Dog fighting was an especially popular pastime, and breeders of the time were fixated in crossbreeding Bulldogs and Terriers. They created a breed that could excel in both pit-fighting and ratting competitions. From these breeding attempts, a dog named Judge was born who is widely believed to be the very first of the Boston Terriers. He was purchased by an American and was brought back to their hometown of Boston, hence the origin of their name. Frenchton Size The Boston Terrier is the taller of the two breeds at inches. However, they are also the lighter of the two breeds, commonly weighing around pounds. French Bulldogs are slightly smaller at inches but can weight up to 28 pounds. As for the full grown Frenchton adult, they could potentially range in height from inches and weigh around pounds, depending on which parent they take after. If they take after the Frenchie, they may end up significantly more heavyset for their size. They have a very short tail which is commonly referred to as a nub. They have large, erect ears that are rather akin to a bat and bulging, prominent eyes. It is imperative when owning a breed with Achondroplasia to try and prevent any unnecessary wear and tear to their joints and back. Disallowing them to run up or down stairs, and preventing them from jumping on and off furniture can help with this. As for the French Bulldog, they are a bit lower to the ground than the Boston Terrier and are even more stocky and muscular. They have a short, fine and sleek coat that can come in white, fawn, or cream. Their coat can be patterned or a single color. They have similar ears to the Boston Terrier and the same prominent eyes. However, their face is a lot more wrinkled, and the Frenchie holds a lot more loose skin. They have a short tail, which may be straight or screwed. Typical Traits As the parent breeds share some characteristics it is very likely these will show within Frenchton puppies. The short and sleek coat, bat-like ears, flat face, and prominent eyes will most likely all be present within dogs of this cross. If the puppy takes after the Frenchie parent, they may end up with more loose skin, leading to a more wrinkly face and body. They require a standard weekly brush to remove any dead hair and keep them looking at their best. The Boston Terrier does shed a little more than the Frenchie, but both do not shed a lot in general. Both parent breeds have relatively low grooming requirements, and therefore the Frenchton dog will likely have low requirements too. However, it is recommended to regularly clean the wrinkles and skin folds. These areas are prone to infection and irritation. Temperament of the Boston Terrier French Bulldog Mix Despite their history as a fighting dog, the Boston Terrier is a friendly and bright dog with a gentlemanly air about them. Provided that they have been trained and socialized well. They can be quite the entertainer! As for the French Bulldog, they are smart and loving like the Boston Terrier but can be a bit warier around strangers. Therefore, early socialization is critical to curbing any potential negative behaviors. They tend to have a bit of a stubborn side and have a reputation as independent free-thinkers. But like the Boston Terrier, they love to entertain. Frenchton Health This cross does nothing to fix the severe health issues that come with being a Brachycephalic breed. This is due to a deformity bred into the dog that shortens the skull, leaving them with little to no muzzle. This is known as Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome. This is due to the amount of extra effort these dogs need to go through to breathe. The compromised breathing of these dogs is exacerbated further by hot weather and exercise. Therefore, if you own a Brachycephalic breed they must never be taken outside on a hot day. Exercise should always be kept light to moderate. Their difficulty breathing could eventually lead to a severe condition known as Laryngeal Collapse. Unfortunately, difficulty breathing is only one issue brought about by being a Brachycephalic breed. Issues with Eyes, Skin and Achondroplasia Due to the shortened skull, the eyes of Brachycephalic breeds bulge, and are poorly protected. They are much more prone to irritation, infection, and injury. Back problems can also be more common in these breeds, especially those with a screwed tail. These issues can potentially be debilitating and may require complex and expensive surgery to correct. Skin problems are also rampant within Brachycephalic breeds with a lot of loose skin. It can be easy for irritation and infection to occur with the skin folds of these breeds, like the French Bulldog. Many Brachycephalic dogs are unable to give birth naturally, due to the large heads of their puppies. Caesareans are usually necessary. Poor health is almost inevitable As both parent breeds are Brachycephalic, it is certain that puppies of this cross will be too. They will require a lot of care and could potentially be suffering from debilitating issues their entire lives. Despite the good intentions of this cross, it could potentially introduce a second structural health issue into Frenchton puppies. French Bulldogs have short, stout front legs. This is another deformity known as Achondroplasia that has been bred into them over time. This is another issue that may lead to joint problems such as Patellar Luxation or Hip Dysplasia. Or in more severe cases, back problems such as Intervertebral Disc Disease. Are Designer Dogs Healthier? Designer dogs have come under a lot of fire in recent years. With many concerns being raised about the health and welfare of these new breeds. There have also been accusations that breeders of designer dogs are just capitalizing on a fad for monetary gain. One study found that purebred dogs were at higher risk of genetic disorders in comparison to mutts. Another study in found that mixed breed dogs tended to live 1. This is suspected to be due to a concept known as Hybrid Vigor. Where increased genetic diversity promotes better health within a dog. Unfortunately, the fact that these breeds both suffer from the same health issues means that many of the potential benefits of mixing are not seen here. A short to medium length walk is usually enough for these two breeds. As both parents have similar energy levels, a daily walk will most likely be good enough for dogs of the Boston Terrier French Bulldog Mix. The Boston Terrier can be a breeze to train due to their love of pleasing their owners. As always, the best method is to provide positive, reward-based training. Depending on which parent the Frenchton takes after, they may end up easier or harder to train. If you are struggling to train your puppy, always enroll in puppy classes and let a professional do it. Potential breeders can be browsed online or found through more traditional avenues, such as newspaper advertisements. Positive feedback from previous customers and recognition from established breeding societies can be signs of a good breeder. Once you have found a puppy you may like, it is important to check over them. Finding a trustworthy breeder who can prove the genetic health of the parent dogs can help reduce the risk certain health issues. However, due to both parent breeds being Brachycephalic, this is a characteristic that will present itself in Frenchtons. Along with all the health issues it brings. As it is a structural issue that is a part of the conformation of both parent breeds, there is nothing you can do to avoid this. It is very important you consider this before purchasing any puppies. The Frenchton has a high risk of suffering from Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome. So you must consider the fact that puppies of this cross may not have the best quality of life and may require special care and expensive vet visits. What to check in a Frenchton puppy Are they breathing loudly, snorting and sniffling? And are their nostrils open and free-flowing, or are they pinched tight? Signs of compromised breathing can be a warning sign this puppy may have severe Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome. It is also worth considering avoiding any Frenchton puppies who have inherited the short stout legs of the French Bulldog, as this may lead to further health issues in the future. I was particularly concerned with breathing issues that these dogs so often has, and Deb was able to answer all of these questions with with ease and details since she has a deep experience in breeding Frenchies, and loves to do it. She has a fantastic working knowledge of genetics, and tracks her dogs health so well that she can use this data to produce great litters. Her process is impressive. We were able to give Deb our criteria about the kind of dog we were looking for, and what we were not. She immediately spoke about future litters she was planning that would fit our needs. Before we even got her home I knew we were going to need help training her. I have had dogs all my life, but never raised one from the ground up. I was impressed that she was able to keep class sizes small and keep us outside during this crazy time. Mira is now 4 months old and is able to sit, lay down, focus on my face, and so much more. She walks beautifully on a leash and is even learning to leave her geriatric cat sister alone most of the time. .We recently went on a family camping trip with 2 other dogs, 5 kids under 5, and lots of food sitting around. Mira was able to interact with the kids and dogs, as well as leave them alone when directed. Not once did she try to get at the food on the tables or help herself to hotdogs in kids hands. Without Deborah and her teaching, Mira would not be the happy, confident, mostly well behaved gal that she is. We were about to give up and return him to the breeder. Deborah was our second trainer, and she showed us a variety of new techniques to use with Bandit, and practiced them with us until all of us were doing the right things - she trains the people even more than the dogs! She worked with us at her home, in our home, and at different locations where Bandit could experience distractions while training, and it worked wonders. You will not be disappointed if you go to her for training! She had me come in for a consultation where she spent about 2 hours with me showing me techniques and tricks that would aid in Sparky's training. The expertise and patience she showed not just with Sparky, but with me as well had me sold. I am a disabled veteran who recently purchased a puppy with the goal of him eventually being my service dog. When Sparky was 5 months old I began looking for a "Board and Train" situation where he could learn the fundamentals. I called probably 15 different places looking for one that was affordable and would meet my needs. I talked with several trainers, and most of them seemed to lack the patience to help or were cost prohibitive. Sparky spent three weeks with Deborah and came home a different dog. He was well behaved, a little more mellow, and had the fundamentals needed to continue with training. Deborah spent a few extra hours with me as well, training me how to work with him. I am grateful for her patience with me too, because I know I am difficult. Deborah continues to address all of my concerns as we continue training at Good Citizen. I can tell that Sparky has a real love for her, which tells me about her love for him as well. If you are looking for a board and train program, I highly recommend Deborah and Good Citizen. Our dog, Daryl, is a 2 year old, high energy, very excitable pitbull rescue and he gets overwhelmed in busy social situations. Each class has many other types of dogs with varying levels of reactivity which was great exposure for Daryl. About 6 months after we went through the class the first time, we noticed he needed more intensive repetition to really get those skills to stick. We took the class a second time and we were able to get even more out of the class since we had set a good foundation in place. Daryl was so much more manageable during the second class so we really got to fine tune everything we learned. Now we can take him to places with a lot of people, other dogs, and feel confident that we can help him be his best. He certainly is a crowd pleaser and we get many compliments on his good behavior! I could not be more impressed. Because of Deborah and her staff's training, Albus, at just over 6 months old, constantly receives compliments on how well behaved and trained he is. Because the instruction he and I have received, I'm able to have him join me throughout most of my work days, fulfilling a dream of having a constant companion, not just a "home" dog. Since bringing Kuma there she has built up her confidence and she is now playing with big dogs which is something that terrified her before I brought her there. My pup wasn't much better at listening or having any kind of focus or calmness to him. I sought out other trainers in the area. I decided on a home trainer that had decent reviews. Costa is a Husky with a very stubborn mind. In only 4 sessions it's like I have a new dog! I even signed him up for doggie daycare and found that after a day of fun, supervised play that my pup is more focused to work at home on his training. Don't go anywhere else!! He has shown an incredible drive for upland game with a great nose. At five months he was finding and retrieving birds just as well as our more experienced dogs. Last week I was walking through a big field and all of a sudden Mater wasn't next to me. I called him and he came running over with a live pheasant in his mouth. We didn't shoot it. Actually he's our hunting party's first choice for finding a down bird in thick cover that the other dogs couldn't find. On another note he's been a very happy and energetic part of the family. Best friends with our little boy that just turned one he follows him all over waiting for a dropped piece of food. He's taken really well to all the training I've provided and we couldn't be happier. She is now in Adolescent II class which is more challenging, will work her brain--last week we were the only ones there only 3 in the morning class so we got a great private session with Nancy. We worked on Free Style moves and Saca really enjoyed it and picked the moves up quickly, except for a couple that are giving her trouble but she will get them. But she learned 9 new commands. We have been working with Freezy retrieving long-distant dummies with a launcher. Last week at first we just let Saca watch but then let her go and she took off like a rocket, only she did not come back to us but went to lie in shade with her treasure! But this weekend she did a couple of remarkable retrieves. Pat shot one out into some tall grass and she went past it but then started making short back and forth casts until she got! I have not done any casting with her so I was pretty amazed. Then Pat shot one in another direction, tall grass and forbs, but it went over the cedar fence into the front dog yard. So I walked up with her, went into the yard, lined up with the dummy and told her to fetch. At first she looked at me like "are you sure? She went past the dummy by about 5' but then caught its scent and whirled around, picked it up and brought it to me. She is a natural. Also a super lover. Dusty, owned by Dave and Kathy. Dusty is the best dog in the world! Kathy says I spoil him, I have to continually remind her that he poops peppermint sticks. I did have to agree with her that he was getting to big to be in bed with us anymore, but he's happy to have his own bed on the floor next to me. Dusty is incredibly smart, he learned to sit, shake hands, lay down, stay, and fetch with ease. I found out on accident that he's not afraid of guns, I shot a coyote with a rifle not realizing that he was standing near me, it didn't bother him at all.Dusty loves the water, he has his own little swimming pool on our deck. He loves to ride in the cab of the truck with me, he still sits on the arm rest in the middle so he can see everything, although it won't be long before his head hits the roof. Dusty has all of his puppy shots and will be getting neutered sometime this Winter. Our Veterinarian loves Dusty and has offered to take care of him if we need to go out of town, although I would probably never leave him with anyone but family. Risky loves being outside. Indoors we call her the "stuffed" dog as she just lays around not an exaggeration. No chewing, jumping, destructive behavior etc. .We puppy proofed the house but there apperantly was no need. If it doesn't involve birds or retrieving life, according to Risky, is just not worth living. She goes to daycare three to four days a week and has several good friends including Clover, a Black Russian terrier and Susie, a Chesapeake. All three puppies were born within 10 days of each other. Risky is clearly the smallest of the three by about half but she puts up a good fight an is the scrappiest of the three. So at daycare she is much more active. She has been field training with us in the evenings. Her longest mark has be about 25 yards. Go out and getting it has been excellent.She is now on a long check chord. If she is on the chord she knows that she can not run off so she is compliant and clearly quite bright to be leash wise already. I will say her dog skills are incredible. Since she was so good when she came home about not nipping or jumping she fit right in with our dog pack and everyone accepted her right away. She is a great addition to our family! Choral, Everything is going really well. Clark and I arrived around 9pm on Saturday night. Thankfully, our drive was uneventful and he was a trooper. He sat in his kennel for the majority of the trip, occasionally sitting on my sister, Hannah's, lap instead. I think that this time spent in the kennel was a really great potty training opportunity; he let us know each time he had to go. We didn't have one accident! We took frequent stops to play, so the drive took much longer than I had originally anticipated. We had great success introducing Augustus to Clark, considering that Augustus is not accustomed to sharing us. He is just like an only child! Gus has been so cautious when playing with Clark; he is very aware of how small he is. Clark has really taken to Gus, so we will have to be really diligent to avoid Clark considering Gus the pack leader. John is absolutely in love; he isn't any happier than while watching Clark run with his nose to the ground! The training begins this week; John has already brought home some feathers from a recent hunting trip. I think that I may have mentioned this in my last email, but we are so impressed by Clark's inquisitiveness and fearlessness. He will likely take patience and consistency to train because he is so willful, but we are up to the challenge and so glad to have such an intelligent, eager, and affectionate pup. He has this great expression when he is watching us, where he cocks his head and furrows his eyebrows; he is such a little man! Right now, my favorite Clark activity, is our early morning walk, just the two of us. He prances along, so proud of himself, as though I am giving him complete freedom to follow me; I'm not sure that he has discovered that he is attached by a leash and that I am actually the one calling the shots! We are now fully transitioned from his original food to the Eukanuba. He hasn't had an upset stomach and his stool is entirely solid, so I think that we have successfully gotten over any hump generated by the stress of the change of environment. And as it turns out, there are still a handful of dedicated breeders producing world class hunting poodles in North America that are finding their way into our duck blinds and wild bird covers. Advertisement History and Development There is much debate surrounding the origin of the standard poodle. Despite the common claim of it being French, most of the evidence points to Germany. But their real utility began when the matchlock saw popular use in and later with the invention of the flintlock. Both firearms revolutionized duck shooting for market hunters and the like. In this new era of water and gun, the poodle thrived, spreading across Europe in the following centuries. They were swallowed up by England channel hunters in the early s and were favored for a long time by market hunters across the North and Baltic sea. The hunting poodle faced challenges from the beginning in North America. The American Kennel Club AKC unfavorably placed the poodle in the non-sporting group from the start, where it still remains. The Canadian Kennel Club CKC also grouped standard poodles into the non-sporting group in , after only briefly having them in the sporting group. This was no doubt in part due to the introduction of the much smaller, non-sporting, miniature poodle. Modern Hunting Poodles Many of the same qualities that have allowed standard poodles to dominate competitive obedience events for decades are also traits that distinguish them as a gun dog. Poodles are recognized to be one of the smartest of all K-9 breeds, and that intelligence has serious benefits in the field. Another poodle trait that makes them so successful in working capacities is their eagerness to please. In fact, they do much better without it. Size and Considerations The standard hunting poodle is around pounds for males and pounds for females, standing inches at the shoulder. With this tall, athletic frame, they are light-footed and capable of great endurance in the field. They have keen noses, and their natural intelligence can nourish some great cover identification and bird-finding ability with proper exposure. They are easy keepers around the home. They are very family-oriented and want to be close to their handler. Poodles are completely hypoallergenic and do not shed, but their coat does need the appropriate trim and some maintenance. If you want to consider a standard poodle for your next gun dog, make sure to go see the parents work yourself. You should also watch how the dog handles. Ensure that the breeder is being responsible in health checks and conformation. Observe the dog around the home. Watch its temperament around children. You should expect to see what you want yourself in a gun dog. With a bit of research and the right breeder, finding a good hunting poodle is a completely achievable target for any wingshooter. First, although considered a single breed, the poodle has three sizes: standard over 15 inches at the withers , miniature 10 to 15 inches and toy under 10 inches. Even the most gullible hunter cannot picture a toy or even a miniature poodle tangling with an outraged, crippled Canada goose. Granted, some folks do hunt miniatures on smaller birds, but in general when we speak of hunting poodles, we mean only the standard size. Second, those outlandish dog show coifs that move us to mirth prevent us from visualizing such a dog with all that hair actually hunting anything--except possibly a place on the couch. I'll admit to getting an occasional few minutes of entertainment listening to some dog show handler who has never hunted in his life explain how those fancy trims protect the dog when retrieving in water. In fact, those who hunt their poodles clip them down pretty close to the skin all over, so all that hair is no problem in either water or cover. Advertisement Third, poodles have a reputation as circus dogs, trick dogs, great entertainers--dogs that do humiliating things no self-respecting retriever would even consider. Truth is, the poodle simply has more talent--more smarts, if you will--than most other breeds, so they can do much more than "just" hunt. They love to be trained, love to entertain and love to please, so they will do anything the boss really wants them to do, whether in the circus ring or duck blind. From the Middle Ages, Europeans have always considered the standard poodle a hunting dog. According to Canadian breed historian Emily Cain, Europeans categorized it as a spaniel. However, the French breed name, caniche, comes from chien canard, or "duck dog," so they have also classified it a retriever. In , when CKC recognized the toy poodle, they put both sizes into their non-sporting group. Since , when UKC initiated their retriever hunt tests, several standard poodles have earned the highest titles awarded in those tests. Largely due to the persistent but gentle prodding of poodle breeder and hunter Dr. Grace Blair, in AKC permitted the standard poodle to participate in retriever hunting tests. Since then, several poodles have earned the highest titles awarded in those tests. Clearly, the standard poodle has excellent credentials as a working retriever. Hunters all over the country use them successfully in hunting, and run them just as effectively in various retriever hunt tests. However, most hunting poodles stand much taller, with males 24 to 26 inches and females 22 to 24 inches. Such males weigh 45 to 60 pounds; such females weigh 40 to 50 pounds. These dogs are tall and lithe rather than short and stocky. Being lean and muscular, they have boundless energy and great stamina. Being highly athletic whence comes their trick-dog image , they move with attractive grace and style. Now for the typical hunter's No. The coat may be any of several solid colors, most commonly black, gray, brown, apricot and white. Notably, this coat doesn't shed. That makes it every homemaker's favorite among canine coats. No dog hairs on the rug, sofa, bed or wherever. Then, too, this coat is hypoallergenic, which makes it the choice of dog lovers who are allergic to breeds that shed. Since it doesn't shed, if left untrimmed the coat will grow continuously. When it gets long enough, the fur braids itself into long cords that drag on the floor. Thus, every poodle must be trimmed regularly, which is a time-consuming job, even for a professional groomer, and an expensive job for amateurs who choose not to trim their own poodles. But--and for hunters this is a most important but--no law, rule or directive requires a hunter to keep his poodle in those outlandish dog show trims that make the dog look like a sissified male lion. Au contraire, the hunter may, can and should keep his poodle's coat trimmed down to somewhere around one inch long all over. At that length it curls tightly up against the skin. Although trimming a poodle this way takes time and effort, it requires neither tonsorial skill nor artistic talent. Of course, it must be done frequently, say once a month. Thusly trimmed, the coat protects the dog in all but bone-chilling water. It will also protect him from upland briars and brambles. It does pick up burrs, but the boss can easily pluck them out with a dog comb or rake. To help slide them out easily, some hunters first spray a little cooking oil on each burr.
