There is a lot of talk about black Boxers dogs; some potential puppy buyers will actively seek out this colored puppy, but their searching is in vain. It may be hard to believe it when you see photos, but black boxers do not exist — the color gene responsible for black coat color does not exist within the breed. Brindle is a pattern of color, it is a striping effect. With most brindle Boxers, the dark stripes are clearly over a fawn background. However, with Boxer dogs that appear to have a black coat, this is due to super heavy reserve brindling. In fact, it can be so dark and so thick, that you cannot see any fawn beneath it. This gives the dog a very dark coat that does indeed appear to be black. Here, we'll go into the facts a bit more to talk about why black cannot exist with the breed and some myths are swirl about regarding this perceived coat color. Why Colors are Misinterpreted It is very easy to see a dog and immediately assume that he is a certain color, based on what your eyes are telling you. However, with some breeds, the Boxer included, you must take a second look. It is sometimes only when you realize how brindle can cause an effect of sorts, that makes a first impression of black, that it starts to make sense. In addition, some Boxers are given the term of black; however, in many cases, this is a shortened term that comes from longer 'black brindle'. The base color of all purebred Boxers is fawn. Brindles are actually fawn with a brindle marking. Those markings are made of a pattern for fur consisting of black striping which covers the fawn… Sometimes just a bit lightly brindled and sometimes a lot a heavily brindled dog. A black Boxer with white flash? Your eyes are playing tricks on you. This pup is super dark reverse brindle with white markings. Cassandra, 5 months old Photo couresty of Christopher Many wonder if perhaps there were black Boxers that were mostly bred out of the lines and that perhaps now and again a dog with a black coat shows up somewhere. However, if we look to the record keeping of the past century, we can see that this is not the case. In this year time period, a black Boxer appeared once, however there is a catch to this. In the Germany, in the late 's a Boxer was paired with a mixed dog that was part Bulldog and part Schnauzer. The resulting litter had puppies that had black coats. Since another breed was introduced into the bloodline, they were not purebreds. These dogs were not used for any further breeding and therefore did not have any influence on genetics going forward. Once in a while there will be a breeder that claims to have black Boxers and will point to this one incident long ago as evidence that black does indeed run in the bloodline. However, since those mixed dogs with black coats were never used for any sort of develop program this simply does not hold true. Another element that shows that this coloring does not exist in the Boxer line is the rule that the Munich Boxer Club created in .This group had stringent control over breeding and development of Boxers in Germany and set the guidelines for the standard, conformation and all elements regarding appearance including coloring. This group did not wish for any experimenting to be done that would introduce the color black and for this reason they made a clear rule that black Boxers would not be accepted. Some make the argument that programs may have ignored this ruling and still attempted to breed black Boxers. However it would have not been in their best interest to do so and additionally, any resulting dogs would have not been part of the Munich Boxer Club since they couldn't have been registered there. This means that any such hypothetical dogs could not have genetically been included in the Boxer's bloodline since they would have been barred from any programs that were developing and perfecting the breed. So, now that we know: This color does not exist in the line The only record of any black Boxer in the last century was a mixed dog and not a purebred Guidelines and strict rules of of the club in Munich that was the foundation of today's Boxers clearly excluded black Boxers. And it is also fair to say: The chance of there being some odd, rare gene mutation that brings black into the coat is extraordinarily rare; mathematically the odds are so low that this can be ruled out Black Boxer puppies cannot be born due to a hidden gene; this is because black is dominant over all other colors. It cannot be recessive, it always comes out over others Why are some people still adamant that this coloring exists? Diesel, at 2 years old Photo courtesy of Brittany Calvert This leads us to the conclusion of only two possibilities in this regard: A 'true' black Boxer simply cannot be a purebred. It is assumed that in this case, it would be done to sell the pups at a higher cost. Some elements to ponder.Their registration papers do not have that color code as an option. Therefore, even if someone verbally dubs a Boxer to have a black coat, the dog - if registered with a recognized club - would officially be another color; and that would most likely be brindle. Since the pup would be handed over to new owners with papers stating he was not black, how can they simultaneously claim to have black Boxer dogs? And this of course, is very unethical. In Summary Every being whether it is a mammal, like a dog, human, etc. These genes determine everything about the being, from skin color to the number legs to where the eyes are.Genes control coat color in dogs, too. In order for a dog to be black, that breed of dog must contain the gene for having a black coat. Boxer dogs do not have that gene. So, there cannot be any black Boxer dogs. It is genetically impossible. A Boxer that is black, or true black with brown points, for example, MUST be a mixed breed or a heavily brindled dog. Many people have made claims to owning black boxer dogs. In the boxer community, this can be a cause for argument, but the fact remains that it is genetically impossible for a boxer to be black in color. The color gene responsible for a dog being black does not exist within the breed. If you own a boxer that appears to be black in color, there are two possible explanations for this: Your boxer is not purebred It has been known to happen that somewhere down the line a boxer was bred with a mixed-breed dog and her puppies still have that boxer look. When breeds are mixed, certain genes can be inherited, like the gene that causes the black color. Your boxer is a very heavy brindle reverse brindle Brindle boxers are basically fawn colored with black stripes. In some dogs, the brindle is so dominant it gives the appearance of being black. It is the base color and is dominant in the majority of boxer dogs, as well as other dogs such as Great Danes and Pugs. Brindle Photo by Gunnshots Brindle boxers are basically fawn colored boxers with black stripes. These black stripes can vary in intensity, but they are never so thick that the dog is considered black in color. What About White Boxers? Although it is true that white boxer dogs are indeed a recognized group of boxers, they are technically not white in color.

Temperament: Alert, protective and reliable. However, you will certainly get a tall dog with a very muscular build. To see one standing on the front porch and guarding its home is quite a sight. They have a large, broad muzzle and very strong jawbones. Their eyes are dark and its floppy ears can stand erect or fold over at the tips. Height and Weight Both male and females stand between inches tall however, females are usually a bit shorter. Females will weigh between pounds, will males weighing up to 95 pounds. Breed Colors and Coat Brown is the typical base fur color for this breed — it can be anything from chocolate brown to a light tan. Black can appear in large patches or as a mask over their face and muzzle. In some cases, you may see white or light grey patches. If they inherit a coat from the German Shepherd parent it will be a short, fluffy double coat. Whereas a coat from a Boxer will be smooth and closely cropped to the skin. Mixes will a double coat will shed moderately and those with single coats even less. They will need to be brushed once a week and daily during shedding season. Both parent breeds are commonly employed in this type of work. What makes the Boxer Shepherd so unique is its mischievous, playful attitude in addition to being a hard worker. Both German Shepherds and Boxers have an unfair reputation for being aggressive. In reality, a well trained Shepherd, Boxer, or mix is extremely even tempered and friendly. The Boxer is the 11th most popular dog breed in the United States, as of .The German Shepherd is the 2nd most popular breed. You can expect them to be a bit of a goofball as well as a loyal guard dog. These dogs are not aggressive by nature, but they will bite if they are provoked. Your relationship with them should be one of mutual respect and understanding. You need to keep in mind that working dogs always want something to do and will have high energy levels — so you will need to keep them as active as possible throughout the day. A well trained dog will be very quiet and only bark when something is wrong. However it will take time to train a puppy out of their natural suspicion of strangers. Expect a bit of barking here and there as your puppy learns who they can and cannot trust. Since these pups are so suspicious of other people, early socialization is a must. Even socialized puppies will remain distant to people outside of their home. Finally, you should know that this dog does not like to be left alone — so you should find a good dog sitter if you are away from home often. A German Shepherd Boxer Mix makes a great family dog for the right type of family. Apartments and urban areas do not make the best home for one. Your dog will need their own outdoor space to let out all of their energy. If you have ever owned a German Shepherd or a Boxer, a mix will not be too much more difficult to manage. Keeping this pup active and entertained is the biggest challenge for the breed. They are not for owners with inactive lifestyles. Exercise Requirements This very active dog will want to be on its feet for most of the day. If you are a born outdoorsman, your furry friend will be eager to join you on all of your adventures. They need at least 90 minutes of exercise each day. This could be with a 30 minute walk and then an hour of play. Your dog will be up for just about anything, but running is their very favorite thing to do. Try a game of tag with your pooch, or a game of hide and seek. You can also cater to their love of agility with an exciting backyard hurdle course. If you live on a farm then they will help you tend your livestock just like their Shepherd ancestors would do. Number of Walks Per Day: .Grooming and Shedding Their short coat makes grooming fairly easy. Once a week brushing is fine for most of the year, but you will have to brush them daily during these shedding seasons. As tempting as it may be to stick a dirty dog right in the tub, you should only bathe them once every 3 months. Too much bathing will wash out the oils in their skin. Also, make sure to get between those big floppy ears. Feeding and Diet When you have an energetic dog it is important to fuel their day the right way. This breed will do well with a raw or whole meat diet. Protein should make up most of their diet. Carbs and fats should be derived from natural sources such as fruits and veggies. The fillers in many commercial dog foods are nothing but empty calories. It is very common for large dogs and causes pain and impaired mobility. Physical therapy and pain medication can treat mild to moderate cases of hip dysplasia, while surgery may be needed for more severe cases. EPI is a chronic condition that requires lifelong treatment and dogs with EPI must be given enzyme supplements. With little planning ahead you could get reimbursed for every vet bill from now on! As always, you should meet the puppy before deciding whether to buy, and a reputable breeder will let you meet the parents and, potentially, any siblings. Familial traits can be passed from one dog to the next, although individual attributes are more important than breed attributes. Finding a Boxer Shepherd at a dog shelter might take some patience, but you can always ask for other mixed dog breeds that resemble the Boxer Shepherd. They were used as war dogs thanks to their power and bravery. Today, the most common breed of dog for use in explosives detection is the German Shepherd, which is also used as police dogs and service dogs, because they are known for being one of the easiest dogs to train. Boxers Are Great with Kids Boxers have a somewhat unfair reputation for being fighting dogs. They are lovers rather than fighters. Boxers are family orientated and they make especially good pets for children. They are patient and gentle with children, despite being headstrong and boisterous at other times. Boxer Shepherd Mixes tend to take on this attribute, so they are incredibly loving, but they do demand love in return. It was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club back in and even has its own motto — Utility and Intelligence. It was given the motto by breed champion Captain Max von Stephanitz. Stephanitz is widely credited with having introduced the modern German Shepherd breed and was responsible for setting the standards for the breed. Utility and intelligence are arguably the two words that best describe this heroic breed and the attributes that make it popular in a host of service roles. The German Shepherd is used as a guard dog, service dog, police dog, and in a range of other service roles. It is easy to train and can learn new commands quickly and easily. While the Boxer is said to share similar attributes, he can come across as being accident-prone and a bit dim. With constant training, the possibilities with this breed are almost endless. The German Shepherd can be shy and wary of strangers, which means that some Boxer Shepherds can adopt a similar outlook. Take them to puppy classes, enroll in a dog agility class, and take them down to the park where they can meet other puppies and their owners. Boxers can be a bit silly and your Boxer Shepherd Mix might have fits of boisterousness to contend with. While they will usually calm this activity around children, you might want to clear the decks for a five-minute charge. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They are easy to train, constantly willing to take on new information and commands, and they crave the love and attention of their owners. Although they have adopted some of the rambunctiousness of the Boxer breed, they usually reserve this for when small children are out of the way. The German Shepherd Boxer Mix will require regular walks, at least once a day, but their high level of intelligence means that they will learn games to play with family members of all ages. They can become very close friends with children, and through socialization at an early age, they should be welcoming of new additions to the family. You should monitor activity around your children because the size of this breed means that they still pose a danger even if they are being friendly. They will enjoy spending time at the park playing, and they can also thrive with another dog in the house. This breed can live with cats and other pets, although this is always easier if you can introduce them at a young age, and the size and liveliness of the Boxer Shepherd Mix means that it can be intimidating for smaller animals like cats. They are bright and attentive with a fun and silly side, that can keep all family members entertained for hours on end. Below are some things to consider when you are thinking of adding one to your family. They are likely to be voracious eaters, gobbling up food you put down. The primary food source for the German Shepherd Boxer Mix should be meat protein such as is found in chicken, lamb, or beef. You can also introduce fish oil to aid in keeping a healthy and shiny coat, while carbohydrates and fat give your dog the energy they need to get through the day. They are also strong and intelligent. This combination means that you will benefit by giving your dog regular exercise. You should walk your dog at least once a day, ideally giving him two or more walks. To keep your Boxer Shepherd Mix entertained and switched on, you can enroll in agility classes or take them hiking or climbing with you. Both breeds and the subsequent crossbreed will enjoy spending a lot of time outdoors. Unless they receive appropriate mental stimulation throughout the day, they are more prone to destructive and unwanted behavior. German Shepherds are renowned for their ability to learn. This is why they are chosen as service dogs, and why they can make exceptional pets. Even when you think your dog has learned everything it possibly can, a Boxer Shepherd Mix will surprise you by picking up new habits. Some have a long, German Shepherd style coat, but most tend to get the short coat of their Boxer ancestors. Those with short-haired Boxer Shepherds should only need to brush once a week, but if your cross has inherited the long-hair of the German Shepherd, you will need to groom two or three times a week , especially if your dog is active in fields or, worse still, ponds and lakes. Bathing may be necessary but should only be done when necessary. Brush teeth at least two or three times a week, ideally every day, and wipe their ears clean once a week to prevent ear infections. The F1 cross is considered the healthiest, as the parents have the least likelihood of contributing genes for common inheritable diseases. Low maintenance coat with wave and considered minimal to no shed. F1b is a Bernedoodle bred with a Poodle. F1b Mini Bernedoodles will have a higher success rate for no shed, and are recommended for families with moderate to severe allergies. F1b puppies are the most likely to be non-shedding and allergy-friendly. We microchip puppies prior to going home. Microchipping is a very easy, affordable process that a veterinarian can easily do. Males tend to be larger than females, but beyond that, there is not a major difference between the genders. The differences are quite subtle, and both males and females make amazing pets. We think temperament is more important than gender when matching dogs to owners. If your Bernedoodle is very active outdoors, you will likely find a shorter clip easier to maintain. But many owners enjoy the look of them in a fuller coat. A curly coat is less likely to shed but more likely to become matted if not brushed regularly. Daily brushing will be required, as well as professional grooming every weeks. So be specific and show the groomer photos of how you want your dog to look. Also Avoid bathing your Bernedoodle too often, as it strips essential oils from the coat. There is no such thing as a fully-hypoallergenic dog; Bernedoodles tend to be allergy-friendly. Most people with allergies to dog dander i. Every Bernedoodle has a different coat. The curlier the coat the less it will shed. Most Bernedoodles have the wavy type coat that is low- to non-shedding. If you are allergic to dog saliva you will most likely be allergic to Bernedoodles. You will know if you are allergic to saliva if your skin will break out in hives when a dog licks you. We always suggest that if allergies are involved, customers should meet some Bernedoodles if they can. This has happened very rarely. Yes, you can find a copy of our contract here. Bernedoodle Puppies Indiana: Conclusion Choosing a Responsible Bernedoodle Breeder These days Doodles are some of the most popular dogs around for very good reasons, we feel! Unfortunately, this is all too easy, given that breeders of these hybrid puppies are not yet subject to the same kind of standards as those of pedigree ones. The first thing you need to be on the lookout for is scammers. Not every person who says they have puppies is telling the truth. These kinds of fakers put adverts about the place using internet-sourced photos, claim deposits for the dogs left, right, and center, and then simply disappear without a trace taking all that lovely money with them. Here are a few further pointers to help you spot that you might be dealing with a scammer. On the other hand, some facilities may indeed have the puppies they are advertising, but they might not be quite as happy and healthy as advertised. Puppy mills otherwise known as puppy farms are kennels and breeding operations where profit is placed ahead of the animals. Parent pups are bred to within an inch of their lives, kept in appalling conditions, and not provided with the right food or any medical treatment. Any puppy you get here is likely to be in poor physical and mental health. Evidence of these on the website could indicate that you are dealing with a quality breeder who understands the many responsibilities involved with the ethical breeding of high-quality Doodles. Ensure Appropriate Health Checks Perhaps a more concrete way to guarantee that you are purchasing a healthy pup from a quality breeding line is to ask for evidence of genetic testing. The best breeders will do their utmost to ensure that the animals used in their program are free from the kinds of canine conditions that can easily pass on to their offspring. As usually bigger dogs, Bernies may be susceptible to joint issues, among other things. Better facilities will often display details of health checks on their websites. Look For a Health Guarantee Aside from evidence of genetic screening, a health guarantee is the holy grail for those looking to purchase a puppy. These basically give you all kinds of rights in terms of getting a new puppy or money back if any hereditary health issues arise. This makes them worth their weight in gold. Any breeder that offers a 2-year guarantee is making the ultimate statement about their trust in their parent pups and the offspring they have bred from them. If you can get this kind of guidance from a family member or friend, all the better. If not, look to trusted websites such as this one to provide information and some names to get going with. Just make sure to still keep an eye out for health screening and purchase guarantees. This will enable you to have absolute confidence in the facility you are dealing with. Read Online Reviews Another great source of information and recommendations is online reviews. With such a large community of Doodles lovers out there, social media can be an invaluable tool for potential pet parents. This goes not just for finding the right kind of breeder but also for tips on preparing your house for the arrival of your newest family member and more. Take care, though, to source reviews from independent websites. The more positive reviews a place has, the better. After all, it can be effortless to fake a few, but impossible to fake hundreds or more. For more ways to ensure you are dealing with the best quality puppy facility after all, a Bernedoodle is quite an investment! Long-haired German Shepherds are technically called a long coat German Shepherd, while a short-haired German Shepherd is called a normal coat or stock coat German Shepherd. Dogs with either coat have the same physiological structure and both have double coats: an undercoat and a top coat. The only difference between the two is the top coat. The long haired German Shepherd will have a heavier top coat than the undercoat. The double coat of a German Shepherd is an important feature of the breed. The double coat weathers and insulates the dogs—it protects them from the cold in the winter and the heat in the summer. The length of the coat of a German Shepherd has no impact on its ability as a working dog. What does a long haired German Shepherd look like? The skeleton and structure of a long-haired German Shepherd will be the same as a short-haired German Shepherd. Both dogs will have an undercoat, but the difference is that the top coat of a long-haired German Shepherd will be longer. The long coat GSD has longer and silkier hair on the chest, back, face, tail, and on the backside of its legs. Short on the head, including the inside of the ears, on the front side of the legs, on the paws and toes, somewhat longer and more strongly covered in hair on the neck, almost forming a mane. On the back side of the legs the hair extends to the carpal joint or the hock and forms clear trousers on the back side of the haunches. Historically, German Shepherds originated in Germany and were native sheepdogs. He firmly believed that the standard of the German Shepherd breed should not include dogs with long hair. Throughout the s, long haired German Shepherds were considered unsuitable and unacceptable for breeding. It is important to note that long-haired German Shepherds are the result of natural genetic diversity and not a separate breed. Their long coats are an inherited trait that can occur when both parents carry the recessive long-hair gene. This gene manifests as a more luxurious and abundant coat, offering a striking contrast to the traditional short-haired German Shepherd appearance. The breeding of long-haired German Shepherds follows the same rigorous standards and principles as their short-haired counterparts. The focus remains on maintaining the breed's exceptional temperament, working abilities, and overall health. Over time, breeders recognized the value of long-haired German Shepherds and began selectively breeding them to maintain and enhance their unique characteristics. Through careful pairings and strategic breeding programs, the long-haired variety established itself as a distinct and cherished branch of the German Shepherd breed. How big do long-haired German Shepherds get? Long-haired German Shepherds are structurally the same as short-haired German Shepherds, therefore they can both grow to similar sizes. Males: inches tall, pounds Females: inches tall, pounds Since both German Shepherds are physiologically the same, they also have the same temperaments: loyal, intelligent, energetic, courageous and protective. German Shepherds are ranked 2 on the AKC Breed Popularity list and make for wonderful family companions and working dogs. How can I identify a long-haired German Shepherd puppy? In the photo below are two litter mates from a recent Nadelhaus litter. The puppy on the left is a long coat and the puppy on the right is a normal coat. The long coat has wispier hair on the chest, back, face, tail, and on the backside of its legs. Long-hair female German Shepherd next to short-hair male German Shepherd. Genetically in German Shepherds, the short hair gene is dominant and the long hair gene is recessive. This means if two short-haired German Shepherds are mated, but neither carries the recessive long hair gene, then no long haired puppies can be produced. However, if two short-haired German Shepherds are mated and both carry the recessive gene, then long-haired German Shepherd puppies can be produced. Long-haired German Shepherds are considered a less common variant of the breed, adding to their allure and exclusivity. While short-haired German Shepherds dominate the breed standard, enthusiasts of long-haired Shepherds appreciate their unique beauty and elegant appearance. Due to their rarity, finding a reputable breeder or rescue organization specializing in long-haired German Shepherds may require some research and patience. However, the joy of owning one of these beautiful dogs is well worth the effort for those who appreciate their longer coats and exceptional qualities. Do long-haired German Shepherds shed more than short-haired German Shepherds? No, this is a common misconception. Although they shed less than short haired German Shepherds, their coats still require regular maintenance. They will need regular brushing and grooming, especially if you enjoy hiking or outdoor activities with your GSD. While it is a rare occurrence for a long-haired GSD to not have an undercoat, most of them do have undercoats. And just like short-haired GSDs, their undercoats will shed more or less throughout the year depending on the season. Should I trim my long haired German Shepherd's coat? The decision to trim a long haired German Shepherd comes down to personal preference, but it is not a necessity. Trimming can help make for more manageable living around the house. If you choose to trim, you can trim around the backs of the ears, on the back of the legs both front and back and then thin the bushy tail. Shaving a German Shepherd on the other hand is never recommended. Their double coats help keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. What are long haired German Shepherds called? Regular brushing: Long-haired German Shepherds require regular brushing to prevent matting and tangles. Aim for at least a few brushing sessions per week to keep their coat in good condition. Finish your brushing session with a gentle dog brush to clean up loose hairs. Bathing and drying: It's important to bathe your long-haired German Shepherd as needed, using a dog-specific shampoo. Be sure to thoroughly rinse out all the shampoo to prevent any residue. After bathing, use a high-velocity dryer or a cool air dryer to dry their coat thoroughly, as moisture trapped in the fur can lead to skin issues. Professional grooming: Consider taking your long-haired German Shepherd to a professional groomer for occasional trimming and coat maintenance. A groomer can help keep the fur around sensitive areas, such as the paws and ears, tidy and reduce the chances of matting. Watch for seasonal shedding: Like all German Shepherds, long-haired ones will undergo shedding seasons. Be prepared for increased shedding during these times and brush your dog more frequently to remove loose hair. A de-shedding tool can be helpful in managing shedding and keeping their coat healthy. Remember, each dog is unique, and the specific care requirements may vary. Does Nadelhaus sell long haired German Shepherd puppies? Long Haired German Shepherd Adults For most people it's probably fairly easy to determine what a long coat German Shepherd is - it simply refers to the length of their fur. Whilst a "standard" German Shepherd will traditionally have short fur, long coats are the result of a recessive gene that any dog can carry. It doesn't mean long coats have any problems - far from it, and for many people they are an even more desirable dog than the standard breed German Shepherd. Long haired German Shepherds look incredibly handsome, and if you're happy with the additional effort required in grooming them and keeping their hair in good condition then they're as loyal and obedient as any other German Shepherd. With our private courier service, we can safely deliver your puppy to all fifty states with utmost love and care. More information here on the long-coat puppies we currently have available for sale. What is their Temperament Like? There is no discernible difference between the temperament of a long coat German Shepherd and a normal short coat dog. For a long time they've been unfairly labeled as being difficult, but sadly this really stems from them not being accepted due to falling outside the normal breeding standard. The Long haired German Shepherds we've raised here at our top breeding facility in Illinois. Our specialized trained dogs have gone on to be used as search dogs, rescue dogs, police dogs, service dogs and therapy dogs. There's no reason long coats can't perform as well or better than short coats since they do look quite incredible at the same time! Whilst a long coat can be a far more desirable dog for some people, when it comes to price they can actually work out around the same price, or even cheaper, than a standard or "normal coat" German Shepherd. The dogs we breed and train here at Regis Regal come from some of the best bloodlines in the world. Let me present to you how I think puppy chow should always look: Beautiful, chunky clusters. The puppy chow I grew up with was more like individual pieces of cereal that were completely coated with powdered sugar. It was served room temperature and you ate it one piece at a time. This stays true to the basics but just dials up everything good: the chocolate, the peanut butter, the butter. It gives just a little more excitement with the texture, the shape, the temperature. It makes for supremely satisfying grazing. It is one of the great Midwestern food contributions of the 80s and 90s my roots! Microwave works fine. This is the Midwest. We are not fancy. Melted chocolate goes in with the cereal. Toss with Powdered Sugar Once the cereal is coated, toss it with powdered sugar so each piece is coated and dry enough to touch. Midwestern kids of the 90s hello will agree with me that mixing the chocolate coated cereal in a paper grocery bag is the authentic and proper technique. I mean, is it really puppy chow without the paper bag? But in reality, any big bag ziplock, paper bag, even a big mixing bowl that you can toss very gently so as not to break the cereal will get the job done. I keep it in airtight containers like a lidded plastic food storage container, for example or just in a Ziplock bag. Yes, the fridge works, the counter will even work. Plus, it travels well and makes it last longer. I hope this helps you live a little more lightly in August. How long does this last? In the freezer, this can last for a few months. With this work with other nut butters? This also works well with Sun Butter. Is the paper bag necessary? Nutrition information With only six ingredients, puppy chow muddy buddies is extremely quick and easy to whip up, making it the perfect recipe for the busy holiday season. Puppy chow ingredients This sweet snack mix is made of six super simple ingredients! The best part? You probably have all of the ingredients on hand already. All of the ingredients are staple pantry and fridge items that all have a long shelf life. Rice chex cereal makes the base of this recipe and makes this snack mix super crunchy and addicting. Semi-sweet chocolate chips. Peanut butter gets melted together with the chocolate chips and creates an amazingly creamy mixture that coats the cereal. Use smooth peanut butter — instead of chunky — to ensure even melting. Unsalted butter. Vanilla extract. Powdered sugar. Set aside. Place chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter into a large microwave safe bowl or measuring cup. Melt until smooth, then stir in vanilla extract. Pour chocolate mixture over the cereal and gently stir together. Stir in the powdered sugar. Tips for making puppy chow muddy buddies There are SO many recipes for puppy chow, but I promise you, my recipe is the best, because of these tips and tricks. Use the whole box of cereal. Most recipes call for 9 cups of cereal, leaving 2 cups left in the box. What the heck are you supposed to do with 2 cups of chex?! Use the whole bag of chocolate chips. More is more in this recipe. Just throw the whole bag in. Use more powdered sugar than you think necessary. Chunks are the best part. Just trust me on this one. How to store puppy chow Puppy chow can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container for up to a week. It does not need to be refrigerated, but some people prefer it chilled. Puppy chow recipe substitutions If you can, I highly recommend making the recipe as is. It truly is the perfect combination of crunchy, sweet, chocolate-y, peanut buttery goodness. Do I have to use semi-sweet chocolate? You can use dark chocolate or even milk chocolate, but semi-sweet is really gives you that perfect sweet, but not too sweet balance. Processed peanut butter — think Jiff or Skippy — works best, but sunflower seed butter should work as well. Butter is essential, but try using a vegan buttery spread instead. Do I need to use vanilla extract? No, you can omit it, but you will loose some of that cozy depth of flavor. I grew up calling it puppy chow but plenty of people call it muddy buddies. It depends on where you live. Other names:. Jump to Video Jump to Recipe This post may contain affiliate links. Please read our disclosure policy. Snack mixes are one of the best party foods. How to Make Puppy Chow You can break the process down into three easy steps. Measure your cereal into a large bowl and set aside. In 1 quart sauce pan, heat semisweet chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter over low heat stirring frequently with a spatula until melted. Remove from heat and stir in a teaspoon vanilla. Pour chocolate mixture over cereal, stirring until evenly coated. Pour into two gallon resealable plastic bags. Add powdered sugar. Seal bag and shake until well coated. Spread over waxed or parchment paper to cool. You want each piece of chex to have an ample amount of chocolaty peanut butter sauce for the sugar to stick to. If you like your mix extra saucy try reducing the Chex amount to only cups. You can also customize it to whatever holiday candy is being sold at the time. This can also be made dairy free by using the right chocolate and a butter substitute like margarine. Sunbutter, soybutter, almond butter, and cashew Butter are great substitutes for peanut butter in this recipe. You can even use Nutella instead for extra chocolatey Puppy Chow. It can stay at room temperature for up to 10 days, or kept in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. However, at my house it never lasts that long! Allow it to thaw before eating. This will allow it to set and dry. These are great for parties, get-togethers, and more! This is also the best Muddy Buddy recipe you will ever have. Muddy Buddies or Puppy Chow is seriously one of the best treats ever! This recipe is so great because it uses an entire box of Chex mix! No need to measure. And no worries about sharing because there is plenty for everyone! Muddy Buddies are so good because they are chocolatey, peanut buttery, crunchy, tasty, and oh so delicious! Muddy Buddy Ingredients: The ingredients are simple but together they create magic! Semisweet Chocolate Chips- Semisweet is just the best! Not too sweet, not too bitter. Salt- This recipe is plenty sweet so adding just a pinch of salt really helps contrast the sweetness. Vanilla Extract- Vanilla makes everything better! It adds such a delicious taste. It gives Muddy Buddies a snowy look and delicious sweet taste. You can also vary the amount of powdered sugar that is added, depending on your preference. A lot of Muddy Buddy recipes I see are pure white from powdered sugar overload. Pure heaven! But you can store Muddy Buddies in an airtight container… -at room temperature for about 4 days. I know a lot of people who love to freeze Muddy Buddies and eat it straight from the freezer! It just depends on the texture you prefer.

A litter is coming soon! Join our Big Dog Family!! I continued Training dogs because dogs are my passion. After moving back to NJ, I decided to add to our family and buy a female Boxer. However, I made the mistake of taking 2 children to pick up 1 puppy. Not much long after, as fate would have it, I met another boxer lover named Jen. She had 6yr old boxer named Ginger who has the most amazing temperament! It inspired me to breed boxers again. With the amazing well tempered beautiful litter he sired, we used him again this Spring and had two beautiful litters. And most satisfying is that all will be going to amazing homes! I own the Dam and her sister, who both are amazing. She is a brindle with black mask. The Sire is a big fawn colored black mask gentle giant. We have a 6 ur old female from the same bloodline who too has an amazing temperament! About Boxers The Boxer is a medium to large, short-haired breed of dog, developed in Germany. The coat is smooth and tight-fitting; colors are fawn, brindled, or white, with or without white markings. Testimonials from our Boxer Family From Luna's family: My family and I want to thank you for letting us be part of your boxer family. Our boxer puppy is from the last litter. She is a brindle and we named her Luna. When you first speak to John he puts you at ease and has professionalism, respect and knowledge. He includes you every step of the way and constantly posts pictures and updates about the litter. He also encourages at least 2 visits with your puppy and provides a free course on raising a boxer puppy. On pick up day he provides all paper work. .I have recommended John to several people. Our little luna is amazing She is a cuddle bug and is extremely gentle with my kids. She is playful and protective. She is a blessing and a great addition to our family. Thank you again John. Be well. From Butch's family: From the minute I contacted John on the website it was a very professional and enjoyable experience. Having the families all get together on the same day to meet their new puppies was a great experience. Pickup day was also well organized and I also enjoyed seeing all the puppies from the last litter at 6 months of age. This was our 5th boxer but by far the most enjoyable experience in getting a new puppy. We were searching for a reputable Boxer breeder and were very happy that we found John. He was very friendly and professional. He kept us updated on the different stages of Taco's wellbeing. The chance to meet our pup Taco and provide an article of our choosing to help acclimate Taco to his new family was very considerate. I would recommend him to anyone looking for a Boxer. Taco has become an integral part of our lives and we thank John for Taco. He is very friendly and answers questions - no matter how many you have! I was even able to come and meet the mother to see her personality and to meet John in person, which was a huge factor in making my decision to go with Big Dog Boxers. John cares about the dogs that come from his litter. He stays in touch and loves seeing pictures of how the dogs are progressing. You can see he truly cares about all the dogs. He has the best temperament and is very handsome. I am always getting stopped by people when I walk him he loves walks because of how beautiful his brindle coating is. Odin loves to cuddle and to play ball.Although I do not have children, Odin is exposed to my nieces and the children on my block - they all love him and he loves them - they all get excited to see each other! When the time comes for me to get a second boxer, I will only go to Big Dog Boxers. From Samson's family: Having only experience with smaller breeds, we felt a little out of our depth when we decided to bring a boxer into our family. John paired us with the perfect puppy. John was terrific with providing information about the breed and answering all of our questions, so we felt much more confident when it was time to bring Samson home. From Hamilton's family From start to finish John was very communicative and responsive to all our questions and was always keeping us updated. John clearly cares about the litter and their health. We love our not so small baby boy that we got and couldn't be happier with our experience. From Daisy's Family John was great to work with right from the beginning. Answered all my questions and made sure I had all the information I needed. Daisy is a great pup and we love her so much. She has a wonderful temperament and has been easy to train. Our puppy Jasper has turned out to be oe of the finest Boxers we have owned! He is our 7th. His temperament is very sweet and funny. We had just lost our beloved Boxer 2 months prior and as fate would have it, Arnold became available. Within days we were able to meet Arnold and it was love at first site. John would send us updates as Arnold grew. John is very transparent and the puppies were loved and cared for as if he was keeping them all. Such a pleasure to work with. Please go on to Instagram and TikTok bigdogboxers to like! A young Ginger Nothing much has changed. She still runs around like a puppy! Sampson to Vet. If you and your Boxer dog have been stuck in the house more than you'd like over a cold, snowy winter you're probably both itching to be spending more time outside. Most likely your Boxer will be more active in warm weather. Do you need to prepare your dog? Wondering if there's any summer safety tip for Boxer dogs? There definitely is. Primarily, there are 2 areas of concern: The heat and the elements that warm weather brings. While we will touch on how the heat and sun can directly affect your Boxer dog, other factors to consider are how the warm weather causes other things to be in the environment. This ranges from insects to parasites to the element of standing water. So, let's gear up for summer to make sure our Boxers are super safe, super happy, and can enjoy the warmer season without having any issues. Summer Care Tip 1 - Be Aware of Your Boxer's Water Intake Due to an increase in activity and a slight decrease in food, coupled with rising temperatures, your Boxer is going to need more water in the summer than during the cooler and colder months. In regard to the increased activity, this is not just one burst of running or an extra 10 minutes added to a walk. Even if a Boxer is not being given purposeful exercise in hot weather, just due to the nicer temps, there is typically more movement. For most owners, this will not be exceedingly noticeable; most Boxers will not flat-out refuse to eat, it is more of a slight decrease spread out over the course of the entire day. This does however add up and since all food even dry kibble holds some water, this means he will need to drink that water instead of eating it. The third factor is of course rising temperatures. As you probably know, canines sweat from the paws pads; but they also pant when it's hotter out. When panting, this not only allows moisture on the tongue to evaporate, heavy breathing draws moisture from the lining of the lungs and that moisture evaporates as well. And it needs to be replaced. How much water a Boxer dog needs will be based on the weight of your dog. Summer time: up to 1. Summer time: 3. Summer time max high end: 5. Summer time max high end: 7. Summer time max high end 8. Summer time max high end: .Severe signs of dehydration are quite obvious: The gums become dry and sticky, saliva becomes thick, eyes are super sunken and there is severe weakness. Just a small 1. Fast water consumption is a trigger for killer bloat. To increase safe, all-day water consumption in the summer you can: 1 Offer filtered water. This should be done year-round, but we want to take this time to note that unfiltered tap water is horrible for both human and canine consumption. In the US, it can LEGALLY contain cancer causing agents and other contaminants that can cause all sorts of health issues including skin lesions, intestinal polyps, allergic dermatitis, stomach distress and much more. Just the legal limits of copper are proven to cause liver and kidney damage long-term. How can this be? Because the laws say it is safe in small amounts and many people drink a lot of other things beside the water from their kitchen tap if they dare do so at all. But your Boxer dog's only liquid to drink is water. And he'll be drinking even more in the summer. So, please connect a quality filter to your kitchen sink or use an effective water pitcher. Bring some when you're out driving around and give him some when you park the car. Visiting friends with your Boxer? Bring his water. Make a bunch of flavored ice cube treats. You can use low-salt chicken or beef broth or juice; try apple, cranberry or orange make sure to get real juice and not the fake flavored kind. Here are some great products that will all work together to help: 1 A canine cooling mat - These are awesome. A cooling mat or gel pad sized for your Boxer offers a super 'chill' experience where your Boxer can just plop down and instantly feel good on a hot day. A quality one will stay cool for hours by drawing excess heat out of a dog's body, and many puppies and dogs find that 'ahhhh' relief that so many need in the summer time. These are particularly useful for Boxer puppies that aren't quite big enough to stick their heads halfway out the window and end up being bombarded with glaring rays when buckled into their car seat. Don't get an inflatable one. Just a 'cheap' poly plastic pools you know, the ones you can just grab at Walmart will do just fine. Fill it up, throw in a few toys and many puppies and dogs are happy as clams. Puppies, especially if they are with other dogs, will jump and play around and it's super fun to watch. Many older Boxers will flop down, happy to just sit in it… and it's common for an older dog to soak himself, get out, wait a bit and then repeat. The canine equivalent of a hammock of sorts, this type of dog bed keeps a Boxer up high with good air flow under him. Most dogs love this since they can lie down but still be a bit higher to see all the action. If you don't see the images, try a refresh. And on mobile, you may need to turn your screen horizontal to see all 4. After all, it's out there to get all the beating of the sun's ray with no protection… no extra fur to hang down and offer a bit of shading, nothing. And dogs can get sunburn on the nose even if the sun is behind clouds. Clouds block light, but only reduce - not block - UV rays. And oddly, some newer studies show that certain cloud patterns can enhance UV rays that reach the Earth. Crazy but true. Without nose protection, Boxers can get a slightly sunburned nose that will then be over-dry and prone to peeling with continued exposure to the sun throughout the summer. The Fix - No need to do anything if it's a day that you'll be off at work and your Boxer will be inside. But on weekends and any days that you'll be in and out of the house with your dog, use a quality nose balm. That's it. Just dab a good nose butter or balm on the nose. If you know you'll be out with your Boxer for more than 30 minutes on a warm to hot sunny day, apply this 20 minutes before heading out. Since these come in either small tubes similar to a Chapstick or in a small round tin, it's easy to bring along with you; so if you'll be out with your Boxer for several hours or most of the day, bring it along with you and reapply every 2 hours. Our recommended nose balm see below is also great for fixing an already dry or cracked nose. Paws - Don't make the mistake of thinking your dog's paws are invincible. Any surface other than grass can burn your Boxer's paws. Or these can be injury to the skin layers. Many owners don't head out to walk their dog while barefoot and just don't realize how hot the ground surfaces can be. Cement, asphalt, sand… it can all heat up quick and radiate heat out. Studies have been done on this you didn't think we wouldn't back this up, right? The most common walking surfaces sidewalks and neighborhood pavements are made of an asphalt and concrete mixture. This has been shown to heat up to as much as degrees Fahrenheit hotter than the air temperature. This does depend on how long the sun has been beating down on it and if there is any shade, etc. The time of day matters as well, since it has been shown to be hottest at noon. Stella, 5 years old Photo courtesy of Mr. How hot is this? An egg can fry in 5 minutes at degrees 55 C. At F .So, while you don't want to baby your Boxer and walking on different surfaces is actually GREAT sand, rock, gravel, cement, etc. The fix:1 Test the pavement before heading out. Since you can't really stick a thermometer in the road, carefully press your hand onto the surface for a count of 8 if possible without injury. If it feels too hot to you, it's too hot for your Boxer dog without protection. And be careful when you do this, because it may be so hot that if you don't pull your hand away, you can get a burn within literally one second. This doesn't mean you can't walk your Boxer on a hot day or if the sidewalks are hot, it just means you have to protect the paws. The other option is dog shoes, but 1, many dogs don't do well with these especially if they aren't used to wearing them and 2, many owners balk at the idea…'He's a Boxer, he doesn't need shoes! Just be sure to use a good one that gives a semi-permeable shield that is absorbed into the paws, allowing perspiration to escape through the toes. As a side note, this is also really good for winter care to protect against ice melt chemical and other wintertime elements. A good product will only need to be applied about 2 or 3 times a week and absorb quickly so that it's easy to use. You just smear it on and when you see that's into not all slippery on your hands, that means it's well coated on the your Boxer's paws. Your Boxer's body- Different breeds are more or less prone to sunburn. The Boxer is among the top 6 breeds more prone to sunburn and resulting skin cancer that can develop from years of exposure. White Boxers or those with flash will sunburn quicker; but even dark Boxers should be protected. On the main body, you might not even realize there's an issue of over-exposure or a burn since this is happening under the fur. But, there'll be discomfort and then itching and, possible poor coat health. The stomach is a vulnerable area, dogs don't need to lie up facing the sun to get a burn here. Sun can reflect up from ground surfaces and from water. Again, to help prevent sun burns and possible sun cancer, protection is key. The Fix - There's two great methods to protect your Boxer's skin: Leave-in coat spray with sunscreen. This is good for fawn or brindle Boxers and is an effective method for normal duration spent outside. Canine sun block. This is the best choice for white Boxers or those that are very flashing. And this is what you'll want to use if your Boxer will be spending a good portion of a summer day outside. This can go both on the coat and on the belly skin. Below are our top recommendations for summer sun protection:. Nose balm, paw wax, a leave-in coat spray, and the only FDA compliant sunscreen for pets it's the equivalent of 30 to 40 SPF. Other Summer Care Tips for Boxers While we covered the most important care tips, there are a few more to go over. Some of these are just common sense, but it the spirit of always giving you the best info possible, we're going to list them. While some may seem to be a 'given', there are some added details here that we think you should consider. Don't leave your Boxer in the car. It doesn't matter if it's 'just for a minute' or if the windows are down. Just don't do it. Don't let your Boxer near the barbecue or outside campfires. Again, common sense. But it should be noted that some dogs are tempted by sticks that may be lobbed into outdoor fire pits…and while you'd think that they would fear the fire, the temptation of chasing after a stick that was thrown can trigger an automated response. So, while your intention may be to stoke the flames, a dog may not know that and end up with serious injury. Don't leave your Boxer dog outside alone in the heat for a long time. Again, this is a given. But one thing to keep in mind is that an owner's intention may be to let a Boxer run around a bit in an enclosed yard for say 20 or 30 minutes… But what if an emergency comes up… or some other issue prevents you from letting him in on time. The sun moves higher in the sky, the temps rise, he's without water… yeah, this could turn bad. Keep up on flea and tick prevention. Pesky ticks and fleas are at their peak during the summer months in many areas. If you don't feel completely at ease with what your using on your Boxer, reassess and choose a product you feel comfortable with see next point below for recommendations. Use a safe mosquito repellent on your Boxer dog so he doesn't get swarmed and bit. Look for a natural, safe product with lavender, cedarwood, and rosewood. Recommended insect repellent: First, check the heartworm prevention that you're giving to your Boxer; most also repel fleas. But, then there's still ticks and mosquitoes to worry about. Since many products have high chemical counts, you may want to consider using a no-chemical, all-natural repellent. It's a balm that you massage between your palms for it to melt, then you apply it to your Boxer's neck and upper back. Normally, it needs to be reapplied every 2 weeks or so. If your Boxer has been in salt water or a pool with chloride, be sure to rinse the coat off well. If not, there can be skin and coat drying issues to contend with. Boxers can be pretty good swimmers, but they can tire out quickly too. A dog can find himself out too far without enough steam to get back. If out boating or in deep water, be smart and place a quality life vest on your Boxer. This way he can have tons of fun cooling off and you don't have to worry about issues. Oliver, 14 months old Photo courtesy of The Wood Family 8. Dogs get stung by bees, wasps, hornets, and yellow jackets as much as humans do. While the fur offers some protection, it's not uncommon for these insects to sting a dog on his underbelly, paws, or even his face. There's a few things to know… 1 A hive can be anywhere… the cracks in a home's outside exterior, that bush right near where your dog goes to the bathroom, underneath storage sheds… really anywhere and it can be on or close to the house. Heather Connally, a board-certified vet in emergency and critical care and co-owner of the Veterinary Specialty Center of Tucson, a dog's bark can set off a hive. Most humans and dogs can outrun bees even Africanized bees if they are able to run i. So, you'll if your Boxer dog is getting swarmed, grab his leash and run with him…. A dog may need antihistamines, steroids or even epinephrine if he's having a really bad reaction. So, if your Boxer gets stung multiple times, keep a super close eye on him and better is to just be proactive and bring him to the vet. Don't try to pull it out with a tweezers, because that can release venom into the bloodstream. Summary When we started writing this for you, we thought it'd be a quick summer care reference with info most owners know but just needed a little reminder. small labrador puppy - For the complete list please see our German Shepherd Breeders page. The average price for a German Shepherd Puppy in Oregon will vary depending on the breeder that you choose. It is important to do your research before purchasing a puppy and to find a reputable breeder who is registered with the American Kennel Club. Prices may vary because of the pedigree of the dog, whether it is purebred or not and what training the puppy may have already undergone. The most important thing to remember is that you get what you pay for. It is not recommended that you purchase an animal on the cheap when it comes to matters of health and well-being. There are many breeders who are registered with the American Kennel Club and who adhere to the strict guidelines that have been put in place. When looking for a breeder, it is important to ask questions about the health of the parents and grandparents of the puppies. Breeders should be able to provide documentation that proves that their dogs have been tested for genetic diseases and are clear of any issues. The breeder should also be willing to provide a guarantee of the health of the puppy. If you are looking for a show-quality dog, then you will likely have to pay more for your puppy. However, all German Shepherds are beautiful animals and there is no need to break the bank in order to bring one into your home. When you find a responsible breeder, it is important to stick with them so that you can continue to get quality dogs from them in the future. This will allow you to see where the puppies are being raised and how they are being treated. It will also give you the opportunity to meet the parents of the puppies and ask any questions that you may have. A responsible breeder will want to meet you as well and will likely ask some questions about your lifestyle and what you are looking for in a dog. They should also be willing to provide references so that you can speak with other people who have purchased puppies from them in the past. If everything looks good and you decide to purchase a German Shepherd puppy from this breeder, be sure to get a written contract that outlines all of the details of the sale. This should include information about the health of the puppy, his pedigree and what type of training he has received. The breeder should also provide you with a list of supplies that you will need to get started, such as a food dish, water bowl, collar, leash, crate and toys. Purchasing a German Shepherd puppy is a big decision and one that should not be taken lightly. By doing your research and finding a responsible breeder, you can be sure that you are getting a healthy, well-behaved animal who will be a cherished member of your family for years to come. A breeder who has been breeding dogs for years should be able to provide you with references from other people that they have sold puppies to in the past. These individuals will have valuable information on the level of care and expertise offered by this breeder. If there is a particular reason why these former clients did not keep their German Shepherds, then it may be a good idea to steer clear of this breeder. Although it is impossible to find a perfect breeder, someone who has a long history of good reviews should be your ideal choice. When looking for a responsible German Shepherd breeder in Oregon, it is important to ask questions and do your research. By following these simple tips, you can be sure that you are getting a healthy, well-behaved puppy who will be a cherished member of your family for years to come. Sometimes this is done to make a quick buck. Other times it is because they simply do not know the proper way to care for their animals. If they are rushing through the process with little concern about who you are or what kind of life that their pups will have, then it might be time to find another breeder. This organization provides a list of breeders who have met certain standards of care and breeding. If the breeder you are speaking with does not have papers for their animals, then they are likely not a reputable source. Ask The Oregon Breeder if Your German Shepherd Puppy Has Any Health Problems When you go to pick up your new puppy from a responsible breeder in Oregon, they should be able to provide you with a health certificate that shows that the puppy is free of any serious medical problems. This certificate will also list all of the vaccines and preventative measures that have been taken for this animal. This should be a place where the pup can run and play without fear of getting hit by a car or becoming lost. Introduce The Puppy To All Of The Family Members: Once your new pup has had a chance to relax and play in their safe area, it is time to introduce them to the rest of your family. Be sure to have plenty of treats on hand to reward the pup for good behavior. It may take a little bit of time for the puppy to get used to everyone, but with patience and love, they will soon become part of the family. Install A Dog Door: If you want your German Shepherd puppy to be able to go in and out of the house as they please, then you will need to install a dog door. This can be a great way for the pup to get some exercise during the day when you are not at home. Bringing a new puppy into your home is always a joyous occasion. By following the tips above, you can make sure that your new German Shepherd has a safe and happy home to call their own. Potty Training Your New German Shepherd Puppy Potty training is one of the most important skills that any new puppy will need to learn. When you bring your German Shepherd home, there are certain steps you can take to make sure they pick up this behavior quickly and easily. Many owners make the mistake of introducing their dog to a potty spot in the yard and expecting them to know what to do from there. This strategy rarely works and can lead to accidents all over your house before you even knew what happened. If your new pup does not feel like it is necessary for them to go outside at certain times, they will wait until the last minute and often make a mess inside of your home. To get around this problem, it is important to keep your puppy on a strict schedule where they are expected to go outside every couple of hours or so. You can either use an app on your phone to set up reminders or you can mark off each hour as it passes with different items such as toys. This could be anything from a small treat to verbal praise or petting. If the puppy makes a mistake and goes potty inside, do not scold them. Simply clean it up and take them outside immediately so they can understand that this is not the behavior that you are looking for. Bringing a new German Shepherd puppy into your home is an exciting experience that will bring plenty of joy to your family. By following the tips above, you can make sure that your new pup has a safe and easy time getting potty trained. Congratulations on your newest addition! Hood River, OR, .Any puppies that qualify as a German Shepherd Mix are a cross between a German Shepherd and another dog breed. In a mixed breed, you can get any mix of characteristics in the parent breeds. German Shepherds tend to be strong-willed, intelligent, playful, and loyal. To get a full idea of what to expect in your puppy, be sure to ask the breeder about the other dog breed in the cross and check out the mother dog in-person to get a general idea about size and temperament. On the German Shepherd side, you have an independent dog with high intelligence and a playful spirit. German Shepherds make great family pets and are born protectors. Because of their protective instinct, they can be suspicious of strangers. Socialization early and often can help curb this suspicion and make them more open to new people and situations. German Shepherds also tend to be loving and have a lively personality. The German Shepherd Mix can have any or all of these characteristics plus any characteristics from the other parent breed in the mix. Before buying a German Shepherd Mix puppy and bringing them home, be sure to talk to the breeder about the other parent breed. If the puppies are being family-raised around children, you should be able to get an idea of how they will do in a family setting that includes children. The German Shepherd is a moderately adaptable working dog that was bred to guard, work, and herd. They do not tend to do well in apartments and are best-suited for houses with yards. GSDs prefer to be with their families and do not like to be alone. They also tend to prefer cooler climates as they are sensitive to heat. With a German Shepherd Mix, you could get a moderately adaptable dog that is just like a purebred German Shepherd. You could also end up with a dog that is more like the other parent breed. Talking with the breeder about the other parent breed can give you a good idea of what to expect. German Shepherds can be prone to elbow and hip dysplasia. You will need to ask the breeder about the other parent breed in the cross to get an idea of any other health concerns to be aware of in your German Shepherd Mix. Health screenings, clearances, and the genetic history of the parents can help allay concerns about potential health conditions. On the German Shepherd side, training and obedience classes are highly recommended for novice dog owners. Although GSDs are highly intelligent, pick up on things quickly, and train fairly easily, they can be stubborn with an independent streak. Regardless of the other parent breed in the cross, you should be prepared to enroll in obedience and training classes with your German Shepherd Mix. The experience will be beneficial to both you and your puppy and will also offer some opportunities for socialization. You will still want to ask the breeder about the other parent breed in the cross to get an understanding of what to expect during the training process. Professional grooming a few times a year and the occasional bath is also recommended. Regardless of the coat type, your German Shepherd Mix will need to have their nails trimmed monthly and their teeth brushed regularly. Not every dog will allow you to do this, so try to get a tooth brushing session in at least a few times a week to reduce tartar buildup. This will help prevent dental problems like tooth decay and gum disease. Plus, it will help cut down on bad breath! German Shepherds tend to have a high activity level. They were bred to run, herd, guard, and protect, so they are used to working and having a job to do. They are definitely not a lazy dog breed! Be sure to talk to the breeder about the other parent breed in the mix. You will still want to go in prepared for a high energy dog with the understanding that your German Shepherd Mix puppy may have an activity level closer to the other breed in the cross. If both are high energy dogs breeds, expect to end up with a high energy dog. A German Shepherd is a large dog breed that generally weighs between 55 and 90 pounds. They also usually stand between 22 and 26 inches tall at the shoulders. The other dog breed in the cross could result in a smaller or larger German Shepherd Mix. My fosters gave me the last nickname because they say I will make someone a great Pal. You see, I was found on the side of the road barely alive after being hit by a car. I couldn't walk very well because my pelvis was broken in three places. But after visiting this place called the veterinarian, I started feeling much better. Unfortunately before my accident I had never met kind humans and still to this day, I'm very easily startled and scared of new people. It's going to take someone very special and patient to earn my trust. But once you earn it, I'm the sweetest and most gentle dog ever. I love love love chest rubs and ear scratches. But my number one love of all time is treats!!! I love all flavors so if you decide to take me home, don't be shy when shopping for me! I enjoy sunbathing and relaxing in my kennel. It's my safe place when I feel overwhelmed. I promise to love you if you promise to take the time to get to know me. I will do best in a quiet house with maybe 1 or 2 adults and an older mature doggy friend. I don't care much for traveling and prefer to be a homebody. I do love to play with doggy friends and don't mind cats either. I'm currently working on becoming more confident in public spaces. What do you say? Can you give me a shot? Ralf is kennel trained and potty trained. He is a local adoption only. His current foster is a trainer who is willing to offer two free sessions along with his adoption to set you both up for success and better help you understand what he will need and how you can help provide that for him. He is a Shepherd mix that weighs roughly 50lbs.
