Margaret O. I could not be happier. A mentally healthy dog is so important. Our little guy came to us in an unexpected unique way. After a previous family was unable to take him, Jeff called us and asked if we were interested in coming out to meet the puppy that same day! They are willing to sit and talk through any questions you have, they give you a lot of information about the breed, and what to expect when you bring your puppy home. Another big plus for us was seeing that the kennels were clean and all the dogs that we saw looked very healthy. Our puppy was the sweetest when he first met us! He ran up to us, showered us in puppy kisses, and was just overall a happy chill little dude. He just had his first vet appointment and was given a clean bill of health! He is sweet, gentle, and such a fast learner! I have never met any dog with this level of intelligence and at such a young age! We have only had him for 6 days and he has settled in so quick and has already learned basic commands. Thank you so much Jeff and Rhonda for our new little addition to our family! When we first went to meet with them and take a peek at Adrian and Barus litter, we liked that they had all the dogs in the home and the home was clean!!! Adrian had a calm temperament as well as the rest of the dogs. Caught on extremely quick w the training and is extremely good with our young grandchildren. We definitely chose the right breeders. Good communication and great canine genetics are obvious! Response from the owner Thank you so much April for the kind words. Rhonda and I try very hard to make things special for our puppy families. Pride and integrity means everything to us. Rhonda takes care of pupies like her own kids! We have 3 of their dogs one male that is the puppy of untox and panja. H gets to play fight likes that and playing with his ball. Rhonda was spectacular to work with, detailed and friendly. She is one of the most intelligent, healthy puppies we have ever owned and her temperament with our family is world class. When we were looking for a puppy we met with Rhonda and could not of been happier. There dogs were so well behaved, stunningly gorgeous and just wanted to be loved. Exactly what my wife and I were looking for. We all no there is never any guarantees in life when it comes to purchasing a puppy, but I can say we have a true champion in our little Bella. Best temperament, easy to train and an absolute sweetheart. However, I have an extraordinary story to share about my young pup. Mila our female puppy has a sense of medical issues. At .I typically experience these attacks once every year or two. At first, I thought maybe I spilled so food or something on my shirt, so I changed my shirt, but she continued. Then a little over an hour later, I had an attack. Mila did not leave my side for the entire time. No matter what way I tried to lay in bed to get comfortable she would move her body to press up against my gallbladder. Normally she is crated at night and does great, no whining or anything.Having her warm body and the slight pressure of her body next to me really actually helped. The next day I was back to normal, and Mila went to her crate for bed no problem. We are Lucky to have the beautiful Ozark Mountain country charm for our home. My boxers do make wonderful therapy dogs and assistance companions along with security for those who need a watch dog. I have MS so my puppies are use to the canes and walker and not getting under foot at an early age. They like being lap babies and playing with the kids. I do sleep very well at night thou with 5 boxers sleeping in my house free to alert when they hear something. They do protect their property and family. All puppies are bottle fed along with feeding on mom because we feel it helps mom out and doesnt wear her down as much and it gives the puppies stimulation and human contact daily with having their bellies rubbed, toes and ears so they are adapted to that contact from birth. We also give plasma to the newborn babies to help booste the immune system. I want to Thank you for taking the time to look at our puppies as potentiel members for your family. Visitors and inquiries are always welcome call Fine dogs of whatever breed are a thing of beauty. In the case of boxers from a reputable breeder, you will usually pay more than what an owner is charging since these breeders usually have to pay higher licensing and insurance fees as well as build kennels and other facilities that would be suitable for breeding dogs. In addition, reputable breeders will allow you to take the boxer home with a signed contract that prevents them from breeding their dog or selling it to other people. However, there are usually people who breed boxers as a side hobby and will be quite willing to make a deal with you. Although it is not recommended that you buy from these people, they usually give the dog away for free or for a very low price because they are trying to get rid of their dogs. In addition, buying from someone who breeds boxers as a side hobby may be cheaper. How to Find A Responsible Boxer Breeder in Missouri To find a responsible boxers breeder in Missouri, the best thing to do is consult your veterinarian. Since there are many reputable breeders in this state, asking people who live nearby would be advisable as well. If you cannot ask anyone locally for help, then using the Internet will also allow you to look up lists of accredited dog breeders which may give you some leads on finding reputable breeders. Another important factor to consider if you want to buy a boxer puppy in Missouri is where the dog will live. Although Missouri does not have any requirements for the living conditions of dogs, it is always best to find out how big the kennel or barn will be and what the weather conditions are like in order to make sure that your boxer puppy can adapt to its new environment. Visit Your Missouri Boxer Breeder in Person In order to find boxers for sale in Missouri from a reputable breeder, it is important that you visit their kennel or farm. Although there are many breeders who advertise through the Internet and will ship a boxer puppy to your home, it is always best to buy a dog from a local breeder since they can ensure you good customer service. Visiting your Boxer breeder in person will also give you a chance to see the kind of environment your boxer is living in. This will allow you to determine if their breeding practices help promote good health and temperament as well as how they treat the dogs. It also allows you to connect with the breeder and makes it easier for you both to establish a strong relationship. Questions to Ask Ask for References from Your Boxer Breeder in Missouri When you are searching for a Missouri boxer breeder, making sure that the boxing breeders in your area are trustworthy is just one of the most important factors to consider. You must know that not all reputable boxer breeders would be aware of how to raise their puppies correctly. References will be of great help in making sure that you will only be dealing with the most reliable boxer breeders in Missouri. For these reasons, asking for references is one of the best ways to ensure that they are professional Missouri boxer breeders. Ask Your Missouri Boxer Breeder if You Can Meet Past Customers Asking your Missouri boxer breeder to introduce you to their past clients is one of the most effective ways in order to determine if they are professional or not. If possible, you can also ask for referrals at this time. If these references and referrals are promising, then it basically means that they are reliable boxing breeders in Missouri. However, always keep in mind that not all reputable boxing breeders would provide these things right away especially when it comes to the safety of their puppies. Take note that responsible and trustworthy boxers breeders would look out for the welfare of their pets before anything else. This is why you must always make it a point to trust the boxer breeder in Missouri only when they are willing to hand over these things. Does the boxer breeder in Missouri that you are considering working with have a good relationship with their veterinarian? This basically means that they are responsible when it comes to taking care of their pets and not just looking at them as a source of income. You just need to remember that not all reputable boxer dog breeders would be easy to work with. In fact, you should already know this when looking for boxers in Missouri since not everyone has the same standards and expectations. This is one of the most common signs which point out that you might be dealing with an unethical Missouri boxer breeder at this time. They ask for payment during the process of the transaction. Before getting to work with Missouri boxer breeders, they must first know what kind of payment they are looking forward to accepting. If they immediately ask for payment even before doing anything, then this is one discouraging sign that points out that you might be dealing with an unethical boxer breeder at this present time. To them, money comes first and not the welfare of their pets. What good does a verbal agreement do? There are a lot of people who would prefer written contracts since these things hold both sides accountable. This is the kind of question which you should ask your breeder even before anything else. If they keep on telling you that nothing is wrong with them, this is yet another discouraging sign which points out that there might be something wrong with their facilities right now. So make sure to ask this question before agreeing to any contract. Remember that this is not just another pet since they are known to be quite destructive. So if you want them to do this somewhere else, make sure that you give them something which they could use for this purpose like chew toys and bones. But at the same time, it will also depend upon their age. If they are still young, then it might take some time before they would chew on things other than their own toys and bones. Just keep in mind that these pets would eventually grow up one day, and they will start exploring your house. This is the only way for them to learn what kinds of things are appropriate or not. You must never forget about this since this would have a long-term effect on their behavior later on in life. Just be patient when it comes to training them so everything would go according to plan. If these pets go to the bathroom inside your house, then this can lead to a lot of serious problems for both you and them. Remember that training your pet is essential because it helps strengthen your relationship with each other over time. They need enclosure crate training:Crate training works hand-in-hand with potty training which is why you should not forget about this one thing above all else. They would give you some good advice which will help improve the overall relationship that you have with your pet. Just have patience with them since they will eventually learn what you want them to do regardless of how long it may take. Enjoy your brand new Boxer puppy. I love animals and love helping people adopt a pet. It all started when attending Missouri State University and I began volunteering at an animal shelter.

The English type should have a blockier and fuller head, shorter muzzle, lower ear set, rounder eyes, stouter body structure, as well as a lighter color than the American type see comparison figure below. As an adult, it has been a pleasure to now show and selectively breed these beautiful English Golden Retrievers. The care and love you, Heather, and all at Classic Heritage devote to these pups is remarkable. The efforts taken to ensure pups are matched with their new happy forever home are excellent. Everyone I met was equally professional, educated, loving, kind, and a lot of fun. All of the dogs are beautiful and happy. We have had the best experience and have the most loving pup so anything we can do to help Classic Heritage we would. We have recommended you to everyone who has asked. Well, due to Google, we actually have one in Turkey, so, pretty far away! As a Golden Retriever breeder, we adopt out a few great pups that we have been able to find some great families for. We have been fortunate to have some great golden adults. They have heritage links to some great well know kennels such as Liberty Kennels from which President Ford's golden came from; Gold Rush Kennels with their english creams and whose owner R. Ann Johnson published a well researched textbook on golden pups; and, also from Golden Glen Kennels that were well know for their dark goldens for their obedience and hunting. These are all our dogs - our pets first and foremost! We have been fortunate in gaining many referrals from past adoptees, as well as some of those getting 2nd, even 3rd, pups for themselves! We greatly appreciate our adoptees - past, present, and future. Our children participate in the breeding a little more each year! We have been doing this for 19 years since .Our adoptees say that our pups are better than they've found from most breeders when they come to pick out their pups. Of just over pups in 19 years, there has been great health history with no cancer. Any health issues have been mostly environmentally caused or some pretty common parasites that we work diligently to ward off for you and the pups. These are our babies, newborns, just like our kids that come home from the hospital. The pups are raised in our home, and socialized with tender loving care, on wooded and meadowed acreage with a pond. She was never bred, but our Golden Retriever adoption service is in honor of her, now residing at the "green tennis ball retirement lodge". This is the first pup, from our first litter! The Goldens we Breed: We have three spectrums of Golden pups and parents, primarily based on their coloring - See our "parents" page for complete information 1 English Cream bred with another English Cream. These come primarily from "Gold-Rush Kennels" lineage who have a long history of top dogs. These are the darker to dark red goldens that we started breeding with and come from great lineage both from "Liberty Kennels" back east from which came President Fords dog; and, "Golden Glen Kennels" with a long history of hunting and obedience backgrounds. This is a combination of the two above and produces some great pups in a range of medium light English Cream Golden to a medium to light medium dark "mocha" coloring. We have chosen not to breed the "average" golden that tends to be the light medium to medium in coloring with a fairly long coat. This is what the AKC considers the "standard of the breed". You will see these around, but mostly you will see them at a dog show; and, are the only range of Goldens you'll see shown. These average goldens have been way over bred, including a fair amount of "inbreeding", and they tend to have the most health problems due to this. There are some very beautiful dogs in this category, but by far we feel you will find the most beautiful, distinctive dogs with predictable great temperaments and health within the English Creams and darker Goldens. Our personal favorites are the very dark goldens, though hard to find. They specialized in the very dark goldens for hunting and obedience trials. Unfortunately these two ends of the spectrum do have their own caveats. The English Creams are fast becoming over bred with claims of grandiose backgrounds, rampant breeding of so-called "English Creams" "specially imported" from some country by a breeder, and they don't look much like a golden, and come with arbitrary high prices. With the darker Goldens, especially the darker red's, they are in a sense being hi-jacked by seemingly elite hunting breeders, generally requiring you to only use the dog for hunting activities a "working dog" ; and, subsequently, the "Golden community" is starting to lose these dogs that make fantastic intelligent companions and they also make great "help" dogs for people. Several of our darker Goldens have gone this route, as well as for hunting. This is not to say that the English Creams aren't good for this, as well! Most of our dogs, and the pups produced, have what we call a "long flat silky coat" that tends to be easier to care for than the very thick haired show golden and with generally less shedding. The English Cream Goldens tend to be somewhat fluffier and shed a bit more, while the darker goldens tend to maintain the flatter silky coat with less shedding. All our adults have good health backgrounds with their parents or grandparents, and farther back, having lots of OFA and CERF certifications for eyes, hearts, elbows, hips; though we go more by our health history because "certifications" tend to imply to many a level of "perfection" and unfortunately these are living beings, essentially just like us humans - see our health page for more health info. The darker Goldens tend to have a penchant toward hunting senses and abilities, though pups from all parents have been used for hunting. Some people favor the lighter, english cream goldens for their somewhat more mellow temperament, and somewhat lower energy level. However, be careful of seeking "mellow".This is especially true with a golden. We've never met or heard of a true golden retriever that doesn't have an inherent mellow temperament and that wants to bond with THEIR human. All our adults and pups, light to dark, have primarily the boxy heads with shorter snouts, though some have a somewhat longer snout. They all have wonderful traits of mellow dispositions, eager to please, and are "easily" obedience trained. We do provide the "one word" commands on our website, so you can start right away, but it does take comittment. The pups are socialized and surrounded by their siblings and mother and other dogs and all of our family 3 children, carefully monitored as well as visitors. Pups generally are released to their new homes around 8 weeks old. We do not recommend getting them much later, as the sooner they are with you, the sooner, and better, they will bond with you, instead of us or their siblings or parents. The ideal bonding time is from weeks old and gradually decreases at around 12 weeks of age; however, you will not find a golden that won't bond with a human at any age! Our pups have been placed in adoptive homes ranging as pets and companions to elderly care companions to pheasant hunting dogs to mascots on fishing boats to very happy apartment dwellers to families with 4 to 5 children. As a breeder under the USDA "Animal Welfare Act" we are classified as an "Exempt Business" - Anyone who sells domestic pets directly to pet owners is exempt, regardless of sales volume, when picked up face to face or may be sight-unseen when the breeder has 4 or fewer breeding females. Such sales can be made via internet, in person, or by mail.
Articles The Golden Retriever is considered one of the most popular double-coat doggies in the world. It is known for its long and luscious coat that looks red, amber, and sometimes golden. It is known for being lovable and trustworthy and is one of the perfect breeds for dog competitions or shows. In order to keep your Golden Retriever looking dapper but also protecting their health, you should consider giving them a trim or cut. A Full Shave is recommended for Goldies with medical conditions or severe matting, while a Kennel Cut is great at keeping a Goldie looking sharp and neat. In addition, you can try out Field Cut before bringing the Goldie on an outdoor trip. There is the option of visiting a pet salon for that extra after-trim care or trying it out yourself at home. A cut does not have to be the same boring one, and we have some cool suggestions that you can try out. Puppy Cut Image from Instagram: d. It can be done on a Golden Retriever or any other pup breed you may have at home. In addition, it ensures that little to no fur is shed on your furniture and car seat. The functional role of this cut is for doggies that are part of a show, like dog shows and competitions. This cut is neatly done around the ears, private parts, and paws. Keen attention to detail is important during trimming. This cut is all about trimming your pup, leaving it with a short coat that will not weigh it down when wet. It also helps your pup to dry up much faster. This type of cut is short enough to also protect their skin from swimming pool chemicals. If the water mass that your doggie spends time in is a natural water source, you can opt for a different cut. Summer Cut Image from Dog grooming and sitting A Summer Cut is one that is presumably designed to keep your pup cool during the hot days of the year. It is more about getting rid of the top coat and keeping a short haircut all through. It means keeping the cut to an inch or shorter and can be done around the ears and personal zones. It is also important to note that a Golden Retriever has a double coat which keeps them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. To ensure that you have the best summer trim, you should consult a professional groomer. Simple Trim Image from Instagram: gldpaws If you are looking for a cut on Golden Retrievers that does not demand too much work, the Simple Trim is the best option. It is all about doing a nice trim of the long hairs as well as any dead or unmanageable hairs. This cut is done all over the body with a focus on around the neck and chest area. It is all about keeping your pup feeling cool but, at the same time, protecting them from bites, skin irritation, or the biting cold. The style makes your pup look like a large teddy bear because you have to feather the coat for that look after the cut. You can get the help of a professional groomer for that perfect teddy bear finish. The main purpose of this cut is to get rid of any excess hair that can trap dirt and other debris or get caught on branches or bushes. This cut requires you to trim the hair short throughout the body and keep it at the same length. It is much shorter than Teddy and Puppy Cuts. In fact, they last much longer than other cuts as they will grow out evenly over time. There are a few reasons why your Golden Retriever may need a full trim, and this can be useful in treating a medical condition or dermatitis, getting rid of dead hairs, and doing away with matted fur. This means it is a cut for extreme situations that may arise. It is shaved as close to the skin as possible. It is important to note that you should resist a Full Shave on long-haired doggies because they need their fur to regulate their body temperature. The fur is also responsible for preventing bug bites or skin irritation. Yes, you need to take your Golden Retriever for a regular trim. The main role of a shave is to get rid of dead hairs while regulating the body temperature at the same time. Golden Retrievers are known for their long fur and look great in their dense coats. Their coat is known to shed naturally, which is also great. There are different cuts to choose from, so you should not feel restricted to a simple shave. After shaving, a Golden Retriever will have shorter fur, which allows them to roam freely outdoors or swim without worrying about dirt or debris. They should feel cool in the summer and also warm in the winter, depending on how clean the shave you have chosen for your Goldie. You are advised to trim or lightly shave them to prevent their hair follicles from getting destroyed. This can mean their lovely coat may never grow back. Golden Retrievers have a double coat that looks great and protects their skin from external elements, such as extreme heat, skin irritation, and bug bites. Care and attention should be a priority when trimming or shaving your furry friend. Avoid shaving below an inch to the skin, and keep the trim uniform all over. As mentioned, try not to cut too close to the skin to prevent hair follicle damage, which can prevent the hair from growing back. It may not make much difference to the dog, they will still get warm and their coat will still protect them, but they will look neater and even more majestic. Show Cut The simple trim is functional and primarily benefits you, as the owner. Trim, feather the fur, and properly trim the paws, ears, and sanitary areas. Because the show cut is for dogs that are being shown, it requires a lot more attention to detail. You will need to ensure that it follows the right shape and that you do a good job of cutting areas like the paws. It may be worth getting a professional groomer to complete this trim. Summer Cut Summertime is when a lot of owners decide to shave their dogs. It makes sense in many ways—your dog is hot. Getting rid of their double coat will reduce the temperature and even the weight that they have to carry around. The summer cut is a good alternative. It is more shaped than a puppy cut but can be as short. Keep the shape of the coat but cut it down to an inch or shorter. The Teddy Cut The Teddy Cut is a professional cut that is specifically offered to breeds like the Golden Retriever that have luscious, long double coats. It helps regulate temperature and keep them cooler during the summer months without affecting the double coat itself. The body is clipped really short while the legs are scissored to their natural shape. The tail and feet are also trimmed and curved to shape. This cut makes your dog look fluffy and like a teddy, hence its name, and it will help keep them cool and minimize the risk of damaging their natural, double coat. Golden Retriever Haircuts: Final Thoughts The Golden Retriever has a long list of recognizable attributes, but they get their name from their beautiful golden locks. Whether you exhibit your Retriever, or he is a family companion, you can provide him with a haircut that keeps him cool, ensures that he looks his best, and that will not damage his incredible double coat. Featured image credit: Olena Brodetska, Shutterstock Contents. However, with numerous grooming options available, selecting the perfect cut can be overwhelming. But fret not! So instead of shaving, consider a different haircut that keeps them cool and comfortable. Summer Cut Some dog owners may believe that shaving their dogs will help them cope with the heat during the summer. Then, trim the ears, chest, feet, and personal areas for added comfort. Puppy Cut Have you ever heard of a puppy cut? The term derives from its simple approach: the fur is cut to around half an inch and is the same length all over the body. One of the benefits of the puppy cut is that it is simple to maintain, comfy for your pet, and leaves enough hair to protect them. While it will not entirely eliminate shedding, it will help lessen the amount of fur that winds up on your furniture. It allows them to regulate their body temperature in the summer without harming their natural coat. The torso is trimmed short, the legs are scissored to shape, and the tail and foot are cut in a curved shape. This cut keeps your dog looking fluffy like a teddy bear while keeping them cool and protecting its natural coat. First, remember that their double coat acts as a natural temperature regulator and shields them from the sun and other elements, so cutting it too short may cause problems. For example, a shorter cut may be suitable for a dog who spends a lot of time outside in the heat, but a longer coat may be preferable for a dog who spends most of his time indoors or in cooler weather. For a nice haircut, look for a groomer with expertise in golden retrievers who can advise you on the ideal cut for your dog. Moreover, to keep your dog healthy and happy, ensure they are up to date on their immunizations before going to the groomer. The thickness of their coat and the length of time they spend indoors versus outdoors can all influence whether a haircut is required. One thing to remember is that a complete shave is not recommended for Golden Retrievers during the summer. Instead, a skilled groomer can trim their hair to a lower length while leaving their natural undercoat intact. Protecting Your Golden Retrievers from Overheating During Summer Golden retrievers are great dogs , but their thick double coats can make them uncomfortable in hot and humid weather. It can be harmful and even dangerous when a Golden Retriever becomes overheated. Heatstroke signs in dogs include excessive panting, weakness, vomiting, and even collapsing. Fortunately, there are things you can do to keep your pet cool and healthy during hot weather. Here are some pointers: Offer plenty of fresh water: Always provide clean water for your Golden Retriever. You can also add ice cubes to the water to keep it chilled. Avoid exercising during the hottest portions of the day: It is best to exercise in the early morning or late evening in the summer. Maintain a relaxed environment: If your Golden Retriever spends time indoors, ensure the house is air-conditioned or has sufficient air circulation. Avoid walking your dog on the scorching pavement: It can burn their paws and cause them to overheat, so take shady routes or walk during more excellent times of the day. Following these tips can help prevent your Golden Retriever from overheating and keep them healthy and happy during hot weather. Get veterinarian assistance immediately if you suspect your pet is suffering from heatstroke. Benefits Of Regular Grooming For Your Golden Retriever Regular grooming has various advantages for your furry friend, including: Increased self-confidence and socializing: Regular grooming can help pets look and smell better, leading to improved self-confidence and socialization. Healthier skin and coat: Grooming helps eliminate dirt, dead skin, and loose fur, lowering the risk of skin irritation and infections. It can also encourage healthy hair growth and reduce shedding. Bonding: Grooming allows owners to bond with their pets while also building trust and affection. Improved circulation: Grooming enhances blood flow and circulation, promoting healthy skin and coat. Grooming pets regularly can help keep them healthy, happy, and looking their best. Arranging a summer haircut ahead of time might help them stay relaxed and healthy throughout the season. Also, planning ahead is usually preferable, so you do not have to stress at the last minute. Dog grooming salons can get quite busy during the summer, so make an appointment for your dog ahead of time to prevent losing out. Be sure to schedule a summer haircut and get ready to enjoy the hot weather before your pup is panting and overheating! Proper Nutrition: A balanced diet is crucial for a healthy coat. Hydration: Keep your dog well-hydrated during hot summer days. Provide fresh water at all times and consider adding wet food or water-rich fruits and vegetables to their diet. Proper hydration helps maintain a lustrous coat and prevents dryness. Protection from the Sun: Just like humans, dogs can suffer from sunburn and heatstroke. Flea and Tick Prevention: Summer brings an increase in fleas and ticks. Protect your Golden Retriever with preventive treatments recommended by your veterinarian. Regularly check for any signs of infestation and promptly address them to maintain a healthy coat. Bathe your Golden Retriever as needed to keep them clean, but avoid excessive bathing, as it can strip away natural oils. Professional Grooming: Consider scheduling regular professional grooming sessions for your Golden Retriever. Professional groomers have the expertise to trim and shape the coat appropriately, reducing the risk of overheating and maintaining a neat appearance. Stay Active: Regular exercise helps improve overall coat health by promoting good circulation and reducing stress. Engage your Golden Retriever in outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day to keep them physically active and mentally stimulated. Remember to monitor their coat regularly for any changes or signs of skin issues, and consult with a veterinarian if you have any concerns. With proper care, your furry friend will shine under the summer sun! Conclusion In conclusion, grooming your golden retriever is essential to overall health and well-being. Regular grooming can help avoid skin irritation, matting, and discomfort associated with excessive shedding. Finally, scheduling a summer cut can help ensure your pet stays comfortable and relaxed during the hot months. So go ahead and treat your pet with a decent grooming routine! While a summer cut will not prevent all shedding, it will help reduce the amount of fur on your furniture and home. Thus, while a summer haircut may not wholly eliminate shedding, it can make it more manageable for you and your pet. Will a summer cut make my golden retriever more susceptible to sunburn? To keep your dog cool and comfortable, consider using dog-specific sunscreen and offering plenty of shade and drinks. Its double coat is essential for controlling body temperature and protecting the skin from the sun and other factors. Cutting their hair too short can cause skin irritation, sunburn, and other health problems. The golden retriever , of course! With a heart of gold and a coat to match, it's no wonder how the golden retriever is known as one of the most popular dog breeds. Friendly, loyal, and intelligent, goldens make great family dogs and fur-ever companions. They love adventures and love to play, meaning, their medium-length locks will inevitably get dirty and have to be groomed. However, before you take any dog to get groomed, it's important to know what type of coats they have—a single coat or a double coat —as some haircuts may not be the best fit for your canine companion. Due to their upbringing as gundogs bred to retrieve waterfowl and upland game, golden retrievers have a double coat, or two layers of fur—a dense, water-repellent outer coat and a thick, soft undercoat. For this reason, golden retrievers shouldn't be shaved since their double coats keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Ready to take your playful pooch to their next grooming session? We've selected the best golden retriever haircuts to fit any pup and pet parent's preference, lifestyle, and budget. Puppy Cut The puppy cut is a fan favorite among dog parents—and for good reason! It's simple, cute, and low-maintenance. While the length can vary based on the pet parent's preference, your golden's fur is typically cut to be around half an inch in length and is trimmed to the same length all over their body, says Reda Elabd, certified master groomer and owner of Central Park Pet Spa in New York, N. Summer Cut Want to keep it easy, breezy, and beautiful for your cover dog in the summertime? The summer cut is calling your golden's name! Opting for a cut like the summer cut provides comfort for your retriever when temperatures start to rise. The summer cut keeps your dog's ears, chest, and feet well-trimmed, as well as their sanitary areas. Simple Trim If you're looking to keep your golden retriever's natural shape, the simple trim is—well, simple—and a wonderful option to keep your retriever's fur tidy. Plus, it doesn't require much cutting at all. It's a style Elabd recommends year round. The coat around the dog's neck and chest could also be thinned," he says. Show Cut Let your golden's natural beauty shine with this low-maintenance, natural cut. The show cut does not require much cutting, just trimming the fur along with the paws, ears, and sanitary areas. This cut has many small details that your groomer will be able to make to show off your golden retriever's beautiful locks. Teddy Bear Cut What does your pup have in common with a teddy bear? They're both cuddly, golden cuties! The teddy bear cut is another great haircut option for summer. Elabd describes the cut as one where the legs are kept at their natural length, the body is kept short, and the tail and feet are trimmed and curved to shape. This helps regulate your retriever's temperature with a double coat and keeps him fluffy and tidy. How to Maintain a Golden Retriever's Hair at Home If you have a golden retriever at home, you know goldens have feathery, soft coats that shed a lot as it is—but especially in spring and autumn. Chances are, your black clothes have your sweet pup's hair all over them. So, what can you do to somewhat control your dog's shedding? Golden retrievers should be brushed every day to remove dead hair and prevent matting. These pups do not necessarily require "haircuts" but more so hair trims because of their double coats. It's best to get your golden retriever on a routine grooming schedule with a professional groomer to keep their coats healthy and well-maintained. It's recommended to brush your dog's teeth at least twice a week, trim his nails at least once a month, bathe him once a month more if dirty , and check his ears frequently and clean with an ear cleaner if you notice they have an odor or are red. As much as we love the beautiful coat on our retriever, the constant shedding can become a bit much at times. If you own a golden, you may want to limit the shedding by cutting its hair. Here are some adorable haircuts that will keep your furry friend looking spiffy. It is an adorable option for the sizzling summer months. The cut keeps its coat neat and fluffy while regulating its temperature. The hair on the body is shortened and the feet and tail are trimmed to match its shape. The cut provides your pet with a shortened coat without the risk of damaging the undercoat. The cut is unlike shaving and protects their double coat. It is a simple cut that is easy to maintain and leaves your pet looking stylish and peppy. The length of the fur is cut to about one-half inch from head to toe. Your Goldie will still shed but the cut will help to minimize the amount of hair on your sofa and bed. This is a wonderful cut to keep your pet looking cute and fluffy but leaves it clean and comfortable. Usually, pet owners will take their dog to a professional groomer to get this cut. Especially if they have entered it into an upcoming dog show or event. The Show Cut is much like the simple trim. Once the coat is trimmed, the groomer will focus on the ears, paws, and areas that may be unsanitary. You may think it is a good idea to shave the dog in the summertime, but the double coat is what protects it from things like ticks and the hot sun and should not be shaved. The feet, ears, and chest are heavily trimmed, so the dog looks clean and polished. The groomer will also trim the private areas, leaving the dog fresh and free of germs. The groomer shapes up the coat so it is clean and tidy. The length of the hair is trimmed, and the fur is feathered. The groomer will thin the chest and neck fur to keep the coat looking well groomed while maintaining the shape of the dog. This cut keeps the coat protected so the dog stays warm and healthy. It will remove the dead skin cells and hair so the skin can breathe freely. Brushing their coat produces natural oils to keep their coat shiny and healthy. Bathing: Bath your dog regularly with a dog-specific shampoo. Ones with oatmeal will soothe their skin if it has been irritated by bug bites of debris. With a few drops of ear cleaning solution, massage the ear for 30 seconds. After the dog shakes its head, wipe the ear clean with a soft cloth. It can be extraordinarily straight, wavy, or curly. The double coat and the undercoat of a Golden Retriever are very thick. The thickness allows them to repel water Golden Retrievers have a thick coat that sheds a lot, so they are not considered a hypoallergenic breed The hair on the base of the tail, back of the legs, and under the stomach of a golden is heavily feathered The feathering of the hair is what makes a Golden Retriever look posh when they hunt and run. Conclusion Keeping the coat of a Golden Retriever clean and trimmed makes them look classy and proud. It is the shiny golden locks of a Golden Retriever that make them highly recognizable, along with their sweet and playful expressions. So, keep on loving them and caring for their coats so they look polished and healthy. Aim for an even length all over for the outer coat, and never let the clippers eat into the undercoat. Golden Retriever Haircut Styles If you take your golden to the doggy salon, there are a few other styles beyond the simple trim that can be a good choice for your dog. This draws attention to the tail and hind area, and leaves your pup looking a bit like the name suggests: a teddy bear. The cutting focuses on the paws, ears, and sanitary areas. An experienced groomer will know exactly how to do this cut for the best results. Lyme disease — Ticks enjoy the summer months as much as dogs do, as there are many more animals for them to feast on, potentially causing Lyme disease. While dogs should be protected with a flea and tick medication, they can also be vaccinated against Lyme disease. H3N2 — This type of canine influenza spreads rapidly and is always a risk when dogs get together. This happens more in the summer as dog parks fill up or vacationing owners leave their pups at the kennel. Most kennels require proof of H3N2 vaccination before they will accept dogs. Read our guide to the puppy vaccination schedule here. As well as being an irritant for your dog, ticks can cause Lyme disease, and fleas transmit heartworms through their bites. Find our recommendations for the best flea treatments here. And when you head out, carry a water bottle for them as well as one for yourself. Carry it in something with a bowl-like lid that your dog can drink out of. They will appreciate chilled water, just like you. Let Them Swim Golden retrievers love swimming, so why not let them take the occasional summertime dip to cool off. They would love a wading pool in the backyard to cool off when necessary. It can be better to give them a thorough rinse. And try to avoid chlorinated water as it can turn their beautiful golden coat a bit green. You might notice your golden seeking out places like cool bathroom tiles. When you go out with your pup, make sure to keep an eye out for shady places where they can rest. Not only will this help them keep cool, but it can give them a break from the direct sun. Dogs can suffer from sunburn and develop skin cancer just like their human pet parents. You might even be able to feel a bit of heat through your shoes as you walk on the asphalt. More than that, asphalt reflects heat, and their body and head are much closer to the asphalt than yours are. It can get very hot for them very quickly. So look for grassy strips and light-colored surfaces for them to walk on. We all know what burning hot sand feels like under the feet! Test surfaces with your own hand or foot before expecting your dog to walk on it. As a rule, never cut their outer coat shorter than their undercoat. Can you shave a golden retriever? You should never shave a golden retriever because it disrupts the balance of the double coat. They have a short undercoat that acts as insulation against both the heat and cold. Then they have their longer topcoat that protects their skin from dirt and repels water. If you shave them, they will no longer have that topcoat protecting their undercoat and their skin. Plus, when it grows back, it will just never be the same. How often do golden retrievers need haircuts? Golden needs to be groomed every weeks. But this means cutting the hair around their paws and private areas. The Verdict — Golden Retriever Haircut For Summer It is normal to be worried about your dog overheating in the summer, especially when they have a thick double coat like a golden rRetriever does. While the heat can be dangerous to your dog, their coat is not the main concern. Their double coat works like insulation that keeps them warm in winter and cold in summer. You can give it a trim if you want, but most goldens will get by fine without. Remember that if you are feeling hot, they probably are too, so give the same consideration to their comfort as you do your own. Do you have any tips for helping goldens fight the summer heat? The Miniature German Shepherd puppy tends to have more of the classic appearance of the standard German Shepherd parent, but it is a smaller breed of dog. The characteristics of Miniature GSDs are a combination of nature and nurture: genetics of the parents, the environment and the quality, type and amount of training and socialization. Loyalty and companionship Any mix of German Shepherd is likely to be extremely loyal and have a very loving temperament when trained and socialized properly. They will make a very caring and protective companion, for any dog lover. They can be very loving and affectionate dogs and enjoy company, and the more active their lifestyle the better. Reputation: The German Shepherd is a confident breed that looks fiercer than its actual behavior. The Miniature German Shepherd is a very cute mix and because of its smaller size it could be forgotten that this breed has a reputation for being a fierce guard dog and possibly one of the listed dangerous dogs when not trained and socialized properly. When handled correctly and properly trained the mini GSD can be an affectionate and reliable dog for a family or individual dog lover, who wants a companion. And a mini mix that tends to have the GSD look will be highly popular and desirable too. Although smaller it will still be an agile and alert dog that will need lots of mental and physical activity. The trainability of this intelligent shepherd breed dog should be fairly easy. Positive reinforcement and small treats will work well with this dog but not harsh control, any form of negative punishment or physical restraint as it may rebel. The mini GSD puppy is very energetic and easily bored, so to prevent mischief it will need at least one hour a day minimum exercise, building up hours a day in adulthood. That means they are clever, alert and used to working hard when trained. This dog is fairly easy to train and will love to have challenges and a working purpose. They will be strong, resilient and love a challenge with both mental and physical stimulation involved, otherwise, they may misbehave. Socialization: Early socialization and learning discipline are strongly recommended for any German Shepherd crossbred dog. Any type of hybrid dog with two intelligent parents will be strong-willed and want to be kept active and useful. They will not want a sedentary lifestyle and will enjoy as much exercise and action as the owner can provide. When trained and socialized this mixed breed dog will be approachable and friendly around children and other animals. Purpose: This breed will be loyal and true to their owner and protect them to the end. If the other parent is a collie then both were bred as fearless working dogs for herding and protection. This means they will want to work for their master and keep busy. Even is the other parent is a poodle or a smaller dog, they will still be clever and want to serve and obey their owner well. Behaviour: This breed can be strong-willed and needs to be trained early as it can easily and will become destructive, or bark if under-stimulated. Physical Characteristics of the Miniature German Shepherd Apart from being athletic, attractive and family and stranger friendly, the miniature German Shepherd will be loyal and protective, playful and guard its family and home with precision. Temperament: Intelligent, agile, noble, proud, alert, energetic, athletic There is a certain amount of controversy surrounding the breed, as the name is somewhat of a misnomer. Many backyard breeders attempt to sell the breed as a truly miniature version of a standard German Shepherd, but the truth is that the dog is a mixed breed. This means that the Mini German Shepherd may share many similar traits with a German Shepherd but may inherit other traits from their parent breeds too. If you are looking for a carbon copy of the German Shepherd in a smaller package, these, unfortunately, do not exist. That being said, the Miniature German Shepherd is a wonderful hybrid breed nonetheless, and if this dog sounds like it may be the one for you, read on for an in-depth look at this unique breed. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. Miniature German Shepherd Puppies A post shared by Ailbhe Donohue ailbhedonohue Miniature German Shepherds can vary fairly widely in appearance and size, depending on what breed the German Shepherd was bred with. While they do often resemble a smaller German Shepherd, remember that due to their mixed genetics, they will not have the same temperament and characteristics as a standard German Shepherd. They are typically hybrids of a German Shepherd and a Border Collie or Poodle, so the resulting crossbreed is usually just as smart as their parents. The same goes for energy and exercise needs; with those parents, these dogs are high energy! These dogs need more exercise than even a purebred German Shepherd, and as any Miniature German Shepherd owner will tell you, it takes a great deal to tire these pooches out. This makes them excellent guard dogs, and they will do anything to protect their owners, just like a standard German Shepherd. One plus of having this smaller version of the German Shepherd is that they are highly adaptable and can live in small homes and apartments happily, provided that they get sufficient exercise. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They have a strong instinct to protect their owners, so they make excellent guard dogs. Like their parent breeds, they thrive off of human companionship and adore being around their owners. This can be a problem if you are out frequently, as they are prone to suffering from separation anxiety. If you are away from home for large chunks of time, this is probably not the breed for you. German Shepherds have a strong prey drive, and Miniature German Shepherds are much the same. This means that early socialization is essential for this breed — the earlier, the better — to prevent them from going after the family cat! Around 2 or 3 cups of high-quality kibble are ideal and should be split into two meals a day to prevent bloating. Be sure to check that the first listed ingredient on the food is an animal-sourced protein and that the food is free from too many filler ingredients, such as wheat, corn, and soy. While these dogs are not prone to getting overweight, too many of these ingredients can cause weight gain and digestive issues too. This will add welcome variety and give them a boost of high-quality protein and amino acids. We recommend at least 1 hour or 2 a day, but the more, the better. This could be a run, jog, or bike ride or an intensive interactive game, like fetch or frisbee. These intelligent pooches will love agility exercises and games, and this will give them plenty of mental and physical stimulation. Remember that these dogs have lineages that were bred for a specific purpose, and the closer you can get to giving them directed exercises, the better. They are highly intelligent, so mental and physical stimulation is essential to prevent boredom and undesirable behavior. Just like other working breeds, these dogs respond well to positive reinforcement training methods. This method requires consistency and dedication, but the result is well worth it. Try to begin training your dog from the day that you bring them home, as this will help set the training and prevent them from picking up any bad habits, which are harder to fix. The key to training these dogs well is consistency and repetition, but try to make training a fun experience and avoid too many of the same exercises. German Shepherds can be stubborn and aloof at times, and the same trait may be passed down to your dog. Early socialization with people and other dogs is crucial for avoiding this and will make training them easier. Bathing them with human shampoos or too often can strip their coat of its natural oils and cause further shedding and even allergies down the line. However, there are no guarantees, and there are a few issues that may be passed down from their parent breeds, including hip and elbow dysplasia, hemophilia, and epilepsy. Gastric dilatation-volvulus is fairly common in dogs with deep chests, so be sure to feed your dog two to three small meals throughout the day and avoid feeding them after exercise. Degenerative myelopathy is fairly common in senior German Shepherds and may be seen in German Shepherd hybrids too. Minor Conditions. Life Span Did You Know? A Miniature German Shepherd is a cross between a German Shepherd and a smaller dog breed that is meant to result in a smaller version of a German Shepherd. Although these Mini Shepherds can inherit any combination of traits from their parent breeds, they tend to be energetic, intelligent dogs that bond closely with their families and are affectionate with them. Miniature German Shepherds make great family dogs. They may be hardworking while on a job, but they have a playful spirit while relaxing with their family. They also tend to get along well with children and other dogs in the family. Although they tend to do well with smaller pets they have been raised with, they do have a high prey drive. Mini German Shepherds are also protective and alert. They will bark to alert you and will be naturally suspicious of strangers. Proper socialization and training early on can help make sure barking does not become a nuisance and will help them open up to strangers once introduced. Miniature German Shepherds are highly adaptable dogs. They tend to be a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. But, they can adapt just as well to apartments as long as they get the exercise, mental stimulation, and attention they need. They do well in most climates, but are sensitive to heat. Because they bond so closely with their families and want to be near them, they do not do well with long periods of alone time. Mixed-breed dogs can sometimes be healthier than purebred dogs because of genetic diversity. However, this is not a guarantee. They could inherit no conditions common to the parent breeds, but they could also inherit some or all of them. So, make sure you are asking them about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. For the Miniature German Shepherd, potential health conditions to be aware of include progressive retinal atrophy, hypothyroidism, epilepsy, and hip dysplasia. Because of their body shape, they are also at risk for bloat. Although Miniature German Shepherds are highly intelligent dogs that pick up on things quickly and are eager to please, they can be difficult for first-time dog owners to handle on their own. Their high energy, working dog instincts, thirst for learning, and need for structured training can be overwhelming for first-time dog owners. Because of this, puppy training classes are recommended if you are not an experienced dog owner. They help reinforce training, strengthen the bond you have with your dog, and also offer opportunities to socialize a puppy. In general, a Miniature German Shepherd will have a coat that sheds moderately year-round and heavier seasonally. Brushing a few times a week, daily brushing during seasonal shedding, and the occasional bath is usually sufficient for this coat type. If a Miniature German Shepherd has a Mini Poodle parent, there is a chance they could inherit the low-shedding Poodle coat. Weekly ear checks with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. Although good dental care for dogs is essential, it is often overlooked. This is one of the reasons why gum disease is one of the most common health issues in older dogs. You can help protect your pup from painful dental diseases later in life by brushing their teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day and keeping up with regular vet visits. Although a Miniature German Shepherd may be smaller than a German Shepherd, they are still a high-energy dog with working dog instincts. In addition to having a job to do, these dogs also need daily walks plus playtime and time to run to be happy and healthy. If they like it, swimming can be a good low-impact activity while they are still growing. Once puppies finish growing , you can try higher-impact activities like hiking, running, training for dog sports, and more to see what they like. A fully-grown Miniature German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs about 50 pounds. There can be some variation depending on the other parent breed in the cross, but meeting the mother dog in-person can give you a better idea of what size to expect in a Mini GSD. A Miniature German Shepherd generally lives for years. If the other parent crossed with a German Shepherd is a Standard Poodle, the result is a Shepadoodle. Featured Miniature German Shepherd Article. Besides being hard-working herding and guard dogs , miniatures also have a bit of a soft side. They are not as aloof as full-sized purebreds, but may appear standoffish when around people or dogs they do not know. They are very protective of their owners and will be loyal to them. Those mixed with Golden Retrievers or Poodles have calmer temperaments than those mixed with Border Collies. Poodle or Golden mixes are ideal for families with children. Border Collie mixes will be higher strung and do not thrive in households with kids. This mix does not bark much. Regardless of temperament, all mini German Shepherds need daily mental and physical stimulation. Mental stimulation can come in the form of puzzle toys, feeders, sniffing outside, or training sessions. Physical stimulation can be jogging, walking, running, herding, or agility exercises. This mix requires a bare minimum of 60 minutes of daily activity. There is no guarantee what miniatures will look and act like. Most puppies retain the characteristic appearance and personality of the German Shepherd, but there will be some variation depending on the cross. A mini German Shepherd lives longer than a German Shepherd, on average. Miniatures can live up to 15 years, while purebreds live between 12 to 14 years. This is due to the fact that smaller dogs age slower than larger dogs. Also, being a mixed breed dog helps most minis have a longer lifespan, this is known as hybrid vigor. There is still a chance miniature German Shepherds will inherit health conditions from their parents. They are prone to hemophilia, elbow dysplasia, hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, gastric dilatation-volvulus, epilepsy, and pituitary dwarfism: Hemophilia is a genetic condition where a dog has impaired blood clotting. Elbow dysplasia occurs when the bones forming the elbow joint are improperly aligned or have uneven growth patterns. Hip dysplasia occurs when the hip joint socket does not nicely enclose the head of the femur, creating looseness. Degenerative myelopathy is a progressive breakdown of the spinal cord. This results in hind limb weakness and paralysis. Gastric dilatation-volvulus is a condition in which the stomach bloats and rotates on itself. It requires surgery to fix due and can be life-threatening. Puppies can be affected by dwarfism and growth hindrance. Dwarfism is an autosomal recessive disorder. Affected puppies will have legs that are abnormally short, bodies that are abnormally long, and hair coats that may have patches of baldness. There is some controversy surrounding miniature and teacup dog breeds. Some people mistakenly assume that a mini breed is simply a smaller version of its purebred parent. This is not true! The miniature German Shepherd is not a purebred dog breed; it is a hybrid mix. These smaller puppies can keep some recognizable traits of a German Shepherd, but they are not purebred. Some breeders try to sell their miniature puppies as purebred dogs. They do not exist unless you are considering dwarf, however these dogs come with many health problems. Most miniature German Shepherds are created via crossbreeding. There are two other ways that breeders may have litters of minis: Pituitary Dwarfism Breeding Runts Breeding two German Shepherds that are both carriers of the Pituitary Dwarfism gene is not ethical. Dwarves can be affected by many health conditions such as hypothyroidism, poor kidney function, and skeletal defects. Dwarves are not the same as miniatures. Some breeders selectively breed German Shepherd puppies that are runts. This can also produce smaller puppies after several generations. Similar to dwarfism, the practice of intentionally breeding runts can create puppies predisposed to health conditions. These puppies will have lower than normal birth weight and may fall behind on the growth curve. Make sure to avoid breeders that breed runts or dogs with pituitary dwarfism. Miniature vs. Standard Differences Miniature German Shepherds can be half the size of standards! This means they do not grow taller than 20 inches and weigh no more than 50 pounds. Due to their smaller size, minis have a slightly longer lifespan of 15 years. At first glance, mini German Shepherds look just like purebreds. They will likely keep the alert, athletic and muscular appearance of their purebred parent, but it will be on a smaller body. This means they are mainly tan and have a saddle-shaped black pattern on their backs. Other coat colors include: white, black, sable, black and silver, or black and red. They generally increase the price of miniature German Shepherds.
These dogs are born from Poodles with other purebreds like pugs, Labradors, or Cocker Spaniels. Since the s, doodle dogs have increased in their popularity—and it's not a wonder why. These breeds are often low- to non-shedding, and are consider to be a safe bet for most people with allergies. Their personalities make them ideal companions for many people, too. For example, Bernedoodle dogs tend to be more stubborn but they have lower energy than a Goldendoodle. Another thing that people should look at is the generation of the doodle. Generation refers to how far removed from a purebred pairing—like a purebred Poodle and a purebred Labrador as parents. Which ones are your favorite? This has become one of the most sought-after "Doodle breeds" due to their winning combination of good looks, smart wits, and hypoallergenic coats. They also make reputable therapy pets. They also go by the name of Wheatendoodle, the Wheatenpoo, the Sweatendoodle, and the Sweatenpoo. These are energetic dogs, but despite their high energy, they don't tend to bark much. They are a rare breed mix and may be difficult to find. This small, fluffy, high energy breed is an adorable addition to the family—especially if you are looking for a dog that's rambunctious and loves to play with the kids. They are on their best behavior in the company of their owners, as they tend to bark or dig when left alone at home. Incredibly smart, energetic, and loyal, these pups have a work-hard, play-hard mindset that best suits someone with an active lifestyle. These are big, lovable dogs that are incredibly smart and equally stubborn. But while training them takes additional patience, the reward of their loyalty and devotion is well worth it. Because a mix can take on any combination of traits from their parent breeds, you want to make sure you ask about the other parent breed in the mix. Should a Standard Poodle Mix take after their Poodle parent, they will be a loving, loyal, energetic, and playful dog that makes a great addition to a household. Poodles are known for being fantastic family companions. They are upbeat, cheerful, sensitive to their owners, intelligent, and playful. They get along well with children and other dogs. They can have a high prey drive. So, they may need some extra socialization and training with smaller pets in the household. They also have a protective instinct, which makes them initially wary of strangers. But, as long as they have been properly socialized, they will warm up quickly. If the other parent breed has a similar temperament, then you can expect the same in a Standard Poodle Mix. You can also meet the mother in-person to see what behavior she is modeling for her puppies and the manners she is teaching them. The breeder should have started socializing and training puppies. But, once you get them home, it is up to you to continue to train and socialize a puppy so they grow into a well-rounded dog. A Standard Poodle is a highly adaptable dog breed. Although they tend to be better suited to homes with yards where they can run, they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get enough exercise, attention, and mental stimulation. As with any dog breed, a Poodle is sensitive to heat. When temperatures drop, they may need some winter dog products to stay warm. They also do not like to be left alone for long periods of time because they bond so closely with their owners. If the other parent breed is similar, then you should be able to expect a similar adaptability level from a Standard Poodle Mix. But, they may still have some quirks they could introduce, so you want to ask the breeder about them. Just as they could inherit none of the conditions common to their parent breeds, they could also inherit all of them or a combination of them. The other parent will introduce their own potential health concerns, so you want to ask the breeder about them. Reputable breeders will be screening their dogs to make sure they are not passing issues to puppies. So, you should plan to ask about the health history of both of the parents anyway. You can also ask to see test results or clearances from any health evaluations that have been done. Standard Poodles are also one of the dog breeds at a higher risk for bloat. Poodles are intelligent, in-tune with their owners, and eager to please. This makes them a great fit for owners of all experience levels. The other parent breed could make them more difficult to train so you want to ask the breeder about them. If the other parent breed is just as highly trainable, then you can expect a Standard Poodle Mix to be highly trainable as well. They often offer socialization opportunities while also strengthening your bond with your puppy. One of the reasons there are so many Poodle mixes is because of their low-shedding coat. Although a Standard Poodle Mix could inherit the low-shedding Poodle coat, they could also inherit a coat similar to the other parent breed or a coat that is a combination of both. Also, a low-shedding coat does not always mean a low-maintenance coat. Should your Standard Poodle Mix inherit a full Poodle coat, you will need to brush them every day, bathe them occasionally, and get them professionally groomed every weeks. Good dental care for dogs , like brushing teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste daily, helps prevent painful dental diseases later in life. Poodles may have a fashionable reputation, but they are also sturdy and athletic working dogs. They are also high-energy dogs that require a lot of daily exercise and mental stimulation to be happy and healthy. If the other parent breed is also a high-energy dog, then you can expect your Standard Poodle Mix to have high exercise requirements as well. Even if the other parent breed has a lower activity level, you will still need to be prepared for the possibility of a high-energy dog. A fully-grown Standard Poodle usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. The other parent breed can affect this, especially if they are the mother, so make sure you ask the breeder about them. Standard Poodles generally live for years. Although the other parent breed may affect this slightly, you should be able to expect a similar life span in a Standard Poodle Mix. This is because they have hair instead of fur, which means they do not shed the way that other dogs do. In this article, we will discuss some of the most popular Poodle mixes and why you should consider adopting one. Poodle Sizing Unlike most dog breeds that grow to be one standard size, Poodles actually come in three different sizes: Standard, Miniature, and Toy. Some people refer to a fourth size, medium, but medium-sized Poodles are not widely recognized and are often considered standard size instead. Mixed breed dogs do not tend to have a uniform size because offspring will favor one parent or the other. Because Poodles come in different sizes, you will notice that the size of Poodle mixed breeds will tend to vary widely. These balanced formulas keep their bones and muscles strong throughout their growing periods and can ward off later joint issues, a common breed problem, as they mature. There is a greater demand for quality nutrition during the early growth stage. For these reasons, you must feed high-quality food. Now, consider what to feed a German Shepherd puppy based on their age. These feeding charts and guides will help keep your new companion growing strong and athletic. Tiny portions of canned, wet foods are introduced. Meals per day: 4 or more Puppies should stay with their mom for to keep them healthy. Nutrition Warning! At 8-weeks-old a GSD pup is eating more solid foods and develops a better appetite for kibble and other foods. Add in only a couple of small spoonfuls of canned plain pumpkin, unsweetened Greek yogurt, or cooked oatmeal to entice your pup to eat. Meals per day: 4 Week-Old Puppy Continue feeding the same as the 8-week-old diet. Treats are not only enjoyable for your German Shepherd, but help you to eneterain and build a positive relationship with him. Be sure to keep their zoomies under control by playing plenty of fun German Shepherd games for puppies. Meals per day: 4 Week-Old Puppy Continue to feed the kibble. Watch for excessive weight gain during this growth time as their bones cannot take extra weight! Too much weight gain too quickly can cause joint issues as an adult and prevent healthy development. Use their mental energy to help keep them more relaxed throughout the day by playing brain-boosting mind games for German Shepherd puppies. Meals per day: 3 to 4 Week-Old Puppy Keep your puppy trim and athletic by monitoring how much you feed your puppy and their body condition. You can write how much they eat and track this over time, and adjust how much your feed your German Shepherd puppy to keep them at a healthy weight. Try using fresh, raw, cut-up pieces of carrots as healthy treats or small, deseeded cubes of fresh apple as part of their training treats. Keep your eyes open for a growth spurt about to begin! Meals per day: 3 Week-Old Puppy Around 4 months old, you might notice your puppy finish their meal quickly and look for more food. Be sure to watch how many treats you give them throughout the day. You can do this by holding them safely in your arms and weighing them with you on the scale. Then, place them on the floor and step onto the scale without them to weigh yourself. Remember, around 16 to weeks old your German Shepherd puppy begins to rapidly grow. Instead, when looking overhead at your puppy their waist should look trim and not rounded outwards. German Shepherd puppies should appear sleek in their waistline. Meals per day: 3 Week And Older Puppy Continue to feed your German Shepherd puppy dry kibble with a small amount of healthy foods mixed in. You can lessen the healthy food you mix in gradually if you prefer. But, even as adults, German Shepherds love a bit of tasty toppers on their kibble. Around a year old, begin feeding your German Shepherd puppy 2 meals a day. Two meals, one in the morning and evening, are not only safer but also provide your German Shepherd with sustained energy to fuel their high-energy lifestyle. You can create a positive meal time by using the following tips: Always offer fresh water during their meal times. Keep the area where they eat their food in calm and out of the way of the family hustle and bustle. I found sitting with a book reading, just keeping my GSD puppy company, encouraged my dog to eat their meals while giving us time to quietly bond. Feed your German Shepherd at the same time everyday. The best time to feed a German Shepherd puppy is in the morning, before you leave for the day, and in the evening, about 2 hours before you put your dog to bed. Allow them to potty after eating to ensure their comfort. Your dog also needs to eat at other times of the day for their health and growth. How much you should feed a German Shepherd puppy really depends on a number of factors. Your GSD pup should eat enough to maintain their growth and energy, while not carrying any extra fat. Every dog is different. Keep in mind the number of calories in the kibble, which varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. Each puppy food company has a different amount of calories and size of the kibble. Here are a few things that might affect how much your German Shepherd puppy should eat. The more active a German Shepherd puppy is, the more calories he needs to eat to replace lost energy. For example, puppies need nearly twice the amount of calories as compared to adults. And older or senior German Shepherds who are less active need less food. Health Maintaining a healthy weight is essential to feeding your German Shepherd. Simply put, you can prevent some medical conditions and health problems by monitoring their waistlines. Instead follow the healthy way to bulk up a German Shepherd. This type of dog food is also usually fresh and not stored for long periods, whereas most commercial diets can be stored for months. Many companies sell premade raw food plans for German shepherds. These are typically either whole carcasses or pre-ground food that comes in bone-in or boneless form, and can also come ground for easier meal prep. Some diets are created so they have less need for supplements, but it is still important to read the ingredients list to make sure you know what your dog is getting each day. Some vets are advocates of this type of diet for dogs, but others are not. If possible, get a second opinion from another vet. Yes, a german shepherd can eat a raw diet. A gradual transition is recommended over trying to make too many changes at once. Transitioning to this type of diet may require some extra effort on behalf of the owner. My brother and his wife adopted a 1-year-old purebred GSD from the local rescue who was fed kibble her whole life. This dog had an expensive surgery that required us to pay for it thank goodness we could do that! My brother tries to keep up his diet, but he works from home. His girlfriend has a hour commute every day! The dog is only fed kibble at night when she gets home from work. I would like to think that this is not the case, but after watching my sister-in-law do this the dog gets overly excited for each bite. See also Male vs. And then she poops sorry TMI. And then when she comes home from work she immediately goes outside to defecate. A few weeks ago, the poop was bloody. They saw the vet again, and the doctor said she has food allergies. Everyone wants to know what it is so they can change her diet. I want to be supportive of them…but the dog was doing so well on raw! Their friend gives them kibble, and the first kibble she tried of course it was their fault! So now all of these options are closed to them. The choice to feed your dog a raw diet is an individual one. As with any type of food plan , there are benefits and disadvantages of feeding this way. This type of food plan can take more time and effort than simply feeding kibble because it requires the owner to do extra preparation when making each meal. This is especially important in the case of raw meats, which must be stored correctly and safely before they are given to your dog. Most people who choose a fresh food plan for their GSD seem to do so because of the health benefits they see when feeding them this way. They find that their dog has fewer skin problems, allergies, yeast infections, and other medical problems than they did before. Many dogs also tend to have more energy, better coat quality, and improved dental health when given raw meat instead of commercial food. Although it can be an expensive dog food plan with all the preparation involved, the benefits may make the extra cost worthwhile for you. However, there are some disadvantages to feeding your dog raw food. This type of diet can be dangerous if not prepared correctly, especially when you are talking about meats and the risk of food contamination. There is also an increased chance of skeletal issues like bone fractures, especially with large or powerful breeds like German shepherds , who need high levels of calcium in their diets. For many people feeding their dog raw food is a new experience, and they are often unsure how much to feed. Several factors play an important part in determining the amount of food to be given. The size of the dog, its metabolism, or activity level are all very important factors to consider when deciding how much raw food should be fed. The size and weight of the dog will give you a good indication as to how much food should be given. Sprouted seeds — Sprouted seeds are extremely healthy for your German Shepherd too, although for some reason they are not as popular as raw meaty bones. You can sprout them yourself or purchase them from your local health store. You can cut up small pieces of hard vegetables such as carrots, apples, etc, and feed them to your dog each day as a treat. Dairy products — Dairy products are suitable for dogs, especially those not affected by lactose intolerance. Plain yogurt is healthy and can be given to dogs as it contains many beneficial bacteria that aid digestion. Cottage cheese is a nutritious dairy product and contains around 22g of protein per g serving making it an excellent source of protein for your dog. A small amount can be mixed in with their dry food each day to add extra flavor and make the meal more interesting, or you could add some water or milk and feed it as a wet meal. Commercial dog food — Commercial dog food is not as healthy as raw meaty bones, sprouted seeds, and vegetables however it can be fed as an alternate to the regular diet, especially if you are going away or need a break from making homecooked meals for your German Shepherd. As long as the commercial food is healthy, it can be fed instead of raw food for a few meals here and there. You can find these in meaty bones especially the liver , vegetables, fruits, and dairy products. Feeding whole foods is the best way to ensure that your dog gets all of the vitamins and minerals it needs.
