Three to four times a day 4 — 5 months 6 months and above Two times a day Pregnant or breastfeeding French Bulldogs may eat up to three times a day within eight hours. Meanwhile, puppies require more frequent feedings than adult dogs due to their rapid metabolism. In general, a French Bulldog puppy should be fed three times daily between two and six months. Once the French Bulldog puppy reaches the age of six months, the feeding frequency can be reduced to two meals each day. As developing puppies, your Frenchie requires a consistent daily feeding plan. The feeding plan should incorporate at least three measured meals per day. Its dinner schedule is vital, as it allows ample time to digest the food and go pee or potty before bedtime. Between 14 and 18 weeks, you can begin accustoming your French Bulldog puppy to two meals each day. If your veterinarian advises you to keep your French Bulldog on a three-meals-a-day diet, this must be properly followed. Senior dogs can be fed on the same schedule when given three meals a day. Since elderly dogs do not move as much, they may develop too much weight. Consequently, you should ensure that the food contains fewer calories, more fiber, and an appropriate balance of fat and protein. Your veterinarian should have a recommended amount of treats you should give your dog. Again, it will vary according to its weight and level of activity. If you must frequently use treats for training, use tiny bits or give them a licking mat. Best Dog Foods for French Bulldog A feeding guide for Frenchie dog lovers would be incomplete without the information on the best dog food for their furry companion. There are numerous food options available for French Bulldogs. The best pet food varies from one Frenchie to another. Perhaps your French Bulldog is a fussy eater or suffers from food allergies. It is feasible to provide a balanced diet for your French Bulldogs if you use the best store-bought or homemade dog food that contains all the nutrition needed by your dog and as prescribed by your veterinarian. The list below shows the best dog food options you can provide your French Bulldog: Dry Food: Dry dog food is commercially available kibble. This can be an excellent alternative for French Bulldogs with sensitive stomachs. French Bulldog puppies require high-quality dry food that is high in animal protein to aid in growth and muscular development. Wet Food: Wet food is contained in a can; it is primarily composed of water and is considered highly mushy food. However, wet food expires more quickly than dry food, making it the least practical alternative. Home-Cooked Diet: A home-cooked, protein-rich diet like a chicken meal is excellent for French Bulldogs. Unlike ordinary kibble, it contains no additives or preservatives. It supports healthy digestion and may help avoid various problems related to a bad diet, including obesity, dry skin and coat, pancreatitis, diabetes, and a low immune system. French Bulldogs are prone to developing a variety of joint and back issues. Along with other joint problems, they may develop luxating patella or hip dysplasia. Both glucosamine and chondroitin are critical components of a high-quality French Bulldog dog diet. These essential vitamins assist your French in developing the connective tissue necessary for healthy joints and spine support. Omega-3 fatty acids can assist your Frenchie to keep muscle mass and strength by reducing inflammation and soreness. Also, this can promote healthy skin by preventing itchy and flaky skin. Whether wet and dry food, raw food, or a homemade diet, each dog food offers several benefits and drawbacks. Consult a veterinarian before deciding to know exactly what food option suits your Frenchie. Any French Bulldog owner will attest that vomiting is far more common in this breed than in other dogs. While it cannot be totally prevented, you should know what human foods are toxic to French Bulldogs. Some of the foods to avoid are not only bad for Frenchie; many of them can be fatal. They may result in poisoning and, in the worst-case scenario, death. This section enumerates some of the most dangerous foods for French Bulldogs. I will discuss why these foods are poisonous and when you should contact a veterinarian. The first and most prevalent is chocolate. It contains a toxin called theobromine , which can cause a variety of health problems when consumed in large amounts. This can cause irregular heartbeats, seizures, and sudden death. Garlic and onions should also never be included in the diet of your Frenchie puppy or adult dog. Even a trace of these vegetables can result in anemia and red blood cell failure in your pup. Poisoning symptoms include lethargy, fatigue, vomiting, rapid breathing, and an increased heart rate. However, remember that you may not immediately notice poisoning symptoms because the toxic consequences may take a few days to manifest. Additionally, grapes are one of the most toxic foods for your Frenchie. A dog that has consumed grapes may exhibit stomach bloating and diarrhea. They need to be taken to a veterinarian immediately. In severe cases, gastric lavage is the best course of action. Candy, artificial sweeteners, corn on the cob, roasted bones, avocado, raisins, almonds, cherry, peach, plum, coconut oil, mustard seeds, alcohol, coffee, blue cheese, and tomatoes are also regarded to be unsafe for French Bulldogs. Furthermore, there are certain foods that you should avoid giving your Pitbull owing to the negative side effects they may cause. While they are not considered dangerous, they can cause nausea, diarrhea, and weight gain. Numerous dogs wind up at veterinarian clinics due to improper food intake. While prevention is always the best course of action, it is critical to understand emergency care and medication expenses. Read our article on French Bulldog costs to learn more about the medical expenditures associated with a French Bulldog. These adjustments should ideally take place over 5 to 7 days. Consult a veterinarian in this scenario, especially if you intend to switch to a raw or homemade diet. Feeding an Overweight French Bulldog French Bulldogs can quickly gain weight, resulting in various health problems. Thus, dog owners need to notice when their Frenchie gets overweight to assist the dog in maintaining a healthy weight and living a healthy life. Average adult French Bulldogs should have a body weight between 19 and 29 pounds for males, while 18 to 28 pounds for females. The most common indications that your Frenchie is overweight include lack of muscle definition and difficulty breathing during brief exercises. In terms of visual indicators, a Frenchie within their healthy weight will have a thin layer of fat covering their ribs. Meanwhile, those with excess fat have noticeable deposits in the chest and stomach area. Also, you should be able to see and feel their spine as they bend and curl into a sleeping position. Furthermore, Frenchies have an hourglass form, with a visible waistline that is smaller than their chest when they are not overweight. Regardless of these symptoms, it is always advisable to seek confirmation from a professional veterinarian. Feeding an obese Frenchie means maintaining a consistent food plan throughout the day to aid in weight loss. Additionally, this stops your dog from eating more than it requires. Apart from planned feeding times, serving the correct meal proportions is essential. If your Frenchie is overweight, owners should focus on how much food is offered to them. Reducing their daily kibble intake by half a cup can help them significantly reduce weight. Moreover, you should offer them foods with fewer calories, more fiber, and more protein. As a result, your Frenchie will burn more calories and lose weight more quickly. It is preferable to give your dog treats that contain only one ingredient, are low in calories, and contain no added sugar, such as sweet potato and blueberry bites. Alternatively, you can treat your dog with items that are already in your refrigerator, such as tiny portions of sweet potatoes, apples, and bananas. Regularly weigh your dog, monitor how many calories they intake, and establish a target body weight for them. Also, pain can make a Frenchie nervous and unable to eat, so keep an eye out for evident signs of injury. Another common reason for your French Bulldog not to eat is discomfort in the mouth caused by dental issues. Furthermore, gastrointestinal conditions, certain medicines, vaccination, overfeeding, or other serious health problems can cause a French Bulldog not to eat. As a result, you must keep an eye on your Frenchie and contact your veterinarian if the condition persists for weeks. Do French Bulldogs Eat a Lot? French Bulldogs are opportunistic feeders by nature. Thus, they will continue to eat as long as you provide pet food. They may begin to require more than is necessary to fulfill their appetite due to this behavior. Also, when a French Bulldog is agitated, it may begin to overeat. The most effective strategy to combat stress-related overeating is to thrive in a calm environment. At times, your dog may become bored and eat more than usual to keep itself occupied somehow. Thus, you must keep a watch on any of these factors. Can French Bulldogs Eat Bones? Dogs should not consume cooked bones of any kind. The bones may splinter, resulting in deadly shards that might cause injury due to choking hazards. Thus, if you wish to offer your Frenchie a bone, vets recommend raw meat bones, preferably from farm-raised chicken. These are best given after a meal to prevent them from eating too much. Remove it after around ten minutes and store it in the refrigerator to keep it fresh for tomorrow. To avoid bacterial contamination, it is recommended to discard it after a few days and keep it separate from other raw meat and food. Can French Bulldogs Be Vegetarians? Each Frenchie is one-of-a-kind. Simply because your French Bulldog likes veggies does not mean it can go full-on vegetarian. Also, bear in mind that many veggies are dangerous and toxic to your French Bulldog. Certain vegetables are acceptable to be fed to a French Bulldog, but only in small portions. Final Thoughts French Bulldogs are, without a doubt, playful, intelligent, and compassionate dogs. On the other hand, Frenchies are greedy eaters, and food serves as their primary motivator. Thus, a critical component of owning this breed is understanding how much, how frequently, and what food to feed a French Bulldog. You can supply dry food, wet food, raw food diets, or a homemade diet for your pet. Since Frenchie pups and adults may have food sensitivities, providing or making the best dog food for their age and nutritional requirements is critical. By doing so, you can help your Frenchie prevent undesirable health problems. This can help guarantee that your Frenchie receives the safest and healthiest diet as much as possible. However, their weight and health will then determine how much you feed them as they get older. Calories matter, but are hard to count As French bulldogs get older, you should try to feed them according to their weight. For every pound, they should be fed between 25 and 30 calories. However, for the rest of this French bulldog puppy feeding guide, I am just going to talk in cups. Puppy weight How can weigh your puppy at the vets or, and this is can be a more interesting and fun way if your puppy already knows how to sit, have them sit on a scale at home. It will not be as accurate as a scale at the vet, but it could be a cheap and fun experience for you and your pet. Because of this, your puppy may be a little stubborn about eating dry and wet food if they were only just recently weaned. Here is where the math gets a little more detailed, but not too complicated. When they are between 8 to 12 weeks old, the puppy should be fed about 1. This food should be high in calories since they need extra nutrients that they are no longer getting from their mother. This kind of follows the main rule when it comes to spreading out the meals to 3 times a day. But for younger pups, many owners will split the 1. Because feeding them 0. Once they are between 6 and 9 months old, they should be used to their eating routine. That is when the main rule is applied because by then, the pup will be maturing into its adult size and should weigh between 20 and 25 pounds. What about older dogs? Also, if you are wondering how much they should be fed once they start hitting their senior years, they should be fed a little less as long only if they are not as active. Make sure you still stretch out the meals to 3 to 4 times like when they were puppies because it is not uncommon for their stomachs to weaken with old age. Overweight or underweight? French bulldog puppies usually weight between 8. Once they reach 6 to 9 months, they are just at or are closer to reaching their adult weight, .If the puppy is underweight, then add very small increments to each meal every day until they are no longer underweight. It is important to not add too much food because of the possibility of them getting a twisted stomach. If the puppy is overweight, you can either slightly reduce the size of their meal until they lose weight, or you can give them more exercise. Many people prefer the later since it helps the pup to get stronger and adds more bonding time. The same methods apply to grown French bulldogs as well. Handy Hint: Read this guide which explains how to check if you have a fat French Bulldog who needs to lose weight, with tips on how to get the pounds down. If the dog does not appear to be gaining weight when they are underweight or vice versa if they are overweight, you might want to take them to the vet since it could be a sign that something is affecting their health. Health conditions Since not every animal is the same, ask your vet the next time your pup has a check-up what a French bulldog of their size and age should weigh. Health factors like diabetes yes, dogs can have diabetes , can make your pup need a more strict diet or feeding routine. Here are some different diets and feeding routines. Raw food vs. Many dog lovers say that there are too many preservatives, fillers, wheat, corn, and protein in dry and wet food. While the raw food diet can be more natural, especially if it is organic, you also have to make sure your pup would be getting more foods with vitamins and minerals mixed in with the raw food that your pup would need. Raw food diets can be more expensive, require more storage room for the meats and veggies, and take longer to prepare. However, you would be personally ensuring that your little French bulldog pup is getting their full daily nutrition without harmful by-products and additives. Is there a good dry food diet? Possibly the biggest questions out of all of them: is there any good dry dog food out there and how do I find them? The answer is yes, there can be some healthy dry dog food products, but it takes some time to look for. The key is to look for dog food that does not contain any preservatives, fillers, wheat, corn, and too much protein. Fillers basically do not provide any nutritional value and can even harm your dog since most of the ingredients they use as fillers are common allergies for dogs that can cause skin conditions, bowel issues, and more. Wheat and corn are included since they are also a popular allergen for dogs. Too much protein is even more dangerous for them since it can put more pressure on the organs, throw off nutritional balance, increase the likelihood of diabetes, and can harm dogs that already have diabetes. Another two meat choices would be duck and turkey, but these are a little less common to find, especially if you are looking for a French bulldog specific dog food. Your dog eats his food too quickly Another common problem is how do you control how fast your French bulldog puppy eats. French bulldogs love to eat their food and eat it fast, which is one of the primary causes of GDV. Frenchies will stop eating for a number of reasons, some more serious that others. Keep reading to find out more. Typically speaking, the breeder that you have bought your French Bulldog puppy from should provide you with all of the information that you need on feeding your puppy. This includes what food your new puppy has been eating as well as how often your puppy has been fed throughout the day. French Bulldog puppies have high caloric and nutrient needs. Generally speaking, French Bulldog puppies aged anywhere from weeks of age need a total of 1. That being said, you will need to bear in mind that the quantity your dog eats depends on a number of factors, including their size, metabolism, and activity levels. Spreading out the meals is the key to a healthy, happy puppy, as it minimizes the peaks of energy your French Bulldog will experience due to dramatic rises and decreases in blood sugar levels between meals. Ensuring you feed them in these intervals will allow your puppy to maintain a healthy amount of energy and nutrients throughout their day. Once your French bulldog puppy reaches 6 months, you can reduce the number of times that you feed them down to 2 meals a day. Puppies can have sensitive stomachs. You will need to feed a puppy the same type of food, the same amount of food, and feed them at the same times of the day to ensure that their stomach can cope. To come up with a feeding plan for your specific puppy, you should consult with your veterinarian and come up with a suitable feeding schedule in conjunction with their advice. Age You will need to consider when feeding your French Bulldog puppy is their age. As a result, your puppy may initially be a little stubborn about eating dry and wet food if they were only just recently weaned. In this circumstance, you will need to ensure that you remain patient and consistent when it comes to meal times. Alternatively, you could try adding a dash of water to the dry kibble to make a type of gravy. Not only will the meaty aromas tempt them to the bowl and encourage them to eat their food, but it will also soften the dry kibble slightly and make it easier for them to chew. French Bulldog puppies are allowed to be separated from their mothers at 8 weeks, at which point they will weigh somewhere between 7 to 12lbs. How much your French Bulldog puppy weighs will depend on their gender, as male French Bulldogs typically weigh more than their female counterparts. They are considered fully grown around 12 to 14 months old, but may continue to put on muscle until they are two years old. They are a greedy breed by nature, and you need to be wary of overfeeding your French Bulldog as this can lead to a variety of health conditions if they become overweight. When assessing whether your Frenchie puppy is overweight, you should be able to see a little rib and they should have a defined waistline. When it comes to choosing to give your dog treats, fewer high quality treats on special occasions are much better than feeding them many lower quality ones more often to train them. When it comes to training your puppy, positive reinforcement in the form of praise also works. Calories As your French Bulldog puppy gets older, the number of calories they are eating should increase according to their weight. You should feed your puppy 12 to 30 calories per pound of their body weight. However, if you are not sure how much to feed your French Bulldog puppy, consult your vet. Nutrition One of the most important factors to consider when feeding your French Bulldog puppy is nutrition, as a healthy, well-balanced diet is essential for their growth and development. This simply comes down to the fact that puppies have higher energy requirements and are actively developing muscle and other tissues. Energy comes from the breakdown of protein fats and carbohydrates. Health Conditions When feeding your French Bulldog puppy, you will also need to bear in mind any health conditions that your Frenchie could be prone to developing. Diarrhea Stomach upsets are very common in Frenchies, so monitoring their diet is absolutely essential. Signs of a digestion problem include wet, runny, and loose stools. If a food allergy is suspected, the only treatment is an elimination diet. As a result, you will need to watch out for any food sensitivities your dog has. Reflux Flat-faced breeds such as Frenchies can suffer from reflux or struggle to swallow their food. You will need to monitor this when it comes to giving them their food. Dental Problems Flat-faced dogs often have crowded teeth which, in turn, can cause dental problems when it comes to chewing. While some French Bulldogs are hyperactive, others are lazy and love nothing more than lying on the couch all day. As your French Bulldog edges closer to adolescence, the amount of exercise they need will increase. Around 60 minutes of daily exercise split into two walks is plenty for your fully grown French Bulldog. As a result, too much exercise can even be bad for French Bulldogs. As a flat-faced breed, French Bulldogs can overheat and struggle to breathe and pant, especially in warmer weather. Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome BOAS is a condition that can cause severe breathing problems and is caused by their shorter faces. As a result, you should make sure that you take precautions to keep your dog cool and make sure that you understand the signs of heatstroke in dogs. Consult With Your Vet Above all else, consulting with your vet should be your first port of call when bringing home your new puppy. Invest In A Slow Feed Dog Bowl A slow feeding bowl is a useful dog bowl to have as they are designed with ridges or grooves which are designed to slow your dog down when they are eating. However, some treats contain high amounts of sugar, colourings, milk products and fat. As a result, you will need to make sure that you choose your treats carefully and use them wisely, as failure to do so can quickly result in your puppy becoming overweight. The moisture in wet food reduces the risk of urinary infections and other related issues while your puppy is still getting used to drinking water. As a result, it costs more to feed your dog, even if you are buying the product in bulk for a cheaper price. Wet dog food cannot be left in a bowl for hours on end, and it can be messier. As a result, people often consider wet dog food less convenient to feed their dog and store. Dry Dog Food Benefits Cheaper Dry dog foods are affordable and are incredibly easy to store for longer periods of time, meaning that they have a longer shelf life than wet foods. Dry kibble is excellent for getting rid of plaque build-up in the process of your dog chewing crunchy, dry kibble. However, despite the lack of hydration this dog food provides. Your French Bulldog puppy requires high-quality dog food that provides everything it needs to meet its requirements and ensure healthy development. In Summary Generally speaking, you should be feeding your French Bulldog puppy 1. Before coming up with a consistent feeding schedule for your French Bulldog puppy, you should consult with your veterinarian. Following their advice, you will be able to make a feeding schedule that suits your dog and you. Good luck and enjoy welcoming your new French Bulldog puppy into your family! Post navigation. Always consult a vet. Ideally, 2. This sort of consult is always quick and cheap sometimes free and you owe it to your companion to get the opinion of an expert veterinarian. Bred from Great Mastiffs and other types of guard dog breeds, the Bernese Mountain Dog was brought over to Switzerland approximately 2, years ago by the Romans. Aside from being known for having a loving personality, these breeds are only one of the four kinds of Sennenhund-type dogs from the Swiss Alps. These dogs were generally known as farm dogs that worked hard. Eventually, the Bernese Mountain Dog breed mixed with the Poodle breed led to the creation of the incredible Bernedoodle dog breed. It was a very easy transaction, and Erin supplied me with a folder of information about Dakota including his shots record and a health guarantee. While waiting to get Dakota, Erin was great about sending me pictures of him and his siblings. She would regularly give me updates on how he was doing, and I felt like I knew him before I met him. It was obvious when I did get Dakota how loved and cared for he was. He was a very happy and social puppy from day one. He transitioned beautifully into our home with my kids and other dog. He is three now and still the happiest and sweetest dog! I have had absolutely no issues with his health or temperament. I would absolutely get another dog from Pecan Hill Puppies again! For the complete list please see our Boxer Reference Links page. In the case of boxers from a reputable breeder, you will usually pay more than what an owner is charging since these breeders usually have to pay higher licensing and insurance fees as well as build kennels and other facilities that would be suitable for breeding dogs. In addition, reputable breeders will allow you to take the boxer home with a signed contract that prevents them from breeding their dog or selling it to other people. However, there are usually people who breed boxers as a side hobby and will be quite willing to make a deal with you. Although it is not recommended that you buy from these people, they usually give the dog away for free or for a very low price because they are trying to get rid of their dogs. In addition, buying from someone who breeds boxers as a side hobby may be cheaper. How to Find A Responsible Boxer Breeder in Wisconsin To find a responsible boxers breeder in Wisconsin, the best thing to do is consult your veterinarian. Since there are many reputable breeders in this state, asking people who live nearby would be advisable as well. If you cannot ask anyone locally for help, then using the Internet will also allow you to look up lists of accredited dog breeders which may give you some leads on finding reputable breeders. Another important factor to consider if you want to buy a boxer puppy in Wisconsin is where the dog will live. Although Wisconsin does not have any requirements for the living conditions of dogs, it is always best to find out how big the kennel or barn will be and what the weather conditions are like in order to make sure that your boxer puppy can adapt to its new environment. Visit Your Wisconsin Boxer Breeder in Person In order to find boxers for sale in Wisconsin from a reputable breeder, it is important that you visit their kennel or farm. Although there are many breeders who advertise through the Internet and will ship a boxer puppy to your home, it is always best to buy a dog from a local breeder since they can ensure you good customer service. Visiting your Boxer breeder in person will also give you a chance to see the kind of environment your boxer is living in. This will allow you to determine if their breeding practices help promote good health and temperament as well as how they treat the dogs. It also allows you to connect with the breeder and makes it easier for you both to establish a strong relationship. Questions to Ask Ask for References from Your Boxer Breeder in Wisconsin When you are searching for a Wisconsin boxer breeder, making sure that the boxing breeders in your area are trustworthy is just one of the most important factors to consider. You must know that not all reputable boxer breeders would be aware of how to raise their puppies correctly. References will be of great help in making sure that you will only be dealing with the most reliable boxer breeders in Wisconsin. For these reasons, asking for references is one of the best ways to ensure that they are professional Wisconsin boxer breeders. Ask Your Wisconsin Boxer Breeder if You Can Meet Past Customers Asking your Wisconsin boxer breeder to introduce you to their past clients is one of the most effective ways in order to determine if they are professional or not. If possible, you can also ask for referrals at this time. If these references and referrals are promising, then it basically means that they are reliable boxing breeders in Wisconsin. However, always keep in mind that not all reputable boxing breeders would provide these things right away especially when it comes to the safety of their puppies. Take note that responsible and trustworthy boxers breeders would look out for the welfare of their pets before anything else. This is why you must always make it a point to trust the boxer breeder in Wisconsin only when they are willing to hand over these things. Does the boxer breeder in Wisconsin that you are considering working with have a good relationship with their veterinarian? This basically means that they are responsible when it comes to taking care of their pets and not just looking at them as a source of income. You just need to remember that not all reputable boxer dog breeders would be easy to work with. In fact, you should already know this when looking for boxers in Wisconsin since not everyone has the same standards and expectations. They ask for payment during the process of the transaction: Before getting to work with Wisconsin boxer breeders, they must first know what kind of payment they are looking forward to accepting. If they immediately ask for payment even before doing anything, then this is one discouraging sign that points out that you might be dealing with an unethical boxer breeder at this present time. To them, money comes first and not the welfare of their pets. There are a lot of people who would prefer written contracts since these things hold both sides accountable. This is the kind of question which you should ask your breeder even before anything else. If they keep on telling you that nothing is wrong with them, this is yet another discouraging sign which points out that there might be something wrong with their facilities right now. So make sure to ask this question before agreeing to any contract. Remember that this is not just another pet since they are known to be quite destructive. So if you want them to do this somewhere else, make sure that you give them something which they could use for this purpose like chew toys and bones. But at the same time, it will also depend upon their age. If they are still young, then it might take some time before they would chew on things other than their own toys and bones. Just keep in mind that these pets would eventually grow up one day, and they will start exploring your house. This is the only way for them to learn what kinds of things are appropriate or not. You must never forget about this since this would have a long-term effect on their behavior later on in life. Just be patient when it comes to training them so everything would go according to plan. If these pets go to the bathroom inside your house, then this can lead to a lot of serious problems for both you and them. Remember that training your pet is essential because it helps strengthen your relationship with each other over time. They need enclosure crate training. Crate training works hand-in-hand with potty training which is why you should not forget about this one thing above all else. They would give you some good advice which will help improve the overall relationship that you have with your pet. Remember, patience is a virtue. Just have patience with them since they will eventually learn what you want them to do regardless of how long it may take. Enjoy your brand new Boxer puppy. In the past we have volunteered for other rescue organisations, to whom we owe a debt of gratitude for teaching us so much about this stunning breed and about how to give chances to those who have had none. We humans prefer to stay out of the spotlight but we believe our dogs deserve to shine! Our own dogs are examples of what love, understanding and experience can bring to German Shepherds who may not have known much love in the past. While for some of our rescue dogs our support means helping them to overcome their fears, anxieties and pasts, for each and every one it is about finding them the perfect forever family. Why do German Shepherds need a rescue? This is a question we often get asked, and the answer has everything to do with the needs of our special breed. German Shepherds are sensitive, responsive dogs bred to work. They have above average energy and intelligence and need a family who can meet their need for physical and intellectual challenge. For one reason or another, these dogs can find themselves in need of a new home and we are here to help. Where do our dogs come from? The beautiful dogs come into our rescue from different backgrounds. Some may be dearly loved family pets, whose owners have found themselves in such difficult circumstances that they are no longer able to give them the care they need. However, other dogs will need significant medical and behavioural rehabilitation to give them the life they deserve. Contact Us. What Price are Pedigree Papers? Wrap Up Meet the Pugador Like all designer breeds, the Pugador can inherit traits from both parent breeds. Because Pugs and Labs are both loving and loyal breeds, the Pugador is a great family dog. Labs are athletic and eager to please. Exploring and going on outdoor adventures are essential activities for a happy and well-adjusted Lab. On the other hand, Pugs are affectionate dogs who are content with staying home and cuddling on the couch. They have moderate exercise needs, but they enjoy playing with their owner. They can be mischievous and even stubborn, but these small dogs are very loving and loyal. Each dog has a unique personality, and you can usually get an idea of what a puppy will be like if you can observe the parents. If you want to get a Pugador, you should talk to the breeder to find out more about the parents and the personality traits you can expect to find in your new companion. How Common Are Pugadors? Pugadors usually inherit the pushed-in nose that gives Pugs their unique look and sometimes get the curly tail that characterizes this breed. The result is an adorable pet with the traits you would expect to find in a Pug but with a larger body. How Big Do Pugadors Get? The size of a Pugador can vary from one individual to another and can be hard to predict since there is a significant size difference between the two parents. Labs are medium-sized dogs. Males are larger and weigh 65 to 80 lbs. A Pugador will be somewhere between the two breeds. It will look like a small Labrador or a large Pug. Pugs have moderate exercise needs. These small dogs are fine with a daily walk of about minutes. Pug owners should monitor their pets for signs of brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome and limit exercise if needed. On the other hand, Labradors belong to the sporting group. This breed is very active and needs at least 80 minutes of exercise a day. These dogs love to walk, run, play, swim, and hike. Pugs and Labs are at two opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to exercise needs, and Pugadors typically fall somewhere in the middle. You should aim for an hour of exercise a day and adjust how much exercise your Pugador gets as needed. If your pup seems restless or mischievous, spending more time playing or walking could help. You should also watch out for shortness of breath and other respiratory issues. Mixing a Pug with a Lab should reduce the severity of these symptoms, but Pugadors can still inherit breathing problems linked to their flat face. You should see less shedding compared to most Labs, thanks to the Pug genes. However, your Pugador might have slightly longer hair than most Pugs due to their Lab parent. You might need to comb or brush your Pugador two to three times a week to keep their coat clean and reduce shedding. Because of their unique face, Pugs require daily cleaning of their facial folds. These wrinkles can arbor bacteria and become smelly. In some cases, skin infections can even appear. If you have a Pug, you should clean these facial folds every day with some baby wipes or a soft cloth. You might also need to moisturize their nose and folds with some coconut oil to promote healthy skin. Pugadors also get these facial folds. Pugs and Labs are two great breeds for those looking for a family dog who gets along well with children. Pugadors will share characteristics from these two breeds and fit right in. They should also do well with other animals, provided that the breeder took the time to socialize them as puppies. Because Pugadors are larger than a purebred Pug, they might not be a good match for those who live in tiny homes or apartments. Remember that Labs belong to the sporting group and that Pugadors will need more exercise than most Pugs. Besides, your Pugador will probably inherit a drive to play outside and explore from her Labrador parent. Mixing a Pug with a Lab results in an adorable dog with a loyal and affectionate personality. My wife and I love playing with our active miniature Labradoodle Max. We want all Oodle puppies to be healthy and happy, have lots of fun and be part of the family. Load More. There will undoubtedly be a large number of pet lovers prepared to help you. Some individuals are hesitant to purchase a Pugador mix since crossbreeding is still a controversial procedure as it increases the danger of unpredictable behavior. While some view mixed breeds as a genetic anomaly, others perceive advantages in terms of appearance, health, and temperament. The combined DNA of crossbreed dogs decides the benefits and drawbacks of owning one. This is a great option for households with children and other pets. Sadly, this means that this breed is not a good guard dog because it prefers to play rather than protect. Intelligent dog: This mixed breed shows a lot of signs of dependability, especially when properly taught. Labradors who have been crossed with Pugs are intelligent dogs who can be trained to do practically anything. High work drive: Pugadors can be sporty, as they share qualities with active Labradors. This hybrid is ideal for active families who enjoy traveling on vacations and working out. The Labrador and Pug mix is great for active households because it may require frequent exercise. Here are some disadvantages of having a Labrador Pug mix: Unpredictability in size: Despite the fact that the Pug Lab mix is expected to grow to be between small and medium in size, the wide genetic size difference between the parent breeds makes it difficult for owners to forecast which gene the pup will inherit in terms of size. Unpredictable behavior: Hybrids, unlike purebreds, have temperaments that are often unpredictable. This is especially true for mixes at a young age. When not properly trained, they can exhibit aggressive and stubborn characteristics. Prone to several health issues: Labrador Pug mixes are susceptible to diseases that affect their parent breeds. Buying a Pug Lab mix puppy from a reputable breeder, going to the doctor on a regular basis, and sticking to a healthy daily routine can all help prevent health issues. It is critical to understand the benefits and drawbacks of owning a Pug Lab mix before purchasing one. This will help you determine if the dog is right for you and if you can care for it in the future. Lifespan Sociability The primary concerns are health-related with both parent breeds. We suggest caution when looking for a Pugador. At this point, the standards are a bit loose, at least until he gains recognition with the various organizations. We suggest researching the traits of both the Pug and Labrador before buying a puppy. The Pug brings a whole slate of issues with his flat face. We understand how people can fall in love with this pup. His antics and adorable head-tilting behavior win many fans of the breed. The Labrador is all-American, even if his origins stretch back to Newfoundland. The Pug cannot tolerate being alone. He loves people that much. He also has a high propensity for weight gain. The Lab has an oily coat that is waterproof that some people may find offensive because of its odor, especially when it gets wet. He is a barker with a stronger prey drive to chase than the Pug which may prompt him to chase the cat. The Labrador is more than a bird dog. Many people associate the Labrador Retriever as a gun dog accompanying waterfowl hunters. That may explain his current role, but he got his start with a different type of water animal, namely, fish. Cod anglers depended on this pup to help them with their job. The Pug started out living the good life. The Pug is the epitome of a companion animal. What else can you say about a pup that emperors pampered and warriors guarded? He continues this coveted standing, albeit with ordinary folks like us, instead of royalty. The Pug has fans in high places. Some may say that the Pug is a dog that only a mother could love. Just tell that to Hugh Laurie, Billy Joel, and James Taylor, who have all fallen under the spell of this adorable pooch. It brings together the comical nature of the Pug with the friendliness of the Lab. The intelligence of the Retriever is the star attraction when it comes to trainability. He is a smart dog that is eager to please. Both parent breeds are quite affectionate, even with strangers. Therefore, the Pugador is not the best choice for a watchdog. The Pugador is an agreeable dog on most fronts. However, he is sensitive to harsh reprimands, which he gets from both parent breeds. Positive reinforcement is the key to building a strong bond with your pup. There are also several other things you need to know about this hybrid. Are These Dogs Good for Families? He adores people and is kid-friendly, too. He also has the energy to keep up with them. We suggest supervising playtime with your pet if you have small children. The Retriever is a muscular dog that may not realize his strength around the little ones. We recommend early socialization to ensure a smooth transition into your home. Neither the Lab nor the Pug has an overly strong prey drive. Both parent breeds have their quirks and varying susceptibilities to chronic health conditions. Knowing upfront what you can expect will go a long way toward nipping any potential problems in the bud. Whether you feed your pup a diet for a medium or large dog will depend on the dominant parent breed. Puppy and adult foods differ in their energy and nutritional density. We emphasize this point because of the propensity for weight gain in the Pugador. You should be able to see a distinct waistline when looking down at your pup. Remember that the instructions on the dog food bag are only guidelines and not rules. We also suggest reserving treats as training aids to help keep his weight in check. You can feed your Pugador puppy three or four times a day. Once he reaches adulthood, cut it down to two meals, evenly spaced throughout the day. Doing so may help prevent him from gulping down his food too rapidly. The essential thing to remember is that both parent breeds are highly food-motivated. However, if he has the flat face of a Pug, we recommend limiting his time in the water because of possible respiratory issues. The same caution applies to working your Lab-dominant pup hard. Unfortunately, the Pug Lab Mix is susceptible to a condition called exercise-induced collapse if the play gets too intense. We suggest starting from day one. Offer him a toy when he starts to bite. The key to harnessing his eagerness to learn is with regular, consistent training. That means regular brushing to keep the hair under control. Bear in mind that the oil serves a vital purpose for this water dog. Their large size is also a factor. Pugs also bring a new host of challenges because of their flat faces. It often manifests itself in a variety of conditions, from heat stroke to respiratory disorders to eye problems. That makes preventive vet care imperative for the Pugador. Pre-breeding health screenings can only go so far, especially since the Lab brings other unexpected factors to the mix, such as exercise-induced collapse and obesity. The latter is also a risk for other health issues, such as diabetes. Minor Conditions. This home test gives accurate results giving fur parents like you to learn in advance the symptoms to look for as well as prepare for the possible medical expenses. So, here are some of the 8 health problems that your Pug Lab Mix may inherit: 1. Hip Dysplasia Big dogs like Labrador Retriever are more susceptible to hip dysplasia , an orthopedic and congenital disease. Puppies with the condition will suffer from mobility issues as they grow older because of the uneven growth of the ball and the socket in their hip joints. Respiratory Problems The Pug parent is prone to suffer from breathing disorders as a result of its short nostrils. The signs you need to look for are excessive panting and drooling and if not addressed, it could lead to collapse due to low oxygen levels. Epilepsy It is the Labrador Retriever gene that can pass on this neurological problem. A dog afflicted with this disease will appear normal and then suddenly will exhibit seizures or uncontrollable shaking that normally lasts for about 1 to 2 minutes. Wobbler Disease Often seen among large dogs, this is a disease in the cervical spine. This is a painful condition and the common signs are difficulty getting up from bed and weakness. Over Heating If the Pug Lab mix dog inherited the flat face of its parents, chances are, he will also be prone to overheating and dehydration due to heat and physical exertion. Legg-Calve Perthe Disease This is a developmental disease brought about by the degeneration of the femoral head of the leg bone. The warning signs are trouble getting up and walking. The Labrador Retriever is one of the breeds commonly diagnosed with this benign or non-cancerous growth. These tumors may grow large which could affect mobility and in some cases, cause pain. Plus, you are not guaranteed that puppies produced in puppy mills are well-socialized or not. However, if you are willing to pay just a little bit more getting your Lab Pug puppy from an ethical breeder means that you will be provided with a health guarantee for the puppy of your choice. Not only that but puppies from responsible breeders of Pug Lab have received their initial vaccination shots and have been dewormed. Not to mention that most responsible breeders also bring up the puppies in a loving family environment, so this means that your puppy is already socialized and can adapt well to a new environment. The answer is no because most Pugador puppies are lactose-intolerant. By the time Pug and Lab Mix puppies are released to their new owners, they are already eating solid food. To keep them safe without fur parents having to guard them all the time, one of the things that you can do is install an invisible and electronic dog fence around your home perimeter as we discussed above. Aside from the cost of getting a puppy, other recurring expenses go with raising a Pugador puppy. Types of Expenses. Origin of the Pug Lab Mix Designer dogs — dogs with mixed pedigree heritage — are nothing new. Formerly known as mutts, attitudes towards them changed completely when Labradoodles burst onto the scene in the s. Since then, Labs have been deliberately crossed with all kinds of different breeds, to create a plethora of first generation hybrids. They inherit both their physical and behavioral traits at random, so that when their parents are very different like a Lab and a Pug! Pug Lab Mix appearance Labradors and Pugs could hardly look more different. And one Pugador dog can look very different from the next, if they inherit more physical traits from one parent than the other. This is even true of siblings in the same litter! Pug Lab mix size Pugs are one of the best known toy dog breeds. They stand about a foot tall at the shoulder, and weigh 14 to 18 pounds. Labradors meanwhile are twice as tall as Pugs, and weigh 55 to 80 pounds. A Pug Lab mix full grown will usually reach somewhere between 35 and 65 pounds. But there are also outliers, who end up bigger or smaller than that. The size of their Labrador parent is a contributing factor. Pugadors from shorter, slimmer, working Labrador lines are likely to weigh less fully grown than Pugadors from heavyset show Labrador parents. Labs on the other hand are taller, more rectangular than square, and may have the quintessential Labrador otter tail. Pugadors can look a lot like a Pug, a lot like a Lab, or somewhere in between. Variation in appearance is a matter of more than just aesthetics as well. Coat Labradors are best known in black, chocolate and yellow coats. Pugs can be black, or fawn with a black mask. Black Lab Pug mix puppies that is, from a black Lab parent! Some individuals may carry the genes for a white locket or blaze on their chest. Chocolate Lab and Pug mix dogs, and Pugador puppies with a fawn Pug parent and a yellow Lab parent will have a brown coat and a visible mask over their muzzle and ears. Their base color can vary from pale gold through to deeper, redder hues. Finally, Labrador Retriever Pug coat length and texture can vary too. Their temperament can also vary a lot too. Pug personality Pugs are the consummate lapdog. They were bred over thousands of generations to provide their wealthy owners with company. As a result they are very affectionate, and will seek out the attention of their owner a lot of the time. They can also struggle with separation anxiety, if their owner has to leave the house to work for long periods every day. Which means they are moderately trainable, but not impressively so. Labradors on the other hand are among the best known working dogs there are. Not only are they quick learners, they have a powerful work ethic. This makes them quicker and easier to train than Pugs, but also means they need a lot more mental stimulation before they are ready to chill out for the remainder of the day. A Pugador may be unsuitable for an owner who is unable or disinterested in spending lots of time on structured training games. One thing a Labrador Pug mix is sure to love is the company of people and meeting new friends. Training and exercising your Pug Lab Mix To bring out the best in their personality, Lab Pug mix puppies should be carefully socialized to lots of different experiences from a young age. Yet, there are also many guides, owners and breeders that refer to this as a pugador. This cute name gives the mix its own sense of identity. Almost everyone knows what a Labrador looks like. The Labrador Retriever breed has its roots in Newfoundland, Canada. The first Labs were developed by crossing St. Johns Waterdogs with other small breeds. Labs were originally used to pull nets full of fish from the water. At the start of the 19th century, some of these dogs were taken to the UK for duck hunting. Labradors have also proven to be highly successful as guide dogs. The History of the Pug The Pug is a very ancient breed that is believed to date as far back as 2, years ago. Chinese emperors loved the unique appearance of the Pug, Shih Tzu and Pekingese breeds. For some time, it was only possible to acquire any of these breeds if you were gifted one by an emperor. Pug are said to have accompanied William and Mary of the Royal House of Orange to the UK, where this little breed became very popular as well. There are a few immediate questions about the physical features and health of this mix One is the size difference and breeding issues that come with it. There are major health risks when breeding small and large breeds together. The best pug and lab mix breeders will understand the correct procedures and look after their dogs. They will know that the only way to create a healthy litter is via a male pug and female lab, with artificial insemination. The opposite would be too dangerous for a female pug with the size of the pups. Irresponsible breeders may not know this. We clearly have two very different sized dogs here, so what can we expect with the size of this cross. Is this a tiny little lab on short legs, an over-sized pug or something in the middle? The lab pug mix weight is classed as being between 30 and 50 lbs, with a height between 16 and 18 inches tall. Yet, it is difficult to guess a pug lab mix size. Some may have a leaning more towards the lab mother and end up bigger than that. There are online pictures of lab pug mix puppies that give an impression of the physical features that you can expect. Some see them as attractive crosses of the two parents. Others feel that this mix makes the attractive gun dog misshapen and ugly. View this post on Instagram Aug 1, at pm PDT There will be some dog lovers that wonder if this might be a positive step. Some may see this as a chance to breed some positive Labrador genes into the pug to remove some health issues. There is the hope that a larger muzzle and stronger body might reduce any risk of breathing or joint problems. What is actually happening here is that breeders have shrunk the labrador, squashed in its muzzle and given it more health problems to contend with. The list of risk factors with this pug Labrador mix is pretty long. There are joint issues carried over from the pug dog, as well as the risk of hip dysplasia from the lab. This means that they need good joint care and owners need to watch out for weight gain. This could put stress on those joints. There are also risks or eye problems, gastric issues and encephalitis. Health care is essential with any dog, but there may be some pugador owners that struggle with this breed because of the issues raised here. This will provide some basic information on food, exercise diet and health care to get you started. This is perfect when dealing with any joint or breathing issues. It all depends whether the pug breeds with a black, chocolate or yellow lab. There are many pictures around of black lab pug mix dogs. A black lab and black pug are sure to create this color. There is also the chance of a pug yellow lab mix, with a much lighter coat, and pug chocolate lab mix. Some will also retain the fawn look of the pug father. The problem with this coat is that it has the tendency to shed quite a lot. Both pugs and Labradors are heavy shedders and this means a lot of time spent brushing these dogs. Overgrown nails are likely to crack or split, leading to pain or discomfort. Dogs with clean and healthy mouths live happier and longer lives. This is where things start to get a little more positive with this pug lab mix dog. The personalities are generally very appealing. Both parent dogs are loving and friendly with a good heart. They are happy to be around kids and make great additions to the family. Therefore, this hybrid offspring should also be a great addition to the home. They will love to play and be loyal to their family pack. The only potential issue here comes with separation anxiety. There is a chance that this mix might become so attached to their family that they hate to be left alone for long periods of time. Ideally, they should be with a family where someone is at home most of the day. Want to train your dog without spending hundreds of dollars? Training pug and lab mix puppies All puppies need a strong training regimen from an early age. Here the focus has to be on that separation anxiety, as well as general obedience and housetraining. These dogs should be pretty eager to please and quick to learn with that mix of genes. Beware of using food-based rewards though, as lab mixes can gain weight and overeat a little too easily. If your Lab Pug Mix inherits most of his traits from the Pug, he will tend to be a couch potato. Since this is a brachycephalic dog, you will also need to use a harness rather than a leash during training. Do not give him treats too often, as these can increase the risk of obesity. Owners should also provide their dogs with probiotic and fish oil supplements to help keep their skin healthy. Also, giving your dog fresh water is vital to keeping them hydrated. Well, the average lifespan of a Lab Pug Mix is around 10 to 15 years. Their life expectancy will vary from one dog to another, depending on the nutrition, care and attention they receive. Both parent breeds have different dietary and nutritional requirements, so make sure to consult with your vet to ensure you are giving him a proper diet. Life Span Did You Know? One of the facts about Labrador Retrievers is that there are a few distinct color coat variations. Fox Red Labradors are a rare-colored version of the Labrador Retriever. Despite this, they can be registered as purebred Yellow Labrador Retrievers , as the darker-colored coat is not considered to be a disqualifying factor. Due to their unique and certainly eye-catching color, the Fox Red Labrador continues to grow in popularity. Labrador Retrievers are known for being exceptionally sweet and are one of the most affectionate dog breeds. These dogs yearn to be a part of a family, and fit right in when joining one. In fact, Labs are considered one of the kid-friendly dog breeds. Well-socialized Fox Red Labradors tend to get along well with children, other dogs, other pets, and even strangers. After all, every person they meet is a potential friend that they can play with. Labrador Retrievers are one of the most active dog breeds. Despite their energy, Fox Red Labradors can adapt to most settings. As long as this dog breed has a chance to get in daily walks, go outside to run and play, and they get plenty of attention, they are content. They are not overly affected by cold weather, but they have a dense double coat. Fox Red Retrievers are also happiest when in the presence of people and they love to be with their families whenever possible. They also have a lot of energy and get bored easily. Potential health concerns to be aware of in Fox Red Labrador Retrievers can include hereditary myopathy, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , progressive retinal atrophy, heart disease, and cataracts. There is also a condition with a genetic link that can occur in young adult Labradors called exercise-induced collapse EIC. Carriers can be identified by DNA tests. Good breeding practices can reduce the risk of potential health issues and make a big difference in the health of Fox Red Lab puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both parents and about any health tests or clearances. The national breed club recommends hip and elbow evaluations, an EIC DNA test, and an ophthalmologist evaluation at a minimum. As a large, deep-chested dog breed, the Fox Red Labrador Retriever is at a higher risk of bloat. Bloat in dogs can be dangerous and can become fatal if the stomach flips gastric torsion. Labrador Retrievers are one of the smartest dog breeds and are highly trainable. Although they can become stubborn at times, they are eager to please and pick up on training quickly overall. Their energy and intelligence mean they can lose focus in training and get bored easily. However, training that is kept clear, consistent, and focused on positive rewards usually keeps them focused and responding well. Any color variant of the Labrador Retriever is ideal for beginner dog owners. Fox Red Labrador Retrievers have a short, dense double coat that is water-resistant. They shed year-round and more heavily as the seasons change. Brushing their coat a few times a week and daily brushing during seasonal shedding is usually enough to keep their coat healthy and looking great. Bathing is on an occasional, as-needed basis. Because their coat tends to protect them from the cold and they are one of the dog breeds that tend to love water , your Fox Red Lab may try to go for a swim regardless of the season. If they are an avid swimmer or tend to get into a lot of things, you may need to bathe them more often. It is highly recommended to give them a bath or at least rinse them off thoroughly after going swimming with your dog. Their nails should be trimmed once or twice monthly. This will help prevent ear infections. Proper dental care for dogs is essential for preventing the tartar buildup that lends to dental diseases like gum disease and tooth decay. Brushing their teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day is a good start. You can also supplement your dental care efforts with dental hygiene chews, a special dental care diet, and more. Like other Labs, Fox Red Labrador Retrievers are high-energy dogs that require a lot of daily activity to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for this dog. However, they will likely always be up for more activity if you are. Often, they are just happy to be spending time with you. Labs tend to have an extended puppyhood until they are around years old. They will mellow out a little, but also tend to maintain a puppy-like exuberance even in their senior years. Once they are done growing and your vet has cleared them for more activities, you can try a lot of different things. Labs are athletic and versatile dogs. They are one of the sturdy dog breeds for outdoor adventures and tend to enjoy a variety of activities. They tend to excel in swimming, running, obstacle courses, and several dog sports. Fully-grown Fox Red Labrador Retrievers usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Fox Red Labs generally live for years on average.

quality french bulldog puppies - This will ensure that the puppy comes from healthy parents and has been raised properly. How would you know which is the right breeder? There are many lists of good and trusted breeders online that you can check. Alternatively, you can look at dog breeder reviews in your area. After that, once you get in contact with a breeder, you should make sure that they are upfront and honest with you. And of course — always ask for a health certificate! What about adopting a bulldog from a shelter? Still, well-run shelters and rescues often provide health certificates and adequate health info. They also take good care of their animals. It should go without saying that young pups are full of energy but a lot of new bulldog owners get surprised by that. What does that mean? In fact, bulldog puppies are a lot of fun! However, you should be mindful of that before getting your bulldog puppy. The dogs from this breed are very loyal and defensive of their family Most dog breeds are known as loyal and loving toward their families but this goes doubly for bulldogs. This makes them an incredibly dependable breed — unless you mistreat it, your bulldog will always be by your side and will always be willing to help you out. Bulldogs often need to be taught not to bark. Because they feel the need to protect you, bulldogs often have the urge to bark not just at strangers but even just at outside noises. This can be annoying not just for you but for your neighbors too. Bulldogs can be a little jumpy. This is as much out of fear as it is due to their instinct to react to anything that might threaten their family. But while it is incredibly cute, it also leads to certain problems. Breeds with such flat noses are called brachycephalic dogs. With pretty much all of them, this unique facial structure is due to the way they were bred over the years. And with all of them, it has two negative side-effects: The potential respiratory health problems we mentioned above. Lots of snoring! Sure, the latter sounds much less problematic than the former. And it is! But the extra loud snoring and snorting are still important to keep in mind Why? This breed is extremely social and requires near-constant human presence A common misconception is that all dog breeds are social. Sure, all dogs are more social than cats but there are still dog breeds that are much more individualistic than others. Bulldogs always want to be near you, they always love sleeping on you, they love getting pets and belly rubs, and they adore any type of attention and pleasant physical interaction. Is there a downside to this, however? Unfortunately, yes. This hyper-social mentality of bulldogs makes them ill-suited for people who spend lots of time out of the house. Instead, bulldogs are best-suited for people who work from home. Get your bulldog a second canine buddy. A bored dog is a dog that takes out its frustration on your couch. Fortunately, bulldogs are not one of those breeds. Instead, all they need is a bit of running, a bit of ball play, and the rest can be hugs and petting on the couch. If you make the mistake of overplaying or overworking your bulldog there may be some unfortunate health consequences such as overheating, hyperventilating, or a stroke. In short bulldogs are lazy dogs for lazy people. Or, at least adult bulldogs are that way — as we said, bulldog puppies can be quite energetic before they grow up. Be mindful of overheating your bulldog Going on from the previous point, bulldogs are really easy to accidentally overheat. And not just with excessive physical exercise either. Instead, a bulldog can get overheated due to many different reasons: Stress. UKC Classification: Companion Dog Prevalence: Common The English bulldog is a brawny little powerhouse whose characteristic crablike waddle exudes great strength, stability and vigor. The dog's head is large and spherical, and the muzzle is extremely short, giving the face a flattened appearance. The English bulldog's eyes are dark and set low and wide on the forehead in the frontal plane. The nose is black and slightly upturned. The jaws or "chops" are massive, broad and undershot. The lower jaw juts out in front of the upper jaw to scarcely expose the lower incisors, producing a comical grin. The lips are fleshy and pendulous. The cheeks are well rounded and protrude sideways. The ears are thin, small and angle forward like flaps that frame the forehead. The English bulldog's neck is short and thick; the shoulders are massive, muscular and broad. The chest is deep and full, and the back is barreled and slightly arched. His rounded hips protrude slightly above the level of the back. The stubby tail is thick and either straight or screwed. His short, stocky legs have great muscle definition. They are splayed out and slightly bowed at the elbows and hocks to form a sturdy, base-wide stance. The English bulldog stands about 16 inches tall. The female weighs about 50 pounds 23 kilograms , and the male weighs about 54 pounds 24 kilograms. The English bulldog's skin is loose and pendant with heavy wrinkles and thick folds on the face and a dewlap hanging from the throat. The coat is short and fine textured. The various color patterns are brindle, piebald, and solid white, red, fawn or fallow. Personality: The English bulldog has a sweet, gentle disposition. Dependable and predictable, the bulldog is a wonderful family pet and loving to most children. People-oriented as a breed, they actively solicit human attention. However, they have retained the courage that was originally bred into them for bull baiting, so they make fine watchdogs. Although they generally get along well with other family pets, English bulldogs can be aggressive to unfamiliar dogs. Living With: English bulldogs make fine apartment pets and do not require a yard. Typically low-endurance dogs, they need only a moderate amount of exercise. They thrive best in temperate climates; they readily overheat and have breathing difficulties in hot weather, and they chill easily in cold temperatures. Generally loud breathers, English bulldogs tend to snore and wheeze. Many drool as well. They are moderate shedders and their short coats require little grooming. However, the wrinkles on the face should be wiped regularly to prevent skin infections. History: Named for its use in the sport of bull baiting, the English bulldog seems to have originated in the British Isles sometime prior to the 13th century. One of the few references to the sport dates back to , and talks about a butcher's dogs that chased a bull through the English town of Stamford. This pursuit so pleased the earl of the town that he inaugurated bull baiting as a sport in his domain. Today, the English bulldog makes a fine family pet. The AKC recognizes the breed simply as the bulldog. Related Pet Care Articles. English Bulldogs are up there with Dalmatians and Golden Retrievers for being one of the most easily recognizable dogs around. They have a distinctive look to them, with their most prominent characteristic being their short snouts and chubby faces. English Bulldogs are short - only about a foot tall - and extremely stout. They're tough little guys and were originally bred to fight bulls. These days, they've lost all of their fight and have turned into super lovable dogs. They're very friendly, don't require much exercise, and have a lot to offer for new families. However, they do have a tendency to develop health issues later in life and require some extra attention in certain areas. In this medieval sport, Bulldogs would attack and taunt tethered bulls, eventually pinning the bull down to be executed. Bullbaiting was outlawed in , however, which seemed like the end for the little fighting machines. They were notoriously aggressive, and only bred for a singular purpose - so why keep them as pets? Well, over time, passionate breeders were able to turn these little fighters into the chubby cuddlers we know them as today. They're now one of the more revered breeds of dogs, and often can be found on display at dog shows around the world. Their heads are large and round, with a flat muzzle. They have large, broadly set jaws, and have droopy jowls and skin all around their face. They have a short and thick body, with broad shoulders and stocky legs. They come in a variety of color patterns, though the most well known is white and brown. Despite their fierce appearance and history, they are some of the gentlest dogs around. The English Bulldog personality portrays to be very sociable, especially with people, so you don't have to worry about introducing them to new animals and friends. That said, they are still loyal and brave, making them great watchdogs. They don't scare easy and will do more than just bark if they sense an intruder. The most obvious is its coat color. Blue English Bulldogs have a grey and white coat mix, as opposed to a brown and white coat. The second difference, and the characteristic most people seeking out Blue English Bulldogs are interested in them, is their blue eyes. Blue eyes are rare on just about any dog, but especially when it comes to English Bulldogs, who traditionally have dark brown and black eyes. While this may not seem like a big deal to most, this one change can be very difficult to breed for. And as a result, these dogs are much, much more expensive than traditional English Bulldogs. British bulldog British Bulldogs are the standard English Bulldogs that you think of or see the majority of the time. They have a brown and white coat with dark brown eyes and are the least expensive of the English Bulldog variations. Mini bulldog The Mini Bulldog - sometimes called the Toy Bulldog - is a variation of English Bulldogs that is the same in just about every way, except that they are much smaller. They also tend to have less wrinkly and chubby physiques, which may appeal to certain owners. Unlike other toy breeds, though, the Mini Bulldog is not as small as you might expect. It's somewhere in between the standard English Bulldog and a Chihuahua. So think of them as a slightly smaller Bulldog rather than a tiny one. Mini Bulldogs have been bred since the s, though they didn't really find their footing until the s and s. While the breed became popular, the reduction in health issues has mostly been negligible. They can eat any dog food and be ok, though high-quality dog food is generally recommended. Just make sure that whatever dog food you are feeding them is relevant to their needs puppy, adult, senior, indoor, outdoor, etc. The one thing to keep in mind about English Bulldogs when it comes to their diet is that they can be particularly prone to becoming overweight. This is because they don't exercise as much as other dogs. So, make sure that you aren't ever overfeeding your English Bulldog. Treats are ok to give them during training, although it's easy to overfeed them on treats if you aren't careful. Grooming English Bulldogs are prone to shedding more than most dogs, so you'll need to make an active effort to keep their coats in check. This can be done by giving them a thorough brushing two to three times each week. When shedding is heavier, you may find that a rubber curry brush works best. The wrinkles around your bulldogs face will need to be cleaned periodically, as food, dirt, and moisture can all become trapped there. A cotton swab dipped in hydrogen peroxide is helpful for cleaning their wrinkles. For drying their wrinkles after cleaning, applying cornstarch to moist areas works best. Just be sure that cornstarch is not applied near their eyes. Their nails should be trimmed every two weeks or so as well. Exercise English Bulldogs are not very athletic dogs, so laidback owners will have a nice time relaxing with their Bulldog. That said, like any dog, moderate exercise from time to time is still recommended. Casual walks or an hour or so in the backyard is usually enough exercise for these little guys. It's important to keep in mind, though, that English Bulldogs do not do well in heat. So during the summer, it's best that they stay inside, near an air conditioner if it's particularly hot. English Bulldogs will have a hard time going up and down stairs, so if you have stairs in your home, it might be good to build some kind of ramp or carry them up the stairs yourself. They should also be kept away from pools and bodies of water unless supervised closely since they are not strong swimmers. Training Like most dogs, English Bulldogs are eager to please their owners, so they are reasonably trainable so long as they are started at an early enough age, and checking out our Puppy Growth Chart may help you determine the best age for puppy training. They should also be socialized while they are young as well, or they may have a hard time interacting with new people and pets. Bulldogs love to chew, so they'll need lots of chew toys all throughout their life. However, it is also important to train them to release what they are chewing on command, as they may end up chewing something important to you or harmful for them. English Bulldogs can be very protective of their food, which can cause them to be aggressive as they get older. In order to curb this behavior, train them to get used to people and other animals taking food from their bowl at a young age. Health The primary health concern that most English Bulldog owners will face on a regular basis is overheating. English Bulldogs, due to their size and the way they breathe, are not good at keeping themselves cool. This means that it's your responsibility to keep an eye on them on hot days and keep them indoors during the summertime. If you live in an area of the US that is particularly hot year-round - like the southwest - it might be advisable to consider adopting another breed. English Bulldogs typically weigh around 40 to 50 pounds and live to be between eight to twelve years of age. They should stay indoors most of the time, and only go out for occasional exercise and playtime. They do not do well as outdoor pets because of their sensitivity to heat. While any well air-conditioned home will be suitable for an English Bulldog, they are very prone to overheating. So if you live in a particularly hot or desert-like climate, your Bulldog will end up spending the majority of its time indoors. They do extremely well with families, and in fact, love all of the extra attention and social interaction that comes along with kids. They can be territorial when it comes to other animals, though, as they prefer to have the attention on themselves. Health Issues In English Bulldogs Dry eyes English Bulldogs are notorious for their health issues, with some of the most common being related to their eyes. They often have inadequate tear production to keep their eyes as moist as they should be. This can lead to them developing a blue haze on their eyes, which can damage their vision and cause significant pain. Fortunately, there is a medication that your vet can prescribe to combat this issue. Another issue that Bulldogs are prone to get in their eyes is cherry eye. This is when one of the glands in their eyes starts to protrude, resembling a cherry in the corner of their eye. This will sometimes need to be surgically removed by a vet. Sneezing Sneezing may not sound like a serious health issue - in fact, most of the time it's a normal part of how your dog's body functions. In the case of English Bulldogs, though, they can have challenges related to sneezing and their health. Reverse sneezing, also known as inverted sneezing, is when nasal fluids drip into your Bulldog's soft palate, causing it close. This can be scary for them and cause them to cough and choke. It's generally not serious, however, so the best thing you can do is comfort your dog during a reverse sneezing fit. Brachycephalic Syndrome Brachycephalic syndrome is pretty common among dog breeds with short snouts like the English Bulldog. While the name is a little medical for most of us, the condition itself is pretty straightforward. There can be a few different causes, but the general issue with this syndrome is that your pet's airway is obstructed. This can be due to issues with their nostrils or palate. In mild cases, this just means your English Bulldog will have labored breathing and is likely to snort. In severe cases, though, your dog may have trouble breathing at all. This can require surgery and regular oxygen treatment to resolve. Head shakes Head shaking in English Bulldogs is exactly as the name sounds. Your dog will start to shake their head up and down or side to side over and over again for no apparent reason. While your dog may appear conscious of the movement, it is usually involuntary. This is usually caused by stress as well as low blood sugar. Most breeders recommend giving your dog a spoonful of honey if you notice their head shakes seem uncontrollable. If this doesn't work and you aren't able to come up with a reasonable explanation for your dog's head shakes, there could be a more serious health issue just below the surface. In these cases, take your dog to the vet to figure out what is causing their head shakes. Hip Dysplasia You've likely heard of hip dysplasia in dogs before, as it is relatively common in dogs of all breeds. Hip dysplasia is an inherited condition, so Bulldogs whose parents have hip dysplasia are likely to have hip dysplasia as well. This condition is when your dog's thigh bone doesn't fit snugly into their hip joint, causing it to move improperly. Most English Bulldogs will appear to have hip dysplasia just based on their natural build, which can make an accurate diagnosis difficult. If your bulldog is diagnosed with hip dysplasia , be sure to get a second opinion to confirm the diagnosis. While hip dysplasia is usually an inherited condition, it can also be caused by rapid growth, a sudden change in weight, or long term obesity in your pet. Reasons To Adopt An English Bulldog English Bulldogs are great pets to adopt if you have an easy-going family looking for an extra member. Aside from their health issues, they're pretty low-maintenance and don't require much exercise. English Bulldogs are also quiet for the most part, so you won't have to deal with loud barking in the middle of the night. They're also very loyal as well, making them decent guard dogs for your family. All in all, English Bulldogs are very laidback pets who love to socialize and chill with their owners. If that sounds like you, then an English Bulldog will more than likely make a great addition to your home. The biggest drawback to owning an English Bulldog is the health problems all throughout their life. You'll need to be prepared for this, as well as be an extra vigilant owner who isn't afraid to visit your local vet. While English Bulldogs are able to be kept around other pets, they tend to be pretty possessive of their owners' attention, as well as their food. So bringing an older Bulldog into a family that already has pets or introducing new pets into an older Bulldog's life can sometimes go awry. English Bulldogs are also one of the most popular breeds of dogs in the world, making them on the more expensive side of pet ownership. This upfront cost - coupled with the long-term costs due to their health issues - means you'll need to be willing and able to invest in them over their lifespan. Tips For New Bulldog Owners First and foremost, like any new dog, socialization is extremely important. If your new English Bulldog is a puppy, make sure they spend plenty of time around people and other animals. It also helps to get your puppy used to other people and animals messing with its food early on, as this can prevent them from being territorial and aggressive down the road. And lastly, make sure that you are on top of your Bulldog's health needs. This includes watching for common signs of health issues, visiting your vet regularly, and keeping them clean and healthy. The American Kennel Club ranked it as the fifth-most popular option for owners in .These dogs have a long-standing association with culture in the UK, with many seeing these pups as a national icon. Their fierce determination and persistence are what makes them such an attractive breed to have in the family. Bulldogs have wide shoulders and heads, with thick folds of skin that come around their brow. Their eyes are typically set wider than other dogs, while the muzzle is shorter and placed higher on the face. Then more hanging skin comes under their neck, with dropping lips, pointed teeth, and drool that can feel like it goes on for days. Many of them have a pronounced underbite that gives the individual a unique visual aesthetic and personality. List of the Pros of Owning an English Bulldog 1. People love to interact with these pups because of their personality. English Bulldogs are excellent guard dogs. These pups put up a mean fight even when they weigh less than 40 pounds. It will not hesitate to leap into action whenever it or you feel threatened. If you have children at home, then your English Bulldog will protect its pack at all costs. This breed loves to be around children. There are exceptions to every rule, but most English Bulldogs love to hang out with kids who know how to treat them right. Most are even tolerant of a little over-exuberance if you can get them out of a stimulating atmosphere after a few minutes. Most families enjoy having these doggos around because of this trait, so it is something to consider if your kids love the idea of bringing a pup home. You are going to laugh with an English Bulldog around. English Bulldogs are natural clowns. It might start with their appearance, but this trait goes through every element of their personality. You might get a funny facial expression, a clumsy effort to get on the couch with you, or something more dramatic. They are natural pranksters that love to pull off a good joke, but most of the time they end up doing something to themselves instead. If you need to unwind after a long day at work, coming home to an English Bulldog is a lot of fun. Spending a few minutes with one is an almost certain way to elevate your mood. Their temperament is friendly and patient. The English Bulldog might have a reputation for being stubborn, but breeders have been working to take this trait out of the breed over several generations. They form strong bonds with their pack, including other animals that you might have as pets. List of the Cons of Owning an English Bulldog 1. English Bulldogs have a slow maturation process. Life with an English Bulldog presents a lot of challenges. Only a handful of individual pups do so before their second birthday. Despite this fact, the average lifespan of this breed is relatively short, often in the year range. You can see some of the signs of aging as soon as the age of 5, which means you have a short window to maximize your time with your pup. If you want a dog that will grow up with your children, this might not be the breed to choose. The modern English Bulldog might look like a tough character, but their body cannot keep up with the tasks that their ancestors used to perform. Many English Bulldogs suffer from heart problems. The United Kingdom performed a survey on English Bulldogs and the reasons for their death in .The results showed a median lifespan of only 6 years, 3 months. The leading cause was related to their heart, which was closely followed by cancer. About 1 in 10 dogs died of old age, and they were able to make it up to the age of .Some dogs can develop cysts that form between their toes. Some individual English Bulldogs can develop interdigital cysts. You can treat this condition with veterinarian help, but it can cause a lot of discomfort for the dog when they develop. Additional problems involve respiratory distress, a protrusion of the inner eyelid, and allergic reactions. Most owners will need to manage one ongoing health concern over the lifespan of their doggo because of the health issues their unique body shape causes. The health of your pup relies on their genetic makeup, so it is almost a necessity to work with a local breeder experienced with these pups to get the best possible result. Their high spirits can lead to a lot of unwanted behaviors. English Bulldog puppies tend to be highly spirited, which means they have a tendency to get into trouble more often than other breeds. Chewing is their primary habit, especially when they are trying to cope with boredom. These dogs mellow out more as they reach adulthood. If you adopt a young puppy, then you could be on a two-year ride with this potential disadvantage. The only way to get out of this issue is to have someone at home most of the time with your doggo. English Bulldogs are not athletic dogs. If you have an English Bulldog at home, then this dog is not going to leap into the air to catch a ball or a Frisbee. Once you get into the adult years, their short legs and compressed air passageways lead to overheating issues. If you go on a long walk with this breed, it is imperative that you bring some water for them to drink. Once they reach adulthood, the English Bulldog prefers to rest more than they want to be active. If you want a snuggle dog, then this is the breed for you. Families with an active lifestyle might want to look at some other options. These dogs tend to be the antithesis of what a pup with those behaviors should be. Hot weather will produce the sticky substance that flies all over the house. Then there is the gas. English Bulldogs have an extraordinary amount of flatulence that will stink up whatever room they are in during the day. Be prepared for a smelly attack even when you have some snuggle time lined up for your pup. Because of their facial skin folds, these dogs often struggle with yeast infections because food particles get stuck between them. This issue applies to the back end of the pup as well since they can get some feces stuck in the rear folds. Since these pups have virtually no ability to groom themselves, it is up to you to ensure that they stay clean. The price of an English Bulldog can be problematic for some families. Most English Bulldog puppies are born by C-section because of the shape of their skull. That means you already have a higher cost to consider compared to other breeds. There might be artificial insemination charges, additional veterinarian appointments, and other care tasks that drive the price upward. Conclusion If you want a dog that brings a lot of personality to your family, then an English Bulldog is the perfect addition to your home. It adopts more of a sedentary, gamer-style attitude toward life that involves sitting next to your chair. After evaluating the pros and cons of owning an English Bulldog, you can better decide if this breed will fit into your home.

The English Cream Golden Retriever is not a separate dog breed from the Golden Retriever ; it is simply a rarer coat color variation. As they are still standard Golden Retrievers, they are recognized by the AKC and other canine organizations and can be registered. An English Cream Golden Retriever has all the same traits as any other Golden Retriever; they are one of the most popular dog breeds and tend to be open, friendly, and make great family pets. One of the facts about Golden Retrievers is that they are considered one of the friendliest dog breeds. As long as they are socialized and trained, Goldens tend to get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. They are even known for being open and friendly with strangers. As one of the kid-friendly dog breeds , Golden Retrievers love attention. These dogs tend to be energetic, full of personality, and are devoted to their families. They also tend to be excitable, which means they can be prone to barking. Training your dog to stop barking early on can help curb this habit and help prevent it from becoming a nuisance. Due to their friendly, gentle nature and intelligence, Goldens can often be found working as service, therapy, or search and rescue dogs. English Cream Golden Retrievers are highly adaptable dogs. Their high energy and exuberance make them better suited for homes with yards where they can run. They can adapt to apartment living, but you will need to dedicate a lot of time every day to ensure they get enough attention, mental stimulation, and exercise. Goldens fare well in most climates. As with any dog breed, they are sensitive to heat and extreme cold. Because they bond so closely with their families and are one of the most affectionate dog breeds , they do not like to spend long periods of time alone. Some potential health concerns to be aware of in an English Cream Golden Retriever can include canine cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy, hip dysplasia, and elbow dysplasia. Good breeding practices reduce the risk of these health issues and make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. The national breed club recommends hip and elbow evaluations, an NCL DNA test, an ophthalmologist evaluation, and a cardiac exam at a minimum. English Cream Golden Retrievers are intelligent and eager to please. This makes them highly trainable dogs that are a good fit for owners of all experience levels. Not only are they one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners , but they also tend to excel at obedience competitions and other dog sports. As one of the smartest dog breeds , Golden Retrievers can get bored easily. Because they pick up things quickly, they can get bored with too much repetition in training. If your dog has mastered basic commands , move on to other activities or more advanced commands. Anything you learn will help and will only strengthen the bond you are building with your puppy. Plus, there are several other benefits of puppy training classes including socialization. English Cream Goldens may have a lighter-colored coat, but they still have the classic longer Golden Retriever coat that will shed a big year-round and heavier as the seasons change. You will want to bathe them as needed and get your Golden professionally groomed a few times a year, especially as the seasons change. Trimming nails once or twice a month keeps them from growing too long. Weekly ear checks, along with careful cleanings as needed, can help prevent ear infections. Daily tooth brushing is ideal to keep tartar buildup at bay. This, plus cleanings at the vet when needed, is good dental care for dogs and can help prevent painful dental diseases later in life. Golden Retrievers are known for being high-energy dogs. Like Labrador Retrievers , they also tend to have an extended puppyhood. They do tend to calm down a little as they grow into adulthood, but will still have a lot of energy. Daily walks plus some playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough to keep this dog happy and healthy. Goldens tend to be athletic and versatile dogs. So, once they are done growing and the vet has cleared them for higher-impact activities, you can take them running with you, play frisbee, go hiking, train for dog sports, and more. As one of the most active dog breeds , you will likely run out of energy before they do and they will likely be up for even more activity if you are. An English Cream Golden Retriever generally lives for years on average. Golden Retrievers are one of the dog breeds of famous dogs. On your first visit to the vet, the vet will suggest a range of tests and health screenings for your dog. This will include the basics such as physical examination, fecal sample tests, vaccines and parasite prevention treatments. The vet will request further testing and schedule follow-up visits based on the test results. Ideally, a large breed dog like the English Cream Retriever is ready for sterilization when it is closer to 12 months of age. Some veterinary clinics will perform the procedure for a lower cost without any post-op care. So be mindful of what you choose. Note that spaying or neutering your dog is an optional cost. So you can choose to do it when you want or not do it all. But performing this surgery can prevent any reproductive-related issues from developing. Veterinary Care During the Adult Years Visiting the vet during the first year to ensure your puppy is alright and returning to the vet only when your dog gets sick again is not how proper veterinary care works. You have to commit your time and finance to veterinary care. This will ensure your dog is maintained in a healthy state. For an average dog in good health condition, the vet will recommend around follow-up visits throughout the year. These visits will cover the basics like physical examinations, vaccine updates and any required blood work. Depending on the findings, your vet may request further testing if required. Pet Insurance Pet insurance is one of the most essential investments you make for your pet. Pet insurance will cover major medical bills due to emergencies and expensive medical procedures. Many companies offer affordable and extensive plans for accident and illness coverage. Some even extend to complete health coverage which will cost much heavier. No matter what breed your dog is. Grooming Cost English Cream retrievers are easy to groom dogs. Every months, it is recommended that you get a professional grooming session to trim your Retrievers coat at the ears, feet, neck and tail to keep them smart. Training Cost English Cream retrievers are sociable and friendly dogs who are relatively easy to train. Although they have a friendly nature, we recommend professional training sessions for house manners, potty training, basic behavior and command training during the early stages. English Cream Retrievers rarely need private sessions. They are ideal for dogs who lack socialization around other dogs. Other Potential Costs Apart from the basic costs listed above, it would be best if you were also prepared to face additional costs in raising your English Cream Retriever. You may not necessarily be in a situation where you have to incur some of these expenses. But at the same time, some of these costs are unavoidable in certain circumstances. Microchip Microchipping your dog comes in super handy if your dog happens to get lost. When your dog is found and returned to a shelter, a vet can easily identify the owner using the microchip scanner. Dog License A dog license serves a similar purpose as a microchip. Dog Walking Your English Cream retriever will definitely benefit from exercise as they are energetic and playful dogs. So on days, you cannot take your dog for a walk, you can hire a dog walker. If you expect to use this service in the long run, you can multiply and add the respective cost to the annual basic total cost. Traveling If you want your dog to accompany you on your travels, there are options for that too. Many airlines, train companies and hotels do allow the facility of accommodating your pet with you. But this will no doubt come at a hefty price. So check ahead of time and plan your travels accordingly. Training tools dog owners must have for their dogs:. As the name suggests, these dogs are more popular in the UK. Because of their rarity and the specificity of the bloodline, these dogs are very expensive. There are some outliers on either end of this range. This is far more than most other breeds costs. This covers everything, including food, grooming, preventative vet care, and microchipping. Optional things are not included, like pet insurance and dog walking. Your costs can vary widely depending on where you get your dog from. When you compare this to a breeder that charges thousands, the huge savings are pretty obvious. Occasionally, you may be able to find these dogs advertised on places like Craigslist. However, there are many problems with going this route. However, they may occasionally. Generally, dogs on Craigslist are not produced by breeders; this causes a variety of different problems. Firstly, the adult dogs are usually not health tested, which means that they may pass on a variety of different conditions to their puppies. Secondly, most of the puppies do not receive the proper health care. As you might imagine, this can be an obvious problem. Some of these puppies are produced by puppy mills. These focus on producing as many puppies as possible or as cheaply as possible. Typically, this translates into taking many different shortcuts, such as not giving the dogs any medical care and spending very little time socializing with them. As you might imagine, puppies from these breeders are not particularly healthy or well-behaved. Most have never been in a home before their adoption. Some puppy mills produce a number of different breeds, so you might even end up with a mix instead of a pure-bred English Cream Retriever. Your puppy might be a Goldendoodle or similar cross. Getting a puppy from a rescue These dogs are much too rare to be common at rescues. There is simply no other place to find them. The majority of these breeders have contracts with buyers that require them to return the dog if they can no longer take care of it. Therefore, the dogs never end up in an animal shelter. The cost is sometimes based on the amount of vet care that particular dog had to receive. Puppies are usually more expensive than adults, as they tend to be adopted faster. Getting a puppy from a breeder While getting a puppy from a breeder can be expensive, this is mostly because you get a lot with your purchase of the puppy. Most puppies receive their first vaccinations and vet exam before being adopted. Quite a few puppies also come with some basic training before they are adopted out. This may include house training and simple commands. Some breeders do this themselves, while others hire a trainer. All of these extras add to the cost of your puppy. You may end up spending less on these puppies overall when you factor in all of these savings. Plus, many breeders also get their dogs health tested. This lowers the chance that an adult dog will pass on genetic issues to their puppies, resulting in a healthier litter. Costs of health tests One of the main reasons puppies from breeders are so expensive is due to health testing. A big factor in the cost is geographical location, as well as whether or not the dog needs sedation. This issue is common in all large dog breeds, especially retrievers. Flat-Coated Retrievers and Labradors also often show hip dysplasia. Many breeders also do testing for progressive retinal atrophy. This causes the eye to break down over time, which eventually leads to blindness. It simply depends on how the disease progresses. Other eye tests may be done as well, depending on the particular breeder. Their costs are very similar to other Golden Retrievers. A large portion of this will be the supplies your puppy needs when you bring them home, such as a dog bed and bowl. Of course, puppies also need quite a bit of vet care and training as well. All preventative vet care is included in this estimate, as is food, toys, grooming, and other regular costs. This includes all the preventative care your dog will need, like a physical exam, vaccinations, and basic blood tests. Puppies will need to visit the vet more often during their first year to receive all of their vaccinations. The first visit is usually around eight weeks and may be covered by your breeder. If this is the case, you can likely expect to pay on the lower end of the range for vet bills. Adults will only need one preventative appointment a year, but more work will need to be done at this single appointment. Therefore, you probably will pay about the same for adults and puppies. Often, vets will recommend certain diagnostic tests on older adults to catch potential health problems early. Food and toys Because these pups grow to be large dogs , they will require more food. Older dogs are simply larger and eat more, hence the increased cost as your dog ages. This covers high-quality food with plenty of meat and protein. You can save a bit of money by purchasing lower-quality foods, but this is not recommended. Just like people, dogs are what they eat. Because these dogs are quite active, you will be spending quite a bit on toys. While you may save a little bit upfront by purchasing lower-quality toys, your dog will typically be able to tear those up quite quickly. Training costs While these dogs are easy to train, we still recommend taking them to a professional — at least in the beginning. This is likely all that your dog needs. This breed rarely needs private lessons. Private lessons are great for dogs that cannot be around other canines due to a lack of socialization. However, the aim is always to get them into a group class. This breed is very sociable, so they usually have no problem being around other dogs. We highly recommend skipping the private classes, therefore. This assumes your dog is okay being around other canines, of course. Factors influencing the price These dogs vary a bit in pricing. They are all quite expensive, but some are more expensive than others. If a dog is more expensive, it is likely because they have more champions in their bloodline and will perform better in the show ring. Puppies with a direct lineage back to England are also usually more expensive. The amount of training and socialization a puppy also receives matters. Some breeders will charge a few thousand dollars extra for training — which you may or may not be able to opt-out of. All breeders socialize their puppies within their homes. But some will provide more socialization than others. Medical expenses also play a role. If the puppy has already received their first vaccinations, then you will likely pay extra for that puppy. However, you will not have to pay for these vaccinations, so you may end up spending less in the long run. Health testing can be expensive, so these puppies will likely be more expensive as well. Price considerations These dogs can be extremely expensive to adopt. For this reason, your main budgeting will be towards the actual price of a puppy. However, you should also budget appropriately for the annual price of a puppy. The bottom line Due to their rarity, this breed is very expensive to adopt. This includes annual costs and one-time purchases for the puppy. This will cost you a few more thousand dollars a year. Be sure you budget appropriately for this breed before you decide to purchase one. Author: Kristin Kristin was born in Tennessee and currently lives there with her husband and children.
