So, in , he bred a yellow retriever named Nous with a liver-colored Tweed Water Spaniel named Belle. The result? Their coats are made up of two layers—the long, silky, waterproof outercoat and soft, warming undercoat—and act as insulators against all types of weather. Video of English Bulldogge Puppies History This is a comparatively new bred and was developed due to the initiatives taken by one Mr. David Leavitt of Pennsylvania who aimed in creating a breed possessing the looks and athletic nature of the dog used for bull baiting but with a lesser degree of aggressiveness. It was decided to include half of the English Bulldog blood, one-sixth of Bull Mastiff and American Bulldog and one-sixth of the other breeds. The outcome of these crosses was the Old English Bulldogge. In Leavitt tried to maintain the authenticity of the dogs which he bred and named them as Leavitt Bulldogges, with the Leavitt Bulldog Association being formed in .The UKC recognized them completely in .Olde English Bulldogge vs. The Old English Bulldogge has a lesser chance of suffering from breathing difficulties in comparison to the English Bulldog because of its broad nostrils and long muzzle. Temperament and Personality Besides making for remarkable family pets because of their docile and friendly nature, they are also fearless protectors fitting the bill of a perfect watchdog. Though they share a good rapport with children of the family, emerging as their perfect playmate, this breed may not be amicable to other dogs, especially if they are not a part of its family. Care Exercise Because of their agile, muscular and athletic nature, they have high exercise needs, requiring daily walks and sufficient playtime in a fenced yard. However, avoid taking them out when the temperatures are too high or low. When indoors give a lot of chewable toys to keep them engaged as they have a tendency to chew up things when bored. Grooming Since they shed moderately, brush their coat once in a week to maintain the shine. Bathe it when needed, and also trim its nails, clean its eyes and ears as well as brush its teeth to maintain proper hygiene. Health Problems They are a healthy breed compared to other bull dog varieties and are not known to suffer from any genetic issues. However, bloating and hip dysplasias as well as insensitivity to heat are the common problems faced by them. Training They are friendly pets but could be stubborn at times, needing firm handling. Give it socialization training since its puppy days so that it may learn to differentiate between the god and the bad, thus accepting a friend and being defensive at the sight of a foe. Obedience training, particularly teaching it commands help it in eliminating its unacceptable behavior like chewing. Feeding Good quality dry dog food coupled with a nutritious homemade meal would keep your English Bulldogge healthy. Temperament Olde English Bulldogges are docile, but capable and protective, fearless and athletic, fierce-looking, determined and courageous, bold and friendly around their family and friends, but fearless adversaries to anyone who threatens their masters or property. This breed likes to chew and should be supplied with plenty of toys and bones. Nylabones and rubber Kong toys are highly recommended. Rawhides, soft rubber and stuffed toys are unsafe, for they are easily shredded or swallowed whole. Olde English Bulldogges are so eager to please that they may overexert themselves in an effort to do whatever is asked of them. An owner who displays a natural authority toward the dog, socialization and obedience training are important. It is best to channel high energy individuals to some type of work and exercise. The objective in training this dog is to achieve pack leader status. It is a natural instinct for a dog to have an order in its pack. When we humans live with dogs , we become their pack. The entire pack cooperates under a single leader. Lines are clearly defined and rules are set. Because a dog communicates his displeasure with growling and eventually biting, all other humans MUST be higher up in the order than the dog. The humans must be the ones making the decisions, not the dogs. That is the only way your relationship with your dog can be a complete success. This breed tends to drool and slobber. Height, Weight Height: Males 17 - 20 inches 43 - 51 cm Females 16 - 19 inches 40 - 48 kg Weight: Males 60 - 80 pounds 27 - 36 kg Females 50 - 70 pounds 22 - 31 kg Health Problems May be susceptible to bloat —a painful and often fatal condition that can be brought on by too large a quantity of food consumed at one time. As with all large breeds, hip dysplasia sometimes occurs. Breeders are working hard to keep it out of the Olde English Bulldogge; therefore, no dog with bad hips is bred. Living Conditions Olde English Bulldogges will adapt to almost any lifestyle. They should be protected from the extreme cold and heat, although they are not as susceptible as the AKC Bulldog. Exercise This breed needs to be taken on a daily pack walk to satisfy its migration instinct. When properly conditioned they can be active dogs, however, they are equally happy with moderate exercise. They can stay in relatively good shape with good muscle tone with only light exercise. These dogs are naturally slow, and because of their unique structure, they should not be encouraged to jump or engage in strenuous exercise as young pups. This breed is an average shedder. In he became disenchanted with English Bulldogs due to their breeding and breathing problems. David's goal was to produce a dog with the looks of the 18th century bulldog, with the temperament of today's English Bulldogs, yet healthy, without breathing problems, or all the other aliments today's English Bulldogs are prone to. This new breed can now breathe. Cesarean section births are not necessary. Artificial insemination, due to male ineptness and lack of drive, has been replaced by natural ties. Lifespan is over eleven years. All breeding stock has had hip x-rays. No dog with bad hips is bred. David says he is now achieving his goal of producing a Bulldog with the health and temperament to be able to serve people, instead of forcing people to serve him. David Leavitt is breeding them to more of a working lines type dog, while OEBKC is breeding the dogs as more of a family oriented dog.

We all know cats are typically the fur family members to use a litter box. But what about dogs? Are there any good arguments for litter box training your canine friend? A dog litter box? Or an artificial grass pad? So I rarely advise pet parents to skip this opportunity. That said, there are a few instances when using a dog litter box is preferable. Is it right for your dog? This is especially true if you have a small dog, or tiny tinkler as I call them, since they often have more difficulty holding their urine than bigger dogs. This leads to more accidents in the house and bigger frustrations, which puts a damper on your relationship. I wrote an entirely different article that goes into more detail about why your dog is peeing in the house. But if you live in an area that sees several feet of snow or is primarily paved and gets very hot, an indoor dog litter box might actually be safer for your pet. You or Your Dog Have Mobility Issues If you or your dog have mobility issues, dog litter box training might be a good idea. Some companies, like doggybathroom. All you need to do is change out the pads and keep the inside clean. This can be a good option for medium-sized dogs that raise their leg to pee. The downside is the cost. The pee pads are disposable and will need to be replaced frequently. If you want to use dog litter, the sides of the litter box should be low enough for your dog to easily step over but high enough to contain the litter. Now what about artificial grass pads? The initial investment for a grass pad like this one is minimal. Can Dogs Use Cat Litter? Yes, technically, dogs can use cat litter. However, cat litter can be harmful if ingested, which is a risk since our canine friends are known to eat strange things from time to time. Dog litter typically consists of larger, more absorbent pellets, which are safer if ingested. Some are also made with recycled material, like wood or paper. Pin me! Whether you choose a litter box or a grass pad, will your dog really use it? This is the million doggie bone question. Can pet parents actually get their pups to use a dog litter box? In many cases, the answer is yes, you can. Trying to contain a Bull Mastiff in a box while they do their business would be quite a feat! And large dogs tend to raise their leg to pee, so the sides of the dog litter box would have to be very high to avoid soaking surrounding objects. Step 1: Find the Right Spot When house training dogs, we usually bring them outside. Do this by getting a paper towel or pee pad containing a little of their urine and placing it where you want them to go. Step 3: Praise Them for Using the Right Spot Again, just as you would do if training a dog to go outside, be sure to give them lots of praise and some training treats when they do their business in the right spot. But with time, your dog will understand how to use their new pee spot. And of course, you want your home to be sanitary. Consider Using Deodorizing Litter Cats have famously used litter boxes for a long time, so pet product manufacturers have developed many unique products that absorb pee effectively and suppress odor. By offering your old dog accessible litter boxes, you can almost eliminate the possibility of accidents, all while empowering your aging dog. By giving your dog a huge amount of praise and an immediate reward, you can override any other thoughts they may have, like a compulsion to mark. Watch for Digging or Coprophagia Dog owners encounter some of the most common issues when litter box training their dogs are digging and coprophagia. Unfortunately, the best way to address these issues is using a different potty training method. Buy a Litter Box With High Sides To avoid accidental spills, you should consider buying a litter box made of sturdy material with high sides. These prevent spills with male dogs since they can block any splashing. A flat litter box tray has drawbacks but is significantly better for large dogs. Generally, you will have an easier time litter box training a smaller dog, as a large dog will have difficulty containing their mess in a cat litter box that is entirely too small for their body. If you are set on litter box training a large dog, you will need to get creative with what you use as the litter box itself — using a large metal tray or a shallow plastic storage bin may be your best bet! A small dog can use a standard large litter box and keep the mess in the potty area. High sided litter box, intened for dog use 4. Post navigation. It can be a rollercoaster of emotions, with several successes combining with moments of failure to finally reach a desired outcome. Some pups love to go outside to use the bathroom, but some individuals may be resistant to that idea. Some dog breeds are quite adaptive to the idea of litter box training. How do you convince your dog that the litter box is the best place to use the bathroom? It may take several months for some breeds to adapt, but puppies and adult dogs will eventually get to know the process. It is very easy to get the supplies that you need. Certain breeds of dog can excel with litter box training. The process is similar to what you would teach a cat, providing them with a large tray as a place to use the bathroom. If you give your pup a lot of positive reinforcement with this process, then it can be a rewarding experience that controls messes for you. Most breeds can adapt to this training option in a couple of weeks, and some individuals may take to it right away. You can eliminate the threat of urine odors and stains. Dogs that need to go to the bathroom will hold it until they no longer can. Litter box training your pup will help you to manage the problems with liquid waste because they can manage their bathroom needs independently of your presence. Litter box training allows for liquid and solid waste. This option gives your pup an opportunity to relieve themselves of the liquid and solid waste when it is time to go. There are several different varieties of litter from which to choose. Dog litter is similar to the products that you can find for kitties in the store. When you need to replace what is in the tray, then you can find everything from activated charcoal to paper pellets. Simple clay litters are sold almost everywhere to provide pet parents with a suitable entry-level option. If you have concerns about the odors that come from the tray, then try sprinkling some baking soda along the bottom of the box every time you empty it to have more control over this issue. It helps senior dogs who may have bladder control issues. If your dog is over the age of 8, then their senior status can impact how and when they need to relieve themselves. Instead of relying on diapers to manage the mess, you can work with your older pup on transitioning to the litter box. You can reduce the amount of physical pain they experience trying to walk outside, especially if you live in a high-rise apartment. They might not have enough time to let you know they need to go at that age too, so having a usable tray gives you mess containment. You will give confidence to some breeds with this training option. Some breeds, with the Maltese being the most notorious for the issue, can struggle to fully adapt to the idea of going outside. Their small bladder size can make it challenging to get them to a patch of grass on time. Instead of dealing with messes or scolding behaviors, you can create a positive environment that involves the litter tray instead. It works well for small breeds only. A bigger pup also means that more waste products must be managed, which could overwhelm the capabilities of this system. If your dog weighs more than 20 pounds, then you might want to look for an alternative solution for their bathroom needs. Some dogs love to dig in the litter tray. If your dog is a digger, then a litter box is not the best solution for your potty training needs. You will want to watch their behaviors during the training process as well since some individuals like to eat the litter or their waste after leaving it behind. There can be severe odors with a litter box. Cats do well with a litter box because the product absorbs their urine and covers up the odors of their waste — to an extent. Because dogs will leave more waste products behind, this training option can be quite odiferous, changing the entire environment of your home if you live in a small place. You might want to consider litter box training if you have a garage, laundry room, or bathroom that has venting in place that will help you to control air movement if it offers easy access and some privacy. The cost for the initial setup can be high for some pet parents. If you have a larger dog, then you must use a bigger container to hold all of the waste. Liquids will absorb into the litter, which means the container must have some capacity to manage the expansion. Male dogs need to have a tray with high sides. If you decide to pursue litter box training for your dog, then you will need to have a product that offers high sides if you have a male pup at home. There can be enthusiastic leg lifting when it is time to go to the bathroom, so something without the appropriate height will still encourage a mess in your home. Since a pup needs the tray to be low enough for them to step over it as well, this option tends to work better with female dogs unless you have a toy breed as a pet parent. You will need separate boxes for your pets. If you have a dog and a cat at home, then neither one will be satisfied with the idea of sharing a little box. Pet parents who try to force this issue will often encourage their cats to spray urine throughout the room with their little box as a way to mark their territory. Dogs can be the same way. You might even need to have separate trays for each pup at home if you have a pack. Placement away from other items that your dog might think is part of the litter box, like an area rug, scratching post, or another upright item, is essential for success. A dog litter box needs to be cleaned every day. Many pups refuse to use this option if their tray is not clean. The only advantage here for some pet parents is that you get to pick up the waste inside instead of outside. The litter can get into the spaces between the pads and their paw. Unless you use paper products, this waste can cause small injuries that can lead to swelling and infections that could restrict their movement. It will take some time and plenty of patience to teach your dog how to use a litter box. Although some pups never take to this idea very well, most small breeds can eventually learn this skill. Do you really have a house dog if they are spending half of their time outside trying to go to the bathroom?

Instead, they are always easygoing and friendly. And they always enjoy making friends with new people. The dogs are also friendly to strangers. When they meet unfamiliar people, their first reaction is one of curiosity rather than protection. They are the kind that would meet your guests and find a safe place to stay while you chat with your guests. It is one of the best designer dogs since he is not an unruly or an off-character dog. Although Shephounds may seem a bit reserved at first, they normally get along with other dogs within a short period of time. As such, the German Greyhound is a friendly dog that makes a great family pet. When it comes to barking, both Greyhounds and German Shepherds tend to be very vocal and can howl or bark frequently. Training A German Shepherd Greyhound Mix The Greyhound Shepherd is trainable if you are ready to dedicate at least 30 minutes each day in training your puppy. They are not particularly easy to train, but they are also not so challenging. They are generally somewhere in between. GSDs are intelligent and easy to train. Greyhounds, on the other hand, tend to be stubborn and can be difficult to train. Therefore, you should start housetraining your Shephound as soon as you bring them home. You should actually dedicate some time to housetrain them each day. Training your German Greyhound early will help prevent behavioral issues from developing in your pup. With patience and consistency, you can successfully train your Greyhound Mixed with German Shepherd. But if you are not confident enough, you can always seek professional advice and training. A good dog trainer can successfully train your dog so you end up with a well-behaved family pet. Exercise Needs It is difficult to know how much each German Greyhound will require. Generally, the German Shepherd requires more exercise than the Greyhound. A German Shepherd needs one to two hours of daily exercise while a Greyhound will do fine with a minute walk each day. Your German Greyhound will most likely be somewhere in the middle. However, both parent breeds require more exercise than smaller dogs. Be sure to provide your Greyhound Shepherd with enough room to play and run around. Also, take your pooch on a walk once or twice each day for at least 30 minutes. Since the German Shepherd parent is intelligent, you also want to provide your Greyhound Shepherd with interactive dog toys to help keep him occupied and mentally stimulated. In order to know the grooming needs of German Shepherd Greyhound mixes, we need to study the grooming requirements of each parent breed. A German Shepherd should be brushed after every one or two days. Since their coat has a soft undercoat and a coarse outer coat, they shed all-year-round and they also blow their coat twice per year. A simple rundown with a piece of cloth at least once a week should be enough for these pups. Both Greyhounds and German Shepherds need a bath at least once a month. Apart from brushing and bathing, you should trim their nails from time to time to prevent them from splitting. Also, check and clean their ears regularly for dirt or wax buildup to prevent infections. Regular tooth brushing is also essential for your Greyhound German Shepherd Mix. This breed comes in a variety of colors, and while these dogs always look like a mixture of a Greyhound and a German Shepherd, you never know which look will be dominant. As is the case with their parents, this is a medium to large-sized dog , with a greater chance of being large. While Greyhounds normally have a shorter coat of hair, you will notice that the coat on this breed will more resemble the medium-length coarseness of the Shepherd. Because of this, your Greyhound German requires more hygienic maintenance than a Greyhound. Regular brushing and bathing is recommended with this breed. Like both parent breeds, this is an active dog that is athletically built. When you decide to take this pet into your life, you are also deciding to play that much more! When playing, this breed loves to get rowdy! They may seem disinterested in people at first, but once you have their trust, you have a play partner for life. Greyhound parents have a long history. While many people associate greyhounds with the racetrack, those who study history know them from the distant past. The earliest signs of Greyhounds come from ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics; the earliest ones are purported to be as old as 8, years. Greyhounds are visible with famous Egyptian figures such as Cleopatra and King Tutankhamen. In fact, the Greyhound was so highly revered they were seen as gods that the only death more important in a family was that of a son, and to kill a Greyhound meant being sentenced to death. Esteemed Grecians who visited Egypt were able to bring a few dogs back to Greece. The Greyhound became a worldly dog during the Roman Empire, when the Romans, who brought their Greyhounds everywhere, took them to Britain and Ireland. Eventually, from Europe, they made their way to America. No one is sure about the origin of the name. German Shepherd genetics make them super versatile. After 7, years of the Greyhound, the German Shepherd was born. One look at the name, and you can take a pretty good guess at where most people think it originated. They first appeared in after decades of Europeans attempting to standardize breeds. Their name is quite literal: Bred by shepherds in Germany, these dogs were meant to make life easier for the German farmer. These dogs were bred to be all the things that we think of German Shepherds now: smart, strong, and loyal, with a great sense of smell. While early breeders had success, results still varied from one location to the next, most notably in appearance. In , the Phylax Society was formed to help the standardization process, but in-fighting over whether the dog should be cute or hard working led to the demise of this group after only three years of operation. Fortunately, this inspired many to attempt to breed their own version of the Shepherd. This leads us to , when an ex-member of the Phylax Society, Max Von Stephanitz, attended a dog show and had a similar reaction that we all do when we see a dog, which was the need to go give it a hug. In his case, it ended up being a historic moment, as the dog he laid his eyes on was a Shepherd named Hektor, whom he immediately purchased. The rest, as they bark, is history. Well, not quite — there was a bump in the road for the name of the dog in the s and 40s. They changed the name of the breed to the Alsatian Wolf Dog, which was then adopted by other Kennel Clubs around the world. In the 70s, the breed was once again officially recognized as the German Shepherd While the German Shepherd is a wonderful family dog, it is still primarily used as a working dog by police forces, military, and other groups. Mixing the purebred parents has its benefits. This lovely hybrid has the perfect combination of ideal dog traits. They are built to be loyal, caring, affectionate, and cuddly. When you want to spend the day in bed, they will be the first to snuggle in next to you. The Shepherd Hound loves to cuddle and can be every bit as lazy as the laziest fluff balls on the planet. Are These Dogs Good for Families? However, each breed wil offer a friendly and sweet companion to any other fur babies you have in your home. Here are nine health problems common to a German Shepherd Mix Greyhound: 1. Cherry eye Unlike us humans, our dogs have 3 instead of 2 eyelids and under that third eyelid is the nictitans gland. Though this condition does not require an emergency trip to the vet, if not addressed, a prolapsed nictitans gland reduces tear production and dry eyes. Severe cases can cause blindness. Epilepsy This is a neurological problem wherein the exact cause is hard to identify. There is no cure, instead, medications and a change to a vet-prescribed diet can help reduce the frequency and severity of the seizures. Skin infections Skin problems arising from ticks , fleas, food, or a sudden change in temperature may cause some dogs to suffer from skin allergies. The symptoms are itching, reddening of the skin, or hair loss. Hip dysplasia Hip dysplasia is a developmental condition that results from a hip deformity. Blame it on genetics, big dogs such as a German Shepherd is susceptible to this condition. One of the causes is playing around after eating a large amount of food. This requires an emergency trip to the vet. If not, a dog can die from a bloated stomach. Canine degenerative myelopathy Canine degenerative myelopathy is a disease that is caused by the breaking down of white matter in the spinal cord. This results in weakness and eventually paralysis. It commonly affects older dogs. The first few symptoms are wobbling and pain while getting up. Osteosarcoma Osteosarcoma in dogs is a very painful bone tumor in dogs. It is more commonly found among larger dog breeds rather than small dog breeds. Elbow dysplasia This disease is also a developmental abnormality where the three bones in the elbow joint fail to fit together. This is more common among larger dog breeds. Cataract Aside from age, canine cataracts can also be caused by an eye lens disease, diabetes, or nutritional deficiency. German Shepherd Greyhound Mix lifespan If you provide your German Shepherd Greyhound Mix with proper nutrition, exercise, and regular trips to the vet for wellness exams, you can enjoy their company and companionship for an average of 9 to 14 years. You may also want to attend dog shows because in almost all cases, dog handlers can introduce you to other German Shepherd Mix breeders. Keep in mind that when you are dealing with German Shepherd Greyhound Mix breeders, always expect the breeder to show you the mother with her puppies. You should also expect the breeders to give you an insurance document. This way, in case the puppy gets sick within a certain timeframe, you will get a puppy replacement or the breeder will be the one to shoulder the treatment expenses. Generally speaking, male puppies are more active, playful, and territorial. Plus, male dogs tend to urine mark more often than female dogs. On the one hand, a female Greyhound German Shepherd Mix puppy will begin to go into heat by around 6 months of age. This equates to more work because of bloodstains around the house. Regardless of your choice, your German Shepherd Greyhound Mix puppy should have received two vaccinations, been dewormed, and microchipped before you bring him or her home. GSD-Greyhound mix puppies can inherit either of the two coat types and so their appearance will greatly depend on which parent they take after. Apart from length and texture, the coat color could also be one of a great number of possibilities. Given all these possibilities, German Shepherd-Greyhound crosses tend to look vastly different from one another. Typically, all they need is a weekly rubdown using a hound glove or a damp cloth. In contrast, those that take their coats after their German Shepherd side have double coats that shed steadily throughout the year and then more heavily twice a year. GSDs need to be brushed at least once a week, but more frequently during the shedding season. As for the rest of their grooming requirements, a Greyhound-German Shepherd mix will need regular bathing and frequent tooth brushing. Strength Even though Greyhounds are not particularly known for its strength, its offspring with a GSD will undoubtedly be a strong dog. This is not just because of its size but also because it can take its strength after its German Shepherd parent. Additionally, its size alone can make it capable of developing great strength. GSD-Greyhound crosses are expected to run somewhere between those speeds. Exercise Requirement Because German Shepherds are incredibly energetic and Greyhounds even more so, you should be ready to give the Greyhound GSD mix plenty of opportunities to exercise. Ideally, they would get at least an hour of physical exercise per day apart from having access to ample space where they can run and play independently. Apart from physical exercise, the GSD-Greyhound cross needs opportunities to use their mental faculties so that they stay on their best behavior. They need toys and activities that stimulate their brains. Generally, this need can be met through regular training exercises. Nevertheless, what they lack in intelligence, they make up for in their eagerness to please their humans. The trainability of a Greyhound German Shepherd mix will depend on which parent they take after. Although the intellect of GSD-Greyhound mixes can vary greatly, you can at least expect them to be easily housetrained and learn basic obedience with ease. Temperament German Shepherd-Greyhound crosses are confident and courageous dogs. With proper training and socialization, they can be excellent family dogs. However, because of the prey drive they might inherit from their Greyhound parent, they might need extra training and supervision if they need to share a home with smaller animals. Additionally, Greyhound-GSDs are generally even-tempered and they are known to be gentle with their family members. Health German Shepherd-Greyhound mixes are generally healthy, although they are susceptible to life-threatening bloat. Owners of this crossbreed should talk to a vet about how to avoid this condition. Additionally, hip and elbow dysplasia are conditions that the German Shepherd-Greyhound cross can inherit from their GSD parent. From the Greyhound side, the most serious health concern is a genetic condition called Greyhound Polyneuropathy. This is a progressive neurological disorder that severely affects their muscles. Lifespan A Greyhound-German Shepherd mix can be expected to live between 10 and 14 years. Like all other dogs, they can live beyond the life expectancy of their parents when they are given a balanced, high-quality diet. Ample exercise, proper hygiene, and regular vet examinations will further enable them to lead long and happy lives. By enrolling in this program, dogs that are not eligible for purebred registration and are disqualified from conformation events can participate in many other AKC events. These include canine sports like Agility , Flyball , and Diving Dogs. The GSD Greyhound mix is not very common. So, professional breeders do not have enough financial incentive to propagate this cross. Final Thoughts A Greyhound German Shepherd mix is undeniably a beautiful dog with a noble quality and a pleasing personality. Nevertheless, it is a large dog with boundless energy. A Greyhound shepherd is a mix between a German Shepherd and a Greyhound. Both German shepherds and Greyhounds are large dogs, and so is the Greyhound Shepherd. Every German Shepherd Greyhound mix will be different. It is impossible to know which traits the mixed pup will inherit from its father and which traits it will get from its mother. However, most German Shepherd Greyhound mixes share some specific characteristics. Both German Shepherds and Greyhounds are large dogs, so you can expect a Greyhound Shepherd to be a medium to a large dog as well. You can also expect this mix to have a coat of hair that is somewhat in between the short hair of a Greyhound and the thicker, coarser hair of a German Shepherd. Both German Shepherds and Greyhounds are athletic dogs. The Greyhound, in particular, is very muscular and can run very fast. As such, you can expect a mixed dog to be athletic as well and probably stronger and more muscular than a regular German shepherd. Like the German Shepherd, the Greyhound is very loving, affectionate, and loyal. And as such, whether a mixed pup takes after its mother or father, you can expect it to be gentle, fun-loving, loyal, and affectionate, both with you and your kids. As for its exact appearance, expect a lot of variety depending on how much it takes after its mother or father. Regardless, this particular mix is always cute and adorable. Before you get any dog, it is important to know what the breed is like. Are they small or large? Gentle or aggressive? Fun-loving or introverted? Athletic or restful? Will it bark, or is it almost always quiet? It is important to know what you are looking for as well and what you can handle. As mentioned, the Greyhound Shepherd is a large dog. You will need enough space to keep it satisfied. If you have very little extra room in your apartment, you might want to consider getting a smaller dog. A male German Shepherd Greyhound mix can be up to 30 inches tall though it is likely to be a couple of inches shorter if it has more German Shepherd traits. Also, remember that both German Shepherds and Greyhounds love to run around. After all, German Shepherds were bred for shepherding purposes and have evolved to live in big, open spaces. Greyhounds love open spaces as well. If you have a fenced in front or back yard where your dog can run around and enjoy itself, as well as enough room in the house, a Greyhound Shepherd is a good choice. Greyhounds are not known to be aggressive, and neither are German Shepherds. In fact, both are generally described as docile and gentle. However, Greyhounds are extremely fast and very strong dogs, and many German Shepherd Greyhound mixes will be as well. As such, it is important to know how to train your dog properly. If you are a first-time dog owner and are looking for a gentle dog, a Greyhound Shepherd should not be removed from the running automatically. However, be aware that it will probably be strong, fast, and powerful, and if you have small kids around, it might be better to get a smaller dog. Important Note If you are planning on adopting an abandoned German Shepherd Greyhound mix, they may be traumatized and living in a state of fear. This is because many Greyhounds are adopted out of a former life of being abused as racing dogs. The trauma that a dog suffers from this unethical practice can cause deeply ingrained and long lasting fear in a Greyhound. Because of this, it is very important that you be prepared to spend adequate time training this mix through positive reinforcement. If you do not have the time or confidence to do this yourself, be sure that you are prepared to reach out to a professional dog trainer, as neglecting this step will lead to a lower quality of life for your dog, and may even bring about some very preventable aggression issues. Although they are not usually acquired to be guard dogs, they are fiercely loyal and will stand up for you until the end. Greyhounds, in particular, are lightning-fast and are sometimes bought for racing purposes. They are one of the most easily recognizable dog breeds and are popular in households worldwide. He went on to found a club for German Shepherds, with his own German Shepherd being an original club member. Eventually, Max von Stephanitz realized that not only were German Shepherds great for herding, but they would also serve as great companions and helpers in the police and military. For that reason, he encouraged their use in police work, which is why so many are used in policing today. German shepherds are kind, loyal, affectionate, wise, and easy to train. They are also athletic and generally very healthy and able dogs. They are great with kids and forever loyal. They are tall dogs, with the average male being between inches centimeters. German Shepherds have thick, coarse hair, so they will shed a lot. As such, they require a lot of maintenance. German Shepherd owners know how much they love to run outside. If you have a large yard, they will really enjoy themselves. On the other hand, if you have a garden or have carefully planted flowers and other plants, your German Shepherd can end up ruining them. Like all dogs, German shepherds must be trained. Here are some things to know before getting a German Shepherd: Greyhound Basic Facts Greyhounds are very large dogs as well, with an average male growing up to 30 inches tall. Unlike German Shepherds, they are very skinny without a lot of hair. In fact, they look very different from German Shepherds, which is why the German shepherd Greyhound mix has a lot of potential for variety. Greyhounds, as mentioned, are very fast dogs. Because they can run up to 45 miles an hour, they have been historically bred to be hunting dogs. They can hunt rabbits, foxes, and even larger animals such as deer. Unfortunately, some people also breed them for racing. However, this does not mean that they can not be aggressive. When not trained properly, or if they adopted and living under a state of constant fear, they can become aggressive. Many times, however, they are just trying to play, and this is mistaken for aggression. Greyhounds are also generally obedient and easy to train. Here are some things to know before getting a Greyhound: What to Expect With the German Shepherd Greyhound Mix Now that you know a little about the German Shepherd and the Greyhound, you can understand what you might be getting with the German shepherd Greyhound mix. Here are some things to expect: Loyalty As mentioned, both the German Shepherd and the Greyhound are extremely loyal. Because of this, you can expect a Greyhound Shepherd to be very loyal as well. If you are looking for a companion to double as a guard dog, a Greyhound Shepherd would be a good choice, not because they are aggressive dogs but because they are fiercely loyal until the end. If your sole purpose of getting a dog is to get a guard dog , a Greyhound Shepherd is probably not the best bet. Gentleness Since both German Shepherds and Greyhounds are gentle, you can expect a Greyhound Shepherd to be gentle as well. This is why it is important to be mindful if you have small children. Yes, your Greyhound Shepherd might be gentle, but it is also quick and strong. While it may just be playing and it probably only means well, it can still end up hurting a small child or baby by mistake. Greyhounds typically are thin and have a thin coat of hair. German Shepherds, on the other hand, have rough, thick, coarse hair. They also shed a lot. Most Greyhound Shepherds will be somewhere in between. They will likely shed a fair amount of hair, but not as much as a German Shepherd, and it will probably require more maintenance and cleaning than a Greyhound, but probably not as much as a German shepherd. Health Concerns Most Greyhound Shepherds are generally healthy. However, like all dogs, they are susceptible to health problems. As a dog owner, it is important to know about these problems so that you can properly care for your dog and take them to the vet in a timely manner if you spot any warning signs or red flags. Cherry Eye Dogs have a third eyelid, which can become swollen. This is known as cherry eye. The exact cause of cherry eye is unknown it may be hereditary , but it can be treated through anti-inflammatory medications or surgery. Bloat What is commonly known as bloat is actually officially called Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus. Sometimes, it is also referred to as GDV. This can happen rather quickly. And if this does happen, their intestines can flip on themselves. GDV or bloat can be life-threatening to your dog. That is why it must be treated right away. Since Greyhound Shepherds are large dogs, they are more susceptible to bloat. Although it is more common in deep-chested dogs, it has been reported in Greyhounds as well. Symptoms can include retching without anything coming out, a swollen abdomen, and breathing difficulty. Again, GDV is life-threatening and must be treated right away. Surgery will be required. Joint Problems Greyhound Shepherds can suffer from hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia. Hip dysplasia is genetic and refers to an abnormality and deformity of the hip, and elbow dysplasia refers to the deformity of the elbow. Hip and elbow dysplasia can lead to arthritis and problems such as difficulty moving around and a decreased range of motion. It is important to treat dysplasia with surgery before it gets worse and turns into degenerative joint disease. Dysplasia is common in larger dogs, which is why Greyhound Shepherds are at risk. Greyhound shepherds can also suffer from degenerative myelopathy , which is a spinal cord disease. Skin Conditions Like all dogs, Greyhound Shepherds can suffer from various skin conditions. These can include bacterial infections such as strep, fungal infections, and cysts. They can also include warts and irritation. Fortunately, most skin conditions can be treated and alleviated. UTIs can be painful and, if left untreated, can lead to more serious problems. If your dog is having trouble urinating or is bleeding while urinating, get it checked by your vet. Depending on the cause of the infection, it may be simple to treat. Epilepsy Dogs can experience seizures for a number of reasons. It may be due to a metabolic problem like low blood sugar or the result of a stroke or brain tumor, but it can be inherited. Since Greyhounds often experience this type of seizure, you can expect a Greyhound Shepherd to be at risk as well. Trainability In general, it is easy to train a Greyhound Shepherd because of their high level of intelligence. However, remember that they are powerful and strong too. You should have some experience with training dogs. You can also get a professional trainer to help. Be gentle with them, but be firm when needed — always using positive reinforcement. Be consistent and give them rewards to motivate them. Temperament If you train your Greyhound Shepherd properly, you can expect it to be kind and gentle. They may get excited at times and want to run around, and that is okay. Make sure they have a way to release their pent-up energy so that they can continue being kind, gentle, and loving. If they feel trapped and cooped up, they are more likely to be unhappy or even aggressive. Nutritional Requirements Greyhound Shepherds are large dogs, so they will need a lot of food to help them stay strong and healthy. Make sure they get a lot of calories and protein but make sure your dog is getting vitamins and minerals through vegetables as well. Protein can come from sources such as raw beef and lamb. However, make sure not to overfeed your dog, as obesity can lead to many problems , including diabetes and joint issues. If you are unsure, ask your vet for guidance, as each dog is different. Exercise Requirements It is hard to say how much exercise your Shephound will need. German Shepherds generally need more exercise than Greyhounds; a Greyhound might be fine after a daily minute walk, while a German shepherd might need up to two hours of exercise. Your Greyhound Shepherd will probably fall in somewhere in between. Nonetheless, both breeds need more exercise than a smaller breed. Make sure to provide a Shephound room to run around and take it on a walk at least once or twice a day for minutes. If they need more time to run around, give it to them, but if they just want to relax, that is okay as well. Cost Greyhounds are quite expensive, and German shepherds are not cheap either. Greyhound Shepherds are also rare, so you can expect the cost to go up because of that. If you are on a small budget, a Greyhound Shepherd is not for you unless you plan on adopting one that happens to be available. Final Thoughts Greyhound Shepherds are extremely intelligent, loving, and loyal dogs. They are perfect if you want a large but gentle dog that is easy to train and who will be loyal and protect you. However, they are not cheap, but they are most certainly worth the cost! As we have established, this crossbreed is a mix between a German Shepherd and a Greyhound. They are both large breeds of dog, so as you would expect, the result of this cross-breeding is also a big dog. These terms are used interchangeably to describe this crossbreed. As these dogs are a mix, no two puppies will be the same. This is because it is impossible to know what personality traits and characteristics will be taken from each breed, making every dog different. Despite this, there are a few things that you can expect from this crossbreed. The main one being its size. You can generally determine the size that a litter of puppies will grow to by looking at the parents. As both German Shepherds and Greyhounds are large breed dogs, you can rest assured that the puppies will also be large. You can also expect them to be muscular, affectionate, and loyal. Is this the right mixed breed for You? Before you welcome any dog into your home, you need to decide if this is the right breed for you. Here are some of the key things that you need to consider before making that decision: Time One of the most important things that you need to consider before buying a Shephound, or any dog for that matter, is if you have the time to dedicate to this dog. Dogs are hard work, and they require a lot of time and effort if you want them to be well-behaved and loyal. This is especially important with Shephounds as both the Greyhound and German Shepherd breeds can be nervous at times. A lot of this is down to the fact that both breeds have been treated badly historically. A lot of Greyhounds are traumatized from a history of being forced to race against their will, and because of this, it can take a lot of time for these dogs to adjust to being family pets. Likewise, a lot of German Shepherds have lived their lives as working dogs, so it can take a little while for them to adjust to being pets too. You should bear this in mind when buying a Shephound. Space Another major thing that you need to consider before bringing a Shephound into your home is whether, or not, you have the space for a dog of this size. While they may be small when they are puppies, these puppies quickly grow into large dogs, so it is very important that you have enough space in your home for them. Nothing can prepare you for quite how big these dogs are, and as they grow in your home, they can quickly shrink your house. But, these dogs are large and heavy, so they take up a lot of space. If you only have a small house, or you have a large but busy house, then you might want to consider if you have the physical space to give to this dog before bringing one home. Professional Training Finally, you need to consider your provisions for giving this breed professional dog training. Both Greyhounds and German Shepherds are highly intelligent dogs, so they will require training. Both Greyhounds and German Shepherds often have a very high prey drive , and this can make them very difficult to control when you are out walking them. This can be very difficult to do, which is why you should ensure that you have access to a professional trainer to help you. But, as both Greyhounds and German Shepherds are breeds that have existed for centuries, there are lots of facts that we know about these dogs. Without a doubt, German Shepherds are one of the most striking dog breeds in the world. With just a single look, you can easily identify one of these breeds by their classic black and tan markings, wonderful gait, and simply breathtaking look. They are famous for being one of the most loyal dog breeds to exist and are also well-known for being fiercely protective of their owner and their pack. These dogs absolutely adore being outdoors, and this is one of the main reasons why they make such wonderful herding dogs. This is, after all, where their name comes from. Instead, they are better known for being used as working dogs in the military, police , and even as support dogs for people who are blind or living with other disabilities. The main reason why these dogs are so commonly used as working dogs is that they are so easy to train. German Shepherds are undoubtedly one of the most intelligent breeds on the planet. Anyone who has ever owned a German Shepherd will tell you that this breed can learn a trick after only one or two goes, they simply are that smart. They are affectionate, loyal, and kind. They really do make the perfect companion, and you know that you are never alone as long as you have a German Shepherd by your side. These dogs are energetic and healthy, and absolutely wonderful with children and other pets. This is why they are one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. As we mentioned earlier, there are a lot of similarities between these two breeds, and this is why this crossbreed works so well. Just like German Shepherds, Greyhounds are also a large breed of dog. In terms of height, they are very similar, but Greyhounds are a lot thinner than German Shepherds. As Greyhounds were bred to run, they are extremely skinny, to the point where you can often see their ribs. While German Shepherd dogs are bred to be a lot bulkier. Yes, Greyhounds do look very slim, but this is because they carry absolutely zero body fat. Just by looking at a Greyhound, you can see how muscular they are, and this is partly aided by the fact that they have a very short coat. Greyhounds are most famous for being fast. These dogs have been racing dogs, and unfortunately, this practice still goes on today. Due to the shape of their body, Greyhounds are able to reach speeds of up to 45 miles per hour, which is why they have been used in racing. But traditionally, Greyhounds were bred as hunting dogs with the ability to hunt foxes, rabbits, and even deer. They are unbelievably calm, and will spend a lot of their time sleeping. Just like German Shepherds, Greyhounds are incredibly loving, and there is nothing that this breed likes more than cuddling up to their owner and giving them lots of wet kisses. While they will be loving to all members of their pack, Greyhounds tend to choose one member to be their person, and if that person is you then you are truly blessed. They are incredibly smart, and as long as they are trained, then these dogs will not become aggressive. This is why they make such wonderful pets. Key Characteristics of the German Shepherd Greyhound Mix Shephound We have looked at these breeds independently, but it is time that we look at them together. Every Shephound is different as it is a crossbreed, however, there are some key characteristics that you can expect. One is the fact that your puppy is going to have a lot of growing to do. Both German Shepherds and Greyhounds are breeds that transform a lot during the first 6 months of their life. So, this makes it difficult to tell what their coat is going to look like when they grow up. It is also partly because these two breeds have very different coats. German Shepherds have incredibly thick fur, with multiple different layers, while Greyhounds have very thin coats which help make them more aerodynamic. Due to this, it is impossible to tell exactly what your Shephounds coat is going to be. If your Shephound is a mixture of a short coat German Shepherd and a Greyhound, then you can expect the fur to be mid-way between the two. However, if your Shephound is part long-hair German Shepherd, then there is no knowing just how thick their coat will be. Gentle Something that you can almost guarantee from a Shephound is that they are going to be gentle. Both German Shepherds and Greyhounds are docile breeds, and they are well-known for being gentle around their owners. So, this is something that you can expect from a Shephound. But, these dogs will have moments of madness. While these dogs will be calm and gentle most of the time, there will be periods where they will be hyper. When this happens, it is important to remember that Shephounds are big dogs, and they are incredibly strong. Loyal But there is one thing which you can definitely guarantee from a Shephound, and it is their undying loyalty. So, whether you are looking for a Shephound as a guard dog or a companion, you can always trust your Shephound to be by your side. However, if you are looking for a dog to use as a guard dog, then a Shephound might not be the best choice. You would be much better off choosing a pedigree German Shepherd. But if you want a dog that has your back until the end, then a Shephound is absolutely perfect. All dogs suffer from health conditions, and the majority of breeds will have genetic predispositions to certain issues. Joint Problems The most prevalent potential health condition that your Shephound might suffer from is joint problems. In particular, hip and elbow dysplasia. This is a genetic condition where there is a deformity in the hip or the elbow, which can lead to limited mobility and arthritis as your dog ages. This is a common health issue for both German Shepherds and Greyhounds, which is why this is the condition that your dog is most likely to suffer from. In fact, this is a condition that most large dogs, and even large cats, suffer with. This condition is a degenerative disease, so the earlier that you pick up on it, the better. That way, you can treat it early and prevent your Shephound from suffering too greatly with this condition. Skin Conditions Another part of the body that both Greyhounds and German Shepherds often suffer with is their skin. Both breeds are genetically predisposed to skin conditions, so there is a fair chance that your Shephound could suffer from this too. In particular, German Shepherds are prone to allergies, which can lead to a lot of scratching and discomfort. Cherry Eye Something else that these breeds are often prone to suffering with is cherry eye. This condition displays itself as a red lump on the third eyelid. This red lump is actually an enlarged and swollen gland that has become infected due to allergies. All dogs are at risk of experiencing this, and it is a very common condition. So, just be prepared that you might have to go to your vet to get conditions like this treated if you get a German Shepherd Greyhound mix. Epilepsy The final condition that your Shephound might be prone to is epilepsy. This is a condition that a lot of Greyhounds develop, so there is a small chance that your Shephound may also suffer from this. Epilepsy affects dogs similarly to how it affects humans, so if your Greyhound Shepherd develops this condition, then they may experience seizures. Dogs can experience seizures with lots of different causes behind it. Some dogs will fit if they become too hot, or dehydrated. But, these seizures could be caused by a health condition such as epilepsy or diabetes. So, you should be prepared that this condition could also develop in your Shephound. If your German Shepherd Greyhound mix does begin to experience seizures, then you should seek veterinary advice immediately. German Shepherd Greyhound Mix Temperament One of the biggest influences on whether you will choose a dog breed, or not, is temperament. Everybody wants their dog to have a good temperament, and for their dog to be loving. This is why a lot of people purchase dogs based on the temperament of that breed. So what is the Shephound temperament like? As we have said, Greyhound Shepherds are incredibly loving dogs, and above all else, they are loyal. Fiercely loyal, in fact. Generally, these dogs have a calm temperament, and they are usually very gentle. Especially when they are around children and small animals. But, for the most part, these dogs are lovely. Walk them regularly, and train them well when they are young, and you will have a fiercely loyal companion for the rest of their life. Ability to Train Speaking of training, you may also be wondering how easy it is to train a German Shepherd Greyhound Mix. Well, as you might expect, it is usually very easy to train a Shephound. These dogs are incredibly intelligent, and because of this, they can often pick up tricks incredibly quickly. A lot of people are surprised at how quickly Shephounds can learn commands, and people are also often surprised at how early in their lives these dogs will begin learning. From as early as 8 weeks old, a German Shepherd Greyhound mix will begin listening to their owner and learning commands. So start early with training, and you will have a very well-behaved dog. Nutritional Requirements Shephounds are very large dogs, so they do have some nutritional requirements. You should avoid feeding them grains as this can lead to GDV a bloating condition , instead you should feed them lots of protein. Make sure their diet is well-balanced with protein, vitamins, minerals, and also high in calories. Exercise Requirements The amount of exercise that your German Shepherd Greyhound mix needs will differ depending on your specific dog. Greyhounds only need around 30 minutes of exercise a day, whereas German Shepherds can need up to 2 h ours. Find a happy medium and go with the amount of exercise that suits your dog. Cost These dogs are expensive. Shephounds are also very rare, so you should expect to spend anywhere in this region for a healthy German Shepherd Greyhound mix. Summary In short, this has been a complete guide to one of the most loving and loyal dog crossbreeds on the planet, the German Shepherd Greyhound mix. So, if you are considering this breed, read this guide before you buy.

Dog domestic dog The Labrador Retriever, or simply Labrador, is a British breed of retriever gun dog. It was developed in the United Kingdom from fishing dogs imported from the colony of Newfoundland now a province of Canada , and was named after the Labrador region of that colony. It is among the most commonly kept dogs in several countries, particularly in the European world. The Labrador is friendly, energetic, and playful. It may also be trained as a guide or assistance dog , or for rescue or therapy work. Another early advocate of these Newfoundland fishing dogs was the 2nd Earl of Malmesbury , who bred them for their expertise in waterfowling. The dogs Buccleuch Avon and Buccleuch Ned, given by Malmesbury to Buccleuch, were mated with bitches carrying blood from those originally imported by the 5th Duke and the 10th Earl of Home. The offspring are the ancestors of all modern Labradors. John's water dogs bred by European settlers in Newfoundland were first introduced to Britain from ships trading between Canada and Poole in Dorset. These were then bred with British hunting dogs to create what became known as the Labrador Retriever. Early writers have confused the Labrador with the much larger Newfoundland and the Lesser Newfoundland , with Charles St. John even referring to the Lesser Newfoundland as the Newfoundland. Colonel Peter Hawker describes the first Labrador as being not larger than an English Pointer , more often black than other colours, long in its head and nose with a deep chest, fine legs, and short and smooth coat, and did not carry its tail as highly as the Newfoundland. John's breed of these dogs [6] [7] in the fifth edition of his book Introductions to Young Sportsman, published in .Black Chocolate There is a great deal of variety among Labradors. The following characteristics are typical of the conformation show bred bench-bred lines of this breed in the United States and are based on the American Kennel Club standard. Size: Labradors are a medium-large breed. They should be as long from the withers to the base of the tail as they are from the floor to the withers. The AKC standard includes an ideal weight for dogs of 25—36 kg 55—80 lb and for bitches as 25—32 kg 55—70 lb. The coat is water-resistant, so the dog does not get cold when taking to the water in the winter. That means that the dog naturally has a slightly dry, oily coat. Acceptable colours are black, yellow, and chocolate. The eyes should be kind and expressive. Appropriate eye colours are brown and hazel. The lining around the eyes should be black. The ears should hang close to the head and be set slightly above the eyes. Jaws: The jaws should be strong and powerful. The muzzle should be of medium length and should not be too tapered. The jaws should hang slightly and curve gracefully back. Body: The body should have a powerful and muscular build. The tail and coat are designated "distinctive [or distinguishing] features" of the Labrador by both the Kennel Club and AKC. If a dog carried wild type alleles at all three loci, the dog will have a yellow coat. If a dog has a loss-of-function mutation at MC1R, it will also have a yellow coat, regardless of their genotype at the other two loci. Within the breed, this trait is not visible. Show and field lines[ edit ] Head and muzzle appearance: field left , and show right , showing the shorter muzzle length, more solid appearance head, and "pronounced" stop of the latter As a result of specialised breeding, there are significant differences between field and trial-bred and show-bred lines of Labradors. In the United States, the former are sometimes mistakenly referred to as "American" and the latter as "English", in fact, both field and show types are bred in both countries and all Labrador Retrievers are descended from British lines. In this experiment, German Shepherds had the highest chance of not completing it. However, German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers had a higher success rate after going through longer training than the training required for Labrador Retrievers. For retrieving the Labrador Retriever has a soft mouth , a trait that allows it to carry game and waterfowl without damaging it. It continues in that role today, along with the Leonberger , Newfoundland and Golden Retriever dogs; they are used at the Italian School of Canine Lifeguard. During the Vietnam War they were used as scout dogs to track down dead or wounded soldiers or enemy positions. Notable issues related to health and well-being include inherited disorders and obesity most are missing all or parts of the appetite-regulating POMC gene. As of , it was widely considered the most popular breed in the world. Image source, Slough Borough Council Image caption, Tepee the puppy was rescued under the Animal Welfare Act Raids have been carried out on two suspected puppy farms in Berkshire after a number of dogs died days after they were bought. They found two young Labrador puppies in serious need of medical attention. A Chihuahua, a Beagle, four adult Lurchers and two more Labrador puppies were also rescued. One of the very young Labrador puppies found was so ill with the parvovirus virus it had to be put to sleep straight away. The two puppies were found during a "test purchase" carried out at the Chalvey address before the raids. Ian Blake, neighbourhood enforcement team leader, said: "The adult dogs were found in a pen at the bottom of the garden, with only an upturned wheelie bin for shelter. They were all skinny, hungry and had skin and fur problems due to the poor conditions they had been kept in. No dogs were found at the Wexham address. Officers seized mobile phones and paperwork from both addresses and the occupants will be formally questioned as part of ongoing enquiries. The dogs are now being looked after at kennels. They believe the puppies are bred elsewhere in England and Wales and transported to Slough for sale and distribution. More on this story. Life Span Did You Know? Labrador Retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds. The Chocolate Labrador Retriever is not a distinct dog breed from other Labs, but it is a separate coat color variation that is specifically bred for. Similar to the other standard coat colors of Labrador Retrievers, Chocolate Labs are energetic dogs that get along well in a family setting. As a Retriever, they also make great hunting dogs and have also been known to fill other working dog roles including service dogs, guide dogs, search-and-rescue dogs, and more. They are even one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units. A point of interest is that all modern Chocolate Labrador Retrievers can be traced to three specific Black Labradors that lived during the s. Chocolate Labs are industrious little pups. They were bred for retrieval and will often sniff about for something to get into. They are also one of the most affectionate dog breeds and absolutely love being with their favorite humans. Properly socialized and well-trained, Labs are one of the kid-friendly dog breeds. They get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. They are famously even-tempered and playful. This makes them fantastic dogs for a growing family, as they tend to be gentle and patient with little ones. They can have a high prey drive. They usually do well with small pets within the family that they have been raised with or socialized around, but likely will still have the urge to chase other animals while out and about. They also tend to be open and friendly with strangers. After all, strangers are just more people to give them attention and play with them. Chocolate Labrador Retrievers may be high-energy dogs, but they are also highly adaptable. They will thrive in homes with fenced yards where they can run freely. They can adapt well to apartment living as well as long as they get plenty of daily exercise, attention, and mental stimulation. Their natural urge to dig and bark when they are bored or agitated can be quelled with a little training and exercise. Although they can handle some alone time, Labs love to be with their families and thrive on attention from them, so they do not like to spend long periods of time alone. Chocolate Labs also have a water-resistant double coat that makes them well-suited for most habitable climates. As with most dogs, they are sensitive to heat. Although they can handle some cold and will likely love to play in the snow, they are not a snow dog breed and may need to bundle up while out on walks in areas with harsher winters. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a Chocolate Labrador Retriever can include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, hereditary myopathy, and heart disease. There is also a condition with a genetic link called exercise-induced collapse EIC , which can occur in young adult Labradors. Carriers of this can be identified by DNA tests and it is advised that breeders test for this and avoid practices that would produce the disease. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies and reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both parents and about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a large, deep-chested dog breed, Labrador Retrievers are at a higher risk for bloat. Bloat in dogs can be dangerous and can quickly become fatal if the stomach flips gastric torsion. Chocolate Labrador Retrievers are incredible companions and are also one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners. Their energy can make them a handful at times, but their intelligence, adaptability, patience with people, and eagerness to please make them easy to train. Labs are one of the smartest dog breeds , so they pick up on things easily. As long as training is consistent and focused on positive reward and praise, a Chocolate Lab will do their best to respond as expected and will often exceed expectations. Chocolate Labs have a short, water-resistant coat that will shed year-round. Brushing a few times a week, daily brushing during seasonal shedding, and the occasional bath are all that are needed to keep a Lab coat healthy and looking great. They may need baths more often if they are avid swimmers, go on a lot of outdoor adventures, and get dirty a lot. Floppy ears tend to trap dirt, moisture, and debris. Proper dental care for dogs is imperative to help prevent painful dental diseases like gum disease or tooth decay later in life. You can also supplement your dental care efforts with vet-approved dental hygiene chews. Labrador Retrievers are one of the most active dog breeds and need a lot of daily activity to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough, but your Chocolate Labrador will likely be up for more activity if you are. One of the facts about Labrador Retrievers is that they have an extended puppyhood and tend to maintain that puppy-like energy and maturity until they are years old. Swimming can be a great lower-impact activity and Labrador Retrievers are one of the dog breeds that tend to love water. Between that, their water-resistant coat, and webbed toes, you may have trouble getting your Chocolate Lab out of the water. Fully-grown Chocolate Labrador Retrievers usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Chocolate Labs generally live for years on average. Fourteen years later, the American Kennel Club did the same in .Featured Chocolate Labrador Retriever Article.

Wrap Up Meet the Pugador Like all designer breeds, the Pugador can inherit traits from both parent breeds. Because Pugs and Labs are both loving and loyal breeds, the Pugador is a great family dog. Labs are athletic and eager to please. Exploring and going on outdoor adventures are essential activities for a happy and well-adjusted Lab. On the other hand, Pugs are affectionate dogs who are content with staying home and cuddling on the couch. They have moderate exercise needs, but they enjoy playing with their owner. They can be mischievous and even stubborn, but these small dogs are very loving and loyal. Each dog has a unique personality, and you can usually get an idea of what a puppy will be like if you can observe the parents. If you want to get a Pugador, you should talk to the breeder to find out more about the parents and the personality traits you can expect to find in your new companion. How Common Are Pugadors? Pugadors usually inherit the pushed-in nose that gives Pugs their unique look and sometimes get the curly tail that characterizes this breed. The result is an adorable pet with the traits you would expect to find in a Pug but with a larger body. How Big Do Pugadors Get? The size of a Pugador can vary from one individual to another and can be hard to predict since there is a significant size difference between the two parents. Labs are medium-sized dogs. Males are larger and weigh 65 to 80 lbs. A Pugador will be somewhere between the two breeds. It will look like a small Labrador or a large Pug. Pugs have moderate exercise needs. These small dogs are fine with a daily walk of about minutes. Pug owners should monitor their pets for signs of brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome and limit exercise if needed. On the other hand, Labradors belong to the sporting group. This breed is very active and needs at least 80 minutes of exercise a day. These dogs love to walk, run, play, swim, and hike. Pugs and Labs are at two opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to exercise needs, and Pugadors typically fall somewhere in the middle. You should aim for an hour of exercise a day and adjust how much exercise your Pugador gets as needed. If your pup seems restless or mischievous, spending more time playing or walking could help. You should also watch out for shortness of breath and other respiratory issues. Mixing a Pug with a Lab should reduce the severity of these symptoms, but Pugadors can still inherit breathing problems linked to their flat face. You should see less shedding compared to most Labs, thanks to the Pug genes. However, your Pugador might have slightly longer hair than most Pugs due to their Lab parent. You might need to comb or brush your Pugador two to three times a week to keep their coat clean and reduce shedding. Because of their unique face, Pugs require daily cleaning of their facial folds. These wrinkles can arbor bacteria and become smelly. In some cases, skin infections can even appear. If you have a Pug, you should clean these facial folds every day with some baby wipes or a soft cloth. You might also need to moisturize their nose and folds with some coconut oil to promote healthy skin. Pugadors also get these facial folds. Pugs and Labs are two great breeds for those looking for a family dog who gets along well with children. Pugadors will share characteristics from these two breeds and fit right in. They should also do well with other animals, provided that the breeder took the time to socialize them as puppies. Because Pugadors are larger than a purebred Pug, they might not be a good match for those who live in tiny homes or apartments. Remember that Labs belong to the sporting group and that Pugadors will need more exercise than most Pugs. Besides, your Pugador will probably inherit a drive to play outside and explore from her Labrador parent. Mixing a Pug with a Lab results in an adorable dog with a loyal and affectionate personality. My wife and I love playing with our active miniature Labradoodle Max. We want all Oodle puppies to be healthy and happy, have lots of fun and be part of the family. Load More. The American Kennel Club has registered them and they are ranked first for their amazing reputation. Labrador Retrievers began as pets for waterfowl hunters and fishers. The breed retained traits like a double water-resistant coat. It is close enough to the body to provide insulation against the frigid waters of northern lands. Labrador Retrievers are loveable animals. Why else would they have been the number one dog in America. They are patient and kind with a mellow, tolerant personality. Also, They are friendly to everyone and always eager to make new friends. They are not good guard dogs because of this trait, despite their many other talents. PUG Pugs are often described as having a lot of dogs in a small area. The American Kennel Club Toy group includes these sturdy, compact canines. They are also known as clowns in the dog world for their sense of humor. Between B. Evidence suggests that dogs like the Pug existed in ancient Tibet and Japan. Dutch traders introduced these dogs to Europe between the s and s. They were known as Mopshonds and became popular with royalty. Temperament A Labrador Pug mixture is not just unpredictable in terms of its looks. The temperament of a Labrador Pug mix can vary greatly. He is however sensitive to harsh criticisms from his parents. This is not surprising either, considering the close relationship that they have developed with humans over the years. The key to a strong relationship with your dog is positive reinforcement. You should also know a few other things about this hybrid. Size A Pug Lab mix is a mixed breed dog between these two famous breeds. It will look similar to a small Labrador, or a large Pug. These numbers can vary depending on the size of their parents. A Pugador that has a Lab parent could be a smaller dog. This hybrid dog can live between 14 and 17 year. Black Lab Pug mix puppies that is, from a black Lab parent! Some people may have the gene for a chest blaze or locket of white. Chocolate Lab and Pug mixes, and Pugador pups with a fawn Pug and yellow Lab parents will have a brown fur and a mask visible over their ears and muzzle. The base color of these dogs can range from pale gold to darker, more reddish hues. If you expect a Pug-Lab mix puppy to look the same as the full grown Pugador that you have admired, you may be disappointed. Pugadors do not require extensive grooming since they inherit the short, dense coat. Pugs shed less than Labs. Your designer dog may have longer hair due to the Lab parentage. Due to their unique facial features, Pugs need daily cleaning of the folds on their face. These wrinkles can harbor bacteria and smell. Skin infections may even occur in some cases. You should wipe these folds with a baby wipe or soft cloth every day if you own a Pug. Coconut oil can be used to moisturize the nose and folds of your Pug to promote healthy, glowing skin. Some individuals are hesitant to purchase a Pugador mix since crossbreeding is still a controversial procedure as it increases the danger of unpredictable behavior. While some view mixed breeds as a genetic anomaly, others perceive advantages in terms of appearance, health, and temperament. The combined DNA of crossbreed dogs decides the benefits and drawbacks of owning one. This is a great option for households with children and other pets. Sadly, this means that this breed is not a good guard dog because it prefers to play rather than protect. Intelligent dog: This mixed breed shows a lot of signs of dependability, especially when properly taught. Labradors who have been crossed with Pugs are intelligent dogs who can be trained to do practically anything. High work drive: Pugadors can be sporty, as they share qualities with active Labradors. This hybrid is ideal for active families who enjoy traveling on vacations and working out. The Labrador and Pug mix is great for active households because it may require frequent exercise. Here are some disadvantages of having a Labrador Pug mix: Unpredictability in size: Despite the fact that the Pug Lab mix is expected to grow to be between small and medium in size, the wide genetic size difference between the parent breeds makes it difficult for owners to forecast which gene the pup will inherit in terms of size. Unpredictable behavior: Hybrids, unlike purebreds, have temperaments that are often unpredictable. This is especially true for mixes at a young age. When not properly trained, they can exhibit aggressive and stubborn characteristics. Prone to several health issues: Labrador Pug mixes are susceptible to diseases that affect their parent breeds. Buying a Pug Lab mix puppy from a reputable breeder, going to the doctor on a regular basis, and sticking to a healthy daily routine can all help prevent health issues. It is critical to understand the benefits and drawbacks of owning a Pug Lab mix before purchasing one. This will help you determine if the dog is right for you and if you can care for it in the future. Lifespan Sociability The primary concerns are health-related with both parent breeds. We suggest caution when looking for a Pugador. At this point, the standards are a bit loose, at least until he gains recognition with the various organizations. We suggest researching the traits of both the Pug and Labrador before buying a puppy. The Pug brings a whole slate of issues with his flat face. We understand how people can fall in love with this pup. His antics and adorable head-tilting behavior win many fans of the breed. The Labrador is all-American, even if his origins stretch back to Newfoundland. The Pug cannot tolerate being alone. He loves people that much. He also has a high propensity for weight gain. The Lab has an oily coat that is waterproof that some people may find offensive because of its odor, especially when it gets wet. He is a barker with a stronger prey drive to chase than the Pug which may prompt him to chase the cat. The Labrador is more than a bird dog. Many people associate the Labrador Retriever as a gun dog accompanying waterfowl hunters. That may explain his current role, but he got his start with a different type of water animal, namely, fish. Cod anglers depended on this pup to help them with their job. The Pug started out living the good life. The Pug is the epitome of a companion animal. What else can you say about a pup that emperors pampered and warriors guarded? He continues this coveted standing, albeit with ordinary folks like us, instead of royalty. The Pug has fans in high places. Some may say that the Pug is a dog that only a mother could love. Just tell that to Hugh Laurie, Billy Joel, and James Taylor, who have all fallen under the spell of this adorable pooch. It brings together the comical nature of the Pug with the friendliness of the Lab. The intelligence of the Retriever is the star attraction when it comes to trainability. He is a smart dog that is eager to please. Both parent breeds are quite affectionate, even with strangers. Therefore, the Pugador is not the best choice for a watchdog. The Pugador is an agreeable dog on most fronts. However, he is sensitive to harsh reprimands, which he gets from both parent breeds. Positive reinforcement is the key to building a strong bond with your pup. There are also several other things you need to know about this hybrid. Are These Dogs Good for Families? He adores people and is kid-friendly, too. He also has the energy to keep up with them. We suggest supervising playtime with your pet if you have small children. The Retriever is a muscular dog that may not realize his strength around the little ones. We recommend early socialization to ensure a smooth transition into your home. Neither the Lab nor the Pug has an overly strong prey drive. Both parent breeds have their quirks and varying susceptibilities to chronic health conditions. Knowing upfront what you can expect will go a long way toward nipping any potential problems in the bud. Whether you feed your pup a diet for a medium or large dog will depend on the dominant parent breed. Puppy and adult foods differ in their energy and nutritional density. We emphasize this point because of the propensity for weight gain in the Pugador. You should be able to see a distinct waistline when looking down at your pup. Remember that the instructions on the dog food bag are only guidelines and not rules. We also suggest reserving treats as training aids to help keep his weight in check. You can feed your Pugador puppy three or four times a day. Once he reaches adulthood, cut it down to two meals, evenly spaced throughout the day. Doing so may help prevent him from gulping down his food too rapidly. The essential thing to remember is that both parent breeds are highly food-motivated. However, if he has the flat face of a Pug, we recommend limiting his time in the water because of possible respiratory issues. The same caution applies to working your Lab-dominant pup hard. Unfortunately, the Pug Lab Mix is susceptible to a condition called exercise-induced collapse if the play gets too intense. We suggest starting from day one. Offer him a toy when he starts to bite. The key to harnessing his eagerness to learn is with regular, consistent training. That means regular brushing to keep the hair under control. Bear in mind that the oil serves a vital purpose for this water dog. Their large size is also a factor. Pugs also bring a new host of challenges because of their flat faces. It often manifests itself in a variety of conditions, from heat stroke to respiratory disorders to eye problems. That makes preventive vet care imperative for the Pugador. Pre-breeding health screenings can only go so far, especially since the Lab brings other unexpected factors to the mix, such as exercise-induced collapse and obesity. The latter is also a risk for other health issues, such as diabetes. Minor Conditions. Origin of the Pug Lab Mix Designer dogs — dogs with mixed pedigree heritage — are nothing new. Formerly known as mutts, attitudes towards them changed completely when Labradoodles burst onto the scene in the s. Since then, Labs have been deliberately crossed with all kinds of different breeds, to create a plethora of first generation hybrids. They inherit both their physical and behavioral traits at random, so that when their parents are very different like a Lab and a Pug! Pug Lab Mix appearance Labradors and Pugs could hardly look more different. And one Pugador dog can look very different from the next, if they inherit more physical traits from one parent than the other. This is even true of siblings in the same litter! Pug Lab mix size Pugs are one of the best known toy dog breeds. They stand about a foot tall at the shoulder, and weigh 14 to 18 pounds. Labradors meanwhile are twice as tall as Pugs, and weigh 55 to 80 pounds. A Pug Lab mix full grown will usually reach somewhere between 35 and 65 pounds. But there are also outliers, who end up bigger or smaller than that. The size of their Labrador parent is a contributing factor. Pugadors from shorter, slimmer, working Labrador lines are likely to weigh less fully grown than Pugadors from heavyset show Labrador parents. Labs on the other hand are taller, more rectangular than square, and may have the quintessential Labrador otter tail. Pugadors can look a lot like a Pug, a lot like a Lab, or somewhere in between. Variation in appearance is a matter of more than just aesthetics as well. Coat Labradors are best known in black, chocolate and yellow coats. Pugs can be black, or fawn with a black mask. Black Lab Pug mix puppies that is, from a black Lab parent! Some individuals may carry the genes for a white locket or blaze on their chest. Chocolate Lab and Pug mix dogs, and Pugador puppies with a fawn Pug parent and a yellow Lab parent will have a brown coat and a visible mask over their muzzle and ears. Their base color can vary from pale gold through to deeper, redder hues. Finally, Labrador Retriever Pug coat length and texture can vary too. Their temperament can also vary a lot too. Pug personality Pugs are the consummate lapdog. They were bred over thousands of generations to provide their wealthy owners with company. As a result they are very affectionate, and will seek out the attention of their owner a lot of the time. They can also struggle with separation anxiety, if their owner has to leave the house to work for long periods every day. Which means they are moderately trainable, but not impressively so. Labradors on the other hand are among the best known working dogs there are. Not only are they quick learners, they have a powerful work ethic. This makes them quicker and easier to train than Pugs, but also means they need a lot more mental stimulation before they are ready to chill out for the remainder of the day. A Pugador may be unsuitable for an owner who is unable or disinterested in spending lots of time on structured training games. One thing a Labrador Pug mix is sure to love is the company of people and meeting new friends. Training and exercising your Pug Lab Mix To bring out the best in their personality, Lab Pug mix puppies should be carefully socialized to lots of different experiences from a young age. This home test gives accurate results giving fur parents like you to learn in advance the symptoms to look for as well as prepare for the possible medical expenses. So, here are some of the 8 health problems that your Pug Lab Mix may inherit: 1. Hip Dysplasia Big dogs like Labrador Retriever are more susceptible to hip dysplasia , an orthopedic and congenital disease. Puppies with the condition will suffer from mobility issues as they grow older because of the uneven growth of the ball and the socket in their hip joints. Respiratory Problems The Pug parent is prone to suffer from breathing disorders as a result of its short nostrils. The signs you need to look for are excessive panting and drooling and if not addressed, it could lead to collapse due to low oxygen levels. Epilepsy It is the Labrador Retriever gene that can pass on this neurological problem. A dog afflicted with this disease will appear normal and then suddenly will exhibit seizures or uncontrollable shaking that normally lasts for about 1 to 2 minutes. Wobbler Disease Often seen among large dogs, this is a disease in the cervical spine. This is a painful condition and the common signs are difficulty getting up from bed and weakness. Over Heating If the Pug Lab mix dog inherited the flat face of its parents, chances are, he will also be prone to overheating and dehydration due to heat and physical exertion. Legg-Calve Perthe Disease This is a developmental disease brought about by the degeneration of the femoral head of the leg bone. The warning signs are trouble getting up and walking. The Labrador Retriever is one of the breeds commonly diagnosed with this benign or non-cancerous growth. These tumors may grow large which could affect mobility and in some cases, cause pain. Plus, you are not guaranteed that puppies produced in puppy mills are well-socialized or not. However, if you are willing to pay just a little bit more getting your Lab Pug puppy from an ethical breeder means that you will be provided with a health guarantee for the puppy of your choice. Not only that but puppies from responsible breeders of Pug Lab have received their initial vaccination shots and have been dewormed. Not to mention that most responsible breeders also bring up the puppies in a loving family environment, so this means that your puppy is already socialized and can adapt well to a new environment. The answer is no because most Pugador puppies are lactose-intolerant. By the time Pug and Lab Mix puppies are released to their new owners, they are already eating solid food. To keep them safe without fur parents having to guard them all the time, one of the things that you can do is install an invisible and electronic dog fence around your home perimeter as we discussed above. Aside from the cost of getting a puppy, other recurring expenses go with raising a Pugador puppy. Types of Expenses. There were dogs that Chinese nobles used to have as pets. They are popular because they are friendly, energetic, and good-natured. Pugs have always been versatile pets that are great for families. They have been popular with European nobility for a long time and they still are today. These dogs were often depicted as palace pets, or lapdogs belonging to the nobility. Chinese folklore has it that the pug was a highly favored type of dog in ancient times and that it would bring its owners happiness and good fortune. Many people seem to really like pugs. This might be because they have a certain charm or appeal that makes them likable. Origin of Labrador Retriever Labrador Retriever is a popular dog breed today. More Labrador Retrievers are in the United States than any other dog breed. There is no single place where Labradors originated. They were developed over hundreds of years in areas around the Atlantic Ocean and in Newfoundland, Canada. The northern tip of Maine was also an area where they were developed. But people began developing this type of working dogs they called Labrador first on various islands near the Labrador Sea. It was used at that time for hunting game birds and high games. At the same time, it was used as a gundog on small games such as rabbits and fur-bearing animals like otter and mink. People crossed different dogs to make new ones. They wanted to make a dog that could run faster to go over rough dirt and a dog that could run faster for hunting ducks and deer. Pug Lab Mix Appearance The appearance of a Pug Lab Mix may vary depending on which parent breed is more dominant whether it is labrador parent or the pug parent. Lab pug mixes who are from shorter and slimmer lines weigh less than those with a heavier show strain background. This is because they need more energy to maintain their body temperature. A lab pug mix can weigh between 25 and 50 lbs. After the first year, they will typically grow at a rate of about lbs per month. Most people want their first dog to be affectionate and snuggly. Well, this breed is exactly that! This breed loves his human pallets and absolutely adores snuggling up with them. Lab pug mix puppies are very active and playful, too. Pugadors are great family dogs and they get along well with children and other pets. Pug and Labrador mix is an adorable kind, merry active, and cheerful small animal that likes to play a lot. It can take part in various activities that family members do each day. It is a good pet because it is nice and also does what other family members want. As such, the dogs can have health problems similar to those of both Pugs and Labrador Retrievers. Both are popular breeds that are often crossed with each other in Pug Lab Mix litters. Many purebred dogs come with genetic health concerns, even if the dog is bred carefully. Hip and Elbow Dysplasia Hip Dysplasia and elbow dysplasia are two common health issues that plague many dog breeds, including the Lab pug mix. Pugs are prone to hip dysplasia. The same goes for elbow dysplasia. Pug labs are also susceptible to hip dysplasia and can develop elbow or shoulder problems. Elbow dysplasia occurs due to the deterioration of the elbow joint. Hip dysplasia is common in small dogs while other dogs, including Labradors, are subject to elbow dysplasia. Obesity Obesity in Pug lab mixed breed is when your dog has a higher body condition score. Some think that this is because they are overfed and not exercising enough. Obesity can predispose your dog to diabetes, arthritis and may shorten their life. Dogs who are overweight may have joint problems and breathing issues. Obesity in lab pug mix puppies can begin as early as 4 months old. Most dogs gain weight as they mature. The Pug is no exception. This breed typically grows a long coat that needs daily grooming. This attention contributes to the overall weight gain of the breed. A healthy Pug will have a lean body type. Like most dogs, Pug Lab Mixes that are too thin have health problems related to low body fat. They might have problems with their hips, or it will be harder for them to breathe. Owners can accomplish this by correct feeding, along with regular exercise to burn off excess energy. If you have the patience and financial security, these mixed-breed dogs can make for a loving family companion. The best way to approach this problem is to keep your Lab pug mixed breed active and engaged. Cataracts Cataracts are one of the most commonly seen eye diseases in dogs and are usually the result of old age. They are considered to be hereditary but can also be caused by illness, injury, or trauma to the eye. Cataracts cause blindness if left untreated and can be deadly. If you own a lab pug, it is important for you to know what may cause a false positive test and the symptoms and complications of this condition. This will help you get your puppy to the veterinarian as soon as possible. Epilepsy Many dogs are very prone to epilepsy, especially pug lab mix dogs. Epilepsy is an abnormal electrical activity in the brain that causes seizures. Anywhere from three percent to five percent of dogs suffer from epilepsy. If you own a dog with epilepsy you know how frightening it can be. Seizures can be quite frightening for dog owners, but rest assured they are not necessarily harmful to your pet. How to Crossbreed Pug and a Labrador There is a high chance of artificial insemination being required in order to mate a pug with a lab. This is often done when there is difficulty in achieving conception through natural breeding. The process that occurs between a male pug and female lab can be used when the breeders want to avoid any diseases being passed on by the two dogs breeding. It is also used when there are behavioral problems such as aggression or sexual disinterest. This procedure will prevent these issues from occurring during the mating process. This procedure will also be used when breeding a male pug with a female lab if the male is not fertile. Artificial insemination is a way to put sperm into a female dog so that she can have puppies. In fact, it would be an understatement to say this mixed breed needs careful dieting. Since the Labrador breed is known to have a hearty appetite, making them prone to excess weight, and the Pug is not known for being an easy-going dog. You should learn how much food your Pug Labrador Mix will need, as well as other important information that will keep your dog healthy and happy. Pug Lab Mix Exercise Requirements Pugs are a wonderful dog breed, but they do require proper exercise and attention. This puppy is really smart but sometimes a bit stubborn and hard-headed. Lab Pug Mix dogs need attention and should not be left alone for hours on end. They will get lonely and start to bark or do destructive things. Lab Pug Mix dogs also have problems with separation anxiety. They will require a lot of exercise and attention since they are prone to obesity due to the fact that they are often considered lapdogs. A short walk every day is often not enough exercise for dogs in light of their growing energy. One of the reasons these dogs can weigh up to pounds is because they were originally bred to be retrievers, so they do have a lot of energy! The best way to keep them happy while also keeping them healthy is to make sure they receive the proper amount of daily exercise. Pug Lab Mix Grooming Lab Pug mixes are a fairly intelligent and easy-going breed but do require some grooming. The Lab Pug Mix needs to be brushed regularly with a firm bristle brush to rid the thivcoat of dead hair and loose fur. The Lab Pug Mix is a hybrid dog that is generally easy to groom. Its short, smooth coat should be brushed weekly to remove dead hair and prevent mats from forming. Brushing will also help distribute the natural oils evenly, which will keep the coat healthy and shiny. In between brushing all, a quick wipe-down with a damp cloth should be that is needed. Their eyes, ears, and teeth need to be checked daily for any signs of infection. Nails should be trimmed regularly with dog nail clippers every few weeks, and its teeth brushed at least once a week. Bathing a lab pug mix can be a fun and rewarding experience. Make sure to use a shampoo that is made for dogs and is pH balanced for their skin. Rinse thoroughly and towel dry. You can also use a hairdryer on low settings if you need to hurry the process along. The lab pug mix dog is expected to live a very long life. Between 14 and 17 years is the lifespan of this hybrid dog, which falls in between many other hybrids with regard to longevity. Pugs are a type of dog that is small and has a friendly disposition. They tend to live longer than other dog breeds that have been around for a long time. Conclusion Pug Lab mix tends to be quite active and playful. They love the company of their owners and will follow them around the house or yard whenever they are allowed. Because Pug Lab mixes are so friendly with everyone in their household, they do best when well socialized. They enjoy spending time outside in the yard and playing with other pets, so keeping them confined inside for long periods of time may not be ideal. Pug Lab mix is a wonderful family pet, that will give you many years of devoted service. While they are usually very friendly and adore children, they can occasionally be stubborn. But this breed tends to learn fast and loves attention and companionship. You and your dog should enjoy a long relationship because they mature slowly and live approximately years. It seems like every time you turn around, there's another shot your pup needs. And keeping track of all the different types of vaccinations can be a real challenge. But don't worry, we're here to help. In this article, we provide a comprehensive A-to-Z guide for dog vaccination in India - covering everything you need to know about what shots are available, when they should be administered, and more! Why vaccinate your dog? There are a number of important reasons to vaccinate your dog. Vaccinations help protect your dog from a variety of serious and potentially deadly diseases. They also help reduce the spread of disease among dogs and from dogs to humans. Vaccinating your dog is one of the best things you can do to keep them healthy and happy and is an important part of responsible pet parenting. So here's a quick rundown of the most common vaccinations dogs need. All dogs should be vaccinated against rabies, and booster shots should be given every one to three years depending on state law. Parvovirus: Parvovirus is a deadly disease that can affect dogs of all ages, but puppies are especially vulnerable. The virus attacks the gastrointestinal system, causing severe vomiting and diarrhoea. Parvovirus can also cause heart problems and death. All dogs should be vaccinated against parvovirus, with booster shots given every one to two years. Distemper: Distemper is a highly contagious disease that affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems of dogs. It can cause severe coughing, vomiting, diarrhoea, seizures, and death. Puppies are especially vulnerable to the disease. All dogs should be vaccinated against distemper, with booster shots given every one to two years. Leptospirosis: Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that affects the kidneys and liver of dogs. It can be transmitted through contact with contaminated water or soil. The disease can cause severe kidney damage and death. All dogs should be vaccinated against leptospirosis, with booster shots given every one to two years. Infectious Canine Hepatitis: Hepatitis is a viral disease that affects the liver of dogs. The symptoms can range from loss of appetite and thirst, fever and bleeding. It is usually spread through contact with contaminated or infected urine, saliva or faeces. Non-core Vaccines for Dogs: There are a few vaccines that are considered "non-core" for dogs, which means that they are not necessarily required for all dogs. However, your veterinarian may recommend them based on your dog's lifestyle and risk factors. Bordetella kennel cough is a bacteria that can cause respiratory infections in dogs. It is often spread through close contact with other dogs, so if your dog socialises with other dogs regularly, your veterinarian may recommend this vaccine. Canine ParaInfluenza is a virus that can cause respiratory illness in dogs. It is most commonly spread through close contact with other infected dogs. You might want to get this vaccine once you discuss it with your veterinarian. Lyme Vaccine is used to help prevent Lyme Disease, which is caused by a bacteria transmitted by ticks. If your dog spends time in areas where ticks are common such as woods or tall grass , your veterinarian may recommend this vaccine. Coronavirus: The canine coronavirus CCoV is a virus that can cause intestinal infections and abdominal discomfort in dogs. It is most commonly spread through close contact with other infected dogs, therefore, if your dog socialises with other dogs regularly, you can consider administering this vaccine once you discuss it with your veterinarian. They will need a booster shot every weeks of core vaccines until they are 16 weeks old. After that, they will need an annual booster shot. Our pets have increased risk of diseases as they are susceptible to various organisms in the environment directly or indirectly. Vaccinating your pet is much economical than treatment against diseases. The common diseases against which the pets can be vaccinated include — Rabies, Infectious Canine Hepatitis, Canine Distemper, parvovirus, leptospirosis and kennel cough. However, this temporary maternal protection wanes by the age of 6—9 weeks. To continue and enhance this protection, vaccinations are available to protect the animal from contracting various highly contagious diseases. There is a large anti-vaccination theory that floats around human and animal vaccination protocols. However, keeping in mind the kind of diseases that are endemic to India or are largely prevalent, we need to compulsorily ensure that we do not just vaccinate our little pets on time but also remember to give their boosters on time. An important thing to remember is that different veterinary doctors can have different vaccination protocols. This protects the puppy from deadly life-threatening airborne viruses such as Parvo and Distemper. Around 8 weeks of age, a combined cluster of vaccines commonly known as 5-in-1, 7-in-1, 9-in-1 or in-1 is given with a Booster Shot after 21 days again. These protect your puppy from viruses such as Adenovirus, Parvovirus, Distemper, Leptospira, and some other deadly diseases, which can be fatal for your puppy. There is a base level protection against five diseases and in the rest of the vaccines, there is increased protection against more strains of Leptospira. This vaccine is a once in a lifetime vaccine that protects your pet sufficiently from Kennel Cough. Animals are often susceptible to the infection when their immunity is compromised due to some other reason. The kennel cough vaccine is often recommended before you can board your dog at a hostel or foster. For Pet Cats, there are 3 core vaccinations that are vaccinated together in one injection commonly known as Feligen or Tricat in India. This can be given to a kitten between 6 to 8 weeks of age followed by a booster at 16 weeks of age. Anti-Rabies Vaccination is also given to cats, following exactly the same protocol as dogs i. Now you know all the important Vaccinations your pet dog or cat should receive in the first year. So, what are the other important things to remember about Pet Vaccinations? Some vaccinations are required to be given boosters annually, and some are required once in three years. Be sure to ask your vet about when vaccine boosters are required and post reminders for yourself. I would recommend setting a reminder or an alarm on your phone since so many apps are equipped for this purpose. Insist that your Vet gives your pet a complete once over before administering any vaccination. Vaccines should not be administered if your pet is running a fever or in any poor health condition. Vaccines must be given to healthy animals only. Some pets do not mind injections and do not even realise they are being given a shot! However, some pets are sensitive and will yowl incessantly at the prick. If this happened the first time around, the next time, you can request your vet to use a thinner gauge needle or an insulin syringe needle. Distract your pet while he or she is getting a vaccine. Holding them firmly while being injected is extremely important. You can also speak to them, lift their front legs or tap them on the nose to distract them. You may observe that your pet is slightly dull the day after vaccination or is not eating well. If this persists for more than 24 hours, please visit your vet. If you feel a lump at the point of the injection, which is increasing over a month or larger than 2 cm or is simply present for more than 3 months, please make sure that your Vet is aware of this. Also, remember, that if you ever need to travel abroad with your Pet, timely vaccination along with their records is absolutely critical, so be meticulous about storing your Vaccination Certificates and records. When these pests are allowed to grow, there will be a host of health complications. The following is a suggested schedule for eradicating worms check with your veterniarian for clarifications and ways to identify a worm infestation - every fortnight for pups aged three months or younger, once a month for those between three and six months of age, once in two months for puppies between six and twelve months of age and after that point, every three months. Otherwise, vaccination has to be given as early as possible. The booster dose is given 3 weeks after the first dose after which it must be given annually. The first anti-rabies vaccination is given when the puppy is three months old and the booster dose must be given annually. Both de-worming and vaccination on a regular basis are essential to avoid serious health problems for your pet. Your veterinarian will give you a vaccination card that will contain dates and names of vaccines given.

puppy french bulldog barking - During this stage a pug puppy is experiencing everything for the first time. He's also learning what it means to be a dog -- lessons that will stick with him for the rest of his life. The First Two Weeks During the first two weeks of your pug puppy's life, he'll be pretty focused on doing two things: eating and sleeping. Newborn pups spend the day nestled with their mother and siblings, suckling and napping and occasionally readjusting to get comfortable. Their eyes are still closed, and they can't see or hear, but they can feel the warmth of their mother and litter mates around them. Keep in mind that it's normal for pug puppies to breathe rapidly when they're sleeping because of their snubbed noses. But, if a puppy is wheezing, you should contact your vet right away. Age Two to Three Weeks In the two to three week stage, your pug puppy will begin to emerge from his constant slumber. Once his eyes are open, he'll build his ability to respond to light, movement and sound. He may try to crawl around his whelping box, until he wears himself out and needs another nap. Since he's more aware of his surroundings, he'll begin to recognize his mom, brothers, sisters and you. Now that your baby pug has all his senses, you can begin handling him gently for short periods of time. Always respect the pup's mother when handling her babies -- if she seems uncomfortable, return the puppy to the nest. Age Three to Four Weeks Your little pug will really perk up when he hits three to four weeks old. By now his eyes, ears, and nose are fully functioning. He'll see you coming and know that good things are headed his way. At this point your puppy is an adorable little sponge, constantly absorbing information about his surroundings. Because pug pups are so susceptible at this stage, it's important to keep their experiences positive. This is also the time when he starts to learn what typical pug behavior is really all about. Now that your pug pup's eyes are fully functional, check them for any sign of disease. Many eye diseases afflict pugs in particular because their eyes are so prominent. Check your pups for common pug eye diseases like Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca chronic dry eye and Pigmentary Karatitus spots on the cornea. If you suspect that any of the pups have an eye disease you should talk to your vet immediately. Age Four to Six Weeks And so the training begins. At four weeks old, your little pug is playing with his litter mates, who are all learning what to do and not to do as far as proper pup interaction goes. This is also a critical time in your puppy's life because it's when his mother begins to wean him. Pug puppies can start eating regular dog food at four weeks old, in combination with mother's milk, until they're fully weaned. Even though he's learning to make it on his own, it's still crucial for your baby pug to stay with his family. Experts consider weeks three to sixteen to be the most important time for learning appropriate dog behavior. During this window your pup will learn how to play with other dogs appropriately, how to respect their pack leader their mom , and where it is and is not OK to go potty. At six weeks old, your baby pug isn't ready to leave his mama's side, but soon he will be. When he reaches seven to eight weeks of age, as long as he's well-adjusted and happy, he should be ready to leave the nest and begin his life with his forever family. More Articles. Overview When you have a dog from the age of a young pup, this gives you a wonderful opportunity. It offers you a chance to bond with your dog from the very beginning. This also gives you an advantage because you will be able to train and teach your pup what they need to know before they learn any bad behavior from elsewhere. This section will discuss how to care for a Pug puppy, starting at 8 weeks old and up until he or she is an adult, at the age of 1 year. Transition to a New Home Things will run much smoother if you plan ahead and have most, if not all, of your puppy care items already in your home. Here are the most important items to have: A crate — One with an adjustable size is best to fit the needs of a growing Pug puppy. Crating is a good night time method to use until a pup is housebroken. Gates or a playpen — Choosing an area to gate off or using a canine playpen are good options for when you must leave your Pug puppy home alone or for when you cannot be right at his side. This keeps the pup in a controlled space which helps in regard to bathroom needs and keeping a puppy in one area when he or she has strong chewing urges. Puppy food — This should be obtained before the puppy is brought home. Owners will not always agree with the food that a puppy has been being fed, however any change should be done gradually. Have the food that the Pug has been used to eating on hand, as well as your new choice. Details regarding making this change can be found here: Feeding a Pug. You'll also want them to be sized appropriately and at floor level. Honey — Puppies are prone to the condition of hypoglycemia, which is a rapid and dangerous drop in blood sugar levels. Stress, among other things, can bring this on and while going to a new home is a happy event, it can also be stressful for a little pup that is leaving all that he knew and no longer has the companionship and friendship of his litter-mates. Treatment can be provided at home as plans are being made to bring the puppy to the closest animal hospital or veterinarian. A small dab of honey is rubbed onto the gums and then the puppy should receive professional treatment, sometimes an IV to restore sugar levels back to normal. Leash, collar and harness — Pugs are prone to conditions that involve breathing problems. The body structure of this breed confines breathing passages into a small space and Pugs can have smaller than normal nasal passages and openings stenotic nares. For this reason, using a harness can help a Pug breathe easier when on leash. A short 6 foot leash works best for both potty training and heeling. Starting dental care at a young age can help a puppy become used to this grooming element and set up a foundation for a life time of good dental hygiene practices. Keeping the wrinkles, eyes and ears clean are important part of caring for a Pug puppy. Read more: Shedding - Expect your Pug to shed a lot and be prepared by having the right tools. Dental care - Taking care of your Pug's teeth should be high on your priority list. Ears - Expected shapes and proper care. Wrinkles - Keeping the wrinkles dry and clean. Sleeping supplies - Some owners prefer to have their puppy sleep in the bed with them and while this is not always a bad thing, an owner should think about how that will play out as the pup matures into a much larger adult dog. Having a pup get used to his own canine bed from the beginning, set up in a quiet corner of a room, may work out best. Do keep in mind that Pugs crave human companionship and do not like to feel isolated. Setting up the bed in a quiet corner of a well-used room allows a Pug to have a nice area to retreat to for rest and sleep while allowing him to be close to his human family. It will be normal for a little one to sleep anywhere from 16 to 18 hours a day. This included both night time sleep and naps that will be taken throughout the day. Chew Toys — Teething will begin around the age of 3 or 4 months old and can last up until a Pug puppy is 8 months old. Having a good supply of toys on hand for a puppy to chew on is important. Puppy Proofing Before bringing a puppy home and on a regular basis at least weekly owners are encouraged to go over all floors to remove any small objects that could be accidentally swallowed. All items that could be chewed on such as pocket books and shoes should be placed up high until the Pug has matured. Whining It is normal for very young puppies to cry when first brought to a new home, this usually only lasts for a week or so as the pup becomes used to his new family and environment. This can also be a sign of needing to go to the bathroom, so following house training guidelines, be sure to take your Pug puppy outside on a regular basis. Vaccinations for the Pug Puppy An important part of caring for your puppy will be to make sure he or she is up-to-date for all needed vaccinations. An 8-week-old should already have received his shots, as well as a de-worming. Veterinarians will have varying schedules, however this is a general guideline: 5 weeks Parvovirus: For puppies at high risk of exposure to parvo, some veterinarians recommend vaccinating at 5 weeks. Dogs at high risk are those that live in areas where wild life raccoon, skunk, deer, etc. The inclusion of either canine adenovirus-1 or adenovirus-2 in a vaccine will protect against both adenovirus cough and hepatitis; adenovirus-2 is highly preferred. You will want to talk to your veterinarian about this. Reactions to Vaccines Immunizations are intended to stimulate the immune system to then protect a dog against a specific infectious disease. It is very important to have your Pug receive all needed vaccinations. Your Pug may react to immunizations in ways that range from soreness at the site of injection to mild fever to allergic reactions. The allergic reactions can range from mild to severe. Mild- Mild reactions include fever, sluggishness, and loss of appetite. Mild reactions usually resolve without any treatment needed. This is called Urticaria. This happens when there is a reaction of the skin and shows as hives or bumps. It is usually extremely itchy. Urticaria may progress to anaphylaxis, which is considered life-threatening. However, Urticaria is the most common reaction in dogs if a reaction is to happen. Severe - The most severe reaction is anaphylaxis. This is a very fast, sudden, severe allergic response that causes breathing difficulties, collapse and possible death. This is very rare. Urticaria the moderate and most common reaction, if one is to occur happens soon after vaccination, often even before the puppy is brought home. It can happen in the car while you are driving back to your house. Your veterinarian will recommend immediate return to the hospital for treatment. Urticaria is usually treated successfully with injectable corticosteroids like dexamethasone or prednisone. Antihistamines do little to help with acute allergic reactions but may be given by injection to help prevent recurrence of symptoms after steroids wear off. Mild vaccination reactions usually require no treatment. However, if the symptoms persist for more than 24 hours, call your veterinarian. Growth Rate A Pug puppy grows quickly and this can happen gradually or with spurts and stops. Many Pug puppies have a growth spurt near the 3 to 5 month mark. As the pup nears the 1 year mark, growth will slow down. Once a Pug reaches his or her full height, there may still be some growth in the width of the Pug, as the chest widens and fills out. How a Pug ages and his growth is rapid, yet can be staggered during the first year. Getting Your Puppy Comfortable One of the most important parts of bringing a puppy home is allowing him or her to become used to their new surroundings. Allow your pup to roam around and check out his new environment. Be sure to keep a puppy's water in one designed spot so that the pup can know that it can always be found. The drinking and feeding area should be in a quite corner of a room, without much foot traffic or noise, since small puppies can feel vulnerable while eating. The absolute longest that a 2 month old pup can hold their needs is 2 hours. The bladder and bowel muscles are not yet fully developed. As they grow older, this time will increase as they have more control over their body. Usually it will increase by 1 hour for each month that goes by. Therefore, a 3 month old can hold on for about 3 hours, a 4 month old for about 4 hours and so on.With 8 hours being the maximum time for any age. Informational Note: When your 2 month old needs to go outside at least every 2 hours, be sure to not get stuck into that habit. It is important to slowly increase the time intervals. Your 3 month old can wait about 3 hours, but only if you allow the pup to use his bowel and bladder muscles to work and grow stronger. If an owner always brought their Pug outside every 2 hours, the dog would never learn to hold their needs for a longer period of time. Keep reading about the best way to house train a Pug puppy. All puppy vaccinations should be given before you take him or her out to the park, to pet supply stores or any other area in which there may have been or could be other animals. Many new owners already have another dog in the household. As your puppy grows older and is receiving the needed vaccinations, you can slowly begin introducing your new puppy to other dogs and allow normal socialization to begin. The Necessities of Care To have a healthy and happy puppy that will grow into a happy and healthy adult dog, make sure to always provide the essentials: A proper diet. You will need to decide if you want to offer manufacture food, home cooked food or a combination of both. Pugs are very sensitive to their human's emotions. A hug goes a long way! As newborns they are deaf, bind, and largely immobile. They rely on their mom, or their breeder for food, warmth, and care. A Pug is Born! Unfortunately, the birthing process of Pugs is a difficult one. Flat-faced breeds, such as the Pug, are more likely to experience complications when giving birth. The Pug is also more likely to experience Dystocia, which is simply a term that means difficult or abnormal birth. Such situations put both the mother and her pups at risk. More often than not, the mother will require her pups to be delivered by a C-section. This is due to the fact that unborn Pugs have large and broad heads, whilst their mom has a very narrow pelvis. This awkward combination makes natural birth difficult. If the birth is successful, Pugs commonly have litters containing puppies, with 4 pups being the average. If your baby Pug is born naturally, their mother will next turn to chewing off the umbilical cord and cleaning them up. This is an important part of the bonding experience for mother dogs. The newborn Pugs will often nurse from their mother. When they are not nursing, they will spend the majority of their time sleeping. Newborn Pugs Pug pups begin their life fully reliant on their mother. They are born blind, deaf, and without teeth. A coat should be present, with the color being commonly either fawn or black. Fawn pups may experience their coat color lightening or darkening in shade as they mature. Their eyes and ears will be closed at birth and will remain this way for a while yet. Unable to support their own body weight, they will crawl on their stomach to get around. Baby Pugs are also not able to regulate their temperature, meaning that it is very important to stay warm. They will commonly clump together in piles, sharing body heat. Finally, the mother will also have to help her pups urinate and defecate as they are unable to do so by themselves. She does this by licking the anal and genital areas. One Week Old Baby Pug During the first week of life, baby Pug pups will either be nursing off their mother or sleeping. As they are still blind and deaf at this stage, they will not bother exploring or moving around more than necessary, spending most of their time lying close to their littermates and mother. Their weight should steadily increase every day. At the end of their first week of life, they should have doubled their birth weight, or at least come close. The owners of the pups will need to keep an eye on their breathing as brachycephalic breeds, such as the Pug, commonly have breathing issues. Two Week Old Baby Pug As we hit two weeks of age, we see a key development in the puppies growth; their eyes will open for the very first time! To begin with, their eye color will be blue, but will likely transition into a dark brown as they mature. Owners need to check over their eyes to ensure there are no issues, as this breed can be susceptible to ocular problems. At this stage, they may be a little more curious about their surroundings due to their newfound eyesight. However, they will still primarily be focused on sleeping and nursing. Their weight should continue to rise steadily over the coming weeks. By this time, the ears of the baby Pug pups will have opened. They will be able to hear for the first time and will begin reacting to more sounds. Their eyesight will also have developed significantly, with them being able to recognize their mother, littermates, and objects placed in their den. Along with their newfound perception of the world, they should now be able to support their own body weight and stand up. They may be able to walk, albeit with an unsteady gait. With all the interesting sights and sounds around them, they will likely be a lot more inquisitive of their surroundings. They may explore the den as much as their wobbly legs will carry them. The Pug puppies will also start teething, with their baby teeth coming through for the first time. This may start a passing interest in solid food. Gaining Independence On top of all this, they should now be able to urinate and defecate on their own, without any stimulation from their mother. We can also expect to see the start of the early socialization period. The puppies will begin developing behaviors and social skills for the first time, taking part in play with their littermates. Owners of the puppies should take advantage of this period to help them get used to human touch and presence. They will be establishing relationships with their mother, den mates, and people. Training can begin at this early stage. Despite the fact that their brains still have a lot of developing to do, a start can still be made on teaching them basic crate and potty training. They will also likely be much more mobile on their feet. Little adventures will be common and the puppies will play together often. Soft, easy to eat puppy food can be given. They will continue to rise in weight and keep learning social skills, with more complex behaviors being shown. While they seem a lot more independent at this stage, they will still require plenty of time with their mother and den mates before they are ready to be moved to a new home. Six Week Old Baby Pug At six weeks old, the Pug puppies are fast approaching the age where they reach full independence. By now, they should be fully weaned off their mother and placed onto solid food only. This is a big step. There is still much to learn. Up until now, the Pug puppies have been very curious and interested in completely new things. But they have always been safe under the watchful eye of their mom, too. Now, as they finally gain independence, the puppies learn to be cautious and careful; traits that keep them alive in the wild. Eight Week Old Baby Pug At eight weeks old, the Pug pups are developed enough to be able to leave their mother and littermates behind. They can be sold and moved into a new loving home. They should weigh around pounds. Training and Raising a Pug Resources Keep in mind that they still have a lot of developing to do; both physically and mentally! Remember, they are still within their fear period! Things learned here will make a big impact. Still, Thinking of Buying a Pug? The birthing process Sadly, baby pug births are renowned for their complications. Like many other brachycephalic dogs, pugs are prone to difficult births. This is often referred to as Dystocia. Natural birth is difficult. For this reason, the number of newborn baby pugs born by cesarean section is greater than average. Make sure mum is eating a healthy diet and getting plenty of exercises Visit your veterinarian for a six-week ultrasound, pelvic exam, and blood sugar testing Put together a cosey whelping box in a quiet and comfortable location. A cardboard box with a thick layer of newspaper will suffice Be ready with everything you need for the birth- clean towels, scissors, rubbing alcohol, and heating pads are a great start As the birth approaches, mamma pug will start acting a bit differently. Look out for nesting behaviors and change in appetite. Heavy panting, straining, and whimpering are signs that birth is imminent. If your dog shows any of these signs you will require professional assistance and must call your vet immediately. Most litters consist of between one and eight puppies in total. Puppies come out head-first in the amniotic sac. This is a natural and healthy behavior. You can cut the cord with a sterilized thread or apply some rubbing alcohol to a pair of scissors. When the puppies start to cry this is a great sign. Clean them off gently with a soft towel and encourage them to start nursing from their mamma. Newborn pups will need a lot of sleep. So be patient. Newborn Pugs: The Early Days Image source: Pinterest Remember that newborn baby pugs are born deaf, blind, toothless, and relatively immobile. These tiny creatures are entirely dependent on others during their early life. Mum will help them go to the bathroom and they will need help staying warm and well-nourished. This will take some time. Your puppies will crawl at first. This is completely normal. Newborn pugs cannot support their body weight yet. With time their mobility will improve. Something to consider- pugs are prone to respiratory difficulties, so look out for breathing problems early on. Even after a week, newborn pug puppies are blind and deaf. With their limited mobility, they are most likely to stay close to the litter. Things to monitor include weight and breathing. You should expect to notice a gradual increase in weight. Most baby pug puppies will double their birth weight after one week. Remember to keep checking their breathing, even as they start to mature. This is always a special moment. Step by step, your pups will gradually start exploring. There will still be a lot of sleeping involved. This is normal. Pug puppies start their lives with blue eyes but as they get older their eye coloration changes. Once maturity is reached, most pups will have dark brown eyes. They can now support their weight and move around. This means your bundles of joy will start to come into their own. Your puppies can now hear, urinate, and defecate independently. As they grow in confidence, they will become fascinated by their new senses and surroundings. Look out for their reactions as they discover the world for the first time. At three weeks, eyesight is developing quickly. Three-week-old baby pug puppies can recognize their mother, siblings, and immediate surroundings. This is a social time and the perfect opportunity to get your pups used to human touch. But always be gentle and go slowly. Your pups will start to develop social skills and become more playful. Enjoy watching them interact with their littermates and get up to lots of mischiefs. The three-week mark is also teething time. This is when your puppies will be learning about their world. Enjoy watching your litter play and tumble. Prioritize socializing at this time and begin some basic training exercises. Glorious Food. Expect Hungry Pups by Week 5 Week five is for progress. Weaning is a slow and steady process. Let your pup experiment with solid foods and gradually reduce their milk consumption. This is a delicate developmental milestone for young dogs. They will need to stay with their litter a while longer before looking for a forever home. Nearly There. Pug Pups at 6 Weeks By 6 weeks, it can seem that your pups are seasoned professionals at, well, being a dog. Give them time to find their feet. Baby Pugs: Expect a Confidence Wobble in Week 7 After seven weeks, your pups will have gotten used to being more independent. At this stage, you must be cautious with even the most confident of puppies. Pushing a young pup too far, too soon is a recipe for disaster. If your pup seems to have lost some confidence, try using counter-conditioning to get them back on track. Here are my 5 top tips for healthy, happy pups: 1. puppy french bulldog barking - The study indicates the health of these dogs has strayed substantially from non-French Bulldogs in the UK and is now largely much poorer. Urgent intervention is now required to reduce the high rate of health issues currently seen in the breed. Compiling a list of the 43 most common disorders across both groups of dogs, the findings revealed many of the differences in health between the two groups were closely associated with the extreme body shape that defines French Bulldogs. However, this demand has resulted in huge welfare issues, particularly with reference to breathing problems and sore eyes that are common in the breed. However, despite wide acceptance of the health issues in the breed, there has been limited reliable evidence, until now, on just how poor the general health of French Bulldogs really is. The findings of the new study revealed that French Bulldogs had a higher risk of 20 out of the 43 .Narrowed nostrils stenotic nares was the disorder with highest risk in French Bulldogs, with the breed more than 42 times more likely to have the condition, helping explain the high frequency of breathing problems they experience. These results support general agreement by leading academics, kennel clubs, veterinary organisations and welfare bodies that the typical body shape of French Bulldogs must be shifted towards a more moderate, and less extreme, make-up, in order to reduce these health issues. Humans need to accept that the needs of dogs for good health, welfare and temperament overrides any humans wishes for cute or internet-popular breeds with compromised health. Every dog should expect to live a life without hugely increased health risks related to extreme conformation. But sadly, this study helps us to grasp the full extent of the serious health issues affecting these dogs. Especially in the lead-up to Christmas, we should give dogs a special present by putting the needs of the dog before the desires of the human. We aim to curb the increasing numbers of rogue breeders from filling the demand for these dogs — including some imported from overseas — with no regard for health and welfare. We urge would-be owners and breeders to think carefully about any breeding or buying decisions when it comes to French Bulldogs, and make use of health testing, evidence-based resources and expert advice. BOAS - do you know what it means for your dog? Although several brachcephalic breeds, such as the Bulldog, were initially selected for use in fighting, today they are more commonly seen as a popular companion animal. This may be explained by the fact that a short nose makes a dog look more human-like, with large, round, wide set eyes and rounded faces thought to be instinctively attractive to humans. These juvenile facial features are a form of paedomorphism, whereby juvenile morphological features are retained in adult animals; which in the case of the dog has been driven by artificial selection for these traits in closed breeding populations. Selection for a brachycephalic head shape to satisfy our human preferences has come at a cost for the dogs concerned who can suffer from restricted breathing. The signs of this are shortness of breath, snoring, wheezing, gagging, regurgitation, and exercise intolerance. BOAS may not be fully evident in young puppies, but clear signs may be seen as the puppies develop into adult dogs. Anatomical abnormalities seen in many of these breeds are believed to be directly related to their skull conformation shape. This happens because the soft tissue in the mouth and larynx is crammed into the reduced skeletal space. The soft tissue partially blocks the larynx and restricts the passage of air. In addition, the nostrils of brachycephalic dogs are narrowed stenotic nares due to lack of development. These abnormalities encourage complete collapse of the airways laryngeal collapse. Clinical signs are often progressive, with dogs often deteriorating over time. Prognosis also worsens with time, as the later stages of laryngeal collapse are very difficult to surgically improve — in some cases necessitating permanent tracheostomy. The dog is struggling to breathe and therefore cannot enjoy some of the ordinary doggy pleasures such as play or healthy walks. They struggle to effectively cool down and often seek cool surfaces to lie on. They will also adopt a splayed-out, stretched neck posture to aid them in cooling and breathing. Dogs are unable to sweat but pant instead to cool down. Normal dogs have a large surface area within the nose, which contains an array of delicate turbinates. In brachycephalic dogs, however, the nasal conchae are too small and air can barely pass through them. This results in severely impaired thermoregulation. For this reason, brachycephalic dogs are particularly sensitive to warm temperatures and often require many hours to recover from exercise. Diagnosis of BOAS by physical examination requires an anaesthetic and then surgical resection of the soft palate and reshaping of the nostrils. Anaesthesia itself is high risk in brachycephalic breeds and these procedures are invasive and expensive. It is important that informed decisions are made when choosing a breed and encouragement given to select a dog based on health rather than appearance. Consider this before choosing a brachycephalic dog: BOAS has potentially severe welfare implications for large numbers of dogs. It will do so generation after generation unless dogs selected for breeding have less extreme physical features. The effects can be of long duration, affecting a dog throughout its life. Potential dog owners who choose a brachycephalic breed are contributing to this welfare problem. Potential dog owners who insist on a less extreme type of conformation for their pet will be helping to restore a dog breed to its earlier type.
