Cardboard Box One of the least expensive whelping boxes is simply a cardboard box. Make sure it is big enough that your dog can stretch out in it. The nice thing about a cardboard box is that, once you no longer need the whelping box, you can simply throw it away. To make a whelping box out of cardboard, use these easy instructions: Find a box that your dog can comfortably lie down and stretch out in but not much larger than that. The sides should be at least to inches high. You want the sides to be too high for the puppies to climb over, but not so high your dog can't get over it when she wants a break. Smaller breed dogs will be fine with 12 inches, whereas larger breeds will need 24 inches. Cut a "door" into the side of the box for your dog to move in and out of the box. The width of the doorway should be about twice her body's width, and the edge should be high enough to keep puppies in but not so high she hits her belly on it. You will want to use some sort of covering on the cardboard to keep it from getting wet and to make cleaning it easy. You could line it with duct tape, plastic sheeting, tarps, or plastic drop cloths made for painting. Then cover whatever material you use with newspaper or old towels to make the flooring soft and comfortable. Plastic Storage Bin A plastic storage bin can also be used as a whelping box. You want to use the under-the-bed storage type so that the sides will be short enough for the mother dog to easily get in and out. If you decide to go this route, fold old towels on the bottom to ensure there is no chance that your dog will slip when she is moving around. Be aware that depending on the size of your pups, they may be able to get over the sides of the bin as they get bigger. In that case, you can extend the sides of the bin with cardboard. Ideas that will work for bigger dogs, such as Labrador Retrievers and Rottweiler dogs , include: Appliance Boxes If you have a mid-sized breed, you may still be able to find a cardboard box. Check with appliance stores and home improvement stores that carry items that would require bigger boxes. If you can't find one, you still have some inexpensive alternatives. The downside to using these boxes is once the puppies get large enough, they will be able to get over the sides, which they wouldn't with a traditional whelping box with sides at least inches high. Kiddie Pool A hard-sided plastic kiddie pool usually costs less than twenty dollars, and you can get them in several sizes. They are also easy to clean. These pools will last for several litters of puppies. However, just as with appliance boxes, the problem with the kiddie pool is that the sides may not be high enough to keep the puppies in as they get bigger. There are newer types of kiddie pools made just for dogs that have higher sides. Another option for larger dog breeds is to use a water trough , which has higher sides. They're much more expensive but very sturdy and can be reused for whelping, as well as an outdoor pool or bathing area for your dogs. To make a whelping box out of a kiddie pool, find a pool size where your dog can lay out comfortably with some extra room for the puppies. You can line it with a round whelping pad, old towels, newspaper, or even covers made specifically for kiddie pools used for whelping. An excellent safety precaution is adding a PVC pipe frame that serves as puppy rails to keep the mom from rolling over and crushing a newborn pup against the sides. Just be sure the puppies can't get stuck under or between the pipes. To keep puppies from getting out of the pool when they get larger, you can run x-pens or playpen panels around the outside of the pool. Make sure you leave a doorway for the mom to come and go! Whelping Box Plans If you want to build your own cheap whelping box but prefer a different style, you can find simple whelping box plans on the Internet. You'll also need to be handy in order to build this box, as tools required are a circular saw and drill. The floor is optional, and the instructions allow for removing it to create a bottomless box. The puppy rails are made from the wood strips, although you could also improvise and make a set of puppy rails using PVC pipes and connectors. Building a Whelping Box Another excellent set of plans for a whelping box built with plywood and hardware is found in this YouTube video. The box described in this video has the puppy rails built into the sides as well as two shelf areas in the back for supplies and can be placed on cheap vinyl flooring tiles for easy cleanup. The box was made for a labradoodle , but you can adjust the dimensions of the plans shown in the video for your own dog's size. Cheap Whelping Boxes for Sale If you're not mechanically inclined and balk at the idea of building anything with tools and lumber, you can purchase a box. There are plenty of options if you're on a strict budget. Check with local seller websites such as Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace to see if anyone is selling a box. You can also look on eBay. If you know of any breeders in your area, you could try contacting them to see if they might have a box they want to sell or possibly even rent out to you. It's made of plastic and comes with one whelping pad and PVC puppy rails. If you plan ahead, you can check out the websites of some major manufacturers of high-quality whelping boxes to see if they have sales. Easy to Improvise There are a number of less expensive, homemade whelping box ideas that will work for dogs of all sizes. You can improvise to create suitable whelping boxes that won't break your budget without too much trouble. Just spend some time looking at whelping boxes so you know how they are made and pick the most comfortable and safest style for you, your dog, and her pups. Petsmart Dishes: They should be bottom heavy so they can not be tipped on the side, or carried away. Yes, pups will carry them! So make sure they are heavy on the bottom, ceramic or stainless steel. Food: I am curently using is Taste of the Wild. I add sardines in water once or twice a week to account for additional dietary needs when feeding grain free. Water: Fresh water available at all times. If your city has problems with water please use bottled water to be on the safe side. Treats: I do not feed commercial treats. I prefer natural bits of raw carrots, bananas, apples, celery. The dogs love them and they are healthy and good for their teeth. Please do not use hooves or antlers. Veterinary dentist report that the most common cause of teeth breakage are hooves and antlers. They are just too hard for dogs. If a pup or dog breaks a tooth it might need specialized dental care like root canals and other expensive procedures, not to mention the repercussion on their health for life. Toys: Dogs chew on things…even toys. Do not buy small toys that can become a choking hazard or toys with small squeekies that the dog can pull out and choke! These things can cause intestinal obstructions that end up in life threats and expensive and serious surgeries. Make sure the toys are chew resistant and inspect them often to make sure that they pup is not pulling little bits off. Please do not buy rawhide. Pieces of rawhide can be pulled off and when wet become sticky and choke dogs. Bed: Soft beds with bumpers. The dogs like the lay their chins on the sides. Inspect the beds often to make sure your dog has not pulled out little bits of stuffing. Be specially careful with zippers. Brush: Yorkshire Terrier dogs are long hair dogs. They have to be groomed regularly to avoid matts. My preference is for pin brushes the kind that have NO plastic tips. Chris Cristensen original brush is ideal. If you brush regularly and maintain your dog with proper shampoo and conditioner you will have no problem with matts and will never need to have your dog shaved down to the skin nor use slicker brushes. A nice short puppy cut is easy to maintain between professional groomings. Please do not cut your dogs hair if you are not a trained groomer. Do not attempt to use clippers or scissors if you do not have experience with them. Have a professional do it. You will save time and money and your dog will always look tidy and clean. Comb: A metal comb sometimes known as Greyhound comb is ideal. Shampoo and Conditioner: I have used many shampoos and conditioners over the years. Time again and again I come back to the same. Its inexpensive, available every where and it does a great job. Cowboy Magic Shampoo and the Conditoner. It is very good. The dogs do well on it. I add sardines in water one or twice a week, sometimes I give them raw food. I add beef broth with no salt to the kibble. If you order from Chewy they will send it straight to your door. However, read on because you need more before whelping your first litter of pups. Lucky for us everything went flawlessly! The Essential Items Our must-have whelping kit items. Update 2: I contacted EZWhelp and they said this system might now work for a larger breed dog and that you might consider something a little sturdier for Golden Retrievers and larger. Update 3: We decided to go with the very expensive Magnabox Whelping Box and we are very satisfied. The Magnabox is very sturdy and easy to assemble. The main drawback is the price. If you plan on using your whelping box for many years I highly recommend the Magnabox. We liked it so much we bought a second one recently to make the cleaning process easier. Heat Lamp — Newborn puppies cannot regulate their body temperature. Last year Raven stayed with her pups and they cuddled up to her for warmth, but we also got a heat lamp to help keep our pups warm. We like the heat lamps with the clamp and attach our lamps to the edge of our whelping box. Puppy Baby Scale — You want to make sure your puppies are gaining weight. We weigh our puppies every day starting from day 1. As mentioned earlier, puppies cannot control their body temperature and we want to make sure our puppy room is not too hot nor too cold. Help The Whelp Our vet and breeding friends advised that we the humans help in a few areas when whelping a litter of puppies. Head Lamp — One of the things we did not use as we had ample light since we whelped our first puppy in the late morning around 10am and finished in the early afternoon around 2pm. However, a headlamp will allow you both your hands to be free while shining a nice light in all the little nooks and crannies. Hemostat — Use to clamp the umbilical cord. Medical Scissors — Use to cut the umbilical cord. Unwaxed Dental Floss — Use to tie off the umbilical cord. Tail Wrap — for dogs tails to protect from draining fluids. Vaseline — for taking a rectal temperature and in case one of the puppies gets stuck. Keeping Things Clean What supplies will you need before whelping a litter of puppies? Overall our whelping area got pretty messy, but having these items will help to keep your pup, mama, and the whelping box a little bit tidier. Alcohol Prep Pads — On the theme of keeping clean, use these to clean off the hemostat and scissors after each use. Iodine Prep Pads — Use on the cut umbilical cords to keep the area as clean as possible. Receiving Cloths — Use to grip and dry each puppy. Pee Pads — We used the large pee pads to put under mom to catch afterbirth to try and keep our whelping area as clean as possible during the whelping. Paper Towels — To keep your whelping box area as clean as possible. Hand Sanitizer — Try to keep yourself as sanitary as possible. We used hand sanitizer not only during the whelping, but the entire 8 weeks we had the litter at our house. Exam Gloves — We used a different pair of gloves with each puppy again to try and keep things as clean as possible. When each pup was born we shaved an area to identify each puppy. For example, left shoulder, right shoulder, left hip, right hip, etc. We have an inexpensive battery powered beard trimmer similar to this one Puppy Collars — Not your regular nylon buckle puppy collars. Shave mark, color collar, distinguishing features, time of birth, etc. Puppy Weight Chart — We track our puppies weights daily to make sure their gaining each day. Having a handy chart next to your puppy scale or whelping box makes it easy to do this on a daily basis. She could end up with an upset stomach and diarrhea. For the record Raven ate 3 last time without issue. She can sometimes chew it down too far which can cause issues. Instead crimp the umbilical with the hemostat and make the cut with your scissors then tie off the cords with your unwaxed dental floss. Use your aspiration bulb to clean out the airways — mouth, nose, and throat. If mama is pushing for more than a half hour without anything happening then contact your veterinarian. Dogs are perfectly capable of handling the entire whelping process on their own. This was proven when I woke up early morning and Raven already whelped puppies on her own. We rushed her and her newborns to the whelping box where the rest of her puppies were delivered. Number 2: Be prepared with all of your whelping supplies well in advance. Puppies can come early! Make sure you have all you need weeks before the due date. So, to ease the anxiety, be prepared by making sure you have everything you need on your whelping checklist. Although I live in Scotland both my dogs came from a breeder in South Wales Courtlands We got the first one there because both Tora and Lomond Hills in Scotland couldn't supply a puppy in the time scale we were hoping for. Went back to Wales for the second because we were so pleased with the looks and temperament of our first. I have since spoken to other owners who have purchased from both Tora and Lomond Hills and all spoke positively about their dogs and experience of both breeders. Regards grooming your dog yourself that is exactly how I felt and went to a local groomer who does training courses for people wanting to be full time groomers. I explained I only wanted to do my own dog and not start up a business and they took me on for a one day course, taught me the basics and I've done both of my ever since. I'm not as quick as a professional groomer but I can groom the dogs at a time that suits me, no leaving the dogs at a groomers. Can do it as often or as little as I want , cut as short or leave as long as suits. Would recommend it for anyone who is interested. The groomer I went to is in Lanarkshire, don't know if that is anywhere near you but you could always ask someone more local to you if they would do something similar. Categories Dog Fun , Dog Training Boxers, like any other active dog breed, needs their fair share of daily exercise. Swimming may seem like a great option for a sunny day. However, Boxers are heavy-boned dogs with a wide frame. So, can Boxers swim or will they sink? Boxers can and often do enjoy swimming, however, they are at risk while swimming in bodies of water. For this reason, safety precautions are necessary. Plenty of Boxers have successfully become good swimmers. But before you throw your Boxer in the deep end, there are things you should know. Some breeds, such as the Golden Retriever or Chesapeake Retriever, were actually bred to swim. Needless to say, this is not the case with Boxers. And while plenty of Boxers regularly swim, they have clear disadvantages in the water that all owners need to know about before putting them in the pool. In fact, I think the adorable faces are the best part of the Boxer. Specifically, it makes it more difficult for Boxers to breath while treading in water. Dog breeds with these facial characteristics are called Brachycephalic dogs. All of which, should be carefully monitored when put into large bodies of water. However, when these dogs have to tilt their heads upwards while in water, the restriction can be much greater. The unnatural position while dog paddling puts your Boxer at a huge disadvantage while swimming. So, the best way to help them in the water is to provide a life jacket to give them a more natural posture in the water. Weighing in at around 60 pounds and standing roughly 22 inches tall, Boxers are a fairly typical medium dog. Combine that with the difficulty of breathing and you could potentially have a real big problem on your hands. Once again, the best way to counter this problem is to provide them with a life jacket. As you may have guessed, Boxers are not one of them. In fact, they were not purposely bred to be anywhere near water. On the contrary, Boxers were specifically bred for bull-baiting now, an illegal blood sport and later on, as multi-purpose farm dogs. The most successful working Boxers most likely never even played in the nearby lakes! In addition, they pulled carriages for butchers to the slaughterhouses, among many other farm jobs. Can Your Boxer Swim? Whether a Boxer is good at swimming depends on the individual dog. Even whether a Boxer will enjoy a swim will greatly vary. With that said, we surveyed real Boxer owners to ask the question: can your Boxer swim? Responses are collected from various dog forums, including the popular Boxer Subreddit. Real Owner Answers: 1. She knew she loved water the moment we first visited a lake. It was love at first sight for her. My girl will only go as far as getting her toes wet, but will avoid getting her chest wet. My dog will sink and walk along the bottom. She will claw at me when I attempt to teach her how to swim. Still a big improvement from before. I spent a couple hours in the water with him trying to help him keep his front paws under water while paddling. In water, he goes nearly vertical even with a life vest on. Before you start, remember that you should never force your Boxer into the water. After all, Boxers are brachycephalic dog breeds. Anxiety, fear and panic, combined with their unique facial structures will make it even harder to breath while swimming. Here are the steps to getting your Boxer to swim with you in no time! Boxers Need a Life Vest Important! And by equipment, I really only mean a life vest. Even the AKC recommends the use of life vests. Not only will a life vest give your Boxer a nice boost of confidence but it also gives you, the owner, some peace of mind. Unless your dog is already super experienced, I never recommend going without a life vest. A big reason why we recommend a life vest is because novice dog swimmers will only paddle their front feet as the bottom feet looks for the ground. It looks very comfortable for the dog, which is crucial in the beginning stages. Plus, the bright colors makes your dog highly visible. Next, you can fill a portable kid pool or bathroom tub with water and let them literally get their feet wet. Keep in mind, the second step should take a while. Spend multiple days playing in a tub of water prior to the day planned for swimming. Whether a pool or lake, let your dog sniff the water and get used to the sight of the body of water. Start Shallow This seems obvious, but apparently not to every dog owner. Always start with the shallow end first. The quickest way to freak out your Boxer is by throwing the dog into the deep end for the first time. Before getting into the shallow end, make sure the life vest is on at this point. Instead, try bribing them with some delicious treats make sure to only bring the best. As they get closer into the water, or deeper in, make sure to give positive praises along the way. Boxers thrive on positive reinforcement. So, it really helps their confidence by doing so. If your dog has a favorite toy, make sure to bring that with you too. Try throwing their toy into the water. Once your Boxer gets into the water, slowly bribe them to go deeper and deeper. Here are some extra tips from the professionals. PetMD suggests that you always start with a dog leash in addition to the life vest on your Boxer. Not only will it keep your dog from swimming too far out, but it will give both you and your dog an extra sense of security. The best way to get your dog into the water is by getting into the water with them. Dogs learn a lot from their owners. As you will be in the water with your dog, teaching and assisting, I recommend that YOU wear protective clothing, such as jeans and a long sleeved shirt, to prevent being clawed or bruised. To get started, socialize young pups 6 to 8 weeks of age to a running water hose. This will stimulate curiosity and offer a new tactile experience. Small baby pools and shallow lake banks are great places to work with younger dogs in helping them to become comfortable with having their feet and legs submerged. Do not expect your dog to be a "natural". Starting to swim will require your patience and encouragement. It takes more than a few times in the pool or the lake before your Boxer starts to really enjoy himself. If your dog is strongly motivated by toys, use one that floats to coax him into the water. Teaching your dog to safely enter and exit the water is critical. If teaching in a pool, use the stairs to lower your dog into the water each time and as the exit as well. Some suggest that you use a large cone marker or bicycle flag to help visually mark the stair or shoreline exit for your dog. The first time you and your Boxer enter the water, try to make it a positive and pleasant experience. Support the dog's body with your arms underneath his chest and lower him into the water one step at a time. Some dogs will splash wildly around when they first start. This is normal and will soon subside as your dog starts to relax and learn to effectively propel himself through the water. The transitional step, when your Boxer's feet no longer touch the bottom, being totally suspended in the water, is most critical. Float him in front of you as walk around in the water, lending your support with your arm under his belly. Helping your Boxer to keep his front feet under the water will minimize splashing. You may need to repeat this a number of times depending how quickly his level of confidence increases. Once your dog feels, at ease in the water with your assistance, it is s time to let him start on his own. With your support, swim him out into the water or to the center of the pool and point him in the direction of his exit or the shoreline. Guide him to the steps or shoreline and praise heavily. Repeat as many times as needed to build his confidence. Next, encourage him to swim toward you, rather than to the exit or shoreline. Swimming is well known to slow progression, strengthening leg muscles, giving your older Boxer a therapeutic workout. Again, your Boxer should have a thorough check-up by his veterinarian before starting this type of exercise. Chances are, if you are just now introducing your older Boxer to swim, extra patience will be needed, as older dogs wiII not acclimate to the water as easily as the youngsters will. While he is swimming, you will need to lend extra support to his hindquarters. Using the longer type of canine life jacket will help in keeping his back end buoyant. Swimming sessions should be short, but gradually lengthened each time. Some dogs may need to start out for only one minute. Swimming Tips: Never leave your dog unattended around the pool. Teach him the entry and exit. Use a canine life jacket at all times. Swimming is hard work, so keep sessions short and do not overtire your Boxer. Use your dog's favorite floating toy or ball to help motivate him to get in the water. Try to let your Boxer swim with other accomplished swimming dogs. He will learn from them as well. Labradoodles have three different types of coats and variations within these three. Hair Coat Your dog will most likely shed if he has a hair coat that may be straight or wavy. But this is also the easiest coat of all to care for as your dog will naturally molt. You are more likely to get this type of coat from F1 Labradoodles, especially those puppies which take after their Labrador parent. Wool and Fleece Coat The other two coat types are wool and fleece, and both of these are low or minimal shedding types. Australian Labradoodles have one of these types of coats, as well as most other multi-generation Doodles. Although these dogs are likely to be low or minimal shedding, there is no guarantee that the dog will not shed. Labradoodle coat types vary from one dog to another, even within litters. Wool and fleece coats are high maintenance as far as grooming is concerned. If you have experience, then you can clip or hand strip the dog yourself. Otherwise, you will need to take your Doodle to a professional groomer and factor in the additional expense. Whichever way you look at it, a well-groomed Doodle is a joy to behold. It can lead to repetitive ear infections, and in severe cases, the dog can go deaf or require an operation to change the shape of his ear canal. If your dog is a low or minimal shedder, then the hair inside the ear flap should be regularly plucked. You can also do this at home or ask your groomer to do it during the visits. Grooming for Labradoodle — Nail Trimming The nails of your Doodle must be kept short for the paws to remain healthy. They can also break easily, and this usually happens at the base of the nail, where blood vessels and nerves are located and will require a trip to the vet. If you can hear the nails clicking on the floor, then they are too long. Most have safety guards to prevent you from cutting the nails too short. Some dogs may have tough nails that are hard to trim, but this may be less stressful for your dog, with less chance of pain or bleeding. Frequent bathing removes natural oils and causes the coat to become dry and harsh. Use a mild shampoo specially formulated for dogs. Stand your doodle in a tub, basin, or bath and put cotton balls in his ears to keep them dry inside. Wet him with warm water and apply shampoo from the neck down. Put a small amount of shampoo on your hands and gently wash his head. Rinse your doodle thoroughly with warm water. To keep the soap out of his eyes, put a dampened wash-cloth over his eye. Rub your doodle dry with a towel and then blow-dry if necessary and if he lets you! Then give him a brush or a comb. Grooming for Labradoodle — Cleaning the eyes If your dog has a discharge, if his eyes get a little sticky, or if he has dried deposits in the corner of his eyes, clean them gently with damp cotton wool. Do not use anything else unless instructed to do so by your vet. Ask your groomer to empty the anal glands every time you take your doodle for grooming. If not done then the blockages can lead to infection. Larger Labradoodles usually can express their own anal glands and do not need to have this done. This does not hurt your labradoodle but be sure to tell your groomer if your labradoodle has had a problem with his anal glands in the past or if you have had your Labradoodles anal glands removed. Grooming for Labradoodle — Brushing a Labradoodle Scruffy Doodles will need a good brushing once a week, whereas Doodles with fleece or wool coats will require an intensive grooming regime to avoid having to be clipped short. How to Brush Your Labradoodle Several brushing and combing sessions a week will keep the average Doodles neat and tidy. Daily brushing is even better if possible. Then go through the coat with a comb to make sure you have no mats or knots anywhere. Choosing the Right Brush Choosing the right brush is very important. Scruffy Doodles need pin brushes, which have long, round-ended stainless-steel or chrome-plated pins and a steel comb. Short and medium-coated Doodles will need bristle brushes and a comb. For the fleece and wool coated Doodles, you will need a slicker brush for removing mats and dead hair. Also, a steel pinned comb to make sure that there are no tangles left. There are also rubber curry combs to polish smooth coats and remove dead hair. When brushing, always check for burrs and other stubborn plant material, mats — which most frequently form behind the ears and under the legs — and any cuts or scrapes on the skin itself. Doodles shed, and some shed more than others. Regular brushing will help to keep the shedding under control. If you find tangles as you brush, you can stop and spritz on a bit more detangler to help work them out easily. Brush your dog with the slicker brush. Different groomers have different approaches for grooming dogs with thick coats like the Labradoodle. Continue brushing section by section in this way, stopping to work out tangles as you find them and then continuing on. The comb is the tool that will help you detect smaller tangles that you may have missed with the slicker brush. Even just for your puppy to meet and have a nail clip might be enough to start a good, calm rapport with the groomer. Follow up visits can begin to include a simple session of brushing, washing, drying, nail clip and ear hair pluck. Your puppy and groomer will be thankful for these small visits every weeks so puppy can get used to all of the sights, sounds and sensations till he is ready for a full clip. Grooming Your Adult Labradoodle You can maintain a long fleece coat with thorough brushing weekly. A curly fleece will need more attention than a wavy fleece. Curlier coats will be easier to maintain if it is kept shorter. Many owners have their labradoodles clipped two to four times a year depending on personal preference, lifestyle and curliness of the fleece. They get a full groom with a 1.
