In order for that to happen, the showy golden retriever affectionately known as "Truman" will first have to beat out 36 other world-class golden retrievers earlier that day for "Best of Breed" honors. She is the first to admit, however, that the road to success has taken a lot of twists and turns along the way.Originally from Duluth, Siegle said she never had a dog the entire time she was growing up. She eventually got a Yorkshire terrier as well, and that's when she first started showing. Siegle later added a malamute and a Samoyed to her growing pack of dogs. And then, one day her father decided to go on vacation in Hawaii and needed somebody to babysit his dog - a golden retriever. And so the groundwork was already laid when, a year and a half later, a golden came into her own life that she simply couldn't resist. The mother was chained to the dog house. I just had to rescue one of them. I wanted to take them all, but I knew I couldn't. I think she picked me. I named her Brande. Goldens are wonderful at it, and they're very easy to train - all they want to do is please you. She did a very nice job and worked very well. We even tried soaking one in bacon grease! She'd go over and sniff it, turn around, and then come back and sit in front of me. My theory is, if a dog doesn't like something, there's a reason. I don't understand sometimes, but they have a reason, so I decided she was just going to be our pet. She went on the paper route with my daughter, and she was very, very protective of her. She began looking around and eventually got a female golden she named Cinnamon. She had a baby face and she wasn't real big. I had a lot of fun with him. I 'finished' him [completed his championship] in Canada very quickly and took Best in Show up there. When we were in the show ring, he'd look at me and give me this little sparkle because he just loved to go. Sometimes I'd have to tell him to cool it. He'd start out with just a nice little trot, but when we got around the first corner, it was, 'Hold on because here we go! Look at me! He had such perfect structure, also. At that time, I didn't know quite what I had. Three years ago a breeder friend of hers said one of her golden retriever females had given birth to a litter of pups and she had a nice male she wanted to find a home for. She first laid eyes on the exceptional pup when her friend brought him to the national dog show in Cleveland for Siegle to take a look at. Unfortunately, the dog Siegle was showing at the time became very ill, and she was reluctant to get too close to the young pup for fear her dog might have something contagious that could be passed on to him. At the conclusion of the show weekend, her friend asked if she was interested in buying him, and since Siegle liked what she saw of him, she decided to do just that. When she started showing him, all the judges remarked at what a beautiful dog he was. He would just snuggle in with the judge while he makes this weird noise. I just want to snuggle with you. Wherever I was, he was, and wherever I went, he went. It was then she encountered a fellow dog owner she had first met when Truman was six months old who was smitten with him and wanted to buy him at the time. Paul a year ago. He remembered me, though I didn't think he would. From then, we didn't figure it mattered if I was around because he had figured out when it was time to work and when it was time to play. Now when he sees me, he knows exactly who I am. He jumps up and gives me a big hug, snuggles in, and 'talks' to me. Then, when it's time to go to work, he just goes. Truman came home to Siegle's kennel outside of Kettle River for two weeks during the summer - and became a farm dog once again. He needs time to be a dog, too! I took pictures of him when he was all muddy and sent them to his groomer, and she just gasped! Kristi [Falkenthal, Truman's handler] had been getting fairly well known because of Truman, so what she did for me, Truman was doing for her. She got out of Truman what I couldn't. She wanted to keep him until the National and I was going to take him home from there. He ended up giving out 11, and Truman was one of them. By then, Truman was ranked the No. As it turned out, he finished the year really well, and we got the invitation! Siegle will probably fly out East at the end of this week to attend the Extravaganza and help get Truman ready for his appearance in the golden retriever group competition next Tuesday morning at Westminster. Once there, he'll have to make it through the breed competition and beat all the other golden retrievers for Best of Breed honors in order to move on to that night's sporting group competition - and the right to move on to the prestigious Best in Show competition at the end of the evening. And since only the group and Best of Show levels of the competition are televised, most of the folks at home won't know if Truman has "made the cut" until the Best of Breed dogs enter the ring for the Sporting Dog group. Since Siegle won't actually be showing Truman herself, all she can do during the competition is watch - which can be even harder than taking part. I'm constantly watching the judge to see how long she watches the dog, what she looks at when Truman goes around and what she touches on him when she's examining him. He goes on the treadmill, and he gets to go out and run every day. Her kennel is 30 x 50, and has a bedroom so she can sleep near the whelping area when one of her dogs is expecting puppies, as well as a 'living room' for potential buyers to interact with the puppies, an open kennel room for the dogs to exercise, and a bathing room. The kennel area also has a quilting room so Siegle can pursue her other love - quilting. Siegle currently has 12 dogs, including eight goldens. She shows all the goldens, usually traveling with three at a time. Truman has sired some puppies so far, and they have gone to owners all over the country. Siegle has two of his pups herself, one of whom, Regan, just went in the show ring for the first time in January and took her class in the six-to-nine-month class.

Rescue is taking in a dog in need, no matter what age, sex, color, cuteness, etc. .AABR does that. What that means is that if most of the adoption applications we get, are for females, under two years old, flashy fawn, and good with kids, dogs, cats, etc. .And what do we do with all the white and brindle dogs? Or the males and females that don't meet your wish list? Granted we try do are best to match the "good with kids, dogs, cats, etc. .And consider the following. What would happen to your own dogs, if for some reason you needed rescue to take your dog, or worse, your dog became a stray and ended up in rescue. Would people overlook your dog because of their age or color? Or maybe you have not successfully trained your current dog to be "good with kids, dogs, cats, etc. .What would become of them? So we ask you to take a second look at the 60 to 70 dogs on AABR's available dog page. Maybe they are a bit older then you may think you want, or the wrong color, or have a bad picture that doesn't show their true beauty, but they are all beautiful. Available Dogs If you recently brought home a new dog of any age, or have an existing pack.OR are thinking about adopting one soon.Read each bio very carefully, as not every rescue Boxer is suited for every home. And yes, please realize that the Boxer you may have your heart set on, may be adopted before you're approved. Should your first choices all ready have found their forever home, let us suggest a few that we feel will match your home. That is what we are good at. And be happy for the ones that have been adopted. We hope you feel that the right Boxer is worth waiting for. Needs Foster Home. Location: Alberta, Canada. Activity level: High energy. Due to the many health issues that this breed is susceptible to someone with prior French Bulldog or brachycephalic breed experience will only be considered. Health insurance is a must. Housebroken: Yes, but may have a couple accidents getting into his routine. Good with Dogs: Boris is amazing with dogs on walks and outside his home. He is not good with dogs in his home as he becomes protective and territorial. Therefore Boris must be the only pet in his forever home. His past owner also noted that he can be unpredictable with dogs in his home. Good with Cats: No. Good with Children: Boris needs an adult-only home. Any noted prey drive: Yes. How do they respond to the outdoors: Loves walks, hiking, swimming and is curious about the world. Boris is the ultimate outdoorsy dog. Crate Trained: Yes. Is very talkative in the crate though and makes lots of the funny Frenchie grunts and noises while inside. Any resource guarding: Yes. He should be fed in his crate. Resource guards with other dogs. Are they vocal: Not a big barker, but grumbles and grunts a lot. He may possibly become more vocal over time. Leash Etiquette: Boris is a fantastic walker on and off leash. His recall is fantastic. He likes to stop and sniff on walks. Transportation: Boris loves being in the car. He is game for car adventures! Introducing loveable Boris! Boris loves to snuggle and is such an affectionate boy. He loves belly rubs and making snorty noises. Boris is more of a morning guy and when the sun comes up, he is ready to play and start his day. Boris loves adventure… if that adventure includes his family. Where you are going, he is happy to go along with. He is an amazing companion for hiking, walking and swimming. Boris gets along with other dogs outside his home. He has zero leash reactivity and loves to meet up with dogs on his walks and adores playing with them too. He is a bit of an intense player so caution with small dogs as he puts his whole body into play and might knock a small pup down. He does get into other dogs faces to sniff sometimes. In the house Boris can become territorial and may lunge so Boris must be the only pet in his home. Boris has begun to show stranger danger in his foster home and will need to be in an adult-only home with prior dog experience and who have dealt with territorial guarding. His adopters must be prepared to properly manage his responses to strangers entering his home and be comfortable working on this with him. A home with very few visitors would be ideal as well as adopters that are prepared to take the correct steps when someone does come over. Boris would not do well living in the city. His ideal forever home would be a farm or large rural and private property. Boris is a brachycephalic dog, so that means he will be a snorty, snoring dog. So you might need earplugs! Experience with brachycephalic dogs is required as he will need to be watched in the hot months for overheating and he will need a home with air conditioning to keep cool. He has the best personality. When he gets excited he will flip in the air and summersault. He suckles his baby dragon to sleep and makes the wildest noises and grunts. If hilarious Boris is a good match for you, please fill out an application at: covetedcanines. Showing 1 - 40 of resultsPage 1 - results Sort by Your listing deserves to be on top. Rest assured when purchasing a dog from us that years of breeding and training experience have gone into the development and selection of your German shepherd dog or puppy. Black, Dark Sables, as well as Red and Black German shepherd male and female puppies are available by reservation. Martin Z. Riverside is over an hour drive from me in the valley, but; the puppies that come from the breeder are worth the drive and more! My all black German Shepard "Sirius" is an absolute dream! The breeder and his family truly care for the dogs and their upbringing. Arsalaan constantly checks in to see how me and Sirius are doing and is there to answer any questions you may have. Whether it's your first dog or not give him a call! He'll walk you through the steps and be there with you for guidance. Gavin U. Arsalaan and his family are very kind, caring breeders! When I first reached out to him, he was very quick with a response and easy to communicate with. He truly takes great pride in his pups and is very helpful to answer any questions that may arise. I brought Bear home with me on Dec 16 and he was nice, clean, and healthy upon pick up. Arsalaan provided Bear's list of shots as well as his pedigree and some other additional documents. You will not be disappointed working with him, highly recommend him and his family to help you bring home your newest family member! Mitchell K. Very responsible breeder, I came from Arizona and couldn't be happier. Very helpful before and after receiving my puppy. I highly recommended. Jimmy M. I call Arsalaan whenever I have questions and he is always very helpful with training tips and advice. I get a lot compliments on her looks. Elvia B. I am so grateful for all of the help I got from Arsalaan, and we also appreciate him following up on our puppy "Rexie". He's given us great advice even before we decided to get Rexie. Although he's up north about a 90 minute drive from us, it was definitely worth it. He kept our puppy even after her 8 weeks we couldn't bring her home because it was a Christmas gift. When I took Rexie to her first vet visit the vet said " this breeder definitely knows what he's doing ". Rexie came with up to date vaccinations and AKC forms paid for just have to finish writing them up. Our new family member is a happy and healthy puppy! Plus she sleeps through the night quietly from day one. Amazing Thank you Arsalaan. Contact Us for Details on Our Puppies! A working line GSD is generally a healthier dog than its show counterpart and there are distinct differences. Working line German Shepherd breeders choose their sires and bitches carefully in order to produce the strongest pups with the best genetic lines. This breed excels at K9 training and they are well acclimated to following commands, provided the owner has a firm hand and understands how to best work with the breed. The working line breed was standardized with the intent of producing dogs that could protect livestock from predators. The breed became more popular around the turn of the 20th century and was introduced in the United States in .Working line German Shepherd breeders developed and improved breeding techniques and the working line dogs became instrumental in military initiatives for both the Allied and Axis forces during World War II. After World War II, German and American working line German Shepherd breeders continued to further the breeding process and these amazing dogs have become synonymous with military and law enforcement work over the last century. There are a few differences between the working line German Shepherd and the show line in disposition and appearance. The working line dog is bred to be stronger, healthier, and more able to work for long hours. These dogs also enjoy working. They are high energy, which is necessary for the type of work that they do. In appearance, working line dogs have a thicker coat. They are sturdier and thicker than show line dogs and their back legs are longer, giving them a straight structure. Show line dogs have shorter back legs, giving them a slanted back and a sleeker appearance. These dogs are bred to be agile and obedient. Excellent for protection, the Czech line is strictly bred and is noted for its dark coat. West German. The West German line is noted for its coloring and pleasing looks. They are also known to be calm in temperament. They do have a strong drive and great work ability. DDR German Shepherds are known for their athleticism. These dogs are more muscular and larger. They are very responsive and intelligent. But they need a firm hand from their owner and trainer. Depending on the line, most GSD can be described as aloof. They are intelligent and highly motivated. These dogs were bred for work, so they need to be exercised and worked regularly to maintain optimal health. These dogs are specifically bred to work and to carry specific traits and temperaments. Upcoming Litters What customers say about our puppies "Dedicated to a fault is only one way I would describe her, there are so many positives.Dedication, patience, and caring are truly not strong enough words. Audrey and I discussed her breeding line and I was most impressed! She took the time to explain her dog's lines, what some of them had gone on to do : police, detection, protections, pets - it was impressive. I was beyond happy that Audrey not only had the experience, but also had the educational degrees to back up what she was saying. I did not meet Audrey when this litter was born but instead there were a few male puppies available black and sable but none had been actually chosen yet. Audrey put me down for a sable male per my request. I knew I would not see whatever puppy was to be mine except through videos, pictures, etc….She would send videos, pictures, and just general updates. Audrey was always available and responded quickly to any correspondence. I sometimes wondered when she slept with all these clients and pups. Dedicated to a fault is only one way I would describe her, there are so many positives. One day Audrey sent a particular video and I fell in love. It is the fairest way to allow clients to choose. Audrey and I continued to correspond sometimes daily and she was amazing. A day or so later, Audrey let me know that this little guy was mine. I believe that Audrey does everything within her power to ensure that clients do receive the puppy they want if the fit is correct. Now, we had to transport this little man. Audrey and I communicated a lot! I had never had a puppy brought to my door physically unseen. This was completely new to me yet, I know dogs are flown all over the world. Together, Audrey and I navigated this last leg of the journey and I could not have asked for more from her. Dedication, patience, and caring are truly not strong enough words to use when describing how Audrey was during this process. Audrey ended up keeping my pup who was named Malachi for an extra week. While he was there, she taught him his name and sent pictures and videos often. They certainly made my day! Since Malachi has arrived home, he is nothing short of amazing! He is exactly as Audrey described him and the litter Daisy x Maverick focused, well behaved, eager to learn, and dark stunning sable! Exactly what a great breeder should do. My experience with North Mountain Kennels was wonderful. If you are looking for a well bred high quality working German Shepherd l highly recommend North Mountain Kennels. Audrey is in a class all of her own and I am grateful that the stars aligned so that I was able to be blessed with one of her pups. He is a true gift and I look forward to all the days ahead with him. Thank you Audrey! Currently Available Puppies. Renal disorders Skin problems. This will screen for potential diseases and gives you a better chance to prepare for it. Husky Crossed With Poodle Food Requirements Owners should take into consideration the size of their dog when it comes to feeding. Large dogs like a Husky crossed with Poodle need either an all-natural diet or high-quality dog food developed specifically for big breeds these are the best large breed dry dog food brands in our opinion. The best dry dog food will always meet those requirements, while the worst dry dog food will have numerous additives among its ingredients. Make sure to feed your delicate cub with the best puppy food brands to ensure they grow into strong adults. If they are picky, the best dry dog food for small dogs will be a suitable alternative. The Husky Poodle mixed breed typically has a thick coat, so including a salmon oil supplement in its diet will assist in keeping its fur sleek, shiny, and soft. You could also go for the Nutra Thrive dog food supplement. Owners should make sure to add glucosamine supplements as their dog grows older to protect their joints, and also transition into the age-appropriate diet by switching to the best senior dry dog food in due time. Carbs are also needed but make sure you keep your dog away from high glycemic foods and grains that can trigger allergies. Because of its high energy levels, the Huskypoo has a tendency to eat a lot. Husky Poodle mix puppies four to weeks old should be fed four meals daily. This can be reduced to two feedings a day when they reach their sixth month until they turn a year old. By this time, one meal a day is enough. However, this dog is susceptible to bloating so owners should consider dividing this meal into two smaller servings per day. Dog owners are fortunate that they have more premiere dog food to choose from now. It also has a high protein count thanks to ingredients like chicken meal, turkey meal, and whitefish meal. Wells has also incorporated natural chicken fat, carrots, spinach, and peas for additional vitamins and minerals. It boasts of having meat as its first three ingredients. It also incorporates enough vitamins, minerals, chondroitin, and glucosamine to keep dogs of any age healthy. This brand only uses one type of meat, making it ideal for dogs with allergies and sensitive stomachs. Poodle Crossed With Husky Exercise Requirement As the offspring of two working dogs, you should not be surprised that your Husky Poodle mix will have enormous energy reserves. After all, the Poodle has been bred to hunt while the Siberian Husky is a powerful sled dog. A Poodle crossed with Husky will require daily exercise. You should take your dog out for a run every day or walk it anywhere from an hour to one hour and a half twice a day. A trip to the dog park, swimming at the beach or even a hike will benefit your hybrid pet. Most of the time this outlet comes out in the form of destructive behavior, like chewing, digging, or barking. The Poodle Husky crossbreed also needs mental stimulation as well. This is one smart dog, and if left with nothing to do, it will find another way to amuse itself, like chewing your shoes or ripping up cushions. You should invest in puzzles and interactive toys to keep your pet engaged and happy. The market for dog toys is surprisingly robust, and these are some of the best ones out right now: Nina Ottosson Dog Tornado Treat Puzzle Toy: Dubbed a tornado because of its spinning tower, this toy will tease your dog and entice it to solve the puzzle so it can snatch the treats. This is an engaging toy that will challenge even the smartest dogs and keep them occupied for hours. Your Husky Poodle will spend hours knocking this toy around as it chews and swats it about. The squeaking rubber ball also catches the attention of canines who like auditory stimulation. GoughNuts chews have been designed to withstand even the heaviest and most determined of chewers. Because of this, most people would assume that training this mix will be easy. And it is, in a way. However, the Huskypoo can also develop the stubborn streak that Siberian Huskies are known for. This attitude can make training challenging, as your dog will test your patience and skill repeatedly in a bid for dominance. It also means that Huskypoo owners should be patient. Someone with experience training or managing large and strong-willed pets is a nice fit for this dog. Some experts say eight weeks old is a good age to commence training. These classes will teach these young dogs how to listen and follow their owner, learn manners, and socialize with other pets. Getting your puppy used to a strict routine as it grows up can prevent behavioral problems from appearing later on. Here are some tips to help training go smoothly: Keep training classes short but interesting. This will help your Husky Poodle mix master commands more easily. Crate training is vital since this breed has a tendency to get into, chew and destroy stuff when left alone for hours. Positive reinforcement works better. Always be ready with your praises and have treats and rewards on hand. This will reinforce training and your dog will quickly learn that the proper behavior will lead to a good experience. Activities that involve obedience and agility can keep them calm and engaged since these require them to use their brains. This dog will flourish with an owner or family who has an active lifestyle. You can bring your Huskypoo with you as you run or jog. Likewise, people who lead very busy lives should not get a Husky Poodle. This dog also needs a lot of space, so a home with a yard or a spacious garden with a fence is ideal. Moderately energetic, she enjoys going for long walks, is excellent on leash, heeling attentively and feeling most secure being led by her foster mom. Then, when playtime calls, she stays happily occupied with her many stuffed animals, rope pulls and tennis balls, rawhides, hooves and cow bones. Exceedingly curious about the goings on around her, she also enjoys spending time looking out the window at the world or watching the action from the safety of the front yard. Highly intelligent and eager to learn, she recently graduated from a four-week board and training obedience program through American Canine Academy which offers FREE lifetime training support to adopters. Although friendly towards every female she meets, she remains wary of men and other animals and finds city life too distracting and stimulating for her. And to ensure that she matures into the best Afina she can be, her adopters must be loving and patient, dedicated and consistent guides, committed to continuing her in-depth training and providing her with a structured lifestyle in exchange for her own enduring loyalty and love. She delivered 9 healthy puppies who have found homes of their own. Jet is adjusting great to being a house dog. She is house trained and will whine when she wants to go outside. We do crate her when leaving the house and at night. Jet can get vocal in the crate, but with some work, yummy treats, and classical music she is doing much better. Jet does like to bark, she loves to watch out the window and let us know if anyone is passing by. For this reason I do not think she would be suited to an apartment. Jet has a bunch of energy. She loves to run in the back yard. We were told she may be a fence jumper, but so far she has stayed in our 4 foot fence. We do not let her out unsupervised. Jet would make a great activity buddy. She does really well in the car. She is still learning leash manners, but is doing ok. We went to Dog Day at the Morton Arboretum and overall she listened pretty well. The East Walk harness works wonders on her. Jet loves other dogs. She will try to make friends with any dog she meets whether they want to or not. She loves to wrestle and play tag. She will also wave toys in front of them to entice them to play. She loves all sorts of dog toys! Jet would do best in a home without cats or small critters. Jet has met several kids at adoption events. She has done well. She may be a little too rambunctious for really small children. We are working on manners. Jet does like to jump up. She will also play nip, we are working on curbing these behaviors. She has not tried counter surfing, but she does get really interested when we are eating. Jet is really a great dog. She is so sweet. She loves absolutely everyone she meets. She is quite the character and makes us laugh daily with her antics. As long as she has an outlet for her energy, she will settle in at night to watch tv. Please consider adding this amazing girl to your family. If you would like to meet Jet, please call Annie at

How to Wrap a Puppy as a Gift By: Author As an Amazon Associate, we may receive a small commission from qualifying purchases but at no extra cost to you. Learn more. Last Christmas, I was wondering what to get my son for Christmas. I initially thought of toys but then I remembered how he had been begging me to get him a dog all year. I especially kept wondering how I would wrap and present the dog. So, I did some research and found some amazing tips that other pet parents have used. Let me share what I learnt below. Puppy Experience Basket Wrapping a puppy in a box is a risky business because of the possibility of running out of air. Depending on the size of the pup and the space available in the box, he may also be too constrained for comfort, which could easily stress them out. A simple solution to this is to make a puppy experience basket instead. This basket will have a couple of dog-related items but you will not include the actual pup. Some of the items you can include in the box include puppy treats, chew toys, a dog collar, and a leash. So, just get an ordinary gift box and fill it with select dog items, and then wrap it with gift wrapping paper as you would wrap any other gift. This is a great way of gifting a pup without actually wrapping him up physically. Using a Blanket You could also wrap your puppy in a blanket. The best way to go about this is to use the burrito technique. To do this, let the puppy lie or seat on the blanket with their hind legs tucked in and then wrap the blanket around him. Make sure their head is not wrapped in to give them enough room to breathe. Use an Actual Gift Box If done right, you can wrap the pup in a box and present them as a gift. However, you do not want the dog to stay in the box for too long, so it is a good idea to wait until the last minute. A good trick is to wrap up a box and have it ready in the car and then place the puppy inside it just before you step into the house. You could put a dog treat or a chew toy in the box to help the pup stay occupied which will help them stay calm. As a precaution, you can perforate some holes on the sides of the box to allow for air to circulate through. Closing Thoughts So there you have it — 3 awesome ways you can wrap a puppy as a gift. Be sure to do some research and preparation before you think of gifting someone a dog. For instance, you want to know if they have fur allergies and also if they are ready and willing to take care of a dog for at least a decade. Dogs recovering from surgery are under strict instructions to limit their movements. This is especially true for dogs who get TPLO surgery for a torn CCL cranial cruciate ligament , one of the most common knee injuries in dogs. Dog puzzles and brain games are key to getting through the recovery period. These kinds of activities tire out pups more quickly than physical exercise. Since dog games are stationary exercises, they eliminate the risk of the dog re-injuring themselves before their limb is fully healed. Get well soon gifts for dogs recovering from that surgery You know the one … snip snip! If this get-well gift basket is for a puppy, be sure to include some teething chew toys. Once they reach eight weeks, changing to dry kibble food is best. We recommend feeding a Labrador puppy dry kibble for the first months before changing to an adult food type. But to remain healthy, owners should know what to feed them. Dog owners should feed a Labrador puppy dry food kibble , wet food, or fresh human food, depending on their budget and lifestyle. There are many options for food for dogs, and it can become challenging to determine which one is the best option for the dog. We have found the best options and listed them below. They help us with our daily tasks, are always there when we need them, and bring great joy to our lives. But, it is essential to ensure that our dog gets the best nutrition possible. They have a lot of energy and need to be fed accordingly. This includes the number of calories, food type, and the number of meals per day. We will explain all of these factors to help understand what to feed these precious animals. A Labrador puppy needs high-quality protein in their diet, so they should not be fed just any type of food. This is why we recommend three food options: dry food or kibble, fresh food or human food, or wet food. We prefer using dry food or kibble in most cases, but it is beneficial to start with wet food for young puppies and transition to dry food after a few weeks. Feeding a puppy human food is possible, but it can be more expensive and requires extra work to stick to a cleaner diet at this age. We have found it to be a healthier and more convenient option for our pets. It is also a good alternative to wet food which can be difficult to store and prepare. The benefits of dry dog food are that it offers the pup a balanced diet that doesn't need refrigeration. It also offers convenience because we can buy it in bulk and store it in the pantry or freezer until needed. Dry dog food is also less expensive than wet food, which is another benefit for pet owners. Fresh Food Human Food Feeding a Labrador puppy a diet of fresh, real human food is one of the best things to do for their health and well-being. It will not only make them happy and content, but it will also keep them healthy. This eliminates the guessing game; they are only fed real, natural foods with no unknown ingredients. However, it will become expensive and require regular cooking and preparation. Wet Food Wet food is recommended for Labrador puppies when they are first born and for the first weeks while they grow. It can be either raw or cooked. Wet food is a good source of water and minerals, which are important in the early days of their life to help them grow strong bones and teeth. It should be given to a puppy as soon as it comes out of its mother's womb, but it must not be given before it starts eating solid foods because it will cause diarrhea. Once they get more mature, moving to kibbles is best. It is known for its low level of grain and carbohydrate content and high protein content. Once they reach the week mark, there are better options to help the puppy continue to develop and grow. This food also helps with digestion and weight management. It also promotes proper bone growth with antioxidants and necessary nutrients like vitamin E. The kibble is also shaped strategically to help puppies who chew fast while helping with jaw growth. Overall, this is the best food option for a Labrador puppy. It is designed for all life stages, from puppies to seniors, and we love the benefits it provides to younger labs. This can be fed as a meal or as an occasional snack between meals. It has no artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, or added sugar. It also contains omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, which are important for healthy skin and the dog's coat. They are large, strong, intelligent dogs that need a lot of attention, exercise, and food. These dogs can be picky eaters and usually need a lot of calories because of their size. This is especially true for puppies so they can grow properly and remain healthy due to their increased risk of health issues. Food Type Labrador puppies' most popular dog foods are kibbles and canned wet food. Kibbles are the best option for a puppy because they are easy to chew and digest. Canned food is a good option for pups who have difficulty chewing or digesting dry food and would benefit from a little moisture in their diet. The food type also depends on the owner. Dry food or kibbles are faster to prepare, while serving human food to a lab puppy requires extensive prep time. Nutritional Value When it comes to nutritional value, we want dog food that has high-quality protein and carbohydrates. This will help the puppy grow strong and healthy. This is why we need to take into account the nutritional value, quality of ingredients, and taste. It should be made with all-natural ingredients that are sourced from human-grade materials such as vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. A brand should have all the essential nutrients for a pup but still, be low in toxic elements and preservatives too. Dietary Restrictions Lastly, consider the dietary restrictions of the Labrador puppy before choosing a dog food option. This includes any allergies or health concerns for the dog and shopping for something that suits them best. For example, lab puppies must reach a certain carbohydrate and protein number daily. Labradors are also known to have allergies, especially young ones, so planning around this is crucial. A puppy should be fed at least three times a day, with a meal size that is appropriate for its body weight. They should also be given small daily snacks to keep them satisfied and happy, including treats to help with training. We feed our puppies the best that we can. We want to give them all the nutrients and vitamins they need. We also want to make sure that they are getting a balanced diet. The most important thing when feeding a Labrador puppy is that they get enough calories from their food every day. In the first weeks, the puppy should eat four smaller daily meals. Once the lab reaches three months, this can be changed to three meals per day. And after months, we recommend two meals per day. The key is not to change the calories much when the meals change but to simply modify the size of each meal to fit the total daily food amount. Feeding a Labrador puppy is not rocket science, but there are some things everybody should know about what to feed them and when to feed them. We have covered this basis, but changes need to be made as they age. This leads to a common question about changing food to fit the needs of a grown adult Labrador. The dog's age will determine how quickly they grow and how much energy they need. Lab puppies can stick with kibbles for up to 12 months. Diamond Naturals Dog Food Review An additional reason for there being specific food for puppies is the pieces are smaller which not only prevents them from choking, it also makes the food easier to digest. The pieces are richer, denser and the ideal size for smaller mouths. These ingredients are where your pup gets the nutrients they need to grow and live, nutrients that are sadly lacking in the cheaper dog foods. With foods that are a bit more expensive, your pooch can eat a more well-balanced meal and enjoy it. They eat more, they poop more, and this means house training becomes much harder for you. What you feed your puppy is a major factor in the success of your house training process. Firstly, dry food tends to be more complete and balanced with the correct amount of vital nutrients in it. The ingredients tend to be of better quality as long as you pick the right brand. Plus, dry food helps to keep teeth strong due to being a solid food, and the slightly abrasive nature of the solid food has a natural teeth cleaning effect. It also lasts far longer than cans as you need to feed less of it. Royal Canin Breed Specific Labrador Puppy Royal Canin is a very well-known brand with lots of positive reviews from past and present dog owners on Amazon. It has an above average protein content than the minimum recommended for your dog, coming in at 31 percent protein at dry weight. The protein it has comes mostly from chicken by-product meal which is considered somewhat low quality and consists of whatever is left after chickens are slaughtered. However, it does NOT — as you might read elsewhere — consist of anything from feet to beaks. According to dogfoodadvisor. After chicken by-product meal, the second ingredient in this food is brewers rice. The fourth ingredient is corn gluten meal which is a residue left over once most of the useful, starchy carbohydrates have been washed out of it. With such popularity, high ratings and reviews with so many people saying their dogs thrive on this, there must be some truth to it. The third to 5th ingredients are wholesome whole grains that provide high energy from complex carbohydrates that are easy to digest. These are far better than corn and most other sources of carbs found in cheaper foods that are hard for a puppy to get any nutrition from. Out of everything in this product, 40 percent of it is protein, which is higher than average. About 14 percent of it is fat, and of the remainder, 38 percent is carbs. And the omega oils may help reduce risk of developing arthritis. Not only this, but Labradors are a large breed and are more sensitive to nutritional imbalances than smaller breeds. You really do need to get their diet right to do the best for them. Luckily, many brands of food specifically aimed at large breeds and Labradors have been created that provide everything they need in just the right amounts, that are easy for an owner to feed by simply following instructions on the packet. If you suspect your Lab has eaten any of the following, consult your vet immediately. Alcoholic beverages Can cause intoxication, coma, and death. Chocolate, coffee, tea Contain caffeine, theobromine, or theophylline, which can be toxic and affect the heart and nervous system. Fat trimmings Pits from peaches and plums Can cause obstruction of the digestive tract. Grapes and raisins Contain an unknown toxin, which can damage the kidneys. Gravy If made from meat juices, it can contain high levels of fat, which can cause pancreatitis. Large amounts of liver Can cause Vitamin A toxicity, which affects muscles and bones. Macadamia nuts Contain an unknown toxin, which can affect the digestive and nervous systems and muscle. Milk and other dairy products Some adult dogs do not have sufficient amounts of the enzyme lactase, which breaks down the lactose in milk. This can result in diarrhoea. Mouldy or spoiled food Can contain multiple toxins causing vomiting and diarrhoea and can also affect other organs. Mushrooms Can contain toxins, which may affect multiple systems in the body, cause shock, and result in death. Onions and garlic raw, cooked, or powder Contain sulfoxides and disulfides, which can damage red blood cells and cause anaemia. Garlic is less toxic than onions. Potato, rhubarb, and tomato leaves; potato and tomato stems Contain oxalates, which can affect the digestive, nervous, and urinary systems. This is more of a problem in livestock. Raw eggs Contain an enzyme called avidin, which decreases the absorption of biotin a B vitamin. This can lead to skin and hair coat problems. Raw eggs may also contain salmonella. Raw fish Can result in a thiamine a B vitamin deficiency leading to loss of appetite, seizures, and in severe cases, death. More common if raw fish is fed regularly. Excessive salt If eaten in large quantities, it may lead to electrolyte imbalances. Sugary foods Can lead to obesity, dental problems, and possibly diabetes mellitus. Table scraps in large amounts Table scraps are not nutritionally balanced and if excessively fed can lead to obesity. Fat should be trimmed from meat; bones should not be fed. Xylitol This artificial sweetener sneaks its way into all sorts of foods — from peanut butter to jellies and jams and is highly toxic to canines. After a dog consumes a significant amount of xylitol, there is a massive release of insulin from the pancreas. This, in turn, results in a dangerously low blood sugar level and symptoms such as weakness, trembling, seizures, collapse, and even death. Is a Labrador Retriever the right breed for you? These easy-going, rewarding dogs have high energy levels, and will thrive on lots of attention, positive reward-based training , plenty of exercise as well as the right nutrition to keep them happy and healthy throughout their lives. How often and what time to feed I will show you the best puppy foods, whether dry, wet, or raw, and look at food safety, together with schedules, quantities and even a handy puppy diet chart. Best Puppy Food for Labs The best Labrador puppy food provides a diet that is nutritious, healthy, and tasty. So, what is the best puppy food for your Lab? Puppy kibble or dried food is the most popular option. Kibble is complete and can give a perfectly balanced diet. Puppy kibble and tinned dog meat combined is another common choice among puppy parents. Feeding your Labrador puppy on home cooked food or on a totally raw diet is also possible. Raw puppy food is growing in popularity, and there are pros and cons to raw feeding your puppy. People often feel very strongly that one way of feeding is better than another, and you can always find evidence to support your view. Dog breeders, veterinarians and even nutritionists have their own strong views. The dire consequences they list for not listening to them can have puppy owners very worried. The truth is that there is no good quality evidence showing that kibble is better for the long term health of your dog, or that raw feeding is better. There are risks and benefits to both, and the main thing is to ensure that your dog has good quality food to eat. Puppy kibble suits some better, and raw puppy food is better for others. Puppy Kibble for your Labrador Puppy food made into pellets is called kibble. An airtight plastic container or tin will do the job, although you should make sure it is food grade quality. Puppy kibble is the best way of feeding your Labrador according to most breeders and your veterinarian is most likely to support this method of feeding. Good puppy kibble will contain every nutrient your Labrador puppy needs in order to grow and remain healthy. The kibble pieces will be tasty, good for keeping teeth healthy, and free from additives that can provoke allergies or stomach problems. Labrador puppy kibble only needs to be fed next to water. Puppy kibble from a reputable manufacturer is intended to be a complete and balanced food. But some owners like to mix in canned dog food or even scraps of raw food with kibble. Your puppy is likely to get an upset stomach or to not have the right balance of nutrition when fed this way. Whether you decide to feed only with kibble or you want to mix it up, pick a good dried food manufacturer and stick with them. Feeding your Labrador puppy raw food has its benefits and drawbacks. One of the downsides is that there is a lot to learn. Here is a link to the articles you need to help you decide whether or not raw feeding is for you: Although I like the raw diet for my dogs, most puppies fed kibble go on to have long and healthy lives. Whatever puppy food you choose, the most important thing is portion control. How Much to Feed your Labrador Puppy? People often tell me how much their puppy weighs, and ask how much puppy food they should give him. Your Labrador is particularly at risk if they grow too quickly. The following diet chart is for kibble fed puppies and does not apply to raw fed pups. It gives you an idea of how much to feed your Labrador puppy Lab Puppy Feeding Chart The Lab puppy feeding chart below is only a very rough guide. The quantity of food you need for your puppy will vary depending on your puppy and on the brand of food you are feeding him. Labrador puppy food must be aimed at medium to large breed dogs. Check the pack carefully and look at the dietary charts. Ideally, you want the optimal protein content and the lowest amount of additives. Part of this always comes down to the cost. The healthiest puppy food is usually the most expensive and may not be affordable for some families. The Cost Of Puppy Food Some puppy food brands are more concentrated than and contain a higher proportion of proteins, essential oils, and other nutrients. The absence of these fillers means that you can often feed lower quantities of more costly food, making them less expensive than they first seem. You might also find that cheaper brands make your puppy poop more due to those extra fillers going straight through him. While some brands are beyond the budget of many families, it is usually good to buy a premium brand. High Quality Brands of Puppy Food Some brands of puppy food have developed a reputation for producing a high quality product and have many devoted supporters, including breeders that have fed them to generations of puppies. The best large breed puppy food helps your Lab puppy dog grow into a healthy adult. What should I feed my Labrador puppy? One of the main differences between Lab puppies and smaller breeds is that Lab puppies have a lot more growing to do. For example, a Cavalier King Charles spaniel weighs about 8 pounds at three months old and grows to an adult size of about 15 pounds, their weight just about doubling. A Labrador puppy, on the other hand, weigh about 20 pounds and three months to about 65 pounds, more than tripling their weight. Because of this, large breed puppies grow and change a lot in the first few years, going through fast and dramatic bone changes. This makes them very sensitive to nutritional imbalances, which is why using the best puppy foods formulated for Labs helps them get the protein content and nutrients they need to promote healthy growth. That said, puppy food has more calories and vitamins than adult puppy food to support their rapid growth. Labs do not reach adult size until they are between 12 and 18 months old, and you should keep feeding them puppy foods throughout this time. What are the best foods for Labrador puppies? How much should I feed my 8 week old lab puppy? There should be detailed instructions on the side of the best puppy food for Labs packaging that tells you how much to use depending on the age of your puppy. A general guideline is four meals of two ounces per day at two months, three meals a day of about 3. Again, this is just a guideline. The best thing to do is follow the instructions on the package or ask your vet to be sure. Keep a close eye on your puppy, too. If they appear to be gaining weight, you may need to cut back a bit. They are what they eat Good health and longevity begin with good nutrition and quality ingredients for Lab puppies The educated dog owner strives to feed the best and most beneficial food that their budget allows. Even the choice of canned food versus dry is a big one, thanks to a wide variety of formulations, price points, and health claims with strong proponents on either side. Wet vs Dry Food for Puppies Both wet and dry food can give your puppy what they need. As we said, dry puppy food is more affordable and convenient than wet food. Dry food is also more calorically dense. Dry food is usually less than 10 percent water while wet food is as much as 75 percent water. So, dry food definitely gives you more bang for your buck. Your puppy or any large breed dogs will need to eat significantly more wet dog food to get the same amount of nutrition as it will get from a serving of dry food. Wet foods may be enough for a small puppy, but a large puppy like a Labrador would not be able to get by on wet food alone, which is why we recommend dry dog food. There are some cases in which you might want to consider mixing some wet food in with your Labs dry diet. Canned foods have ingredients that generally taste a lot better than dry food that puppies sometimes really like, so if you have a picky eater, this may help solve the problem. Wet food has a softer and more appealing texture for Labs, too. What about grain? Some dry dog foods contain a good amount of grain while wet dog food does not. Corn, wheat, and rice are often used to bind dry dog food and make it possible to have nice bite-sized pieces of kibble. This one way to tell high-quality Labrador puppy food from a low-quality one. There is a lot of debate about whether or not grains are good for dogs and puppies, including your Labrador puppy. Other people believe that wolves were scavengers and would have supplemented their diet with corn, roots, fruits, and vegetables when meat was scarce. Just remember that dry food is a little more economical and nutrient-dense. Look at the label. As you can see, nutrition is very important for large breed puppies like your Labrador puppy and it is very important to learn how to decipher the label. You should always be able to find a list of ingredients on the bag. This list is organized in descending order, meaning that the first ingredient is the one that the food contains the most of by weight and is what the puppies who are eating these foods are getting the most of. The first and second ingredients in good large breed puppy dog foods should always be meat of some kind, whether its chicken, lamb, of beef. You might see meat meal listed as the main ingredient. Like grains, the nutritional value of meat meal is often debated. Meat meal has less water than meat, which means it has more concentrated nutrition. Generally, this is not a bad thing. What you need to be aware of, though, is the quality of the meal. Some are made of waste products, like bones, hooves, and animal heads. Basically, the parts of the animal that you might not want your puppy to eat. What should you avoid? Any dog foods with ingredients described as an animal by-product meal or with a vague description like meat meal. Instead, look for clearly defined, honest ingredients like chicken meal, beef meal, or duck meal. If you decide to feed your Labrador puppy grains, look for whole grains on the label and avoid things like corn gluten meal or soybean meal. You should also always avoid artificial preservatives, colors, flavors, and sweeteners. Dental Health Another area where dry dog food has an advantage over wet food for your Labrador puppy is that dry food can help maintain good dental health. Some brands are shaped specifically to encourage chewing to scrape off plaque buildup as the puppy chews. Wet food, on the other hand, is believed to contribute to plaque. Because of its texture, it sticks to the teeth much more than dry food and may cause more plaque. Some studies done in the s showed that there really was no difference in the dental health of dogs who ate dry adult dog food versus those that ate wet, but things have come a long way since then. Some food brands have developed special shaped and textured pellets that have been proven to scrape off some plaque. Dave Nielsen I have lived in big cities my entire life. Having grown up on the Upper East Side in Manhattan, my early life was an exciting one, filled to the brim with interesting encounters and opportunities popping up at every street corner. Like many city people, my passion for dogs first started when my parents decided to bring a puppy into the household. For them, it was a way of getting me to spend less time at his computer or wandering aimlessly around the city with my friends. After a few years of doing basic cybersecurity and tech support work in various offices around Manhattan, I decided to leave New York and look for my calling in Boston, Massachusetts.

If they lie to you about availability, it is best to look elsewhere. A legitimate breeder will always ask that you bring in the proper paperwork when viewing the dogs. You should also ask about spaying and neutering of the puppies and about any other possible health problems the dogs might have. When you deal with a good breeder, you can be sure that the pet will be as healthy and happy as possible. Share this:.
