Looking beyond just the pet industry In an effort help you understand why the market for buying puppies especially a more 'expensive' breed like the German Shepherd in Michigan is poor, we've pulled a few examples from Thumbtack's business survey mentioned above. I have had a person as far as New Mexico drive in to pick up his puppy, and one couple came in three times for three different puppies over the years from Massachusetts. You also have the option to fly in and take the puppy back with you in a Sherpa bag.I have had people fly in and take puppies back in Sherpa bags from as far west at Washington and California, as far east as Maine, and as far south as Georgia. Since some dames possess narrow birth canals that can lead to complications, it is important for you as an owner to play an active part in the pregnancy process and consult with your veterinarian if any problems arise. With careful attention and vigilance, your dam can have a healthy pregnancy and delivery. Female English bulldogs require extra care when they become pregnant they're called dams once they're pregnant. Take your dog to the veterinarian. When you suspect your dam is pregnant, take her to the veterinarian to confirm your suspicions and to determine how far along she is. English bulldog pregnancies usually last 9 weeks. While you are at the vet's office, be sure to talk to your veterinarian about a natural birth or a C-section for your dog. Since some dams have trouble delivering, your dog may need to undergo a C-section to ensure the health of her puppies and herself. Consult with your veterinarian for the best choice to follow. Maintain your dam's regular diet and schedule during the first 5 weeks of pregnancy. An English bulldog may experience stress if her routine is altered, which may negatively affect her pregnancy. Feed your dog the same brand and same amount of food as you did prior to her pregnancy. Do not increase her food intake at this time since too much weight gain may cause the puppies to grow too large. Also, do not give your dog extra vitamins or supplements unless your veterinarian advises otherwise. Excessive amounts of vitamin A or D can lead to birth defects. Be sure your dog receives regular exercise during these weeks. Take her on a walk once a day to prevent her from gaining too much weight. Increase your dog's food intake by 25 per cent during the sixth week to support the growing puppies and encourage milk production. Increase the food little by little throughout the week, until you reach an added 25 per cent of food. In the seventh week, increase your dam's food intake by another 25 per cent. Again, add the food little by little throughout the week. Your dam should have her food split into two meals per day. Divide your dog's food into three meals a day to avoid bloating after the seventh week. At this time, you should also prepare a whelping birthing box for your dam. Use a large shallow box or a plastic kiddie pool as the whelping area. Line the bottom of the box with disposable diapers; the absorbent side should be facing upwards. Then, lay clean towels on top of the diapers. Put the box in a quiet, warm and dry place in your home. Place a space heater or heat lamp close to the box since the puppies will need to stay warm around .Introduce your dog to the box and give her time to get used to it. Watch your dog for signs of labour. Your dam can give birth any time between day 59 to day 65 of her pregnancy. During this time, carefully monitor her for signs of upcoming labour, such as frequent urination, panting, vomiting or shivering. She may look uncomfortable or nervous and may scratch at blankets in an effort to nest. Take your dog's temperature. When your dam begins to show signs of upcoming labour, use a rectal thermometer to take her temperature two or three times a day. Your dog's temperature should drop from a normal .Once the temperature drops, make sure you or a family member will be home for the next 24 hours to monitor your dog's labour and pregnancy. Monitor your dog during the delivery. Do not leave your dam's side once she starts giving birth to her puppies. Your dog should be able to handle the delivery on her own, but call your vet immediately if she is unable to pass a puppy within an hour. TIP If your English bulldog has hook worm or roundworms, she may infect her puppies. Take your bulldog to the veterinarian for the administration of a safe dewormer. If you opt for a natural birth, ask your vet to find out how many puppies will be in the litter. You should know this information to ensure all the puppies are accounted for during the delivery. English bulldogs come into season about every 6 to 8 months. Give your dam the proper time to recover from her pregnancy and do not breed her more than once every year. Do not use any flea treatments on your pregnant dam since they can lead to serious complications during the pregnancy. Instead, use flea comb to remove the fleas. Bringing about a litter of English bulldogs requires artificial insemination of the female. While her gestation period is the same as other canines -- approximately two months -- the birth process is not. You must schedule a cesarean section with your vet. However, some English Bulldogs can give birth naturally, although repeated litters by breeders are usually done through C-sections as a safety precaution. I f you are concerned about whether or not your dog will need to have a C-section once labor commences, speak to your vet who will be able to recommend whether an unassisted birth or a medical procedure is needed for your particular dog. If your dog is currently in the middle of labor and you are worried they are struggling, please phone your vet immediately for medical aid. This is often shown through restlessness, making and remaking their bed and losing their appetite. Once labor properly begins, your dog will begin to start to pant, as well as begin to pace and move around. Keep an eye on her and regularly check her temperature with a rectal thermometer. If you are going to the vet for delivery, this is when you should set off. How to deliver English bulldog puppies naturally Once your dog has begun her labor, she may become increasingly agitated and digging her bed, as well as vomiting. This is when you need to be by your dog, monitoring her progress. Labor can last between 4 and 24 hours. If you are noticing her is straining too much or passing greenish discharge, call your vet immediately. Once this has happened, you need to start preparing for imminent birth, preparing a whelping box and taking your dog to the vet if you are having an assisted birth at the animal hospital. Nursing Schedule In the first four to five days, newborn bulldog puppies need to nurse every two hours. It may look as though the pups are feeding more often -- or even constantly -- because not all the mother dog's teats will carry milk at the same time. As they get older, they will need to feed less frequently. Make sure that all the puppies get their turn at the teat during feeding time -- sometimes the larger or stronger pups will push aside smaller or weaker puppies. Bottle Feeding If you are bottle-feeding the puppies, you'll need to do so every two hours, day and night, until they are 6 days old. After that, the puppies can go to a feeding schedule of six to eight feedings every day until they are 3 weeks old, and four feedings daily beyond that point. At each feeding, a puppy should receive 1cc of prepared formula milk for every ounce of its body weight. Transition to Food Around 1 month after birth, puppies typically start eating some soft foods, although they will continue to nurse from the mother until they reach 8 weeks old. As puppies start eating soft foods, you will need to clean out each puppy's facial wrinkles -- the puppies and the mother may be unable to clean their wrinkles completely. If soft food gets stuck in a puppy's wrinkles, it may develop infection or sores. Typically, the mother dog will start to wean the dogs between 5 weeks and 7 weeks after birth. Drop-In Body Temperature The temperature of your dog should be between and degrees Fahrenheit if the dog is healthy. After the second reading of a low temperature, labor should commence within 24 hours. Milk Production Similar to humans, females provide milk to their pups shortly after birth. Their bodies prepare themselves for birth before even giving birth. In addition to swollen breasts, your dog may have swollen nipples and even some redness around the area. You must be available to your dog during the birthing process for the simple fact that she may instinctively cling to your side. It depends on where you live and who you go to for a c-section whether it will cost you more or less. In bulldogs, natural birth can pose severe risks to their mothers and puppies. It is usually impossible for puppies to descend properly into the birth canal due to their size and shape. When they get into the canal, they will probably get stuck. Even though it is technically not necessary for you to assist your dog during delivery, it is always a good idea to be prepared in case of an emergency. The umbilical cord can be cut, the membrane can be removed, a towel can be used to rub the baby, and the baby can be kept warm. In addition, your female dog may require assistance walking and urinating after giving birth. When Can Bulldogs Be Bred? Bulldogs often begin going into heat between six and eight months of age.
