After our dogs turn 1, they proceed to get OFA testing of their eyes and heart. A specialist either looks at their eyes or heart to verify they have no health conditions that could be passed to their offspring. If we are lucky enough that our young golden passes, we will move forward to the next health testing stage. The next health test that we typically conduct once our young golden is 1. While they are sedated to have these x-rays we usually also have Penn Hip testing done. Also, per our vet the Penn Hip is a better test to know the overall health of the hips as they test the elasticity and movement rather then judging based on an image. Last health test we do is done at the age of 2 years old. As the dogs age their bones calcify, a dog with failing elbow or hips younger then 2 could very well change to passing once they turn 2. Under each dog there is a link from K9 data. Unfortunately K9 data will not allow preliminary testing information in the link which is the OFA elbow and hip test results if the dog is under 2 years of age when the test is conducted. However we do list the preliminary test results under each dog. Once we have the official results K9 data will be updated to reflect their latest test results. I do not conduct my own x-rays and that would require a visit to the animal hospital. To reduce stress on mom and the puppies we do not do x-rays. I get a final count upon delivery keeping mom where she is most comfortable. Delivery of puppies take place in my home around the days after being bred, unless an emergency C-section requires otherwise. Typically, all our puppies are delivered naturally. Someone is always with the mother for the entire delivery. It is very strenuous but has the best outcome for both mom and pups. When all the puppies are born, we will post pictures on the Facebook page. We will then reach out to anyone on our waiting list. If by chance, there are any extra puppies we will make an announcement on Facebook after exhausting our wait list. Sometimes people back out and puppies do come up available at various times. During the initial few days into the few weeks mom and puppies are spending a lot of quality time together. We are keeping a close attention that everyone is gaining weight and seem to be progressing. The pups are handled daily by us. After about 2 weeks eyes and ears will begin to open. The fourth week they are starting to find their legs and moving around exploring. The fifth week if all are doing well, I begin the weaning process where mom is nursing less and less as I introduce kibble to their diet. I sell all my puppies with limited AKC registration. Under certain circumstances I will offer full AKC registration for an additional charge. If you are wondering what the difference is between limited and full registration. Limited registration means you can never breed a puppy from me and it will be expected upon proper age that the dog is spayed. Full registration is only for breeders that want to purchase a puppy with intentions of breeding. I am not against giving another breeder full registration however it must be discussed prior, and all requirements must be met that I have. I do require the final payment to be in cash upon pickup of the puppy, so there no issues of bounced checks or issues with sending monies from one bank institution to another. No exceptions. I typically only reserve the first 3 females and the first 3 males as there are no guarantees of how many puppies are born. I go in order of when I am contacted. For an example if you contacted me in May for a female, and John Doe contacted me in January for a female from the same mother then John Doe will get first pick and you would get second pick. It seems to be the fairest method I have come across and will be moving forward with that process unless I discover a better way. I also reserve the right to have first pick so I can sustain my future breeding line as it dictates. I do not allow visitation to the puppies until they are ready for pickup. It also increases the chances for the puppies to get sick and potentially all die from a condition call parvo, as they are not full vaccinated. I have scheduled meetings with individuals that would like to meet me and the adult dogs fully vaccinated prior to making a commitment but not when I have current litters. I would recommend if you want to see the puppies earlier to log into Facebook and follow my page on there. I conduct live videos where you can see all the puppies. After a few weeks old we begin to collar them so you can tell them apart better. I do not place or pick certain pups for certain homes. Some people may not like that due to a puppies drive or behavior. I personally feel training is key to your dogs behavior. You have to spend time with this puppy and be consistent. Goldens just want to please you, but they will test you to learn their place in the household. If you lack experience in training dogs, I do recommend you work with a trainer and read literature so you can achieve the most success with your puppy. You will get an hour to choose your puppy. Please be mindful as I will have others scheduled after your hour of time is completed. I will need some of that time to go over paperwork that is required through the state to complete. I have no problems if you want to bring a trainer or conduct your own tests to see if one puppy might be a better fit based on their opinion. Please be respectful of my property and do not go adventuring around wherever you may like without me being present. Once you pick your puppy and all paperwork has been completed, you will be provided with vet records of your puppy and the vaccines that were previously given. At this time, I do not microchip any puppies. I personally feel the best time to microchip a puppy is when they are sedated which I recommend during the spay. We do require that you schedule an appointment with your vet within 14 days of the pickup date. You may want to schedule this prior to arrival as animal hospitals have been extremely busy. We will have gift bag for you. There will be some surprises in there for your pup, including enough puppy food for the next several days so you can either remain on it or gradually change the food to one of your liking. We highly recommend slowly changing the food over time if you decide to change it as they have extremely sensitive stomachs at this age.

Luckily, this breed is one of the easiest to care for as their coat is so short, but you still need to put in a little effort. In fact, many owners of labs will only bathe their dogs a few times a year. The exception to this rule would be if your pooch gets really dirty and simply must be cleaned. Labrador owners quickly learn this breed enjoys rolling around in dirt, mud, and questionable messes. You will want to give them a bath following these escapades. Remember that bathing your pooch too often can dry their skin, laying a foundation for problems. This happens because Labradors have a special oil on their coat which works to prevent dry skin and protect them from dirt. Frequent washing will remove the oil leading to health problems. These dogs are notorious for shedding from their double coat that provides so much protection. As a bonus, brushing their fur more often will help spread their natural oils through their coat, lubricating their skin and providing them with a healthy looking shine. The exception to this is during the phase that occurs twice a year — during spring and autumn — when your lab is almost completely shedding their coat. The rest of the year, two or three times a week should be enough grooming for your Lab. The more you brush them, the less fur you will have to pick up from furniture and the more time you have to bond. During brushing, be sure to pay attention to signals they may give you and stop if they become uncomfortable. Do not dig deep in the canal and if there is a heavy buildup of dark matter you should consult a vet. This breed loves the water which due to their long hanging ears trapping water, can make them prone to ear troubles. In cases where the nails are left alone for too long, this can even lead to skeletal damage because of their odd gait while walking. If you have hard floors or they walk outside a lot, you can probably wait longer between trims than if your home is carpeted and your dog sticks to the grass when outside. Pay attention to signs such as a clicking sound as they walk on hard floors, or sharp ends that mean they need to be clipped. In other cases, a dog with poor dental hygiene may have severely damaged gum tissue, leading to losing tooth support and teeth eventually falling out. You may be able to get away with cleaning the teeth less often if they frequently chew on a bone or hard toy as this removes tartar and plaque as well. You can also invest in a few top dental chews for dogs , that help to remove plaque and tartar as they chew. Some can even helpw ith bad breath. In fact, if you try to use a normal brush, it quickly gets clogged with dead fur, making it very frustrating to use. You can find an undercoat rake that has spaced metal teeth and is very effective at removing dead fur, the most popular example of which is the furminator. Another option is a Zoomgroom from Kong, which is made of sturdy plastic and has prongs that are widely spaced. There are also special rakes that include a blade to make dead fur removal easier, but these are obviously controversial and need a great deal of care. You should also get one or two slicker brushes. As a bonus, this brush will separate water-resistant hairs and the massage given while using helps improve circulation in the skin. Dog ToothBrush and ToothPaste Shampoo As with all dog breeds, you never want to use human shampoo when bathing your lab. Doing so will dry their coat by removing natural oils, making your pooch uncomfortable in the long run. Instead, be sure to buy a good shampoo specifically for dogs. This also gives you the chance to find a shampoo that prevents fleas, ticks, dry skin, odor, shedding, or any other issue your pup experiences. Be sure to select a shampoo that is moisturizing, gentle, and alcohol-free. Do be cautioned that a Dremmel will take time to get your pet used to, and if mishandled can cause as much or more damage than standard nail trimmers. In terms of nail trimmers, there are two main styles: Scissor style trimmers are operated just like a standard pair of scissors, with you controlling the cutting motion completely. Many experts agree that the guillotine style trimmers are easier to use, while scissor-type ones are best for toenails that have gotten too long to the point where they curl inward already. You can also keep cornstarch or flour nearby as an alternative. In light-nailed dogs, the quick is pink and easy to see. After experience you will get a feel for where the quick is even in dark nailed dogs and be able to take off the right amount. However, if you are wanting to give your pooch some professional pampering you should visit your local groomer for some well deserved TLC. How often should a Labrador be groomed? However, when it comes closer to moulting season, you will need to up your grooming to around 4 times a week to make sure the dead hair is removed. Can you trim a Labrador's hair? Avoid trimming your dog as, although it may feel like you are helping, you could be disadvantaging your pup without realising. Is a Labrador long or short-haired? Labradors, generally speaking, are a short-haired breed but on the rare occasion, you may come across a long-haired Labrador which is a recessive gene. How can I stop my Labrador from shedding? However, you can follow some steps to minimise your Labrador shedding. Keeping on top of grooming and brushing will make sure that you are removing any excess or dead hair before it falls out naturally. As well as grooming, you will need to take close care with the nutrition your dog is getting from its food. What type of Lab sheds the least? It is impossible to quantify whether one dog will shed significantly more or less than another. You may hear people say that yellow Labradors shed much less than the chocolate and black variation of the breed. Especially when compared to their crosses, like the Labradoodle! But, their coats, teeth, paws and ears do still need regular attention. And, regular brushing and bathing can really help to control Labrador shedding. They should be brushed including checking paws, ears, and teeth a few times each week. But, in heavy shedding periods, you may want to up this to once or twice a day. Labrador Grooming Tools Knowing what grooming does a Labrador need is one thing, but being ready for that grooming is another thing completely! To look at some specific tools we recommend, take a look at some of the guides at the end of this article. We know what grooming an adult Labrador needs. But what grooming does a Labrador need during puppyhood? Puppies have a much softer coat than adult Labs. This way, your Lab will be used to brushing, nail trimming, and baths from a young age. So, make sure you have all the tools ready even from the time you bring your puppyhood. Labrador Bathing Most Labs stay smelling fresh with a monthly bath. But, you may need to bathe them more frequently if they roll in something smelly or spend lots of time getting mucky outside! Since the top layer of a Labrador coat is water-resistant, it can be a struggle to get shampoo all the way through. Make sure their coat is damp, then lather them up. Rinse thoroughly and repeat, working through their coat with your fingers. Use a dog-specific shampoo when bathing your Lab. Rinse your Lab thoroughly before drying them off. This will stop your dog from ingesting any shampoo when their lick their fur after the bath! Bathing can help you tackle shedding fur, but also to loosen any stubborn knots! Labrador Retrievers shed moderately all year round, and heavily twice a year in shedding periods. But, it can help you to control how much shed fur makes it onto your floors and furniture. Use your deshedding tool, and a slicker brush once or twice a day for best results. You may also want to bathe your Lab more frequently during these heavy shedding periods! Massaging shampoo through their coat can help to loosen some of those pesky shedding hairs. Some owners prefer to use clippers, but others prefer grinding tools. Either way, this is something to get your Lab used to from a young age. Or, you can book an appointment with your veterinarian or a dog groomer to show you in person. Labrador Ear Care Like all dog breeds, Labradors can suffer from ear infections. Gently lift their ears and examine inside. If it is excessively waxy, you may need to clean their ears, or take them to the vet for a check up. This is another process that you should ensure your Lab is comfortable with from puppyhood! Labrador Dental Health A final area to note when grooming your Lab is their teeth. Good dental health is important for all dogs, no matter what their breed. And, there are a couple of ways to go about maintaining it. You can choose a dog-specific toothbrush and toothpaste. Brush their teeth gently during brushing sessions. Or, finish off grooming sessions with a dental chew, perhaps one recommended by your vet. As you can see, Labs have quite large grooming requirements, despite their short coat. They adapt quickly to most hot and cold weather climates, making them an excellent all-weather dog selection. Megaesophagus Megaesophagus , which is a generalized enlargement of the esophagus, can be caused by a number of conditions that can affect dogs of all ages. Some dogs can be born with the condition because that is just how their esophagus is formed. As the name implies, one may associate IBD with lower GI symptoms, but in fact, sometimes vomiting is the main symptom. The concern about Pepto Bismol is that it contains salicylic acid, which is an ingredient in aspirin. We need to use this with caution, especially in dogs taking anti-inflammatories or steroids, as it could cause GI bleeding. Pepcid AC famotidine and Prilosec omeprazole are safer options to use to help reduce acid production and acid reflux, and these often settle their stomach. Medications to Stop Nausea and Vomiting Cerenia maropitant citrate is the most commonly used antiemetic medication that stops vomiting for dogs in recent years. It acts on a trigger zone in the brain to stop nausea, and also acts on receptors in the stomach. Vets will often start your dog with an injection of Cerenia and then follow up with pills every 24 hours for a couple of days to make sure the vomiting has been resolved. Reglan metoclopramide is less widely used but is still very helpful for motility disorders in dogs as well as megaesophagus. It might not actually be vomit but could instead be them clearing their airways. Pugs are brachycephalic and their airways can become blocked. It could actually be some saliva that they need to regurgitate. Your pug could throw up after eating. They will need some TLC. Vomiting and regurgitating are two different things, and I will explain the differences at the end of this article. But for simplicities sake, I am going to address both things as the same thing; throwing up. Causes of white foam vomit 1. Indigestion and stomach upset Your pug could be throwing up white foam just because they have an upset tummy. The most common reason is gastroenteritis where they have an empty stomach and then puke up a white foam vomit. This condition is also known as bilious vomiting syndrome. The bile produced can not only be white but also have a yellow color. Puking up something they ate Pugs love to put anything in their mouth they can get their teeth around, particularly during the teething phase. It might be that they ate something their stomach disagrees with such as grass. Kennel cough One of the more common reasons pugs throw up white foam will be kennel cough. Kennel cough can be contracted when your pug has been exposed to other dogs, usually in kennels as the name suggests. It is an upper respiratory infection that your vet can treat, typically being treated in a week to 10 days. Bloat Bloat gastric dilatation-volvulus is one of the most serious reasons for pugs puking up white foam and slime. They can become sick very quickly and will need to be seen by a vet quickly. It occurs when their stomach becomes twisted after expanding. The stomach can expand when filled with food, fluid, or gas which then puts pressure on their internal organs. Some vets recommend you wait a good 30 minutes after their meal, even with light walks. Pancreatitis Another serious health condition that results in your pug throwing up white foam is pancreatitis. This is an inflammation of the pancreas, which is an organ that aids digestion of food. Your vet will need to diagnose this condition, but other signs to look out for include your pug hunching his back up, being in obvious pain around their abdomen, having diarrhoea, not eating properly, being listless, and becoming dehydrated due to not drinking enough.
