Weather you just need a friend, or you need a therapy or service animal that will be able to provide you with assistance and companionship that you need. Our Dogs are family and are raised in a home that loves Jesus and honors God above all else. They are raised in a happy, calm, loving environment where they can flourish and learn to be calm, trusting, and helpful, while having fun. They care about who gets their dogs and not just anyone will qualify which is good. The delivery and care my pup has been amazing. I highly recommend Pedigree Standard Poodles to anyone wanting the best bred pet they can find. They have made our family complete and are such a joy in every way. In fact after meeting mine, my aunt and a friend of mine also decided on a Pedigree Standard Poodle for their next puppy. They practically come trained from day one. You cannot do better than a puppy from Holly and Adam. I'm always leery about purchasing a pet from a breeder but I felt a lot more comfortable when they asked me a bunch of questions before giving me info on the pups. They care about their pups and want to make sure they choose the best furture pet parents for their babies. They made sure my baby was ready before sending her on her way and have been very helpful answering any questions or concerns I had since I'm new to the poodle life. Love my Dante boy! Adam and Holly are the best. Their care, compassion, well-rounded knowledge, is premiere. As new poodle owners, we had many questions and all of them were answered with patience and certainty. This is my 5th poodle and first standard poodle and has been by far the best experience yet. She fits in with the family perfect and is so chill and eager to please. I would very highly recommend them. These guys definitely put in quality into their breeding. Our Pongo is great with our kids, very calm and loving. Excellent temperament and super smart. Adam and Holly were even there for us months after we had our pup, not typical of breeders to help you after the purchase of your puppy. Probably will never buy a puppy from anyone else moving forward. Thanks for the care and compassion of our puppy and making sure our family has a great member of the family. Holly and Adam spend countless hours working with their pups and it shows! Our 12 week old puppy could already sit and shake when we picked him up, along with leash and collar trained. He is one of the most well behaved puppies I have ever seen, not to mention his coat is flawless. Great owners and great genes!! Pedigree Poodles are the best!!! So thankful to have my dream dog! Forequarters Hindquarters To show your poodle in competitions, they will not only need to exhibit quality characteristics but will need to have AKC paperwork to prove their bloodlines. Even dog owners who have no interest in showing or breeding their pets should be wary of who they purchase their poodles from. Some unethical breeders may sell mixed breed puppies at purebred pricing. Exploring the Basics of the Poodle Breed Poodles are a great breed for many families due to their energetic, yet friendly temperament and easy training abilities. However, they can be lonely dogs if left alone for too long and need a fair amount of regular care. Smaller breeds do not need a lot of space and can be great apartment dogs, but they do have moderately high levels of energy that they need to run off each day. From smallest to largest of the breed are the Toy, the Miniature, and the Standard poodle. The oldest of the three is the Standard Poodle. The basic size guide for these poodles is: Toy — 10 inches and under at the shoulder Miniature — 10 inches but not over 15 inches at the shoulder. Usually between 13 and 15 inches. Standard — Over 15 inches at the shoulder Average are 22 to 27 inches. The smallest members of the poodle breed are the toy, teacup and miniature poodles. Visit this article to learn about the history and characteristics of each. While the sizing of the breed clearly varies, they all have similar features and personality traits that most owners love. They were once thought of as prissy or regal pets, but they are actually very athletic, eager, and extremely smart. They can be trained with great success and are extremely obedient with proper care. Unless you are hoping to show or breed your pup, this does not exactly matter. However, knowing your pup is purebred can also help you get a better idea of its final size, stature, and shape. Also, you can learn more about the temperament and behavioral characteristics that your pet will have later on in life, as mixed breeds may not have the friendly demeanor most poodles do. Is Your Poodle Pup a Purebred? Luckily, each dog breed has a basic standard laid out that you can follow to learn more about what your pup should look like. The AKC website has the specifications for many breeds listed so that you can compare your dog to the breed standards. However, this can be challenging as even purebred dogs can differ slightly in appearance. We will further discuss the ways to figure out if your dog is a purebred poodle and be more certain of this. However, going by appearance alone can help you narrow down your search for a purebred poodle and can help you ensure that your pet is of full blood. Some of the key characteristics that you want to look for when analyzing your dog are: The General Appearance of Purebred Poodles Most poodles have similar personalities, as mentioned above. While this can differ from dog to dog, many poodles are very active, intelligent, and elegant appearing. You should notice a square build to their bodies, fairly well proportioned, and they usually carry themselves proudly. Head Shape Purebred poodles have a moderately rounded head with a slight but definite stop. The cheekbones and muscles are flat. Coat Texture A great giveaway of if your poodle is purebred is by its coat as these are a non-shedding breed. This makes the dog a great choice for those with allergies and most can keep poodle with no reactions. No matter the shade, your poodle should have curly, wiry hair that is fairly dense. These dogs need to be groomed regularly and if you are considering showing the dog, you will need to learn more about the different styles. Some who simply own but do not show their poodle style them in crazy ways, but the American Kennel Club only allows four shapes: Continental Sporting Puppy Clip — for dogs under a year Check out this article for much more on the different kinds of poodle hair and pictures for each. Body Unlike many other breeds, the poodle has fairly snug skin and you will not see a lot of sagging. They have a strong, muscled shoulder. They should have a topline that is level, it should not slop nor roach from the highest point of the shoulder blade to the base of the tail. There should only be as light hollow behind the shoulder. The chest is deep and should be moderately wide with ribs that stand out. The loin is shorter, broad and muscular. Also, the tail should be straight and high set, but you will want it to be docked to a length that ensures a balanced outline. Forequarter Shape As mentioned, the shoulders should be strong and muscled and the should blade is laid back and around the same length as the upper foreleg. The forelegs themselves should be straight and parallel when viewed from the front of the dog. At a side view, the elbow is directly below the highest point of the shoulder. The feet of most poodles are rather small and oval-shaped with toes that are arched. The pads on each foot should be cushioned and thick, for showing the dewclaws can be removed and nails should be groomed. The feet of the dog should not turn in or out. Hindquarter Shape The hindquarters should balance out the forequarters in shape. The hind legs are straight and parallel when viewed from behind. You will notice the dog is muscular, with stifles that are well bent. The femur and tibia are about equal in length. Where to Buy Your Purebred Poodle? While these physical characteristics can tell you a lot, it can be hard to differentiate between true purebred poodles and other breeds. This is where purchasing from a quality breeder is key. If you are buying a poodle puppy, you want to ensure you are buying the best. While there is nothing wrong with adopting a pet or rescuing a dog, if you are paying a purebred price, you want a purebred pup. There are four main ways to get a poodle puppy, these are: From a purebred dog breeder A backyard dog breeder A local rescue shelter or poodle rescue shelter Buy from a Purebred Breeder A purebred breeder is the best way to guarantee that you are getting a poodle puppy that has show quality bloodlines. These breeders usually take their job seriously and take great pride in their pets. You can find breeders who focus on standard, miniature, or toy sizes. Though these are often the most expensive puppies on the market, they are usually the safest option. You will often see these breeders divide their puppies into two categories show quality and pet quality. Show quality puppies are usually the top of the litter and can be more expensive. Most quality breeders will only sell to individuals who have been interviewed and vetted. You should be able to tell from the first time you speak to the breeder that they love poodles and want the best for their pups. It may take a while to find a poodle at your local shelter, but this does happen periodically. You can also find organizations that are dedicated to taking on poodles that no longer have homes, these are a great option if you are willing to research and maybe travel. While these dogs are not necessarily the best for showing purposes, they are great for homeowners of all types. Plus, older poodles are usually housebroken and are past the pesky puppy stage. Also, most adoption fees are lower than what it costs to purchase from a breeder. Avoid Puppy Mills or Backyard Breeder While some backyard breeders are amazing people and have great pups, these are usually accidental puppies. This means that some breeders advertise their puppies as purebred, but they may be mixed due to the accidental pregnancy. This means you may be buying a pup that you believe is full poodle but is really half poodle and half the random dog down the street. Puppy mills are something you should truly just avoid all together! These individuals are usually solely in the breeding business for money and put little care into the dogs they own. Often these poodles are not purebred, and the puppies are not cared for before purchase. Ask for a Pedigree If you are purchasing a puppy or older dog from a breeder, you should ask if they have pedigree papers. This will mean the puppy has either been KC or AKC registered and this style of pedigree is only given to purebred dogs. If your breeder gave you a pedigree upon purchases, you can almost be certain that your pup is purebred. This will show you any awards or accomplishments they may have made during their lifetimes. This is great for those who want to show the puppy later on. In the rare case that your breeder is dishonest, you may have an invalid pedigree. However, this is rare, but some breeders have lied about the parents of puppies in the past. If your puppy begins to look less like a poodle than you were expecting, this could be why. How Much do Poodles Cost? One of the best ways to ensure that your puppy is a purebred poodle is the price your breeder asks. The price for standard, miniature, and toy poodles will vary from breeder to breeder, but you can expect to pay around the same amount from reputable breeders. Of course, as mentioned, a show pup will cost more than a puppy that is pet quality. These pet-quality puppies usually lack the ideal coat color or appearance to compete in shows. However, they are still great pets if you do not have the budget or desire for a show dog. Also, some puppies that are in less demand, smaller, have a negative temperament, etc. Purebred, quality puppies can cost in the thousands. If you notice that the puppy is extremely lower in cost, this can be a sign that you are not purchasing a purebred dog. Though it may seem odd considering size, most miniature and toy-sized poodles are more expensive than standard-sized poodles. The reasoning behind this is that standard-sized poodles have much larger litters, making them more worth it for the breeder. While smaller dogs have smaller litters, making them more expensive to breed. Other Ways to See if Your Pet is Purebred Whether you just purchased your poodle pup, or you have had your dog for years, you may be interested in their true lineage. A great place to start when it comes to deciding if your pet is purebred is to take them to the vet and simply ask their opinion. Veterinarians usually see hundreds of the same breed during their time in business, they should know more about what to look for. While a simple visit to the vet cannot guarantee that your pet is purebred, they can identify a lot from their general appearance. They are more knowledgeable on the appearance of an average poodle and can compare your pet. Based on appearance alone they can usually rule out if your pet is a mixed breed or more likely to be purebred. These services differ but some vets do offer this service and can handle the collection of the DNA for you. You can also purchase an at-home DNA kit from Amazon here. These tests require you to do a bit more work by collecting and submitting the DNA samples. However, there could be significant cost savings by employing this method. These will differ but many go back to the great-grandparents which are usually enough to guarantee if they are purebred or not. If you do have a puppy, you can learn more about what other breeds they are mixed with should this be the case. Does it Matter if a Poodle is Purebred? While this may be information you want to know, at the end of the day it may not mean anything to you at all. Most good pet owners will not sell or get rid of their dog simply because it is not purebred, especially after having it for some time. However, if you are just purchasing a puppy for show purposes, it can be extremely important for your dog to be purebred. If you follow the steps previously mentioned, you are more likely to get a puppy that is purebred, and you will have no issues. If it is extremely important to you, you should have the puppy examined by a vet, DNA tested, or ask for pedigrees to guarantee its lineage before purchasing or quickly thereafter. Some breeders will take the puppy back if it is proven to not be purebred, but this is very situational. If you are just purchasing your puppy to keep as a pet, you may find that poodle mixed breeds are a great option. These dogs can still feature many of the great qualities that poodles possess and can become great pets. I hope you found it helpful. Breeders developed Toy Poodles in 18th century England as smaller versions of their German predecessors. The Toy Poodle began to represent social status, and nobles would decorate their dogs in high fashion of the time. They became so popular, in fact, that they were one of the first toy breeds recognized by the Kennel Club. Toy Poodles are smart cookies. Their intelligence is one of their predominant features, and is often showcased during obedience training. These dogs have tremendous problem-solving capabilities that make them ideal for competitions. On the other hand, this same intelligence makes for an easily bored pup. They need mental stimulation, like challenging games and toys , to keep their busy minds occupied. The Toy Poodle may also be suspicious of strangers and slow to warm up to new people. This dog breed can adapt to a wide range of living situations due to their small size. As a matter of fact, they have trouble dealing with any kind of alone time. As such, the Toy Poodle is an excellent companion animal for people who love a little company. There are a few health conditions that Toy Poodles are more susceptible to than other dog breeds. For example, they may suffer from eye disorders, like cataracts, or blood clotting disorders, like Hemophilia. Because of their size, they may also bear the risk of dental crowding, kneecap migration, or trachea instability. With regular visits to the veterinarian, many of these potential health concerns can be comfortably managed. Owners typically have an easy time during obedience training with Toy Poodles. Their intelligence often hastens the training process. However, they can present destructive tendencies when left to their own devices for too long. Toy Poodles have famously low-shedding coats. They lack undercoats, so their shedding is minimal. Their fur is hypoallergenic and mats rather than sheds. These pups will only need to be groomed to prevent matting and increase shine. Usually, brushing your Toy Poodle once or twice a week and grooming every six weeks is sufficient. As a small dog breed, they are more prone to developing dental disease so good dental care is important. Poodles are an active breed in general, and Toy Poodles in specific are just as active. After a few laps around the kitchen, the Toy Poodle will tire out and happily sit by their owners during daily activities. The Toy Poodle stands at a mighty inches at the shoulder. Their weight ranges from pounds and usually averages around 8 pounds. Toy Poodles usually live 12 — 15 years. The Poodle coat is built for the water and even the Toy Poodle tends to have excellent, practically innate, swimming abilities. Featured Toy Poodle Article. When I decided to get a poodle puppy, way back in the fall of , I looked long and hard for a situation where the puppies were well-socialized. I wanted a puppy that played well with other dogs and loved people. It never occurred to me to worry about the health of my puppy. Like most fifty-ish people, I was raised with a healthy happy dog and assumed they came that way. Like many children of that era, though, I was shocked to discover that breeders of the time culled their litters, culling being a euphemism for killing some of the puppies, presumably the ones with obvious genetic defects. Now, I wonder if that culling is what led in part to the current crisis of genetic health in purebred dogs; covering up evidence of recessive genes did not diminish their frequency in the population of purebred dogs. And I paid the price for that negligence for the almost nine years Elly was with me. She had several health problems common in poodles. She had hip dysplasia, which required both oral pain medication Rimadyl or Metacam and regular shots Adequan. She had inflammatory bowel disease IBD which required expensive diagnosis sedation and endoscopy and then a special diet for the rest of her life. She had food allergies more dietary restrictions. She had a hemangiosarcoma a common and often fatal cancer in dogs removed at age 4, which required more anesthesia and relatively minor surgery it was in the skin, thankfully. She had benign tumors removed from her eyelids at age 8. More anesthesia and more minor surgery. She may have had immune-mediated thrombocytopenia. It might have been something else entirely. The platelet count of a dog should be around , to , When I decided to get a second poodle, I knew that all that mattered to me was that I find a healthy poodle. I love standard poodles. I was lucky enough to meet Vikki Kauffman, a breeder who is as obsessed with poodle health as I am. She taught me how to read pedigrees; she explained to me about the uses of the Poodle Health Registry. She talked to me about the genetics of the most common diseases of poodles. Each win earns points; the number of points depends on the number of dogs defeated. Looking at the pedigree some more, you can scroll down to the bottom and click on the five-generation hip pedigree. In a perfect world, both parents and their parents and more will have Good or Excellent hips. Perhaps the day I picked up the puppy. Before I fell in love. Now, I need to caution that many many dogs with genetic diseases are not listed in the PHR. Only the owner can list a dog, and the disease has to be confirmed by a vet and the vet has to sign off on the listing form. If you see a dog with a genetic disease listed, you can be sure that dog has the disease. If you see a dog with no diseases listed… well, that dog might or might not be healthy. He sure had a lot of puppies. And you can, with a lot of back-and-forthing, track some genetic diseases through those puppies. One of his puppies had a puppy who had a puppy: my Moonstones Elinor. Go look at her PHR pedigree. Now, moving on to finding a healthy poodle puppy. Talk to the breeder. Ask why she chose to breed the two particular dogs that she did. Was she breeding for health? For size? For looks? For personality? Go check the pedigrees and the testing for yourself. You can go to the website of the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals OFA and check the results directly without waiting for the breeder to make you copies. No really great breeder would fail to test their dogs. Breeders need to love the breed, their dogs, the process—and be willing to give it all up at any time if there turns out to be a genetic problem with one of their dogs. Search for:.

Your Frenchie will be more than happy to travel where ever with you! However, that price can increase significantly, even into five figures, depending on the location and reputation of the breeder. Reproducing requires artificial insemination. These factors increase the investment for French bulldog breeders. The more investment a breeder makes into producing healthy high-quality dogs in good environments, the higher the price will be. The rarer the color is, such as blue, lilac or chocolate, the more you can expect to pay. Certain coat patterns, such as pied, merle or brindle, will also be more expensive. Female French bulldogs and those with blue eyes are pricier as well. Adopting through the French Bulldog Rescue Network is a more affordable way to acquire a new puppy or adult Frenchie. The French bulldog breed is exceptional with many rare characteristics that make them popular among dog owners. But there are also some challenges and things to watch out for. French Bulldog Size Fully grown French bulldogs average 12 inches tall. Adult females often weigh between 16 and 24 pounds, and males reach 20 to 24 pounds. Most French bulldogs will continue to gain weight until about 14 months old but stop gaining height between nine and 12 months. There are also mini Frenchies, also known as teacup French bulldogs. These are bred to be miniature versions of standard French bulldogs, weighing between five and 14 pounds. They typically shed in spring and fall, so you should increase coat brushing during that time to help reduce hair in your home. This can help you save on grooming costs. French Bulldog Appearance Along with breeds like English Bulldogs and pugs, French bulldogs are a brachycephalic breed, which means they have a shortened snout. Their faces are wrinkly and scrunched, giving them a distinct look, even as puppies. French Bulldog Colors French bulldogs come in many different coat colors. These include neutral colors — such as cream, gray, tan and black — as well as more rare colors like lilac, blue and chocolate. The rarer the color, the more expensive the price of a French bulldog will be. French Bulldog Temperament These pups are affectionate and playful, making them great companions. Training is recommended for French bulldogs since they can march to the beat of their own drum without guidance. Most Frenchies respond well to training, especially when treats are involved. Trainers believe French bulldogs understand commands but are moody and will respond as they feel like it. Frenchies are great family dogs, do well around other pets and prefer companionship. A companion will also allow you to leave them alone for longer periods of time without them getting frustrated. But, of course, another pet will come with its own costs. French Bulldog Activity Level Frenchies are not the best dog if you want a jogging companion. French Bulldog Life Expectancy French bulldogs have an average lifespan of 12 years if well taken care of. If they remain in great health, they can live as long as 15 years. Your veterinarian will periodically examine your Frenchie to ensure he or she is growing properly. Due to their flat faces and short necks, it can be difficult for French bulldogs to use standard feeding bowls. You can instead provide elevated dog food and water bowls to help your pet eat and drink more comfortably. Buying treats, toys or a comfortable dog bed can also help your Frenchie feel welcome in its new home. Less - The Frenchie shares many of the traits that made its bulldog ancestors so successful in the bull-baiting arena: low center of gravity, wide body, heavy bone, muscular build and large, square head. It has soft loose skin forming wrinkles about the head and shoulders. Unlike the bulldog, it has an alert, curious expression, which is aided by its bar ears. Also, unlike the bulldog, its movement is unrestrained and free, with reach and drive. It is a hardy, entertaining home companion and a solid lap dog. The French bulldog is a clown in a lap dog. It enjoys playing and entertaining its family, as well as cuddling and snoozing with its favorite person. It is amiable, sweet, companionable and willing to please. History The French Bulldog originated in 19th Century Nottingham, England, where lace makers decided to make a smaller, miniature, lap version of the English Bulldog that was referred to as a "toy" bulldog. In the s, when the Industrial Revolution drove the craftsmen to France, they took their dogs with them. The toy bulldogs became popular in France and were given the name the "French Bulldog. The Brits were not happy with the name "French" given to a dog that was originally from England, however the name "French Bulldog" stuck. Depending on where you live sorry California, it is expensive where you are! This could indicate the dog is coming from a puppy mill. You can read why you should avoid buying dogs from puppy mills here. But the popularity of the dog means there can be a lot of competition for the Frenchies that do need a home. There are a lot of factors that can influence price, and if you are looking for a show dog or a dog for breeding, you should expect to pay a lot more. Certain colors, which are desirable but genetically quite rare, can also push up the price. A brindle or black puppy will usually be at the lower end of the scale, but a breeder might ask a lot more for a platinum or blue fawn puppy. This is Micro, a perfect body specimen for a Frenchie. He also has a blue coat and orange eyes, which are quite rare in dogs. What About Mini Frenchies? Mini Frenchies, also known as Teacup Frenchies, are the same fantastic dog, but they are quite a bit smaller than usual. You can expect them to weigh just 5 to 14 pounds on average. Due to their smaller size, though, their bodies can be fragile, so it is important not to engage in rough play with them. These dogs are even harder to breed see below than standard French bulldogs, so they are also quite a bit more expensive. Why are they so expensive, then? One factor is high demand since they are a very desirable dog breed. But that is not the whole story, since Labs are also one of the most popular dog breeds. Health Problems One of the biggest factors is these dogs have a lot of health problems. Most of their health issues are related to their flat, brachycephalic faces similar to Pugs and American bulldogs , which makes them particularly prone to breathing issues and allergies. This unique facial structure can also affect the formation of their jaw, and the health of their eyes, and can even affect their healing from certain illnesses and injuries. On top of this, they can also be prone to hip dysplasia, kneecap shifts, and heat stress. Fortunately, breeders try to control these breed-specific issues. It is essential that responsible breeders do their best to control these conditions, which means DNA scanning, genetic testing, multiple trips to the vet, and paying extra close attention to the developing puppies. Of course, all of this comes with a cost. Breeding Problems The other big problem is that Frenchies are extremely hard to breed. As well as the operation itself is expensive, the mother and pups need extra care afterward. Plus, breeders need to give their mother dogs significantly longer to recuperate before they can think about breeding them again. On top of that, French bulldogs have small litters—usually just three puppies. It is very unusual for a Frenchie to have five or more puppies in a single litter. So, if you are looking for a French bulldog puppy, you can expect to be on a waiting list for several months before a puppy is available. As well as being expensive to buy, French bulldogs can be pretty costly to care for, again mostly because of their health problems. They will probably need regular trips to the vet, and insuring them can be expensive because they are known to have health issues. But what are some of the main costs that you can expect to incur when bringing home a new puppy? Supplies It can surprise pet parents just how many things you need to care for a new dog. For starters, your new pup will need a bed, toys, bowls, a collar, and a leash. A crate can also be a big expense if you choose to crate train. However, because crate training is not so common among French bulldogs, first-time owners might also want to consider some professional training classes. Food Food is one of the biggest neverending expenses for any dog. Puppy food is also a bit more expensive than adult food because of its high protein content. Ideally, your dog should be eating puppy food until they are about 9 months old. French bulldogs should be eating around 25 to 30 calories per pound of their body weight each day. You can read more about pet insurance for puppies here. They will usually only bark when there is something wrong, so it is worth paying attention when they do vocalize. This is one of the reasons why they make excellent apartment dogs. While French bulldogs are adorable, they are specifically bred for their appearance, and this has led to a lot of genetic issues that affect their health and can leave them in a lot of pain in their later years. Many people object to putting the health of an animal second to appearance and therefore object to buying French bulldogs and supporting the purebred breeding industry. In theory, if there was no demand for these dogs, this kind of exploitative breeding would stop. In practice, this is difficult to imagine, considering how popular the breed is. Can French bulldogs stay home alone? French bulldogs actually tolerate being left alone relatively well. However, all dogs need a lot of love and companionship, and no dog responds well to being left on their own for 10 hours a day five days a week. Dogs become members of the family, and if they are going to thrive, they need to be treated with that kind of attention. Are Frenchies hard to potty train? However, they are little dogs with small bladders. They also tend to gobble down their food, which means they can be prone to smelly gas expulsions. How much exercise does my Frenchie need? French bulldogs do well on just a 15 to minute vigorous walk each day. They are also quite playful, so they burn off energy just playing around as well. Are French bulldogs aggressive? Despite the reputation of bulldogs, Frenchies are not aggressive. They are friendly and get on well with people and other animals. However, all animals are a combination of nature and nurture, so they can learn aggressive habits if they are not properly cared for. Are Frenchies high maintenance? They can also be left alone without expecting too much trouble. On the other hand, their tendency towards breed-specific health issues does mean they need regular visits to the vet. They may need special medications for things like breathing issues, and in later life, they may need things like a special bed. The Verdict French bulldogs are excellent dogs. They are great little companions who will find it easy to live in your apartment with you, but they are also fun-loving and curious. While they are great dogs, they are also quite expensive. This is due to high demand and some pretty serious difficulties when it comes to breeding them. They have small litters, almost always delivered by c-section, and health screenings and vet visits are a big burden for breeders. If you want something special, such as a rare color, you should expect to pay a lot more. You can also expect them to be relatively expensive dogs to own because they do need regular and close contact with a good vet to maintain their health. At a glance, the French bulldog is: Highly intelligent and trainable Small, meaning it does well in fairly small apartments Expensive due to demand and how difficult they are to breed Prone to breed-specific health issues So, are they worth all this expense and trouble? We think they are. French bulldogs can be the ideal pet for first-time owners with limited space and time but a lot of love to give. Helps ease anxiety in their new home. Buying A Boxer Puppy? Finding Your Puppy -- Buying From the Breeder The conscientious breeder plans a breeding to reproduce the best characteristics of an outstanding sire or dam. His guide is the official AKC Standard of the breedthe written "blueprint" that helps keep the breed uniform for generations to come. You can find the breed standard, revised in , at the American Boxer Club website: www. The more common disappointments for pet purchasers come from commercial sources--especially pet shops that often buy puppies from the infamous "puppy mills" that take little notice of the quality or health they are producing. The pet store or dog broker will sell you a puppy with a breeder's name attached to the paperwork--but this puppy may easily have been born in a puppy mill. The reputable breeder, on the other hand, will not only be able to demonstrate the pedigree and registration papers, but will also show you either the sire or dam themselves, or pictures of the parent who may be owned elsewhere. Though the mere presence of "papers" does not guarantee good health, conformation, or temperament, you will most often find these attributes in the puppy who has been raised with loving care in the home or kennel of a conscientious hobby breeder. The serious breeder often strives to produce a potential "champion. Sometimes the distribution of white markings alone may make the difference between the so-called "pet" and show-potential puppy. The pet puppy will have benefited from the same proven bloodlines, nutrition, and medical care as its "champion" littermate. His breeder will have health tested the parents and done the best he can to insure good temperament, soundness, and longevity. Here is your best buy. Boxer magazines publish ads from breeders. The American Boxer Club web site www. Usually any time after weeks. Many states have regulations regarding minimum age. However, your individual circumstances must be considered. Do you have the time to spend with a very young puppy? Will someone be home to housebreak him? Would an exuberant 6-month old puppy overwhelm a tiny child? Or would he be better matched with a 6-year-old youngster? Remember too that the puppy under 3 months needs lots of time to rest. Don't forget that adult dogs, already trained, also make ideal pets. While much can be told at six to eight weeks about the puppy's eventual looks, if you are seeking a show prospect you might be better off waiting until the pup is six to eight months of age. At that time, be prepared to pay a higher price for all the additional time and effort that the breeder has spent raising the show potential Boxer. Male or Female? This choice is a matter of personal preference. Both males and females make admirable pets. Breeding is a serious committment of time, energy, and money, and not to be taken lightly. If breeding is not anticipated, it may be appropriate to spay or neuter your dog. This procedure is best done as your Boxer approaches adolescence. Please be aware that these surgeries should be discussed with your veterinarian as to safety of anesthesia and any long term effects other than sterilization. Spayed and neutered animals are not eligible to compete in the conformation ring but may be shown in performance events. Check this list! Tails should have been docked within a few days of birth. Optional removal of front dewclaws fifth toes is done at the same time. The Boxer has no rear dewclaws. Ear cropping is customary and appropriate but not required--it is a matter of personal preference. Uncropped ears are permitted under the breed standard. If cropped, this procedure is done under general anesthesia, usually between six and nine weeks of age. If the puppy is taken before cropping, the breeder usually makes arrangements. The breeder also advises regarding aftercare and taping if ears are not already standing. Sometimes this is a lengthy process. In the male, both testicles should be descended into the scrotum. They should be in place by two to three months of age. A dog with undescended testicles may still make a fine pet, though he would be ineligible to compete in the conformation show ring. Consult your veterinarian for advice. Avoid the unusually quiet, inactive puppy, or the one that might shy away from you. This might mean a fault in temperament or even ill health. Papers the Seller Should Furnish: a. A three or four generation pedigree signed by the seller. There should be no extra charge for this. The pedigree preferably gives the color of the sire and dam, and the AKC registration numbers of each. The registration from the AKC, which is an official document identifying your puppy's individual registration number, sex, birth date, sire and dam, and name of the breeder s. There are two ways to register puppies for the first time: 1 Limited Registration If the puppy is not to be bred, and is being purchased only as a companion pet, the breeder may check off the Limited Registration option. This does register the puppy with the AKC. However, it does not allow any registration of offspring from the mature dog. The breeder and only the breeder can cancel the limited registration should the puppy at maturity be considered of breeding quality. Records the Breeder Should Furnish: a. Date and type of vaccines given. Depending on the type of vaccination program started, your veterinarian will advise you on following through. Vaccination protocols are evolving even among the medical professionals. Date and agent used for worming, if done. Do not worm your puppy without consulting your veterinarian. Avoid store-bought preparations which can be dangerous. Diet your puppy has been receiving. It is well to maintain the regimen begun by the breeder, especially while the puppy is adjusting to his new home. If changes are to be made. When he is an adult it will be wise to maintain your Boxer on two smaller meals a day. Life Span Did You Know? The Boxer is one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States. It has been recognized by the AKC since .Although the Boxer dog breed originated in Germany, their ancient ancestry can be traced back to the Assyrian empire war dogs of BC. The modern Boxer breed we know and love today was originally developed in Germany in the late s. English-bred Bulldogs and the Bullenbesiier were crossed to create an energetic and agile hunting dog to chase wild game. The Boxer is a popular family companion and a versatile working dog. As a member of the Working Group, Boxers can be found competing in dog sports like agility, obedience, and herding. They also make great service and assistance dogs, as well as therapy dogs, and can be found working as search and rescue dogs, drug detection dogs, police dogs, and military dogs. The Boxer is a muscular and energetic dog that tends to have a happy, friendly disposition. They bond closely with their families and tend to get along well with children and other dogs. They can even do well with other pets despite their high prey drive if they are socialized and trained with them. As long as they are well-socialized, Boxers are generally upbeat, playful, and friendly. Although they have a natural instinct to protect their family from unwanted visitors, they do tend to warm up once introduced and are happy to make a new friend. They can be prone to barking a lot if you do not work on socialization and training your dog to stop barking early on. Boxers can be highly adaptable dogs. Although they have a lot of energy and are better suited to homes with yards where they can run, they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get the daily exercise, attention, and mental stimulation they need. As with any non-arctic dog breed, they are sensitive to very cold temperatures. Boxers are also a brachycephalic breed, which means they are even more sensitive to heat than other dogs. A Boxer is also one of the most affectionate dog breeds. Because they bond so closely with their families and get bored easily, they should not be left alone for long periods of time. Potential health conditions to be aware of in a Boxer include hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, thyroid issues , and heart conditions like aortic stenosis and cardiomyopathy. Good breeding practices make a big difference and reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking the breeder about the health and genetic history of the parents and about any health tests that have been done. Boxers are intelligent dogs that are eager to please their owners. Despite their energetic personality, they are one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners and are highly trainable dogs. They tend to excel at almost any task put before them! Because of their open, friendly nature and high energy, they have a tendency to jump up at people in excitement and playfulness. Since they grow into powerful dogs, you will want to make sure you train your dog not to jump up. Boxers have smooth and short coats that will shed a little year-round and require minimal grooming. A brush-down once or twice a week and the occasional bath as needed will keep their short coat healthy and looking great. Nail trims once or twice a month are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long. Checking ears weekly and carefully cleaning as needed can help prevent ear infections. Checking and wiping their facial wrinkles weekly or a few times a week if your dog is prone to getting into things can help keep their wrinkles clean and free of irritation. Dental diseases, like gum disease, are the most common health issues in older dogs because dental care is often overlooked; and, it can lead to other serious health issues. Brushing daily, plus cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. The Boxer is a high-energy dog breed that needs plenty of daily exercise to stay happy and healthy. Due to their high prey drive and urge to chase, they should only be let off-leash in secure areas. Boxers tend to get bored with repetition, are excellent problem solvers, and are naturally exuberant. A fully-grown Boxer usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs pounds. Boxers generally live years on average. In Germany, the Boxer was one of the first dog breeds chosen for police training. Featured Boxer Article.

Puppies When choosing a companion dog, it is normal for coat color to be a major consideration. But how about the German Shepherd coat? Do German Shepherd puppies change color? This article will discuss German Shepherd puppy coat coloring and how that coloring changes over time. Yes, German Shepherd puppies change color as they develop into adulthood. Even after they completely shed their puppy coat and grow their permanent adult coat, you can still expect to see some subtle changes in color. Instead, it sheds and changes continuously from birth to around 6 months. Once your German Shepherd turns 7 months old, the changes to their coat color will be more subtle. Nevertheless, it will continue to transform until they become adults at around 2 years old. Puppies are single-coated and their fur is generally soft and fluffy. Over time, they will shed that coat and develop a double-coat composed of dense fur and coarse outer hairs. Thick, downy fur helps puppies regulate their temperature within their first few months of life. However, their needs will change as they develop into adults. In the spring, German Shepherds blow their undercoats in preparation for the warm summer months. They will again shed heavily in the fall to develop a thicker and possibly darker winter coat. However, their appearance will still change—possibly multiple times—until well into adulthood, which starts at around 2 years old. However, you may still notice some subtle changes in thickness as the seasons turn. The color might also change slightly due to various factors like diet and sun exposure. However, experienced breeders can often tell whether a puppy will be long-coated before they turn a month old. It is also common for some unique markings to appear or disappear at this time. Nevertheless, the change in appearance might still be significant between 7 and 18 months old. Their shade could become darker or lighter, and their coat pattern can show some slight changes as well. Changes could still occur as a result of diet, environmental exposure, or health issues. No matter what color you prefer, your German Shepherd will benefit from proper nutrition and supplements for dog coat growth. Like humans, puppies grow fast. During this time, their coat goes through many changes. German Shepherds will frequently change color during the first couple of years of their life. It will also discuss how to determine what color your puppy may grow up to become. As puppies, German Shepherds are born with very soft and thin hair—wildly different from their usual thick, coarse hair as adult dogs. As German Shepherd puppies age, their soft, thin fur helps shield them from the elements and help regulate their body temperature. Typically, however, it will be thin and very soft. As your German Shepherd matures, its hair will begin to become short, thick, and coarse. Some German Shepherds, although rare, are long-haired. For adult German Shepherds, a soft, silky, too long outer coat is considered a fault to the American Kennel Club. For German Shepherd puppies, the color change is the most dramatic during the first eight weeks of life. By the time your puppy is eight weeks old, you will typically be able to determine or already see their actual color. As puppies, German Shepherds are either born black, white, or gray. It will be very gradual. For instance, you could start seeing some brown coming in around the legs, stomach, or face at first. It might look strange, but eventually, your German Shepherd will fully mature and become a beautiful color. Puppies can be born black, gray, or white. If you adopt a black German Shepherd puppy, it will generally stay black. However, a gray or white German shepherd can grow to be a variety of different colors. There are several standard colors, such as the tan and black already mentioned, but there are also a few rare ones. Black and Red: Black and red is another standard color scheme on German Shepherds. Bicolor: A Bicolor German shepherd will usually be almost entirely black, but the feet will be a tan color. A dominant gene produces gray German shepherds, and the American Kennel Club recognizes them. Liver: The color liver resembles a light brown. So, this colored German Shepherd will look similar to your average tan German Shepherd, just a little bit lighter. Like blue coats, liver coats are recessive and considered to be faulted by the American Kennel Club. Black: Black German Shepherds are typically entirely black and will resemble that of black labs if their hair is short, except for the stick-straight ears, of course. White: White German Shepherds are entirely white. The American Kennel Club recognizes them, but dog shows disqualify them because of their recessive genes. Sable: Sable is a unique coat color. For this German Shepherd, almost all of their hairs will have a black tip, and the rest is composed of different colors. The best way to determine the color your German shepherd will be is to look at its parents. Looking at the color of the parents should tell you what color your puppy will be. White German Shepherd puppies are the same. However, there are exceptions to this, and not all puppies are the same. Zinc deficiency, for instance, can cause many skin problems for your dog. This salmon oil is easy to give to your dog and offers clear instructions on the number of pumps to provide every day for the best benefits. Liver These are all approved show-ring standard coat colors in case you want to show your GSD. But is there any way to know for sure what coat color your GSD puppy will have when they grow up? First-time German Shepherd owners are often very surprised to learn that a large breed dog like the German Shepherd can continue growing for 24 to 36 months. An adult German Shepherd dog may weigh anywhere from 50 to 90 pounds and stand anywhere from 22 to 26 inches tall paw pad to shoulder. That is a lot of growth that needs to get done. For this reason, genetically speaking, it is advantageous for a large breed puppy to grow in spurts, spacing it out over time. Canine coat color experts explain that dogs have two basic pigments: eumelanin melanin and phaeomelanin. Eumelanin Eumelanin pigment always defaults to black. Eumelanin not only determines basic coat color but also controls for iris eye colors and nose colors. Phaeomelanin Phaeomelanin always defaults to red. Like eumelanin, the introduction of different genes can determine where on the red spectrum phaeomelanin expresses shows up. Unlike eumelanin, phaeomelanin only affects coat color and not eyes or nose. This is the chart many breeders use to design breeding programs to focus on certain coat colors. Each parent dog contributes a set of genes that control for color: coat color, eye iris color, and nose color as well as skin color. If you have a preference for a specific adult coat color, whether because you want to show your GSD or you are developing your breeding program, the best guarantee is to work closely with a knowledgeable breeder who understands coat color genetics. There is one exception to the coat color change to be aware of: often GSD puppies born with white coats will stay white. The coat is no exception here, as we mentioned in the introduction here. When your GSD puppy is born, all the puppies are typically but not always solid in color. The most common GSD puppy colors are black, grey, or — surprisingly — white. Kennels Von Lotta, a German Shepherd breeder, and kennel have posted this picture of a litter of newborn neonate German Shepherd puppies that were born black. Whelping to 2 weeks The puppies will start to show some differences in coat color and also coat length. By the day mark, breeders say it is often possible to tell if a GSD puppy is potentially going to grow up to have a long coat. As South Florida Shepherds kennel and breeder explains, the very same parent dogs can produce GSD puppies with very different adult coat colors. Because nearly all GSDs are displaying their permanent adult coloration by 18 to 24 months, continued changes or a sudden recurrence of color changes should always be investigated further. Now you know what to watch for as your little fluffy German Shepherd puppy starts to display their full and fabulous adult coat color and pattern.

We love our German Shepherds! They aren't just our pets, they are an important part of our family. Our dogs have calm temperaments, intelligence, loyalty, are healthy, and loving. Schutzhaus pronounced "Shoots-House" German Shepherds is a small breeding facility striving to maintain the old-fashioned lines of the German Shepherds. We are located in Southwest Missouri where we live on a small farm. Old-fashioned German Shepherds are taller, have straight backs, large bone structure, a longer life span, big heads, and generally are larger in weight than the German Shepherds of today's standards. Our dogs are tested! Since we are dedicated to a healthy legacy for our puppies, we test our dogs on various health tests seeking to produce the healthiest puppies. Regardless of these circumstances, the pretty German Shepherd variant with the bushy hair and the loyal, friendly nature is extremely popular and in great demand as a family and companion dog. While many of the breeds bear a close resemblance to long-haired German Shepherds, there is actually a large variation within the breed when it comes to physical appearance. The Old German Shepherd Dog is a classification of the German Shepherd breed in its own right and is certainly not to be confused with an elderly German Shepherd! The likelihood that you have encountered an authentic Old German Shepherd Dog is low. This breed of dog is incredibly rare nowadays, with some sources stating that they are in extinct a long time ago Old German Shepherds are described as loyal, alert, and nerves of steel. Their character corresponds to a large extent to that of a German shepherd dog. With their reliability and resilience, they are also suitable as watchdogs, guard dogs, service dogs, and herding dogs. However, the Old German Shepherds are considered to be friendlier and more balanced. They have a higher threshold of irritation and are not easily upset. This makes them popular as companions and family dogs. Why is the Old German Shepherd breed distinguished from the German Shepherd when it is actually only the long-haired variant of the German Shepherd? In order to understand this question, it is worth taking a look at the origins of the German Shepherd, whose ancestors already lived in Germany in the 7th century. The main task of these reliable and resilient dogs, which were long-haired, was originally to look after flocks of sheep. Due to their self-confident and alert nature, the intelligent old german shepherd makes to themselves a name as the best guard to the sheep and flocks and best friend to the families. What is the origin of the Old German Shepherd? The versatility of the old fashioned german shepherd and their excellent suitability as a service dog also inspired the Prussian riding master Max von Stephanitz, who is now considered the founder of the GSD. In Stephanitz started breeding working dogs. Long-haired puppies always appeared in the litter of all known and leading lines if a parent animal had the gene responsible for it, but according to the SV, they should not be used as breeding animals. The turning point did not come until , when the Association for German Shepherd Dogs, with the approval of the FCI, re-approved the long-stick hair as a variant. Despite the new entry, some breeders outside the SV still stick to the term of the old German shepherd dog breed today. He shares with him the typically upright standing ears, the elongated, narrow snout, the attentive and watchful look, and the bushy, hanging tail. The different color shades of black-brown, black or gray wolf are also identical, as are the medium to a large height at the withers between 24 to 30 inches for males and 20 to 26 inches for females. Obviously, the old fashioned german shepherd dog only differs from the normal German Shepherd by its much longer hair. The soft and not tight-fitting hair on the legs, ears, and tail is particularly bushy, where it forms long Signs. Due to the long topcoat and the dense, very soft undercoat, they generally look a bit stronger than its close relative of the classic German Shepherd. The actual weight is comparable to 28 to 32 kg for females and 33 to 40 kg for males. Its reliability, safe instincts and high resilience make it just as suitable for use as a guard, guard and service dog as its famous brother. At the same time, he has a friendly and balanced character, which makes him extremely popular as a companion and family dog. The old german sheepdog shows its best side to children in particular. His good-natured manner and his alert nature make him a loving playmate and reliable protector. Compared to the German Shepherd Dog, the Old German Shepherd Dogs are generally considered to be somewhat calmer with an even higher stimulus threshold. Balanced character and spirited athlete Nevertheless, shepherds have pronounced instinctive behaviour. Even if they are only slightly irritable and only intervene if the situation actually requires it, small children should not be left alone with them unsupervised — which incidentally applies to almost all larger dogs. In order for its good-natured, balanced character and its reliable and attentive nature to develop fully, this dog needs early socialization, consistent training as well as sufficient exercise and employment. If you are interested in the Old German Shepherd Dog as a family dog, you should bring along experience and know-how in the field of dog training, as well as a lot of fun in the movement, because the dogs are enthusiastic athletes. Joint hikes, bike tours and regular participation in dog sports are ideal for the four-legged athlete and his family. Here were my own ideas of how a German Shepherd should look. Of course, there were also long hair and long stick hair puppies in addition to the stick hair variants. In the SV decided that the long-haired type should no longer be allowed to breed. Lovers, therefore, founded their own breeding club in order to maintain the long-haired or long-haired type through their own breeding. A long haired german shepherd and German shepherd can also have short-haired parents. In return, an old fashioned german shepherd dog has several generations of long-haired ancestors. Efforts were even made to improve the health and physique of the old Germans by crossing the straight east line former GDR. In addition to the long fur and slightly different body type, the old style german shepherd also differs in essence from its stick-haired relatives. Old Germans dog is generally calmer and not as spirited as the SV dogs. Nevertheless, they like to work and willingly, but outside the dog place they are frugal and patient companions and family dogs. They differ not only in terms of their appearance but also in terms of their nature. They are also considered to be calm, balanced, and easy to handle — if you are looking for an adaptable family dog, you are best advised with a dog from this line. If you plan to use your dogs as service and protective dogs, you should rather look at a puppy draw from performance breeding. The dogs, which are usually somewhat lighter, have a pronounced guard, protection, and herding behaviour, are very resilient, extremely self-confident, and willing to work. They only belong in the hands of experienced dog handlers who socialize them with a lot of expertise and experience and train them according to their location, for example with the police, customs, or military. Even if you buy a puppy from a so-called beauty breed, it will still bring a lot of activity and willingness to learn. Only when you are aware of this and can ensure that you and your family meet the keeping requirements should you start looking for a suitable breeder. Which breedr is right for me? Since most breeders specialize in either performance or beauty breeding and accordingly promote different characteristics in your breeding animals, you should first be clear about the purpose for which you want to buy the German Shepherd dog. In advance, inquire exactly whether the breeder is breeding or pure breeding and choose the breeding place that best suits your ideas and requirements. If you are looking for an old German Shepherd dog breed, you will usually come across breeders who breed independently of the breed association for German Shepherd and the FCI. Pay close attention to the seriousness of the breeder. The prerequisite for this is that you buy your puppy from a reputable breeder who invests a lot of time and money in the health of his dogs and willingly gives you information. It goes without saying that an all-around healthy and controlled puppy is not available at a bargain price. A good breeder should not only be a seller, but also an expert and contact knowledgeable person in all questions regarding husbandry, upbringing, nutrition, and care. To ensure that you have found the right breeder, you should pay attention to the following points: The breeder is a member of a dog club and network with other old german sheepdog and German Shepherd breeders. He has a wide knowledge and a lot of experience with the breed. The breeding animals were thoroughly examined before they were used especially for joint problems. The puppies have a pedigree and a pedigree. Puppies are only given between the 8th and 10th week of life. The breeder had the first health examinations and necessary initial vaccinations carried out before delivery. The breeder will ask you about your circumstances in order to find out whether you are the owner of an old fashioned german shepherd dog. You should better refrain from breeders who want to get rid of their puppies as soon as possible and who are not interested in their further well-being. The breeder demands a reasonable price for gsd puppy currently this is between and 1, euros. A medium to large sized athletically-built breed, dogs will measure between 26 and 32 inches, while weighing anything between 22 and 40kg. Their coat colour can be black, brown, tan or grey, and often consists of more than one colour. The length and type of the coat varies between individuals, though tends to be long. The German Shepherd has a double coat, which is comprised of a thick undercoat and a dense, slightly wavy, or straight outer coat. Its hair, usually tan and black, or red and black in color, is medium in length and is shed all year round. Other rarer color variations include all-Black, all-White, liver, and blue. This gives the dog strength, agility, elasticity, and long, elegant strides. Old German shepherds dog breed, like German shepherds, tend to have joint problems. These are usually hereditary and are also exacerbated by excessive stress and poor nutrition in the growth phase. Avoid eating too high in energy and fat in the first few months. As a rule, your breeder will give you an exact feeding recommendation that you should stick to. We recommend special puppy food that is optimally tailored to the needs of your young old shepherd dog. You should also keep these needs in mind when feeding your adult dog. Healthy food, therefore, takes into account the size, weight, age, state of health, and level of activity of the respective dog. A high proportion of grain, however, should be avoided due to the increased risk of allergies. These dogs have all the traits that you know and love from a modern GSD, with a slightly more easy-going temperament and a longer, luxurious coat. Another important difference is the need for exercise. German Shepherds are active and energetic as it is, and Old German Shepherd Dogs are all the more so. These dogs have been bred and developed for hundreds of years for performance, not appearance, so they need a ton of regular exercise to keep them happy. Typically, when you see those ads or people who post a photo of their "Old Fashioned" German Shepherd, you see a very large dog with a plush or long coat. They're also advertised to have "Straight Backs" and not the sloping back that is "the cause of hip dysplasia. The short answer is…No. German Shepherd Dogs are not large dogs but a medium-large breed. A lb "Old Fashioned" dog will collapse after an hour of working sheep. If anything, a 90lb German Shepherd is about the biggest true herding dog you'll find. Fat and muscle make heat and lactic acid during exercise. Lactic acid is what causes the burning sensation in your muscles when you exercise or walk to the opposite side of the mall. They're also almost always plush or long-coated. Long coated dogs with an undercoat were recently accepted into the FCI as not being a fault. I think long-coated dogs are handsome, but I'm very sad that it's no longer a fault. Why may you ask? Great savings and a cool hairdo are unbeatable. But jokes aside, how can something that was a fault until recently be old-fashioned? And don't forget, these are big, bulky-built dogs.Imagine that dog herding sheep all day in the summer like old-fashioned working people needed their old-fashioned working dog to do. They simply wouldn't be able to. A lot of people confuse slope with straight. A ruler is straight. If you tilt a ruler, it's still straight, it's just slightly sloped now. That's what a German Shepherd Dog's back is supposed to be. Straight and slightly sloping. Do some breeders, breed clubs and lines overdo the "slight" in slightly sloping? But does slope affect hips? No, it doesn't. Do you know what does affect hips? Buying puppies from breeders who don't have passing hip scores on both parents of your puppy, which a lot of "Old Fashioned" German Shepherd breeders do not because they think the straight back is keeping them safe. These are Old Fashioned German Shepherd dogs; they aren't hyper like these new dogs they're breeding to compete in Schutzhund. That isn't how they're supposed to be, all amped up and needing a lot of training. They're supposed to be family dogs. German Shepherds were created with one goal in mind; to be the best, most versatile working dogs the planet had ever seen. They were smart, loyal, motivated, and loving, and that made them great family dogs. That's the job of dogs in the Toy and Non-Sporting group. German Shepherd Dogs are classified in the working or herding group in every registry. Their job is to work, and working dogs must have drive, and dogs with drive require training or they'll drive you absolutely nuts. You want a dog who looks like a German Shepherd Dog but behaves like a stuffed animal or lawn ornament. The erect ears aren't what make German Shepherds who they are, it's the drive that does. If you step up to the challenge and harness that drive, you will have a dog that will do anything for you. How many dogs besides a well-bred German Shepherd will do that for you? Forget dogs, how many people would do that for you? Real Old Fashioned German Shepherds had drive and a lot of it. Lastly, size, were Old Fashioned German Shepherds big, lb dogs? Well, we talked about that a bit earlier, so you know the answer is no. But how big were they? Much to everyone's disappointment, they were pretty small. Much smaller than today's dogs. Slighter build and shorter, much thinner. Why did I say, "much to everyone's disappointment," you ask? Well, because even the founder of the breed, Max von Stephanitz wanted them to be just a little bigger! The average male back then was anywhere from lbs, and the average female was in the high 40lblb range. So, while real old-fashioned GSDs were pretty small, the founder of the breed did want bigger dogs. No, but he did want females in the lb range and males in the lb range. Why did he want bigger dogs that would make them a little less suitable for running all day and herding sheep? I think the answer lies in the fact that herding in the early s was the way of the past. Horses became cars, German Shepherds were being swapped out for fences, and Newspapers for radios. He could probably sense that a shift from German Shepherds being mostly herding dogs, to them being police and military dogs was coming. He had great foresight because not many of us have 40 acres of pasture and a flock of sheep. But if you do, post pictures in the comments because that's pretty awesome! If you have a large, long-haired, laid-back dog, that's great! Especially if you're happy and they're happy. But are they old-fashioned? Not at all. They're the newest member of the family, in fact. My name is Mitzi Michelle Brooks. I have had dogs all my life and German Shepherds most of that time. I have tried different breeds, but always come back to what I know and love. The German Shepherd Dog is the right fit for me. I breed large, old-fashioned, straight-backed, German Shepherds with a special focus on health and temperament. I am a very small breeder, all my dogs live with me, in the house. They are first, and foremost, my beloved pets. In my litters, I concentrate on the things that matter most to me: Health and Temperament. My dogs are all larger than the breed standard but with no compromise to their health. All my dogs are medium to low energy, making them easy to train and ideally suited for families. I do not breed: dogs that are hyper, dogs that show any signs of aggression, working dogs, high drive dogs, or dogs with excessive angulation. Puppies are born and raised in my home! That means your puppy goes home with you already socialized with other dogs, with cats, and familiar with all the sights and sounds of a normal home. All puppies are also current on vaccinations and on a set deworming schedule. The puppies bred here are sold as companions and pets. Just as working dogs are bred to work, my puppies are bred to live in and be a part of a family. With their low to low-medium drive, my pups are very easy for their new parents to train and still possess that famous German Shepherd instinct to protect their home and their family. These soft temperaments mean that my dogs are happy to go out and play, but just as happy to come in, lay at your feet, and interact with their family.

The only concern that we have is that our dog came with Kennel Cough. An unnecessary expense that our breeder, Morgan, should have taken care of before we received our puppy. We have taken him to the vet to start our puppy on antibiotics. Tibbitts I love my bulldog and his sister! J Tapia a year ago My guy is 8 and in perfect shape! Just updating this! My guy is gonna be ten in April. His father was Searg and his mother was Sweetvine. Morgan was great to work with. She was patient and thorough with all of our questions when we first got him. My recommendation to any bulldog owner is to be sure to have a vet who truly knows and loves the breed. Bulldogs are known to have more health issues than some other breeds, but they can certainly live long healthy lives, especially if they have a healthy start to their life. Morgan will be honest and open to discuss any health concerns you may have, as well as give vet recommendations or general info. I love my dog and we are forever grateful to Morgan for doing all the work she does for this amazing breed. Jasmin Portillo 2 years ago I will definitely recommend sugarplum to whoever is looking to purchase a bulldog. You can tell Morgan is a professional and takes really good care the pups while in her care. We will dependently purchase another bulldog from her in the near future. Karl Beckett 2 years ago I purchased my English bulldog in August .The entire process of purchasing her as well as picking her up at the time was incredibly simple. All the animals there seemed to be very happy, well cared for, and healthy. I reached out at the end of March asking for info about her new process and she was extremely responsive. I also told her I was looking for a certain head shape and she was super willing and responsive about the sires. I emailed twice and called twice over the span of 2 months with no response. I was not pushy or unkind, In fact I led each communication with grace acknowledging that she must be busy, and still no response. This made me think about why she might be concealing information about her female bulldogs. I began to feel very uncomfortable about this business and putting a deposit down on a breed that is known for genetic health issues without any information on one of the parents. I know Morgan reads these reviews, so perhaps she will provide an explanation about the female bulldogs she breeds on here, as I was not able to receive an answer myself. Rameen Maleki I had my puppy Rocky there twice and they have been great. Katherine Fitch Our little bully is great! She is the joy of our life. I got her back in from Morgan and her helper, I'm forgetting his name, and they were both great. I had made an appointment to come check out the puppies and they let me sit with them for a couple hours before making a decision so I didn't feel rushed and definitely made the right choice. She is about 42 pounds and looks much smaller than most other bullies. Ming did have a lot of health problems her first year but I was prepared for this since everything I read on bulldogs said this was a high probability. It was life changing for Ming Ming who suffered from pneumonia a few times in her first year. She had to go to the ER a twice and a lot of the vets didn't know how to stop this from happening until I found out about that surgery. John Strutt 2 years ago I have to say, sugarplum gets a bad rep. I bought Maya Aggie about two years ago. She is the most energetic loving bulldog I could have asked for. She has the sweetest temperament and is a wonderful addition to the family. Great around kids and other dogs. Already recommended this place to others. Jean Bricker 3. Work on your self and treat your dogs better! Henry Lachowicz 2 years ago Definitely a puppy mill. She has some farm in Missouri and you never get to see the parents. Our bully had nothing but temperament issues, and its sad. We were accidentally referred here and its the biggest mistake we ever made. Deborah Shomaker 2 years ago I purchased a blue and white male bulldog 3 weeks ago. He is doing great. He is a wonderful addition to our family. He is very healthy. Everything went smoothly from purchase to delivery. This is an unethical business that does not represent itself in a straightforward way that plays fast and loose with their dogs' wellbeing. In we were naive and wide-eyed optimists and all too desperate to find a bulldog to join our family. We didn't ask hard questions and we came to regret it. Looking back, there were so many things that should have raised red flags. She told us that she was a breeder, and yet when we arrived she shifted the story to say that she was in the process of setting up as a breeder, and converting her space. On the phone she never made it clear that the puppies she had were from out of state, we came to find out ours was from Missouri, bred by a woman whose name we found had multiple liens against her for bad business practices. If you are wondering why I'm writing this review after so many years it's because I have had mixed feelings. Winston the bulldog is a constant joy, and I regret nothing even though he needed multiple surgeries in the months after we bought him because of a congenital hernia that every vet we saw said demonstrated that the breeder had been irresponsible. Even after thousands of dollars in vet bills, I do not regret choosing Winston, but what I regret and wish I could change is ever having supported this unethical business. Cindy Short 2 years ago Have had our baby for almost a year and the most amazing EB ever. Very responsive, white glove delivery, and exactly as promised. He is a "smaller" of the breed which we love. We knew about the midwest birthing facility and even had someone in the 'biz' check them out. Would highly recommend them for sure. Especially if you want a medium to smaller EB. She is full of energy, personality, and fun! She is our first English Bulldog but definitely won't be the last as long as Morgan is the breeder. Luna has only needed her well visits to the vet and spaying. Do not hesitate to work with Morgan and Sugarplum Bulldogs to find a wonderful pup! Though I had never seen the breeding facilities myself and cannot speak on the quality of such, I can tell you that this is one extremely healthy, happy bulldog! Having been home two weeks now he has received an exceptional bill of health after a new puppy inspection with my veterinarian that I have been going to for over a decade, is fully crate trained, and getting consistently better potty training. That being said, I wanted to write this review in-depth because this is the first dog I have ever bought from a breeder and I had major apprehension doing so without visiting the facilities and whatnot first, but my experience has been very good start to end and I based on such I would highly recommend Sugarplum Bulldog thanks to the quality of the little guy who's now a part of my family. I can't speak for others' experiences, but I hope this and the attached images help to clear up some of the posts that made me initially question Sugarplum Bulldogs, as I am an actual owner of one and am speaking only on my experiences as such. Hope this helps! Michelle Dabney 2 years ago I love Sugarplum Bulldogs! Morgan has been wonderful - so knowledgeable and responsive! We are fortunate to have 2 babies from Sugarplum. We got our first four years ago, and our second just last week. Although our newer addition was a little sick when she arrived, Morgan was very responsive and took care of everything. Years ago, when we were looking for our first bulldog, I unknowingly talked to a couple of sellers who turned out to be selling on behalf of what I assume were puppy mills. They were high pressure selling and not very knowledgeable about the puppies except for the basics. Thankfully we found Sugarplum Bulldogs! We even already used the same vet. So when we brought our puppy in for his first vet check-up, they immediately asked if he is a Sugarplum because they know her dogs! When we were ready to get a 2nd one, there was no question we would contact Morgan! I know it is scary to get a pet sight unseen, but I would encourage anyone to talk to Morgan. She knows so much about her dogs and the breed — she is so helpful! And if there are any issues, my experience has been that she is very honest and will make it right. We could not be happier with our bulldogs pictured here with our rescue pet puggle , and we are so happy to work with Morgan and Sugarplum Bulldogs!!! Mirna C 2 years ago Morgan answered all my questions with kindness and professionalism every time I reached out to her. I was able to reach her via phone and email. She was very patient with all my questions as this was my first time purchasing a bulldog. She even offered to answer my questions if I didn't purchase a pet from her. Sugar Plum works with a puppy mill in Missouri where the animal welfare laws are not strict. The dogs are then transported to VA to a nice, clean farm. You don't see the dogs that are bread and what is going on behind the scenes. We bought a puppy that had a heart murmur. We brought the puppy back and were given another puppy. She had 4 surgeries to get her to be okay before her first birthday. Our sweet baby passed away two weeks ago at the young age of four. We kept in touch with the lady who adopted her brother. He died a few weeks ago from cancer. Our friends, who we mistakenly referred to Sugar Plum, have two dogs from there. One has had two CCL repairs and the other, also 4-years-old, was just diagnosed with stage 3 cancer. Prognosis is not good. Bullies should not require surgery after surgery to make them okay and only live to be 4. Please, don't put yourself through the heartache we are going through. I made the mistake and purchased a puppy and he died 3 weeks after he was delivered to our home. His name was Bodhi and we loved him very much. .My family and I were devastated after loosing our puppy Bodhi. The night Bodhi died he was playing with his toys in the kitchen and during this time he was gasping for air. The doctors sedated him and put him on a ventilator. X ray showed no object blocking his air way. I am not a animal doctor but I believe my puppy was sickly from the day he was delivered to our home, not to mention Morgan owner of Sugerplum had my puppy delivered to us at 7 weeks old which is a direct violation of the breeding laws. I called Morgan the night my puppy died and told her what happen. Morgan did not care and she had no sympathy whatsoever. Way to go Morgan hope your happy. Who would ever think your puppy would die after 3 weeks of having him. .To everyone do not buy a puppy from Sugerplum find a local breeder who loves there animals and are not in it for the money. RiP Bodhi broken hearted Ray Teresa Chestnut 2 years ago Purchased a puppy less than six months ago for a friend recovering from cancer! She was at the vet at least once a week! Last night she had to be put down 5 months old! Is 5 months the life expectancy? Just long enough to fall totally in Love! Zoeh Byrd 2 years ago i have 2 wonderful puppies from sugarplum named max and molly! Mikey Miller 3 years ago Purchased a puppy from Sugar Plum a while back and he died within the first 2 weeks. We spent over 7 grand bringing him to different vets trying to keep him alive. When we contacted the breeder she tried to blame us for not taking proper care of the puppy. All of the vets that we brought him to said there was nothing more we could have done as owners to keep him alive. I was not planning on writing a review but I really do not want people to go though what my family went through. Please avoid this place. Ashley Wetherell 3 years ago This is a puppymill! I absolutely love my sweet fur baby, but I would never buy from them again nor reccomend them. Call Morgan at for specific pup identification if you are leaning towards placing an early deposit. Please check back, we update our website daily! Please see our Deposit Page and our Transportation Page for information on getting your puppy. We love the English bulldog temperament, physique and expression, I just personally like it to be about lbs. We find the smaller sizes are more buoyant and playful and, though still very heat sensitive, are better able to cope with life in general. Downsizing an AKC breed takes time. Our girls all come from long lines of lb. We not trying for 20 pounders…our goal is to have healthy, beautiful babies that consistently mature at lbs. If you see a puppy that tugs on your heartstrings please call, or go to our deposit page for more information. In the last few years it has become clear that most people would prefer their puppy to be transported using our White Glove transport or Nanny Flight transport. Today, we have requests for our Puppies from all over the country. Because of this, the majority those requesting a Sugarplum Bulldog Puppy have also requested transport to their area of the country; those in Florida, for example, cannot easily make the drive to RI. As such, the majority of our Puppies have shifted to a transport model; this gets them closer to their new forever home. Because of this, we have come to the decision, that for the well being of our Puppies and for the benefit of our new Sugarplum Bulldog owners, we have developed a transport model for our pups using our Puppy-Mobile with direct transport to the pups new Forever Home! Our Mid-Western breeding home is co-owned by Sugarplum Bulldogs, and our partner. I realize that not having a chance to play with the Pups is disappointing to some, but please understand that our team are dedicated to the highest level of care for our little Pups. We truly feel that this new model is in the best interested of our Puppies and their new homes. Please feel free to ask me any questions…. However, they highlight that the gait of the English Bulldog is somewhat peculiar — shuffling with a sideways motion — and the coat is flat, straight, and short with a fine texture. Moreover, the skin is soft and loose, particularly in the neck, head, and around the shoulders. If you keep these characteristics in mind, it would be effortless to spot carelessly and unethically bred English Bulldog puppies. These puppies usually have health and temperament issues as well. So do yourself a favor and never purchase low-quality and low-priced English Bulldog puppies from backyard breeders or unauthenticated pet stores. Always choose Bulldog breeders that strive to improve the breed standard. Here are a few aspects to focus on when looking for a reputable breeder: Transparency A clean and well-maintained facility Mostly positive online and in-person reviews Health warranties, preferably covering genetic and hereditary diseases Vaccinations and essential health testing Updated and informative websites Substantial experience in breeding English Bulldogs Safe and responsible shipping More Information About English Bulldog Puppies in the US Agile, sturdy, and confident English Bulldog puppies are mild-tempered and become quickly attached to their families and loved ones. You cannot mistake an English Bulldog puppy for any other breed! The English Bulldog comes in various colors and patterns but is mostly smooth and glossy. Bulldogs like taking brisk walks and require regular exercise coupled with a specific diet to stay fit and healthy. However, one of the best things about them is their low endurance and zero requirements for huge yard space. When they feel particularly relaxed, English Bulldogs enjoy lounging in an air-conditioned room. Also, their short snout can lead to labored breathing in hot weather, so remember to keep them hydrated and avoid extensive outdoor activity. English Bulldogs sometimes get mistaken for pitbulls. However, they are not pitbulls and do not share the same temperament. English Bulldogs are not at all aggressive. Are English Bulldogs easy to train? English Bulldogs work a little differently than other dogs. They are not easy to train, but they will respond to love and affection. Do English Bulldogs like to be held? English Bulldogs are known for their very affectionate nature. They love to be held and cuddled often! Now all you have to do is pick a breeder, and you can begin your journey of finding your perfect lifelong canine companion! Remember: before signing up for adoption, ask the breeder any questions or doubts about the Bulldog breed or the adoption process.
