You establish the times for going to sleep and waking up. Be consistent. Thereafter do not place anything in the crate until his potty training is well under way. The idea here is that if your puppy has an accident he will be wet and uncomfortable until you come to rescue him. However, make sure you check on him frequently to be sure that he is not getting into trouble. Crate him when you leave the house, at least for the first eighteen to twenty-four months of his life. Remember, he is not considered full grown until he is two years old. When your Poodle has proven that he is trustworthy while you are home, you can then allow him out of his crate while you are out. Start with short periods of time. Eventually, when he can handle small amounts of time, you can extend his free times to longer and longer periods, until he can be home alone several hours of the day. My puppy will go to the back door when she has to potty and wait at least 30 seconds for me to let her out. Now, this definition does not eliminate all potty accidents. While your puppy may be potty trained and perfect in your own home that may not be the case everywhere your puppy goes. However, I was talking to a colleague of mine who has experience working with hundreds of puppies. Finally, I think her previous caretaker may have started her training before she came to our home. Since we crate train all of our puppies our answer to this question is the same as our original answer. Of course, our answer is not without a little insight. I suspect new puppy owners who use their crate properly to potty train their puppies are accident-free sooner than those who do not use a crate. The key to potty training is to prevent your puppy from having accidents in the house. The crate is a great tool to help prevent accidents in the house. A properly crate-trained puppy will not pee or poop in the crate. Therefore when you go to bed at night you should not have to worry about accidents in the house. During the day when you need a puppy break, you can crate your pup and not worry about accidents during your puppy break.
