As soon as your arrive, you will be asked to remove your shoes and wear foot covers. You will also be asked to wash your hands. Long time, no see! Where the heck did the time go? It's absolutely crazy that it's been over 8 years since I've hopped on to this blog and shared snippets of life here at Calypso Breeze Australian Labradoodles. A lot has happened in that time, good and bad. Let's get the bad right out of the way. A little less than a year after my last blog post, I lost my husband and Calypso Breeze Co-founder, Jerry, to cancer. It was, for the most part, very sudden and set my world into a tailspin. There have been many ups and downs and trials and triumphs in the years since, but the constant has been that Calypso Breeze remains a huge part of my life. In the first months after Jerry passed, life, of course, was extremely difficult. I'm not sure what I would've done without the love- and distraction- of my crazy doodles. They're sweet and silly, kind and goofy, sometimes exasperating, but ALWAYS entertaining, and most importantly, they're loving. They have, most likely, held me together and they've definitely made me stronger. THIS is why I've continued on my journey of breeding these incredible dogs. The connection they have with their human is undeniable and nothing less than amazing. I've seen them help folks of all walks of life, with different abilities, and of different ages, in countless ways. And when I see this, it makes my heart smile. It fills my soul with a sense of joy, of contentment, of hopefulness that the world CAN be a better place. I still remember how proud he was when the trainer chose our dogs and how happy he was to see one of those dogs in action when she visited him in the hospital. I'm amazed at the many different tasks they can perform. Some assist with opening doors, carrying items, and retrieving objects, while others are seizure or diabetic alert dogs. Some help people with Autism or Down's syndrome, some are therapy dogs, some provide emotional support for their humans. Most of my puppies are family companions.And maybe I'm finally feeling my head bob above the surface of the water, but somehow I'm feeling a bit recharged. It seems as if life has been in a holding pattern for me, and I've not really moved forward could this be why I've not written a blog in several years? And now, I challenge you. If you are still up, active, and making noise, your puppy will want to join you. Creating a cozy and comfortable bed will also prepare your puppy for sleep. If possible, put a blanket or something with your scent in the crate with him. If that is not possible, a soft, warm blanket will still offer some comfort. Choose a dog bed for the crate that has raised sides so your puppy will feel cradled and protected. There are also toys designed to mimic another dog, such as the Snuggle Puppy , that can be a soothing toy for your puppy to cuddle. As always, use your best judgment when choosing items to put in the crate with your puppy; you do not want to put anything in the crate that could be a choking hazard. If your puppy just went to the bathroom but is still crying, comfort him by gently and quietly reassuring him with your voice, or quietly sitting by the crate until he falls asleep. Do not interact with your puppy in a way that gets him excited or playful. You also do not want to let him out of the crate in response to his crying. And remember: Even though you do not want to indulge his crying when he just wants attention, never punish your puppy for crying at night. When puppies are young, they need to go to the bathroom every hours. If your puppy cries during the night; is awake or unsettled; and it has been at least a few hours since he last went to the bathroom, then assume he needs to go again. Quietly take your puppy out without interacting much or playing with him. As soon as your puppy goes to the bathroom, immediately go back inside and quietly go back to bed. Leaving the crate to use the restroom should be all business—not a fun field trip. Some puppies can sleep through the night by 12 weeks old, but it could take longer for them to hold their bladders for hours through the night. Learn to Be a Morning Person Like babies, puppies will sleep when they need to sleep and wake up when they need food, water, playtime, or to go potty. Let your puppy sleep undisturbed as much as possible so they get the sleep they need. Eventually, your pet will learn your sleep routine and wake up in the morning when you do. But remember: Puppies need to go potty more frequently than adult dogs, so sleeping in might be challenging until your puppy is older. Because puppies are like babies, they will have moments of energy and being awake—and then suddenly they will be sleepy and need a nap. If your household is constantly full of noise and activity and your puppy struggles with napping during the day, consider putting your puppy in a quiet place to nap. He came with no vet records or history -- apparently his previous owner just dumped him at the rescue, along with his mother and sister, and drove away! Although he's still adjusting a bit, he seems to really love us and we are totally in love with him. He's quite healthy overall, outside of a little skin infection recently he's on antibiotics.The main problem we are having is at night. He used to sleep with his mom and sister, so we imagine this is contributing to the issue. We decided not to let him sleep in our bed and bought him a doggie bed which we put right next to ours. He in no way is isolated or goes to bed alone, we put him to bed every night when we go up to bed. He's our little shadow. Some nights that's fine, but most nights he wakes up multiple times -- generally right smack in the middle of the night! We'll get a 3am wake-up a 5am wake-up and, finally, the 7am when its all over. Not so much worried about the 7am but sometimes you wanna sleep in on the weekends, ya know? He gets walked 3 times a day and has consistent access to our backyard. We pick up his water around and head to bed before midnight Sometimes when he wakes up he needs to go out to pee or poop, but often he's seemingly just attempting to get into bed. We usually take him out back, just incase he needs the bathroom bc we've also been battling an old habit of his - peeing on his bed. The whole process can take 45 minutes or more and lately he has refused to settle back down into his bed and go to sleep. In desperation one of us has slept on the couch with him around 5am even though we're giving him positive reinforcement that way. When he's on the couch with one of us he's as happy as he can be and sleeps forever. Any advice for some sleepy bulldog owners on how we might help him sleep through the night? Evening Puppy Exercise Spend a good 10—20 minutes playing with your pup outside or inside a couple of times during the evening. Play a game of tug or get them interested in chasing a flirt pole. Not only will this tire them out, but it will also give them some important physical exercise. Evening Brain Games and Training Use the commercials during your evening television shows to practice some basic training cues with your puppy. Not only does this work their brains and take the edge off, but it builds your relationship with your puppy and promotes a solid training foundation. A puppy's attention span is pretty short, so keep training sessions short and sweet and spread them out throughout the day. Ditch the regular food bowl and use a puzzle feeder for your puppy's evening meal. Below are some of my favorite food puzzles and interactive feeders. They're fun for dogs and tricky enough to engage their brains, yet not so difficult that a dog will become frustrated and give up. I recommend starting with the West Paw Toppl featured below for your puppy's first interactive feeder , as the opening is wider than a Kong toy — making it easier to de-stuff and for you to stuff and then clean afterward! The repetitive nature of these things is self-soothing to your puppy much how activities like knitting are for us. The snuffle mat I recommended above is a great way to work their nose indoors, or you can scatter their food in the grass of your yard for them to sniff out. Freeze your puppy's meal in their Toppl to make it last longer or use a licking mat smeared with a tiny bit of peanut butter or wet food for a good lick session. Hyper Pet IQ Treat Lick Mat Spread a bit of your dog's wet food, peanut butter, pureed pumpkin, or low-fat greek yogurt on this mat to provide a soothing enrichment activity. Take your puppy out for a bathroom break as late as possible — ideally, the last person to bed should also take your pup to their potty spot. This helps empty them out, decreasing the chance of them needing to go in the middle of the night. Keep this last potty break calm and boring. You don't want your sleepy puppy finding their second wind! On this note, consider your puppy's evening mealtime. You don't want to feed your puppy too late in the evening that they need to go 2 in the middle of the night. However, if you feed them too early, they may be hungry at bedtime and that can make them restless. One way to prevent late-night hunger is to use food puzzles with small "snack-sized" portions of food as their pre-bedtime enrichment. When it comes to leaving water in your puppy's crate, I always recommend free access to water at all times. Water is a "primary resource" — meaning your puppy needs it to survive. And there are some medical conditions that require access to drinking water at all times. But, if your puppy is waking up continually during the night because they need to urinate, speak with your veterinarian to first rule out medical reasons such as a urinary tract infection and then discuss with them whether restricting access to water before and during the night is a good choice for your puppy. Keeping a puppy potty log can really help you determine your puppy's natural potty schedule, which can help you adjust feeding times to increase longer sleep time at night. It's all about being proactive — with an alarm, your puppy won't wake up feeling like they're ready to burst and start whining or crying in their crate. Accordingly, Bulldogs have been placed in the non-sporting group by the American Kennel Club and are biologically predisposed to be less active than their working counterparts. For as adorable and distinctive as their faces make them, bulldogs have a host of health issues because of it. The broad, short-snouted head shape that bulldogs have is referred to as brachycephalic. These types of dogs have difficulty with heat regulation and proper breathing, so even moderate amounts of exercise wear them out and even put them at risk for heat-related illness. Thier big head can also make it difficult to find a properly sized collar , too! As goofy and fun-loving as they are, bulldogs usually need to end playtime with a nice nap to cool off and get proper airflow. Reason 4: Young Bulldogs Need Extra Sleep To Grow Since puppies are famous for being playful and energetic, you may be wondering how on Earth they sleep hours a day. But anyone who has been around a bulldog puppy knows that they can go from running around the room to snoring at the drop of a hat- no matter what the time! According to veterinarian Jeff Warber in an interview with Yahoo! News , puppies experience rapid muscular, mental, and physical growth. This makes play and exercise important for the healthy development of a young bulldog in every way, which wears them out quickly. With all the food that they eat and the growing that they do, bulldog puppies need quite a bit of shut-eye throughout the day! Reason 5: Older Dogs Need More Sleep In its later years, a bulldog will likely sleep more as part of the aging process. Senior dogs may sleep hours a day, and even hours a day is considered normal. Even perfectly healthy elderly dogs will become significantly less active throughout the day. Bulldogs are unfortunately susceptible to sleep disorders— namely, sleep apnea. Of course, there are a few more common causes to consider before jumping to the conclusion that your dog has this issue. Reason 1: An Irregular Sleep Schedule Although your dog might not be able to read your watch, it still has a biological clock! Like most mammals, dogs have a circadian rhythm that acts as a hour timer to regulate sleep. In wild dogs, this pattern would be synchronized with the natural light pattern of the rising and setting sun. Domestic dogs may not share the same sleep patterns as humans, but we often sleep at the same time. This is fine when we have regular sleep, but life events or unexpected changes may require us to wake and sleep at odd times. All of us have to adjust our sleep-schedules every now and then, but frequent changes can be problematic for both you and your bulldog. Reason 2: Sickness A sleepy bulldog is by no means guaranteed to be sick, but lethargy is a common sign of a variety of diseases and medical conditions. Extreme tiredness is often an early sign of parvovirus or other infections. In these cases, it is often paired with other symptoms, such as fever, vomiting, abnormal appetite and sudden weight-loss. Metabolic disorders can also cause tiredness and present with a variety of symptoms. These include changes in appetite, changes in weight, and excessive thirst. There are plenty of other possible medical causes for tiredness in your pup , including anemia, poisoning, and even canine depression. Narrowing down the cause from dozens of potential health issues requires the aid of a vet for proper identification and treatment. As cute and funny as snoring can be every now and again, it can indicate sleep apnea, a potentially life-threatening disorder. Sleep apnea is when a dog frequently stops breathing in their sleep and is jolted awake throughout the night. This is as scary as it is dangerous for your pup. Due to their easily obstructed airways, sleep apnea in bulldogs is so common that they are often used as models for it in studies. That said, sleep apnea is preventable in every breed. In humans and dogs alike, the biggest predictors for sleep apnea are obesity and old age. Keeping your bulldog fit can go a long way in saving its health and its sleep. Along with many others, narcolepsy, insomnia, and REM behavior disorders are all conditions your dog could face. Defined simply as a disorder that can make falling and staying asleep difficult, insomnia is a multifaceted condition. Underlying causes such as arthritis pain , nighttime incontinence, and stress are often culprits, but insomnia can be a diagnosis in and of itself. Insomnia often develops in senior dogs and can be the result of diseases such as early Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome. If your dog is showing signs of insomnia, a vet visit for proper diagnosis is in order. Reason 5: Neurological Conditions Poor sleep may be the result of two major neurological conditions— narcolepsy and REM sleep disorder. As opposed to sleep apnea, narcolepsy is most commonly observed in puppies. Narcolepsy is a genetic disorder that results in abnormal neurological patterns and low production of hypocretin, a hormone responsible for alertness. A narcoleptic dog will fall asleep seemingly out of nowhere, especially when excited. Often, narcolepsy is paired with another disorder known as cataplexy, which is the temporary paralysis of your dog. Narcolepsy is an incurable and life-long condition, but is neither dangerous nor uncomfortable for your pup in most circumstances. Even so, if you suspect your dog has narcolepsy, you should speak to your veterinarian for further information. REM behavior disorders have a less understood cause than narcolepsy and can develop at any age. All dogs let out a sleep-woof or twitch at times, but REM sleep disorders are visibly more extreme than this and far more likely to disrupt sleep. Below is an example of a dog with a REM movement disorder. If you were constantly running in your sleep, you would be exhausted too! REM sleep disorders may not be entirely curable, but prescribed medicine from your vet such as clonazepam can do wonders in reducing symptoms. Thankfully, there are a few easy ways to help your dog get enough shut-eye. Set a Schedule Dogs may have adjusted their sleep schedules to match ours somewhat, but at the end of the day there are some key differences between the sleep of us and our canine friends. Dogs have polyphasic sleep, meaning their sleep is split up throughout the day. Usually, the best way to do this for everyone involved is for you to have a set bedtime as well. Humans have a pretty elastic sleep cycle. Giving your dog a comfortable environment before it goes to sleep is important to ensure quality of sleep and avoid interruptions. Environmental cues such as location or events can easily shape biological functions for our canine friends. Giving your bulldog a designated bed and area to sleep in may help signal to your dog that sleep time has begun. For bulldogs, overheating is an uncomfortable and disruptive possibility. Keeping them in a cool but not cold! One way to ensure they sleep at the correct temperature is to get them a specific bed. An elevated bed such as this or a dog bed with cooling gel like this can help keep your pup cool throughout the night. When their environment is dark, a dog produces melatonin to promote sleep. Keeping the room dark before and during sleep is always a good idea. Despite previous theories, this cohabitation rarely disturbed sleep and was therapeutic and psychologically healthy for both parties involved. Rex also suffered from irritable bowel syndrome a very messy condition , which requires prescription food and medication in order to be completely managed. The treatment and maintenance of these two chronic conditions meant Rex was unlikely to thrive in a shelter environment, but the rescue network saw that this could be a happy dog and connected him with Kingston Animal Rescue. At times, he could not move them properly, they would seize up, and he would drag his back feet until they were bloody or be almost immobile. The amazing animal loving community came together to help get Rex more care, so he went for a specialist visit to Ottawa. This meant the padding between two of his lower, spinal vertebrae was misplaced and being pinched. In early March, Rex had surgery to correct the compression. Following a successful surgery, he underwent rehabilitation to regain his strength and mobility; he was so lucky to find himself in a home dedicated to getting him back on his feet. Make sure as well that you have what you need to effectively train your dog. If you're planning to clicker train, get a clicker. If you're planning to crate train, get the right-sized crate. Also be sure to pick up an appropriate collar and leash for general training. A leash should be no more than five to six feet in length. The best leashes for training are leather. Always check your equipment to make sure it is in good order and not liable to snap or break. Training works best when you dedicate a couple of short sessions 10 to 15 minutes twice a day to it. By enforcing commands in public places it helps your Boxers to understand he must obey under all circumstances. Leave no room for doubt about what is acceptable behavior for your Boxer puppy. If he is not allowed on the furniture, be consistent. Boxers won't understand the concept of "sometimes"; they are either permitted to lie on the couch or they are not. If you live with other people, make sure that everyone in the house is on board with the training program. Using different words for the same action will confuse the dog, disrupt the training already done, and ultimately delay progress. But at the moment, they need your guidance. For now, this includes sleeping next to you for the first few weeks, maybe even longer. Just have their crate or bed close to wherever you sleep. Dogs can resource guard food, a toy, even a person. You can do this by teaching them that hands and touch can be a good thing. As always, back up your soft touches with some treats. Remember that consent is also a thing with dogs! Never force your Boxer to be handled or pick them up against their wishes. While most dogs can be trained at any age , there are instances when an owner may need to provide professional dog training. A dog with a very stubborn behavior or a previously neglected dog that spent years without any guidance may benefit from professional training. You may begin training your Boxer dog these basic commands when the dog is 2 months old. No matter what age you dog, new tricks and training can be instilled.Come This is such a simple command, but should not be overlooked. It is extremely important that your Boxer understand this command. It will be needed in many circumstances and will most likely - at some point - keep your dog from running into a dangerous predicament. To train your dog to come at command, keep your Boxer on a long leash or with you in an enclosed area. Move 5 to 6 steps away from him and then call out the command. The command word should be "Come" not 'come here' or any other variation. Simply calling his name should be for more informal circumstances.This command means that you are serious. A long sentence, such as "Come here Roxy, over here! You will want your dog to immediately come to you with 1 word. Say the command word, kneel down and make a motion for your Boxer to come over to you. Reward him with a small treat. Your words of praise and happiness will make the biggest impression. Dogs love to please their owners. If you behave as if your dog just performed the most wonderful act, he will be more likely to repeat it. Work on this command from further and further away. Once your Boxer understands this word and shows a good ability to listen to you, move on to other locations that are not so familiar. The goal is to have your dog listen to this command, no matter where you are. What could make training for this command difficult? If - outside of training - you call your dog to come to you and then reprimand him or her in a negative way. For example, if your dog has had a housebreaking accident, never use this command to speak negatively to him. Sit A well behaved dog that listens to you makes for a more peaceful household. Directing your dog to "Sit" is an important command. You may need to use this command when visitors arrive at your home and many other occasions. Training a Boxer dog in regard to the Sit command will be begin by bringing your dog into a room without distractions. Have a treat in your hand. Hold the dog treat a bit above his nose. As he notices the treat, move your hand straight across his back. This usually makes the dog sit as he tries to follow where the treat went. If your dog does not completely sit, use your other hand to press down on his rear until he is in a complete sitting position. At that time, firmly say the command word "Sit". It will be your job to make sure that your Boxer understands that what he is doing has a corresponding word. At the very moment a dog completes an action and is in the desired position, a treat should be given. You'll want to be quick.It is also important to incorporate the command word with the praise as it reinforces the learning. You will want to say "Good Sit" or "Good - fill in the blank with the command word". As you work on this training, you should be able to back away from your Boxer and give the command from across the room. After a while, your dog should follow your command without needing a treat. After 20 to 30 successful repetitions, the action becomes automated with no expected treat; though praise will help reinforce the behavior of following commands. A "Good boy! Heel If you assume you will always be walking your Boxer on a leash and do not need to teach him the "Heel" command, think again! Did you ever see someone being walked by their dog? You should not be behind him or her, essentially allowing them to lead the way. Your dog should be by your side, walking together in tandem. When you walk with your Boxer, as he grows from cute little puppy to a large and strong dog, you will want your dog to walk with you. Walks will not be pleasant if your Boxer is trying to pull you along the street. With you in control, you should be going at your pace and taking corners or moving around obstacles in the direction that you choose. Begin by having your dog on a short leash. Hold a treat in your hand. Say the command word, "Heel". Begin walking. Take 6 or 7 steps. If your dog walks nicely beside you, stop and give him the treat. Say words of praise that include the command word such as, "Good dog, you learned to heel". Whenever your Boxer does not walk along side you, do not give him the treat. You must stop walking, allow the dog a moment to recoup and begin again. As time goes on, your goal will be to be able to take more and more steps before giving the treat. Always use the command word. If your Boxer has learned to walk with you for quite a distance, repeat the word in a pleasant tone as the 2 of you stroll down the street. Give an occasional treat and certainly give words of praise. A dog can never receive enough positive reinforcement.
