The classic game of fetch fits into this category and is a good choice since most dogs find it to be very enjoyable and it helps strengthen the owner-dog bond. In addition, fetch can be played both indoors and out, making this perfect no matter the weather. Tips for Walking Your Pug By following some easy guidelines, you can take your Pug for walks knowing that you are allowing your dog to reap the benefits of exercise in a safe manner. When exercising a Pug, breathing-related issues must always stay a top priority. And, the accessories that you place on your Pug play a huge role in this. On the first day, go half the distance and see how your Pug did. You can then add on more distance the next time. With your little guy or gal on a harness and in the heeling position previous tip 1 , you can speed up, slow down, go around telephone poles, swerve around bushes, etc. This can be played in many places including your own yard or a park or can be kept inside on days with bad weather as long as you have room in your house. Some dogs naturally know how to play and others need a bit of time to catch on. Here are some tips to keep this a fun and beneficial activity. If this is going to replace a walk, set a timer for 15 to 20 minutes. The more animated you are and the more you let yourself laugh, the more your Pug will want to chase after the fetch toy and enjoying bringing it back to you for another go. Even if your Pug can't catch the ball in the air or is a bit confused about what to do, your encouraging words will keep things moving along. Give praise for 'good tries' and effort that your Pug puts into the game. And, offer a reward treat when the game is complete. A fun fetch toy for outside games is the Chuckit! Flying Squirrel Spinning Toy ; this brightly colored fabric toy does some pretty wild soaring and is easy for a dog to mouth. And, if you have some space in your house like a large room or a long hallway, you can play fetch with your Pug using a toy like the Chuckit! Indoor Roller Dog Toy. There is an optional launcher that shoots the ball for you, if your arm needs a rest. While you do want to keep your Pug moving for at least 15 minutes, it's best to end the game while your little guy or gal is still having fun. This will help your puppy or dog look forward to the next session. If your Pug has a hard time accepting that the game is over and is clamoring at you to continue, you can give one last throw and then offer a reward treat as a sign that the session is truly over. Switching to a new activity like brushing the coat can help your Pug make the transition. Alternative Ways to Keep a Pug Active 1 Dog parks can be a great place for a Pug to move around if he is otherwise reluctant at home. Interacting with other dogs can be motivation to run around and can be a good way to build social skills. You will want to be sure to visit a park that has separate areas for dogs based on size. Never let your Pug into an area with much larger dogs. Keep an eye on your Pug to assess breathing and separate him for breaks and re-hydration as needed. Keeping visits to the park to 1 hour is a good time limit. This is a low-impact exercise that is sometimes used in recovery therapy for dogs being treated for joint issues. This said, since the Pug has a barrel-shaped body, this breed is not the most proficient swimmer. Play it safe by having your Pug wear a canine life vest and staying by their side for close supervision. Be sure to rinse your dog off afterward to make sure chlorine and pool chemicals are washed from the skin and coat. Pugs can go on hikes and explore many places with their humans. Such was the case with Zander and Xavier, two adorable German Shepherds who were dropped off at a shelter back in early .Originally the North Carolina shelter thought the two puppies might have mange. It is an infection of the hair follicles that causes it not to grow. However, they can also be a sign that something more prominent is going on with their health. When Alopecia is caused genetically, there is no cure. But when it is caused by an underlying issue, certain treatments can help heal the hair loss. Certain medications are used such as antibiotics, anti-parasitics, and anti-fungals. In the case of Zander and Xavier, no cure was available and they are bald and hairless to this day. Tell us about the first time you saw Apollo and the impression he made on you. I had just been diagnosed with alopecia a few weeks before The Dodo released the first video of Apollo and his brother. I immediately knew that I had to at least apply for this puppy because our situations were so similar, and I knew I could provide the best life for him. How old is he now and how is he doing? He just turned 2 years old in October. He could not be thriving better than he is now! What does a daily routine look like for him? After that is breakfast, once breakfast is over, we normally walk miles, or run .Sometimes we change things up and will find an empty field to bust out the Chuck-It and throw tennis balls for a little while. As the day winds down, he gets his dinner. What are the advantages and disadvantages of owning a hairless German Shepherd? Number one advantage: no shedding, period. I know everyone thinks their pet has the most personality and is the quirkiest thing in the world, but with him I truly feel that is the absolute truth. Just the other day, he was running zoomies in the house and for whatever reason, he chose to grab one of my socks out of my dirty clothes hamper and dropped it near his toy bin, just the one sock! About four hours later, Apollo was back to zooming around the house again and after about ten minutes I walked into the living room and found the exact same sock next to his toy bin again. He literally had to dig past other clothes to grab this one sock, but for whatever reason he decided that was the exact piece of clothing he wanted. You helped him find a new home. In what ways has he helped you in your life? He was one of the biggest saving graces in what is probably the most vulnerable time of my life. When I was diagnosed with alopecia and went from a full head of hair to being completely bald in less than two months, I had an identity crisis. People that had known me for years were passing me in hallways, unable to recognize me due to my drastic change in appearance. He helped me accept the new look that had been thrust upon me and helped me remember that it truly is the inside that matters. Apollo looks different than .He helped me to adopt the same attitude for life, to accept myself however I looked and to not be bogged down with what other people might think when they look at me. Is there any advice you can give to a potential hairless German Shepherd dog owner? Be prepared for weekly baths with special shampoo. In general, I would also just urge people thinking about getting a dog to really do their research on the breed.
