This hiding, and retreating, and the scared smell are warning signs that you have scared your puppy badly, or purchased a poorly socialised puppy. In this situation you need to get specialist help right away. Your vet should be able to advise you. For the vast majority of puppy owners then, biting is normal puppy behavior. Or, it may involve temporarily separating him from his playmates. Interrupting the puppy biting In mild cases you may simply be able to put a toy in your biting puppy's mouth and get him tugging on that instead of on your fingers. If you are on the floor with the puppy stand up. And if you are standing up, turn and walk away from the puppy. This is where dog gates come in very handy with small puppies. A standard baby gate works fine for most breeds of dog. Managing the puppy You may have to pick up your biting puppy to remove him from the scene if he is biting your children for example, rather than you If he bites your hands and clothes as you try to restrain him, put him on the other side of a barrier or in his crate or puppy playpen for a short while. Although the puppy does learn from them, these are useful management techniques to enable you to control the situation. They help you to keep your puppy calm, and prevent the biting escalating through over excitement. Over-excited puppies Puppy play biting is directly linked to excitement. The more excited your puppy gets, the more and the harder he will bite. And the harder it will be to interrupt and distract him. Rough play excites puppies and noisy play does too. Children tend to squeal when they play and get very physical with puppies. One of the first rules they need to learn when playing with dogs, especially big dogs, is to stand up and stand still when the game gets too much. Limit such play and call a halt to it if your puppy is biting. With medium to large breed dogs, physical rough and tumble play is not a great idea. It can lead to dogs bowling people over or humping them, neither of which is very pleasant. Stopping play when it gets rough is a good management strategy and it is a form of training too. Over time, your puppy learns that biting and rough play loses him his playmates and that people simply leave if he is being mean. When do puppies stop biting? Many puppies have stopped biting completely by six months of age and biting is usually subsiding by the time that the puppy is heading towards five months old. Training Puppies Not To Bite The idea of this exercise is to teach a puppy to accept being stroked and handled in any way, without touching us with his teeth. The event marker is a distinctive sound. Even around his mouth, without him making any attempt to bite you. You can also make it easier for him by starting this training when he is calm and not distracted. But for now, keep things simple. It can be a good way of getting the training started so that you have chance to say YES and give the puppy the opportunity to learn what you want him to do. Over the next few sessions, you can work on getting your hand closer and closer to the puppy. Until you are brushing the sides of his face without him making any attempt to mouth or bite at you Progress to touching and holding his collar, stroking his ears, grooming him, examining his paws and so on, all the time rewarding him for the correct behavior. This is a great way to teach a dog excellent control over his mouth. After a couple of weeks of this, you can progress to the training exercise I outlined in the previous section. Older puppies that bite in play have often learned that this gets them a lot of attention. They have discovered that people squeal and shout and get quite cross. Sometimes these people push and shove the dog around which young dogs quite enjoy when they are playing. For these dogs it is important that you stop all physical play, with all family members If a puppy is biting hard at your hands when you try to interrupt his game. Or an older puppy is getting out of hand biting at clothing, you need to put your puppy on a harness and house-line a short trailing leash. This will enable you to control your puppy, and take him to a calming place, without handling him. You can just pick up the end of the line and lead him away. Believe it or not, even the most gentle dog that has been trained from a young age never to bite, can react to certain triggers. Those triggers are fear and pain. Consider these situations: Your dog has been suffering from chronic ear infections and hates to have his ears handled. The neighbor stops by with her toddler, who immediately runs to your dog and fondles his sensitive ears roughly. What will he do? You and your dog are walking down the road like you do every morning when out of nowhere comes a huge dog who attacks your dog without thinking twice. You manage to pull your dog away, but in the process, your frightened dog bites your arm. Your sweet golden retriever has gotten themself tangled in some barbed wire while hiking. As you loosen the wire from her skin and fur, she snaps at you, biting your hand. You may never experience any of these situations. By teaching bite inhibition while your puppy is young, you will be far safer and ready for any of these situations should they occur. Teaching Advanced Bite Inhibition Following is a general guide to the bite inhibition skills your puppy learns and when, as well as where you should aim for their skills to be at certain ages. She will start the puppies off by teaching them how rough is too rough during nursing and play. These lessons begin when the puppies start nursing day 1 and continue until the day you pick your puppy up from the breeder. This works for some puppies, but for others, it just seems to arouse the pup and make matters worse. You will have to experiment to find out what works for you and your pup. You should withdraw all of your attention from your puppy for very hard bites. Do not over-correct your puppy so they become afraid of biting. After your puppy has calmed down, use a chew toy as a reward and let them chew it in your lap or lying by your side. Supervise your puppy around children — If you have young children at home, you will have to think carefully about how you will protect them and your puppy. Little puppy teeth can cause a lot of pain, especially when your pup is still learning to control those urges. Young children can also cause a lot of pain to small puppies. I happened to be surfing the net when I came across your website. In those days anything animated and live on air had to be as simple as possible. I remember the large animated drawing cards with 'pull' and 'slide' instructions and would play with them when he returned home from the BBC studios. These 'animated' cartoons would take all week between programmes to produce along with the story line. The drawings were done in vision live and the narrative read by Mary Malcolm or Sylvia Peters. Apart from drawing 'Bengo' followed by 'Bleep and Booster' in the late '50's early '60's my uncle had strip cartoons syndicated all over the world. In this country there was the character called 'Humphrey' who appeared in the magazine 'Woman'. He was in great demand for his lifelike portraits and sculptures of animals and had many commissions including the Gorillas and Rhinos of Sir John Aspinal at Howlett's and Port Lympne, Lord Londonderry's bulldogs, an over life-size sculpture of two fighting Jaguars for Kerry Packer in Australia and Zoos in America. He even designed the TVT award 'oscar' presented each year to deserving television personalities and produced drawings or characatures for various covers for both the Radio and TV Times. The list goes on. He was then asked to sculpt Peter Purvis' dog 'Petra', this was shown on the programme through its various processes, as was the over life-size sculpture of 'Guy' the Gorilla commissioned by the London Zoo and filmed by Blue Peter as a special programme. He also had commissions for humans and his sculpture of Sir Malcolm Sergeant, commissioned by the Promenaders, stands on one of the sweeping staircases at the entrance to the Albert Hall; and a bust of Sir Francis Chichester is part of a display on the 'Gypsy Moth'. He was asked to sculpt a portrait of H. The Queen Mother but he felt that a medium such as bronze could not do justice to Her Majesty and therefore declined. My uncle loved animals and because of the lifelike quality he managed to instill into his pieces was asked to give interviews on various TV networks, he was also invited to a lunch hosted by Princess Margaret and Prince Philip on a World Wildlife Fund function when he sat next to Her Royal Highness who showed great interest in the 'lost wax' process. His collection of bronzes and drawings still stand as a lasting tribute to a very talented man who was presented with the MBE at the age of 87 by the Queen, in recognition of his work for the World Wildlife Fund, just two years before his death in .He fled from the Nazis in the s, ending up safely in Britain, and continued his artistic career drawing cartoons for several magazines. Bengo made his first television appearance in June .A feeling of movement was created as the camera panned across the drawings, while strings mounted to a few of the drawings caused mouths to open or paws to wave. After a while, announcer Sylvia Peters took over the speaking role. Bengo was so adored that Wade decided to model him with a few of his friends as small porcelain figurines. They are amongst the most delightful figures ever produced by Wade, slightly bigger than Whimsies, with Bengo being 2 inches high. Bengo is probably the easiest to find, a standing puppy with a friendly face. At the other end of the range, Bruno Junior Saint Bernard , Droopy basset hound , Percy afghan and Whisky corgi are harder to find, certainly boxed. Also in the series were Chee-Chee pekinese and Pepi chihuahua. Clever packaging was used to complement the dogs, with each being sold in a television-shaped box in shades of yellow, green or orange. My favourite, though, of all the Wade Bengo pieces, is the large Bengo moneybox, a model of the pup seated on a cushion in his basket, and standing 6 inches tall. Extremely difficult to find nowadays, these are something for Bengo collectors to keep an eye out for, but no doubt the majority soon perished after being chewed by infants! Recently I came across a charming badge featuring the head of Bengo, made from gold-coloured plastic. Bengo books add another dimension to a collection of items featuring the charming Boxer puppy. His most famous sculpture is the massive bronze of Guy the gorilla, erected in at London Zoo, which is invariably being hugged by small children whenever I visit! He also produced delightful paintings, and worked on cartoons for several publications. Bengo seems to be finding more and more fans, even amongst those who are too young to remember his television appearances, and there have been rumours of an animated series being made. Our puppies get to experience a variety of footing such as blankets, sheets, wood floors, tile floors, decking, carpeting, short grass, long grass, concrete, gravel, puppy agility equipment and sometimes snow. They are exposed to toys of all shapes and textures. The breed is well proportioned and strong with a sturdy, muscular, slightly elongated body that has a light but solid bone structure. The head should be in proportion to its body and have a little bit of a rounded forehead. The nose is most often black, but blue or liver colors still do sometimes occur. The teeth should meet in a scissors bite. Its eyes are dark and almond-shaped but never protruding. The ears are wide at its base, pointed, upright, and turned forward. At this shelter, Rex suffered seizures, which are now well controlled with medication. Rex also suffered from irritable bowel syndrome a very messy condition , which requires prescription food and medication in order to be completely managed. The treatment and maintenance of these two chronic conditions meant Rex was unlikely to thrive in a shelter environment, but the rescue network saw that this could be a happy dog and connected him with Kingston Animal Rescue. At times, he could not move them properly, they would seize up, and he would drag his back feet until they were bloody or be almost immobile. The amazing animal loving community came together to help get Rex more care, so he went for a specialist visit to Ottawa. This meant the padding between two of his lower, spinal vertebrae was misplaced and being pinched. In early March, Rex had surgery to correct the compression. Following a successful surgery, he underwent rehabilitation to regain his strength and mobility; he was so lucky to find himself in a home dedicated to getting him back on his feet. Rex stabilized, his fosters went above and beyond to see him through each and every issue, which included a thyroid condition and aggressive arthritis. His medical regime requires attentiveness, and symptoms of different conditions will emerge from time to time, but his seizures, irritable bowel disease, pain, and thyroid condition have all found points of relative resolution. Rex medically had stabilized, so his move out to the country in the spring of was a chance for his personality to blossom. Rex has become more patient, engaging and has grown into a great companion in his long-term foster home. He plays with other dogs, diligently watches their chickens, and herds their daughter. Rex is almost never without a ball in his mouth and keeps up with the pack as they rush down to a nearby pond, the almost daily swim has been helpful for regaining mobility. Rex lives a wonderful, shepherd like life. Frosty is a little shy at first, but he does get along with people of all ages as well as other dogs and even cats! Frosty loves the companionship of other dogs and learns a lot from them. Frosty is an absolute love-bug. He is a playful pup who loves running around the back yard, chasing tennis balls, shaking and tossing his squeaky toys, and chewing frozen marrow bones. He loves to lay at your feet at night while you watch TV or snuggle in bed with you if allowed. He will follow you everywhere and lay wherever you are. He walks very well on a leash using a harness. Frosty spent his early life on the end of a chain and would like his new home to have a fenced yard so he can be free to get the puppy zoomies and chase balls! Frosty has already learned many commands and has even had some foundation training in agility. Frosty is a very sweet boy who just worships his people. To help determine the personality of the dog that would best suit the home and family. However, not every dog is appropriate for every home. We will work with you to find the dog that is best suited for your home, family and lifestyle. We want you to get a dog that will enrich your life and delight you and we want each one of our dogs to have a home and family that thinks he or she is the absolute best dog on the planet. Our Adoption Coordinator takes over at this point in the process. She will look at your application and home visit report and will send your application to the foster home that has a dog she thinks you might be interested in. The foster home will either call or e-mail you with some information about the dog. You should ask as many questions as you feel necessary to understand whether this dog is the "one" for you. If you don't think one sounds just right, just let the foster home or the Adoption Coordinator know and we will look for a different dog. If you can tell us why a particular dog didn't appeal to you, it will help us look at other dogs in our program that might be more suitable. Please do not feel pressured to adopt any dog that you aren't absolutely comfortable about adopting! Each of us loves our foster dogs, but we realize that he or she might not be the right dog for every family or home. We do not feel offended or hurt if you decide you would rather adopt a dog other than our personal foster dog. After all, our goal is to get our foster dog into a home where she or he will be truly treasured. Depending on the distances involved, we have various options available, which we can discuss prior to finalize the adoption. Bear in mind, that the transportation, depending on the distances involved, the speed with which you want to receive the dog and sometimes just plain luck, may involve some additional expense and almost always require you to drive some distance to pick up the dog.
