is underweight, you should enrich the content of its food. However, do not make it eat if the dog does not want to. That can lead to more severe problems. Make a slow transition to food with higher fat content. Or you may even give your dog puppy food because it is rich in nutrients. If your pet is obviously overweight, the best thing is to cut off the food. However, you also need to do it step by step so that the dog finally can eat just half of the amount you have recently fed it. The adult dog has a height of inches cm at the shoulder and an average weight of pounds kg. Nevertheless, some German Shepherds can grow bigger and even reach pounds kg. I have been dealing with dogs, namely German Shepherds, throughout my life. I have been working part-time as a dog trainer and instructor for about 5 years, dealing mainly with German Shepherds. So I know a bit about these animals. Therefore, I decided to share my knowledge and experience about this fantastic breed. If you need help with advice and care tips or want to know more about German Shepherd dogs, welcome to this blog. They are very loyal, intelligent and love to be kept active, so can be easy to train. They suit very active households as they need a lot of exercise every day. They are great dogs for owners with a lot of experience and time as, like most dogs, they can get bored easily. Unfortunately, German Shepherds do have a range of health issues due to the way they have been bred, which can end up being costly to owners and cause serious problems for the dog. Common health problems in German Shepherds German Shepherds are great dogs for the right owners, but they are at risk of certain conditions and illnesses common with the breed. Making sure the parents of your puppy have had the relevant health screening can reduce the chances of your puppy being affected by some of these upsetting conditions. This means that these types of dog have been bred over many years to look a certain way, but that these changes to the way they look have started to cause them health problems. For German Shepherds, this is mostly due to the shape of their back legs and hips. There is a screening test for this. There is a screening test. Inherited eye diseases — including cataracts and multifocal retinal dysplasia. There are screening testing for these. Epilepsy — a brain disorder causing seizures. Pituitary dwarfism — a hormone deficiency which causes severe growth problems and reduces lifespan. Haemophilia A and B — bleeding disorders that stop blood from clotting and cause wounds to bleed more than they should. Screening tests are available. This list is not exhaustive, and there are many other conditions that German Shepherds have been shown to be prone to. German Shepherds and barking As with any dog, German Shepherds are likely to bark. Their main purpose was for herding and guarding so they can be quite vocal when people walk past or enter or exit the house, but how much noise they make will vary from dog to dog. Training and socialisation Regardless of the age of your German Shepherd when you adopt it, you need to have clear boundaries to help keep them safe and happy. As with all training — consistency is key! Everyone in the family needs to follow the same rules. German Shepherds are very loyal to their owners and can be protective of their family. They can have a strong guarding instinct, so careful training and socialisation will be needed to prevent any guarding or aggressive behaviours. As with any dog, your German Shepherd will need to be well socialised with people, other animals and different objects and environments from a young age. Try to keep the time your German Shepherd is alone to an absolute minimum as they thrive on company and will worry about you if you leave them too long. You should never leave any dog alone for longer than four hours. Exercise Be prepared — German Shepherds are very active dogs! They need plenty of exercise to keep them happy and occupied. This will also stop them from barking out of boredom or having a nibble on the furniture. Your German Shepherd will need a minimum of two hours of exercise every day. This should include walks and off-lead exercise in a safe area, with extra playtime and training on top to give them a good variety. You can find out how much exercise your dog needs , or even find exercises you can do together online. Our vets recommend spreading exercise across the day rather than trying to do two hours all in one go. German Shepherds are a great breed if you enjoy long walks and spending loads of time exploring outside. If there are times when you are unable to give them the exercise they need, then arranging for a relative, friend or dog-walker to come and help would be essential. Grooming Be prepared for a lot of shedding because German Shepherds have such thick coats! Ideally, you should give your German Shepherd a brush or comb down a few times a week to keep their coat looking healthy, prevent matting and reduce the build-up of dead hair especially if they have a longer coat. You may want to take them to a professional for bath time because of their size. Will you give now to help people and pets in need? Make sure you can recognise the signs of unhappiness or anxiety in your dog to help avoid any conflicts. German Shepherds and other pets To help them be calm and patient, it's best to socialise your German Shepherd with other dogs and pets from a young age. Some can be a bit bossy with other dogs as they get older but with proper care, training and socialisation this is unlikely to become a problem. German Shepherds are usually fine with other family pets they have grown up with. Your vet will be able to tell you how much your dog should be eating. You should feed them a good quality, commercially available, complete dog food. We usually recommend splitting their daily allowance into two meals. If you give your dog the occasional treat or use treats for training, remember to take this into account and reduce their daily allowance. You should try to feed your dog at the same time every day to get them into a routine. Remember to leave at a gap after eating and before exercising. Beware unusually cheap puppies as they could come from a puppy farm. These breeders must do extra health tests and meet high standards. Set up costs Puppy vaccines — if you rescue a dog, reputable centres will often vaccinate them for you. Remember that ongoing booster vaccinations will be needed to continue their immunity. Neutering — you should usually arrange for your dog to be neutered at around six months old, though your vet will be able to advise you exactly when is best. Check prices at your local practice as these will depend on your vet and where you live. Some rescue centres will neuter any dogs they rehome, saving you this cost. Equipment — including a collar and tags, lead, harness, dog beds, dog bowls, pet-safe toothpaste and toothbrushes, grooming brushes and toys. Keep in mind that all these will need to be replaced with wear or damage or if your dog outgrows or damages them! Ongoing costs Food. Preventive healthcare — budget for routine vet visits to help stop your dog getting ill and catch any problems early. They need annual check-ups, vaccinations and regular flea and worming treatments. Check if your vet offers a health care plan as this can help spread the cost throughout the year. Accessories — including lots of poo bags, replacing worn toys and grooming accessories, buying doggy toothpaste and any other extras they might need. Other costs Training — basic training is very important and dogs can benefit from formal classes. Some dogs may have, or develop, behavioural problems which might need professional management. Boarding — you may also need to budget for boarding or dog sitting costs if you are planning to go away from home on holiday. If you are having difficulty with veterinary costs, you can check if you are eligible for treatment at PDSA here. Fun facts The first guide dogs for visually impaired people were German Shepherds. They were originally bred to be herding dogs, an instinct which still remains strong in the breed. They need lots of exercise and plenty to do to stop getting bored. Make sure you have enough space and time to give them the exercise and attention they need to stay happy and healthy. Rehoming centres There are plenty of rescue centres across the country where you may find a German Shepherd. Breed-specific rescues that specialise in German Shepherds are also out there. Good rescue centres should let you know of any health and behaviour problems. Breeders If you buy from a breeder, make sure your puppy will be well socialised and have all necessary screening tests, health checks and vaccinations. We recommend looking for a Kennel Club Assured breeder as they meet higher standards.

I sat down with Gracie and her guardian to discuss the problems she wanted to work on. The priority was to teach a puppy to calm down, stop barking, stop biting and some leash training. I stressed that its important for her guardian to correct or reward the puppy within 3 seconds for her to understand what her guardian is saying. Instead of allowing it to play at home and cause a disturbance, try taking it for a walk. Even though your goal is to tire it out, you do not need to walk too briskly or fast with the dog. On the walk, give the dog its time to enjoy it and do what it wants to do. This will ensure that it gets its daily satisfaction before you get back home. You can also try playing a short game with it before or after you leave so that it will be even more tiring. According to 3LostDogs , most of the time, they are hyper because they were deprived of activity in the past. Creating a routine will elevate good behavior. Try something simple first. Walk your dog in the morning after breakfast. In the afternoon, have another family member walk it for about minutes before lunch. In the evening, have another person walk the dog again for a few minutes. The schedule does not have to be perfect, but make sure that you try to keep it as exact as possible. Look at FearFreeHappyHomes to get more information on how you can create an effective daily routine. However, regular toys can quickly become boring to your french bulldog. A puzzle toy will create an opportunity for your french bulldog to use its brainpower and stay distracted for long periods. Try purchasing some toy cubes or treat-dispensing toys so your dog can take its energy out on something productive. Just make sure that the treats are appropriate for the dog's diet and that you do not overpower the toy with kibble. Finding quality toys can be a challenge for some dog owners. You do not want to get any that will break easily or becoming boring after a while. WikiHow recommends that you talk to your vet about any toys containing questionable materials like rawhide. This can be a great way to keep your dog calm and compliant during busy times. It also gives it an idea of how it is expected to behave in specific environments. For example, you can teach your french bulldog that it is okay to be wild and energetic outdoors instead of indoors. Or, you can teach it to be quiet when the television is on or when it notices that you are talking on the phone with someone. MyPetNeedsThat recommends you continuously use the dog's name so that it knows to respond to your commands when you call. The Spruce Pets suggests that sports like dock jumping, agility, and tracking are all good sports for dogs. This can be an excellent way for you to bond with your french bulldog. It is much better to teach your dog through interaction and activity instead of discipline or punishment. Make sure that you discuss individual sports with a professional trainer or veterinarian before you let your dog participate. Take the extra time to make sure that your french bulldog is not too wild so you can prevent injury. If you want it to be excited, you should be excited. Matching your energy to your dog's energy is not mandatory during every training session. If you are frustrated with your dog while trying to teach it to be clam, that will only make the dog more hyper. Being too assertive or aggressive can backfire on you and cause the dog to be afraid or defensive. Make sure that you are keeping your own emotions under control. This will ensure that your emotions are not taking attention away from what you are trying to get your dog to do. Most humans can relate to the fact that pleasant smells inspire them to be calm and relax. It can be anything from the aroma of baking cookies in the kitchen, the fresh scent of cleaning products in a store's cleaning aisle, or the scent of a favorite candle. Talk with a professional or do your research before you experiment with scents. Cookies might make you relax, but it might make your dog hungry. Detergent or burning therapeutic oils might make you sleepy, but it could smell like poison to your dog. Try out different scents or try to find ones that cater to animals the most. Conclusion You could have a french bulldog that is calm and obedient but still has spouts of excessive energy. This might happen if your dog is never being taken out for walks. A lack of attention and exercise can also trigger this kind of behavior. Avoid making your dog bored by staying active. Stick to a routine that is doable for you and your french bulldog. Make sure that any interaction is always followed by affection and love. Dogs are a lot more like human children than most people believe. Keep the love and positivity in your environment, and everything will run smoothly after a while. Check out this YouTube video for more information on how you can keep your french bulldog calm. Gideon Wickersham built himself a home that would amaze and intrigue people hundreds of years after he added the finishing touches. In this home, hidden in the little township of East Marlborough, the unique woodwork and craftsmanship is just a facade for the history that lay inside its walls. Gideon Wickersham, the great-grandson of Thomas Wickersham built the Gideon Wickersham farmstead in .Gideon utilized locally available schist and serpentine to create an exceptionally beautiful visual effect on the outside. It is obvious by the fine woodwork on the interior and the exterior that Gideon was a fine craftsman. In , Thomas Wickersham settled in what is now East Marlborough. In , he came to Southern Chester County from Sussex, England, with his second wife and four children from his first marriage. He claimed acres that he had purchased from Humphrey Killingbeck, a relative from his first marriage. William Penn had granted 1, acres to Killingbeck in .The Wickerskams were Quakers. They brought with them certificates of membership from Horsham, England, and were probably the founders of Old Kennett Meeting. Gideon had begun to purchase land for himself in the area of his ancestor in .Written in that deed, Gideon was referred to as a "turner. It is assumed that Gideon learned his woodworking skills from his uncle. Living until the age of 97, Enoch boarded his later years at Gideon's house. Gideon Jr. The house, with double doors, was a popular style exclusively in southeastern Pennsylvania. This double door idea maximized every inch of living space. One door typically led to a formal parlor, while the other led to a functional work area or kitchen. The double door plan worked well both in urban and rural settings. The original house is measured 30' by 30' and faces south. It is built of rough cut local stone, serpentine and schist. These stones, used in equal proportion produce a very dramatic visual effect. The house went through many changes and many owners before it reached its final restoration. As the couple stripped away wallpaper and paint and pulled off a dilapidated Victorian wraparound porch, they uncovered the house, an architectural jewel. The house was soon added to the National Register of Historic Places. It was the nd property in Chester County to be included on the register since it was began in .The style of the house, as previously mentioned, was exclusive to Southern Chester County. It lasted, however, for only first 25 years in the 19th century. There was an addition built on the house. It involved a bathroom, a kitchen, and a greenhouse, and a bedroom upstairs. The present dining room is the original kitchen. As one can see, something as simple as a house can hold rich history, whether it be about the people living in it or its architecture. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia A female dog in her whelping box. Whelping Box with Extension Wall. Whelping boxes vary from improvised cardboard boxes, durable corrugated plastic to purpose built equipment, typically made of plywood or plastic. Desirable features include ease of cleaning and sanitation, extendibility, and toughness. However, there can sometimes not be enough traction, and with the added factor of an unnaturally flat floor, often puppies can develop, and suffer from what is known as hip dysplasia. Also whelping dens exist, which are whelping boxes that are enclosed on top. Commercially available whelping boxes often feature accommodations for accessories such as heat control devices and IP camera attachment. The sides of the box are designed to be high enough to safely contain the puppies, yet low enough to allow the mother to enter and leave comfortably, with consideration given to her protruding mammary glands. Alternatively, the box is provisioned with a doorway with adjustable height for the same purpose. The bottom of the box may or may not have a floor and may be lined with specially designed "whelping pads," or layers of newspaper or fabric to provide insulation from cold floors and to absorb fluids. Full covers may be used to prevent puppies from escaping. Most boxes will include a low railing termed rails, pig rails, or roll-bars fixed to the inside perimeter of the box. This is to protect puppies from being crushed or smothered by the mother should she roll over during birthing or while asleep. This is considered especially important with larger dog breeds. Here are some ideas for your small dog. Cardboard Box One of the least expensive whelping boxes is simply a cardboard box. Make sure it is big enough that your dog can stretch out in it. The nice thing about a cardboard box is that, once you no longer need the whelping box, you can simply throw it away. To make a whelping box out of cardboard, use these easy instructions: Find a box that your dog can comfortably lie down and stretch out in but not much larger than that. The sides should be at least to inches high. You want the sides to be too high for the puppies to climb over, but not so high your dog can't get over it when she wants a break. Smaller breed dogs will be fine with 12 inches, whereas larger breeds will need 24 inches. Cut a "door" into the side of the box for your dog to move in and out of the box. The width of the doorway should be about twice her body's width, and the edge should be high enough to keep puppies in but not so high she hits her belly on it. You will want to use some sort of covering on the cardboard to keep it from getting wet and to make cleaning it easy. You could line it with duct tape, plastic sheeting, tarps, or plastic drop cloths made for painting. Then cover whatever material you use with newspaper or old towels to make the flooring soft and comfortable. Plastic Storage Bin A plastic storage bin can also be used as a whelping box. You want to use the under-the-bed storage type so that the sides will be short enough for the mother dog to easily get in and out. If you decide to go this route, fold old towels on the bottom to ensure there is no chance that your dog will slip when she is moving around. Be aware that depending on the size of your pups, they may be able to get over the sides of the bin as they get bigger. In that case, you can extend the sides of the bin with cardboard. Ideas that will work for bigger dogs, such as Labrador Retrievers and Rottweiler dogs , include: Appliance Boxes If you have a mid-sized breed, you may still be able to find a cardboard box. Check with appliance stores and home improvement stores that carry items that would require bigger boxes. If you can't find one, you still have some inexpensive alternatives. The downside to using these boxes is once the puppies get large enough, they will be able to get over the sides, which they wouldn't with a traditional whelping box with sides at least inches high. Kiddie Pool A hard-sided plastic kiddie pool usually costs less than twenty dollars, and you can get them in several sizes. They are also easy to clean. These pools will last for several litters of puppies. However, just as with appliance boxes, the problem with the kiddie pool is that the sides may not be high enough to keep the puppies in as they get bigger. There are newer types of kiddie pools made just for dogs that have higher sides. Another option for larger dog breeds is to use a water trough , which has higher sides. They're much more expensive but very sturdy and can be reused for whelping, as well as an outdoor pool or bathing area for your dogs. To make a whelping box out of a kiddie pool, find a pool size where your dog can lay out comfortably with some extra room for the puppies. You can line it with a round whelping pad, old towels, newspaper, or even covers made specifically for kiddie pools used for whelping. An excellent safety precaution is adding a PVC pipe frame that serves as puppy rails to keep the mom from rolling over and crushing a newborn pup against the sides. Just be sure the puppies can't get stuck under or between the pipes. To keep puppies from getting out of the pool when they get larger, you can run x-pens or playpen panels around the outside of the pool. Make sure you leave a doorway for the mom to come and go! Breed Characteristics and Care Several dog breeds are notorious for the wrinkles in their skin, and these breeds come in many shapes and sizes. Some are very active while others are happier to lounge around the house. And some tend to be friendlier than others, especially around strangers. While wrinkled skin can give a dog some added charm and character, it also requires special maintenance. The wrinkles also must be kept dry in order to prevent further growth of microorganisms. Many wrinkly dogs are born with a condition called brachycephalic syndrome. They have a shortened muzzle and head, which may cause several significant health concerns that may require management, surgery, or other special care. Brachycephalic syndrome includes anatomical defects which can occlude the airway: elongated soft palate, stenotic nares, narrowed trachea, and everted laryngeal saccules. These can contribute to snoring and difficulty breathing, as well as making dogs prone to heat stroke. Ready to see come cuties? Check out 12 of the most adorable wrinkly dog breeds. Farmers used shar-peis as hunters, herders, and guard dogs because of their intelligence and brute strength. Their notable wrinkled skin and regal appearance help them stand out among other breeds. Puppies tend to have more loose skin that tightens as they mature. However, some shar-pei puppies require surgery to tack excess skin away from their eyes. Shar-peis are also prone to entropion rolling in of the eyelids and various skin issues. While cute, these dogs require an experienced and confident owner, as they are a challenging breed to own, due to their tendency to be dominant, protective, aloof, and sometimes aggressive with other dogs. While intruders are right to be afraid of the protective Neapolitan mastiff with that giant head and massive frame, these dogs tend to be loyal to their families. The voluminous folds around their head and loose skin over their body just add to the breed's charm. And their long jowls tend to drip a fair amount of drool. Pug Wrinkles Overview A Pug's wrinkles are one of the amazing standout features of this incredible breed. Opposite to some breeds that were developed to have skin folds to help fend off possible wild animal attacks, this is not so with the Pug. This breed was spoiled and cherished as an indoor companion and it is believed that Pugs have wrinkles simply for aesthetic purposes, i. This article will cover: Anatomy of a Pug's Wrinkles - A look at where wrinkles are located and the thumbprint that may appear on them. Pug Wrinkle Care - The importance of keeping your Pug's wrinkles clean and dry with step-by-step instructions. Wrinkle infections - This is a common issue seen with Pugs; causes, symptoms, and treatment options. Anatomy of a Pug's Wrinkles A Pug's wrinkles are found primarily on the forehead and around the muzzle. The pattern of the wrinkles are unique to each dog and vary in exact location, length, and depth. Both black and non-black Pugs have wrinkles, though these may be more noticeable on fawns and, of course, the thumbprint is only applicable to fawns. When there is a black smudge of fur in the middle of the forehead wrinkles, this is known as a thumbprint or thumb mark and is a very desired physical traits in conformation show rings. Wrinkles on Pug Puppies vs Adults All Pugs have some level of wrinkles but this is something that develops and becomes more pronounced as a Pug matures. Most newborn Pugs do not have wrinkles; the forehead is smooth. At the 8-week mark, wrinkles may be in any state of development that ranges from not there at all to very noticeable. By the time a Pug is at the 9 to month mark, wrinkles are in place. Though the appearance of wrinkles on a young puppy is a great indication of the amount that will be present as an adult, this is not so with a lack of wrinkles. A week-old Pug with a rather smooth forehead can mature into an month old with lots of deep folds. Because wrinkles are a genetic feature, seeing the extent of wrinkles on both sire and dam can give you a good idea about how many wrinkles a Pug will have; however, genetic traits like this can jump generations. Let's look at some photo examples of Pugs at various ages and various development of facial wrinkles: This is Otis at 3 months old. Though the fur on the forehead is loose, wrinkles have not yet developed, but this will change. As you can see, he has some pronounced wrinkles on his forehead, around his eyes, and on the muzzle. There are lots of wrinkles all over the forehead and one over the top of the muzzle. The AKC breed standard states 'the wrinkles are large and deep' and the FCI states 'The wrinkles are clearly defined without exaggeration'. This said, pet Pug dogs can have wrinkles ranging from slight to heavy. Let's take a look at three different levels of wrinkles on adult Pugs: Slight wrinkles This is Boomer, at 6 years old. Though this cutie has wrinkles, they are slight when compared to some other Pugs. He has lots of large and deep wrinkles over the forehead and face. Tiny bits of food, other fine debris, and moisture often due to splashes when a Pug drinks water easily get trapped in the wrinkles. If the wrinkles are not regularly cleaned, they can start to smell funky, become irritated red inflamed areas and usually lots of itching and can develop skin infections. Simply cleaning the wrinkles during baths is not enough. At an absolute minimum, a Pug's wrinkles should be cleaned 3 times per week and ideally you will want to do this every day, up to 3 times per day after each meal. It only takes a few moments and plays a huge role in keeping the wrinkles free of odor, itching, and infections. How to Clean a Pug's Wrinkles Don't wait until you see foreign matter; get into a schedule of cleaning the wrinkles. Many owners find that doing this after each meal is a good way to remember this important grooming task. Options include a grooming wipe like Earthbath Facial Wipes for Dogs. These are gentle hypoallergenic pre-moistened cloths that are great for the wrinkle's sensitive skin with both aloe vera and vitamin E. And, another good choice is Petpost Wrinkle Wipes for Dogs which are specifically made for breeds with deep wrinkles. These are great at cleaning skin folds and have coconut oil and aloe vera to keep the wrinkles in good shape. If you choose to just use a thin washcloth, be sure to only make the cloth damp not soaked and add just a few drops of a quality canine shampoo to ensure that the pH level is correct and there are no harsh soaping agents or additives being introduced to the wrinkles. When you clean the wrinkles, this is always a good time to first make a visual inspection to look for any irritation and take note of any odd odors. If issues like this remain for more than a day or so, a topical medicated product may need to be used. This is covered next under ' Pug Wrinkle Infections '. Take your time and gently swipe down into each fold. It is important to wipe down as far as you can since bacteria, debris, and excess moisture are often found at the bottom the wrinkles. Try to make one sweeping motion. Repeat until the wipe comes out clean without any matter on it. Use new wipes as needed. If your Pug is prone to chronic wrinkle irritation or infections, it can help to use a balm or cream that creates a water-repellent barrier to keep moisture and debris from coming into contact with the skin. Essentially, this type of product is like Chapstick for the wrinkles. While you'll still want to routinely clean them, using a product like Squishface Wrinkle Paste can shield the wrinkles and help clear up irritation. Note that this is not for bacterial or yeast infections which is covered next. Wrinkle Infections Overview: Even with proper care, wrinkles can become infected. This is a common problem with Pugs since the deep skin folds are dark and moist which is the ideal environment for yeast and bacteria to grow. Some Pugs are more prone to issues than other and if a Pug has lots of wrinkles, it can be easy to mistakenly overlook one or two when cleaning them. Types of wrinkle infections: In most cases, this will be a skin yeast infection. Under certain conditions, this yeast can over-multiply. Certain health issues can trigger yeast to grow in numbers including allergies which trigger the body's immune system response. Bacterial infections can also occur, yet are seen less frequently. Signs and symptoms of wrinkle infections: Odor - This is a top sign. There may be an odd musty-type smell. Itching - A Pug may paw at his face or rub his face into surfaces like carpeting or pillows. Discharge - Though not always present, untreated infections can produce a discharge that is often clear or white. Treatment, at home: Many cases of acute wrinkle infections can be successfully treated at home using an anti-fungal and antibacterial medicated wipe. The combination of chlorhexidine gluconate and ketoconazole are typically very effective for this. The affected areas should be wiped 2 to 3 times per day for 1 week and then once per day for the second week. Discard each wipe afterward; do not re-use these. Treatment, veterinary: For stubborn infections that do not respond to at-home treatment or in the case of chronic reoccurring infections, veterinary treatment will consist of a visual inspection and a sample taken via a swab that is examined under a microscope to determine the exact cause. Once the infection clears up, there will need to be a strong focus on maintaining a strict schedule of cleaning. Do you have your book? With an abundance of folds and creases, these wrinkly dog breeds are becoming increasingly popular among dog owners. But whilst most dog owners enjoy keeping their dog clean and well-groomed, it is important to note that these wrinkly dog breeds require specialized skin maintenance when compared with other breeds. The reason is quite simple — because of their loose skin, there are areas of their wrinkly bodies that can attract dirt, dust and other particles. If left unattended, these can cause infection and irritation. Although its precise origins are unknown, it is believed that the Bloodhound originated in France or Belgium. The breed first made its way to England in the s, and was introduced in the United States towards the end of the nineteenth century. The Bloodhound was recognized by the American Kennel Club in .These days, the Bloodhound is commonly used by law enforcement and SAR teams for trailing suspects or missing individuals. They can also make great — if challenging — family pets. It has a large, spherical face, with a short muzzle that gives the face a very flat appearance. The first known reference to the Bulldog was in the midth century. The English Bulldog was commonly used in bull-baiting and other cruel sports in England. However, breed enthusiasts worked towards the end of the s to prevent the English Bulldog from extinction. The modern English Bulldog is friendly and patient, as breeders have focused on removing some of its earlier aggression. Unfortunately, they are prone to health issues and respiratory problems, owing to their short noses. On average, English Bulldogs only live to be eight to ten years old. Despite being a toy breed, Pugs are deceptively strong for their size. Originally bred as a companion dog for Chinese royalty, the first Pugs lived a life of luxury. They were highly valued and respected. The breed was imported to Europe in the s, and was one of the first breeds to be recognized by the AKC after its formation in .Pugs have a calm disposition, are affectionate, and are considered easy-to-train. They do not demand a lot of exercise or attention, making them an ideal, low maintenance pet for many households. Their suitability for this type of work — a perfect mixture of speed, size and strength — meant they were commonly utilized by gamekeepers to protect against illegal poaching. The AKC recognized the Bullmastiff in .The Bullmastiff is a particularly large dog , standing at almost 70 cm, and weighing as much as lbs. Due to their size, it is vital for Bullmastiffs to be trained and socialized at an early age to ensure they can be controlled. The Frenchie was second in AKC registrations in , and in our analysis of most popular dog breeds in the world , the Frenchie ranked in seventh place. The origins of the French Bulldog are closely linked to the English Bulldog. When bull-baiting was banned in England in , many displaced workers from the Industrial Revolution ended up in France — with their Bulldogs. The smaller versions of the Bulldog were favored by the French, and resulted in increased demand. Frenchies have advanced a long way from their bull-baiting ancestors. They make great companion dogs, and are friendly with family and strangers alike. French Bulldogs require minimal exercise and are excellent indoor pets. They were used by French hunters for their scent ability, and also because handlers were able to keep up with them due to their slower hunting speed. The Basset Hound has a relaxed temperament, and is typically friendly with humans and other dogs. Like the Bloodhound, the Basset Hound has a reputation for drooling. They are well-suited as companion dogs, but can also be used as watchdogs. It is believed that the Chow Chow originated in Asia , potentially up to eight thousand years ago. The AKC registers approximately 10, Chows per year. The Chow Chow is a strong, muscular dog, which frequently looks like it is scowling — and its firm temperament does little to dispel this initial impression. It is a devoted, loyal breed which can weigh up to lbs. At one time, the breed was classified in three varieties Bordeaux, Toulouse and Parisian based on the job the dog was bred to perform. The breed was first recorded in France in and slowly increased in popularity in other parts of the world. In the movie, Hanks, playing a police detective, was assisted by a stubborn but lovable Dogue de Bordeaux. A toy breed, the Pekingese can weigh up to 14 lbs. They are extremely loyal to their owners — a legacy of their relationship with the ruling classes of China. A double-coated breed, the Pekingese requires extensive grooming. Their abundance of fur makes it difficult for them to regulate their body temperature, so extreme care should be taken when taking a Pekingese out in warmer conditions. In modern times, the Pekingese makes a great companion pet. Whilst it closely resembles some Mastiffs, it is actually more closely related to Spitz breeds such as the Chow Chow. Whilst the Shar Pei has undergone periods of popularity, it almost faced extinction in the s due to political turmoil in China throughout the twentieth century. In fact, in the late s, the Shar Pei was mentioned in the Guinness Book of Records as the rarest dog breed in the world. This led to initiatives throughout the world to save the Shar Pei, which resulted in a significant increase in demand. The Shar Pei is suspicious of strangers and other dogs, but loyal to their family. If kept as a pet, they need regular socialization and frequent training to reduce the likelihood of behavioral problems.

black boxer puppies for sale in pa - Agility classes are another fantastic entertainment opportunity for your toy poodle. This breed is a miniature athlete, excelling in agility courses. However, the costs of caring for your pup may be more or less based on the area you live in and the things your dog needs in any given month. For example, you might not need to buy cleaning supplies or get your dog groomed every month, but the above estimates should give you a good idea of what you could be spending. Costs such as dog walking, obedience classes, pet sitters, and boarding facilities can add up fast. If you choose not to invest in pet insurance, you should create an emergency fund for unforeseeable incidences. You can cut down on some of the high costs by shopping for the best store to buy your food and supplies. You can even take grooming lessons or watch YouTube videos for tips on how to groom your toy poodle yourself to save on high grooming costs. Use couponing apps for your phone or internet browser to find the best deals on pet supplies. Honey is a great Chrome extension that finds all the best coupon codes for nearly any website. Rakuten is another extension you can use to earn cash back on your purchases. Other sources of entertainment for your dog may include activities, such as agility. You can also purchase items to create brain games for your dog, like puzzles and Kong toys. Different diets, toys, supplies, and groomers all can vary significantly in cost. Additional Costs to Factor In Other costs you should be prepared for include pet sitters, trainers, and emergency expenses. Trainers usually charge by the session, but some offer packages to help limit expense. Setting money aside every month for any emergency or unexpected expenses will help you be prepared if anything comes up. You can also rotate through toys and supplies to keep things interesting and prevent items from wearing out quickly. Even on a budget, you should plan for the monthly expenses associated with food and medical care. These are expenses that cannot be skipped, regardless of budget. Coming up with creative ways to budget and stretch the use of items longer can go a long way in helping you to save money. Image Credit: susanne, Pixabay Saving Money on Poodle Care You can save money on a professional groomer if you take time to brush your dog well every day to ensure they are not getting mats and to monitor their skin health. You can also save money on grooming expenses if you are comfortable shaving or grooming your Poodle yourself. Another great way to save money on the care and maintenance of your Poodle is to watch online and brick-and-mortar shops for sales and coupons. These can be used to save a significant amount on foods, toys, treats, cleaning supplies, grooming supplies, and more. Conclusion: Poodle Price Owning a Poodle can be attainable, regardless of your budget. Poodles of all sizes and types are fantastic dogs with fun personalities. They are not low-maintenance dogs, though. This means you may experience higher costs associated with grooming and basic care than you would with a lower-maintenance dog. Set aside money every month as a backup option in case unexpected expenses arise or you find yourself in an emergency situation. Giving your dog time and attention, making sure they have plenty of toys and opportunities to run around and play outside, and working on training regularly are all things that you can do to keep your dog entertained each day. It is a good idea to plan ahead and consider starting a savings account, where you can put away a portion of your paycheck so you can pay for unexpected vet costs. Your dog might end up damaging something in your household as they learn obedience training, so you may incur extra costs unexpectedly for this reason. These are just more reasons to consider maintaining a savings account for your dog. Owning a Toy Poodle on a Budget If you can find a Toy Poodle for free or at a rescue center, utilize state-funded service programs like those for spaying and neutering , and if you opt for less expensive commercial food, you can take care of a Toy Poodle on a budget. However, costs should never be cut when it comes to checkups, vaccinations, illness treatment, and items for nutrition and comfort. Learn how to potty and obedience train your dog yourself instead of hiring a professional trainer. You can find training books at the library and training videos online for guidance. Instead of utilizing a grooming service, buy clippers and a good brush, and do the grooming yourself. Instead of buying expensive toys, make them out of old clothes and unbreakable objects that you find around the house. Go on long walks rather than gas-guzzling drives. Spend time at the dog park instead of using electricity at home watching television. Make your own doggy treats utilizing food in your kitchen instead of buying commercial ones. Daily exercise, a proper diet, and plenty of attention will go a long way. Regular checkups can help catch problems before they become too expensive to address. Conclusion Toy Poodles are adorable little dogs that deserve plenty of love and attention throughout their lives.
