Our adoption fees vary. Each biography will specifically list the adoption fee. Those interested in meeting the dog can come out to our meet and greet event. We no longer do application approval onsite. Anyone adopting has been previously approved and set up to meet prior to the event. She has been an absolutely lovely pup around kids of all sizes and ages, dogs, and cats as well! She will make her future forever home so lucky. Below is a report from her foster. She adapted right away to our routine. We get up around and let the dogs out to do their business. She gets breakfast around AM and is a great eater. She then plays in the yard for a few hours before taking a long nap on the couch. She has dinner around PM and then goes outside one more time before bed. She has not had an accident in our home since we have had her. Mrs Maisel loves to play but is respectful when other dogs need a break from go go go energy. She is calm when meeting members of the household and when on walks and responds very well to a no command. She would also do well in a home with runners and hikers, her tongue hangs out of her mouth after a good long play or activity session. Mrs Maisel is an option for a home who has had prior experience with dogs, especially those who have prior experience with larger breed dogs. If there are children in the home, they should be over the age of 8 and knock-over proof as Mrs Maisel can get excited and play bowling alley with little ones. We have answers. Are Weimaraners Good Family Dogs? Is the Silver Labrador a Result of Inbreeding? Yes, he is. The Silver Labrador is very uncommon back in the day. Thus, breeders needed to breed their dogs with their close relatives to produce Silver Lab puppies. Whilst this practice of breeding Silver Labs is done to preserve these dogs, it can cause health problems within the breed. However, the inbreeding waned as the population of Silver Labradors grew. But reputable Silver Lab breeders do not condemn this breeding practice. According to research, Silver Labradors have 7 distinct bloodlines. This means they have a varied gene pool. Hence, the possible development of health problems due to inbreeding has lower chances of occurring in the past. According to breed standards, Labs should have brown- or hazel-coloured eyes. On the other hand, Silver Labradors are born with blue eyes. When a Silver Lab puppy reaches 8 months to 1 year old, his blue eye colour will gradually change to light yellow. But in rare cases, some eyes of Silver Labrador puppies stay blue. Others may also possess light green eyes instead of light yellow. Is the Silver Labrador Friendly and Trainable? The Silver Lab temperament is similar to the traditional Labrador Retriever. He is an extremely friendly family pet. The Silver Labrador is the life of the party, and his cheerfulness is infectious. The Silver Lab strives to keep his human companions happy by performing silly antics or cuddling with them. With proper socialisation at a young age , they will learn how to play and interact with children and other animals. The Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular dog breeds for its friendly personality and high intelligence. Silver Labs possess the smarts too. Silver Labs can quickly learn commands as they are eager to please their owners. By keeping training sessions short and rewarding them with praises and treats , they will do their best to carry out whatever you ask of them. Silver Labs are high-energy family dogs. They need at least 1 hour of physical and mental exercise. They are originally bred for hunting and retrieving, just like their cousins, the Golden Retrievers. Jogging, playing fetch, agility training , and obstacle course are great activities to try out with him. Consider taking the Silver Labrador out for a swim once in a while, as the breed is a natural swimmer and has an innate fondness for water. The Silver Labradors have straight and thick weather-resistant double coats. It protects them from harsh weather and insulates their bodies. With that said, Silver Labs should don doggy coats and booties if the temperature drops below 20 degrees Fahrenheit -6 Celsius. They should also be kept in an air-conditioned or cool area if the heat rises above 90 degrees Fahrenheit 32 Celsius. The Silver Labrador sheds most of the time moderately. However, it becomes heavy around spring and fall. Arm yourself with a vacuum cleaner to remove any loose or dead hair that comes off when brushing. Bathing the Silver Lab should be done sparsely , preferably once a month or as needed. Tooth brushing is advised to be done daily. Ear cleaning and nail trimming can be done once a week. The Silver Lab is a medium-sized dog. An adult Silver Lab will need around 1,—2, calories per day. He should be given around 3 cups of high-quality dog food every day. What Is the Lifespan of the Silver Labrador? The life expectancy of the Silver Labrador ranges from 10 to 12 years. With proper care and love, he can outlive these ages. Thus, it is important to provide Silver Labs with a stress-free home, adequate exercise, balanced meals, regular grooming, and human interaction. Do Silver Labs have health issues? Yes, they have. Colour dilution alopecia is a prevalent concern in many Silver Labrador owners. It is a hair-loss condition that occurs in dogs that possess the colour dilution gene. This can be treated through antibiotics. Another common health issue in Silver Labrador is hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia. Both are bone and joint problems that cause excruciating pain and lameness. These conditions are not life-threatening and can be cured through medication or surgery. Yes, Silver Labradors are rare in most countries as it is considered a new colour variation in the Labrador Retriever breed. Silver Labs may have become quite common in the United States, but they are still difficult to find compared to black, brown, or yellow Labrador Retrievers. Be sure to buy only from a reputable Silver Lab breeder. Life Span Did You Know? One of the facts about Labrador Retrievers is that they come in many colors. Silver Labrador Retrievers, or Silver Labs, are relatively new compared to the other Lab coat colors. Contrary to their Yellow, Chocolate, and Black Lab cousins, which have recorded sightings from and before, Silver Labs have only cropped up since .There was some heated debate over their authenticity, as many breeders believed the silver tint appeared from outside the breed. A diluting factor in coat color dominance traits is responsible for the silver hue — something that is also present in Charcoal and Champagne Labs as well. At any rate, Silver Labrador Retrievers are regal, loyal, and friendly Labradors that have a lot of energy and a lot of love to give! Silver Labs are curious and playful dogs. Their curiosity will often get the better of them and they may wander off in search of adventure if they are off-leash. Labrador Retrievers are known for their gentle, friendly dispositions and good natures. Well-socialized Labs tend to get along with children, other dogs, and even other pets and strangers. Because of this they make the ideal family dog and are one of the kid-friendly dog breeds. Despite being one of the most active dog breeds , Silver Labrador Retrievers are highly adaptable. They prefer bigger spaces to stretch their legs and explore. As one of the sturdy dog breeds for outdoor adventures , they will often take an outside adventure over an inside one any day. But, they will also just be happy to be spending time with you. They do well in most climates, but are sensitive to heat and extreme cold. Silver Labs are one of the most affectionate dog breeds. They are happiest when they are spending time with their favorite humans, so they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a Silver Labrador Retriever can include elbow dysplasia , hip dysplasia, hereditary myopathy, heart disease, cataracts, and progressive retinal atrophy. A condition called exercise-induced collapse EIC has a genetic link and can occur in young adult Labradors. Good breeding practices and the health of the parents make a big difference in the health of Silver Lab puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a large, deep-chested dog breed, the Silver Labrador Retriever is at a higher risk for bloat. Silver Labs are one of the smartest dog breeds. They pick up on things quickly and are eager to please. Despite their energy and getting bored easily, they are still a great fit for dog owners of any experience level. Labrador Retrievers are considered one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners. Silver Labrador Retrievers have short, water-resistant fur in two layers. Because of this dense double coat that protects them from the cold, and being one of the dog breeds that tend to love water , they may try to go for a swim regardless of the season. They shed year-round and more heavily twice a year when seasons change. Plus, your Lab will love spending the time with you. Trimming their nails once or twice monthly keeps them from growing too long. Regularly checking ears and cleaning them as needed can help prevent ear infections. Proper dental care for dogs , like daily brushing and cleanings at the vet when needed, is important to prevent the tartar buildup that causes painful dental diseases later in life. Silver Labrador Retrievers need a lot of daily activity to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for this dog. Although they are high-energy dogs, Silver Labs will tend to mellow out a little bit as they get older. Labrador Retrievers tend to have an extended puppyhood and maintain that puppy-like energy until they are around years old. Swimming is a great low-impact activity. Once your Lab puppy is cleared for more intense activity, you can try a lot of different activities with them. In addition to being one of the dog breeds that make the best service dogs , Labs are also athletic and versatile dogs that tend to be a good fit for a wide range of activities. Fully-grown Silver Labrador Retrievers usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Silver Labs generally live for years on average. Labrador Retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds used as guide dogs, therapy dogs, and search and rescue dogs. They are also commonly found working as police or military dogs. They are even one of the best dog breeds for farms! Featured Silver Labrador Retriever Article.

I am short and stocky with a personality to match. I seem to like lots of different people. I am at a stage when I get excited, I urinate a lot. With consistency and confidence in my new owners, I should outgrow this behavior. I have not been around a lot of children. Pending observed interaction with a family, I should do well with children 8 years and older. I may protect my food from other dogs, which is also something which can be worked with. I love playing with other dogs and should match with one in my new home, pending a meet and greet. I have not been tested with cats at this time. I am doing better on a leash, but the shelter is a busy and at times loud place. In a home setting, I will gain more confidence with leash walking. I may learn to potty on leash with lots of time and encouragement. I would love a fenced-in yard and may require it pending your location, previous experience, or other plans for containment. If you are interested in being my adopter, please visit my shelter's website and complete the adoption application that is available there! Alfalfa in particular is high in energy and is an excellent source of vitamins and minerals. When properly cured, alfalfa is the best of the legume hays from a nutrient standpoint. It has the most feed value of all the perennial pasture forages. Alfalfa is used as for horses, dairy cows, beef cattle, sheep, chickens, turkeys and other farm animals. Nutritional Quality of Alfalfa HayWith its high nutritional quality, Alfalfa hay is one of the best and most popular horse feed varieties available. Its high protein, calcium and vitamin content make it especially useful in balancing rations for brood mares and young growing horses. Its palatability makes it especially popular for horses that are finicky about eating. Harvesting Alfalfa Hay Alfalfa hay is harvested starting in early spring in southern states such as Arizona, and usually begins in May in northern Pacific Northwest states. Fields are cut several times each season, up to eight times in warmer growing regions. Nutrition is at its highest when Alfalfa is cut pre-bloom. This indicates that nutrition is maintained in the leaf and stem of the plant, instead of moving into the flower when the head is fully developed. Nutrition plays a large role in the quality and grading of Alfalfa, in addition to texture and color qualities that vary according to specific livestock requirements. Feeding horses Alfalfa reduces or even eliminates the need for supplements which often have a laxative effect. Our commitment to supplying high quality Alfalfa year round gives horses a consistent and safe supply of protein. Do All Horses Need Alfalfa? Alfalfa is most beneficial for horses with high energy needs due to their moderate to high level of exertion. Alfalfa may provide too much energy, protein and nutrients for horses that are only occasionally exercised. Those horses that spend less than five hours a week performing low to moderate intensity activities, such as showing or recreational riding, do not require the high levels of nutrients that high quality Alfalfa supplies. A feed program for recreational horses should limit Alfalfa and include forage with high chew time, such as Timothy hay to combat idleness. Alfalfa Hay for Animal Feed. Oklahoma City: .It is a medium to large-sized dog very well known for its strength, trainability, and intelligence. Discover more about our German Shepherd puppies for sale below! Breed History In the 19th century, Shepherds bred all kinds of dogs mainly to herd and guard flocks. Thus, the dogs needed to display a high level of intelligence, extra normal strength, resilience, courage and bravery, a keen sense of smell, and trainability qualities, etc. These mongrel combinations provided dog breeds that could efficiently guard and herd flocks but differed in appearance and ability, from one locality to another. Temperament German Shepherd dogs are well known to be highly inquisitive which makes them excellent for rescue mission training. The German Shepherd has a noble character and shows very high levels of loyalty to its owners. Environment The German shepherd can survive in all types of environment; their thick furriness makes them better prepared for cold climates. Exercise German Shepherds are considered extremely playful and active. These breeds spend half of their daily routine with activities. The German Shepherd is popularly known as an athletic natured dog and requires a good dose of daily exercise to keep up muscle tone, build and development. If improperly exercised the German Shepherd has been known to become frustrated and exhibit undesirable behaviors. Grooming The German Shepherd requires an occasional brushing, as this helps with removing loose hair from its fur. The German Shepherd sheds fur once or twice a year and in this time the breed requires a lot of soft brushing. This can be done using a soft to medium bristle brush. The German Shepherd occasionally requires that its nails are trimmed off when they grow too long, however, some breeds instinctually file their nails against any hard surface that can be fine. Excessive nail growth can cause much pain and even lead to structural concerns. In choosing a German Shepherd breed you must ask yourself what it is you want in a dog and what kind of person are you? Her kennel was founded on Grand Victor GV Harrigan, whom many claims were the greatest shepherd that ever lived. From the same lines that produced GV Harrigan, gave rise to the Heidelberg German Shepherd Dogs, as well as, many of the other highly regarded top producing kennels in the United States. Unfortunately, many of these other kennels went another direction in their breeding in the late s and early s by producing a more extreme show dog type of German Shepherd that is over angulated. In addition, these top kennels in many cases disregarded temperament. Our guidelines to breeding the Heidelberg German Shepherd Dogs are, first and foremost, temperament, followed by health, and finally, show quality and appearance. More than champions later and several thousands of satisfied owners of the Heidelberg type of German Shepherd Dogs, we continue breeding Heidelberg German Shepherds that are world-renowned. We continue to use the Heidelberg name because we do not breed these dogs for our ego to have some contrivance of our last name to label our dogs with and to collect accolades. Rather we breed these shepherds for the future generations that will enjoy and love these wonderful German Shepherd Dogs, as we do, long after us. Why change the name? American vs. European: One Disclaimer: Before reading, the following note that we are providing only anecdotal evidence that we have witnessed with our eyes. Throughout the years, we have observed that the biggest cowards and least trainable dogs consistently are the so-called import German shepherd dogs. For example, when the owner brings their import out for boarding, the import will have its hackle up and be extremely aggressive towards staff, even to the point of snapping at our staff. This aggression is unfounded, and these shepherds are potential liabilities for their owners. However, after the owner leaves, these same dogs become cowards. They consistently refuse to socialize with other dogs or staff and coward in the corners of their kennels. This type of temperament would not protect their owners if a real threat materialized. For example, while these dogs are being aggressive towards staff, a quick step towards them would send them cowering behind their owners. This is not the correct German shepherd temperament. Keystone German shepherds are not aggressive towards strangers and do not coward from threats. Our dogs are aloof toward strangers until they learn that they are friendly, in which time they will readily accept the stranger as a family friend. Likewise, if the stranger proves to be a threat to family or property, our shepherds may provide a warning growl. At this point, if the bad actor does not cease, but continues with their aggressive behavior, they may be met with a bite. At this time, the perpetrator will again be allowed to stop with their aggressive actions; however, our shepherds may meet additional aggressive acts with increasing aggression. This is the correct protective temperament of the German shepherd dogs. This natural, innate protective behavior, by our dogs, is not learned and cannot be trained, and it may keep you from being sued. The correct shepherd temperament is discerning and controlled. Note: all breeds of dogs can become liabilities if untrained or improperly trained. The European or import shepherd purposely is bred to be high-strung and restless. They breed these dogs to be high energy translated as high maintenance for the very demanding sport of Schutzhund and police work. This is a very legitimate pursuit, and necessary for the production of police and military dogs. However, let us be realistic, for every puppy produced that would excel at this sport or as a working dog, these breeders produce several cull dogs for which they have to find homes. Some of these breeders sell these cull dogs to the unsuspecting public. Invariably they will sell these dogs to families that are ill-equipped to deal with a nervous, high-strung dog that must be occupied or they become destructive. These are the very same dogs that we see time again being boarded at our kennels. Our shepherds while capable at excelling at Schutzhund and police work are even-tempered. They are bred to be relaxed and calm. Our shepherds are happy to lie down next to you while you watch television or if asked to herd livestock or play fetch. They are focused on you and your activities. This is what we believe is the correct shepherd temperament, which is a pleasure to live with. We had a European breeder come out to our kennels to try to show us how superior his European lines were to our American lines. He brought out his prize stud. This dog was released from his crate and took off running around our property. After minutes of this man trying to catch his prize import to demonstrate him to us, we told him that we had to get back to work. The man finally caught his dog and left. We never saw him again. Our dogs never run off from us. Our dogs are true shepherds and as such, they are herding dogs. They herd us by observing us, they love us, and we become their sole purpose in life. For example, while at dog shows, we exercise our dogs off-leash several times a day. We usually find a big open field so that they can run and play. A competitor once asked us why we would take the chance of losing one of our valuable show dogs by letting them off the lead. I responded that we are not taking any risks because if our dogs wander too far, all we have to do is call their name and they come to us at a full run. Our competitors exercise their dogs at the shows in small pens because their dogs will run off and not return. We had another Schutzhund trainer come out to purchase one of our puppies. He had seen one of our dogs at a Schutzhund event and he was quite impressed with its working abilities. European: Two American vs. European: Two However, because of years of propaganda about how inept American lines are, he could not bring himself to purchase one of our puppies. He left our place muttering that these dogs cannot be this good. The poor man wanted one of our puppies so bad, but he could not let go of his incorrect biases. I also suspect that the man was afraid of the grief that he would receive from his schutzhund friends if he showed up with one of our American bred, German shepherd Dogs. We had another misguided import breeder challenge our dogs and their temperaments. He asked us if he could come out and perform temperament tests on our puppies. We obliged him. He ran through all his tests with our puppies passing all of his tests. Perplexed and frustrated, the man picked up a large stainless steel bowl and threw it down as hard as he could on concrete in the middle of the six-week-old puppies. The puppies reacted as any normal living thing would by running a few steps from the loud noise and then turning to investigate. They were scared; your dogs have terrible temperaments. Structurally many shepherds have been bred to be deficient. Both European and American lines have their specific problems. Many American lines have been bred to have severe angulations and slopes to their backs, that forces these dogs to run on their hocks or to flip their hocks in and out of their body line to provide leg clearance while trotting. This can be readily viewed by watching a dog trot away from you. The correct motion when viewing a dog in a trot moving away from you is that the rear legs and hocks should move in straight lines in an economy of motion. We breed our dogs to be structurally correct, and thus movement is fluid without wasted motion or energy. Likewise, many imports have been bred to have an imbalance with strong shoulders with weak and underdeveloped rear legs. These dogs are two-wheel drive only. You can see this best when they are on a lead and digging in, thus driving with their front legs almost dragging their rear legs. This has been taken to the extreme with some of the import lines, which can be best seen with what is termed as a roached back. This roached back results in a downward tilt of the pelvis and curved spine, which weakens the rear legs and negating a fluid trot. Most all modern imports and European dogs have very short and choppy strides. This short and choppy stride results in very inefficient movement. These dogs would be poor herding dogs and would quickly tire much quicker than shepherds with correct and efficient movement. Take note of the heads of many of the modern European and import shepherds. Due to the shorter snout, the jaw of many imports was forced to be wider because teeth have not changed in size or number It is very difficult genetically to change teeth the jaws and head of imports have become wider to accommodate all the teeth. Notice also the lack of leg bone thickness on many of the import shepherds. Many of these dogs have a petite bone structure, which is undesirable for herding or working dogs. The bones need to be substantial and strong to avoid breakage in the field or while bringing down a criminal. A dog with a broken leg cannot perform its job. Nature does not make mistakes over the long-term. Compare shapes and angles by examining several pictures of the wolf compared to the import and our dogs. Then examine and compare pictures of our German Shepherd Dogs vs. The difference will become evident in these visual comparisons. Do not buy into the propaganda that imports are inherently superior to all American lines. This propaganda was started as a sales technique to get unsuspecting purchasers to pay more for inferior and sometimes extremely ugly shepherds. If examined and investigated with an open and intelligent mind, you will come to the conclusion that our Heidelberg German Shepherd Dogs are superior in temperament, structure, and natural beauty than most all other lines and types of shepherds whether European, imported, or American. What is beautiful? Researchers have attempted to define beauty. The overwhelming consensus in defining what is beautiful and aesthetically pleasing to the eye was found to be in Form and Function, Balance, and Symmetry of the object considered. The Heidelberg shepherd meets these definitions of beauty. Few scenes in life are as invigorating and stimulating as watching a Heidelberg German Shepherd Dog running in a flying trot across an open grassy field. The opposite is true! Our German shepherds are loving, sweet, and gentle dogs, especially around small children. Supplements and Supplies We offer everything that is needed to bring home a new puppy from toys, collars, to water and feeding bowls. The prices and quality are exceptional and, we are likely less expensive than big wholesale houses such as PetsMart because our overhead is lower. In addition, we provide one of the best vitamin supplements available. Our Pure Total Vitamin Supplement meets the micro and macro-nutritional requirements needed by your growing German Shepherd Dog, puppy or adult. These nutrients cannot be obtained from the diet alone. Have you seen puppies eat dirt or grass? They do this because their nutritional requirements are not being met. Our supplement contains diatomaceous earth, brewers yeast, active yeast enzymes, vitamins B complexes, E, and C, kelp, flax seed meal, chicken liver powder, brewers yeast, selenimum, complex amino acids, Omega oils, and fishmeal. We also provide the purest contaminant free cod liver oil available in one-quart bottles that will last approximately 3 months. Our cod liver oil is human grade and many of customers use it for their own nutritional regime. Keystone Store Vaccinations We start vaccinations on our puppies at six weeks using Duramune Vaccines. Our first series of shots include distemper and parvo. At six and nine weeks we vaccinate for Distemper, Parvo live and killed , Adenovirus Type 2, and parainfluenza, and corona. At 12 weeks we vaccinate for all the above including 4-Leptospira Canicola — Icterohagiae Bacterin. This same shot is repeated at 16 and 20 weeks and then again at 6 months. Since following this vaccination regime, we have not had any puppies get sick. We also inoculate for rabies between four and six months followed by an annual booster then biannually after age three. Oklahoma rabies is required annually for the first two shots and then bi-annually. We sell puppy shots and adult shots for a fraction of the cost of going to a veterinarian clinic. Our vaccines are always fresh and up to date. For example, we were one of the first kennels to receive the new vaccines that protect against the new strain of Canine parvovirus type 2 CPV.Since we are not veterinarians it is illegal in Oklahoma for us to administer shots to dogs not owned or co-owned by us. Our vaccines are easily administered intramuscularly by injecting the needle quickly into the meaty part of the rear hip. We usually have an assistant hold the puppy in the air with the rear leg hanging loosely relaxed and the puppy does not even know it has received an inoculation. For rabies shots, we administer these subcutaneous by grabbing the loose skin on the back and injecting just under the skin. Please call or text to reserve a spot. We do tend to fill up during major holidays. Space is limited. We will board at no charge and breed your female every other day to a stud dog of your choice. Stud fees are nonrefundable, although if female fails to get pregnant you may bring her out for an additional breeding. If a third breeding is necessary, we will require that a veterinarian examine the female to ensure fertility before we attempt the third breeding. If your female is a virgin, no brucellosis test is required. However, if she has previously been bred to a dog other than a Heidelberg, we require a brucellosis test. Full-Service Grooming We offer full-service grooming. Training Many times throughout the year, we offer free group obedience and conformation training on Saturday mornings. See our Show Info page for dates and times of these free classes. Usually, it does not take more than one or two sessions to resolve a particular problem or to teach your Heidelberg German Shepherd Dog, puppy or adolescent basic obedience commands. We also have many of our dogs being trained in search and rescue, herding, and as service dogs. If you are interested in any of these training services, we can provide you with information for the best groups to contact. If you are interested in owning a champion and competing in the conformation ring, we will assist and fully support you in this endeavor. For a nominal fee, we will gladly take your dog to shows if you cannot make it yourself. In addition, we will assist you in picking out and training a future champion that will readily win so that you may avoid unnecessary expenses. We did much of the work ourselves, and after my real job, I would drive out to the property to do construction work. This particular occasion, I was on the property installing hardwood floors. Oregon became bored with my installation work and he decided to find another room with a cool place to lie down on the concrete subfloor. I stepped outside the back door to rinse out a bucket when out of the woods two very large Rottweilers came running straight towards me. I instantly could tell that these were not friendly dogs and that they were intent upon attacking me. With one Rottweiler, I could possibly defend myself, but with two, I was in real trouble. Suddenly, I felt Oregon brush across my leg as he charged to meet these two large muscular dogs. He slammed into the shoulder of the closest one knocking him over, and then Oregon latched onto the face of the other with a guttural growl. Unsettled they ran back into the woods from which they had materialized. Oregon was in hard pursuit. After I processed all that had taken place in a matter of seconds, my thoughts and concerns were redirected to Oregon. Before I could call him, a terrible noise came from the woods. I heard dogs growling, crying, screaming, and then silence. Then Oregon appeared unscathed from the woods in an extremely proud trot. Naturally, I gave him the royal treatment for the rest of the day. I am convinced that I would have been severely injured or worse if Oregon had not been there to protect me. If you need a protector for your wife or children, call us for the best home protector and baby-sitter that you will ever own. No alarm or security system short of a hour armed guard could protect your family and property as well. Nancy and the Kids Nancy has asked to remain anonymous. Nancy was 27 married with children, a boy and girl age 3 and 2, and her husband traveled a lot for his job. They had purchased their Heidelberg shortly after they were married to protect Nancy while her husband was out-of-town. In this neighborhood, the mailboxes were on the front porches. One night while alone with her two small children Nancy was awakened to the sound of a deep guttural growl, that she had never heard before. The growl caused the hair of her neck to stand. She got out of bed and followed Chance downstairs where he jumped up on the back window barking loudly. Nancy still hazy from her deep sleep thought the best thing to do was to open back door and let Chance out. Nancy called the police, and the police found that the screen was removed from the back window and that the window had been pried open. The intruder, they said, was only moments from coming in the house. A week later in the same neighborhood, an intruder broke into a house and brutally raped a woman. They never did catch this predator, but what is known is that Chance saved Nancy and her two children from a potentially brutal attack. While our kennel was small, we still had several German Shepherd Dogs that we had to divide them up and have family members care for them until we could purchase property and build kennels in Oklahoma. During these trips, Patty started to notice that every time she had high or low blood sugar Bismarck would lean over the car seat and incessantly lick her face. Patty has had juvenile diabetes since she was years-old. Sometimes with high or low sugar blood levels diabetics will not help themselves because they become confused mentally. Therefore, family members may have to force the diabetic to test and treat their sugar blood level. One day, my daughter and I had just started to watch a movie when Patty said that she was going to Wal-Mart. Two hours later, Ashley walked outside to find Patty hanging halfway out the door of her vehicle passed out and almost in a diabetic coma. Patty would check her sugar in the evenings and if it was high or low, she would then bring Kodi into the house and love on him until her sugar returned to normal levels. Kodi goes everywhere with Patty including work, restaurants, when she travels, etc. In the four years that Kodi has been a full-time Service Dog, the only serious diabetic event Patty has had is when she left Kodi at home to do some Christmas shopping in .Patty had disappeared for several hours and the entire family began calling her. When she answered the phone it was obvious that her blood sugar was low and that she did not know where she was while driving her car. We finally got her to park in a parking lot and through a lot of questioning, we pinpointed her general location. Her sister found her and got her to eat dinner, and Patty recovered. The next shopping trip, Kodi went with Patty. Kodi sleeps on the floor next to Patty and wakes her up in the middle of the night if her sugar is high or low. This is a great comfort to the family because most diabetics slip into diabetic comas or even die while asleep. This nighttime risk for diabetics is because nobody is around to know they are in trouble. He is our hero! Welcome to the Oklahoma state page on TrustedPuppies. Above: Mini F1b, Curly. Above: Mini F1, Wavy. Coats can vary in color. A good way to predict adult color is to look at the ears of the puppy. In addition, consider the pedigree when expecting a litter. It is hard to understand the complexity of the gene pool when mating. From my experience, red is considered a dilute gene of black. When red is bred with white, black or brown, black is dominate and pups are black. Two red parents, will make red or apricot. However, to carry the true red gene is very rare. Red can often fade with maturity. Many breeders boast about having red as it is highly sought after, but it can and may fade with time. I make a good effort at trying to produce red, but it is more rare. Brown and black also produce black. Two browns will make brown. Red can be so dark red that it is considered mahogany or rust. My Sangria, F1 mini-goldendoodle female is an example of this beautiful color. I do not claim to be an expert in the study, nor do I make any guarantees on future adult color. In breeds like the cocker spaniel, the red will be apricot as a pup, but can become dark red with maturity. Spots can also widen with maturity or appear to have moved around as they broadened out. In designer breeds, the puppy can look completely different as an adult then how it did as a puppy. You may notice this at the very first haircut. As much as we love color, we need to pay more attention to the temperament of the puppy and make sure the puppy is very socialized and loved, especially during the critical stage of development up to 5 months. See my temperament testing page for more information on this. Loose and wavy: This is the most common type of coat found in a goldendoodle such as an F1. They are considered low to non-shed. They are easy to maintain. You may want to brush in the common friction areas such as behind the ears, hind quarters, and underarms. Bodily brushing about once a week. Straight: These coats are considered flat or sporty like the golden retriever. They are the easiest to maintain and need minimal brushing. They will have some shed. Curly: These coats can be easily identified with the crimping on the forehead as a pup. They are most common in F1bs. Their coats can have "loose curl" or "tight curl. Examples: Above: "Loose and wavy" as a puppy at 5 weeks old. This is an example of an F1. Left: "Curly" as a puppy. Puppy at 5 weeks old. F1b, crimping on forhead visible. Right: "Straight" at 5 months. This coat type typically can be found in F1 litters. No crimping on forehead or ears. Left: tight curl as an adult. Right: "Curly" at 10 weeks old. More squiggles on forehead than "loose and wavy" type. Notice the difference. This is an example of an F1b. This coat type is best for those that have allergies and desire lots of curl. An excellent example of a loose and wavy coat. This dog is an F1 miniature goldendoodle from Ginger and Tamale. Some of Ginger's puppies do throw the sport coat. It can be difficult to predict how the coats will turn out as adults, but we do our best to look for wavy features in the early stages. In the end, unless you have allergies, please understand they are so much more than just how they look. You get what you get and don't throw a fit! I do my best to help you pick out what you desire, but please note, I do not guarantee coat quality. Puppies are not an item I can stock on the shelf. Mother nature is in control. Many F1s will develop their wave after they go through their coat change at 5 months of age. It can take even up to 8 months to see the true coat quality. All Goldendoodles can smell, regardless of coat type. There are seven common causes of Goldendoodles smelling — find out more here. There are three types of Goldendoodle fur coats Wavy Curly Straight The three Goldendoodle coats have differing degrees of curliness. Different genes inherited from the parent dogs will determine the coat type. They are also referred to as fleece coats. Wavy coat Goldendoodles are typically low shedding. A wavy coat does require grooming to prevent deep knots from forming. A wavy coat will grow to around cm 4 to 7 inches in left untrimmed The hair will typically be shorter around the face Wavy coats are low shedding Wavy or fleece coats are less dense than a curly coat Wavy coat Goldendoodles are low allergy Wavy coat Goldendoodles need brushing at least once per week. The coat will stay healthy and clean with little effort. If left to develop, sometimes the knots need shaving, which can cause discomfort. Brush well before shampooing your Goldendoodle with the best breed appropriate shampoo Curly Coat Goldendoodles Curly Goldendoodle coats feature the densest curls of any Groodle coat type. The curly coat is also most like that of the purebred Poodle. If the coat is curly, you can look for a few early signs to help tell the coat type of your Goldendoodle. Curly coats will eventually stop growing if left. The hair will typically be shorter around the face — but not always. Curly coat Goldendoodles are very allergy friendly. They are typically non-shedding. The curly coat is similar but not identical to a Poodle coat. Many owners and breeders report little to no Goldendoodle smell with this coat. Some owners only cut their Curly Coat Goldendoodles fur two or three times a year. They will need to brush once or twice a week to avoid knotting and give the best appearance. Straight Coat Goldendoodles Sometimes the straight coat Goldendoodle is called a hair coat or loose coat. These Goldendoodles share the most coat characteristics with a Golden Retriever. Straight coat Goldendoodles can resemble a Golden Retriever. They are the easiest to groom but do shed a little. Use the best-reviewed Goldendoodle shampoo to keep the coat soft. The straight coat can be extremely low maintenance These dogs are shedders This type of Goldendoodle is the most likely to cause trouble for allergy sufferers. Test individually as many allergy sufferers cope well with lots of different types of Poodle Mix breeds. Even though this coat is typically the least amount of maintenance — you may still need to brush. And more often than you think. If there is a dense undercoat it will be necessary to brush at least once per week to avoid knotting. Regardless of coat type, all Goldendoodles can end up with ear wax build-up or infections. Our guide on how to clean Labradoodle ears can be applied to Goldendoodles as well. If your dog wears a collar or harness frequently you will need to brush these areas irrespective of which coat type is present. The change from puppy coat can be sudden. It can also be gradual and take months to switch to an adult coat. Toy and teacup Goldendoodles will experience a puppy coat change too. Several breeders say that it is common for Goldendoodle puppy owners not to notice the coat change. The breeders said this is because either The coat change was gradual from 6 months of age with no sudden change Or some adult coats for Godlendoodles are super soft and indistinguishable from the puppy coat How To Tell What Coat Your Goldendoodle Will Have Genetics will determine the variables of the coat. Cross-breeding dogs can give unpredictable results. Goldendoodle puppies can be more like one parent than the other, Breeders and owners have noted some tricks and tips to help determine the future coat of a Goldendoodle puppy. The usual reminder that a Groodle is the same thing as a Goldendoodle. So if you are looking to find out how to tell what type of coat a Groodle will have — you are in the right place. From early puppyhood through to one year of age, the Goldendoodle coat is in a constant state of development. Knowing exactly the type of coat that a puppy will have as an adult is not possible. There are however some early signs that give you an indication of what the adult coat will be. We asked owners and breeders how to tell what coat your Goldendoodle will have. How to tell what coat your Goldendoodle puppy will have: Check the snout. By comparing the coats of the parent dogs you will get a generally good idea of the range of possibilities. If both parents are Goldendoodle with fleece, a wavy coat is most likely. If both have loose straight hair — be prepared for shedding. Nature and genetics will have the final say. These coat prediction methods give best indication of future coat type. There can always be surprises. Naming inspiration from a galaxy far, far away. The hypoallergenic, non-shedding Poodle coat is a highly desired feature. This significantly increases the likelihood of a Curly coat or Wavy coat. F1b Goldendoodles are less likely to have a significant coat change from puppyhood to adulthood. It is common for the fur density and coarseness to increase. These Goldendoodles do not have teddy bear features. English Goldendoodles are more likely than American Goldendoodles to have a boxy teddy bear appearance. Both types can look very teddy-bear-like with the correct furnishings. We call the Goldendoodle teddy bear face features furnishings. Dogs with any of the three coat types can also be missing furnishings. As a result, they can look much more like a Poodle or a Golden Retriever. Bernedoodles experience something similar with their tri-colour coats. F1 Goldendoodles are the most likely to be missing furnishings. A puppy without furnishings is unlikely to develop them when the coat changes to the adult Goldendoodle coat. Contact Goldendoodle Coat Type Information There are a total of 3 specific coat types a goldendoodle can be born with: A curly coat, a wavy coat, or a flat coat, also know as an improper coat. All of our parent dogs are tested to ensure they do not have the gene present that produces a flat coated goldendoodle, in addition to this we also test to ensure your new goldendoodle will have the proper facial furnishings and a low to no-shedding coat. This is a guide to help you choose the coat that will best suit your preferences and lifestyle. Curly Coat Type The most requested Goldendoodle coat type we get is for a curly coat. It is Goldendoodles with this coat type will present with a wavy coat as young puppies, but as they grow into an adult their coat will become much thicker and curlier. The curly coated goldendoodles have extremely minimal shedding to absolutely no shedding and are hypoallergenic. However the tradeoff to the amazing curly coat is that it requires significantly more brushing and grooming depending on how tight your goldendoodles curls are, although it can be shaved down to create a maintenance free coat. Below are examples of some our previous puppies with a curly coat. I don't pretend to be an expert but this information has proven to be very helpful in explaining coat changes you may observe and determining how your doodle will end up looking. It may help you in choosing the pup that will best meet your preference There are basically 3 coat types: Flat or Smooth, Curly, and Wavy. The amount of ripples in the coat of the newborn pup are a great indicator of how they will turn out. As the pup gets older the coat becomes fluffy. At around 8 weeks the baby coat may shed and this continues periodically as the coat changes. It is not the shedding you see in other dogs where hair flies as you pet them. It is generally minimal and is just a phase the pups go through until they get their adult coat. The curly coated doodles tend to go through fewer changes. As with all predictions there are no guarantees but the law of averages applies. Most doodles have a classic V-shaped appearance in the face. Very curly, more poodle like doodles may not have this. No matter what coat type you have, grooming choices will vastly alter the dog's appearance so you do have lots of control over how your doodle looks. Shaggy doodles with the hair trimmed around their eyes so they can see! The shaggy and longer coats must be monitored for mats and a good brushing once or twice a week is a big help and also a great bonding time for you and your dog. Here at 3-doodles we have only had one litter of F2's F1's bred to each other. We had one complaint of shedding from the F2 litter but the pup may have been shedding his puppy coat as per the norm. We may not have anymore F1 or F2 litters as the non-shedding more allergy friendly coat is our goal. We have had a couple of pups shed from our F1b litters and it has been the more retriever like coats but lots of folks prefer that look and shedding is not an issue for them. They just want a great dog. As we have had the opportunity to see many of our previous pups grow up I have compared the adult look to the puppy look and have been surprised and pleased to see how they turn out. Also I am going to address size and the adult weight prediction. A 50 lb retriever is consider very small. There are many opinions regarding the acceptable size for a mini golden doodle and despite what you may read, there is no hard and fast rule. Some breeders consider a toy size under 25 lbs to determine this. I tend to compare to a standard size and therefore I consider under 40 lbs a mini and lbs a medium. Our parent dogs are all under 55 lbs at this time and some are as small as 22 lbs. Weight estimate is obtained by adding the two weights and dividing by two. So far this has been accurate with the exception of one very large pup with a current predicted weight of lbs. I never guarantee weights no one should but I try to give my best guess. This is a way to identify the golden doodle crosses. This is true of all crosses. An F2 is an F1xF1. An F1b is an F1 Golden doodle x a poodle. We have noticed the looks of each cross do not differ much. Not surprisingly there are opinions about this as well however since there is not yet an official organization that determines definite guidelines, we doodle breeders try to use the same terminology and breed standards. Here at 3-doodles we look at the coat types and colors of our parent doodles to determine the most desirable matches. We also consider the personalities of our pets. So far the doodles have a predictable personality and that is the perfect combination of the loveable and gentle golden retriever and the exceptionally smart and easily trainable poodle. These dogs are beyond loveable and smart and we think they are one of the absolute best choices of any dog. A word about allergies: All coat types are generally allergy-friendly with the curlier coats having a reputation of most allergy friendly and the straighter coats more likely to have some shedding so not great for those folks. There is no absence of dog dander in any breed so if you or a family member have severe allergies to dogs, even the doodles may not be tolerated. I have had several customers do fine with a golden doodle but again there are no guarantees. I suggest that the sensitive individual go and spend some time with a doodle to see how they react. It's just so heartbreaking to bring home a pup and then have to give it up. I'd hate to see that happen to anyone so be cautious. Hope this was helpful information and best of luck in finding your pup! Bentley as a puppy and at about one year. No shedding. Below Simba with curly coat. Bruno as a puppy then around 6 months, and then a year. This is Griffin at about 7 months. He is an English Cream wavy coated pup and has gone through a coat change. We rarely get these coats but the beautiful Golden Retriever coat and look sometimes appears. They may end up shedding a little more but no one seems to care. It occurs in all Goldendoodle generations, including the F1's, F1b's and mulitgens, and is fairly easy to maintain. It requires brushing at least once or twice a week, with more frequent brushing in high friction areas like under the collar or around the ears. Shedding and heavy shedding is common among the F1 and F2 Goldendoodle generations. Note: we do not offer the F1 or the F2 generations. We offer the F1b and the multigen generations, the most non-shedding generations. So if your looking for a specific coat type and minimal to non shedding coats are important to you, be sure that you choose a breeder like us that does the proper DNA coat testing. Curly Goldendoodle Coats: The second most common Goldendoodle coat type is the curly coat, which is more common among F1b or some mulitgen goldendoodles and because of their poodle lineage. The coat can be anything from a relaxed loose curl to a more curly wool coat. Most do not get as curly as a poodle. This Goldendoodle coat type requires more frequent brushing, although it can be shaved down to create a maintenance free coat if the owner prefers. The curly Goldendoodle coat type is minimal to non-shedding and hypoallergenic, when the Goldendoodle is an F1b or in a mulitgen, but to know more the breeder must genetically DNA test their parents. Examples: Goldendoodles with curly coats. Flat, Improper Goldendoodle Coats: The least sought after Goldendoodle coat type is the flat coat, this is also called or known as having an Improper Coat , it is fairly common in F2 Goldendoodle breeding's. Often referred to as the Golden Retriever type coat, it's easy to maintain and requires minimal brushing. However, this Goldendoodle coat type does not produce the desired "teddybear" look that we strive for and that Goldendoodles are renowned for displaying, nor will it produce a "beard" and facial around the muzzle. This Goldendoodle flat coat or Improper Coat type can produce moderate to high shedding coats and are not recommended for those families with allergies. How To Tell The Difference: It is especially difficult to distinguish Goldendoodle coat types especially at the puppy stage, when all coat types can look fairly similar. A reputable, experienced breeder will be able to tell you the each puppies coat type as well as their propensity to shed. However, the face and muzzle area can provide some indication of what the puppy's coat will look like as an adult. Generally, the more crimps or waves a puppy has in it's face and muzzle hair, the curlier his or her coat will likely be. A puppy with a smooth face with no beard that doesn't have any waves or crimps will probably have a flat or Improper Coat. Always ask your breeder for clarification on puppy coat types to assure you get the coat type and the degree of shedding you want with your puppy. But, not all Goldendoodle coats are the same. Goldendoodle lying on the grass Goldendoodles have three main coat types called curly, wavy, and straight. Rarely, Goldendoodles may also present with an improper coat. Curly coats are the most hypoallergenic but require frequent brushing, while straight coats are the opposite. The curls may be thick and tight or slightly looser. Curly coats are the most common in backcrossed generations, especially F1b. They are quite popular because they are the most hypoallergenic of all Goldendoodle coats. However, they require the most care. Caring for Goldendoodles with Curly Coats Goldendoodle with Curly Coat Goldendoodles with curly coats need to be brushed about once a day. Depending on how tight the curls are, sometimes every second day may be fine too. You also need to make sure that you wash a Goldendoodle with a curly coat quite often. Once a month is ideal for some, while others can push it to about six weeks. It depends largely on how much time the Goldendoodle spends outside. When washing your Goldendoodle, make sure that you get all the way down to the skin. This can sometimes be very difficult if the curly coat is very thick. Wavy-coated Goldendoodles resemble Teddy-bears the most, drawing attention to the breed. They do not take after the Poodle or the Golden Retriever more but are instead a good balance of the two. Goldendoodles with wavy coats occur the most often in F1 generations. They are not as hypoallergenic as the curly-coated Goldendoodle because they shed a little bit more. They are easier to groom, though. Caring for Goldendoodles with Wavy Coats Wavy Coat Goldendoodle Outdoors Goldendoodles with wavy coats can be brushed about twice a week as long as it is done thoroughly. Bathing can be done roughly every month and a half to two months, depending on their activity level. If you struggle with the shedding of the wavy-coated Goldendoodle, trimming it will help. Alternatively, brushing it daily will also make a difference. Their coats are relatively straight, although there may still be large, loose waves present. They do not look like Golden Retrievers, though. This is largely due to the fur around their snout, which looks like a goatee and mustache. This hair is sometimes referred to as furnishings. The Goldendoodles with straight coats shed a lot, making them the worst option if you have allergies. They are also the easiest coats to maintain. Caring for Goldendoodles with Straight Coats Goldendoodles with straight coats can be brushed about once a week. Bathing them is a little bit more difficult to determine, but it can be done as necessary. If they do not roll around in dirt outside, roughly every two months should be more than enough for your Goldendoodle. One way to figure out if it is time to bathe your Goldendoodle with a straight coat is to run your hands as close to the skin as possible. It may be time for a bath if you notice a brown residue on your fingers. Otherwise, if your Goldendoodle loves water, you may be able to smell mildew. This is particularly common in the chest region. Improper Coat An improper coat is the rarest of all Goldendoodle coats. You will find it in F2 Goldendoodles more than any other generation. An improper coat is similar to a straight coat. These Goldendoodles take after their Golden Retriever parents a great deal. The difference between straight and improper coats is in the furnishings. Without it, the Goldendoodle looks nothing like the teddy bear that it is famous for, and instead just looks like a thinner Golden Retriever. The care of an improper coat is identical to that of a straight coat. Helpful Tools for Goldendoodle Coat Care The Right Shampoo Goldendoodles can be prone to skin sensitivities, so make sure that you are using the correct shampoo. Something with Oatmeal in it is more gentle on the skin, which means that you will be able to wash your Goldendoodle more often without worrying. Detangler Like most other Poodle hybrids, the Goldendoodles can be prone to matting. This should not be a problem if you brush them daily. However, sometimes you may still find yourself in need of a little bit of help. A good detangling spray can be used after a bath to make sure that getting any mats out is a relatively pain-free process for your Goldendoodle. High-Quality Brush Goldendoodles have very thick hair. This is true regardless of their coat type. A high—quality brush does not guarantee a thorough brush. But, it makes it a lot easier. It is sometimes all that you need. Related Reading:. Flat coats are quite commonly seen in F2 Goldendoodles. These coats are easy to maintain when compared with curlier coated types. However, if you want a Goldendoodle that has the traditional teddy bear look, a flat-coated dog is not for you. Also, these dogs are moderate to high shedders and are, therefore, not recommended for a family with allergies. However, unlike flat-coated Doodles, the straight coat type does have furnishings and the fur tends to be fluffier in texture. Straight coat Goldendoodles are also referred to as loose coats or hair coats, and these pups have coats that are most like a Golden retriever. Also, these dogs do tend to shed quite heavily, making them unsuitable for those with pet allergies. So, if you take on one of these Goldendoodles, you must also be prepared to vacuum your carpets daily! Wavy Coat Image Source: Instagram. A wavy or shaggy coat is the most common type of Goldendoodle coat type, and they are also sometimes called fleece coats. In fact, the wavy coat occurs in all the most popular generations of Goldendoodles, including F1, F1b, and multigenerational dogs. Wavy Goldendoodles can be minimal shedders, although F1 and F2 dogs tend to be moderate to heavy shedders. So, to be certain as to whether your puppy will shed or not, always choose a reputable breeder that has had all their breeding dogs DNA tested. Curly Coat Curly coats are created when the puppy inherits a curl gene from each parent. These dogs have very dense, fleece-like coat characteristics that most closely resemble the coat of the Poodle parent. You will most commonly find curly coats in an F1B Goldendoodle or some of the multigenerational Goldendoodles. However, most owners prefer to have their dogs shaved or clipped. Curly Goldendoodles are minimal to non-shedding coats, which makes these dogs extremely sought after by people with pet allergies. If you leave the coat to grow without having your dog clipped, the curls will become very dense, making it difficult to gauge their length simply by looking at the coat. That said, eventually, the hair will stop growing. To make matters even more confusing, Goldendoodles commonly change color as they mature. Generally, if the puppy has a smooth face without furnishings, he will most likely have an improper or flat coat. Goldendoodle Coat Stages As previously mentioned, Goldendoodle puppies begin shedding their puppy coats once they reach around six months of age. By the time your puppy is eight months old or more, he will have his final adult coat. The final coat is usually not as soft and fluffy as the puppy coat. The coat change can be gradual or sudden, taking a matter of weeks or several months. Also, some super-soft adult Goldendoodle coats are virtually indistinguishable from the puppy coat. Until recently, crossbreeding dogs generally gave unpredictable results with the puppies taking more after one parent than the other. Now, DNA testing is commonly used by good breeders to determine what kind of coat their puppies will have. However, there are a few tried and tested methods of determining what kind of coat the puppy will have as an adult. That can be a good indicator for the coat type your dog will have as an adult. Generally, a prominent mustache is a clear indicator that the puppy will have a curly coat. Dogs that will go on to develop wavy coats tend to grow a shaggy beard around the muzzle. Straight-coated Goldendoodles usually have short, neat hair around their snout. If the puppy is anything other than an F1, first-generation pup, look at both the parent dogs. Generally, puppies take after one parent dog. However, genetics always have the final say when it comes to coat types. Inspiration For Names! One of the fun things about owning a Goldendoodle is choosing a name for your dog. For a few more ideas on what names you can choose for your Doodle puppy, check out this guide! Most people think of the Goldendoodle as having those classic teddy bear looks that everyone finds so adorable. However, not all puppies go on to develop that wavy or curly coat and furnishings that are so desirable. And, of all the generations, the F1B Goldendoodles are much less likely to have a significant coat change as they mature, although the coat coarseness and density are quite likely to increase. Interestingly, English Goldendoodles are more likely to have that boxy teddy bear features than American Goldendoodles. However, both kinds can develop the teddy bear appearance with the correct furnishings. Dogs with any of the three types of Goldendoodle coats can be with or without furnishings. F1 Goldendoodles are most likely to be without furnishings. That involvement entails providing access to the very latest research and expert guidance on canine reproduction, breed development, and puppy development. However, through the careful selection of mates, a good breeder can produce that adorable Teddy Bear look that people love so much. Shedding intensity can also be predicted through careful DNA research and careful breeding. The S gene that gives the dog a short coat is dominant. Doodle coats can be curly, straight, or wavy, depending on the number of curl genes that they take from their parents. What Are Furnishings? Commonly known as the F gene, the gene, RSP02 is responsible for those furnishings. Improper Coat A coat that has no furnishings is known as an improper coat or IC. Goldendoodles that have Ff or F IC or one copy of the furnishings gene tend to be lighter shedders than dogs that do have furnishings. I hope you enjoyed this guide! Black For even more variety, there are patterns of these colors found in the Goldendoodle, including parti, merle, phantom, and brindle. Merle is a varied coat pattern. While a beautiful color, the merle gene can cause blindness and deafness if two parents carrying the merle gene are bred together, so merles should be bred only by very knowledgeable breeders who test for the merle gene and understand the genetics involved. Brindle patterns appear as stripes, the color and the width vary with each dog. With careful breeding, breeders can now produce litters with predictable coat types and shedding propensities. One of the things that many people find attractive about the Goldendoodle is the low shedding and hypo-allergenic qualities of the coat, and the adorable ragamuffin look of the Goldendoodle. No longer do you need to rely on the generation of a Goldendoodle to determine appearance or shedding intensity! This is why some Labradoodles have short coats in the early generations, whereas Goldendoodles do not. Curl KRT71 gene Goldendoodles can be curly, wavy, or straight. They inherit their number of curl genes from their parents. If a breeder tests the parent dogs for the curl gene, they can better predict the appearance of their puppies. Even more interestingly, genetic technology has taught us that furnishings are what confer the low- to non-shedding coats on our Goldendoodles that help make them such optimal family dogs. Based on Mendelian genetics, this educated guess was often just that—a guess about the odds. This is when the use of notations like F1 and F1b came about and what has caused many people to think they need to know the generation to guess about furnishings. In the recent past, new commercially available tests have been developed that allow us to genetically test our parent dogs for furnishing genes and other coat genes as well, such as curl so we can better predict coat type in puppies. This is much, much more accurate and dependable than the old Mendelian filial F1, F1b, etc. The gene responsible for furnishings is dominant; so by testing the parent dogs DNA, it can be determined if a breed pair will produce puppies that all have furnishings, or if there will be some puppies with an incorrect or Golden Retriever like coat. Dogs with one copy of the furnishings gene Ff or F IC are lower shedding than dogs without furnishings. Dogs with two copies of furnishing genes FF are typically non-shedding. If you have a family with allergies, a Goldendoodle with an incorrect coat is not the best match for you. Coat variation in the domestic dog is governed by variants in three genes. J Hered. The Shedding gene is still relevant for shedding for NON-furnished dogs short facial hair , but have no impact for shedding for our furnished Goldendoodles. Even a Goldendoodle with two furnishings genes does not guarantee that you will not be allergic to a particular dog. Allergies are very complex and shedding is just one of the components that factor in the equation. Consider that dander, saliva, proteins, and allergens carried on the dogs coat, etc. As you can see, there is a lot of science that goes into the selection of breeding mates to produce the ideal Goldendoodle. He loves outdoor activities, has excelled in obedience and loves attention. Together they produce puppies that have the temperament and intelligence we stive for with the good looks that come from nice English lines. He is a handsome, intelligent dog with excellent conformation and a great temperament. He is considerably bigger than our other dogs, but he is ultra gentle, quiet and easy to work with. Chester absolutely loves to retrieve — he is a fine marker and has plenty of get up and go with a natural steadiness to him. Things come very easy to this smart boy. Chester is currently in training for hunt tests, rally obedience and agility. He has earned his novice Rally title and his Starters Games Dog title in agility, with several legs towards his advanced games title. Chester made his dock jumping debut at the BC Xtreme Air Championships and finished in 1st place in the Amateur division. At a rally obedience trial, one spectator remarked that they had never seen such controlled drive- it was evident by the way Chester performed that he was enthusiastic but was able to hold it together in the face of his excitement. Besides being a competitor and remarkable gun dog, Chester is also my best buddy, and regular travel companion. His only downside is that he tends to hog the bed! He is continuing the great tradition of throwing super talented, well structured dogs and his pups are even more versatile than their ancestors. Chester puppies are young, with the oldest having been born in and already titled in flyball, agility, rally, nosework, hunt tests and working as gun dogs, therapy dogs, detection dogs and search and rescue. Chester is now retired from breeding and competition. His only work these days is to make sure that breakfast and beditme occur on schedule. I have a 2-month-old Labrador pup, we used to feed him cerelac. The vet advised to feed him Pedigree Pup food, there is no instruction on the package on how to feed him? I am looking for instruction on feeding pedigree and any tips or advice about other food is welcome. .So right now, go maybe a half cup twice a day, and as he gets bigger just start giving him a little bit more. Answer by Critters—New CH! A lot of people feed puppy food. I don't after 10 weeks. A lot of people will tell you that the food you are feeding him is crap. I won't. It is dog food and will do and he will develop fine. If you can afford better food, consider it. Just like with people, if you can afford food better than ramen and spaghetti you buy it, but most college kids would be dead if a diet like this KILLED you. After a week or two, look at the pup. If he is fat a good layer of fat over his ribs or between his front legs, feed him a little less. If he is skinny you can see or really feel his ribs and there is NO fat between his front legs feed him a little more. Eventually, on pedigree he may eat up to 3. Remember, with better quality food you may need to feed less. Cute, furry and hungry! Your puppy is ready for proper food and so it is your duty to ensure that you start him off right. And adult dogs are already grown up, they require diet only to maintain their bodies, so the nutritional needs are separate from puppies. Now, you might know that how your puppy needs extra ingredients to fuel his growth efficiently. How often should you feed your puppy? Puppies should eat three times a day from weaning through four to six months, if possible. After six months, twice-a-day feedings are fine. Treat and snacks are also an add-on factor to its variety. It also makes foods that are meant for oral care, hip and joint health, weight control, and other health concerns. Like other brands, it categorizes the foods by age — adult, puppy, and senior foods; and by the size of the dog — small, medium, large breed. Pedigree is an old as well as an established brand sold in grocery stores. The greatest thumbs-up feature of it is that the products are also priced to fit lower budgets. But, when they are over-used in his food as an alternative for meat proteins, it comes out as not-so-desirable food item. Corn gluten meal is a dried, reduced form of corn containing more proteins than the ordinary corns. Poultry by-product meal— This implies that the food can be any kind of poultry. Brewers rice— It is used exclusively in puppy foods. This is a carb filler. Additionally, preserving it with citric acid is also beneficial. Puppies can get healthy nutrition from these sources. Long-haired German Shepherds are technically called a long coat German Shepherd, while a short-haired German Shepherd is called a normal coat or stock coat German Shepherd. Dogs with either coat have the same physiological structure and both have double coats: an undercoat and a top coat. The only difference between the two is the top coat. The long haired German Shepherd will have a heavier top coat than the undercoat. The double coat of a German Shepherd is an important feature of the breed. The double coat weathers and insulates the dogs—it protects them from the cold in the winter and the heat in the summer. The length of the coat of a German Shepherd has no impact on its ability as a working dog. What does a long haired German Shepherd look like? The skeleton and structure of a long-haired German Shepherd will be the same as a short-haired German Shepherd. Both dogs will have an undercoat, but the difference is that the top coat of a long-haired German Shepherd will be longer. The long coat GSD has longer and silkier hair on the chest, back, face, tail, and on the backside of its legs. Short on the head, including the inside of the ears, on the front side of the legs, on the paws and toes, somewhat longer and more strongly covered in hair on the neck, almost forming a mane. On the back side of the legs the hair extends to the carpal joint or the hock and forms clear trousers on the back side of the haunches. Historically, German Shepherds originated in Germany and were native sheepdogs. He firmly believed that the standard of the German Shepherd breed should not include dogs with long hair. Throughout the s, long haired German Shepherds were considered unsuitable and unacceptable for breeding. It is important to note that long-haired German Shepherds are the result of natural genetic diversity and not a separate breed. Their long coats are an inherited trait that can occur when both parents carry the recessive long-hair gene. This gene manifests as a more luxurious and abundant coat, offering a striking contrast to the traditional short-haired German Shepherd appearance. The breeding of long-haired German Shepherds follows the same rigorous standards and principles as their short-haired counterparts. The focus remains on maintaining the breed's exceptional temperament, working abilities, and overall health. Over time, breeders recognized the value of long-haired German Shepherds and began selectively breeding them to maintain and enhance their unique characteristics. Through careful pairings and strategic breeding programs, the long-haired variety established itself as a distinct and cherished branch of the German Shepherd breed. How big do long-haired German Shepherds get? Long-haired German Shepherds are structurally the same as short-haired German Shepherds, therefore they can both grow to similar sizes. Males: inches tall, pounds Females: inches tall, pounds Since both German Shepherds are physiologically the same, they also have the same temperaments: loyal, intelligent, energetic, courageous and protective. German Shepherds are ranked 2 on the AKC Breed Popularity list and make for wonderful family companions and working dogs. How can I identify a long-haired German Shepherd puppy? In the photo below are two litter mates from a recent Nadelhaus litter. The puppy on the left is a long coat and the puppy on the right is a normal coat. The long coat has wispier hair on the chest, back, face, tail, and on the backside of its legs. Long-hair female German Shepherd next to short-hair male German Shepherd. Genetically in German Shepherds, the short hair gene is dominant and the long hair gene is recessive. This means if two short-haired German Shepherds are mated, but neither carries the recessive long hair gene, then no long haired puppies can be produced. However, if two short-haired German Shepherds are mated and both carry the recessive gene, then long-haired German Shepherd puppies can be produced. Long-haired German Shepherds are considered a less common variant of the breed, adding to their allure and exclusivity. While short-haired German Shepherds dominate the breed standard, enthusiasts of long-haired Shepherds appreciate their unique beauty and elegant appearance. Due to their rarity, finding a reputable breeder or rescue organization specializing in long-haired German Shepherds may require some research and patience. However, the joy of owning one of these beautiful dogs is well worth the effort for those who appreciate their longer coats and exceptional qualities. Do long-haired German Shepherds shed more than short-haired German Shepherds? No, this is a common misconception. Although they shed less than short haired German Shepherds, their coats still require regular maintenance. They will need regular brushing and grooming, especially if you enjoy hiking or outdoor activities with your GSD. While it is a rare occurrence for a long-haired GSD to not have an undercoat, most of them do have undercoats. And just like short-haired GSDs, their undercoats will shed more or less throughout the year depending on the season. Should I trim my long haired German Shepherd's coat? The decision to trim a long haired German Shepherd comes down to personal preference, but it is not a necessity. Trimming can help make for more manageable living around the house. If you choose to trim, you can trim around the backs of the ears, on the back of the legs both front and back and then thin the bushy tail. Shaving a German Shepherd on the other hand is never recommended. Their double coats help keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. What are long haired German Shepherds called? Regular brushing: Long-haired German Shepherds require regular brushing to prevent matting and tangles. Aim for at least a few brushing sessions per week to keep their coat in good condition. Finish your brushing session with a gentle dog brush to clean up loose hairs. Bathing and drying: It's important to bathe your long-haired German Shepherd as needed, using a dog-specific shampoo. Be sure to thoroughly rinse out all the shampoo to prevent any residue. After bathing, use a high-velocity dryer or a cool air dryer to dry their coat thoroughly, as moisture trapped in the fur can lead to skin issues. Professional grooming: Consider taking your long-haired German Shepherd to a professional groomer for occasional trimming and coat maintenance. A groomer can help keep the fur around sensitive areas, such as the paws and ears, tidy and reduce the chances of matting. Watch for seasonal shedding: Like all German Shepherds, long-haired ones will undergo shedding seasons. Be prepared for increased shedding during these times and brush your dog more frequently to remove loose hair. A de-shedding tool can be helpful in managing shedding and keeping their coat healthy. Remember, each dog is unique, and the specific care requirements may vary. Does Nadelhaus sell long haired German Shepherd puppies?
