Our Golden Irish puppies tend to be darker in color. How'd we start? Growing up my wife's family raised Pekingese. She loved their dogs and the litters of puppies that came and went. We wanted our children to have a family dog and to share the puppy experience with them and so we chose to raise Golden Retrievers. My family had a Golden Retriever growing up. My wife always dreamed of having a Golden Retriever or Irish Setter. We got our first Golden in and named her Mandy. We had 4 wonderful children ages 7 to 17 and our lovely dog Mandy. Mandy went everywhere with us. We lived on acres along the Calapooia River where the children would explore with Mandy at their side. Our 2 boys were passionate about the outdoors and loved to hunt and wanted a specific dog to train. It wasnt hard to convince their mom, but took a little longer to convince me. But convince me they did. They chose a male and of course named him 'Big Red'. The boys did an amazing job training the 3 dogs. We had the 4 dogs and plenty time and attention to offer them with the energy and passion from the 4 children. They were much calmer than most Irish Setters, and were more athletic than most Golden Retrievers. We knew these dogs would be a hit, and they have been. Over and Over we heard how they were the best family dog they ever had. Why we Continue The Golden Irish was not merely something stumbled on by accident. The original accident was precipitated by a years long love of both the Golden Retriever and the Irish Setter. I was fascinated with the grace and freedom that contrasted the Irish Setter from more conventional setters in the story. He, rather, romanticized the hunt as a thing natural to the dog and foreign to the dogs human companion. Big Red knew what he was doing when he hunted. Big Red was the master hunter and Danny was his mere apprentice. Irish Setters can be strong willed. They are intensely loving and loyal but they do not have the level of automatic obedience seen in some breeds. They are majestic animals who do require some work during training to reach their potential. Unfortunately, because as the world has urbanized, the required space for an Irish Setter to shine has become rare, and this magnificent breed has seen declining popularity. Irish Setters are creatures of the open fields and the ubiquity of automobiles has ensured open fields are rare. We are fortunate to live in an area of the country still rural enough to allow the Irish Setter to run. But even we have to find time and space to give our dogs this opportunity. After almost 20 years experience with both Goldens and Irishes I have concluded that the main character trait differentiating the Golden Retriever and Irish Setter is patience. The Golden Retriever was bred to patiently wait for the hunt. The Irish Setter was bred to go out and make the hunt happen. Both love to chase things. Both can have seemingly boundless energy. Both are loyal companions. The Golden Retriever will wait for the ball to be thrown and the Irish Setter will grab the ball and expect to be chased. Caution needs to be taken, especially in the summer, as with other flat faced dogs, breathing can be problematic in the heat and humidity of summer. Walks in the summer need to be short because of their physical characteristics. They are not excessively energetic dogs but are usually willing to participate in the family activities. They also do not need a lot of space and so are often good companions for apartment dwellers. Playing inside in the air conditioning during the summer is usually enough physical exercise for Pugs. Overall Pugs are wonderful companions, with a cheerful disposition and they are not one of the main breeds we are called to help fix problems with. While, as I mentioned, they are not one of the dogs that we get huge numbers of calls for help with, Dogs are all individuals and so their individuality needs to be considered when working with them. There are many great dogs looking for good homes! Check all local shelters as well as sometimes they have Pugs that for no fault of theirs have ended up there. Be sure to speak to shelter management to find out why the dog was surrendered. Sometimes a mixed breed with Pug in the mix might be a good way to go. If you strike out, then be sure choose a reputable breeder. Check out the AKC for a list of breeders close to you. Many dogs are abandoned for the wrong reasons and some folks are not fully prepared to do what it takes to train and educate a dog. All Shelters give their dogs health checks to make sure they are in good shape and up-to-date on vaccinations and will make you aware of any behavioral issues. Just the same way children need their own room a dog needs its own space, a place it can go when it needs to get some peace and quiet. Create a bed for your dog that is exclusively its place. Make sure it is warm and covered. Create a den like place, dog love dens, that can be covered and dark for them. When we are called upon to treat behavioral issues, we often find that the dog has no designated sleeping area. Its needs a leader and someone it can look to for direction. Just having a perceived, safe place is not enough for a dog. A dog might be in a safe place, but if it has feelings of insecurity that stem form a lack of leadership, then a normally confident dog might feel threatened by the sounds around it. Make sure you provide guidance and structure to your Pug. Simply said, that if you want a well-adjusted and well-behaved Pug, then you need to set some rules and stick to them. Mind stimulation is more important than physical exercise. Your Pug will tire far quicker if you give him some entertainment that gets him using his brain. So, make sure you look to provide some entertainment for your dog. Some suggested games include: Hide and Seek. Fetch — Pugs are great sports and love to chase balls and play with toys. Your dog will love a rousing game of fetch challenge yourself to see how far you can throw it. In addition to physical entertainment, your Pug will benefit from some brain work. Our dogs need mental stimulation as part of their daily routine. You fill the toy with some small treats, and your Pug must decide how to get the treats out through the small holes. It will keep them entertained for hours! The pet parent enters important dog information plus a picture. Whoever finds the dog can simply scan the tag using a cell phone and the owner gets a text message to say someone has found your dog. No waiting to get to the vet office to scan a microchip and no renewal fees or any extra charges! Microchips are important and you should always have your dog microchipped as that is a great tool to identify legal owners etc. Helping you lead Walking Your Pug These harnesses are ideal for those little dogs like the Pug that may pull on the leash. Pulling while walking is not good for your dog and can damage its skeletal frame and do damage to its trachea. As previously mentioned, early education is important. Making sure your Pug walks properly on a leash is an important exercise. If your dog pulls on the leash, it can be damaging its skeletal frame. You should always start this training in the home and start with short walks and make them fun and educational. No need to go for long walks while educating. Introducing the Leash Always start with a fixed collar and accustom your puppy to the feel of the new collar. It will feel odd at first and they will try and scratch at it. Always try to distract them using a treat or a toy. Many folks struggle to control their dogs when out on a walk regardless of their size. Similar to the gray, blue, and silver dogs, they can only be achieved through multi-generational breeding. The color of every dog is a product of its two main pigments, eumelanin and pheomelanin. Eumelanin is black in default, but it also produces certain diluted colors due to the genes inherited by the dog. The second pigment, which is pheomelanin, is primarily red, but it can become apricot, cream, tan, and other similar shades when altered by dilution genes. This is much, much more accurate and dependable than the old Mendelian filial F1, F1b, etc. The gene responsible for furnishings is dominant; so by testing the parent dogs DNA, it can be determined if a breed pair will produce puppies that all have furnishings, or if there will be some puppies with an incorrect or Golden Retriever like coat. Dogs with one copy of the furnishings gene Ff or F IC are lower shedding than dogs without furnishings. Dogs with two copies of furnishing genes FF are typically non-shedding.
