Because of their herding instincts, we do not recommend them for those small children, though. American Eskimo American Eskimo dogs are medium to small dogs. They can stand anywhere from 19 to 9 inches tall. Those on the smaller size may absolutely work for families looking for smaller dogs. This breed is extremely active. They are also quite intelligent, which means that they require a lot of mental stimulation. Both of these traits combine to make this dog pretty high-maintenance. However, they are also fun companions and relatively easy to train. We recommend this breed primarily for those with previous dog experience. They require significant amounts of mental and physical stimulation, which can be difficult for new dog owners to provide. Keeshond The Keeshond is a very affectionate, social dog. They are a bit larger at 17 to 18 inches. However, their extremely fluffy coats won them a spot on this list. These dogs are very people-oriented and love their families. They also love to bark, which can be a problem for those in apartments. Their fluffy coat does require a decent amount of grooming. It constantly sheds, which can be a problem given how fluffy it is. We highly recommend this dog for active households with children. They are very good with kids and can be wonderful family pets. Finnish Lapphund As their name suggests, these dogs come from Lapland in Finland. They were originally working dogs, where they were used to herd reindeer. Because of their working background, these dogs need significant amounts of exercise every day. They are very energetic and require plenty of exercises. They are also quite people-oriented and may bark insistently if they are left alone for long periods. They need to be crate-trained at an early age so that they are used to being alone. Chow Chow The Chow Chow is a teddy bear of a dog. They are extremely fluffy, but they are also quite bulky. They can get rather large, but some of them are pretty small comparatively. They basically look like giant fluff balls, which is exactly why they ended up on this list. This dog is known for its bluish-black tongue, which is pretty rare in the dog world. While these dogs may look fluffy and adorable, they are quite protective and suspicious of strangers. They need plenty of training and socialization to get along with other dogs. We only recommend these dogs for experienced owners who have plenty of time to train and socialize them. As a result, small breeds like Mini Aussies are being bred to be even smaller, creating variations such as the Toy Aussie and the even smaller Teacup Aussie. Whilst neither are recognized breeds in their own right; they do have distinct size differences to standard and Miniature Aussies. Toys Aussies were created by breeding Miniature Aussies together and crossbreeding Minis with other, small and fluffy dog breeds. However, the fashionability of tiny dogs has lead to breeders using bad breeding tactics to create smaller and smaller dogs. This often happens with so-called Teacup dogs and includes breeding runts, inbreeding, and malnourishment. Whilst Toy Aussies are not as small as Teacup Aussies, they are not exempt from bad breeding either. Border Collies Border Collies are some of the smartest dogs out there. They are also relatively small in some cases, with the smallest dogs being about 27 pounds. These dogs are extremely trainable and are known for quickly picking up on commands. However, this high intelligence also means that they can be quite a bit of work. This can be in the form of training or puzzle toys. Otherwise, they can become destructive and difficult to handle. They are extremely active as well, requiring substantial amounts of exercise each day. In general, these dogs are not best for those without much time on their hands. Biewer Terrier The Biewer Terrier is a rarer dog breed. However, it is absolutely a small and fluffy dog. These dogs are often tri-colored but a bit fluffier than a Yorkie. They were just accepted into the AKC in , making them relatively newer as far as dog breeds go. They originally did come from the Yorkshire Terrier , but they now have enough genetic differences to be their own breed. It is very difficult to find these dogs for adoption due to their rarity. However, they can make good family dogs if you do happen to find them. Bolognese With their fluffy coat and round eyes, these dogs are extremely cute. These dogs were designed as companion animals. Therefore, they are quite cuddly and affectionate. They can suffer from some separation anxiety problems if they are not taught how to be alone at a young age. However, they are perfect for those looking for a lapdog. They are also less active, which makes them a good option for those living in apartments. If you just want a cute dog to sit in your lap, this dog likely fits the bill. Long-Haired Chihuahua Most of the time, Chihuahuas are considered to be nearly hairless. However, they can also have long hair. These colorful Chihuahuas can absolutely count as fluffy. With that said, their fur does not actually require that much grooming in the least. They can be great for those who want a small and fluffy dog, but not the excessive amounts of grooming that often come with them! Of course, these long-haired Chihuahuas act just like other Chihuahuas. It is essential that you socialize and train them appropriately. Otherwise, they can become aggressive and territorial. As small dogs, they are prone to fear-based aggression. It is also common for owners to carry their Chihuahuas around everywhere, which can lead to other behavioral problems. Chihuahuas that are never allowed to interact with the world on their own often end up with confidence issues, which can lead to aggression. Chinese Crested Chinese Crested are typically considered partially hairless. However, there is a haired version of this breed that is actually quite fluffy. They are often less sought after than hairless dogs, which makes them considerably less expensive. Chinese Crested are extremely attached to their people. As working dogs, they do require some exercise each day, but this is often not as extensive as it is for other breeds. Japanese Chin The Japanese Chin is an extremely tiny breed with longer fur. These dogs bond closely with their owners and are very loyal. However, this also makes them prone to separation anxiety. They also tend to be one-person dogs, so they may not be best for families with children. Their coat is long and fluffy as adults, but it takes quite a while to grow in. Of course, this does vary from puppy to puppy, though. Japanese Spitz The Japanese Spitz is the ultimate small and fluffy dog breed. They look like giant marshmallows. As intelligent and energetic dogs, they can make great pets for active families. They will happily play with the children in the yard and go on walks. These dogs are much more likely to run around and play than sit in your lap and cuddle. These coats do shed a lot. For this reason, you can expect to brush them quite a bit each day. Their dense undercoat needs to be raked out to remove excess fur and reduce shedding. With that said, even with daily combing, their fur tends to end up around the house. However, you can find them if you look hard enough and have a bit of patience. They are very people-oriented and love attention. They tend to be rather needy when it comes to the attention of their family. If they are not paid attention to enough, they can become rather destructive. Their long fluffy coat does require a bit of grooming as well. They are often kept trimmed, but they will often require daily brushing as well. Mi-Ki The Mi-Ki is a mixed breed that is becoming quite popular. They are produced by combining the Maltese, Papillon, and Japanese Chin. Due to this specific combination, they are often only produced by specialty breeders. These dogs are extremely affectionate and bred to be companion animals. Their coat does require some extensive grooming, though it can vary somewhat from dog to dog. As you might imagine, these highly intelligent dogs also require some extensive amount of socialization and training. Otherwise, they can become destructive and rather bored. Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka As the name suggests, this breed is from Russia. They are extremely rare in the United States. Most people who have them have directly imported them from Russia, as there are rarely active breeders in the United States. These dogs do not require extensive amounts of exercise and are often pretty easy to take care of. They are sociable and tend to get along well with pretty much anyone. Their high intelligence does mean that they need some mental stimulation each day. Their coats usually require some regular grooming. However, they are often not nearly as grooming intensive as some other small and fluffy dog breeds on this list. A quick brush every other day is often plenty. Tibetan Terrier The Tibetan Terrier is a bit larger than some of the other dogs on this list, but they can come in some small sizes. They often weigh somewhere between 18 to 30 pounds. These dogs are working animals, so they need regular exercise. They are sociable and often quite gentle as well. Many owners describe them as great with children. These dogs excel at dog sports, including agility and rally. While they are good family dogs, this breed is not as clingy as some others on this list. Their playful nature can make them great options for children. However, they are smaller in size, so they can be harmed by rougher kids. They come in many different sizes, depending on the size of the Poodle used — as well as what traits they randomly inherit from which parent breed. Toys are often between 6 to 12 pounds, putting them firmly in the small dog range. Their coat does vary a little bit since they can inherit any trait from either parent breed. However, it is generally longer and at least somewhat fluffy. The texture can range from wavy to straight. Most of the time, these dogs are not heavy shedders. They are intelligent, loyal, easy to train, and very affectionate. They make wonderful family dogs because they are great with young children and other dogs. Golden Retrievers are medium-sized sporting dogs that weigh on average pounds, with females weighing on the lower end of this range. Their height can range from inches tall. They have a broad head, short ears, deep chest, and very muscular build. Retrievers make excellent family dogs due to their wonderful temperament. They are friendly with children and other pets. They do not mind when company comes to visit. Golden Retrievers generally have a great temperament—they are often friendly with children, other pets, and even strangers. They enjoy being the center of attention. Golden Retrievers also love affection and being petted and will nudge you gently so that you continue to pet them. It is very rare for a Golden Retriever to show any sign of aggression. Goldens are very intelligent, which makes them easy to train as puppies. They can also be trained to be therapy dogs, guide dogs for people who are blind, or search-and-rescue dogs. She is believed to be a bloodhound shepherd mix possibly retriever. Sunny was pulled from a local shelter Christmas of after a hoarding abandonment case of 27 plus fearful feral dogs left behind in a property. The home was condemned, disgusting filthy. A home in such condition, no animal or human should have to live in. Sunny and 3 others call the sanctuary home for the time being, all are doing amazing with their rehab, learning what life as a loved pet should be. Sunny struggles to settle in and takes more time then the others. She is the one that stresses easily when meeting new people but with a playful active dog mentoring her she does so much better. She slowly warms up some when it comes to people, still unsure if she wants human affection at first but will always take a treat, moves in for petting, willing to snuggle and even cuddle. Sunny loves all the dogs, is good with cats and small critters too. Sunny has an amazing personality she herself is still learning about who she is. Always best to approach her slow at first. Sunny needs a lot of confidence still, and that requires a lot of patience with no set time frame and expectations ever. Allow her to live life 1 day at a time. Sunny walks amazing on leash, barks very little but barks. Understanding that continued training is a lifetime commitment, is very important. Out-of-state adopters are welcome at the adopter's expense.

Your vet can help you develop a care routine that will keep your dog healthy. Jack-A-Poos are at the top of the spectrum for energy and needing exercise. This is good news to combat their tendency for weight gain. They are versatile at either apartment or house lifestyles, due to their smaller size. They do enjoy time outside for mental and physical stimulation, and long walks and games agility, catch, etc. That smaller size could also make them vulnerable to wild predators. Their sense of adventure and wanderlust could send them off running into unfamiliar territory, as well. Brushing their teeth a few times a week is also a good idea to promote good dental health. You can ask your vet to show you how to do any of these tasks. Dividing the food into two or three meals during the day, as opposed to unlimited access, will help your dog not to overeat. You may need to take them outside to go to the bathroom before that, especially if they are very young or very old. Every dog is different with how quickly they need to go to the bathroom, but the more vigorous exercise should wait till after the safety period. Colors include white, black, brown, tan, gray, and blue—and coats can be a mix of these colors. Noses are always black, and eyes are always brown. Grooming is fairly low-maintenance, only necessitating brushing once a week and bathing as needed. Professional grooming every so often may help the dog look their best, too. In general, Jack-A-Poos are pretty tolerant to both heat and cold, but there are a few differences. Poodles do not have an undercoat, which means they tolerate heat more easily and cold less easily. Jack Russell Terriers do have an undercoat. Many small dogs do well with coats or sweaters when it is extra cold or snowy in the winter, so that may be helpful for your Jack-A-Poo, too. As with all dogs, Jack-A-Poos will do best if they have early socialization and training. This will emphasize the loving, loyal traits of your dog, and it can minimize the hunting ancestry. With early socialization, Jack-A-Poos can be great with children and other pets. However, without that early socialization, they may become aggressive. However, you may want to try Jack Russell Terrier or Poodle breed specific rescues, as they often care for mixes, as well. Here are some rescues you can try:. The Jack A Poo cross can make an excellent choice for dog enthusiasts looking for a cross breed that is small in size and will be happy in an apartment or small home. While Jack A Poos are a small hybrid dog, they require lots of mental and physical stimulation. For me this is a pro- I love that he can keep up on long hikes and enjoys a variety of dog sports such as canicross, scentwork, flyball, agility, tricks etx however some people would see this as a con not wanting such a high maintenance dog. Natasha shared that Jasper jackapoojasper is an extremely clever dog. Again, for me, I love this as I have been able to teach him all sorts of tricks and behaviours. He needs a lot of mental enrichment not just physical activity to stay happy. Some popular members of the Doodle family such as Goldendoodles, Labradoodles, Cavapoos and Cockapoos can cost a hefty price. This can be dependent on the breeder, the color of the coat, eye color or generation of Doodle. The Jack A Poo is one of the cheaper members of the Doodle family. While some Jack Russells may have a negative reaction to other dogs, there are plenty of JRTs who are well socialized. The same can be said of the Jack A Poo. Some members of the cross breed could have issues with dogs that they meet at the dog park or on their daily walk. Natasha revealed that Jasper jackapoojasper can be difficult around other dogs. The overly social ones, they love other dogs SO much but despite lots of sensible early socialisation from well meaning owners they can be a little rude. There is the other group which I see much more of, the reactive ones. They are prone to issues from BOTH breeds — not just one. This includes but is not limited to PRA, IVDD, luxating patella, cushings, addisons, Bon Willebrands, legg-calve-perthes disease, tracheal collapse, dental disease etc. Again, not all Jack Russell Terriers bark a lot but there are plenty that do. This trait can be inherited by a Jack A Poo. Are Jack A Poos easy to train? Yes and no. They are very intelligent and can learn many things from basics to quite advanced tricks and behaviours. However they are often not very food motivated and have an independent character so are not always the easiest to train. How long does a Jack A Poo live? On average but every dog is different no matter the breed. How big do Jack A Poos grow? This depends on the size of the parents really. Both Jack Russell Terriers and Poodles come in different sizes. Most adult Jack A Poo a seem to fit into two categories- those with a toy smallest Poodle parent end up on average kg as adults, those with a miniature medium Poodle parent seem to be kg as adults. Does a Jack A Poo bark a lot? Both breeds that make up the mix are naturally vocal dogs, particularly the Terrier side. Do Jack A Poos get on with cats? However some of this can be mitigated by early calm socialisation teaching the puppy to ignore the cat. How often do Jack A Poo need to be groomed? As a mixed breed, Jack A Poos coat types vary greatly so it really depends on this. Those with shorter or more wiry coats will need less grooming than those with longer or curlier coats. They will likely need daily brushing at a minimum, regular nail clipping and tooth brushing as they are prone to bad dental health. Some of the curlier or longer haired ones may need regular trimming or clipping, which you can learn to do yourself or pay a groomer to do for you. Knowing the parents can help you better understand what a Jackapoo is like. Miniature Poodles Toy Poodle Poodles come in three varieties: standard, miniature, and toy. As such, Poodles are fantastic sniffers. However, nowadays Miniature Poodles are bred for companionship and while they enjoy sniffing and working, they also enjoy the company of their owners. Poodles are extremely intelligent, active, and fast learners, and many Poodle owners attest to their intelligence by describing them as intuitive and easy to train. People used Jack Russells for hunting small games like rabbits, foxes, and birds. Like Poodles, the Jack Russell is also energetic and dislikes sitting still for too long. Due to their hunting instinct, they love to stay engaged and require plenty of mental enrichment throughout the week. However, putting in the time to give a Jack Russell menta stimulation and games is essential, otherwise they may become destructive think chewing your shoes or gnawing on your baseboards. Energetic Jackapoos are very active, which is a no-brainer considering the parent dogs are also highly energetic. If you plan to give your Jackapoo puppy a bunch of toys and expect them to be happy, the Jackapoo is not the right dog for you. Jackapoos need lots of attention and active participation from their owners. Jackapoos are ideal for active families who plan to take them on walks throughout the day. At least 60 minutes is ideal, along with training and mental stimulation. Social Jackpoodles are great family dogs. Intelligent As both Jack Russell Terriers and Mini Poodles are highly intelligent, the Jackapoo is one smart cookie The Jackapoo is quick on the uptake, easily learning new tricks and family routines, and even sniffing out friends and foes. Surprisingly, this small pooch makes a great guard dog. Their bold bark and unwavering confidence are sure to scare off any unwanted visitors. Stubborn Despite being intelligent and easy to train Jackapoos also have a stubborn streak, which means you need to have plenty of patience with them. With the right training, you can teach your Jackapoo to listen to your commands and—in most cases—listen to you. Loyal Jackapoo dogs are known for their unwavering loyalty to their owners. These loving pups form strong bonds with their human family members and will go to great lengths to protect them. They are highly affectionate and thrive on attention, and can be anxious when you leave. Jackapoos are also highly intuitive and can sense when their owners are feeling down or stressed, providing them with comfort and support. Dogs dig for a variety of reasons, but the biggest is for stress relief and boredom. You can easily correct this behavior by ensuring you provide plenty of mental and physical stimulation. Both Poodles and Jack Russell Terriers enjoy swimming, so if you want to mix things up, take your Jackapoo for a swim.
