We appreciate your time and hope we can answer any questions you have about our English golden retriever puppies. We have a 14 acre farm located just outside of Culpeper, Virginia. Our golden retrievers are all in the house with us, although there is a dog room. This room provides the golden retrievers a safe space where they can't get into trouble if they are without supervision. A group of dogs tend to pack together and follow a leader, even in behavior they wouldn't do on their own so it's important to keep them safe when alone. As a breeder, I spend much of my day in the dog room working. More time if there is a litter of puppies for sale! I put my goldens out every hour or so and let them stay out until they ask to come in, usually 15 or 20 minutes. We both get a lot of exercise with this schedule. As the days grow longer, they enjoy staying out longer. Winter was my first breed dog and now, at five, is a pet only. Snow is the only breed female I have but this will be her last litter. She will be going to her forever home after this litter. She has another four years of breeding but I believe she will be better served by letting her find her perfect home. Reine and Summer are the future breeding couple and will be bred next year. Although we started breeding Cream Golden Retrievers in , we have been raising goldens retrievers for over 40 years. There is no better companion or family pet. All of our dogs are house pets. They share the house with us, their rescue siblings and a few old cats. Currently the money is going to Samaritan's Purse. Let's talk about our sweet boy Henry.Let's keep this momentum going!!! If you don't know Henry's story, Let's talk about him. He's a 4yo male boxer who was hit by a car in Ohio and left for dead. The shelter picked him up, and he waited alone for five long days for his family to come get him. They never came. A complete stranger saw the shelter's story about Henry online and wanted to help. This good Samaritan, despite knowing they couldn't keep Henry long-term, picked him up from the shelter and took him home and began to arrange medical care, while at the same time starting a search for others who could help find Henry a forever home. That's where MNBR comes in. One of our members saw Henry's story and connected us, and we stepped in to help secure a foster and ongoing medical attention for this good boy. Henry's original prognosis was that his injuries were catastrophic. He would need to have one of his legs amputated, plus additional surgeries to address what appeared to be major spine damage as well as damage to two of his other legs and hips. The situation seemed dire. But as it turns out, our boy Henry is a fighter!!! Despite his situation, he was in good spirits and started to show improvements in his legs, so the team decided to move forward with finding a treatment path for him. An MRI and assessment revealed that Henry's injuries, while extensive, were operable, and the orthopedic surgeon believed that they could save all Henry's limbs! Since then, Henry has had several therapies, including new water therapy, and he is healing! Henry is a sweet boy who is the definition of a champ! Henry arrived in Minnesota finally in January, since then he has been being seen at the University of Minnesota Veterinary medical clinic. Hookworms, roundworms, heartworms, and whipworms can get into her system in a number of ways: drinking unclean water, walking on contaminated soil, or being bitten by an infected mosquito. Some of these parasites can be transmitted to you or a family member and are a serious concern for everyone. Spay or Neuter One of the best things you can do for your Boxer is to have her spayed neutered for males. In females, this means we surgically remove the ovaries and usually the uterus, and in males, it means we surgically remove the testicles. Spaying or neutering decreases the likelihood of certain types of cancers and eliminates the possibility of your pet becoming pregnant or fathering unwanted puppies. Performing this surgery also gives us a chance, while your pet is under anesthesia, to identify and address some of the diseases your dog is likely to develop. For example, if your pet needs hip X-rays or a puppy tooth extracted, this would be a good time. This is convenient for you and easy for your friend. Routine blood testing prior to surgery also helps us to identify and take precautions for common problems that increase anesthetic or surgical risk. Genetic Predispositions for Boxers Heart Disease Boxers are prone to multiple types of heart disease, which can occur both early and later in life. Veterinary dental care and weight control go a long way in preventing heart disease. Boxers are especially prone to a life-threatening heart condition known as dilated cardiomyopathy, or DCM, in which the heart becomes so large, thin, and weak that it can no longer effectively pump blood to the body. As this problem advances, he may act weak or tired, faint or collapse, breathe in a labored way, or cough. This means your Boxer is more at risk than other breeds. When a dog bloats, the stomach twists on itself and fills with gas. The twisting cuts off blood supply to the stomach, and sometimes the spleen. Left untreated, the disease is quickly fatal, sometimes in as little as 30 minutes. Your dog may retch or heave but little or nothing comes out , act restless, have an enlarged abdomen, or lie in a prayer position front feet down, rear end up. The cranial cruciate ligament is one of the four tough bands of tissue that hold each knee together. A torn cranial cruciate ligament is a common injury in active dogs, which includes your Boxer. Usually surgical correction is done to stabilize the knee and help prevent crippling arthritis. Physical therapy and multimodal pain management are necessary to get the best outcome. Labrador energy are high energy dogs Some young Labradors are quite difficult to live with simply because they never really switch off. An inherently calm temperament does help to create a relaxed dog. But a lot of the hyper and excitable behavior we see in well-exercised dogs is learned. In other words, the dog has found that restless and annoying behavior works for him in some way. All too often we inadvertently reward and encourage excitable and attention seeking behaviors in our Labradors. We spend a lot of time thinking about how to stop dogs being bad. And sometimes forget to notice when they are being good. When your dog has been driving you mad and pestering you all day, your understandable reaction to his temporary air of calm, is to tiptoe past and ignore him. We do this with kids too. Happily, you can teach yourself to reverse this approach. Put some fresh treats in it each morning, ready for the day ahead. If you keep the treats in a tin or in the fridge, your dog is going to be leaping around with excitement each time he hears you rummaging about for his reward. Your job is simply to capture a moment in time when your dog is lost in his own world, totally at peace. He could be lying on his back in his zippy bed with a look of bliss on his face. Stretched out on his side in the sun in the back yard. Or snoozing by the fire whilst you watch TV in the evening. All behaviors that in the past you would ignore. Your dog may appear to be doing nothing, but this is still a behavior, something he has chosen to do. And all behavior can be encouraged and increased if you reinforce it using rewards. But if you find it impossible to do this without him leaping all over you, you can use a reward marker, so that your dog knows that he is being given the treat for relaxing. With a bit of practice, chilling out will soon become second nature If you forget to use the marker, just put the treat away. There will be another time. Say it quietly and calmly. And only when he is relaxed. The idea is to avoid getting him excited or worked up. Remember only use the reward marker if you really need to, and only when he is fully relaxed. Follow it as quickly as you can with the treat. And yes, when you first start this training, your unexpected generosity may have the opposite effect. You may feel as though your peace has been shattered — for now. But you need to be persistent. Ignore any silliness, and simply wait for the next time he relaxes, then try again. In the long run, overall, the more you reward him for relaxing, the more often your dog will relax. Relaxing in different places The ability to relax outside the home, even when there are interesting things going on around him can also be taught to your dog. You should start this training at home, then progress to park benches, outdoor cafes and so on. Just put your dog on the leash, sit in a chair with your book, and read while you wait for him to relax. Once he has given up on you and laid himself down, head on his paws, place a treat next to his face and go back to your book. Treat the dog at intervals, and after a few minutes more, get up and carry on with your walk, or whatever you want to do next. Always begin this training in quiet locations, and work your way up to busier ones, once the dog has learned to settle as soon as you sit down. Sometimes two or three hours. Some eight week old puppies will empty their bladder in the garden, come indoors and wee again just 15 or 20 minutes later! This is very annoying, but it is a short-lived phase. Restricted Access Many people find it hard to cope with their puppy simply because they are giving him access to too large an area of the family home. He has no chance of learning to be clean if he cannot be watched constantly by a family member and is far more likely to have accidents on carpets, than on hard floors. He will also be constantly in trouble for chewing things he should never have been able to reach. Baby gates are a brilliant way of restricting very small puppies to a fairly small designated part of your home with washable floors. The puppy can then be gradually introduced to more rooms as they mature. The Right Feeding Routines Puppies often have sensitive tummies. Especially in the first few days and weeks in their new home. Most Labrador puppies are greedy and will eat large meals. The quantities on food packet are daily rations and should be divided into at least four portions to begin with.
