Temperament: Playful, loving and independent. Chihuahua Poodle Mix Appearance A Chihuahua Poodle mix is a small, lightweight dog that you can carry around with you. Those who inherit more Chihuahua will be long and slender. Whereas those with more Poodle in them with be shorter and chunkier. Their eyes can be light or dark and their noses are usually brown or black. They walk and run with a real spring in their step. Height and Weight Males stand between inches tall and weigh between pounds. Females stand between inches and weigh between pounds. So as you can guess this mix is no different. Black, white, grey, and many shades of brown are all possible fur colors. They may be all one color, or a mix of two or three different ones. Their fur is medium length and can be styled to your fancy. While letting your pup hitch a ride in your bag can be fun, it is important that even the tiniest dogs get time on their feet to walk. The Chihuahua originated in Mexico, while the Poodle is a European breed. The mix is thought to have begun in the United States. Chihuahua Poodle mixes are safer for owners with dog allergies due to their minimal shedding. The Poodle is one of the smartest dogs there is and all Poodle mixes are renowned for this intelligence. They makes cute and cuddly lap dogs and love to be carried or held. As it is very easy to spoil them rotten they can develop a bossy streak. They will spend their day following you around right at your heels. Even as they grow up they never lose the curiosity and playful behavior of puppyhood. Every day is a big adventure for this lovable little pooch. They are surprisingly independent for a toy breed and do not mind spending time alone. These playful pups will keep themselves and their owners amused with all kinds of tricks. Just about anything will keep them entertained. Their energy comes in quick bursts and they enjoy short play sessions throughout the day. Both parent breeds are known for being very chatty dogs so you will likely hear a lot of yapping from your mix. Reducing excessive barking whilst they are a puppy should be a priority. These dogs will eagerly socialize with their family but can be shy and anxious around strangers. This anxiety will lead to much more barking and yapping. Keeping your pup close by your side while you take them out to socialize will help them feel much more comfortable. They tend to be very suspicious of other pets but will get along with other toy dogs with similar personalities. Never keep one with a large dog or an especially pushy breed. Young children are often too noisy and rambunctious for these delicate dogs to handle. These delicate pooches can snap or bite if handled roughly. Owners should be able to keep up with its bursts of wild energy throughout the day. These dogs are not at all difficult to care for and are in fact easier than other toy breeds. Housetraining and finding the right diet are the biggest challenges of the breed. Exercise Requirements A Chihuahua mixed with Poodle will keep its youthful energy throughout their life. When they want to walk or play they will bark and tear around the house until you take them out. They will need short walks a day — each walk should be about 10 minutes each. Your dog should be on leash while walking. When they are tired they will wait patiently for you to pick them up. For the rest of the day you should let them burn their energy as necessary. You can teach them how to jump small hurdles and catch a ball. Your dog will be happy playing indoors or out, so long as they have enough space. Giving them their own play room in your house is a good idea. Number of Walks Per Day: .Total Exercise Needed Per Day: 45 minutes. Feeding and Diet Finding a nutritious diet to a small dog can be very difficult. It is easy to give them too much or too little dog food. These formulas are packed with all of the nutrients your little pup needs to fuel their day. Split one cup of kibble a day into two half cup meals. A good small breed formula will be packed with protein and have very little carbs and fats. It should have a high vitamin content and no extra fillers or additives. This leads to weepy or crusty eyes, redness and irritation. Dogs that suffer from this chronically will need their tear ducts flushed every few months. With little planning ahead you could get reimbursed for every vet bill from now on! It loves to be on the move and play all day. Chipoos are social butterflies and thrive for attention. They are kind, loyal, loving, friendly and outgoing, so trips to the dog park will do him wonders. He does also love his family and will enjoy sitting on your lap and snuggling. Keeping them busy will prevent mischievous behavior caused by boredom! Who is the Choodle Best Suited For? A Chipoo is an indoor dog, so consider this before bringing one into your home. They do well in apartments, small homes, and condos. They get along with other dogs and are good with children. The Poodle Chihuahua mix is a great companion dog and loves to be part of a family environment. Does the Chipoo Require Exercise? Yes, the Poochi thrives on physical activity, but a lot of exercises is NOT required. Just be careful not to let the little guy overexert himself. Also, provide him with plenty of water to keep him hydrated. Potty Training the Choodle Small dogs have smaller bladders. House training them can be a challenge. The number one rule is to start early! Brushing at least one to three times a week will remove dander and loose hair. It also keeps the coat smooth and tangle-free. This breed can also inherit overactive tear glands, which may cause tears to dry under its eyes and turns the fur a dark color. So use a wet cloth or a very fine and blunt comb, as needed, to keep this issue under control. Dental health is also important, so brush their teeth times a week. Keep a close eye on the nails. Training and Socialization Tips Intelligent dogs like the Chipoo are usually easy to train. Keep things positive and offer lots of praise. For their safety, be sure to leash train them and socialize them early! A properly trained Poochi can go anywhere with its family. Once they develop their strong personality and independence, they can become stubborn. Handle this right away in a firm way and with patience. Your Chi-poo will likely alert you of intruders by barking. Low blood sugar, also known as hypoglycemia, can occur in this breed. To prevent this, feed several small meals throughout the day. Chihuahuas have soft teeth, which can lead to dental diseases. Keep an eye out for: Cardiovascular disease. Different breed organizations have recognized it by various names. A significant trait that the Chi-Poo may have partially inherited from the Chihuahua is their habit of bonding intimately with a particular person of the house, following him wherever he goes. These amicable dogs are not a good option for children below ten years of age as the latter may harm or rashly handle them. They can thrive well indoors or even in apartments if they have sufficient space to run around freely. This Chihuahua-Poodle mix gets along well with other dogs and pets when brought up with then since their puppy days. They are however not too comfortable with strangers. Care Exercise These active, playful dogs require a lot of physical activities to be healthy and happy. Taking them out for a walk daily under moderate temperature is a good option. In fact when outdoors if the temperature falls below 50 degrees, it is safe to take a coat or sweater for them. They get bored and destructive when left alone for too long. Therefore, give them adequate mental exercise by introducing a lot of interesting toys to them. Grooming Though they shed less, their coats should be groomed at frequent intervals in a week on the basis of the length by using a brush with soft bristles. Bathe them once or twice when needed. It is best to brush your dog before bathing it as this will help in removing loose hairs, also preventing it from getting matted after being wet. In fact, if your pet Chi-Poo has a coat similar to Poodle then brushing at regular intervals as well as clipping is essential. Make sure to brush their teeth two to three times in a week to prevent any dental infections. Because of their overactive tear glands similar to Poodles, it is required to remove the dried tears by cleaning the region around their eyes using a fine tooth comb devoid of any sharp edges. Health Problems They may suffer from diseases like luxating patella, tracheal collapse, hydrocephalus building up of fluid in the cavities of the brain , dilated cardiomyopathy, glaucoma, and chronic valvular heart disease. They also have the problem of dry skin, being incapable of absorbing anything through their skin. Some of them may possess an inverted eyelid that may heal on its own or in the extreme case require surgery. This breed is also prone to hypoglycemia that can turn fatal if not treated properly. Training Being intelligent just like the Poodle they will respond well to training when handled by a tactful trainer who will not be harsh on them but handle their stubbornness in a firm and patient way. Loving to amuse their owners with impressive tricks, they will be adept at it when groomed with an efficient hand. The techniques of rewarding and praising will encourage them to respond in a positive way. Proper socialization training is also required to be given to the puppies to help them get over certain behavioral problems like barking, showing possessiveness regarding their toys or belongings or getting destructive. Moreover, they should be trained to get over their habit of being attached to a particular individual of the family as his absence may trigger intense separation anxiety in them. They are to be leash trained for their safety. Feeding They should be given the diet of small or toy dogs probably wet food as most of them may face difficulties in digesting the contents of the commonly used dog foods. This breed may be picky while eating, thus it can take time to feed them. Give your pet about three fourth to one and a half cup dry dog food. Feeding your chipoo healthy food many times in a day will reduce the risk of hyperglycemia. Interesting Facts They act as perfect alarm dogs, warning their family at the very sight of an unfamiliar person or any uncommon sound by barking. Poodle x Corgi — Corgipoo Poodle x Yorkshire Terrier — Yorkipoo The Chihuahua Poodle mix is not as popular as some of the other Doodle-dogs, but it will still make a fun-loving family pet. What are the main characteristics of the Chipoo? Crossbreed dogs, like The Chi-poo or Wapoo are no more likely to inherit health problems than purebred dogs; in fact, it is believed they may actually be stronger as they are adding more variety into the gene pool. It can be heavily weighted towards the characteristics of one parent. The characteristics of the Chipoo are a combination of nature and nurture: genetics of each parent, the environment, and the quality, type, and amount of training and socialization. The Chipoo dog coat: A short-haired Chihuahua is the usual dog in the Chipoo mix, with its moderate shedding, smooth, straight-haired coat, while the Poodle has a wiry and stiff, wavy coat that sheds less. Poodle—mix dogs, such as the Chipoo were initially crossbred, in the United States, to be hypoallergenic and be suitable for people with dog hair allergies; it had mixed results. Loyalty and companionship The Chihuahua Poodle mix breed will become very attached to its family and especially the master. Reputation: The Chihuahua and the Poodle are both intelligent and sociable dogs that are not known to be aggressive. However, they are known to bark at strangers and other dogs they see as a threat to them or their families. Their size and non-aggressive temperament make them an ideal house pet for any experience of a dog owner, in any type of living accommodation. The Poodle mix is quieter and more reserved than the Chihuahua parent, but both are known to bark when startled or challenged. The Chipoo will be playful and full of energy so be prepared, if you get one, it will expect you to play with it and to have sufficient exercise. Popularity: This Chihuahua and Poodle mix, the Chipoodle, is not the most popular of the designer poodle mix dogs; yet their parents rank as No 6 the Poodle and the No 35 the Chihuahua , in the AKC list of most popular dogs. Perhaps this mix is not as well-known as the other Doodle-dogs and in time could rise in popularity as its parent breeds have. Trainability: When both parent breeds are intelligent and easy to train the Chihuahua Poodle mix should be too. A Chipoo puppy may be tiny but it will be full of energy and high spirits. It will get excited and just want to play and run around, so it should be obedience trained and socialized early. The size of this small dog makes it delicate and vulnerable in play and handling, especially with young children. Therefore, it needs to learn control and understand voice commands, and know when to avoid a situation that might endanger its safety; especially when outdoors in public places or dog parks while playing with other dogs, or boisterous children. This Poochi is very active and needs to be kept occupied to stop boredom and from getting up to mischief; chewing, barking or destroying things. Positive reinforcement and small treats work best for this little pooch, as it likes to please and be praised. It will enjoy and need working challenges incorporating mental and physical stimulation. Socialization: A Chipoo puppy needs exposure to different situations and people early, and practice leaving it alone to help it manage its feelings of separation anxiety, but with you close by. This puppy does not like being left alone for long periods of time and will yap, and may annoy the neighbors! Early socialization and discipline are needed for any active mixed breed dog that likes to be protective of its loved ones. Despite its small size it will be fiercely protective and bark and try to guard its family in the company of other dogs or strangers. Purpose: It will just want to play and hang out with you. It does not have a prey or hunting instinct but it will get bored easily and want to be kept stimulated. In return, it will offer you its love, devotion, and companionship. Behavior: A Chipoo is smart and energetic despite its small size. Obedience training needs to begin early in the puppy years. It will need early leash training as it needs to learn to control its excitement outdoors. It will be naughty if it feels it is not getting enough attention. Physical Characteristics of the Chi-poo This small pooch is friendly, full of energy, and is very sociable. For Females up to lb 1. Temperament: A Chipoo is not known to be aggressive, but it can be mouthy with other dogs and strangers. How should you train a Chi Poo? A Chipoo is intelligent and active and needs to be trained early. You will need patience as the Chipoo can be quite a handful and at times stubborn or moody. Positive reinforcement and reward-based training work best, but never aggressive treatment. Types of training required: obedience, discipline, agility, and socialization. So, if you are not going to use a professional dog trainer: 1 Develop your basic command words: Find keywords such as Stop, Sit, Down, etc. You will have to lock the cage in the early days so it knows it can sleep there and be transported in it. There are products available to help, such as mats and odor sprays to attract puppy go to the same spot each time 4 Walking on a leash — this Poochi is playful and full of energy so early leash training is recommended. Also, practice voice commands and road safety awareness firmly but not harshly. Health problems and health issues Although mixing breeds can often minimize health issues, the Chihuahua Poodle mix could still suffer from certain hereditary health problems from both parent breeds, such as: Luxating Patella — dislocated kneecap — A congenital condition that affects the kneecaps often causes dislocation or loosening of the kneecaps and extreme pain and affected mobility. Progressive Retinal Atrophy PRA — this is a genetic condition where the retina in the eye degenerates and it can lead to vision loss if not diagnosed and treated early. Other eye problems include: Glaucoma, Cataracts, Dry Cornea or Overactive tear glands — watering eyes from blocked or narrow tear ducts; as a result of swelling, or inflammation and the tears are unable to drain away and will build up in the tear sac. Its eyes need to be wiped often. Other health issues include Cardiovascular Heart problems , Dental problems due to their very small jaws , Obesity as they like to eat a lot , and Allergies — dry ears and dry skin conditions and low blood sugar levels. The resulting dog is smart and confident and is gaining popularity thanks to its high trainability and low-shedding coat. In this guide, we will study everything you need to know about this gorgeous designer dog breed. What is a Chi-Poo? As the name indicates, these cute small dogs with soft wavy hair are obtained by mixing a Miniature or Toy Poodle with a Chihuahua. A Chipoo or Chidoodle may be a small dog but it is cute, smart, loyal, and highly protective of the people it loves. Origins Every breed of dog, even the ChiPoo, has wolves as its ancestors. Humans started domesticating and training wolves nearly 14, years ago. Mostly, people wanted animals to do various jobs and, over the years, they bred different species of wolves which created different dog breeds. The Chihuahua breed originated in Mexico and is one of the ancient dog breeds known to exist since the time of the Toltec tribes. Aztec paintings depict the Chihuahuas as much larger and heavier. Soon the Aztecs started breeding smaller and smaller Chihuahuas and even considered them as their treasure. Today, the smart Poodle is ranked second in the list of most intelligent dog breeds and is also extremely popular due to its hypoallergenic, low-shedding coat. In the s, the demand for cross-breed or designer dogs increased when the first hybrid dog- a Labradoodle — was created by crossing a Poodle with a Labrador Retriever. People loved the Labradoodle for its high intelligence and low-shedding coat. Soon dog lovers were demanding smaller cross-breed dogs. The exact origin of the Chi-Poo is unclear but it might have been existing for nearly 3 decades. Chi-Poo Physical Attributes Chipoo owners are curious to find out how big a Chipoo will get when they first bring home this sweet pup. Chidoodles are not purebred dogs so there are no standards as far as their physical attributes are concerned. Most ChiPoos weigh between 5 and 20 lb. They measure between 5 and 15 inches .Chidoodles have medium coats which can be straight, soft, long, short, or curly. The coat colours seen in the designer breed are cream, white, brown, black, brindle, silver, grey, blue, merle and fawn. Chi-Poos will need different frequencies of grooming based on the kind of coat they inherit. In general, you might want to brush your dog every days and wash or bathe it once a month. Is the Chipoo hypoallergenic? Like most Poodle mixes, the Chipoo sheds a lot less than the average dog breed. Therefore, if an individual is highly allergic to pets, then even the supposedly hypoallergenic Chi-Poo or any Poodle mix for that matter could still trigger an allergic reaction in them. Chi-Poo Temperament and Personality Chidoodles are known to be very smart like their Poodle parent although the Chihuahua is also quite bright. They are confident, highly trainable, and assertive dogs; sometimes overly so. This can hinder training so they need a consistent and experienced dog owner who will show them how to behave appropriately by rewarding their good behaviour. ChiPoos are sure to make excellent pets for families with slightly older children. It is important to understand that these small dogs are quite fragile so it is best not to have very boisterous kids playing roughly around them. Chidoodles make excellent lapdogs. This makes them ideal pets for elderly people but they still need a walk or two every day. This is important to prevent obesity in these small dogs. Are Chipoos yappy? Since Poodles and Chihuahuas are both very reactive and tend to bark at everything in their surroundings, the Chidoodles are also quite the barkers. You might find your little dog barking at every sight or sound. To curb this barking habit, you must train your dog to only bark on cue. You also need to desensitize and socialize your little pet to various experiences from an early age. This is very important to prevent separation anxiety , fear, and other behavioural issues in your Chipoo. Are Chi-Poos aggressive? Like their Chihuahua parent, Chi-Poos can have a wide range of personalities. Like terrier breeds, some Chipoos are in-your-face aggressive but others could be shy or timid. In general, aggression is not an inherent trait in the Chidoodle breed and, as such, must be nipped in the bud. No dog owner must tolerate aggression and must use training, socializing, and desensitization to ensure that their ChiPoo puppy turns out to be a friendly, loving adult dog with a sound temperament. The rates are not standardized or regulated so you will find a lot of variation. In addition to considering your Chi-Poo puppy price, you must also consider the lifetime costs that come with dog ownership. What is the Best Food for a Chipoo? Like all dogs, your Chipoo needs a balanced diet consisting of proteins, healthy fats, and vitamins and minerals. You can choose between high-quality kibble or go in for canned or wet food. In general, kibble may be a better choice since, like all small dogs, the Chi-Poo is prone to dental issues. Kibble with the proper texture can help eliminate plaque and tartar to some extent although your pet will also need daily oral care. You can divide this into 2 or 3 smaller meals although puppies will need at least 4 meals. This is important to prevent digestive issues in your young pet while it is still adjusting to the new surroundings. As your dog passes through different life stages, discuss with your vet the right diet to feed it. Some Chi-Poos are known to have food sensitivities so you may have to choose hypoallergenic dog food or special prescription diets to prevent symptoms. How Long Does a Chipoo Live? What are the Common Health Issues in the Breed? ChiPoos are known to have a lifespan of nearly years. The breed is quite healthy but, like all designer dogs, there is a chance that it inherits afflictions commonly seen in the parent breeds. From time to time, the following health issues are seen in Chidoodles: Idiopathic epilepsy — Since Poodles are known to suffer from idiopathic epilepsy, your Chipoo could inherit this disease. It is characterized by seizures, often without a cause. Luxating patella — Both Chihuahuas and Poodles are known to have this issue. It causes the knee cap to pop out of its normal position causing lameness. Legg-Calve Perthes disease — This results in the degeneration of the femoral head. Hypoglycemia — this condition is seen in Chihuahuas. It causes low blood sugar which can lead to lethargy or dizziness in the affected dogs. Tracheal collapse — this condition is also seen in Chihuahuas and it causes shortness of breath and a permanent honking cough. To minimize the chances of your having to deal with these health issues, only buy your ChiPoo from a reputable breeder. Good breeders conduct appropriate health checks on their parent dogs and only breed ones that have received the appropriate health clearances. His temperament and intelligence are above average. At the vet I heard the vet and techs in the back gushing over how behaved he was and they sent me home with extra goodies for him hehe. He's already house trained. I've already been able to teach him two commands "here" and "place". He's also the best snuggler and is sooo very patient and forgiving with my tornado of a two year old son. He is the best dog I've had in my entire life and love him to the moon. I can't wait until he's old enough to start going on adventures with us. Thank ya'll for a wonderful dog! We get soooo much attention with her! We've had people literally pull off the road just to comment on her! Lots of people asking if we are going to breed her! We are meeting with someone on Friday to evaluate her for protection training. Sunny was pulled from a local shelter Christmas of after a hoarding abandonment case of 27 plus fearful feral dogs left behind in a property. The home was condemned, disgusting filthy. A home in such condition, no animal or human should have to live in. Sunny and 3 others call the sanctuary home for the time being, all are doing amazing with their rehab, learning what life as a loved pet should be. Sunny struggles to settle in and takes more time then the others. She is the one that stresses easily when meeting new people but with a playful active dog mentoring her she does so much better. She slowly warms up some when it comes to people, still unsure if she wants human affection at first but will always take a treat, moves in for petting, willing to snuggle and even cuddle. Sunny loves all the dogs, is good with cats and small critters too. Sunny has an amazing personality she herself is still learning about who she is. Always best to approach her slow at first. Sunny needs a lot of confidence still, and that requires a lot of patience with no set time frame and expectations ever. Allow her to live life 1 day at a time. Sunny walks amazing on leash, barks very little but barks. Understanding that continued training is a lifetime commitment, is very important. Rabbit Advice Is doggy breath normal? Bad breath in dogs is not normal, but it is common! Puppies always have sweet smelling breath because they do not yet have a build-up of the bacteria that causes bad breath. If you have a dog that likes kissing you, you will soon notice if their breath is a bit whiffy! Tooth and gum disease — This is by far the most common reason for bad breath in dogs. As dogs age, these problems get worse, which is why we encourage all owners to brush their dogs teeth. A scale and polish will dramatically improve the smell as it will get rid of the plaque and tartar that are causing problems. If the breath is very bad, then there may be tooth decay and a lot of infection present. Other things that can cause bad breath in your dog: Fishy diets — Some diets can cause more smelly breath than others. Try one that is not fish based as these do tend to lead to fishy breath in some dogs. You may also see your dog pawing at their mouth. Kidney, liver disease and diabetes — If your dog is unwell or is drinking more than normal as well as having bad breath, then they may be poorly. Take them to the vet as soon as possible. You will often notice other signs such as vomiting, or diarrhoea before you notice the bad breath. Mouth tumours — You may notice a really nasty smell and your dog may have blood stained saliva and have difficulty eating. This requires an urgent trip to see your vet. Here are a few — from the doggy point of view! Take me to the vet if I have bad breath and ask the kind people there to examine my teeth and gums regularly. Buy me a tooth brush and some lovely meaty toothpaste. Watch a video on how to clean my teeth. A professional scale and polish at the vets please! Buy me a special veterinary dental diet which will help remove plaque and bacteria from my mouth, keeping my breath smelling sweet! Give me lots of cuddles, playtime and walkies — reward me with affection and my normal food instead of sugary treats which might be bad for my teeth. Understanding why your dog has bad breath is the first step in appropriately treating not only the smell but the underlying cause. In the past 10 years, dental hygiene in dogs has changed from occasional tooth extractions to yearly dental examinations and routine teeth cleaning. Here are some of the most common: Dental or Gum Disease: The most common cause of bad breath halitosis in dogs is periodontal disease. Similar to humans, dogs with crowded teeth or crooked, misaligned teeth malocclusions may be at a higher risk for secondary dental disease; however, most dogs will develop some tartar or plaque buildup dental calculus or gingivitis at some point in their life. Dental disease develops when an overgrowth of bacteria in the mouth forms a plaque, which leads to tartar buildup. Tartar can lead to inflammation of the gums gingivitis. Some foreign bodies, like splinters, can get stuck under the tongue or in the cheek and may be hard to see. In some circumstances, strings or linear foreign material may get hooked under the tongue, and the bad breath could be accompanied by not eating and vomiting. Excessive urea, called uremia, can cause ulceration in the mouth as well, which your vet may see on examination. Diabetes: When diabetes becomes unregulated or untreated for a long enough period of time, the body starts breaking down fat, creating molecules called ketones. Dogs that are producing ketones secondary to diabetes may have an acetone or sweet smell to their breath. Dogs with diabetes often have other symptoms such as weight loss, changes in appetite, and increased thirst and urination. Dogs who eat cigarettes may have a nicotine odor to their breath. There are hundreds of toxins present in the environment, and being able to detect what your dog may have been exposed to could help determine the right treatment. Dog breath that smells like fecal matter may be linked to simply eating poop. Oral Tumors: More common in older animals, the development of oral cancers or tumors can lead to bad breath. As masses grow, they can become infected, and parts of the tissues can start to die necrose , leading to persistent bad breath despite good dental care. The most common oral tumors in dogs are melanoma , squamous cell carcinoma, and peripheral odontogenic fibromas. Dietary Deficiencies: Feeding your dog raw or home-cooked diets may disrupt the normal balance of bacteria in the mouth or gut. If you feed your dog a raw or home-cooked diet , try to consult with a veterinary nutritionist or if not, your regular vet to help prevent dietary deficiencies. If your dog is prone to periodontal disease, routine cleaning may be needed to help prevent excessive tartar formation and frequent dental extractions having teeth pulled. Many dog toothpastes are flavored to be enticing to dogs. Dental Treats and Products: Dental treats can either help physically remove plaque as your dog chews or may contain additives that promote a healthy oral environment. Other products like dental water additives can be used to help mask bad breath as well as promote oral health. Dental Diets: There are dental diets made for dogs that can help reduce plaque buildup. They use a larger kibble size and a course texture to scrape along the tooth and remove plaque as your dog chews. The Veterinary Oral Health Council VOHC can be a useful resource in picking veterinary-recommended dental diets, treats, and supplements that are safe and effective. Featured image: iStock. However, there are products that can help to lessen the bad breath and prevent it from worsening. The Veterinary Oral Health Council has a list of recommended products that may help. This can be pretty frustrating, especially when your dog is one of the most adorable creatures on the planet! Odor is a common problem for golden retriever breed dog and can be caused by a variety of things, including diet, poor grooming, yeast infections, and health problems. In this blog post, we will discuss why golden retrievers smell bad and how to fix it. We will also talk about some of the reasons why they may develop an odor, as well as tips for keeping your dog smelling its best. Do All Goldens Smell Bad? No, not all golden retrievers smell bad. However, the breed is known for being prone to developing an odor. Their coat can harbor dirt, bacteria, and other things that can cause them to smell bad, even fishy at times. This is a difficult question to answer. All dogs have different natural smells, and some breeds are known for being more smelly than others. For example, basset hounds are known for their strong odor, while poodles are not. Golden retrievers fall somewhere in the middle. They are not as smelly as some breeds, but they are certainly not odor-free. There are a few different things that can cause golden retrievers to smell bad. This is one of the least likely reasons your Golden may be stinking up your house. But, it is possible. For example, if your Golden is eating a lot of fish, he may start to smell like one! If your dog has allergies, they may manifest in their skin and cause them to have an odor. This is especially true for food allergies. Yeast infections: Yeast infections are common in dogs, and they can often cause a bad smell. These infections can occur on the skin, in the ears, or even in the gut. If your dog has a yeast infection, he may have a musty smell. These can be treated with anti fungal medications, but you should always consult your veterinarian first. Skin infections: Skin infections are another common cause of odor in dogs. These can be caused by bacteria, yeast, or even allergies. If your dog has a skin infection, he may have a foul smell, usually accompanied by itchiness. These can be treated with antibiotics or other medications, but you should always consult your veterinarian first. Rolling in smelly dirt: This one is pretty self-explanatory. This is often the case with dogs who love to play outside. Dogs are especially attracted to the scent of dead worms and other small creatures. So, if you live in an area with a lot of these critters, your dog may be more likely to roll in their scent. Goldens need to be brushed regularly at least once a day to prevent their fur from harboring dirt and bacteria. How often you bathe them should depend on how dirty they get. For example, if your Golden lives in the water a lot, their fur can harbor that dampness and mildew smell if not properly dried after swimming or playing in the rain. Health problems: Some health problems can cause dogs to develop an unpleasant odor. For example, kidney disease and diabetes can both lead to a fruity or sweet smell. Brush them regularly and bathe them as needed. A good rule of thumb is to brush them at least once a day and bathe them every three to four weeks. Over bathing can actually strip the natural oils from their skin and make them more susceptible to skin infections. Use a quality dog shampoo: When you do bathe your Golden, be sure to use a quality dog shampoo. Human shampoo is not designed for dogs and can cause irritation. Look for a shampoo that is designed explicitly for Golden Retrievers or other dogs with sensitive skin. Use dry dog shampoo: Yes, they make such a thing! They work by absorbing the oils and dirt from their fur. Ear infections are one of the most common causes of foul odor in dogs. You can usually tell if your dog has an ear infection if they are shaking their head a lot or scratching at their ears. If you suspect your dog has an ear infection, take them to the vet right away. Brush their teeth: Just like humans, dogs need to have their teeth brushed regularly. This helps prevent plaque and tartar buildup, which can lead to bad breath. You can use a special dog toothbrush and toothpaste or just a regular toothbrush do not use human toothpaste on your dog. Invest in a good quality dog food: A healthy diet is essential for all dogs, but it can be especially helpful in reducing odor. Make sure you take your dog to the vet to rule out any allergies if the suspected stench is coming from their diet. Keep any personal items, dog beds, blankets, fav stuffed animals clean: These items can hold on to smells, so be sure to wash them regularly. A good rule of thumb is to wash dog beds and blankets every two weeks and stuffed animals once a month. There could be an underlying health issue causing the odor. Over the years we read about Vizslas. If stinky dog smell is the only thing stopping you from getting a dog do some research on Vizslas. In general, there is very little you can do about the fact that your dog smells like, well, a dog! It could just be that your golden has particularly oily skin and needs to be bathed more frequently, but it could also be a sign of an infection or other medical issue. Below you will find a list of the main factors that can cause golden retrievers to smell bad. But if their general smell is the same but seems stronger than usual, it might just be that it has been a while since they have had a bath. Over time, the build-up can start to give off a strong smell, especially if there is oil build-up in the folds of their skin. If their smell is becoming too strong for you, then it is time to give your dog a bath. Most vets advise against giving your dog a bath too often because it can leave their skin dry and make it prone to irritation. The standard recommendation for golden retrievers is to bathe them once a month or less often if you can stand the smell. However, if you are using a gentle shampoo designed specifically for your dog, you can get away with bathing them more often if you need to. But regular brushing between washes can also help control their body oil levels, and therefore their smell. They may be too harsh on your dogs coat and skin. This can cause them to start running up against walls and rubbing their body against everything else in an attempt to wipe off the smell. In fact we use this shampoo when our newborn puppies needed a quick bath… week old puppies really like rolling around in their poop… This mild shampoo is designed specifically for puppies, or can be used on older dogs that need regular baths. It also lightly conditions the skin with botanical extracts and is mild enough to use on a regular basis. View Price This mild shampoo is great for dogs that have itchy skin as it soothes with oatmeal and aloe vera. It also includes vanilla bean extract, which is good at combating bad odors. Vitamin E keeps their coat soft and healthy. Infection If your dog has some type of infection, the bacteria or yeast associated with that infection can also be the source of a bad or unusual odor. For example, ear infections are common among dogs like golden retrievers because their long ears cover the ear canal. This creates a nice, dark breeding ground for bacteria, which can in turn result in a very unpleasant smell. Unfortunately, one of our Labs used to have chronic ear infections. Alternatively, if your dog has a skin infection, perhaps associated with allergies , they can scratch a lot and break the skin, creating wounds that can easily become infected and start to smell. Mouth Smell If your dog has an unusually bad smell, give their mouth a sniff and see if it is the source of the odor. Any dental issues can cause bacteria to build up in their mouth, which can smell very bad. Also examine their teeth for any that might be cracked or broken and require a trip to the vet. Smells can emerge up the esophagus and exit through their mouths. This is a signal that you should visit the vet, as related conditions can be serious if not treated promptly. Bad breath can also just be the result of bad dental hygiene. We use and recommend Arm and Hammer toothbrush and toothpaste and our favorite type of chews are bully sticks which themselves will often be quite stinky. Smelly cat dog , smelly dog , what are they feeding you? What you feed your dog could be the cause of his stinky smell. Farting is normal for dogs. Gases build up in the body as a natural part of the digestive processes, and farting is the only way to eliminate that gas. But if your dog is passing gas excessively or the gas has a very bad smell, an underlying health or dietary issue could be to blame. Your dog will often develop digestive issues when you change their food. Despite the fact it seems like they will eat anything and everything, dogs actually have quite sensitive digestive systems, and any sudden change in their diet can cause issues. However, these issues will typically go away on their own once your dog has become accustomed to the new diet. Human food with spices and other ingredients that are not good for your dog, such as onion and garlic, can also upset their stomach. This is one of the many reasons why you should never feed your dog food scraps off your plate despite those adorable, pleading puppy eyes. If their food is not the culprit, then it could be that your dog has an allergy to something specific in their food, and you should consult your vet. It is worth noting here that problems with grains are very rare among dogs, so while you might want to try grain-free dog food, this may not solve the problem. We will usually mix it in with some dry kibble, Wellness Core. Anal Sacs Dogs have two glands either side of their anus that fill up with a bad-smelling substance as part of their digestive process. However, if their anal sacs have become impacted or infected, they may be secreting this bad-smelling substance without pooping. You will probably also notice them licking themselves in this area a lot or scooting to try and give themselves some relief from itchiness. While a problem caused by a mild impaction will probably go away on its own after a day or two, an infection will usually only get worse and can become chronic. In this case, it is time to visit the vet to manually express the anal sacs and deal with the infection. Our older rescue, Linus used to have some anal sac issues. There would be a day or two when we had that fishy smell. Top Tips For Keeping Your Dog Smelling Good While a bad odor can be a sign that something is wrong, a strong dog smell can just be natural for some dogs, especially for dogs with thick coats that like to rough and tumble like golden retrievers. If you just want to keep your golden smelling good in general rather than deal with a specific bad smell, the following tips should help. Give your dog a bath. About once a month with a shampoo for dogs that is balanced for the pH of their skin which is different from the human pH is ideal. Brush their teeth frequently, and daily if possible. This will maintain their dental hygiene and ensure pleasant breath. Check their ears regularly. Remove dirt and debris at least weekly. Wash their bedding regularly. This will remove bacteria and help keep odors under control. If you change their diet, do it gradually by mixing their old food with new food at first so as not to cause excess flatulence. Visit the vet if they start to smell differently for no apparent reason. FAQs Why does my dog stink even after a bath? If your dog is stinky even after a bath, the source of the smell is likely to be something other than their natural body odor. Look for signs of infection, especially around the ears and mouth, as these can be sources of a bad smell. If the stench is coming from their backside, then it could be something in their diet or an infection of the anal sacs. Why is my dog smelling all of a sudden? While some of the causes of this odor are minor and can be easily fixed, others can indicate more severe health issues. Understanding these causes is essential for effectively addressing the issue. Here are the top 7 causes: Skin Infections: Skin infections, such as bacterial or yeast infections, can lead to an unpleasant odor. Anal Gland Problems: Golden Retrievers have anal glands that produce a scent. When these glands become impacted or infected, they can emit a fishy smell. Expressing the anal glands regularly can help prevent odor-related issues. Dietary Factors: Certain foods, especially those high in fish-based proteins, can contribute to fishy-smelling breath or body odor in Golden Retrievers. The digestion of these proteins can result in a lingering smell. This can lead to an increase in oil production, resulting in an odor. Ear Infections: Golden Retrievers are prone to ear infections, which can produce a distinct odor. Bacteria or yeast overgrowth in the ears can cause discomfort and emit a fishy smell. Dental Problems: Poor dental hygiene and oral health issues, such as gum disease or tooth decay, can contribute to bad breath and an overall fishy smell in Golden Retrievers. Understanding these causes will help you pinpoint the source of the fishy smell in Golden Retrievers and take appropriate measures to address them effectively. Continue reading as we give you tips on how to prevent the fishy smell in Golden Retrievers. This includes brushing their coat to remove loose hair and prevent matting, which can trap odors. Use a high-quality, breed-appropriate brush and consider professional grooming services as needed. Bathing: Bathe your Golden Retriever regularly, but not excessively, as frequent bathing can strip their coat of natural oils. Use a mild, dog-specific shampoo that helps eliminate odors. Be sure to rinse thoroughly to avoid residue that may contribute to lingering smells. Brush their teeth regularly using dog-friendly toothpaste and provide dental chews or toys to help reduce plaque and tartar buildup. Good oral hygiene can minimize fishy breath odors. Regularly check for signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, or discharge. Clean their ears gently with a veterinarian-recommended ear cleaning solution and follow any specific instructions provided. Healthy Diet: Provide a balanced and high-quality diet for your Golden Retriever. Choose dog food formulas that are free from fillers and artificial additives. Some owners find that switching to a diet with alternative protein sources, such as poultry or lamb, can help reduce fishy odors. Proper anal gland function can help minimize fishy smells associated with glandular issues. Keep them away from stagnant water, strong fish scents, or other potential odor sources during walks or outdoor activities. By following these preventative measures, Golden Retriever owners can help keep their dogs smelling fresh and minimize the occurrence of fishy odors. Here are some effective solutions to consider: Veterinary Consultation: If your Golden Retriever is experiencing persistent or severe fishy odors, consult a veterinarian for a proper diagnosis. They can identify any underlying medical conditions that may contribute to the smell and recommend appropriate treatments. Medicated Shampoos: Use specially formulated medicated shampoos designed to combat skin infections and reduce odors. These shampoos often contain antibacterial or antifungal agents to help treat underlying causes of fishy smells. Follow the instructions provided by your veterinarian or the product manufacturer. Dietary Supplements: Certain dietary supplements can help promote healthy skin and coat, reducing fishy odors. Omega-3 fatty acids, for example, have anti-inflammatory properties and can improve overall skin health. Consult your veterinarian for recommendations on suitable supplements for your Golden Retriever. Specialized Grooming Techniques: Consider using specific grooming techniques that help address fishy smells. For example, regular ear cleaning using veterinarian-recommended solutions can prevent or treat ear infections that contribute to odor. Additionally, proper anal gland expression performed by a professional groomer or veterinarian can help alleviate odor issues. Addressing Hormonal Imbalances: If hormonal imbalances are causing fishy smells, your veterinarian may suggest appropriate treatments or medications to restore balance. This could involve hormone replacement therapy or other medical interventions. Allergy Management: Allergies can contribute to skin infections and odors. If your Golden Retriever has allergies, work with your veterinarian to identify and manage the allergens. This may involve dietary changes, allergen avoidance, or medications to control allergy symptoms and prevent associated odor issues. Regularly wash bedding, vacuum areas where your dog spends time, and keep their living space free from excessive moisture or odorous substances that could contribute to fishy smells. Remember, the appropriate cure or remedy depends on the underlying cause of the fishy smell. This could indicate a chronic issue like a skin infection or an anal gland problem. Changes in Behavior: If your dog is licking or scratching excessively at one area, or if they seem more tired than usual, these could be signs of an underlying problem causing the odor. Physical Changes: Redness, swelling, or discharge in any area of the body, particularly around the ears, mouth, or anus, should be evaluated by a vet. Digestive Issues: Issues like constipation, diarrhea, or unusual stool such as very hard, very soft, or oddly colored stool can be signs of a larger problem. These symptoms, especially when accompanied by a bad smell, should prompt a vet visit. Eating or Drinking Changes: If your dog has suddenly lost their appetite, or seems to be drinking an excessive amount of water, these changes could be indicative of a health issue. Conclusion Managing and preventing unpleasant odors in your Golden Retriever is an important part of maintaining their overall health and wellbeing. Regular grooming, a balanced diet, and attention to dental hygiene can go a long way in preventing fishy smells. Remember, Golden Retrievers are not just pets, but members of our families, and their health and happiness directly contribute to our own. Trust your instincts — you know your dog better than anyone else. With a little diligence and a lot of love, your Golden Retriever can stay happy, healthy, and fresh-smelling! While this is not always the case, the smell may indicate an underlying issue such as allergies, hormonal imbalances, or a skin infection. Bathing your Golden Retriever regularly with mild shampoo can help prevent fishy smells. There are a few home remedies you can try if you want to get rid of fishy odors in your Golden Retriever. Grooming your dog regularly, using deodorizing sprays or powders, and washing bedding and fabric items can help. Jan 14, May 29, If your puppy has bad breath that is not going away, mention it to your veterinarian. Very young puppies have a distinct smell to their breath, lovingly called puppy breath. Puppy breath begins to wane by 8—10 weeks of age. Although I associate the strong puppy breath smell as something that is hard to smell after 12 weeks, some people think it can linger until 6 months. Normal puppy breath is most obvious during nursing and just after the puppy is weaned. Humans have a genetic predisposition to how their noses interpret the specific smells like puppy breath. My nose smells a heavy, sweet-sour, skunk odor that is not at all pleasant when adorable little pups try to lick my face. Many other people experience a sweet, pleasant odor and are sad when the puppy grows out of the puppy breath stage. If only that were true. Factors Responsible for Puppy Breath The scientific explanation is also a bit unscientific. This is an insufficient explanation, however, since puppy breath lingers for several weeks after weaning. Puppy mouths are clean and healthy, harboring none of the oral bacteria common in older dogs. The GI tracts of puppies contain different bacteria and flora than do those of adults. The most common cause of bad breath in a puppy is teething. If your pup has a truly bad smell to their breath, here are 6 possible reasons for the odor: 1. Teething Far and away, the most common cause of unpleasant, bad or different puppy breath is teething. This is more obvious in some puppies than others. As the pup gets further away from being weaned and is in the true teething stage, the quality of the breath changes. Here is a timeline of the typical puppy tooth eruption: Baby deciduous teeth begin to erupt by week 2 or 3. All 28 baby teeth are in by week 5 or 6. Baby teeth begin to fall out during weeks 12—.Adult teeth are in by 6 months. When a pup is cutting teeth, there can be inflammation that carries an odor. Sometimes a tooth has a difficult time cutting through, a puppy tooth might fracture, or the pup might be teething so much on toys or treats that it causes very sore gums. Due to bleeding around the gums, some people think puppy teething has a sort of metallic smell. Try to avoid extremely hard bones or toys when your pup is very young and teething. Those tiny teeth fracture easily, complicating the loss of baby teeth and the normal eruption of the adult teeth. Veterinary dentists often recommend KONG toys and similar rubbery toys that you can load up with food or treats. Cool washcloths are better than ice — chewing on ice can cause tooth fracture. Mouth Injury or Difficulty Cutting Teeth Pups chew on anything and everything , so it is quite common for them to injure their mouths while teething and growing. Although minor injuries heal quickly since the oral cavity is quick to heal, a foreign body such as a piece of stick or toy can get lodged in the oral cavity, causing a foul odor. A very bad smell, however, or a pup showing any oral pain or difficulty chewing requires a vet visit sooner rather than later. Breath can smell bad following a meal of dog poop, cat poop, garbage, decaying leaves, etc. Think of yourself after a meal of heavy garlic — that everything bagel you had this morning can annoy your friends and family for the rest of the day! You might actually be able to identify what your puppy ate with careful sniffing. Cat poop is usually highly identifiable. Try to monitor what your puppy eats. Bad breath is unpleasant, but dietary indiscretion can cause much more serious problems, such as serious vomiting and diarrhea or an intestinal blockage. Photo: congerdesign 4. Indigestion Does the food cause bad breath? Probably not. Most vets agree that food does not cause bad breath. That being said, a certain puppy food may not agree with your pet and may be causing a degree of indigestion. A bad odor from the GI tract may also be accompanied by excessive belching, passing gas , or vomiting and diarrhea. Consult your vet about food choices. Your puppy may need a bland diet for 1—2 weeks to get over indigestion. Then you can gradually change the food over a week or so to see if symptoms improve. Periodontal Disease Young pups rarely have true dental disease. Problems related to gum disease or serious tooth issues do not usually occur before 3 years old. Introduce tooth brushing by 6 months of age, or even earlier if possible. Brush the teeth at least 3 times a week when your dog is young. By 3 years of age, brushing every day is the best way to prevent periodontal and tooth disease. Metabolic Disease In rare cases, a puppy can have a bad or strange breath odor due to metabolic disease, such as kidney failure. The pup may be showing other signs and symptoms of illness. Your vet will recommend blood tests as the first diagnostic tool in these atypical cases. Possibly the best way to prevent bad breath in dogs is to keep their teeth clean and prevent them from eating things that are smelly. When it comes to fixing bad breath in dogs, it is always best to work on cleaning their teeth as well. In this article we will be explaining how dog owners can fix and prevent bad breath in dogs. In addition to this, we will also be explaining what causes bad breath in dogs and when you should see a vet about this issue. However, there are some other conditions that can cause bad breath in dogs as well such as stomach problems and diabetes. Here are the most common causes of bad breath in dogs: Bacteria Dogs do not floss, use mouthwash, or brush their teeth in the same way that people do. Although owners can brush their dogs teeth with toothpaste that has been made specifically for dogs, we can sometimes forget to do this. This causes a dog to have bad breath, and they may exhibit other symptoms such as pain in the mouth, sneezing, bleeding, and a reduced appetite. In addition to this, they may also have a noticeable amount of gum inflammation and tartar buildup. This can include garbage, rotten foods, dead animals, and even feces. Your dog may have some foul smelling breath after eating things like this. In addition to bad smelling breath dogs with these kinds of issues may have smelly farts and loose stools. Diabetes Some dog owners may be surprised to discover that diabetes can cause bad breath in dogs. This strange breath odor has been reported to smell sweet or fruity, and it is a sign that you need to take your pet to the vet as soon as possible. In addition to this strange smell on their breath diabetic dogs may experience: Increased urination and thirst.

For the third year in a row, we lucked out on creating an original and fun Valentine card box to hold all those sweet notes from classmates! Unlike other years, this year we procrastinated making a Valentine card box and pulled off a night-before-Valentine's Day miracle. My daughter couldn't decide what she wanted, and we accidentally threw out all of our boxes a few nights before. Then, the heavens opened up and we had, once again - a corn dog box to work with! As you've seen from our other Valentine boxes, the corn dog box is apparently our destined go-to for Valentine's Day. Ours measured about 4 inches wide and 2. Use the utility knife and carefully cut out the mouth shape. Wrap the box like you would a regular present, but keep the seams on the back and the sides so they won't show on the front. Use clear tape, and try to keep all the edges as smooth as you can. Feel for the hole of the mouth, then carefully cut an "X" from the corners of the mouth. Fold the paper inside and tape it down on the inside of the box. In case you didn't know, you can upload your own. If you are also using a corn dog box, the image size shouldn't need to be adjusted at all. Don't have a cutter? No problem! You can totally cut out the puppy face by hand or even paint it on!! Cut the design out of black, pink and red cardstock and attach to the box with a glue stick, or my a quick-drying glue like Aleene's Tacky Glue. For a more realistic-looking tongue, glue the circled edge down and fold the other end into the mouth and tape it down on the inside. If you are like us, you'll know that everything can always use a bit more sparkle! We didn't have enough time since we procrastinated , but you can definitely spray your Valentine box with some glitter spray or Glitter Mod Podge and let it dry completely. Sorry we are posting a little too late for this year - but feel free to save this tutorial for next year!! I'd love to see pictures of your kid's Valentine box ideas, too! Feel free to post your pictures on my Facebook page!

umbilical hernia english bulldog puppy - Why do you think the police force and military are using the German Shepherd so much? Sure, a Doberman can do the job just fine and there are definitely dog breeds that have stronger olfactory senses or stronger bites but they may not be willing to obey every command in every situation. They are too intelligent to outright obey everything which can sometimes be perceived as stubborn. Does that mean the German Shepherd is not smart? Absolutely not. In fact, the German Shepherd is often cited as one of the smartest dog breeds, right after their cousin the Belgian Shepherd, also known as Malinois. Their will to please outranks. How trainable is the German Shepherd Husky mix? Well, the Husky is known to be quite independent by design. So even though pairing these two very smart dog breeds makes sense at first glance, a Shepherd Husky mix might not be as easy to train as imagined. That being said, pairing a German Shepherd with a more agreeable Husky can certainly help. Genetics and temperament of the parents always play a pretty big role. This is not always the case and even a purebred may struggle with protection without proper direction and training. Always consult a professional to avoid teaching your dog negative behavior patterns barking at strangers on walks, lunging at dogs, and so on. Huskies are incredibly enduring. How could they not, they were bred to run hundreds of miles in very cold climates. But their original working purpose was quite specific and they may need to have an outlet for this desire to run. Training your dog early on will prevent behavioral issues in the future and gets your dog used to brain training. Since both breeds are relatively high energy, you need to walk your Shepsky at least twice a day for a minimum of minutes each. The German Shepherd is known to be a formidable family dog while the Husky can be quite reserved. Huskies are used to living and working in a pack and can be very sociable animals while Shepherds develop a deep bond with their owners. Although pairing these two breeds can produce great family dogs, there are other large dog breeds that are even suitable for apartment living out there that are very patient with children and also perfect for guarding property. Expect to have a very smart dog that will challenge you throughout the day. He will probably grow into a medium to large-sized dog with a weight of about 40 to 80 pounds. Both dogs are working breeds so you can expect a Shepsky to have high exercise needs. A task or daily job would keep them the happiest. Grooming Both dog breeds can have relatively similar coat types. Huskies have a thick double coat, meaning an undercoat plus guard hair. While the undercoat is soft and dense, the guard hairs are straight and somewhat smooth. Depending on the specific pairing, the coat can be a toin coss. Be ready for shedding seasons with both of these dogs. You can expect your male German Shepherd Husky mix to be in cm with a weight of lbs kg. Female German Shepherd Husky mixes range from in cm , weighing in at lbs kg. Apartment Living Can you live in an apartment with a high-energy dog like the German Shepherd Husky mix? It depends. If you provide your dog with an outlet for his exercise needs which means lots of walks, play, and training then there should be absolutely no problem. However, their tendency for high-pitched barks or howling may cause problems with your neighbors. Proper training will help and entails teaching your dog the quiet command. Would I advise you to buy a mixed breed from a breeder? Definitely not. There are far too many mixed breeds sitting in shelters and waiting to be chosen. As long as there are no health issues present in their ancestry, you could argue that mixed breeds might be healthier than purebreds from backyard breeders. Beware of backyard breeders mixing in a third breed without stating so. Make sure to check out my breeder questions before you fall victim to scammers or backyard breeders. Make sure to talk to a veterinarian or nutritionist first. Do you have a German Shepherd Husky mix? Share with us your experiences in the comments below! The resulting dog is a genetic gamble in terms of health and temperament and offers no advantage to a health-tested dog or rescuing. Disclaimer: This blog post does not substitute veterinary attention and does not intend to do so. I am not a veterinarian or pet nutritionist. If your dog shows any sign of illness, call your vet. Post navigation. Each litter typically produces adorably fluffy puppies, each of which may look different. Some will inherit heterochromia — or different colored eyes — from their Husky parent, while others will receive the longer snout of their German Shepherd parent. History: Emergence of the Gerberian Shepsky To understand this active and loving mixed breed, we must first understand purebred Huskys and German Shepherds. As we mentioned, the German Shepherd is known as a herding dog. They were developed in for herding and guarding sheep in Germany. The Husky is a working dog, first bred over years ago in Siberia. They arrived in Alaska in where they ran hard as sledding dogs and stole the hearts of locals with their goofy personalities. No formal records document the first hybrid litter of Gerberian Huskys. In general, the German Shepherd Husky Mix has an ideal temperament. They get their friendly, silly, and gentle qualities from the Husky side, while they receive loyalty and bravery from their Shepherd side. While Huskies never meet a stranger, shepherds are standoffish. The combination leads to a perfect balance. Once grown, your Gerberian Shepky will protect you, and guard your family from anything- all while providing love, cuddles and plenty of adorable moments to last a lifetime! They are great around children, and when socialized from a young age, can live well with other animals. The German Shepherd Husky mixed breed is incredibly intelligent will learn quickly when trained appropriately. Huskies can be stubborn and become bored easily, while the German Shepherd loves to learn new things and have a job to do. If your puppy is more Husky, he may prefer hours of running, rather than mental stimulation. For example, hold out a toy or treat and let your pup catch a whiff. Then, hide the object and let your pup sniff it out. Get creative with your training and bond with your puppy to find what works for you! Be sure to keep your Gerberian Shepsky well exercised and mentally stimulated to avoid developing unwanted negative behaviors like barking, howling a husky favorite , and chewing. Calorie requirements differ based on age, weight, activity level, and sex. For example, a quickly growing puppy requires more calories than an adult Shepsky and should eat food specifically formulated for puppies. In contrast, active adult German Shepherd Husky mixes require about calories, while less active and senior dogs only require calories per day. A high quality food, formulated for large breeds is best. Remember to account for special treats in daily caloric needs! Get the whole family together for a walk or run. Continuously switch up the route so your Shepsky never gets bored. Other recommendations include providing at least 2 hours a day of moderate to vigorous physical activity. German Shepherd Husky mixes do best in an environment where they can play, run, and roam. Your new pet will be most content when able to participate in interactive activities like obstacle courses and challenging puzzles. With lots of love and attention, your Gerberian Shepsky will settle into a nice routine of work and play. Be sure to snuggle up for plenty of cuddles at the end of a long day! Shepsky Health Considerations Like their purebred parents, German Shepherd Husky mixes may suffer from certain health issues due to their genes. When you purchase a puppy, your breeder should be happy to provide a detailed health screening of the parents. Joint Dysplasia causes the elbows and hips to develop abnormally, leading to pain and eventual loss of movement if left untreated. If caught early, the condition can be treated successfully with medication or corrective surgery. Cataracts, inherited from the Husky parent, are issues with the lens of the eye that will lead to decreased vision over time. If left untreated, your Gerberian Shepsky may become disoriented, confused, and even aggressive as he loses his ability to process his surroundings. Again, if caught early, this disease can be treated with medication or surgery. This condition causes the stomach to swell and twist around it self. The risk is passed on to your Shepsky and great care must be taken to avoid it! Simply remain attentive to how much and how often your pup is eating and you should be safe. And, much like a wolf, the Shepsky mix possesses a strong snout and piercing eyes. They may even have two different colored eyes! Puppies with heterochromia are highly coveted and will cost more. But they are worth it — so gorgeous and unique! Just like the eyes, Gerberian Shepsky coats may be a variety of colors based on which parent they most closely resemble. Common colors include white, gray, silver, tan, red, and the classic German Shepherd coat color — Sable! Because the Husky originated as a sled dog, their coats are adapted for the cold climates of Siberia and Alaska. However, they are double coated and may shed one coat to accommodate warm temperatures. Your Shepsky will also have a double coat that requires twice weekly brushing sessions to promote proper shedding and skin health. Additionally, frequent full bathes are harmful to your German Sherpherd Husky mixes natural oils. This can lead to irritation and dry, itchy skin. Instead, only bath them when necessary with a gentle shampoo. Simply spot clean in between with a damp cloth, and use a non-toxic deodorizing spray if necessary! What stimulation or exercise your dogs need depends upon their motivation and temperament. German Shepherd and Husky Mix Training Suggestions A fairly intelligent breed interested in learning and in caring for their owner, a German Shepherd and Husky Mix is relatively easy to train. Not properly trained, these dogs can acquire habits that make the owners clench their teeth pull their hair out. From howling too much to knocking things over to chewing on shoes, there are many things you must keep your dog from doing. A German Shepherd and Husky Mix is very sensitive to vocal commands, making the training process more efficient and much easier. Start obedience training at an early age to prevent annoying habits from developing, and so that you and your pup both can live a happy life together. However, it has a predatory nature, and without proper socialization or training, it might get inro trouble with rodent-type pets or even cats. They can also be extremely overprotective of children and other members of the family. If they feel that the humans they love are in danger, they may attack strangers, so watch them for this kind of behavior. We all know that every dog is unique, so you must socialize them correctly to prevent any untoward incidents. Known to be intelligent and extremely loyal, the German Shepherd Husky Mix is a fun loving, sweet, and pleasant dog. It is great service or companion dog for the family. Getting a dog with a Siberian Husky or a German Shepherd descent can break the bank for many first-time owners. Lucky for them, the Siberian Husky German Shepherd is a relatively affordable dog. Be warned, though. Proper breeding costs a lot of money when it comes to veterinary care, health screening, vaccinations, flea treatments, deworming, and many other procedures to ensure that the puppy is healthy. Your vet can help you develop a care routine that will keep your dog healthy. Shepskies are prone to weight gain, and they have high energy levels. One hour of exercise per day is a good starting point. They need dog parks and wide open spaces. Check their ears for debris and pests daily and clean them as recommended by your vet. They should not be clicking against the floor. Your groomer can help with this. You should brush their teeth daily, as many breeds are prone to dental issues. Shepsky Feeding A Shepsky diet should be formulated for a medium sized breed with high energy and exercise needs. You should consult your veterinarian or professional nutritionist for advice on what to feed your Shepsky and the correct portion sizes. Their dietary needs will change as they grow from puppyhood to adulthood and senior age. Stay on top of these nutritional requirements. Their German Shepherd parents grow very rapidly between the ages of four and seven months, making them susceptible to bone disorders. They do well on a high-quality, low-calorie diet that keeps them from growing too fast. Overfeeding your Shepsky and letting them pack on the pounds can cause joint problems, as well as other health conditions. Limit treats, keep them active, and serve them regular meals rather than leaving food available at all times. The main colors of Shepskies are brown, black, cream, white, red, and blue. Almost never solid, their coats are generally a mixture of two or more colors. They tend to shed quite a bit and you may need to pick up a RoboVac. These pups will require a few good brushes per week. Brushing will also help to spread the oils throughout the coat. These pups are well suited for cold weather. Their Siberian Husky parentage is straight from Russia, which is about as cold as it gets. Always teach children how to approach and touch dogs, and always supervise any interactions between dogs and young children to prevent any biting or ear or tail pulling on the part of either party. No dog should ever be left unsupervised with a child. The Shepsky is part pack dog and should be socialized early on. Introducing an adult Shepsky to a household with other pets can be more difficult if the German Shepherd parentage personality prevails and may require more work and professional trainers. Find out if this is the right dog for you by learning about their German Shepherd and Siberian Husky parents. Shepsky Rescue Groups It may be hard to find a breed-specific rescue for Shepskies because they are a mixed breed. However, you may want to try German Shepherd Dog or Siberian Husky breed-specific rescues, as they often care for mixes, as well. Here are some rescues you can try:. While herding dogs were being bred in Germany throughout the 19th century, the first formally recognized German Shepherd was registered by Max von Stephanitz in .The dog, named Horand von Grafrath, was the result of several generations of selective breeding to create a working dog ideal for herding sheep. The German Shepherd has a very forceful bite, and they are often mischaracterized as aggressive and likely to harm humans. However, while German Shepherds are responsible for a large number of canine attacks on humans, this is largely due to their popularity as pets and how abundant they are rather than any natural, breed-specific aggression. German Shepherds are actually considered great family pets, and they are known to be very good with children, though they can also be somewhat overprotective. .The Siberian Husky, in contrast, comes from Northeastern Asia where they were bred by the Chukchi people of Siberia to pull sleds. The result is an active breed with a lot of endurance that just loves to run. These dogs do very well in cold climates, and they were introduced to Alaska around as part of the Alaskan Nome Gold Rush. While you will still find these dogs working in some frozen terrains, they are now popular household pets. While they are energetic, friendly, and excellent with children, they are also troublemakers if not trained and socialized properly. They enjoy digging, chewing, jumping, and generally escaping any kind of confined space. Both dogs are of a similar size and have a wolf-like appearance, which is part of what made them prime candidates for crossbreeding. What Are Crossbred Dogs? It is worth noting that crossbred dogs, sometimes called designer dogs, are dogs that have been intentionally bred by mixing two or more recognized breeds. It is not a term for dogs bred accidentally or without purebred ancestors. However, crossbred dogs are not recognized as separate breeds in their own right, so their behavior and characteristics are not as predictable as purebred dogs. One of the advantages of purebred dogs is that it is relatively easy to predict their size, appearance, and temperament. Gerberian Shepsky Appearance As both German Shepherds and Siberian Huskies are medium-sized dogs with a wolf-like appearance, you can expect similar traits from their offspring. German Shepherds tend to be considered medium-to-large-sized dogs. Males typically measure 24 to 26 inches in height at the withers, and the females are usually a bit smaller at 22 to 24 inches. However, both sexes tend to look bigger than other dogs of a similar height, as they have very long necks. Siberian Huskies are a bit smaller, measuring between 19 and 24 inches and weighing between 35 and 60 pounds on average. The females are at the smaller end of the spectrum, and the males are at the larger end. As a result, you can expect Shepskies to be around the smaller range for German Shepherds, with males ranging from 22 to 25 inches and females ranging from 20 to 24 inches in height. When it comes to their weight, males tend to be between 50 to 80 pounds, while females weigh a bit less at 40 to 70 pounds. Shepsky puppies tend to have a distinctive wolf-like appearance, with pointed ears and long noses inherited from both parents. Their eyes will either be brown or blue, and some individuals might have the distinctive dual eye color often associated with huskies. Both parent breeds have a coat ideal for colder climates, so this is something that can be expected from their offspring. They typically have a dual coat with a dense, soft undercoat and another layer of more durable guard hairs on top. As German Shepherds can have either medium-to-long outer coats, the same is true of their Gerberian Shepsky offspring. They are almost never one solid color and will almost always be a mix of at least two different colors. One thing you can expect from all Shepsky coats is that they will be high shedding. Anyone with an allergy to dog hair should be wary about adopting a Shepsky! Gerberian Shepsky Temperament German Shepherds are highly intelligent dogs, and they are also highly motivated to please, which makes them one of the most trainable dog breeds out there. This quality is also why they are such good working dogs. Siberian Huskies are also very intelligent, but they are far more independent. They have been bred to make challenging decisions while running across dangerous arctic territories, so problem-solving is a necessary skill. As a result, while your Shepsky will almost certainly be a very intelligent dog, they might be a bit more troublesome to train than a German Shepherd. Alternatively, they might choose to entertain themselves by digging or chewing. Both breeds were created to spend a lot of time with humans, with Huskies often staying indoors with their families for warmth. This means they tend to bond quickly with their people and are very good with smaller family members though very small children should never be left unsupervised with any dog. While German Shepherds tend to have guard dog-like protective instincts, Huskies are pack animals and enjoy the company of other dogs. So, it is difficult to predict whether your Shepsky crossbreed will display more alpha-like behavior or be more submissive and play well with other pets. Remember, proper socialization training can go a long way when it comes to ensuring that they play well with others regardless of their temperament. Neither parent breed tends to bark excessively, but your Shepsky will get vocal if they want to alert you to a threat. Huskies tend to howl rather than bark, so keep in mind you might end up with a Shepsky with an adorable howl that may disturb the neighbors. If you do find yourself with a barker, read our guide on dealing with excessive or nuisance barking. Overall, expect your dog to be high energy, combining the herding instinct of a German Shepherd with the running mandate of a Siberian Husky. Caring For A German Shepherd Husky Mix Shepskies tend to be highly trainable, so an experienced dog owner should be able to train them at home using basic positive reinforcement training. Shepskies do best when they have a large backyard where they can spend their energy. Remember, they can be escape artists, which means they need a space that is securely fenced. Fences at least six feet tall are recommended. In addition to having plenty of space, Shepskies need a lot of exercise. They should be taken outside at least twice a day for a minimum of minutes at a time. Dog parks where they can run around off-leash are ideal, as it lets them stretch their legs and burn off excess energy. Just make sure they have been properly socialized before letting them loose. They are not ideal pets for people who spend most of the week in the office or traveling for work. Expect your Shepsky to engage in destructive behavior when they are feeling the stress of abandonment. Shepskies tend to have fairly dry coats. Huskies do not have oily coats, and they will often pass this trait down to their crossbred children. Avoid excessive washing to prevent drying them out further. Regular brushing is advisable to remove shedding hair, since these dogs tend to shed a lot. This is both for their comfort and to make cleanup around the home a little more manageable for you. Shepsky Health Concerns Shepskies have a relatively long lifespan for dogs of their size, and you can expect them to live for around 10 to 14 years. Shepskies can develop joint conditions, particularly in their elbows and hips, which can lead to pain and discomfort moving as they age. Adequate exercise and an orthopedic bed that allows them to take the pressure off their joints are both useful tools in preventing these issues. This unique crossbreed can also be prone to developing eye conditions such as canine glaucoma, corneal dystrophy, juvenile cataracts, and progressive retinal atrophy. Losing at least some of their eyesight in later life is a common concern. German Shepherd Husky mixes are also slightly more susceptible to developing epilepsy than most other breeds, though the condition is still relatively rare. Medications exist to help manage this condition. This can be prevented with regular cleaning and maintenance. You might be able to find a Gerberian Shepsky in a local shelter to adopt for a small fee, or you can opt to find a dedicated Shepsky breeder. Do Gerberian Shepskies shed a lot? Yes, German Shepherd Husky mixes shed a lot, and there is no getting around it. Both parent breeds have a thick winter coat that is prone to shedding, so this is a common characteristic in their offspring. If you are looking for a medium-sized low shedding dog, consider something with the Poodle breed in the mix, such as a Labradoodle or Goldendoodle. Poodles have a low-shedding coat that they typically pass on to their crossbred offspring. Do German Shepherd Husky mixes smell? Many Huskies pass on their low-oil coat to their crossbred offspring. If you do adopt a Shepsky, remember not to bathe your dog too regularly. The lack of oil can make them prone to having dry skin, and excessive washing can exacerbate this problem. Do Shepskies get cold? Siberian Huskies were bred to deal with extreme cold, and German Shepherds also have a thick coat to deal with colder temperatures. This means their offspring are very well insulated against the cold, and you will almost never have to worry about them being uncomfortable in colder temperatures. Overheating, however, can be an issue, so always carry water when you go out. You will probably find that your Shepsky prefers to relax in cool, shady areas. What is an Alusky? This is a very popular designer breed, as they often have distinctive black and white patterning as well as an overall wolf-like appearance. What dog breeds are commonly mixed with Huskies? As well as German Shepherds, you will find a number of other dog breeds that make a good mix with a Husky. The Verdict On Shepskies If you are looking for a fun and energetic dog that will make a great addition to a boisterous and adventurous family, then a German Shepherd Husky mix can be a great choice. Shepskies are very family-friendly pets that are loyal and highly trainable, but they also need lots of love and attention to keep them healthy and happy. They have a distinctive wolf-like appearance, but are far from aggressive and are generally very good with children. However, they are known for their delightful wolf-like howl. Remember that crossbreed dogs are always somewhat unpredictable in their appearance and temperament, so ensure that you meet the dog you plan on adopting first before deciding whether to add them to your family. Shepskies are best for people who have quite a bit of space for their dog to play and usually have someone to keep them company at home. You will enjoy training your Shepsky yourself if you have a bit of experience with dogs, but steer clear if you have allergies, as they are big shedders!
