I've gone through many ropes and am certain that I will go through many more; however, when it comes to just the pure pleasure of jumping rope, the Bullet Fit is ideal. First, the rope is a solid wire coated by rubber. This is not a rope that should be used on concrete but one that should be used on a mat or other forgiving surface like a workout room or gym floor. Second, the handles are absolutely remarkable because there is virtually zero resistance where you can hold it individually, spin it, and watch it turn effortlessly for at least 30 seconds. Actually, it is more than 30 seconds but I really do not want to hype it that much. If it's able to spin that freely, then obviously there will be little to no resistance as you're spinning the rope. Fourth, this rope is customizable as you can use it simply in its native form or you can build a very good heavy workout rope by using the heavy 2" beads that are on sale. With the handles and the heavy beads, my workout rope came to a stout 9 oz. You can vary the weight by using the 1" standard and 2" standard beads. Fifth, the Bullet Fit is a two-way rope that can be set up as a traditional rope for tricks in its native form or for speed and double unders by simply repositioning the rope. In summary, the Bullet Fit is smooth, flawless, and allows you to just think about the pure joy of jumping rope as opposed to whether or not the rope is going to drag, kink, or anything like that. This is very important because it allows you to perform and do tricks with the rope without the necessity of thinking. The Bad. One drawback is that the Bullet Fit uses a wire and you can not get a larger size. This limit is not a deal breaker; however, it is one that you should consider if you like a thicker wire. The second drawback is that, when I called the company, they confirmed that they were going to stop production and claimed that they had a better product coming out. Nothing could be further from the truth as the Bullet Comp is only good if you're going to do speed work or double unders. Now if the Bullet Comp were a two-way rope, then they would have a better product; however, they do not have that product. The Bullet Fit is the only one that is a two-way rope and they should keep it for that reason. The Ugly. There will be absolutely no replacement for this product when it is gone and the price has increased from when it was first placed on clearance. Get the Bullet Fit while you can! I didn't feel like it captured what I thought of and felt when I would see a balloon floating by itself across the sky. My brother Tim helped me out a lot with writing lyrics and focusing the feel of this song. Once we figured out that perspective the song sort of wrote itself. It started out being about a family of bears in a river then changed many times before ending up being about staying cool in the summer sun. This is another song that came out of my frequent habit of looking at something small and weird and giving in an inner life. I saw part of a stale cookie on the sidewalk one day and imagined it's whole story. I wanted this one to kind of sound like a lost Bob Dylan song if Bob Dylan ever sang about old cookies. When I am out in the world and walking by the seaside and someone comes blasting by on a motorcycle with no muffler it scares me! Basically I am scared of those loud motorcycles and thought I would write a song about it that does not tell them to stop but just lets everyone know how I feel. I went out and bought a special distortion pedal to get a special fuzzy guitar tone for this one. I am also singing about how a child grows and shines like an awesome blossom. It was so cute that it quickly became I catchphrase around the house. I did a demo of the song way back then almost 20 years ago and finally got around to recording it now. It never felt really right so I stripped the lyrics away and came up with this idea the tongue twister toy boat thing. So it's sort of a song about trying to say toy boat and it's also the song about my toy boat that you will get if you can say toy boat over and over again. I guess I wrote this song from the parent's perspective a little bit. You know when a child is excited and crazy and we'll get ready for bed. Maybe if you parents out there singing this song to your crazy child in the evening it will help you wrangle them into the nighttime routine. I noticed that it was common for me to meet little baby fans at shows and they would suddenly go all shy right when they approached me. So I thought it would be good for those shy kids to have a little anthem. Now I call them "invisible lizards" and pretend that they are changing color to disappear when they feel shy. I didn't think I could love my kids and more every day but it seems like that's what happened! I just wanted to bottle that feeling of trying to take a mental snapshot of every moment when my kids were little so that I would never forget those times. Kind of like a mouse in that book "Frederick" about the mouse who absorbs summertime in the form of poetry and then when the other mice are cold in the winter he reminds them what it's like to feel warm. This one came to me about 10 years ago when I was writing for the second album but it never got recorded until just recently. It got lost in the cracks and it was like finding a shinny penny when I uncovered it again. As parents we all have to answer those "why" questions that can go on forever and ever. I thought it would be fun to make the kids questions impossible situations to illustrate how weird and random the world can seem to a kid. I kept a recording of it for years and finally turned it into this song. I had a great time making all the voices of the animals I am trying to call in this song. We all know that animals have phones right? I am pretending they do! This is another case of loving the music but not loving the lyrics to the original and trying new ones. Sometimes kids get that crazy sensory overload thing where they can't control their emotions. Underneath it all is your sweet kid but for now the sour one is louder. A kid gave me a series of dreams and I chopped them up and put them to music. I would credit that kid here but I don't remember who it was. Eventually I wrote all new lyrics with my own "dreams" in there and made it an official Caspar song. It just made me sad to think that the car was patiently waiting for the owner to return and might run down its battery before that happened. I still can see that poor car in the dark rain all alone. I decided not to resolve the story but just leave the car in the state of forever waiting. This is the true story of the actual Babypants that are part of my name. I really did find them and they really did spark creativity in me after a long blank period where I could not write and I really did loose them. Have you seen them? This started off as a slower song but I redid it to bring a little more energy to the groove. I love how it came out and if you find those babypants let me know! At least I pretended that I could and this song came flowing out. It is important to stop and just let the energy of the world flood into your being every once in a while. If you do you will be treated to a symphony of tiny grooves. I was listening to old songs one day and thought this one would make a good Caspar song. I tried a few different ways to approach the lyrics and rewrote it many times but basically ended up using the original lyrics with the addition of a couple of verses. I loved my childhood in the s and this is a love song for those times. I put out a couple of years ago was supposed to have this song on it but it just was not finished at the time so it had to sit that one out and wait for this record to see the light of day. I just wanted to capture that amazing feeling of looking out at fresh snowfall when I was a kid and feeling like the whole world had been replaced by a smooth frozen white world. It was a bit of an attempt to write something in the vein of the old Grimm's Fairy Tales. Those old poems are pretty dark but I just couldn't make the song work lyrically or musically after much trying so I shelved it. I brought it back out and made the geese into ducks and had them joining each other rather than being plucked up and made the music more rocking and the song came back to life! The verses were surreal and silly so I changed it to be about cooking up silly images in my mind and how I loved to daydream about weird stuff with my kids when they were little. This song is about that moment when a kid is mobile and walking and just about as tall as your kneecaps. I just took that idea and mixed it with weed and plant imagery. I wrote the original version of this tune in so it is another one that has been sitting around for a long long long long long time. I loved the groove and the idea of a chain of animals being the only real point of the song but his version was a bit gruesome. So I worked the lyrics into a new shape and recorded it with only voices and then slowly over many years found a musical vibe to fit the song. It is a pretty different feel for a Caspar song but I hope you dig it. Thanks for the inspiration Augie! Wellspring focuses on taking care of families who are in crisis and this young girl decided to do a fundraising campaign by going door-to-door in her neighborhood asking for loose change to give to Wellspring. Her story was so inspiring that a whole campaign dedicated to motivating young kids to think about philanthropy was born. As part of that campaign I wrote this song for her. Originally it has slightly different lyrics about saving pennies and how they could add up to create real change. I'll do the lyrics a bit to be about the joy of having a baby but the theme of expressing love for each other is the same. She says she doesn't remember that which seems pretty appropriate for a song about not being able to remember a song! Just a song about not remembering something that might help you remember something. I always loved the feel and the shape of it but the lyrics were super abstract, which is probably why it never got used before. I settled on this idea of how special it is when a child is upset and a parent can turn things around for that child and how safe and happy and loving that interaction is. I included a ton of key changes to make things musically interesting. Just let your mind open up and see what I see and you will have fun with this one! When the coronovirus hit and the shelter in place directive became real I felt kind of scared and nervous about things and I found myself gravitating toward this song. As I recorded it I felt better and remembered that during dark times I need to encourage my creativity and hopefully help others to do the same. Recently I found out that the copyright had lapsed on this tune and it is now in the public domain. That news item reminded me of the tune so I bopped out to the studio to do my own version. Go bird go! I felt like I needed to take the idea of feeling and living like a baby and make my own song because I have been toying around with that as a theme for a song for many years but had not found the right feel for it. The parody ended up not feeling quite right so I wrote new chords and melodies for it and knocked the new version out in one day of inspiration. Don't forget to see the world through beginner's eyes as much as you can. I thought it would be fun to dress it up in a bit of a modern style with chugging guitars so it didn't get TOO cute! This song would not be any help at all in that situation. I wish I could offer you more help in that situation but all I have are questions and no answers. I remember the feeling that I just wanted to freeze time as I gazed down at my kids when they were super little. Each of those moments seemed to stretch on forever. At the same time I wanted them to grow and be free so it is a mixed bag of feelings for me. BREAK OF DAWN Originally this song was about how parents will stay up all night with their kids no matter how hard it is on them but it ended up sounding like the parents were complaining so I changed it to be about nocturnal animals. I love the quiet spooky hushed vibe on this one. When I wrote it I was kind of channeling Alice in Chains believe it or not but I ended up toning down the dark harmonies that were all over the original version. I toned the original down from its loud rock roots and made it about the cycle of days coming and going. It's just a little relaxing meditation on the passage of time. I liked including images of snoring babies and chainsaws in this one. Just a simple lullaby about how sleep pulls you in and that moment of giving up and going to sleep that kids have such a hard time with. Don't they know how delicious sleep is? I put down the snacks and took up the guitar and sang that line to a little melody and eventually after 7 years of goofing around it became this lullaby. I have this one fading in and fading out so if you put this song on repeat you can leave it on in a kid's room and it will be a perpetual lullaby loop that will hopefully get them off to dreamland easily. This time I took the original lyrics and expanded them and put them to new music that feels more like marching to me. I hacked up the old songs and smashed the lyrics into the melody from the song about my son and got this ditty. Suddenly I saw this army of termites marching toward my house to eat the whole thing in one big massive attack. I started marching around the kitchen and singing out loud! I ran out to the studio and tracked this immediately. Musically I am making a nod to my old mentor Mark Sandman and his band Morphine here. I miss you Mark. I was like the music a lot and thought it would make a good vibe for a cast for song. It took me a while to get the lyrics right on this one. I had the wrong perspective for a while. I love the way it turned out and that in part is brand-new to the tune and one of my favorite parts. In looking at old songs to revamp for Caspar I found a recording of that song and loved the music and started trying to find a new subject matter. Then I was playing with a little synthesizer and made a little buzzy farty noise with it and started to imagine a mosquito buzzing around. Then I remembered that in the summertime I have a super hard time going to sleep with a mosquito in the bedroom and a song was born! I have SO many songs about monkeys that I started to cast about for a different theme. I have always sung placeholder lyrics about pickles but never had a pickle themes song so I challenged myself to write a pickle song! This lucky pickle gets a luxury vacation out of the deal. I'M A BEE I thought it would be fun to write a song from the perspective of a B flying around on a beach in the summertime desperate for a sweet treat. I am provides the verse lyrics without writing them down and allowed myself to be repetitive and sort of random with the lyrics. I had a lot of fun recording this one and making it sound kind of unique and buzzy like a bee. The lyrics were always really abstract and they ended up still being kind of abstract in the final version but they were REALLY abstract back in the day. I love nature and I think this is a love song for a fantasy of being able to live outside all the time. I was never crazy about the lyrics I had written or the recording of the song that The Presidents of the USA did so I decided to give it another spin. It took a few years to get the vibe and the lyrics right. I think I rewrote this one about 5 times before I got it to feel right! When looking at old nursery rhymes I noticed how dark and spooky they could be so I wrote a song that celebrates spookiness. I hope it does not scare anybody too much because this song gives me goosebumps everything I hear it! It was kind of about a relationship that did not work out and I changed it of course to be about that lovely interdependence that is so clear in nature and love. I really enjoy the laid back vibe of this song and the rich harmonies were super fun to put together. Before I went on I walked around the grounds and had this funny experience where all of the animals ignored me when I tried to lure them over for a howdy. As I walked I made up this song and recorded it on my phone. I found it many years later and finally recorded it. I just want to be friends with every animal I encounter. Is that too much to ask? I believe that human beings are getting better over time and I am proud to be part of our ascent to greatness! I love that silly transitional time when kids are too excited to go to bed because being awake is so much more exciting and they get so tired and upset that they cry while trying to keep the party going. I rewrote it to be more of a ballad with all the details of the dogs experience to paint more of a picture. I fee like this song is a musical number from a musical that does not exist yet! I love this song so much and I'm not sure the book will ever happen so I decided to do it shorter version of it for this album. I had a lot of fun playing around with the different instruments for each season. I guess it's my cartoon version of Vivaldi's Four Seasons"! The poor thing was covered with dust and dirt but it was also just making it's own way with a certain determination that I found inspiring. I sat on the title for a long time and then one say the song popped out. I had to rewrite it about 4 times to get the tone and lyrics exactly right but I am glad I did because I love this one a lot! We are all just slugs in the dust really. I like to squint at zebras and imagine that they are white with black stripes then shift my thinking to black with white. So I wrote a song about it! This song was inspired by a short animated piece I saw of the same name form by Yuriy Norshteyn. It is an extremely cute and magical bit of animation with tissue paper creating the layers of fog. I wanted to use the atmosphere of the animation to create a song that comes from the same world. When my kids were little I got up with them every morning that I was home from tour with the Presidents. Every verse in this song is a specific memory of getting up with Josie who woke up earlier than her older brother Augie. Josie and I had a few hours during the part of the day when the sun was rising and the world was quiet and this song takes me back to those moments with my baby daughter. It was like a little furry bullet. I just immediately started singing this song as if it was already written. I recorded it in one sitting when I got back home. Thank you little jackrabbit for being so fast. I love them. I love them so much. I really really really love them. They are my favorite. I love noodles and butter. I really really do. I love noodles. I love butter. I love it when they go together to make the rules and butter. I really do. I just do. I was trying to find a new feel for it but it just didn't work with the old lyrics. I took the lyrics away and decided to right about London Bridge involving all kinds of other characters from nursery rhymes. I guess this is sort of a song about a song. I love the download Johnny Cash vibe. This one's one of my favorites. These are the kinds of thoughts that I have! So I organized it like a classic game of addition where you add more and more animals as you go. It was fun write and fun to record and fun to listen to so I hope you like it! I love that they actually get to go to Japan in the end thanks to their booking agent who is a horse. My brother Tim really helped me out on this one. I had a different kind of Jazz field before and then I did it as a pop song and then I tried it as another kind of song and it just never jailed. I also thought it was going to be a spoken word thing for a while with no music. Finally I settled on this way and changed a bunch of the lyrics and edited out averse and finally this thing is finished! This was a song from way back in so it's nice to see it seeing the light of day. I wrote some new lyrics to include more food items for a well balanced menu. I specifically added tofu in cubes because that was one of the big hits in our house when my daughter was tiny. She couldn't get enough of "cubes with magic powder". The "magic powder" was salt! It was just a blob of crazy words with a cool groove. I stripped off the words and updated the music to work as a Caspar song and now you can dance to it even if the ants can't. The one ant that CAN dance is named Timmy after my brother Tim who is a songwriting partner of mine and a brother! The Presidents were there to do a couple of shows and I was super duper sick and stuck inside all day. I brought a tiny ukulele with me and passed the time trying to write little songs. I can't stop writing songs with monkeys in them! Eventually I recorded it and sent it to him to add guitar and snare drum and vocals and a rare collaboration was born. Originally the song was bout how some things have a song and some don't but then I changed it to be about how everything has a song but some are quieter than others. Listen up! One-day Max was walking to my backyard and he opened his hand and he had a little roly-poly pillow bug in his hand. I just started singing about the little bug while Max stood there and rolled the bug around his palm. That was a long time ago and this says stuck around a little idea for a long time. I finally put the effort into finishing it and I'm super happy with it. It sounds roly-poly in the middle part is so weird. This used to have a different title and it didn't really have a story. It was just a bunch of images of the Circus. My brother helped me figure out that I should be writing about myself in the circus. So one day when I took a seaplane up to an island to have lunch with my daughter I wrote all these lyrics on some napkins. Writing lyrics on napkins on the plane is a messy way to write a song. But I did it! I'm pretty proud of some of the rhymes in the song. So it is with great joy that I introduce to you the little song that could! Just a little reminder that even when things are poopy you can choose to see life in a bright light way and help yourself feel better. For some reason my heart broke for the little tiny pencil. I ran out of the studio and immediately started writing this song about how the pencil thinks everything is brown because it's been used so much for so many different drawings and if it ever found out that everything is not brown it would be super sad. I had to rewrite the lyrics a few times to get it right but I think I finally did. I sang "caw caw caw call the crooked crows, caw caw caw someone call the crows" over and over and my son joined in and we had a good old vacuum cleaner jam session. That little rifts stuck with me all those years even though I never recorded it and eventually it resurfaced and became this song about a bunch of crows that play at a scary party and won't stop. Horsey had everything stolen off of him except the frame over the course of the 10 years that I rode him. Finally I had to get rid of Horsey because he became unsafe. That's when a yellow beach cruiser and named it Ducky. I had written a song about loving to ride my bike but it was not feeling right. One day I was out on ducky and the melody and words for this song just came flowing through me as I road my little yellow bike by the ocean. I love you Ducky! Sometimes it's nice to be lazy. Sometimes it's nice to not do anything for a long time. I guess this song is dedicated to that special skill. There's so much thrilling achievement that sometimes we forget that we have the option of being a drowsy dopey dozy dog. That is what I am trying to tell the little worried firefly in this song. I loved working in this style with the background vocals and do wop instrumentation and groove. I prefer to be sleepy on the railroad. Trains make me so tired and groggy that I decided to change the lyrics to the old standard and make it into a lullaby. I was listening to a bunch of instrumental bits that I had lying around and one of them just made me start singing these lyrics over it and it worked! My daughter Josie helped out by singing on the song along with me. She did a great job and really made the track come to life. This is about that classic state that kids get into when they are so tired but are not in bed yet. One time my son Augie fell asleep on the top stair at my brother's house with his head on the landing and his body trailing down the stairs. He was probably the inspiration for this song. I wrote two completely different versions of this song. One of them was longer than one minute so I decided to pick the one that ended exactly in one minute. It was really fun to come up with all the little moments and sound effects in this one. It's jam-packed for such a tiny tune! We called that cloth a burp cloth. We were always looking for the burp cloth and I made up a song about looking for that little cloth. I decided to make it about a worm that reads a book everyday and doesn't want to come out to play. The lyrics just fell out of my brain and the song was born. I went to Missouri to a family reunion when I was 20 years old and my father's brother made a speech during the gathering that was very moving. He was a tough farmer and seeing him get emotional impressed me. As I looked through my old songs I realize that I wanted this idea of being emotional despite being seen as strong to reach a wider audience so I reverted to be about a robot that has a heart. I think this will be the one and only time that I ever sing about robots on a Casper Babypants album. Then I was thinking about all the animals that live in the desert and what would happen to them if they lived in the ocean. Then I thought about all the animals that live in the ocean and what would happen to them if they lived outside of the ocean. So I just wrote a song about creatures from the ocean living in the desert and in the sky and in outer space and wishing that they could be back in the ocean. Maybe this song is about being nostalgic for home? I just love imagining an octopus in weightlessness! When my kids were very little I would lay them on a blanket and sit there with a guitar and play improvisations about how much I love them and how cute they were. A bunch of songs came out of this and two of them are on this record. This one was for my daughter and is just a simple groovy love song reminding a baby that a baby is a baby is a baby. A definite nod to the Beatles influence on this one. Albums came and went and I just felt that there was something not quite right about it. Finally I decided to try stripping the words away and painting a different picture. I love the idea of a hippo gliding around and getting down on the dance floor. I am enjoying making songs about dancing. There are three on this record so try to find them all! I thought it would be fun to do a song at live shows where I ask the kids to pretend to be a tree. They can shake their branches and leaves and kick up their roots and move about. I like to pretend that trees secretly have the ability to pull up their routes and run around. I have a whole other song I'm working on based on the legend of trees that can move. In the meantime here's a tree song you can move to. I started thinking about hip-hop and how the person rapping is usually talking about how strong and amazing they are. Bubbles are weak and vulnerable and I thought it would be fun to write a rap song from the point of view of something that is not strong. Musically I'm kind of trying to send everybody back to the early 80s in New York when rap was born. I'm pretty proud of some of the rhymes and the song! It poured out of me in one sitting and the vocal you are hearing on the track is a temporary vocal that I put down right when I wrote it but I was never able to beat so I left it in there. Words like "antidisestablishmentarianism". That recording was never released at all but eventually it mutated into this idea of trying to write a lullaby but getting too excited and making it so loud but that it's not about going to bed at all anymore. Originally this song had a lot of guitars on it but slowly over time I took them away and replace them with more of a marching band oompah symphonic sensation. Stay up all night kids! George and Tom strolled through the garden playing ukuleles having a grand old time. When George went to leave he asked Tom if he wanted more ukuleles. Tom said he was okay with one ukulele but George insisted and opened the trunk of his car to reveal a HUGE pile of ukuleles. The moment Tom Petty finished telling the story I realize I had to write a song about this incredible moment. I think it's good advice to always keep a ukulele within arms reach! You never know when you need to elevate your mood with the sparkly sound of a uke. I wanted to help her to envision herself leaving her bed and dancing around much like a flower would leave its flowerbed to dance around. In the end I changed the name but the idea of a dancing flower that leaves it's flower bed and can move freely and dance as much as it wants to is the main idea of this tune. This is just a pure improvisational expression of love from a parent to a little new baby. It's fun to remember when they needed so much help especially once they've grown and gone to college like my little boy has. It was a bit too spooky and creepy so I made it about a rubber ball that I love instead of one that I'm trying to get rid of. All of a sudden the whole thing clicked. There's a great ghost movie that I love called "The Changeling" that features a scene in which a man throws a rubber ball off the Aurora bridge in Seattle in an effort to get rid of it because it reminded him of his daughter who had passed away. When he gets home the rubber ball is bouncing down the stairs of the house supposedly set in motion by the ghost of another child living in the home. I love that movie and wanted to immortalize that rubber ball in a fun positive way so that is what this song is about. There are no ghosts in this song so don't be scared! One of the little kids came up with the melody for the chorus and the other came up with the idea of doing a roll call of the instruments of the symphony. Then I called up Mozart and got him to do the middle part of the song, which features his amazing composition Eine kleine Nachtmusik. Thanks for the help Mozart! The movie was so well done and so evocative with saturated sunshine orange and yellow super eight film that I immediately picked up a guitar and started writing when the movie was over. Originally it was about a baby moving to California but somehow I thought of penguin moving there was a little more bizarre and fun. I like the way the penguin has romantic experiences and practical experiences. It's a big deal to move to a new place. I love the groove in this one and I love any excuse to play slide guitar. It was bizarre and abstract and kind of sad and depressing. I loved the melody and the guitar part but never felt like it was a song I can bring to a band or play live. I decided to crack it open and turn it into a Caspar song about five years ago and it's taken that long to figure out an angle and get the story right. This is based on an experience I had when I was a little kid where a giant crowd of bats smacked into my window and woke me up. It was super scary and I never forgot it. Eventually I decided to put words to it and make it about a lollipop that I remembered getting at Disneyland when I was a little kid. I didn't drop the one I got but in an effort to add a little narrative tension I decided to tell the story of a lollipop that fell in the sand at the beach. I can't think of anything sadder for a little kid. But don't worry it all works out in the end. I thought it would be fun to add a whole bunch more body parts than just the head the shoulders and the knees and the toes. I hope you have fun trying to keep up with me and pointing to all the parts of your baby while you listen to this song. One was high energy and kind of like a hillbilly song and the other was this one that you are listening to. In the end I thought the sensitive presentation served the intimacy of the song better and having it be a knee slapper. A nice mellow album closer about the love between a baby and a parent. The tune remained an instrumental for a long time and I was afraid that it would stay that way since typically if lyrics don't come soon new ideas will stay instrumental forever. I tracked it hoping that words would come and none did but one day as I played it on the porch the words just trickled out and the vision became clear. Sometimes you just have to be patient and wait. He and I wrote dozens of mini songs that were about 30 seconds each. I changed it to a slug because it feels more vivid to me than my own fuzzy and indistinct notion of what a Loris looks like and spends it's day doing. I lost track of how many years but it has been a while. I identified with Charlie Brown when I was a kid. It seemed that his hard luck mirrored my own enough that having the same initials did not surprise me once I realized that was the case. I couldn't fly a kite either and that was the inspiration for this song. I decided to write it from the perspective of the kites that I failed to fly when I was a kid. That album did not get distributed outside of the PEPS families that I made it for so I have been slowly remaking some of those songs and putting them out on Caspar Babypants albums. I decided to expand the lyrics and rewrite them to be about the sensation of being cozy in your home while the storms and scary natural phenomena rage outside. This song was on that record and it was a great version but when I went to update it for a Caspar Babypants record I got excited to update the lyrics. Way back when I wrote it I just had this kaleidoscopic sort of cut away vision of the woods at night and the cast of oddball characters that were crawling around in the pale moonlight. I could sing about the moon all night long! Another example of a simple translation of a surreal vision in my mind to a melodic lyrical miniature song world. The lyrics were a bit different and the feel with upbeat and high energy. A few years later I remembered that tune and changed the vibe to be slinky and dark. It feels like we are flying around fast all over the world seeing a psychedelic montage of creatures succumbing to sleep one by one. I love this one because it makes the hairs on my neck prickle. Set in and around the sea I am just asking some sea creatures if they will allow me to tuck them in as you do! It was fun to use that synthesizer sound in a Caspar song which is not usually in my palette of noises and instruments. One reason is that recorded and rewrote it three times trying to balance the sentiment with the right musical feel and that took about 7 years. Basically it is saying that no matter what kind of human you grow up to be you should take your time and enjoy letting your journey unfold moment by moment. Last winter I made a project out of listening to thousands of fragments in order to find ideas that resonated with me enough to rescue them from the trash pile and make them into something finished. This is one of them. Let's face it, flowers are pretty lazy. Those bees do all the work! I loved to play but preferred to figure out the theme song to "The Munsters" by ear than learn compositions by the masters. The title came from an old childhood memory. My friends Dave and Steve that lived down the street did not have a piano but would hang out at our house a bunch and heard me playing. The low notes being the thunder and the high notes being the rain. It was a little musical joke that I never forgot and eventually I took the title and mutated it into the song on this album. It only took 45 years to fully realize this one! I like the idea that the pulse of a heartbeat and the pulse of a day and the pulse of a lifetime are all the same but some are too slow to perceive. Poor guy. This song is dedicated to the late great Mark Sandman as well. He taught me how to play the 2 string and 3 string guitar and he is gone from us but his songs sing on and in that way he never sleeps. It turned out that it worked better with new lyrics as a lullaby. Even slowed down the lyrics are kind of dense but I think it works. I love the wah wah guitar in there all distant and watery. My second moon song on this album. I do so love to sing about that moon. This one was a long strange journey that I can't believe is over. I had a bunch of friends that all liked to play funny little broken down oddball instruments and we used to go to the beach or a park for the afternoon and play these hypnotic jams until the sun disappeared. But the song never worked as a recording. No matter how many versions I tried it failed somehow. I tried it quiet and loud and everything in between. Finally I stripped the chorus and rewrote it to be clearer as far as the vibe I was trying to capture. Recording it still proved super hard but I finally struck the right balance and after 25 years and remixing this version 34 times I can finally let this song go! I had him on a little blanket in he living room and as I stared at that glorious little kid I sang "sunshine pig making his way through the universe! The song actually ended up in an ad for the BMW Mini back in the day. Eventually after picking it apart for years to make something else out of it I landed on the rich tradition of those beloved ten little pigs and the new Caspar version was born. I decided that I wanted to rewrite this classic to include more than just a dog. So I wrote new lyrics about loosing an entire menagerie of animals and all the speculating that goes along with lost pets. I use to wake up with her every morning and walk all over the place with her strapped to me and this was a song that I sang while we walked. I forgot about it and just stumbled onto it while listening to old fragments one day. It was super fun to record and I hope you have fun listening to it. Then I cracked it open and worked it out so that a young tick that moved to the city is calling his parents and telling them not to freak out because he is safe and sound and living ins a FREE COUCH! Puzzle solved and the song came out super duper. Put on your dancing shoes and turn it UP. I hope this song will help you in the morning with your routine, as you get ready to head out the door. I like to imagine this one being performed in a nightclub in 's New York by a dashing flamingo. Every time Kate and I would see a tug boat out on the water we would pretend it was named "Pushy" and it had a bit of an attitude of superiority. When it came time to make the song I figured I had to do more than just describe her so I made up a story about another tug named "Huggy" coming along and falling in love with her even though she can be pretty prickly. It's a tugboat love story. Many many years later after listening to the tape a few times this little jam stuck out as something to build on but it took many many more years before I stumbled on to the right way to sing about this idea of time healing all wounds. Some things are worth the wait. I don't know where it cane from but I love it. Just a bunch of thirsty animals that need to get their paws and claws on some thirst quenching coconut juice. None of them can get it together to get the coconuts out of that silly tree. I get thirsty just listening to this one. Of course, as is often the case with things Kate says, I immediately heard a song in her silly proclamation and rushed out to the studio to write and record it on the spot. I can't remember what the original lyrics were but I changed it many years ago another song I have had for a long time! I love dirt. My favorite part is the concert hall made of "rocks and roots". I can really see it. It had a really odd time signature and the "oo wee oo oo oo oo wee" part that I found myself humming to myself for years afterwards. Finally I changed his original lyrics about a chipmunk hitting the ground at terrible velocities to be about a crow that tries to steal a delicious piece of pie and a classic was born! I decided to expand it as I do! I used a tone for the music from The Specials song as a tribute tot he moment of inspiration. I changed the lyrics a bit and took the weapons out of Froggies hands in the first verse! I had fun messing with these lyrics for sure. What a fun party. I wish I had been invited to that wedding. Of course I included some fresh movements so you can shake things up with your kid. It's just a simple moment to have interacting with your baby. Well, nobody under 6 years old I guess. I wanted to write a sort of classic blues structured song and chose the bedtime these because a lot of kids feel pretty strong emotions around that age old never ending chore of winding down for sleep. I hope that maybe this song helps parents with the bedtime routine. I love to wonder what animals think and the hardest animals to figure out to me are invertebrates. What are those little doo-dads thinking about? In the end I just don't know and that's OK. Sometimes nature is a mystery! I love spooky grooves but I always wondered why the theme of ants marching was wrapped up in such a spooky tune. So I decided to make the lyrics spooky too so the music and the lyrics would go in the same direction. My good buddy Fysah Sands helped out with some great soul vocals to give it an extra spooky feeling. Put this on when you are getting ready to go out to trick or treat next Halloween! This is another song that has been looking for a home on an album for a long long time and it has finally found its place. I feel like this song could be in a musical about a guitar that was left on the moon. As I pulled out of the parking lot of the rental place I put on the turn signal and it made this little two note rhythm that immediately inspired a melody form me and as we moved all day I sang with the turn signal Eventually after toying with lyrical ideas I saw a stand up comic talking about how toddlers are always excited to run away from their parents but don't have any idea what would happen if they got away and the lyrical idea for the tune was born. I have forgotten most all of the songs I learned as a kid during my 10 years taking piano lessons but this one stuck with me. I added a second part that I wrote myself and a bunch of imagery of relaxing sheep. Usually you count sheep to go to sleep so counting sheep that are relaxing a bunch of different ways should be the MOST relaxing thing to help you sleep. The melody is Welsh and dates back to the sixteenth century and belongs to a winter carol, "Nos Galan", while the English lyrics date to .As with a bunch of these old classics I have tweaked the lyrics to make them my own and give them an updates feel. The song was first published in in a collection of Watt's writings. As with all of the traditional songs on this album that refer directly to Christ and God I have decided to secularize the lyrics to reflect a more family oriented perspective on the holiday season. I loved making the new middle part for this one. Adding new bits to old songs is on old my favorite things about songwriting. I have always loved that tune but wanted to find a new way to do it so I finally settled on adapting it for this album to be about different light sources in the wintertime. Hope you dig it. I decided to go for a chugging feel rather than an oompah vibe. Even though it is now associated with the Christmas it was actually originally written for the Thanksgiving holiday! I updated the lyrics to be a little less old fashioned in the wording and to flow a bit better for my style. I scrapped all the lyrics once I decided to call the album Winter Party I realized I could turn this unfinished song into the title track. So I wrote new verses about all the animals gathering for a party in the winter. Feel free to do a tiny little miniscule wee baby funky dance to this groovy tune! I just turned up the energy a bit and kept the lyrics as they were. It felt right in this case. All I wanted to do was to with you a merry Christmas. Pretty straight forward. It seemed to take forever and ever. Originally this song was just about how awesome candy is but that seemed a little irresponsible since I tend to stay away from sugar to stay healthy. So I sat on it for a few years until this album came along and I gave the candy a new story. I love this high energy little ditty AND I love candy canes in moderation! One day during the recording of the album I had a funny vision of a pumpkin that does not rot after Halloween but instead floats around in the woods until Christmas eve and can't rest until it is let in to someone's house and shown some Christmas cheer. The song just poured out of me and came together in a flash! I think I invented the word "decomposted" for this song as well. Is that possible? Why not! It was fun to track this and make my voice sound different for the different parts. An easy song to join in with and sing along so feel free! The original lyrics do not actually refer to Christmas at all or describe a decorated Christmas tree. Instead, they refer to the fir tree's evergreen qualities as a symbol of consistency and faithfulness. I decided to have this one change keys as it goes on so that is gets more and more uplifting. I really love this song. So tender and sweet. As with most old songs I record I wanted to make the lyrics new and more "Babypants-ish" so I changed it all to be about animals of course. So no more partridge in that pear tree. Now it's a porcupine. A young priest, Father Joseph Mohr, had come to Oberndorf the year before. He had already written the lyrics of the song "Stille Nacht" in .The melody was composed by Franz Xaver Gruber in the nearby village of Arnsdorf. Before Christmas Eve, Mohr brought the words to Gruber and asked him to compose a melody and guitar accompaniment for the church service. Both performed the carol during the mass on the night of December .All I did was, again, remove the religious references and make the lyrics more broad based and add a bit of a country feel and a brand new middle part! So it is a bit of a three way collaboration between Mohr, Gruber and Babypants! It is a Scots poem written by Robert Burns in and was set to the tune of a traditional folk song of the time. Back in the old days I used to go to The Dog House before it was closed down and sing this classic at midnight on New Years Eve with all the regulars. Those were some of the best New Years Eves of my life. I decided to translate the old Scottish saying into English so that kids could understand the sentiment behind the lyrics. I ended up writing a bunch of new lyrics that refer to the original vibe of the song, which is nostalgic and emotional. I made a little Christmas greeting song for her show a couple of years ago. One day I heard it as I was strolling through my unreleased songs and expanded it to be this little album closing mellow tune. My favorite line is "X is for X-mass a handy abbreviation". I was pretty proud of that one! Hope you enjoy this album closing mellow tune. One morning I was up with my daughter watching the sun come up over the Cascade mountains and I began singing this little song to her about all the love I felt for her and how it made all the bad parts of life seem little. I love you Josie! I got to use a BIG horn section on this one too. Delaney Murphy sent me this song and I tweaked the lyrics and put it to music and here it is in all it's little glory. I wrote a song for the ice cream man that drove around in my neighborhood when I was a kid and hoped to put it on a Caspar album but this song turned out better then mine so I recorded this one instead. I like the idea that the ice cream man is trying to hide instead of wanting the kids to get their ice cream. So thanks Delaney for the great song! I just started singing this to myself in the car when I was driving around one day for hours. I don't really know where it came from. I love the little sort of African pop solo part in there. That was super fun to make. This was not one of them. I found this in a collection of odds and ends that I ended up with after he passed away a couple of years ago. I couldn't believe that I found a song that he had written that he had never shared with me. It was just the chorus and one verse so I set it to music and wrote some more verses for it and before I knew it I had written a Caspar song with my dear departed old Daddy. Love you pop. I tried and tried to find a way to move this tune into the future without loosing the original imagery and intent of the song. The term "pop goes the weasel" was a slang for loosing a button on your coat in s England. The "eagle" in the story was a pub so "in and out the eagle" was a way to say in and out of the pubs. Basically the song is bout choosing drink over taking care of your tattered clothes or yourself! I decided to change it to be about a band in London in the s that has unexpected success and then tries to stay on the charts but ends up back on the street busking for pennies. A cautionary rock and role fable. I always loved the image of a tiny horse but never took the time to turn it into a proper narrative song. Finally I did and boy oh boy was it hard to do! I must have rewritten this one 5 times to get the balance of abstract and narrative to work. You know.I am glad my mind is weird or this song would not exist. Then I suddenly remembered the old story about the runaway pancake and how I had not tackled that story yet in song form. So I stretched her name out to Annabelle and tried to write it. The trouble was the rhyming part. I could not paint the picture with the lyrics and make it rhyme at the same time. SO I decided to just talk about the scenes and forget about the rhyming part. It was fun to forget about that challenge and just let go. Babies are enlightened humans and this song is my homage to them and their happy sparkle quality! Thanks Justin! That proved to be way too abstract as it turns out so I changed it to be about one person named Susan and all the different moods and feeling that one person can have. I chose the name Susan just because it sounded good after the word moody in the title. It is ok to feel all kinds of thing and you don't always have to feel happy. I was inspired by the amazing Big Block Sing Song series to make this song. Check them out.I decided to just make it about the snake and just the snake. I love how it bounces along and has that groovy weird breakdown. I like to do a tiny snake like dance to this one and I encourage you to do the same. While I had a good supply of rhymes in the "ish" department it was too morbid for my taste. So I changed it to be about a jellyfish that wishes to do all sorts of things on dry land but can't because he has no bones. This is one of two little miniature rock operas on this album. Can you name the other one? Of course my mind immediately wandered to snails and then to my recent effort to slow down and do a bit less in life so that I have time to just BE and observe the world unfold. So after a bunch of false starts and lyric revisions this little tale of a slow snail and a speedy spider being unlikely friends was born. Don't be afraid to take time to do nothing everyone. And it's ok to be busy too! Which one are you mostly? This is a case of me writing a song that sounds like an old song from long ago that I am updating but it is an original new tune. I love the idea that a chicken will want to peck at my cornbread so badly that it will learn how to fly and time travel in order to get a bit for itself. That chicken is very persistent. I added the "why did you eat my cornbread chicken chicken" part way after recording the song. We were in Hawaii way back in and a bird came into our hotel room and Kate and I named him Goober and I wrote a song about him. The problem was that I ripped off The Who's song Tommy without realizing it. Good old "Weird" Al Yankovic alerted me to the blunder when I sent him some rough mixes to check out and so I rewrote the whole song with a new melody and a story about wanting to keep the bird but the bird saying "NO! All of that took 6 years so you better enjoy it! This is the other little rock opera on the album. I snuck a little bit of an homage to Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen in there in the middle too. It was about how food changes after you eat it into POOP! But in the end HA! Get it? Plus I think it is fun to imaging talking to clouds. They go through a lot of changes. They know stuff. They are patient and adaptable which are good attributes. I loved rhyming "bottom" with "autumn". That was my nod to the original lyrics. One time when we were there and poking around on the beach this song just came drifting into my brain. I rushed back to the tent and wrote it on a wee ukulele and a scrap of paper. It sounds like a fun challenge to try to dig fast enough to keep up with those little clams. I played it that night at an open mic at the restaurant there but it took 4 years to finish writing it and get it recorded. I am slower than those fast little clams. It was beautifully done and they sound great. At one point they meet an old man living in a shack in the forest and they hang out with him for a bit. He seemed pretty prickly and like he wanted to be alone way out there but he let them spend time with him anyway. Somehow the music they were playing and the idea of being isolated gave rise to this idea of being unhuggable and things that are prickly in nature. Justin from The Okee Dokee Brothers played banjo on this track and Joe sang harmonies on the choruses. Thanks for the inspiration guys! Minutes before I read that I telling Kate about the fact that I had not written any songs about trains before. She chirped "you should write a song about a turtle train! The song came out of slowing down for a leisurely breakfast in town and turned out the song is about slowing down in life. I think I am more of a sleepy snail than a speedy spider. Jen improvised over it with new lyrics about being sleepy and a new melody and the song was born! It was rough and short though and needed to be recorded for real. That task only took 15 years to complete and now it can finally see the light of day.

How to accept discipline and more besides So taking a puppy any earlier is wrong and detrimental to their development. We follow many of the guidelines set forth by a program called Puppy Culture. Know that once you have your puppy, everything you do, everything they see, every good experience, bad experience, taste, smell, sight, reward and punishment trains them in some way. All of these experiences are granted to them by you and they will be looking to you for guidance through these experiences. Puppies are exactly like children. They take their cues from you to learn where they can go, where they should not, what they should be scared of, what they should not, what they can play with, what they can not…and on and on. You may as well take advantage of this innocence, when they have no idea of what life is with no preconceived ideas, no habits formed or needing to be broken, to start training them to fit into the life that they will lead with the skills that they will need. I believe you should start to train your Labrador puppy as soon as you get them home, from 8 weeks of age. But I stress this important point, to make it fun! You have to think of a puppy as a very young child. A puppy is just as impulsive, has just as little self-control and just as short an attention span. You need to think the same with a puppy. They are just like a child. A puppy will eat what they like, when they like. Go where they can, when they can. And they will not be able to listen to and act on your every word. They will have a very short attention span and no self-control. It would be totally unfair. While watching TV train your puppy during the commercial breaks. Commercial breaks are usually about minutes long perfect time for training your pup! This means going very slowly and not expecting too much. Having many small wins is very encouraging. Just do very gentle training exercises for short periods of time. Most people with a Labrador as a family pet will think of training as obedience commands and performing tricks. But you can train them basic things such as: Sit Stay for mere seconds…with no distractions! Keep it easy! Roll over. Commencing Marker Training your chocolate labrador pup Start Marker Training at 8 weeks of age When you take your 8 week old labrador pup to their new home, you should commence their obedience training immediately. Just repetitively say yes and give your pup a treat immediately. Then familiarise your labrador pup with a leash. Clip the leash to their collar and allow the pup to roam a little. This way they will adjust to its weight and the sensation around their neck. If you try to walk your pup straight away, they will simply resist. Don't pull and command, but rather cultivate a positive experience with a leash. Secondly, I recommend that you feed your new labrador pup with a leash attached until they learn to sit. This will establish you as the master and immediately teach the pup restraint. Do not give the food bowl to your dog without firstly bringing him under your control. Even with my mature dogs, I will not let them feed except on command. Feeding should never be random. Hold the leash close to the labrador pup's neck and push their rear end down to the seated position. When they are sitting, enthusiastically praise your pup and, only then, reward their obedience with food. Remember, food should always represent a reward for good behaviour. They hear tones and frequencies. When we train them, we are conditioning them to associate a particular sound with a response so that it means something to them. Labrador puppies like all dogs learn contextually and by consistent repetition. In this way, a labrador pup learns to associate sounds with responses and rewards. This is why you should reward your pup immediately when they have performed a command correctly, even if they did not intend to do so. In the early stages, I prefer to teach a dog to 'sit,' then move on to 'staying' before teaching them to 'come'. This is especially so while they are still a puppy. Remember that a 12 month old dog is still a pup. They are regularly hyperactive and overstimulated. The goal is to get your labrador puppy into a calm and submissive state as often as you can. Ensure you are demonstrating a calm and composed, yet assertive demeanor. When you are in charge, your labrador pup will willingly sit and look to you for direction. Exercise patience and be repetitive but don't overdo it. Remember that the time you put in now will help you bond with your young dog, even if they do not appear to be advancing quickly. It will be a very worthwhile investment in a long term relationship for years to come. Of these three basic commands, the 'stay' command will take more time to teach. When this is mastered and entrenched in your dog's obedience, it can save your dog from danger. You are teaching them associations, not English words. Sit Teaching your new labrador pup to sit should begin immediately when you take it home. Begin by feeding them on a leash. Hold the leash close to the pup's neck. Give the pup the 'sit' command, but don't reward them with food until they are sitting. In this way you have begun to condition the pup to the 'sit' command. This requires patience at meal time. Remember that a labrador pup requires 4 feeds a day for the first phase of their life. This gives you ample opportunity for repetition and reward. When the dog sits, reward them with a treat and a lot of enthusiastic praise. Each time they repeat the behaviour, reward them with a treat again. You can train your labrador pup for short intervals at any time. Carry a few small pieces of food. Call your pup, then reward them with lots of affirmation and a piece of food when they comply. Teach them to sit by offering a small treat. Say 'sit', then let them smell the food as you move your hand over their head. A labrador pup will automatically lift the nose in the air to follow the food. As the head moves up and back, the pup will tend to sit. Give lots of praise and gradually increase repetition as they associate the word 'sit' with the food. Stay Your Labrador pup will need to understand the 'sit' command before you advance to 'stay'. Before you give the 'stay' command, make sure that the dog is seated. To keep the dog in the sitting position, you will use your hand with the fingers pointing up and the palm in front of their face. To begin with, position yourself about half a metre away from your pup's face. Direct the 'stay' command calmly, with your hand up. Slowly take half a step back and remain there for 3 seconds to begin with. Then step back towards to the dog. Wait for another 3 sec and then reward your dog with a treat. Repeat this 5 times. Reward them at the end of each 'stay' routine by praising them enthusiastically and giving them a treat. Don't praise or reward the dog until they have remained seated in front of you for a minimum of 3 seconds when you return. Your puppy should not move a millimetre until you give the reward. If your dog breaks early, you have gone too far. Simply return to your dog, reset them in the seated position and begin the routine again. Come It is important to make sure your Labrador understands the 'stay' command before you begin the recall or 'come' command. Make sure you pup is seated before you give the 'come' command. As your walk away from your pup, maintain eye contact. Don't back away too far too soon. If the pup breaks early, give the 'come' command to establish association. When you call your dog to 'come', do not let them jump up on you. If the dog wants to stand on its back legs and reach up, place the palm of your hand on their head and hold it away from you. I suggest that you don't say 'no! The down command should be used as a more constructive training command. If your pup jumps up, make your disapproval known by using a 'dog' sound; 'Ahhh! If you find yourself becoming frustrated, then put the pup away and start again tomorrow. Don't take it personally and don't blame the dog. Corrections are necessary, but not out of frustration or anger. If it's not working, then look at your consistency and your communication. If the training is a positive experience then you will strengthen the bonding and learning process. Develop consistent communication and trust with your dog in the process of the training. Labrador pups love to please and they will be very proud of themselves when they accomplish the command and gain your approval. Pawling Chocolate and Black Labradors. You should take your puppy outdoors and let him exercise his socialization potential at a young age. Visiting friends and family is one way to go about it. You can also spot a dog park and carry him there. Remember that your pet is still learning to follow directions and walk with you. You cannot expect him to cover long distances. The best way to avoid this is to take them far enough from the house and ensure they have a positive outside experience. It is worth noting that you should do this as often as you can, preferably daily. Start Potty Training It would be best to start potty training your Lab puppy the first day you bring him home. Start by showing your pup where you want him to potty, such as a sectioned-off area of your yard or garden. A good idea is to cordon off a small area and add some bark chippings. Next, you need a potty training schedule such as first thing in the morning, after mealtimes and play, and hourly for young pups. Many owners use dog crates to help with house training. I have a step-by-step guide on Labrador puppy crate training where you can learn tons more. Discourage Biting If you follow my blog, you know I am against punishment-oriented training. If you train your dog young enough to avoid harsh bites, you will not need punishment-driven discipline strategies. In any case, using physical force or yelling at your pup will only instill fear and distrust and can cause aggression in your dog. Instead, you can wait until your Labrador bites during a positive activity and then discontinue it. It will anchor the consequence better. Follow up using positive reinforcement by rewarding the correct behavior with a treat. Your Labrador will quickly learn that displaying good behavior reaps nice things. Puppies need to learn their bite inhibition soft-mouth by continuing the excellent work their mother and siblings taught them. Learn Bite Inhibition Training! Instill Patience You must use your best judgment when training your dog to be patient. Generally speaking, your Labrador will be mature enough to learn self-control by the tenth week. You can use a clicker or a whistle to teach your puppy to assume the natural heel position. Chances are, at first, your Labrador will try to change his pace to be behind you because of the force of habit. Walking in areas familiar to your dog will eliminate this problem. While you previously trained him to assume a heel position, you can also teach him these techniques. You may notice that your puppy can tell your words apart by the thirteenth week. So by the time he is four months old, you can use the position cues and positive reinforcement to get your dog to follow. These included whistling, clapping, or saying a specific word to indicate that your Labrador is doing a good job, typically followed by a well-deserved treat. Now is the time to see whether the anchors work! Where you previously whistled when your Lab ran towards you, now you must whistle, so he begins his run. This is the start of his Labrador recall training. Teaching good recall is an ongoing process. My dog was around 12 months old before seeing a noticeable improvement in her recall. Please avoid forcing the dog, as that only introduces confusion. Build Comfort With Crowds — Work on Socialization You have trained your Labrador to acknowledge close friends and family in the past few weeks. While this enables the puppy to be more social when you have visitors, a grown dog must learn to walk outdoors without acting out. This transition must be gradual, and try to keep experiences positive. Whether it is a cuddle, a pat, attention, or something tasty, you must teach your pup target training , for example, to touch a target with a specific part of his body. Remember that your Lab may end up biting or clawing to communicate if you do not teach him more acceptable communication methods. Here, I recommend teaching your Labrador to touch your hand with his nose. Ultimately, this is an excellent replacement for bites! Hand targeting is fun to teach, helps your pup build trust, and gets him using his brain! You have laid a strong foundation of discipline and positive reinforcement, making it easier to train your dog to follow more complex commands. In these weeks, you will introduce him to assuming different positions, obeying your commands as he moves away from you, and reacting to more nuanced anchors. Remember, 4-month-old Labrador puppies have a short attention span, so avoid long training sessions. Teach the Sit and Stay Teaching your Lab to sit and stay is a useful command for him to learn. Train Your Dog to Fetch If you have taken your Labrador to public parks and he has seen other dogs play fetch, it will be easier to teach him to retrieve whatever you throw. Your Labrador may not bring the toy back to you for a second round, but he will soon get the idea of retrieving it. You can gradually turn it into a game of fetch over the next few weeks and reward your doggo with high-value training treats. Continue Potty Training In the fourth month of Labrador training, you will continue potty training with a degree of independence. Continue with a good schedule and sync your walks with his natural cycle to align with the times he needs to go. You can use it to control your Labrador and later to test his ability to execute a command off-leash. A harness is also a good idea and is used for outdoor training and walks. How to Train a 5-Month-Old Lab Puppy A five-month-old Labrador puppy is ready to be tested for his general obedience and the ability to deal with distractions, whether other dogs, people, or other animals such as squirrels or birds. Earlier, I mentioned that you could not expect an eight-week-old puppy to delay gratification. Your puppy can deal with distractions at five months old if you introduce them slowly. You must be prepared for your dog to run ahead of you now! However, suppose you have developed a solid relationship with your pup and worked on his training. In that case, he will stay within a reasonable distance, remaining by your side and showing loyalty. Once your Lab puppy has reached his 6-month milestone, it also marks the point where you introduce him to advanced obedience training. The good news is that all the training you have previously given will make it easier for your dog to follow your lead. Conclude Potty Training Your dog has had months to learn how to communicate his need to go potty. He has also likely refined the patience to hold it instead of relieving himself on the floor. Therefore, you can communicate your disappointment with your body language if your dog makes a mess. Avoid physical punishment and even verbal chastising as it impacts your dog negatively. All dogs can still have the odd accident up to 12 months old. Moreover, you must be prepared for your dog to relieve himself indoors if he is excited or frightened, known as either excitement or submissive urination. Increase Exercise Now that your Lab puppy is six months old, you can increase his exercise to thirty minutes twice daily. Energy levels, especially for larger breed dogs, escalate during this time. While the average exercise for a pup before this is generally five minutes of exercise per month of age, twice a day, a six-month-old Labrador can be out for one hour if you split his walks into thirty minutes a day. To train your 6-month-old Lab puppy, start with two commands with the most practical use. From six months onwards, until your Labrador is a well-trained adult, you can teach the following commands or tricks in any order. How to Train a 7-Month-Old Labrador As your Lab progresses to seven months old, a lot of the previous training needs to be kept consistent as you gradually teach him to comprehend more commands. Maybe there is a trespasser, and you want your dog to scare them away. You will need to continue training your dog to hold things or release them on command, but you can also proceed to add distance and even more background distractions. Ironically, you need to teach him to bark on command before learning to be silent on cue. Over this month, he will learn to associate the respective commands with barking and silence. This is quite tricky, but your Lab will eventually get there if you practice and stay consistent. The eighth month is ideal for training your Lab to go to different places upon hearing the command word. Either way, do not overload him with place commands, and stick to no more than two per month. Or you can use the ninth month to teach a cool party trick! After a week, you can remove the treat and teach your Lab to follow your finger. Of course, you will still need to reward him after he follows the command. By the third week, you can cue your doggo to spin and see if he does so without your finger guiding him in a circular motion. It might take an extra week or two, but I recommend this as an addition in the ninth month because it allows you to continue training your pet to learn previous commands better. You can teach him to go to different places, hold or release objects, and fetch toys. You can now progress this further and teach him to roll over on command. Your 1-year-old Labrador only learns to comprehend more at the same pace as he has since the 6-month mark. You should also audit previously taught commands and see any weak associations you can reinforce. How to Train an Month-Old Labrador You will not have to alter your training regimen dramatically if you have trained your Labrador properly from eight weeks onward. If anything, this is the period where you customize his training to your convenience. Now is when your dog must learn to be compatible with your life. From the month mark onwards, you must train your dog to be harmonious with modern adult life within reason. It is sad to see dog owners having to give away their pets because of behavior issues. Such things are avoidable if you train your dog correctly and sufficiently exercise him. It would be best if you simply established authority by having a positive yet commanding presence. Once your dog acknowledges your authority and sees you as a guide, you can merely treat him as a six-month-old, albeit on an accelerated schedule, and train him accordingly. Your job becomes even easier once you have a workable training schedule and stick to your routine. How Puppies Learn In the natural canine world, mother dogs teach their pups everything they need to know about their world, survival and living together happily in various stages of development. Most professional trainers try to mimic the natural canine learning process in their puppy training phases. In fact, we only recommend positive training techniques. Rewards can include food, special treats, praise and petting, playing with a favorite toy, etc. Basic Training Concepts Every Puppy Should Learn The first two components of your puppy training should be thorough socialization and potty training. Here are a few tips with each of those early behaviors. Socialization actually refers to exposure to a wide range of situations and individuals. This goes for being around lots of different people, including children. While your pup is still impressionable and inquisitive, introduce her to friends, neighbors and strangers. Introduce her to children with careful instructions to stay quiet, move slowly and pet gently. They could end up grabbing her tightly, and scaring or hurting her. Being handled by other people will be very key in socializing your puppy. Your dog should be properly socialized to gentle and careful handling, teeth brushing, touching ears and paws and tail. This will make trips to the vet and groomer easier. Make sure to also check out our guide to taking puppies outside for more help with socialization. Crate Training for Dogs Crate training is the process of teaching your dog to love spending time secure in their cosy den. Some puppies basically crate train themselves, loving their crate from day one. Others need a more gradual introduction to this safe space. The trick is to not turn crating into a punishment , but instead make it a wonderful place to have a short undisturbed rest. Most puppies will go through a play biting phase, so if you need help training your lab not to nip, you can follow this guide. It will be important for your dog to sit quietly in the field or duck stand. Self-control should be incorporated throughout daily routines and all training phases. Finally, learning how to walk politely on a leash in public is important. In addition to the behaviors listed above, there are a few extra considerations for training a gundog. As early as 8 weeks old, professional gundog trainers begin introducing lab puppies to various scenarios. The core behavioral requirements for a gundog that can be started in puppies this young are: Thorough socialization and desensitization to various environments and sounds. Be sure to start with quieter sounds and build to louder sounds, especially when introducing the sound of gunfire, to avoid creating a frantic dog. Calmness and steadiness amidst distraction. The earliest introduction to this is teaching your pup to sit for his meals, which can be captured as early as six weeks. There are, however, two important considerations to your Lab puppy training. Before their leg bones are fully developed, Labs can develop joint issues if they run too hard and long. Second, resist the urge to play fetch and retrieve every day with your Lab puppy. They overdo it with tossing a ball or dummy to try to encourage the pup to retrieve. The retrieving instinct typically kicks in quite strong around puberty between five to 10 months. Instead, we suggest focusing on sit, stay and waiting quietly with self control. Those are the more difficult behaviors for a lab to learn once adolescent hormones kick in. Start with socialization and household manners as early as 8 weeks old. Then move to sit, stay, steadiness training, and walking on a leash between 12 and 18 weeks. Training is an ongoing life skill, rather than something you do once and consider done. For a hunting Lab, adding various distractions and practicing perfect recall in different environments will be the two biggest training techniques to work on throughout life. Enjoy your training! If you are following my training of Bubba, you know that training a 3—4-month-old puppy is a big challenge. By the time your puppy reaches the 5-month age, they have generally started to mature some, not a lot and are usually a bit more receptive to training. Here is the training you can work on with your 5-month-old Lab puppy. Regarding this series of posts This is post nine of a step-by-step training and socialization program for Labrador puppies. If you read our first post , you know that this series follows our training of Bubba, a female chocolate lab puppy. Bubba is already sold as one of our Custom Trained Retrievers, so it is our responsibility to raise and train her until she has progressed to the level of training the owner has requested. In this case, Bubba will be with us for almost a year and a half. Bubba Bubba has turned the corner from puppy to adolescent. She now understands the training schedule and looks forward to being trained twice a day. I know this because when Bubba comes out of the dog trailer, she is watching me and bouncing in anticipation of being trained. She has learned that if she does her obedience work, she gets to retrieve. So, she is willing to do the work to get the reward. This simple shift has made working with Bubba so much more enjoyable. Now is when I get to really see her start to improve, and I find that so rewarding. Training and socialization for five-month-old Labrador puppy Here are the things we have been working on and will continue to work on with Bubba in month five. Increased self-control and restraint This goes hand-in-hand with obedience. I must continue to increase my expectations of Bubba and put her in more and more situations where she must make the decision to obey. At this age, I can see the conflict going on in her mind. I call her with a HERE command, but she wants to run after the cat. She looks at me, so I know she heard me and then she looks at the cat. At this point, she will more often than not choose to obey the HERE command and come to me. This is huge. It shows some maturity and an increase in knowledge and understanding of right and wrong behavior. Dog trainers live for times like these. It means the dog is growing and learning and making good choices. This drill is very simple. Why is this important? Well, most people have problems with their dog coming to them consistently. The reason is most often because each time the dog comes the dog gets put away in the house, or in a crate. Or they get something taken away from them like a toy or a stick. It allows your dog to learn that coming to you is a good thing and not a bad thing. Obedience training your 5-month-old puppy We continue to work on obedience daily with Bubba and will for at least the next months. After that, we will still do obedience training at least twice a week. You are never done obedience training. Your dog may get very good at obedience work, but if you do not work on it for a few weeks or longer, it will start to deteriorate. For now, we simply use a chain collar and heeling stick, but not too far down the line we will start collar conditioning her for corrections by the electronic collar. In fact, technically, we are already collar conditioning Bubba since each time we take her out to train we put an e-collar on her. It is a small puppy sized collar and it is not turned on, but she wears it each time she gets trained. So, when I pull out the e-collar, Bubba gets very excited because she knows she is going to get trained. This is the response we are looking for. Some dogs get very excited when the owner grabs the leash, because they know that they are going for a walk. This is the same reaction we are looking for from putting on an electronic collar. The dog should not act differently when the e-collar is on. If your dog cowers or fights you when you want to put the e-collar on, then you have introduced the collar incorrectly and your dog now thinks that the e-collar is a bad thing. This means that your dog is collar wise and will act completely different when the e-collar is on. This is a huge problem because it is very likely your dog will be obedient when the collar is on and disobedient when the collar is off. That is not what we want to achieve. We want your dog to be obedient with or without the e-collar on. Micro-obedience sessions At this young age, we often do what I call micro-obedience sessions. These are obedience training sessions, but they are only around minutes long. These are very effective for puppies because they have a very short attention span. You just must pick one obedience command to focus on for each micro-session, preferably only one drill. It is better to do micro-sessions a day than to try and pack too much into each session. She is not perfect, she is still a puppy and therefore makes a lot of mistakes, but she understands the HEEL command and I can walk in squares or a figure 8 and she is following my legs for the turns. I will continue to work on longer and longer walks with Bubba at heel throughout the month. Learn more about How to obedience train a Labrador puppy. Bubba is a chocolate Lab, and as I have said in the past, chocolates tend to mature slower than black or yellow Labs. Because of this, Bubba really struggled with a remote SIT for a long time. She could not seem to stop her little butt from moving! However, we have made progress and she is now sitting still, and I can walk away from her to a distance of around six feet while she remains seated. Again, she makes mistakes. She is a puppy, and we must give her some grace, but we still correct the mistakes and continue to work on improvement. The distance can be anywhere from 3 feet to 6 feet. Later, this will be very important since this is the position to which I expect all my dogs to deliver the birds. She will end facing the same direction I am facing, sitting next to me. This is a vital drill that we do with every dog that goes through one of our programs. It teaches the dog to deliver the bird to a HEEL position. By starting this with Bubba at this young age, she will learn quickly what the HEEL position is and soon I will be able to say HEEL and put my left hand out from my side slightly and she will come into that position. I did use treats for a short time, which again, I am not a fan of for many reasons. HERE is a vital command and so we will work on it daily. And for those of you who are wondering, yes, manually does mean chasing her puppy butt down, putting on a lead and pulling her towards me with the HERE command all the way back to where I was when I issued the command. It is so important that you never, and I mean NEVER, give a dog a command that you are not willing to enforce in one way or another. For your dog to learn that commands are meant to be obeyed, they must understand that any refusal of the command will be backed up with a correction. The correction may only be a sharp NO, or it may be more serious like a lead correction. Retrieving with your 5-month-old Lab puppy In my last post, I talked about how important it is for you to NOT retrieve with a teething-puppy. Bubba has most of her adult teeth in already, we are just waiting on a few, but she is showing us she is more than ready to retrieve again. So, we have begun hand thrown marks again and she is going out like gangbusters and delivering the bumpers right to my hand. If I notice any problems with her carrying the bumpers or if she starts dropping them a lot, I will stop again until the teeth are more solid. If Bubba seems to be in pain at all during retrieving, we will stop immediately. We never want her to associate retrieving with pain. Bubba already understands the retrieving game when it comes to assistant thrown marks too. She sits with me or Steve at the line and faces the gunners throwers in the field. She sits tall and proud; she knows what the gunners are out there for, and she is ready to do the work. It is so fun to watch these puppies figure out the game and what their job is. It is time to start a new retrieving drill with Bubba. The drill is designed to get a dog to mark throws that are further and further away. It gets them to run out a longer distance to a mark and not even notice the change in distance. It is done by starting with a 20—yard mark, generally on shorter grass where the bumper can be seen on the ground. Have the thrower throw the bumper and send the dog using their name. After the dog picks up the bumper and is running back to you, take a few large steps backward. Take delivery of the bumper and line your dog up for another mark. The mark will be in the same place, but that location is now several yards deeper since you have backed up. Have the thrower throw another bumper and again send your dog. After the dog picks up the bumper and is running back to you, again back up several yards. Repeat until your dog is retrieving at longer distances. This drill works well for dogs that have a very strong retrieving desire. For dogs with less desire, you will need to move much slower, only doing marks total in a session. Remember, you never want to burn out your dog with retrieves. Always leave them wanting more! Final thoughts on training for your 5-month-old Labrador puppy If you have been following these posts, you are getting very close to moving your dog into hunting training. And yet, many new owners get so caught up in the cuteness of these bundles of fur that they disregard any training until the dog is much older. Sometimes new owners are just overwhelmed with taking care of their new puppy. Others lack the information needed to make good decisions regarding training for their new family member. Unfortunately, though, some bad behaviors or missed socialization and exposure opportunities are difficult to address with an older dog. So, if your goal is for you new retriever to eventually grow into an excellent duck dog, here is a guide to raising your Lab puppy to be a duck or gun dog. Picking up the puppy The journey with your new retriever pup starts the day you pick him or her up from the breeder. Hopefully you have done your homework and selected a litter of puppies with parents who have proven trainability. If you have a pick from the litter, you will want to take some time to observe the puppies. Even so, most trainers will tell you that picking a puppy is a complete crapshoot, meaning there really is no way to know how good the dog will be while looking at them as a puppy. Genetics and a proven pedigree are the best way to stack the odds in your favor from the start. Beyond that, if you have a good breeder, they are the next best source for information regarding the pups. A good breeder will give you a recommendation based on what you plan to use the pup for and your family situation. Check out this post on searching for a great retriever puppy and what to look for in breeders. If possible, bring someone with you to pick up the puppy. While you can put a puppy in a crate to transport them home, leaving the litter is a traumatic time for most puppies. Being held on the way home is a good way to start bonding with the puppy. All opinions and recommendations are my own. The first week raising your Labrador Retriever puppy There is very little training needed the first week you have your puppy home. Use this time to hold, pet and play with your new puppy. Bonding with the puppy is important and this is a good time to do that. You will likely be exhausted this week from getting up multiple times each night to let your puppy outside. Learn more in What should I do the first week with my new Lab puppy? Socialization is key for retriever gun dog puppies While socialization is important for all dogs, it is essential for retriever puppies destined to hunt. Socialization is the act of putting your retriever puppy in new situations and allowing the puppy to figure it out. Your puppy may handle new situations well, or she might show timid or frightened behaviors. This is not the time to coddle your future gun dog. Dogs are very aware of their owners and if you act or acknowledge your puppies fear, they will likely think you are scared too. This is the opposite of what we are trying to achieve with socialization. We want puppies to learn to adjust quickly to new situations. We want them to learn how to figure out new conditions and handle them without fear or hesitation. Puppies need to be socialized to people also. Let your puppy interact with people of all ages, including children. In addition, it can be helpful if they are also socialized to other dogs and cats. And yet we see too many retrievers with little to no retrieving desire. Sometimes this is just the result of bad breeding, but it can also be the result of poor introduction to retrieving or using the wrong items for retrieving. Many people like to play fetch with their puppy using a ball or Frisbee. But if your puppy is destined to be a hunting partner, this is going to make some retrieving problems down the line. We may use a ball to encourage a very young week old puppy to retrieve, IF, and only IF, the puppy is struggling with retrieving desire. Otherwise, we strongly discourage ongoing use of these items. Gun dogs and duck dogs are working dogs and they need to retrieve birds that fall to the ground. The rolling action of the ball or frisbee will create an excitement and energy that will make retrieving birds seem boring. We have found that dogs that have only retrieved balls or Frisbee often struggle when they need to retrieve a bumper or bird. Expose your Labrador puppy to common hunting elements A retriever that is going to be expected to hunt, should be introduced to hunting equipment and elements at an early age. Hills and mounds, flat areas and shallow divots are terrain that a hunting retriever should learn to traverse with ease. In addition to land, different water is also an important factor. Lakes are good, but you should also try to expose your puppy to dirty water. Water with lily pads, cat tails and algae are all things a duck dog will need to handle to work. Hunting equipment Labrador retriever puppies need to learn all about the equipment you use when hunting. Doing this when they are young and continuing the exposure as they grow, will make this second nature to them. Boats and blinds If you hunt out of a boat or blind, introduce your puppy to it. For boats, start on land. Get your puppy comfortable getting in and out of the boat. Throw retrieves from the boat. Similarly, introduce your dog to the blind as a good thing. If you are using a dog blind or hut, make sure your spend lots of time getting your pup comfortable going into and out of it. Make it a fun place to go to get retrieves. Duck or goose decoys If you will use decoys when hunting, take time to expose your puppy to them. Many times over the next few months, put some out on your lawn and let your puppy learn what they are. Eventually, move them to water and again allow your pup to explore them. Throw retrieves through them and teach the dog that he can ignore the decoys. Guns This is one of the most important things that you need to exposure your new puppy to. And it really needs to be done right. The last thing you want to do is create a gun-shy dog. That is very difficult to fix and the dog may never be able to hunt if the damage is too deep. Basic obedience for your gun dog puppy Your puppy is ready to learn obedience early on, and you will find that if you start when they are only a couple months old, they will learn quicker and be more obedient as they age. This will make a huge difference as they get older. Teaching HERE to young pups will require a long lead. Squat down a few feet from your puppy and say HERE as you gently pull them to you. Praise is essential with young pups, but the praise should be given when the puppy does something right. For instance, you say SIT and push his bottom down. You can use treats to teach your puppy obedience and reward him or her for obeying commands. But treats should only be used for very young puppies under 4 months. Many Labs will soon learn to only obey when given a treat, that is not the lesson you want your dog to learn. It can be difficult to discipline a cute little puppy, but it is essential. The pups are causing friction in the family relationships. Small issues often become much larger issues if they remain uncorrected. If you see your puppy doing something wrong, you need to take action to let him know that the behavior is not acceptable. Even if you plan to send your retriever puppy to a professional trainer in the future, you still want to take the time to socialize, expose, teach and discipline your dog now. Each week your puppy is growing and learning, and those first five months are the perfect time to get him or her off on the right foot. The socialization, exposure, and obedience are all steppingstones they need to advance in their role as a hunting partner. Do not skimp or disregard this time.
