They love to assist their owners in any way they can so giving them things to do will always have your dog alert and ready. An obstacle course is good for keeping your dog active, keeping joints and muscles flexible. Socialization Socializing your dog will keep them well mannered. Repeat, repeat, and repeat. Ignore Bad Behavior Ignore bad behavior. Dogs are like children. They will do just about anything to gain your attention. Good behavior is rewarded with treats, attention, and praise. Therefore, bad behavior should not be rewarded with a treat, attention, or praise. Even a squirt of water from a water bottle will assist in correcting bad behavior. Pulling on a leash- STOP walking and ignore your dog. This will take great patience but this method is proven to be successful. Once your dog relaxes or quits pulling you may proceed to walk. Removing the distraction, this will cause your dog to focus on you rather than that interesting squirrel playing in the yard. Distractions are everywhere, but when you are starting to train your dog to be sure to do so in a distraction-free area. Over time introduce small distractions in your training. However, some will argue that scruffing is perfectly safe and produces desired results. It is wise to use this method only if you properly understand the technique and the disposition of your dog. Before you set out to do a training session with your bulldog, be aware of certain issues like: Age of your dog- this will determine the energy level of your training sessions Conditions of the environment- Is it too hot or too cold? Does the environment have any health concerns like a park may have hazardous plants or debris? Be observant. Keep this in mind when doing any training. They cannot handle heat and humidity due to their flat faces, which makes them prone to breathing issues. Some will argue a harness will cause the dog to build up muscle and hinder stopping but rather will encourage pulling. However, pulling can happen on a collar too. At least a harness will cause harm to your dog. Proper collar or harness training will keep your dog from pulling. Clicker training is a very popular method, especially among professional dog trainers. You can purchase a clicker, however, a click of your tongue, a whistle, or a clap of your hands will have the same effect. However, anyone can clap or whistle so a clicker is preferable. Proper training is essential for the health and happiness of not only for your dog but for you as well. Many websites will offer tips and tricks to assist you. It has long been said that the best way to get your dog to obey is to establish dominance over them. This is meant to mirror the hierarchy of wolf packs, but even our understanding of wolf behavior has changed over time. In fact, the term alpha is no longer used by one of the leading wolf institutes in the world who even helped popularize the term years ago, the International Wolf Center. And as it turns out, this is how wolf packs are formed. The same logic applies to your Bulldog. Domestic dogs might be far removed from their wolf cousins, but there are still some instincts that remain quite similar, such as pack behavior. Rather, your role is one of the parent and natural leader. Why Is My Bulldog Misbehaving? So, why is your Bulldog acting up then? At the end of the day, your dog is an animal, and instinct is a major facet of how animals act. While the behaviors may look silly or even a little dumb sometimes , they often make sense in the context of instinct. Behaviors to Avoid When Disciplining Your Bulldog There are many different schools of thought regarding how you should discipline your Bulldog. Regardless of what you decide to do, the following guidelines will help you establish the right tone of relationship with your Bulldog, making it easier to help them behave properly. Encouraging Aggressive Play or Behavior There are a lot of ways that we inadvertently encourage aggressive behaviors in our Bulldogs without meaning to. One of those ways is through aggressive play, or we might accidentally reward aggressive behaviors. Wrestling your Bulldog, for example, can be fun, but it can also encourage aggressive behaviors. Similarly, rewarding your Bully with a treat after a rough play session can encourage them to continue acting in such a fashion. In this spectacle, groups of dogs would be pitted against a chained bull in a battle that often led to the death of either the bull or the dogs. The Bulldogs used for this sport were trained and bred to be far more aggressive than the amiable companion dogs we have today. Thankfully, there are plenty of other ways you can play with your Bully and still have a great time. Physical Punishments Much worse than aggressive play is using physical punishments to discipline your Bulldog. Furthermore, when you resort to physical punishment, you lose the opportunity to teach your Bulldog something new using the methods outlined above. Truthfully, your Bully wants to please you! Maintaining eye contact with your dog can actually be a sign of affection. Many breeds show affection in such a manner, including other bully breeds like Rottweilers or Pitbulls.
