teddy bear bernedoodle puppies for sale
Great for active families Sheds a moderate amount of hair Excellent watchdog Heavy shedders during the changing seasons Will protect you without question Not considered an apartment dog breed. If not properly cared for this breed can become destructive and difficult to handle. The German Shepherd may be one of the best breeds out there, but without proper care and training, it can be a handful. But prices can vary depending on the breeder. When looking for a breeder, it is important to set your budget before you start searching for a puppy. If you have an exact price in mind, this will help you eliminate breeders that are outside of your price range. The GSDCA has made it easy for you by providing their members with the option of putting their kennel names on the list, but not all breeders are willing to do this. Therefore, if you find that there are no GSDCA member kennels in your local area, it may still be possible for you to receive information from them about other breeders or clubs in Rhode Island. Another way to find a responsible breeder is to ask your veterinarian for a referral. If you do not currently have a veterinarian, you can always ask the staff at your local pet store to help point you in the right direction. This will allow you to see the parents of the puppies, as well as the living conditions of the puppies themselves. You should never purchase a puppy from a breeder who cannot provide you with this information. When meeting with the breeder, be sure to ask them questions about their dogs such as: How long have they been breeding German Shepherds? Do they have any health clearances for the sire and dam of the litter? Are their dogs registered with a national breed club? What type of guarantee do they offer on their puppies? Visiting your potential breeder is a crucial step in selecting a puppy. You can get vital information from a visit to the premises. Questions to Ask Ask for References from Your German Shepherd Breeder in Rhode Island When you are meeting with the breeder, be sure to ask if they have any references that you can contact. Most breeders should be more than willing to provide you with this information in order to secure a sale. Remember, the more information that you have about other people who have purchased puppies from them in the past, the better your chances are of receiving quality assistance when it comes time to take care of your puppy when you bring him or her home. References will also help you determine if the breeder is reputable or not. Ask Your Rhode Island German Shepherd Breeder if You Can Meet Past Customers Most responsible breeders will be more than happy to put you in touch with past customers so that you can ask them questions about their experience with the breeder. Be sure to ask the following questions: How was the communication between you and the breeder? Did they provide you with any health clearances for the puppy? Was the breeding stock healthy? Were the puppies well socialized? What type of training did the breeder provide? Did you have any problems with your puppy after you took him or her home? As with any breeders, you should always ask where they get their puppies checked out. You do not want a breeder that cannot give you references to other breeders or people who have bought from them in the past. A reputable breeder will be able to give these references without thought because of all the people they have shared their puppies with in the past. Another point, when looking for German Shepherd Breeders in Rhode Island make sure you find out how many litters a year they produce. A good breeder will only have two to four litters per year. If they have a good veterinarian, ask if you can also use them. Some people have a hard time finding good veterinarians and if the breeder you are interested in already has a good one, it might be in your best interest to use them. This is especially true if you live out of state and will not be able to take your puppy to the vet for its first round of shots. For example, do they breed for money or do they breed because they love the breed and want to improve it? A good breeder will never put money over the health and well-being of their dogs. They will also never sell their puppies to pet stores. Another red flag is if the breeder tries to rush you into buying a puppy. They should also be willing to let you come and visit their facility as well as meet the parents of the puppies. Legitimate breeders will never require this type of payment as it is usually a sign that they are trying to scam people out of their money. All reputable breeders will screen their puppies for genetic health issues and will be happy to share this information with you. This can help you determine if the puppy is likely to develop any health problems down the road. Can you trust this person with your money and your new puppy? The next thing you want to consider is who will take care of your dog? This means putting away any small items that the puppy could chew on and making sure that all the cords are hidden. This will help them get on a regular schedule and prevent any accidents from happening in the future. Start working on potty training immediately, otherwise it can be difficult to housebreak a German shepherd later in life. When you bring your new pup home give them plenty of time to explore their new surroundings before getting down to business. Reward them with a treat when they go potty in the right spot and never punish them for having an accident. This will only make things worse and could potentially cause some behavioral problems down the road. German Shepherds are a great breed for people who have plenty of space and are willing to put in the time to train them. Happy dog, happy life. I love animals and love helping people adopt a pet. It all started when attending Missouri State University and I began volunteering at an animal shelter. Our breeding stock come from show rated and titled West German Sieger show lines. All of our dogs tested negative for all 11 German Shepherd specific genetic conditions including DM Degenerative Mylopathy and all additional genetic conditions. We breed for sound tempermants, character, structure, along with dark black and red pigmentation. All of our puppies are hand raised from birth in the home. References Dear Walter and Joanne Robert is a wonderful dog! He has fit in nicely here at the house and loves to go to the beach. He sleeps in our bed room and is never anxious to go out in the night. In between walks and the beach we go to for car rides to the office and the parks. We walk at least 3 miles a day and take lots of car trips. Hotels are no problem. I bring food, water, and a dog bed for him to sleep on. Thank you so much for getting us this great dog. My baby boy is just so curious about her and she is so gentle with him. My older dog is in heaven to have a playmate again. Hope all is well with you and your beautiful dogs. When I walk into the training class with her, people just stop and stare. She really is a beautiful dog. Talk to you soon. She has turned out to be a beautiful family dog and I have worked very hard to socialize her with people, children, cats and horses. We have 11 horses and my daughter, Rebecca, is a licensed riding instructor and Olga is very good with her students. I have been very busy running my business in North Attleboro, helping with the farm and all. When that is complete I would like to breed Olga as I did not spay her. I would like your advice when it comes to that. Thank you, Polly Schaefer. Mother dog birthed 11 pups but sadly seven puppies did not survive the house fire. Their mom and these four puppies were left at this house, no food, no water, and no medical attention for the poor burned mother. They had been on their own for several weeks before we became aware of them. They had lived off people coming by looking at the damage of the fire. Thankfully some left food on for them to eat. Predators were lurking around the remains of the home which forced mom and her surviving pups to go upstairs in a house that was extremely dangerous. This and a super busy Highway cause great stress. We knew we had to act fast to save them. Mother suffered burns and we believe it was due to her trying to save her babies. From what we have learned is that mom has never really had a home or easy life. She finally found a home and it burned to the ground. When they came into rescue they were not acclimated to people. All four have come along way since and love to be around people. All they want is love and affection. Miles, the runt, is the most shy of the four. Whereas Hugo thinks he is the Boss and in charge! Mavis is the easy going pup. Just laid back and happy just being Mavis! She needs a shirt with a peace sign on it. He is a character for sure. He keeps everyone entertained. Loves to play and wants everyone involved in the doggie games! They are all just sweet happy pups. Their owner was hospitalized and jailed with no intention or possibility of going back to try to recover anything. They just need a family that will keep them safe and give them love. But these puppies can become anything that they need to be. Hugo biggest. Then Ottis. Then Mavis. And shy Miles is the smallest. Half German Shepherd. All spayed and neutered. Vaccinations complete. Healthy and ready. Each dog will come fully vetted. Price also includes transportation and a Health Certificate as required by law. There is a .The remainder of the fee will be paid once you pick up the dog. Naturally the .It will be refunded if for any reason you decide you do not want to adopt, unless the transport has already left. To get a application please go to: saveapreciouspaw gmail. Beneath the curly, hypoallergenic coat is an elegant athlete and companion for all reasons and seasons. All three varieties have the same build and proportions. At dog shows, Poodles are usually seen in the elaborate Continental Clip. Most poodle owners prefer the simpler Sporting Clip, in which the coat is shorn to follow the outline of the squarely built, smoothly muscled body. All Poodles can be trained with great success, as they are highly trainable and very intelligent. They do have a weaker bone structure than some other small breeds, but are still a tough little dog. They make wonderful pets because they love people so much! A distinct breed with the right mental stimulation can properly interact and is loved by young children. Their short coats look like velvet against your hand when you stroke them. There are many new colors coming out with advances in breeding and DNA technology. Some breeders will only breed traditional colors, whereas we breed for more specialty and exotic colors. Our main stock is health tested and cleared and the pups make excellent pets. There are quite a few champions in the pedigrees and they're laid back compared to some bloodlines. The Standard Poodle began its development as a retrieving water dog more than years ago. With a crisp, curly coat as protection against the elements, superlative swimming ability, and off-the-charts intelligence, the Poodle was, and still is, a magnificent retriever. Hunters wanted their dogs to have free range of movement in the water, but they also wished to protect vital areas of the anatomy from the cold. They shaved the legs, neck, and tail but left the chest, hips, and leg joints coated. The rounded tufts on the legs, hips, and tail tip are called pompons. Note the spelling: Cheerleaders have pom-poms; Poodles have pompons. Elegant Poodles of the Standard and Miniature varieties found favor among the nobles of France and, eventually, all of Europe. An excellent nose brought the Poodle additional work as a truffle hunter. The Standard was bred down to the Miniature. The Toy was first bred in America, in the early 20th century, as a city-dwelling companion dog. Well-bred specimens of each variety are exact replicas of each other and are bred to the same standard. After a puppy is reserved its is our goal to make the update within minutes with few exceptions outside holidays and unforeseen events. You can be confident the available puppies and their pictures shown are accurate and up to date.

How do you breed for a healthier English Bulldog? Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other breeders from improving the health of the English Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes the unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities. What are the steps of your adoption process if I am located in New Hampshire? Check out our available English Bulldog Puppies page. At times, we have available puppies but almost always have a waiting list as well. A quick look at our available puppies is the starting point to begin the process. Send us an email or give us call .If approved to adopt one of our puppies you are welcome to place a deposit to hold until your puppy is ready to go home. Greetings from the Wysongs! I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. Use tab to navigate through the menu items. I have been breeding English Bulldogs for over 20 years. I found that bulldogs are full of personality — each dog unique unto itself. They act like little clowns and definitely make you laugh at their antics. Their loyalty, devotion and genuine love for people captured my heart. The rest is history! I am a Breeder. I do not own a kennel where dogs are bred indiscriminately and kept in a drafty place in an outside facility that resembles a shed-like building. Typically, only litters are produced each year with each litter producing puppies. My focus is to keep the quantity of puppies down to a minimum so I can concentrate on the best breeding possible. Quality starts with the breeding pair. Each dog is AKC Registered. They are selected for breeding based on their health, appearance, and temperament. Females have a maximum of litters determined by veterinarian recommendations. When one of my females is not expected to have more puppies, she is ready to be adopted by a loving, new family. Personal care is given to each puppy to assure its health and happiness. They are kept warm in winter, air-conditioned in the summer, and their environment is kept exceptionally clean. For the first two weeks of their lives bulldog puppies have to be kept in a room where the temperature is maintained at 85 degrees. They can chill or over heat quickly so maintaining a constant temperature is critical. At approximately 3 weeks of age they build up in their anatomy where they can control their own temperature. But until then I constantly monitor the temperature in their whelping boxes for their well-being. However, I am with the mother every time she nurses to assure that she tends to her babies equally and feeds them all sufficiently. Puppies are born with their eyelids shut and they cannot see for approximately 3 weeks. To assure they do not wander too far from their heating source or get in trouble, I am with them constantly. My puppies are crate and paper trained. As you can tell, I get very little sleep. My main concern is that these babies get off to a good start so they can grow into outstanding adult dogs. Care of Bulldogs In general, adult English bulldogs are easy to care for. They need regular feeding in the morning and at evening some dogs require special food to prevent allergies , light exercise once a day, and daily facial cleaning to prevent fold dermatitis. During my care a licensed veterinarian performs physical exams on all puppies. They are kept up-to-date on all vaccines. As a new owner care of your bulldog will require regular vet visits to assure their continuing good health. We offer stud service using one of my male dogs as a sperm donor. We also offer boarding services for bulldogs that have been purchased from Bayside Bulldogs NH. We just love her! Thank You so much! My friend is looking for a bulldog of his own because he adores Dudley. Let us know when your next litter is due. Our bed is too high off the ground for him. So Ed put a mattress on the living room floor and they both slept on it. When we take him outside we just want to stay with him all the time. She comforts me and she is such a ball of fun. There is nothing like owning a bulldog because they have such a unique personality, are very loving, caring, and they are an amazing breed. She is so sweet! We are so happy to have her join the family! He is now over 30 pounds and in Puppy Kindergarten. He is completely adorable, cute as they come, very smart but also very bulldog! We are extremely happy to have Tripp in our lives. Even though it's been a year since Winston has been gone, it has left a big whole in my heart. We bought Winston from you in September, .At the time my husband was terminal ill and died that same year in December. My husband, knowing he was dying, did not want me to be alone in the big house. Winston was an amazing dog; he gave me comfort and lots of love! He led a very healthy life. That is why I only want one of your bulldogs! I will see you in for another wonderful companion. A first Generation F1 Goldendoodle is half golden retriever, half poodle. Deeper generations involve crossing a Goldendoodle back to the parent breed. An F1B Goldendoodle consists of a Goldendoodle crossed with a poodle. These are generally hypoallergenic and non-shedding. Goldendoodles are gentle and affectionate dogs with an easy-going temperament. They are extremely intelligent, friendly, and easy to train. According to the Goldendoodle Association of North America, they rank in the top 5 most intelligent dogs. The golden retriever ranks 4 and Poodle 2 on most intelligent dog list. They are also very social. Hypoallergenic and Low to Non-Shedding. Hypoallergenic means, below-average allergy causing symptoms. Some people are allergic to pet dander. Pet dander consists of specks of skin that are released from dogs that shed. This can cause allergies in some people. Symptoms would include, a runny nose, sneezing, coughing, itchy eyes, and skin irritation on humans. Because Goldendoodles are a mixed breed, the poodle genes limit any dander that would normally be released from a golden retriever. Dennis Anderson stribdennis I had a friend whose last wish was that he wouldn't die without a Labrador by his side. He didn't mention his wife and kids but maybe they made honorable mention. On the overnight flight from Miami to Buenos Aires during his annual Argentina duck hunts he'd buy a seat in first class for his dog to sit alongside him. So, the two were tight. I was thinking about this other day while walking a 4-month-old black Lab puppy in the half-light of early morning. A couple of older Labradors were also with me, 2-year-old littermates, one dark yellow and one light, Rowdy and Fella. But it was the puppy that demanded my attention, cartwheeling helter-skelter as he did and making a break for horse poop when I wasn't looking. An argument can be made, and my wife has made it, that I didn't need another dog. Then again no one really needs kids, either. But you throw your hat in the ring and before you know it, they're the reason you get out of bed every morning, albeit earlier than you might have liked. Years ago, I needed a puppy fix while eating breakfast at a truck stop in Atlanta. I had a Freightliner parked outside pulling a foot drop frame and was due to leave for Boston the next morning. An ad in the local sheet trumpeted golden retriever puppies for sale and soon I was pulling up to an expansive Cape Cod in a tony subdivision and peeling off a wad of greenbacks in exchange for a promising little tail-wagger. Housebreaking at times included holding the little fellow out the truck window while I idled in line at toll booths. I named the pup Boogie because I liked the yell of it. You do the best you can. Dad was a good retriever trainer who advised me a long time ago that a dog should never be bragged about unless it's dead or 2, miles away. He might have stolen this from a professional trainer because it's the kind of thing someone who hangs around dogs all the time would say. Risky Business Ruby, a vintage female black Labrador owned by Gary Thompson of Plymouth, was a pound National Retriever Champion whose guts, brains and athleticism were unparalleled. But sometimes when she was off course slightly on a long mark or blind she would just keep going, over hill and dale, believing for sure in the next county or the next, a bird could be found. Say what you will, but acquiring a puppy exposes the most dog-eared cynic's vein of optimism. Horse trainers drawl that no one ever committed suicide with a 2-year-old in the barn, believing the youngster could be better than all the colts and fillies that came before it, a trophy on the mantel. So, too, I was thinking, perhaps, with this new puppy, watching him chase shadows but imagining a red-carpet future in which other dogs feted us with standing ovations. OK, the chewing would have to stop, also the digging and the generalized indifference to my whereabouts except at feeding time or when he collapses at day's end, wanting, finally, to hug. Sick for months, and weak, Buck nonetheless won an all-age stake at 2 years old, and at 3 was sold to John Olin, the ammunition virtuoso of Winchester Olin fame. Cotton Pershall was Olin's trainer, and it was he who took possession of Buck after he had won an open stake, paws down, in Winona. Pershall wasn't as high on Buck as OIin was. Nearly flawless through 10 series, Buck concluded his performance with a yard water retrieve, a feat that stirred the imagination of all who saw it, not only about Buck's infinite capacity to understand, and to please. But, potentially, to any dog's. Like a lot of hunting dogs at the time, Boze rode in the trunk. One early morning, my dad, my older brother and I were duck hunting, and I was told to wait in Dad's car with Boze in the trunk while Dad and my brother set decoys in a slough over a nearby hill. But soon impatience got the best of me and I sprang Boze from the trunk, appended him to my wrist with a leash and led him to the crest overlooking the slough. It was then Boze saw a decoy fly from Dad's hand and bolted in the direction of the fake duck with me in tow, twisting like a rag doll. When I hit the fetid water, I skipped atop it briefly. But in short order I sank. The other early morning I was wondering if this new puppy might someday pull a stunt like that, or if instead, like King Buck, from meager beginnings he might rise to doggy stardom. So far, he's kind of incorrigible, I get that. But he can "Sit'' and "Stay,'' and on occasion he's not indifferent to me, not totally anyway. So, there's promise. Mark Twain said people are lucky because entry to heaven goes by favor, adding that if it went by merit, we'd all stay out while our dogs got in. Somewhere in there is the reason my friend wanted a Labrador by his side when he died. He got his wish, and I hope I do, too. Goldendoodles can be miniature, medium-sized, or standard. These sizes were developed by breeding a purebred Golden Retriever with a purebred Poodle. And, we know that Poodles come in toy, miniature, and standard sizes. The medium-sized Goldendoodle is among the most popular. This is because this Doodle is not too large like its Golden Retriever parent breed, and not too small like the Miniature Poodle parent breed. Taking each Goldendoodle size into consideration, we have come up with three growth charts. The Mini Goldendoodle designer dog is a result of crossing a purebred Golden Retriever and a purebred Miniature Poodle. So, crossing such a large dog with a small dog will result in an interesting Mini Goldendoodle combination. Mini Goldendoodle puppy growth chart Miniature Goldendoodle puppies are the cutest little animals you will see! At birth, the Miniature Goldendoodle weighs only one pound! Light as a feather during its first days, it soon becomes slightly bigger. At two weeks of age, the weight of a newborn Mini Goldendoodle doubles — now it weighs two pounds! The period between three and eight weeks is when its puppy teeth have already emerged, and the Mini Goldendoodle puppy starts being more vocal and restless. A puppy growth spurt is noticeable around this time. At eight weeks of age, the Mini Goldendoodle puppy will weigh between four and nine pounds. This is the time when breeders prepare their Mini Goldendoodle puppies for new homes. It seems that the Mini Goldendoodle puppy keeps growing and growing! When the Mini Goldendoodle hits 12 weeks of age, this little puppy weighs around 12 pounds. The following months add two to three pounds to its weight. Just before reaching adulthood, between six and eight months of age, the Mini Goldendoodle puppy will weigh 24 to 26 pounds. Mini Goldendoodle adult size At around 11 to 13 months, you will notice a growth stagnation. Congratulations, your Mini Goldendoodle has reached its adult size! An adult Mini Goldendoodle weighs between 15 and 35 pounds. Mini Goldendoodles measure around 13 to 20 inches in height. Mini Goldendoodles are considered adult dogs at the age of one year. This is just an estimate because it can differ from dog to dog. As the name implies, this is a medium-sized dog. Think of the Medium Goldendoodle as a fluffy, living teddy bear that you can cuddle with every day! Read more about the size of a Medium Goldendoodle, and how big this adorable designer dog can get. Medium Goldendoodle puppy growth chart Medium Goldendoodle puppies are born just as small as every other puppy. These little guys weigh around one pound at birth. Your new puppy will already weigh around two to three pounds after two weeks of age. At eight weeks of age, the Medium Goldendoodle puppy weighs around nine to 15 pounds. After the eight-week period, things start to escalate real fast. By that, I mean your Medium Goldendoodle puppy starts growing faster than bamboo! At 12 weeks of age, this little puppy already weighs 20 pounds. Each month, the Medium Goldendoodle puppy will gain around five pounds, depending on its diet and other factors we will get to those later in the article. Upon reaching six months of age, the Medium Goldendoodle puppy starts taking it slow. Its growth rate delays. The puppy is still growing, but not as fast as it was just a month ago. So, at six months of age, this little pooch should weigh between 30 and 34 pounds. Comparison-wise, Medium Goldendoodle puppies are usually four to five pounds heavier than Mini Goldendoodle puppies. Medium Goldendoodle adult size Adult Medium Goldendoodle dogs are considered mature dogs that have reached their full size. What characteristics and size these puppies will inherit depends greatly on both parent dog breeds. Sometimes, the parent breeds can be smaller, so their Doodle offspring will also inherit the gene for a smaller size. The Medium Goldendoodle puppy reaches adulthood within the first 12 months of age, when it weighs between 30 and 45 pounds on average. Its height is between 15 and 20 inches, making it the perfect dog for every environment. There is also a gender difference in terms of size, so expect male dogs to be larger than female dogs. They are, in fact, the largest of the three Goldendoodle types. The Golden Retriever parent falls under the large breed of dogs. Although thinner and more athletic, the Standard Poodle also belongs to the large breeds. This means that the Standard Goldendoodle will inherit the large size from both parent breeds. Standard Goldendoodle puppy growth chart Standard Goldendoodle puppies are born slightly larger than their miniature and medium counterparts. Newborn puppies weigh around a pound to a pound and a half. By two weeks of age, they have already doubled in size, starting their growing up journey. You know how large breeds grow very fast — this is also the case with the Standard Goldendoodle. Its eight-week birthday brings more pounds! Three months in, the Standard Goldendoodle puppy gains four to five more pounds. After 12 weeks of age, the Standard Doodle puppy will weigh 35 pounds. Within the first six months, this puppy will weigh approximately 45 pounds. This is the weight of the adult, medium-sized Goldendoodle. Wait until it reaches its adulthood. Standard Goldendoodle adult size Most large breeds reach adulthood a bit later than the small- and medium-sized dogs. Some may keep growing and will stop when they reach two years of age. But, mostly, these dogs mature within the first 12 or 14 months of age. This pooch grows up into a very big and cuddly teddy bear! A full-grown Standard Goldendoodle will stand at 18 to 22 inches tall, and will be as heavy as 45 to 60 pounds. Goldendoodle Growth Chart: Male Vs. Female Just like in all mammals, we notice a difference in size between the male adult dogs and the females. Considering this dog breed is a mix of a larger dog the Golden Retriever and a small, medium, and large breed the Poodle , the Goldendoodle will vary in size. It seems that male puppies grow faster. But, this is not necessarily true. Male Goldendoodle puppies are born larger than females. Adult male Goldendoodles are heavier and taller than adult female Goldendoodles. In contrast to that, the female Miniature Goldendoodles weigh 15 to 20 pounds, and their height averages around 15 inches. Adult Medium Goldendoodle males weigh 45 pounds on average, and measure from 20 to 22 inches in height, depending on the parent breed to which it leans more towards. However, female Medium Goldendoodles are a few inches shorter — 18 to 20 inches to be precise. Although males are larger and heavier, females still weigh surprisingly close. The female Medium Goldendoodle will weigh between 30 and 40 pounds on average. Some full-grown males weigh around 50 pounds, but if they are larger, they might even weigh up to a whopping 90 pounds. The female Standard Goldendoodles, on the other hand, are lighter, weighing around 40 to 45 pounds. The female adult dogs are also a bit shorter, reaching 17 to 20 inches in height. Each living organism needs environmental factors such as the sun, water, and air, in order to live a normal life. Little puppies are very fragile organisms. That being said, they require a lot of care. Negligence in terms of proper housing and feeding practices can lead to abnormal growth. Genetics The reason why we put this factor in the first place on our list is that genes modify everything: physical characteristics, personality traits, and, of course — size! This means that the breeders can never surely know what to expect when combining two different dog breeds. The Goldendoodle puppy might inherit the larger size of the Golden Retriever parent breed, or if the Poodle parent is a larger dog, then the offspring will be a large dog as well. It seems that most Goldendoodle puppies inherit a curly coat from their Poodle parents. Personality-wise, these dogs seem to have inherited the best traits from both parent breeds. Breeders definitely knew what they were doing when deciding to combine two wonderful dog breeds. Thankfully, the development of technology and science brought the breeders some relief. Today, breeders can predict how the newborn Goldendoodle puppy will look. Genetics can be predicted through genomic prediction methods and DNA tests. Proper food intake means a lot to all beings. From the smallest insect to the biggest animal in the world, everyone needs to eat well. During the first seconds of their lives, Goldendoodle puppies take milk from their mother. The first milky fluid from the mother is called colostrum. They will nurse for the next eight weeks until the mother starts to wean them. After weaning, the Goldendoodle puppies are ready to eat some big puppy food! By that, we mean puppy kibble that is suitable for their age. New owners should pay attention to getting the best puppy food they can find. Low-quality puppy food is low in vital nutrients and will lead to poor development. Golden Retrievers, as well as other members of the Retriever group such as the Labrador Retriever, are often prone to obesity. Just look at yourself when you regularly exercise — you can see some differences in your body, and you can feel strength in your muscles. If you want to get a Goldendoodle puppy, you need to be aware of its high energy levels. This is not a dog for those who prefer staying at home rather than going outside. The Goldendoodle puppy needs daily playtime that consists of running, playing fetch, playing tug of war, and other activities that involve motion. Not only that, but regular training and exercise will strengthen the bond between you two! Yes, it will, IF done too soon. This is when you will have to do your research thoroughly so you can be informed of the spaying and neutering effects on your little Goldendoodle puppy. Goldendoodle growth chart: effects of spaying Spaying is a surgical procedure done on female dogs. It includes the removal of the ovaries and the uterus. The ovaries are responsible for distributing female hormones — the most important being estrogen. These characteristics are visual traits that only female dogs have smaller heads, slim and sleek bodies, the ability to nurse, etc. If you spay your female dog too early, say, three months of age, there is a big possibility that she will have trouble with further growth and development. Also, most veterinarians will not agree to spaying young female puppies. It is therefore recommended to spay female Goldendoodle puppies when they grow at least over six months of age. Spaying is beneficial both to you and your Goldendoodle female dog. Firstly, you will prevent diseases like breast cancer and pyometra from happening. Secondly, neither you nor your female Goldendoodle dog will have to deal with her heat cycles. Except, it takes balls to neuter a Goldendoodle puppy. These organs regulate the secretion and levels of the hormone called testosterone. Just like estrogen in the female dog, testosterone characterizes the male dog. Thanks to testosterone, male Goldendoodle puppies grow larger than their female counterparts. Neutering male Goldendoodle puppies that are too young is not a good idea. If you neuter a male dog in the first months of age, he might not ever reach his full size. What also happens is that an early neutered male dog never reaches sexual maturity. So, consider neutering a male Goldendoodle puppy when he reaches above six months of age. This practice turns out to be the most beneficial to the male dog. The same goes for female Goldendoodles. Neutering is a good way to prevent male dogs from showing signs that they want to mate, and it also helps prevent testicular and prostate cancer. The first Goldendoodle dog appeared in the year .Since then, a lot of attention has been brought to the correct breeding programs of this mixed breed. To do so, they needed to know which genes from the parent breeds are more dominant and which are more recessive. The generations of the Goldendoodle mixed breed might be difficult to understand. That is why we are going to describe each Goldendoodle generation below. This number can be either 1 or 2 or 3, and so on. What this number means is what generation the Goldendoodle puppy is. It means that a crossbred Goldendoodle dog can be bred back to the Poodle. This is achieved by breeding the Goldendoodle back with a purebred Poodle. But, it might not work for breeding back the purebred Golden Retriever. Nonetheless, genetics are a huge gene lottery, which makes it so unpredictable! F1 Goldendoodle Filial hybrid one — the first generation of the Goldendoodle puppies derived from the purebred Golden Retriever and the purebred Poodle. Basically, this is a combination. So, F1 Goldendoodle puppies can inherit a low-shedding, curly to long coat. But, they can also inherit a heavy-shedding, straighter coat. Most breeders opt to breed their hybrid with a purebred Poodle because Poodles shed less than Golden Retrievers. F2 Goldendoodle Can you guess how F2 Goldendoodles are developed? Crossing two Goldendoodles is really what you call unpredictable. Because of many combinations that can occur, most breeders decide not to breed two Goldendoodles. F2B Goldendoodle All these numbers and letters have surely got you a bit confused. But, bear with me. But, it also may be a combination of both. Because it is difficult to predict this, breeders opt for genetic screening and DNA tests. At least science knows the answer… or does it? F3 Goldendoodle The F3 Goldendoodle is a combination of all of the above. There are so many combinations that might come out of it. If you got your Goldendoodle from a reputable breeder, he will provide you with information about the size of his previous puppies. That way, you can get an idea of how big your Goldendoodle puppy will get. Another way is to search for a puppy weight calculator online. These are the typical week-by-week Goldendoodles stages that you will go through with a new Goldendoodle puppy and what signs to look for that they are not developing correctly. Predicting average weights in Goldendoodles is challenging. The parent breeds are the strongest predictor of size, but hybrids can be unpredictable. Standard poodles and Golden Retrievers are both large dog breeds. However, a toy poodle or mini poodles can be bred to larger breeds like Golden Retrievers to produce a much smaller dog, like a toy Goldendoodle or even teacup Goldendoodles. Dogs with long lines registered with the Goldendoodle Association may have more predictable traits, but not as much as an AKC purebred dog. These puppies are born blind, deaf, and without teeth. These first weeks are a very critical time in their development. Your puppy will start to open their eyes at about 2 weeks of age. By the time that they are 3 weeks, their ears will be open, and you will start to notice that their teeth are pushing through their gums. At the end of this first stage, your Goldendoodle puppy will be aware of their surroundings. They will start to bark, crawl, and interact with the other puppies in their litter. At the end of this first puppy stage, they are aware of everything that is around them and are trying to crawl, bark, and interact with their littermates. During this time, they will continue to grow in size rapidly. Most importantly, they start to get more socially active with their mom, littermates, and the people in their lives. Your puppy will start to learn many new things during this stage of puppy development. Their mother will begin to teach them a few basic manners and start the weaning process. They will learn how to play with other puppies and what other puppies will tolerate. This is when they will learn how strong of a bite they have and what is okay for playing. They will usually establish a pecking order within the litter of puppies. This is the main reason why most breeders do not recommend taking the puppies from their litter and mother until they are about 7 to 8 weeks old. By 6 to 7 weeks of age, your Goldendoodle puppy will be able to be left alone for a short period of time. They will also be doing normal puppy behaviors such as eating puppy food , walking, running, and wagging their tail. This is also the time that your Goldendoodle puppy will need their first set of vaccines and dewormed. Most breeders will take their puppies to the vet for these vaccines. This way, they know that their puppies have received the vaccines that they need to get started off on the right track. Stage 3: 7 weeks to 12 Weeks After 7 weeks of age, your puppy is old enough to leave their mother and other littermates and go to their new home. This will probably be around the age when your first get your Goldendoodle. At first, try to keep everything just like the breeder had been. This helps keep your puppy on a normal routine while they are adjusting to their new house. Once your puppy has been at your house for a few days, you can slowly switch things if you want. You may already have a diet you want your puppy to eat. Also, make sure that your dog is eating large-breed puppy food. This will make sure that your Goldendoodle puppy is receiving the best nutrition needed for their fast-growing body. If you do plan on switching diets, make sure that you do this slowly; quickly changing diets can cause GI problems in your new puppy. At this age, your puppy will be ready to start learning everything and experiencing everything you are ready to teach them. They learn very fast at this age, so it is important to make sure that you are teaching them correctly. Your puppy can learn basic commands and manners by going to puppy classes. This will also give them socialization with other puppies and people during this stage. Having many different social encounters will help them become a very well-mannered dog. During this time, your Goldendoodle puppy may show signs of fear. This is a normal experience for a puppy to go through. They may be afraid of certain people, places, or things that they have never been afraid of. During this time, it is important to continue to socialize your Goldendoodle puppy and show them that these things are not as scary as they first thought they were. Make sure not to expose them to a lot of simulations at once, as these can cause them to become more afraid. Stage 4: 3 months to 4 months This is the stage of development when your Goldendoodle puppy will start to become independent. They may even start to challenge you or even ignore you. This is very similar to the terrible twos in people. Your Goldendoodle puppy will also start teething around this time. They will have very painful gums, which will cause them to want to bite and chew on anything possible. Make sure that you are providing your puppy with plenty of approved chewing toys in order to keep your shoes and furniture from becoming the next chew object. During this stage, you may find that you are telling your puppy no a lot. All this training will eventually pay off, and your puppy will be very well-mannered and do what you tell them to. Most of the time, your Goldendoodle puppy just wants to please you. All you must do is give them a little patience and love, and they will quickly learn what is expected of them. By starting obedience classes during this time, you will help your puppy become a friendly and well-behaved adult Goldendoodle. Stage 5: 4 months to 10 months During this time, your Goldendoodle puppy will continue to grow and develop very quickly. It is very important to continue teaching and training your Goldendoodle puppy. They will learn how to adapt to different social situations and what behavior is approved and what is not approved during this time. They will also continue to challenge you, so be prepared to stick to your training and not back off. During this time, your Goldendoodle may act a little bratty. There are going through their teenage years during this time. Also, during this time, do not let your dog play-bite with you, as this can teach them to be aggressive and encourage other dominant behaviors Around 6 months of age, it is advised to spay or neuter your Goldendoodle puppy. These procedures will help your puppy stay healthy and happy as well as prevent unwanted litters that end up in the shelter. Stage 6: 10 months to 1 Year During this stage, small Goldendoodles will reach their full size. They will usually reach maturity around 8 to 12 months of age. Larger Goldendoodles will continue to grow during this time and may not fully develop until they are 18 months to 2 years old. Your Goldendoodle puppy may now look like an adult dog; they usually are still developing mentally. They will have a ton of energy and usually not a lot of common sense. You will still need to monitor your Goldendoodle for any unwanted behavior and quickly correct any problems that you notice starting. Even though they are no longer a puppy, they will still need to continue training and learning commands. At this stage, your Goldendoodle will need lots of attention and exercise to keep them for getting into trouble. Always use a very firm voice and positive reinforcement when training and correcting unwanted behavior. It is best to have a loving and patient but firm voice when training your Goldendoodle Stage 7: 1 year and Older Between 1 and 2 years of age, your Goldendoodle will be fully developed and sexually mature. Your puppy will finally stop growing but may fill out in size just a little. At this point, you can now start exercising more with your Goldendoodle. They love to go for a jog, do agility training, or go for a long hike. Since their bones are now fully developed, there is less likely that they are going to have joint or stress injuries. This is also the best time to switch your puppy from puppy food to adult food. It is always best to stay with the same brand of puppy food that you fed to help decrease any GI signs from switching food. When switching food, it is recommended to switch food slowly. Also, make sure that the diet that you are feeding your Goldendoodle puppy is a high-quality diet. When will my Goldendoodle puppy need to be vaccinated? This is a common schedule most veterinarians follow when vaccinating puppies. This is usually done by the breeder before you get your Goldendoodle puppy. Most of these worms are microscopic, but some you can see in their stool. If you see worms, make sure to let your vet know. Your vet can give your Goldendoodle puppy medication to get rid of these nasty worms. Not only will your pet need vaccines, but they will also need heartworm, flea, and tick prevention. All of these parasites can cause health problems in your Goldendoodle, some of which can be fatal. If you notice something is not right in your Goldendoodle puppy, it is best to take them to the vet. Some very young Goldendoodle puppies can have problems regulating their blood sugar. If you notice that your Goldendoodle puppy has diarrhea, this can be from the stress of going to a new house, parasites, or even parvo. Any problems noticed in your puppy could be very serious, your vet can examine your pet and make sure that there is nothing that is wrong with your puppy. It would be better to be safe than sorry if your pet has something very serious going on. Both parvo and parasites can easily be prevented by sticking to the vaccine schedule and making sure that your puppy is properly dewormed. How big will my Goldendoodle puppy be? It can be hard to tell as puppies which one will be the biggest or which one will be the smallest. Usually, from the time that they are born until the day that you pick up your new puppy, all the puppies in the litter will change in size. At 8 weeks old, the smallest in the litter will usually be the smallest when they are all fully grown. The older your puppy gets, the easier it will be to determine if your puppy will be bigger or smaller. The exact adult weight can be a guess, but you can expect a miniature Goldendoodle to weigh about 4 to 9 pounds at 8 weeks old and a standard Goldendoodle to weigh over 9 pounds at 8 weeks old, and a medium-size Goldendoodle to fall between the 8 to pound range. Most dogs do most of their growing in the first 6 months of life. Smaller and miniature Goldendoodles will be half-grown at 4 months of age, with larger Goldendoodles taking a few months longer to reach this half-grown point. The larger the dog, the longer it will take them to reach adult size. When will my Goldendoodle Puppy stop growing? It may seem as if your Goldendoodle is getting bigger each day. Most Goldendoodle will be done growing by 1 to 2 years of age. They will usually reach their maximum height by 1 year of age and just fill out a little bit in the next year. Miniature Goldendoodle will be done growing by 7 to 10 months. The smaller the dog, the quicker they reach their adult body weight. Standard Goldendoodle should reach their full size by 2 years of age. After your Goldendoodle reaches 1 year of age, you need to monitor what you are feeding them. Lexie, 5-year-old fully grown F2 Mini Goldendoodle. Adult Stage Since your puppy is now over a year old, they are not growing, but there are some things that you need to consider as they start to get older. Goldendoodles that have just matured are usually very active. As your Goldendoodle gets older, they will start to slow down and sleep a little more. There are diseases that you need to look out for as your Goldendoodle gets older. If you notice any of these signs in your Goldendoodle, you need to see a veterinarian. What Age do Goldendoodles Stop Growing? A Goldendoodle puppy goes through a typical puppyhood, consisting of multiple developmental stages. Those stages make up the first to second year of life. For instance, a Standard Goldendoodle puppy will, on average, grow at about the same rate as other medium to large dogs like the German Shepherd and Collie. A Medium Goldendoodle may take a couple of more months to reach most of his adult size. A Standard Goldendoodle is a large-size dog and typically takes just over a year to become fully grown. But this is an average and some dogs can take up to 2 years to become full-grown adult dogs. The AKC estimates a large dog who weighs anywhere from 51 to pounds reaches full size at around 18 months old. How big your puppy gets depends on which type of Goldendoodle you have or are going to get — mini, medium, or standard. Across the three types, adult dogs can weigh anywhere from 15 to 90 pounds. From birth until the gotchya day, puppies have fluctuated back and forth in terms of who weighs the most. Even though adult weight is a bit of a guess for a young puppy, expect mini goldendoodles to weigh 4lbs-9lbs at 8 weeks of age. A medium puppy and standard puppy may both weigh 9lbs at 8 weeks old, but the standard puppy with gain weight at a quicker rate than the medium. Like most dog breeds, goldendoodles generally do the majority of their growing in the first six months of life. In fact, many mini goldendoodle puppies reach half of their adult weight by four months. Standard goldendoodles may take a month or so longer to reach that halfway mark. The larger the dog, the longer growing takes. For mini goldendoodles, expect the weight to start leveling off between months of age. Standard goldendoodles, like other large dog breeds, will grow for a longer period of time. While this rule may work for many standards, it is not accurate with smaller-sized goldendoodles who finish growing at a younger age. When will my goldendoodle stop growing? Dogs can finish growing anywhere between years of age, but generally reach their maximum height by a year of age and spend the remaining months filling out. This means your dog might hit a growth spurt right after her first birthday — she might not get any taller but she could thicken up. Golden retrievers grow at a slower rate in terms of height than standard poodles, but fill out more quickly. Golden retrievers tend to finish growing and filling out between months while standard poodles can take up to 2 years to accomplish the same. Our breeding program has earned the the highest level of accomplishments that a kennel in the United States can achieve. Nadelhaus breeds purebred German Shepherds year round and we also import both German Shepherd puppies and adults direct from Europe for our clients. Long-haired German Shepherds are technically called a long coat German Shepherd, while a short-haired German Shepherd is called a normal coat or stock coat German Shepherd. Dogs with either coat have the same physiological structure and both have double coats: an undercoat and a top coat. The only difference between the two is the top coat. The long haired German Shepherd will have a heavier top coat than the undercoat. The double coat of a German Shepherd is an important feature of the breed. The double coat weathers and insulates the dogs—it protects them from the cold in the winter and the heat in the summer. The length of the coat of a German Shepherd has no impact on its ability as a working dog. What does a long haired German Shepherd look like? The skeleton and structure of a long-haired German Shepherd will be the same as a short-haired German Shepherd. Both dogs will have an undercoat, but the difference is that the top coat of a long-haired German Shepherd will be longer. The long coat GSD has longer and silkier hair on the chest, back, face, tail, and on the backside of its legs. Short on the head, including the inside of the ears, on the front side of the legs, on the paws and toes, somewhat longer and more strongly covered in hair on the neck, almost forming a mane. On the back side of the legs the hair extends to the carpal joint or the hock and forms clear trousers on the back side of the haunches. Historically, German Shepherds originated in Germany and were native sheepdogs. He firmly believed that the standard of the German Shepherd breed should not include dogs with long hair. Throughout the s, long haired German Shepherds were considered unsuitable and unacceptable for breeding. It is important to note that long-haired German Shepherds are the result of natural genetic diversity and not a separate breed. Their long coats are an inherited trait that can occur when both parents carry the recessive long-hair gene. This gene manifests as a more luxurious and abundant coat, offering a striking contrast to the traditional short-haired German Shepherd appearance. The breeding of long-haired German Shepherds follows the same rigorous standards and principles as their short-haired counterparts. The focus remains on maintaining the breed's exceptional temperament, working abilities, and overall health. Over time, breeders recognized the value of long-haired German Shepherds and began selectively breeding them to maintain and enhance their unique characteristics. Through careful pairings and strategic breeding programs, the long-haired variety established itself as a distinct and cherished branch of the German Shepherd breed. How big do long-haired German Shepherds get? Long-haired German Shepherds are structurally the same as short-haired German Shepherds, therefore they can both grow to similar sizes. Males: inches tall, pounds Females: inches tall, pounds Since both German Shepherds are physiologically the same, they also have the same temperaments: loyal, intelligent, energetic, courageous and protective. German Shepherds are ranked 2 on the AKC Breed Popularity list and make for wonderful family companions and working dogs. How can I identify a long-haired German Shepherd puppy? In the photo below are two litter mates from a recent Nadelhaus litter. The puppy on the left is a long coat and the puppy on the right is a normal coat. The long coat has wispier hair on the chest, back, face, tail, and on the backside of its legs. Long-hair female German Shepherd next to short-hair male German Shepherd. Genetically in German Shepherds, the short hair gene is dominant and the long hair gene is recessive. This means if two short-haired German Shepherds are mated, but neither carries the recessive long hair gene, then no long haired puppies can be produced. However, if two short-haired German Shepherds are mated and both carry the recessive gene, then long-haired German Shepherd puppies can be produced. Long-haired German Shepherds are considered a less common variant of the breed, adding to their allure and exclusivity. While short-haired German Shepherds dominate the breed standard, enthusiasts of long-haired Shepherds appreciate their unique beauty and elegant appearance. Due to their rarity, finding a reputable breeder or rescue organization specializing in long-haired German Shepherds may require some research and patience. However, the joy of owning one of these beautiful dogs is well worth the effort for those who appreciate their longer coats and exceptional qualities. Do long-haired German Shepherds shed more than short-haired German Shepherds? No, this is a common misconception. Although they shed less than short haired German Shepherds, their coats still require regular maintenance. They will need regular brushing and grooming, especially if you enjoy hiking or outdoor activities with your GSD. While it is a rare occurrence for a long-haired GSD to not have an undercoat, most of them do have undercoats. And just like short-haired GSDs, their undercoats will shed more or less throughout the year depending on the season. Should I trim my long haired German Shepherd's coat? The decision to trim a long haired German Shepherd comes down to personal preference, but it is not a necessity. Trimming can help make for more manageable living around the house. If you choose to trim, you can trim around the backs of the ears, on the back of the legs both front and back and then thin the bushy tail. Shaving a German Shepherd on the other hand is never recommended. Their double coats help keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. What are long haired German Shepherds called? Regular brushing: Long-haired German Shepherds require regular brushing to prevent matting and tangles. Aim for at least a few brushing sessions per week to keep their coat in good condition. Finish your brushing session with a gentle dog brush to clean up loose hairs. Bathing and drying: It's important to bathe your long-haired German Shepherd as needed, using a dog-specific shampoo. Be sure to thoroughly rinse out all the shampoo to prevent any residue. After bathing, use a high-velocity dryer or a cool air dryer to dry their coat thoroughly, as moisture trapped in the fur can lead to skin issues. Professional grooming: Consider taking your long-haired German Shepherd to a professional groomer for occasional trimming and coat maintenance. A groomer can help keep the fur around sensitive areas, such as the paws and ears, tidy and reduce the chances of matting. Watch for seasonal shedding: Like all German Shepherds, long-haired ones will undergo shedding seasons. Be prepared for increased shedding during these times and brush your dog more frequently to remove loose hair. A de-shedding tool can be helpful in managing shedding and keeping their coat healthy. Remember, each dog is unique, and the specific care requirements may vary. Does Nadelhaus sell long haired German Shepherd puppies? Sable color actually means that the coat is multi-colored and has black tips. It can appear on any base coat. In the German Shepherd breed, this is usually red or tan. Instead, you can hear them use the term German Shepherd Agouti. These dogs can grow up to be between 24 and 26 inches depending on whether you have a female or a male GSD , respectively. Females can weigh between 55 and 73 lbs, while males can reach a weight of 95 lbs! This makes them significantly larger than females. Sable German Shepherds come in various color patterns. However, the most common ones are liver on cream, black on cream, black on red, and sometimes even silver on cream. Most, if not all sable German Shepherds change their coat color as they age. In fact, before they reach adulthood, they will change color several times! Usually, sable German Shepherds will be born with a solid black coat. As they reach 8 weeks of age, however, their color will become lighter. Still, until they are fully grown, their coat color might darken again, or become lighter over time. This makes it hard for sable German Shepherd breeders to confirm the exact shade that your new puppy will be. You can get a general idea of what your sable German Shepherd puppy will look like by looking at his parents. However, if his parents are in quite different colors, then predicting the adult coat color can be challenging. Overall, though, your puppy should keep the markings it has when it is very young. The only thing that will change is the shade of its base coat, and sometimes some individual hairs might become lighter or darker. Are Sable German Shepherds Rare? They are not a crossbreed, and the sable gene exists in all GSD bloodlines. This makes them a lot rarer than standard black and tan German Shepherds, although they are still not considered rare — at least not red and tan sable GSDs. Still, if a base color is rare, that makes the sable variation of it even rarer. For example, silver sable German Shepherds are quite rare, while tan sable German Shepherds are fairly common. The rarest combination of all is recessive black. In fact, this is the rarest of all German Shepherd colors , whether sable or not. These pups look just like solid black German Shepherds , but they carry tan or sable genes hidden in their bloodlines. They can easily be confused with black German Shepherds. Overall, the only thing that makes sable German Shepherds different from any other German Shepherd is their coat color. Sable GSDs resemble wolves in that each individual hair has a black tip. Standard sable German Shepherds have a mixture of tan and black coloration. Other than wolves, it is found in only a few dog breeds. It is known that the agouti gene controls the sable color in these dogs. German Shepherds, just like other dog breeds, can come in many colors and patterns. In fact, many coat colors are considered faults and, as a result, they are not acceptable by most major kennel clubs. Some coat colors are unacceptable because they are connected with an increased risk of certain health problems. This is usually the case with white or merle coats. These colors are caused by genes connected with vision and hearing loss, so intentional breeding is frowned upon. The same goes for the white German Shepherd. Both of these colors are forbidden by kennel clubs. Photo from: nala. This is because the sable pattern has always been inside the GSDs genetics. The AKC recognizes light and darker sable colors, black sable, and bi-color sable dogs. Despite this, you can conclude that sable is a perfectly acceptable German Shepherd color. Still, there is one important thing to note. While sable German Shepherds are recognized by kennel clubs, it is unheard of that a sable GSD has won or even participated in a dog show or any type of dog competition. This is because the judges favor standard black and tan and black and red German Shepherds. Because of this, most sable GSDs come from working lines and not from show lines. It consists of a base coat with black or darker tips. This is because black and tan German Shepherds are quite common as it is. Some of these pups might appear brindle at a first sight, but upon closer inspection, you would notice how they actually have black tips instead of stripes. Because of their shade, which is something in between red, brown, and yellow, many dog lovers confuse tan sable German Shepherds with golden sable German Shepherds. In fact, according to many German Shepherd owners, red sable is probably the most unique and gorgeous GSD coat color. The bright red coat color looks striking when combined with black tips. Black Sable German Shepherd When talking about black sable German Shepherds, we have to mention that there is a distinction between classic black sable and recessive black sable pups. Black sable dogs look like a dark shade of sable. While not entirely black, the majority of their coat will be very dark in shade, with a few brighter spots peeking out of this dark coat color. Black sable German Shepherds are among rarer sable GSDs, but there are still many breeders that reproduce them, so you can find them fairly easily. On the other hand, recessive black sable German Shepherds look very similar to solid black GSDs, except they are a bit lighter in shade. If you look very closely, you could see that their undercoat is similar to a very dark shade of brown instead of being fully black. Recessive black sable GSDs are extremely rare. While they appear black in color, they actually carry a sable gene, so they can produce sable or black and tan offspring. Because this type of black sable is a recessive gene, there are almost no breeding programs that specialize in this particular shade. Blue is the dilution of the black pigment caused by a specific blue dilution gene. Your GSD can have a coat of any other color with the exception of black and still be considered blue. Yes, all blue German Shepherds will have a blue nose. The same goes for the blue sable. Their eyes will usually be of lighter color. Sometimes, they can even be blue. As the blue dilution gene is recessive, this coat shade can be quite rare. Liver Sable German Shepherd Just like blue German Shepherds, liver German Shepherds are also the result of a recessive dilution gene — except that this particular gene dilutes the black color into a deep brown shade. Instead, the hair tips and markings will be dark brown. Most importantly, liver sable German Shepherds will have a black nose, amber or green eyes, as well as brown lips and eye rims. Because this coat color resembles that of a wolf, it is also known as wolf grey. These pups can have black markings over grey, or even grey over silver. This is a unique color combination for German Shepherds, with or without the sable pattern. Also, instead of a black mask and black saddle markings, these pups will sometimes have markings that are grey in color. Because of such color overlap, some experts think that silver sable German Shepherds and grey sable German Shepherds should be considered as the same coat color. Golden Sable German Shepherd Golden sable German Shepherds have a pale tan or yellow base color which, when combined with black tips, makes them look as if they are made of gold. The easiest way to tell whether your pup is a yellow liver or golden color is to look at its nose color. While liver GSDs will have a brown nose, golden ones will always have a black nose, as well as dark eyes. While many things have remained unclear, this we do know: The sable coloring is caused by the dominant gene that can be written as AW AW. All of these color genetics are recognized by the SV. The SV is the breed standard set by von Stepanitz, and this remains something that all other breeders look up to. They are the result of the mutation of the original genes. Still, not all sable dogs are AW AW. Some carry recessive genes in them — for example, AW a , a German Shepherd that would appear sable but could have a recessive solid black offspring. The sable gene is the most dominant color gene in German Shepherds. In other words, all dogs with the AW allele will appear sable, even though they might have an offspring in some other color. Many dog lovers want to know if dogs of a certain color are more at risk of getting some severe health problem. The agouti gene is responsible for the sable color. In other words, the way you or the breeders treat dogs is how they will behave. A puppy that grew up with loving human parents will likely become a well-behaved, polite dog. However, if you abuse your dog, he will become aggressive. Of course, socialization is necessary for German Shepherds as they are large and protective dogs. Still, this is entirely up to the owner and not to the sable coat color — or any other coat color for that matter. Sable German Shepherd Temperament Sable German Shepherds are bred to be working dogs, such as police dogs and service dogs, and not show dogs. This means that they might be a bit more used to harsh working conditions, and that they are not as used to being indoor dogs as black and tan or black and red GSDs — although this slight difference in temperament is barely noticeable. This means that it is a very intelligent dog that is effortless and straightforward to train. He can learn new tricks in no time. Keep in mind that you should make sure your German Shepherd gets lots of not just physical exercise, but also plenty of mental stimulation. Sable GSDs can get bored easily, and this can result in bad behaviors. Unfortunately, this also means that sable GSDs are prone to separation anxiety if left alone. Separation anxiety can lead to many destructive behaviors, and your furniture or walls might suffer. While GSDs are serious working dogs, they are full of love and have a silly side to them. This also means that sable German Shepherds do great with children — but under one condition. Your kids need to know how to behave around such large dogs. While sable GSDs are patient, they have their limits, and they might snap if children go overboard. Dogs have much keener hearing than humans. If your kids are too loud for you, they are unbearable to your pet. Also, sable German Shepherds are large dogs. Other than that, sable German Shepherds make amazing family dogs that will bring joy and a feeling of security to every family member. Long-Haired Sable German Shepherd You might think that the only difference between a short-haired and a long-haired sable German Shepherd is in the length of their fur, but there is more to this. This makes them less capable of dealing with cold winter weather, unlike their cousins with double coats. Because of this, long-haired sable German Shepherds are more accustomed to indoor living, so they are calmer and more used to being around their humans all the time. Not just that, but long-haired German Shepherds of any color are not accepted by the AKC, and therefore, cannot participate in dog shows. All of this makes long-haired sable German Shepherds a lot more mellow compared to standard short-haired sable GSDs. Most long-haired GSD owners have reported that their pooches are cuddlier and friendlier than regular German Shepherds. If you want to get a sable German Shepherd with the sole purpose to be an amazing family pet, you might want to consider getting a long-haired one. They are still prone to any health problem that standard GSDs have. The most common of these issues is hip dysplasia. This causes pain and difficulty in walking. Hip dysplasia is hereditary, and not much can be done to prevent it entirely. However, environmental factors are important for the progression of this health condition, so there are some things you can do to keep it under control. Think of hip dysplasia as arthritis in humans. In fact, severe hip dysplasia can lead to a specific type of arthritis in sable German Shepherds. Make sure your German Shepherd is active so his bones and joints are well formed. Active dogs are less prone to any orthopedic condition, and hip dysplasia is no different. One of the best activities you can make your German Shepherd do is swim. Feed him only high-quality dog food. There are plenty of affordable, yet healthy dog food brands on sites such as Amazon. Good dog foods have to have lots of protein and not as many carbs. This will make sure that your doggie is energetic and healthy. You might also consider replacing store-bought dog treats that are high in bad nutrients with healthy alternatives from your kitchen. Sure, some human foods such as anything spicy can be harmful for your pet. However, tuna , fish sticks , or peppers , can be very beneficial for your four-legged friend. Another important thing is to never miss vet check-ups. If you identify any health issue early on, you have a greater chance of preventing further disease development. Of course, you should always buy from reputable breeders who can tell you the precise health history of the parent breeds. As many diseases that plague German Shepherds are genetic, a puppy born from healthy parents will have fewer chances of getting sick. While sable German Shepherds are prone to a few more health conditions, such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy PRA and bloat, they have a decent lifespan, and most live more than 11 years. As they grow older, however, the sable coloring will become more obvious. Despite the sable gene being dominant, this can become a bit tricky. You can never know at least not without extremely expensive genetic testing! In other words, you might breed two sable German Shepherd dogs and end up with a black and tan puppy. This is another reason why not many breeders dare to specialize in breeding them. However, quality dogs with good bloodlines tend to be more expensive. Some might end up costing thousands of dollars! While this might sound like too much money to pay, there is one thing to keep in mind: reputable breeders have a reason behind the high price of their puppies. Responsible breeders will conduct all the necessary health testings of their parent dogs as well as all puppies from the litter. They will do all they can to ensure that their dogs are healthy, so they can sell you only high-quality pups. Not just that, but they usually begin training and socializing their puppies when they are only a few weeks old. This means that the chances of your dog misbehaving or acting out of the ordinary are very slim. However, they are usually people who have ended up with an unwanted litter that they now want to sell. This means that the chances of you getting an unhealthy or misbehaving dog are quite high. Places to certainly avoid are pet shops and puppy mills. Dogs bred at puppy mills tend to have plenty of health problems. Adopting a dog is certainly the most ethical and humane thing that any aspiring dog owner can do. However, there are a few risks with adopting dogs. First off, you need to look for trustworthy adoption centers. Such locations will make sure that their dogs are healthy and evaluated before they are sent off to their new home. Also, you can never be entirely certain on the background of your new dog, both medical and environmental wise. You might end up with a dog that has a hidden genetic defect or an abused dog who needs additional socialization. Some people can agree upon this, and this is a risk worth taking. These dogs make amazing and loyal family pets, and they can even be great nanny dogs for your kids. However, you need to be aware that these are large and active dogs. They need to learn how to behave around small children and other pets. They need lots of exercise and mental stimulation in order to behave, and you have to provide this to them. If you have kids, then another important thing is to teach them how to respect their new family member. Sable German Shepherds are known to love to have some space from time to time. In the end, the perfect dog breed for you only depends on your preferences and what you can provide for your new pet. If you want a fluffy and loyal family member and you are ready to commit to him, then a sable German Shepherd is an excellent choice. Post navigation. It doesn't mean long coats have any problems - far from it, and for many people they are an even more desirable dog than the standard breed German Shepherd. Are you looking for a dog with all the amazing characteristics of a German shepherd, but you also want something a bit different and special? If so, then why not consider a sable German shepherd? The sable German shepherd is not a crossbreed dog but rather a recognized variation within the breed, so the dog retains all the benefits of a purebred pup. German shepherds are one of the most popular purebred dog breeds in the United States, in part thanks to their intelligence, trainability, and intense loyalty. They are also well-loved for their sleek, noble appearance. Interestingly, sable is actually the original color of the German shepherd breed. It is the only variation of the German shepherd that has the same color as the founding member of the breed. Read on to learn everything you need to know about these attractive, intelligent, and hard-working dogs. Sable German Shepherd Appearance Sable German shepherds look just like most other German shepherd dogs, with the exception of their distinctively colored coat. The German shepherd is a large breed. You can expect the males to reach up to 26 inches tall and weigh between 75 and 95 pounds. The females are a bit smaller. Their heads are domed in shape with a long, square muzzle. They have alert, erect ears and long necks that make them seem even larger than they are. It is considered ideal for the dog to be longer than it is tall with a proportion of 10 to 8. Their bushy tail should extend out in a hook-like shape. German shepherds tend to dip their head low like a wolf when they are running or prowling, which contributes to the consensus that they look very much like the wolf ancestors of dogs. These dogs have double coats with a soft undercoat and a denser guard layer. The guard layer can be either medium or long, though the medium length is significantly more common. Most German shepherds are either tan and black or red and black. The lighter brown shade is usually their principal color, with a black face mask and black markings on their back which often look like a saddle. A variety of other color variations exist, including pure black, pure white, liver, silver, blue, panda, and, of course, sable. Sable basically means the dog has mostly lighter colored hair with a black tips, which can make the dog appear grey or mottled. In reality, the actual color combinations are more varied, and the sable pattern could be any mixture of tan, black, brown, or red. The term is mostly used in the United States. In other countries, such as Germany, these dogs are often just called grey. It has since become a popular working dog for roles such as search and rescue, police, and military due to its strength, trainability, and intelligence. The breed emerged from the s trend to try to standardize dog breeds to assist in certain jobs, such as herding sheep. Max von Stephanitz was a leading thinker in this area and was specifically looking for canine specimens that matched his ideal vision of a working dog. He found that ideal dog at a dog show in .He purchased the dog and named it Horand von Grafrath and founded the Society for German Shepherd Dogs to promote the breed and others like it. Horand, who was in fact a sable-colored German Shepherd, became the center point of a breeding program. Horand himself had 84 puppies, and extensive inbreeding was required to secure the characteristics of the breed. When the German Shepherd was imported to the United States in the early 20th century, it became popular with gangsters and bootleggers for its strength, intelligence, and intimidating appearance. It was also popular in Nazi Germany, and even Adolf Hitler loved the breed. As a result, it has gained a reputation for being a fierce, intimidating, and even dangerous breed. However, this says much more about how the dogs were used than the natural temperament of the dogs themselves. German Shepherd Temperament The color of a German shepherd makes no difference to its temperament, so you can expect a sable German shepherd to conform to the general temperament of the breed. German shepherd dogs are often described as active and self-assured. This, combined with their intelligence and eagerness to learn and please, makes them excellent working dogs. They are also highly obedient and loyal. Their extreme loyalty also extends to family situations. They will raise the alarm with their loud, deep bark if they sense danger. However, German shepherds are not naturally aggressive. This is a reputation that stems from the way that the dog has been used in the past. That said, German shepherds are often associated with severe dog bites. This is largely due to the popularity of the breed and the strength of their bite rather than any innate aggression; there are simply more of them around than many other dog breeds. Tests suggest that German Shepherds have a bite force of over 1, newtons, which is less than a Rottweiler but more than a pit bull. They tend to have a natural suspicion of strangers and like to chase smaller animals. Their intelligence and compliance means they can be trained not to display this behavior, but as an owner, you need to put in the work of training them properly and consistently. German shepherds are a very curious breed in addition to being highly intelligent, which is why they are well suited for search and rescue missions. German Shepherd Energy Level German shepherds are very playful and active dogs, so they need lots of physical exercise and mental stimulation in order to thrive. This is another reason why they often do well as working animals. Working gives them both the physical and mental stimulation to complete these challenging tasks. Pleasing their handlers is also attractive to these highly reward-oriented dogs. Ideally, German shepherds need at least 60 to 90 minutes of exercise every day, preferably spread over at least two different sessions. However, this should be slightly less when they are puppies. There is always a risk of over-exercising puppies, especially when it comes to large dog breeds. As a general rule, you should exercise a puppy daily for five minutes for every month of their age until they are an adult. German shepherds reach adulthood at around 18 months. So, for example, a six month old pup should be getting 30 minutes of exercise a day if we follow this rule, as six months times five minutes comes out to 30 minutes per day. What to know more about exercising your puppy? Read our article: How far can I walk my puppy? German shepherds will love to accompany you on adventures, such as hikes and walks, and they also love swimming. They will do well at the lake, on the beach, or even accompanying you on a boat. However, even though they are excellent swimmers, they should have a doggy life vest if you are out at sea. They will struggle in an apartment, and their large size can make navigating small apartments challenging even for these nimble dogs. Ideally, they should have a backyard where they can move around freely, especially when left at home alone. The intelligence of these dogs means they can get bored quickly. While puzzle toys, such as a Kong , can help on the occasions when you do need to leave them alone, they are likely to become stressed if they are left alone regularly. German Shepherd Health Risks German shepherds have a life expectancy of a little over 10 years. This is normal for dogs of their size, and larger dogs tend to have shorter lifespans than smaller breeds. You should not expect a sable German shepherd to be immune from these, especially since further inbreeding is often required to produce the sable color. It is common for these dogs to develop hip and elbow dysplasia , which is a developmental abnormality of the joints that can restrict movement and cause pain. This is often the result of different elements of the body growing at different speeds. The best way to prevent this is to ensure good nutrition and the right level of exercise during their crucial growing period. Even if the development of hip and elbow dysplasia does not affect the dog at a younger age, it can make them more susceptible to arthritis and other forms of joint pain when they are older. Older German shepherds often benefit from an orthopedic bed to take pressure off their joints. The breed also appears to be predisposed to degenerative myelopathy. This is a degenerative spinal cord disease that generally shows up in older dogs after about the age of seven years. If you are looking for one of these puppies specifically, you may need to go to a breeder. The sable color is relatively rare, and breeders have to control specifically for this kind of coat. As a result, you can expect to pay a bit more for a sable puppy than you would a German shepherd of any other more common colors. Are you thinking of adopting a sable German shepherd, or any German shepherd, into your family? Here are a few questions to ask yourself to determine if you and your home are a good fit for this breed. German shepherds are highly trainable and obedient, which means even first-time owners should be able to take on the challenge of training them. German shepherds need a commanding presence to keep them in check. The sad reality is that many people are also afraid of big dogs like these, and their behavior and response to them can cause serious problems. You need to feel confident to take control of your dog in charged situations. These dogs are also very active, so they will do best if they have a bit of outdoors to call their own that lets them run around a little, dig, and play. Just be sure your yard is properly and securely fenced in! German shepherds are very energetic dogs that need to be active a lot, which means you will need to be active frequently as well. As well as daily exercise, they will want to join you on weekend adventures rather than weekends on the couch catching up on Netflix. German shepherds need to spend a lot of time with their owners, as they need both companionship and intellectual stimulation. Thinking about getting a new puppy? Check out our new puppy checklist. Sable German shepherds have a coat with lighter roots and darker tips covering most of their body. The tips are usually black, which means the dog looks as though it has a greyish color. It is a natural color variation within the breed. How common are sable German shepherds? Sable German shepherds are significantly rare in comparison to the popular tan and black or red and black colors that dominate the breed. This is why a sable puppy will probably cost you more than other color variations. However, pure black German shepherds are a bit more rare. Are sable German shepherds bigger? No, sable German shepherds are not bigger than other German shepherds. The females should weigh between 55 and 75 pounds and the males 75 to 95 pounds. Look at the size of the parents to get a better feel for how big your pup is likely to get. Are German shepherds good family dogs? With the right training and socialization, German shepherds are excellent dogs for an active household. They will be loving, obedient, and protective. They are good around children, though small children should always be supervised around dogs, regardless of the breed and their level of familiarity. Accidents happen, even when children are around dogs they have grown up with and know well. What is bad about German shepherds? German shepherds tend to be suspicious of everyone, which can contribute to overly protective and territorial behavior. Proper socialization can help minimize this personality trait, but they will probably carry an element of this with them for their entire lives. The Verdict Sable German shepherds are not exotic crossbreeds but rather a rare color of the purebred German shepherd dog. They are actually the original color of the breed, matching its famous founding member. Sable-colored German shepherds are actually relatively rare, so they can be expensive to procure. However, aside from their unique color, they are just like other German shepherds, one of the most popular breeds in the United States. They are large and strong dogs with a lot of energy, which makes them well suited to hard work. They are also highly intelligent and eager to please, which makes them ideal to train to complete complex tasks such as the roles of military and police dogs despite being originally bred as herders. Overall, sable German shepherds are: Rarer than just about any other color of German shepherd No different than other German shepherds as far as personality, temperament, etc. With the right training and socialization, they are very safe dogs. German shepherds are great dogs for active people who have a lot of time to spend with their pup and want a companion to join them on various active adventures. Today, they are common household dogs that are loved around the world. These dogs tend to be loyal, stubborn, confident, intelligent, curious, brave, obedient, and protective. They have many positive attributes that make them very popular as pets. Size and Appearance of a 4 Month Old German Shepherd Once a German Shepherd reaches four months of age, it can be one foot tall and will weigh about half of the total adult weight. Male German Shepherds will weigh between 35 and 40 pounds, while females will weigh between 31 and 35 pounds. Between months three and four of life, a German Shepherd will gain around 10 pounds of body weight, and this will cause a difference in the dog's size and appearance. At this age, German Shepherds will be growing quickly, and you will be able to notice differences in the dog's size month-by-month. A four-month-old German Shepherd will no longer look like a puppy, and it will more closely resemble an adult by this age. Once the dog reaches four months old, the coat will be different from that of a puppy, and the dog will shed much more. The coat will become thicker and glossier, and the exact texture might depend on what foods the dog is eating. German Shepherds come in a variety of colors that include black, white, gray, black and tan, black and red, black and silver, and sable. The coloring of your dog will depend on the breeding and parents. Additionally, the dog is teething at this age. The German Shepherd will be teething until about seven to eight months, and during this time, the milk teeth will be replaced with larger adult teeth. German Shepherd puppies tend to have ears that lay flatter, while the adult's ears will be perky and stand straight up. At four months, the process of ear perking will begin, although the cartilage will not strengthen for another month or two. This means that the ears can perk up, then flatten, then perk up again until they become permanently lifted in adulthood. The dog's ears can remain flat if they live somewhere with consistently loud sounds, as they will try to avoid damage to their hearing by listening to these noises. To allow the dog's ears to perk properly, it is important to keep your dog away from loud, abrupt noises that can negatively affect their hearing. Activity and Behavior Four month old German Shepherds are very active puppies that must be stimulated physically as well as mentally. Some great activities to do with a dog include playing outside, playing with toys, going on walks or jogs, dog sports, and attending obedience training. A four-month German Shepherd will enjoy going on walks for about a mile at a time, and it is preferable to go on several shorter walks throughout the day rather than going on one very long walk. About two hours of active playtime per day is important for your puppy. Playtime is when they are both physically and intellectually enriched, and it is vital for development going into adulthood. For the first four months of life, there are many new experiences and adventures that your dog will learn from, so it is important. Sleeping Needs Sleep is extremely important for a young German Shepherd, and if the dog is not getting enough sleep , it might start to misbehave. If you notice this, it is important to discuss working out a proper daily schedule with your veterinarian, as it will often be a fix that you can make yourself by changing your routine, walk schedule, eating times, or play times. At the age of four months, a German Shepherd will sleep for around 18 hours a day. They need the energy to grow, which is why they sleep for most of the day, but in the hours when they are awake, German Shepherds tend to be very active. Dogs that exercise a lot will also sleep more to recuperate the energy lost during the day. If there are many new things to explore, the dog will sleep for fewer hours during the day. Some four months later, German Shepherds will also take 15 to minute naps during the day, and then they will wake up to play, eat, or use the bathroom. Health and Care Each time you take your dog to the vet, you should weigh and measure your German Shepherd to make sure that they are growing at the proper rate. If your dog is healthy, it should be growing quickly, and the veterinarian can confirm that everything looks good. At the age of four months, you should get a third set of vaccines, including DHPP and rabies, to protect your dog against these diseases. This can be done through a veterinarian. Vaccines are important to complete on time to boost your dog's immune system and keep them as healthy and up-to-date as possible. It is important to take your dog to the vet if you notice extreme changes in behavior, sleeping patterns, coughing or sneezing , runny noses or overly watery eyes, any form of weight loss, lack of appetite, heavy breathing, excessive urination, irritated gums, vomiting, or diarrhea. These can be signs that your dog is sick and needs medical care. Bathing your German Shepherd too often can cause the natural oils that a dog needs to keep its skin protected to dry up, so it is important not to over-bathe your puppy. However, it is important to keep your dog's bed, bowls, and toys clean to avoid fleas or other insects that might negatively affect your pet. As your four-month-old German Shepherd's coat is transitioning into an adult coat, it is important to brush the fur every day. This is to prevent excessive shedding, which can irritate your dog and create a mess inside the house. It is important to always be gentle with your dog and not brush him too roughly. Feeding Your 4 Month Old German Shepherd A German Shepherd is a big dog, and at the age of four months, it is still a puppy that is actively growing and will therefore require a large amount of food. Four-month German Shepherds should be fed three times a day, and they should eat one to two cups of kibble at each feeding time. This kibble should be specifically meant for puppies of this age, as it will have the proper nutrients and ingredients for your puppy to grow into a healthy adult. At the end of the fourth month, you can begin to feed your dog twice a day, but they should still be eating kibble meant for puppies until they reach six months of age and they are no longer growing as rapidly. Treats are also a good addition to kibble, but you should not exceed three to five small treats per day. These treats should be exclusively for dogs , as feeding your German Shepherd adult food can cause many health issues. It is important to monitor how much you are feeding your dog, as overeating can cause obesity and lead to severe health issues. Additionally, if you decide to use a raw diet rather than kibble, it is important to be mindful of the quality and nutrition of the food to keep your German Shepherd healthy and energized. Training A four-month German Shepherd will be easy to train because the puppy's main goal will be to please their owner, and they are very intelligent and loyal dogs that will be eager to learn from their owner. One of the reasons why German Shepherds are such a popular breed is because of their trainability. A German Shepherd's instinct is to protect, as the breed was originally bred to herd and protect sheep. This can lead to a puppy barking often as a means to protect its family, and this can be a misbehavior that the owner hopes to correct. Training can help reduce unnecessary barking in your German Shepherd puppy. Another potential behavioral issue is using the bathroom inside the home, which is common at four months old. The owner must train their dog to go outside to use the bathroom, and patience is required for this process. The most efficient strategy for potty training is to be encouraging when the puppy correctly uses the bathroom outside and to avoid any anger when they have an accident, as this will only make training go slower. German Shepherd puppies might also bite and nip people to try to get attention or play. They will understand that they should not repeat this behavior and will learn quickly. While your German Shepherd is teething, it might bite furniture, which can cause damage. The best way to avoid this is to buy many chew toys to help your dog with the process of teething, as well as move any valuables out of the dog's reach. This behavior will reduce once the dog's adult teeth have all come in. Socialization with people and other animals can help your German Shepherd behave better, and it is important to expose them to new situations to help them learn. They are very curious animals who will enjoy having new experiences and trying new things. A German Shepherd is a medium to large-sized dog, and by the age of four months, the puppy will already be much larger than it was at birth. At four months, a male German Shepherd will have a shoulder height between 11 and 14 inches. A female German Shepherd will have a shoulder height between 10 and 12 inches. A male German Shepherd at four months old should weigh 35 to 40 pounds. A female should weigh 31 to 35 pounds. The dog should be rapidly growing, but it is important not to let them overeat because obesity can be a real health issue for your dog. Measuring the weight of your dog regularly can help you keep track of its growth, and if there are any concerning patterns, you should discuss it with your veterinarian. At the age of four months, it is not unusual for your dog to grow up to two pounds in a single week, and it is a time of great change and growth. At the age of four months, your German Shepherd should eat three meals a day. These meals should consist of one to two cups of kibble. This means that the total amount of kibble eaten per day should be three to six. You should base how much you feed your German Shepherd on their size, activity level, and how hungry they are. If you are unsure about how much to feed the puppy, you should consult your veterinarian for help. Treats can be used in moderation to train your young puppy and motivate them to partake in good behavior , or they can just be used as a snack throughout the day. A 4-month-old German Shepherd can walk for about one mile at a time before they become tired. Going for a thirty-minute walk twice a day will be sufficient exercise for your puppy to keep them nice and strong without overworking them. Fi smart dog collars make it easier than ever. Once your german shepherd is six months old, you can switch to an adult dog food that contains less protein than puppy food. As for treats, you can give your German Shepherd puppy three to five small snacks a day if they are eating the right amount of dog food at each meal. You should never overfeed them or feed them human food because it will make their joints weaker and cause obesity problems as well as other health issues later in life! How much do 4 month old german shepherds sleep? Four month old german shepherds can sleep up to 18 hours a day, but this will depend on their environment. Generally speaking if your four-month old shepherd is getting plenty of exercise at playtime, they should be fine sleeping for many hours during the night as well. If this happens, you should contact your local veterinarian to discuss options on how to help your four-month old shepherd get the rest they need. How much exercise does a 4 month old german shepherd need? A four-month old shepherd is still quite young, and most of the time, they will be running around with their siblings. This means that they need to get a lot of exercise in order for them not to go stir crazy! At this stage, it is recommended that they get at least two hours of exercise each day. This will give you more control over them when they are doing anything that involves their mouth, including biting and chewing on toys or objects. You can also try using a spray bottle to stop them from biting. And finally, make sure you are giving your dog enough attention when they are doing what is right. If he wants to play or chew on something but gets no reaction from you, then his behavior will only continue to get worse. These are some effective ways that you can train your four-month old shepherd to stop biting. Follow these tips and tricks, and they should be able to break the habit in no time! This time period can be described as an adventure, where the pup will learn many new things from his human family. As exciting as this experience may seem for both owner and dog, it can also be challenging at times to handle your pet during these stages. He may suddenly begin to exhibit temper tantrums or other undesirable behaviors that are hard to control, especially if you have never raised one before. This can be particularly true for those who raise German shepherds, which are known to be one of the hardest breeds to train. Potty accidents in your house are a common four-month old german shepherd behaviour problem that many pet owners often experience. However, this issue should not cause too much a concern. Most dogs will eventually learn the proper way to go potty outdoors, as long as their owners are patient and persistent enough. Potty training your four-month old german shepherd may not be easy at first, but most pet parents agree that it becomes progressively easier with time. Just make sure you never show anger towards your dog and always be very encouraging when he does something right. This can become a habit that will prove difficult to control once it becomes an issue for your pet. Most young German shepherds may nip and bite hands and feet while playing at an early age four months old. This can be a frustrating issue for new pet owners as they have never been around dogs before. But do not worry, this is no reason to give up on your four-month old german shepherd just yet! In fact, there are a few things you can do to help correct this behaviour. First of all, never scream or shout at your pet when he bites or nips you while playing. This may cause him some fear and will only make the problem worse in time. Instead, show your four-month old german shepherd that biting hands is not acceptable by simply ignoring him for a few seconds. This will let your pet know that biting hands is not something to be proud of. Problem 03 — Chewing on Furniture or Other Objects Chewing furniture or other objects can become another frustrating issue with four-month old german shepherds. This can occur when your pet becomes teething, which is a common problem for German shepherd pups before they reach five months of age. Four month old german shepherds often chew on furniture or other objects to ease the pain from their developing teeth. Chewing also helps them remove excess baby teeth that may still be in their mouths. However, you should not let this become a habit as it can cause serious damage to your home and belongings over time. This will help discourage him from chewing on anything he is not supposed to. You can also give him toys that are designed for chewing, such as a rubber ball or bone-shaped chew toy. This is another common problem many pet parents have to deal with from time to time. Inappropriate barking at strange objects can become a serious problem for your four-month old german shepherd, as it will only get worse over time if you do not correct him right away. You should never allow him to bark excessively, or he may develop the habit of doing so whenever something unfamiliar enters his sight. Your pet may bark excessively when he sees something new because it is natural for them to be suspicious of things they are not familiar with. This should not be mistaken as aggression, just a sign that your four-month old german shepherd needs more training and socialization. Keep in mind that barking can also become habitual if you do nothing about this particular issue. It is important to train your four-month old german shepherd right away that excessive barking at strange objects will not be tolerated. Conclusion: If you are having any of these common four month old German Shepherd behaviour problems, try using some of the tips mentioned above and make sure to properly socialize him with other pets and strangers on a regular basis. A guide on housetraining is a great place to start and can be very useful. The cartilage in their ears will strengthen around five to six months old, and they should start standing tall after that time frame passes. This can also happen if you leave your german shepherd in an environment with loud sounds for too long. Loud noises can cause the ear to flatten out because their ears are sensitive and they become overwhelmed by all of the noise around them. If you notice this behavior, make sure that you do not play any music or expose them to loud noises until their ears start to perk up. You can also try to feed them during this stage as it gives their ears something else that they need to focus on, instead of the noise around them. Peter My name is Peter and I am a dog lover. I have two German Shepherd dogs, one of which is called Biscuit because his coat is very light with brown patches. My wife and I moved from the UK to Ohio where we now live with our two daughters. We love squash on weekends and following the English Premier League closely! Previous Article. Final Thoughts It is important to know that a 4 month old German Shepherd differs from a puppy of an earlier age. Here, we want to tell you about these differences, about the changes in diet, exercise, and interaction with people and other animals. These doggies are very cute but they do not look like young puppies anymore. They are pretty massive animals that overgrow one foot of height. It is about pounds kg for males and pounds .It means that a puppy gained another 10 pounds during the last month. The puppy grows rapidly. Your boy can be inches cm and the girl inches cm at the shoulder. The coat has changed. They start shedding a lot like an adult dog, too. So, it is very important to brush them regularly — everyday brushing is necessary during this period. The skin is rather sensitive, so loose hair can cause allergies when it contacts the skin and the air. Teething continues. Adult teeth are replacing the milk ones. That is the process lasting for more months. The ears start perking up. Though, they are not stably erect at this age. The ears also can perk up and then fall and lay flat. It is a norm. Puppies at this age do not have strong cartilage. It will strengthen at the age of 5- 6 months. However, if your puppy lives in an environment with very loud sounds, its ears can flatten out because the noise does not allow them to perk up. You should do obedience training, a lot of walking and jogging, playing in the backyard, and other activities. Your puppy already knows that it should be protective of the members of your family. However, it can bark a lot because it is time to develop its vocal cords. Teach it not to do this so much. It is very easy to train a 16 week old German Shepherd puppy because it has a strong desire to please you. Remember that you need strict discipline because your pet can display signs of disobedience at this age as any teenager does. Your 4 month old GSD sleeps about 18 hours per day. Though, the number of hours can depend on the environment because it does not sleep so much if it has many things around to explore. Nevertheless, some puppies prefer short naps in the daytime too. In any case, let your pet have a good rest. Discuss these changes with your veterinarian to pick out the most appropriate daily schedule for better rest. Your puppy can walk effortlessly for about a mile 1. It is always ready to go outside and accompany you wherever you may go. Though, do not overload it with walking. Several walks during the day are a better option. It should get about 2 hours of active playing every day. The puppy learns a lot during its first four months. Everything seems an adventure to it. It is an exciting experience for both your doggy and you. Though, its behavior can be a bit unpredictable at times. So, you need to control it. In general, your 4 month old GSD puppy is entirely healthy, and it continues growing quickly. You need to weigh and measure your pet every time you come to the vet, or you can do it yourself at home. You may also need to get a DNA test to know what health issues to expect from your doggy when it is over 5 years old. This age is the proper time for having the third set of vaccines because they have had the first two already. The third set includes DHPP and rabies. Even if your puppy is healthy and active, you need to continuously watch out for possible disorders. You need to show your puppy to the vet, if you notice such things as changes in behavioral and sleeping patterns, sneezing and coughing, runny eyes or nose, losing weight, decrease in appetite, and other digestion issues, such as diarrhea or vomiting, red and swollen gums, heavy breathing, and excessive urination. Keep your doggy clean and protected. You do not need to bathe it very often — it can be harmful to the production of the natural oils that protect the skin. Brush your puppy every day now because of its excessive shedding. This is connected with the change of the coat from the puppy to an adult one. Grooming and brushing are very important parts of the care. You may also need the help of special grooming salons. Feeding Your 4 month old GSD is a good eater because it grows a lot. It should be fed not fewer than 3 times a day. It should take cups of kibble of natural food per meal. At the end of the fourth month, you can start the transition to two feedings per day. Do not rush to switch your pet to adult food. You can do it only when it is 6-month-old when its growth slows down a bit. You can also offer your GS puppy some treats. Never give your puppy human food or human treats — the latter is rather dangerous and can cause severe health issues. Avoid overfeeding, too. Your dog should not suffer from obesity when it is an adult because there are bad health conditions caused by it. If you decide to feed your puppy a natural raw diet, be careful about its nutritious value and high quality. It can consist of meats, vegetables, and fruits, but nothing fatty and toxic like junk food. Training There are several behavioral problems that you need to handle. The first of them is, of course, potty accidents in the home. Unfortunately, such accidents are pretty common at this age. You need to train your pet to do all its business outdoors. Since German Shepherds are very clever, it will understand very soon what you want from it. You need to be patient and persistent, though. Never show irritation or anger when an accident happens. You need to be encouraging if your puppy does everything correctly during its potty walks, but never punish it if something has gone wrong. One more unpleasant thing at this age is biting and nipping your hands or feet. You need to control it while playing to prevent the formation of a biting habit. Never scream or shout at your pet when it bites you. Your little one can be frightened, and the problem may become worse over months. It will let your puppy know that it is doing something wrong. Chewing furniture or things around can also be frustrating. Your puppy is teething, so it is a common thing now. Chewing helps it remove the milk teeth easily. Keep most things in your house out of its reach. Buy some chew toys, for example, a rubber bone or ball to discourage chewing things. A 4 month old German Shepherd puppy can bark excessively at all unknown or suspicious objects. Barking all the time can become a serious issue for you and your pet over time. Teach your doggy not to bark at something unfamiliar. It only means that your pet needs more training and socialization. Your Shepherd dog at this age does not look like that cute fluffy toy-like cub you once saw and liked. It begins to shape as an adult dog. Now, it continues to grow rapidly. So, the males can be inches cm and the females grow as tall as inches cm at the shoulder. How much should a 4 month old German Shepherd weight? Follow the weight of your pet by measuring it regularly. The puppies at this age grow very fast, so they tend to overeat. You should give your pet so much food to let it grow healthily and free from obesity. You can see that your doggy has gained about 10 pounds since the previous month. How much should a 4 month old German Shepherd eat? Your puppy should eat cups of kibble per one meal three times per day. It grows very fast, so it needs a lot of nutrients and minerals for its ears, teeth, and coat. If you feed it natural food, you can add some supplements for puppies to its meals. How far can a 4 month old German Shepherd walk? However, it does not mean that you need to walk it for such a distance every time. Consider two walks of half an hour per day if you want your puppy to grow healthy and strong, and develop all its perfect physical characteristics. Final Thoughts You can see that raising a 4 month old German Shepherd puppy and taking care of it is a responsible and complicated task. You need to know all the peculiarities of this age, so we hope that this article will help you. You should be very patient and persistent to train your dog, do a lot of exercises with your pet, socialize it, and make friends with it. In a while, you will obtain the most loyal, intelligent, and protective friend for your family and yourself. David W. I admire German Shepherds. They are magnificent dogs! I have been dealing with dogs, namely German Shepherds, throughout my life. I have been working part-time as a dog trainer and instructor for about 5 years, dealing mainly with German Shepherds. So I know a bit about these animals. Therefore, I decided to share my knowledge and experience about this fantastic breed. If you need help with advice and care tips or want to know more about German Shepherd dogs, welcome to this blog. A 4 month old German Shepherd has braved the waters of puppy hood and made its way into the juvenile stage of growth. They are still super cute but starting to outgrow some of those adorable puppy dog looks. They have grown massively since day 1, surpassing the foot mark at the shoulder and almost reaching half of their full adult weight. A 4 month old German Shepherd is two months in to the juvenile stage and may act out daily with some unwanted behavior. Similar to the 3 month mark, you will need some serious patience to endure these little buggers for the next few months. Luckily, the 6 month mark and the end of the juvenile stage is right around the corner. At this age they are looking more and more like an adult and less like that precious little pup they were just a few months earlier. That being said their behavior will still be puppy like and they will most likely still be biting, chewing and jumping on anyone or anything they can get their little paws on. As we discussed in the previous month, you can used different techniques for preventing them from biting you. That being said, this behavior is a normal part of their development. This is a common way for them to release all of that pent up puppy energy. Along with this playful disposition comes some roughhousing with their siblings or people. This is a great time to take advantage of that energy and play some tug-o-war with their favorite toy. Hang in there, the biting should subside when they are done teething at 6 months. However, you may sustain some damage along the way in the form of scratches. You may even lose a few pair of pants due to rips and tears. This is a critical stage in their behavioral development. Make sure you are consistently training them in obedience and bite inhibition. Contact a local trainer for help if you cannot do it on your own. Physical Development: At month 4, they are still growing at a pretty rapid pace. Males will be in the range of 11 to 14 inches at the shoulder. Females will be maybe an inch behind and in the range of 10 to 12 inches at the shoulder. They have probably packed on another 10 pounds in weight, growing another pound every 3 days. Females will be close behind, weighing in the range of 31 to 35 pounds. They will continue to teeth as their adult teeth begin to replace their puppy teeth. This will continue for approximately 4 more months. Their ears should be perking up and their adult hair should be replacing their puppy coat. You may notice a lot more shedding during this time. Not to fret, this is part of the natural process. Make sure you give them a nice brushing once a day during this extra shedding. Nutrition: A German Shepherd this young is growing fast and needs a consistent diet of high-quality puppy kibble or homemade food to sustain their caloric intake and provide them the necessary energy. If you can, we recommend feeding them an all-natural raw diet of healthy meats, fruits and vegetables. Just make sure you are feeding them the right foods. Stay away from any toxic foods and avoid giving them too many fatty treats. GSDs are already prone to health conditions from their size. Obesity can increase their chances of developing other diseases such as arthritis, diabetes, hypertension and even cancer. This can decrease their lifespan and reduce their quality of life overall. For standard puppy kibble, feed them two cups of food, three times daily. Make sure you stay on a consistent schedule. Health: A young German Shepherd at this age should be healthy and growing quickly. Document their size month to month , to make sure they are in line with their height and weight for their age. They should have already had their first two sets of vaccines. Provided you are feeding them a nice lean healthy diet and they are staying active, they should be very healthy at this point. There is no need to worry about any significant diseases this young. If you do want to take a preventative approach, you can get a DNA test which can possibly predict certain conditions such as degenerative myelopathy. You can also look at their history and bloodline for any predictors of possible health issues. Even if they are healthy, you always want to stay on the lookout for any possible sickness that may arise. There are lost of possible symptoms that reveal sickness in your GSD puppy. Here are some things to look for: Change in their normal sleeping patterns Coughing, gagging or sneezing excessively Decreased appetite. Soft treats Hard treats like bones. At four months old, your GSD puppy has a full set of teeth and may have built a chewing obsession. He may be chewing anything and everything. When serving him chew bones , trim any fats or meat to avoid choking hazards. The chew bones help clean their teeth as they chew on the bone! Avoid feeding 4-month-old German Shepherds chocolate since it contains methylxanthines , which can be toxic to dogs if consumed in large amounts How to groom a 4-month-old German shepherd Grooming at 4 months is an important part of parenting. A German shepherd should be groomed on average every two to four weeks, more if they get muddy or swim often. The best way to start grooming your puppy with no hair yet is by rubbing them down with a towel. You should be gentle because they are a little sensitive at this age. In the next few months, your German shepherd puppy will be all grown, and the level of grooming required will change. If anything, they are awake for much longer A healthy 4-month-old German shepherd will sleep about 13 hours a day. This is less than many other breeds because they are usually awake and play for an hour or two before going to bed again. As he sleeps, you can cuddle, groom, or do light exercises to help them sleep comfortably. How tall do 4-month-old German shepherds get? They may be taller or shorter depending on their genes! They are generally very energetic and playful with their family. They can be a little shy at first, but as they get used to you they will become more loving. A 4-month-old German shepherd will need exercise every day. A good idea is to start your pup out with short walks and playtime, gradually adding more intense activity as he gets older. Also, every 4-month-old German Shepherd puppy needs a safe, enclosed space in which to play. If your backyard is well-enclosed, you can play with your puppy or let him run and explore without hurting himself or getting himself into mischief. Supplies to Buy for a 4-Month-Old German Shepherd Some of the supplies you should buy for your 4-month-old puppy include food, bowls for food and water, a bed, a crate, toys to chew on and play with, and grooming supplies such as a brush and comb. You will also need to buy puppy equipment such as strollers, leash and harness, collar, and harness. Check out these supplies that you can buy for your puppy:. Female German Shepherds may be slightly smaller, averaging 10 to 12 inches in height and 31 to 35 pounds in weight. However, there is some variation between individual dogs, so these numbers should be used as a general guide, not a hard-and-fast rule. German Shepherds are a large breed of dog, and they continue to grow and fill out until they reach maturity and become adult German Shepherds at around the month mark. During this time, they may gain an additional inch or two in height and 20 to 30 pounds. After they reach adulthood, their size will remain relatively stable. It means they have high energy needs and require a diet rich in protein and calories. The amount of food will vary depending on the age and activity level of the dog. Feed your puppies three times daily and adult dogs twice daily. For example, a highly active German Shepherd may need up to 2, calories daily, while a less active dog may only need 1, calories daily. A rule of thumb is that for each pound the dog weighs, this requires about calories daily. Regardless of the caloric intake, all German Shepherds should have a diet rich in protein and low in fat. Physical and Behavioral Changes At four months old, German Shepherds are just beginning to enter their teenage years. Here are some physical and behavioral changes you may see in your four-month-old German Shepherd. First, their energy levels will start to increase. Ensure you provide plenty of opportunities for exercise, such as walks, runs, and interactive games. Second, their coats will begin to change. German Shepherds have two coats — a dense undercoat and a softer outer coat. This process can take several months, so be patient while your pup grows into its new look. German Shepherds are known for being loyal and obedient dogs, but they may start testing boundaries at four months old. Finally, their behavior may become more independent. Be consistent with puppy training and rewards; your pup will quickly learn what you expect from them. Positive Reward-Based Obedience Training Reward-based training is an effective way to teach your dog obedience commands. It is especially well suited for puppies, who are often motivated by food. For a 4-month-old German Shepherd puppy, you can start by teaching basic commands such as sit, down, and stay. Once your puppy has mastered these commands, you can begin to add more advanced tricks to their repertoire. As your puppy learns new tricks, be sure to offer them plenty of rewards in the form of treats, praise, or both. Your puppy will soon respond to your commands with patience and consistent practice like a pro. Fur Care One of the most distinctive features of a German Shepherd is its lush, thick fur. Fluffy fur is cute but requires special care to ensure that it stays healthy and looks its best. For example, German Shepherds should be brushed frequently, at least once weekly. It helps to remove tangles and knots and can also help to distribute natural oils throughout the coat. However, avoid over-bathing, as this can strip away protective oils and leave the coat dull and dry. Nail Care Another essential part of grooming is nail care. German Shepherds have relatively quick-growing nails, so trim them regularly. If left untrimmed, the nails can become overgrown and uncomfortable for your pup. In extreme cases, they may even start to curl under and grow into the pads of the feet. You can do this at home using a dog nail trimmer or take them to a professional groomer. Either way, avoid cutting the nails too short, as this can be painful for your pup. Dental Care Another important aspect of grooming is dental care. German Shepherds are prone to dental problems, such as plaque buildup and gum disease. In addition, you can give them special dog treats designed to clean their teeth and promote oral health. It can be done at home using a dog ear cleaner and cotton balls. Apply the cleaner to the inside of the ear, and then use the cotton ball to wipe away any dirt or debris. If you notice any of these symptoms, take them to the vet for further treatment. Chew Toys for Your 4-Month-Old German Shepherd At four months old, a German Shepherd is still in the teething stage and will need to chew toys to help relieve the pain and discomfort of growing new teeth. The best chew toys for 4-month-old German Shepherds are those made of durable material that can withstand a lot of chewing. Nylon and rubber are two good options. You should also look for chew toys specifically designed for teething puppies. These toys often have ridges or nubs that help to massage the gums and promote healthy teeth growth. In addition to helping with teething pain, chew toys can also help prevent boredom and destructive chewing behavior. Be sure to provide your pup with plenty of chew toys to keep them happy and healthy. For example, a German Shepherd is susceptible to hip and elbow dysplasia , which can cause joint pain and mobility issues. They are also at risk for bloat, a severe condition that can occur when the stomach twists or fills with gas. German Shepherds are also susceptible to skin allergies and ear infections. Luckily, there are ways that owners can take to help prevent these health problems. For example, feeding your German Shepherd a high-quality diet and providing plenty of exercises can help reduce the risk of hip and elbow dysplasia. Keeping their stomachs empty before vigorous exercise can help prevent bloat. And regular grooming can help reduce the risk of skin allergies and ear infections. They will be able to provide you with more information and answer any questions you may have. Most of this sleep will be during the day, with short naps between play periods. It is usual for puppies as they are growing rapidly and their bodies need lots of rest. At night, four-month-old German Shepherds will typically sleep for several hours. If your puppy is sleeping more or less than this, it is best to consult with your local veterinarian to rule out any health problems. Puppies need short bursts of energetic play several times daily, while adults can handle more prolonged periods of moderate activity. Your German Shepherd should be getting at least 30 minutes of exercise per day at four months old. It can be through walks, runs, or interactive games. If possible, try to break up their training into two or three shorter sessions throughout the day. As they get older and more confident, you can gradually increase the amount and intensity of their exercise. Just make sure not to overdo it, as this can lead to joint problems later in life.
