We strongly encourage you to keep your puppy on the same food we provide for the first month. Both coccidia and giardia may live in the gut of a healthy poodle and they never have an outbreak. When their bodies are stressed they are more likely to develop an unhealthy balance and the result may be a sick puppy. Moving to a new home, leaving their Mother and siblings and diet changes are all stressful. We encourage you to make as few changes as possible to your puppies diet the first month. Changing to a different dog food — go slowly. It may take a month or longer to switch foods. If at any point your puppy develops an upset stomach go back to the level of food mix that they were doing well on. Dangers of not having the right size collar Not having the right size collar for your Frenchie can be dangerous for multiple reasons. First, your dog will be more likely to escape from you if they have a loose-fitting collar. Escaping is not a risk we take lightly as it puts them at danger. So, be sure to get the right size collar. So, using a collar can be a risk because they may damage their trachea or irritate their skin by pulling on a collar too much. Some people consider harnesses for puppies, but they tend to not respond well to them due to discomfort. So, a collar may be best for you puppy, just remember to be patient while they learn. Here in the USA, the Australian Labradoodle Association of America ALAA has been monitoring the development of this breed by maintaining a database of pedigrees and health testing of registered dogs for almost twenty years. While the Australian Labradoodle is not considered an AKC recognized breed, we do have a breed standard that conscientious breeders work towards. We have elected to keep our stud books open which means we allow for the development of new lines using registered Labradors, Poodles and Cocker Spaniels in an effort to expand our gene pool and keep inbreeding to a minimum. These new lines are then bred into existing lines that date back to the founding dogs from Australia. This of course is an option for breeders and there are many who are only working with descendants of the dogs from Australia while others have dogs that are a combination of old and new lines. It is our breed standard and our pedigree database that dictates the breed development and breeders choose pairings to improve temperament, coat and structure working within the guidelines set out by the ALAA. The ALAA has made extensive efforts to track and verify the pedigrees of our registered dogs, therefore, an ALAA verified pedigree is the only true identifier of an Australian Labradoodle. Find an Australian Labradoodle. But what difference does this make? What is the real difference? Do Australian Labradoodles look or behave differently to other Labradoodles? In short — yes they do. There are a multitude of differences in fact, and having bred both here at Lomond Hills in the past, we have a great deal of experience in this area. Early Generation Labradoodles Consistency Early Generation Labradoodles are, as the term implies, are of low generation. This means that there is very little consistency in the litters of puppies produced. If you cross a Labrador with a Poodle, the resulting puppies vary considerably in size, coat type and temperament. When you get to the second and third generations, things get even more complicated as the genetics play out and throw-backs start appearing. This means, for example, that a second or third generation Labradoodle could look like a poorly bred Labrador or a poorly bred Poodle rather than a Labradoodle. There is much, much more consistency in Australian Labradoodle litters. This is primarily because we are now so far down the generations, and as we breed further, physical characteristics and attributes become more predictable and consistent. Every puppy in an Australian Labradoodle litter will be recognisable as an Australian Labradoodle and throw-backs to parent breeds are very rare. The Coat Being only a few generations away from a Labrador, it is no surprise that the vast majority of Early Generation Labradoodles DO SHED their coats and are therefore NOT suitable for allergy sufferers, despite what you may have been led to believe from other sources! Australian Labradoodles on the other hand, are many more generations away from the shedding Labrador; their coats have been developed over the last 35 years such that they DO NOT SHED and therefore have a very high compatibility rate with allergy and asthma sufferers. Temperament Whilst there are some Early Generation Labradoodles with fantastic temperaments, they do tend toward the lively and potentially hyperactive side, particularly when compared to the calmer, better-balanced Australian Labradoodles. In fact, Australian Labradoodles are particularly intuitive, very intelligent, easily trained and are excellent with young children making them an ideal family member. However, they are still full of fun when playing outdoors and can be incredibly comical at times!
