Once your dog has learned some commands and tricks, you can stand and begin training from a higher level. Stand your ground. Small dogs get away with a lot of things because of their size. Stand your ground and stay true to the training. Housetraining small dogs is different. Crate training is one of the best ways to housetrain your puppy. It loves its human and will try its best to please its owner. However, you should be ready to provide your pet with lots of love and attention. Children should also be taught how to handle this dog properly. This means families with very young children might not be a good match for this dog. A Chihuahua Pug cross is an ideal pet for apartment dwellers, although it will thrive in all types of homes. It has to live indoors as its small stature means it can easily wiggle out of a fence. This dog also prefers warm weather, which is why it loves to snuggle so much.

Breeders have a pivotal role in helping them become small dogs with big personalities during the eight-week countdown from birth until going to new homes. These pups are more active, more exploratory, calmer, and less distracted when working. They should experience different textured surfaces, such as carpet, tile, grass, and concrete, and be desensitized to household sounds, such as a vacuum cleaner, mixer, television, and music. Maturing between 9 and 12 months of age, these breeds should be fed a complete and balanced growth food specially formulated for toy and small breed puppies for the first year. This requires energy, thus they need a food containing the right amount of the energy-supplying nutrients, such as protein, which will help support growing muscles and tissue development, and fat, which aids in palatability. Also, the smaller kibble size of toy and small breed puppy foods is easier for puppies to chew and encourages acceptability. Note that toy breed puppies should continue nursing until they are 6 to 8 weeks old, as these breeds do not have the enzymes necessary to produce glucose from the liver until they are older. Wean puppies by preparing a gruel mixture by grinding puppy food in a blender and then soaking it in warm water. Initially feed puppies the gruel mixture one time a day and then go to two times a day. In between feedings, puppies should have access to a dry feeder containing puppy food kibble. Establish a feeding routine as puppies get older to help keep the digestive system regular and make housetraining easier. Feed three to four equal-portioned meals a day, not exceeding their daily recommended intake, to help avoid juvenile or puppy hypoglycemia due to low glucose, or sugar, which results in weakness from not getting enough nutrients to meet energy needs. Toy breed puppies may need four to six meals a day. Do not supplement with additional minerals and vitamins if you feed a completed and balanced puppy or growth food, unless your veterinarian advises doing so. If you follow the food manufacturing guidelines on how much to feed based on the weight and age of the puppy, this is a great place to start. Consulting your veterinarian, you can then make adjustments as a puppy develops considering its weight gain and addressing any concerns that arise. The time and energy spent starting at day one in the whelping box until puppies leave with their new families is well worth the effort. I write this with the poodle breed in mind but have found it to pertain to other breeds that we have bred in the past. When finding yourself with a newborn litter its very important to keep a close eye on their weight every day to make sure they are gaining properly. If your puppy isnt gaining weight like they should then I suggest hand feeding and supplementing your puppy. You can find recipies for doing so on the previous page. If they gain a little more than that its ok. Some tiny ones are a bit slower to gain weight. The tinier the puppy usually this is anything under 4 oz I always supplement. Suggested weight gain for new born minaiture poodle puppies I like to see my miniature poodle puppies gain atleast an ounce per day up until the age of 4 weeks. Once again if they gain a little more than that its ok. Usually miniature poodle puppies are around oz at birth unless you have a very large litter. A large litter would be 8 or over. Anything under that oz and again I would supplement. Suggested weight gain in standard poodle puppies Where standards can have very large litters of up to 11 or more puppies you can get quite a variety of weight ranges. The smaller the litter the more likely the puppies are to be large at birth. Usually you will get puppies anywhere from 10 oz to over one lb. Its a general rule of thumb that a standard puppy should gain 1 lb per week. Many standard puppies will be one lb and one week, two lbs at two weeks, and so on. Dont worry if you have a smaller litter and they are a bit bigger than that. If you have a huge litter its a good idea to supplement the litter to help your bitch out.
