Unfortunately, pets are sometimes unintentionally left out of their owners' disaster preparedness plans which makes it difficult to know what to do with them during an emergency. Luckily, you can plan ahead for your pets using these tips: Listen to your veterinarian Make sure your pet wears a collar with up to date information on it, get them microchipped, and have them vaccinated. These recommendations will come in handy during a disaster and help you avoid any potential pitfalls, such as being unable to get into a shelter with an unvaccinated pet or losing them during an evacuation. If possible, take your pet's medical records with you and attach their rabies tag to their collar. Royal George Goldendoodles is a very small home breeding operation that produces only a few puppies every year from their two breeding dogs. The puppies are F1BB medium Goldendoodles. That gives you the opportunity to meet the breeder in person, check out the conditions in which the breeding dogs and puppies are kept, and get an overall vibe for the setup. The kennels should be clean, bright, and airy with fresh water available to the occupants at all times. The dogs should have access to some outside space, and they should have comfortable beds and a few toys, too. If the breeder declines your request to visit them without a valid reason, for example, due to Covid restrictions, you should be suspicious and make further inquiries about the operation. Any breeder who suggests meeting at a service station or some other random place to pick up your puppy should be avoided. These are classic red flags for puppy mills. An F1b is known as a second-generation mini goldendoodle with the pups mother being already an F1 Goldendoodle and the pups dad being a mini poodle also. So the difference between F1 and F1b is that the mom is not a golden retriever but an actual F1 Goldendoodle. They also have very soft curly hair but with almost no shedding. This F1b version is semi-hypoallergenic and a better choice for anyone who has pet allergies. The F1b also should be brushed on a daily basis but will need to be groomed more frequently then a F1. While these questions may seem quite personal, it is part of the process of matching you up with the right dog. If they do think you would make a good pet parent, and they have a dog to match, many shelters will want to do a home visit and a meet and greet with your family, just to make sure that it really is a good match. If you are approved, there will be an adoption fee. Because these are non-profit organizations, that fee is necessary to cover costs including veterinary care, spaying and neutering, microchipping, and so forth. But they will be available to assist you if you have any questions or issues that you need assistance with. How To Become A Rescue Animal Foster Parent If you are an experienced pet parent, especially of labradoodles, and you have time and space, you might be able to help one of these organizations by volunteering to foster recuperating pups while the rescue works to find their permanent home. Are You Ready To Foster? Fostering is a big responsibility and you should consider carefully whether you are well-suited to the task before approaching an organization and offering your help. Consider the following: You will be responsible for feeding and grooming the pup; will your budget allow you to do this appropriately? Unfortunately, most rescues are not able to provide you with an allowance to support this activity. Foster pets have often had a difficult life and may need special care or have behavioral issues. Do you have the time and experience to deal with these types of animals? Do you have enough space for this type of dog, which may be of medium-sized and would benefit from outdoor areas to play in? Do you have other pets in the home, and if so, how do they get on with other animals? Bear in mind that the labradoodle you will be fostering may not have been well-socialized before arriving in your home. Once you have decided that you are up to the task, you should contact local rescues to see about volunteering. Most rescues will restrict volunteering to a certain radius to make their task of transporting animals and providing medical treatment more practical. The application process will be different depending on where you apply, though you can expect to be asked to provide similar information as if you were adopting. They will want to know about you, your home, your lifestyle, and your experience caring for dogs, and especially labradoodles. Some rescues have no central, physical premises, and so, they will need to find foster homes for all their dogs from newborn pups to happy pets that just need rehoming, to dogs with medical issues or that otherwise need special care. But many rescues will have facilities where they will keep the happiest and healthiest pups, for whom they can expect to find homes quickly, and they will be looking for fosterers primarily to take on special cases. In these cases, rescues will be looking for foster homes for dogs that become stressed out in the shelter environment. As well as including dogs with behavioral issues, this will include larger dogs, typically over 40 pounds, who really need more space than is available at the shelter. You may also be asked to foster dogs that need individual attention, such as hand-feeding, medicine administered on a regular basis, or a dog that is recuperating after an operation such as being neutered or spayed. You might also be asked to look after a senior dog that needs hospice care until the end of their lives. How long you can expect a foster dog to be with you depends on their individual circumstances. Healthy dogs that are ready to foster might only be with you for a few days or weeks while permanent homes are located for them. Young puppies might be with you for a month or two, while older dogs in hospice care might be with you for several months. It is a good idea to discuss with the rescue how long you are able to take on your charges when volunteering. Your Responsibilities As A Foster Parent If you do decide to foster dogs, your responsibility will go beyond feeding, grooming, and loving the pups while they are in your care. While the shelter will pay for medical treatments for the dog, you will be expected to transport them to and from veterinary appointments. You will also need to transport them to and from various adoption events. Most dogs in foster care will need to undertake some kind of basic training, either in the home or at a training center, and that will also be one of your responsibilities. Our Foster Dog Silla was a Owner Surrender Story In fact, our very first foster dog was a year-old black lab, Silla, that was surrendered by her family. I admit I was confused as to why anyone would let such a sweet lab go. From what I do know, they lived on a farm and adopted two new herding breed dogs. The two new dogs did not get along with Silla and fights broke out. They felt that giving Silla a quiet home to retire in was in her best interest. Again, I am not here to judge. Did they feel guilty? Why have you decided you need to give your dog away? If your situation is temporary, can you find a friend or family member to help by taking your dog in for a few months until you get back on your feet? I can no longer afford my dog because of job loss. Same as above, see if someone will help you and your dog out until you find a new job. I am moving to an apartment that does not allow dogs. Find an apartment that does allow dogs. I know sometimes it can be hard, but there are plenty of landlords that do allow dogs. We just realized my child is allergic to dogs. Are you certain it is the dog your kids are allergic too? Have you tried bathing your dog? Brushing him more often? Keeping the dog out of the areas your child sleeps and plays? We just had a new baby and no longer have time for a dog. A baby may keep you busy, but it has been proven that kids who grow up with a dog are healthier. Children that grow up with a dog learn responsibility and compassion for animals. You will make time for both baby and dog. Many activities you can do with your dog and child… go for walks or play ball in the backyard together. I cannot afford my dogs health care, because of an illness or injury. Talk to your vet about payment options or look into Care Credit. And sometimes we have to make tough decisions, but there are options out there, you just need to find them. I got a new job and no longer have time for a dog. Consider doggy-daycare or a dog walker. You did make a commitment to your dog when you first adopted him. Do your best to make it work. I understand it is really scary if your rescue dog has bitten your child. This should never be taken lightly. But please look at the situation with a clear mind. My dog has bitten another dog. Did you know that it could take up to 3 months for a rescue dog to feel completely comfortable in her new home? If you are certain you adopted the wrong dog, talk the rescue or shelter you got the dog from. An important note about rehoming a dog that has bitten a child or dog. Please disclose this information before giving your dog away. No matter how desperate you are, do not allow another child to be bitten. Do you really want another family to go through what you have? The rescue I volunteer for actually requires their adopters to surrender the dog back to them if needed at any time. Some rescues will even post your dog on their website and let you keep him until you find a good home. Option 2: Turn to Friends and Family for Help I recommend you start by asking friends and family, even co-workers if they would be willing to take in your dog. This way you know the dog will be well taken care of. Option 4: Ask Your Veterinarian Your vet may have adoption resources you could turn to, or maybe even know someone looking to adopt a new dog. Option 5: Rehoming a Dog on Adopt-a-Pet Website Adopt-a-Pet is a well-known online adoption website, and they have a rehoming listing service too! Adopt a pet makes it easy to list by simply filling out the form online and uploading pictures. Rehome at Adopt-a-Pet also has a ton of resources for you to try and keep your dog! But when it comes to dogs, it can be sketchy. Some very bad people lurk on the social selling site. There are also stories of puppy mills posting on Craigslist, so again, please do your research before buying or selling on this platform. Now that I scared you, I have to admit something… we adopted our yellow lab Bear from Craigslist. We got lucky, the family rehoming him got lucky. Bear grew much larger than the family thought he would… at a whopping 97 lbs, he was too big to live in a small trailer home with no yard. He was bursting at the seams with built up energy and was not a happy dog. She realized this and came to the difficult conclusion that they needed to rehome Bear. A happy ending can happen, but you need to do your homework. Ask a lot of questions and meet the family before agreeing they can adopt your dog.
